Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says the greatest compliment he has ever received was overhearing one parent tell another “If you want your child to be truly happy, then send them to a Catholic school”.

This year over 210,000 students - close to one in four Victorian school children - will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide.

And above the mere numbers, academic results and a steady stream of independent research

underlines the difference a Catholic education makes.

Catholic schools across Melbourne excel in literacy and numeracy - the crucial building blocks of learning - returning results well above the state average in NAPLAN tests.

The 2017 VCE median study score - the best indicator of the typical level of VCE achievement in a school - show stronger outcomes for Melbourne Catholic schools, with results that now stand some 10 per cent higher than the equivalent results for Victorian government schools. Using the same measure, the proportion of high achievers in Melbourne Catholic schools is more than three times larger than the equivalent figure for government schools.

University of Melbourne research on the “value add” performance of non-government education has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the career defining end of a student’s school journey.

A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary school students will go on to university.

And a Curtin University study shows how a Catholic education pays real-world dividends, with Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoying a wage premium of more than 10 per cent.

At the same time, the Curtin University research shows Catholic school graduates enjoy greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

A major part of this academic and personal success comes from the fact that when Catholic teachers walk into class they see individual students. Teaching and learning programs are based around diversity and dignity and designed to engage students at a social and emotional level.

“The thing I like about working in the Catholic school environment is that we genuinely put the student’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do,” Liam Buckley, a teacher St John’s Regional College, Dandenong, explains. “School for our students is not just about the learning of content, but the development of the person as a whole.”

Federation of Catholic Regional College THE Federation of Catholic Regional Colleges (CRC) is a collaboration of five Catholic coeducational secondary colleges, located in the rapidly expanding North Western suburbs of Melbourne. Each College within the Federation is partially autonomous with its own administrative structures. As a complex, the federation is governed by the Catholic Regional Colleges Board and its students are identified in the community by a single uniform and College crest.

The name of each college is a combination of its campus location prefixed with â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Catholic Regional Collegesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The first of the colleges to open was the St Albans campus in 1978, followed closely by the opening of a second campus in Melton West two years later. In 1982, a senior college in Sydenham was opened to cater for the senior secondary education of students from the Melton and St Albans campuses. In the same year an additional Years 7-10 college opened in North Keilor. As of 2007, the latest addition to the CRC Federation is a college in Caroline Springs.

The benefits of P-12 & K-12 Colleges THE development of P-12 schools within Victoria has been steady across the three education sectors over the past twenty years.

There are at least 192 schools that provide both primary and secondary education. This comprises 51 government schools, 12 Catholic schools, and 129 independent schools. Some of these schools are also pre-school linked, enabling a K-12 model.

As well, there in growing interest in the potential of P-12 schooling and K-12 models to provide a continuous, connected and personalised learning experience for children and young people.

Further, many schools that are not P-12 schools per se have worked in clusters and networks to blend primary and secondary school cultures and types of teaching and learning. A mix of three or four feeder primary schools and one or two secondary schools is at the core of 21st century learning communities.

There is also a long and rich history of teachers from primary and secondary schools working in teams to improve middle years learning and transitions from primary to secondary schools.

KEY QUESTIONS Yet more needs to be known about three key questions: 1. What really is P-12 schooling (as distinct from the co-location of a primary and secondary school on the one site)?

2. What is the potential of P-12 schooling to significantly improve learning outcomes for students?

3. What is the relevance of P-12 schooling for all schools?

The Country Education Project and a group of P-12 school principals thus decided that the time was right for research into current and potential practice with P-12 schooling. A research project was developed, which was funded by the then Department of Education and Training. Over fifty Victorian P-12 schools were surveyed as part of the research project.

KEY FINDINGS The main findings of the P-12 education research project are: â&#x20AC;˘

A more unified P-12 approach to teaching, learning, and curricula and a common educational language are needed, but it will take a significant policy and operational shift and system leadership to create a unified P-12 pedagogy, culture and curriculum

â&#x20AC;˘

The research literature and the potential to be found in existing P-12 schools suggest that this educational policy and operational shift could significantly improve learning outcomes for all students and reduce the achievement gap.

A KEY DISTINCTION The project made a distinction between a P-12 school and P-12 schooling or ‘P-12ness’. A P-12 school is any educational institution governed by a single body, managed by a central administration, and operating under the same name that offers schooling for students from Prep (at least) until the end of year 12. The Country Education Project P-12 research report found: “The data collected about the curriculum offered in P-12 schools suggests that whilst the number of P-12 schools is increasing, the development of a P-12 schooling approach within such schools has not always been the priority.

Many P-12 schools have been established for administrative or community reasons, not curricula, pedagogical or teaching and learning reasons”.

Many of these P-12 schools went on to develop extraordinary innovations in P-12 schooling and

to develop some degree of curriculum alignment, providing deep insights for all schools.

Nonetheless, P-12 schooling is more radical than simply establishing a P-12 school on the one site (as important as this is and notwithstanding the creative work in these schools).

It refers to a systemic educational approach that incorporates lifelong learning, a shared pedagogy and curriculum alignment.

P-12 schooling is not dependent on a P-12 school per se. It may exist in communities where there is no P-12 school if the schools in that community or cluster integrate their practices and work toward the development of a shared pedagogy and seamless curriculum. Thus, P-12 schooling is relevant to all schools.

This issue is pivotal for efforts to improve outcomes. Primary and secondary schools, in isolation from each other, cannot improve student learning outcomes to a significant extent.

Should phones be banned from Victorian Schools?

EXPERTS on cyberbullying, youth wellbeing, and digital learning question the efficacy of the extensive restrictions on mobile phone use proposed for Victorian schools next year.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AMANDA THIRD, WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY Associate Professor Amanda Third of Western Sydney University is the Principal Research Fellow of Digital Social and Cultural Research in the Institute for Culture and Society. She was consulted during the NSW review of mobile use in schools. In her view, there is little evidence to support a blanket ban on mobile use in schools, and the focus should instead be on responsible use.

“There’s a plausible case that could be made for restricting the use of mobile phones in primary school. But I am concerned that the evidence base is not there to show that secondary students will benefit from an outright ban,” said Associate Professor Third. “And I’m concerned that the ways these issues are reported only further stigmatise young people’s technology practices and fuels parental fears.“ “In the meantime, we are overlooking the potential social and educational benefits of digital communication. We need much more nuance and sensitivity to diversity in our policy making and mainstream debate.”

“The jury is out on whether banning mobile phones in schools will reduce cyberbullying.

Indeed, recent evidence suggests that banning mobile phone use in schools can increase levels of violence among school communities.”

“We need balanced approaches that support children and young people to mitigate the risks of harm while also creating the contexts in which they can access the enormous benefits of digital technologies. And we need to support teachers to better manage and make the best use of technologies in the classroom.”

“Moreover, research shows that those young people who are most vulnerable online tend to be those who are most vulnerable offline, and we need to urgently focus attention on how to best support them.”

PROFESSOR MARILYN CAMPBELL, QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Professor Marilyn Campbell is a leading expert on cyberbullying based at the Queensland University of Technology. She says there is no evidence to suggest mobile bans will prevent cyberbullying.

“There is no research evidence to support the assertions made by the Victorian government that mobile phones bans will reduce distraction and improve learning outcomes for school students and absolutely no evidence these will reduce cyberbullying,” said Professor Campbell.

“Research from educators says mobile devices can enhance learning and that appropriate use of technology should be taught. The assertion that by banning mobile phones ‘we can stop cyberbullying at the school gate’ also goes against the evidence. In a study which compared schools which banned mobiles and those who didn’t, there was no difference in cyberbullying after six months.“ “This makes sense as hardly any students are only cyberbullied, they are also bullied face-toface (usually at school) either physically, verbally or socially as well as being cyberbullied. Therefore it makes no sense that such as ban will prevent students bullying others at school and continue out-of-school bullying on mobiles as they currently do now.”

“The technology is the mechanism, not the behaviour. Bullying will still occur, in all its forms, physical, verbal, social and cyber. In addition, the surveillance, policing and punishing of infractions could take significant time, money and effort.“ ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MATT BOWER, MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY Associate Professor Matt Bower of Macquarie University is an expert on the use of technology

for learning. He notes that the bans make important exemptions for educational purposes.

However, in his view, a ban is still far from ideal, and it would be better to focus on teaching children responsible use of their phones.

“A crucial part of the Victorian mobile phone policy is that the teacher has discretion to allow the use of mobile phones for targeted learning and teaching activities,“ said Associate Professor Bower. “This is important because of the large range of educational possibilities that mobile phones enable, for instance using augmented reality and virtual reality, as well as a host of other educational apps.“ “However, ideally we would be helping children to become mature and responsible users of mobile phones. Especially by high school we should aspire that our senior students are learning the skills to ethically and appropriately use mobile devices for learning purposes, because they will need these skills in the workforce as well as in life in general.“ “Additionally, there are all sorts of spontaneous and student-directed learning opportunities that are lost by a blanket ban on mobile phones, such as searching the web for information as questions arise, capturing a photo of a presentation slide, contacting a peer for assistance, and so on. The many students who are responsible users of mobile phones are disempowered by this blanket ban.“ PROFESSOR JULIAN SEFTON-GREEN, DEAKIN UNIVERSITY Julian Sefton-Green is Professor of New Media Education at Deakin University. He says the debate over mobile phone use in schools has limited grounding in evidence.

“Discussion about the use of mobile phones in schools is only supported by anecdotal evidence,“ said Professor Sefton-Green. “There are no systematic accounts of how young people use phones in Australian schools or whether they act as touch points for disciplinary challenge or curriculum innovations.“ “There is little evidence about the role that phones play in young people’s school-related lives - including on journeys to and from school or

even in relationship to school-based but out-ofschool activities like homework or research.

Instances of school policy about the use of phones is rarely shared within and across institutions in any State.“ “The relationship between conflict within families and conflicts within schools around the use of mobile phones is not well investigated; individual instances of difficulty are treated as a stand in for larger patterns. Mobile phone use by older teens, especially where it has led to difficulty within the school, is treated as a stand in for larger patterns of use by even younger children.“ “Blaming mobile phones as a cause for a range of problems associated with a decline in wellbeing is disingenuous. Giving teachers and schools yet more responsibility for disciplinary flashpoints doesn’t seem a helpful way of solving larger social problems.“ DR NATALIE HENDRY, DEAKIN UNIVERSITY Dr Natalie Hendry, a lecturer in Deakin University’s Faculty of Arts and Education, researches young people’s mental health and social media practices. In her view, effective polices on mobile use requires schools to pay attention to the ways young people use their digital devices.

“No ban will ever eradicate abuse or bullying.

The effect of a ban depends on how, why and when students use their phones, and how schools try (or don’t try!) to understand young people’s digital cultures.“ “Mobile phones mean different things to different young people: a tool for learning or messaging a friend for the page numbers for tonight’s homework; a safe space to scroll through reassuring or hilarious memes when feeling stressed out; an emotional weight urging you to check your email again for new abusive messages; a camera to photograph a delicious cake baked in Home Economics.

High School Students Losing Maths Motivation MANY students, particularly girls, are “switching off” in mathematics in the middle years of schooling and into high school, says a new study.

Together with researchers from the University of Sydney in an Australian Research Council funded study, Dr Rebecca Collie of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) tracked 194 high school students’ engagement in maths over a five year period starting in grade 6 or 7.

In this time, participating students’ aspirations and engagement in maths declined. While boys and girls had the same initial level of aspiration, girls’ aspirations in maths declined more rapidly than boys’.

Within these broad trends, there were ebbs and flows and hints of what might help. “Students at different points along the way are switching on and switching off,” said Dr Collie. In her view, this shows the need for education interventions in mathematics at multiple points in students’ journeys through school.

Dr Collie suggests that interventions should target students’ motivation, since motivational factors such as seeing value in maths and believing in one’s own ability to succeed were strongly linked to more positive trajectories of aspirations and engagement.

One method that may help, said Dr Collie says, is building up students’ sense of control by helping them “see the link between their efforts and their achievement.”

“If disengagement or flagging aspirations are evident, there is a good evidence base for practices that can address this,” she said. “For example, research into learned helplessness and effort withdrawal identifies the importance of promoting greater control in students’ academic lives. Due to chronically low levels of control, students reduce their aspirations and can come to abandon effort.”

Similarly, a growth mindset may be helpful. “A growth mindset refers to the belief that our competence is malleable and that effort can help it grow,” said Dr Collie. “Teaching students that their competence can grow even in the face of challenge and setback in learning is one approach for promoting a growth mindset.”

Participants were drawn from one coeducational and three single-sex girls’ schools.

This meant that 80% of participants were girls. Dr Collie said this presented a particular opportunity in this study, given the known reluctance of girls’ to engage in and continue with STEM subjects in senior high school.

Our Strive program is central to our vision of growing the whole child Our award-winning instrumental music program consists of over 220 students (and growing) who regularly compete (and consistently win awards) in the Victorian School Music Festivals and Generations of Jazz Festival. In the 1970’s the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, local clergy and parishioners saw a real need for boys’ Catholic Education thus in 1978 St Monica’s College, Epping proudly became coeducational. Our school has flourished ever since.

In all of our local Primary schools (Government and Catholic) coeducation is offered. In all tertiary institutions (universities and TAFES etc.) coeducation is the only way education is provided. I argue that all education is delivered at its best through coeducation.

WHY? There are many reasons why I contend that the coeducation choice Monican parents have made for their children is the right one. Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendships develop in a natural way between girls and boys. This mutual feeling and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded person. These friendships emerge through shared experiences in classrooms, from participating in shared activities outside the formal curriculum, and through shared membership in clubs and teams.

Coeducation assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other, and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially.

Truly, coeducation reflects 100% the diversity of society. Coeducation, in other words, IS the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex. Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years.

Coeducation at its Best” I believe that girls are more confident to express their views on all manner of things in their daily life in a coeducational College and exactly the same applies to boys. Students feel comfortable in whom they are and the chances are many to develop healthy and positive attitudes and self-image. Let us hope that this in turn reduces harassment and bullying.

Coeducation is popular throughout the world and a chief reason for this is that it allows for greater socialisation, wider diversity of experiences and fewer gender stereotypes for young people. This can only be healthy, good, and most desirable. It could be stated that collaboration between the sexes, not separation, fosters equality. In a coeducational setting, students are exposed to both male and female role models, students learn to lead the opposite sex in all types of situations, and finding a group of friends to match up with is easier.

There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single sex education. These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying the coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person, confident and wise.

Victoria University Secondary College VICTORIA University Secondary College is a co-educational state Year 7-12 college with three campuses. The program extends enrichment opportunities for students both within and beyond the classroom. All students in the Enrichment Program develop an Enrichment Project over the course of each year. The project centres on developing an authentic product or performance, and allows students to build excellence in a realworld context.

SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM (SIP) The Spanish Immersion bilingual program (SIP) at Wyndham Central Secondary College is a wellresearched approach for promoting bi-literacy, bilingualism, and biculturalism for students. The underlying goal is to prepare students to be global citizens with abilities to listen, speak, read, and write in two languages.

In addition SIP students develop an appreciation for the second most used language and their cultures in a rigorous academic program. In order to achieve this aim SIP students acquire language skills and vocabulary while completing their core subjects including mathematics, science and humanities.
