Hitting the court again Tennis players were back out on court at Mount Evelyn Tennis Club last week after Covid-19 restrictions eased to allow clubs to re-open across metropolitan Melbourne.

Premier Dan Andrews announced on 18 October that outdoor sports settings such as tennis clubs, golf clubs and skateparks could reopen from 11:59pm that night.

Since then it’s been all systems go for local tennis clubs, with coaching and social hitting back on.The Star Mail News sent photographer Stewart Chambers out to grab some photos of tennis players in the swing of things once again.

Ms Robinson said that although education was a big part of the group she also wanted to collect data from the local community.

She has been asking people to post in the group the day after they sighted hoons, with information such as where and when they were spotted and if police were called and attended.

“My aim is to be able to get some numbers

and data and run it through Council so we can maybe get some CCTV and police resources, so they can patrol the area more often,” she said.

Senior Constable Ross Mitchell from Belgrave Police said police had been approached

by Council to organise a conversation with local residents about the issue of hoons.

“We think there are some things Council can do and we also thing there is some more action that police can do,” he said Continue page 3

There’s a growing push from communities in the Dandenong Ranges to put a stop to hoons in the region.

A new Facebook group called Stop the Hoons in the Hills has been created in a bid to leverage Yarra Ranges Council and local police to do more about reckless driving.

Group creator Beth Robinson said she started the group after noticing hoons had re-

turned to Sassafras following eased Covid-19 lockdowns.

“I live on my own and quite often I’m left awake at night because of hoons and there’s a big car park outside my house...they meet in there doing burnouts for hours on end,” she said.

“I wasn’t sure who to call and what to do, and I felt a bit scared and alone.

“I just wanted to create a page where likeminded people could not feel alone and be

Running for the kids

By Romy Stephens A Mount Evelyn man is set to embark on a 80 kilometre run to raise money for kids with cancer.

Dylan Taylor is currently training to run along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail and back in one day.

He has already raised over $3500 for the Kids with Cancer Foundation - a charity that raises funds to support Australian children with cancer.

Mr Taylor said it gave him a “warm feeling” to know he could help kids and their families that are doing it tough.

“Kids have just come into this life and have their whole life ahead of them...for them and their families to be able to live a normal life that’s pretty much what struck me the most,” he said.

“The key thing for me is just to be able to help a child’s life and their family.”

Despite having to stop his work for about 10 weeks due to lockdowns, Mr Taylor said Covid-19 actually helped inspire the run.

Having more spare time on his hands has meant Mr Taylor has been able to dedicate more time to the cause.

“The training I’ve been doing has been pretty full on. I’m running every second day, just building up the muscle to be able to complete this. I did a 42 kilometre run the other day,” he said.”I’m a fit person but 80 kilometres is still a big challenge.”

However, lockdowns have also seen the run postponed numerous times. Mr Taylor said he was waiting for restrictions to ease enough so

“I think having family and friends being involved on the day will make it a lot more special, a celebration for such a good cause,” he said.

Mr Taylor’s initial target was to raise $1000, but he has since upped it to $5000 after smashing that first goal.

Holding onto hope

By Romy Stephens Horse racing operators in the Yarra Valley are holding out hope that crowds will be a feature of this year’s spring carnival.

While most sporting events in Melbourne have been cancelled this year due to strict Covid-19 lockdowns, horse racing has been a rare industry permitted to continue - albeit without crowds.

But despite lockdowns beginning to ease, there is still no certainty as to when crowds will return to sporting events.

Healesville Amateur Racing Club president David Purcell said the club was “totally dependent on crowds for funding.”

“The professional clubs, compared to say the picnic racing clubs, receive dividends through the TAB turnover, whereas we don’t have any off-course turnover. We have oncourse turnover,” he said.

“Even if we were allowed to have our owners, we’re dependent on the people coming through the gate and people taking marquees.

“We have to keep cutting the grass, keep the grass and weeds down and naturally (pay for) our security, electricity, rates, insurance and so forth. They are all ongoing fixed costs before you open the gate.

“We’ve probably got $50,000 to $60,000 worth of fixed cost annually as a club.”

The club’s October meeting has already been cancelled, but Mr Purcell said he hoped it could host at least one race before the end of the year.

“We often do really well out of our November and December meetings, purely because of the Christmas function side of things,” he said.

Local horse racing venues, such as Healesville Amateur Racing Club, are heavily dependent on crowds for funding.

Despite being in a slightly better position, Yarra Glen’s Yarra Valley Racing is also set to be impacted if crowds aren’t permitted over spring.

“We’ll certainly see racing at our venue, as to whether crowds are able to attend, particularly in the spring, that’s at this stage not likely,”

Yarra Valley Racing CEO Brett Shambrook said.

“We can get through it from an operational perspective. From a financial perspective it does make it tough because that is how we make our money really, through crowds coming in.”

Mr Shambrook said travel restrictions were an additional factor that would influence crowds over spring.

“We’re located in Yarra Glen which falls under the umbrella of metropolitan. We’re considered to be a country club but we’re under that metro umbrella, so that makes it a little more difficult for us,” he said.

“The travel restrictions, the 5 kilometre and now the 25 kilometre, doesn’t help us a lot because our customers are probably coming from further afield.”

He added that the venue could “comfortably accommodate” about 2500 people safely.

“Our race course grounds are about 38,000 square meters so we could comfortably have 2500 people at the venue and they would have 15 square metres per person,” Mr Shambrook said.

“It would be financially viable, it would help us a hell of a lot because we’re a pretty large employer too, it would help a lot of our staff.”

The State Government’s roadmap for reopening indicates that professional sport and racing will be restricted until the state reaches the Covid Normal stage.

However, under the Last Step, outdoor and seated crowds will be permitted with patron caps.

Meanwhile, it states that “major events will be the subject of additional work and further consideration.”

Fatal Montrose collision claims two lives Two people died following a collision in Montrose on 19 October.

It’s understood a truck collided with a Toyota sedan on Mount Dandenong Road about 3.45pm.

Victoria Police said in a statement the sedan then collided with other vehicles.

“That sedan then collided with a third vehicle, which then collided with a fourth vehicle,” the statement said.

A 69-year-old woman from Mooroolbark,

who was a passenger in the sedan, was declared deceased at the scene.

The male driver of the sedan, a 72-year-old man also from Mooroolbark, was airlifted to hospital but later died.

In a statement, Ambulance Victoria said crews were assessing the man for suspected upper body injuries.

“No one else sustained injuries,” Victoria Police said.

“The driver of the truck is assisting police

with their enquiries.”

Police said Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene.

Mount Dandenong Road, between the Montrose roundabout and Canterbury Road reopened after being closed westbound.

Sgt Herdman said it was important that residents continued to report sightings.

“We encourage people to ring Triple-Zero so that a police resource will be assigned to it and people will attend,” he said.

Both Sgt Herdman and Ms Robinson said Mountain Highway, between The Basin and Sassafras, and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, from Ferntree Gully to Montrose, were the major hotspots for hoons in the region.

Stop the Hoons in the Hills is a private Facebook Group that was created on 20 October and has almost 300 members.

Storms hit again Emergency services were still responding to numerous calls for assistance on Monday following another wild weather event that hit the Yarra Ranges.

As of about 12:15pm on 26 October Lilydale SES were up to 214 jobs after storms hit the region the previous day.

The high winds and rainfall on 25 October also saw a 58-year-old woman lucky to escape serious injury when a tree fell on the road in front of her in Coldstream.

Maroondah Highway was closed to all traffic between Melba Highway and St Huberts Road after the incident.

Belgrave Police also received about five callouts over a period of eight hours, but said the main areas impacted by the storms included Mooroolbark, Mount Evelyn, Olinda and Sassafras.

Police urged residents to remain vigilant and be mindful of trees following the recent weather.

Secure your sheds Monbulk Police are urging residents around Macclesfield to secure their sheds, following a series of thefts and break-ins.

Police said a theft at a farm in Macclesfield was among numerous similar incidents in the region recently.

Other incidents have allegedly involved vehicles being tampered with and a vehicle having a brick thrown through it.

Police have urged people living in the outlying areas to remain vigilant when it comes to locking sheds. They are also reminding nearby residents that they are not immune from people trying to steal from them.

If residents see any suspicious cars of activity in the region they should contact Monbulk Police on 9756 6266.

Search for pavilion tagger Police are seeking public assistance to locate taggers who graffitied the new Monbulk Football Netball Club pavilion.

Police said the back of the pavilion was tagged on the weekend of 17 October with the letters ‘Joisco’.

Vehicle found after evading police A vehicle with two men inside was located after evading police in the Yarra Valley on the morning of 23 October.

Police said a white Commodore sedan evaded police in Healesville numerous times before being located in Macclesfield.

Two males, in about their mid-20s, were allegedly found in the car which matched descriptions from Healesville Police members.

Police said both men were from the Upper Yarra and the driver was interviewed before his car was impounded for 28 days.

Man arrested for drug trafficking A man from The Patch is set to face court after being arrested for trafficking cannabis.

Police said the 18-year-old man was charged and arrested in Emerald on the night of 16 October.

The man is set to appear at Ringwood Magistrates Court on 11 March next year.

Belgrave CFA nears 100

By Romy Stephens For almost a century Belgrave CFA has been serving its local community, through events such as Ash Wednesday, Black Saturday, a global pandemic and much more.

In the lead-up to the brigade’s 100th anniversary in 2023, members are looking to overhaul the Belgrave CFA’s physical collection of memorabilia, and establish an online collection.

Brigade member James Bakker said the community’s help was needed to make this happen.

“This is where community members can help with a unique opportunity to share their memories and contribute to the collection and maintenance of local history,” he said.

“We know there is a lot out there just hidden away. With many of us stuck at home, we have a fantastic opportunity to dust out the old photo albums and scramble through the attic.

“Maybe grandad’s old chest has some hidden treasures that need to see the light of day.”

Mr Bakker is leading the project with fellow Belgrave CFA member Craig Bruhn.

They are seeking anything that contributes to capturing the brigade’s and community’s history. That includes photos, historical records, memorabilia, memories, anecdotes (the funnier the better) and stories - written or oral.

The Belgrave Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the state’s busiest all-volunteer brigades and was established in 1923.

For its 75th anniversary, the brigade produced a book called Our History: March 1923 to June 2002 This collection described events such as the pre-electronic age installation of truck mounted base radios, Ash Wednesday, the annual Royal Children’s Hospital wheelbarrow push, formation of the junior fire brigade and the Ladies Auxiliary.

“The brigade’s membership, capabilities, responsibilities and contribution to the community continue to evolve,” Mr Bruhn said.

“Additionally, the local community has experienced many significant physical and cultural changes that sees Belgrave continue to evolve as a gateway to the hills.”

Planning is underway to organise a series of

year-long events and activities to celebrate the brigade’s 100-year milestone.

“The brigade is keen to involve the wider community including past members, their families, local interest and business groups, schools and community members,” Mr Bakker said.

Poetry goes online

By Romy Stephens This year’s national Woorilla Poetry Prize is one of the latest events that will shift to online next month.

The prize, that draws entries from all over Australia, was first held in 1989 and is now a stand-alone event of Emerald’s PAVE Festival.

The award ceremony is typically held in Emerald’s GEMCO Theatre but will now take place virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions.

While Covid-19 has impacted how the award ceremony will be held, it is also set to influence the nature of poetry that is submitted.

Emerald poet and storyteller John Sheills said a crisis like Covid-19 bears significant im-

pact on writers.

“There’s something about the sheer magnitude of a global pandemic that induces an awful inertia and without access to social exchange it’s a struggle to articulate this poetically,” he said.

The Woorilla Poetry Prize has two categories including The Judith Rodriguez Open Prize Category, judged by Nathan Curnow, and The Louise Rockne Youth Prize Category, judged by Emily Zoey Baker.

There is also a prize for those whose first language is not English.

The online event will be opened by Cardinia Mayor Jeff Springfield and will feature the

announcement of winners, readings of winning poems and performances by musicians Lili-Violet and James Franklin.

Talks from Kevin Brophy, Emeritus Professor of Creative Writing, Melbourne Uni and poet and author Sandy Jeffs will also be held.

The Woorilla Poetry Prize award ceremony will take place on 1 November at 2pm.

When they discover that the hotel is killing and butchering its guests, the revelation is both horrific and satisfying, as the prior clues come together.

Cadaver examines the cost of survival and the power of acting to give people purpose, for better or worse.

Leonora must use her wits and acting skills to survive, and the film keeps you constantly on-guard, challenging your assumptions until the ingenious, grisly final moments.

The basic premise is similar to JeanPierre Jeunet’s 1991 dark comedy Delicatessen, as both films feature a hotel with a cannibalistic secret in the postapocalypse, but Cadaver has plenty of its own macabre ideas.

Cadaver is a layered, superbly-paced horror film and a great choice for Halloween, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

Emerald history restored

By Meaghan Free A ray of sunlight has filtered through the coronavirus haze directly into Emerald.

Marvellous news that there will be a family of permanent caretakers moving into and resurrecting the clubhouse of the former Emerald Country Club. It has been a great sadness to all who have seen it being brutally vandalised since it closed three years ago.

Locals taking their daily hour of exercise over the lush fairways have been delighted to see constant improvements over the period of the recent lockdown. The Rakei family have been working long and hard during this time to make it not just habitable but restored.

The historic clubhouse, built in an English Arts and Crafts style includes locally sourced pink stone and was completed in 1930. The architects Cowper, Murphy and Appleford built many landmark Melbourne buildings including the Dendy Theatre in Brighton, The Regent Theatre on Collins St and the interior of the Palace Theatre on Bourke Street.

The vision of Bert S Stillwell and Harry W Treganowan, The Emerald Country Club was established in 1923 and is sited on the northern portion of the original Nobelius nursery.

Membership was originally only open to people who purchased land on the surrounding estate of Elm Crescent, Poplar Crescent, Sycamore Avenue, Oak Avenue, Nobelius Street and Lakeside Drive.

Cottages built on the estate needed to be approved to ensure that each had some distinctive quality of planning and building.

The current owner businessman Alex Wee, has decided that the only way to protect the building is to have permanent on-site caretakers. When Mr Wee and course management failed to come to an agreement in 2017, the 18 hole, 7 par challenging course was unfortunately closed to the chagrin of the local community.

Since the closure vandalism, fires, campers and questionable gatherings have all caused serious damage to the buildings.

The new residents are very happy for the wider community to continue enjoying walks on this beautiful expanse. This of course must happen with respect for their position as a family living with a right to peace and privacy.

Halloween on The Green is nowhere to be seen

By Romy Stephens Despite Halloween on the Green being cancelled this year, event organisers are encouraging families to still dress up and celebrate the occasion.

To compensate for the traditional Le Pine Funerals Mayors Parade that will be missed this year, Councillors from Yarra Ranges Council still got into the spooky spirit of things on 22 October.

Mayor Richard Higgins and Cr Tim Heenan got dressed up with Halloween on the Green creator Andrew Fillip-Gautier, entertainment director Rosalind Mackay and more to mark the event.

Mr Fillip-Gautier said Halloween on the Green, which is hosted by the Philanthropic Collective, will be “back in all its gory glory next year, with the emphasis on how death is celebrated through various religions and cultures.”

“It seems cruel to have to wait another year but that’s just what we will have to do as the team works to bring you even more hidden surprises on the day,” he said.

Mr Fillip-Gautier encouraged families to still celebrate Halloween this week.

“Sadly, Halloween on the Green will take a bow for 2020 but that doesn’t mean you still can’t dress up and celebrate the day at home with family, and perfect your costume for the best dressed,” he said.

Footy finals fever Students from Mount Dandenong Primary School had plenty to cheer about last week as they donned their football club’s colours in anticipation for the AFL Grand Final.

The school got into footy finals fever on 22 October, with students from all grades wearing vibrant club colours. The day came after primary school students returned to on-site learning on 12 October. Icy poles were also on sale with all proceeds going to the school’s Grade 6 graduation. The State Government announced on 26 October that graduation ceremonies could commence this term, allowing Grade 6 and Year 12 students and school staff to celebrate their final year at school.

By Jed Lanyon Healesville’s Grand Hotel has fitted out the pub’s exterior with several posters in a bid to lift community spirit.

Pedestrians and drivers passing the iconic hotel can easily spot the signage, which has been created by locals to share messages of support for those doing it tough.

Healesville resident and pub-goer Kersten Gentle said the idea came from her daughter Nikita, who pitched the idea to the business owners of the hotel.

“We recognised how community minded Lisa and Tom are and my daughter said, ‘why don’t we do some posters to brighten up the place as people are walking’ and the response from people has been amazing,” Ms Gentle said.

“This town has gone through a lot in the past and I know that if the community comes together now, we will make sure that everyone gets through this. And that’s what these posters are about; making sure that everyone comes through the other end of this pandemic.”

Business owner Lisa McKay-Campbell invites locals to design their own A2 posters to display across the pub as they enlist the services of Breen Printing to create their positive posters. Relatives of Ms McKay-Campbell, who were in Mallacoota at the time of the recent bushfires were involved in a similar feat paying respects to the nation’s firefighters.

The idea initially started as a home-schooling art class activity but is now open for people of all ages with time to spare in isolation.

“One of the biggest problems with the pandemic is the effect on people’s mental health, so if these posters can put a smile on someone’s face then the Grand is doing a good job ...

To me this is the perfect canvas for our town,” Ms Gentle said.

The Grand Hotel is now operating a drivethrough takeaway meal service for locals looking for a restaurant quality meal without having to leave the comfort of their car.

dinarily done ... It’s the only thing we can really do,” Ms McKay-Campbell said.

“You drive through the bottle shop and they pass it to you through the car window. You can literally come through in your pyjamas.”

As part of their takeaway menu, the hotel has also started cooking regular Sunday roasts for customers.

Youth funding for biodiversity projects Schools, childcare centres and youth groups in Cardinia and Yarra Ranges will share in over $400,000 worth of funding for biodiversity projects and learning activities.

This year’s Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants have been awarded to 113 recipients across the state.

The initiative will see $5000 grants go to Cire Children’s Services and Kindergarten Chirnside Park, Cire Children’s Service Mount Evelyn, 1st Gembrook Joey and Cub Packs and Gembrook Primary.

Eastern Victoria MP Harriet Shing said

the grants would provide numerous benefits to local youth.

“These projects will benefit young Victorians in Cardinia and Yarra Ranges by providing fun, interactive learning experiences to encourage appreciation and understanding of our natural environment.”

Environment minister Lily D’Ambrosio added that the funding would help establish hands-on environmental learning activities as students return to the classroom.

“With students returning to face-toface learning across Victoria, these proj-

ects will provide not only an opportunity to learn, but also promote health and wellbeing,” she said.

“The Victorian Government is committed to encouraging young Victorians to actively care for the natural environment.”

The Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants are funded by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning through its Victorian Landcare Program. The grants are delivered

by Landcare Australia as part of its Junior Landcare program.

Four local groups are among 113 recipients of this year’s Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants.

Looking out for seniors Eastern Community Legal Centre’s ROSE (Rights of Seniors in the East) program provides a holistic response for people who are at risk of, or experiencing elder abuse.

A community lawyer, advocate and financial counsellor work closely together in an integrated way, to help community members address elder abuse and related issues.

Elder abuse starts with disrespect, and disrespect of older people can start in small, seemingly insignificant ways - from birthday cards filled with ageist humour about memory loss, to joking about having a ‘senior’s moment’.

This disrespect can then present as living with an older person but not contributing to rent, bills or chores; condescending to an older person; or making decisions that affect the older person without consulting them. At the extreme end, disrespect can lead to abuse or harm of older people, having a significant

impact on the older person’s health and wellbeing.

To prevent elder abuse from happening in the first place, it’s important that we build communities and a society where all people, regardless of age, feel valued, safe and respected.

A case of elder abuse: ‘Brenda’ came to ECLC after she sold her house

and loaned most of the proceeds to her son ‘Grant’ to build a house with a granny flat. She hoped this would help Grant out and allow her to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Details of the loan agreement were not written down.

Brenda found living with Grant more challenging than she expected. He had regular angry outbursts for no reason. Their relationship broke down when Grant got angry with Brenda about her grandparenting style and he said she couldn’t see her grandchildren unsupervised.

Grant refused to go to family counselling or mediation, and also refused to sign an agreement about repayment of the loan. Instead of repaying the loan, Grant took out a mortgage on the property to purchase other properties.

Brenda decided that she could no longer live at the property with Grant. She now lives in an apartment provided by a community housing service.

Help from ROSE: Brenda’s housing worker referred her to ROSE for help. The ROSE team lodged a caveat over the property; this was to protect Brenda’s interest in the home. ROSE is also negotiating a payment plan with Grant to recover the money Brenda lent to him. The ROSE team continues to provide ongoing legal, social and financial counselling support to Brenda.

During this time of social distancing, ECLC continues to offer free legal, social and financial assistance by telephone and video call to people living in the eastern region of Melbourne, including across the Yarra Ranges.

OPINION Double standards on display I am writing to express my absolute outrage about your decision to publish an article ‘Election Allegations Aired’ (Star Mail, 19 October).

In particular I note that the ‘allegation’ you claim against candidate Amy Muratore, who is running for election in Streeton Ward, Yarra Ranges Council, is that she used a rude phrase two years ago on a private Facebook page. Is this what now counts for news in your publication?

Surely if this is at all newsworthy you must have done your due diligence to ensure that none of the other 40 plus candidates running in this election have never used the F word in question in private in the past two years?

Somehow I suspect this isn’t the case.

I am even more outraged about this socalled ‘reporting’ given that the Liberal ex-MP Stephen McArthur, who you have quoted at length in the article criticising Ms Muratore for her use of this phrase on a friend’s private Facebook page, was alleged to have used the same phrase himself in parliament. (Editor: Mr McArthur denies ever using the expletive in any public conversation in parliament).

So, the situation as it stands seems to be that a Liberal ex-MP who has a documented history of bullying women and who has been harassing Ms Muratore since the beginning of this election campaign, dredged up a comment on a private Facebook page from two years ago where Ms Muratore used an expletive in response to a shockingly racist comment made by another Liberal MP and instead of throwing out this ‘allegation’ like the trash it is, you decided to publish not only the allegation, but give the bully a public voice for his filth.

Instead of doing even the most basic of due diligence, your paper decided to amplify this man’s attacks on a woman candidate, including personal aspersions against her fitness as a parent and as a teacher, despite the fact that no other candidate was held to the same standard! The hypocrisy is stunning.

The story is so ridiculous it should have been thrown out before the first word was ever written. To think that an adult using an expletive phrase two years ago on a friend’s Facebook page could be newsworthy would be laughable if the article you published wasn’t so clearly malicious in intent.

If you had any journalistic integrity the article in question would have asked why an exMP would be harassing a young female candidate to begin with. That you chose to waste energy and ink on a story that gives credence to the idea that a woman would be unfit for office because she swore two years ago is ridiculous in the extreme.

Does swearing in years past also render male candidates unfit for office, I wonder?

Clearly not. The fact that you published aspersions on Ms Muratore’s personal and professional fitness is truly despicable. The double standard you have displayed here is nothing short of shocking and completely undermines any trust any reader could have in the journalistic integrity of your newspaper.

Editor’s note: The decision to publish the story in question was a considered one and included a substantial, very well-expressed, thoughtful statement from Ms Muratore who did an admirable job of defending herself. It is up to readers to decide if they agree that the matter was petty, vindictive or sexist on behalf of Mr McArthur or whether someone standing for public office, be they male or female, should be held to account for their past words and actions. And if, as the letter writers on this page allege, female candidates are held to different standards, then isn’t it important to shine a light on the lengths to which individuals will go to impede their election to public office?

Strong values With respect to the article ’Election Allegations Aired’ (Star Mail, 20 October), I am disappointed by the way in which you have allowed the comments made on a private Facebook post to be published, regarding the Streeton Ward council candidate Amy Muratore with a clear agenda to smear her professionally as a teacher, as a local mother and active community member, and finally as candidate with strong values around inclusiveness and diversity, in particular around those of minority groups.

As a mother of students of Amy’s, a local small business owner, active community member and a regular local NFP organisation volunteer, and as a Muslim woman, I am proud of the values Amy Muratore holds and her strong stance on racism and calling out those that promote it as elected members. I can confirm that these are the exact credentials that both a candidate, and a teacher should hold, as they support the safety of myself and my children in our local community, which is made unsafe by comments and views of people such as MP Jason Wood, of which Amy has addressed.

In my experience of Amy as a teacher, she has gone above and beyond in celebrating the diversity in her school and classroom, to a degree I have not experienced elsewhere in Victoria, or any other state in which I have lived, including in areas where my children were not the minority.

Articles like this seek to divide our community, and discredit those that truly represent the diversity of the Dandenong Ranges community and in particular a woman, young

mother, active community member and teacher who is in touch with the many levels of the community of which she has the opportunity to represent. If this is all you can find fault with, this is a reflection on your publication and I thank you for confirming that Amy Muratore is passionate about diversity and a suitable candidate for the Streeton Ward electorate. It is disappointing that (the Mail) would seek to publish such an article when there is currently only 1 female councillor among a panel of men, and I question if such language would be more than acceptable should it be used by a male candidate? I call on you to champion such progressive candidates and condemn comments that seek to divide us.

We have the opportunity to elect a true representative of our community, and I support Amy Muratore in her role as a teacher and call on those of Streeton Ward to support this young woman. I wish Amy all the best in this election.

Double standard As a group which advocates for equal rights for women, we strongly object to the treatment given to Yarra Ranges Council candidate Amy Muratore.

It appears that Amy’s comment from 2 years ago and written in response to a post by a friend in that friend’s personal Facebook, ren-

ders Amy an unsuitable candidate, in addition to casting doubt on her integrity as a mother and a teacher.

Not only is this incorrect, as anyone who knows Amy will attest to, but we question why equal scrutiny of all candidates, including the man who alerted your reporter to Amy’s “comment”, was not done. Why should a female candidate be required to defend private comments made in years past when no similar standard exists for either your male source or other candidates?

We strongly object to the double standard that has been applied here, which further highlights the gendered barriers to women’s full participation in our democracy.

Please Star Mail, do not resort to this type of reporting. Up till now you have been fair and reasonable. Unlike some of the candidates who are running in these council elections.

Getting back in the swing Residents across the Yarra Ranges have experienced their first sense of freedom since August, with Covid-19 restrictions easing to allow for tennis, golf and the re-opening of skateparks last week.

Paving the way forward

That’s the saying guiding revered community sporting figure Marg Jones in her role as part of AFL Outer East’s new women’s advisory group.

The newly-formed group is made up of a number of key figures from within clubland across the region, as well as region general manager Aaron Bailey and Nicole Kimpton and Josette O’Donnell from Eastern Health.

AFL Outer East’s finance officer Sheryn Harbert is also part of the group, along with a number of the most influential ladies from within clubland across the region - including Jones, Bec St Mart from Cranbourne, AnneMarie Ebbels from the Healesville juniors, Mount Evelyn’s Sue Harty, and Broadford Football Netball Club president Bonnie Cavanagh.

More than half of all participants in the region’s competitions are female, and the advisory group aims to promote the involvement - and development - of women in leadership roles within clubs.

“Creating inclusive environments for females in our competitions and our region needs to extend past participation on game day,” Bailey explained.

“We are committed to ensuring we create opportunities for women to take senior leadership roles, both committee and coaching.

“With over 50 per cent of our participants being female, this is a responsibility we take really seriously.

“This is a wonderful initiative and we thank our current female leaders and Eastern Health for embracing and driving a program such as this that provides increased opportunity and ongoing support for the women of Outer East.”

Jones’ involvement over a long period of time at Pakenham is the stuff of legend, but she’d be the last to admit that.

Like so many others throughout the region, she’s far more interested in rolling the sleeves up and furthering her club and her community in the sporting space.

“This is a wonderful initiative by AFL Outer East, and I feel very honoured to be invited to participate and represent Pakenham, and (have) the opportunity, personally, to work with this inspiring group of women,” she said.

“With the growing profile of women’s sport,

Bonnie Cavanagh. and the momentum only increasing, I personally think it is important for the young, talented girls and women coming through grassroots community sport on and off the field and court to see role models around them.

“I personally love the saying: ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’.

“I have been on committees since I was 18 and over my 39 years have seen many changes.

“One of the aims of this advisory board is to raise the profile of women in the league and promote inclusion.

“I congratulate Aaron Bailey and his team at AFL Outer East on looking at gender equality across the league, in particular in roles of leadership. The potential and opportunity here is inspiring.”

Cavanagh, a proud Aboriginal woman, already has an impressive reputation in Outer East circles - despite Broadford not yet having taken to the region’s courts or fields.

And it’s easy to see why.

“The league is very proactive in a number of areas and they’ve been wanting to raise the profile of women within the league, and promote female inclusion - finding a way that you can address matters that are affecting female footballers and netballers, and also the volunteers around the league,” she explained.

“I think the concept is a great show of leadership and it’s a genuine means of increasing female participation.

Despite being new to the AFL Outer East set-up, Broadford - and club president Bonnie Cavanagh - have already made a strong impression on the region.

Pictures: SUPPLIED “It doesn’t matter if someone is young, or a woman, or from a different background - everyone should have an opportunity to have their say or some input so they can genuinely contribute to their clubs.

“With this group, we’ve got the opportunity to give advice that’s actually taken on board.

This isn’t just a box ticking exercise for diversity - this is very genuine, and there’s a very real opportunity to bring in some great ideas and events.”

The women’s advisory group is set to support AFL Outer East in developing a gender equality policy, advising the commission on matters affecting women and girls, and priorities for the 2021 season.

AFL Outer East’s commitment to inclusion has also extended to the all abilities space, with the region inviting its clubs to become ‘All Abilities Centres’ moving forward.

This is set to include information sessions for families within the region, explaining what’s on offer.

“We’ve come into the league as a new club (in 2020), and what I’ve found really impressive is that when they’re making decisions that directly impact on a particular group, they’re making sure that the right people are at the table when those decisions are made.

“If you’re trying to make it equal, don’t make it about one group over another.

“My passion is diversity and inclusion, and if you’re trying to have a good, broad understanding that’s reflective of your community, you really need to have a really good commitment to making sure you’ve got a diverse group that’s very inclusive.

“You never know what people’s backgrounds or talents may include. It’s about giving people a safe platform to get the confidence to show what they can bring to the table.”

Cavanagh said she’s proud to be involved in an initiative that empowers people - whoever they may be, regardless of background or gender - to take a more active role in how their clubs and competitions are run and led.

Dr Tucker streaks away in Great Chase for charity Greyhound racing’s 2020 TAB Great Chase Grand Final may have looked different to the 22 community groups from across Victoria that watched the race via a private Zoom link, but all the excitement and adrenaline that the Grand Final brings to The Meadows each year was still very apparent.

The Great Chase Grand Final traditionally draws more than 500 people to the racetrack for what is a wonderful celebration, however crowds are currently not allowed on course because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, groups which attended last year’s Grand Final still had the chance to win a share in $24,000 prize money, including a top prize of $10,000 for the group paired with the winning greyhound.

A random draw took place partnering the eight competing greyhounds with eight of the community groups - all of whom belong to Victoria’s disability sector.

Coming in first place was promising greyhound Dr. Tucker, trained at Darriman by Bill McMahon, who was partnered with Wood ‘n’ Crete Products, an organisation which centres around providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

The organisation’s product coordinator, Russell Streeter was thrilled by the result.

“The $10,000 will come in very handy. We are currently looking at building a new activity room and undercover area at our facility, so this money will go a long way towards making that happen.”

Meanwhile, the remaining seven groups, including Estia Health Yarra Valley, each collected $2,000.

Since 2003 GRV has donated more than $650,000 to community organisations that care for intellectually or physically disabled people through the Great Chase, with the event being supported by TAB since 2008.
