Rats run amuck

Rats and mice have come out to play in Greater Dandenong’s showcase park.

Visitors have been alarmed by packs of rats and mice in Dandenong Park, boldly scurrying in the River Rest playground and picnic area even in broad daylight.

The rodents burrowing under pathways and in drains seem unbothered by human visitors.

In plain sight and in close proximity, they forage in grasses and under bins, benches and water fountains.

Greater Dandenong Council has responded with a “high frequency cleansing program” to control vermin numbers.

The strategy is to eliminate food sources that attract vermin, Greater Dandenong engineering director Paul Kearsley told a council

meeting on 10 May. “The program includes twice daily litter collection, barbecue and toilet cleansing and daily litter bin collection.

“We will continue to monitor the issue and adjust our programs to meet the volume of litter and waste generated within park’s picnic area and playground.”

Former councillor Matthew Kirwan had

raised the issue in public question time. He observed at least five rodents feeding off food scraps in the picnic area.

Mr Kirwan said the scourge risked deterring visitors from the revamped park just as it was earning rave reviews.

“I’m conscious that the council has invested so much in upgrading Dandenong Park.

Rick McPherson of the Dandenong Northbased Premium Pest Control told Star Journal that Melbourne had been hit with its biggest rodent plague for 10 years.

Mr McPherson says he’s getting up to 20 vermin-related callouts a week.

“Our biggest are rats, mice and wasps. We’ve also seen the biggest spider invasion this year, and millipedes are on the march.

“It’s like the apocalypse is coming,” he joked.

It was particularly unusual to see great numbers of rats brazenly running around in the middle of the day, Mr McPherson said.

Populations had soared particularly in the past three months It may be due to either the cool, wet weather, litter, untended lawns or earthworks in housing estates, Mr McPherson said.

Or perhaps while humans were away during Covid lockdown, the rats had come out to play.

Mr McPherson said the most effective response to the park’s rat colony was poison bait. It might involve closing the park for a bait treatment on a monthly basis.

Bait would need to be placed in lockable boxes affixed to the bottom of bins to protect children and pets.

But even lockable boxes were at risk of being tampered with by visitors.

Greater Dandenong Council didn’t respond to whether poison bait was an option.

Mr Kearsley told the council meeting that it would continue the issue and “adjust our programs to met the volumes of litter and waste generated”.

Drug court praise

By Cam Lucadou-Wells For ‘Aaron’, the presence of three judges may have boded ill for him.

But the Dandenong Drug Court ‘graduate’ was instead feted by a captive audience of state Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, Victoria’s Chief Magistrate Lisa Hannan and magistrates Susan Wakeling and Suzanne Cameron.

In the eyes of the justice system, Aaron is a “superstar” who made the most of a golden chance to recover from the lowest depths.

And the Drug Court is being hailed as a success story. A more cost-effective option than prison that delivers lower re-offending rates.

At the launch of the Drug Court’s new offices in Dandenong, he deservedly took centre stage.

Yet a year ago, a drug addicted Aaron faced possible jail after being caught with 28 grams ice and an unlicensed gun.

He was instead offered a drug treatment order by Dandenong Drug Court magistrate Gerard Bryant.

So began an innovative carrot-and-stick approach.

Aaron faced a packed schedule of daily appointments, weekly reviews and three urine tests a week.

He was given every possible support such as stable housing, drug rehab, counselling, job and life skills coaching and social opportunities.

But if he was to misstep, there was the looming threat of short, sharp jail stints or being exited from the program.

Mr Bryant told Aaron at the start he had to be resilient. That it was a marathon of up to two years, not a sprint, Aaron recalls.

Aaron kept up the pace, with no stumbles.

He had been using drugs for years - and spi-

Afer one year of Drug Court, he is graduating after only one year, expecting a child with his “beautiful partner” and looking at becoming an alcohol-and-drug counsellor.

“I grabbed the order with both hands. It takes a bit of resilience and a bit of courage.

“Drug Court gives you back the values you lost in the past.”

So far this year, Aaron is one of 11 who have graduated from the court’s therapeutic program of ‘tough love’, also known as drug treatment orders.

A 2015 evaluation found the court achieved a 31 per cent reduction in re-offending in the first 12 months after a DTO. That included a 90 per cent reduction in trafficking.

“It’s something that works,” deputy chief magistrate Susan Wakeling says.

For candidates who want to “make change in their lives”, the drug court provides them the supports and activities to do it.

“It’s safer for the community to put people in drug court than in jail.”

Melbourne magistrate Suzanne Cameron said the “refreshing” program’s impact was “immeasurable”.

It tackled the source of the participants’ criminal offending – which was drug addiction.

After its successful pilot in Dandenong, the drug court has expanded to Melbourne CBD. The State Government will invest $35 million on installing the court in Shepparton and Ballarat with a pilot in the County Court of Victoria.

Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes said the program was expanding because “we know that Drug Courts work – reducing recidivism, supporting rehabilitation and helping people get their lives back on track”.

Ms Williams said the community had benefited from the program for close to 20 years.

“I’m delighted that this new, purpose-built facility will ensure this continues into the future.”

TEETH MISSING?

The Federal Government has announced $166,280 to help refugee and CALD job seekers in South East Melbourne.

However, asylum seekers seem to have been excluded from the package, says a leading advocate.

Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre will support 64 culturally and linguistically diverse participants with accredited training and job pathways in aged care and disability services.

Employment Minister Stuart Robert said the “invaluable” support targeted 15 regions with high unemployment due to Covid-19.

Asylum Seekers Resource Centre innovation hub director Abiola Ajemotobi said she was unsure how much funding would help more than 2000 people seeking asylum in the Dandenong region.

“Providing a resource for 64 people of CALD background in one of the most multicultural communities in Australia is grossly insufficient.“ Ms Ajemotobi said asylum seekers, especially families and children, were excluded from vital safety nets. Some are neither allowed to work nor receiving welfare.

“They are facing a national humanitarian crisis of poverty.

“People need permanent visas and access to support so they can stop relying on charity to survive, and get on their feet, train, work and contribute to the economy like millions of refugees and migrants before them.”

Safe lender expands The Good Money lending program is expanding online.

The initiative, with a shopfront in central Dandenong, offers no-interest loans and financial advice – as a safe alternative to payday lenders and loan sharks.

In the State Budget, Good Money hubs will receive $14.6 million to expand into phonebased and digital services.

The enhanced Good Money service is expected to deliver 11,500 no-interest loans over four years, helping around 25,000 Victorians with a low-income.

Volunteering is a chance to ‘reconnect’, says Dandenong Evening VIEW Club president Anne Maslin.

Charity tea to honour Kon

Ms Giannopoulos cared for him full-time at home over those gruelling final years.

“You don’t want to have them suffer. It was sad to see him struggle.

“He refused to go to palliative care. He died with dignity at home.”

On 13 June, Ms Giannopoulos will host morning tea for four close friends who she regularly meets for coffee in Oakleigh.

In the long run, Ms Giannopoulos hopes to launch a fundraiser for IPF research.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is hardly a household name as a deadly, cruel chronic illness.

Lisa Giannopoulos, of Springvale South, will be hosting an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event on 13 June, raising money for cancer research, prevention and support.

She’ll do so while remembering loved ones affected by cancer. In Greater Dandenong, 685 a year are diagnosed with cancer.

But top of her mind is her dead husband Kon who died of IPF on New Years Eve 2020.

The morning tea would be an apt way to remember 69-year-old Kon, who was a strong and active volunteer for Lions Club and Springvale Benevolent Society.

“He always wanted to give back to the community,” Ms Giannopoulos said.

“He helped people in every way he could.”

During 43 years’ marriage, they raised four children with 11 grandchildren. The couple ran a successful rubbish removal business until recently.

Kon was also a talented songwriter and musician, though he never wanted to be famous, Ms Giannopoulos said.

IPF isn’t a cancer but a little-known affliction that hardens the lungs and kills sufferers within five years. Doctors had no idea of how Kon got sick nor how to cure him.

Over the past three years, he took a trial medication to slow his deterioration. Towards the end, he applied for euthanasia but succumbed during a regular “episode”.

“He had these episodes when his lungs didn’t get enough air or oxygen.

“Every time it happened I would bring him back and wake him up from a black-out. I’d turn up the oxygen or call an ambulance.”

The end was a “relief” for Kon, who fought every inch to retain his independence. His

Injection room not Dandy

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong has been placed on the agenda for a safe injection facility – despite the State Government ruling out such centres beyond Melbourne CBD. Reason Party leader Fiona Patten nominated Dandenong, Footscray and St Kilda for further facilities beyond the controversial North Richmond centre and a second proposed for Melbourne CBD. Ms Patten told 3AW on 11 May that the three suburban locations were in line with ambulance call-outs for overdoses.

Opening more injection rooms would improve neighbourhood amenity, she said.

“Residents are trying to give CPR for people dying in carports and front lawns.”

The North Richmond medically-supervised injection room has saved lives, taken pressure off ambulance callouts and emergency departments, according to a state health department panel in 2020.

In its first 18 months, the MSIR safely managed 3200 overdoses in 119,000 visits. It saved at least 21 lives, the report found.

However, the room’s placement next to a primary school and homes has been strongly opposed by residents.

MSIR Residents Action Committee (MRAC) claims the location – the busiest injection room in Australia - has been a “beacon” for drug users across Melbourne as well as drugdealers.

MRAC member Jonathan Lowe said centres should go in hospitals or industrial areas – not homes and schools.

“Injecting shouldn’t be around children and shouldn’t be around residents.”

He said dispersing the injection rooms to other sites may help solve issues in North Richmond.

But warned that Dandenong might become

“It’s really destroyed our neighbourhood,” Mr Lowe says.

“It’s put a line down the middle of a great community – between people who are for and people are against.”

The worst impact was the rise of anti-social behaviour – people high on drugs, swearing, fighting who “don’t care about the neighbourhood”, Mr Lowe said.

Expression of Interest

His young children are too scared of being “verbally assaulted” to go on outings to Victoria Street restaurants.

“Data shows that crime is up, street injecting is up, unsociable behaviour up, and all to the detriment of the residents.”

The Police Association of Victoria also reported an increase of crime in the area.

Ms Patten said having five injection rooms would avoid “overloading” North Richmond.

She cited a 1999 report that showed the same

suburbs were hotspots for heroin overdoses.

“And 20 years later they still are.

“Not putting one in has not changed that.

But putting one in will save lives and will actually help people on a path to recovery.”

In response, Acting Premier James Merlino has reportedly said the Government had no plans beyond “one further injecting room” in Melbourne CBD. In recent times, anti-social issues and drug paraphenalia at North Richmond had reduced.

VCAT blocks development

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The state’s planning tribunal has ruled a “bulky” three-storey apartment block doesn’t suit the northern “edge” of central Dandenong.

The developer WCL Development Pty Ltd appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after Greater Dandenong Council rejected its plans on the vacant 804-squaremetre block at 66 Herbert Street.

VCAT senior member Bill Sibonis ruled on 29 April that the proposal’s “robust” mass was inappropriate at the “edge of a substantial change area”.

There was no dispute that increased densi-

ty housing of up to four storeys was permitted in the Residential Growth Zone 2, Mr Sibonis stated.

However the “large and bulky” structure with shallow setbacks and expanses of “unrelieved wall planes” didn’t fit in with the “incremental change” area on the opposite side of the street.

“A more tempered built form is required,” Mr Sibonis stated.

“Greater setbacks from the side boundaries are required, with commensurate increases in the opportunity for meaningful landscaping, including trees.”

The proposed bamboo plants up to five me-

tres tall on the perimeter, along with two trees and large shrubs on an “indent” to the building’s east were “largely ineffective”.

Mr Sidonis said the boundary setbacks of up to 62 centimetres were too narrow for canopy trees or landscaping to soften the building’s bulk.

“The failure to provide sufficient landscaping is a significant shortcoming of the proposal.

“It will not contribute to the identified future character, which refers to high quality landscaping to protect the amenity of adjoining properties and contribute to landscape character.”

Two previous applications for a three-storey building on the site were made in 2011 and 2014.

The first was refused by the council, the second was issued a permit by VCAT but had since expired.

IN BRIEF Fake police scam nets $16K Phone-scammers impersonating Dandenong police officers have fleeced more than $16,000 in the past week.

Victoria Police issued a “scam alert” warning on Facebook in response to the “alarming trend”.

The victims had been rang by people impersonating police, with the Dandenong police station number on display.

They were instructed to repay large sums to the Australian Taxation Office by buying $500 gift cards in multiple locations.

They were then told to reveal the cards’ codes.

“This is becoming an alarming trend,” police warned.

“Never make payments through gift card purchases.”

Police stated that the Australian Government and legitimate businesses didn’t demand payment with iTunes, Google Pay, Steam or other gift cards.

Speeding driver’s bad ‘brake’ A driver claimed he was testing his brakes after being allegedly detected speeding 66 km/h over the speed limit in Lynbrook.

Casey Highway Patrol officers say the car was travelling 146 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on South Gippsland Highway on Sunday 9 May. The driver’s car was intercepted by police and then impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1005.

He is expected to be charged on summons with driving at dangerous speed.

Servo ‘burglar’ caught

A 42-year-old man has been arrested at a burglary at a service station in Heatherton Road, Springvale South.

The Dandenong man was believed to have smashed a glass window and rummaged through the counter about 2am on Tuesday 11 May, police say.

A neighbour, who heard smashing glass, alerted emergency services.

Police, assisted by the Critical Incident Response Team and Dog Squad, cordoned off the area and called out for the man to come out of the store.

He was taken to hospital under police guard to treat an injury sustained while trying to break in, police say.

Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are expected to interview the man in relation to burglary, criminal damage and going equipped to steal.

Tributes flow for ‘Macca’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells One of Dandenong’s giants Ian McDonald - a twice-mayor who involved himself in nearly every walk of life - has been farewelled.

At a funeral service at St James Anglican Church on 14 May, eulogists listed the many ways that ‘Macca’ served and loved Dandenong and its people.

He died on 7 May, aged 81.

Mr McDonald – a father of four, ‘poppy’ to seven grandchildren - was remembered as a “true statesman”.

A quiet achiever that never boasted of his prolific accomplishments in civics, sports, arts and charities.

“They don’t make them like Ian anymore,” friend Grissel Walmaggia told the service.

As a councillor for City of Dandenong, Mr McDonald never missed a council meeting in 11 years. He was mayor in 1986 and 1990.

Plaques bear his name on 12 of the city’s landmarks including Palm Plaza and Drum Theatre.

After his term, one of his proudest campaigns was to salvage the ‘Dandy Pig’ sign from storage and place it atop of Dandenong Market.

Last year, Mr McDonald was proudly in-

ducted as one of the city’s Living Treasures.

He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal and the Australian Centenary Medal for his decades of enthusiastic service.

He was a life member of Dandenong Cricket Club, and of Dandenong and District Cricket Association.

Over 60 years, he was coach and mentor to many. He played in more than 400 matches of turf cricket, and instilled success at North Dandenong, Dandenong West and St Mary’s cricket clubs.

Mr McDonald also played a huge role in the arts’ prominence in Dandenong. Walker Street gallery would not have existed if not for him, it was said.

He was life-member of City of Greater Dandenong Band, a long-time MC for Dandenong’s Carols by Candleight and organiser of Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth.

Fittingly, daughter Cheryl sang two tributes at the service, including You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Mr McDonald’s charity work was also peerless.

A board-member of Dandenong Hospital board, a lead organiser of Red Shield Appeal, Odyssey House, Oz Child, St James church fair

and Dandenong Australia Day events, a Justice of the Peace, and convener of 40 charity fundraising dinners.

Growing up in Catani, Mr McDonald settled in Dandenong where he worked for International Harvesters, GMH and as an insurance agent for 40 years.

He met his wife-to-be Patricia in the supper room at a Dandenong Town Hall dance.

At the time, he’d just had his nose straightened by a doctor after it was broken during football. He sported two black eyes.

Pat went up to him and asked him: “What happened to you?”

He returned the following week but the popular Pat’s dance-card was full. He schemed successfully with mates to ensure no one else got the last dance with her.

They were married for 57 years until Pat’s death in 2018.

In the meantime, he’d shown interest in playing for Collingwood in the VFL. Pat told him that would be the end of their relationship, life friend Sue Cotton told the service.

He followed Pat in following Hawthorn Football Club.

They raised their four children Cheryl, Andrew, Paul and Fiona at their Sabine Avenue home in Dandenong North.

They later moved into Pultney Street for the rest of their lives.

‘Macca’ was fond of a practical joke, and the provider of many hours of “fun and laughs” at his Rosebud holiday home each Christmas.

A supportive father and ‘poppy’ with a soft smile and gentle voice, Mr McDonald had a “very competitive” streak.

He “hated losing” – whether it was sport, charity fundraising or a game of table-tennis with his kids, his grandson Jordan Dalgleish told the service.

Colin Tannahill said ‘Macca’ had a “specific laugh” after he got someone back with a joke.

The life-coach, sounding board and mate would “hold court” with his story-telling. He had a “peripheral sense” of what was happening in Dandenong.

He knew how to have a “quiet word or two to make people feeling everything was OK”, Mr Tannahill said.

“I would have liked to play under him as a coach.”

Mr McDonald was fallen by a major stroke in July 2020, moving to Mercy Place aged care in December. He died peacefully in his sleep with daughter Fiona at his side on 7 May.

‘King of Happy Hour’ reigns

His weekly singalongs have earned him the name ‘Happy Hour King’ at Arcare Keysborough aged care home.

The ex-civil engineer is also state finalist in an inaugural national talent quest held by the Arcare aged-care home group.

He will be in the running for the $250 national title as well as a state prize and the CEO’s Choice award.

Mr Fernandez has routinely taken to the microphone in times of need. He brightened the home’s dreary days of Covid lockdown.

He also came to the rescue when guest entertainers needed a singer for Ceylon Biala at a Sri Lankan party.

“Neville stepped up and performed; the staff were dressed up and it was like a wild dance party erupted,” an Arcare spokesperson said.

Mr Fernandez, who is daily visited by his wife who lives nearby, was a former choir master at St Anthony’s Church in Noble Park.

The 20-strong choir would perform at church and weddings.

“I fondly remember how at Christmas the whole choir would travel in the bus to different venues.”

His singing and piano-playing were first nurtured by his father, who was choir master at Mater Dolorosa Church in Madras, India.

He took piano exams in front of assessors from Trinity College in London. The certificates would be later mailed to his Madras home from England.

“My father always taught me that singing is not just for your own enjoyment but also to make others happy.

“I enjoy bringing joy to the community.”

Autumn’s season of soul

By Helen Heath OAM Executive Officer Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong Of late I have been really struck by the enormous beauty of our city’s autumn leaves: trees with red leaves capping lower green leaves yet to turn, golden nugget leaves reflecting the sun and orange-brown leaves waiting their turn to flutter to the ground.

Brilliant hues against a grey sky or rich tones when the sky is, more occasionally now, so blue.

Pondering on this keen desire to soak up all autumn’s hues, the realisation has struck me that this longing has been stoked by the bleakness of the recent past.

March seems for me to mark a year since a

HOPE pandemic began ravaging the world.

It still continues to do so in many other places including our near neighbours.

Stanley Horowitz has said that “winter is an etching, spring a water colour, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of it all”.

A ‘mosaic’ says it all as life’s bits and pieces, regular and irregular, continue to toss us

around like tumbling leaves on a breezy day.

But as autumn leaves eventually settle to earth, embed and transform, and winter presses forward, we can hibernate inwards for a time and reflect on the different tinges that come - welcome and unwelcome - into our lives.

This can be a season to find contentment, wherever we are, by taking notice of what we have and are.

As spring and summer have nurtured our ‘trees’, now, like the shedding of leaves, we may find beauty in letting things, no longer needed, go.

Leaves are the last burn of autumn before the covering of winter dampens the flame for a time.

Thich Nhat Hanh writes about the falling leaf still being part of the tree as it falls because it returns to nourish the ground from which it came.

In shedding things no longer needed, we create space to, slowly and over time, welcome and nourish new growth - fragile green shoots that eventually and persistently issue forth from dull-grey woody sticks.

As the charm of autumn succumbs to the contrasting beauty of winter, may an ancient Irish blessing give us pause for thought: “May the blessings of light be upon you, Light without and light within, And in all your comings and goings, May you ever have a kindly greeting From them you meet along the road.”

Facing realities The walls could be said to have eyes at an exhibition at Connection Arts Space in Dandenong.

Or perhaps in artist SA Vandort’s work, his portraits are typically missing eyes.

The Faces Within features two emerging artists Mr Vandort and Adam Joshua Finlayson with very contrasting styles.

Mr Vandort draws clean-lined portraits with an absence of eyes.

After years of spray paints, charcoal and graffiti, his style evolved after taking up tattooing in 2017.

He then turned his hand to “neo traditional” portraits that feature in The Faces Within.

Meanwhile, Mr Finlayson’s heavy oil paintings capture his moods, hallucinations and vivid, distorted imaginations while suffering from schizoaffective disorder.

The exhibition is at Connection Arts Space, 1-9 Walker Street, Dandenong on Tuesdays-Fridays 12pm-3pm from 18 May3 June.

Bag thief is sentenced While on bail, he was accused of breaking into a Noble Park house while an occupant was asleep on the morning of 2 December, stealing a laptop and a wallet.

He was also accused of using stolen bank cards to buy scratch cards, cigarettes and booze.

Ramazan, who was spending his first time in remand, told the court that he wanted to reform and “make my family and mother happy”.

“For six years, drugs … made me like this.”

In sentencing, Ms Dootjes took into account Ramazan’s good prospects of rehabilitation, his youth and limited criminal history.

His drug addiction, which was said to be linked to his crimes, would be tackled as part of a community corrections order.

“I was told by your lawyer you wanted to do something (about your addiction).”

Ramazan was jailed for two months, followed by a 12-month corrections order including drug treatment and supervision.

His jail term included 52 days spent in presentence custody - meaning he’s eligible for release in days.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Noble Park man has been sentenced for snatching elderly women’s handbags as he rode unlicensed aboard a scooter in a Dandenong Plaza car park.

Ali Ramazan, 23, pleaded guilty to a string of meth-fueled offences at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court including two ride-away thefts and an aggravated burglary while on bail.

On 14 May, Magistrate Suzette Dootjes said the targeting of vulnerable elderly women was especially serious and concerning.

It would have had a lasting impact on the victims, she noted.

In the first theft, Ramazan allegedly rode up to a 73-year-old pushing a shopping trolley and snatched her bag in the McCrae Street car park on 21 August.

According to police, the victim fell to the ground as she tried to grab Ramazan, who fled the scene with her handbag and the $1000 cash inside.

She was not seriously injured.

Three days later, Ramazan and a pillion passenger allegedly targeted a 70-year-old in the same car park, police told the court.

Ramazan snatched the bag with $40 cash and bank cards from her walker as they rode past, police claimed.

The scooter ran a red light at Walker and McCrae streets, rode into Palm Plaza and ran another red light at Walker and Lonsdale streets as the pair fled towards Doveton.

Ramazan was accused of stealing from two cars after his arrest, including a parked car in Lois Lane, Dandenong, in October.

Saving lives over a cuppa

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A naval veteran and ex-RSL president has taken the tragic issue of veterans suicide into his own hands.

Naval Association of Australia state president Gordon Murray OAM is inviting naval veterans to join in a drop-in coffee and a “yack” at Noble Park RSL each Friday morning.

There’s a “special bond” between naval vets, but no regular social gathering for naval vets.

And the recently announced federal Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide showed why it might be important.

“I couldn’t stand by and do nothing,” the ex-Noble Park RSL president of 16 years said.

“I want to see if I can get younger people together.

“A lot of them get their information online but the direct contact is better.”

Mr Murray also hopes to point veterans to Noble Park RSL’s support services team, who can help with pension applications.

A similar meet-up of Vietnam veterans at Noble Park RSL had been a success-story, Mr Murray said.

“If I can help one or two people and if they’ve got problems, at least I’ve done something.”

Mr Murray lost his sight as a result of six years’ service up until 1971. In 1995, he retired from work and was certified blind.

Along with his wife of 56 years, Mr Murray says the RSL has always had his back.

“The RSL has done that much for me.

They helped get pensions for me, got me through the TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated veterans criteria).

“They’re a great bunch of blokes.”

He was an able seaman weapons mechanic on minesweepers and frigates in the Indonesia Confrontation and Vietnam War. He’s known comrades from his era suffer PTSD and take their own lives. But the recent reports of suicides in the ranks hit him hard.

“It really gets to me when young people … they don’t tell you, they don’t say there’s anything wrong with them.

“This is a chance to get them together and talk. It will be there for them if they want.”

The City of Casey’s strategic nous has been recognised in the Municipal Association of Victoria’s 2021 MAV Technology National Awards for Excellence.

The council picked up an award for its Technology @ Casey – 2020 Strategic Plan in the Strategy and Planning Achievement of the Year category.

Casey’s chair of administrators, Noelene Duff, said the council was “delighted” with the win.

“We were delighted to be recognised for leadership in the smart city and innovation space at the MAV Technology Awards,” she said.

The City of Casey was also highly commended for its Smart Casey Launchpad in the Smart City Achievement of the Year category.

“The Smart Casey Launchpad was developed through engagement with our community,” Ms Duff said.

“Council is committed to learning how smart city initiatives and infrastructure, such as technology, data and innovation can unlock new opportunities and help us to overcome persistent challenges, as we continue to build a sustainable future for our community.”

The City of Casey is currently working on

creating the Smart City and Innovation Community Reference Group.

Ms Duff said the group is “designed to enhance participation opportunities, drive innovation and test emerging technology with members of Casey’s community.”

“The reference group is about more than just technology, so I encourage community members from a range of diverse backgrounds, including local community groups, education, sustainability, start-ups, businesses and other key local industries to find out more and apply via Casey Conversations,” she said.

The awards were announced at the MAV Technology Champions of Change conference, held on 27-29 April.

The conference focused on transforming local government to serve and support communities in the Covid-era.

Topics included emerging technologies, digital leadership, new and collaborative ways of working, AI, business transformation, data governance, customer experience, smart cities and digital access – as well as navigating the massive cultural change that all this will bring.

Call for a boost to volunteering rates

Big thanks AMES Australia tutor Wayne Veal is given lofty respect by his refugee English students.

He’s known as ‘Babai’ – which means ‘grandfather in Dari – by his appreciative Afghan learners.

For the past seven years, Mr Veal has volunteered as a tutor at the migrant and refugee settlement agency in Dandenong.

It’s proved a positive and worthwhile role in retirement. The best thing he’s ever done, he says.

“I did a bit of volunteering initially in people’s homes. I just wanted to help and I had some free time.

“You usually know when something is right for you and this is just so right for me. The people are beautiful. For me it’s been fantastic.”

On the eve of National Volunteer Week, Mr Veal was given a Certificate of Appreciation by AMES Australia.

A survey commissioned by AMES found its volunteers believed they themselves benefited from helping others.

It improved physical and mental health, built personal satisfaction and connections. And for Mr Veal, he found his “life partner” through volunteering at AMES. “It’s been a wonderful experience for me.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Greater Dandenong councillor has called for ways to lift volunteering rates in the municipality, which are about half the state average.

Councillor Eden Foster – who used to volunteer in the Young Vinnies youth branch of St Vincent de Paul Society - said the council needed a formal strategy to boost numbers.

According to the 2016 census, 11.9 per cent of Greater Dandenong residents volunteered.

The Victorian average is 20.9 per cent.

“I feel we need to do more as a Council to encourage residents to volunteer, given the research shows that altruism and volunteering has significant benefits, positive health benefits and positive well-being benefits for the volunteer themselves,” Cr Foster told a council meeting on 26 April.

Greater Dandenong Council suspended most volunteering activities in 2020 due to Covid-19.

Recently the council’s Community Care services reported only 50 per cent of volunteers had returned since the pandemic.

There’s now a push for volunteers to reconnect with their groups and causes as part of National Volunteer Week from 17 May. As part of the event, the council has recognised its more than 200 volunteers across 15 programs, including Meals on Wheels, Home Library service, English tutoring and youth services.

Mayor Angela Long said volunteers were the “backbone” of the Greater Dandenong’s community. ““This year’s theme is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine, quite appropriate when you think about a year when many of us have experienced increased loneliness and isolation,” Cr Long said.

Cr Eden Foster has called for ways to boost volunteerism in Greater Dandenong.

“Perhaps one positive that has come from the pandemic is the way community has come together.

“The health crisis has certainly changed our community, but it has also highlighted the role community connections play in our everyday lives.”

Cr Long commended volunteers who were willing to resume roles as soon as it was safe.

“Such loyalty and commitment reflects the

compassion and resilience of our volunteer teams and we welcome them back with great appreciation.”

Hope for diabetes sufferers as research grants awarded Victorian’s living with diabetes may have new ways of treating and preventing their condition in the future thanks to new project funding.

The Diabetes Australia Research Program in Victoria has awarded 19 research projects funding to develop ways to reduce serious complications of diabetes. Diabetes Australia CEO Professor Greg Johnson said he hopes the $1.1 million grant will help the 1.8 million Australians who have diabetes.

“This year we mark the 100-year anniversary since the discovery of insulin and look forward to the next discovery that transforms the lives of people with diabetes,” Professor Johnson said.

“Diabetes research has improved the quality of life of people living with all types of diabetes and we hope the research announced today can lead to more breakthroughs.”

Each project will receive up to $60,000

in funding. Some of the projects include researching a protein released by the liver to create a long-lasting protein injection, research into treatment for people who have undergone kidney transplants and heart surgery and research into the effectiveness of resistant starch, found in foods like whole grains and legumes.

These research projects will be undertaken at some of Victoria’s leading research institu-

tions including Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Monash University, Deakin University, University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Professor Johnson said these grants will help support the prevention, management and hopefully a cure for people with diabetes and gives them hope of not having to live with the disease.

Jail for ‘horrible mistake’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A middle-aged docker who supplied meth to a 15-year-old girl and filmed their sex acts has been jailed.

Jason Francis Sims, 48, pleaded guilty at the County Court of Victoria to five charges including sexually penetrating a child under 16, supplying drugs to a child and producing child abuse material.

The single father met the girl on an adult dating app Skout in May 2020.

She messaged her true age and that she was living in Department of Health and Human Services residential care.

Sims’ initial reaction revealed he knew she was 15, sentencing judge Justin Hennebery noted on 11 May. “Sorry age might be a number to you but I’m not a paedophile and have a son that age.

But despite this rebuff, Sims “pursued” her soon afterwards.

He arranged to meet in a Dandenong motel where he smoked ice with the victim and filmed sexual activity.

Days later, Sims arranged an Uber to pick up the girl up from her residential unit and take her to his Bentleigh home.

He again supplied ‘ice’, showing her how to ‘hot rail’ by pre-heating the glass pipe for a “better” hit.

Their sexual encounters and drug-taking over several days were graphically filmed on his and her phones.

A worker at a residential care unit discovered the videos on the girl’s phone.

phone, uploaded them to an office computer and then a USB which was handed to police.

After receiving a notice banning any contact with the girl, Sims warned her to dump her phone and get a ‘burner’ phone.

Police raided his home, seizing meth and GHB that Sims initially said were brought there by the girl.

In a police interview, he initially denied knowing the victim was under 16. He said he couldn’t remember the motel encounter and other incriminating evidence.

Sims blamed his faulty memory on drug use, which he said began a year earlier. He conceded he made a “horrible mistake”.

Judge Hannebery accepted Sims didn’t intend to pick up a child when he went on Skout.

But Sims soon became aware his date was “underage”.

His pursuit of her for sex was aggravated by

providing her meth - a “dangerous and addictive substance”.

The victim, who didn’t offer a police statement or victim impact statement, was additionally vulnerable being in government “resi“ care.

Exploited child victims suffered “enormous” physical and psychological harm longterm and must be protected by the courts, Judge Hannebery said.

Sexually penetrating a child under 16 and sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 carried ‘standard sentences’ of six years and four years jail respectively.

In mitigation, the judge noted Sims’ substantial rehab efforts after the event, lack of priors, good work history and family support.

Sims was jailed for up to five-and-a-half years, with a three-year non-parole period.

He must report as a registered sexual offender for life.

Colourful celebration honouring Punjabi mothers

By Gabriella Payne There were smiles all around at the Lynbrook Community Centre on Saturday 8 May, as Punjabi families from all across Casey came together to celebrate Mother’s Day in a funfilled, colourful fashion.

Organised by the Sikh Australian Support for Family Violence group (SASFV), the day was a huge success and saw almost 200 people come along to celebrate the wonderful women and mothers’ in their lives.

Jasbir Singh Suropada, the director of the SASFV, said that it was great to see many generations enjoying the delicious food and a wide range of events on the day.

“There was a great turn out of grandmothers, mothers, children and some fathers,” Mr Singh Suropada said.

“The families had great fun and were so happy, they were already asking when we would be holding another family event.”

Mr Singh Suropada said that folk songs and cultural dancing were featured as part of the event - and there was even a dance off between mothers and daughters, which got everyone’s feet tapping!

“The objective of the program was to promote healthy families and healthy relationships,” he said.

“After the lockdown, post-Covid, it’s good for families to come together and have some fun and laughter.”

Mr Singh Suropada said that those in attendance enjoyed a large Mother’s Day cake, lucky-dip prizes, snacks and the wide range of decorations, which were all kindly sponsored by well wishers in the community.

A few special guests also came along to take part in the celebrations, with Nicky Turner and Kim Sammon, the new and emerging communities liaison officers from Victoria Police, making an appearance.

All in all it was a fabulous celebration paying tribute to just some of the many incredible mothers in Casey, and Mr Singh Suropada said that the SASFV and the wider community couldn’t wait for the next one.

The Mother’s Day celebrations at the Lyndhurst Community Centre were a multi-generational affair, and everyone enjoyed the cake.

Drug-dealer flings gun

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police were “clearly unwelcome” at a Dandenong home garage on Christmas Eve 2019 where they unexpectedly visited three men armed and smoking ice, a Victorian County Court judge stated.

One of the trio was Ilija Stojanovic, then 30, who stood up from a table and tried to walk past police, Judge Rosemary Carlin said at a sentencing hearing on 5 May. The accused threw a loaded five-shot revolver towards a mate. The gun bounced off the mate’s chest and landed on a car bonnet.

Police seized a stolen Audi coupe with stolen NSW plates, a gold imitation handgun, mobile phones, $2190 cash and 15.8 grams of meth in deal bags at the table.

On the car port wall was a ledger of drug transactions.

Stojanovic resisted police and was struck, handcuffed and arrested.

At the time, Stojanovic had been released from jail less than a month earlier for car theft and trafficking meth. He was on a corrections order.

Stojanovic pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person possessing a firearm and an imitation firearm, drug trafficking, theft, handling stolen goods and resisting police.

It was his third offence of illegally possessing firearms, his fifth for car theft.

“Your possession of a loaded revolver in cir-

cumstances where you were in fact trafficking in drugs is particularly serious because of the obvious risk that the gun might end up being used to cause injury or death.”

Judge Carlin noted his disadvantaged background and mental health issues, including PTSD. Growing up in the Bosnian War, Stojanovic was exposed to “constant bombing, gunfire and danger”. His parents were imprisoned in war camps.

“By the time you were seven or eight you knew how to handle a gun”.

The family settled as refugees in Hampton Park, unable to speak English and little possessions.

In his 20’s, Stojanovic descended into serious drug abuse, particularly ‘ice’. He had periods of abstinence after residential drug rehab and while on parole, Judge Carlin noted.

“You knew that taking ice would put you back into the criminal milieu and likely lead to further offending and yet you chose to do it.

“I am not persuaded that you are truly remorseful for your crimes, as opposed to being sorry that you were caught.”

The accused’s prospects for rehabilitation were “bleak” but not “beyond hope”.

He was jailed for up to four years, including a non-parole period of two years, eight months.

The terms included 498 days in pre-sentence detention.

$500K for Noble Park Streetscaping and a future all-abilities playground in Noble Park have received a $500,000 State grant.

Under the Noble Park Revitalisation Project, the funds will go towards improved amenities in Douglas Street ($310,000) and the playground in Ross Reserve ($190,000).

Greater Dandenong Council has allocated $585,000 and $180,000 to the respective projects.

The all-abilities playground caters for all children and adults, including those with disabilities. It will have spaces for nature play, sensory play and open grass areas.

Works have started and are expected to finish in July.

South Eastern Metropolitan MP Lee Talarmis said the projects put “Noble Park people front and centre”.

“Iit’s an important step in the community’s steady recovery from the effects of the pandemic.”

Noble Park is one of eight suburbs targeted by the state’s $21 million Suburban Revitalisation Program.

Each has a ‘revitalisation board’.

Suburban Development Minister Shaun Leane said “revitalisation projects right across Melbourne are improving livability, bringing communities together and boosting local economies”.

Forever Fest aims high with astronaut as special guest A candidate astronaut for the Mars One spacecolony will be ‘making a difference’ closer to home.

Dianne McGrath will appear via ZOOM as ambassador for City of Greater Dandenong’s Forever Fest on May 22-30.

She’ll feature at the launch and each day of the nine-day climate-change and sustainability festival, which will be a mix of on-site and online content.

Ms McGrath was ranked in the top-10 candidates – out of 200,000 applicants - for the proposed one-way trip to settle Mars.

At the launch at Springvale Community Hub, there will be onsite activities such as preloved clothes swaps, zero-waste cooking classes and a workshop on building a bee hotel.

A plastic-free party, with 200 keep cups and giveaways will be available.

The festival will also feature key speakers including ABC’s War on Waste executive producer Jodi Boylan, celebrity chef Alice Zaslavsky, Sustainability Collective founder Charlotte Connell and ClimateForce founder Barney Swan.

Each day of the festival, Mr Swan will plant 100 trees in the Daintree rainforest in north Queensland.

The 900 trees help protect biodiversity and reduce run-off to the Great Barrier Reef.

Mayor Angela Long said the festival would provide thought-provoking content and easy tips on how the community can make a difference.

“Each day will focus on the eight themes of our Climate Emergency Strategy, which was prepared in response to Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency in January 2020,” Cr Long said.

“We’re encouraging people to bring along their pre-loved clothes for a swap market, we’ll have a smoothie bike on-site, waste-free cooking classes, tree planting and many other wonderful initiatives for the community to get involved in.”

Cr Long said the festival was an important part of the strategy’s aim. It would help engage the community towards Greater Dandenong becoming a net-zero carbon emission city.

Business awards finalists

By Danielle Kutchel Twelve businesses from across the City of Casey have been recognised as finalists in the 2021 Casey Business Awards.

The finalists, across four award categories, were announced at a business breakfast held on Thursday 13 May at Bunjil Place.

They were chosen from a strong field of 81 entries in the first awards ceremony since Covid.

Many attendees commented that it was the first time they had attended such a function since before the pandemic - making it a special morning for all local businesses who have weathered the Covid storm.

Simon Griffiths, founder and CEO of Who Gives A Crap, gave an inspiring and humourous speech recounting his own experience founding a small business, and how it has grown over the years to occupy a special place in the market and homes of customers - especially during the toilet paper shortage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He shared his top tips for businesses, including encouraging local business owners to think about their purpose and impact on the world.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff congratulated all the finalists and wished them luck for the awards, with winners to be revealed at a gala event on Friday 25 June at Bunjil Place.

“These awards are an opportunity for council to celebrate and recognise the outstanding achievements and contribution of Casey’s vibrant and diverse business community,” Ms Duff said.

“It’s great to be able to give recognition to those innovative local businesses who are excelling in their fields, and at the same time, give businesses the opportunity to come together to learn from one another and celebrate each other’s successes.”

Judge Kathy Racunica, who is head of campus at Federation University Berwick, acknowledged the tough task the judging panel had in choosing the finalists.

“I was thrilled to be involved as a judge in this year’s awards and was highly impressed with the calibre of applications,” Ms Racunica said.

“As applications were assessed, myself and the judging panel were struck by the resilience, leadership and innovation demonstrated by Casey’s business community and congratulate all those who took part.”

The Casey Business Awards are just one of a suite of measures introduced by the City of Casey to assist local businesses.

All participants have also been offered free business mentoring and are invited to participate in valuable business development workshops to build on their strengths and identify opportunities for growth and improvement.

Magnificent Mac on fire

By Tyler Lewis Mac Andrew’s atomic rise continues to grow, as the Dandenong Stingrays product is turning more heads in each game he plays.

Standing at over 200cm with the capabilities to move like a midfielder, AFL clubs would be silly not to be impressed by the Berwick junior that was born in Egypt.

Andrew – a Melbourne Next Generation Academy product – has emerged as one of the more exciting talents in the 2021 draft class, and it has come from hard-work over a long period.

“I have been trying to get my fitness up so I can cover the ground a lot more,” Andrew said.

“And (I’ve been working on) the fundamentals, I am trying to work on putting on size as well.

“Working on whatever I can to play at the highest level I can.

“I just feel like it is probably a lot easier to get a game when you can play multiple positions,” he said.

As a kid growing up, many prospects idolise the best the top flight has to offer, but Andrew is different, he is idolising a player many have compared to him – one he may match-up on in the future.

While also keeping his eyes firmly set on another goal, a goal the Dandenong Stingrays have been working on off the field.

“I love watching (Brodie) Grundy, but recently Nik Cox, he is 200cm as well, similar build,” he said.

“He has the ability to play wing, ruck, halfforward, half-back, I have been watching him a lot.

“I want to be the best player I can be, whether that be even at VFL or local level; but I more want to inspire other Sudanese kids to play footy as well.”

As he idolises one Nik Cox, he receives helpful guidance from a different Nick Cox each week. The latter, less surprised than some of Andrew’s mesmeric bolt in draft calculations.

“We get to see our players every day, when they finally get to a level where they stand out, it is not a surprise to us,” Cox said.

“It comes with time, 200cm, he has really good agility, he kicks the ball okay for a big bloke, he marks it well.

“The rise has not been something we didn’t see coming, but it has been a pleasing one.

“He has shown attributes that have got him to a level where people have taken notice.

“We see these kids day in day out, we see what they go through and it has been really good to see this happen to a really good person

Mac Andrew is on fire this year, he is one to watch. 237620 in and out of footy.

“The rise hasn’t been a complete shock for us, put it that way,” he said.

Cox was happy with the comparison to Nik Cox from Essendon and visions Andrew could potentially play a similar role.

“My namesake has changed the way 200cm players are playing now,” he said.

“I can see him playing that type of role, not just key position or ruck, he can play outside with his running ability.

“He is smart, he is understanding of roles within the team, at the next level he would be really versatile.

“His versatility is something I think going forward is going to be highlighted even more,” Cox said.

Since Nick Cox took the reins of the Dandenong Stingrays, he has really honed in on a mantra of leaving a better footballer than walking in a success.

The reality is, not everyone can be drafted.

But some can be drafted later on, some can go on to have wonderful careers at VFL level and some produce some tremendous careers at local level.

Despite the hype, Andrew mentioned he wanted to be the best footballer he can be, whichever level that may be. Comments that have made Cox proud, as it shows the Rays mantra is working.

“That is probably a thing throughout the NAB League that we have tried to promote is that there is different levels for everyone,” he said.

“Sometimes it is going to be at VFL level, we think the VFL is the best competition in Australia outside of the AFL. “You have to be a really good player to play VFL, to hear Mac say that, it means that we are not giving our players false hope of everyone getting to AFL level.

“Some might get an opportunity in the future, it is pleasing to hear and I think that goes to show what type of grounded person he is as well.”

Andrew wasn’t selected for the Casey Demons, despite putting in a great week on the track and attracting some well-deserved attention, but it definitely won’t halt him in his continuous improvement in 2021.

Shima Shine silences the doubters on the big stage

By Michael Floyd Shima Shine silenced any doubters with a stunning victory in a heat of the HarrisonDawson at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

On the coldest race night of 2021, Shima Shine defied the conditions to narrowly miss becoming the first dog to break the 29 second barrier twice, stopping the clock at 29.003 and powering into his seventh Group-1 final.

“He went good the boy,” said handler Korie Heinrich on behalf of trainer Andrea Dailly.

“I wasn’t expecting that but when the time came up I was pretty wrapped.”

While Shima Shine has long been regarded one of the country’s fastest greyhounds, his inconsistent box manners were cause for concern for some, especially with just one win from his five previous starts entering the series.

However, he soon put paid to any concerns, capitalising on a clean run to the post to carve out impressive splits to record the eighth fastest gallop ever at Sandown Park.

“You can’t win every race and he doesn’t,” continued Heinrich.

Shima Shine has now raced 32 times this season – the last 25 in top grade – for 18 wins, 10 of which in the fastest time of the night.

He’ll face a familiar foe in the final, with Tiggerlong Tonk proving that he is still very much at the top of his powers.

The recent Perth Cup winner ran a close-

up third in this race in 2020 and is set be a leading contender in the 2021 edition following his 29.10 heat win.

It was the 20th metropolitan win of Tiggerlong Tonk’s career and 11th at Sandown Park.

Remarkably, it was the fifth time that he’s gone sub-29.20, matching Hall of Famer Fernando Bale (2015 Harrison-Dawson winner) as the only two greyhounds to accomplish the feat.

Remarkably, this will be the ninth time the pair have met in a group-race final with Tiggerlong Tonk holding a 7-1 advantage in those finals – and is 3-0 in finals at Sandown Park.

Also winning their way through to next Thursday night’s $145,000 final was former Victorian Fire Legend (29.49) and Catch The Thief (29.52).

Earlier in the night, four heats of the Group-1 Sapphire Crown for female greyhounds were also run, with Warrnambool Cup winner Qwara Bale setting the time standard when running 29.28.

Rangers feel the touch of the Blues

By David Nagel The Dandenong Rangers have secured their first win of the NBL1 South season with a 9385 victory over Melbourne Tigers at MSAC on Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers looked in early trouble against the Tigers, who hit some great shots from downtown in the first quarter to take a handy lead.

But the Rangers gradually fought their way back into the contest, largely on the back of some terrific inside-rebounding work from Oliver Hayes-Brown who would finish the contest with 23 points and 16 impressive boards.

Riley Simmons (17 points), Sean Macdonald (13 points) and Marley Biyendolo (10 points) were others to trouble the Tigers in a hectic second half comeback.

The Sunday win came after the men’s and women’s teams were both rueing missed opportunities after hard-fought losses against the Frankston Blues on Saturday night.

The Dandenong Rangers women’s team gave local fans something to cheer about early before being over-run by ladder-leading Frankston, 78-63, on Saturday night.

The Rangers were quickly out of the blocks with early points to Tenaya Sooalo, Alison Downie and Elly Morgan leading to a 7-2 and then 13-8 scoreline, before the Blues gained the ascendency to lead by as much as 10 in the second period.

The Rangers looked like being overrun, but when Emilee Harmon nailed a jumper with four minutes left in the third, the home side had cut the margin back to two points.

But the Blues surged again, this time with no response from the Rangers who were brave against a high-quality opponent.

Harmon, Sooalo and Amy Baum competed strongly on the boards for the Rangers – combining for 22 rebounds – while Downie (16 points), Sooalo (13 points) and Harmon (12 points) were the main contributors at the offensive end of the court.

The Rangers, who sit in 14th position on the table with a 2-5 record, will look to turn things around against 15th-placed Hobart Chargers on Saturday night. The game starts at 6pm at Dandenong Stadium.

The Rangers’ men’s team looked set for a good night when it led the Blues by eight points – 72-64 – heading into the final period of play.

But the Rangers were powerless to stop a Blues’ onslaught in the final term with the visitors scoring 40-24 to run away with victory…104-96.

Hayes-Brown was sensational for the home side, scoring 31 points to go with 16 rebounds – including 11 defensive boards – while Macdonald scored 25 points to support the double-double of Hayes-Brown.

Declan Soukup (15 points) was the only other player to score double figures as the Rangers fell to 16th place on the table with a 1-6 record to their name.

The Rangers will look to bounce back to the winners list when they host Hobart Chargers at 8pm this Saturday.

Sigeti 11-goal haul

By Tyler Lewis SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 – ROUND 6 For Springvale Districts, Matt Wetering did it again.

The electrifying forward bagged out again, this time in his sides’ crushing victory over Hampton Park, 12.12 (84) to 5.9 (39).

Wetering kicked six of his sides 12, moving his season tally up to 23 from six matches.

Catching a lot of attention from those who count, Wetering could very well be making a dent on the league best and fairest as well as leading the competition’s goal kicking.

There was just one kick in it at the main break, before the Demons slammed home six goals to one in the second half.

For the Redbacks, Josh Dowling kicked two.

Springvale Districts now sit two wins clear atop of the ladder and are not showing any signs of dropping momentum.

Keysborough, meanwhile, have held off a fast-finishing Chelsea Heights outfit on Saturday, now bridging the gap between fifth and sixth.

The Burra are now a win clear of Chelsea Heights (sixth) with its win on the weekend, 7.5 (47) to 6.5 (41).

In a low scoring affair, the Demons trailed by two goals and change at the final interval.

Having its opportunities in front of goal, the Demons only managed 1.3, while holding the Burra to just one behind.

Tim Edwards kicked a crucial four, while Bradley Gilder also kicked two.

DIVISION 3 – ROUND 6 In his first match of the year, Steven Sigeti has kicked one of the more impressive hauls of the season in a best afield display.

Sigeti booted 11 in Narre South Saints big win over South Mornington, 19.12 (126) to 3.6 (24).

The Saints bolted out of the gates, kicking

seven unanswered goals to half-time.

The visiting side really dined out in the last term, kicking seven goals.

Jayden O’Brien didn’t kick the bag he kicked last week, but was yet again among the best on the ground.

An impressive final term from Endeavour Hills wasn’t enough to reconstruct the damage that was already done in the first three quarters.

Ashwood kicked five goals to nil in the second term and a further one unanswered in the third, a period of football that ultimately decided the outcome of the match.

Jack Purcell kicked another six majors, with 33 goals after six games, he really could make a dent on the now rarely seen century milestone.

Doveton Eagles, meanwhile, continue to work hard while having a difficult season on the scoreboard.

It has been well-documented that the Eagles are playing a bit light on cattle, but the group seems to be improving each week, despite being out of their depth in some areas of the game.

The 18.9 (117) to 6.11 (47) scoreboard against South Yarra doesn’t appeal as an improving side, but it has been pushing away while being up against it.

Jaryd Sally was again among the best players on the ground for the Eagles, while for the Lions, Tony Castrignano kicked a handful in a best on performance.

DIVISION 4 – ROUND 6 Hallam has squared its season ledger at 3-3, after a thrashing win over local rival Dandenong.

The Hawks needed not only to bank the four points, but also gain a well-needed percentage boost.

It came in spades for the home side, with a blistering eight goal to two opening half.

The Hawks could have easily put the cue in the rack after the main break, but with such a tight race for the top five, a strong percentage

does more good than bad.

Hallam came home with a wet sail in the big win, kicking an additional nine goals in the second half.

Kenneth Smart was tremendous for the Hawks, while Luke Rhodes also had a terrific day.

Dandenong, meanwhile, had a day it would hope to forget, going down in a bag way against Carrum-Patterson Lakes.

The Lions leaped out to a five goal to nil quarter time lead, before improving that to an 11 goal to three half time buffer.

It didn’t get much easier on the eye for the Dandenong faithful, with the home side kicking 13 goals to two in the second half on its way to the 24.22 (166) to 5.8 (38) win.

Rohan Bleeker kicked eight and Alex Wilson kicked five.

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE – ROUND 5 Despite wayward kicking, Noble Park has recorded yet another win, this time over Rowville.

The Bulls are flying, they are banking wins and seem to be a side a team wouldn’t want to play later on in the year.

The home side kicked 3.10 in the opening half, before finishing with 16 behinds.

The Bulls came away with a 6.16 (52) to 6.5 (41) win.

By no surprise to anyone, Kyle Martin and Jackson Sketcher were incredibly important to the Bulls win.

VFLW – ROUND 11 In a big day down at Casey Fields, the Demons have suffered a shock loss to Carlton.

The Demons got the jump, kicking three goals to nil in the opening term, but were only able to add two behinds from then on.

Casey Sherriff was the best player on the ground in her sides 3.7 (25) to 8.3 (51) defeat.

The Demons remain fourth on the ladder, but the loss on the weekend may be one the group regrets later on in the year.

A two minute onslaught delivers a Sulemani brace

Dandenong Thunder are up by a solitary goal when the referee calls injury time on.

The first 90 minutes was filled with drama, specifically the first 16.

Keagan Sheridan was given an instant red just three minutes into the game, reducing the Thunder to 10 men.

net in the 16th minute, breaking the deadlock and giving his side the lead.

All hard work looked to be undone when Altona Magic’s Troy Ruthven found the back of the net in the 91st minute, tying the scores and breaking the hearts of the Thunder faithful.

But what happened next was a sheer rollercoaster of emotion for the Dandenong outfit.

Less than a minute later, Ali Sulemani found the back of the net, edging the lead out again.

It didn’t stop there.

Sulemani scored yet again, less than a minute later.

He celebrated with the Dandenong faithful, who were a part of one of the most entertaining two minutes of soccer the National Premier League has to offer.

The Thunder went home 3-1 victors The town of Dandenong was on the right and wrong side of late winners across the weekend.

Dandenong City in the under-21 competition conceded an 87th minute goal, defying them of victory.

City broke ahead in the 67th minute, but conceded in the last gasp, suffering a 3-2 defeat.
