Rescue mission By Taylah Eastwell When Donna Grundy first approached wholesale nurseries asking if she could have their waste, she felt as if she “may as well have been asking people to fly to the moon with [her] tomorrow, because it was such a strange concept”. Fast-forward a few years, Ms Grundy’s passion for reducing waste in the horticultural industry has come to fruition, with her Silvan nursery successfully rehoming plants that would otherwise end up in landfill. Her nursery, Recycled Roots and Leaves, takes “discarded” plants from wholesale nurseries across the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley and gives them a second chance at life. “Some people say it’s the op shop of plants,” Ms Grundy laughed. Ms Grundy said the whole concept of rehoming plants came to her after working in the horticultural industry for over 25 years. “I was at a crossroads with my work and thought, what am I going to do from here? I could see all these viable plants going into landfill or dumped out the back because they weren’t perfect, whatever perfect means,” she said. Ms Grundy put a message on Facebook with her idea of a recycling-oriented nursery and received a “phenomenal response” from locals. “So I came up with this idea of approaching wholesale nurseries and asking if I could help deal with their waste,” she said. A garden rescue mission From page 1 Ms Grundy said waste in the horticultural industry is “absolutely huge”, with plants that are “slightly-crooked” or not visually “perfect” often finding themselves tossed into the rubbish pile. “They either get tossed out of site or into a skip bin with or without the plastic. The issue is that plants are full of fertilizers. The buildup of fertilizer gets into the soil which gets into groundwater. Most wholesale nurseries operate off ground water, or dam water. That water is contaminated with fertilizer so, in a sense, the extra fertilizer in the water is propping new plants up even more. In my experience, plants are grown way too quickly with far too much water in environments very different to the garden,” she said. “The problem is, when plants are taken home to a garden, they don’t get the same attention they got in the wholesale nursery,” she said. Her secret – “toughening up the plants”. “Because they were rejected from the start, they toughen up here very quickly which makes it a tougher plant and not reliant on fertilizer or water, so when it gets into someone’s garden it’s a similar environment and I’ve given them the advice and the plants end up flourishing and surviving,” she said. And the process seems to be working, with a wooden sign out the front of the nursery stating Ms Grundy has saved 21,000 tubes from one nursery in just 12 months. “That is a drop in the ocean. That’s one nursery up here in the Hills, and they are everywhere up here,” she said. But Ms Grundy isn’t just giving plants a new life, she’s also helping to improve the lives of locals. She runs a range of disability programs, a community garden and supports women by providing a “safe, inclusive happy and positive environment”.

Ms Grundy said a girl, who has a disability, has been able to drop a few days at her full time job after Ms Grundy encouraged her to sell her “little suckers” at the Silvan nursery. “She has become a business woman, making her own decisions and empowering herself, which is really important,” she said. Several volunteers also attend the site weekly to help with potting, mulching, and most importantly – to feel included. “I’ve had women with specific issues going on who don’t feel safe and have all sorts of demons they might be dealing with, and they
come here and it provides them a safe space where they feel inclusive,” she said. From the moment you step foot on Ms Grundy’s site, the eyes struggle to find something “new”, from the recycled pots, to the once-loved tables, rusted signs and labels - everything has had a prior life. “That is very deliberate. It’s about sustainability. Even down to the wheel on my wheelbarrow, I needed a new one, and thought, where can I get one that’s not new,” she said. “My underlying message is all about sustainability and helping to reduce waste and environmental issues,“ she said.

Reform on the way for Green Wedge By Taylah Eastwell The lush green rolling hills, open pockets of land and ability to produce food and wine are what make the Yarra Ranges so beautifully unique. Just a stone’s throw from built-up suburbs and retail hubs, the options for rural living across the Ranges only exist due to the careful management of Green Wedge zones. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Planning, Design and Development Kath McClusky said the region has a long history of legislated planning protection which has prevented ad hoc planning decisions, land speculation and urban sprawl. “This protection has played a substantial role in the growth of the Yarra Valley as a highvalue agriculture and tourism region,” she said. “Yarra Ranges Green Wedge land plays an incredibly important role in protecting productive agricultural land, rare and significant biodiversity, recreation and tourism facilities as well as rural industry (quarries and forestry).” With the State Government currently reviewing how it can strengthen legislative and policy frameworks to protect Green Wedge Zones into the future, a number of options for reform have been mooted. One recommendation is to legislate a ‘right to farm’. Such laws, if introduced, would mean necessary agricultural work on farms would not constitute a ‘nuisance’, provided they were conducted lawfully and the zoning of the land supported agricultural use as a primary purpose. Right to farm legislation is being considered due to concerns raised during community consultation indicating that conflicts consistently arise between neighbours over inappropriate use and development of farming areas. According to the government’s consultation paper, the laws would be aimed at minimising land use conflicts that constrain the ability to farm, ensuring buffers separate agricultural land from other land uses such as residential developments and ensuring planning regulations do not hinder farming activities. Right to farm legislation is currently in force in NSW and Tasmania. If enacted, laws would mean those who build residential developments close to existing farms would be responsible for adapting to the existing farm environment. The person who introduces the new development would be responsibile for mitigating the impacts of lawful farming, including dust, noise and odour. Ms McClusky said Yarra Ranges Council’s planning team works with applicants to ensure planning applications meet the requirements of the planning scheme and encourage land owners to get in touch to discuss any pro-
Life lost An elderly man has passed away in hospital after being hit by a car in Ringwood earlier this month. The 74-year-old man was crossing Maroondah Highway when he was struck by a Ford Explorer about 11.20am on 5 March. He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away on Saturday 27 March. The driver of the Explorer, a 33-year-old Mooroolbark woman, and her two passengers were not injured in the incident. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing to anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au
Operation Nexus Operation Nexus was conducted by Victoria Police over the Easter long weekend targeting speed, drink and drug driving and mobile phone use. With large numbers of people travelling long distances or on unfamiliar roads to get to holiday destinations, police were on the lookout for fatigue, asking drivers to plan their trip and rest regularly when on Victoria’s busy roads. Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Driver Reviver sites were operating at 25 roadside locations to encourage drivers to stop, rest and refresh.
Drone found Lilydale Police are seeking to find the owner of a white drone. The drone was found in Coldstream about 10 March. If you can provide evidence that you are the owner, contact the Lilydale Police Property Office on 9739 2300.

Ms Priest said she held grave concerns about work being carried out on a property adjacent to hers. She claims her neighbour has altered the native landscape with trucks coming “at all hours of the day” to deliver and dump soil, clay and gravel into “what was a natural gully” on the property. “He recently purchased 20 acres in a Green Wedge Zone in Narre Warren East and has been coming out and doing work. He is bringing in all this dirt and gravel and filling what was a dam. There is a little stream further along that he hasn’t touched yet, but he is filling up the gully to a level that I assume is more workable for him,” Ms Priest said. “I’d like him to show a bit more respect for

the land he purchased and what was already there. People should not be allowed to move in if they want to totally disregard the character of the land.” Ms McClusky confirmed her department was aware of Ms Priest’s concerns. “Council is aware of the matter and we are currently talking with the property owners to ensure any works are brought into compliance with the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme,” Ms McClusky said. “We encourage land owners to get in touch or use our ePlanning platform to discuss any planning proposals for their land.” According to Planning Victoria, anyone who contravenes the planning scheme is guilty of an offence and subjects themselves to the risk of hefty fines and enforcement action. The Mail contacted Ms Priest’s neighbour for comment.
Lilydale Police are seeking public assistance in relation to a road rage incident and assault in Lilydale recently. The incident allegedly occurred outside Anytime Fitness in Main St, Lilydale around 9am on 1 March. Police would like to speak to the driver of a Nissan Patrol with a black bull bar and roof racks about the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Senior Constable Campbell on 9739 2300long weekend after a number of recent thefts in the area.
Drug driver nabbed A P-plate driver intercepted by police in Lilydale recently returned a positive test for illicit drugs after only having his licence for three days. The 18-year-old man from Montrose underwent an oral fluid test at the scene on Sunday 14 March, which has been sent away for testing. If confirmed, the man will lose his licence for six months.

Old bakehouse’s new life By Taylah Eastwell Emerald Community House will soon offer a complete community food hub out of the National Trust listed Old Emerald Bakehouse, after years of restoration works on the building. ECH House Co-ordinator Mary Farrow said the community house recently received state government funding to open an all-new foodhub in the old bakehouse. “We are going to be selling and providing food in the community that is otherwise not accessible, bulk food and food for diverse diets, in addition to our free food program,” she said. “It will help people who have to go off the hill to get things, or those who want to buy in bulk or support local community food providers as we are going to invite local providers to sell their things in the shop,” she said. Ms Farrow said sales from the food hub will help fund the house’s free food movement, which it currently funds on at its own expense. The community house also self-funded the restorations, which included paying three engineers, installing a brand new roof and new insulation. The National Trust listed bakehouse is leased to ECH by the Commonwealth Bank and sits behind Emerald’s CBA building. The bakehouse is home to a rare, century old wood-fired oven that dates back to 1914. Ms Farrow said there were a couple of bakers in Emerald during that time and the oven was a part of a bakery at one end of town that burnt down. The oven components were relocated and built into the current bakehouse in the 1930’s. “It was where the bread was made and laid on tables and shoved into the oven before it was loaded onto a horse and cart in the laneway and distributed to the people in the community,” she said.
Restorations of the Old Bakehouse included a brand new roof. According to Ms Farrow, the building was dormant for decades, used sparingly in the 70’s as a music room but “sat there derelict” until the community house got involved by doing tours of the bakehouse as part of their PAVE Festival. “From there we arranged to get a lease with the bank of the building and grounds to run a community enterprise in the bakehouse,” she said. The bakery is the only building in the Emerald village that runs “totally of the grid”. “We got funding from the Federal Government to put on solar on one of our buildings, so we chose the bakehouse. It has solar and a battery and a powerpoint for a generator to back up the battery should we not have sun,” Ms Farrow said. ECH also purchased a generator with state government funding, which Ms Farrow says

Anzac Day tribute When Covid-19 restrictions plagued Anzac Day commemorations last year, members of the Dandenong Ranges RSL were saddened that they could not pay tribute to one of their late life members. Kevin Dowsley sadly passed away in January 2020, and while the club couldn’t commemorate his life last year, they intend to do so at this year’s Anzac Day ceremony. Dandenong Ranges RSL president Bob Richards said paying tribute to Mr Dowsley is “very important to all members”. “He was a past president and the last living male RSL Life Member of our sub-branch,” Mr Richards said. Despite his age and fragility in later years, Mr Dowsley remained an active member of the sub-branch and a “staunch supporter” at the club’s commemorative events, such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. Between 1987 and 2005, Mr Dowsley held the position of president for nine years, followed by seven years as vice-president. RSL members during that time know all too
well how close the sub-branch came to permanently closing, but with Mr Dowsley’s determination and strong leadership, the club remains today - with a club house in Sassafras and a presence that covers the entire region. Mr Dowsley was titled a Life Member of the RSL in 1999, one of just three members to have been recognised in the 90 years since the sub-branch was formed. He was also a well respected life member and founding member of the Olinda-Ferny Creek Football Netball Club, with his involvement spanning the entire 74year history of the club at the time he passed. In the early days, Mr Dowsley served as a Private in the Australian Army during the end of World War II, from 14 August 1945 until 22 January 1947. He was a member of the Australian Army Services Corps and saw operational service in Rabaul on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea between January and July 1946. Mr Dowsley is greatly missed by the Dandenong Ranges RSL. Club members will pay tribute to his life at their Anzac Day service at Sassafras Reserve at 10.30am on 25 April.
Yarra Ranges Council voted to endorse the Pandemic Recovery Framework as the guiding document that will inform its priorities and investment in support of community recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic a meeting on 23 March. The framework allows for an ‘agile’ approach to respond to the changing needs of the community over the next four years as the true impacts of the pandemic unfold.
Multi-level car park on the way Councillors voted to approve a planning application to construct a multi-level commuter car park, alteration of access to a Road Zone Category 1 and removal of vegetation at 2A Belgrave-Gembrook Road, but not without some alternate recommendations being made. These recommendations included altering the permit conditions to allow for infrastructure that will enable future electric vehicle charging, as well as having a suitably qualified ecologist on hand to handle the flora and fauna with care.

Club brings the sweet gift of Easter joy By Taylah Eastwell The Rotary Club of Emerald and District delivered some Easter joy to residents of Emerald Glades recently. Community Service Member at the Rotary Club of Emerald and District Susi Wilson said Rotarians decided to give the residents Easter gifts after the loving feedback they received after delivering presents to the Glades at Christmas. “They really enjoyed our presents for Christmas, so we want to do something nice for them again,” she said. The sweet treats were delivered on Thursday 1 April and were given to residents on Easter Sunday, including Easter bunny table decorations that were placed on the tables during the residents Sunday celebrations. “The primary school created little Easter baskets, it is good to involve the little ones and create that connection between the young and the elderly,” Ms Wilson said. While the Rotarians could not deliver the goodies in person, they dropped them off at the door and hoped the gifts made residents “feel they are still a part of the community”. “We wanted to show them we are always here for them, even if we can’t be close, just to brighten up their lives a little bit,” Ms Wilson said.
Pandemic recovery
Council voted to approve a variation of the Development of Environmental Effects Statement (EES) for Warburton Mountain Bike Destination (WMBD), to increase the contract budget to undertake the EES from $980,000 to an upper amount of $1,500,000. Council voted to ensure that all costs associated with the EES process and incurred against the existing overall budget allocation for the project. Council’s agenda provides an update on the EES progress, schedule and budget and details the reasons behind why the EES schedule has been delayed.

Council moved to again seek urgent action by the Department of Transport to have the pedestrian bridge at McMahons Creek, Reefton reinstated by writing to Minister for Roads Ben Carroll, Cindy McLeish MP and executive director for the Metropolitan South East Region of the Department of Transport. This is the third time that this issue has been raised at Council, with safety being of high concern for local community members at the McMahons Creek location where school children and locals are forced to walk dangerously along the roads edge with a lack of visibility of passing traffic. The removal of the bridge in 2017 has brought to light this issue.

A history in the making The Australian Garden exhibit - the first and only Australian garden exhibit to win the Best in Show Gold Medal at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show in London in 2013 - will soon be recreated at the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens in Olinda. In the show’s more than 100-year history, it was the first and only time that the judges reached a unanimous decision for the Best in Show Gold Medal. This incredible achievement was accomplished by two local residents, renowned Melbourne landscape designer Phillip Johnson and leading horticulturist Wes Fleming and now we will have a permanent display so both local residents and visitors to the Dandenong Ranges can enjoy this wonderful garden. I was delighted to recently announce the State Government’s additional commitment of $2.8 million for the recreation of the Australian Garden through the Stimulus Round of the Regional Tourism Investment Fund. This investment in shovel ready projects is on top of $1 million already committed to the project at the last State election and over $300,000 raised through philanthropic fundraising and will inject immediate stimulus into our local economy. The construction of a permanent garden will be a massive drawcard for the Dandenong Ranges and will attract visitors from around the country and the globe. Once completed, this project will also be complemented by the State Government’s investment in the Olinda Precinct which has already delivered a wonderful

Talk to gardening experts 2021 sees the return of the Yarra Valley Autumn Plant Fair and it is building up to be a great one. It is the first full plant fair since Covid hit in March last year forcing organisers to cancel the 2020 autumn and spring fairs. The Yarra Valley Autumn Plant Fair is a stunning event where visitors can spend a day or two looking at and learning about a wide range of plants, how to use them, how to grow them and how they fit into a home garden. The fair is organised by the Larkman family, long term residents and nursery operators in the Yarra Valley and passionate growers of all sorts of plants. “We have invited other passionate plant people from all sectors of the nursery industry. When world-views clash PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN willingly and deliberately trashed the Afghan restaurant owned by Mina’s stepfather. Michael’s parents claim ignorance that organisations like theirs can and sometimes do help to breed hate speech, religious discrimination and even racially based harassment and violence. He now faces a choice – either he continues to blindly adhere to their views, or he tries to explore other perspectives and make his own, independent decisions. Both Michael’s and Mina’s parents want their children to be happy, healthy, safe and successful. Indeed, all parents want their children to have a fair and open mind, to respect others in ways that they themselves want to be respected, and to have empathy for those in need and pain. All parents aspire to be good role models, so that their children learn to contribute to society. Really, no one wants their kids to grow up as bigots. Nor is there any kid desiring to see their parents as bigots. Randa Abdel-Fattah’s When Michael Met Mina (Pan Macmillan Australia, 2016) won the Prize for Writing for Young Adults and the People’s Choice Award in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards 2017. While this thought-provoking book is suitable for teenage readers, parents may also find it informing and inspiring.

Friends care for creek By Taylah Eastwell Friends of Olinda Creek is celebrating the success of a recent community initiative aimed at getting new and younger volunteers involved in building biodiversity along the creek. Friends of Olinda Co-ordinator Paul Dempsey organised the community rally on Sunday 28 March, describing it as a “success” with members of the community showing interest in the initiative. “People over the years have come through asking if we have working bees. So we thought we would try and involved more people and get young ones involved,” he said. “A lot of people have been enjoying what is happening in Lions Park and it’s inspiring confidence in the whole thing,” he said. Mr Dempsey said a number of people came along, helping collect bags of rubbish from alongside the creek and clearing an “impressive” area of periwinkle. Members of Friends of Olinda Creek have decided to meet on the first Sunday of each month to continue works towards building biodiversity and enhancing wildlife along the creek. “I had a great connection with this guy on Sunday, him and his wife are keen to come along once a month,” Mr Dempsey said. Mr Dempsey said it was great to see some interest from younger generations, with a young woman stopping past, who was unable to stay and help, taking the time to share the initiative to her social media. “For a few years it hasn’t really been ‘friends’, its been more like ‘friend’,” Mr Dempsey said.

“We’re very, very grateful on behalf of the children, whose lives that it will impact,” she said. “We have absolutely put that money to good use.” Ms Beard shared that the $8400 donation from Branded is aiding 112 children in need with care packs filled with toiletries, spare changes of clothes, a toy and more. A worthy brand It’s February, but Santa Claus’ gifts keep on coming for several charity organisations who benefited from a partnership between Saint Nick and Seville’s Branded Burger Bar. The burger bar came to the rescue when they partnered with Santa, who had seen his role replaced at Chirnside Park Shopping
But after the weekend, things are looking up, with conversations also struck up with another community organisation and talks in the works for a collaborative planting event on World Environment Day on June 5. Mr Dempsey also said the group plans to “enhance and beautify the creek” and create more access and install some seating so it becomes a “healthier place and an enjoyable healing space”. “When it is more attractive, the young ones will be more encouraged to be involved and keep it going, which we need because biodiversity is in trouble in Lilydale as it is everywhere,” he said. “It changes the energy of the space and the whole energy of the middle of town, by lifting the space and cheering it up, which makes people throw less litter and people feel less angry,” he said. Randa Abdel-Fattah’s When Michael Met Mina opens with two teenagers meeting at a rally for refugees – standing on opposite sides. It seems easy to immediately understand Mina’s plight. Mina and her family fled Afghanistan after the Taliban murdered her father. She witnessed her brother’s death in a refugee camp in Pakistan before arriving in Australia by boat. Having been finally processed and released into the community, she only wants to live an ordinary life. But there are those in Mina’s adopted country, in her neighbourhood, in her school, who demand that she and her family be grateful for their good fortune. Refugees like her are expected to abandon their memories and beliefs in order to conform to the stereotype of silent and assimilated “ethnics” on the fringe of our society. Mina’s stepfather is falsely accused of selling halal food to fund ISIS terrorists. As a result, his restaurant is trashed, its walls stained with hateful words such as F**k Off We’re Full. His words are heart-wrenching: “I cannot return to my homeland. And so I must simply stay in somebody else’s homeland, as an outsider and a guest. I am the guest who brings a gift of food to their host. Except what I think more and more is that they do not eat the food, they eat us here... When they don’t like the taste of us, when we have too much flavour and spice, and do not follow their recipe, we are like indigestion and they want to vomit us back to where we came from.” In contrast, it may be difficult to appreciate Michael’s position. Michael grew up adoring his parents, who are well-educated, white-collared, highly rational, and widely respected. They are also the founders of a political party called “Aussie Values”, whose members

Advice to help kick goals With the football starting up again the Star Mail caught up with local podiatrist Ryan Cornwall to talk about footy feet. “For me, good footy starts with good boots” Ryan says. A podiatrist who knows what it’s like to strap on the wrong pair of boots. Ryan suffered a stress fracture in his foot as a junior when he chose a footy boot that put more pressure under his big toe than what it could handle. “Back then I used to get so sore in my big toe after the first few games of the season. This was pre-podiatry for me so I had no idea
what was happening, and like most teenagers I thought I knew everything and it would settle down eventually. It didn’t.” So this year after the missed 2020 season Ryan and his fellow podiatrists Laura, Tanya and Jasmine at PridePlus Health in Emerald and Monbulk are on a mission. “We’re here to keep everyone playing footy and not missing games with foot injuries” Ryan’s most important advice is to get your footy boots right for you. He has three main things to look out for. “Make sure your boots fit properly, nowa-

Don’t go jamming wide feet into narrow boots” he says. “Next, get the right midsole for your foot needs and position. If you’re covering a lot of ground like Trent Cotchin make sure your boots have a layer of cushioning and a thicker sole under the heel. This takes load away from your calf muscles to allow you to go furtherwithout getting tired. “Finally, get the stud pattern right. Key position and rucks who jump and land should use smaller studs to reduce landing injuries. Blades and moulds work well here. The trade off is the risk of slipping over and getting a spray from
the coach. I’d rather slip than do my ACL.” Ryan is also first to admit that in the past podiatrists have struggled to fit orthotics into footy boots due to old style innersoles being big and chunky. He’s proud to say that his team were one of the first in Melbourne to be 3D printing the thinnest and lightest modern orthotics that can fit comfortably inside footy boots to reduce injury risk. “If I could have treated 16 year old Ryan’s feet with what we know now as podiatrists I’d have had a much longer career. Bloods gear up for 2021 By Nick Creely Olinda Ferny Creek understands that even though it placed seventh in 2019 with five wins and 11 losses, it wasn’t truly reflective of the competitiveness, hunger and development of the group. The Bloods banked some super wins, and pushed some of the Premier Division’s top sides, and in those 11 losses learnt valuable lessons that it will take into 2021. Bloods coach Brendan Donovan said that 2019 was a season that he looks back on as a crucial one in forging the path forward. “We broke it down into 10-to-20-minute passages of bad concentration through lack of depth, and probably lack of talent,” he said. “But we thoroughly enjoyed the challenged - we managed to beat Cranbourne, pushed Berwick hard, and had a reasonable push against Narre at Narre. “And then Cranbourne absolutely torched us down there, it was probably the best opposition we played for the year that day. “But we now know we need to be more attacking, and I think our defence was solid, but it was a whole different way of thinking about our footy. “At 5-11, we had nothing to lose, so we were trying things in games, and if we were fighting for a finals spot we probably wouldn’t have tried. “We’ve recruited well over this summer we’ve tried to change our list demographic a bit.” The Bloods have recruited sharply in the off-season, namely in 25-year-old ex-Collingwood defender Matt Scharenberg, who has arrived at the club after playing 41 games at AFL level, but was cruelled by knee injuries throughout his seven years at the level. Donovan said the club was thrilled to land the prodigiously talented defender. “The biggest thing with Matt straight off is how polite, and well-mannered he is,” he said. “His first session, he went around and introduced himself to all the players on the ground. “He’s unassuming - he doesn’t really like the limelight, so we’re treating him like anyone else at our club, and he’s enjoyed that. “We’re really lucky - it was bloody exciting behind the scenes, and we were so thrilled to get it done.” The Bloods have also brought back South Croydon star Pat Crosier alongside his brother Mat, Ben Watson from Upwey Tecoma, as well as recruited Trent Falzon and Alex Mackinnon from North Ringwood, and James Royal-Young from Upper Ferntree Gully, with Donovan also saying that 2017 premiership players Dale Rohrmann, Jay Rankin and Brendan Cooling as well as potentially a few others to return. Sean Atkinson, Mitch Low-Morris and Dylan Arnold are also expected to return from injury.

He said that the list demographic has shifted somewhat, with the youth expected to get chances throughout the season. “We think we played our best side in Round 18 in 2019 against Wandin, and my gut feel is there will be some who will retire or not play,” he said. “We’ve increased our senior depth by about 12 or 13 players. “Pat will be a massive addition - he was in South Croydon’s Team of the Decade and one of the premier EFL defensive forwards in the league, so he’ll come back with his brother (Mat) and add plenty of speed to the outside. “Overall, its looking good, but it’s the kids
coming through, we’ve got a couple of them at Eastern which is great for them, and our Under 19s are going to be a really solid side as well.” A huge away clash against reigning premiers Narre Warren awaits Donovan’s group in the season opener on Saturday 17 April. It’s an almighty challenge - but one Donovan’s group will not take a backwards step from. “I think Narre are still the benchmark,” he said. “When we were offered the opportunity to open the season, we didn’t hesitate to accept the challenge. “What better way to set up your season than to take on the reigning premiers - I don’t know any footy club in Australia that doesn’t want to take on the team that unfurls the flag. “We’ll have a look at them, they’ve lost
Picture: ROB CAREW some absolutely stars, but at the same time, good clubs evolve, and it gives more kids a go - they’ve got so much talent, they’re the most skilful side in the competition. “Narre are going to be at the top of tree I think.” But overall, Donovan expects the Premier Division to be a closely-fought season where anything can happen. “Every game is going to be huge,” he said. “You only need to lose a bit of cohesion, or have a bad run with injury and you can fall away, or the opposite to that, if you have a good month of footy you can really set yourself up. “It’s exciting, and its good for the league Pakenham and Doveton come in, and they’re good grounds to play at. “The old Valley sides are really building and stepping up the challenge nicely I think.”
Sod turns on redevelopment of Knox netball courts Highly anticipated upgrades and expansions at the Knox Regional Netball Centre are a step closer to beginning, with an official turning of the sod occurring on 29 March. Bayswater MP Jackson Taylor broke the ground to officially start work on the redevelopment of the indoor courts at the centre, funded through a $5 million grant from the government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program. With 18 outdoor and two indoor courts, the Knox Regional Netball Centre is home to over 2,900 players, including Mountain District Netball Association and teams in the Eastern Football and Netball League. It is believed the netball centre had been struggling to cope with its growing demand, due to limited indoor court spaces. The centre redevelopment will involve construction of an additional two indoor netball courts to Netball Victoria standards, complete with amenities including toilets, change rooms and storerooms. try, landscaping and more car parks. Once complete, the redeveloped centre will provide a venue for local netball to host more teams and competitions. It is also hoped it will enable an expansion on local development and pathway programs. Member for Bayswater, Jackson Taylor said the investment will support local economies by creating economic activity and jobs. “Congratulations to the teams here from the Mountain District Netball Association and Eastern Football and Netball League this boost will go a long way to support the growing number of people in Knox keen to get involved in local sport and recreation,” he said. Mr Taylor acknowledged the Australian Government and Knox City Council for their commitment and financial contribution to the project.
