Trapped in Chile

By Taylah Eastwell Belgrave’s Sarah Clark boarded a plane headed for Chile, South America, in February this year with dreams of snapping breathtaking photographs and broadening her language skills through an international exchange program.

As a creative arts and Spanish student from Deakin University, she was thrilled to be accepted into a semester of exchange at Universidad del Desarrollo.

But with Covid worsening, Ms Clark only completed two weeks of her exchange on campus before the country went into quarantine for six months.

The trip of a lifetime transformed into a frightening and lonely year-long ordeal for Ms Clark, who remains stranded in Santiago without any financial assistance from Australian agencies.

Ms Clark’s friends and mother have created a GoFundMe in hopes of raising funds to help

with living costs and the hefty costs of a flight home and the necessary quarantine.

The Star Mail caught up with Ms Clark on December 8, two days before Santiago entered yet another total lockdown.

“I had an AirBnB booked when I arrived and the plan was to meet people in my classes and organise to share some accommodation but that didn’t happen because we only had two weeks on campus,” Ms Clark said.

Ms Clark had no option but to complete her international exchange program online over Zoom from her isolated apartment.

“I ended up having to leave the apartment I was in because I could not afford it anymore and did not want to be myself in quarantine for six months,” she said.

A professor at Universidad del Desarrollo put Ms Clark in touch with a family who were looking for someone to help care for their autistic son, Diego.

“I moved in with a family. I help their son who has autism for five hours a day in exchange for them feeding me and letting me use their electricity and internet because I just couldn’t afford to pay anymore,” she said.

“They don’t speak a word of English and my Spanish, it has improved but its definitely not great, I don’t understand the language because it is very fast,” she said.

Ms Clark said that when the Federal Government encouraged overseas Australians to come home she had “no way of leaving”, with military police patrolling the streets and permission required to leave her residence.

“Thousands of Australian’s were told to come home but there was no way of getting anywhere, no way of passing the military, the government is in full control. It’s very different to Australia,” she said.

“Everything is documented, to leave the house you need a document. The borders were closed. Even people who went to the airport on the day of their flight that had it cancelled had to get permission to transition from the airport back to their hotel. It’s very strict, the military have guns, huge rifles.”

Ms Clark said during lockdown she has only been allowed out twice per week to get pharmaceuticals or groceries and had to apply for a “permission” to do so.

“I probably cry five times a week over watching the news or being scared about something.

I feel like a little kid sometimes because I can’t call someone to come have a drink or watch a movie, it’s really difficult.”

Ms Clark said she contacted Casey MP Tony Smith and was advised to contact the Australian embassy in Chile, register on DFAT and

Ms Clarke has been registered on DFAT since March and has visited the Australian embassy in Chile twice. She did not apply for the $2,000 SmartTraveller loan as her debt was “already growing daily”.

“There’s so many people that need to come home and want to come home, some in worse stages than others, some with kids, but nothing has been done,” she said.

Affairs and Trade continues to provide consular support from its diplomatic network across South American and encourage those in need of assistance to reach out.

“Sarah’s situation in Santiago has been raised with my office by a family member. Her case has been raised directly with the Office of the Foreign Minister, Senator Payne and through them, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including the closest Australian Embassy in South America,“ Mr Smith said.

Centrelink has also repeatedly denied Ms Clark’s claims.

“I applied for my Austudy in January and everything was a go ahead, I sent receipts for my flights so they knew it wasn’t a last minute decision to leave the country. But because I submitted my last paper when I was in Chile, they denied it,” she said.

Ms Clark contacted Deakin University for assistance and said they have given her a total of $1500 so far and gave her the option of booking her on the next flight available.

“I had to push and push. I still had my loans and things to pay for in Australia that are regular direct debits,” she said.

“Flights range from $5,000 to $23,000 and stop at five different countries, so all up its about a 56 hour flight,” she said.

“I’m anxious as it is and I don’t want to be putting myself in a position where I’m in another country which speaks another language with no money, no support and the stress of trying to work out how to swap my luggage on and off,” she said.

Ms Clark said it was not uncommon for flights to be cancelled or to stop in one country for indefinite periods of time waiting for more passengers. She is hopeful that cheaper and shorter flights through New Zealand will soon become available.

She is currently an illegal in Chile as her student visa recently expired. She has applied for a working visa but is yet to be approved.

Ms Clark’s best friend of 20 years and the creator of the GoFundMe campaign, Kirilly Pollock said the way the Australian government had treated her friend was “appalling”.

“We’ve had to go thru all these lockdowns but everyone overseas, it’s not just Sarah there’s families, they’ve just been forgotten to be honest,” she said.

Aged care decision pause

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges councillors have opted to wait for the outcome of the Royal Commission into Aged Care before making a decision on outsourcing some of its aged care and disability services to external providers.

Councillors debated the issue at length at the 8 December council meeting and heard from a council staff member potentially impacted by a transition to a market-based provider.

Councillors ultimately decided to wait until the Royal Commission handed down its findings in order to make a decision on changes to services under the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and the State Government’s ‘Home & Community Care Program for Younger People’ (HACCPYP).

The results of the Royal Commission are expected by late February.

The proposal put to council stated it would no longer be viable to continue to deliver entry level services such as domestic assistance, property maintenance, personal and respite care as the Federal Government moves towards a market based and consumer driven system under its aged care roadmap.

Gayl Lyons, who has worked for the shire for 35 years, feared she would see a pay cut if council opted to transition some of its aged care services to another provider.

“We object to council’s proposal to outsource community care services. The current service is a crucial community asset that should not be handed over to the private sector,” she said.

Ms Lyons urged council to offer redundancies to staff members who do not wish to transition to a new employer.

Council employees were assured that their entitlements, wages and hours would remain the same as part of any tender agreement in the outsourcing of the services, but that it would only be subject to the current enterprise bargaining agreement of the new provider.

The Australian Services Union (ASU), who represent the impacted council staff, had urged councillors to reject the outsourcing of in-home aged services calling it a risk to vulnerable residents and a threat to carers’ livelihoods.

ASU representative Will Wyatt estimated the difference in wages for council staff compared to those of private providers to be $8 less per hour.

“What we have seen is large numbers of employees who have transitioned to these providers losing out significantly until it’s dried up so much that they’re basically forced to leave.

There is no dignity in that,” he said.

“They won’t be offered more work, they’ll maintain their hours for a while, they’ll maintain their conditions for a while. Eventually though, the inheriting organisation will cut them loose.”

ASU branch secretary Lisa Darmanin said, “The Australian Services Union thanks each of the councillors who considered the interests of vulnerable residents and dedicated aged and disability carers by rejecting privatisation.”

“Tt’s great news for service users and dedicated aged and disability carers that management’s push to privatise was rejected.

“The outsourcing of services has created a crisis on the frontline of local government, and we will push back against each attempt to outsource any more jobs or reduce services.”

Councillors were split on the original proposal with Jim Child and Richard Higgins making it clear they wished to make a decision sooner rather than later.

“This motion is telling us we need to be prepared when it (the Royal Commission) comes down to keep moving and without losing any more traction,” Cr Higgins said.

“It is an extremely difficult position to be in, but we need to take the front foot and be responsible and try and do the right thing and work through this so that everybody can get the best outcome.

“I don’t believe that waiting two months is going to change anything because it doesn’t matter who we go with; they’re going to be governed by all those changes and recommendations that the Royal Commission come down with, end of story.”

Councillors Tim Heenan, Catherine Burnett-Wake and Len Cox spoke passionately against the motion.

“This decision that we make tonight has got nothing to do with the care of our older residents and for the care of our longstanding employees in the Yarra Ranges,” Cr Heenan said.

“It’s just about the economics and finances going forward, and I cannot, and will not support this decision tonight based on that.

“We have been given a lot of information of what’s going to happen and I feel that the information that we’ve been given is almost paramount to a fear campaign that if we don’t

do this we’re going to be caught with such an adverse effect against private companies that we won’t be able to compete with, because of course, our costs will be too high.

“Other aspects of what’s been put to us are more about understanding that as we go forward there will be protection for the employees. There will be in the short term, but that will disappear. The fact that we state in the actual motion that we acknowledge and recognise their significant contributions, well if we recognise the significant contributions we would be putting forward an opportunity for redundancies for those workers who have worked so hard for so long.”

Mayor Fiona McAllister supported waiting.

“It’s a decision we have to make with head and heart and I think that’s what I see playing out before us tonight,” she said.

“It may surprise you to say although I think there has been a huge body of work come before us tonight, that I am also going to support a pause and I do it with very mixed emotions and thinking through everything I have heard and read.

“I feel very well informed but this is a decision that I would not like us to be making split almost in half and if it’s a matter of a few months and the finding of the commission that may produce enough light on the issue and affirm probably what we already know in the decision we are making tonight, then it’s probably worth waiting.

“It will not be an easy decision to make in three months in the same way it’s not an easy decision before us tonight, but I do feel that it is probably the right thing for us to do.”

Grandmothers demand action on Human Rights Day

By Taylah Eastwell With Human Rights Day falling on Thursday 10 December, a group of protestors gathered outside Acting Minister for Immigration Alan Tudge’s office calling for better treatment of refugees.

Grandmothers for Refugees members held handmade signs and submitted letters to Mr Tudge calling on him to release the hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers currently in various places of detention - including those in community detention, closed detention centres and alternate places of detention, such as hotels.

Group member Prue Licht, from Belgrave, said there are hundreds of people currently in detention who arrived after July 2013, when Kevin Rudd announced that no asylum seekers who arrive on our shores by boat would ever settle in Australia.

“A whole group were brought here when the Medevac legislation was in force which was rescinded, but during the period it actually existed a whole group were brought here and are now in Kangaroo Point in Brisbane or the Mantra here in Preston,” she said.

“They haven’t received medical treatment and some have been there for over a year.”

Ms Licht said the number of people still detained in detention centres is concerning given they have committed no crime.

“Their only crime is to come by boat after a particular date. People who came before that date are in the community so there is a huge issue with them being in detention and not being processed,” she said.

Grandmothers for Refugees Co-ordinator Virginia Schneiders said a recent poll showed a majority of LNP voters wanted an end to detention.

“But the government isn’t even taking any notice of them and this is the problem, they are just not held to account,” she said.

The group will continue to advocate at Knox each Wednesday and at Belgrave roundabout on Saturday mornings.

“The best outcome would be for them to be released so they can live safely in the community, be supported to find jobs and make new lives here, where they can become productive members of society,” said Ms Licht.

Leg dangling on the cards

By Mitchell Clarke The iconic, decades old tradition of passengers dangling their legs off the side of Puffing Billy could become a regular feature again, almost three years after it was suspended.

The popular practice, which many associate with the historic steamer, was brought to an abrupt halt following a collision between the train and a minibus in March 2018.

Puffing Billy CEO Steve O’Brien confirmed to the Star Mail that sitting on the sills of the train would be revisited under a trial after the peak season.

“The trial is the first step, which will more than likely begin in February/March, but we’ll take a look at how well it works and if successful, we’ll be looking to bring it back for good,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said an “extensive investigation process” had been carried out following the board’s “conservative approach” to the crash.

The lengthy investigation identified level crossings posed the biggest risk to safety, which prompted the State Government and the board to fund boom gates at three notorious crossings.

Numerous other safety measures, including inward tilting sills, have been implemented.

“We’ve looked at a whole host of measures which we’ve done to make crossings safer. It’s been a long journey to get here but we’ve got to the stage where we can now have a trial run,” he explained.

Mr O’Brien said the domestic market had shown a real interest in the ‘leg dangling’ experience. The tour operator recorded an 18 per cent drop in the domestic market following the bus crash.

“Research indicates that although people love the heritage rail and the smell, more people like the Dandenong Ranges and getting to experience it, so to sit on the sills with your legs out, you’re actually able to get a lot closer to nature,” he said.

“It’s a unique experience and we’re not aware of any other tourism operators offering a similar thing.

“Victorians just know it as the Puffing Billy experience. Now that we are purely focusing on our domestic market, it’s really exciting to be able to bring this back.”

Testing clinic moves out

By Taylah Eastwell The EACH Covid-19 testing site in Emerald has moved out of the Hills Hub to a new location, leaving community groups that gather inside the hub eager to get back to business.

The Emerald Hills hub is home to Emerald Men’s Shed, Hills She Shed, Emerald University of the Third Age (U3A and the Puffing Billy Toy Library.

The hub was taken over as a Covid testing site from July 22 until December 4, but testing has recently relocated to 348 Belgrave Gembrook Rd Emerald (adjacent to Emerald Medical Centre).

Members of the Emerald Men’s Shed are looking forward to being able to meet again at the hub, having only spent a total of 10 weeks at their new Hills Hub location since first moving in on February 11.

in contact via email and conference calls.

Secretary of Emerald Men’s Shed Tom Connolly said most of the men found lockdown pretty hard, particularly as the pandemic continued.

“It was alright at the early stages but as the pandemic continued we started to run out of work to do at home, so it was starting to get hard that way,” he said.

“Being men were not very good at sitting down and doing nothing,” he said.

The men said they missed the community interaction of being in the Hill’s Hub, and value the visitors they get to meet as people travel through Emerald.

Vice President of Emerald Men’s Shed Alan Bennett said it is great the men can now get back together.

“We don’t talk about mental health because we’re a load of guys but we sit down and chat

and enjoy each other’s company so really, it’s all about mental health,” Mr Bennett said.

Emerald U3A President Pat Buoncristiani said the U3A group has continued to run online classes via Zoom during their time away from the hub, including language, philosophy, science and even wine tasting classes.

“As I say about U3A, never underestimate a group of retired people with a bit of time on their hands,” she said.

Ms Buoncristiani said the group were all eager to get back into the space in the New Year.

“Many are considered vulnerable to we will be running hybrid classes, some face-to-face and some via Zoom for those not yet feeling safe enough to jump into the hustle and bustle,” she said.

Secretary of the Hills She Shed, Jill Sullivan said the women are thrilled to be able to get back into their woodwork projects.

The Hills She Shed is a group of local women who meet to create woodworks, sharing the shed and power tools of the Men’s Shed.

“A lot of women have had to go thru homeschooling and this is always been a place we come just to be ourselves, we talk and laugh and chat and support each other through difficult times,” she said.

Karly Lycett King said the Puffing Billy Toy Library was planning to open up in the New Year and looks forward to establishing strong relationships with their new neighbours in the Hills Hub. Cardinia Shire Council Pandemic Response and Recovery Manager Gary Dore said Council looks forward to seeing the Hills Hub busting with community activity once again.

“Cardinia Shire Council thanks community groups for their generosity in forgoing their space in order to prioritise COVID-19 community testing during this time,” he said.

Platypus mauling A dog is believed to have been behind a platypus mauling in Cockatoo, prompting pleas for dog-owners to keep their pets on a leash around waterways.

The Conservation Regulator, which oversees wildlife, forests and public land, launched an investigation after a young platypus was killed in a suspected dog attack.

The juvenile male platypus was found deceased in early December near Amphlett Avenue along the Cockatoo Creek.

An expert wildlife veterinarian assessed the monotreme, whose extensive injuries were consistent with a dog attack, the examination concluded.

The hunt is now on for the dog/s responsible, Conservation Regulator senior investigator Mike Sverns said.

“As an investigation is underway, we’re appealing for anyone with information, particularly around roaming dogs in the area, to come forward,” he said.

“The platypus is a special native species and with the population continuing to decline, we need to do what we can to protect them.

“You can help us to manage and protect wildlife by reporting suspected wildlife crimes, which may include killing or injuring wildlife such as platypus.”

Josh Griffiths said it was “imperative” to keep dogs contained and under control around waterways.

“Platypuses can be extremely vulnerable to predation when crossing between waterbodies such as between a creek and dam,” he said.

In Victoria, wildlife is protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. The maximum penalty for illegally hunting, taking or destroying protected wildlife is $8,261 and/or six-month imprisonment.

Anyone with information about this incident or any other wildlife crimes is urged to make a confidential report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bringing Selby together

By Taylah Eastwell The Selby Community House is bringing the community back together by hosting a free family event on Friday 18 December.

After a tough year, the community house is inviting locals of all ages to come along and enjoy their newly refurbished community house, join in on a vegetarian lunch and check out the community exhibition ‘ArtSpace Selby’.

House Manager at Selby Community House, Anna Reid said ArtSpace Selby was a photography competition made possible by funding from the Yarra Ranges Council to support artists during Covid.

“The community was approached to submit a photo, as a way to connect. We got a snapshot of what people were experiencing during lockdown, and this is a showcase of their photos,” Ms Reid said.

The exhibition will showcase the photographs of 30 entrants. A winner will be presented on the day with a $100 voucher for classes and hire at the community house and a $100 voucher for a local restaurant.

From 12.30 until 1.30pm the committee and staff of Selby Community House will be hosting a free vegetarian Indian lunch in the beautiful garden as a way to bring the community back together.

The house underwent a refurbishment during lockdown.

“It involved painting, removing shelving and old doors, so we thought we would carve fairy doors with the leftover wood,” Ms Reid said.

The fairy doors were painted by members of the community and showcase beautiful messages of peace.

After the luncheon, children are invited to head into the garden to hunt for the new

Bow and arrested Olinda Police arrested a 24-year old male for shooting a bow and arrow in Dandenong Ranges National Park over the weekend.

The man was found shooting at a target off Belview Track in the National Park at 1.30pm on Sunday 13 December.

Sergeant Andrew Heardman said the man’s behaviour was reckless and dangerous and the weapon could of easily caused someone a serious injury or killed someone.

Firearms and weapons are prohibited from the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

The man was released pending summons to be charged with possessing a prohibited weapon and carrying a hunting article in a National Park.

He will face court in early 2021.

Cyclist collides with car A 38-year old cyclist suffered serious injury after colliding with a car over the weekend.

The cyclist was travelling down Mountain Highway about 1.41pm on Sunday 13 December when it collided with a vehicle at the sharp intersection where Hilton Road meets Mountain Highway.

The cyclist caused minor damage to the vehicle, including the mirror.

Senior Constable Harrison of Belgrave Police said cyclists need to take more due care and monitor their speed when travelling down hills.

The cyclist was take to the Alfred Hospital with internal injuries including spinal injuries and a gash in his back where he collided with the car’s mirror

Mt Evelyn collision Lilydale Police are seeking witnesses to a collision that occured at the Clegg Rd and Monbulk Rd intersection in Mount Evelyn.

An accident occured on Thursday 3 December involving a yellow Suzuki Swift and a champagne coloured Nissan Patrol.

Any witnesses with dashcam footage are asked to contact Lilydale Police Station on 9739 2300.

$3m community injection The Community Bank Mt Evelyn & Districts is celebrating giving $3 million back to the community over the past 18 years.

The Bank, which provides grants and sponsorships to community groups and organisations, has become an important feature in Mt Evelyn, Montrose and surrounding areas, ensuring strong and vibrant places for locals to connect to.

Community Bank Chairman, John Stroud said the community bank has been able to reach this momentous milestone thanks to the support of the people, businesses and community organisations who bank with them.

“The Community Bank Bendigo Bank model is based around the premise that the more banking that takes place, the more financial support we can give back to the community. And, as the fifth largest bank in Australia with consumer trust regularly rated the highest of all banks, it’s a great system allround!” Mr Stroud said.

Some of the many groups who have benefited over the years include local pre-schools, numerous sporting and interest clubs, community organisations including Melba, Bridge Builders, Toy Library, CFA, and Anchor. Service clubs have also benefited, including the RSL’s, Rotary Club’s, Men’s Sheds, community houses and events like the Mt Evelyn Street Party and Montrose Carols.

Over the years the bank’s support has extended beyond Mt Evelyn and Montrose to suburbs including Lilydale, Coldstream, Kilsyth, The Basin, Croydon, Monbulk and Yarra Glen.

A novel way to pass time

By Taylah Eastwell Monbulk resident Liz Markham put her lengthy time in lockdown to good use, occupying herself by revisiting her novel Surprise Packet.

Drafted over a three year period from 2015 to 2017, Mrs Markham always knew she would get back into writing one day.

Fast forward to 2020 - Covid-19, a cancelled overseas trip and stay at home orders gave Mrs Markham the perfect opportunity to finish and self-publish her novel.

Mrs Markham said that prior to Covid, she “sat on it for a while” to consider her options after being advised by a literary agent to cull 30,000 words. She was told a publisher was unlikely to accept a manuscript from an unknown author in excess of 90,000 words.

“It didn’t seem reasonable to be asked to cut what amounted to seven or eight chapters or a quarter of the novel, just to reach a particular, arbitrary word limit,” she said.

“I would have lost too much of the story, and I really believed in it. I was disappointed not to move forward at the time, but I’d had such a good response from the ten or so people who had read it, that I always knew I’d go back to it one day.

Mrs Markham made the decision to selfpublish her book.

Covid lockdowns presented the perfect opportunity for Mrs Markham to look over her novel with fresh eyes, re-write some sections and cull 6000 words to “tighten it up a little”.

She sourced the photos for the cover and worked with the design team at Green Hill Publishing on both the cover and interior concepts.

“I researched self-publishing companies because I preferred the idea of having it produced in Australia, that’s how I found Green Hill. I sourced the photos as it was important

to me that the photos matched the story,” she said.

When asked what sparked her interest in writing a novel, Mrs Markham said it is something she has had in mind since she was a teenager.

“I do remember telling my Form Two English Teacher that one day I’d like to write a book. She sent me a message the other day and said she has ordered a book. I posted it to her and said I hope you enjoy it, but no red pen corrections please,” she laughed.

“I worked in age care for four years and used to look around the elderly people in the residential aged care facility and think, everyone has a story.

Mrs Markham said her book is essentially about one woman’s journey from age twenty to forty three. She said it is entirely fictional, with some hints to memories of her own that only those close to her would pick up on.

“It’s about courage, resilience, love and loss, the importance of family (including fur family members) and finding gifts when and where you least expect to find them. It’s a character driven book. You’ll become invested in the characters and moved by their circumstances, and find yourself cheering them on from the sidelines,” she said.

Mrs Markham has been overwhelmed by the response she has received since her book began selling, having to order more copies already.

She has even had a purchaser from Scotland buy her novel.

“She sent me a photo of my book on her kitchen table in Scotland and I just cried. It just meant so much to me that someone in Scotland was reading my book.

School green thumbs win gardening accolades The Victorian Schools Garden Program (VSGP) held their 43rd annual Victorian Schools Garden Awards Ceremony, but their first virtual ceremony on Wednesday 2 December.

The awards saw many schools across the Yarra Ranges acknowledged for their efforts including Badger Creek Primary School, who took out the award in the north eastern - regional, while Wandin Yallock Primary School took out the state award for a primary school with less than 280 pupils.

Little Yarra Steiner School received the

state award and were recognised for having the most engaging student garden for play amongst P-9, P-12 and all secondary schools.

The Patch Primary School was named as the best by the Nursery and Garden Industry of Victoria for the best school garden exhibiting biodiversity for a primary and special school with less than 280 pupils.

Tuck into local hospitality The centres and destinations of Yarra Ranges are seeing their streets filled with life once again as restrictions have been lifted and the community embraces local businesses.

Yarra Ranges Council continues to support businesses to open their doors in preparation for the major tourism periods going into 2021. Temporary outdoor dining spaces on footpaths and in car parks have helped businesses to welcome diners while safely meeting Covid-19 restrictions.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Fiona McAllister, said the pandemic had caused significant upheaval for many businesses in outer-metropolitan Melbourne, who rely on tourism.

“Yarra Ranges is famous for its regional destinations, and our local businesses rely on the significant traffic we receive from local, interstate and international visitors,” Cr McAllister said.

“When Stage 4 restrictions were introduced in August many of our businesses had to close up, reduce staff or change their whole way of operating to stay afloat.

“They’ve done a remarkable job of adapting to an extremely turbulent year and our community doing the right thing to stop the spread of Covid-19 means we’re now looking at a summer where we can welcome visitors back through our towns and our business’ doors.”

Council’s Place Recovery and Business Support Teams have been approaching local hospitality businesses over recent months, helping to prepare them for the return of indoor dining and new outdoor dining rules.

Preserving pedestrian and driveway access, accessibility for prams and people using mobility aids, loading zones, public transport and disability parking are all key priorities for council when assessing temporary outdoor dining spaces, all the while helping businesses to maximise their numbers of seats.

Local business owners spoke of their experience: “It was like the rug was ripped out from right under our feet. We’ve had to let go of employees we’ve had for 20 years. It was heartbreaking. Our staff will be so excited to come back.

More outdoor dining options mean more staff can return,” said a restaurant owner in the Upper Yarra region.

“The last thing anyone wants to see is businesses unable to trade or return. We’ve invested so much now and have come too far to give

up. Even if car park dining isn’t suitable for my business, it might be just what saves the business next door or down the road,” said a cafe owner in Belgrave.

“At first, we weren’t sure about the idea of concrete bollards as they looked like a construction site and we were worried about losing a couple of parking spaces but with the government’s grant and a little creativity, we have a space that our customers love and now we want to keep the space permanently,” said a Kilsyth cafe owner.

Cr McAllister said the team had already received enthusiastic feedback about new outdoor dining spaces where concrete barriers have been used to turn parking spaces into temporary outdoor dining parklets.

“Where it is safe and practical, Council has been providing vehicle barriers and screening to create new outdoor dining spaces,” she said.

“Not every business has the room to out tables and chairs out the front, which means clever innovation is sometimes required. We’re looking at every case on its merits and considering the needs of businesses and the community when looking at new outdoor dining areas.

“We’ve already heard from businesses who were hesitant about having barriers out in car parks, or how the change might look for them, but they’ve since given us positive feedback, and experienced an increase in customers since reopening.

“We’re so proud of our hardworking cafés, restaurants, wineries and breweries across Yarra Ranges, who have been resilient and have made significant changes to meet the challenges this year has put on them. These changes have absolutely contributed to our region and the State’s successes this year.

“I strongly encourage anyone - community members and visitors alike - to explore the Yarra Ranges and throw their support behind our local businesses.”

A breathtaking Christmas display in a Montrose family’s front garden is just the beginning of ways in which the compassionate family are lighting up the hearts of their local community.

Now in its third year, the Brasher family’s festive extravaganza lights up Montrose each year in memory of their son Corey, who passed away from an asthma attack on January 15 2018.

While dealing with their own heartbreak, Debbie Brasher and her family decided to begin the Christmas displays as a way to “make people smile”.

“It’s fun. I don’t do it for the thankyou, I prefer the smiles and the people that come and it makes their night,” Mrs Brasher said.

“We love talking to people. It’s good to get your emotions out, I have a good cry and have some favourites that come every year,” she said.

Titled ‘Lights on for Corey’, visitors to the free display have the option of purchasing a bell for their Christmas tree, with a poem that Mrs Brasher has created written on the back.

“This year it says, a bell to chime upon your tree, jingle it and think of me, in memory of Corey,” she said.

“I get heaps of people sending me pictures of them hanging their baubles on their tree and saying Corey is in our house this year.”

Mrs Brasher said the family raised $4,000 from visitors last year. The proceeds were recently used to create 85 care packages and deliver 20 bouquets of flowers to care workers and community members in need of a pickme-up during Covid lockdowns.

The care packages were delivered to residents of Montrose’s MiCare Retirement Village, equipped with fruit, handkerchiefs, toiletries, handcream, meal vouchers, homemade slices, chocolates, jigsaw puzzles and a scarf for each resident.

Mrs Brasher said she chose to give to the village as she missed seeing the residents out on their daily walks past her home while they were locked down.

“I see them walking around, they always walk up past our house and say hello and in Covid you didn’t see them, they were sort of locked up. It’s not fair, they couldn’t have their kids or visitors,” she said.

“When he (Premier Daniel Andrews) said

the 5km rule was coming in two days I ran around like a crazy woman getting everyone a scarf and it’s so cute because I saw a lady walking down the street the other day and you could see her little scarf wrapped around her.”

Known to many as “Mrs Christmas”, Mrs Brasher’s generosity did not stop there.

“We had some care packages left over so I put the rest on Facebook and asked for nominations. People were nominating someone they thought deserved one,” she explained.

“I had so many coming to me I felt sorry for people and began making bouquets,” she said.

With help from the Little Flower Shoppe in Montrose, Mrs Brasher used the remainder of the funds to purchase 20 bouquets and have them delivered to local mums and grandmothers to brighten their days.

While the family haven’t yet decided where this year’s funds will go, the money raised will without a doubt be used to benefit someone deserving in their local community.

Mrs Brasher has some incredible stories about locals enjoying her Christmas display, but fondly remembers one little girl who visited her in her first year of having the lights up.

“A gorgeous girl handed me a jar of her savings. She had one jar of money to keep, one to spend and one to give to a charity – and she gave it to me on the first year. I balled my eyes out it was so cute,” she said.

It’s the enjoyment of locals that sees Mrs Brasher continue offering the display, which she has been setting up since October 8 with the help of her family.

“The best thing is getting the kids in and seeing their smiles,” she said.

“I don’t want a lot of people there, I just want the few that are going to enjoy it. Especially after Covid we definitely need a bit of cheering up, so we hope it does that,” she said.

Santa visits the 858 Mt Dandenong Rd home from 8pm until 10pm each Saturday, where Covid friendly photographs can be taken for a gold coin donation.

There is also a Santa letterbox at the property where children who have been good this year can post their letters to the big man in red.

Rumour has it that Santa always replies to letters from this mailbox as it drops straight down into the North Pole!

The display can be visited from 8pm until 10pm every night and remains lit up until late on Fridays and Saturdays.

Help feed Aussies Coles supermarkets across Victoria have kicked off a national Christmas appeal this month to help feed locals doing it tough as national food relief organisation, SecondBite, braces for increased demand in the holiday season.

New research released by SecondBite shows more than three in four of its food charities expect Christmas will be more difficult for people they support in the community, with 72 per cent of agencies, including Koha Community Cafe and Milgrove Baptist Church in Big Pats Creek, LinC Yarra Valley in Glenroy and Church of Christ Montose in Montrose are reporting an increase in demand for food relief since Covid-19 began.

Until Christmas Eve, customers can show their support for those hit hard by Covid-19 by purchasing a $2 donation card or donating an amount of their choice at Coles Lilydale, Big Pats Creek, Gilderoy and Montrose.

The appeal comes as SecondBite released its 2020 social impact report, which found that 88 per cent of community food charities reported a moderate or major impact of Covid-19 on their food relief programs, with lockdown, unemployment and slow return to business resulting in an increased need for food by the most at risk and disadvantaged communities.

Coles Regional Manager Christopher Anderson said it was important to remember those in the community who will be doing it tough as Lilydale and Yarra Valley customers start preparing for Christmas.

“Local charities including the Koha Community Cafe, Milgrove Baptist Church, LinC Yarra Valley and Church of Christ Montrose have seen increased demand for food relief since the Covid-19 pandemic began, so it has never been a more important time to dig deep and help provide meals to people who might otherwise go without,” he said.

“By buying a $2 donation card at Coles between now and Christmas Eve, our Lilydale and Yarra Valley customers can be assured

This year’s worst list hardly needs a preamble, as 2020 is almost universally considered one of the worst years anyone can remember.

The cinema industry took a hard, possibly terminal hit this year: film production halted and cinemas closed in the wake of the pandemic, and most big releases were either dumped on streaming services or postponed far into 2021 (the rescheduling of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune to October next year was particularly painful).

We lost some cinema greats this year, including legendary actors Max von Sydow, Ian Holm, Diana Rigg and Kirk Douglas, iconic composer Ennio Morricone and Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman.

Robert Pattinson tested positive for coronavirus, stalling production on Matt Reeves’ The Batman just three days after it resumed in September. Disney had the gall to charge a hefty fee for the live-action Mulan on top of their monthly streaming subscription.

And a new Borat movie came out: that says it all, right there.

Every year has its share of bad films, but this wretched year’s bad releases stand out either for their contemptible characters or repugnant morals.

Here are my picks for the ten worst films of 2020.

10. The Night Clerk. Features an excellent central performance from Ty Sheridan, but has toothless tension, thinly-written characters and a very stereotypical portrayal of autism.

9. Artemis Fowl. A contrived, inept fantasy thriller and an atrocious adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s source novel.

8. Fatal Affair. A well-acted but poorlypaced psychological thriller that takes far too long to get going, and thus fails to generate an ongoing sense of threat.

7. Dolittle. A tedious historical fantasy lacking in suspense but crammed with forced reference-based humour.

6. Hubie Halloween. This painful comedy is a prime example of cognitive dissonance: you cannot present an anti-bullying message while constantly abusing your main character and openly inviting audiences to laugh at him.

5. Midway. Crashes and burns after the enthralling first act, with a slack middle, hard-to-follow battle sequences and plotpoints given heavy focus but little dramatic importance.

4. Coffee and Kareem. A buddy cop crime comedy with crude, grating (and even homophobic) humour and an irredeemably mean main character.

3. The Last Days of American Crime. A perfect encapsulation of 2020: drawn-out and miserable.

2. The Wrong Missy. An apocalyptically bad comedy with less than ten decent gags and a relentlessly annoying title character, this film also makes light of sexual assault, which is unacceptable.

1. 365 Days. A romantic thriller that is neither thrilling nor romantic, but repulsive: the film has wooden leads and slow, empty pacing, and the plot glamourises abduction, sexual abuse and emotional manipulation.

Tough times rewarded

By Taylah Eastwell 2020 was the year of panic buying, store limits and crowds busting through the door at opening time, reaching for the toilet paper before it even had the time to hit the shelf.

But if the Covid-19 supermarket chaos taught us one thing, it was how much we value and appreciate our essential supermarket workers.

Ferntree Gully Woolworths Store Manager Melissa Micallef recently had her hard work and leadership ability recognised on a national level, taking out the title of Store Manager of the Year at Woolworth’s Team Member of the Year Awards.

Ms Micallef said it took her by surprise to have been nominated by her team.

“It’s so humbling to receive this recognition, but in all honesty, I could not have done it without the team. We really operate as one and make it a priority to look after one another and our customers,” she said.

Ms Micallef has worked for Woolworths for 26 years and has managed the Ferntree Gully store for three.

“One of the team members who nominated me was an 18 year old boy, so I’ve obviously had an impact on him at some point and I think that itself is pretty amazing,” she said.

The team at Ferntree Gully Woolworths described their manager as a giant among leaders, who worked tirelessly to calm customers and team members during the tough times this year.

When asked how she manages her team of

over 190 employees, Ms Micallef said it is her people skills and absolute love for her job that sees her through.

“I think it’s my people skills. I love getting to know people and what makes them tick, and the only way to do that is by getting to know the individual.

“I think it’s amazing because, generally when you’re an adult you’re working with people of similar age or similar interests, but we work with people who are 15 and we work with people who are 70. I never imagined I would be doing this when I was in high school but I love it and I can’t even imagine doing anything else,” she said.

Ms Micallef said 2020 was a challenging year, but her team worked together to get through the tough times during the pandemic and also the disruptions with their recent store refurbishment.

Having won a $10,000 travel voucher at the awards, Ms Micallef now has the luxury of deciding where in the world she wants to travel for her next overseas adventure.

Ms Micallef was up against managers from each state of Australia, with the decision made based on overall store performance and voice of the team results.

Woolworths Victoria General Manager Andrew Hall said Ms Micallef is a trusted mentor and inspiration to many team members.

“Our goal is to bring a little good to everyone, every day and Melissa has lived that purpose over the last 20 years and made a lasting and positive impact at Woolworths,” Mr Hall said.

Riding high

By Jed Lanyon Seville Pony Club’s Rachael Edwards has taken out the highest honour for a coach after being named as Coach of the Year by Pony Club Victoria and by Pony Club Australia.

Ms Edwards, who has been involved in the sport for over 30 years, said her mind was blown after learning she would be recognised for her efforts at a state level before going on to take out the award on a national scale.

Seville Pony Club made the nomination for Ms Edwards’ dedication to the club and to surrounding clubs in the northern metropolitan zone.

“I don’t think it has sunk in yet, to be honest. I’m just a normal person who lives in Seville and goes about my daily jobs. I still don’t think it has actually hit me yet,” Ms Edwards said.

“I think the highlight of it was, because people couldn’t see you in person to congratulate you, I’ve actually received so many phone calls, messages and social media messages ...

People who I hadn’t heard from in ages. I think connecting again to some people who I had lost contact with was overwhelming.”

“These awards really highlighted what an impact as a coach you have on people’s lives and that’s something I’ve probably taken for granted until I got all these messages ... I thought wow, I just go about my business and go out and teach and keep people safe.”

Ms Edwards has taken an Australian team to coach in China and has just been appointed the sub-junior dressage coach of Pony Club Victoria to compete at nationals next year. She shared the secret for what makes someone a coach of the year.

“I think it’s to just keep doing what you love. I have an absolute passion and a desire to see riders succeed with their horses and when that’s so deep inside you to want to see those riders and horses develop together it just makes you hungry for more success.

Picture: JED LANYON “It’s very emotional to watch these partnerships grow in such an amazing manner. Pony Club is such a fantastic association. What it teaches riders and the relationship between the horse and riders is amazing.

Ms Edwards said it’s not only about helping the riders and their horses but the parents too.

“Quite often we have families that have never had anything to do with horses at all and they’re coming to our pony club to get some guidance, so we’re educating the parents as well as the riders.

Ms Edwards was responsible for running online tutorials and competitions for her club and others in the area while members were locked out of their clubs facilities during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

“It was a different way of educating them.

Quite often we always have that consistent contact. But because of Covid there were months that we actually didn’t see them.

“We were very keen in making sure the lines of communication were still open ... We had to step up really quickly in our technology skills in order to support the riders in the pony club.”

But even now club activities have resumed in Seville, Ms Edwards said there are still some things for riders to be wary of when jumping back on the horse.

“Horses react to grass. So when spring comes it’s a bit like letting a child loose in a lolly shop. The sugars in the grass can actually make a horse a little bit more energetic.

“If you haven’t had a rider on a horse for a while and then you’re putting them on an energetic horse, it’s a recipe for disaster.”

District commissioner of Seville Pony Club Sami Bell had glowing praise for the Coach of the Year.

“I think what makes her Coach of the Year is that she has such a bubbly outgoing personal-

ity, but also that booming voice as she interacts with the kids. She coaches them but she seems to be able to connect with them as well as they always have a really good and enjoyable lesson,“ Ms Bell said.

“It’s the way she teaches them is why I find her amazing and my daughter just loves her.

She puts herself out there to help everybody and doesn’t expect anything in return.

“Anything she takes on, she takes it personally and she genuinely wants to help and always goes above and beyond, it’s a massive thing to have at the club.

“That’s why the pony club wanted to have her recognised, we wanted her to know we recognise how special she is as well.”

By Jed Lanyon Healesville’s Grand Hotel has fitted out the pub’s exterior with several posters in a bid to lift community spirit.

Pedestrians and drivers passing the iconic hotel can easily spot the signage, which has been created by locals to share messages of support for those doing it tough.

Healesville resident and pub-goer Kersten Gentle said the idea came from her daughter Nikita, who pitched the idea to the business owners of the hotel.

“We recognised how community minded Lisa and Tom are and my daughter said, ‘why don’t we do some posters to brighten up the place as people are walking’ and the response from people has been amazing,” Ms Gentle said.

“This town has gone through a lot in the past and I know that if the community comes together now, we will make sure that everyone gets through this. And that’s what these posters are about; making sure that everyone comes through the other end of this pandemic.”

Business owner Lisa McKay-Campbell invites locals to design their own A2 posters to display across the pub as they enlist the services of Breen Printing to create their positive posters. Relatives of Ms McKay-Campbell, who were in Mallacoota at the time of the recent bushfires were involved in a similar feat paying respects to the nation’s firefighters.

The idea initially started as a home-schooling art class activity but is now open for people of all ages with time to spare in isolation.

“One of the biggest problems with the pandemic is the effect on people’s mental health, so if these posters can put a smile on someone’s face then the Grand is doing a good job ...

To me this is the perfect canvas for our town,” Ms Gentle said.

The Grand Hotel is now operating a drivethrough takeaway meal service for locals looking for a restaurant quality meal without having to leave the comfort of their car.

dinarily done ... It’s the only thing we can really do,” Ms McKay-Campbell said.

“You drive through the bottle shop and they pass it to you through the car window. You can literally come through in your pyjamas.”

As part of their takeaway menu, the hotel has also started cooking regular Sunday roasts for customers.

On Sunday 6 December a new book on the history of Mooroolbark was officially launched at the Hookey Park Rotunda by Croydon MP David Hodgett.

The book has been sponsored by Geoff Earney, director of Methven – the Professionals Real Estate, and written by local historian Anthony McAleer OAM, with a foreword by Christine Fyffe, the former Speaker of the Victorian Parliament and former Mooroolbark resident.

The book, ‘From Farms to Suburbia – The Development of Mooroolbark’, details the history of Mooroolbark from the 1840s onwards.

“Mooroolbark has always been prized territory,“ Anthony McAleer stated.

“It is part of the sacred home land of the Wurundjeri people, it was valued by the original European settlers for its abundant grazing land, it was hailed for decades as prime pastures for dairying and its subdivisions have made cherished homes for thousands of suburbanites. JobTrainer fills skills gap It goes without saying that this year has been filled with challenges and disruption across the adult education sector.

As we say goodbye to 2020, and look ahead to 2021, we know that there is an important role vocational education can play to support people in the community to retrain, upskill and gain qualifications to ultimately find employment in a new role.

The JobTrainer initiative works to provide people who are under the age of 25, or currently unemployed, the opportunity to gain qualifications in these recognised skill shortage areas at a heavily subsidised rate.

With the cost of vocational education commonly identified as a barrier for people who are wanting to study, particularly for those with existing qualifications, this opportunity will open doors for many.

Covid Carnage Now that covid restrictions have eased, we can peer through the clearing dust and survey the carnage inflicted on our local shopping strips.

For good reason, indeed, as a recent survey indicates (“Belgrave Shopping Fears”, Mail, 1/12/20) that a wide variety of local shops is the primary concern of Belgrave and Tecoma residents.

We can grimly note that too many cafes and other services have closed for good. Supermarkets want the world, it seems, and had already seen the closure of all our greengrocers and health food stores. Covid herded us further into their waiting arms. And we’re all ordering more online nowadays, but what’s the social cost of this?

The Big Boys can always ride out such cri-

ses and benefit from decreased competition when normality resumes. Is this what’s called a free and a fair market?

It is concerning to note that Tecoma McDonald’s has recently cut sponsorship deals with a number of cash-strapped local sporting clubs, which consequently display its billboards and brandish its sponsor’s logo. So much for sporting clubs fostering healthy lifestyles.

No matter how many Australian flags McDonald’s flies, it is clearly not the small, local business that defines our Hills environment and which is so dearly valued. The solution is clear: Our dollar is our vote!

Enlightening column Thank you Ranges Trader Mail for publishing

the excellent and informative opinion piece by Leah Folloni, ‘Giving hope to the animals the dairy industry rejects’ (8 December).

As Ms Folloni rightly points out, most people are unaware of what dairy entails for the cow and calf. I was one of these ignorant people for more than three decades. And then I discovered the enormous cruelty inherent in this industry and gladly eliminated all dairy products from my diet.

But, until I read this piece, I was unaware of the Farm Transparency Project. I have just taken a look at the site and I urge other readers to do so and, thus, inform themselves about the various animal industries that they support.

I would love to see more articles by Leah Folloni published in the Trader Mail.

A decade in Parliament

By Mitchell Clarke One of the most recognised MPs in the region has reached a political milestone.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin officially celebrated his 10th anniversary in government on Friday 27 November, and the long-standing politician has no plans to step away just yet.

The Liberal MP was first elected to Parliament in 2010, knocking off former Labor MP Tammy Lobato. He won again in 2014 and 2018, but said the most recent election was the most difficult, after he only just beat Labor candidate Michael Galea.

“It’s been an absolute privilege,” Mr Battin told the Star Mail, reflecting on the past decade.

“I came in with the vision that I would do a term and go to the next election and see what happened. I never got ahead of myself. To win once was great, to win twice was fantastic and to win again in such a tight race was special.

“I guess this (anniversary) is an opportunity to sit back and reflect on some of the great things that have happened in our community - big and small.”

Among the highlights for Mr Battin - the Officer Specialist School and Officer Secondary College builds, the rebuild at Emerald Primary School, and more recently, works beginning on the new Emerald SES station and the new health and wellbeing centre at Berwick College.

A former police officer, he originally joined politics to be afforded the chance to make some changes, particularly around youth crime.

“I still haven’t achieved everything I wanted to but I’ve got a genuine opportunity to make those changes,” he said.

“I would love to see some changes in youth justice where we have a focus on the prevention model, working with young people as they

With two years to go in this term, Mr Battin has ruled out the possibility of being directly involved in a leadership spill.

“I definitely will not be putting my hand up for opposition leader during this term,” he said.

“I think leadership chooses you as much as you choose it. Never say never, but it’s certainly not in my discussions at the moment.”

But he has confirmed he’ll run in the next election, and will be hoping it’ll be a fourth time lucky.

“If the party choose me again and the community want me, I’ll absolutely stay. The best thing about this job for me is helping someone with something small. It’s not a public thing, not a front page, but when you know you’ve

Griffins leap to fourth

By Richard Millott A glorious Saturday afternoon greeted the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association, as a pivotal Round Five saw some key results provide a shakeup of the ladder prior to the Christmas break.

Knox Gardens put in a strong performance with the ball to claim the points over Knoxfield in a ten-wicket win at Carrington Park.

The Knights batted first however was soon one-way traffic as the Falcons claimed 5/7 to have the hosts reeling at 5/27.

Drew Withers lead the charge with 3/18 from his eight overs, with Knoxfield reaching 112 by innings’ end.

In reply, the Falcons openers remained resolute to the task, with Pete Dunlop (65*) and Joe Morsello (43*) both walking off to bank the six points for the visitors.

Knox Gardens now sit ninth with healthy percentage and will look to build on that when hosting Eildon Park, whilst the Knights slip from fifth to eighth ahead of their Round Six match against Johnson Park.

Ferntree Gully Footballers were another big mover, leaping into the Top Four from seventh place after a big win over Monbulk.

The Griffins chose to bat first and kept the scoreboard busy ticking over, with Tharanga Lakshita (33) and Cohen McElroy (71) keeping the Hawk bowlers at bay.

Liam Hunt arrived in the later stages, his cameo of 48 off 38 balls helping to propel the hosts to 6/239.

Aaron Bermingham (41) gave the visitors plenty to cheer early as the top order was up to task, with Jason Fraser (49) and Brendan Hooker (34) hitting the scoreboard at 5/148.

Monbulk dropped to seventh however will aim to bounce back against Upper Ferntree Gully.

In the Top of the Table clash, Lysterfield prevailed over The Basin at Lakesfield Reserve.

The Bears reply was measured and paced, with scores from Tom Edwards (36) and Jake Sherriff (41) the highlights. However, Tim Chivers had other plans, claiming 4/17 to skittle the visitors for 162.

The Beavers will look to continue their unbeaten start against Belgrave next week, whilst The Basin will play Ferntree Gully.

Upper Ferntree Gully came agonisingly close to opening the account in a close match against Upwey-Tecoma.

The Tigers took to the crease first, however the Kings bowlers were able to dismiss through the top order without major contribution.

Jay Collee finished 30 not out as the Tigers’ leading scorer to post 9/123.

In reply, the Kings started well at 0/35 before a Cameron Wheeler spell flipped the script.

The Tigers claimed4 /1 all taken by Wheeler.

Corey Williams (38*) held firm at the crease, helping to push the Kings to within touching distance of first points.

Seven runs were needed from the final over, however a runout and Wheeler’s fifth wicket saw the Kings fall short by four runs at 9/119.

Upwey-Tecoma now sit second outright on the ladder ahead of their match against FTG Footballers, whilst Upper Ferntree Gully will look to open the account next week up at Monbulk.

Ferntree Gully played host to Belgrave at Wally Tew, with the Blues going on to claim the points by nine wickets.

The Magpies elected to bat first with starts from the top order, with Chad Hitchcock (33) leading the way towards 144.

With the ball, Josh Henry claimed 3/21 for the Blues to lead the attack.

In response, Henry again featured strongly with the willow, ending the day 74 not out alongside Jayden Bradbury (48) to hit 1/145 in the 31st over.

Ferntree Gully are within striking distance in sixth place and will look to improve with a win over The Basin, whilst Belgrave have an assignment next week against Lysterfield to finish the year.

Batting first, the Panthers recovered from an early wicket with Jake Pollard (38) the score of the top order, whilst Jake Evans (32*) helped to propel the back end of the innings.

For the Sharks, Udara Ranasingha was the pick with his 3/28 helping to keep the Panthers to 8/153.

The Sharks top order started well before a flurry of wickets saw them fall to 3/39. The Devinish Show continued, with Andrew (45) and Steve (32*) helping apply scoreboard pressure with a supply of runs.

The Panthers turned to Jarrod Hicks (3/27) to take charge, however the Sharks brought up the runs required with four balls remaining – ending the day on 7/156.

Johnson Park will host Knoxfield in a midtable clash, whilst Eildon Park will look to end 2020 on a positive note with an away trip to Knox Gardens.

In Decoite Shield, Olinda’s winning ways continued, registering their third win on the trot against Rowville.

Sending the visitors in was the right call as the Blood bowlers ran riot through the top order, with Taf Kamungozi (3/24) and Josh Langer (3/15) leading the way.

Any hope of relief from the Hawks wasn’t forthcoming, with Jonty Scott (3/16) joining the party to dismiss the visitors for 88 within 29 overs. The Hawks toiled hard to try to defend the target, with wickets falling at regular intervals.

However, Tim Scott (36*) held his nerve to guide the hosts home, ending on 4/89. Olinda

now sit a game clear in 3rd place ahead of Rowville in fourth, with next week’s match a return fixture between the duo at Seebeck Oval.

Mountain Gate are still searching for the opening win after being on the wrong side of the result again in a close match, this time against South Belgrave.

The Gators elected to bat first, with a number of starts over the top order before Ty Pugliese hit 48 to push the hosts to 6/148 at the close.

In reply, Darren Ray once again lead South from the top – his 63 not out pivotal and, combining with Jordan McDermott (35), helped the visitors to 5/149 with 23 balls in hand.

The second placed South host Knox Gardens next week, whilst the Gators will travel to Talaskia to take on St Johns Tecoma.

St Johns Tecoma’s winning streak continues to lead Decoite Shield standings, albeit a close result against Knox Gardens showed plenty of talents on both sides.

Alex Ferguson shone with the bat, notching up an unbeaten 100 in the final over as the highlight of the innings to help the Saints to 5/199 from the 40 overs.

Not to be outdone, the Falcons top ordered started well, with Jay Wagner (33) and Hayden Morrison (59) pushing the score towards 3/152.

A renewed charge with the ball – lead by Beau Newman (3/42) – saw the Saints apply enough of the brakes to restrict the Falcons, who reached 9/189 at the days end.

The Saints will look to continue their streak against Mountain Gate at home next week, whilst for the Falcons they will look to jump into the Top Four with a win against South Belgrave.

Monbulk bowlers find it tough in a close encounter

By Eric Markham Monbulk One journeyed to Croydon on Saturday to play on their new grass green in what turned out to be a close encounter.

Richard Cookson’s rink started slowly and were five shots behind after two ends. They then won a few ends but were kept to low scores and by the 12 th end trailed by seven shots. They then won six of the next nine ends to take the points by one shot, 17 to 16.

Geoff Peterson’s rink also found themselves behind early and were six shots down after eight ends.

They then took control of the match winning nine of the next eleven ends to lead by five shots with two ends to play. They dropped one shot on the 20 th end and looked home.

However, the opposition had other ideas and moved the jack back to grab four shots which meant the match ended in a tie, 18 shots all.

got them back in the game and they won 11 of the next 15 ends to win 19 to 15.

Brian Smith’s rink had a close tussle early and were level after nine ends and only two shots separated the teams with seven ends to play. However, they dropped 14 shots in the next six ends to go down 27 to 14. This meant Monbulk lost the overall 75 to 68.

Monbulk Two played Donvale at home but proved no match for their opposition.

Ray Pike’s rink dropped two multiples in the first three ends and did not recover going down 30 to 14.

Case Broekhoff’s rink could not get any momentum winning only two of the first 11 ends to trail by 13 shots.

They improved in the second half of the game but could not make up the margin losing 22 to 10.

Norma Clerke’s rink also allowed their opponents to take the lead and after 13 ends they were nine shots behind. They then came with a rush getting within four shots but eventually went down 23 to 17.

Eric Furby’s rink had the closest game

of the day and only one shot separated the teams with two ends to play.

However, Donvale won the last two ends to win 17 to 13. Monbulk went down on the overall 92 to 53.

Monbulk Three played at home to Bennettswood and went down 27 to 18.

Alan Brooke’s rink was able to come back from a slow start to win the match 12 to 10.

However, Doug Elliot’s rink was behind for most of the match eventually losing 17 to 6.

Tuesday Pennant saw Monbulk One take on Ferntree Gully at home.

Peter Koomen’s rink began brilliantly and after five ends led by 13 shots. They then went to sleep to lose the next 10 ends to find themselves five shots behind. They won four of the next six ends but could not make up the margin losing 22 to 17.

Richard Cookson’s rink dominated their opposition winning 14 ends and with the skip in control won 24 to 8.

Eric Markham’s rink were three shots down after nine ends but then the wheels fell off and they went down 27 to 10. Monbulk

lost the match 57 to 51.

Monbulk Two played at Vermont South and had a good win.

Graeme Goller’s won 14 ends which included a number of multiples to win 27 to 10.

Alan Hamilton’s rink led the right through the game to win 19 to 13.

Eric Furby’s rink allowed the opposition the lead early in the match and were not able to make up the ground required losing 19 to 10. Monbulk won the overall 56 to 42.

Monbulk Three found the grass green very challenging at Mulgrave losing 81 to 31.

Mike Harris’ rink started well winning the first two ends, but that was it as they went down 30 to 7.
