A real scoop for chickens The strong connection between the Crest colleges in Clyde North has continued recently with the practical assistance of Hillcrest Christian College VCAL students.

The VCAL students were invited by Rivercrest Christian College to assist in the refurbishment and upgrade of its much loved chicken coop.

“The coop was in need of a crisp new look, a vibrant feel and a strong foundation. The senior Hillcrest VCAL cohort took up the challenge of refreshing the coop and making it a place for a group of chickens to call home,” said VCAL teacher Johnny Rabahi.

The 21 VCAL students worked diligently in two groups over many weeks to ensure a safe and speedy return for the homeless chickens.

“These two groups made a guarantee to the Head of Rivercrest Primary, Jonathan Shrapnel, that they would be the ones to get the job done in a timely fashion,” added Mr Rabahi.

The two groups consisted of a landscaping team and a construction team. The first worked with the aim of revivifying the encompassing area, whereas the latter focused solely on the chicken coop structure itself.

The landscaping team, led by VCAL coordinator Deborah Rebello, cleared, reordered, replanted, mulched the entire surrounding area, and beautified the garden.

The team even went as far as removing the old compost bin in order to make room for additional garden beds and a potential new and improved chicken coop for future use.

The construction crew, lead by property

manager, John Majoinen and Mr Rabahi, painstakingly ensured that the existing coop was clean, fox-proof, and functional for the big move in.

On Monday 24 May an official meet and greet was organised, with the VCAL and Year 3 Rivercrest students, to welcome and introduce eight excited chickens into their new home.

“Students and staff were extremely proud to have completed this project together and are looking forward to the future prospect of building a brand-new chicken coop from scratch; to give the chickens an even better home in the long term,” said Mr Rabahi.

“We hope to involve the Rivercrest students in this project and look forward to maintaining and enhancing the connections we have already made between the campuses.”

Term 4 is mainly focused on developing the school readiness for the children as this is the last term before they start school. New space for learning at Heritage College Little learners at Heritage College have a new space in which to learn following the opening of an upgraded and expanded early learning centre at the school.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas visited Heritage College on Monday 17 May to open the centre in an event hosted by principal Sonny Aiono, with staff, students and families in attendance. $500,000 in funding for this important project was provided by the Victorian Government under the Children’s Facilities Capital Program Major Grant - Early Learn-

ing Facility Upgrade grant, with Seventhday Adventist Schools (Victoria) Limited providing $289,752.

This upgrade was delivered by Kneeler Design Architects and Chippa Constructions and will increase the kindergarten’s capacity at the school with two classrooms, a reception area, office, amenities, and landscaping works.

The centre will allow local families to have more choices with long day care, outside school hours care, and vacation care services.

Lockdowns have also reminded us of the critical role schools play in lives of young people.

Cops swoop on weapons An OMNI Operation run by Victoria Police in Cranbourne has netted multiple weapons in the space of just a few hours.

OMNI Operations give police additional powers to detect weapon offences within a designated search area, enhancing public safety, eliminating anti-social behaviour and reducing crime in the process.

Over the course of the operation on Thursday 17 June, police checked more than 30

people and arrested 12 for weapon and drugrelated offences.

A total of six weapons were seized, five knives and one laser pointer, while a 27-yearold Cranbourne female, 38-year-old Cranbourne male, 49-year-old Cranbourne male and a 20-year-old Hampton Park male were arrested for drug possession.

In a statement, police said they “will simply not tolerate those who break the law or engage

in anti-social, violent behaviour that puts the safety of others at risk.”

“We will continue to have a high visibility presence and patrol community locations such as shopping centres and train stations to prevent crime and identify and arrest offenders as quickly as possible,” the statement added.

Police in the Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong Police Service Areas regularly run

a number of proactive operations, such as Operation OMNI and Operation Tidal, in an effort to deter and detect any offending in the community.

The powers for the Chief Commissioner to declare a planned search area are set out in s.10D of the Control of Weapons Act, however for operational reasons, Victoria Police does not always disclose the reasons for declaring a designated area.

Casey writes off thousands of dollars in debts

By Danielle Kutchel Casey Council has written off almost $60,000 in debt after deeming the dollars “unrecoverable”.

At its council meeting on Tuesday 15 June, the administrators carried a motion to write off $58,166.78 in unrecoverable ‘sundry’ debtors for 2020/21, in line with its Debt Management Policy (2020).

Administrator Cameron Boardman said the policy dealt with “non-rate debt”, such as debtors who provide services to the Casey Council for the community and who defaulted on their obligations.

“We are dealing in this policy with how we as an organisation manage debts outside of rate debts,” he said.

“They are very separate matters.”

According to the report, Casey’s total debt

balance at the start of 2020/21 was $34 million.

This was made up of $30.5 million in statutory receivables, or debts associated primarily with rates and infringements.

Non-statutory receivables totalled $3.6 million and are ‘sundry’ debtors relating to things like fees, charges and invoices issued by the council for a variety of purposes, including kinder fees, room hire and event ticket sales.

In September 2020, the council adopted an updated Debt Management Policy relating to sundry debtors.

Under this new policy, debts must meet one of seven rationales for being written off.

This year, 20 were written off because the debtor had left the address and could not be traced.

A further 143 were deemed too small for

legal action and not economically viable to pursue further.

In two cases, the debtor was deceased.

In seven cases, the debt collector recommended that the outstanding amount was not collectable.

Four cases of debt were subject to a decision of a legal judgement or court order, and another four met the rationale for “difficult circumstances as assessed by the relevant community service officers for debts that relate to community services provided by Council.”

Three of the debts were classed as administrative adjustments, including the largest write-off, totalling $8,465.19 and relating to services the City of Casey provided to a state government department in line with an executed funding agreement.

The program was cancelled over two years ago and according to the report, the state government and council agreed it should have been written off previously.

Mr Boardman said debtors would be treated “respectfully and with compassion”.

He said the amount to be written off this financial year was “certainly a reduction” from the more than $345,000 written off last year.

In seconding the motion, administrator Miguel Belmar said he was confident council’s debt management policies were being followed.

‘There are limited situations where the need for debts to be written off has arisen,” he said.

“The report today indicates these practises are reliable, and write offs are limited and justified.”

A virus is the reason I am Australian! My Australian dad and Canadian mum had settled in Canada but the polio virus was rampant, more so in Canada than Australia, so to keep me safe, they decided to return to Australia...and so here I am!

What are you most passionate about and how did you discover that passion?

I am passionate about human rights and social inclusion. I guess my 12 years of schooling with Sisters of St Joseph is the reason. We were inspired to think how we would contribute and leave the world better than we found it. I looked for ways to put their teaching into practice.

What is your favourite thing about the City of Casey?

I love the possibilities for City of Casey, a place of energetic multicultural families that could be the example for all of Australia.

What has been your most memorable moment?

Human relationships are most meaningful in life, so marrying my husband is my number one moment!

What do you enjoy most about your role in the community?

I really enjoy the company of other people, when we are sharing friendship and supporting each other...love it!

If you had to compete on MasterChef, what dish would you cook?

Maybe you would find me at the sink. I can wash up better than I can cook.

Our refugee policy needs to completely rewritten using the principles of justice, compassion and human rights.

Ridma’s run for cancer

By Danielle Kutchel Being diagnosed with cancer is always devastating news.

But for Ridma Nalawatte, the bad news was compounded by the fact that at the time of her diagnosis, she was 12 weeks pregnant.

“It was a bit shocking,” Ms Nalawatte said of the moment of her diagnosis.

“My first thought was, ‘why me?’ and I felt like my whole world was falling apart, especially because I was pregnant.”

The Clyde North mother said her immediate worry was for her unborn son.

“It was distracting. I didn’t think about the cancer much, I was thinking about the baby and what we were going to do.”

She was warned by the doctors that her baby might not survive, especially when he came down with a stomach problem in the womb.

She was offered the option of terminating the pregnancy.

But Ms Nalawatte said she had a feeling about her child.

“Because of him, I found out about the cancer. I had this feeling like he showed me I have cancer.

“So I thought, no; I’m going to keep the baby.”

Ms Nalawatte’s son, Dion, was born healthy at 29 weeks.

She underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and said her doctors and family, who flew in from overseas, helped to give her courage and keep her and her child safe.

She is now in remission after the cancer was confirmed to have disappeared following the chemotherapy.

Her journey inspired her to give back the moment she could, and for the past five years Ms Nalawatte has competed in Run Mel-

Over that time she has raised more than $3000 and hopes this money can go towards clinical trials to help stop cancer and prevent other mothers from facing the same experience.

She said her husband in particular has been supportive of her as she trains.

She alternates running and cycling, and also goes to the gym three to four times a week in an effort to be as fit as possible.

Ms Nalawatte said a positive attitude helped her to get through her cancer journey.

“It is a mind game as well,” she explained.

She encouraged other people with the disease to try and stay positive and think of their loved ones.

She said she felt lucky to have come out the other side cancer-free and urged people to donate to her Run Melbourne fundraiser.

I live In Cranbourne East and walk my dog twice a day. The amount of discarded litter and dog poo has always saddened me, but since the pandemic and use of masks I am really angry at the number of masks discarded on the footpaths and in the park. I pick up any I see, usually between three and six each day, and dispose of in a litter bin. I feel this would be the tip of the iceberg and there must be thousands finding their way into waterways and killing native birds and animals in horrendous ways.

Best chef is right here

By Danielle Kutchel It’s official: one of the best chefs of the year works right here in Cranbourne.

Damien Quinn, head chef at the iconic Kelly’s Hotel on the High Street was jointly awarded the Chef of the Year honour at the 2021 Australian Hotels Association (Victoria) State Awards for Excellence in May. Colin Rafferty of Cardinia Park Hotel in Beaconsfield was the joint winner.

Mr Quinn, who has worked at Kelly’s since 2004, said it was amazing to be amongst some of the industry’s “big hitters” like MPD Steakhouse in Berwick and The Espy in St Kilda.

“It means we’re doing something right,” he said.

The award also caps off a difficult year for the hospitality industry with Covid impacting venues across Melbourne.

Mr Quinn said it recognised the hard work that had gone into keeping the business afloat over the last 18 months, as well as the dedication and commitment of local hotels to their community.

Kelly’s has been in the same family for over 100 years, and Mr Quinn said the team’s passion for what they do has never waned.

“It’s our goal to continue what we’re doing and always try to be better,” he said.

As part of that, Kelly’s regularly takes on work experience students and apprentices to help train the next generation of chefs.

“I’m a big advocate for training and getting youth into the industry,” said Mr Quinn, who also speaks at local high schools to explain what the industry offers.

He did his apprenticeship at Kelly’s in 1997 and said it was “a great experience”.

He said his own passion for cooking was fed by watching people enjoy the experience of dining out and having a good time.

Mr Quinn said he and the team put together a number of takeaway food packages containing all the meals a family might need for a weekly dinner or special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries.

The community loved it and continued to support the hotel over the long months of lockdown.

Mr Quinn said marketing was also key to getting through, with the marketing team working overtime to get the food out there while keeping the tone light and fun.

Meanwhile, JobKeeper meant 95 per cent of

kitchen staff were able to be kept on.

Mr Quinn was sure to give everyone at least a two-hour shift a day to get them out of the house.

“You don’t realise how important a job is to people’s wellbeing and mental health,” he said.

Moving forward, Mr Quinn said the focus for Kelly’s now was on doing what they do best: offering locals a place to come and get a good feed while enjoying themselves.

Kids are back in the pool Local kids are jumping back into the pools now lockdown has lifted and are swimming their way through winter, with Jump Swim Schools experiencing its highest winter enrolment numbers on record.

At Jump locations including Berwick, Cranbourne West, Lynbrook, Pakenham and Pakenham Lakes kids are still jumping into the pool despite the plummeting temperatures to ensure they keep up their life-saving swim skills year-round and get back up to speed after two weeks of pool closures.

Swimming through the winter months is the most important thing you can do to prepare a child for the summer months of beach and pool visits and to ensure their skills remain

at a level where they could save their own life if the unthinkable accident was to occur, even during winter said Jump Swim Schools CEO Mark Collins.

“Water accidents don’t always happen in summer. According to the most recent Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report, drownings in February were actually the same as the number in July,” he said.

“The report also shows that 19 per cent of drowning deaths happen in winter.

“It only takes two to three weeks to start losing core swimming skills. If children take the winter months off, by the time they go on September school holidays, they’ve lost most

of their skills which puts them at serious risk.”

Mr Collins said children who continued swimming through winter could advance up to two levels by the time the warm season rolled around again.

“Summer swimmers are made in winter,” he said.

“Lockdowns have definitely interrupted lessons and swimming progress in Victoria, so it’s more important than ever to get back to the pool.”

Registrations for the kinder service will open in July.

3yo kinder places to open soon Registrations will open on 1 July 2021 for families wishing to send their child to a City of Casey funded three-year-old kindergarten program next year.

Families will be able to register their child by using the online kindergarten parent portal on the City of Casey website.

To be eligible to attend a three-yearold kindergarten service, your child must be three years old by 30 April of the year they start kindergarten.

While the council has delivered a funded four-year-old kindergarten program for many years, 2022 will be the first time Casey Council will also provide a funded three year old kindergarten program.

The council made the decision to expand its kindergarten service in February and will determine which kindergartens will provide a three-year-old program following the registration period. Centres will be selected based on demand for the service and the viability of the program at individual locations.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff said research has shown that attending a quality kindergarten program had long lasting benefits for children both socially and academically.

“Kindergarten is an important step for young children and gives them the opportunity to develop and learn valuable skills that help prepare them for school,” she said.

“Our qualified educators deliver an environment that encourages children’s natural curiosity, guides their learning and supports them in developing social relationships and communication.

“I encourage families who are considering kindergarten for their child to visit the council’s website, where you can find all the information you need to help you make the best choices for your child and family.”

Casey Council has reviewed its priority projects. 238145

Clyde rises as priority Casey Council says it has taken another step towards transparency with a review of the strategy for its growth areas.

At the council meeting on Tuesday 15 June, Casey’s administrators adopted the Casey Growth Areas Priority List and Implementation Strategy - June 2021.

The strategy saw a review undertaken of the priorities under each of the council’s 10 current contribution plans.

Projects have been categorised under these plans as either projects committed/underway; high priority delivery; or low priority delivery.

A number of high priority projects have been listed across the municipality, including widening and upgrades of Ballarto Road; installing traffic lights at the intersection of Linsell and Casey Fields Boulevards; construction of multiple new sporting pavilions around Cranbourne North; the urbanisation of Evans Road; and construction of Grices Road east.

But it seems all eyes at council are on the boom town of Clyde.

The major growth area has by far the largest number of committed and high priority projects.

High priority projects around the suburb include construction of multiple intersections and sporting pavilions, construction of connector roads and provision of compensation for land.

the motion at the meeting, said the priority lists were “fundamentally important” for the planning of new suburbs and demonstrated the priorities for the council’s use of developer contribution funds into the future.

“It’s important the community understands that council is careful in the way it uses contribution funds and is focused on those areas that perhaps are growing faster than initially anticipated,” Mr Belmar said.

Administrator Cameron Boardman seconded the motion and said the review reflected “lots of strategy, lots of analysis” of council funding and income over a 10-year period, to ensure the projects would be able to be funded.

He said the review would be of “significant benefit to the community”, offering transparency to the community and developers on how funds would be spent.

Vet cares for all

A strong belief in their team has seen Lynbrook Vet clinch one of three finalist spots in the Employment category of the 2021 Casey Business Awards.

Vet nurse Rebecca Nichols said although this year was the first time the clinic had entered the awards, she had faith in her team’s abilities and skills and had been confident in their entry.

“We back each other up,” she explained.

Likewise, the community has gotten behind the vet clinic; Ms Nicholas said they were “amazing, so close-knit”.

Lockdowns in 2020 forced some changes to the way Lynbrook Vet served its clients, but its unwavering commitment to the community never changed.

Nor did its commitment to its employees, who were supported throughout the lockdown.

Staffing hours were changed and extra ani-

mal attendants were brought on to help hold pets during surgery and consultations as customers weren’t allowed in.

Ms Nichols said calls to the vet skyrocketed over that time, with no stopping for the dedicated staff.

Most of the clinic’s staff live in the City of Casey, and keeping it local is incredibly important, she added.

Ms Nichols said the owners of the clinic look to hire local and support local at all times, even down to their marketing activities and purchasing of supplies.

Another innovation that helps the team is the presence of a clinical psychologist as part of the staff.

The vet industry is known for its high level of mental health distress and suicides, and Ms Nichols said the psychologist helps keep everyone feeling supported and valued.

“It’s really important and really different,” said Ms Nicholas, who in her 12 years in the

industry has never seen an internal mental health support like it.

But it all feeds into the clinic’s desire to do the right thing by its people.

“We want to be an employer of choice and a practice of choice,” she said.

“We have such a high care factor. We do good and we want others to do the same. We want to change the industry a little bit – by starting small in our area with things like this, we hope word can spread and other clinics take this on board.”

And that, she said, is when the clinic moves from being simply vets and clients, to being a family.

The winners of the Casey Business Awards will be announced at a gala event in July.

Doogood’s is doing well

Born and bred in the City of Casey, Doogood Australia is bringing Australian manufacturing back to the region.

The first-time entrant in the Casey Business Awards, which is a finalist in the Innovation category, has made it its mission to challenge convention and encourage others to manufacture and buy local.

Doogood is a family-owned and run business that specialises in designing, manufacturing, supplying and coating steel and fencing products.

Founder Nathan Jones started the business 15 years ago in Narre Warren.

They’ve now moved to Hallam and Doveton, and Mr Jones said the focus on local was as strong as ever.

He said the community’s support has “been a big part of why we’ve gotten to where we are now”.

According to Mr Jones, for the past decade the industry has relied heavily on imports from Chinese or Malaysian-owned traders - but Doogood’s founder was determined to bring such manufacturing and production back in-house.

One of its biggest innovations is a state-ofthe-art powder coating line that has allowed Doogood to manufacture its product here,

competing directly with imports in efficiency, speed and cost.

That investment has contributed to record sales and a 20 per cent growth in staff.

“We’re now able to produce things here that for the last 10 years haven’t been possible,” Mr Jones said.

The business has grown significantly since its founding. From a 300-square-metre factory in Narre Warren, its latest facility is over 12,000-square-metres.

They’ve grown from one employee, to about 47.

“We started as powder coating and amalgamated into arguably the largest fencing supplier in Australia,” Mr Jones said.

“We make our own wire and chain mesh for the fencing industry and make a fair majority of all of our panels, from pool fences to high-end security in prisons.

“Business has exceeded my expectations.”

He said entering the Business Awards had forced him to sit back and reflect on the growth the company has experienced.

“You realise you created something special that is beneficial to all the people who work here,” he said.

Kids revel in bush kinder Students at Rivercrest Christian College in Clyde North are literally as happy as pigs in mud!

Recently the Rivercrest four-year-old group paid a visit to the 25 acre environmental reserve that is literally walking distance from their classrooms.

Students put on their gumboots and packed an extra set of clothes for their visit to the reserve, which was full of wonder and surprise!

“To have access to such a wonderful resource is such a blessing for our students, “ said Donna Adams, an early years teacher at the school.

The school runs a fortnightly Bush Kinder program that allows students to explore the waterways, native trees and bird hides of the environmental reserve.

The visits are not only a great setting for the children to enjoy some fresh air but also are full of educational opportunities.

The children are supported as they challenge their gross motor skills, explore nature and develop play skills.

Students also explore the impacts of human activity on the world around them, and discuss ways they can care for the native flora and fauna.

“They experience first-hand the wonder and beauty of the natural world, while learning skills such as observation and experimentation,” said Mrs Adams.

And the best thing is, they get to jump in muddy puddles!

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

“They’ve disgraced themselves and they’ve disgraced the council. They’ve taken something away from me that I totally enjoyed. I loved serving the Casey community. I just want some clarity as to what way it’s going to go.”

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

“I want to get back into serving the community again. I want to run again and I want to get my name back on the honour board for the right reasons. At the moment it’s a dishonour board,” he said.

Star News understands Mr Flannery has put forward his request to be heard by the administrators at the next council meeting, slated for Tuesday 2 February.“It’s up to them now but a year later, this is still eating at me. I need closure and this is one way that I can get it,“ he said.

“I played no part in any downturn or sacking of the council and I feel it’s my duty to say that I don’t want to be a part of or in any way

Casey’s governance manager Rhys Matulis said: “Given the IBAC investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment on that matter. Council has received and will consider Mr Flannery’s request in due course.”

Downsize to a bigger life Speedsters slowed to a stop in Operation Regal

By Danielle Kutchel Drivers in Casey were in a hurry to get their celebrations started over the long weekend, with police recording a high number of speeding offences as part of Operation Regal.

The four-day, state-wide operation saw police targeting high-risk driving behaviour on Victorian roads, including speed, alcohol and drug impaired driving, fatigue, driver distraction and a failure to wear seatbelts.

Across the Casey Police Service Area, 42 speeding offences were detected over the long weekend.

Speeding was by far the most common offence detected over the four-day policing operation.

Coming in second place was unregistered vehicles, with 20 picked up over the weekend.

Police caught five drink drivers and eight drug drivers, as well as nine disqualified drivers and three unlicensed drivers.

Seven drivers in the Casey Police Service Area were caught disobeying seven signs or

signals, while there were two seatbelt offences picked up.

Five vehicles were impounded.

Cyclists apparently did the right thing over the weekend with no cycling offences detected.

It seems motorists may also be getting the message about using mobile phones while driving, with no offences of this kind detected over the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Statewide, Victoria Police detected 4780 traffic offences and 431 criminal offences as part of Operation Regal.

One in 21 drivers tested returned a positive roadside drug test while a further 170 drivers were detected with alcohol in their system.

Police also detected 1998 speeding motorists, issued 166 fines for using a mobile phone while driving, and intercepted 318 disqualified, suspended or unlicensed drivers on Victorian roads.

There was one life lost over the weekend following a fatal collision in Moorooduc on Friday 11 June, bringing the total lives lost on our roads to 98 this year.

Family violence has been steadily increasing in Casey since 2018.

The total criminal incidents in Casey to 31 March 2021 dropped 5.5 per cent compared to the same time in 2020.

But almost half of the criminal incidents in Casey remained unsolved as at the end of March.

By the end of the quarter, 30.2 per cent of criminal incidents had seen charges laid, 41.4 per cent were unsolved and 28.4 per cent had no charges laid.

The majority of crimes were committed in a house, although the total number of crimes committed at a house decreased slightly from 6074 in 2020 to 6065 this year.

Crimes committed on the street increased by more than 700 incidents.

CPA Australia has released a list of top tips for small business this tax time.

Running a small business is always a challenge and COVID-19 has created significant new challenges for many. Tax can often be an afterthought, but it is important, especially this year, to make time to look at your books, make sure you are up to date on your tax obligations and, most importantly, access any tax concessions that are available to help your business.

A visit to your tax agent can also give you the opportunity to step back, evaluate your business performance and prepare for the next financial year. Many small businesses are struggling right now and it is important to undertake cash flow analysis and develop a business recovery plan.

It’s amazing how some of the simplest things can bring amazing clarity to personal performance.

In particular, there are a whole raft of simple tools and models which illustrate key concepts and form simple, practical ways of improving business and personal performance.

Put simply, we can all operate according to one of two belief systems: 1. ‘Below the Line’: in which things typically happen to us over which we have little or no control; or 2. ‘Above the Line’: in which we create our own destiny and can actually influence how things turn out.

People operating from a ‘Below the Line’ perspective subscribe to a ‘victim’ mentality. They believe that stuff happens to them and that they are powerless to control their future. They literally become victims of circumstance, unable to materially affect outcomes.

You will often hear them say things like “see, this always happen to me” and “I told you I could not do it” and there is no shortage of excuses when things don’t get done or go wrong.

And unfortunately that’s what tends to happen, things don’t get done, but it is never their responsibility. These people see problems in opportunities and their conversation is characterized by BED (Blame, Excuses and Denial).

As a result, ‘Below the Line’ thinkers are pessimistic and typically more stressed since stress is a symptom of feeling a lack of control.

There is a better place to be, namely ‘Above the Line’. By comparison, ‘Above the Line’ thinkers recognise that although things may go wrong or not pan out as expected, there are always choices.

These people have a ‘victor’ mentality in that they know they can win and achieve. They see opportunities in problems and are typically more relaxed and optimistic knowing that they can influence outcomes.

There is an acronym for the ‘victors’ as well – OAR (Ownership, Accountability and Responsibility). This means that even when things don’t work out, they own the result, learn from it (‘Growth Mindset’) and do it better next time.

The good news is that while we may all drop into ‘Below the Line’ thinking from time to time, we don’t need to stay there – we can actually choose which of the two paradigms to operate from.

It is not always easy being ‘Above the Line’ (how many of us are ready to admit it when we stuff up?), but in the long term not only does this bring better results, it will create respect amongst others and is hence an invaluable tool for leadership.

By Gabriella Payne What started out as one woman’s little idea to lend a helping hand to those impacted by last week’s wild weather has quickly snowballed into an amazing community relief campaign, with organisations and community members coming together from across the Cardinia Shire to help those in need.

The ‘all hands on deck’ Victorian flood relief campaign came about last week thanks to a kind-hearted Longwarry mum, Shauna Evans, who reached out to the Pakenham SES asking what she could do to help those impacted by both the floods in Gippsland and the storm damage in the hills.

“I saw how quickly things were happening and how quickly people were being impacted and I figured if I can help someone out and make their day, I suppose give them something

positive out of a negative situation, then that’s better than doing nothing,” Ms Evans said.

“People are just trying to get back up on their feet [after Covid] and they’ve been knocked back down again, and yeah it just started with a small ambition and it’s just gotten bigger and bigger and evolved, which is just amazing.”

Shayne Honey from the Pakenham SES thought Ms Evans’ idea was a brilliant one, and they quickly went to work setting up a number of food collection stations across the shire, at both the Longwarry Football Club and the Officer Football Club.

The first collection was held in Longwarry on Wednesday 16 June and another was held at the Officer Football Club on Friday 18 June, with the final collections taking place on Tuesday 22 June at both clubs before all the supplies gathered will be sent off to help those in

“One big load is going up to the Dandenong Ranges and Emerald/ Cockatoo way and the other one is going down to the Gippsland area that’s been impacted by flooding, including Traralgon, Morwell and Sale,” Ms Evans explained.

Mr Honey said that it was “great to get everyone onboard” with Ms Evans’ idea and he thanked the community for all the donations that had been collected so far.

“It’s just great that it’s come about from Shauna asking a simple question and we’ve been able to pull it all together at this end using different community connections to actually get the boxes of stuff coming in,” Mr Honey said.

The powerhouse president

By Tyler Lewis Glenn Gambetta has enjoyed one of the most successful tenures as a football club president in his half a decade stint as president of the Berwick Football Club.

Volunteering and the Berwick Football Club is in his blood, his mother Maxine is a life member of the club for her work as a volunteer.

“When my son was at the junior club, I coached the under-9’s and 10’s,” Gambetta said of his first role as a volunteer.

“I was the vice president of football for five years, then I left the junior club and went up to the senior club.

“First year I was straight in as president, in 2015 they wanted me to take over the presidency, I said no because I still had one year left at the junior club.

“Someone stepped in for that year as president and I took over in 2016, it was tricky because you don’t know who’s who in the zoo, but we worked through it,” Gambetta said.

Over his time Gambetta has seen plenty of glory, with the club winning a plethora of games and stacking the silverware cabinet at Edwin Flack Reserve.

“I think the foundations had been laid before I got there, they were certainly heading in the right direction after a few rough years,” he said.

“For me personally, it certainly makes life easier when you’re winning games, I’ve been rapt that we have been able to sustain it.

“I think getting to a level where we could move into the Eastern Footy League has been the biggest accomplishment, over the premierships.”

Gambetta was at the top when the club made the bold move to the Eastern Football League, he touched on how that process came about.

“Clubs had to find a new competition, we had two choices, one was to go to Eastern, or the other was to join the Yarra Valley in the

Outer East – we looked at both – lots of meetings.

“We ended up going with Outer East, more or less because originally we wanted to stick with clubs we had been with, but then we realised that it wasn’t for us, so we ended up going to Eastern.

“It wasn’t an easy process, it was very time consuming,” Gambetta said.

All volunteers have something specific they love about their club, for Gambetta it is getting to put back into a great club with all his mates he played with in his career with the Wickers.

“I played all my football at Berwick, started at 10 and gave it away when I was 30,” he said.

“The fact that I am involved at the club with guys I played my football with is the most enjoyable.

“They’re on the committee or in fundraising roles or coaching roles, the other thing is now my son is at the senior club, they’re the two I am enjoying the most.”

Berwick has had some superstars walk through the doors, but Gambetta definitely has his favourites that he likes to keep a close eye for on a Saturday, while also revealing what he is most proud of.

“I love watching my son, he is in the reserves at the moment,” he said.

“I love watching the old boys get up, Tucky (Travis Tuck), Madi Andrews.

“They’re superstars but they just keep on keeping on.

“Leading a committee that has invested in the club and created - for the next generation - a facility with new lights, electronic scoreboard, goal netting, modernised social and change rooms and a new canteen.“ The Wickers suffered a loss on Saturday, but are certainly getting their wish in a much closer competition.

Charlotte by the double as wins stack up

By David Nagel A new treadmill might be just the beginning of renovations to the Pakenham stables of trainer Charlotte Littlefield after the popular local prepared two winners in three days last week.

Littlefield trained Merle The Pearl to victory in the $50,000 BM70 Three-Year-Old Fillies Handicap (1600m) at Sandown on Wednesday, before Prince Alby made it a great week for the stable with a narrow victory in Friday’s $35,000 BM64 Handicap (2418m) at Geelong.

Merle The Pearl made it back-to-back victories at Sandown, pleasing Littlefield after a four-week let up after a barnstorming fivelength victory on her home track at Pakenham on May 20.

Littlefield said the three-year-old filly had always shown promise and the timing of her winning streak was impeccable.

“We’ve always had a nice opinion of her and it’s just great that she’s built gradually through the grades,” Littlefield said.

“We own 50 per cent of her, which is fantastic, and I think I’m going to thank Luke (Currie) personally because we were getting a bit dire there.

“We just purchased a tread mill because things are really taking off with the move to Pakenham, so every little bit extra really helps at the moment.”

Littlefield said the daughter of Anacheeva/Lovely You’re Here would continue to improve when she comes back from the paddock as a four-year-old mare.

“Her owner did get quite excited after her last start and said he could see her attacking a decent race at some point in the future,” she said.

“I think if we put her in the paddock after today and bring her back as a four year old I think she’ll come back much better as an older mare, but she certainly did a really great job today.”

“She was a little bit keen due to a bit of time between runs and also up to the mile, so I was a little bit worried that she might be vulnerable late, but she wasn’t, she was good and strong to the line.

“She won really well last time, albeit on the synthetic. She handled the soft going today and showed a nice turn of foot, she’s only lightly raced so she’ll improve off that.

“I just said to Charlotte that I wouldn’t be in a hurry to step her out further now and she said she’ll take her away for a break now anyway. She’ll come back and furnish into a nice mare.”

Merle The Pearl is only lightly raced with Wednesday’s victory her second win from four career starts.

Prince Alby earned a thoroughly deserved victory with the seven-year-old gelding cap-

ping off a consistent preparation with a neckwin at Geelong on Friday.

Littlefield had Prince Alby in fine form last winter, scoring two wins and four placings from six starts, and the pair look set for another strong preparation this time around.

Prince Alby put the writing on the wall with a second placing at Sale, over 2232m, last start, and went one better after jockey Ben Melham timed his run to perfection.

“He’s a horse that has no tactical speed and he comes off the bridle but he really comes into his own on these wet tracks,” Melham said after the race.

“I was following the favourite and knew we had him covered shortly after straightening, he let down well and he’s a good strong stayer at this trip.

“Once I did get him through his gears he levelled out and he quickened up quite well.

“I think when he got to the front he had a

bit of a look around and sort of waited a little bit, but he’s in at the right time of year and he’s a good wet tracker, particularly at this trip.”

Prince Alby had a nine-start preparation last year, so expect him to continue to churn out the runs with this win coming at just his fourth run this campaign.

Gun Pakenham-trainer Phillip Stokes made it back-to-back victories for Pakenham trainers when his three-year-old gelding Bottom Line won over the 1412-metre journey at Geelong.

Bottom Line started a short $2.30 favourite and confirmed that quote with a strong win, his second from eight starts.

Jockey Ben Allen said the victory was even more meritorious than it appeared with Bottom Line not having the race run to suit.

“He’s a big horse and I really wanted to keep him one off and give him his own room but we didn’t have the luxury of that today so I had to go back to the fence and just bide our time and ride for luck,” Allen said.

“He’s a big horse and doesn’t like being crowded on the inside and coming down the hill it was quite cut up and was definitely the inferior ground. The second horse was able to come out and build into it where I just had to take the runs where I could.

“But once he got out to the better going he knuckled down and was tough.”

Stokes had a big say in proceedings at Flemington on Saturday as well with his three-year-old filly Unique Artist ($34) donkey-licking her rivals in the $135,000 Sir Henry Bolte Handicap (2000m).

Kiwi-jockey Michael Dee gave Unique Artist a dream run throughout and the pair bolted away down the famous Flemington straight to win by three lengths.

Unique Artist, who knocked many – including this punter – out of the first leg of the quaddie has now won back-to-back races after a five-length stroll at Pakenham Last start.

Pakenham’s next race meeting is set down for Monday, 28 June.

By Tyler Lewis “It’s going to be so different, but I think these are the Olympics that are going to be remembered throughout time, and to be able to experience that – it will be incredible.”

Sergei Evglevski is about to embark on an enormous journey, his biggest to date – from Berwick to the Tokyo Olympics.

And the Olympic Pistol shooter believes it’s going to be one remembered for a long time.

It’s been a different year for the nations Olympians, Evglevski touched on the extra year of preparation, a year he feels has assisted in developing his maturity.

“It’s (the additional year) has had its ups and downs in all honesty,” he said.

“I know an upside to it is I have really matured, comparing to this time last year I have felt a lot more stable.

“Obviously one of the downsides is it has been a bit of a waiting game and heaps of uncertainty.

“Just have to live every day one day at a time

and keep going forward.

“We had quite a bit of a break, it wasn’t long after selections that they announced covid and everything getting delayed.

“We lowered our intensity so we could build back up for the 2021 games,” Evglevski said.

Travelling internationally is uncommon in this current time, but it is going to be an uncommon games, where the competitors will have to undergo intense testing to maintain safety.

“I think it’s one of those situations where we have to be really cautious and really safe,” he said.

“I know we’re doing testing every day, we test 96 hours before we leave, 72 hours before we leave and then once we arrive, I think we either test as soon as we get off the pane or on the plane.

“We have to test negative every time and provide evidence that we’ve been vaccinated, it’s really serious but I think it’s the best thing for the athletes.

“It’s probably just the safest thing they could for the athletes.”

Evglevski is born and raised in Olympic shooting royalty, with mum Lalita Yauhleuskaya competing at six games, two for Belarus in 1996 and 2000, and four for Australia in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

His family have helped him in many ways along his journey, but have also prepared him for something other than competing.

“With everything in my family, with what my mum has told me, I think the dining hall is going to be one of the best things there,” he joked.

“When I went to the dining hall at the Commonwealth Games it was awesome, with these Olympics it won’t be as busy, which is fair enough.

“I think the experience with the Olympic games is all I can ask for.

“They’ve been ridiculously supportive, anything I need they’ve been there to help.

“I have always been tought to fight my own

battles, I know I have their support 24/7, but I try to do it myself because that’s what they’ve taught me.

“They’ve lived it, they always know what to say.”

Some athletes are pleased with making the Olympic squad, others aren’t satisfied with anything but a podium finish.

Evglevski, however, has his sights = set on competing at the best he can.

“I don’t have anything specific like that, but for me, with the amount of time I have put in is get there and try my hardest,” he said.

“If I get there and get bottom ten, but I tried my hardest, I’ll be happy, if I know I gave 110%, I’ll be happy.

“But if I go and say, ‘oh I have made it, I’m happy’ and half ass everything, that’s when I will be the most disappointed.

“Going in there and giving it my full effort is all I can do,” Evlgevski said.

The 2021 summer Tokyo Olympic games are set to commence July 23.

The Mega Swim is back As many as 100 locals will be getting in the pool at Casey RACE this July to support people living with multiple sclerosis at the iconic annual fundraising event, the Casey MS Mega Swim.

Since the first event in 2012, Casey locals have swum over 3,000km and raised $129,454.

Kicking off at 12pm Saturday 10 July, teams will swim relay style for a full 24 hours until wrap up at 12pm on Sunday 11 July.

People of all ages and abilities can participate in the Casey MS Mega Swim, which this year aims to raise $15,000 - vital funds that contribute to MS Go for Gold Scholarships, Financial Assistance Programs and services that directly benefit those living with MS. Kiwanis Club of Berwick return as this year’s event organizer, with support from MS. Kiwanian Norm McLennan will be swimming his laps again this year.

“I’ve been involved in the event for nine years now and each year the community steps up to show their support for people living with MS,” Norm said.

“In 2019, up to 90 swimmers swam over 467 kilometers, which is the equivalent of swimming from Cranbourne to Melbourne and back about nine times”.

Norm urges that anyone can participate in the event.

He says “You can join up as a solo swimmer and you’ll be allocated to a team. Or, why not get a team together. The teams are made up of swimmers of all abilities, friends and family. They love to have fun on pool

The true Keys to success

By David Nagel The Cranbourne father-daughter training partnership of Ken and Kasey Keys shocked the racing world on Saturday when their threeyear-old Free To Move scored an unlikely victory in the $140,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Given an aggressive ride by jockey Craig Newitt, the Unencumbered gelding sat on speed throughout and fought off several late challenges to win at the ultimate outsider odds of 100/1.

Kasey Keys wasn’t as surprised as the many punters who were tearing up their tickets after the second leg of the quadrella.

“I was pretty confident we could run a place, obviously we were scared of the favourite (Curran), but when there was some give in the track, I thought he was a really good chance,” Keys told Racing.com after the race.

Free To Move was having his second attempt at Listed level after running third to Ocean Beyond and Deep Speed in the McKenzie Stakes at Mooney Valley in November last year.

Free To Move has now won three of his 11 starts, with Saturday’s $84,000 first prize taking his career earnings to a tick over $274,000.

Cranbourne trainers made a real impact at headquarters on Saturday with Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young kickstarting the program in grand style when Celestial Fury made a successful debut in the $125,000 Two-Year-Old Handicap (1420m).

The Savabeel colt won a jump-out at Cranbourne on June 7 and backed that up with an impressive display that suggests he will get over more ground.

Celestial Fury was hard-ridden by jockey Craig Newitt as the field hit the 400-metre pole, but had too much in the tank for the race favourites, Secret Glamour ($3.50) and Somewatt Fabulous ($2.90) to win by a long-neck on the line.

In a forerunner of things to come, Celestial Fury and Newitt saluted at the despised outsider odds of $26.

Robbie Griffiths and Mathew de Kock then continued the momentum of the Cranbourne express when their four-year-old mare Don’ttelltheboss scored a last-to-first victory in the $125,000 BM90 Mares Handicap (1420m).

The Street Boss mare was a conspicuous last after bombing the start, but a patient ride by apprentice jockey Alana Kelly left plenty in the tank as the field turned for home and prepared for a dash down the famous Flemington straight.

Kelly weaved a passage from the 400 to the two, and then sprinted clear for a two-horse war with the Enver Jusufovic-trained Lindhout.

Don’ttelltheboss got the upper hand in the shadows of the post to score by almost a length, with the Nikki Burke-trained Galgani making it a Cranbourne trifecta back in third place.

Don’ttelltheboss has now won three of her 25 starts and accumulated $315,000 in prizemoney. She has run as high as Group-2 Level in the past so does have the potential to improve

And Cranbourne trainers were also winning over the jumps last week with Chris Hyland preparing Karakoram for victory in the $35,000 Maiden Hurdle (3200m) at Warrnambool.

Karakoram had punters cheering, saluting at the odds of $2,10 and impressing jockey Steven Pateman.

“He’s a neat little horse and he jumped every single hurdle spot on,” Pateman said.

“I was conservative at the last and he still jumped it great. He’s a great little horse and placed in the right races he’ll win more.”

In big news for Cranbourne, leading Victorian trainers Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace will call Cranbourne home in the coming months after announcing their decision on Friday last week.

The Group-1 winning partnership currently train at Caulfield, which will be closed shortly as a training facility.

Jason Thompson’s great little Aussie Secret is out Make no secret, Aussie Secret is an ‘eight carat’ sprinter.

Prepared by master Pearcedale trainer Jason Thompson, Aussie Secret was considered drawn ‘inside out’ in Friday night’s $75,000 to-the-winner Pink Diamond Short Course Sprinter final (425m) at Bendigo.

But strangely, for a greyhound preferred drawn out wide, he notched his fifth win from eight starts from box one.

In fact, Aussie Secret left his ‘diamond-cut’ rivals – including ‘next big thing’ and dual country cups winner Ferdinand Boy, twotime G1 finalist Shima Classic, dual track record holder Oriental Amber and short-course sensation Benchester – in his wake.

Eagles grinding win

By David Nagel Cranbourne has maintained third position on the AFL Outer East Premier Division ladder after a grinding 12-point victory over a game Pakenham at Livingston Reserve on Saturday.

Government restrictions meant that only a small crowd was hand to enjoy the dour contest, that saw the Lions heading for an upset with a two-point advantage at three-quarter time.

Cranbourne released the shackles slightly in the final term, kicking three goals to one to secure an important four points as the Eagles look to keep pace with ladder leaders Beaconsfield and Narre Warren.

Jake Carosella and Matt Alister kicked two each for the Eagles, while Jordy Bertrand and Dillan Bass were main contributors to the victory.

Tooradin-Dalmore remains in fourth place on the West Gippsland league ladder after the Seagulls succumbed to Phillip Island by 31 points in the match-of-the-day at Cowes.

The Seagulls matched the reigning premiers in the first half, but were outscored nine goals to three after the break to make it backto-back losses after a last start fail against Nar Nar Goon.

Blake Grewar kicked three goals, including two at the start of the last term that gave the Seagulls a winning chance. Veteran defender Adam Galea and Brad Lenders were amongst the best for the Gulls.

Kooweerup suffered a heart-breaking twopoint loss to Kilcunda-Bass, fighting back after a very poor start to almost nail the victory.

The Demons trailed by 17 points at quarter time but had cut the margin back to six as the game entered the final term. The Demons kicked two goals to one in the last quarter but just fell short of victory.

Nathan Voss was once again outstanding for the Demons, booting four goals, while Archie Whitta and Tom Deighton chimed in with two apiece.

Devon trailed by just 21 points at half time, but the Kangaroos kicked 13 goals to two after the break to run away with victory.

Pearcedale suffered a similar fate against Mornington, losing by 62 points at Alexandra Park.

Bulldogs’ win that was highlighted by a 12-goal third term.

Hampton Park is hanging on tightly to fifth place on the ladder in Southern Division Two despite a 37-point loss to Keysborough at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Redbacks led at quarter time and trailed by just 12 points at the final change of ends before being out-gunned in the final term.

The Burra kicked five goals to one in the last quarter to secure third place on the ladder.

Seagulls back on track after Sara takes centre stage

By David Nagel Cranbourne has continued its charge towards this year’s AFL Outer East Premier Division finals series after the Eagles scored a 46-30 victory over Pakenham in A Grade netball on Saturday.

The Eagles jumped out of the blocks on the weekend, showing no lethargy after a three-week spell on the sidelines due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

With Alanah Hardy (26 goals) dominant under the ring, the Eagles kicked out to a 13-5 lead at quarter time and were never headed from that point on. Tara Cecil, Kristie Bryden and Chelsea Morris were also impressive for the Eagles who now sit in fourth place on the ladder.

Reigning champion Tooradin-Dalmore was forced to work hard for its fifth win of the season in West Gippsland with the Seagulls surging clear in the second half for a 62-50 win over Phillip Island.

The Seagulls were forced to toss around the bibs at quarter time after the Bulldogs kicked out to an 18-10 lead at the first change.

Phillip Island played some great netball in the first term with Hayley Roberts, Jess Gysberts and Anthea Bennett having the better of the midcourt duels, while Steph Sivori and Luck Monahan were doing a great job in defence.

Christie Edwards was lively in goal attack, providing Kodee Heddle (GS) with some great passing that allowed the accurate shooter to knock down 14 goals for the quarter.

But, as great teams do, the Seagulls responded quickly and powerfully in the second term, with the introduction of Sara Duncan (C) changing the complexion of the 24 STAR NEWS

Tooradin Centre Sara Duncan was at her entertaining best in the win over Phillip Island. 241242 midcourt, while Bec Kinna (GK) and Jess Maher (GD) tightened things up in defence after taking over the responsibility from Ebony Mason and Ebony Dolan.

The Seagulls scored 18 goals to seven in the second term to lead 28-25 at half time, and then extended that margin to 10 and eventually 12 over the next two quarters.

Alex Maher was unstoppable for the Seagulls in their second-quarter comeback, scoring 15 of her team’s 18 goals. Kooweerup had the Kilcunda-Bass enforced bye, while Lang Lang suffered the same fate in the Ellinbank league.
