Emerald Secondary College is at the centre of political controversy once again, with the government and opposition failing to see eyeto-eye on funding allocations for campus upgrades announced in the state budget.

The news angered Gembrook MP Brad Battin who claims the school has been shortchanged $4.8 million dollars.

1. What is something people don’t know about you?

I am also an American citizen, thank you Dad! 2. What is the best thing about being involved at the Coonara Community House?

I’ve been connected with Coonara since I was young, being involved in the ‘girls together’ project which focused on body positivity for young women. The house itself is just gorgeous, being converted from a stone household. Being with Coonara has shown me the true value of community and connection.

3. What was it like winning the short film competition at the Warburton Film Festival in 2015?

I must say that I was surprised, and completely honoured. I created a stop motion film which accompanied a poem by Canadian poet Shane Koyczan, who gave me permission to use his poem. His message was so powerful, I really credit him for his inspiration. I actually had the pleasure of meeting him when he performed at the forum in 2016.

4. What is your favourite movie?

Back to the Future... or anything by Quentin Tarantino.

5. What is your favourite show on TV? I was raised watching the Simpsons, it will always have a special spot in my heart. An honourable mention goes to Bob’s Burgers.

6. At school I......

Indulged in art subjects like media and visual communication, yet surprisingly didn’t do English literature, which is funny considering how much I love analysing books.

7. Favourite holiday spot in Australia?

Port Douglas up in Queensland is incred-

ibly beautiful. However, I feel incredibly spoiled growing up so close to the Dandenong Ranges. Nothing beats the mountains.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.

I was very lucky and honoured to see Paul McCartney in 2017.

Share your talents. Every one of us has been blessed with different abilities, talents and capabilities. Why not share them with others? Whether that’s by mentoring someone in your field of work, by teaching someone to sew or paint, or by creating online content for volunteer organisations.

Visit a resident at an aged care centre. Volunteers are often a source of entertainment and learning for people in care. You could teach a class, read a book, or just share tea, biscuits and stories. Volunteer opportunities for those interested in visiting older people living in care centres, or at home, are often advertised online.

Help the homeless. There are plenty of ways you can help those in need. Donating warm clothes, blankets, food, and sanitary items to a homeless shelter takes very little time but can dramatically improve someone’s every day.

Reach out to the shelters and support services near you, and ask how you can help.

Hospital windfall

By Mikayla Van Loon, Taylah Eastwell and Jed Lanyon A new adult emergency department and a pediatric zone at Maroondah Hospital have been promised by the state government in its 2021/22 budget.

The $100 million investment will be shared by five hospitals across metropolitan Melbourne and create 300 jobs.

The budget also included $99 million to expand the Angliss Hospital with a new in-patient unit. The project will support around 220 jobs at the peak of construction.

A futher $5.7 million was allocated for the business case and initial planning for a new adult emergency department at the Ringwood East hospital.

Another area of focus was strengthening the justice system, providing more support for victims, especially family violence victims and preventing Aboriginal deaths in custody. To help achieve these aims, a new family violence centre will be established in Ringwood to service the Outer East as part of the $78 million package for specialist family violence courts.

The local government area of Maroondah will also share in $47 million aimed at helping those sleeping rough get into secure housing, which may help ease increasing homelessness in the Lilydale area.

Health Mental health received a lot of budget attention as funding will continue for the Live 4 Life and Be Well in the Ranges programs. These are bespoke regional mental health programs that work closely with young people and those affected by bushfires.

Ambulance Victoria and paramedics were also high on the priority list to provide better support to patients. The budged included $759 million to employ more paramedics, as well as more triage care and support staff for Ambulance Victoria to reduce the pressure in emergency departments. $842 million in funding will deliver 3000 jobs, training and placements in the mental health sector.

Infrastructure Gembrook will soon be home to an all-new school after $491.57 million was announced towards construction. The school, temporarily known as Officer Rix Road Primary School, is expected to open in 2023.

In Mount Evelyn, upgrades to road safety along York Road between Swansea and Monbulk Roads will also take place in an attempt to ensure roads meet ongoing traffic needs as the electorate of Evelyn continues to grow.

The budget also allocates $74.3 million towards improving bus services across the state, including Lilydale, Yarra Glen and Healesville

to increase services on routes.

Mooroolbark’s Manchester Primary School will also receive upgrades to classrooms and school buildings.

The Big Build project has received more funding to improve Victorian roads and railway lines, helping ease congestion across the state.

Unfortunately, the much needed duplication of the Lilydale line was overlooked for funding.

Environment $44 million has been allocated towards protecting Victorian waterways and ensuring they are both preserved and enjoyed by communities. However, no mention was made of the Yarra River.

The budget announcement also revealed the largest funding package to date for Forest, Fire and Regions, with over $517 million going towards reducing bushfire risk. $15.6 million was also allocated towards removing long grass and flammable undergrowth.

The state has also placed a focus on indigenous cultural burning as a means of bushfire prevention, putting $22.5 million towards the initiative.

Producers of the Yarra Valley will benefit from $6.4 million invested in a Victorian Fruit Fly Strategy set to be released next month in a bid to combat Queensland Fruit Fly outbreaks.

Basketball upgrades bounce along

By Taylah Eastwell An exciting upgrade to Kallista Primary School’s basketball area is now in its second stage, with an architect recently appointed to design the new facilities.

Monbulk MP and Minister for Education James Merlino visited the school on Friday 20 May where he announced that Spaces Pty Ltd would design the works which will see the basketball area completely refurbished with new surfaces and a cover.

The state government have provided $496,125 to go towards the project from the Minor Capital Works fund in hopes it will improve learning environments as well as the character and condition of the school.

Kallista Primary School principal Christine Finighan said the space will include a “beautiful, huge court space”.

“We are going to have a proper waterproof cover put over so it will be a great area for children to play as well as an all-weather area,” Ms Finighan said.

“We will have two new fully refurbished basketball courts with proper turf which will be beautiful for kids to run and play on, and we are also getting a handball court. It’s going to be a fantastic recreation asset.

“It will also allow us to have community movies and Christmas concerts down there so the Kallista community can also use it.

Mr Merlino said “every student should

have a great school, no matter where they live”.

“We’re making sure that our schools have the best facilities, our classrooms have the best teachers and that every child is given every chance to succeed,” he said.

A split second decision has turned into a costly lesson for a Ferntree Gully woman.

The woman was ordered to pay hundreds of dollars after dropping a lit cigarette from a car in Boronia Village car park.

A member of the public reported the woman to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), who charged the woman and issued a summons to face Ringwood Magistrates Court.

The magistrate placed the woman on a good behaviour bond and ordered her to pay $753 in legal costs to the EPA. The woman is the third person to pay hundreds of dollars over dropped cigarette butts in the past two months, with a Wantirna man also ordered to pay $1,000 recently for dropping a cigarette beside a road in Scoresby.

The EPA said it received “20,000 reports of littering each year“ and works closely with government, industry and the community to use intelligence and surveillance to target offenders.

Funding feud at college From page 1 “Funding for all infrastructure projects are provided over multiple years as construction progresses. Funding is provided as it is needed,“ Mr Merlino said.

“In failing to understand this normal and basic approach to delivering projects, it is no wonder he failed in his Liberal Party leadership coup.“ Mr Battin accused the government of failing to release a full state budget in 2020-21, leaving out detail on essential capital works.

The “enormous funding shortfall and delays in the completion of works for Emerald Secondary College is probably why the Labor Government refused to release their full budget papers last year as they did not want to reveal how shallow their announcement was to the Emerald community,” Mr Battin said.

“It is disappointing the project has been held hostage until the next election.“ The school has long been caught in a political crossfire, with Mr Battin believing the school has missed out on essential funding for far too long.

“I support the work getting underway, but it is a shame the Labor party have taken so long to realise Emerald students deserve equal to the rest of Victoria,” Mr Battin said when upgrades first began.

“Students in year 12 in 2021 have missed out on new upgrades at Emerald since the Labor Government cut the commitment made by the Liberal Party in 2014. They put politics ahead of students in Emerald and this year’s VCE class missed out,“ Mr Battin said.

The state government claims it has now invested more than $7.5 million to upgrade Emerald Secondary College, including $1.5 million in the 2015-16 Victorian budget and a further $500,000 in the 2017-18 Planned Maintenance Program.

Helping do it for the kids

By Mikayla van Loon Getting recognised for his 13 years of volunteering with Camp Quality was not something David Clingin ever thought would happen.

But as this year’s Camp Quality Gillard Award recipient for Victoria, the Mount Evelyn man has been acknowledged for his excellence in volunteering.

“It was completely unexpected because you don’t do it for recognition really, you do it for thanks and sometimes appreciation but you definitely don’t expect to be like ‘you are the volunteer this year that we are highlighting as exceptional’,” Mr Clingin said.

“That’s not why I do it. I do it because I enjoy the people I volunteer with and I enjoy the implementation of programs and having fun with kids and generally being a larrikin.”

Camp Quality runs a number of programs, family camps and kids-only camps for children impacted by cancer, whether that is a brother, sister, mum, dad or themself.

“Every child that is affected by cancer needs kindness and needs optimism and that’s the main thing I think we do at Camp Quality is that we are kind and we are optimistic,” Mr Clingin said.

“We are so positive and that doesn’t mean we are unrealistic.”

Mr Clingin said that Camp Quality embraces the notion of ‘laughter is the best medicine’ but also encourages kids to be present in the moment and gain resilience.

Although he only got involved as part of a university placement, Mr Clingin loved his first volunteering experience so much, he stayed on for 13 years.

“Being around people that are constantly optimistic is something that doesn’t happen often in this world,” he said.

“I think that’s why I got involved and stayed there.”

Camp Quality even helped Mr Clingin make the shift from working in corporate sales to becoming a primary school teacher at Badger Creek Primary School two years ago.

“It definitely helped me become a teacher because I enjoyed teaching kids and being in front of a group.

“And it definitely helped me improve my teaching because it allows me to think more about where my kids are at and how is this group going right now?”

Camp Quality Family Program Coordinator Sam Bertrand said that Mr Clingin goes above and beyond, especially now as a camp leader.

his face, even though it is hidden behind his bushy beard,” Mr Bertrand said.

“He approaches everything he does with excellence; his passion is second to none and he embodies our values in everything he does.”

Mr Clingin is now in the running for the National Gillard Award.

The Gillard Award has been awarded annually since 2011 in line with National Volunteer Week.

Regional winners are nominated by their peers and Camp Quality employees. Nominations are based on excellence in volunteering, demonstrating Camp Quality values, and living Camp Quality culture.

The seat of controversy

By Taylah Eastwell A controversial seating arrangement in a Sassafras park has found itself swinging in and out of media headlines.

The new table, installed at Sassafras Village Green Park, has swing-style seats attached to the overhead shelter.

The ordeal began when a Sassafras woman called 3AW on Wednesday 19 May to express her concern over the new set-up.

“We are a tourist town, we get a lot of people coming up from all ages. I can just see people flipping off backwards, sitting there eating and swinging at the same time,” the woman told 3AW. “It was just a really interesting concept.

“I think kids are definitely going to hurt themselves,” the woman said.

The seats were implemented by Yarra Ranges Council as part of its temporary support for additional outdoor dining across the shire.

Yarra Ranges Council Director of Environment and Infrastructure, Mark Varmalis said council received feedback from Sassafras business owners and township groups that there was a need for additional seating in the tourist town.

“We opted for the more creative design for these temporary seats, to offer an interesting place for community members and visitors to meet, eat and play,” Mr Varmalis said.

“We have already had positive feedback from visitors to the Village Green about the seats, particularly about having more seating available in the green and the creative design elements such as the swinging seats,” he said.

Mr Varmalis said the seating unit is relocatable but has a “large ballast weight” to avoid any risk to the structure tipping, with all chains and joins also enclosed to avoid injury.

“We would recommend that anyone using the seats use them responsibly and sensibly, and supervise any children in their care using the seats.”

viewed, with community feedback to be considered.

Outdoor dining support has taken different forms in different regions across the Ranges, with new parklets created in the Yarra Valley and

Dandenongs with seating and tables for people to enjoy food and coffee from local businesses.

The temporary set-ups are an attempt to ease congestion at local cafes during peak tourism periods.

DRAFT BUDGET 2021-22 The 2021-22 Draft Budget, along with the draft Council Plan Action Plan and Rating and Revenue Plan, is now available for community feedback.

Council tackles ageism Yarra Ranges Council is challenging stereotypes against older people as part of a new ageism campaign.

The campaign, titled ‘Tackling Ageism Together: EveryAGE Counts in Melbourne’s East’, began last week as part of National Volunteer Week as a way of highlighting and recognising the many wonderful volunteers in our community, many of them being our older community members.

Yarra Ranges Council mayor Fiona McAllister said there were over 32,000 volunteers across the Yarra Ranges shire who each dedicate approximately 10 hours each month to help deliver vital services to the community.

“This year we also want to highlight that 32.5 per cent of our 32,000 volunteers are over the age of 55,” she said.

“Older people are often portrayed or believed to be a burden on the economy, But economists suggest that the true value of the millions of hours of unpaid and volunteer work done by older Australians could offset the total cost of the aged pension,” Ms McAllister said.

youth services and in the environment.

Cr McAllister said that ageism is our last acceptable form of discrimination and is far more widespread than most people realise.

“Ageism is a serious issue affecting older people. It comes from negative attitudes and beliefs about what it means to be older.

It affects the confidence, quality of life, job prospects, health and self-esteem of many older people in our community. At its extreme, ageism contributes to elder abuse,” Cr McAllister said.

C-ordinated by the Inner East Primary Care Partnership with support from the state government, the campaign is being undertaken by seven local councils, including Knox and Maroondah.

The campaign also ties into and supports the national EveryAGE Counts campaign and the Eastern Community Legal Centre’s work on preventing elder abuse.

Cr McAllister said Yarra Ranges Council will be raising awareness over coming months about ageism, and encouraging people to learn more about the issue and take action.

Michelle Trebilco, a serial op-shopper from Tecoma, is a self-confessed fashion “editor” – someone who takes pre-loved items and edits them to create something more fun.

But Michelle’s “editing” isn’t about hemming a dress or adding a few buttons to a blouse – she’s more into transforming exfridge compartments into handbags and gluing niche knick-knack items to her pre-loved shoes.

No two outfits the same, Michelle’s quirky ensembles have captivated audiences around the globe since she was first discovered on the Facebook op-shop community page ‘I Love to Op Shop’.

After some encouragement and confidence building, the Facebook community encouraged Michelle to create her own page dedicated to showing off her one-of-a-kind fashion pieces.

Known to the social media world as Veteran Vamp: A Thriftilicious Fashionista, or VV for short, Michelle now has a loyal following of over 8,500 people who look forward to her daily posts revealing her quirky, classy and often outlandish outfits each morning.

“My outfits have become like artwork. It has become quite complex now when I am trying to put things together, but then that is the fun of it as well,” Michelle said.

“I was originally hesitant to post photos of my face because I didn’t like it, I would only post photos from the neck down. But through the support I received on the ‘I Love to Op Shop’ page I’ve grown in confidence,” she said.

Now, Michelle strikes a pose like a pro, with her “patient husband” her designated inhouse photographer.

“It’s just me, my second hand clothes, garage door, non-professional husband with a bloody Samsung phone. Who needs all this professional sh*t,” Michelle laughs.

pieces to children’s outfits and punk grunge looks.

“I do it all because I don’t like to be limited.

I hate being limited because to me every style of fashion has got something awesome about it,” she said.

But limited isn’t something Michelle often feels, with thousands of artistic pieces sprawled across each and every room in her house.

“It’s a nightmare. I have a very understanding husband, obviously,” she laughs.

“One advantage of having so much is you can always get the perfect outfit together. I lose and rediscover things all the time because I’ve got so much,” she said.

For Michelle, the experimentation involved in altering clothes and handmaking headpieces, shoes and custom-made bags is all part of the fun.

“I’ve actually learnt so much about fashion since I first started, I never used to accessorise much to begin with but now I do it all the time because it really makes an outfit. I’m definitely having the most fun with the accessories lately because they just give that bang and make such a difference,” she said.

“I’m no seamstress, I’m a bit of a hack but when you get things so cheaply from op shops you can afford to experiment,” she said.

Her secret to her one-of-a-kind handbags is

to find any item that could double as a handle, having used retro phones, plastic snakes, and a toilet paper ring in past pieces.

“Then, if you find something you know you can put something in and somehow attach the handle, it’s a bag,” she laughs.

On an average day – after posting her look of the day – Michelle makes her way around op shops in Tecoma and surrounding Hills towns, where local shopkeepers often put items aside for the fashionista.

“People definitely know my taste, all the crazy stuff they’ll always put aside for me as well as the classic stuff,” she said.

And yes, she wears her outfits around town – including on her exercise walks through the Hills. With a pair of tiny heels in hand, Michelle admits she picked a pair “a bit more casual” given she planned to go on a nature walk that afternoon.

When asked about her best find in a thriftshop, Michelle said it would have to be the genuine Versace dress she picked up for $7.

“I liked the print on this dress and it wasn’t until I was on the train going home that I noticed the label on the inside seam. I’ve since had it confirmed that it is in fact genuine,” she said.

Other bargain finds have included a pair of vintage Yves Saint Laurent sunglasses and a Gucci dress shirt.

“For someone that’s a supposed fashionista I’m not very designer savvy, I’m happy to wear anything as long as it looks good.

And that’s her whole mantra, to stay away from retail and have fun with fashion.

“You just don’t have to go retail, I mean, why would you bother? I haven’t bought anything retail for years.

“I dress up for the hell of it, no event required. Why not, people hang on to things for that special occasion but that special occasion may not ever come so why not just do it,” she said.

Cockatoo commuity sensory garden comes to life

By Gabriella Payne Cockatoo’s Hills Community Gardens were buzzing with activity on Sunday 16 May, as the community came together to help create a beautiful native sensory garden, and learn some tips along the way.

The workshop saw people of all ages pull on their gardening gloves as they worked to create a garden rich for all the senses, and have a bit of fun at the same time.

A spokesperson for the Hills Community Garden, Brodie, said that it had been a ”great day” and it had been wonderful to see so many people getting their hands dirty to create such a beautiful, calming community garden.

“All gardens have the ability to enhance the senses, however sensory gardens are a wonderful way to support individual needs and personalise your gardening experience,” Brodie said.

“Within a sensory garden, plants and landscaping material are selected for their appeal to all five senses with the aim of offering a therapeutic experience to a range of people with different needs.”

Brodie said that all five senses including sight, sound, touch, taste and smell had been taken into consideration when planning out the garden - and by using native plants, the end result was even more special.

“Australia’s native plants are astounding, we have such a diverse collection of plants which are very unique and hardy, so we thought we would create an extra special sensory garden and use only Australian Native Plants.”

Security boost for monks

By Taylah Eastwell Nestled in the hills of Mt Evelyn, many would pass-by the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Meditation Centre without even realising the village town is home to Australia’s largest Buddhist monastery.

A place of complete peace and tranquil, where all are welcome, the feeling as you leave the long driveway after a visit to the centre can only be described as an overwhelming sense of calm.

Having once operated as the Melba Centre for children with disabilities, the site was purchased in 2014 by the Mahamevnawa Buddhist movement.

Although tucked away, the sense of community at the centre remains strong, with people coming from all over south-east Melbourne to learn buddhism, join in mediation classes and many community members volunteering their time to help with various upkeep jobs around the site.

Members of the monastery have in the past taken part in Keep Australia Beautiful rubbish collections, tree planting days and have put together food boxes and given firewood to people in need.

The monastery also purchases “every piece of medical equipment it can” from Victorian hospitals, from beds to walking sticks, machinery and wheelchairs - cleaning and repairing the equipment before sending the items to Sri Lanka where they are distributed by monks to community members in need.

But despite the peace, community spirit and acceptance exhibited from the centre, the site has been victim to its fair share of crime over the last seven years.

Peter Cameron, a Mt Evelyn resident and devotee of the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, said the site had been broken into on numerous occasions, with vandals breaking in through a rear door and stealing a voluntary contributions box full of money donated by those who attend the centre.

“And then, a year to the day, they came back again and attempted to steal another voluntary contributions box,” Mr Cameron said.

The second time, a new security door installed through generous community donations helped to prevent the theft, alongside security cameras also funded through donations.

Mr Cameron said Mt Evelyn police were able to track down the offenders the second time as a result of the security footage.

The thought of theft and criminal activity is alarming for the monks, who reside on site permanently and require 24-hour protection as a result.

Moving through the centre, other rooms intended for learning and prayer sadly tell stories of similar crime, with an attempted burglary also occurring after thieves tried to force their way into a medical supply room.

Mr Cameron said the road from the monastery to a local primary school had its bollards broken by thieves in a truck who used the road to gain access to the school and steal

“We’ve also had drug deals going on inside the driveway in the past,” Mr Cameron said.

With a new monks residence currently under construction, the monastery will soon be home to more monks who visit Melbourne from all-over.

The Mahamevnawa Buddhist Meditation Centre recently received a $365,274 grant from Latrobe MP Jason Wood as part of the Safety Communities Fund to assist with upgrades to security at the centre.

Mr Wood recently came under fire for his choice to fund a number of places of worship across the south-east, accused of handpicking a number of centres over others who ranked higher on a merits test.

Speaking to the Star Mail, Mr Wood said the centre expressed specific concerns over the safety of monks during one of the his visits to the site.

“When the department gets an application, they don’t visit all their applicants and hear their concerns firsthand. The ones who are successful may engage a professional consultant, so there isn’t that equal playing field. The key was the fear and concern for the monk’s safety, and I was in the position to do something about it,” Mr Wood said.

The monastery plans to use the grant money to fence the currently-open perimeter of the property with chain mesh and appropriate gates.

It also plans to increase the number of CCTV devices, add security steel mesh to

doors and add additional lighting in the car park, driveway and building surrounds.

“Monastery monks and the Buddhist community need to be protected whilst attending the monastery. We may have in excess of 300 members attending at any one time, and more at other times,” Mr Cameron said.

Charge scheme for roads

By Shelby Brooks Residents in Emerald and Cockatoo who live on dirt roads will be charged up to $7000 to seal them.

Ratepayers on Caroline Avenue, Boronia Crescent and Rouen Road in Cockatoo and Princess Avenue and Crichton Road in Emerald will be billed as part of a Special Charge Scheme, with the rest of the projects funded by the Federal Government.

The land owner contribution will make up 7 per cent of the total estimated $972,000 cost of the project in Emerald and 30 per cent of the $2,019,400 Cockatoo project.

Out of the 77 property owner surveyed

in Cockatoo, 13 opposed the special charge scheme while in Emerald only one household voiced opposition of 12 surveyed.

“This is a massive reduction compared to what it would cost otherwise if it only fell on land holders,” Rangers Ward councillor Jeff Springfield said.

“If it wasn’t for community groups working with council, advocating to the Federal Government back in early 2019, we wouldn’t have the funds available to make this amazing project.”

The roads are the first on the Sealing the Hills project by Cardinia Council which aims to upgrade most of the 860km of dirt roads in the shire.

“This project as a whole will see a good portion of that sealed in the next 10 years,” Cr Springfield said.

“We have an issue with dirt and unsealed roads across our shire. We fall in this unique position as Cardina- we’re on the fringe.

“In Covid-19 we discovered we were a metro council but many of our residents do feel like we live in rural areas.”

Mayor Brett Owen said the wider community would also benefit.

“People’s lives will change as a result of sealing these roads,” he said.

“Some of these roads, particularly in the centre of Cockatoo, a main township in Car-

dinia, schools are on unmade roads and this will fix that.

“We will still go to the State Government to get some further funding for around Cockatoo Primary School for parking and signage, but this will have a wider community benefit for Cockatoo.”

Cr Owen commended the Cockatoo Road Action Group 21 (CRAG21) for its professionalism in advocating for sealed roads.

In Emerald, Nobelius Heritage Park sits at the end of the unsealed Crichton Road.

“It’s a great asset in our shire, a tourism destination and this will now be served by a sealed road and some improvements around the car park,“ Mayor Owen said.

Volunteers needed to listen out for the lyrebird song

By Taylah Eastwell The Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group are looking forward to stepping foot back into the forest to check on the local lyrebird population.

Members of the survey group, which has been running since 1958, pile into Sherbrooke Forest each year before dawn and listen firsthand to all the birdsong as the forest wakes up, with a particular focus on the loud pitch of the lyrebird.

Member of Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group, Alex Maisey said the group started with dawn surveys in the mid 1970’s.

“It involves around 50-80 people, it’s really well supported. We’ve had people coming for decades and some really dedicated volunteers that get out there just before 6am under torch light and listen for the first calls of the male lyrebirds up in the trees,” Mr Maisey said.

“Parks Victoria light a campfire for us and we send everyone out to designated spots throughout the forest. The volunteers record the direction that they can hear each bird and the time that the birds start to sing, and we can then use triangulation to work out how many males we are listening to,” he said.

Mr Maisey said the large volunteer numbers often means people record hearing the same bird, with the lyrebirds’ song so loud it travels up to “800 metres”.

Picture: ALEX MAISEY “population crash” in the Dandenongs in the 1980’s, which was largely caused by feral foxes given that lyrebirds nest on the ground, according to Mr Maisey.

“They only have one chick per year so it’s a really slow reproduction rate and that really concerned the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group, so that’s been the reason we continue to go out and check on the population.

“Foxes have been a real issue and household cats that went into the forest. Then at the end of the 80’s they brought in a cat curfew and they are now meant to be retrained to property at night, that’s been a really great thing for the lyrebirds.

Another initiative that has helped local lyrebirds thrive is a Parks Victoria fox control program, Mr Maisey said.

“That has also been absolutely key in maintaining our lyrebird population and they have made a really good recovery in the last 20 years. In the 1980’s we did think we were going to lose lyrebirds in the Dandenongs, but thanks to the fox control and the cat curfew, we’ve seen them recover really well.

In Mr Maisey’s 20 years of doing the surveys, the population has “more than doubled”, with only around 25 lyrebirds recorded when he first began and over 60 recorded after the last survey in 2019.

However, the influx of people visiting Sherbrooke Forest over Covid-19 lockdowns is a cause of concern.

“We had this huge influx of visitors to the forest because people weren’t going to work and weren’t allowed to travel, I live next door to the forest and we have never had so many people walking off track. I could not believe the number of people that had just discovered the forest.

“You think people would gain more of an appreciation but you also worry about the impacts of more rubbish, more people walking dogs and the impact on the wildlife,” he said.

“A lot of people were going off track and chasing lyrebirds to photograph them, so we are a bit concerned about that. This year’s survey will be important to see how the population has weathered that impact,” Mr Maisey said.

Volunteers are invited to experience the lyrebirds of Sherbrooke Forest and participate in the 2021 annual dawn surveys after missing out in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The group are meeting at 6am at Grants Picnic Ground Shelter in Kallista, Melways Map 75, K4, on 19 June, 3 July and 17 July.

Students abandon school to strike for climate action

By Taylah Eastwell Homemade signs in hand, Hills school students and supporters gathered in Belgrave on Friday to kick off demonstrations as part of the School Strike 4 Climate initiative.

Held on 21 May, The School Strike 4 Climate is a mass nationwide protest in the name of climate action, which saw thousands of passionate protesters flock to major cities to get their voices heard.

The demonstration is aimed at getting the Morrison Government to say no to funding gas and coal projects and instead invest in clean, renewable energy.

Students also called for an end to coal projects, including the Adani mine, after the federal budget allocated $58 million towards increasing the gas industry.

Sassafras resident and Vermont College year 11 student, Mandela, led the protest in Belgrave before making her way to the city strike.

“I am part of the School Strike for Melbourne team in the unions area of the team.

I came here as a local student and speaker to speak for my community and strike,” Mandela said.

Mandela has been involved in community environment initiatives across the wider Hills region, works with an ocean organisation to help conduct education programs in her school and is currently organising a tree planting program with year seven students at her college.

“We only have a short time period where we are able to fix these mistakes and if we don’t take that opportunity we won’t have the chance to fix things up in the future,” she said.

Grandmothers for Refugees member Prue Licht, from Belgrave, was also at the strike and

planned to go into the city for the 1pm start.

“I want people to acknowledge that we are actually in a lot of trouble and we all need to do something, not just the people who walk around,” Ms Licht said.

“We all need to vote the right way at the next election. My hope is that people will wake up from this dream that we live in this beautiful

place, look at the sun, it won’t be so beautiful sometime,” she said.

Ms Licht said it was “wonderful” to see young people getting involved. “They are our future, and there seems to be lots of them here.

The last climate strike I went to in the city it was amazing to see so many young people,” she said.

Rotary steams on ahead

By Taylah Eastwell The Hills were alive with community spirit over the weekend as Puffing Billy meandered through the mountains with yellow rotary flags flowing in the breeze outside the carriages full of smiling faces.

The heritage train was jam-packed as members of the Rotary Club of Emerald and District joined members of the Rotary Club of Belgrave and their descendants on Saturday 22 May for a celebratory train trip from Belgrave to Emerald to mark 100 years of rotary service in Australia and New Zealand.

Relatives, local school children and dignitaries also boarded the train, with 100 people on board to commemorate the occasion.

Leaving Belgrave at 11am, the celebration train adorned with rotary flags stopped briefly at Menzies Creek before steaming into Emerald Station just after 12pm.

Rotarians were met with the sound of live music from the Emerald Secondary College band, while crowds enjoyed static displays and information showcasing Rotary’s proud history of providing humanitarian services, building goodwill and working towards peace.

At each station, a special baton of service was passed from one Rotary dignitary to another, signifying a commitment to another 100 years of service to Australian communities.

President of the Rotary Club of Emerald and District, Vicki van den Bergen said Rotary had a strong record of active service in the Hills area.

“Since our club’s establishment in 1980, our passionate members have worked together to create positive change in the wellbeing of our community and beyond,” Vicki said.

“From supporting victims of the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires to our work today assisting those impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, our club has been at the forefront of helping people of all ages who may be struggling through no fault of their own.

“We also support many international campaigns such as End Polio Now and run several major community events that raise muchneeded funds for worthy causes. Our Kids Fun Run with Thomas event, for example, has raised more than $670,000 since it began in 2002, with 100 per cent of proceeds donated to local organisations that support children.”

Top apprentice’s career is on the boil

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges boilermaker Carley Attard has been named as the State Apprentice of the Year at the annual Master Builders Victoria awards held at Marvel Stadium.

Ms Attard, who works at Nuform Steel Fabrications in Bayswater, also won the MBV Employer Nominated Apprentice of the Year award.

Having arrived at the 18 May event, Ms Attard’s employer Greg Cole suggested she should write a speech “just in case” she won, to which she thought wouldn’t be necessary.

“It was awesome. I was not expecting it at all,” Ms Attard said. “It was a good feeling having all the hard work I’ve put in recognised,” she said. “There’s not many boilermakers that get nominated or even make it that far.”

And despite not being prepared to go on stage and deliver a winner’s speech, Ms Attard made the most of the opportunity.

“I asked for a day off while my boss was on stage with me, so he couldn’t really say much,” she joked.

Ms Attard received her qualification from Chisholm last August and has since been working as a foreman on site in Lilydale helping construct Yarra Ranges Council’s new offices.

“Having won this, it opens more doors for me, people are starting to realise that I do actually know what I’m talking about and take me a bit more seriously.”

Ms Attard said she hopes other people can realise their opportunity to join a trade after seeing her success at the MBV awards.

Metalwork wasn’t always on the cards for Ms Attard as she previously worked at Coles, but found the job wasn’t taking her to where she wanted to be. So determined to find a new career path, she set out to nearby businesses to hand in her resume.

“I was working in the deli and I initially wanted to move up into management there.

But I wasn’t given that opportunity and I wasn’t going anywhere and I wasn’t happy anymore so I decided I wanted to do something else,” she said.

“I thought a trade would be good. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and

I’m not afraid to get dirty. Where I was working in Coles was in Bayswater where there is a big industrial area.

“I started handing out resumes and talking to different people and Greg pretty much gave me a job on the spot. That was it. I was welding on the second day. He said, ‘anyone who wants to come in here and ask for a job, I’ll give them a shot’.”

It was that sense of initiative of entering a new industry by approaching various employers that impressed the MBV judges. Ms Attard was also commended for her creativity and passion for the process of building, not just the result.

“I like the fact that I can look at something from nothing and see what it’s going to be. Or be handed a set of drawings and be able to make it into something awesome.”

Having taken home two awards, Ms Attard collected a pool of prizes from vouchers to power tools. And while they may not be applicable to her unique trade, she said she’ll be using them to renovate her Woori Yallock home.

Know your rights at work Getting your first job can be an exciting time, but can also be daunting. There are many things to consider, including an individual’s right to be paid and treated fairly according to the standards set by government to protect employees.

Unless you are working for yourself as a contractor or have a job in the so-called ‘gig economy’ (short-term contracts or freelance work), it is likely you will be hired as permanent (fixed, guaranteed hours) or casual (flexible hours, no guaranteed shifts). There are National Employment Standards that set minimum requirements for permanent and casual employees, and these standards can be found on the Fair Work website at www.fairwork.gov. au. It’s a good idea to check out these standards and be aware of your rights before accepting employment.

Depending on your industry and your em-

ployer, you may also be entitled to additional entitlements through an industry award or an enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA). If you aren’t sure what these might be, Fair Work also has tools to help you work out your minimum pay and other workplace conditions.

If you’re not covered by an award or EBA you may need to negotiate conditions with an

employer, including wages and hours. Once agreed on, it’s important that these conditions are made available in writing, and ideally your employer would provide this as part of a formal contract. If your employer doesn’t provide this in writing, communicate your understanding of the agreement back to the employer in writing as soon as possible.

Another issue to be aware of is wage theft.

Wage theft is when employees are not paid the correct wage, and sometimes this can happen over long periods of time. To avoid wage theft, keep informed about what the minimum wage should be for your role, and keep track of the hours you work - especially if you are a casual employee. Always check your pay and make sure it matches with the hours worked and your agreed pay rate. By doing this, you will avoid having to work out these details later

Tusker carries the awareness of his slipping mind with dignity, and the couple’s differing approach to this eventuality forms the film’s main thread of tension. Sam is utterly devoted to Tusker but terrified of the challenges he faces as Tusker deteriorates further, Tusker does not want to be a burden on the man he loves, and the couple clashes when Sam discovers a heartbreaking secret.

Helping girls to succeed Parents often ask about the advantages of an all-girls education during their tour of Mater Christi College Belgrave, a contemporary Catholic Secondary School for girls.

The atmosphere at HEI Schools Emerald Early Learning Centre was filled with anticipation earlier this month as the children eagerly awaited the arrival of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

When the day finally arrived, the children were ecstatic.

“We have a plane in our car park!”

“How did it get here without any wings?”

Through this unique opportunity, HEI Schools Emerald became the first Victorian early learning centre to engage with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and their flight simulator. Captain Tom from the RFDS was on hand to explain their service and the important role the RFDS play in rural communities. The simulator plane provided the children with an opportunity to put their new found knowledge into practice- using stethoscopes, flight communication headsets and, of course, the flight simulator.

The incursion aligned with a key focus area at HEI Schools Emerald; supporting children as active participants in their own learning.

HEI Schools is an international preschool concept originating from Finland, co-founded by the University of Helsinki and created in collaboration with experienced educators and design experts.

Embracing Nordic values of accessibility and openness, the centre opened in 2019 and promotes children’s perspectives, creativity and play, exploration and socio-emotional skills. HEI Schools believes that children who learn through inquiry and play go on to succeed academically.

“All of the children experience respectful play-based learning,” Centre Director Amanda Patris said.

“We hold the belief learning happens everywhere and all the time.”

Ready, steady and read ‘Opening up a new world’ is this year’s theme for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

The annual challenge has been running since 2005 and has seen more than three million students read over 51 million books.

The challenge encourages students between Prep and Year 10 to explore the literacy world and expand their reading ability.

Students have until Friday 17 September to read the selected number of books for their age group and can choose from over 12,000 books.

Prep to Year 2 students need to read at least 30 books, of which 20 or more must be from the challenge book list.

Year 3 to Year 9 need to read a total of 15 books and at least 10 need to be from the challenge book list. Year 10 students also need to read 15 books but only five need to be from the challenge book list.

As part of the theme, parents and teachers are encouraged to help diversify their children and student’s reading regime.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and heritage is an important part of expanding children’s literature of Australia’s history.

The Department of Education has put together a list of books for students to read, perhaps as part of the challenge or maybe not, either way learning about one of the oldest living cultures on earth should intrigue some students.

Books like Clever Crow are available for Prep to Grade 2, Kicking Goals for Grades 3 to 4, Young Dark Emu: a truer history for Grades 5 to 6, Tell Me Why: for young adults for Year 7 to 8 and Becoming Kirrali Lewis for Years 9 and 10.

Moves to ban aggressive parents from school grounds Victorian schools may soon have the power to ban aggressive and violent parents from entering school grounds, with new laws being considered in parliament.

Minister for Education James Merlino introduced the Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) Bill on Tuesday 4 May, which would effectively give school principals the power to issue School Community Safety Orders to parents, carers and other people who engage in harmful, threatening or abusive behaviour in school environments.

The new laws will also allow schools to ban parents that engage in inappropriate behaviour through social media and other channels, with schools able to impose requirements on the way parents interact with the wider school community - including by stopping them from entering school grounds.

Schools must ensure people issued with orders are still able to communicate with the school and remain informed about the child’s education.

The changes will build on existing legislation and aim to provide greater procedural

fairness to parents, carers and other adult members of the school community.

Avenues for review of orders will include an internal merits review and an external review at VCAT if the parent or carer doesn’t agree with the internal outcome.

Failure to comply with a School Community Safety Order can result in a court appearance, with the Magistrates Court able to issue an order requiring compliance, a fine of up to $9,913.20 or any other order the court deems appropriate.

Hawks scoot away

The Hawks are now five wins for zero losses, with a whopping percentage of 229.

While leading for the entire game, the Hawks put the foot on the accelerator in the final term, scooting away with a 13.7 (85) to 6.5 (41) win.

The Hawks kicked five unanswered goals in the final stanza.

Taylor Joyce continues to have one almighty season, booting another five, his season tally now moves to 27 after five bouts.

With the long season, his current form could see Joyce nudge the century.

Seville got back on the winners list, nudging out Healesville.

The Blues had a poor loss before the bye but launched back with an 11.14 (80) to 7.8 (50) win.

If Seville are to bring home the silverware, it is going to take a marvellous finals performance from sharp-shooters Leigh Williams and Nathan O’Keefe.

Glen’s name is on the board at Monbulk

By Armin Richter Glen James was born into a sporting family in Monbulk and from an early age he had a great love of watching the local football and cricket.

He would follow all the results of Monbulk and his adopted VFL club Hawthorn. Glen became an avid Hawthorn fan in 1965 when Hawthorn great David Parkin was a teacher at Monbulk Primary School. Through the 70’s and 80’s, Glen would follow Hawthorn to wherever they played in Melbourne, knowing the train and bus timetables backwards weeks in advance of each game.

By 1993 he had decided to stop going to AFL matches and he would watch his local side Monbulk again. Glen would keep his own notes on the progressive scores of the games that he watched. His love of the scores drew him towards the scoreboard and he offered his services to operate the scoreboard for the football club for season 1994. Usually a scoreboard attendant would have to be bribed with a pie and soft drink to do the thankless task for a game but such was Glen’s enthusiasm for the job that he not only volunteered to do it for nothing but also to do all three games - Under 18s, Reserves and Seniors. This was a long day with a 10am start and a 4:30-5pm finish.

Rain, hail or shine, Glen would be one of the first at the ground each week and for the next 25 years did not miss a single weekend of duty. As soon as one season finished he would approach the President and again commit for the next season, before the cricket had even begun. As sure as night follows day, if Monbulk was playing at home then Glen would be in the box, with his trusty radio tuned into Hawthorn matches for update scores.

In 2000 he won Monbulk FC’s Best Club Person award and in 2008 he was made a Life Member of the Monbulk Football Netball Club.

In the end he outlasted the actual scoreboard.

The scoreboard box that had originally sat beside the clubrooms on the top wing was modified and moved to the bottom wing in the early 2000s. By 2018 it was decommissioned as a new electronic scoreboard was built as part of the ground redevelopment.

To recognise Glen’s remarkable service of operating the scoreboard for a quarter of a century, the Monbulk Football Netball Club, in consultation with the Monbulk Junior FC and Monbulk Cricket Club, have decided to name the new scoreboard as the Glen James Scoreboard.

On a warm Saturday afternoon away from home, Olinda’s seniors were treated to perfect conditions for football in their biggest challenge for the year so far against ladder-leading Beaconsfield.

With two late outs pre-game, young bloods Ethan Royle-Young and Oakley Jessop were called up. Significantly Olinda listed six under 19s players for the clash.

In the first term Olinda’s effort was very honest, yet ball skills were poor.

A high number of turnovers to the opposition helped Beaconsfield jump to a three goal to nil start.

As per usual, key forward Lachy Taylor found himself competing against numerous defenders, and despite consistently bringing the ball to ground, Beaconsfield’s defensive structure proved effective in limiting any scoreboard impact from the Bloods.

With a notable intensity lift from the Eagles in the second quarter, the Bloods struggled once again to hit the scoreboard and Beaconsfield was able to score repeatedly from Olinda mistakes.

Matt Scharenberg and Ben Watson proved crucial in defense however, limiting the damage as much as possible and preventing a dramatic score blow out.

A nine-goal lead to the Eagles didn’t do justice to Olinda’s effort.

Going back to the basics for the second half, the message for the Bloods was “man on man” as Olinda hoped to stem the tide and prevent the outnumber that Beaconsfield had enjoyed in the first half.

But in the third term the Eagle’s spread was fantastic, and their ball use was elite. They blew out the margin to 90 points at the final change.

Determined not to drop their heads and give in to a classy opposition, Olinda entered the fourth quarter ignoring the scoreboard and focussing on the little wins.

Midfielders Pat Rosier and Peter Gough continued to hit the contest hard and Nick Keegan continued to provide run.

The Bloods finally received reward for effort, kicking three goals to one to outscore Beaconsfield for the quarter.

The final result was an 80-point win to the Eagles. The take home message was Beaconsfield are excellent and Olinda can learn from the game and must keep improving.

The gutsy last quarter provides a good platform for Pakenham next weekend.

In other games the Olinda reserves 9-4-58 lost to Beaconsfield 8-14-62 in a nail biter.
