High-tech for safety The City of Casey has partnered with Monash University’s XYX Lab and digital consultancy CrowdSpot, to launch a new safety mapping tool for the local community.

The new online interactive map titled ‘YourGround’, will allow women and genderdiverse people in Casey who are 18 years and older, to share their perceptions of safety regarding Casey’s streets, parks, trails and recreational spaces.

The map will crowdsource the data, allowing users to anonymously drop a pin, tell a story or share an experience while out and about in the community.

The data will then provide the council with insights regarding how to make Casey’s public spaces more inclusive and equitable.

A 2019 Community Council for Australia report notes that 80 per cent of Australian men

feel safe while walking alone at night, while only 50 per cent of women say the same, demonstrating that movement and access is restricted for women and gender diverse people.

The City of Casey is committed to creating a safer community for all, while acknowledging that women and gender diverse groups are statistically the most vulnerable.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff encouraged all people in Casey to share their experiences and help shape a safer and more inclusive community for current and future generations.

“Council is committed to creating inclusive spaces for all and YourGround is a proactive tool to help us make positive change in our shared public spaces, especially for women and gender-diverse people,” she said.

“All experiences provide a valuable insight

into what we can do to improve safety and inclusivity in our community.”

The City of Casey is one of 15 Victorian Councils to partner on the YourGround project to address these barriers and make Victoria a safer and more inclusive space.

According to the council, the City of Casey’s commitment to gender equality and the prevention of family violence is demonstrated through its Family Violence Prevention Strategy 2018-2021 and Gender Equality Action Plan 2018-2021.

The council’s recently formed Gender Equality Task Force also aims to assist in ensuring that Casey’s policies, programs and services address the barriers to gender equality, and ensure equal representation.

Celebrating Cranbourne’s valued JPs

By Danielle Kutchel A special morning tea at Cranbourne Police Station has recognised the vital contributions of the suburb’s Justices of the Peace.

Justices of the Peace - JPs for short - have the power to witness various legal documents such as statutory declarations and affidavits, and can certify true copies of documents.

On Wednesday 21 April, Cranbourne police hosted a small group of Cranbourne JPs in a touching recognition of their work.

The guests were presented with certificates recognising their services for 100 or 200 visits to the document signing station, as well as certificates of appreciation.

lice Station, Nicole Spinks, said that the work of JPs helped police immensely, giving them some of their time back.

During Covid, with the police reception counter closed, the JPs continued to sign and witness documents by appointment and in a Covid-safe manner.

The morning tea also served as a bittersweet farewell from the police to the Justices as they take up residence in their new document signing station at Balla Balla Community Centre.

For the last 25 years the Cranbourne Police Station was home to a team of JPs who rostered on to sign and witness documents for the community.

Cranbourne’s JPs sign up to 40,000 documents annually, and since reopening to the

public on 18 January have already signed about 6000.

Peter Hooper, president of the Cranbourne Justices of the Peace Group, said that the move to Balla Balla Community Centre meant that residents of Cranbourne are able to have documents signed in a Covid-safe situation.

There are 3,750 Justices of the Peace in Victoria, and 98 document signing stations.

Each year, JPs witness around 2.3 million documents, helping more than 575,000 Victorians, freeing up more than 400 police men and women, and saving the community around $37 million.

School package not suspicious Reports of a suspicious package found at Tooradin Primary School have proven to be empty.

Concerned parents shared stories on Facebook on Friday 23 April of a possible suspicious package at the school, with reports of police in attendance.

Victoria Police confirmed they conducted a safety check at the school on Bayview Road after a container was located on the school grounds about 8.30am.

The Bomb Response Unit attended and determined the container was non-suspicious.

Vehicle theft ends in crash Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested two youths and two men in a stolen vehicle in Narre Warren.

On Wednesday 21 April, police were patrolling Princes Highway when they spotted the stolen white Toyota Camry bearing false plates just before 9pm.

It’s alleged the driver then conducted a Uturn to travel west along the Princes Highway before failing to give way at the intersection of Fleetwood Drive and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, colliding with another vehicle travelling south along Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

Officers arrested the four occupants at the scene.

The driver, an 18-year-old Epping man, was charged with theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and unlicensed driving.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later today.

An 18-year-old Hallam man was charged with attempted armed robbery which allegedly occurred on Scott Street, Dandenong, during the morning of Wednesday 21 April, theft of motor vehicle, unlawful assault, commit indictable offence while on bail and driving offences.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 22 April.

A 16-year-old South Melbourne boy sustained minor injuries and remains under hospital guard.

A 13-year-old Hampton girl was conveyed to hospital for observation before being released pending further enquiries.

It’s alleged the Toyota was stolen outside Clayton Road, Clayton just before 9pm on the 20 April.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 63-yearold Berwick man, was not injured.

‘Motorious’ theft of car Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the theft of a car in Hampton Park on Friday 23 April.

The blue 2018 Nissan 370Z coupe, registration 1MU9OH, was stolen from Redwood Avenue sometime between 2am-6.45am.

There is a distinctive “Motorious Performance” sticker on top of the rear window.

Investigators have released an image of the stolen car.

I can shamelessly sing almost every word to your standard end of night party songs.

What has been your most embarrassing moment? When I was 11 I didn’t eat my fish for dinner and as a result my mum wouldn’t let me go to my friend’s birthday party that night, she then made me call him and tell him why.

I haven’t eaten fish since and the story grows legs every time he tells it!

Casey up for sports award Casey’s sporting initiatives have found success in a statewide awards program.

Vic Sport, the state’s peak body for sport and active recreation, has announced the finalists of its 2020 Victorian Sports Awards.

The City of Casey has been named as a finalist in the Local Government Initiative of the Year category for its #CaseyGirlsCan Program and Sport and Physical Activity Strategy 202125.

The category recognises local government authorities that have made a significant contribution to sport in 2020 by developing a participation program or facility.

Noelene Duff, chair of administrators at the City of Casey, said the council was “delighted” to be amongst the finalists.

“The Sport and Physical Activity Strategy 2021-25 aims to get residents more active by partnering with a range of organisations to bring local activities to the area that cater to different ages, skill levels and interests,” she explained.

“As well as providing sport and physical activity programs, the #CaseyGirlsCan initiative is one of the ways in which Council responds to the underlying issues that prevent women and girls from being involved in sport and physical activity.

“After receiving lots of positive feedback from women and girls in the community, we look forward to continuing the program and

Scheme opens to fund three-year-old kinder Children in the electorate of Bass will be able to access an extra year of funded kindergarten next year as part of the Victorian Government’s state-wide rollout of threeyear-old kindergarten.

Enrolments will soon open for about 2500 kindergarten services in Victoria, with central enrolment programs now open in 25 local government areas and soon to open in another 29.

Families should contact the centres they are interested in for more details about enrolment.

The $5 billion decade-long reform will mean 15 hours a week of funded kindergarten programs for all Victorian three- and four-year-olds by 2029.

The reform started in 2020, and children across 21 local government areas in regional Victoria are already attending from threeyear-old kindergarten.

Kinder services and providers across the remaining 58 councils are getting ready to introduce the initiative, with five hours of funded programs on offer in these areas from next year.

This includes programs at both long day

care centres and standalone kindergartens, with parents able to look for local services offering kindergarten programs with the State Government’s ‘Kinder Tick’.

A new round of a major state-wide advertising campaign also starts this week to help families understand the benefits of three-year-old kinder and know to contact their local services to enrol their children.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale praised the rollout of the extra year of kinder.

“The evidence is clear that two years are better than one when it comes to early learning, with children who start kinder at the age of three gaining academic, social and emotional benefits that last throughout their lives.”

More than 2000 people have been offered financial support packages through the State Government’s Early Childhood Scholarship Program since it was launched in October 2018.

These scholarships support the delivery of universal funded three-year-old kindergarten for all Victorian children over a decade, with the roll-out to create 6000 new early childhood jobs.

Funding to get kids moving

Schools in Cranbourne will receive a State Government funding boost to help get kids moving as they return to school for Term 2.

On Tuesday 27 April, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards congratulated three schools in Cranbourne - Cranbourne Park Primary School, Cranbourne West Primary School and Lyndhurst Secondary College - that are among 96 schools across the state to receive a $30,000 funding boost under the Active Schools initiative to help introduce a wholeschool approach to physical activity.

Cranbourne Park Primary School has received funds to rebuild a bike enclosure and boost its existing bike education program.

Cranbourne West Primary School will use the funding in employing a soccer coach and buying soccer goal posts and implementing a weekly soccer club.

Lyndhurst Secondary College will use its funding for the creation of specific sport spaces for each year level, including equipment such as basketball hoops, outdoor table tennis tables, four square spaces and gaga pits (for high energy active ball games) for junior years.

The cash boost is part of the $24.2 million Active Schools initiative, which is delivering more opportunities for physical activity, sport and active recreation for Victorian students, helping them develop healthy lifelong habits.

As part of the wider Active Schools package, all schools will have access to a new Active Schools Toolkit, which will include tips and tricks on how to make their school and their kids more active.

As well, a new team of physical education leaders will provide on-the-ground advice and support to more than 800 schools to improve their approach to sport, physical education and physical activity.

A number of new and innovative approaches to increasing activity will be trialled through several partnerships, including working with the start-up community to explore how technology can get teens moving and adapting Deakin University’s TransformUs! Program for secondary schools to get adolescents moving more and sitting less.

A statewide communications campaign designed to encourage children and their families to be more active and promote the importance of physical activity wil also be rolled out as part of the package.

“Sport and recreation are central to our way of life,” Ms Richards said.

“These grants will help make sure more young people in Cranbourne can get the best start in life with an education linked to active and healthy lifestyles.”

The State Government has opened a round of grants aimed at ensuring emergency services volunteers have the essential equipment and vehicles they need to serve their community and protect lives.

Acting Police and Emergency Services Minister Danny Pearson announced the opening of applications for the latest round of Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) on Friday 23 April, with $14.4 million available for our dedicated volunteer agencies.

VESEP is an ongoing, annual program that provides emergency services volunteer groups with grants to help fund operational equipment, including the purchase of new vehicles, trucks, tankers, watercraft and trailers.

Volunteer groups can also put the money towards minor facility improvements, including refurbishments and amenities, such as kitchens and change rooms.

Under the program, the Government matches every $1 paid by volunteer groups

with a $2 co-contribution, with grants of up to $150,000 available.

Over the past seven years, VESEP has provided more than $90 million to volunteer groups around the state.

Recent grant recipients include Beechworth fire brigade receiving a grant for an Ultra-Light Tanker, while Mallacoota’s SES Unit received a grant towards a generator trailer, including an electrical upgrade. Mallacoota’s lifesaving club also received a grant for two outboard engines, equipment and a beach trailer.

Mr Pearson commended the work of the state’s emergency volunteer groups and encouraged volunteer organisations across the state to apply for grants as part of the latest round.

Veterans to shape inquiry The Victorian Government is seeking feedback on the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide – but is calling on the Commonwealth to give veterans and their families more time to have their say.

Minister for Veterans Affairs Shaun Leane has opened consultation on Terms of Reference for the Royal Commission, which will provide an opportunity to hear from the veteran community and to reflect on their wishes in fixing a broken system.

A dedicated email address – commonwealthroyalcommission.tor@dffh.vic.gov.au – has been established to canvas the views of veterans, their families and the broader public.

The Victorian Government will consult the Victorian Veterans Council and other key stakeholders, and relevant departments such as Department of Justice and Community

Safety and the Department of Health will be involved.

While encouraging people to have their say, the Victorian Government is also calling on the Federal Government to provide more time for people to contribute through the consultation process.

The Federal Government is seeking to finalise consultation on the Terms of Reference by 21 May, and is asking states and territories to consult with the veterans sector and provide input before then.

Given the breadth of consultation required and how central these terms of reference will be to guiding the work of the royal commission and ultimately, saving lives, Minister Leane has written to the Federal Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel Darren Chester calling for this consultation time to be extended to 18 June 2021.

The State Government believes this will allow the veteran community to properly consider what it believes needs to be in the Terms of Reference, and put those views and expectations into writing.

The Victorian Government is also seeking clarification from the Commonwealth on the role of the states and territories in the royal commission.

The Victorian Government said it is continuing to support Veteran’s mental health and wellbeing through its response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

The State Government has established an email address to help veterans and defence personnel contribute to the Royal Commission.

State offers sport support for multicultural youth A State Government grants program aims to help youth connect through local sport.

Minister for Youth Ros Spence has launched a new African and Pasifika Youth Sports Program, with $300,000 in grants available to informal sports teams with young African and Pasifika members.

Local councils and community organisations are encouraged to partner with young people aged 12 to 25 to apply for a grant.

To ensure cost is not a barrier to participation in sport, grants of up to $2000 are available to support African and Pasifika sports teams to cover the costs of uniforms and equipment.

Hub has families at heart Locals came together to celebrate the opening of the Cranbourne West Community Hub with an afternoon of fun family activities.

Located in Cranbourne West, the state-ofthe-art, dual level $9.7 million community facility was officially opened on Saturday 17 April by City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff and Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards.

The facility boasts flexible and shared multi-use spaces for community members to connect, belong, learn and play.

Since opening to the public in January this year, it has already been bustling with community programs and activities and already has 18 regular hirers.

The hub includes inclusive spaces and services for all genders, ages, cultures and community groups to interact and connect, regardless of physical ability and identity.

This includes accessible bathrooms, a wellness and reflection space, ample break out spaces and free public WiFi. A range of community spaces are also available for hire, including three multi-purpose halls, two meeting/training rooms, three consulting rooms, and a business zone providing affordable working and meeting settings, giving small home businesses, entrepreneurs, and remote workers the opportunity to work in a community setting.

The facility includes an energy efficient design, complete with a central courtyard and a tiered green terrace with underground water tanks, which capture rainfall and then assist in passively cooling the entire building.

Ms Duff acknowledged the importance of community hubs in meeting the needs of Casey’s growing community.

“The City of Casey is committed to developing new community facilities to keep up with our rapid population growth, particularly in growing suburbs such as Cranbourne West,” she said.

“This facility will support Council to run a variety of programs and services and allow other community organisations to increase their offerings across the city.”

The State Government contributed a total of $2.533 million dollars through the Growing Suburbs Fund to the construction of the hub, with the council also contributing $7.15 million.

Ms Richards said she was pleased to see the hub open and ready for use.

“It’s great to see the Growing Suburbs Fund continuing to deliver major investments into Cranbourne,” Ms Richards said.

“The programs and classes available at the hub – and the events it will host – make it a fantastic asset for our fast-growing community – giving everyone the chance to try new things, meet with friends and enjoy new opportunities.”

Cute critters to count on

The proof lies in Endeavour Hills author Grace Nolan’s debut counting-book series One to Ten And Back Again.

The series of three - Ten Naughty Numbats, Ten Bush Babies and Ten Lively Lorikeets – dresses up “complex” concepts with catchy, humorous rhymes, rhythm and alliteration.

It’s not just fun but a learning aid, Ms Nolan said.

“I want to make learning so much fun – that is what it’s all about.”

Ms Nolan’s love of Nature also shines through.

She features 30 native animals such as numbats, quolls, quokkas, koalas and brolgas, all beautifully illustrated by Nancy Bevington.

Getting published as a children’s author in Australia is notoriously difficult. Yet Ms Nolan’s Australian publisher Blue Sky Publishing leapt at her submission.

Within months, the first book is in its second printing, with overseas interest in a Turkish-translated edition.

“They love the fact the books have native Australian animals,” she said of the Turkish interest.

Ms Nolan, an English teacher of 30 years, says she well understands children’s early struggles with maths.

Her books are a “subtle” introduction to counting, addition and subtraction, she says.

“My reason for doing this is my inspiration.

I’ve seen children struggle with very basic numeracy and literacy.

“This is a way to have a solid foundation in their understanding of numbers while they want to come back to the books again and again.”

Pearcedale honours them

By Danielle Kutchel Residents from Pearcedale and surrounds came together in a show of community to commemorate Anzac Day 2021.

Police reported around 2500 people in attendance at the dawn service at Pearcedale Public Hall – far more than was expected, perhaps thanks in part to the limitations and restrictions in place at other services around Casey.

Darryn Bass, secretary and booking officer at Pearcedale Public Hall, said the mood of the day was “solemn and sombre”.

The morning featured a number of highlights, including a special tribute to Prince Phillip and a description of his military feats.

It also featured a speaker and marching group from HMAS Cerberus.

Mr Bass said the crowd paused to remember “the many people who didn’t make it back”.

“At the end of the day, whatever grievances and things we have in our lives are nothing compared to the difficulties those men went through in their time at Gallipoli,” he said.

Mr Bass has a strong military heritage, with a father and uncle who served.

“That’s why I want to continue making sure that the Anzac Day service in Pearcedale is continued and has a strong military service.”

The day also served as an opportunity to remember the contributions of locals, including Don Davis, who served in Tobruk and was heavily involved in the Pearcedale Anzac Day events until his passing in December 2020.

The flag was raised on the morning by Vietnam veteran Aaron Dart, who paid tribute to his uncle who passed away last year.

Mr Bass said it was important to include as many people as possible in the ceremony.

“Anzac Day is not about one person, but a group of people,” he said.

“I want to make sure that the people of tomorrow, people like my son, see what those Anzacs went through.

“Hopefully these services continue on for many more years, and we do remember them and we will not forget and will stay to the end and lest we forget,” he said.

Holt MP Anthony Byrne attended both the ANZAC Day Dawn service at the Pearcedale Public Hall, and the ANZAC Day Service at 11am at the Cranbourne RSL. “At the Cranbourne RSL and at the Pearcedale Community Hall Dawn Service we paid our respects and expressed our gratitude to our ANZACs,” he said.

“We remembered all of those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice. They fought that so that we may be free. Their sacrifice, courage, endurance and spirit of mateship will never be forgotten.”

Medal recognition: Mates celebrate belated honours

By Cam Lucadou-Wells In what’s believed to be an RSL first, national service medals simply sent in the mail have been presented to veterans in a formal ceremony in Dandenong.

Five members of Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL were recognised in front of friends and loved ones at the sub-branch’s ‘president’s lunch’ on 18 April.

Nearly 50 years after their service, Cyril Lloyd and David Wells were finally presented with Australian Defence Medals and Commemoration of National Service Medals.

Both enlisted for National Service during the Vietnam War. They served on home shores but not overseas – roles that were only recently recognised with medals.

Other recipients were Simon Bloomer with an Order of Australia Medal, Stuart Couch with a Commendation for Brave Conduct and Les Hughes with an Order of Australia Medal and RSL Meritorious Service Medal.

Their presentations had been delayed for 12 months due to Covid-19 lockdowns.

RSL Victoria chief executive Jamie Twidale made the presentations.

The ceremony provided “completion” for Mr Wells, who voluntarily enlisted for National Service, trained at Puckapunyal and was “fully prepared” to go to the Vietnam War. However during training, he badly broke his leg playing rugby and missed his draft.

He completed his full term of National Service at the Artillery’s Proof and Experimental Range at Port Wakefield in South Australia.

“The medals recognise that we were prepared to put our bodies on the line but didn’t have the opportunity,” Mr Wells said.

“We had the commitment to do it.

“Instead we were put in a situation where we were not shot at.”

His medal was unceremoniously sent out by post.

The RSL ceremony was one that should be replicated for other unheralded recipients, he said.

“It’s the completion of awarding the medals.

“It’s not a huge crowd but it’s a crowd who appreciate the value of the medals. There’s an acknowledgment by your peers, by people who know what’s involved.”

Mr Lloyd, who was one of the first National Servicemen enlisted for the Vietnam War, said the medal now felt “more real”.

During his seven years’ service, he was posted to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, and later the Light Aid Detachment, 15 Field Regiment of Royal Australian Artillery in Dandenong.

“Even though I didn’t go overseas, I did a few years. My mates had hair down to their shoulders while I had the short back and sides.

“Your number came up and you were obliged to do your duty.”

Mr Hughes was awarded the rarely-bestowed RSL Meritorious Service Medal for his

65 years of exceptional service in the RSL. The honour – restricted to two recipients nationally a year for at least 25 years’ “outstanding service”– comes on top of a recent OAM and medal from the South Korean government.

The 89-year-old RSL life member served on Royal Australian Navy frigates and destroyers during the Korean War in the 1950’s.

Since retiring in 1996, Mr Hughes has been a fixture at Anzac and Remembrance day appeals, selling badges and poppies to raise money for the RSL. One of his favourite selling spots has been outside Coles in Hallam – though that was put to an abrupt halt during Covid lockdowns last year.

“I don’t volunteer to receive awards or whatever. I do it because it’s helping people.

“It’s quite pleasing to receive a medal but I don’t expect them.”

He has worked as president and CEO of Carry On (Victoria) that helps deliver welfare and housing to veterans.

Mr Couch, a Dandenong RSL board member, was deployed in two tours of Iraq in 2005-07.

He however received his latest award for an act of civilian bravery as a Sheriff’s Officer. With his bare hands, he disarmed an axe-wielding man who attacked him and a female colleague.

Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells said the presentations were a first for the sub-branch and the RSL generally.

Silent dawn at Cranbourne

By Danielle Kutchel Clad in robes, beanies and gloves, families spaced themselves throughout the Cranbourne RSL forecourt for a small service to mark Anzac Day 2021.

The service had been planned as an inviteonly occasion, and strong numbers of invitees attended.

As well as members, their carers and families, local emergency services and air force cadets were among the guests.

Wreaths were laid – small contributions of remembrance from local schools, service clubs and families determined to never forget.

As dawn broke, the grey sunlight gently touched hundreds of solemn faces as the bugle sounded The Last Post before a minute’s silence was held.

Bill Shepherd, senior vice president of the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL sub-branch, said he was pleased with the turnout at the service.

“It went well, under the Covid conditions and all the restrictions we’ve got on, it was pretty good,” he said.

Due to ongoing restrictions, the service was not followed by its usual gunfire breakfast; however, friends, veterans and members mingled afterwards, speaking in hushed voices as though not to wake the morning.

As the crowds dispersed, the morning ended in a quintessentially Australian manner: with the call of a kookaburra in a nearby tree.

Students take Anzac lead

By Danielle Kutchel Students and young people led Narre Warren North’s Anzac Day services, ensuring the knowledge of what has been is passed on to new generations.

A dawn service held at the Narre Warren North War Memorial was hosted by 1st Narre Warren North Scout Group, and was attended by around 70 locals keen to pay their respects to the fallen.

Later in the morning, around 200 turned out for a mid-morning service that featured readings and hymns by students from Harkaway Hills College and Narre Warren North Primary School.

Steven Archibald, a representative of the Narre Warren North Community Association’s Anzac Day Committee, said it was an emotional day that demonstrated how strong the Anzac tradition is, with “heartbreaking” tributes from the students involved.

“I think the day is still important and we should keep it in our community and keep remembering,” he said.

“With the city [Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance] service being restricted on numbers, the communities seem to be the places where people are paying their respects.

“Two years ago, before Covid, we had 20 or 30 people come out, so I think people have wanted to come out, and they have.”

He said Anzac Day held a special place in the hearts of Narre Warren North locals.

“These monuments were put up by the public. Everyone wanted to be able to remember and recognise what happened,” he explained.

“This community is a very small community, and all the main roads around here are names you’ll see on this cenotaph – some of the families still live here.”

Narre Warren North was one of the few locations in the area to hold a public service, which Mr Archibald said may also have contributed to its popularity.

“Hopefully next year we will build on it and people will start getting back to that normality and be able to reflect in the way that they want to,” he added.

Students gather to remember fallen

By Danielle Kutchel Students at Cranbourne West Secondary College have led the school in a ceremony to commemorate Anzac Day. It was a first for the school, which only opened this year and currently houses 200 year 7 students.

Principal Rob Duncan said students felt it was important to have a service to remember fallen service men and women.

Due to the placement of school holidays this year, there wasn’t much time to get the service organised.

Mr Duncan said he met with students on the first day of term two to discuss whether to have a ceremony.

He said students were keen to hold one before the day, and Friday 23 April was chosen as the date.

The four school captains and four vice captains then worked together to design the service.

“The students spoke to me about how they wanted it to look,” he explained, adding he was “really proud” of their achievement in pulling the event together.

On the day, students entered the library and listened attentively as the school captains gave a speech on the birth of the Anzac legend and Australia’s involvement in wars over the years.

The vice captains laid a wreath, and an integration aide sung the Australian and New Zealand national anthems, accompanied by a staff member from a nearby school on guitar.

The event concluded with the Last Post and reveille.

Mr Duncan said marking Anzac Day was important as it showed respect for history and the sacrifices of others.

He said the school plans to host an Anzac Day event each year.

“Every year it’ll become a student-led activity, as it should be,” Mr Duncan said.

“It’s their school, their country, their traditions. I think it’s important that students continue to lead it.”

Lynbrook Primary School has paid tribute to our fallen Anzacs with a number of special activities.

Each year level at the school made a wreath for a special Anzac assembly, with all students contributing a part to the touching circles.

Students also put on a play about Anzac Day to help each other learn about what’s gone before.

According to grade four teacher Narelle Smith, the play helped teach the students about the history of Anzac Day and allowed them to show respect for those who went to war.

“The focus of our play was not so much glorifying war but celebrating the bravery of people who were prepared to go,” she said.

She added that each year level explores Anzac Day in a different way through classroom activities.

Some year levels use Anzac Day-themed books to drive the conversation, including a popular one that tells the story of a teddy bear that went to war with a soldier.

“This makes it accessible to them,” Ms Smith said.

Her class studied the Rats of Tobruk and the Second World War, dramatizing a book called ‘The Anzac Tree’ and allowing students to act out each part.

“It surprised me how silent and respectful the children in the audience were. They were quite engaged with the play,” Ms Smith said.

Students laid their handmade wreaths on a memorial cenotaph at the school, and had a minute’s silence as well as a sounding of the Last Post at a full school assembly.

“It was completely run by our student leaders from start to finish,” Ms Smith said.

“Teachers took a step back. Student ownership is really important.”

Cycling rule: Passing distances to make roads safer Mandatory minimum passing distances for motorists passing cyclists came into effect this week.

Taking effect on 26 April 2021, the updated rule makes it mandatory for motorists to give riders at least one metre clearance when overtaking on roads up to 60km/h, and 1.5 metres on roads with speed limits above 60km/h – clarifying the existing guidelines around passing riders and brings Victoria into line with other states. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Last year there was a welcome drop in the number of lives lost on our roads across all user groups – except cyclists, with 13 people losing their lives compared to the five year average of 10 riders dying each year.

Under tthe updated rule, drivers and motorcyclists can briefly cross painted lines to give cyclists the space they need – including solid lines, double lines, painted tram lane lines and painted islands – but only when they have a clear view ahead and it’s safe to do so.

Cyclists need to follow the road rules too – including riding predictably, riding in bike lanes when they are provided and using hand signals to change direction.

Consultation with motoring and bicycling bodies and other key stakeholders to ensure the rule fits into practical, everyday situations has occurred.

The law will attract maximum court penalties of up to $1,652 and on the spot in-

fringements of $330.

Improper overtaking or passing offences incur two demerit points.

In addition, a trial to understand how escooters could be safely incorporated into the transport network will start later this year.

It will run for up to a year in three council areas chosen through a targeted expression of interest process, regulated by the Department of Transport.

Ground breaks on school Clyde families will soon have a new schooling option to choose from, with a sod turning ceremony held for independent school Clyde Grammar.

Mirvac and CSV Limited have celebrated breaking ground on the new independent school, which is located at Mirvac’s 240-hectare Smiths Lane estate in Clyde North, one of the largest landholdings in Melbourne’s south east.

The milestone was reached in a ceremony on Wednesday 21 April with Mirvac general manager of residential Victoria Elysa Anderson, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale, Clyde Grammar principal Leanne Evans and CSV Limited chairman Marie Ormandy in attendance.

With the City of Casey’s population expected to grow significantly in the coming years, Mirvac has partnered with CSV Limited, founders of Casey Grammar School in Cranbourne and Balcombe Grammar School in Mount Martha, to deliver the prep to year 12 independent school.

Ms Anderson said that the milestone reinforced Mirvac’s 49-year legacy of creating sustainable communities with a focus on social connectivity and early access to quality education.

“Smiths Lane has experienced unprecedented demand since launch in September 2019, so it is an exciting opportunity to deliver critical infrastructure, such as Clyde Grammar, that will enable the neighbourhood and surrounding community to thrive and grow sustainably,” she said.

“Clyde Grammar will be the third school Mirvac has delivered within our Victoria masterplanned communities.

“The new independent school follows the successful opening of Bacchus Marsh Grammar at our Woodlea, Aintree community in February 2019 and the opening of Hume Anglican Grammar’s Donnybrook campus at Olivine in March 2019.

“Access to quality education is essential for every community we create. Clyde Grammar is just one of the many ways Smiths Lane will create a positive legacy for today’s children, as well as future generations.”

Construction of the school is expected to create 120 full-time jobs.

Clyde Grammar will allow for up to 1200 students when full prep to year 12 enrolment occurs.

In preparation for the opening of the campus in 2022 the school has already begun enrolments, with 87 prep and year 1 students currently learning while temporarily located at CSV Limited’s Casey Grammar School and enrolments now open for 2022.

Some of those students were attended the breaking ground ceremony for a first look at where the new facility will be located.

A total of 144 prep, year 1 and year 2 students are expected to start in 2022 at the brand new school with the year levels growing consecutively each calendar year.

“Learning environments have an impact on education, and we all want our kids to be confident, have a positive sense of self, and be active citizens with a strong voice.

“I can’t wait to see this new primary school open in 2022.”

On Friday 30 April, Scot Robin will don those iconic glasses and take the stage with his Crickets to perform over 30 of Buddy Holly’s hit songs, including That’ll Be The Day, Heartbeat, Think It Over, Peggy Sue, Raining In My Heart, Rave On, Maybe Baby, True Love Ways and many more.

The internationally acclaimed production has mesmerised and excited audiences around the world both visually and musically, with high energy performances, brilliant costumes and fantastic musicianship.

After an empty calendar throughout 2020, Mr Robin said the team was looking forward to its first theatre show since getting out of lock-

down – and its first performance at Bunjil Place.

“As much as we want to be back in the theatre, the audience wants to be back in the theatre,” Mr Robin said.

This year is extra special as Mr Robin celebrates his 27th year of performing the role of Buddy Holly. He has received international acclaim for his portrayal.

“We’ve been all over the world with the show and around Australia seven or eight times,” Mr Robin said.

“No one thought it would last this long, but people keep coming and they love Buddy Holly. It’s the best job in the world!”

Mr Robin said he grew up listening to Buddy Holly, as his dad was a “huge fan”.

In 1991, Mr Robin took on the lead role in the smash hit musical ‘Buddy’, kicking off a ca-

reer as the iconic performer.

“I had no idea that for the next 30 years I would be travelling and performing his music.

It’s an amazing ride,” he said.

The Buddy Holly in concert show is not just a Buddy Holly concert, he said: it’s a high energy show with the audience invited to sing and dance in the aisles.

“You’ll absolutely have a fun night out, and more than ever, we need that,” Mr Robin said.

“If you love rock and roll music, you’ll have the best time. It’s just a celebration of an incredible young kid’s time in music.”

By Nick Creely Nestled within Berwick College, the Casey Cannons Hockey Club has had a strong imprint on the local community since its establishment in 1989.

As local sport continues its successful resurgence back into communities after the difficulties presented by Covid-19 in 2020, hockey is just one of many sports bouncing back with plenty of gusto.

With a strong contingent of men’s and women’s senior sides in 2021, and a junior program which is still looking to bounce back, the club is well placed for the present, and the future as it knuckles down for a huge season.

Cannons president David Hyland said that while the recovery from Covid-19 has presented plenty of challenges, particularly in the junior ranks, the vibe around the club has brought plenty of smiles as they encourage people to get down and cherish the sport’s triumphant return.

“It’s early days, but we feel like it’s going to be a good year for the club,” he said.

“It’s a great vibe at the club, we’re getting really good numbers to training from each unit so that’s been really significant.

“We’re really driving that, it’s been our focus - success off the field will bring success on the field as a whole unit, so we want to encourage people to come and watch games, before and after they play and get involved.”

The Cannons have got very strong senior representation this season across the different divisions.

“We’re flying when it comes to seniors, we’ve four men’s teams, three women’s, but can’t quite the fourth once up and running,” Hyland said.

“We’ve had people just wanting to get out, and so our men’s teams have had a lot of returns that haven’t played for a few years.

“We definitely feel we’re pretty strong, we’ve got some strength this year in our sides.

“The women’s numbers are solid; we’re getting great numbers to training.

“It’s early on, but we’re really confident that we’re going to be pretty successful this year.”

Hyland said the club has had issues getting its Under 16, Under 14, Under 12 and Under 10 junior sides thriving - similar to all sports in the region.

“Junior wise, almost like every club, it’s been a struggle, and we’ve heard that across the board,” he said.

“With Covid, kids are losing interest - I’ve heard of basketball and netball teams going

Hilary Doulton played her 400th game on the weekend. from four teams to just one, and in the hockey world we’re experiencing the same stuff.”

The club also had a significant individual milestone on the weekend, with club great Hilary Doulton playing her 400th match at home.

She capped off the occasion in style, scoring the opening goal.

Hilary started back in 1996 when the club was named Berwick Hockey Club, and has been a loyal club member for 25 continuous years. Adding to her remarkable loyalty, Hilary won a premiership in 2003 and has played the majority of her hockey in the top two grades.

“It is a great achievement - she’s been at our club a long time and been mainly in the top grades,” Hyland said.

“Hilary is one of those people that has stuck by us - you get players that go away and play elsewhere and then come back, so to spend 25 years at the club is quite an achievement.”

The Cannons also have another significant milestone on the horizon in the coming weeks, with life member Jeff Reidy to play his 600th game.

Part of the club since 1992, it’s an astonishing feat, and a remarkable show of loyalty.

“He’s been a long-term member of this club, a committee member and it’s a great achievement,” Hyland said.

“He’s one of those people that just does everything around the club.”

Loh has a wealth of knowledge and experienced in basketball, with a heavy coaching background.

Loh coached at Frankston for over two decades, before joining the the Cavs in 2015. It wasn’t long before Loh was leading the charge again, in 2018 he was lined up to coach the Youth League side, before a departure in the coaching ranks saw him jump into a more senior role with the men’s side.

“I was going to have a break, but I saw the opportunity to supervise some other teams and help out with coaching a number of age groups,” he said.

“I was meant to coach the Youth League; we had a coach leave and I was asked to move into the role.

“I loved it, enjoyed it, enjoyed the guys,” Loh said.

As for this season, the Cavs are going to be a different outfit, with a heavy turnover changing the layout of the squad.

“We have had a lot of players retire and a lot of young guys have come up,” he said.

“It is going to be a very different team to what we have had in the past.

“We are younger, but we are a lot faster.

“We have a lot of shooters in the team that are exciting, they like to shoot from the three-

point line so I think that will provide a lot of excitement if people are coming to watch the games.

“They have a lot to learn because they are younger guys, but I think they are going to be an exciting group,” Loh said.

With an exciting group promised, Loh said there are a few to keep a keen eye out for this season.

“There are a couple,” he said.

“But one that really stands out is Keith Robinson; he is a young fella who has just made the state under-20 team, which is fantastic for him, he has always been performing at that level.

“He has joined our program because he wants to prepare himself for college, so we hope that he has a great year, not only will he make a difference, but the exciting thing is he will be getting himself a scholarship to the US. “That is his goal, we wish him the best. “(He is a) Tall young man, he can shoot from three, he is one of the fastest guys on the court, really good at offensive boards – he is the type of player that will represent what we do.

“Anthony Williams is also our key import, and already he is leading the team, he can

put points on the board, but he is the one providing a lot of our fast run.” Loh said.

While he has been in the system for almost longer than most of his side has been alive, Loh still believes his hunger is there to take his team to the promised land, and that it is a much easier role to fulfill when surrounded by good people.

“I love to see players get better, I enjoy the team aspect of it,” he said.

“I have always thought there was a bit of science to making a team work together and there is always something you can do better.

“I absolutely love it and if you are around good people you enjoy what you do; I have been lucky enough to have a lot of that at Casey.”

After trailing at half-time on the weekend, Loh’s Cavaliers produced a clinical third term to break away to a match-defining lead.

Casey scored 29 points to Sunbury’s 13 in the third term, on its way to the 87-75 victory.

As for Loh’s promise of his side being able to shoot from beyond the arc, they didn’t disappoint, draining 36 points from three for the night.

Matt Donlan led the side with 21 points while three other players also reached double figures.

Super Sam strikes gold

By David Nagel Surviving the school of hard knocks has made her first national championship all the sweeter for Berwick’s Sam De Riter who took home the Elite Women Individual Pursuit gold medal in Brisbane recently.

De Riter smashed her best time in qualifying for the 3km final, tearing around Anna Meares Stadium in 3:32.006, before bringing her coach Nick Owen to tears with a dominant gold medal winning performance.

The three-time Victorian title holder, and runner-up in the 2019 nationals, said the exhilaration she had dreamed of never quite came to fruition when she crossed the finish line.

“It’s something I have been working towards for a very long time,” a satisfied De Riter said.

“The overwhelming feeling was just how much of a relief it was. You would think it would be super exciting when you achieve that aim but it was just a feeling of ‘thank god’.”

“But I’m in a position to reflect a little now and it’s exciting that the hard work of everyone around me has finally paid off and we got the result we’ve been looking for.

“I rode a three-and-a-half second PB, which is pretty insane because training before the event was a lot different than what it normally is. I had high expectations on myself but to ride a 3:32.006 was next level, it was great for it all to come together in a big moment.”

De Riter - who went to Berwick Primary, Beaconhills College and St Margarets – was on the cusp of Olympic selection in 2018 when she moved to Adelaide to join the Australian Podium Potential team.

Entering the prime of her career, and an elite environment, the now 32-year-old was expected to blossom and push for national selection.

Instead, her trip to Adelaide became a horror story.

“I had a shocking time over there,” a reflective De Riter explained.

“I was living with others and was constantly unwell, and towards the end we realised it was an allergy that was causing all the problems. I got run down and caught everything, and then

“That took months to fix itself, then we went to Belgium and I got sick again.”

It was at that stage that De Riter questioned her own career.

“I’d had enough, it’s pretty bad for coaching staff when their athlete is always sick and that was me, and I’d never been that person before,” she said.

“It was really frustrating for me and obviously for them as well. In Belgium I basically sat in a house and didn’t ride my bike for four weeks, it was very frustrating.”

Sam eventually hit rock bottom, being exited from the Adelaide program at the end of 2019 and moving back to Melbourne.

“Adelaide was my big opportunity, it should be all about forward progression, you are not supposed to go backwards,” she explained.

“I came back to Victoria, not sure what to do, and got exited from the state program as well…that was a real kick in the guts.”

De Riter’s misfortune didn’t end there, crashing and ending up with a brain bleed and severe concussion and being out for three months. This came a week after hitting the

pavement and having stitches in her elbow.

Her and her team had a choice to make – soldier on or throw in the towel.

“My coach (Nick Owen) said he would help me if I wanted to keep going but Covid was about and there was only online racing at the time, “ De Riter remembers.

“But I thought I would keep going as long as I was enjoying it.”

Due to Covid, De Riter had no access to the track so stayed fit by hitting the road during 2020, riding the Summer of Cycling and then the Road Nationals for the first time in five years at the end of February this year.

The track nationals were only six weeks away.

“It was a pretty big thing to go from road to track, they don’t really transfer, and I didn’t want to underperform and have people say ‘that’s why we exited you from the program’.”

De Riter said.

“We qualified through the State championships and then my coach wanted me to do a 2km training run at the Masters, two weeks prior to Brisbane.

“I broke the world record for my age group by eight seconds and rode a 2:21 which meant

I was in pretty good shape.”

De Riter’s road preparation had left her six kilos lighter than normal, with no regular gym sessions to keep her muscled up, but things – for the first time in a long time - seemed to be on track.

Her qualifying run in Brisbane gave her even more confidence heading into the final against Tasmania’s Lauren Perry.

“I knew I needed to run a 3:34 to qualify and rode to that schedule, but with four laps to go I felt good and picked up two seconds and rode a 32,” she said.

“Lauren went faster but I knew she had gone deep and I might have a bit more left in the tank.

“I wasn’t 100 per cent in track form but I hadn’t missed a session and I knew I would be happy with my performance regardless of the result. Everything just fell into place.”

De Riter’s desperation to win her first national title saw her shy totally away from her regular plans during the race for gold.

“How I rode the final is how I would tell someone to never race it,” De Riter said with a laugh.

“I was listening to the track commentator, I wasn’t listening to my coach, I just got carried away with the emotion of everything. After everything I’d been through, I really wanted to win and I lost my focus a fair bit.

“Listening to the commentator helped me forget the pain and my coach didn’t care because we knew we had it won by then and he was crying anyway.”

So what does the future now hold for Berwick’s newest national champion?

“I’m content with the result but I’m pretty sure that I’m going to keep riding until after Tokyo and see where that takes us,” she said.

“We don’t know what opportunities are around the corner, there is the potential of opportunity but it will be another step up and I’m sure there will be some huge challenges along the way.”

But if there’s one thing we know about Sam De Riter – she can overcome the school of hard knocks.

Liam leaps another hurdle

But once the news hit home, time stood still.

From the sound of the siren in Narre Warren’s elusive premiership over Berwick back in 2019, to the moment Liam Myatt started pre-season at the Frankston Dolphins went by in a blink of an eye.

But the next three months felt like an eternity.

Myatt had been knocked out twice in the matter of six days, and with the feeling of euphoria that comes hand in hand with a premiership, the concern for a serious head injury had been turned away.

The concern quickly surfaced, when dayto-day movements became abnormal.

“I got knocked out in the prelim against Beaconsfield just before half-time, I ended up needing about six or seven stitches above my eye,” Myatt said.

“I got hit again in the third quarter of the grand final and passed another concussion test.

“I had two hits in the space of a week; I didn’t think much of it.

“I trained for Frankston and started getting side effects.

“My vision was blurry, I had migraines all the time and when I walked out of a room my eyes were really sensitive to sun light.

“I told that to the Frankston doctors and straight away they sent me for an MRI. “They ended up finding a brain tumour on the back of my head.

“The knocks didn’t cause the brain tumour, but the knocks could have irritated it and caused those side effects,” he said.

grown accustom to the doctor’s office, nothing could have prepared him for the three months he was about to endure.

“The doctor gave me three options: ignore it and in six-month’s time it could be too late; have a biopsy or get it cut out. It was obvious for me; I went with getting it cut out,” he said.

“My surgery wasn’t for three months.

“I had to wait three months not knowing whether I had brain cancer or not.

“It was a pretty scary three months.”

After pushing through an immensely draining three months, Myatt was locked in for his surgery.

An operation on such an important part of the body comes with huge risks, which made the process all the more petrifying.

“The main risk (in the operation) was having a seizure afterwards, it was all about how I recovered,” he said.

“The first couple days after surgery are the most dangerous part, how your body pulls up from the surgery.

“Your body could reject what they have put into you; it is about a 30 per cent chance of having a seizure in the first couple of weeks.

“It was a hard first month; I had about 40 staples put in the back of my head. I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t rest my head on any pillows with the pins in either side of my skull.

“All three sides you can sleep on were all sore; but time was the best thing for it. The more time I spent away from the surgery table, the better I got,” Myatt said.

While many in his situation wouldn’t have footy on his mind, Myatt couldn’t wait to get back out doing what he loves.

“When I found out about the news, the first question I asked the doctors was ‘will I be able to come back this year?’ They laughed at me.

“I was always going to come back.”

Despite finally climbing the mountain for his beloved club Narre Warren and making large inroads at Frankston, Myatt has moved over to join some family and friends at Hampton Park.

And with a brilliant perspective on his situation, he is still grateful for those who helped him along the way.

Holt is back...with a bang

By Nick Creely The sight and sounds of Marc Holt in a Cranbourne jumper is every reason to go out and get a glimpse of local football.

His passion is unbridled, his love for the jumper unmatched, and his power and skill something to behold.

And the legendary full-forward has absolutely dominated in his first game back at the club, slotting six goals as the Eagles overcame Woori Yallock in the driving rain, 8.10 (58) to 16.16 (112).

His new partner-in-crime, young star Corey Ellison, also slotted six majors in ominous signs of what the pair may be capable of this season.

It’s a pairing that excites Eagles coach Steve O’Brien - it’s the young and the old combining to showcase its wares.

“It was a big result for the big fellas,” he said.

“It’s exciting - you’ve got the old war horse and the up and coming kid with a heap of potential.

“They feed off each other a lot - it’s the first time in a long time they’ve played together, and the longer the game went the better they went.”

O’Brien said that the legendary sharpshooter, who is also nearing 1,100 career goals in total after his stint with Karingal in 2019, is relishing the challenge of a new competition, with new conditions and opponents.

Holt, in his typically exciting fashion, had eyes locked on him as he once again stamped his authority on a match of football.

“It excites him, it is new, it’s not the same old, its new teams, and new challenges, and we all know the big fella loves a challenge,” he said.

“It presents him a chance to prove himself all over again to a whole new audience really.”

The Tigers certainly pushed the Eagles in a contested game of footy, with the home side shooting out to an early lead before the rain began to sway the game in the visitors’ corner.

Eventually, through the efforts of Holt, Ellison, and some strong, disciplined football across all lines, including standout performances from Glenn Osborne, skipper Brandon Osborne and Jarryd Barker, the visitors broke the game open to register an almost 10 goal win.

“It was tough conditions, it was a really tough contest in the first half, and late in the second quarter we started to open it up a little,” O’Brien said.

“We then managed to space them in the third quarter, but it was a tough game.

“It was a great team effort, everyone played their role and executed the plan that we put into place.

“We know Woori is a tough side at their ground and they like the contest, and I

The Tigers will have taken plenty out of the game, with O’Brien believing they’ll “be right up there” this season, with Brad Clark, Zach Monkhorst and Jason Lindgren named in the best.

Olinda Ferny Creek, meanwhile, has bounced back from its standalone defeat against Narre Warren last week, surging away with a dominant final term against Upwey Tecoma, 12.15 (87) to 6.7 (43).

The Bloods are tipped to be one of the competition’s big improvers, and showcased that it will be a difficult proposition in 2021 with a solid victory.

Despite leading at every change, the Bloods couldn’t quite shake the Tigers, with an eightpoint quarter time lead shaved to four at half time, with a tough and contested style game taking hold.

Both sides kicked one goal apiece in the third term, with the Bloods holding onto a five-point advantage, before flexing its muscle with an eight-goal final term to bank the win.

Bloods coach Brendan Donovan was pleased with his side’s bounce back from last week.

“We were disappointed with our efforts at Narre - it was good preparation for Upwey, and we knew we had to improve,” he said.

“We made a few changes at selection, and it seemed to have worked - it was a tough slog, lots of stoppages, and once it moved away from the stoppages we were able to play our own game.”

Donovan said that the group coped with the pace of the game better this week.

“We struggled with the pressure of Narre, we didn’t touch the ball a lot, and when we did we turned it over a lot,” he said.

“That was much better this week - there was things we took out of the loss, but we’ve got a hell of a long way to go.

“We’re happy to bank the win, we had a good night Saturday, and now we quickly move on.”

Nick Keegan clinched the medal for best on ground with a four-goal display for the Bloods, while Peter Gough, Matt Scharenberg (two goals) and Pat Seymour were also standouts.

Despite being unable to capitalise, the Dogs held a four-point lead at the final change, before a burst from the Doves saw three goals to two in the final term.

Jake Mullen was absolutely superb for the Doves, with the forward snagging four in his return match; fellow recruit Mark Seedsman was impressive, while Sam Muirhead was all class.

But there was plenty to like from a Wandin perspective - Pat Bruzzese in particular looks to have taken his game to another level with an eye-catching display.

In the remaining match, Beaconsfield snared an early-scalp, knocking over reigning premier Narre Warren in an excellent display, 13.12 (90) to 5.14 (44).

Casualty list keeps growing for the wounded Wickers

By David Nagel A new and exciting challenge is getting more and more difficult for the Berwick Football Club as injuries to key players threaten to derail an exciting first week in the Eastern Football League Premier Division.

The Wickers, who were the talk of the town after a close loss to Noble Park in round one, have been decimated by injuries to key players as they look to remain competitive against some of the best community football talent in Victoria.

Coach Clint Evans was forced to make six changes ahead of Saturday’s trip to Rowville, which began horribly, with the Hawks hitting the ground running after a round-one bye.

Rowville kicked 7.3 to 2.0 in a first-quarter onslaught that set up a 60-point win, the final scores 17.16 (118) to 9.4 (58).

Evans praised his opposition for their power and skill, but said it was frustrating his side is not getting an opportunity to show its full wares.

“The simple fact is we’ve got some very good players out at the moment, but we’ll pick up our bottom lip and move on. There’s no point or benefit in sooking about it, there’s still a good vibe around the place and we need to work a bit harder.”

“We had nearly a handful of debutants on Saturday and I was pretty impressed that we didn’t let the margin blow out to more than 10 goals,” Evans said of his side’s slow start.

“Every game we get into these kids is going to be a massive positive for this club mov-

ing forward. That’s the positive we can take away from the situation we are in and that’s how we need to approach it.

“From a competitor’s point of view, having eight of your senior core missing is frustrating because Saturday could have been a totally different story. We just have to hang tough until the cavalry arrives.”

Evans praised the efforts of defenders Jayden Graham and Michael Riseley, and Tim Gunn, who made the most of limited opportunities to kick four goals. Madi Andrews and Tom Brennan were others to shows character after their team’s uncharacteristic slow start.

The Wickers are on the road again this week, with a trip to Balwyn, before a home clash against North Ringwood, then a bye.

Meanwhile, Berwick’s women’s team is rolling along nicely after making it a perfect two from two with a 6.0 (36) to 3.2 (20) victory over Rowville.

Courtney De Kroon was outstanding for the Wickers with three goals, while Jade Smith, Jess Szalek and Logan O’ConnellWebb were others to impress with their fourquarter efforts.
