Renovations to commence Major $3 million renovations will soon begin at the Stanthorpe Plaza, with existing tenants to vacate by the end of next week. Over a period of five months, the Plaza’s carpark, entrance, amenities, Woolworths and specialty shops will get a complete makeover. It is expected there will be eight new shops available for lease when renovations are complete. Story page 3

Dam progresses By Jess Baker The Granite Belt Irrigation Project (GBIP) has reached a crucial milestone, says Granite Belt Water CEO Lloyd Taylor. Pipeline construction tenders are scheduled to be released at the end of the month, on 30 April, with dam construction tenders to open shortly afterward, on 18 May. “250 jobs are expected to be created in con-

struction and a significant proportion of those will be local,” said Mr Taylor. “Over 18 separate groups are interested already … all tier two contractors.” The GBIP commenced pre-construction works in April 2020 – thanks to an accumulative $12 million investment from the Queensland and federal governments – and is now working towards obtaining the approvals necessary to begin construction.

Mr Taylor said construction of the proposed 12,000 megalitre dam at Emu Swamp, southwest of Stanthorpe, and the 117 kilometre pipe network should take two years, in which time Granite Belt Water must acquire 3900 megalitres of water allocations. At this time, the only allocation Granite Belt Water has acquired is a 1740 megalitre parcel provided by the state government. An additional 450 megalitre allocation could possibly

come from Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC), dependent on a number of caveats being satisfied. If SDRC does decide to sell part of its allocation from Storm King Dam to Granite Belt Water, it is important the water is sold at market value so ratepayers are not unnecessarily burdened.
