By Jed Lanyon One year on from the beginning of construction of upgrades to the Maroondah Highway and works are still taking place on the road despite a predicted completion date of mid-2020.

The Maroondah Highway upgrades have been plagued with delays with poor weather conditions being blamed, while the State Gov-

ernment said additional upgrades were required after work had started on the project.

The Department of Transport’s acting director for safer roads, Leong Yew, apologised for the delays as the works neared completion.

“We’re upgrading this section of the Maroondah Highway to save lives and prevent serious injury ... As the project was being deliv-

ered it became clear that additional road improvements were required to improve the quality of the road.

“We apologise for the inconvenience that delays resulting from additional safety works and weather delays has caused to all local residents and drivers as we deliver this important project.”

Monthly rainfall data in Coldstream highlighted the months of April, May, August and October to have significantly higher average rainfall, each month experiencing about 25 plus millimetres of rain, while the month of April experienced about 100 millimetres higher than the monthly average rainfall, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Sole-ful art in debut show While it’s a loosely kept secret that Healesville’s resident cobbler, Peter Brocklehurst is a retired singer with several gold records under his belt, but he’s not the only one in the family with a talent in the arts as his wife, Viviana is a soon to be hung emerging artist.

The talented painter’s inaugural exhibition opened on Good Friday at Studio Malka, next door to the Brocklehursts’ shoe repair business.

Painting has been part of Ms Brocklehurt’s life since childhood. A close acquaintance had killed her confidence and it wasn’t until Mr Brocklehurst encouraged her to work through her emotions on canvas that she began to trust her artistic expression.

“To me, Viviana is her canvas,” Mr Brocklehurst said. “When I met her she lacked all selfworth. It had been knocked out of her.

“But my missus has always been an individual and slowly she began to believe in herself and become confident as an artist.”

Ms Brocklehurst, whose creativity is evident in their shop’s rustic paraphernalia, spoke of her talent being stifled.

“As a kid I used to draw all the time. I lost part of myself when someone close to me said I wasn’t talented,” she said.

The exhibition is titled ‘Moods’ because each piece reflects a slice of what Ms Brocklehurst refers to as her “multi-faceted” personality.

“One painting is like living an average day with her,” Mr Brocklehurst said. “You can see sadness, vitality, love, gentleness, passion, her spikiness. Her personality is laid bare in colour and form. She wears both her heart and her art on her sleeve.”

He points to one special canvas in which the ashes of his daughter, Sally, who died from cancer, have been lovingly incorporated into the design.

CFA needs our help

By Jed Lanyon Construction work has started for Coldstream CFA’s new fire station as the brigade continues community fundraising efforts, despite being limited by Covid-19.

In March last year, captain Sean Bethell shared the news that the CFA would be moving ahead with building a new station for Coldstream’s fire brigade. The plans are now 12 years in the making as the project experienced many “false starts”.

Mr Bethell shared that earthworks had begun on the 7 Killara Road site and that he is hopeful for a July or August completion date.

He said that while the CFA is funding the new station, they would be relying on community fundraising and donations to cover additional costs and upgrades that would be placed on the brigade.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan joined Harriett Shing MP, executive director infrastructure services Anthony Ramsay, District 13 assistant chief fire officer Colin Brown and Coldstream captain Sean Bethell for a sod turn for the $1.5 million Killara Road fire station on Friday 26 March.

Mr Heffernan said it was going to be exciting to see the new station take shape over the next few months.

“Coldstream is a really busy brigade that attends fires, motor vehicle accidents and many other emergency incidents on the urban fringe

“As CFA moves forward as a volunteer-only firefighting organisation, we are committed to providing our firefighters with the best infrastructure, equipment and support that we can so we can continue to fulfill our mission of saving lives and property.”

The new fit-for-purpose, three engine bay station will provide the Coldstream CFA’s 40 strong members with a large meeting room for training and brigade meetings and better amenities including male and female change rooms, on-site parking, workshop, storage and other operational support areas.

Mr Bethell said the large meeting room will allow Coldstream CFA to host nearby theory training sessions for new recruits across the Yarra Valley, while also being available for community needs.

“It will be utilised not only by our brigade but by the group of brigades that are around us,” he said.

“For the brigade, it’s a big improvement to our capacity to support our own and neighbouring communities.”

The brigade soon plans to be collecting community donations at a farmer’s market at Punt Road Winery as well as collection points at a few traffic intersections, Covid restrictions permitting.

“It’s probably all we’ve got the ability to do at the moment, we’re also hoping to do a letterbox drop to businesses in the Coldstream response area to see if they want to help support us with donations,” Mr Bethell said.

The brigade is hoping to tally $65,000 in the short term that will cover the costs of equipment upgrades and modifications to the building, while Mr Bethell said he has plans to see solar panels installed in the new station.

“Hopefully it will allow us to serve the community better than what we have been with our old facilities,” he said.

Maroondah Highway end in sight From page 1 The months of June, July, September, and November showed slightly lower or similar monthly rainfall averages in Coldstream.

Mr Yew said nine kilometres of safety barriers had been installed and intersection improvements across four locations are almost complete. Works had been given an adjusted completion date of the end of March, but that is now set to be pushed back to the end of April.

The works between Stringybark Creek and Maxwells Road were delayed due to wet weather and a number of other construction challenges that required changes to the original scope and additional works, according to the Department of Transport.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish has been vocal about the delays to construction along the road.

“Maroondah Highway roadworks have been an issue for over a year now,” she said.

“People are so frustrated seeing roadworks continue elsewhere, not being informed and speculating as to why works have been delayed. It is time for the government to come clean and get the road completed.”

The roadworks came under fire from Coldstream CFA captain Sean Bethell in Sep-

tember last year. The brigade captain said he was frustrated to see the lowered speed limit.

“For the fire brigade, it’s going to make it harder for us to get around traffic at the slower limit of 80km/h. When traffic was doing 100km/h, our likelihood of catching up to the next group of traffic was lower.

“Now that you’re going slower, we’re more likely to be in an accident because you’re passing more traffic grouped together.”

At the time, the Department of Transport said the speed limit reduction increased journey times between Coldstream and Healesville by about 90 seconds.

Mr Bethell held concerns about roadside barriers installed close to the edge of the

road. His preference would have been to see additional overtaking lanes as he feared the barriers would prevent emergency vehicles from attending roadside incidents without blocking the highway.

The Department said the new roadside barriers provide regular breaks, with no length of barrier running longer than one kilometre. These breaks include property access points allowing vehicles to pull over or for emergency services to access the roadside.

Roadworks started around March last year coinciding with the Covid-19 pandemic as the Department of Transport planned for a mid-2020 finish to the infrastructure upgrades. The project will bring a lowered speed limit of 80km/h from 100km/h and improved turning lanes between Healesville and Coldstream in the heart of the Yarra Valley’s wine region.

The Maroondah Highway between Coldstream and Healesville was identified as a high-risk route with 13 people being seriously injured and tragically three people losing their lives in crashes between July 2013 and December 2018, according to the Department of Transport.

Ringwood incident A male pedestrian has died in hospital after being hit by a car in Ringwood on 5 March.

The 74-year-old was crossing the Maroondah Highway when he was struck by a Ford Explorer about 11.20am.

The Ringwood man was taken to hospital however died on 27 March.

The driver of the Explorer, a 33-year-old Mooroolbark woman, and her two passengers were not injured.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing to anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

Rainfall Healesville experienced a decent soaking of rain last month, according to local resident Alma Mitchell.

Ms Mitchell recorded 81.7mm of rain in March over 16 days, compared with 69.4mm in just 10 days during the same month last year.

Over in Coldstream West, local resident Peter Stuart recorded 53.0ml of rain down from the 65ml recorded in the same month last year.

Operation Nexus Operation Nexus was conducted by Victoria Police over the Easter long weekend targeting speed, drink and drug driving and mobile phone use.

With large numbers of people travelling long distances or on unfamiliar roads to get to holiday destinations, police were on the lookout for fatigue, asking drivers to plan their trip and rest regularly when on Victoria’s busy roads.

Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Driver Reviver sites were operating at 25 roadside locations to encourage drivers to stop, rest and refresh.

Too fast A 48 year old male driver was detected travelling at 108km/h in a 70km/h zone on the Melba Highway in Coldstream on Good Friday.

The driver received a $620 fine and will have his license suspended for six months.

A cold case Yarra Glen Police are investigating the theft of a hot water service from the Yarra Glen Bowls Club between 2am and 4am on 20 March. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 9730 1296.

A Bad Friday Police detected illegal activity on multiple occasions on local roads on Good Friday.

An 18 year old female probationary driver, who had her license for three weeks, was detected speeding over 30 km/h over the speed limit on the Burwood Highway in Upwey. She received a $454 fine and will have her license suspended for three months.

A 20 year old unaccompanied male learner permit driver was detected speeding 150km/h in a 100km/h zone on Eastlink in Wantirna.

The driver returned an EBT result of 0.076 and tested positive for illicit drugs. His vehicle is set to be impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1355 to be charged on summons for all matters.

What is something people might not know about you?

Many people don’t realise I’m a passionate Rotarian, and that someone my age is able to join Rotary! It’s a great place for anyone to give back to the community.

What was your most memorable moment?

Why? Last year, I had my directing debut on Netflix for an episode of a TV show I worked on, and it was very surreal to see my work on the biggest streaming platform on the planet, sitting inbetween some of the biggest TV shows!

What would your last meal be?

It would definitely have to be my mother’s homecooked pasta bake!

What do you love most about the Yarra Ranges?

It’s such a beautiful place to live - You could point a camera in any direction and struggle to take a bad photo.

What event, past, present, or future, would you like to witness?

There’s too many to mention, but I would love to witness the passing of a treaty with our First Nations people in the very near future.

Favourite book?

I’m not much of a big reader! When I do find time, I love to read leadership, self-improvement, or biographies from inspiring people.

Which four guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

Probably close friends or family members who passed away too soon.

What is something you’re looking forward to?

I’m excited to begin my second year as Healesville Rotary’s president for 2021-2022!

IN BRIEF Pandemic recovery Yarra Ranges Council voted to endorse the Pandemic Recovery Framework as the guiding document that will inform its priorities and investment in support of community recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic a meeting on 23 March.

The framework allows for an ‘agile’ approach to respond to the changing needs of the community over the next four years as the true impacts of the pandemic unfold.

Multi-level car park on the way Councillors voted to approve a planning application to construct a multi-level commuter car park, alteration of access to a Road Zone Category 1 and removal of vegetation at 2A Belgrave-Gembrook Road, but not without some alternate recommendations being made.

These recommendations included altering the permit conditions to allow for infrastructure that will enable future electric vehicle charging, as well as having a suitably qualified ecologist on hand to handle the flora and fauna with care.

Indigenous women turn history’s page

By Jed Lanyon A new book sharing the stories, poems and artwork of First Nations women in the Yarra Ranges was recently launched.

Balit Bagurrk: Strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women of the Yarra Ranges features historical information, deeply moving personal accounts and photographs to tell the stories of strong Indigenous women whose actions shaped the Yarra Ranges and many who live here.

The book, created by Yarra Ranges Council and Oonah Health and Community Services Aboriginal Corporation (formerly HICSA), and funded by VicHealth’s Gender Equity for the Arts Program, was launched on Tuesday, 9 March at The Memo Healesville.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Fiona McAllister said the women in Balit Bagurrk, have been and continue to be, a source of strength and inspiration to the Yarra Ranges community.

“These stories have been brought together by the community, who wish to share the experiences of the many strong Indigenous women - Aunties, Sisters, Mothers, Grandmothers, Daughters, Elders, leaders and activists - who came before us, who live amongst us and are yet to come,” Cr McAllister said.

“The women honoured in this book have

been and continue to be guardians of knowledge, culture, language and country; carers of family and community; creators and storytellers.

“There are many kinds of strength and this is reflected in the diverse nature of the stories woven through this book.”

Oonah CEO Anne Jenkins told Star Mail, “It’s a book that looks at lots of Aboriginal women, not just Wurundjeri women but they certainly feature, telling their stories and their connections to their country and their culture and community.

“I think most of the people have some kind of connection with the Yarra Ranges, whether they have grown up or lived in the area for some considerable time or have some kind of connection to the area.”

“I think it is a wonderful initiative ... I love the book and I think it’s great. There’s some beautiful craftwork in there by one of my nieces (Brooke Wandin).

“I think that overall feeling of acceptance and people hearing and being able to read those stories is why I participated because I’ve always wanted to inform people as much as you can. I think that goes a long way.”

The project was inspired by the history of Aboriginal community organisations in the

Yarra Ranges from the 1970s by women from the community, including the Healesville Aboriginal Cooperative, Swinburne’s Oona, and HICSA. Using this history as the starting point, First Nations community members contributed stories, poems or visual artwork to the publication that honour Aboriginal women who have been important to them.

“Balit Bagurrk will build knowledge of these women within and outside their communities, shift the historical narrative to include their stories and provide more inspiration for emerging female leaders,” Cr McAllister said.

One of the cultural leaders, Wurundjeri woman Brooke Wandin, who is featured in the book, wrote: “I’m carrying the story of my mob and my Culture. It’s good for me and it’s good for my Ancestors. I belong to the oldest continuous living culture on the planet and one that will never finish.”

The book was created on the lands of the Wurundjeri People and is available for purchase at the Yarra Ranges Council Community Links, Memo in Healesville, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Burrinja Cultural Centre and some independent bookstores.

Council voted to approve a variation of the Development of Environmental Effects Statement (EES) for Warburton Mountain Bike Destination (WMBD), to increase the contract budget to undertake the EES from $980,000 to an upper amount of $1,500,000. Council voted to ensure that all costs associated with the EES process and incurred against the existing overall budget allocation for the project.

Council’s agenda provides an update on the EES progress, schedule and budget and details the reasons behind why the EES schedule has been delayed.

McMahons Creek Bridge Council moved to again seek urgent action by the Department of Transport to have the pedestrian bridge at McMahons Creek, Reefton reinstated by writing to Minister for Roads Ben Carroll, Cindy McLeish MP and executive director for the Metropolitan South East Region of the Department of Transport.

This is the third time that this issue has been raised at Council, with safety being of high concern for local community members at the McMahons Creek location where school children and locals are forced to walk dangerously along the roads edge with a lack of visibility of passing traffic. The removal of the bridge in 2017 has brought to light this issue.

School site purchase Council passed the motion that officers investigate the process and costs to purchase all or part of the State Government-owned land at 150 Cambridge Road, Kilsyth for the purpose of public passive recreation open space.

Monbulk MP James Merlino will also be kept informed, and a report will come to Council outlining the findings of the investigations.

A community petition signed by 7129 residents has shown the level of importance that the community holds in the former site of Pembroke Secondary College in being retained as open space. If Council was to decide to buy the land, it would be required to submit a formal expression of interest that outlines the proposed use for the land.

‘Voice’ earns a top award

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Junction resident Dr Louise Mahler has been chosen as the 2021 Keynote Speaker of the Year by the Professional Speakers Association, an international group representing the world’s top speakers.

Dr Mahler is a patron of Voice of Women in the Yarra Valley, is a foremost expert in body language, voice and human behaviour, with a PhD in business and degrees and masters in Organisational Psychology as well as Music.

She described being named as Keynote Speaker of the Year as a “great thrill and “terrific honour”.

“It means a lifetime of achievement. Only the best people get it and it has been those who I have been honoured by and been in awe of in the past, so it means a lot,” she said.

While, Ms Mahler said she enjoys interacting with people and an audience the most, it was her work speaking on Zoom throughout the pandemic that led to her achievement.

“The work I do has gone online so oftentimes you’re presenting to a blank screen for an hour or two.”

Ms Mahler described it as a “form of cruelty” for her.

“It’s very very difficult and not as rewarding, but that’s where your professional skills come in, you still have to engage and entertain.

People still expect something they can be connected with and it’s hard work.”

In the process of completing her award-winning PhD, Louise observed a ‘missing ingredient’ in corporate leadership around the unsung

wisdom of the mind-body-voice connection she calls Vocal Intelligence.

These blended skills bring powerful observation that elicits discernible, positive change and together with an understanding of the psychology behind high-stake engagements and the structures for handling emotion, combine to build the Mahler Method.

Her work as a body language expert has been used to analyse high-profile interviews and speeches such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent interview with Oprah and addresses by Scott Morrison and Donald Trump.

She explained the process of analysing body language.

“I’m looking for patterns. What patterns are they doing on a regular basis, how are they breaking those patterns, what is the psychological impact of how they are breaking those patterns in certain situations.

“I’m looking at patterns in the eyes, head position, mouth gestures, breath. These are all things that will give away a lot of information and are very useful to help understand others.”

Gift from MP with a TV Star Mail’s reigning footy tipping champion Cindy McLeish is looking forward to defending her crown as the 2021 AFL season gets underway.

The Eildon MP stopped by Healesville last month where her 2020 footy tipping ‘trophy’ is on display.

The unlikely tandem tallied upwards of $30,000 from their family Christmas photos and then selected four charities to each receive

$8400 to help make the lives of children better.

The four recipients of the funds included: Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, A Better Life For Foster Kids, HeartKids and Chum Creek’s Good Life Farm. The organisations shared how the funds had already been put to good use.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids CEO and founder Sally Beard told Star Mail the donation came as a “delightful surprise”.

“We’re very, very grateful on behalf of the children, whose lives that it will impact,” she said. “We have absolutely put that money to good use.”

Ms Beard shared that the $8400 donation from Branded is aiding 112 children in need with care packs filled with toiletries, spare changes of clothes, a toy and more.

More than a name in stone

By Jed Lanyon For nearly eight years the Seville community has worked to have a war memorial built in the township and this Anzac Day the remaining three glass panels of the Seville War Memorial project will finally be unveiled.

The project aimed to provide a commemorative site honouring Seville’s contribution to the national war effort and act as a public work of art.

The memorial will feature four glass panels, each standing four metres high, featuring the images of local servicemen and informative and emotive pieces detailing their stories.

In 2019, the first panel unveiled on Anzac Day dedicated to George Ingram, the Yarra Valley’s only Victoria Cross recipient.

Local historian and chair of the Seville War Memorial Committee Anthony McAleer OAM said Covid-19 had delayed the completion of the project.

“It feels fantastic to tell you the truth ... It’s been a long drawn out process but in the end I can lay claim to what people told me wasn’t possible, was actually possible in the end,” he said.

“We’ve always had our eyes on the end goal because we knew this is something that’s going to be really special, not just for Seville but the entire Yarra Valley community.”

Mr McAleer wanted the Seville War Memorial to stand out amongst the many war memorials, not just in the Yarra Valley but across the nation.

“It’s not just a war memorial with names on it, but a public work of art and at the same time will educate people for generations to come. It’s full of personal stories and images, it certainly has a level of detail that very few war memorials actually have.”

Mr McAleer detailed the stories told on the panels. Bruce Bethune’s features a letter from his sister of the day his family received the telegram notifying them of his death. Another panel features a letter from George Cassidy to his family highlighting the gruesome circumstances of his experience of a charge in the Jordan Valley.

George finished the letter to his family, stat-

ing: “I hope the next time I have energy enough to talk of this country, it will be in our own little dining room”.

“We purposely made it quite emotive,” Mr McAleer said. “This is something we want to carry on for generations to come. In 100 years people can read those stories and still be moved by them and what their experiences were.”

The memorial was funded by Yarra Ranges Council as well as both state and federal governments. Casey MP Tony Smith pledged $75,000 at the last election to see the completion of the project.

“The new Seville War Memorial is an important project for the town, the Yarra Valley and our nation,” Mr Smith said. “The memorial’s striking glass panels convey stories of heroism, service and sacrifice.

“The community’s determination to appropriately remember veterans from the Seville area is to be commended. The new memorial will be a notable feature of the town and for the Yarra Valley.”

A special ceremony will take place at 2pm on 25 April to commemorate Anzac Day and unveil the finished war memorial.

Lessons in print from the Black Saturday bushfires The Arsonist: A Mind on Fire, by Chloe Hooper, was awarded a Judge’s Special Prize in the 2019 Victorian Community Awards. When the Royal Historical Society of Victoria launched its History Bookclub in March 2020, it was their first chosen read.

History remains interesting because we are much more than what happened to us.

How we record, re-write and re-interpret our history at personal and public levels is highly relevant – it reveals how we function as individuals and part of our community.

The Arsonist is a powerful and detailed account of the fires on the outskirts of Churchill in Central Gippsland on February 7, 2009, which killed 11 people and torched 82,000 acres of land. We remember this as part of the Black Saturday bushfires.

The book focuses on the hunt, arrest, trial and conviction of Brendan Sokaluk, who lit two fires and then sat on the roof of his house

Growing up with autism spectrum disorder in a small town in Latrobe Valley, Sokaluk suffered horrendous abuse and discrimination in school and at work. Because he cannot understand how others think and feel, his social and interpersonal skills are poor.

He is frequently treated with disdain and all kinds of prejudiced assumptions.

In an attempt to understand Sokaluk as an individual, the author interviewed both those who tried to clear his name and those who wanted to lock him up. The result is a vivid portrayal of a person whose actions caused devastation, whose motives remain opaque, but whose life experiences defy stereotypes.

The author further interviewed various members of the arson squad and Sokaluk’s legal team, and presented them as men and women in search of truth and justice. These are highly skilled professionals who take pride and responsibility for their work. Yet, they can be distressed and even traumatised by what they find and fight for.

Most importantly, through the testimonies of survivors, as well as the thoughts and emotions of those detectives, forensic scientists and crime scene experts recorded in this

book, we see the issues are not limited to who lit the fires and why.

Instead, ours is a country defined and sustained by fire, and how we manage it can shape our future. Particularly in Latrobe Valley, where the world’s largest brown coal deposits exist – and where many families and communities are still socially and economically disadvantaged – it is estimated that 50 percent of fires here are suspicious.

As American poet Maya Angelou famously said, “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, however, if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” Our memories of Black Saturday can and will help guide our response to an age of fire.

A changing of the guard

By Taylah Eastwell The popular president of Mt Evelyn RSL recently announced his retirement from the top job, after 10 years of taking the club from strength to strength.

Roger Boness served as president of the Mt Evelyn RSL for the past 10 years and is remembered for his remarkable work in improving the club in a variety of ways.

He will now serve as vice-president and remains connected with welfare at the club.

“When I took over the RSL, it was an era where the last of the World War II veterans were passing away, and the RSL’s were struggling to remain viable,” he said.

“We worked on the premise that every vibrant community should have an active RSL, so we spent a lot of time building up the membership and involving ourselves in the Mt Evelyn community.

Mr Boness said the RSL had representatives on the Mt Evelyn Chamber of Commerce, visited all the local schools and sporting clubs and started creating relationships with various community groups and non-for-profit clubs that now enjoy meeting at the club’s hall on Birmingham Road.

During his time, he has increased the subbranch’s membership four times over, made record sales for Anzac badges and poppy sales and contributed to vast improvements to the hall to make it a valuable asset for the community. He also developed Thursday social afternoons as a wellness program for retired members, with all his work winning him the nickname of ‘Front Page Roger’ for all the media attention he attracted.

“The RSL grew at such an extraordinary rate, we started to attract a lot of attention and what happened was we became a major news item. I wear the nickname with a smile. It’s a measure of the success of the RSL,” Mr Boness said.

Mr Boness said the Mt Evelyn RSL became active in ensuring that local schools were brought up to speed with local military history.

“Lots of school kids are now familiar with world conflicts and the effects of those. We had a lot of projects with schools, and we also updated all of our cenotaphs.

“Mt Evelyn RSL assumed responsibility for the Wandin, Silvan and Montrose cenotaphs, if anyone goes around and has a look you can see they have all been upgraded with local military history which is very important for the local community to recognise,” he said.

The club’s work in upgrading and developing the Mt Evelyn Memorial Gardens, completed with the help of other community groups, remains one of Mr Boness’s greatest achievements.

“We used to have an avenue of honour with plaques on the trees, but the Mahogany Gums

We were able to replicate all the names of the veterans on the tree plaques and now have a memorial garden with all of those names and details of people on pedestals around the garden,” he said.

The garden is now enjoyed by Mt Evelyn and surrounding commnunities, with Anzac and Remembrance Day ceremonies at Mt Evelyn being one of the largest public events on the Yarra Ranges calendar.

The former Vietnam veteran, who served as an artillery forward observer in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968, has been awarded a Life Membership of the RSL Victoria, a May-

oral Lifetime Achievement Award from Yarra Ranges Council and Victorian Senior Citizen of the Year over the last decade.

The top job has been handed down “a few generations” to ex-vice president Matthew Crymble, who has been an RSL member for a number of years having served in the Royal Australian Navy.

“Given I’m now a senior citizen, I thought it would be appropriate to get a someone a couple of generations younger to carry out those responsibilities. We are going to give him all of the assistance necessary to keep our RSL prominent in our community for generations to come,” Mr Boness said.

New president Matthew Crymble said he had been learning from Mr Boness over the last couple of years and the pair have “discussed at length” the requirements of the role.

“Roger has done an exceptional job, he has done a lot of great things during his presidency - namely lifting our profile,” Mr Crymble said.

“We will continue to be community minded, I believe Roger has very much lifted our identity, the Mt Evelyn community knows who we are and we play an active role and I plan to continue that work while at the same time ensuring the membership of our club continues to grow,” Mr Crymble said.

A centenary of service honoured in new book

By Taylah Eastwell A local historian, who has spent 30 years researching the history of Lilydale RSL, has compiled his findings in a new book to commemorate 100 years of the Lilydale subbranch.

Mt Evelyn RSL Secretary and Historian Anthony McAleer said he was commissioned by late Lilydale RSL president Don Parsons to compile the book as a way to commemorate the centenary milestone.

“It all started in the lead up to the clubs centenary, which was happening in 2019, they wanted to produce a history of the club seeing as 100 years is a significant event,” Mr McAleer said.

“We got a grant from Yarra Ranges Council that helped cover the cost of researching, writing and designing the book, and the RSL have funded the printing,” he said.

Titled ‘A Century of Service’, the book tells the story of the club, formed in early 1919 by World War I veterans at a meeting at Lilydale’s Athenaeum Hall.

Goode was the first man to enlist in the AIF from Lilydale in 1914, and when he returned in late 1918, he got together with a number of other veterans and formed the RSL, with their very first meeting being in the Athenaeum building in Lilydale,” Mr McAleer explained.

“The history is certainly a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, it is really only still around because over the years hundreds of members have dedicated themselves to the values of the RSL and serving and looking after their mates, that’s all that’s kept it going over the years,” he said.

Mr McAleer said around 400 copies have been printed, which will be available on fundraising tables at shopping centres when RSL members sell their ANZAC tokens and at the Lilydale club.

The book will be launched on Sunday 11 April at 11.00am in the Athenaeum Theatre, in Lilydale, with special guest Jaime Twidale, CEO of RSL Victoria.

Later that afternoon the club will also unveil the new marble soldier on the top of the Lilydale War Memorial at a special ceremony at 2.00pm at the Ralph Goode Reserve in Main Street, Lilydale.

The puggle released back into a Healesville creek.

Baby platypus rescued are leaving their mum’s burrows for the first time,” explained Sanctuary keeper and platypus expert Dr Jess Thomas.

“It’s quite easy for puggles to become disoriented and wander away from their rivers, which leaves them very vulnerable.”

The little boy weighed just a few hundred grams when he was brought to the Sanctuary last month, but Dr Thomas is happy he now

weighs in at a healthy half-kilo.

“Once he was back at a healthy weight and old enough to take care of himself, we had to find a safe place to release him back into the wild,” said Dr Thomas.

“The creek that runs through Healesville Sanctuary is actually home to a thriving population of wild platypus, so that was an ideal spot for our baby plat to go.”

Keepers have fitted the puggle with a temporary radio transmitter so they can monitor him while he gets his bearings in his new home.

Have your voice heard I recently attended a breakfast for local business representatives, and had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with some of the many people who choose to run their businesses in the Yarra Ranges.

More than 98 per cent of businesses in Yarra Ranges have less than 20 employees so have been heavily impacted in 2020. This will be a tough week for many of those business owners and their employees, with the end of the JobKeeper payment. Though we’ve come so far in the last few months, so many of us are still adjusting to a Covid-normal way of living and working.

We’ll continue to offer ongoing support through our economic development teams, continue reaching out to businesses and ensuring their stories, their experiences and their needs influence the work we do at Council.

We’re not looking for an essay - though you’re welcome to write one if you have many things to say. If your submission on a project is a single sentence, that’s fine, as long as it reflects your thoughts. We read over every submission and adapt our plans accordingly.

from you - to hear about what you want to see in the Yarra Ranges in the future, both near and far - so we can provide those things.

Our business community, still rebuilding and adapting; our community members volunteering, living on unsealed roads, visiting our libraries, pools and community links; those who have great ideas for community projects, or constructive criticism about how we can improve projects already on the go; our sporting club members, pet owners, young people and older adults - we’d love to hear from you, and your voice will shape what we do.

Talk to gardening experts 2021 sees the return of the Yarra Valley Autumn Plant Fair and it is building up to be a great one.

It is the first full plant fair since Covid hit in March last year forcing organisers to cancel the 2020 autumn and spring fairs.

The Yarra Valley Autumn Plant Fair is a stunning event where visitors can spend a day or two looking at and learning about a wide range of plants, how to use them, how to grow them and how they fit into a home garden.

The fair is organised by the Larkman family, long term residents and nursery operators in the Yarra Valley and passionate growers of all sorts of plants.

“We have invited other passionate plant people from all sectors of the nursery industry.

Some are regular attendees at plant fairs with new and different varieties and others who rarely sell direct to the public,“ said Clive Larkman.

“You will see thousands of different plants and talk to the growers, collectors and breeders who have a great knowledge of their plant types and are a wonderful source of information.

“We will have talks from special growers each day all being managed by the passionate horticulturalist – Stephen Ryan. The talks will be on the main stage and will cover specialist plant types, garden tools and fertilisers.

Holistic fitness approach Healesville Fitness Centre has everything on offer when it comes to exercise and health.

Owner Ben Frazer has taken on a holistic approach to fitness, with not only fitness classes, personal training, pilates, yoga, martial arts, dance and boxing available but osteopathy, naturopathy and dietetics also onsite.

Mr Frazer said the reformer pilates and yoga studios are a big draw card, as well as the group fitness classes but believes it is the community feel that makes the gym so welcoming.

“From day one, our focus has been on creating a genuine, comfortable, empowering and inclusive fitness facility dedicated to ensuring that our members feel supported, healthy and strong,” he said.

“We’re not one of the big gyms where you’re just a number on a screen, we’re a locally owned and run gym who wants all members to feel at home when they walk in our doors.”

Launching in March 2020 meant that Mr Frazer and his team were in lockdown for eight months of their first year running.

But Mr Frazer said it gave them time to redevelop and renovate the space ready for their reopening.

“It’s been a wild ride, but we are so thrilled with where we are at and how everything is going,” he said.

Although this is Mr Frazer’s first solo venture after leaving the hospitality industry, he isn’t going it alone.

With the help of Tara, a fitness instructor and personal trainer, Mr Frazer said he is committed to making this business the best it can be.

“Tara and I have a great working relationship which has really made the launch of a new business, in the middle of a pandemic,

Gym memberships are $18 a week with no lock-in contracts, and a $50 sign-up fee.

There’s plenty to see and do at Mansfield Zoo, including meeting all of the animals or camping overnight for those who are game.

Mansfield Zoo is the place to go for animal lovers and a fun family day out, and the meerkats have arrived too.

The zoo features a large menagerie of native animals and animals from around the world including two rare white lions, two tawny lions, monkeys (capuchins, marmosets, rhesus and bonnet), deer, camels, bison, alligator, wombats and plenty more.

Take the opportunity to pat one of the friendly dingoes who walk around with a keeper while the lions are being fed.

Most animals can be fed by hand every day while guests wander the expansive ground.

A small spade is provided to feed the more gregarious animals, like the camels, who will run off with the spade if they can.

There are sambar, fallow deer and kangaroos roaming the grounds, along with guinea fowl and peacocks.

Bring a picnic lunch or use the free barbecues, just keep an eye on the deer as they often try to steal food.

For the more adventurous, there’s nothing like trying to sleep to the sound of the lion’s roar.

Healesville’s pride

Ranges represent Vic Metro

By Steve Ebbels This year has marked a significant moment in the history of the Healesville Cricket Club.

At the conclusion of last season a proposal was prepared which would see all clubs playing within the Yarra Valley Cricket Association (YVCA), agree to amalgamate into the Ringwood District Cricket Association (RDCA) to become part of their existing competition.

In July last year this proposal was voted upon by Yarra Valley clubs and subsequently passed by majority vote to become part of the newly structured RDCA. Whilst this amalgamation is a somewhat sad occasion given the long and proud history of the YVCA, it has provided a long sought after opportunity for clubs to be able play in a better competition with more choices available to find the most suitable level of cricket for both their senior and junior players.

Hopefully this proud history of Yarra Valley cricket will continue to always be remembered through the all the clubs that helped created it and now continue on to make new history in the RDCA. In the seniors 1st XI played in the Pascoe Shield (4th Tier of the RDCA Premier Grades competition), the 2nd XI played in the C Grade John Springett Shield competition and the 3rd XI played in the middle tier Yarra Valley Grade RA Finger Trophy.

By Jed Lanyon As the Under 19 Girls season draws to a close, the NAB League’s best talent were showcased in the NAB AFLW underage challenge games.

Matches took place with Vic Metro facing Vic Country in both Under 17s and Under 19s fixtures with Eastern Ranges players featuring prominently in both Vic Metro squads.

In the Under 17s, Vic Metro dominated from the opening bounce taking a 35 point win over Vic Country.

Mia Busch, Scarlett Potter, Alyssia Pisano and Laura Stone represented the Ranges with Busch and Pisano being named amongst the team’s best. Pisano was the only multiple goal scorer for the game bagging two goals.

In the Under 19s game it was Vic Country who took the win running away with a 24 point victory. Five Eastern Ranges players made the squad as Bridget Deed, Cadlha Schmidli, Jorja Livingstone, Georgia Campbell and Keeley Sherar all donned the big V.

Healesville 2nd XI RDCA C Grade Premiers. nal where they lost to Launching Place. 1st XI made it all the way to the Preliminary Final only to be beaten by Montrose whom they had only narrowly lost to on two occasions during the home and away season. The 2nd XI capped off a wonderful season when they went all the way to claim victory in the Grand Final over Warranwood and to be the proud winners of Healesville’ s first Premiership as part of the RDCA. In the juniors the U16 and U14 Junior sides played in the 16-1 and 14-2 competitions and whilst both teams struggled a bit playing at this highest and second highest level respectively,

both playing groups should be very proud of their efforts. The club fielded two Under 12 sides, one in U12-10’s and one in U12-5’s. The U12-10 side had a great season and made it to the semi final and the U12-5 side capped off an outstanding season which saw them go through the season undefeated to claim Healesville’s first junior premiership as part of the RDCA. The club also fielded two U10 sides which played in the non-competitive Mini Blast competition. Both these sides also had a great year and it is great to see so many young kids getting into cricket and bodes well for the club’s future.

Competitive win by Ranges puts NAB League on notice collecting a game high 34 disposals, while Corey Preston was a constant forward line threat booting 4.2.

Eastern Ranges will face the Oakleigh Chargers at Preston City Oval on Saturday 10 April.

The Under 19 Boys got off to a scintillating start kicking 6.8 in the first term to break the game open. Several missed opportunities prevented the Ranges from turning the game into a complete blowout.

Eastern took a 57 point lead into the main break, holding Calder to just 3.2 at their home ground while piling on 11.11.

Fatigue began to set in throughout the second half. The Cannons, who had played the Western Jets a week earlier, were better equipped to deal with the conditions kicking seven goals to the Ranges’ three.

For many, it was the first competitive game of footy since the 2019 NAB League Grand Final loss against Oakleigh.

By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics celebrated a fantastic end to the 2020-21 track and field season on Sunday. Warm, sunny skies made for a fun family carnival atmosphere at Morrison Reserve. Games on the infield, impromptu races and more bouncy castles than could be used kept everyone entertained. A steady supply of food and drink from the barbecue and canteen meant everyone left happy and full.
