A grape lesson For the last three years a miniature vineyard has been growing, tucked at the back of Upper Yarra Secondary College, and now the time has finally come to harvest the grapes.

It was a significant day for the school as its viticultural students took to the outdoors to pick the pinot noir grapes, while receiving lessons in harvesting from Yarrawood Estate winery on Wednesday 3 March.

It’s been a long time coming for the students

now involved in the new Certificate II in Wine Industry Operations elective, as they started their high school journey around the same time Yarrawood Estate planted the root stock in a back paddock on the school’s grounds.

“We’re the only public school in Victoria

with a vineyard,” said Year 10 student Laine.

“It’s kind of like our hidden gem here.

“The Yarra Valley wine industry is obviously one of the biggest in Victoria, so it’s kind of good to be contributing to that.”

School’s ‘hidden gem’ makes for a lesson ripe to pick From page 1 Classmate Miesha said she never envisioned doing anything like this at school.

“I like being outside picking grapes with my friends, we’re having a good time whilst still learning something. It’s a good chance for us to do this as a career when we’re older,” she said.

“I’ve enjoyed learning something that we thought we’d never learn. Even just last year I wouldn’t have thought we’d be doing this, but now we’re out learning something that a lot of

other kids don’t get to do.

“It’s definitely better than being stuck in maths or English.”

The school has partnered with Box Hill Institute to deliver the program.

Class teacher Marcus Cook said it was a “real life experience” for the students to see the winemaking process after learning the theory behind vineyard management.

“It’s a pretty exciting opportunity. It’s good that the students are getting a hands on pro-

cess. They’re going to pick it, see it pressed, see it go to the bottle. They’re going to be involved in the marketing of it and design a label.

“It means the students might be able to stay local and won’t have to move out of the Valley to find meaningful employment, which I think is pretty important.”

Mr Cook said that while the school is not allowed to sell the wine, they can accept donations for it.

Yarrawood Estate managing director Tim Schwaiger said it had been “frustrating” that

relevant facilities and courses hadn’t been available in the Yarra Valley.

“In the past we’ve paid for students and our employees in the Yarra Valley to go up to Dookie, which is a stretch,” he said. “To have a local facility and get the kids interested in and have the opportunity to get involved in the wine industry at a younger age would be fantastic.”

The students will soon take part in the pressing process at Yarrawood Estate, while Mr Schwaiger anticipates the wine to be available from early-to-mid 2022.

Rough master plan

By Jed Lanyon Some Upper Yarra dog owners were barking mad about Yarra Ranges Council’s draft plan for Wesburn Park, which initially proposed the dog off-leash area to be relocated out of the park.

Council is in the process of planning for major upgrades to the Wesburn Park area for the many sporting and community groups located there and to accommodate the nearby Warburton Mountain Bike Destination Project, but some dog owners feared it meant losing the only grassy space available to unleash their canine friends.

Council’s draft master plan suggested the relocation of the dog off-lead space to Cavanagh Road beside the Warburton Trail, but after consultation with nearby dog owners, the alternative plan will be for the space to potentially remain at Wesburn Park but at a reduced size to make way for parking spaces.

Council’s director of environment and infrastructure, Mark Varmalis said the additional parking spaces are required to accommodate future growth in visitors for recreation and events at the facilities.

“Our current plan for the off-lead area at Wesburn Park is to keep the park in its current place,” Mr Varmarlis said. “This has been influenced by feedback we’ve received very recently from dog walkers, who wanted to see the offlead area stay.

“Following this feedback we’ve updated our plans to make this happen. We’ll be re-aligning the park to formalise existing car parking spac-

es and designing the off-lead area to create a safer, more entertaining space for all dog walkers visiting the park.

“Since updating the plans for the dog offlead area, we’ve been out on site to talk to community members to make sure the changed plans get the balance right, and to gather more feedback. Council will also be investigating more locations for additional dog play and activities within the Upper Yarra and the wider community.”

The revised plans could see the dog park reduced from 7000 metres squared to 4200 metres squared.

Long-time Warburton resident Anne told Star Mail she brings her four dogs to Wesburn Park everyday.

“I come here to walk my dogs as a lot of other people do because there’s no other place ... You can’t walk anywhere but here because you’ll get run over by the push bikes in Warburton.”

Anne expressed her displeasure at the proposed Cavanagh Road site and said the next closest location for dog owners would be to take their pets to Lilydale or Healesville.

Anne said she “didn’t mind” council’s plan to reduce the park in comparison to moving it to Cavanagh Road, a location she described as ‘swampland’. While other locals voiced their displeasure at seeing a grassy green area turned into a gravel car park.

Two other residents, who wished to remain anonymous, believed the smaller space wouldn’t be enough.

“From the dog owners point of view, the

small patch of land here now isn’t enough for the number of dogs that come down here,” said the Warburton resident of about 20 years.

He said he uses the area twice daily.

“It’s a big community of dog owners and especially during this last year with Covid and seeing mental health issues, this is where everybody has come and they’ve managed to chat about the issues they’re having.”

“It’s a socialising space for humans and for dogs,” said a Millgorve resident of five years.

“It’s for the wellbeing of the humans and dogs.

We’re both social creatures and we need that community and need that space.”

“I’m not against mountain bikers, I think it’s a good thing that there’s an additional amenity for an additional sport,” said the Warburton resident.

He claimed there was a suitable site on the other side of the park to accommodate the parking spaces, to which council officers explained there would be additional issues in doing so.

“Why should we sacrifice what we’ve got to accommodate something that they’re developing anyway. If they can’t fit it then they need to find a different site for it.”

The Millgrove resident called council’s plans to reduce the dog off-lead area a “compromise”.

“They realise, okay we can’t just displease all these people, so we’ll try to make a compromise, we’ll only take part of their land. But we don’t see why they have to take any. Our space is small enough as it is and this is our only space. Leave it as it is. Take another space.”

Locks go: Big chop for a worthy cause

By Taylah Eastwell A selfless Mount Evelyn girl who had been growing her lengthy locks for over three years made the big chop, donating her hair to those who have lost theirs while battling cancer.

11-year-old Jeanne Ostler had her hair cut short on Friday 26 February in order to donate the cuttings to the Cancer Council.

The hair will be used to make wigs for people experiencing hair loss during cancer treatment.

Jeanne said her and her mum decided to grow her hair for charity almost four years ago.

“We decided to grow it for someone who is in need of a wig, I thought it was a really good idea,” she said.

Ms Ostler’s mum, Emilie, said Jeanne’s family are “very touched“ by her generosity.

“The idea at first was me liking her long hair and not wanting her to cut it, so I suggested we could let it grow and eventually donate it to turn it into a wig for people affected by cancer treatment,” her mum said.

Detectives have released a digitally generated image as part of their investigation.

Police hunt Warbuton flasher Knox Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have released a digitally generated image as part of their investigation into an incident where a man exposed himself in Warburton earlier this year.

A 17-year-old woman was walking along the Yarra River Walk near Redwood Centre when she observed an unknown man about 6.10pm on 10 January.

The man looked at the woman while masturbating before hiding behind bushes and leaving the scene when more walkers approached the area.

The man was perceived to have an olive complexion, of average build with dark-coloured hair and a beard.

Police have released a digitally generated image of a man they believe could assist with their enquiries.

School, a Go Fund Me page was created to raise funds for the Cancer Council, with a goal of raising $1,000.

The page has exceeded its goal, currently at a total of almost $1200, which Jeanne described as “incredible”.

“We are very touched by her gesture to commit to it and to go to the end and take the responsibility for making speeches and to organise the donation process, we are very proud of what she is doing,” her mum said.

A B-double truck and car collided on the Melba Highway at Yering on Wednesday 3 March.

A Lilydale SES spokeswoman said the unit was called at 2.36pm to the collision on a “tight bend just before Chateu Yering“, where a 60-year-old male driver was trapped.

Seven Lilydale SES members attended the scene and worked to cut the man from the wreck before he was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man suffered lower body injuries.

The Star Mail understands a female passenger in her 70’s was also taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital via road ambulance. The woman suffered upper body injuries.

Both patients were in a stable condition when taken to hospital, Ambulance Victoria confirmed.

The truck driver was assessed at the scene and did not sustain serious injury.

Start small Begin with baby steps, often when tackling a big job such as clearing clutter, we can feel overwhelmed. Start with one room - the sense of achievement you feel when you have finished it will help you move onto the next.

Soldier stands tall again

By Taylah Eastwell The soldier has returned to the top of the Lilydale Main Street War Memorial after Lilydale RSL members pushed to complete the project envisioned by late club presidents Don Parsons and Paul Payne.

Lilydale RSL’s president, Bill Dobson said Mr Parsons and Mr Payne, who both sadly passed away last year, had done “a lot of preliminary work” in getting the project happening.

“We had to get a style for the soldier from somewhere, so they went down to Bonnie Doon to base it off that one. It was quite a bit of work involved, this new one was made by a sculptor and is made out of marble so it will never fade away,” Mr Dobson said.

Mt Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer said the original Lilydale War Memorial was unveiled to the community in May 1922 by the Governor of Victoria, the Earl of Stradbroke. The original design was a concrete statute of an Australian WWI soldier on top.

According to Mr McAleer, the statue did not last long, with the rifle coming off and the figure falling apart to such an extent that it was agreed to take it away completely in the late 1930’s.

Mr McAleer said there was “talk“ over the years about replacing the statue but nothing eventuated until 2018, when then president Don Parsons pushed to have the statue reinstalled and began working with Victorian stone mason James McAuley to come up with plans to reproduce the soldier in Carrara marble with a base of Harcourt granite.

Mr McAleer said the project cost $53,000, with the sub-branch receiving grants from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development and Department of Premier & Cabinet.

The vision of Mr Parsons and subsequent president Paul Payne has now officially come to fruition after the solider was erected on Wednesday 24 February with the help of large machinery.

“It’s in its place now and is really notice-

able as you drive up the road from Lilydale.

We have had a lot of fantastic replies from people that are delighted that it is finished which is wonderful,” Mr Dobson said.

“It was very important that we did this because those two blokes (Parsons and Payne) probably had 30 years experience with the RSL, plus a lot of great friendships. They were our two stalwarts of the club and revered mates, so we had to follow through and make sure this happened,” he said.

Lilydale RSL secretary Chris Newell said the project had been a “long time in the works“ and hoped the club had “done Don proud“.

Vice president Terry Hickey said the club would like to see this as “the start of a whole lot of renewal of the RSL’s activities in the community“.

“We’d like to attract people in the community who might be interested in getting involved, we’ve been quiet for a fair while so we are keen to regenerate a few things and this is a great beginning,“ he said.

Looking out: RSL boss wants young veterans involved

By Taylah Eastwell Lilydale RSL’s new president Bill Dobson is hoping to begin efforts to get younger veterans involved in the club.

Mr Dobson has stepped into the top role after the tragic passing of the sub-branch’s previous two presidents, Don Parsons and Paul Payne, who both passed away last year.

“We want to maintain the core values of the RSL which is welfare and looking after the ex-servicemen and their dependants. That is really important to us,” Mr Dobson said.

“But I also want to introduce a lot of younger people, whether it be the Afghanistan or Timor veterans and their families into the club because we want those people to run the club eventually,” he said.

Mr Dobson said around “80% of members of RSL clubs in Victoria are all over 70 years of age”, with the youngest member at the Lilydale sub-branch being 50 years of age.

“There are RSL’s closer to the city that have got Afghanistan veterans but we have not got them out here yet, so it is up to us to find them. They are out and about so we want those people to join and run the club in the future,” he said.

Mr Dobson is a former Vietnam Veteran.

He was conscripted into the army and served with the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps in Vietnam between in 1969 and 1970.

“When the prime minister at the time, Menzies, decided that our country would support America in the war against North Vietnam, he realised that he didn’t have enough soldiers to do the job so he introduced conscription,” he said.

“I was conscripted in 1968. My ‘lucky’

Mr Dobson said he was a compositor in the printing industry prior to his conscription and “wasn’t worried about going into the army, it was an adventure”.

“Of course, when any soldier arrived in Nui Dat Vietnam his thoughts would quickly change, it was about getting through the next 12 months and getting home again,” he said.

Mr Dobson spent 12 months, 16 days and 4 hours in Nui Dat Vietnam in the 10FP unit, which was regarded as the ‘sharp end’ for Australian forces.

“Yes, I was counting towards the end,” he said.

Mr Dobson said he has not held any previous RSL executive or commitee position as he was told in 1971 that Vietnam was considered a conflict and not a war.

“As a result they wouldn’t accept my service membership, later the number of casualties were announced and between 3 and 5 million are estimated to have died during the 1960s in Vietnam, most people would consider that a war not a conflict.

Mr Dobson said he decided to get involved after noticing the efforts of previous presidents Don Parsons and Paul Payne and realising they had projects in place that needed completing.

“I would like to be part of finishing the work that these two dedicated past presidents started, not suggesting it is entirely up to me, the experienced executive of Chris Newell, Terry Hickey and Rupert Johnston would get the projects completed without my input.

“We are all volunteers that believe in the core values of the RSL, mateship, empathy, respect and we exist to commemorate the sacrifices of previous generations and to provide help for those that have served this country and their dependents,” he said.

The tale of a caged child Zana Fraillon’s young adult novel The Bone Sparrow tells the story of nine-year-old Subhi, a member of the Rohingya people from Burma (today’s Myanmar) who was born and raised in an unnamed Australian detention centre. Life in this permanently fenced and forgotten camp is all he has ever known.

While Subhi and other asylum seekers are waiting to be processed as refugees, they have endured much hostility and abuse.

Fortunately, the boy’s vivid imagination and unique use of illustrative language helps to ease the physical, emotional and psychological trauma that we as readers feel on their behalf.

PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN However, the more Subhi leans toward fantasy as a way to cope with the tragically small(-minded) world in this story, the more

we fear for his welfare. The use of first-person narrative in present tense further enhances the horror and pain the child constantly experiences and “naturally” considers as part of his reality.

To borrow the words of renowned English poet William Blake, the more Subhi is able to “see a world in a grain of sand,/ and a Heaven in a wild flower”, the better we get to understand how “a robin red breast in a cage/ puts all Heaven in a rage”. Precisely because this story of a caged child is beautifully told, it is both alarming and distressing.

It breaks one’s heart to see how children slowly lose their innocence as they grow up

and encounter adulthood. This suffering is universal and we all know it well, which is why Subhi’s story is so powerful.

Also highlighted in The Bone Sparrow is the story of Jimmie, a girl from the other side of the wired fence who is grieving the loss of her mother. As Subhi helps Jimmie read and understand the tragic past of her family, they form an unlikely friendship. While both are disadvantaged and marginalised, the children know they have to be brave to find a way to freedom.

Indeed, The Bone Sparrow is ultimately a book about courage and undying optimism, especially in the face of adversity. As readers finish the book, they would recall the author’s dedication at the start: “To those who refuse to be blinded by the glare or deafened by the hush, who are brave enough to question, and curious enough to explore. To those who will not forget. You will make a difference. And to the rest of us, so that we may learn how.”

The Bone Sparrow won the 2017 Readings Young Adult Book Prize and the Australian Book Industry Awards 2017 – Book of the Year for Older Children (age range 8 to 14 years), and was one of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Notables 2017 for older readers.

It was also shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, the Queensland Literary Awards and the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards in that year.

‘Lucky’ local beats odds

By Jed Lanyon Former Launching Place resident Stephen Piercy is urging Yarra Valley residents to learn the symptoms of cardiac arrest after suffering his second heart attack at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in May last year.

Australians are given a one in ten chance of survival from cardiac arrest, as Mr Piercy considers himself to be “incredibly lucky” to still be alive. Even more so as cardiac arrest survival rates significantly worsened during the first wave of the pandemic.

Thankfully the 67 year old knew the warning signs and notified how wife, who called for an ambulance. He received an AED shock en route the hospital and has recovered well.

Now he wants to make sure others are aware of the dangers of a heart attack and how to respond.

Mr Piercy shared his recollections from the experience.

“It started really around midday. We had an estate agent out to look at the house because

we were selling it. I had a bit of a niggly pain in my chest ... I didn’t think too much of it.”

Later in the afternoon he explained he felt more chest pain as well as pain from his arm.

“From that, I thought this isn’t right. We called the ambulance and I don’t remember, but the ambulance arrived within five or seven minutes but by that stage I was in a fair amount of pain and it was distressing.

“After that, I don’t really remember a lot, until I woke up in the ambulance at Seville.”

It was there where Mr Piercy was transferred into the care of the mobile intensive care ambulance (MICA).

“The next thing I remember was vaguely going down the freeway and then I woke up in the operating theater and the procedure was over.”

Healesville paramedic Laura Wirth described Mr Piercy as “phenomenally lucky” to have realised his symptoms and to have experienced his cardiac arrest in the care of trained paramedics.

“What happens in those first few minutes

makes the biggest difference,” said Ms Wirth.

“So if someone sees you go into cardiac arrest, they do CPR and they put on a defib, your chances of survival goes all the way up to 70 per cent.”

The latest Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry report found that 76 per cent of cardiac arrests occur within the home, while two out of every three patients are males.

Mr Piecy urged older males not to be stubborn in ignoring any potential symptoms.

“I didn’t down a Quick-Eze thinking I had indigestion. My wife’s step father, he was downing Quick-Eze not realising he was having a heart attack and he died,” he said.

“People my age, it’s typical of what they do, they think ‘I’ll be right mate’ but it’s the wrong attitude. You’ve got to change your attitude towards these things. You’ve got to realise any symptom. The pain can be in your neck, it can be in your jaw and it’s mainly in the left arm but you can have it in the right arm.”

Ms Wirth said that those were the classic symptoms of impending cardiac arrest but

that they could vary as well.

Ms Wirth and other local paramedics will continue to educate local community groups about the issue as part of the Healesville Heart Safe Program and will be present at local farmer’s markets with the goal of improving cardiac survival rates. Ms Wirth urges locals to download the GoodSAM app “If someone is experiencing cardiac arrest and a triple zero call is made. Straight away, the app goes ping and the three closest people to that cardiac arrest get notified on their phones and are asked to help.

“We would love anybody and everybody to sign up for the GoodSAM app.”

The app also highlights the closest 24/7 accessible AEDs. There are seven located in Healesville and surrounds as Ms Wirth asks Healesvillians to know where the closest AED is to home.

Where’s the dam money?

By Jed Lanyon Maroondah Dam’s park is set to be upgraded as the state government announced a $52.4 million investment for Victorian parks in the budget, but Eildon MP Cindy McLeish has called on the government to reveal just how much will be spent on Maroondah Reservoir Park.

Planned works to Maroondah Reservoir Park will include a refurbished toilet block, new barbeques, new picnic tables and improved pathways with those works expected to be complete by November 2022.

“We’re investing $52.4 million to maintain and upgrade visitor facilities in parks and open spaces right across Victoria, including at Maroondah Reservoir Park,” a government spokesperson told Star Mail.

Ms McLeish, who has advocated for upgrades to the park, said she hopes to see the park returned to its former glory and wanted transparency for local residents to undermailcommunity.com.au

Friends of Maroondah Reservoir Park held their first working bee last month and plan to continue to restore the area through gardening, pressure washing surfaces and more.

Wood goes underwater

By Jed Lanyon YAVA’s newest exhibition features the work of Ian George, a local timber sculptor who is showcasing his woodworks of underwater life.

TIDAL opened on Friday 5 March and features 38 pieces of Mr Gerorge’s work, described as “amazing” by YAVA CEO Kate Baker.

“I have to say the display of work looks incredible ... This particular series is inspired by water life because Ian liked to go diving,” she said.

Mr George’s exhibition plays with the concepts of gravity, movement and tension in a way that leaves the viewer in wonder.

“For me, it’s about the shapes. The fact that they are sea creatures is kind of incidental, but they are interestingly abstract shapes themselves,” Mr George said. “I liked the tentacles and the waving element and things moving in the sea and then contrasting that with shells

and those hard sharp shapes.

“The theme is a bit odd for being out in a country town, we’re a fair way away from the sea.

“I’m a great believer in the beauty in crafting things. It always annoys me a little bit that modern art has moved away from the idea of craft. Not that there’s anything wrong with the ideas behind modern art, but I like that idea of crafting and the skill that it’s taken to create something.

“I like to create things that show a certain amount of skill and the beauty and elegance of movement within them. I’m hoping people can basically enjoy what they’re looking at. Enjoy the shapes, enjoy what they’re seeing and enjoy the craft that has gone into them.”

Mr George’s works are all unpainted and feature a clear finish.

“I like to let the timber speak for itself,” he said. “There’s a beauty in the timber that needs to be expressed as part of this. I like the idea of

the random chance element that comes with this.

“You cut into a piece of timber and you never know what’s going to be in it. My manta ray piece has these big voids in it and when I was cutting through it I found these big bark inclusions and you work out how you’re going to work them into the piece or you accept there is going to be an element of chance with the piece as well.”

Mr George worked as a media studies teacher at a high school before using his longservice leave to focus on his craft from the end of 2019 and eventually retiring. He joked that he was lucky to miss out on teaching remotely throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

He spent the last 17 years working with timber and was set on the path of sculpting it after his son, four at the time, asked him to create a sword.

“Being a sculptor I got a bit carried away

and made this sword with wavy edges that had quite a barbarian or aisan look to it. I made it at the school because I had all the equipment there and then all the students there wanted their own.

“They wanted to make their own. We spent quite a few years making swords in classes and they loved it. That’s how I got into sculptural wood.”

Mr George said most of the timber he works with is Australian, with the exception of a few exotic pieces.

“A lot of it is salvaged timber. So quite a bit of this timber is from trees that have fallen on the property I used to own or things that have been salvaged from places.

“I’m not particularly interested in using timbers that require high levels of damage to the environment.”

Aussie craft cider crushing it as festival looms First there was the craft beer revolution, and now craft cider is growing at the same rate as craft beer according to Dan Murphy’s sales data from the last 12 months.

“We have almost 100 Aussie craft ciders in our range, and customers are loving them,“ said Dan Murphy’s craft beer and cider category manager Billy Ryan.

“The rise of craft cider is part of a wider trend of customers wanting to support independent, locally-made and grown products.

We also see customers drinking less, but better.“ The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the growth of craft cider according to Jane Anderson from Cider Australia.

“Many smaller, craft cider producers that have traditionally sold most of their cider in restaurants and bars had to explore takeaway and online sales channels and as a result, a broader range of craft ciders have become available in local bottle shops - helping customers find new favourites,” she said.

When Covid-19 was declared a pandemic last March, for Coldstream’s Napoleone Cider it meant that the team had to not only close the doors to the cellar door they share with Punt Road Wines, but that the restaurants and bars they supplied shut down too.

“We make new-world ciders - dry but not overly so - exclusively from apples and pears that we grow in our Coldstream orchards. We

use techniques like skin contact, natural ferments and solera blending to give our ciders great complexity,” he explained.

Now in its second year, Australian Cider Day is on Saturday 13 March 2021 and Napoleone will host a celebration from 10am until last light with food trucks, live music and speciality ciders.

“It’s harvest time in the Yarra Valley and traditionally a time of celebration - we want people to come and join the party. Taste something new, listen to some live music and revel in the harvest.“ In June 2019, Cider Australia launched the 100 per cent Australian grown trust mark to help consumers identify and buy local products, and it is now displayed on hundreds of ciders across Australia.

“The Australian craft cider category is dynamic and creative and our producers will keep making premium ciders crafted with natural ingredients that have clarity around their content and origin,” Ms Anderson said.

“Authenticity is growing in importance to consumers. Drinkers are looking for real, honest drinks with clarity about their ingredients and the people that have made them.

A decade of IWD portraits Every year since 2012, Warburton resident Suzanne Phoenix has curated an International Women’s Day photography portrait series What Does International Women’s Day Mean to Me? leading to a collection of over 100 portraits featuring cis and trans women and nonbinary people from many different corners of Melbourne. The series is a visual snapshot of the fierce, funny and extraordinary who inspire her world.

Due to Covid restrictions in the project’s tenth year, it hasn’t been possible for Ms Phoenix to create new portraits. However, she is celebrating with a self-publication of the portraits, the individuals responses to the importance of IWD and documentation of the events and poster paste ups from the project.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have worked on this series over the past decade and created portraits with over 100 cis and trans women and gender diverse people in Melbourne,” Ms Phoenix said.

“It gives me a place to respond to the inequality, discrimination, sexism, misogyny and gendered violence we experience every day in Australia. I put my energy into making positive images and increase visibility through varied platforms for people to engage with these issues.”

The impressive list includes many well-known artists, activists, authors, musicians, performers, photographers, comedians and fashion designers alongside boxers, human rights workers, massage therapists and those from all walks of life. Vicious in the Valley The Yarra Valley’s brightest footy talent and local characters descended upon Healesville Recreation Reserve on Saturday 27 February to take part in the third Valley Vicious Rett Awareness Cup. The aim of the day was to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Rett Syndrome - a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females and with a prevalence of one in about 15,000 females - leads to severe impairments in life, including a child’s ability to speak, walk and eat, and infants and children with the disorder gradually lose previously acquired abilities, such as the control of the hands.

Centre in the lead up to Christmas. Many locals far and wide were able to keep up their Christmas tradition in getting a family photo with ‘The Real Santa’ who they had grown to love.

The unlikely tandem tallied upwards of $30,000 from their family Christmas photos and then selected four charities to each receive

$8400 to help make the lives of children better.

The four recipients of the funds included: Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, A Better Life For Foster Kids, HeartKids and Chum Creek’s Good Life Farm. The organisations shared how the funds had already been put to good use.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids CEO and founder Sally Beard told Star Mail the donation came as a “delightful surprise”.

“We’re very, very grateful on behalf of the children, whose lives that it will impact,” she said. “We have absolutely put that money to good use.”

Ms Beard shared that the $8400 donation from Branded is aiding 112 children in need with care packs filled with toiletries, spare changes of clothes, a toy and more.

Based on the novel by Patrick Ness, Chaos Walking is a compelling character-driven sci-fi drama.

On a distant colony planet where all the women died and the male survivors’ thoughts form an audible cloud known as “the Noise” around their heads, Todd (Tom Holland) must protect a new arrival, a girl named Viola (Daisy Ridley), from the cruel Mayor Prentiss (Mads Mikkelsen).

The film has a sci-fi frontier Western aesthetic and strong forward momentum, with both internal and external factors driving Viola and Todd onward: Viola must signal her ship before it leaves her behind, and Prentiss’s forces want to stop her from ushering a new wave of colonists.

Mikkelsen plays a soft-spoken but deeply-intimidating villain, and Todd and Viola each experience different forms of culture shock in the other’s company, in a moving and often funny dynamic. The Noise is a clever medium for bursts of suspense, subterfuge and in-universe exposition,

but some viewers might find the constant “chatter” aggravating. The plot also introduces several plot-threads that pay off effectively later on.

The zealous preacher Aaron (David Oyelowo) and Prentiss’s son David (Nick Jonas) are underdeveloped and underutilised as antagonists, and the ending is abrupt.

The film also establishes the Spackle, an intelligent species native to the planet, but only uses them for a cursory threat and a red-herring.

While it falters in the broader worldbuilding, Chaos Walking is a tense, touching sci-fi adventure.

Being ‘compassionate’ is not always that easy Focal Point Well here we are in March ’21, a long way it seems from March ’20, when our lives were suddenly turned upside down. We have done well to survive the year and have learned so much. However many of us seem to have lost some of the courteousness that we exercised in the supermarket queues during the pandemic, and seem to be slipping when it comes to being compassionate. We get angry more quickly when someone stirs our sense of injustice in what we believe to be right or wrong.

Only ten days ago, with all of us compliant ones wearing our masks, we saw crowds at the tennis and in marches for various causes, quite blatantly ignoring the mask rule, and we railed against that which we saw as an injustice.

At times we see people on the streets in a down state and don’t bother to know what their life story is, but rather we move round them easily and are often quick to judge. Yes, and they might be using alcohol or some other substance, but maybe that is the only anesthetic against the pain of life that they have.

In my experience I have uncovered some

intelligent and well educated people who could teach me a lot, yet difficulties in life had taken a toll on them.

Real compassion, which at times defies reason, was modeled by Jesus, who healed the sick, the blind and the mute, and crowds gathered for His healing touch after travelling by foot for days carrying their sick.

His compassion was further modeled by St Francis of Assisi – who, from a rich family, disgusted his father, and gave away his wealth to the poor.

Then there was Mother Teresa, who would often just hold the dying in filthy Calcutta gutters.

All three modelled compassion as servanthood. Jesus said while on earth, “If you want to be the greatest, you must be the servant of all”.

However, sometimes the bad news in our world can be overwhelming, and we don’t know how to respond to it, so some of us hide away with our hands over our eyes and ears.

An alternate answer is to find a group that we can be part of who can support and encourage us and to help us to help others deal with this bad news.

That group of course needs to be a nurturing one rather than a militant group on a mission, right wing or left. Don’t struggle on your own; try getting into a group; even a small one of positive and encouraging people where you can experience ‘community’ in a constructive form. For starters you could try a Church Life Group who will help you put legs on an old bible promise of God, “That His Compassions are new every morning”.

There are quite a few other groups within this readership area. A phone call to a church leader or the shire would be a start.

LETTERS Tourist circus unwelcome I write in response to Jim Childs letter Consultation continues (Star Mail 2 March). Unfortunately consulting doesn’t seem to involve much listening.

For several years Old Warburton residents have been telling Yarra Ranges Council we do not want to live in the middle of a mountain bike park. The master plan (soon to be rubber stamped by the Planning Minister) shows our small community encircled by mountain bike trails. Council says this park will attract 845 riders a day and over 2000 during events. The road to the Mt Tugwell trailhead goes straight past our houses and there are several places in Old Warburton where riders would access the trails.

This tourist circus on our doorstep would have a profound effect on the environment and our quality of life. Even more worrying is the increase in bushfire risk all these visitors would bring to an area already rated as extreme risk.

Myself and other residents have brought these concerns to council many times, but noone is listening. All the big decisions regarding this project were made a long time ago. For our council and State Government, consultation is just the last bit of PR they do before going ahead with whatever it was they planned to do in the first place. *Note - rider figures of 845 and 2000 a day are from page 11 of the Traffic Impact Assessment which can be found on council’s Rideyarraranges website.

The grave of Charles Cerini I am writing out of concern that the grave of father Charles Cerini at Westburn Cemetery is virtually unmarked.

as parish priest in the early 50’s after a stint as much respected chaplain at Pentridge.

During his pastorate in the Valley he reached out to all - regardless of creed or colour.

He literally built St Joseph’s school at Warburton and drove the bus to pick up the kids as

far as Woori Yallack.

It was said that some of the members of the Adventist Community gave him a hand in building.

Charlie asked one elderly member - who was past physical labour - to tell stories while he (Cerini) built!

Father Cerini had the longest funeral in 1959 that the Warburton area has ever seen.

As witness for a man, “For all seasons,” I would suggest that a suitable plaque be erected over his grave.

We can ride, too Box Hill Institute and the Yarra Ranges Council have partnered to develop the We Can Ride Youth Mountain Bike program supported by the Victoria Health Promotions Foundation (VicHealth).

The program aims to get youth aged between seven and 17 years onto their bikes and create a community of young riders. It particularly aims to get more primary aged females and female and male teenagers into riding, equipping them with the necessary skills and giving them insight into how a bike works.

Additional benefits to the program will be encouraging resilience and confidence in young people and supporting positive mental health across the Yarra Ranges.

Box Hill Institute CEO, Vivienne King said, “Our Lilydale Lakeside campus is ideally positioned to support great initiatives like We Can Ride and to engage the community to create awareness, interest and participation.

Box Hill Institute is exploring ways to support Dr Cranky’s Bikes for Kids initiative by making Lilydale Lakeside campus a site for the community to donate old bikes and having students work on rebuilding them as part of their course, after which the bike can be donated to families and kids in the region who would like a bike.

Three players from Eastern Ranges’ Under 19 Girls squad featured in VFLW action donning the brown and gold for the weekend against Darebin.

Jess Grace, Tilly Hardy and Izzy Khoury all took part in Hawthorn’s 23 point win.

Yarra Junction’s barefoot bowls have been a success.

Warby’s centenary day is on the way Warburton Bowls Club Two wins from three Pennant games for the Burras this week, with both weekend teams consolidating their positions in the top four leading into the finals. The Midweek team struggled away, but have retained top position on the ladder.

The Weekend Warburton 1 side played Vermont South 1 away needing a win to ensure a place in the finals. The Burras trailed for most of the game before they lifted in the final ends to record a 12 shot victory, 87 shots to 75.

Rink scores were as follows: P. Woods 25 14; A. Donohue 21/ 16; P. Caneva 15/ 22 and J. Van Der Zweep 26/ 23. They play Mooroolbark 1 side at home this week in the Centenary Game.

Warburton 2 side once again started sluggishly overall against Boronia 3 at home.

They were three rinks down at the break before everyone lifted across the green to record another solid come from behind victory, 83 shots to 64. Rink scores were P. Summers 19/ 17; C. Gell 14/ 16; G. Wynd 25/ 14 and T. Heyward 25/ 17. They play Monbulk 2 away this week in the final game before the finals.

The Midweek Warburton 1 side played Heathmont 2 away and went down by 10 shots, 49 to 59. Rink scores were as follows: G. Walsh 16/ 17; P. Woods 24/ 17 and S. Lord 9/ 25. They play Mooroolbark 2 away this week with two more games before the finals. mailcommunity.com.au

The Wednesday Night Barefoot Bowls Triples Competition completed the round robin games last week with the Finals’ Night being held this week. Billy Urquhart (Green Machine) was the first person to hit the jack and the Pensioners and G Force were the highest first round winners. There were several close games leading up to what promises to be an exciting Finals’ series. The Finals’ Night will see the Top 8 and the Bottom 8 play- off respectively in sudden death six end games to eventually have a winner in each section.

The Club is looking forward to its Centenary Day this coming Saturday 13 March with many past members returning to celebrate the occasion.

The Warburton Pink Day Barefoot Bowls Triples Tournament will be held on Sunday 11 April from 12pm This will be a female only event with all proceeds going towards the Breast Cancer Foundation. Entries to be in by 31 March. $10 per player. Contact Max Reynolds: 0438184428.

With one pennant already

achieved this season both the midweek and the weekend teams are in the mix for another. The midweek players enjoyed success this week. The twelve-a-side team travelled to Bayswater to take on the second placed side in cool breezy conditions, and won two of the three rinks to register an overall 65 shots to 56 win. This result lifts Yarra Junction to second position, just above Bayswater on percentage.

The sixes played their first home game of the summer season against Bennetswood, and won both rinks to take 14 points with a convincing overall victory of 35 shots to 21.

The weekend team travelled to Croydon for the penultimate game of the season. It proved a close-fought affair,with the rinks being shared two-all, and the overall result hanging on the final end of the final rink, with Yarra Junction eventually prevailing 80 shots to 75. This virtually ensures a third place finish with one match still to play, and the finals in two weeks.

Barefoot bowls on Friday evenings continues to be popular, with the pleasant late summer evenings bringing out a good crowd, with food, music, a bar, and all equipment provided. The ladies night on Sunday clashed with other long weekend activities but was enjoyed by a small group of enthusiastic women with all saying they would do it again.

Healesville Social Golf Club A quiet day on the course with many members away for the long weekend.

Howard Vaughan (15) played a steady game to come in first with 36 points Stableford, with Karl Hradsky (14) coming in second with 35 points.

Chris Handasyde (4) followed in third with 33 points. Chris also had a very accurate game off the tee, hitting 3 of the Nearest to Pins and having the best score on the Secret Holes (10 over 4 holes).

Greg Urquhart managed the last Nearest the Pin, taking it away from Chris.

- Karl Hradsky Warburton Golf Club The latest McGrann qualifier is John Haynes.

John is an early bird, always playing in the first group of the day, which clearly worked for him on Wednesday 3 March, as he recorded an excellent Nett 66. He just edged-out Ray “Happy” Gilmore, who returned a 67. These good scores meant that the balls only extended to Nett 70.

NTP’s were won by Secretary Murch (3rd), Ron Hottes (9th), Paul Mason (10th and 12th). As an aside, it was very pleasing to see 9-time Club Champion, Paul Mason, back out on the course, after an extended layoff and in good form.

As we close-in on the Shootout finale in 3 weeks, every win is vital now to the chances of those regulars who are vying for a Top-10 spot in the twilight competition.

Neil “The Flying Scot” Leckenby took out the top prize on Saturday 6 March with a solid +2. Neil won on a countback to Michael Pinkster, who had to be content with the runner-up voucher. Balls only went down to +1, so there were plenty of +2’s and +1’s. NTP winners were Sam Dennis (3rd), Bruno Kennedy (5th), Lee Creedy (9th) and Howard McDonald, (both the 12th and 15th).
