Pool could sink or swim

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council has announced a stay-of-execution for Doveton Pool in the Park, opting for public consultation before deciding the pool’s fate.

After a wave of public outrage, Casey administrators withdrew a motion on 16 March to replace the 52-year-old Olympic-sized pool with “public open space”.

In an alternate motion, they proposed a round of community engagement on the issue.

The motion noted the council’s commissioned experts’ findings that “an aquatic facility is not a priority” for the site and there was instead a need for more parkland in Doveton.

Administrators chair Noelene Duff told the meeting that “these decisions are difficult decisions for councils”.

She said the council had to look at the infrastructure demands across the “whole of City of Casey” - considering also the “newer parts” of Casey.

Upon visiting the pool, she found “a building in decay, a pool in decay”.

“It’s also an incredibly constrained site physically.”

To consider investing in a pool upgrade, the council had to be “quite convinced of the potential use leveraged off that particular investment”.

Administrator Cameron Boardman, a former competitive swimmer, noted “fondly” a “profoundly similar” situation when an ageing, unheated outdoor pool in Frankston North was on the chopping block.

He said “strong” community feedback led to the pool’s renovation and ongoing survival.

“We do want to hear from everybody.

“And we do want to assure that when we do make a decision that it will be in the longestterm best interests as possible of the community as a whole ... with all the information at hand.”

Doveton Pool in the Park’s waterslide and water-play area. 231126 Township Association (DETA) vigorously opposed the proposed pool closure. Local MPs Julian Hill, Luke Donnellan and Gabrielle Williams had also voiced concerns.

In a statement, DETA accused council officers of trying to “blindside” the community and push through the demolition “unchallenged”.

“At short notice the Doveton community has stood up and comprehensively sent a message to Council.

“To achieve more than 2000 petition signatures in a few days is truly an astonishing feat and testament to the importance of our pool.”

It noted the council hadn’t ruled out an option of replacing the pool.

“We are confident that if a genuine community consultation is undertaken it will reiterate that the ‘No Pool’ proposal is not something the community wants or will accept,” DETA stated.

ficult last week and work with Council to find a way forward for the site that incorporates a community pool in some form.”

DETA chair Sean Balfour said support from residents in nearby suburbs showed the outdoor pool was also valued across Casey.

The group had been “overwhelmed” by offers to donate, letterbox and petition for the campaign.

DETA vice-chair Joshua Oostwoud said many schools and community groups used the pool for swim trials and tournaments.

“A well-supported Doveton pool will avoid overcrowding at other pools in the outer southeastern region, benefit the local economy and boost our community’s sense of social cohesion.

“Many people in this region rely on public transport and need amenities and facilities that are close to home; this postcode must retain its community pool.”

According to a Casey Council report, the

Doveton outdoor pool was an “over provision of aquatic facilities and services” which lost $190,000 from July 2019-March 2020.

The report stated that Doveton-Eumemmerring’s 12,347 population was too small to justify a $40 million redevelopment including an indoor pool.

It instead recommended a $4 million option for free water-play equipment in a park and social gathering space.

This would address an undersupply of “district level” parkland in Doveton, including potentially dog off-leash areas, vegetation, barbecues and play space.

The report also rejected a proposal from Doveton College and Our Place to relocate Doveton Library to the site, with a new 25-metre ‘indoor-outdoor’ pool, fitness centre, kitchen, allied health offices and meeting rooms.

There were sufficient council community facilities in Doveton, as well as “accessible” aquatic alternatives such as Dandenong Oasis, Casey ARC and several learn-to-swim programs, the report stated.

An outdoor pool at Noble Park Aquatic Centre was within 7 kilometres away.

The report noted that Doveton’s pools were only open during days of or above 30 degrees Celsius in December-March.

It attracted 3717 casual visitors and 15,190 during swimming carnivals in the 2019-’20 season.

By 2026, a further $1.94 million would be required to maintain the pool, let alone upgrade it, the report stated.

The Doveton Pool in the Park - the only outdoor pool in Casey - is listed as a locally significant heritage site.

It was built in 1968 after a spate of drownings in Eumemmerring Creek. Residents reportedly raised funds and lobbied Shire of Berwick for the pool.

The council raised extra funds for the project with a charge on industrial ratepayers.

Battin fails in Liberal leadership bid the party now had a chance to put in place its position in the lead up to the 2022 state election. Mr Battin said he remained “very committed” to working to get Premier Daniel Andrews out of power.

“I want to be part of a team going forward.

I thought at the time my resume was a strong resume that could lead in the future - at the moment, that’s not the position of the party room. I respect that.

“This is an opportunity for the party room to get back together and reassess where we are.

“I’ll continue to fight to do what we need to do to get into government in 2022.

“We have a great opportunity to reset and get the message out there that we are the voice of the people.”

Mr Battin refused to rule out whether he would one day be Premier.

“I won’t rule anything out on that. I’m still young, and hopefully I’ve got a long time left in politics.

“I don’t think any person in the world could rule out wanting to be a leader and having ambition.”

Late on Tuesday 16 March, Mr Battin resigned from his positions as Opposition spokesman for roads, youth justice and community safety. He said this is “protocol“ after challenging a leader, but pledged to continue working on areas close to his heart.

“I’ll continue to work as tirelessly as I can particularly in youth justice and mental health. They’re important to me,“ the Gembrook MP said.

Pollies march for justice

By Danielle Kutchel Local politicians joined thousands of women marching through the Melbourne CBD for the March4Justice to support victims of sexual harrassment, violence and assault.

Held on Monday 15 March, the event was organised independently in response to numerous recent allegations of sexual assault especially in Federal Parliament - and was one of a number of similar protests held around the country.

In a picture shared on social media by Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, parliamentarians including Bass MP Jordan Crugnale, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards, Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan can be seen joining the crowd.

Ms Williams, who is Minister for Prevention of Family Violence and Minister for Women, said she had known the event would be “significant”.

“This is an issue that really resonated with people and I think that’s perhaps what the Prime Minister and Federal Government misread the room on,” she said.

“I don’t think they realised the reason why

“The turnout and activity online even among those who couldn’t attend, indicate that this is a watershed moment.”

She said the marchers carried with them “decades of frustration at the lack of change”.

“I’m hoping by having this discussion that’s out in the open about these issues, that we have them taken more seriously. I genuinely do believe this wont blow over.”

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said she marched because “all women deserve better”.

“It’s really infuriating that in 2021 we still have to march, to fight to have our voices, our stories, our experiences heard. Change needs to happen,” she said.

“We marched to bring to attention that gender bias that still exists, that gendered violence still exists and that we have a long way to go.

“Stories of racism, gender bias, stories of systemic challenges, stories of adversity, stories of hope, resilience and courage and support. This is real and won’t go away.”

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas also said the event was decades in the making.

“The March4Justice builds on decades of women’s struggle for acceptance, respect and equality. I believe that the national March4Justice was a defining step to ensure community change - so that all women can feel safe in their streets, workplaces and homes.”

“I proudly joined thousands of women across the country who stood up to have their voices heard and acknowledged. Women should feel safe no matter where they are but especially in their workplace. If the structures and processes that are currently in place don’t

facilitate fairness for women then they should change,” he said.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan joined his colleagues in saying “enough is enough”.

“It’s clear from the voices and lived experience of so many women in our community that a public discussion about sexual assault and power imbalance is long overdue. That’s why the march was so important,” he said.

“Our community is ready for this discussion and the message is clear - enough is enough.”

The March4Justice had four major demands: 1. A full police investigation of rape and sexual assault allegations, and misconduct by Members of Parliament and staff 2. An independent wide-reaching review commissioned by the High Court of gendered violence in Australia’s Parliaments including Federal Parliament 3. Australia wide strategies for deep cultural change in workplaces, and the political and criminal justice systems, focused on promoting equality, respect, fairness, integrity and a level playing field for all 4. Community rallies for grieving family

By Danielle Kutchel The community has rallied behind a grieving Cockatoo family, donating $2000 to help cover grocery bills as they lay their father and husband to rest.

Berwick business New York Barbers held a fundraiser on Saturday 13 March to assist the family of their employee Willow, who lost her father Jamin Swaneveld in a tragic motorcycle accident in Emerald on Saturday 6 March.

The business pledged to donate profits

from the day as well as money donated by patrons.

Mario Fallace, owner of New York Barbers, said he was “really pleased” to have been able to help Willow and her family.

“This will make a massive difference. I put it into Coles vouchers, so their groceries are taken care of for a few months now,” he explained.

“It will take a bit of the pressure away while they find their feet. Sadly, it doesn’t bring dad back, but it takes away that added pressure.”

He said the turnout was also pleasing, with patrons dropping in from as far away as Belgrave.

“We had complete strangers who weren’t even in for a haircut come and put money in.

The people I spoke to came for him (Jamin), they said he was a gentleman of the community.”

Mr Fallace said Willow had been “overwhelmed” by the gift.

“It’s the least we can do,” he said.

“We’re keeping an eye on her.”

Renew your pet’s registration

City of Casey pet owners are being reminded to update their furry friends’ registration with renewals due by 10 April this year.

The council has begun issuing reminders to animal owners regarding pet renewals.

The renewal process can be undertaken online via the council website, in person at a City of Casey customer service centre or over the phone.

Initial notices will be sent out this week, with a follow up SMS reminder sent towards the end of April and then final notices in May. Registration helps ensure you can be reunited with your pet if they are lost. It’s particularly important for people who have recently moved house or moved into the municipality, or if ownership of the animal has changed, to check their pet’s registration details.

Community grants open The 2021/22 City of Casey Community Grant program opens on Monday 22 March, offering assistance to local groups to deliver programs and events that support positive outcomes for the Casey community.

Grants of up to $5000 are available to notfor-profit community groups and organisations to hold community events, programs and activities that are innovative, promote a

sense of community and inclusion and help residents to engage in community life.

Last year, the Community Grants program helped approximately 100 groups to plan and deliver important programs, events, and services for the Casey community.

While Covid-19 meant that many had to postpone or re-schedule events, redirect funds to different types of activities or change deliv-

ery methods from face-to-face to digital, the grants program played an important role in keeping the Casey community engaged and connected during the pandemic.

Sister cities is scrapped

By Danielle Kutchel The City of Casey has moved to dump a number of its sister city arrangements, following a change in Federal Government legislation.

In a council meeting on Tuesday 16 March, the administrators of the City of Casey agreed to end foreign arrangements with Berwick Upon Tweed, the City of Springfield, Mianyang City, Dujiangyan City and CRRC/SRIC, a Chinese state-owned company.

The council’s motion follows the passing of the Federal Government’s Foreign Relations (State and Territory Arrangements) Act 2020, which allows the Minister for Foreign Affairs to scrutinise prevent foreign arrangements, or cancel existing ones, if the arrangement is considered to be inconsistent with Australia’s foreign relations.

Administrator Cameron Boardman, who moved the motion, said the motion was required under the act.

He said some of the sister city agreements that had been formed by previous councils were absurd, including some with Chinese state-owned government entities.

Several of Casey’s sister city programs have been dumped.

Mr Boardman said it appeared that many of the agreements had been used to justify travel expenditure, and said it was unclear what the

purpose of some of the agreements was.

“It goes without saying that the responsibility of organisations such as the City of Casey

has to be to its citizens and ratepayers first, and it’s very difficult to identify what benefits the citizens and ratepayers would’ve gotten from these arrangements,” he said, labelling them “utterly pointless”.

His fellow administrator Miguel Belmar said it was an appropriate move, and that foreign affairs should be left to other levels of government.

“The place of a local government municipality like Casey is to concern itself with the matters of its local community,” he said.

In a a review of Casey’s foreign arrangements, council officers identified six arrangements that may fail under the new Federal legislation. All bar one of those - with Ermera District of East Timor - were found to be inactive.

The sister city arrangement with the City of Springfield dated back to the council’s City of Berwick days, in 1985.

Arrangements with Mianyang City, Dujiangyan City and CRRC/SRIC were signed as part of the City of Casey’s China Engagement Strategy.

The strategy was axed in April 2020, after a council report found it “lacked clarity”.

Hardship relief on the way for Casey ratepayers

By Danielle Kutchel Struggling ratepayers in the City of Casey can breathe a sigh of relief, after the council announced it would continue its rates freeze out to the end of the financial year.

In a council meeting on Tuesday 16 March, the administrators of the City of Casey moved to continue to implement freezes on interest on outstanding rates, and to not pursue those

with outstanding rates, until 30 June 2021.

Administrator Cameron Boardman said at the meeting that the council had considered the move “extensively”, and that it was expected to ease hardship across the municipality.

Administrator Miguel Belmar said the move was part of a range of actions taken by the City of Casey during the Covid pandemic.

He said he hoped the municipality would

return to a more normal financial position in future.

Noelene Duff, chair of administrators, said the move was “appropriate” given the level of hardship still being faced by many residents in Casey.

It comes as the Federal Government prepares to end the JobKeeper scheme, which was put in place at the height of the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020 and has been hailed as

Wheel-y keen for school

By Danielle Kutchel Over 350,000 students across Australia are set to ride, scoot, skate or walk to school on Bicycle Network’s National Ride2School Day on Friday 19 March.

Among them will be students from Waverley Christian College in Narre Warren, building on a strong tradition of participating in the event.

Adam Dearness, a teacher at Waverley, said the school has been seeing increased interest in the event over the years.

He said the school targets healthy lifestyles amongst families, not just kids.

“It’s important to promote an active lifestyle for our whole school community, not just students,” he said.

“Ride2School gives us a platform to be able to speak into helping students to use active transport as a way to stay active.”

Often, he said, lack of safe riding routes is a barrier to students and their families choosing active modes of transport.

To counter this, the school talks to its students about safe routes to and from the gates, which helps put parents’ minds at ease.

Kids at Waverley Christian College eagerly participate in other physical activities through the curriculum and extra-curricular activities, Mr Dearness explained.

This includes things like volleyball and swimming, but also hiking and kayaking.

“We would like to see this program grow,” he said.

National Ride2School Day is Australia’s big-

gest bike riding party and the peak of the Ride2School program which works to help children get their 60 minutes of daily exercise by riding a bike to school.

Bicycle Network General Manager of Public Affairs Anthea Hargreaves said that National Ride2School Day is a great time to start going to school the healthy way.

“National Ride2School Day is a fun way for students and parents to experience the joy of riding a bike. There’s no better time to make riding to school part of your routine,” she said.

“Riding to school is free and fun and can also help students perform better in the classroom.

Studies have shown students arrive at school energised, alert and more ready to learn.”

Participation numbers in 2021 could receive a boost from the increased interest in bike riding, with a VicHealth survey finding more than 1 in 4 Victorian households with kids have been doing more walking or bike riding during coronavirus than they did in January and February this year.

Students won’t just be doing it for themselves, with many schools also fundraising for World Bicycle Relief to send specially designed Buffalo Bicycles to villages in Africa.

Buffalo Bicycles give children in developing countries a way of getting to school safely and quickly.

National Ride2School Day is part of Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program which has been running nationally since 2006.

Local news proves lucky

By Mikayla van Loon Winner of a national local news survey, Adam Sadiqzai, believes a local news source in the community is essential.

Having taken part in the joint research project between Deakin University, RMIT University and Country Press Australia, Mr Sadiqzai is one of ten lucky winners of an iPad. The survey looked at the importance of local news in regional and rural settings and asked for suggestions or observations from the community.

The survey concluded that printed news still has a strong demand and audiences would like to see more funding going to employing more journalists rather than to improving digital connectivity.

Mr Sadiqzai said he wanted to be involved in the survey because he has a real interest in local news and understands the important role a local newspaper plays in a community.

“Particularly at a time like COVID, our local newspapers were like any other business and were struggling, so I thought that the survey may help,” he said.

rations and have a dedicated interest in the local area.

“I think the role that the local media plays is just essential to building good communities and informing local communities about local news,” Mr Sadiqzai said.

“Most of the news I am sincerely interested in is my local news because that impacts myself, my family and my business, so I look forward to the weekly editions of both Berwick Star News and Pakenham Officer Star News because it informs me of the happenings in my community and I suppose impacts me more directly.”

Mr Sadiqzai said throughout COVID-19 he really appreciated the coverage and support of local businesses by local media in the Berwick and Pakenham area, which is something he says wouldn’t happen anywhere else.

“I like the fact that my local papers are totally vested in the local community and they do that well.”

Although he counts himself lucky, having never won anything in his life, Mr Sadiqzai didn’t enter the survey for the chance of winning but to return the support to his local news service.

Sleepy, high

By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Danielle Kutchel An ice-addled truck driver had hardly slept for days before fatally running down four police officers in a freeway emergency lane in 2020, the Supreme Court of Victoria has heard.

Mohinder Bajwa Singh, 48, of Cranbourne pleaded guilty to four counts of culpable driving causing the death of Victoria Police officers Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Joshua Prestney.

He also pleaded guilty to three counts of trafficking illicit drugs - ice, cannabis and 1,4-butanediol.

At up to 80 km/h, Singh’s prime mover drove into two police vehicles and Richard Pusey’s intercepted Porsche stopped by the Eastern Freeway, Kew about 5.36pm on 22 April 2020.

Numerous passers-by gave assistance but the four police officers died at the scene.

In his opening summary on 11 March, prosecutor Brendan Kissane QC told the court that Singh used and trafficked drugs, spoke often of being stalked by witches and taking little time to rest.

According to phone activity records, Singh had the opportunity to rest for just five hours in the 72 hours before the crash, Mr Kissane said.

Hours before the crash, an associate was told by Singh that “the witches are coming and we have to leave.”

“I had never seen anyone as drug f***ed in my life,” the associate later told police.

“He hadn’t slept for eight days”.

About 4.30am that morning, Singh told his son that “a witch was messing with his head, that a witch was following him, that a witch was pulling him towards her”.

Before Singh set out on the fateful journey, a work colleague told Singh’s supervisor at Connect Logistics’ depot in Abbotts Road, Dandenong South, that Singh shouldn’t be driving.

The supervisor spoke at length and prayed with Singh before Singh agreed to deliver a load to Thomastown.

He signed a ‘fitness to drive’ form, and left the depot just before 5pm - only stopping to supply ice to an associate in Abbotts Road.

During the next 38 minutes, the truck was observed several times “dipping and veering out of its lane” on Eastlink and Eastern Freeway, including repeated “dips” into the emergency lane.

“This dude’s going to f***ing kill someone,” an observer told his mother minutes before the crash.

An expert opinion found Singh’s prime mover was wholly in the emergency lane at impact, Mr Kissane said.

“There was no reactive braking until the time of impact” - despite the activation of the truck’s collision warning system two seconds earlier.

There was no evidence of contributory faults in the truck’s braking, steering, suspension or tyres.

According to a toxicologist, Singh was so impaired on ice he was incapable of properly

controlling a vehicle.

His level of sleep deprivation was equivalent to driving with a 0.3 blood-alcohol reading, another expert found.

Police found 83 grams of cannabis and 3 grams of meth in the truck, three cannabis plants being grown at his house and 23 diazepam tablets in Singh’s Camry and home.

Singh was taken to hospital and initially deemed unfit for interview. He later told police that he didn’t want to work because he was “sleepy and tired”.

“I can still see them in front of my truck and I tried to slam the brakes on ‘em and I couldn’t stop it, I couldn’t stop it.”

Over the days before, Singh sold and used drugs on several occasions, including a 12hour bender on ice and 1,4-butanediol with a female in a Dandenong Motel room.

He was observed by some of his drug associates as “off his head”. One of whom told him “he would kill someone if he didn’t get some sleep”.

At the second day of hearings on Friday 12 March, Singh apologised through his defence counsel Peter Morrissey SC for his actions.

Mr Morrissey said Singh had been recorded telling police to “tell the families ... I didn’t mean to hurt them. It was a big accident”.

Mr Morrissey told the court that there was no aggressive driving on Singh’s part, and that he was compelled to drive by his boss - despite recognising that he should not have been in control of a vehicle at the time due to his condition.

The defence counsel also stated that Singh had demonstrated that he was “instantly shattered by what he did”, with no attempts to flee the scene, and was willing to cooperate with the investigation and court process.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr Andrew Carroll told the court that Singh exhibited traits of psychoticism, disinhibition, and detachment, and that he had a history of “odd perceptual experiences and odd beliefs” dating back to his teenage years, predating his heavy drug use.

According to Dr Carroll’s testimony, Singh’s schizotypal personality trait meant he was more susceptible to developing psychosis while using ice, but He acknowledged it was difficult to say whether Singh’s psychosis on the fateful day was caused by his drug use.

Dr Carroll said Singh was prone to impulsive behaviours, a trait which may have been aggravated by ice use. Singh had been using ice for five years, and had increased his use in the months before the crash.

The court heard Singh’s weak self-esteem may have contributed to his decision to drive when pressured by his boss to do so. Singh had also expressed worry at losing his job, as he was still on probation.

Singh is still supported by his wife and two children, and has undertaken a number of courses while in prison awaiting sentencing, the court heard.

Mr Morrissey said Singh had “hopeful” prospects for rehabilitation.

The matter will return to court for sentencing on 14 April.

Bodybuilder’s big wins

By Danielle Kutchel Endeavour Hills resident James Lobriza is a living, breathing example of how hard work and dedication pays off.

The 22-year-old has recently picked up a swag of awards for his bodybuilding, after months of sacrifice and commitment to his dream.

On Saturday 27 February, Mr Lobriza took part in the IFBB Juniors Bodybuilding Competition’s Victoria State Qualifiers, where he won the under-23s and under-70s body building divisions.

Just a few days later on Sunday 7 March, at the ICN Rising Star and Rookie of the Year event, he received gold for the Rookie Men’s Bodybuilding U23, Rising Star Men’s Classic Physique and Rookie Men’s Classic Physique, plus a silver in Rookie Men’s Bodybuilding Open.

It’s a remarkable achievement for someone who only began bodybuilding training in March 2020.

Having been going to the gym since he was 17 but not been “100 percent committed”, Mr Lobriza decided to see what he was really capable of, and set himself a target to become a bodybuilder.

Working with coach Kevin Vo, Mr Lobriza said he began adhering to a strict training and diet plan, all of which impacted his lifestyle.

He had originally planned to compete in September, but the competition was cancelled during the pandemic.

“We went back to the drawing board, replanned and decided to go for the March competition,” he explained.

“A quote that stuck with me from my coach was ‘don’t stress over things you can’t control, just focus on the things you can’, like training, diet and nutrition.”

He’s now been adhering to a regimented diet and training program since March 2020.

That means sticking to clean foods, with a focus on chicken, rice, oats and potatoes.

“I’m a really big eater and a foodie. I enjoy going out with my girlfriend and enjoying Italian food, fast food and barbecues.

It’s a pretty big challenge to go this long without those!” he said.

His family and friends have been supportive throughout the journey and are “over the moon” to see him now accomplishing his goals.

“This lifestyle affects them as well because I can’t go out all the time and I can’t do normal family dinners because of my diet - but for them to be able to see what my goal was and get rewarded for it with the gold medal, that was a big achievement for me,” Mr Lobriza said.

While his awards are impressive, Mr Lobriza isn’t done yet and said he will continue to up his game.

“There’s room for improvement, but this sport is more of a journey, there is no final destination. Moving forward, I’m aiming to get better,” he said.

Meeting with volunteers and staff in Clyde.

CFA bosses pay a visit CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan, CFA’s new chief executive officer Natalie MacDonald and executive director people, culture and safety Janelle Leonard have embarked on a tour of CFA’s south east region.

The trio have been meeting with volunteers and staff across Victoria’s south east, as part of the fourth leg of a regional tour which has already included visits to the North West, West and South West over the past three months.

“Meeting CFA volunteers has been a top priority of mine since starting in my role on 30 November,” Mr Heffernan said.

Ms MacDonald also expressed her desire to meet and speak with volunteers across Victoria.

“It’s important we listen closely to our volunteers to understand how we can assist them in delivering the best possible service to their communities,” she said.

On Friday 12 March, Mr Heffernan met with volunteers at Clyde and Narre Warren alongside deputy chief officer south east region Trevor Owen.

“A highlight was being able to meet with many of the local firefighters who fought on

the front line in some of Victoria’s worst fireaffected townships last bushfire season,” Mr Heffernan said.

“It is grounding for me to be among our members and to listen to what matters most and share in their experiences.”

The tour began with a trip to Bemm River with a lunch to greet brigade members before travelling to Mallacoota to meet with local volunteers and visit fire-affected areas.

They both met with brigade members in Orbost, Bruthen, Westbury and Traralgon among other communities.

On Wednesday, Mr Heffernan and Ms MacDonald had dinner with Trafalgar and Westbury to discuss areas of improvement for the organisation in the relevant response areas.

There was also an opportunity for them both to engage with District 27 staff and meet with senior volunteer leaders.

In the coming months, Mr Heffernan will complete his final leg of the tour when he travels the North East region.

“I look forward to meeting with more of our members and hearing how we can make our CFA even stronger for the future,” he said.

Kinders get the tick A new initiative promises to provide families with more information on which kindergartens are offering Victorian Government approved and funded kinder programs.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas announced the Kinder Tick initiative at Regans Road Kindergarten in Hampton Park on Tuesday 9 March.

Kindergartens with the Kinder Tick will provide a program led by a qualified teacher with children benefiting from play based learning, and it’s funded and approved by the Victorian Government with compliance with government guidelines and the National Quality Framework.

“This program will mean that families will just have to look for the Kinder Tick to know that they’re sending their child to a government funded and approved program that’ll support their development,” Mr Maas said.

“Early childhood education is so important for a good start in life, and I’m proud to be a part of a government which recognises and invests so much in kindergarten services and programs.”

The Kinder Tick logo will be displayed at eli-

gible local early childhood education and care services, on the service’s building or grounds, and on their website or in their information materials.

The Kinder Tick is part of the State Government’s near $5 billion decade long plan to implement funded three-year-old kindergarten, which is expected to create up to 6000 new jobs in the early learning sector.

In 2022, children across the whole state will have access to at least five hours of funded three-year-old kindergarten.

Kindergarten programs for four-year-olds and eligible three-year-old children in Victorian Government funded services will be free in 2021 with funding set aside in the 2020/21 Victorian State Budget.

This is expected to save the average family around $2000 per child, and will benefit up to 100,000 families across the state.

Mr Maas said funding for three-year-old kinder would be a “welcome boost” for many families in the area.

There is one week left to provide feedback on uses for the Old Cheese Factory’s Homestead Cafe, which was closed in the wake of Covid.

Following the closure of the Homestead Cafe at the Old Cheese Factory in 2020, the City of Casey is calling for feedback on how best to use the space.

The Homestead Cafe was closed down after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in 2020, as the council decided it was not financially viable to continue running the venue.

The council is now consulting with the community to ensure the space reflects the community’s needs.

No options have been ruled out yet, so the

possibility of a replacement cafe remains open.

Following the engagement process, Casey Council will make a decision, considering what best suits the space while retaining its historical value.

Residents can have their say online via Casey Conversations, as well as in person, onsite at the Old Cheese Factory, when staff attend local community events to chat with users and allow them to see inside the space.

The consultation will close on Monday 22 March.

Village fees under review

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Retirement villages reform is on the State Government agenda, including the controversial issue of ‘deferred management fees’.

The State Government has released an Options Paper for public comment over the next six weeks.

One of the burning issues is residents being “caught unawares” by fees and the overall cost of living in a retirement village.

Residents have also been surprised by the size of deferred management fees (DMFs) charged by operators upon their exit or the sale of their units, the paper stated.

Residents say that it’s difficult to calculate DMFs upfront and to compare costs between villages.

The Options Paper raises the possibility of improving education on DMFs and villages providing “yearly contract check ups” on the status of a DMF. It also considers whether contracts are too complex, the upfront advertising of fees and charges, and clarifying repairs and maintenance obligations.

The paper follows 151 public submissions - including about 85 per cent from retirement village residents and related groups.

A joint submission by Housing for the Aged Action Group and Consumer Action Law Centre described DMFs as an “exploitative cash grab by unscrupulous operators preying on vulnerable elderly people”.

“Typically fixed at a percentage of an unknown future amount, accruing over an unspecifiable period, these are fees that no resident can predict, applied at a point where most residents’ capacity will be at its lowest.”

The groups outlined an 80-year-old case study who was “trapped” after fighting an operator for two years to repair her unit flooded due to nearby construction.

“She would like nothing more than to leave” but couldn’t afford to pay out the (DMFs) - 30 per cent of the sale price and a share of any capital gain.

HAAG and CALC stated more providers threatened residents with evictions for “relatively trivial” breaches, such as smoking inside a unit.

They called for a regulator to have powers to restrict or ban marketing of products where there was “significant risk of consumer harm”.

Disclosure of fees was insufficient protection because “they do not protect residents against fees that are unfair”, they submitted.

New Zealand operator Summerset is plan-

ning to open a village in Cranbourne North.

It submitted for mandatory legal advice for incoming residents and for simpler ‘plain English’ contracts - as is the case in New Zealand.

Summerset argued against disclosing all fees such as deferred management fees and departure charges in advertising material.

It would make advertising “unnecessarily complicated”. The fees were already clearly stated in a factsheet and disclosure statement.

Summerset submitted that disclosing prices with and without deferred management fees would be “unnecessarily complex”.

Property Council of Australia submitted

that the current factsheet and disclosure statements with details on deferred fees and other charges enabled prospective residents to make an “informed decision”.

Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne said feedback from residents and “other interested parties” was “critical in developing the reforms”.

“We’re ensuring residents of retirement villages and their families have the opportunity to share their important stories and experiences so that we can address key issues and concerns across the sector.”

Caravan scam warning Victorians are warned to be vigilant when planning a caravan holiday in the wake of coronavirus restrictions easing, following a surge in scams over the past five months.

Consumer Affairs Victoria has received 17 reports of caravan scams since October 2020, compared with two reports in 2019, and is reminding consumers to be cautious when making significant online purchases.

Scammers are advertising caravans online, then making excuses - or taking advantage of lockdown limitations - to convince buyers not to view the vehicle in person, encouraging them to make their purchase ‘sight unseen’.

Buyers are then being persuaded to deposit money into a bank account, with promises that they’ll be able to come and collect the caravan, or that the vehicle will be delivered to them.

After the buyer makes the deposit, the scammer stops communicating, and the product is never received.

Having successfully purchased many other products online, Andrea had no reason to doubt the experience.

It was only when the delivery of the caravan was expected to be on a public holiday that alarm bells were raised for Andrea.

She sent multiple emails for confirmation, both leading up to and following the expected delivery date. When she received no response from the proposed seller, she realised that she had been caught by a scam.

Andrea was one of many Victorians who lost a combined total of more than $1.5 million to online shopping scams in the past year.

When buying online, be wary of anyone who stops you from seeking further information about a product as this can often be a sign of a scammer.

Anyone who believes they may have been involved in an online shopping scam should report it to Consumer Affairs Victoria via consumer.vic.gov.au/reportascam

Rex name shame

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

“I want to get back into serving the community again. I want to run again and I want to get my name back on the honour board for the right reasons. At the moment it’s a dishonour board,” he said.

Star News understands Mr Flannery has put forward his request to be heard by the administrators at the next council meeting, slated for Tuesday 2 February.“It’s up to them now but a year later, this is still eating at me. I need closure and this is one way that I can get it,“ he said.

“I played no part in any downturn or sacking of the council and I feel it’s my duty to say that I don’t want to be a part of or in any way

Casey’s governance manager Rhys Matulis said: “Given the IBAC investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment on that matter. Council has received and will consider Mr Flannery’s request in due course.”

Poet’s language of love

By Mikayla Van Loon Words and vocabulary are usually a passion of most English teachers but for Liesel Kippen, 49, the word passion doesn’t even begin to describe her love for language.

Originally from South Africa, Ms Kippen taught English at secondary school for 11 years before moving to Australia in 2005, where she has now taught at the same primary school for 16 years.

When talking about language, the passion spills out of her in the most exuberant way, her voice rising as she describes how vocabulary can make something so compelling or beautiful or have more meaning.

“Vocabulary is so powerful and words are so powerful and how we use them can obviously relay our tone,” she said.

“I love vocabulary, I love language. I’m passionate about language.”

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Ms Kippen started writing poetry and exploring the different writing styles and techniques of poems.

“I used to do a few poems in my writers workshops here in Australia in the last five years but not putting it into a poetry book, that thought didn’t cross my mind until last year,” Ms Kippen said.

“I used to do a lot of writing just for myself but I think last year when I wrote my COVID poem, one of my friends told me to publish and I thought ‘ok I’ll publish that’.”

After getting in contact with Balboa Press and London Cambridge, Ms Kippen has since published two poetry books, has an audio book on the way, as well as another book of poems.

Her most recent book ‘Cherry Blossoms’ explores the theme of hope and compassion through people’s connection to nature.

“I just love nature and the powerful impact nature has and I was able to use all that descriptive language and figures of speech in my writing to actually bring out nature and it’s phenomenal aspects,” Ms Kippen said.

“The fact that nature can inspire in spite of everything and especially with COVID the way it was, I found an enjoyment in writing and finding out that nature can impact beautifully and powerfully on a person regardless of the situation we find ourselves in.”

As someone who grew up by the beach in South Africa and spent every spare minute

swimming, canoeing and taking bush walks, Ms Kippen has always had a tie to nature’s wonders.

Now living in Berwick, the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens are right on her doorstep, something Ms Kippen says she is so lucky to have.

“I think I’m inspired by the fact that I can take a walk or a drive just up the road and be a part of the Botanical Gardens and see all the things that are there,” she said.

“When I see all the flowers, the different types, I take photos of it because then I can write about it, describe it, it’s appearance and how it looks.”

Ms Kippen believes throughout the pandemic people lost their connection to nature by being inside all the time but by being in lockdown, once able to enjoy nature people took better notice of everything it has to offer.

“It has so much beauty to give to life, to add to life and value and quality to life which we just took for granted and that just made me so much more aware that we’ve got all of these fantastic things and while they are free and we can’t take them for granted, to appreciate it but to also know that we are blessed as a result of it,” Ms Kippen said.

When it comes to poetry, Ms Kippen is influenced by some of the most descriptive writers in history, including Jane Austen.

“When I read some of her works, I love how they describe different settings, different people, just their character and the use of powerful vocabulary or vivacious vocabulary I like to call it, to bring out or enhance either a person or a setting or an environment.”

Something else that inspires her writing is visuals.

“Pictures play an important role, it’s almost like it opens a whole new dimension for me to write, it encourages the imagination to write more and to be inspired to a great extent,” Ms Kippen said.

By describing what she sees in a photograph or a picture, Ms Kippen can expand her readers imagination through words.

“They see to a degree what I’m seeing and what I’m thinking of and what I’m exploring in my poems.”

Ms Kippen is now exploring the writing process of a novel, which she plans to continue writing after the release of her next poetry book ‘Whispers in Time.’

Calls to fix dreadful M1

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two drivers have died in nine months on what Star readers have described as a “dreadful” and “dangerous” section of Monash Freeway.

A 28-year-old Cranbourne East man was killed after a crash with a truck in the outbound lanes between Heatherton Road and South Gippsland Freeway about 4pm on Tuesday 9 March.

Moments earlier, his car had been involved in a minor crash with another vehicle.

The man died at the scene.

In June, a man died when his car and two trucks crashed in the same section of freeway.

In both cases, Star readers criticized the roadway.

“My heart goes out to all involved. This is a dreadful section of road and it is unsurprising that such a tragedy has occurred,” a reader wrote after the most recent fatality.

“That section of freeway is dangerous.

Something ought to be done before it happens again,” another said.

“I hate that location of the freeway. Very dangerous for everyone,” was another comment.

In June, other readers commented on the difficulty in merging onto the outbound lanes from Heatherton Road.

“You have to negotiate getting across two lanes of traffic to merge onto the freeway while others are cutting across you to get to the (South Gippsland Freeway) exit.

“There is a very short amount of road for everyone to find their lane. It needs a solution ASAP.”

An extra lane in both directions had been added in this section as part of Stage 1 of the Monash Freeway Upgrade.

Upon returning to New Zealand, and a few more examinations he registered with the New Zealand Dental Council and The General Dental Council (UK). After a few years in private general dental practice in New Zealand, Nishan attended the University of Adelaide to complete his Doctoral in Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) in 2005. His area of research involved the investigation of dental, skeletal and facial complex changes with extraction orthodontic therapy, and assessment of the resultant aesthetic changes of the face .

Women mark their day

By Danielle Kutchel From total strangers to firm friends: that was the transformational impact of Brentwood Park WASEMA Friendship Cafe’s International Women’s Day event.

On Thursday 11 March, women from around the Casey area gathered at Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House for a morning tea and a celebration of women from all backgrounds.

Some brought friends, while others braved the event solo - but they didn’t stay that way for long.

Seated at communal tables, the ladies began to open up conversations with the strangers beside them, until the room filled with laughter and the sorts of casual chats you hear amongst close friends.

A round of dancing began, with guests spinning and rolling to the Bee Gees.

Soon, most of those in the room were adorned with henna tattoos, while a raffle and a guess-the-number game drew out some friendly competition.

The feedback at the end of the morning was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees saying they were glad they’d been able to meet new people and promising to attend more of the Friendship Cafe’s Thursday morning meetups.

In fact, the event was the first in-person meet for the Brentwood Park WASEMA Friendship Cafe, which commenced just as Covid hit and has been running catch-ups on Zoom for the past year.

Facilitator of the Friendship Cafe, Zoh Hasib, said she was “very happy” with the level of turnout for the “inauguration and celebration”, and stressed the importance of the day.

“I think taking one day out specifically for women means everything you’ve done or sacrificed or committed to, it’s a day to celebrate that.

“Throughout my life I’ve met so many amazing women who made so many sacrifices, and I hope I can be as successful as they are.”

She encouraged women in the area to continue visiting the cafe on Thursdays.

“I want Thursdays for two hours for ladies to forget whatever is going on outside and come in here and just be you,” Ms Hasib said.

Teeing off in his memory By sports editor Russell Bennett From all walks of life across the south eastern community, they came together at the Berwick Montuna golf course on Friday to remember their great mate - Ash De La Rue. His was a life tragically cut short by cancer, leaving behind a loving family - including a young son.

But his was a life that will never be forgotten.

Two of De La Rue’s great mates, Justin Stanton and Jeff Bernard, organised a golf day on Friday they lovingly named ‘Flynn’s Sporting Journey’ as it was held to raise funds for young four-year-old Flynn as he progresses in his chosen endeavours, be they academic or sporting.

“In April 2018 Ash had what was commonly referred to as a man-flu and he went to the doctor, but he just couldn’t shake it,” Stanton said of the beloved former Berwick footballer and Upper Beaconsfield cricketer.

“A few days later the doctor said they’d organise a blood test because they wanted to nip it in the bud.

“As a result, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML).

“All of 2019 he spent in and out of Monash Clayton receiving treatment, and with a very small percentage chance of getting into remission he entered remission in November of 2019, but it unfortunately returned in February 2020.

“Unfortunately we lost him on the 6th of June in 2020, and that was obviously smack bang in the middle of Covid so we had restrictions with regards to his funeral service and wake.”

So, a number of De La Rue’s friends and those connected to him through his community and business involvements opted to come together to remember him, enjoy a day on the course, and raise some money to go towards Flynn’s future pursuits.

“Jeff and I approached Berwick Montuna Golf Club and they basically provided us with the venue and we put the wheels in motion to plan a golf event for late last year, but unfortunately Covid didn’t allow it so we postponed it until 12 March this year,” Stanton explained.

“Ash was just one of these guys who was actively involved in a number of areas throughout the community, as well as being a construction manager at Mirvac.

Ash De La Rue’s brother-in-law Simon, his step-mother Anne, winners of the inaugural golf day Andrew Williams and Kris Fletcher, and Ash’s sister Sheridan and father, Dick.

Picture: SUPPLIED “He touched a lot of people in different ways, either by providing them with employment, or just being involved socially. Jeff and I decided that if we put a golf day together, we’d try and raise some money to put into a trust account for Flynn that Ash’s sister Sheridan could manage.

“It was just one of those things where the local guys wanted to do something to acknowledge the passing of Flynn’s dad Ashley and have this as an annual event.”

About 140 people attended the golf day on Friday, with great mates and local footy figures Kris Fletcher and Andrew Williams emerging victorious.

“Each year we’ll be running this tournament in Ash’s memory,” Stanton said.

“We initially thought it’d just be a small group of people who put their hands up, but before you know it we sold out the whole course and had people and sponsors come from everywhere. It was fantastic, and really touching. The family was present on Friday and they’ve been overwhelmed with the participation from the local community.”

Stanton said De La Rue’s passing was a tragedy amongst a particularly tough 12 months for the whole community.

“Local people really wanted to jump on board, and I guess it was partly their opportunity to come out of hibernation from the Covid pandemic - It was going to be a real celebration of Ash’s life,” he said.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t do it late last

year, but we made up for it on Friday.

“A lot of the people there were squeezed out of being at the funeral because the numbers had to be capped. It was the first time many of us were able to see each other since his passing.”

Swans coach Brian Keogh couldn’t have higher praise for his emerging young star, describing the stylish left-hander as a ‘rare’ talent he hasn’t seen often in his cricketing life.

Against an incredibly strong Ringwood bowling outfit, featuring Victorian quick Zak Evans, Chandrasinghe looked utterly unfazed.

He took his time getting going as Lachie Sperling raced out of the blocks at the other end, and while the leftie stayed patient there was also an inevitably that it would eventu-

ally turn for him.

The real shift in his game came when keeper bat Dev Pollock (82) arrived at the crease, and the pair soaked up pressure before realising the shackles with a cracking 147-run stand.

Pollock playing the aggressor sent some stunning shots to the boundary, while Chandrasinghe continued to run hard and build his innings.

When Pollock fell, Chris Benedek crunched a brutal 19-ball 45, slapping four sixes in the process, while Chandrasinghe remained calm to bat through the innings and register an unbeaten 103 as the Swans racked up 3/271.

His sequence to get to the century is an indication of his continual improvement, scooping one over short fine leg’s head for a boundary before a crisp drive for two down the ground brought about the three figure.

It was, in Keogh’s mind, the complete batting performance from his young star, and a sign of things to come.

“The three things that jump out is that we’re happy, we’re proud and we’re excited for him,” he said.

“This year he’s learned some real tricks to his batting, like hitting balls over the top where it previously wasn’t part of his game.

“I think the next evolution is to score a bit quicker, and that’s continuing to learn where is single is and where his boundary is.

“He’s almost a complete player now. He’s

fit, he’s strong, and he’ll only get stronger.”

Keogh said the club was quietly confident that he wasn’t far from securing a state contract with Victoria.

“We’re hopeful to be honest, that there is a contract for him next season,” he said.

Keogh also heaped praise on vice-captain Devin Pollock, who was all class in his knock of 82.

“As good as Ashley was, Dev’s knock set the cornerstone to make that 270,” he said.

“He’s been really frustrated about making starts, and that’s been the challenge for the batting group this season aside from Ashley.

“Why people love playing cricket with Dev, he’s just such a competitor and so determined, and once he got that start, he was as determined as I’ve seen him.

“It was a hell of an innings.

“We think he has capabilities to go to the next level - he’s made a lot of starts, and if he went on, he could 600, 700 runs, so if he converts more then who knows.

“If they bring back the state second XI, we hope his name is up for consideration.”

Despite the second-innings washout resulting in a draw, Keogh said that there was so much promise to take out of the clash for the rest of the year and into next season.

“We were disappointed, but we take it as a small win,” he said.

Rain can’t dampen finals

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND TURF 2 REVIEW - SEMI-FINALS With expected rain wreaking havoc upon Melbourne on Saturday and forcing games to be dragged into Sunday, it was certainly a weekend full of plenty of drama and anticipation.

But two crucial things are known as the quest for the DDCA Turf 1 premiership heats up - Hallam Kalora Park are through to the grand final as they chase Turf 1 glory for the first time since 2001/02, and Springvale South advance to the preliminary final with the Bloods once again right up in the thick of it.

At Frawley Road, the semi-final clash between the Hawks and reigning premiers Berwick lived up to its billing.

It was a stunning start for the Bears on Saturday after sending the minor premiers into bat, with star opener Leigh Booth falling early to quick Brendan Rose (2/19), before the ex-Casey-South Melbourne bowler prized the edge of Sachith Jayasingha four balls later.

Ben Hillard - who hasn’t opened the batting all season - got the chance at the top, and did what he did best, soaking up the pressure and bringing the game back to level-pegging in a vital 56-run stand with Matthew Cox (23).

While Cox was stumped off the bowling of Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/49), skipper Jordan Hammond and Hillard dug in with the rain eventually making its way to the south-east, forcing an early finish at 3/82 - Hillard unbeaten on 39.

The next day, the Hawks upped the ante, with Hillard’s fine 64 coming to an end after being run out, with skipper Hammond showcasing his power with a run-a-ball 47 to lift the home side to an impressive 6/171 from its 45 overs.

If there was ever a player that the Bears couldn’t afford to lose early it was the dangerous Jordan Cleland, with seamer Will Whyte (3/33) removing the right-hander first ball.

Nathan Pilon (35) battled hard at the top, while the middle-order struggled to get any ascendancy, falling to 6/66 after a stunning burst from Leigh Booth (3/3) completely broke the game open.

Some late fight from James Wilcock (10), Brendan Rose (17) and Jarrod Goodes (21) saw the Bears lift itself to 128 in the end.

But with the Hawks now enjoying the week and prepare for a grand final, the champion Bears will return to Arch Brown Reserve for a prelim on Saturday as they seek to defend its 2019/10 title.

It was a tense showdown between Springvale South and Buckley Ridges at Alex Nelson Reserve in a cut-throat semi-final, with the Bloods ultimately advancing to the preliminary final against Berwick.

Despite a blistering start from skipper Nathan King (27), and a typically classy hand from Ryan Quirk (45), seamer Hussain Ali filled the void left by Benny Howell by snaring 4/13 and leaving the Bloods vulnerable.

But if day two was going to be smooth-sailing, it was anything but.

Due to the rain and complicating factors surrounding wet patches, the game was delayed until 4pm, with the Bloods then permitted to bat out its remaining 18 overs.

Off the back of Dylan Quirk (24), Akshat Buch (33) and Tim Ford (27 not out), the Bloods lifted itself to 7/190 from its 45 overs, putting the home team in a dominant position.

With time lost, it made the task for Buckley an incredibly difficult, yet not impossible one chase down 191 in 21 overs, or its season over.

That was until left-arm tweaker Akshat Buch took control.

The spinner ensured the Bucks could never really mount a charge, opening the bowling and removing the champ Daniel Watson early.

With the visitors going with the attitude of just ‘go for it’, Buch used all of his skill to knock over the Bucks, snaring 5/26 from 7.4 overs his best figures of the season.

The Bucks ultimately were rolled for just 68 with the home side winning by a whopping 122 runs.

In Turf 2, Narre Warren entered the weekend’s semi-final clash hot favourites to advance through to the grand final.

But the Magpies were always going to be issued a stern challenge by a gritty Parkmore Pirates unit that loves the underdog tag.

While the Maggies eventually overcame the challenge and booked itself a ticket to the big dance, the Pirates never gave in, with 23 runs separating the two clubs in the end - a result a lot closer than many would have anticipated.

Sent into bat by the Pirates, seamer Brad Vantwest (2/16) set the tone early, snaring dangerous duo Zach Allen and Ben Swift, who have been destructive all year for the Magpies.

Soaking up the pressure, John Mentiplay (36) held the top and middle orders together with a patient knock but the Pirates kept fighting to leave the Magpies 7/95 and with a stunning upset potentially on the cards.

The home side managed to survive until the rain took hold, finishing on 7/125, and despite not lighting it up with bat in hand as has been the custom this season, were in the box seat to advance through to the grand final.

An absolutely vital 37 not out from Bevan Radhakrishnan, combining in a 63-run stand with Kasun Balasuriya (23) saw the Magpies lift itself to 8/164 from its 45 overs.

But due to time lost after a delayed Sunday start, the Pirates were not given its full 45 over quota, but it didn’t let them hamper its quest

A fighting 45 from Mohomad Safras was the catalyst for a gallant chase, but the Pirates were bowled out in 26 overs, falling short on 141.

Down at Casey Fields, Dandenong West dug deep to overcome the Sweeney-inspired Cranbourne side to also advance to the grand final.

Runs are a premium in crunch-finals, and the Westers - after being sent in - were well led by Matt Collett (45), Dylan Diacono (45 not out) and skipper Anthony Brannan (30) who helped get the visitors to 4/133 before the storm set in.

Returning the next day, the Westers crunched a further 29 runs to post 8/162 from its 45 overs.

The Eagles were undone by a horror start to the chase, with reliable opener Dean McDonell and Dilusha Jayaratne sent packing early, but the Sweeney brother - Mick and Pete - as they often have this season, dug in.

Putting together 74 crucial runs, the Westers eventually prized out Mick for 42, and despite the class of Pete, who batted beautifully to post 59, the visitors took regular wickets as they closed in on victory.

In a golden performance from veteran Pete Atkinson (5/30), the Eagles fell short, rolled for 144 and bowled out in the final over. Charles Gartside Medal winner Gurpreet Singh was also important, snaring 2/31.

Perfect start to the new Big V season for Cavaliers

By Nick Creely The Casey Cavaliers have kicked off their 2021 Big V Championship Men’s season in style, defeating Hume in a thrilling 89-88 contest on Saturday night.

The Cavs were in utter control in front of its home crowd in the first half, racing out of the blocks in the first quarter with a 25-18 lead courtesy of some strong defensive efforts and slick shooting.

While the Broncos bit back, and started to find its groove across the court, the Cavs took in a 51-42 lead at the half-time break, with

Matt Donlan in particular showcasing his class with a strong all-rounded display.

But the visitors were not going to lie down and let the game completely fizzle away, setting the tone for the third term with a more efficient shooting display.

While the home side still managed to maintain its lead, the Broncos had reduced the deficit at the end of the third quarter to just three, 71-68, and with the ball really in anyone’s court.

In a thrilling final term, the Cavs soaked up plenty of pressure but the Broncos just

kept on coming before steadying the ship and holding on to the end with an 89-88 win.

Matt Donlan was a standout for the Cavs, registering 26 points, seven rebounds and two assists, Ben Gaspar also did his part with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Ben Waterhouse was slick with 15 points and three rebounds.

The Cavs also enjoyed a strong night at the office in the Championship Women’s division, starting hot against the Broncos before running away with a 77-45 demolition.

The home team raced out of the blocks

with a 23-11 first term, and eventually lead 42-21 at the half-time break.

The Broncos showed more fight in the second half, but were ultimately handed a heavy defeat to start the season.

For the Cavs, Sheereesha Richards was simply everywhere, racking up 35 points and 14 rebounds to be an utterly dominant force, while Taylor Lee’s all-round game was impressive, registering 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Elsewhere, Casey defeated Hume 91-86 in the Youth League 1 men’s season-opener.

Six teams reach the finals CRANBOURNE BOWLS Six Cranbourne teams have qualified for finals in a successful year for the club.

The top side defeated Mulgrave Country Club and now has the honour of hosting a home semi-final game against Coatesville on Saturday.

The Cranbourne number three and five sides also get to play finals on the weekend after both winning games in the final round.

Midweek bowlers still have a game to play this week but three sides have already qualified to play in finals.

With finals to be played over the next week the club had a celebration dinner on Saturday after the game with club president Tony Collins in great form as MC and everyone who attended had a most enjoyable evening.

Q and A with head coach Lyn Quigg: Q: Last year in Division 2, Cranbourne finished second and were well beaten in the finals.

What is different this year?

LQ: “The team this year has bonded well and is stronger than last year. They are playing with more consistency and have achieved a very high standard of bowls which is giving us the results.”

Q: To promote this team up to Division 1 Cranbourne will have to win both finals on the weekend and then win the following Saturday in a playoff to be promoted. Is Cranbourne good enough?

LQ: “Yes we are good enough, opposition teams have commented all year just how strong Cranbourne is. This reflects in some of the large winning margins against most teams we played.”

Q: With six teams playing in finals from Cranbourne this year you must be very pleased with the effort.

LQ: “Yes, it is a great effort and the club has a real good vibe at the moment, but the hard work is still ahead of us. We need to go on now and win finals.”

Weekend Pennant Round 14 Results Side 1, Division 2, Section 9 In wet conditions Cranbourne took the points against Mulgrave Country Club with an outstanding game played by skip Barry Thomas, Peter Elgar, Graeme Wood and Lynne Wood winning by 18 shots. Next week Cranbourne plays Coatesville on Saturday in the Semi-Final at home. The winner plays off in the grand final on Sunday.

Cranbourne 87 (16 points) defeated Mulgrave CC 36 (2 points).

Side 3, Division 4, Section 6 Also playing in the wet at Mulgrave, Cranbourne went on to win by seven shots with a great effort from skip George Ljepojevic, Bill Sheriff, Rob Scott and Helen Witherden who won by eight shots.

This team qualifies for finals on the weekend.

Cranbourne 66 (16 points) defeated Mulgrave CC 59 (2 points).

Side 5 12-a-side A strong win by Cranbourne against Narre Warren. The best rink was that of skip Peter West, Sofio Raiti, Olive Stanley and Norm Coley who won by 14 shots. This side plays finals next weekend.

Cranbourne 57 (16 points) defeated Narre Warren 24 (0 point).

Lynne Wood had a great game at Mulgrave.

Graeme Wood has been voted as the club’s most valuable player.

Midweek bowls results for Round 13 were Side 1, Division 2, Section 6 A return to great form from Cranbourne with a strong win against Hampton Park by 38 shots.

Best rink was skip Gavin Wright, Lynne Wood, Graeme Wood and Maree Taylor winning by 21 shots.

A win this week will give Cranbourne a home final the following week.

Cranbourne 78 (15 points) defeated Hampton Park 40 (1 point) Side 2, Division 2, Section 9 Another heartbreaking close loss this time by

only three shots against Parkdale now puts them in last place on the ladder with only one game to go.

In short next week is like playing in a grand final with Cranbourne playing away at Moorabbin and must win to have any chance of staying in Division two next year.

Skip Chris Griffiths and his crew of Harry Van Soest, Barry Graham and Sandra Mueller won by 10 shots.

Cranbourne 51 (2 points) lost to Parkdale 54 (14 points).

Side 3, Division 4, Section 6 A great win against Cardinia Waters by 27 shots

Side 4, Division 4, Section 8 Cranbourne found the green at Edithvale a little tricky and went down by 29 shots which is a day to forget. This team will finish on top of the ladder and will host a home final next week.

Cranbourne 47 (2 points) lost to Edithvale 76 (14 points).

There were cracking contests aplenty in Casey Softball The last round of the Casey Softball home and away season started in very warm and muggy conditions. The mixed under-16s first game featured the Cobras Maroon and Berwick Mohawks. The Cobras started very strong with nine runs in the first innings. The Mohawks did manage to keep them at bay after the first innings, but the damage was already done. The Cobras won 12-4. The best for the Cobras was Rosalie Guy, and for the Mohawks Skye Hawker.

The clash between Doveton and Cobras Grey was a cracker of a game. Both teams had a good start with Doveton up 3-2 after two innings. Both teams scored one run in the third, and two runs each in the fourth.

Doveton managed to hold on to their early one-run lead, to win 6-5. Best for Doveton was Keira Hoad, and Cobras Hunter Lewis.

The first social women’s game was first versus third - Berwick Geronimo and Narre Warren Penguins. The game started evenly, but in the second innings Geronimo got their batting game going with seven runs, with Pam Barton and Jo Haines both batting well. The Penguins never gave up, and in the third innings Ros Cooke hit a nice single to left field, a comedy of errors ensued, and Ros’ speed around the bases got her home for a home run on errors. The final score was 12-3 to Geronimo. The best for Geronimo was Jo Haines and for Penguins Jessica George.

Next was Cobras and the Cranbourne Comets. In the first innings Comets scored three to the Cobras’ two. After that, the Comets’ defence held strong keeping Cobras scoreless, while scoring another seven runs, to win 10-2. The best for Comets Amanda ‘Moo’ Clunes and for Cobras Kylie Whitecunas. Berwick Chickasaw came up against Doveton Renegades, and by this time the showers had started. It was a high-scoring game that saw lots of great hits from both teams. Barb Wells from Chickasaw had a great double play, fielding the ball at second and tagging the runner going past, then throwing the ball to first for the second out.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature won the last round, with heavy rain making the diamonds unplayable and washing out the Open Men’s and Women’s games.
