Connected for success Last year I wrote a piece titled, Challenging Times in Schools, in which I reflected on the range of difficult and at times traumatic experiences that the pandemic brought to schools.

It was a very hard year for all - students, parents and staff. I concluded the piece with the following thought.

‘Moving forward to having all children returning to school fulltime, raises other challenges for us all, as it does opportunities.

Drawing on the strength of connection between and across our whole school community will be the basis of our successes in meeting those challenges.’

Now, with children firmly ensconced back in schools, I am proud to say that it has been because of the strength of connection between and across our entire school community that Berwick Lodge Primary School is a great place of learning. In saying this, there is no single thing that makes this so. Sure, we have an incredibly wide range of programs available for our students, as all schools should have. We have a stable staff with a great mix of youth and experience. Our student cohort is highly motivated and our parents back us in with their support.

Now in our thirty second year of operation we continue to attract a significant number of students from beyond our neighbourhood boundaries and our graduate students, some now in their 40s, are making their mark as community leaders in their own right.

As the founding principal of this fine local school, it remains an ongoing privilege for me to be here. Flourishing at St Francis At St Francis Xavier College education seeks to invite all students to rise to the challenge of becoming young men and women of conscience, competence and compassion.

Recently St Francis Xavier College students and educators were recognised for their dedication, with the Catholic Diocese of Sale Catholic Education awards.

Student Gabriella Stipkovic received the Father James Wall Bursary – Leadership Achievement Award.

This bursary recognises the achievements of Catholic secondary school students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and service to others.

The recipients each receive $4,000 from the Catholic Development Fund to assist with school fees and other expenses incurred while undertaking studies in Years 11 and 12.

St Francis Xavier College Vice Principal Timothy Newcomb received the Spirit of Catholic Education Award for Inspiring Learning, awarded for his significant contribution to student learning.

While Lindsay Sant, Religious Education Leader, received the Spirit of Catholic Education Award for Inspiring Faith, awarded for his significant contribution to the development of students’ faith lives.

Who knows what else St Francis Xavier students will achieve in their lives? One thing is certain; they will achieve more if they can feel the nurturing influence of family and school working in harmony.

wonder. The curriculum provides opportunities for children to actively explore both indoor and outdoor classrooms. New space for learning

A real scoop for chickens The strong connection between the Crest colleges in Clyde North has continued recently with the practical assistance of Hillcrest Christian College VCAL students.

The VCAL students were invited by Rivercrest Christian College to assist in the refurbishment and upgrade of its much loved chicken coop.

“The coop was in need of a crisp new look, a vibrant feel and a strong foundation. The senior Hillcrest VCAL cohort took up the challenge of refreshing the coop and making it a place for a group of chickens to call home,” said VCAL teacher Johnny Rabahi.

The 21 VCAL students worked diligently in two groups over many weeks to ensure a safe and speedy return for the homeless chickens.

“These two groups made a guarantee to the Head of Rivercrest Primary, Jonathan Shrapnel, that they would be the ones to get the job done in a timely fashion,” added Mr Rabahi.

The two groups consisted of a landscaping team and a construction team. The first worked with the aim of revivifying the encompassing area, whereas the latter focused solely on the chicken coop structure itself.

The landscaping team, led by VCAL coordinator Deborah Rebello, cleared, reordered, replanted, mulched the entire surrounding area, and beautified the garden.

The team even went as far as removing the old compost bin in order to make room for additional garden beds and a potential new and improved chicken coop for future use.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas visited Heritage College on Monday 17 May to open the centre in an event hosted by principal Sonny Aiono, with staff, students and families in attendance. $500,000 in funding for this important project was provided by the Victorian Government under the Children’s Facilities Capital Program Major Grant - Early Learning Facility Upgrade grant, with Seventhday Adventist Schools (Victoria) Limited providing $289,752.

This upgrade was delivered by Kneeler Design Architects and Chippa Constructions and will increase the kindergarten’s capacity at the school with two classrooms, a reception area, office, amenities, and landscaping works.

The centre will allow local families to have more choices with long day care, outside school hours care, and vacation care services.

In an Australian-first, the State Government has provided almost $5 billion to deliver a full 15 hours of three-year-old kinder to every Victorian child over the next decade, with the roll-out beginning in 2020.

As part of this roll-out, the State Government is upgrading infrastructure through a $1.68 billion co-investment with the early childhood sector to build and expand kindergarten facilities across the state.

This investment includes the delivery of a number of new kindergartens on existing school sites – as at Heritage College – to support the roll-out of the program, provid-

Speaking on the day, Mr Maas said the opening of the upgraded early learning centre would make things more convenient for busy parents dropping off multiple children at school and kinder.

He said the upgraded space was a testament to the school’s vision.

“I am rapt, completely rapt, that the State Government has invested to allow this school’s vision to be completed.

“I congratulate the school on its vision, on making this all happen,” he said.

“The upgraded Early Learning Centre at Heritage College is just another step towards ensuring that our youngest students get a head start by receiving a high-quality education in modern and functional spaces.”

On Monday 24 May an official meet and greet was organised, with the VCAL and Year 3 Rivercrest students, to welcome and introduce eight excited chickens into their new home.

“Students and staff were extremely proud to have completed this project together and are looking forward to the future prospect of building a brand-new chicken coop from scratch; to give the chickens an even better home in the long term,” said Mr Rabahi.

“We hope to involve the Rivercrest students in this project and look forward to maintaining and enhancing the connections we have already made between the campuses.”

Wheelchair users parking in the existing onstreet parking would also struggle, they said, as there would be no pathway on the school side to get to the new entrance.

The western entrance has to be reached by crossing a ditch, which can get muddy during the winter months.

The parent members would prefer a crossover pathway to be built to better access this entrance.

Instead, the council has proposed closing

the existing western entrance during the wet months – an option parent members slammed as “unrealistic”.

A survey of parents undertaken by the school council showed the majority were not in favour of the council’s plans.

A Berwick school is at loggerheads with Casey Council over plans for a proposed footpath.

The Bernly Gardens Recreation Reserve project is underway next door to Berwick Chase Primary School, with construction of a community pavilion, cricket training nets and sports field lighting set to be completed soon.

As part of the project, the City of Casey plans to build a new footpath, which would run between the reserve and Berwick Chase Primary School to link Viewgrand Drive and Bernly Boulevard.

But the school council vigorously opposes these plans, saying they would disadvantage students and parents.

The school has an existing ‘western entrance’ on Bernly Boulevard, directly opposite on-street parking that is used by an estimated 3000 people per week.

Casey Council has proposed constructing a pedestrian crossing near the entrance to the new oval on Bernly Boulevard – but parent members would prefer the crossing to be placed closer to existing on-street parking and the western entrance.

According to parent members of the school council, Casey Council has proposed the school shut its existing entrance and create a new point of entry where the new footpath would go.

“This is the furthest point away from the school buildings, and does not link up with existing school pathway infrastructure, meaning they are forcing us to spend money on pathways,” the parent members said in a statement.

That money would have to come out of the school’s facilities budget, they claimed.

Parent members said the council’s proposed footpath would drastically increase the distance students and parents needed to travel to reach the school, and would be open to the elements in inclement weather.

They said the path would offer little to no visibility to parents parked on Bernly Boule-

IN BRIEF Death after street assault It’s understood a person has died after an assault in Narre Warren.

The incident occurred on Vesper Drive in Narre Warren on the afternoon of Wednesday 23 June.

An unconfirmed report from a person on scene stated the victim died on the way to hospital.

The witness described seeing “police everywhere” at around 2.30pm.

The area was under police control with Victoria Police yet to make official comments.

Casey’s crime drops, but FV rises

By Danielle Kutchel Overall crime is down in Casey, according to the latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency.

Once again, however, Casey has recorded a horrifying increase in family violence incidents.

The total number of incidents was up more than 12 per cent from last year’s numbers.

It’s also higher than the state family incident rate; for the year ending March 2021, the family incident rate per 100,000 of population in Casey was 1480.4, compared to the Victorian rate of 1389.1.

Females remained the most commonly affected family members, and people aged between 25 and 34 are most affected, according to the data.

Casey’s devastating numbers were again by far the highest in the southern metro policing region, and also outstrip our nearest neighbours.

While Casey recorded 5483 family incidents to the year ending March 2021, Greater Dandenong recorded 2834, and Cardinia Shire recorded 1535.

Family violence has been steadily increasing in Casey since 2018.

The total criminal incidents in Casey to 31 March 2021 dropped 5.5 per cent compared to the same time in 2020.

But almost half of the criminal incidents in Casey remained unsolved as at the end of March.

By the end of the quarter, 30.2 per cent of criminal incidents had seen charges laid, 41.4 per cent were unsolved and 28.4 per cent had no charges laid.

Pedestrian dies in Narre Warren Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating after a woman was fatally struck by a car in Narre Warren on Monday 21 June.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Princess Highway and Raven Crescent shortly after 8.30am.

It is believed the woman was crossing the road when she was struck by a gold Toyota Kluger travelling east on Raven Crescent.

The driver of the vehicle, a 50-year-old Cranbourne East woman, stopped and is assisting police with the investigation.

The crime rate has dropped in Casey. a house, although the total number of crimes committed at a house decreased slightly from 6074 in 2020 to 6065 this year.

By Danielle Kutchel Drivers in Casey were in a hurry to get their celebrations started over the long weekend, with police recording a high number of speeding offences as part of Operation Regal.

The four-day, state-wide operation saw police targeting high-risk driving behaviour on Victorian roads, including speed, alcohol and drug impaired driving, fatigue, driver distraction and a failure to wear seatbelts.

Across the Casey Police Service Area, 42 speeding offences were detected over the long weekend. Speeding was by far the most common offence detected over the four-day policing operation.

Coming in second place was unregistered vehicles, with 20 picked up over the weekend.

Police caught five drink drivers and eight drug drivers, as well as nine disqualified drivers and three unlicensed drivers.

Seven drivers in the Casey Police Service Area were caught disobeying seven signs or signals, while there were two seatbelt offences picked up. Five vehicles were impounded.

Cyclists apparently did the right thing over the weekend with no cycling offences detected.

It seems motorists may also be getting the message about using mobile phones while driving, with no offences of this kind detected over the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Statewide, Victoria Police detected 4780 traffic offences and 431 criminal offences as part of Operation Regal.

One in 21 drivers tested returned a positive roadside drug test while a further 170 drivers were detected with alcohol in their system.

Police also detected 1998 speeding motorists, issued 166 fines for using a mobile phone while driving, and intercepted 318 disqualified, suspended or unlicensed drivers on Victorian roads.

There was one life lost over the weekend following a fatal collision in Moorooduc on Friday 11 June, bringing the total lives lost on our roads to 98 this year.

A virus is the reason I am Australian! My Australian dad and Canadian mum had settled in Canada but the polio virus was rampant, more so in Canada than Australia, so to keep me safe, they decided to return to Australia...and so here I am!

What are you most passionate about and how did you discover that passion?

I am passionate about human rights and social inclusion. I guess my 12 years of schooling with Sisters of St Joseph is the reason. We were inspired to think how we would contribute and leave the world better than we found it. I looked for ways to put their teaching into practice.

What is your favourite thing about the City of Casey?

I love the possibilities for City of Casey, a place of energetic multicultural families that could be the example for all of Australia.

What has been your most memorable moment?

Human relationships are most meaningful in life, so marrying my husband is my number one moment!

What do you enjoy most about your role in the community?

I really enjoy the company of other people, when we are sharing friendship and supporting each other...love it!

If you had to compete on MasterChef, what dish would you cook?

Maybe you would find me at the sink. I can wash up better than I can cook.

If you were Prime Minister for a day, what would be the number one thing you would do?

Our refugee policy needs to completely rewritten using the principles of justice, compassion and human rights.

Council debts dismissed

By Danielle Kutchel Casey Council has written off almost $60,000 in debt after deeming the dollars “unrecoverable”.

At its council meeting on Tuesday 15 June, the administrators carried a motion to write off $58,166.78 in unrecoverable ‘sundry’ debtors for 2020/21, in line with its Debt Management Policy (2020).

Administrator Cameron Boardman said the policy dealt with “non-rate debt”, such as debtors who provide services to the Casey Council for the community and who defaulted on their obligations.

“We are dealing in this policy with how we as an organisation manage debts outside of rate debts,” he said.

“They are very separate matters.”

According to the report, Casey’s total debt balance at the start of 2020/21 was $34 million.

This was made up of $30.5 million in statutory receivables, or debts associated primarily with rates and infringements.

Non-statutory receivables totalled $3.6 million and are ‘sundry’ debtors relating to things like fees, charges and invoices issued by the council for a variety of purposes, including kinder fees, room hire and event ticket sales.

In September 2020, the council adopted an updated Debt Management Policy relating to sundry debtors.

Under this new policy, debts must meet one of seven rationales for being written off.

This year, 20 were written off because the debtor had left the address and could not be traced.

A further 143 were deemed too small for legal action and not economically viable to pursue further.

Casey Council has written off tens of thousands of dollars in debt. 241632 In two cases, the debtor was deceased.

In seven cases, the debt collector recommended that the outstanding amount was not collectable.

Four cases of debt were subject to a decision of a legal judgement or court order, and another four met the rationale for “difficult circumstances as assessed by the relevant community service officers for debts that relate to community services provided by Council.”

Three of the debts were classed as administrative adjustments, including the largest

write-off, totalling $8,465.19 and relating to services the City of Casey provided to a state government department in line with an executed funding agreement.

The program was cancelled over two years ago and according to the report, the state government and council agreed it should have been written off previously.

Mr Boardman said debtors would be treated “respectfully and with compassion”.

He said the amount to be written off this fi-

nancial year was “certainly a reduction” from the more than $345,000 written off last year.

In seconding the motion, administrator Miguel Belmar said he was confident council’s debt management policies were being followed.

‘There are limited situations where the need for debts to be written off has arisen,” he said.

“The report today indicates these practises are reliable, and write offs are limited and justified.”

Clyde emerges as priority as council reviews projects

By Danielle Kutchel Casey Council says it has taken another step towards transparency with a review of the strategy for its growth areas.

At the council meeting on Tuesday 15 June, Casey’s administrators adopted the Casey Growth Areas Priority List and Implementation Strategy - June 2021.

The strategy saw a review undertaken of the priorities under each of the council’s 10 current contribution plans.

Projects have been categorised under these plans as either projects committed/underway; high priority delivery; or low priority delivery.

A number of high priority projects have been listed across the municipality, including widening and upgrades of Ballarto Road; installing traffic lights at the intersection of Linsell and Casey Fields Boulevards; construction of multiple new sporting pavilions around Cranbourne North; the urbanisation of Evans Road; and construction of Grices Road east.

But it seems all eyes at council are on the boom town of Clyde.

The major growth area has by far the largest number of committed and high priority projects.

High priority projects around the suburb include construction of multiple intersections and sporting pavilions, construction of connector roads and provision of compensation for land.

Administrator Miguel Belmar, who moved the motion at the meeting, said the priority lists were “fundamentally important” for the planning of new suburbs and demonstrated the priorities for the council’s use of developer contribution funds into the future.

“It’s important the community understands that council is careful in the way it uses contribution funds and is focused on those areas that perhaps are growing faster than initially anticipated,” Mr Belmar said.

Administrator Cameron Boardman seconded the motion and said the review re-

flected “lots of strategy, lots of analysis” of council funding and income over a 10-year period, to ensure the projects would be able to be funded.

He said the review would be of “significant benefit to the community”, offering transparency to the community and developers on how funds would be spent.

OPINION Pick up your masks!

I live In Cranbourne East and walk my dog twice a day.

The amount of discarded litter and dog poo has always saddened me, but since the pandemic and use of masks I am really angry at the number of masks discarded on the footpaths and in the park.

I pick up any I see, usually between three and six each day, and dispose of in a litter bin.

I feel this would be the tip of the iceberg and there must be thousands finding their way into waterways and killing native birds and animals in horrendous ways.

Acting Premier James Merlino has announced a major easing of Covid restrictions for Victorians as the state recorded another donut day of no new local cases.

On the advice of the Chief Health Officer, restrictions in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne will ease from 11.59pm Thursday 24 June.

Private visitors to the home will increase from two in Melbourne, and five in regional Victoria to 15 across the entire state – and up to 50 people can gather outside in a public place like a park.

Funerals and weddings will be capped at 300 people, and hospitality venues can serve up to 300 in Melbourne, but density limits still apply.

Masks must still be worn inside except at home, and are recommended when you’re unable to keep a 1.5 metre distance.

The work from home recommendation has been removed, however, metropolitan Melbourne offices can now work to a cap of 75 per cent capacity or 30 people in a workplace, whichever is greater.

Players, parents and spectators can attend outdoor community sport within the total cap of 1000 people.

Theatres will initially open at 50 per cent capacity, with up to 1000 people.

From this weekend crowds can attend public events and outdoor stadiums with a limit of 50 per cent, or up to 25,000 people.

Dancefloors remain closed, including at weddings.

Subject to epidemiology and the advice of the Chief Health Officer, from 11.59pm on Thursday 1 July, venues will be able to host bigger numbers.

This would mean 100 per cent capacity at theatres and 85 per cent capacity at indoor and outdoor stadiums.

Concern over fox baits

By Danielle Kutchel Dog owners have been put on notice with poisonous baits laid near a popular walking trail.

A number of 1080 baits have been laid at Cardinia Creek Parklands on Inglis Road in Beaconsfield.

The baits are targeting foxes which are killing native wildlife.

Warning signs at the site explain there are baits in the area.

More recently, a warning was spray-painted on the path leading into the park – apparently by a concerned walker – calling the poison “dog bait” that “will kill”.

Parks Victoria area chief ranger Darren Mitchell said the potential impact of the baits on wildlife other than foxes was “extremely

They said they left Cardinia Creek Parklands and went to a different park where they felt safer.

The person said they wished there was a safer way to poison foxes in the area, and questioned whether there was a more efficient way to let visitors know about the poison such as more prominent signage or using animal registration data to contact nearby dog owners.

“I don’t think they should put it in parks. It is too much of a risk and the signage really isn’t adequate.

“Something as serious as this needs to be prominent,” they said.

Another walker at the park said they simply kept their dogs close by and ensured they did not eat anything while at the park to minimise the risk of poisoning.

Mr Mitchell recommended concerned walkers take a number of precautions while in the parklands.

“It is important to keep your dog on a leash at all times,” he said.

“The best way to prevent dogs from picking up baits is by ensuring they are kept safely away from any source of the poison and staying on existing tracks. A muzzle is also recommended.”

The baits are set to be collected by 30 June.

low”, but added precautions had been taken to protect them such as burying the baits and spacing them at least 500 metres apart.

People living nearby were also warned about the upcoming baiting, which began on Tuesday 6 April.

Nevertheless, a photo of the spray-painted warning, posted on Facebook, attracted a number of concerned comments from walkers and residents worried that dogs and birds might inadvertently ingest the poison.

The 1080 pesticide is extremely toxic and the RSPCA notes there was no antidote.

One local walker, who wished to remain anonymous, said they did not notice the signs in the area before entering the park and only became aware of the baits when they saw the spray-painted message.

CASEY BUSINESS AWARDS Over the next few weeks, Star News is profiling the finalists in the 2021 Casey Business Awards. Another innovation that helps the team is the presence of a clinical psychologist as part of the staff.

The vet industry is known for its high level of mental health distress and suicides, and Ms Nichols said the psychologist helps keep everyone feeling supported and valued.

“It’s really important and really different,” said Ms Nicholas, who in her 12 years in the industry has never seen an internal mental health support like it.

But it all feeds into the clinic’s desire to do the right thing by its people.

“We want to be an employer of choice and a practice of choice,” she said.

“We have such a high care factor. We do good and we want others to do the same. We want to change the industry a little bit – by starting small in our area with things like this, we hope word can spread and other clinics take this on board.”

And that, she said, is when the clinic moves from being simply vets and clients, to being a family.

The winners of the Casey Business Awards will be announced at a gala event in July.

Rex name shame

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

“I want to get back into serving the community again. I want to run again and I want to get my name back on the honour board for the right reasons. At the moment it’s a dishonour board,” he said.

Star News understands Mr Flannery has put forward his request to be heard by the administrators at the next council meeting, slated for Tuesday 2 February.“It’s up to them now but a year later, this is still eating at me. I need closure and this is one way that I can get it,“ he said.

“I played no part in any downturn or sacking of the council and I feel it’s my duty to say that I don’t want to be a part of or in any way

Casey’s governance manager Rhys Matulis said: “Given the IBAC investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment on that matter. Council has received and will consider Mr Flannery’s request in due course.”

A strong belief in their team has seen Lynbrook Vet clinch one of three finalist spots in the Employment category of the 2021 Casey Business Awards.

Vet nurse Rebecca Nichols said although this year was the first time the clinic had entered the awards, she had faith in her team’s abilities and skills and had been confident in their entry.

“We back each other up,” she explained.

Likewise, the community has gotten behind the vet clinic; Ms Nicholas said they were “amazing, so close-knit”.

Lockdowns in 2020 forced some changes to the way Lynbrook Vet served its clients, but its unwavering commitment to the community never changed.

Nor did its commitment to its employees, who were supported throughout the lockdown.

Staffing hours were changed and extra animal attendants were brought on to help hold pets during surgery and consultations as customers weren’t allowed in.

Ms Nichols said calls to the vet skyrocketed over that time, with no stopping for the dedicated staff.

Most of the clinic’s staff live in the City of Casey, and keeping it local is incredibly important, she added.

Ms Nichols said the owners of the clinic look to hire local and support local at all times,

Doogood’s doing well

By Danielle Kutchel Born and bred in the City of Casey, Doogood Australia is bringing Australian manufacturing back to the region.

The first-time entrant in the Casey Business Awards, which is a finalist in the Innovation category, has made it its mission to challenge convention and encourage others to manufacture and buy local.

Doogood is a family-owned and run business that specialises in designing, manufacturing, supplying and coating steel and fencing products.

Founder Nathan Jones started the business 15 years ago in Narre Warren.

They’ve now moved to Hallam and Doveton, and Mr Jones said the focus on local was as strong as ever.

He said the community’s support has “been a big part of why we’ve gotten to where we are now”.

According to Mr Jones, for the past decade the industry has relied heavily on imports from Chinese or Malaysian-owned traders but Doogood’s founder was determined to bring such manufacturing and production back in-house.

One of its biggest innovations is a state-ofthe-art powder coating line that has allowed Doogood to manufacture its product here, competing directly with imports in efficiency, speed and cost.

That investment has contributed to record

sales and a 20 per cent growth in staff.

“We’re now able to produce things here that for the last 10 years haven’t been possible,” Mr Jones said.

The business has grown significantly since its founding. From a 300-square-metre factory in Narre Warren, its latest facility is over 12,000-square-metres.

They’ve grown from one employee, to about 47.

“We started as powder coating and amalgamated into arguably the largest fencing supplier in Australia,” Mr Jones said.

“We make our own wire and chain mesh for the fencing industry and make a fair majority of all of our panels, from pool fences to highend security in prisons.

“Business has exceeded my expectations.”

He said entering the Business Awards had forced him to sit back and reflect on the growth the company has experienced.

“You realise you created something special that is beneficial to all the people who work here,” he said.

Melbourne Youth Chorale (MYC) – formerly the Berwick Youth Choir – was looking forward to performing one of the world’s most famous operas, Carmen, with Opera Australia at Bunjil Place and Frankston.

But the circuit breaker lockdown put paid to that plan with the performance cancelled.

One of the choristers, Aiden, said he was sad to miss out on the performance.

“But I’ve learned songs that I never thought I’d sing in my life,” he said.

“It was still a great opportunity to have

practised them. I hope we’ll be able to be part of something like this in the future.”

There is a chance that the performance will be rescheduled to a future date.

In the meantime, MYC returned to online rehearsals over the lockdown.

Choristers are now looking forward to the chorale’s upcoming Singathon, which can take place whether in lockdown or not.

Throughout term three, choristers aim to learn 600 new songs or exercises which will aid their music education.

This will be on top of what they learn in their normal rehearsals.

It’s a big task, but one they’re ready to take on after a difficult year.

And there’s even more to celebrate as MYC turns 35 this year.

As part of the celebrations, MYC is honouring the memory of its founder, the late Jean Heriot, by continuing her mission to inspire and educate young people aged six-20 through high quality choral and musicianship education.

The choir currently operates on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis, relying on community support for its activities.

In conjunction with the Singathon, the

MYC is making a public appeal for help from the community.

It costs MYC around $1000 a year per chorister to operate.

Public contributions will be used to offer musical education to children and young people regardless of their financial background.

The money goes towards employing teachers trained and experienced in the Kodaly music education method as well as covering administration costs, venue hire, new repertoire, camps, performances and special projects.

Roads close for upgrade

By Danielle Kutchel A number of road closures will take place over the coming weeks as part of the O’Shea Road upgrade in Berwick.

To start intersection upgrade works, Bridgewater Boulevard and Jembecca Drive will be closed at O’Shea Road from 8pm Friday 25 June to 5am Sunday 12 July.

Drivers can detour via Skyline Way, Cresthaven Boulevard or Viewgrand Drive.

To set up safety barriers at Bridgewater Boulevard, O’Shea Road will be closed between Skyline Way and Soldiers Road from 8pm Friday 25 June to 5am Saturday 26 June.

Drivers can detour via Skyline Way, Cresthaven Boulevard and Viewgrand Drive or via Kimbarra Drive and Streeton Way. To complete service relocation works, the left lane of Clyde Road will be closed southbound between O’Shea Road and Cresthaven Boulevard on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 June from 9.30am to 3pm.

The entrance to Eden Rise Village will remain open for shoppers.

Meanwhile, works are continuing throughout June to inspect and relocate utilities above and below the ground including electricity, telecommunications, gas and water.

Any service disruptions will be communicated to residents by their service provider.

The shared use path between Skyline Way

Keep an eye out for roadworks around O’Shea Road. and Riviera Drive will be closed to pedestrians from Sunday 20 June until late 2021.

Pedestrian detours are via Skyline Way, Cresthaven Boulevard, Bridgewater Boulevard and Hawkesbury Street.

There are also a number of pedestrian detours in place along O’Shea, Soldiers, Clyde and Greaves roads.

School pathway problem supportive of the project, including the new school gate connected to the new path, and stressed the school had not been asked to financially contribute to the project.

“The new, additional school gate location will provide an all-weather alternative, which can be used during the wet season,” she said.

Kids are back in the pool Local kids are jumping back into the pools now lockdown has lifted and are swimming their way through winter, with Jump Swim Schools experiencing its highest winter enrolment numbers on record.

At Jump locations including Berwick, Cranbourne West, Lynbrook, Pakenham and Pakenham Lakes kids are still jumping into the pool despite the plummeting temperatures to ensure they keep up their life-saving swim skills year-round and get back up to speed after two weeks of pool closures.

Swimming through the winter months is the most important thing you can do to prepare a child for the summer months of beach and pool visits and to ensure their skills remain

at a level where they could save their own life if the unthinkable accident was to occur, even during winter said Jump Swim Schools CEO Mark Collins.

“Water accidents don’t always happen in summer. According to the most recent Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report, drownings in February were actually the same as the number in July,” he said.

“The report also shows that 19 per cent of drowning deaths happen in winter.

“It only takes two to three weeks to start losing core swimming skills. If children take the winter months off, by the time they go on September school holidays, they’ve lost most

of their skills which puts them at serious risk.”

Mr Collins said children who continued swimming through winter could advance up to two levels by the time the warm season rolled around again.

“Summer swimmers are made in winter,” he said.

“Lockdowns have definitely interrupted lessons and swimming progress in Victoria, so it’s more important than ever to get back to the pool.”

3yo kinder places to open soon Registrations will open on 1 July 2021 for families wishing to send their child to a City of Casey funded three-year-old kindergarten program next year.

Families will be able to register their child by using the online kindergarten parent portal on the City of Casey website.

To be eligible to attend a three-yearold kindergarten service, your child must be three years old by 30 April of the year they start kindergarten.

While the council has delivered a funded four-year-old kindergarten program for many years, 2022 will be the first time Casey Council will also provide a funded three year old kindergarten program.

The council made the decision to expand its kindergarten service in February and will determine which kindergartens will provide a three-year-old program following the registration period. Centres will be selected based on demand for the service and the viability of the program at individual locations.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff said research has shown that attending a quality kindergarten program had long lasting benefits for children both socially and academically.

“Kindergarten is an important step for young children and gives them the opportunity to develop and learn valuable skills that help prepare them for school,” she said.

“Our qualified educators deliver an environment that encourages children’s natural curiosity, guides their learning and supports them in developing social relationships and communication.

“I encourage families who are considering kindergarten for their child to visit the council’s website, where you can find all the information you need to help you make the best choices for your child and family.”

Refugee rights actions

By Danielle Kutchel Casey Cardinia for Refugees is marking Refugee Week with a stall at Pakenham Library.

The stall features information about the situation that refugees face in Australia.

Members of Casey Cardinia for Refugees will be on hand to explain a bit about what they do.

A spokesperson for the group, Margaret, said the aim of Refugee Week was to “highlight all of the amazing contributions that refugees

make all over Australia and also to raise awareness about the issues facing refugees and the growing difficulties refugees face in finding protection in countries like Australia.”

The group has been raising awareness of these problems for four years now, with weekly vigils in the Berwick High Street and regular letter-writing to La Trobe MP – and Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs – Jason Wood.

Members of the group also regularly attend rallies for refugee rights.

Meanwhile, for the month of June Casey Cardinia Libraries is partnering with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to collect donations of groceries and other essential products to give to around 1000 people per week, most of whom have no income or work rights.

Items needed include tuna in oil, tinned vegetables and tomatoes, coconut cream, hand sanitiser and soap.

A spokesperson for Casey Cardinia Libraries encouraged anyone who is able, to donate items at their nearest library location.

“Casey Cardinia Libraries are thrilled to be working with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre helping get food, toiletries and cleaning products to those who need it,” the spokesperson said.

“Please bring donations you can spare to any of our libraries.”

Students at Rivercrest Christian College in Clyde North are literally as happy as pigs in mud!

Recently the Rivercrest four-year-old group paid a visit to the 25 acre environmental reserve that is literally walking distance from their classrooms.

Students put on their gumboots and packed an extra set of clothes for their visit to the reserve, which was full of wonder and surprise!

“To have access to such a wonderful resource is such a blessing for our students, “ said Donna Adams, an early years teacher at the school.

The school runs a fortnightly Bush Kinder program that allows students to explore the waterways, native trees and bird hides of the environmental reserve.

The visits are not only a great setting for the children to enjoy some fresh air but also are full of educational opportunities.

The children are supported as they challenge their gross motor skills, explore nature and develop play skills.

Students also explore the impacts of human activity on the world around them, and discuss ways they can care for the native flora and fauna.

“They experience first-hand the wonder and beauty of the natural world, while learning skills such as observation and experimentation,” said Mrs Adams.

And the best thing is, they get to jump in muddy puddles!

Rat-runs, u-turns a worry off Memorial Drive to prevent rat· Closing running building a three-way intersection

By Danielle Kutchel Community feedback has revealed concerns over the Narre Warren North Road Upgrade.

Major Road Projects Victoria released draft designs for the upgrade in March for community consultation, and has this month published a report featuring the feedback received.

Residents have told the construction authority that they’re concerned about access changes to Crawley and Brundrett roads.

About 90 per cent of feedback referred to this issue, according to the report.

Residents said that Memorial Drive is used as a rat-run, with much of the traffic exiting the road turning left towards Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.

Brundrett and Cantwell roads were also cited as rat-runs to access Crawley Road, and residents said they expected more traffic using these roads if the right turn from Narre Warren North Road into Crawley Road was removed.

Residents also reported that Narre Warren North Road is the primary access point in and out of Crawley Road.

According to the report, people living on Crawley and Brundrett roads felt that removing the right turn option onto Narre Warren North Road would make getting to Narre Warren North Primary School and the Narre Warren North Village Centre “inconvenient”.

A view was also reported that U-turns will add to congestion on Narre Warren North Road, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times or event days for the nearby pony club, and potentially lead to accidents.

As alternatives, residents suggested: Reinstating access to Crawley and Brundrett roads.

Moving the traffic lights to Crawley Road to facilitate the greater number of right turn movements.

at Memorial Drive, Crawley Road and Narre Warren North Road with either traffic lights or a roundabout.

Synchronising traffic lights along Narre Warren North Road once the upgrade is completed to improve traffic flow.

The project design will be finalised in late 2021.

According to Major Road Projects Victoria, the upgrade will include: Building an extra lane in each direction between Fox Road and Belgrave-Hallam Road.

Adding a dedicated right turn lane from Heatherton Road to Narre Warren North Road northbound.

Installing traffic lights at the Memorial Drive intersection.

Adding an extra through lane in each direction on Narre Warren North Road at the Ernst Wanke Road intersection and extending the right and left turn lanes.

Modifying access to and from Crawley Road.

Banning right turns from Brundrett Road.

According to Major Road Projects Victoria the project will also improve active transport options by upgrading existing and building new walking and cycling paths and providing better public transport connections.

Construction is due to start later this year and be completed in 2023.

To the moon and back at Bunjil Visitors to Bunjil Place these school holidays are in for a treat, when UK artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon takes over the Bunjil Place Plaza from Saturday 26 June – Sunday 4 July.

Suspended over the grand plaza area, the Museum of the Moon will be open to visit daily from 11am-9pm.

Mr Jerram’s giant replica of the earth’s moon measures seven metres in diameter, with every centimetre of the spherical sculpture representing five kilometres of the moon’s surface.

The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composed

by BAFTA and award-winning composer, Dan Jones.

Originally set to debut as part of Melbourne’s highly anticipated RISING festival, the chance to get up-close with a giant replica of the moon was cut short due to Melbourne’s recent lockdown.

Luckily, visitors will have another opportunity to experience the installation for 10 days as part of the Casey Winter Arts Festival.

Mr Jerram – the man behind the moon – created the artwork to reconnect with the night sky and amplify the experience of gazing at the moon.

Top tax tips released for Australian small business Australia has released a list of top tips for small business this tax time.

Running a small business is always a challenge and COVID-19 has created significant new challenges for many. Tax can often be an afterthought, but it is important, especially this year, to make time to look at your books, make sure you are up to date on your tax obligations and, most importantly, access any tax concessions that are available to help your business.

A visit to your tax agent can also give you the opportunity to step back, evaluate your business performance and prepare for the next financial year. Many small businesses are struggling right now and it is important to undertake cash flow analysis and develop a business recovery plan.

CPA Australia’s tax policy adviser Elinor Kasapidis said that “When it comes to your tax return, COVID-19 impacts may have created a range of new tax issues for many businesses and a tax agent can help navigate the range of

concessions and specific tax impacts. Small businesses should ensure their bookkeeping, JobKeeper records and lodgments are correct and up to date“.

“It’s also important for taxpayers to be upfront and honest with their tax agent and the ATO. Even with COVID-19 placing pressure on business cash flow, the onus remains on business owners to correctly report their income, claim their expenses and have the appropriate records. Payment plans are also available to manage your tax debts with the ATO,” Ms Kasapidis said.

Your tax agent is required to take reasonable care when preparing your return which means they may ask you detailed questions about your cashflow, business performance, personal use of assets and records.

If you have made errors or need to correct your business records, speak with a CPA Australia-registered tax agent who can work with you and the ATO to get things right.

Ms Kasapidis also advised that taxpayers

should “obtain professional tax advice, especially in areas where more complex tax issues arise. This includes losses, restructures, capital gains tax, personal services income, trust declarations and distributions, and private company loans.”

Soaps tested by family

By Danielle Kutchel A desire to better look after her family’s sensitive skin has blossomed into a successful small business for Narre Warren mother Deb Terkely.

For 20 years now, Ms Terkely’s family has been making soaps that specifically catered to their own skin conditions.

After family members found their conditions were aggravated when using supermarket products, they took the problem into their own hands – literally – by making their own cleansing products that are chemical-free and made with high-quality essential oils.

Ms Terkely now carries on the family tradition through her business, L’ada Soaps and Scents, using a soap recipe perfected over two decades.

She and her family try each product themselves first before trying to sell them, roadtesting them until they’re ready.

For Ms Terkely, soapmaking is not just a business; it’s a passion, born of a desire to help people.

Partly, it’s about helping people to find skincare that works for them.

But it’s also partly about helping other small businesses to thrive.

Ms Terkely said L’ada only used Australian suppliers for its needs and she checks first to ensure they come from sustainable sources.

She also likes to support other female entrepreneurs, lifting them up along with their businesses.

As a working mother herself, the entrepre-

neur said running L’ada had been a learning curve.

“Time management isn’t my best skill,” she said.

Her children provide the ultimate motivation, she said, and everything she does – including running her business – is for them.

“I make it work. I do late nights, or if they’re both in school and kinder I work then. Otherwise, they only get half a mum,” she said.

She donates her products to kinder and school raffles as well and said she’s attracted to “anything that is going to go to a good cause”, like the Ovarian Cancer Foundation which she has also donated to in the past.

“Even kinders that are run on donations and fundraising – my son’s kinder relies heavily on donations and fundraising, and we think it’s important for kids to have access to good education from a young age,” she explained.

Ms Terkely said her business was tapping into a movement of sorts, with customers more keen than ever to know what is in the products they use and where they come from.

“People are very conscious of what’s going in and what they’re using,” she said.

She’s inspired by the knowledge that her products work for people who may be down to their last resort.

“I’m very passionate; it’s about helping people and making them feel comfortable,” she said.

There were 14 division one winning entries across Australia in TattsLotto draw 4165, drawn Saturday 19 June.

Five of the division one winning entries landed in Melbourne.

Each division one winning entry took home $1,428,571.43.

And 28 TattsLotto players from Melbourne had a winning start to their week when they shared a $1.6 million division one prize from the draw as part of a syndicate.

Above and below the line thinking drives results

By Ian Ash ACC, AInstIB, managing director OrgMent Business Solutions It’s amazing how some of the simplest things can bring amazing clarity to personal performance.

In particular, there are a whole raft of simple tools and models which illustrate key concepts and form simple, practical ways of improving business and personal performance.

I love using these in my work with business leaders as they are typically very easy to remember and apply.

One such tool is something called “Above and Below the Line” and although this term has particular meanings in advertising, marketing and corporate values, I would like to talk about it in terms of our own thinking and approach to our work.

Put simply, we can all operate according to one of two belief systems: 1. ‘Below the Line’: in which things typically happen to us over which we have little or no control; or 2. ‘Above the Line’: in which we create our own destiny and can actually influence how things turn out.

People operating from a ‘Below the Line’ perspective subscribe to a ‘victim’ mentality. They believe that stuff happens to them and that they are powerless to control their future. They literally become victims of circumstance, unable to materially affect outcomes.

You will often hear them say things like “see, this always happen to me” and “I told you I could not do it” and there is no shortage of excuses when things don’t get done or go wrong.

And unfortunately that’s what tends to happen, things don’t get done, but it is never their responsibility. These people see problems in opportunities and their conversation is characterized by BED (Blame, Excuses and Denial).

As a result, ‘Below the Line’ thinkers are pessimistic and typically more stressed since stress is a symptom of feeling a lack of control.

There is a better place to be, namely ‘Above the Line’. By comparison, ‘Above the Line’ thinkers recognise that although things may go wrong or not pan out as expected, there are always choices.

These people have a ‘victor’ mentality in that they know they can win and achieve.

They see opportunities in problems and are typically more relaxed and optimistic knowing that they can influence outcomes.

There is an acronym for the ‘victors’ as well – OAR (Ownership, Accountability and Responsibility). This means that even when things don’t work out, they own the result, learn from it (‘Growth Mindset’) and do it better next time.

The good news is that while we may all drop into ‘Below the Line’ thinking from time to time, we don’t need to stay there – we can actually choose which of the two paradigms to operate from.

It is not always easy being ‘Above the Line’ (how many of us are ready to admit it when we stuff up?), but in the long term not only does this bring better results, it will create respect amongst others and is hence an invaluable tool for leadership.

Here’s to all the ‘victors’ out there!

The true Keys to success

By David Nagel The Cranbourne father-daughter training partnership of Ken and Kasey Keys shocked the racing world on Saturday when their threeyear-old Free To Move scored an unlikely victory in the $140,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Given an aggressive ride by jockey Craig Newitt, the Unencumbered gelding sat on speed throughout and fought off several late challenges to win at the ultimate outsider odds of 100/1.

Kasey Keys wasn’t as surprised as the many punters who were tearing up their tickets after the second leg of the quadrella.

“I was pretty confident we could run a place, obviously we were scared of the favourite (Curran), but when there was some give in the track, I thought he was a really good chance,” Keys told Racing.com after the race.

Free To Move was having his second attempt at Listed level after running third to Ocean Beyond and Deep Speed in the McKenzie Stakes at Mooney Valley in November last year.

Free To Move has now won three of his 11 starts, with Saturday’s $84,000 first prize taking his career earnings to a tick over $274,000.

Cranbourne trainers made a real impact at headquarters on Saturday with Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young kickstarting the program in grand style when Celestial Fury made a successful debut in the $125,000 Two-Year-Old Handicap (1420m).

The Savabeel colt won a jump-out at Cranbourne on June 7 and backed that up with an impressive display that suggests he will get over more ground.

Celestial Fury was hard-ridden by jockey Craig Newitt as the field hit the 400-metre pole, but had too much in the tank for the race favourites, Secret Glamour ($3.50) and Somewatt Fabulous ($2.90) to win by a long-neck on the line.

Charlotte greets the judges on the double

By David Nagel A new treadmill might be just the beginning of renovations to the Pakenham stables of trainer Charlotte Littlefield after the popular local prepared two winners in three days last week.

Littlefield trained Merle The Pearl to victory in the $50,000 BM70 Three-Year-Old Fillies Handicap (1600m) at Sandown on Wednesday, before Prince Alby made it a great week for the stable with a narrow victory in Friday’s $35,000 BM64 Handicap (2418m) at Geelong.

Merle The Pearl made it back-to-back victories at Sandown, pleasing Littlefield after a four-week let up after a barnstorming fivelength victory on her home track at Pakenham on May 20.

Littlefield said the three-year-old filly had always shown promise and the timing of her winning streak was impeccable.

“We’ve always had a nice opinion of her and it’s just great that she’s built gradually through the grades,” Littlefield said.

“We own 50 per cent of her, which is fantastic, and I think I’m going to thank Luke (Currie) personally because we were getting a bit dire there.

“We just purchased a tread mill because things are really taking off with the move to Pakenham, so every little bit extra really helps at the moment.”

Littlefield said the daughter of Anacheeva/Lovely You’re Here would continue to improve when she comes back from the paddock as a four-year-old mare.

“Her owner did get quite excited after her last start and said he could see her attacking a decent race at some point in the future,” she said.

“I think if we put her in the paddock after today and bring her back as a four year old I think she’ll come back much better as an older mare, but she certainly did a really great job today.”

Jockey Luke Currie was also impressed with the win, coming off a four-week freshen up.

“She was a little bit keen due to a bit of time between runs and also up to the mile, so I was a little bit worried that she might be vulnerable late, but she wasn’t, she was good and strong to the line.

“She won really well last time, albeit on the synthetic. She handled the soft going today and showed a nice turn of foot, she’s only lightly raced so she’ll improve off that.

“I just said to Charlotte that I wouldn’t be in a hurry to step her out further now and she said she’ll take her away for a break now anyway. She’ll come back and furnish into a nice mare.”

Merle The Pearl is only lightly raced with Wednesday’s victory her second win from four career starts.

Prince Alby earned a thoroughly deserved victory with the seven-year-old gelding cap-

ping off a consistent preparation with a neckwin at Geelong on Friday.

Littlefield had Prince Alby in fine form last winter, scoring two wins and four placings from six starts, and the pair look set for another strong preparation this time around.

Prince Alby put the writing on the wall with a second placing at Sale, over 2232m, last start, and went one better after jockey Ben Melham timed his run to perfection.

“He’s a horse that has no tactical speed and he comes off the bridle but he really comes into his own on these wet tracks,” Melham said after the race.

“I was following the favourite and knew we had him covered shortly after straightening, he let down well and he’s a good strong stayer at this trip.

“Once I did get him through his gears he levelled out and he quickened up quite well.

“I think when he got to the front he had a

bit of a look around and sort of waited a little bit, but he’s in at the right time of year and he’s a good wet tracker, particularly at this trip.”

Prince Alby had a nine-start preparation last year, so expect him to continue to churn out the runs with this win coming at just his fourth run this campaign.

Gun Pakenham-trainer Phillip Stokes made it back-to-back victories for Pakenham trainers when his three-year-old gelding Bottom Line won over the 1412-metre journey at Geelong.

Bottom Line started a short $2.30 favourite and confirmed that quote with a strong win, his second from eight starts.

Jockey Ben Allen said the victory was even more meritorious than it appeared with Bottom Line not having the race run to suit.

“He’s a big horse and I really wanted to keep him one off and give him his own room but we didn’t have the luxury of that today so I had to go back to the fence and just bide our time and ride for luck,” Allen said.

“He’s a big horse and doesn’t like being crowded on the inside and coming down the hill it was quite cut up and was definitely the inferior ground. The second horse was able to come out and build into it where I just had to take the runs where I could.

“But once he got out to the better going he knuckled down and was tough.”

Stokes had a big say in proceedings at Flemington on Saturday as well with his three-year-old filly Unique Artist ($34) donkey-licking her rivals in the $135,000 Sir Henry Bolte Handicap (2000m).

Kiwi-jockey Michael Dee gave Unique Artist a dream run throughout and the pair bolted away down the famous Flemington straight to win by three lengths.

Unique Artist, who knocked many – including this punter – out of the first leg of the quaddie has now won back-to-back races after a five-length stroll at Pakenham Last start.

By Tyler Lewis “It’s going to be so different, but I think these are the Olympics that are going to be remembered throughout time, and to be able to experience that – it will be incredible.”

Sergei Evglevski is about to embark on an enormous journey, his biggest to date – from Berwick to the Tokyo Olympics.

And the Olympic Pistol shooter believes it’s going to be one remembered for a long time.

It’s been a different year for the nations Olympians, Evglevski touched on the extra year of preparation, a year he feels has assisted in developing his maturity.

“It’s (the additional year) has had its ups and downs in all honesty,” he said.

“I know an upside to it is I have really matured, comparing to this time last year I have felt a lot more stable.

“Obviously one of the downsides is it has been a bit of a waiting game and heaps of uncertainty.

“Just have to live every day one day at a time

and keep going forward.

“We had quite a bit of a break, it wasn’t long after selections that they announced covid and everything getting delayed.

“We lowered our intensity so we could build back up for the 2021 games,” Evglevski said.

Travelling internationally is uncommon in this current time, but it is going to be an uncommon games, where the competitors will have to undergo intense testing to maintain safety.

“I think it’s one of those situations where we have to be really cautious and really safe,” he said.

“I know we’re doing testing every day, we test 96 hours before we leave, 72 hours before we leave and then once we arrive, I think we either test as soon as we get off the pane or on the plane.

“We have to test negative every time and provide evidence that we’ve been vaccinated, it’s really serious but I think it’s the best thing for the athletes.

“It’s probably just the safest thing they could for the athletes.”

Evglevski is born and raised in Olympic shooting royalty, with mum Lalita Yauhleuskaya competing at six games, two for Belarus in 1996 and 2000, and four for Australia in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

His family have helped him in many ways along his journey, but have also prepared him for something other than competing.

“With everything in my family, with what my mum has told me, I think the dining hall is going to be one of the best things there,” he joked.

“When I went to the dining hall at the Commonwealth Games it was awesome, with these Olympics it won’t be as busy, which is fair enough.

“I think the experience with the Olympic games is all I can ask for.

“They’ve been ridiculously supportive, anything I need they’ve been there to help.

“I have always been tought to fight my own

battles, I know I have their support 24/7, but I try to do it myself because that’s what they’ve taught me.

“They’ve lived it, they always know what to say.”

Some athletes are pleased with making the Olympic squad, others aren’t satisfied with anything but a podium finish.

Evglevski, however, has his sights = set on competing at the best he can.

“I don’t have anything specific like that, but for me, with the amount of time I have put in is get there and try my hardest,” he said.

“If I get there and get bottom ten, but I tried my hardest, I’ll be happy, if I know I gave 110%, I’ll be happy.

“But if I go and say, ‘oh I have made it, I’m happy’ and half ass everything, that’s when I will be the most disappointed.

“Going in there and giving it my full effort is all I can do,” Evlgevski said.

The 2021 summer Tokyo Olympic games are set to commence July 23.

The Mega Swim is back As many as 100 locals will be getting in the pool at Casey RACE this July to support people living with multiple sclerosis at the iconic annual fundraising event, the Casey MS Mega Swim.

Since the first event in 2012, Casey locals have swum over 3,000km and raised $129,454.

Kicking off at 12pm Saturday 10 July, teams will swim relay style for a full 24 hours until wrap up at 12pm on Sunday 11 July.

People of all ages and abilities can participate in the Casey MS Mega Swim, which this year aims to raise $15,000 - vital funds that contribute to MS Go for Gold Scholarships, Financial Assistance Programs and services that directly benefit those living with MS. MS Go for Gold Scholarships are awarded to a person living with MS that wants to achieve a goal or dream, such as being able to attend an exercise program, purchase equipment, undertake a course or travel.

Norm urges that anyone can participate in the event.

He says “You can join up as a solo swimmer and you’ll be allocated to a team. Or, why not get a team together. The teams are made up of swimmers of all abilities, friends and family. They love to have fun on pool deck and meet fellow swimmers all the while knowing they are supporting such a worthy cause.”

The powerhouse president

By Tyler Lewis Glenn Gambetta has enjoyed one of the most successful tenures as a football club president in his half a decade stint as president of the Berwick Football Club.

Volunteering and the Berwick Football Club is in his blood, his mother Maxine is a life member of the club for her work as a volunteer.

“When my son was at the junior club, I coached the under-9’s and 10’s,” Gambetta said of his first role as a volunteer.

“I was the vice president of football for five years, then I left the junior club and went up to the senior club.

“First year I was straight in as president, in 2015 they wanted me to take over the presidency, I said no because I still had one year left at the junior club.

“Someone stepped in for that year as president and I took over in 2016, it was tricky because you don’t know who’s who in the zoo, but we worked through it,” Gambetta said.

Over his time Gambetta has seen plenty of glory, with the club winning a plethora of games and stacking the silverware cabinet at Edwin Flack Reserve.

“I think the foundations had been laid before I got there, they were certainly heading in

the right direction after a few rough years,” he said.

“For me personally, it certainly makes life easier when you’re winning games, I’ve been rapt that we have been able to sustain it.

“I think getting to a level where we could move into the Eastern Footy League has been the biggest accomplishment, over the premierships.”

Gambetta was at the top when the club made the bold move to the Eastern Football League, he touched on how that process came about.

“The old SEFNL was in a world of hurt, everyone was pulling out, we would’ve ended up with only six or seven clubs,” he said.

“Clubs had to find a new competition, we had two choices, one was to go to Eastern, or the other was to join the Yarra Valley in the Outer East – we looked at both – lots of meetings.

“We ended up going with Outer East, more or less because originally we wanted to stick with clubs we had been with, but then we realised that it wasn’t for us, so we ended up going to Eastern.

“It wasn’t an easy process, it was very time consuming,” Gambetta said.

All volunteers have something specific they love about their club, for Gambetta it is getting

to put back into a great club with all his mates he played with in his career with the Wickers.

“I played all my football at Berwick, started at 10 and gave it away when I was 30,” he said.

“The fact that I am involved at the club with guys I played my football with is the most enjoyable.

“They’re on the committee or in fundraising roles or coaching roles, the other thing is now my son is at the senior club, they’re the two I am enjoying the most.”

Berwick has had some superstars walk through the doors, but Gambetta definitely has his favourites that he likes to keep a close eye for on a Saturday, while also revealing what he is most proud of.

“I love watching my son, he is in the reserves at the moment,” he said.

“I love watching the old boys get up, Tucky (Travis Tuck), Madi Andrews.

“They’re superstars but they just keep on keeping on.

“Leading a committee that has invested in the club and created - for the next generation - a facility with new lights, electronic scoreboard, goal netting, modernised social and change rooms and a new canteen.“ The Wickers suffered a loss on Saturday, but are certainly getting their wish in a much closer competition.

Berwick Springs Titans build resilience and stay positive

By Nick Creely There is a steely resilience about the Berwick Springs Football and Netball Club.

Covid-19 has impacted community sport clubs immensely, but for a new senior club looking to build a reputation and find its feet, staying united has been a challenge.

But these Titans keep forging ahead despite its inaugural season in 2020 being taken away from them and just six games this season and more challenges with lockdowns and restrictions.

They are times that are building the resolve of communities, and the Titans are no different.

Titans senior coach Rodney Benstead admitted that times have been tough at the new senior club, but remains proud of everyone involved for pushing ahead with hope and is hopeful that the club and community will only become stronger.

“We can’t shy away from it - we’ve been training at Sweeney where the lights didn’t work - and getting in and out of your car without club rooms,” he said.

“I’m really proud, I want to make this experience really enjoyable - hopefully this can bring us closer together, and build some resilience.

“There’s no doubt it’s been really difficult, and to come out on the ground on Tuesday where it was our home for the first time, it was special.

“The next phase is staying back, having a beer or a soft drink, having something to eat together - when you start a new club, when you can’t do that, it takes a toll, affects your morale and spirit.

“You can stay positive, but the last two years have been difficult - starting a new club in this day and age has its challenges.”

Benstead added that interacting with the community and building a presence has had its difficulties.

“It’s a difficult year for all clubs, with volunteers, trainers, processes and procedures,

and I guess more difficult for a new club,” he said.

“We’re trying to tap into the community, and it’s been difficult because everyone’s been impacted by this.

“Like every club, we’re in the same boat.”

The Titans had the bye on the weekend, but will return to the field in a special occasion on Saturday, with the club to play its first ever home game at its ground at Mick Morland Reserve in Clyde North.

Benstead said that the group - and the entire club - simply couldn’t wait to get out there.

“We’ve had some good news, we’ve finally got into our new ground, so that was a real big boost for the club, to give us a home to go to has been really exciting,” he said.

“Having a home, and having the players together creates real camaraderie, so we’re really looking forward to it.

“We’ve had some disappointing results, but the players have never stopped trying,

“I said to the players, we were 20 points in front of Gembrook at half time, we lost a few experienced players and there was a big shift in our performance,” he said.

“At this level it’s the skills, and the fundamentals - we’ve got to look at all aspects of our game, and get our skills up to the level.

“We’ll try and play some more kids, we want to build something - some of the performances from some of our senior players like Daniel Ousley, Daniel Nelson, Nick Rattle has laid some big tackles and hasn’t stopped trying. If we can inject some kids around them and build on that, that’d be great - we just want to be competitive, and try hard every week.

“We’ve played some good teams, and played some young kids, but we’ve stuck together. We want to see improvement across the ground, and stay competitive - as I said, we were 20 points up on Gembrook, and that’s the type of footy we want to get back to.”

Benstead said the bye has come at a pretty good time for his club, who sit 1-5 but have played some exciting, energetic football, with the Titans hopeful of welcoming back some of its key senior players for the home clash.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries, so the break away has come at the right time for us - we’ve lost a lot of experienced players through shoulders and so forth, we’ve had a bad run,” he said.

“We’ll get some guys back, so I’m happy as a coach to have a break and reset - it did come at the right time, and hopefully some experience comes back into the side.”

Despite its fair share of injuries, with Benstead needing to cover the loss of at least nine senior players, there have been plenty of positives to build on in the back-end of the Division 1 season, which included a Round 1 win against Belgrave and competitive per-

Eagles too classy

By Nick Creely Woori Yallock played some valiant football in AFL Outer East Premier Division on Saturday, but were overpowered by a slick Beaconsfield unit, 11.10 (76) to 3.7 (25).

The Eagles slammed on seven goals to two in the second half to run away 51-point winners, with big man Harrison Coe and Jamie Plumridge incredibly impressive. Casey Demons star Jimmy Munro was also instrumental in the victory with his poise and leadership around stoppages.

Eagles coach Mick Fogarty said his group expected a tough challenge from the Tigers on the road in the return of local footy – and that’s exactly what they got.

“We started well, and hit the scoreboard which was pleasing, and to Woori’s credit they tightened the game up and didn’t allow us to ease transition out of D50,” he said.

“Their pressure was really strong – we reset at half-time and put some scoreboard pressure on – our fitness was great, it was a telling factor, so I’m pleased with that. “(But) Woori’s pressure was full on.”

Narre Warren got the job done against Upwey Tecoma at The Superdome, 12.15 (87) to 5.3 (33).

Despite a competitive display from the Tigers, the reigning premiers took control after quarter time with 11 goals to four in the remaining three quarters.

Luke Hartley, Tom Miller and Jake Richardson were among the best for the Magpies - Richardson in particular was instrumental off half-back late in the piece.

Doveton suffered a tough loss, meanwhile, going down to Olinda Ferny Creek after a last quarter fadeout, 10.17 (77) to 3.10 (28).

It was Berwick’s lowest score since moving to Eastern – exactly half of its 9.4.58 score line from its round two loss to Rowville.

Michael Riseley and Riley Heddles repelled the Lions forward thrusts across half back, while Jayden Graham and Kristian Meredith were others to defend well in a game where the opposition had 22 scoring shots to nine.

The class of the visitors took hold in the second half as they banked an important win.

Narre South Saints were offered a stern test

by Ashwood in Southern div three on Saturday, but the fourth-placed Saints stood tall to record a 29-point win, 11.10 (76) to 5.17 (47).

While the home team did lead the contest at every change, the visitors could have very

nearly pinched a win had it not been for poor kicking.

For the Saints, Brad Little was superb, while Brandon Nolan slotted five goals.

Doveton Eagles, meanwhile, went down to Black Rock, 16.17 (113) to 4.0 (24), while Endeavour Hills fell short against Clayton on the road, 11.6 (72) to 8.7 (55) despite playing strong football throughout the afternoon.

In division four, Hallam collected a comfortable win against Frankston Dolphins, 9.8 (62) to 5.4 (34) on Saturday.

The Hawks built their lead throughout but the game was still up for grabs at the final change. The home team slammed on four goals to one to cap off a solid team performance.

Rory McIvor was sublime for the Hawks, while Tom Bradley’s three majors proved vital in the context of the match.

Lyndhurst, meanwhile, fell in disappointing fashion to ladder leading Carrum Patterson Lakes, 14.11 (95) to 6.4 (40).

On a tough afternoon for the secondplaced Lightning, Charlie Gardiner was the clear standout with two goals.

Tigers pip Eagles in a one-point thriller Woori Yallock has clinched a potentially season-defining win in AFL Outer East Premier Division, defeating Beaconsfield by just one goal, 51-50.

The seventh-placed Tigers are now equal on points with Berwick in fifth, with the Eagles on the other hand losing its second place spot as a result of the loss.

Despite the visitors surging out to a dominant 9-15 start, the home clawed back superbly, levelling the scores at the major break 25-25.

The scores were too level at the end of the third period at 39-39 apiece, before the home side found just enough momentum to get the job done in a tense and tight affair.

Mia Sudomirski (33 goals) was all class for the Tigers, while Alana McGurgan and Sarah Hogan were also named in the best for the victors.

For the Eagles, Danielle Cameron, Elizabeth Murphy and Ashleigh Gill were valiant in defeat.

At Edwin Flack Reserve, Berwick edged out Wandin in a vital clash, 52-49.

The Wickers held sway for the majority of the clash, but the Dogs refused to go away, drawing to within one goal at the final change, and battled hard before the home side steadied enough late to clinch the points.

Emily Pupuke (19 goals) was destructive for the Wickers, while Hayley Stewart roamed the court and had a big influence, while Mel Webster was a rock in defence.

In the remaining match, ladder leaders Olinda Ferny Creek proved too strong for the winless Doveton, winning 74-53,
