State-of-the-art facilities Building works are steaming ahead at Crest Education with both Hillcrest Christian College and Rivercrest Christian College having just completed major projects, with more to come in 2022.

Hillcrest Christian College Primary students are enjoying the College’s new, state-of-the-art Multi-Purpose Centre, opened at the start of the year. Complete with kitchen, portable stage and integrated sound system, this modern facility is enabling primary-aged students to engage in sport and physical activity in all weather conditions ensuring students stay healthy and active.

“This space has been perfect for the students. Sheltering us from the hot sun in summer and protecting us from the rain and the cold now that the weather is not as good” says Leanne Dube, Hillcrest Primary Sport Coordinator.

Surrounding the new Multi-Purpose Centre is a high-quality grass field and recently opened outdoor basketball court with striking colour palette. Students have been using this space since late May and are loving it.

Even during remote learning last year, Hillcrest continued to develop its resources and expand its student offerings. Works completed at Hillcrest in 2020 included: STEAM Precinct Art and Design Gallery STEAM Exploration Centre 3D Printing Space IT Service Desk Film and Media Centre Years 5 and 6 Block Upgrade of ELC playground Rivercrest Christian College welcomed their Year Two students to their new, purpose-built Year Two building at the start of the school year.

tian College’s Middle Years Campus, which will see a new Performing Arts building and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) building come into fruition. This ground-breaking project was made possible through the approval of a $5 million grant.

This construction builds upon the recent expansion of the Rivercrest Middle Years campus, which recently added 4 new classrooms and break out spaces for its Secondary-aged students. This campus aims to serve Years 6 - 12 students by 2025.

Situated in Clyde North, Rivercrest Christian College and Hillcrest Christian College are holding Open Morning Sessions for prospective Secondary parents on Tuesday, 1 June. Registrations is essential and parents can RSVP via scanning the QR code on the respective college websites.

Little learners at Heritage College have a new space in which to learn following the opening of an upgraded and expanded early learning centre at the school.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas visited Heritage College on Monday 17 May to open the centre in an event hosted by principal Sonny Aiono, with staff, students and families in attendance. $500,000 in funding for this important project was provided by the Victorian Government under the Children’s Facilities Capital Program Major Grant - Early Learning Facility Upgrade grant, with Seventh-day Adventist Schools (Victoria) Limited providing $289,752.

This upgrade was delivered by Kneeler Design Architects and Chippa Constructions and will increase the kindergarten’s capacity at the school with two classrooms, a reception area, office, amenities, and landscaping works.

The centre will allow local families to have more choices with long day care, outside school hours care, and vacation care services.

In an Australian-first, the State Government has provided almost $5 billion to deliver a full 15 hours of three-year-old kinder to every Victorian child over the next decade, with the rollout beginning in 2020.

As part of this roll-out, the State Government is upgrading infrastructure through a $1.68 billion co-investment with the early childhood sector to build and expand kinder-

This investment includes the delivery of a number of new kindergartens on existing school sites – as at Heritage College – to support the roll-out of the program, providing benefits through co-location of facilities and convenience for families.

Speaking on the day, Mr Maas said the opening of the upgraded early learning centre would make things more convenient for busy parents dropping off multiple children at school and kinder.

He said the upgraded space was a testament to the school’s vision.

“I am rapt, completely rapt, that the State Government has invested to allow this school’s vision to be completed.

“I congratulate the school on its vision, on making this all happen,” he said.

Assistant principal Emmanuel Merambeliotis said in offering a range of different pathways visual learners, hands-on learners and academic learners are all catered for.

“We recognise that we have a really diverse student cohort and they have diverse aspirations. We’ve got kids who want to do something in the medical field right through to a diesel mechanic,” he said.

“In order to accommodate for that what we try to do in the senior years is offer a full range of programs to engage those students.”

Mr Merambeliotis said Pakenham Secondary College offers VCE, VCAL, a range of VET subjects and school based apprenticeship programs like the one at Lime Cafe Cardinia.

“We really want to improve the educational opportunity and levels in the local community, having more students complete Year 12 or its equivalent,” he said.

“A high number of our students who complete Year 12 are the first in their family to do so. We see a responsibility to raise the aspirations and the opportunity for a lot of the kids in the local area.”

“Our students are more engaged in learning, it’s more real life content to the learning and there’s a bit more internal motivation because this relates to their chosen pathway,” Ms Barrie said. “What we’re really trying to do here is look at how we make our educational experience for our students here lead to an outcome or a pathway.

“We’re trying to look at supply and demand I suppose, we’re trying to be responsive to what we’re hearing employers and higher education is looking for and giving our students the opportunity to have a go at those sorts of skills before they leave school.”

The College wants students to succeed in all aspects of life, including their health and wellbeing. That’s why they allow students to be flexible in their studies and the programs are interchangeable so that students can find the right fit, perhaps by doing VCE and a VET certificate or by doing VCAL and a VCE subject.

Community spirit shines St Brigid’s Primary School in Officer will celebrate Catholic Education Week with a fun day for students on Friday, May 28.

A birthday to remember

By Gabriella Payne Every teenager dreams of having a memorable birthday party - but it might be hard to beat Kellia Ramsey-Reid’s 14th celebrations this year, as the community came together to make it a very special day indeed.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of dozens of community members, 14 year-old Kellia was showered in gifts and cards from total strangers in one of the “best birthday’s she’s ever had”, according to her Mum, Emma Ramsey.

After the family went through an incredibly tough time last year, Emma said that she couldn’t thank the public enough for all the kindness they showed her daughter, who is autistic and has been feeling really down lately.

Timber raid

By Gabriella Payne A family run timberyard in Officer, Van Steensel Timbers, was targeted by thieves in the early hours of Wednesday 26 May, ram raiding the shop front in a failed robbery attempt.

The glass doors on the timberyard’s main office were left shattered and crumpled inward after a vehicle rammed into them, but thanks to some solid steel bars inside - the thieves ran away empty handed.

bers said that the culprits had been caught on their CCTV cameras at about 3.20am and police were currently investigating the crime.

“It looks like they pulled out in front of the bus shelter, then reversed, hit it twice and then took off,” Sarina said.

Shaara said that the thieves appeared to have only attacked the front doors of the business and since the doors held solid after being rammed twice, it looks as though the robbers gave up and made a getaway.

“Police are looking into it now, they’ve got

information and our CCTV footage,” she said.

“Thankfully these doors are pretty strong, so we’re pretty lucky,” Sarina said.

Shaara said that while “people always try to break in here and there”, they had never experienced anything like this before. They discovered the damage when they came to open the store at about 6am, and said that thankfully, none of the expensive equipment and tools inside had been stolen.

Budget wins and losses

By Shelby Brooks The State Government is spending big on schools in the 2021/22 Victorian Budget, with a new primary school to be built in Officer and a multi-million dollar upgrade scheduled for Kooweerup Primary.

In the budget announcement Thursday 20 May, the State Government said they were allocating $492 million to build 13 new schools across the state, with Officer Rix Road Primary School (interim name) among those set to be open for the 2023 year.

Upgrades to Kooweerup Primary fall in the $340 million promise to upgrade 52 already existing schools.

Specifically, the $6.87 million investment will deliver a new competition-grade gymnasium, giving students a new space to play.

Kooweerup Primary School principal Ben Zimmerle said the funding was a long time coming.

“It is absolutely good news,” he said.

“It’s very exciting.”

The budget has also secured land in Clyde North for two future primary schools as well as a secondary school.

Across the state, the money being put in to create more and better schools is expected to support 3,500 jobs.

The budget has had a strong focus on mental health, which also merges across to the education system. $218 million will be allocated to a new School Mental Health Fund, which will support schools to implement mental health and wellbeing programs.

The Mental Health in Primary Schools pilot will also be expanded to include 90 government schools and ten non-government schools.

Another big win was for the proposed community hospital in Pakenham.

This year’s budget included $556 million to deliver on the commitment to build and expand 10 community hospitals, Pakenham, Phillip Island and Cranbourne included.

It is not additional funding, but instead the $556million has been made available to spend this year from the previously announced total project cost of $675million, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale explained.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale visited Kooweerup Primary School on Friday 21 May to celebrate the funding announcement.

“A site breakdown of costs isn’t yet available as planning and land acquisition processes are still underway for some of these hospitals, including for Pakenham, service planning is yet to be determined with the local health service/s and community,” she told the Gazette.

Ms Crugnale said the budget would support an average of 38,000 jobs every year over the next four years while investing in the care, services and infrastructure Bass needs.

“We are caring for our community and creating jobs by investing in future schools, funding the next stages of our community hospitals, supporting our student’s wellbeing and mental health with programs in schools, building a dedicated new emergency department for children at Casey Hospital, training and recruiting critical workforces and continuing our Free TAFE courses and so much

more,” Ms Crugnale said.

But Liberal Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the budget had failed to list the overdue Healesville-Kooweerup Road upgrade.

“Whilst Labor is happy to brag of their commitment for over two years in front of the cameras, they are still failing to commit to making the project a line item in their state budget,” he said.

“Labor believes changing the speed limit is enough of a safety upgrade but the community knows it isn’t.

“The lack of transparency on the funding for the project and its estimated completion is concerning.

“Following the loss of three lives on this road just this year you would have thought the State Government would ensure the project

was a top priority for this year’s budget. Not having the project as a line item could mean Labor has further plans on changing the funding model again, causing further delays for the project.”

Mr Battin also described the $351 million allocated for stage two of the Monash Freeway upgrade as a “blowout”.

“If the Andrews Labor Government didn’t dismiss and delay the project for so long the Victorian people would not have to pay an extra $351 million due to market escalations,” Mr Battin said. “$351 million could fund a number of important road projects missing from the government’s 21/22 state budget and the Government must come out and state if this cost blow out is the reason for the delays in Kooweerup Road upgrades.”

Heroes of the front line: Tribute mural in the works

By Shelby Brooks A new mural with an important message is slowly emerging on a drab wall in Pakenham’s main street.

Pakenham artist Leanne Hutchinson has been creating the artwork on the side of the Bendigo Bank building for a couple of weeks now, featuring Australia’s front line workers, like firefighters and nurses, who helped the community get through 2020.

“It’s a tribute to the front line workers and a way to brighten up the street,“ Leanne said.

She’s had lots of people stop and chat while she’s been working on the piece.

“I’ve just been doing it when I can,“ she said.

“I was feeling guilty that I wasn’t getting it done quickly enough.

“But I think I like that it is just slowly evolving. People come past excited to see the next stage of it. It’s more fun than painting it in one day and having it over with.“ Leanne received a Cardinia Shire grant for fund the project and the Bendigo Bank gave their encouragement to use their building.

A birthday to remember

By Gabriella Payne When Officer local Emma Ramsey posted a question in a Facebook community group earlier this month, asking total strangers if they would mind sending her daughter Kellia a few birthday cards to brighten up her 14th birthday, she never expected the amount of love they would receive.

In a short space of time, more than 200 people throughout the Pakenham area had reacted and replied to Ms Ramsey’s query, saying they would be more than happy to oblige - and in doing so, the community made it a day that both Kellia and Emma will never forget.

“I appreciate so much what these people have done to make her birthday the best day she’s ever had,” Ms Ramsey said.

“It’s the first proper party she’s ever had and it was just so amazing.”

14-year-old Kellia, who has autism and loves birthday cards, was over the moon to receive more than 65 birthday cards in the post - and was particularly in love with a musical card featuring singing kittens inside.

“I was excited, and I even got to open some of them before my birthday!” she said.

Kellia was delighted to receive so many beautiful birthday messages from the community. 238252 - and some even hand delivered cupcakes to their door.

“I wanted to say thank you to everyone who reached out and sent her all the cards, all the gifts, all the cakes - everything, someone even gave her $10!” Ms Ramsey said.

“I’m so grateful for everything people did, she loved it and she’s had a very big weekend!”

On top of that, some kind ladies in the community decided to go above and beyond to make Kellia’s birthday on Saturday 22 May even more special, by offering their help with a girls’ pamper party, doing Kellia and a few of her friends’ hair and makeup, and treating them with facemasks and footbaths too.

“It was just amazing,” Ms Ramsey said.

Having three children all with autism, Ms Ramsey said it was nice to make Kellia feel extra special for a day - something she truly deserved after a difficult year.

“She’s been a bit down lately,” Ms Ramsey explained.

“We’ve had a really rough 18 months with domestic violence and things like that, but things have settled now and a lot of stuff has been turned around and changed.

We’ve had to move house, and we were motel hopping for a while, so it’s been a hell of a 12-18 months but the kids are finally settled,” she said.

“We’ve been through so much, so I decided, it’s her birthday, she missed out on her 13th birthday because we didn’t know anyone and Covid was going on and we were stuck in motels, so I wanted to make her birthday as special as possible, and so I just reached out and people were just really nice and happy to send her cards.”

Ms Ramsey wanted to say a special thank you to Kellia’s support worker Kellie, who had helped her and her family through this tough time in their lives.

“Kellie helped organise Kellia’s party and she’s a huge support to us,” Mr Ramsey said.

“I’m just so appreciative of everything that people did to make Kellia’s day special.”

Time to close ‘Spoonville’

By Shelby Brooks A debate has erupted in Officer as to what to do with the spoon ‘village’ that was constructed last year as part of an art movement for children.

Kids decorated wooden spoons as people and stuck them in the ground in a communal ‘Spoonville’, providing some much needed colour and interest during the lockdown in August 2020.

But more than six months on, some say Spoonvilles are looking more like litter than art and should be demolished.

On the Grandvue Residents Group Facebook page, Nerissa Rae posted a photo of Spoonville asking, “Now that the Spoonville phase is over, are people supposed to come and maintain or collect their spoons? Or was it just a glorified littering exercise with no thought to our environment?”

Speaking to the Gazette, Nerissa said she wanted to raise awareness about the left over spoons across the shire.

“The whole thing was a ridiculous and wasteful exercise to me from the get go. So many other things that people could’ve done with their children while out walking,” she said.

“My kids are very keen to clean them up as they are sad at the thought of wildlife with googly eyes and pipecleaners stuck in their stomachs.”

Officer local Cristina Baccino agreed, telling the Gazette the materials used to decorate the spoons, such as ribbons, wool, glitter and feathers could be causing a negative environmental impact.

“Unfortunately, it’s exactly those types of materials that are harmful to birds and mammals,” she said.

Cardinia Shire Council active communities manager Kristen Jackson said residents could

contact the shire to have a Spoonville cleaned up.

“After many months living under COVID-19 restrictions, small community initiatives such as Spoonville encouraged children to venture outside and away from screens to enjoy our green spaces and indulge in imaginative play,” she said.

“Spoonvilles won’t have an impact on our environment or native species in the short term. However, they do have a limited lifespan, and the sites are monitored by Council.

“Where necessary, the council will tidy up these spaces to ensure our parks and gardens remain user friendly for humans and animals.

“If residents do see a Spoonville area that looks well beyond its expiry date, we encourage them to contact us on 1300 787 624 or email mail@cardinia.vic.gov.au. “ But not everyone is ready to see Spoonville shuttered.

“A lot of children and even adults put some effort into their spoons,” Kelly Ann said.

“They probably still enjoy walking past them looking at them. Just because one thinks the phase is over doesn’t mean it is to everyone. Just leave them be. All I see is an overgrown section with dry bark. Not spoons that are all over the place.”

Tamara Braithwaite agreed.

“We were in the middle of a global pandemic, whatever it takes to give the kids a joy was worth it I think, there wasn’t much other joy going on their lives, I know my kids enjoyed checking out all the local spoons on their daily rides,” she said.

Angelo Giuffrida thought it was a non-issue.

“I only see a handful of plastic spoons there, the rest are organic material and will disintegrate and recycle themselves after a few decades (i.e. they’re not posing an issue to the environment). Hardly something to mount an inquisition over,” he said.

On track at Toomuc Construction is well underway on the $6.3 million project to upgrade Toomuc Recreation Reserve in Pakenham.

The project began in March and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The northern pavilion will see the ground floor extended to include change rooms for both football and cricket clubs as well as separate facilities for the netball club.

The upgrades will also include a renovated canteen, new first aid room, extra storage and a balcony extension on the upper level.

The southern pavilion will be extended which will include accessible amenities and change rooms, public toilets, a first aid room and an upgraded kitchen to the existing pavilion.

The baseball pavilion will include accessible toilets, a canteen, change rooms, new umpire rooms and accessible ramps and paths, while the little athletics building upgrade is set to involve the refurbishment of the kitchen.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Brett Owen visited the site on Thursday 20 May with La Trobe MP Jason Wood.

“We saw that the demolition of the netball rooms, canteen and gym is now complete and the remaining demolition of the bottom floor of the northern pavilion will soon be underway,” Cr Owen said.

“The site cut of the southern pavilion extension and new baseball pavilion has also been completed with these building works expected to begin shortly.”

Toomuc Ward Councillor Stephanie Davies said the upgrades would cater to the growing needs of sporting groups and enhance accessibility for the large number of families who use the reserve.

“This is an exciting project and another example of what can be achieved when federal, state and local government collaborate and

them the amenities they need and deserve,” he said.

“I fought tooth and nail to secure $4.75 million in Federal funding and as I always say, promises made, promises delivered.”

State member for Bass Jordan Crugnale praised the works at Toomuc Recreation Reserve.

“Wonderful to see the works progressing well with these wonderful, inclusive familyfriendly clubs at the centre of everything we do.”

The Australian Government contributed $4.75 million towards the project, Cardinia Shire Council $1.5 million and the Victorian Government $50,000.

CWA gets a taste for art The ladies of the Pakenham CWA have been busy sewing, knitting and stitching a wearable art design for the upcoming Art Show Pakenham.

The group’s entry into the Wearable Art Parade is themed ‘Our interpretation of the Australian bush’ and features wool kookaburras, bees, caterpillars, wattle and leaves on a shawl and beret.

The garment will be worn by Gazette journalist Shelby Brooks at the opening night of the art show at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday 28 May. Pakenham CWA craft leader Hazel Green said every member contributed in their own way.

“Different people have different skills but nearly all of us put in some way,” she said.

The CWA branch aren’t looking to win the parade, which has 12 entries from artists and designers around the district, but hopes it will help attract new members to the group.

“We just wanted to put our name out there and make people aware of what we do,” president Heather Kleesh said.

“The CWA is about empowering women to do things, a way of forming new friendships, learn new skills and support and connect with the community.”

The Pakenham CWA supports two local high school students with a three year scholarship program.

But the CWA is not just for the more mature woman, younger women are encouraged to join and bring new ideas to the club, Heather said.

Recently, the remaining four ladies of the CWA branch Emerald amalgamated with the Pakenham group to bring the group number up to 16. The CWA Pakenham Branch meets the first Wednesday of each month for a committee meeting and every third Wednesday for a craft session and is always looking for new members.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Dementia support in cafe

By Gabriella Payne Dementia is a difficult illness that takes a toll on both the sufferer and their loved ones, but a new cafe-style support program held at the Outlook Community Centre is hoping to lift some of that burden and connect people facing the same situation in an understanding social setting.

The ‘Forget Me Not Cafe’ will provide those living with dementia and their carers, family and friends with an opportunity to share stories and experiences over morning tea together, and find support and information to help them on their journey.

Having recently held two free trial sessions in the past few months, the team at the Outlook Community Centre are looking forward to commencing the full program on Tuesday 1 June - and everyone is welcome to come along.

The Community Centre manager, Alison Ryan, said that she and her team hoped that this cafe style program would help connect community members and provide a safe, welcoming space for them to learn more about

“The aim is to provide a friendly and relaxing social environment for people living with

the challenges of dementia to meet others going through the same journey,” Ms Ryan said.

“It will allow the sharing of knowledge, tips and strategies, and there will also be entertain-

ment and refreshments provided.”

My Ryan said that it is “well known that socialising is an important way to feel connected” and she hoped that the cafe would lift some of the burden off those experiencing the effects of this disease.

“The cafe is also a great way to find out about the services and supports that are available in the area,” she said.

The whole team at Outlook hope that everyone who comes along to the cafe will share positive experiences and form some friendships over a nice cup of tea or coffee.

The sessions are set to be held monthly, however there will be two meet ups this coming month, the first on Tuesday 1 June and the second on Tuesday 22 June, both from 10am 12pm.

Back in the driver’s SEATS: Advocacy support for roads

By Shelby Brooks Cardinia Shire Council has rejoined a leading advocating transport group in a bid to receive government support for major road developments.

By becoming a member of the South Eastern Australia Transport Strategy (SEATS), the organisation will advocate for state and federal government support for projects such as the south east airport, South Gippsland Highway and Princes Highway upgrades,

electric vehicle charging networks and active transport like rail, bike and walking trails.

The shire pulled out of SEATS in 2011 after becoming frustrated the organisation wasn’t helping the area, councillor Collin Ross said.

“I feel we’re in a different position now,” Cr Ross said.

“Our population has increased substantially and we have major need for expansion on roads and advocacy in these areas.

“The amount of urgent need we have on

our roads is something that council can’t afford to spend all our money on but if we get government support on this it would be huge.”

Councillor Graeme Moore said the $7280 annual membership fee was reasonable for the potential payoff.

“This group will assist our ever increasing carnage on our roads… I think the annual fee is pretty reasonable and is already able to be absorbed in our budgets,” Mr Moore said.

However, the lack of intention to look into

the roads surrounding the Lang Lang sand mines was concerning, Cr Ross said.

“We were always looking for more money to go towards the projects in that area that we’ve had outstanding for the last 12 years,” Cr Ross said.

“Those sandpits provide so much for Melbourne’s construction sand, those roads have gotten busier and busier and we just need a bit more government support to actually put them in place and lighten the load of the people down there.”

Feeling the park’s beauty

By Danielle Kutchel Members of the blind and low vision community visited Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick to enjoy its autumn beauty.

On Friday 21 May, the group gathered for a walk organised by Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria.

The weather was perfect, with the late autumn sun warming the way.

They followed the sealed paths around the park, pausing at various plants and trees to feel and smell their boughs, bark, leaves and flowers.

Through this, members of the group were able to ‘see’ their surroundings.

A favourite was a soft lamb’s-ear plant.

Lit up soon

By Danielle Kutchel New traffic lights in Beaconsfield are expected to be turned on within weeks.

Works at the intersection of Glismann Road, Beaconsfield Avenue and the Princes Highway are now complete, with traffic lights in place.

“The signals are expected to be activated in June, following final electrical works by the electricity provider,” Cardinia Council’s general manager infrastructure and environment, Peter Benazic, said.

Since December 2020, works have taken place to upgrade street lighting in the area, widen the pavement on the highway, create a new left-turn slip lane into Beaconsfield Avenue and an extended right turn lane into Beaconsfield Avenue as well as dual right-turn lanes out of Beaconsfield Avenue.

Glismann Road has been extended to the intersection, Mr Benazic said, and pavement resurfacing, landscaping works and upgrades to underground drains have been undertaken.

The intersection now features signalised bicycle crossings.

“The intersection upgrade is one of several in Council’s Better Local Roads – Princes Highway Intersections Program funded by Council and the Australian Government’s Urban Congestion Fund,” Mr Benazic said.

“Works will increase safety and comfort for all road-users and cater for increasing traffic volumes.”

Recycling with wheels on

By Shelby Brooks Two kilometres of roadway in Berwick is being constructed using recycled materials, diverting approximately 1,356,000 plastic bags from landfill.

The project, currently underway in the Stockland Minta estate, will be Australia’s largest environmentally friendly road project using surfacing material made from Reconophalt.

The material will also divert approximately 39,610 printer cartridges and 724 tonnes of recycled asphalt – saving the equivalent of 23.08 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 9.5 cars coming off the road for one year.

The Minta Reconophalt project is a combination of work between Stockland, City of Casey Council, Downer Road Services and Winslow Constructors Australia.

Upon completion, and combined with two other recycled road projects in the es-

tate, the total length of road will be 2,430 metres and the total area of pavement will be 17,800 square metres.

Downer Road Service group manager Karen Winsbury said there had never been a greater need to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill with soft plastic, tyres, glass and excavation waste being major issues globally.

“We needed to minimise the extraction of natural resources for use in this much needed infrastructure development - that’s why Downer has invested heavily over the past 10 years to create economic, social and environmental benefit for our customers and their communities by pulling products, not pushing waste.

The project at Stockland Minta is a great example of forward-thinking, large scale projects that use these materials,” Ms Winsbury said.

Four ‘burglars’ nabbed Four teens have been arrested by police over an alleged burglary and evasion of police.

The males stole power tools from a closed retail store on Princes Highway, Dandenong South just after 10pm on Thursday 20 May, police say.

They drove off in an allegedly stolen red Toyota, which was spotted by police patrolling in Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills.

Police say the Toyota was being driven on the rim of one of its rear wheels, due to a blown tyre.

A male allegedly helped the group attempt to change vehicles.

Taking the fight to cancer

By Danielle Kutchel Four women from across Casey and Cardinia are flexing their fighting muscles and telling cancer where to go.

Terrie, her daughter Katelyn, and close friends Kelly and Renae have banded together to organise the ‘Show us your Fight…Stop Cancer’ fundraiser.

The event aims to draw attention to all cancers – whether they affect men or women – and raise funds for the Cancer Council.

Their goal is simple: to stop cancer.

The event was borne of Terrie’s personal experiences with the disease.

She said she’s hit the cancer jackpot: at the age of 20, she was diagnosed with skin cancer. In February 2019, she was diagnosed with stage 2 cervical cancer and in September 2019, with stage 3-4 bowel cancer.

Through it all, Katelyn, Kelly and Renae have been by her side, supporting her in her fight against the awful disease.

Terrie also has a mutant gene in her family that means she is at a higher risk of breast cancer.

“I have it, so does my daughter and so does my sister. My mum and aunty both passed away from the gene – from the cancer,” she explained.

A single mum of a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old, Terrie said her family has been through hell and back during her illnesses.

After learning of the mutant gene in her DNA, Terrie knew there was a possibility she would have breast cancer as well and went to get some tests done.

When she told her family of the possibility, Katelyn decided they wouldn’t go down without a fight – and the idea of the fundraiser sprung to life.

“Being told you’ve got cancer is one of the worst things in the world, but it’s worse to tell

“What they don’t tell you is the financial strain on families is astronomical; I finished chemo and a week later we went into lockdown, so we haven’t recovered fully financially.”

Nevertheless, Terrie is optimistic about the turns her life has taken.

“I’m alive and get to spend more time with my family,” she said.

Through the fundraiser, the friends want to spread the word to people to get tested as early as possible, to increase their chances of survival.

“If you show your bits to your doctor it can save your life,” Terrie said with a laugh.

“Cancer is cancer; it doesn’t matter whether you’re female or male, young or old, it doesn’t discriminate. It’s not age friendly or gender specific.”

For her part, Terrie has been through chemotherapy, a hysterectomy and a “big-arse surgery”.

She’s had all of her large bowel removed as well as part of her stomach and small bowel, and now has numbness down her left side.

Thanks to her faulty gene, the possibility of further treatments including a mastectomy is on the horizon, to ward off breast cancer.

“With the gene, it’s only a matter of time. I would rather be here for my grandkids. I’m 44, I’m not going to let cancer get me,” she said.

The fundraiser will be held on Friday 23 July

Bookworms’ shared space

By Danielle Kutchel Imagine having an astronaut read a story to you!

That’s exactly what happened on Wednesday 19 May for National Simultaneous Storytime, when kids at Bunjil Place Library joined with millions of people right across the country in listening to a real-life spaceman read a story.

Philip Bunting zoomed in to libraries around Australia from the International Space Station and read ‘Give Me Some Space’ to scores of delighted bookworms.

National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Now in its 21st successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

CEO of Casey Cardinia Libraries, Chris Buckingham, said National Simultaneous Storytime celebrates reading and encourages people to “pick up a book and share it with others”.

“This year’s event really was one out of the box, how cool was it to have a storytime read from space?” he said.

“Casey Cardinia Libraries were delighted to have been part of a national initiative that had millions of Australians reading right across the country.”

How to be a journalist Two Star News Group journalists visited a classroom of excited and curious third graders last week to discuss all things journalism and hopefully inspire the next generation of news reporters.

Shelby Brooks and Danielle Kutchel visited Lakeside College on Friday 21 May, bringing with them a slideshow of photos of their time in and out of the office, a video of a printing press and ideas of how they source news.

The visit was organised by Lakeside College teacher Leah Kelly who said it kicked off the beginning of a deep dive into news reporting.

“We have a unit based on climate and weather and we wanted to intersect that with literacy,” Ms Kelly said.

“The kids are going to have a go using a green screen to share a news report based on what they’re learning about climate.”

Long time photographer Stewart Chambers was the clear favourite guest, fielding questions from the students such as, “How many photos do you take a day? A gazillion? Have you ever photographed Jennifer Lopez? And what is your favourite thing to take photos of?”.

Shelby and Danielle brought with them a worksheet about the real life story of Molly the cow’s birthday party for the kids to have a go at turning into a news article and helped the students learn about by-lines, quotes, introductions and headlines.

“The kids absolutely loved the visit,” Ms Kelly said.

“The energy was awesome and the level of engagement and the take away was really really good.

“I think you’ve inspired some to get into journalism or photography.”

The next step for the students is to head out to the community and find out what might be some news worthy issues for locals.

They’ll be heading to the Cardinia Cultural Centre, pharmacy, Coles and kindergarten to ask questions of the workers.

Why should people join the choir?

Because it’s heaps of fun, the people are lovely and it’s GREAT for your health and wellbeing!

What do you love about your role there?

The joy of seeing people’s confidence bloom as they become familiar with the music. The wonderful teamwork that appears within the group as they sing together and the gift of being able to share my love of music with my singers and the audience. It’s also pretty cool to play with the sound of the group to achieve the beautiful music I envision and to see the excitement and pride on the singers’ faces when they nail something!

What event would you like to witness and why?

I can’t think of a particular event but I do know I love reuniting with people I haven’t seen for ages. There’s just something special about the anticipation and then that first hug and the joy that comes with hanging out with someone you love and value.

What is your secret talent or party trick?

Being able to bend my little fingers to touch where they connect to my palm whilst keeping my other fingers straight. Completely useless

What six guests would you invite to a dinner party?

My siblings and my parents. We live so far apart our chances to hang out together are few and far between.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Getting stuck at the top of a tow rope as a 10-year-old novice skier and creating a HUGE traffic jam. I had to get lifted out by a ski instructor. The worst part was I wasn’t even travelling on the tow at the time but had come from the opposite direction!

Who is your biggest inspiration?

Whether it’s the beauty, steadiness and resilience of Mother Nature, a spark of colourful creativity or seeing people who have achieved their goals against all odds, inspiration comes in many forms for me.

What would be the top three songs on your desert island playlist?

This is my nightmare question!! I love SO many different types of music and songs that I find this impossible to narrow down... Let’s just say I’ll need some serious storage space on my device and an endless supply of batteries to keep it playing.

Presentation can be the make or break of a vegetable being consumed by kids. Try making funny faces out of your ingredients or cut them into interesting shapes with cookie cutters to make the experience more exciting.

Howell sets the bar high

By Tyler Lewis Jack Howell is on a path to the ultimate success under the world’s brightest lights.

That path leads to the Paris Paralympics, 2024.

Howell – a student from Kambrya College in Berwick – is a para athlete booming in ablebodied triathlons, with the dream of reaching the Paralympics.

The 17-year-old was born with a congenital amputation of his left hand from the wrist.

In the last year, Covid has prevented athletes from competing frequently and improving the rank in which they are selected to compete in the Paralympic Games.

As being just (aged) 17, and with the year that was in 2020, Howell is yet to compete internationally and begin receiving his world ranking.

But with the Tokyo games sitting on a knife’s edge, Australian athletes have been racing against each other in preparation.

As Howell is recognised as an Elite Emerging Athlete by the Australian Institute of Sport and Triathlon Australia, he was invited to the National Para Triathlon preparation race at Stockton beach in Newcastle last week.

His performance was beyond promising, coming in second place, to Tokyo bound athlete David Bryant – who holds a fifth-placed world ranking.

After having a nice lead after the swimming leg, Howell was caught by Bryant on the bike.

And while he is proud of how he went he still feels there is room for improvement.

“I am very happy that I was competitive in this race against elite athletes that are older and have a lot more experience than me,” he said.

“I still have growth and development to

“As a triathlete I always have a particular leg that needs more work and a leg that is looking good.

“This (particular leg) changes all the time;

at the moment I would like to improve my cycling skills.

“David Bryant was able to take the lead from me in the bike leg gaining almost two minutes, I would like to change that for next time,” Howell said.

As someone who has never given up on his

dream, Howell – quietly known as a smiling assassin – inspires many, he reflected on that and – in contrary – who inspires him.

“I often race in mainstream, able body races; I hope that this inspires others to have a go at sports and be the best they can be,” he said.

“To not feel that they are limited by disability or any other factors. I am interested in becoming a sports teacher and hope to one day inspire my students to enjoy sports, try a variety of sports, find what they like and have fun.

“I am inspired by other athletes enjoying their sport, making the most of their opportunities, having fun and not taking everything too seriously all the time.”

A humble young man, Howell has his eyes firmly set on his dreams, and will be keeping tabs on the way the Paralympics is structured and how he can then focus on what he does best when he is to reach Paris.

“I will be glued to the couch watching the Tokyo Paralympic games,” he said.

“I can’t wait to cheer on the Aussies in all sports, but I will be especially watching the triathlon, swimming, cycling and running.

“Para-triathlon at such a high level has a lot of technical requirements that I am still learning, so I will be watching the transitions and some of the strategies to see how it’s done at the highest level.

“To represent Australia at a Paralympics is my ultimate goal.

“It is the pinnacle of sporting competition for para-athletes and I hope one day I get this experience.

“To podium at a Paralympics would be an unbelievable experience, the stuff of dreams.”

Jack is also a Variety Heart Scholarship recipient, and has been supported by the Dylan Alcott Foundation, this foundation has assisted him in purchasing a new bike.

The bids go up as Natalia skates her way to stardom

By David Nagel It’s hard to imagine now that Natalia Walter was so shy at her first Artistic Roller-Skating national championships that she had to be lured to the floor with a $20 note.

But it is worth noting…she was only eight years old at the time!

The now 13-year-old from Endeavour Hills has since blossomed into a confident and experienced star, dominating both the Victorian and National scene in the demanding disciplines of Dance and Figure Skating.

Natalia, who trains four nights a week at the Caribbean Rollerama in Scoresby, was introduced to the sport by her mum Rachel, an artistic skater herself who remembers that first national experience as if it was only yesterday.

“It was at the nationals in South Australia in a big stadium, with all the fold back seats, and Natalia was so shy that she refused to go onto the floor,” Rachel said.

“Her coach Jennie (Bedwell) offered her $10, but Natalia said it’s worth more than that, I want $20.

“Jennie agreed, and since then she has grown into a confident young lady who takes everything in her stride.

“It’s now a strength of hers that she handles herself so well where others get themselves worked up to the point of being sick.

“We’ve always told her to just go out and have fun, and we’re very proud of what she has achieved.”

What Natalia has achieved is quite remarkable really as she remains undefeated in all Victorian championships and has won four Australian championships in the figure discipline.

Across all competitions she has a total of 34 gold medals, 14 silver and six bronze across all forms of figures, dance and freestyle, as well as a number of trophies including Overall Victorian Champion.

But for Natalia, her love of the sport is what keeps her coming back for more.

“I don’t get nervous that much, but I do have silly thoughts like ‘don’t muck up’ and ‘don’t fall’ just before we start.”

Natalia recently won the Victorian championships again, which qualified her for the 2021 Nationals, which this year take place at the Gloria Pyke Netball Stadium in Dandenong in late September.

It provides something of a home-floor advantage for Natalia, who has travelled to Queensland, South Australia and Western

Australia for previous championships.

Her goal now is to do well at nationals and qualify for the Oceania Championships.

Her happy and relaxed demeanour quickly gets overtaken by a steely determination to achieve her goals.

“I want to go to the Oceania’s and represent Australia so bad,” Natalia said.

“I think you have to be 14 to be able to compete, but first I need to qualify and I can only do that by doing well at nationals.” Natalia is a grounded young lady who appreciates the support she has behind the scenes.

By David Nagel Pakenham has continued its bright start to the AFL Outer East Premier Division season with a hard-fought 12.16 (88) to 11.14 (80) victory over Doveton at Robinson Reserve.

The Lions and Doves hadn’t met since the 2019 division one grand final when Pakenham went down narrowly.

The Lions had to overcome some adversity to get across the line with Dermott Yawney suffering a broken arm and Kane Tyrrell a dislocated right knee – all in the space of a fiveminute period in the second quarter.

The Lions led by 14 points at half time but Doveton came back to lead by four points at the final break.

But the Lions pinched one of the more impressive wins of the season, kicking five goals to three in the last term to walk away victory and remain in fourth place on the ladder.

Pakenham coach Ash Green was impressed with his team’s fighting qualities after the setbacks in the second term.

“We just said to the guys: ‘it’s a challenge, you’ll face these sorts of challenges, not only in football but life in general,” Green said.

“We had to dig deep for their two mates that weren’t there, and I thought they were fantastic.”

Josh Tynan kicked four goals for the Lions, and Cam Debruin three, while Jordy Stewart and Tom Gamble were effective around the ground.

The Lions will have their work cut out this week, with an extensive injury list and a hungry opponent in fifth-placed Olinda Ferny Creek.

Officer had a monstrous win in division

The Roos won by almost 200 points last week and have moved to fourth on the ladder and boosted their percentage to over 240.

Jesse Longmuir kicked another seven, which makes it 17 in just two weeks, while Brent Moloney kicked five for the second week in a row. The Roos kicked 12.6 to a scoreless Pies unit in the final stanza.

The Roos will be tested in their next three encounters – all away games – against Emerald, Gembrook Cockatoo and Seville.

And it might be time to reassess Nar Nar Goon’s building reputation as the giant-killers of West Gippsland football after the Goon scored a thrilling 13-point victory – 15.10 (100) to 11.21 (87) - over Tooradin-Dalmore in an absorbing contest at Westernport Oval on Saturday.

safely tucked away in the bank.

Win this week against Inverloch-Kongwak and it will be impossible to ignore the credentials of the Goon…who will transform from giant-killers to a legitimate creature of force.

The Goon had control of the contest in the first half but looked gone after the Seagulls fought back and led by 13 points with 10 minutes left on the clock.

But enter Troy McDermott, who kicked three late goals to give the Goon their fifthconsecutive win that sees them move to third place on the ladder.

Cougars’ startling in a magnificent month of May

By David Nagel Pakenham’s magical month of May has continued with the Cougars scoring an injurytime winner to down Knox 1-0 at Park Ridge Reserve on Saturday.

It took a late strike from Zain Ahmad – in the 92nd minute – to give the Cougars the lead and a crucial victory that sees them move to outright third on the table.

The Cougars have now won four games straight, with victories over Mentone, Mt Martha, Rosebud and now Knox.

The Cougars now sit on 18 points, just four behind ladder leaders Hampton Park and Mentone and four clear of fourth-placed Rosebud.

Pakenham’s victory was a far cry from its most recent outings where it scored seven goals in the two weeks leading into this contest. This was more a grinding victory built on a solid team defence and a core group that is refusing to concede easy goals Since losing to Hampton Park in round five the Cougars have conceded just one goal,

Keeper Josh Green has been superb in goals, with this the Cougars fifth clean sheet of the season, while players like Dallas McNeill, Chris Beasley, Vincent Makota and Al-

bert Mambo have been performing their jobs well.

Ed Trakosevic, Cameron Sayce, Micah McGill and Manny Christopher are others that are playing a key role in the Cougars great recent run of form.

The Cougars have an ideal opportunity to make it five wins on the trot when they host third-from-last South East at IYU Reserve this Saturday. The game kicks off at 3pm.

Bunyip has failed to take advantage of an early red-card for Rosebud, going down 2-1 to the Buds at Bunyip on Saturday.

Stef Papaluca was given his marching orders by the referee in the ninth minute, giving the Strikers every opportunity to control the run of play.

But it was Doug Cunnison who put the visitors in front in first-half injury time, converting a penalty with the last kick before the break.

The Strikers fought back with a 77thminute equaliser from Liam Lenders, but the comeback was to prove in vain when Craig Parry put Rosebud back in front just six minutes later.

The Strikers had their chances in the dying stages but just fell short to lose their second-consecutive game by the 2-1 scoreline.

The Strikers, who now sit in seventh position on 11 points, will look to get things back on track when they travel to eighth-placed Casey Panthers this week in a crucial game for both clubs.

Warriors bounce back in the style of a real contender

By David Nagel The Pakenham Warriors Big V Division One women’s team has bounced back to the winners list in impressive style with a 63-51 victory over Camberwell at Cardinia Life.

The Warriors – who were disappointing in a 17-point loss to Craigieburn last week – were in full control from start to finish, building their lead over the first three quarters before cruising to the finish line.

The Warriors now have a 7-3 record and sit third on the competition table after their fifth win from their last six outings.

The Warriors had a steady contribution across the floor, with Sarah Slater the most impressive player on the court with her 12 points complemented by 10 rebounds. Slater’s ‘double-double’ was highlighted by six perfect attempts from the stripe.

The Warriors – coming off great wins over Whittlesea and Sunbury – fell behind in the early stages and could never quite get back into the contest.

Dylan Jenkinson was outstanding with 25 points, as was Lauchlan Mark with 24, Josh Norton imposed himself on the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds, at including eight defensive boards.

The Warriors just shot themselves in the foot with inaccurate finishing, with no player going at better than 47-per cent efficiency.

The Warriors – in fourth place - will look to bounce back when they travel to Bellarine this Saturday to take on the fifth-placed Storm.

And Pakenham’s Youth League Two women’s team remains in touch with the top teams in the competition after an impressive 85-60 victory over Mornington.

The Warriors led by seven at the first break before powering away with a 26-11 second period. Scores were relatively even in the second half – but the damage had been done.

Alahna Arnason produced an 18-point, 10-rebound, double-double, while Tyla Scorah (16 points), Stacie Myers (12 points) and Louise Karajic-Powell (10) kept the scorers busy… particularly in the second stanza.

The Warriors, in fourth, should consolidate their lofty ranking when the host the winless Chelsea at Cardinia Life on Saturday night.
