Be active, learn better

By Mikayla Van Loon Ever thought about the link between motor skills and children succeeding at school?

Well the link is actually quite high as researched by GymbaRoo. The ‘No Child Should Fail’ schools research project in 2007 and the ‘Unlocking Potential (UP)’ research projects of 2013 and 2015 found that early learning of motor skills helped kids excel academically, emotionally, in leadership roles and on the sporting field.

The Unlocking Potential program is a sensory-motor-perceptual program for primary schools.

In the 2014 to 2015 school year, 314 students took part in 25 minute sessions before the school day started three times a week.

The study found that the students who participated in the program increased their neurological age by at least 22 months throughout the 12 month period.

Teacher’s also noticed a change in behaviour, attention and ability to comprehend.

By repeating motor skills from a young age, the brain learns to control movements and in turn allows kids to hold a pencil, sit still and follow a task.

Motor skill development helps stimulate eye muscles and vision, forming better pathways in the brain to look up and down, left and right or near and far, which is essential for reading and learning. .

Although it can be a slow process, babies and toddlers need time to work out how to do certain things in their own developmental stages.

To encourage babies to develop their skills, get them to be as active and unrestricted as possible.

Tummy time is excellent for those inbuilt exploratory movements like crawling, rolling over and discovering.

Dance, swing and sway with babies to nursery rhymes or songs to get their bodies moving.

For toddlers and preschoolers, avoid too

Ready, steady, read - Premiers’ Reading Challenge ‘Opening up a new world’ is this year’s theme for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

The annual challenge has been running since 2005 and has seen more than three million students read over 51 million books.

The challenge encourages students between Prep and Year 10 to explore the literacy world and expand their reading ability.

Students have until Friday 17 September to read the selected number of books for their age group and can choose from over 12,000 books.

Prep to Year 2 students need to read at least 30 books, of which 20 or more must be from the challenge book list.

Year 3 to Year 9 need to read a total of 15 books and at least 10 need to be from the challenge book list.

Year 10 students also need to read 15 books but only five need to be from the challenge book list.

As part of the theme, parents and teachers are encouraged to help diversify their children and student’s reading regime.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and heritage is an important part of expanding children’s literature of Australia’s history.

The Department of Education has put together a list of books for students to read, perhaps as part of the challenge or maybe not, either way learning about one of the oldest living cultures on earth should intrigue some students.

Books like Clever Crow are available for Prep to Grade 2, Kicking Goals for Grades 3 to 4, Young Dark Emu: a truer history for Grades 5 to 6, Tell Me Why: for young adults for Year 7 to 8 and Becoming Kirrali Lewis for Years 9 and 10.

SEMMA goes to school

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A tour of the innovative Hallam Senior College has impressed a group of local manufacturers.

On 5 May, South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) members toured the college while enjoying food prepared by the campus’s hospitality students.

The manufacturers got a first-hand look at the school’s initiatives, such as its Innovation Academy promoting ‘higher-level’ engineering, IT and science.

Not to mention the college’s other academies that offer career pathways in sport and creative arts.

SEMMA chief executive Vonda Fenwick said the college was “developing the young people our manufacturers need” to join an “exciting manufacturing sector”.

“With careers, not just jobs available, manufacturing offers life-long workplace opportunities.

“Unlike sectors such as retail, manufacturing offers mainly full-time, long term positions.

“Most manufacturers managed to continue to operate even during periods of COVID lockdown providing a level of security not found in hospitality, tourism and retail.“ Ms Fenwick was impressed by the college’s “inspiring” work and its staff’s “enthusiasm and energy”.

“The training opportunities and the passion demonstrated in supporting and guiding the students into meaningful career pathways are inspiring.”

The college would in turn tailor its training to tackle those missing skill sets.

“We’re trying to open the school up to industry so we can better tie in with industry and find them job-ready graduates.

The college - which says it’s “much more than a senior secondary college” - trains more than 200 students in Certificate II and III qualifications.

It is also proactively pursuing partnerships with manufacturers - such as a preemployment course for job seekers to gain work at Jayco.

“We’re trying to expose our community to the benefits that a senior secondary college can offer,” Mr Patten says.

In the meantime, SEMMA plans to hold its next board meeting at the college. Students are again expected to cater for the event.

Senior students embrace leadership opportunities At St Paul Apostle North, rather than the traditional school captains, we involve all of our senior students in a leadership program designed to promote respect and care for others. As a level our students investigate issues or areas for improvement that they identify in our school, the local community or globally.

They collect data through surveys, interviews and observations. The students then use social skills, collaboration, design and technology to generate innovative ideas to solve problems and address these issues.

In the past students have used ‘Fun Theory’ to design fun bins to encourage their peers to recycle. They have written, directed and acted in short films to address social issues such as racism or family violence. They have collected warm coats and blankets for the homeless and made up toiletry packs to be delivered by the Soup Van in the city. They have run lunch clubs to help younger children with their social skills and held market stalls with products they have designed and produced to raise money for those in need!

Our leadership program uses the Catholic Social Teachings to put our Catholic Faith into action. It builds the confidence of our students as they realise they can make a difference in the lives of others. Every Senior student at St Paul Apostle North is a leader and everyone is encouraged and supported to develop strong leadership and communication skills which they then carry forward to become active citizens with a strong sense of social justice and a firm belief that they can make a difference.

Mother’s Day at Emerson

Mother’s Day is always a special time for the students of the Essential Food Studies class at Emerson School. Given a brief to create an arrangement of cookies, to be made to look like flowers, the students went to work.

With only their creativity as their limits, the students planned and prepped what they were going to do, then put it all in motion. Not only did they need to plan their cook, but also plan their presentation. Each arrangement was styled in a flower pot which was hand painted by each student.

Starting out with just butter, sugar an egg and some flour, the students made the cookie dough, which was then transformed into a floral style bouquet!

Once the cookies were baked, it was time to decorate and arrange. This was where the creative elements of the students really came to the fore, with different coloured fondants, edible pearls, sugar flowers and even gold and silver leaf, the students had all the tools required to create a Mother’s Day masterpiece!

When asked, Sarah said “I love doing this kind of work at school, it lets me make something personal for Mum, and showcases what we do in this class on a daily basis”. Kane also mentioned “after doing completely different subjects last year, this dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

is my favourite class because at the end of a long day in the kitchen, you have something to show for your work”.

The students were very proud of their creations and very excited to give their cookie pots to their Mums and Grandmothers.

Drug use hidden Truckie Mohinder Bajwa Singh injected meth and was falling asleep during a shift on the day before he crashed and killed four police officers in Kew, a witness has testified.

However, Singh’s family and work colleagues have told a court they had no idea that the truck driver was on the drug ‘ice’.

Simonia Tuteru, 49, who was Singh’s supervisor at Lyndhurst-based Connect Logistics, faced manslaughter charges at a committal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 17-20 May. A prosecution witness Glenys Nannup stated that she’d injected ice with Singh during his

shift early on 21 April 2020 – the day before the fatal crash on the Eastern Freeway.

She hid in the back of Singh’s truck as they passed through security at a Thomastown depot.

Soon after leaving, they pulled over and shared “about three points” of ice, she stated.

On the way back to the Lyndhurst depot, Singh called her a “good witch” and talked about seeing shadows.

“It was also after we had injected that his driving turned to s***,” Ms Nannup stated to police.

“He was swerving. Shutting his eyes, as in falling to sleep. He couldn’t concentrate.”

Ms Nannup claimed Singh had boasted of

issues” at home. Four hours before the crash, Mr Harrison texted Tuteru that Singh was “not in a good spot” and should not be driving.

Singh’s wife, son and daughter testified they had no suspicion Singh was using drugs.

On the morning of the crash, Nikita Hawthorne – who had bought cannabis off Singh – observed Singh “talking nonsense” at a house in Cranbourne, according to her police statement.

“He was saying the witches are coming and we have to leave.

“I had never seen anyone as drug f***ed in my life.

Young career on the boil

By Jed Lanyon Boilermaker Carley Attard, who studied at Chisholm Dandenong, has been named as the State Apprentice of the Year at the annual Master Builders Victoria awards held at Marvel Stadium.

Ms Attard, who works at Nuform Steel Fabrications in Bayswater, also won the MBV Employer Nominated Apprentice of the Year award.

Having arrived at the 18 May event, Ms Attard’s employer Greg Cole suggested she should write a speech “just in case” she won, to which she thought wouldn’t be necessary.

“It was awesome. I was not expecting it at all,” Ms Attard said. “It was a good feeling having all the hard work I’ve put in recognised,” she said. “There’s not many boilermakers that get nominated or even make it that far.”

And despite not being prepared to go on stage and deliver a winner’s speech, Ms Attard made the most of the opportunity.

“I asked for a day off while my boss was on stage with me, so he couldn’t really say much,” she joked.

Ms Attard received her qualification from Chisholm last August and has since been working as a foreman on site in Lilydale helping construct Yarra Ranges Council’s new offices.

“Having won this, it opens more doors for me, people are starting to realise that I do actually know what I’m talking about and take me a bit more seriously.”

Ms Attard said she hopes other people can realise their opportunity to join a trade after seeing her success at the MBV awards.

Metalwork wasn’t always on the cards for Ms Attard as she previously worked at Coles, but found the job wasn’t taking her to where she wanted to be. So determined to find a new career path, she set out to nearby businesses to hand in her resume.

“I was working in the deli and I initially wanted to move up into management there.

But I wasn’t given that opportunity and I wasn’t going anywhere and I wasn’t happy anymore so I decided I wanted to do something else,” she said.

“I thought a trade would be good. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and I’m not afraid to get dirty. Where I was working in Coles was in Bayswater where there is a big industrial area.

“I started handing out resumes and talking to different people and Greg pretty much gave me a job on the spot. That was it. I was welding on the second day. He said, ‘anyone who wants to come in here and ask for a job, I’ll give them a shot’.”

It was that sense of initiative of entering a new industry by approaching various employers that impressed the MBV judges. Ms Attard was also commended for her creativity and passion for the process of building, not just the result.

“I like the fact that I can look at something from nothing and see what it’s going to be. Or be handed a set of drawings and be able to make it into something awesome.”

Ms Attard shared her experience of being a woman in the male dominated construction industry and said she wouldn’t want to be treated any differently.

“It’s been great, all the guys I’ve worked with have been fantastic. On site, most of the guys are pretty good. You get some weird looks though, I’ve noticed. Most of the time I’m wearing a hardhat and all my hair’s tied up and I’ll have people turn around to me and say, “hey buddy… oh sorry”.

“I’ve had some guys pick things up for me.

I can do it and if I need help I’ll ask for help. I appreciate it, but I’m really fine. I’m not a little delicate flower, I can do this. I wouldn’t have gone into the trade if I couldn’t.”

Hardship is on the rise for ratepayers

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong has offered more than 150 rates waivers for ratepayers in financial difficulty during the pandemic-hit 2020-‘21.

In the past three years, the council partially waived 227 rates bills at an escalating rate.

In a sign of rising levels of distress, council waivers are only reserved for “extreme circumstances” under the council’s hardship policy.

Generally the waivers don’t exceed $500 each.

In 2018-’19, 22 ratepayers were waived a total of $8394. This rose to 54 waivers of a total $18,807 the following year.

In the current financial year, the council assisted 151 ratepayers with a total $32,850 of waivers.

On top of the general waivers, Greater Dandenong also offered Covid-19 rebates to nearly 11,700 ratepayers at a cost of $196,400.

This comprised of $100 reductions to 10,713 pensioner ratepayers and $200 waiv-

ers to 982 ratepayers.

A recent State Ombudsman’s report into local councils’ hardship policies found a great disparity between “generous” councils and “punitive” ones.

Some were described as “too quick to sue” without exploring alternatives, the report stated.

Of 13 surveyed councils, Greater Dandenong was one of two councils that offered waivers “in any substantial way”.

Nine councils didn’t offer any waivers in 2018-’19 and 2019-’20.

The Ombudsman had previously raised concerns with some councils’ “blanket” refusal to grant waivers.

Some charged interest when they did offer hardship relief, such as payment plans or deferrals.

“The Ombudsman has seen cases where over time other councils have charged ratepayers hundreds or thousands of dollars.

“In some cases, the interest charges have

built over time and now make up anywhere from a quarter to nearly 50 per cent of the ratepayer’s total debt.”

There were also concerns about “heavyhanded debt collection” by some councils.

Greater Dandenong uses debt collection agents and court actions to recover debt.

In 2018-’19 and 2019-’20, Greater Dandenong initiated 319 court actions.

“Council makes every effort to contact ratepayers before any debt recovery action occurs,” its corporate services director Mick Jaensch said.

“This includes multiple reminder letters and a letter from the debt agency prior to any action being taken.”

Mr Jaensch said the council had “many payment arrangements” with residents to give them “flexibility” to pay when they could.

The Ombudsman report noted that Greater Dandenong was among several councils to refer residents to financial counselling.

Riders 146km/h over the limit Two motorcyclists have been allegedly clocked at 208km/h in a 60km/h zone in Dandenong.

The pair were detected by State Highway Patrol police on Heatherton Road about 1am on Thursday 13 May. Police Air Wing tracked one of the motorcycles to a dead-end street in Clyde North.

A 33-year-old Pakenham man was arrested at the scene.

He is expected to appear on summons at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

Hunt for hoon spectators Two men have been charged after a police vehicle was allegedly attacked and damaged at a hoon gathering in Lynbrook.

Police are also seeking public help to identify several people at the “high-risk driving event” at Business Park and Commercial drives about 11pm on Tuesday 11 May. Cardinia Highway Patrol officers say they observed a 2002 Holden Commodore dropping burnouts next to a group of spectators.

Police tried to intercept the Holden, which allegedly sped off at speed.

Several spectators approached and stood in front of the police car, intentionally blocking its path, police say.

They kicked the police car and ran from the scene.

The officers also observed a motorcyclist travelling on the wrong side of South Gippsland Highway.

The rider tried to perform burnouts in front of oncoming traffic. They refused to stop for police, taking off at speed on the highway.

The Holden was later located by police officers, with the assistance of Police Air Wing.

Two men were arrested.

A 22-year-old Drouin man was charged with 10 offences including reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, drive vehicle causing loss of traction, fail to stop on police direction and drive at a speed dangerous.

His vehicle was seized. Police say they will apply at court for the vehicle’s forfeiture.

The man was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 July.

A 23-year-old Doveton man was released pending further enquiries.

Police released images of several men and a woman who allegedly obstructed police at the hoon gathering, as well the motorcycle rider.

One of the men wore a black zip-up jacket with KSCY on the left sleeve and a dark-coloured baseball cap with a white motif.

The motorcyclist is believed to be riding an orange and white Honda motorbike and was wearing a black jumper with a white motif on the back, light-coloured pants, black shoes and a white-and-black helmet.

Cold discomfort for bus passengers

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A bureaucratic impasse over a removed busstop shelter is leaving commuters in Keysborough out in the cold.

The bus-stop, in a prime location on Kingsclere Avenue directly opposite Parkmore shopping centre, has been without a shelter for months.

Greater Dandenong Council removed the shelter – “an old council asset” - because it was deemed “structurally unsound”.

Regular commuter and retiree Patrick Solomons says the old Perspex shelter was “one of the best”. It was able to withstand attempts by vandals to smash it, he says.

Mr Solomons has pleaded with the council and the State Government for a replacement – to no avail.

Meanwhile, winter approaches for several elderly passengers like Neil who is confined to a wheelchair and another man in his 80s who takes 30 minutes to hobble from Parkmore to the bus stop.

Mr Solomons relies on the route 812, 813 and 815 services to Dandenong for shopping and doctors’ appointments.

“We are the ones who pay for our tickets,” Mr Solomons says – claiming many other “young” passengers don’t.

Engineering director Paul Kearsley said the State Government was responsible for providing bus shelters and other public transport infrastructure.

“As Council does not receive any funding for the provision or maintenance of bus shelters any requests for new or replacement bus shelters should be directed to Public Transport Victoria.”

However according to the Department of

Transport, the council has a contract with a private operator oOh! Media for the shelter.

The department is “unable to manage shelters within the locality” until the contract’s expiry in 2025.

In the meantime, the department is only providing advice on suitable locations and infrastructure as well as overseeing appropriate design standards.

“We’re working with the City of Greater Dandenong Council in an advisory role, exploring options to replace the bus shelter and deliver a safe, convenient public transport experience for the Dandenong community,” a department spokesperson said.

According to the department, the council is removing 12 “dilapidated” bus shelters.

But there was no word on who is funding any replacements.

A Dandenong man has been charged over an allegedly lewd act at Huntingdale railway station.

Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested the 37-year-old in Dandenong on Friday 14 May. He has been charged with one count of sexual activity directed at another. Police say that a female victim was allegedly approached by the man about 12.30am on 3 March.

The man is accused of exposing himself and masturbating in front of the woman before boarding a train. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 July.

Fire catches bus Fire crews were called to extinguish a bus that caught fire in Dandenong.

Eleven FRV firefighters found the bus’s rear wheel in flames at the Ventura bus depot on Cheltenham Road shortly before 11pm on Monday 17 May. The fire was quickly extinguished, an FRV spokesperson said.

They remained at the scene for 30 minutes to ensure the site was safe.

‘Hoon’ racer’s car impounded Police impounded a car after allegedly observing a driver doing “excessive speed laps” on Princes Highway, Noble Park early on Saturday 22 May. The 24-year-old Springvale man also allegedly tried to race other vehicles at the intersection of Browns Road.

He is expected to attend court on summons for loss of traction and careless driving.

Police in the South East are targeting illegal hoon meets and other intentional high-risk driving activity as part of Operation Achilles.

It is a great improvement on the gas, and gives the buildings a more inviting appearance on a dark wintery night than previously. The installing of a globe outside the lobby at the ticket counter is a long-felt want carried out, and illuminates the approach to and from the station, thus obviating any danger with pedestrian and vehicle traffic during the winter.

Lit has approved a loan of $50,000 to the City of Springvale to meet part of the cost of building a regional library in Springvale Rd. The library will serve the Cities of S’vale and Dandenong and the shires of Berwick and Cranbourne. Mr E R Long manager of the Wales at Springvale said he was pleased the bank had been able to assist with such a note worthy community project. Mr Long said the ability of the Wales savings bank to lend such projects depended on the support given by the public and this new loan was a clear indication that such support had been forthcoming. The Mayor Cr I R Hetherington said the Wales had been assisting council with its loan programme every year since 1957.

Many of the amenities being enjoyed today were originally financed in the funds from the bank.

The Federal Government last week announced the state would generate more than half the money needed to build the Ringwood to Frankston link - up to $600m - via shadow tolls which would see the operator build the road but paid back by the state based on how many vehicles used the freeway. Chairman of the eastern ring road steering committee and Greater Dandenong councillor Kevin Walsh said the community would oppose a “direct impost” on motorists by way of a shadow toll.

This was among several shocking statistics that about 60 people heard at a Dandenong Family Violence Community Forum at Chisholm in Dandenong on Thursday 19 May. Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence Fiona Richardson said that changing social attitudes about the value of women would reduce violence against them. “We are all going to have to engage on this question and have some tough and challenging conversations.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle William organised the event. “My extended family has been touched by family violence” she said. “We all have these stories.” She played a video pushing the message that treating boys and girls differently perpetuated inequality that created an environment for family violence to occur.

From 24 May, Pfizer vaccines were set to also be available at the centre for eligible under 50’s.

In the South East, more than 270,000 vaccine shots had been administered in two months. About 500 a day are being performed at the vaccination hub at Cranbourne.

As part of its Sandown push, Monash Health is targeting CALD communities.

On 18 May, information was available in 15 languages at Sandown. Phone interpreters were also available.

“This is a really multicultural area so we had a forum with community leaders the other night,” Professor Stuart said.

“We’re looking to them to promote this.”

A Covid vaccination hub that can deliver up to 2000 jabs a day has opened at Sandown Racecourse.

South Sudanese community leaders were among the first to roll up their sleeves for AstraZeneca shots at the centre’s 29 booths on 19 May. Jago Adongjak of Centre for Multicultural Youth said the vaccine was a “very important step in fighting this coronavirus”.

“We need as a community to be seen to be doing the right thing.

“I’ve taken it today because it’s very important for everybody - for yourself, your family, your community and most importantly Australia.”

Mr Adjongjak said “too much conflicting information in the media” was causing hesitancy. It needed to be countered, he said.

Reverend Tut Yoa of All Nations Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia said the vaccine was important for “our lives and the lives of each other”.

“It’s our responsibility to look after each other.

“I encourage people to come out and have the vaccine to protect their loved ones.”

Greater Dandenong mayor Angela Long attended in a show of support. She’d received the AstraZeneca jab two weeks earlier with no side-effects, she said.

“We’ll never get rid of this pandemic unless everyone is vaccinated.”

Councillor Sean O’Reilly bared his singlet to get vaccinated on his 50th birthday.

The Sandown hub was large, conveniently located and with “the best views” of any vaccination centre in Australia, he said.

Monash Health’s head of infection prevention Professor Rhonda Stuart said the spacious venue had capacity to flex up to another 60 booths.

Helping animals to thrive

By Danielle Kutchel Whenever Stephanie Davies leaves the RSPCA’s Burwood shelter for the day, she knows she’s made a positive contribution with her time.

The volunteer of three years, who lives in the City of Casey, is just one of many who keep the RSPCA’s shelters running smoothly.

Ms Davies said she first began volunteering with the animal welfare organisation after her

own cat passed away.

Originally she joined the foster care program, which helped her recover from her loss.

Keen to get more involved, she joined up as a volunteer.

Her days are varied, but ultimately her work takes some of the pressure off the paid employees and allows them to get on with the jobs they need to do, she explained.

She might start the day by feeding and cleaning the rabbits and guinea pigs, before feeding

the chickens and cleaning the paddocks.

She also takes the cats and rabbits for walks on their harnesses.

“It’s been very fun for me to have a handson role. It’s rewarding and the animals make me laugh,” Ms Davies said.

“I go home thinking I’ve done something good with my time.”

Over the years she said she has picked up lots of skills along the way, from general confidence-building to working as part of a team

and learning more about animal behaviour.

Of course, working at the RSPCA isn’t without its challenges, and Ms Davies said there have been some sad stories.

“It helps to remember that all of the animals that end up there are the lucky ones,” she said.

“They’ve come to the right place for help, and it only gets better from here.”

City’s top citizen

By Danielle Kutchel A tireless champion for African and CALD communities has been named Greater Dandenong’s Citizen of the Year.

Selba Luka, founder of Afri-Aus Care, received the award at an invite-only event at Springvale City Hall on Tuesday 26 January.

She admitted the award was a total shock, but a welcome one, and dedicated it to the community, staff, volunteers, supporters and

sponsors of Afri-Aus Care.

Born in Malawi, Ms Luka often says her heart is in South Sudan as she works closely with the south-eastern South Sudanese community.

Afri-Aus Care was born of her experiences when she arrived in Australia, where she experienced difficulties and hardship in her first years in the country.

The not-for-profit provides mental health

support, outreach and skills development for members of the African and CALD communities.

It works closely with youth offenders, providing them with a pathway out of these behaviours and into a more positive contribution to society. During the pandemic for example, ex-offenders helped create food hampers and deliver these to the most vulnerable in society.

Afri-Aus Care also works with “the mamas“,

African women who are new to Australia and need assistance to find employment and learn English. Many of these women are survivors of domestic abuse, and Afri-Aus Care provides mental health support too as they build a new life.

Speaking at the Australia Day ceremony, Ms Luka said she was honoured to have received such a prestigious award.

“May we continue to be united. Dandenong is a great city to be,“ she said.

No final decision on pool

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council insists no final decision has been made on Doveton Pool in the Park’s fate despite allocating money for a “site re-design” in its 2021-’22 draft budget.

In its planned capital works, the council proposed $54,000 for fencing renewal and $30,000 for site re-design at the historic Olympic-size pool site.

The “re-design” item raised suspicion among Doveton-Eumemmerring Township Association members, who are among a community chorus of supporters of retaining the 53-year-old pool.

“When I saw the word ‘redesign’, I thought they’ve already made a decision,” DETA chair Sean Balfour said.

“They’re going to scrap the pool.”

In March, Casey faced a public outcry after a tabled council report recommended replacing the pool with parkland.

Its administrators put aside voting on the report. Instead the council launched a sevenweek $90,000 public consultation on the site’s future, which included pop-up stalls at the pool.

It was however labelled a “sham” by propool opponents. The survey and draft concept plan were skewed due to not including an option of retaining the pool, they said.

New features such as playgrounds, a water play, splash-pad, barbecues and a group shelter were options.

“On exit surveys, people have told me they had assumed the new features were complementing the pool, not replacing it,” Mr Balfour said.

“The council has spent money to convince us we don’t need a pool.”

A “vast majority” of locals steadfastly wanted the pool to stay, he said.

“I’ve spoken to hundreds while out with the petition. Only two people said they didn’t care.”

Casey city and asset planning manager Keri New said the council received more than 500 completed surveys during the consultation.

The surveys will be “analysed” before a fur-

ther report is prepared for the Council. Then Casey would decide on the future of the pool or the site more broadly, Ms New said.

Budget funding for a site re-design was to “further develop the findings that arise from the Draft Concept Plan consultation”, she said.

The $54,000 fencing allocation was for “general maintenance”.

In March, an earlier tabled council report recommended that an aquatic facility was not a priority.

Instead the site should address a shortage of district parkland in Doveton-Eumemmerring, it stated.

The report was based on expert assessments including visitor numbers, seasonal use, the pool’s age and operational and maintenance costs, the council stated at the time.

A Heritage Assessment and expert advice was commissioned to “ensure any proposed redevelopment is respectful of the site’s heritage”.

Company hires ‘Mr Right’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells There are employment vacancies aplenty – but not so for jobseekers with disabilities, says a WISE Employment case manager.

Souzan Asfour says despite a worker shortage, it was still hard to place her disabled clients.

Many bosses assume that her clients can’t safely work at a manufacturing environment.

They can’t work with “big machines”, can’t work on forklifts.

“I don’t think they’re prejudiced. But employers usually have a choice and they choose people who they perceive are without baggage or issues.

“We promote our clients - that they do have the skills. And they’re the ones that re-

ally want to work.”

Employers like Dandenong South-based Hume Doors and Timber play a critical role.

For 17 years, Hume has employed hundreds of WISE clients with disabilities.

One of them is Troy Wright, who has flourished since joining the manufacturer 12 months ago.

Indeed, Mr Wright proved to be ‘Mr Right’.

The 45-year-old broke down and cried when he finally landed a job, Ms Asfour said.

“I can’t believe the change in him from when we first placed him.

“He’s an awesome worker and just wants to fit in and have a sense of belonging.”

From the outset, WISE sat down with Mr Wright and Hume to discuss a support plan

on his needs and how he struggles working in large groups, reading emotions and intentions.

He started in warehouse stock-picking and successfully branched into three other facets of Hume’s operation, such as the assembly and installation of doors.

There are plenty of other success stories at Hume. Clients that have been promoted as managers, supervisors and accountants.

One of the keys was that WISE – a not-forprofit disability employment provider – had support services on hand.

They’ll upskill a client by helping them get a forklift license or other training.

Ms Asfour and her colleagues will also routinely check up on her client’s wellbeing and liaise with bosses if required.

“The advantage with our clients is that employers know who they’re getting. Rather than putting an ad in the paper and getting someone they don’t know.

“Employers have to be patient, tolerant and support the candidate to excel in their job.”

Hume operations manager Paul Harding says he’s employed hundreds from WISE since being convinced to “give them a try” 17 years ago.

All he asks for are workers with the right attitude and who don’t create a safety issue.

In Mr Wright’s case, he proved to have the right attitude – “head down, bum up” and turning up to work every day.

“We’d say to other employers to keep an open mind. You might get a better quality worker out of it.”

School’s budget upgrade

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong North Primary School has been allocated a $6 million upgrade in the recently announced State Budget 2021-’22.

The works include a new competitiongrade gymnasium and a modernized Block E. It is one of 52 Victorian schools upgraded in the budget.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she was “proud” that the school was getting the upgrade it had been calling for.

“Every child deserves a great classroom.”

The State Government also announced $900,000 towards the City of Greater Dandenong’s Springvale Boulevard project.

The project aims to attract new visitors by

modernising and beautifying the Springvale Road precinct.

It would “make this important local shopping strip safer, more accessible and more vibrant,” Keysborough MP Martin Pakula said.

Generally, the Government’s “caring” budget was headlined by a $3.8 billion boost to mental health services, including separate streams for infants/children and for young people.

According to the government, the Budget is a job creator. It will “support” an average of 38,000 jobs a year for the next four years.

It claims its school building program “supports” 3500 jobs, as well as creating 3000 mental-health workers and 6000 early-child educational roles.

The State Opposition says the $5.8 billion of new taxes and tax increases will “destroy” jobs.

“Victorians are paying the highest taxes in the country, and Dandenong cannot afford massive new tax increases which will destroy local jobs,” South Eastern Metropolitan Liberal MP Gordon Rich-Phillips said.

Dandenong’s manufacturing sector would be hard hit by steep rises in land tax and new payroll taxes, he said.

They will deter businesses from employing local people in Dandenong, which has higher than the state average unemployment rate.

“The Andrews Labor Government has no plan for Victoria’s economic recovery and is still playing catch-up from its covid failures.”

Some Budget highlights include the roll-

out of free public IVF and the launch of funded three-year-old kindergarten in 2022.

In the latter case, each pupil will have access to at least five hours a week of funded kinder, saving families an average of $1150.

By 2029, 15 hours of funded three-year-old kindergarten will be offered, the Government stated.

The network of specialist family violence courts will expand to Dandenong.

The court is designed to be less daunting for family violence victim-survivors with separate entrances and exits, safe waiting areas and dedicated space for children.

Dandenong’s Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC) will also be upgraded.

Rates increase as Casey focuses on pandemic repair

By Danielle Kutchel Casey Council has released its draft budget for 2021-22, with plenty of spending to help the community in its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The draft budget, released at a council meeting on Tuesday 18 May, totals $569.7 million, with a $421.17 million operational budget and a record $148.5 million Capital Works Program (CWP).

The operational budget is an increase on last year’s $391.1 million, while the CWP is an increase on the $131.6 million seen in 2020-21.

But the increases in spending will come at a cost to ratepayers, with rates set to increase in line with the state cap of 1.5 per cent.

In the draft budget report, chair of administrators Noelene Duff stressed that hardship options are available for those who struggle to meet the increased cost, including deferments and waivers of interest and charges.

The rate increase is applied across the City of Casey, meaning ratepayers may not see an exact 1.5 per cent rise on their bill.

Administrator Cameron Boardman said the decision to raise rates had not been taken lightly, and had been preceded by “line by line 10 STAR JOURNAL

analysis” of the budget to consider alternatives.

“If we don’t, it will create an unnecessary, undue and complicated financial pressure on the organisation for future budgets.

“We don’t want to be in a situation that in the future, if we do need to readjust our finances, that the hit would be heavier than doing it on this occasion.”

He said he wanted to give the community a “solemn and sincere understanding” that council officers had been challenged to find alternatives that did not pass on the full rate increase – but that ultimately, the cost of Casey’s “ongoing liabilities and obligations” and quality of service made the rise necessary.

A number of key projects are set to be completed over the next 12 months in Casey.

These include the $22.5 million early works package for Minta Farm, which will see the construction of Bells Road from Grices Road to O’Shea Road, including associated intersections.

Clyde Recreation Reserve will be constructed at a cost of $17.75 million, while $15 million has been budgeted for the Casey Fields Soccer Stage two works.

The budget also includes $8.12 million towards the Cranbourne West Sport and Recre-

ation Reserve, $2 million for a new family and community centre in Clyde, $1.49 million to commence the upgrade of Pearcedale Recreation Reserve Football/Cricket Pavilion and $1.5 million to commence the upgrade of the football and netball pavilion in Edwin Flack Recreation Reserve, Berwick.

The draft budget was one of a number of strategic documents released by the council at its May meeting, including the new long-term council vision and the council’s four-year plan.

Those documents are now up for community review, with feedback invited until early June before the documents are formally adopted.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff PSM said she was proud to endorse the draft strategic documents, which are the culmination of extensive community engagement over the last 12 months through the Shape Your City program.

“Our council has been focused on making sure we listen to our community, and the themes identified through Shape Your City are now reflected in different elements of our draft Council Plan and draft Long-Term Community Vision,” Ms Duff said.

“This new Council Plan and Community Vi-

sion are the first to be developed under our administration, and I am proud of the hard work, effort and community input that has contributed to these.

“I hope they instil a sense of pride within our community.”

City of Casey acting CEO James Collins echoed these comments and added that the community will see some great outcomes from the draft budget.

“This year’s increased Capital Works Program will be focused on completing some major projects from 2020/21, but it will also see the commencement of some exciting new projects, from major recreation and sporting reserves, to roads and community hubs,” Mr Collins said.

The Draft Council Plan 2021-2025, Draft Long-Term Community Vision 2031 and Draft Budget 2021/22 will be open for consultation until Wednesday 2 June 2021, after which time the council will consider all of the feedback and then formally adopt the documents at a council meeting on 29 June 2021.

Bashing dad put to work

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An Endeavour Hills father who beat his 12-year-old daughter to the point of her vomiting has been put to community work.

The 44-year-old pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to assault and recklessly causing injury for striking his daughter repeatedly with a belt across her neck and shoulders at home on 12 January.

The man dragged his daughter into the living room, removed his belt and struck her with it multiple times.

Despite pleas from his wife to stop, he continued until the girl vomited on the floor.

The next day, a clinic’s doctor treated the daughter’s swollen and bruised neck and shoulders but didn’t seem to perceive an assault.

Remarkably the doctor recorded the injury as a ‘Ry neck’ – presumably a “wry neck” – and recommended “negative energy exercises”.

His consultation notes did not record how the injury occurred. According to police, the victim didn’t tell him of the circumstances.

Two months later, on 11 March, child protection officers were notified and took the girl to Endeavour Hills Police Station to report the matter.

The next day, Dandenong Magistrates’

Court issued a final intervention order to protect the victims.

After his arrest, the man told police he only threatened to strike his daughter with a belt as a “disciplinary measure”.

The man also pleaded guilty to repeatedly threatening to strike his wife with a wooden stake stored in the corner of the master bedroom.

According to a police statement, the man exhibited controlling behaviours such as forcing his wife to sleep on the floor.

The wife told police that she’d fled the house many times in fear of her safety.

In a police statement, the man denied threatening to strike his wife. He kept the stake for protection against his brothers-in-law, he claimed.

In sentencing on 19 May, magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the offences were “extraordinarily serious”.

She noted the man’s guilty plea spared his daughter from giving evidence in court, as well as his limited criminal history.

The man was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order including supervision as well as behavioural and parenting programs.

He will temporarily relocate from NSW to Victoria to perform 100 hours of unpaid work.

A Springvale gym manager will be hoping to clock a massive 100 kilometres on the treadmill for charity.

Karen Lilley, of Springvale Anytime Fitness, is gearing up to cover between 65 and 100 kilometres for the national Tread As One event.

About $650,000 are hoped to be raised across Australia for suicide-prevention charity R U OK? “I have a very positive outlook on life myself, but to see and experience firsthand how the harder times in life can get to people and drive them to something more serious is devastating.”

Ms Lilley says exercise is a positive boost to mental health. As is talking with and being part of a community at the gym club.

“It’s OK not to be OK but as long as we can provide a place to feel like you belong, a place where you can talk to someone, hopefully we have made a positive impact to someone’s life.”

The charity says there’s ‘65,000 reasons to run’ in the event - with 65,000 Australians estimated to attempt suicide each year.

R U OK? chief executive Katherine Newton said regular gym visits within a gym community could provide an “important sense of belonging”.

Lyndale students wing it as they achieve a soaring feat To say a solid left wing has been built at Lyndale Secondary College is not a political statement.

Rather, it’s literally an impressive feat of aeronautics by the college’s high-flying aviation students.

They were one of five schools in Australia – the only in Victoria - taking part in a national Highflyers project that collectively assembles an RV-12 aircraft.

Covid of course created some turbulence to the project.

But on 21 May, students, staff, their Sport Aircraft Association of Australia mentors and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams looked on the gleaming product.

The wing is set for delivery to the SAAA headquarters in Narromine, NSW. There the finished aircraft is assembled from the components made at each of the five schools.

Eventually the plane will fly south, giving Lyndale’s students the chance to fly their handiwork.

“Trying something new and different inspired me to join the plane build,” Lyndale student Sophea said.

“You will never know if you’ll need this experience in the future, if you want to be an engineer or something.”

During a deep Covid lockdown from July 2020, the students were off-campus but the project wasn’t entirely grounded.

Students learnt theory while online with their SAAA mentors, pilots and authors.

Back at school in 2021, they finally got down to construction. On went the wing skins, the wiring and the riveting.

“I am passionate about planes and I wanted to know how they actually work from the inside and out,” student Harshmeet said.

“I have learnt knowledge of how planes work and how they are able to operate.”

SAAA members were impressed with the students’ resilience.

“Some of them might go on to build an aircraft, maybe not many, maybe only 1 per cent of all of them might end up in the aviation industry,” mentor Brian said of the students.

“But that doesn’t matter.

“They could be in a workshop somewhere else, they might be in charge of a team planning something, understanding documentation ... there’s all sorts of openings.”

Supervisor warned

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A trucking supervisor was warned hours before one of his drivers fatally ploughed into four police officers that the driver was not fit to drive, a court has heard.

Simiona Tuteru, 49, of the Lyndhurst-based Connect Logistics is facing a committal hearing for the police officers’ manslaughter.

Connect employee Stephen Harrison allegedly texted Mr Tuteru about 1.38pm on 22 April 2020 with concerns over the driver Mohinder Bajwa Singh’s “mental state”, according to phone records tendered to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

“He told me he was not in a good spot.

“He was putting trucks on wrong docks and had a sleep on the way back from Thomastown and slept in.

“I don’t think he should be driving. I told him to go to doctors straight away.”

Mr Harrison texted that he’d leave it to Mr Tuteru to contact the truckie “if he hasn’t rang already”.

Mr Tuteru texted back: “Will speak to him.”

About 4.30pm, Mr Harrison received a text which stated Singh would do a delivery to Thomastown.

“He will let me know how he feels after,“ the message said.

Little more than an hour later, Singh drove into two police vehicles and Richard Pusey’s Porsche parked in the Eastern Freeway emergency lane in Kew. He fatally struck down Victoria Police officers Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Joshua Prestney.

In April, Singh, of Cranbourne, was jailed for up to 22 years for culpable driving causing the officers’ deaths as well as trafficking meth, cannabis and 1,4-butanediol.

Concerns about Mohinder Singh’s fitness to drive were raised at his workplace in Abbotts Road. was sleep-deprived and impaired by meth use at the time.

Mr Harrison told Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 18 May that Singh’s parking in the wrong docks was “one of those mistakes” and “wasn’t out of the ordinary”.

In a police statement, Mr Harrison said he spoke to a “confused” looking Singh who he believed had domestic “personal issues” after a shift earlier that morning.

He didn’t suspect Singh had drug issues.

“What had happened through the night, there was no alarm bells for me.”

He told police that he advised Singh to “go straight home and to call a doctor” as well as to call Mr Tuteru.

“Because of the conversation that morning I thought that maybe it would be better if he had a couple of days off and caught up on his sleep,” he said in the police statement.

Ingham’s acting supervisor Kerry Haitana, who had rang Mr Harrison about Singh driving to the wrong docks, testified to the court on 19 May.

Mr Haitana said Singh had “no problems” in successfully reversing his truck during difficult parking manoeuvres that morning but “lacked focus”.

“He did everything right as far as driving goes.

“Alarm bells were ringing in my head about his mental state.”

Singh was “vague” when Mr Haitana asked him why the experienced, regular driver went to the wrong dock.

The offences include causing or encouraging Singh to drive and failing to take reasonable steps to prevent Singh driving a “fatigue regulated heavy vehicle” while knowing the driver was “fatigued, impaired by drugs and unfit to drive”.

In April, Singh, of Cranbourne, was jailed for up to 22 years for culpable driving causing the officers’ deaths as well as trafficking meth, cannabis and 1,4-butanediol. The committal hearing is ongoing. Singh is expected to testify as a prosecution witness in early June.

Mother and son reunited When Jackie Paull first started in aged care 25 years ago, she couldn’t predict the impact her work would have on others. But after reuniting aged care resident, Peter Adams, with his mother earlier this year, there’s no doubt her role can be truly life changing.

As the Admissions Coordinator at Regis Dandenong North, it was Jackie who first met Peter when he visited in search of care for his mother. After recovering from a fall, Shirley needed additional support in a residential home, which would mark a significant lifestyle change for both herself and her son. Having lived together for over 60 years, Peter and Shirley faced the prospect of spending much more time apart. But with assistance from Jackie, frequent visits from Peter, and a bunch of fresh flowers on arrival, the transition was made easier.

Over the coming weeks, communication between Peter and Shirley mysteriously ceased, and Jackie knew her help was needed. “They were practically joined at the hip, so Shirley was really missing Peter, and it didn’t make sense that he wasn’t

around” said Jackie. Eventually ascertaining that Peter had been admitted to another residential care home after a decline in his health, Jackie put everything in place to bring him together with his mother. As a result of Jackie’s determined efforts, Peter was able to move across within a couple of short weeks - a process that might normally take much longer. “I remember the day Peter arrived in April,” said Jackie. “Shirley was sitting at the front desk waiting for him. There were hugs, kisses, and tears of joy,” she said.

Reflecting on her time in the aged care industry, Jackie explains that above all else, relationships are the most important factor.

“When you walk into a Home, you can really tell when people care,” she says. For Peter and Shirley, that genuine care and compassion enabled them to settle back into the life they know and love. “Now that they’re together, they’re at home again,” smiles Jackie. “Being able to do that for people is why I love what I do”, she says.

Panthers talent prospers

By Tyler Lewis The Dandenong Cricket Club girls are reigning supreme in Victorian Cricket.

After pulling off one of the more stunning grand final victories, the Panthers have added more names to its already impressive list of Victorian contracted players.

The Panthers now have six players contracted with Victoria.

Panthers women’s coach Andy Christie is happy with how things are travelling and proud of what his group has achieved.

“I think the picture looks pretty good at the moment,” he said.

“The club is going from strength to strength in terms of how it runs, operates and invests in the girls.

“It gives them the best opportunity to get to the next level and Tiana (Atkinson) is a great example of that.

“She has put in a mountain of work in the last 18 months and thoroughly deserves the opportunity she has been given, it is fantastic,” Christie said.

It has been a memorable turn around for Dandenong, turning a bottom side into one with a Una Paisley Medallist, a premiership outfit and now a destination club for potential state cricketers of the future.

“12 months ago, we finished bottom of the table and questions were asked on ‘how are we going to progress and show that we are improving’,” he said.

“We are really fortunate that the group of players, the committee and everyone down at the club are supportive of the way the coaching group want to go about things.

“It goes to show if you are patient and trust in the process, results will follow. We were lucky this year, things went our way, to get the win in that grand final, it was an amazing day,” Christie said.

As the Panthers are known for its successful academy programs, the flurry of Dandenong cricketers inside the walls of Cricket Victoria shows a lot of girls in the area that it is possible to make it to the state level.

“It just shows that it is accessible,” Christie said.

“Getting to that next level, putting in the work to play in the Big Bash, the players coming through now are so aspirational to get to that.

“I think the girls coming through now see

“Backing in her own way of scoring, putting her up the top of the order was something that allowed her to do that and play her game.

“I think if she gets an opportunity, she won’t see any barriers in terms of playing at a next level, she will approach it the same way.

“She will play her own game; it’ll be excit-

ing, and I look forward to seeing it.”

The Panthers will return to training in about a month’s time, ready to experience being the hunted, rather than the hunter.

By Tyler Lewis AROUND THE GROUNDS SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 7 The same old broken record sung again on Saturday, as Springvale Districts not only recorded a mammoth win, but the win was led by dynamite spearhead Matt Wetering.

The Demons dined out on Murrumbeena, none more so than Wetering, who kicked 10.

Wetering has now kicked a staggering 39 goals in eight matches after the 18.11 (119) to 3.5 (23) win.

Keysborough, meanwhile, held on in a cliff-hanger over Skye.

The Burra – who were wayward in front of goal – held a two-goal lead at the final change, lost the last stanza, but held on to a 9.15 (69) to 9.10 (64) win.

Jonathon Huntington was named best afield for the travelling side, while big man James Holland-Burch competed tremendously for Skye.

Hampton Park is slowly building nicely as it gears up for a premiership tilt this season.

In its way is the evergreen Springvale Districts, but the Redbacks seem to find a way even against adversity.

On the weekend, it faced local rivals Hampton.

er-placed home side, the Redbacks surged home after a slow start 11.10 (76) to 4.11 (41).

Kyle Hendy slotted four, while Liam Myatt was at his hard-nosed best.

DIVISION 3 ROUND 7 A fast-finishing Doveton Eagles have fallen just short in its clash with South Mornington.

The Eagles displayed it can be a wellmechanized outfit when it gets its brand of footy tumbling.

Trailing by 39 points at the final break, the Eagles slammed home five majors in the last – the same it had up until then – but the Tigers margin was just too great.

It wasn’t the result the Eagles were after, but the 13.13 (91) to 10.11 (71) defeat has a lot more to take out than meets the eye.

Taylor Smith was impressive for the Eagles, as was Jaryd Sally who is stringing together some neat form.

Endeavour Hills, meanwhile, has dropped a game it had in its grasp over the top seeded Black Rock.

The Hills lead the home side at the first and final change, before dropping a sevenpoint lead at the final interval.

Sam McLean did everything he could for his side, but the ladder leading Black Rock outfit ultimately hobbled over the line, 9.12 (66) to 9.9 (63).

The Hills currently sit in fifth on the ladder, but only by percentage from third. So, a win yesterday over Black Rock would have done wonders for the Endeavour Hills’ finals aspirations.

It was a shoot-out at Strathaird Reserve between Narre South Saints and Clayton.

The first quarter was not a time to stand in the line at the canteen, with 14 goals piled on in that stanza alone.

While the Saints piled on eight majors in the opening half, it could only manage two across the second and third.

The quiet middle period led to a sevengoal deficit for the Saints, but it got the ball rolling again in the last, swinging home with a wet sail.

But the margin was just too great, with the Saints falling 15.7 (97) to 17.15 (117).

After his sublime first game last week, Steve Sigeti did it again, kicking five majors.

Sigeti’s performance quite simply summed up his sides performance, as he kicked three in the opening term and two in the last.

The Bulls got off to a sweltering start, kicking 6.1 in the first term.

From then on, the men in blue and gold just did what was necessary to come away with the 13.12 (90) to 10.11 (71) win.

Dandy local derby awaits

By Tyler Lewis NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE VIC MEN Dandenong Thunder matches this year haven’t been short of entertainment.

And Friday was no exception.

The Thunder travelled to take on Green Gully and after 67 minutes, it wasn’t going to plan.

After fighting out a nil all opening half, the Thunder conceded two goals in the space of two minutes, with the second finding the back of the net in the 67th minute.

But as they have done all year, the Thunder found a way, albeit just as late as usual.

Nahuel Bonada found the back of the net in the 83rd, but then was in the right spot again, equalizing in the 87th – collecting a brace and securing a draw that at the time looked like a win.

The brace from Bonada contributed to his ten goals so far this season in 13 matches.

The draw doesn’t help the Thunder in leaping Green Gully, with both teams sitting nineth and tenth at this stage of the season.

Dandenong City, meanwhile, had another difficult night when it took on eight seeded Port Melbourne.

City weren’t able to hit the scoreboard, while the Sharks found the back of the net twice, through goals in the 44th and 65th minutes.

There was a card in each ten-minute block from the 40th minute until the final whistle.

A Super-Saturday clean sweep for the Rangers

By David Nagel The confidence of the Dandenong Rangers men’s team continues to grow after a second-consecutive win in the NBL-1 South division – this time against Hobart at Dandong Stadium on Saturday night.

The Rangers, who scored their first win of the season last Sunday against the Melbourne Tigers, were at it again, overcoming a strong third quarter from the Chargers to end with a 105-86 victory in front of an excited home crowd.

The Rangers had the better of a tough first quarter, leading 25-23, before extending the margin to 53-46 at half time.

But the Chargers fought back through the efforts of Jonathon Mines – who ended the night with 34 points – to trail by just four, 74-70, with a period left to play.

The Rangers then produced an impressive display of all-court basketball, restricting the Chargers to just 16 points for the quarter while piling on 31 points of their own.

The depth of the Rangers really flustered the Chargers in the final term, with six players hitting the scoreboard on a regular basis.

Sean Macdonald led the scoring for the home side with 23 points, with Oliver Hayes-Brown continuing his great form of late with a stunning 19-point, 16-rebound, double-double.

Marley Biyendolo (12 points), Mason Perry (11), Declan Soukup (10) and Lawson Eales (10) also hit crucial point when they were needed most.

Perry was perfect from downtown, hitting three from three from long range.

The Rangers – who jump to 14th on the table with a 2-6 record – have the ideal opportunity to make it three wins from their last three games when they host 17thplaced Sandringham (1 and 7) at Dandenong Stadium this Sunday. All the great action starts at 2pm.

The Dandenong Rangers women’s team kickstarted what would turn out to be a great night for the club with a 93-72 victory over Hobart in the earlier 6pm game.

Things didn’t look good for the Rangers in the early stages, trailing by eight at the first break and 11 at half time, before the local girls rallied to produce a stunning second-half performance.

The Rangers took the lead at three-quarter time after an explosive third period that saw the locals outscore Hobart 23 points to eight. That 69-65 lead would blow out in the final stanza with the Rangers powering their way to a 24-7 last term.

The 21-point victory was built on several key performances, with Emilee Harmon scoring 26 points, to go with seven rebounds, while Dallas Loughridge was also instrumental with 25 points of her own.

The contribution of Sherry Glennie (15 points) was also important for the winners, while Elly Morgan, Alison Downie and Amy Baum all made good use of some lengthy court time.

The Rangers, now with a 3-5 record, hit the court at Dandenong Stadium at highnoon this Sunday to take on a 4-3 Sandringham.

Tiggerlong Tonk takes them down in Harrison Dawson

By Michael Floyd After taking 10 attempts to claim a breakthrough Group-1 victory in the Perth Cup, Victorian superstar Tiggerlong Tonk has captured his second in the space of a month after edging out Catch The Thief in a thrilling HarrisonDawson Final (515m) at Sandown Park.

It’s the second time in three years that young Anakie trainer Correy Grenfell, 27, has completed the Perth Cup/Harrison-Dawson double, after his 2018/19 Australian Greyhound of the Year Orson Allen also won both races in 2019.

Remarkably, it’s the third year running the winner of the Perth Cup has returned to Victoria to claim the Harrison-Dawson, with illfated champion Simon Told Helen achieving the feat last year.

Having feared Tiggerlong Tonk may retire without a Group-1 success on his resume, Grenfell said he felt relief after seeing his prolific son of 2015 Melbourne Cup hero Dyna Double One and Tiggerlong Dot go bang, bang in quick succession.

“Orson Allen did exactly the same double and to do it again means the world,” said a delighted Grenfell.

“We’re obviously doing something right so we’ll keep doing it!”

After running third in 2020, Tiggerlong Tonk earned a second crack at the Harrison-Dawson with a scorching 29.10sec heat victory, which was bettered only by champion Shima Shine’s airborne 29.00sec.

While Tiggerlong Tonk’s run of unsuitable draws in G1 finals continued when he was allocated box eight for Thursday night’s final, he was the $3.60 second elect, with Shima Shine the $2.60 favourite from two.

Catch The Thief ($10.20) held out expected leader Fernando Bluey ($8.20) in the run to the first turn, as Tiggerlong Tonk moved across into second, while Shima Shine blew the start and was never a factor.

From that point Catch The Thief and Tiggerlong Tonk staged a memorable two-greyhound duel, with Tiggerlong Tonk driving clear in the final bounds to score by 1.37 lengths in 29.23sec.

“That was just a good contest between him and Catch The Thief. He had to bring his best to win and he did,” said Grenfell.

“He was always going to dig deep and keep coming. He’s got a great will to win.”

The $100,000 winner’s purse elevated Tiggerlong Tonk’s prizemoney total to $676,015 and with five minor placings at G1 level that figure could have been significantly higher.

Grenfell will now give the son of Dyna Double One a brief rest before sending him to Albion Park for the upcoming Group-1 Brisbane Cup (520m).

“At this stage we’d be silly to retire him. He’s flying. He’s going as good as he was when he was 18 months old and he’ll tell us when it’s time,” Grenfell said.

Tiggerlong Tonk is owned and bred by Michael Finn at Wagga Wagga in NSW and that’s where Grenfell and wife Samantha are eyeing off their next feature celebration, boasting four runners in Friday night’s Graeme Hull Memorial Final.

Earlier in the night, Qwara Bale took out the $145,000 Group 1 Sapphire Crown (515m), while four heats of the RSN Sandown Cup (715m) were also conducted, with the heats won by Stanley Road (41.77sec), Tyler Durden
