Dave’s brave cure shave Popular Stanthorpe area identity Dave Reeves had sported long hair in the form of dreadlocks for the last 17 years - but he recently took the plunge and shaved off his prized and locally-familiar locks for the worthy cause of fundraising for leukaemia research as part of the ‘World’s Greatest Shave For A Cure’. Check out a story and photos from Dave’s act of generosity to help find a cure for this insidious disease - which raised a staggering $6500 in donations from a generous community. More on page 11
Carting put on a ‘hold’... For the first time in years, the region’s dams are at full urban supply capacity. A year of carting water has come to an end, water restrictions have been eased, new tourism possibilities have emerged, and the town is rejoicing. The torrential rain will see some significant changes take place across the region. Rain wrap up, pages 4-6
School’s 100 A great crowd of students and staff - both present and past - gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Amiens State School on the Granite Belt last weekend. It was a huge milestone for this great school, with our small but special country schools part of the heart and soul of our region’s rural communities. A big congrats to Amiens State School on achieving this significant date in its long and distinguished history of service to the education of future generations. Photos, page 13
Harvest crunch By Jess Baker With Australia’s international borders firmly closed, Granite Belt growers are still facing severe labour shortages and crop losses. State and Federal governments have instated a number of schemes intended to encourage Australians to relocate and take up work
on farms, but they have been largely unsuccessful to this point and are unlikely to pick up given Australia’s unemployment rate is virtually as low as it was pre-Covid. The Queensland Government has opted into the Australian Government’s recommencement of the Pacific Labour Scheme and Seasonal Worker Programme, which has
brought 1090 workers into the state to date. Granite Belt farmers have been bracing themselves for March 2021 – the peak of the summer season – since the Covid-19 pandemic first began, as experts predicted the Australian horticulture industry would be 26,000 workers short at this time. Strawberry and apple grower Nathan Bar-
onio says his family is on track to lose $750,000 in turnover this strawberry season due to a shortage of pickers. “We had to spray out and abandon a block of strawberries,” he says. “We just couldn’t keep up.” Full story page 3
