perspective. From a financial perspective it does make it tough because that is how we make our money really, through crowds coming in.”

Mr Shambrook said travel restrictions were an additional factor that would influence crowds over spring.

“We’re located in Yarra Glen which falls under the umbrella of metropolitan. We’re considered to be a country club but we’re under that metro umbrella, so that makes it a little more difficult for us,” he said.

“The travel restrictions, the 5 kilometre

and now the 25 kilometre, doesn’t help us a lot because our customers are probably coming from further afield.”

He added that the venue could “comfortably accommodate” about 2500 people safely.

“Our race course grounds are about 38,000 square meters so we could comfortably have 2500 people at the venue and they would have 15 square metres per person,” Mr Shambrook said.

“It would be financially viable, it would help us a hell of a lot because we’re a pretty large employer too, it would help a lot of our staff.”

The State Government’s roadmap for reopening indicates that professional sport and racing will be restricted until the state reaches the Covid Normal stage.

However, under the Last Step, outdoor and seated crowds will be permitted with patron caps. Meanwhile, it states that “major events will be the subject of additional work and further consideration.”

Premier Dan Andrews has flagged that more announcements on easing restrictions will be made soon, provided recorded Covid-19 case numbers remain low.

Horse racing operators in the Yarra Valley are holding out hope that crowds will be a feature of this year’s spring carnival.

While most sporting events in Melbourne have been cancelled this year due to strict Covid-19 lockdowns, horse racing has been a rare industry permitted to continue - albeit without crowds.

But despite lockdowns beginning to ease, there is still no certainty as to when crowds will return to sporting events.

Healesville Amateur Racing Club president David Purcell said the club was “totally dependent on crowds for funding.”

“The professional clubs, compared to say the picnic racing clubs, receive dividends through the TAB turnover, whereas we don’t have any off-course turnover. We have oncourse turnover,” he said.

“Even if we were allowed to have our owners, we’re dependent on the people coming through the gate and people taking marquees.

“We have to keep cutting the grass, keep the grass and weeds down and naturally (pay for) our security, electricity, rates, insurance and so forth. They are all ongoing fixed costs before you open the gate.

“We’ve probably got $50,000 to $60,000 worth of fixed cost annually as a club.”

The club’s October meeting has already been cancelled, but Mr Purcell said he hoped it could host at least one race before the end of the year.

“We often do really well out of our November and December meetings, purely because of the Christmas function side of things,” he said.

“We’d be hoping to get crowds in excess of 1000 at least.”

Despite being in a slightly better position, Yarra Glen’s Yarra Valley Racing is also set to be impacted if crowds aren’t permitted over spring.

“We’ll certainly see racing at our venue, as to whether crowds are able to attend, particularly in the spring, that’s at this stage not likely,” Yarra Valley Racing CEO Brett Shambrook said.

Running for the kids

By Romy Stephens A Mount Evelyn man is set to embark on a 80 kilometre run to raise money for kids with cancer.

Dylan Taylor is currently training to run along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail and back in one day.

He has already raised over $3500 for the Kids with Cancer Foundation - a charity that raises funds to support Australian children with cancer.

Mr Taylor said it gave him a “warm feeling” to know he could help kids and their families that are doing it tough.

“Kids have just come into this life and have their whole life ahead of them...for them and their families to be able to live a normal life that’s pretty much what struck me the most,” he said.

“The key thing for me is just to be able to help a child’s life and their family.”

Despite having to stop his work for about 10 weeks due to lockdowns, Mr Taylor said Covid-19 actually helped inspire the run.

Having more spare time on his hands has meant Mr Taylor has been able to dedicate more time to the cause.

“The training I’ve been doing has been pretty full on. I’m running every second day, just building up the muscle to be able to complete this. I did a 42 kilometre run the other day,” he said.”I’m a fit person but 80 kilometres is still a big challenge.”

However, lockdowns have also seen the run postponed numerous times. Mr Taylor said he was waiting for restrictions to ease enough so

“I think having family and friends being involved on the day will make it a lot more special, a celebration for such a good cause,” he said.

Mr Taylor’s initial target was to raise $1000, but he has since upped it to $5000 after smashing that first goal.

Balgownie Estate Vineyard Resort and Spa, like many tourism operators, is looking forward to reopening in the near future, pending the state government’s announcement on the easing of restrictions.

Balgownie Estate is planning for the reopening of accommodation and overnight stays from 2 November just in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend.

Resort and operations manager Melanie Watson said they are looking forward to bouncing back from a devastating start to the year when the property was damaged in a fire as well as being impacted by the Covid-19 restrictions for much of the year.

“The hospitality industry is full of passionate and lively people who love to be surrounded by people wanting to have a good time.

“The whole team’s on board and super excited to get back and to get onto something new as well.”

Ms Watson said their social media and emails had been abuzz with people hoping to book in as soon as Balgownie Estate could reopen their doors.

“We’re looking forward to getting everything nice and fresh and clean and ready for them.”

When the estate reopened in June, the return was marred by a kitchen fire which destroyed the venue’s restaurant. Ms Watson said she is hopeful to see rebuilding works commence in November for a June reopening of the permanent restaurant.

In the meantime, the business has pivoted their operations to a temporary ‘Balgownie Eatery’ pop-up kitchen marquee featuring a menu allowing guests to continue to enjoy high quality locally sourced produce. Plans are also in place for a free shuttle to nearby restaurants.

Police describe a 58 year old female driver, who had a tree fall on her car as “very fortunate” to have escaped injury.

The Maroondah Highway in Coldstream was closed to all traffic between Melba Highway and St Huberts Road for a period of time on Sunday night when a large tree fell across the highway crushing the front of a vehicle.

Wild weather Multiple police, fire brigade and SES units were kept busy across the weekend having attended to a large volume of fallen trees as a result of strong winds across eastern metropolitan Melbourne.

A number of power lines were brought down across roads as a flood watch warning was issued for the Yarra River.

Operation Saturn Police launched Operation Saturn, a road policing operation that will run from Thursday 22 October to Sunday 8 November 2020.

The state-wide operation will aim to prevent further trauma on Victorian roads caused by dangerous driving in both metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Balgownie Estate Ms Watson said it had been frustrating preparing and investing to reopen in June only to close within a matter of weeks. She hopes Balgownie Estate will be able to remain open permanently as the threat of the Covid-19 outbreak diminishes.

“The concern for us as operators is if we’re going to continue down this path of these outbreaks with a pattern of opening and closing. It makes it really hard for a business to continue that way and I’m not sure how many times people can do it.

“It costs money to prepare our gardens as they can get out of control here.

“We need a couple weeks to get organised, if you spend the money and they say it’s not going to happen, it’s really hard for operators to manage a business throughout that.”

Ms Watson said a focus had been trying to maintain positive messages between management and staff throughout a difficult period.

“We’ve just gone through a weekend of watching sporting events interstate with crowds of twenty and thirty thousand people.

“It’s up to us as management to hold strong and say ‘this is what we’re going to do’. We try to stay positive and let them know we’ve got a plan either way.”

Vehicle found after evading police A vehicle with two men inside was located after evading police in the Yarra Valley on the morning of 23 October.

Police said a white Commodore sedan evaded police in Healesville numerous times before being located in Macclesfield.

Two males, in about their mid-20s, were allegedly found in the car which matched descriptions from Healesville Police members.

Police said both men were from the Upper Yarra and the driver was interviewed before his car was impounded for 28 days.

Services for Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) is pushing to see a dermatology outpatient clinic implemented at Healesville Hospital.

A letter penned by SHHAG’s chairperson Jane Judd and deputy chairperson Fiona McAllister, to Eastern Health requested a video meeting following a “groundswell of support” for the initiative.

SHHAG said they were approached by a community member regarding the idea, then took it to social media where it gained more support from locals.

“Our Facebook page had in excess of 2000 people engaged and 50 individual comments from community members responding positively in just 48 hours,” the letter from SHHAG said.

“It appears some respondents currently

Call for more funds for regional roads Roads across regional Victoria are suffering from neglect and a lack of maintenance, and the Melba Highway is no exception, according to Eildon MP Cindy McLeish.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms McLeish called on the Minister for Roads to immediately provide funding and resources to fix the problems on the Melba Highway.

“Potholes, broken surfaces and ruts along the Melba Highway grow by the day, both in size and in number. The condition of the highway is definitely not helped by poor drainage which plagues the road network,” Ms McLeish said.

“It is hard to tell exactly where the worst spots are because there are so many. I drive along the Melba frequently and have seen the damage first hand.”

“There are many areas that need attention.

The State Labor Government has forgotten this highway and certainly Victorian roads.”

The Melba Highway is a key highway for north-south traffic. It is a popular route for those coming from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne to the Hume Highway through Benalla.

Ms McLeish said when Victoria lifts restrictions post-Covid, road conditions will only further deteriorate with the large volume of traffic.

She said she has been fighting for various road repairs along the Melba Highway since 2016 and has never seen it in a worse state.

“The damage caused along the Melba Highway is making driving conditions dangerous.

The Andrews Labor government needs to stop

Motorists checked Additional Covid-19 vehicle checkpoints were set up in suburbs across the Yarra Ranges on 23 October, ahead of the long weekend. It’s understood that Upper Ferntree Gully and Wandin were the latest suburbs to feature vehicle checkpoints, with Coldstream having one since earlier this year.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said further vehicle checkpoints would be introduced from 23 October.

“Drivers can expect to see additional mobile coronavirus checkpoints set up on other feeder roads,” the spokesperson said.

“If drivers try to use other roads to get around vehicle checkpoints, there is every chance another mobile checkpoint will be operating.”

The additional checkpoints came ahead of the AFL Grand Final on 24 October. The five kilometre limit for exercise and shopping was extended to 25 kilometres on 18 October, however, restrictions still prevented guests in homes ahead of the long weekend.

The penalty for unauthorised gatherings is a $4957 fine.

Summer crossing blitz Works to remove two dangerous and congested level crossings at Mooroolbark and Lilydale will ramp up over summer.

The level crossings at Manchester Road in Mooroolbark and Maroondah Highway in Lilydale clog roads and put lives at risk, with 13 crashes in the past decade and one tragic fatality.

More than 53,000 vehicles use these crossings each day and the boom gates can be down for up to a quarter of the two-hour morning peak, according to the state government.

Major construction to remove these level crossings by 2022, build rail bridges and new stations for Mooroolbark and Lilydale will

start in December, with buses replacing trains between Ringwood and Lilydale from 11-20 December and some local road closures with traffic detours in place.

The nine-day construction blitz will kick off a busy summer at the sites as crews build foundations for the new rail bridges with large machinery, and install new underground cables.

A further week-long rail line closure will take place at the end of summer, with details to be confirmed as works progress.

Monbulk MP James Merlino said, “I know these communities can’t wait to be level crossing-free - and with brand new stations and a

new multideck carpark, we’re transforming the travel experience for our outer eastern suburbs.”

Early works are also now underway to build a new multi-deck car park that will double the number of spaces for commuters at Mooroolbark Station by adding 450 new and upgraded spaces.

The new Mooroolbark multi-deck car park is being delivered through the Victorian Government’s Car Parks for Commuters Program, which is creating 11,000 new and upgraded car spaces at train stations to unclog neighbouring streets and help more people use public transport.

The multi-deck car park will feature lifts to improve accessibility, CCTV and better lighting for commuters’ safety, with community feedback helping to refine the design to suit locals’ needs.

The existing Mooroolbark Station commuter car park is now closed, and a temporary car park on the Cardigan Road reserve is open until the new multi-deck car park opens in 2022.

The project is the first part of upgrades along the Belgrave and Lilydale lines, paving the way for more trains more often in the future.

A total of eight level crossings are being removed on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines. The Mooroolbark and Lilydale level crossings will be removed in 2022.

When they discover that the hotel is killing and butchering its guests, the revelation is both horrific and satisfying, as the prior clues come together.

Cadaver examines the cost of survival and the power of acting to give people purpose, for better or worse.

Leonora must use her wits and acting skills to survive, and the film keeps you constantly on-guard, challenging your assumptions until the ingenious, grisly final moments.

The basic premise is similar to JeanPierre Jeunet’s 1991 dark comedy Delicatessen, as both films feature a hotel with a cannibalistic secret in the postapocalypse, but Cadaver has plenty of its own macabre ideas.

Cadaver is a layered, superbly-paced horror film and a great choice for Halloween, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

By Jed Lanyon Preparations for the upcoming bushfire season are stepping up as part of the recent Fire Action Week.

Fire and rescue agencies have started their preparations under a Covid-safe plan this year to ensure burns and fuel reduction activity can be conducted safely, and all Victorians are being asked to do the same.

Fire Action Week, which ran until 25 October, is a time for households to increase their understanding of local fire risks, prepare their properties and plan how to stay safe.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) are undertaking fuel management works to reduce the risk of bushfire for communities and the environment.

FFMV has recruited additional seasonal firefighters in the Port Phillip region, with

more than 70 fixed-term and 320 incident management team members and permanent firefighters to be in place across the region from mid-November.

FFMV said this preparation builds on their work throughout the year, including planned burning, slashing and mulching to reduce the speed and intensity of potential bushfires in the region.

According to FFMV, planned burning in the Port Phillip region has covered 2755 hectares since last winter with crews taking every opportunity to conduct burns when conditions allow and it is safe to do so.

This has included planned burning to reduce bushfire risk in the Upper Yarra Valley, east of Warburton, several burns around Reefton and McMahon’s Creek townships.

This includes high priority burns conducted on Mt Dandenong near the townships of

Olinda and Kalorama, and in the Silvan Reservoir to help protect critical water treatment infrastructure.

In the same period, mechanical works covered nearly 1000 hectares, with crews using heavy machinery to mulch flammable vegetation to reduce fuel.

FFMV Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Port Phillip, Shannon Devenish, said the works had taken place while adhering to public health and hygiene guidelines across the state.

“We have established procedures to help us conduct bushfire suppression during the coming season, while delivering on our health and safety obligations. These procedures have been put in place for the safety of our staff and the public.

“These procedures include accommodation of firefighters, incident control centres, aviation, first attack and firefighter training.

Our focus remains on being able to do our work safely this summer while continuing to help protect Victorians from bushfire.”

Auditor-General raises concerns about bushfire policy The Auditor-General has cast doubts on the Andrews Government’s Safer Together bushfire policy, citing insufficient information to judge its effectiveness, while the amount of prescribed burns is well below target.

The Auditor-Generals’ Reducing Bushfire risk report, tabled in Parliament on 14 October, found that there was insufficient information available to understand the effectiveness and impacts of the government agencies’ risk-reduction activities.

Agencies examined were the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Parks Victoria, the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Emergency Management Victoria, Energy Safe Victoria and three local councils - East Gippsland, Murrindindi and Whittlesea.

The report’s key conclusions were: Over the past four years, DELWP has prescribed burnt only 86,744 hectares rather than the 200,000 to 275,000ha required to achieve the 70 per cent residual risk target, with the target only achieved by including areas burn by large bushfires. Safer Together aims to reduce the state’s bushfire risk to or below 70 per cent of what it would be without risk-reduction treatment.

In 2019-20, DELWP delivered only 43 per cent of the ‘priority’ burns and only 30 per cent of ‘normal ranked’ burns.

Reducing risk across the state also requires a strong focus on treating private land to complement action on public land.

DELWP advised the Government that it could reduce Victoria’s bushfire risk by 30 per cent with the $50 million in annual funding allotted to it but did not point out it could achieve greater risk reduction with more investment.

The program to make powerline safer has had successes, but the legislative requirement to bury bare-wire powerlines will take 30-50 year to complete, still leaving bushfire risk.

“We did not examine frontline bushfire response or emergency management,” the report said.

The report said the hectare-based fuel reduction target arising from the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires was replaced in 2015 by the Inspector-General for Emergency Management’s risk reduction target. This prioritises burns in areas that will reduce the most risk and led to the Safer Together policy.

A Latrobe Valley consultant and forestry expert, John Cameron, said the fact that 70 per cent residual risk level target was only reached by including large bushfires was “nonsense.”

“Large bushfires are the outcome the policy was meant to avoid. Further it has been shown that wildfire is not as effective as low

intensity prescribed burning in reducing risks from subsequent bushfires,” he said.

Mr Cameron, from Traralgon and a former general manager of Australian Paper Plantations, said fire behaviour experts believe 70 per cent residual risk was way too high.

“Excessive fuel contributed substantially to last summer’s bushfire losses along with delayed initial attack and poor suppression under favourable weather in the two weeks after ignition,” he said.

Mr Cameron said Victoria’s 2019-20 mega bushfire could have been prevented if southwest Western Australia’s best practice fire mitigation policy had been in place.

The 2009 Royal Commission recommended 5 per cent fuel reduction each year, while experts called for 8 per cent in line with WA practise. Victoria ignored the recommendation and introduced Safer Together.

“The resulting prescribed burning was 2 per cent, well below the (Royal Commission) target. Last summer about 1.6 million ha was burnt, 396 houses destroyed, businesses irreparably damaged and five lives lost,” he said.

“Safer Together was not safer, or more effective, not what local rural communities wanted.”

The Auditor-General said power lines had started many of Victoria’s major bushfires. The Powerline Bushfire Safety Program (PBSP), a $750 million, 10-year program to reduce this risk, includes two major parts - the $500 million Network Assets Project (NAP) and the $200 million Powerline Replacement Fund (PRF).

NAP involves safety switches with worldfirst technology (rapid earth fault current limiters, or REFCLs) and other means that reduce the risk of fires. PRF covers, insulates, buries or removes high-voltage barrewire powerlines in 11 of Victoria’s 33 highest

bushfire risk areas.

PRF was completed in March, ahead of its January 2021 deadline, for $188 million.

“NAP is still ongoing,” the report said, with NAP’s final costs cost about $747 million.

When NAP is completed in April 2023, its REFCL technology is expected to reduce the risk of powerlines starting bushfires by 33.7 per cent.

“The PRF has reduced the risk of powerlines starting bushfires by 98 to 99 per cent on treated powerlines.,” the report said.

When NAP is completed, all high-voltage power lines in the 33 highest risk areas would be protected, reducing the risk level by 58.6 per cent.

“Due to limited funding, DELWP was only able to insulate or bury 41 per cent of the high-voltage bare-wire powerlines in 11 of the 33 highest bushfire risk areas,” the report said.

“Legislation requires electricity distribution businesses to bury remaining bare-wire powerlines in all of these areas at the end of their life. Based on their current replacement rate, DELWP and Energy Safe Victoria estimate that will take approximately 30 to 50 years to complete, which they consider too slow to reduce the remaining risk.”

The report said NAP’s REFCL technology was operating at 19 zone substations on 17 total fire ban days in 2019-20. The technology was activated 49 times by electrical faults.

“Twenty-four of these would have likely started a bushfire,” the report said.

“Despite these faults, no fires started on REFCL-protected networks. The REFCLs potentially prevented ignitions at a time when Victoria was enduring catastrophic bushfire activity.”

A grand final page turner Between Footy Colours Day and Book Week, local primary schools were kept busy as returning students dressed up in all colour and creativity.

Healesville Primary School students celebrated the final day of Book Week (17-23 October) by dressing up in the costumes of some of their favourite characters.

While Woori Yallock Primary School students wore their AFL club’s colours in anticipation for the AFL Grand Final.

Healesville principal Tracey RobertsonSmith said it was “a joy“ to have the school filled with children again as students returned to school earlier this month.

“After being here throughout lockdown and only having a small amount of kids on location, it’s just so nice to hear the laughter and see them playing again. Hopefully they are here for the rest of the term.”

By Jed Lanyon Healesville’s Grand Hotel has fitted out the pub’s exterior with several posters in a bid to lift community spirit.

Pedestrians and drivers passing the iconic hotel can easily spot the signage, which has been created by locals to share messages of support for those doing it tough.

Healesville resident and pub-goer Kersten Gentle said the idea came from her daughter Nikita, who pitched the idea to the business owners of the hotel.

“We recognised how community minded Lisa and Tom are and my daughter said, ‘why don’t we do some posters to brighten up the place as people are walking’ and the response from people has been amazing,” Ms Gentle said.

“This town has gone through a lot in the past and I know that if the community comes together now, we will make sure that everyone gets through this. And that’s what these posters are about; making sure that everyone comes through the other end of this pandemic.”

Business owner Lisa McKay-Campbell invites locals to design their own A2 posters to display across the pub as they enlist the services of Breen Printing to create their positive posters. Relatives of Ms McKay-Campbell, who were in Mallacoota at the time of the recent bushfires were involved in a similar feat paying respects to the nation’s firefighters.

The idea initially started as a home-schooling art class activity but is now open for people of all ages with time to spare in isolation.

“One of the biggest problems with the pandemic is the effect on people’s mental health, so if these posters can put a smile on someone’s face then the Grand is doing a good job ...

To me this is the perfect canvas for our town,” Ms Gentle said.

“You drive through the bottle shop and they pass it to you through the car window. You can literally come through in your pyjamas.”

As part of their takeaway menu, the hotel has also started cooking regular Sunday roasts for customers.

New location for market The Yarra Valley Farmer’s Market is set to return as the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group (YVRFG) announced the monthly event will be moving from Yering Station to Punt Road Winery from November.

The YVRFG, which notched up its 20th anniversary in 2018, is responsible for the oldest and longest running farmer’s market in Victoria.

Chairperson and market co-ordinator Frances Caltieri said the committee and stallholders are looking forward to holding their first market in November, at the new location.

“The past few months have been very hard on the stallholders and public, as our markets have had to be postponed due to Covid-19, so we are delighted that our market is able to run again on Sunday 15 November, at our beautiful new location - Punt Road Winery.

“We’re looking forward to seeing our usual loyal customers again and hopefully meeting some new ones too - Punt Road is a fantastic central spot for our market’s new home and it’s easy for people to find being virtually on the Maroondah Highway.

Dingos leap for health checks at the sanctuary Healesville Sanctuary dingos Dargo and Maliki happily take turns leaping onto a boulder to allow a keeper to check their ears, eyes and teeth. Every successful health check earns a treat, and positive reinforcement.

“We do it regularly, so it’s really established as something they’re used to,” explains dingo keeper Lauren Nankervis. “We want to spot any potential health issues right away.”

The dingoes also get full-body pat downs to assess how much body fat they have, the condition of their coats and overall health.

Dargo is an alpine dingo, with a thick fluffy coat of fur that makes it difficult to assess his condition, so training to allow an assessment through touch is beneficial for both the animal and the team that cares for him.

Maliki is a tropical dingo and naturally much leaner than Dargo, so keepers monitor her to ensure her weight stays in a healthy range.

Ms Nankervis said the dingoes always choose whether they will participate in training.

“The dingoes definitely enjoy their training. Not only do they get their favourite rewards, whether that’s bits of quail or ear rubs, it’s also mentally stimulating for them.

Looking out for the rights of seniors Eastern Community Legal Centre’s ROSE (Rights of Seniors in the East) program provides a holistic response for people who are at risk of, or experiencing elder abuse.

A community lawyer, advocate and financial counsellor work closely together in an integrated way, to help community members address elder abuse and related issues.

Elder abuse starts with disrespect, and disrespect of older people can start in small, seemingly insignificant ways - from birthday cards filled with ageist humour about memory loss, to joking about having a ‘senior’s moment’.

This disrespect can then present as living with an older person but not contributing to rent, bills or chores; condescending to an older person; or making decisions that affect the older person without consulting them. At the extreme end, disrespect can lead to abuse or harm of older people, having a significant impact on the older person’s health and wellbeing.

To prevent elder abuse from happening in the first place, it’s important that we build communities and a society where all people, regardless of age, feel valued, safe and respected.

A case of elder abuse: ‘Brenda’ came to ECLC after she sold her house and loaned most of the proceeds to her son ‘Grant’ to build a house with a granny flat. She hoped this would help Grant out and allow her to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Details of the loan agreement were not written down.

Brenda found living with Grant more challenging than she expected. He had regular angry outbursts for no reason. Their relationship broke down when Grant got angry with Brenda about her grandparenting style and he said she couldn’t see her grandchildren unsupervised.

Grant refused to go to family counselling or mediation, and also refused to sign an agree-

ment about repayment of the loan. Instead of repaying the loan, Grant took out a mortgage on the property to purchase other properties.

Brenda decided that she could no longer live at the property with Grant. She now lives in an apartment provided by a community housing service.

Help from ROSE: Brenda’s housing worker referred her to ROSE for help. The ROSE team lodged a caveat over the property; this was to protect Brenda’s interest in the home. ROSE is also negotiating a payment plan with Grant to recover the money Brenda lent to him. The ROSE team continues to provide ongoing legal, social and financial counselling support to Brenda.

Rogue wave on horizon Focal Point Graeme Dawson Not long after I last wrote, our streets were deserted, rows of shops closed, whole shopping precincts in real trouble with many shops possibly unable to re-open when restrictions are fully lifted.

Recently we saw a classic photo in the press taken in one of our iconic Melbourne streets – silent – not a person or vehicle in sight – eerie.

It reminded me of scenes in the international movie, ‘On the Beach’ starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, set in Melbourne in 1956, where they were trying to portray the desolation of the end of the world.

On that subject we recently saw Prince William on TV bringing together great environmentalists and world identities to promote the cause of ‘saving our planet’.

I have no doubt that the planet itself will survive, given what I know of its creator and sustainer, but it may be more about whether humans pollute it so badly that they and the animal life may be in danger.

The fear of the unknown on this subject raises a lot of anxiety amongst us because we are still in the midst of one of the greatest pandemics this world has experienced.

Last month I went in quite hard, warning of the repercussions of negative ways of living together under pressure, but also offering ways through, and out of those troubles.

To reinforce my concern of relationships failing, I heard a Justice of the Peace saying that there were an unusually high number of people coming to him to get a Stat-Dec signed to start the divorce process. Statisticians say that applications to the courts for divorce are up 30%.

Family lawyer/counsellor, Caroline Counsel, said that the tragic innocents in all these family break ups are the children – they have no say and have to hear and witness the constant conflict, and in my experience as a former clinical counsellor, they were the ones coming to me in their thirties, in trouble. They were damaged.

Professor George Patton, of the Murdock Children’s Research Institute, reported that there was a marked increase in teenage anxiety.

Even the front page of the 11 October Sunday Herald Sun carried a headline referring to the anger over the long lock down - screaming in bold black 40mil letters, ‘STIR CRAZY’.

Finally, I was shocked when one of many learned practitioners who are seeing such an increase in poor mental health, said, ’But we haven’t seen the tsunami yet’.

How do we get through this constructively?

– This third wave - the psychological one.

When asked, ‘How do you eat an elephant?’

Answer, ‘One bite at a time’.

An old Chinese proverb, says, ‘A journey of a thousand steps starts with one’.

The Anglican minister in Healesville, Matt, in his article in this paper on the 13th, talked about many more people now going to God in prayer for help, when all else seems to be failing.

Even last week I had a man ring me for help; lonely, single, aged, and drinking himself to sleep every night with scotch.

I also know that one answer is to get our minds off our own demise and focus on someone else who needs help.

John Kennedy, former Hawthorn Football Coach, is remembered for a famous speech to his team – part of which I will try to recall.

‘Do something, do, don’t think, don’t hope. Just do something, then at least you can say, ‘I did something’.

However in our current dilemma, I believe we still need to think and hope. Helping ourselves, helping others and with God’s help we will get through this.

Tall tales from the past In amongst the collection at the Upper Yarra Museum is a photograph of two elephants hauling carts along the main street of Warburton. I often have people ask the question, where did they keep the elephants?

As a member of the Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society you get to hear many stories and various interpretations of the same story.

Some people will tell a story hoping you believe what they say, and others will tell a story believing what they are saying is true.

Two stories about two elephants. The first one is that they apparently came from a circus in Drouin and were purchased by a local timber merchant in Warburton, and were brought through Cockatoo (assumed) up to here. They were supposedly used for timber haulage in Warburton. The story goes that one was buried at the Golf Course (8th hole) and the other at the Alpine Retreat.

The other story is that the elephants were rescued when they were left behind by Ashton’s circus on the Warburton Football Ground, because they couldn’t feed them. There wasn’t even enough food to feed the mill horses because of the 1930s depression. The elephants worked for Federal Mills hauling timber. Apparently a policeman at the Alpine Hotel tried to stop a group of angry loggers who felt the elephants were pulling more logs than their trucks, and wanted to go out and shoot the elephants. There was a big brawl and they were on a mission. They shot one of the elephants just outside the hotel, and that hump in front of the hotel is where the elephant is buried.

The other elephant was taken to the Warburton Golf Club, and hidden up at the eighth hole. The loggers tracked it and they went up there and shot it. The elephant is buried there.

As good as these stories sound and the similarities, it however defies the logic of the photograph and history.

The photograph shows two elephants hauling carts along the main road of Warburton outside the shops. The photograph dates from the 1930s (during the depression years) and does not show logs or freshly sawn timber the sawmillers would have had.

From my research there were visits from the Wirth’s Circus train during these times, with December 1936 being one reported date.

Wirth’s Circus was the only circus to have moved around the country by train, and upon arriving at Warburton, the train would have been stabled at the Warburton station up on the hill. The La La timber sidings down by the football ground, at this period in time, were

To get the circus equipment down to the football ground it needed to be loaded onto carts and transported via the main street.

The photograph shows the carts as being of the same design that appears in other circus photographs taken in other parts of Victoria, meaning that they are standard equipment for the circus. The load on the cart in the foreground does not look like anything that the sawmillers would be carting, but has similarities to the terrace seating boards that circuses are known for. As for the Federal Mill theory, why would they need elephants when they had a tramway running from their mills using rail tractors, which were cheaper to ‘feed’.

However that does not discredit the fact

that the elephants could have been left behind, which I doubt would have happened, for elephants would not be cheap to replace.

And how does the circus unload and load up at the next stop. The labourers could not lift such quantities and many horses would probably be too expensive to look after than a couple of elephants. And has anybody thought about the idea of digging a hole to find out how true these stories could be?

As a postscript, just to add to the charm, this is my theory of what do you do with two elephants at the football ground. Put them to good use of course.

The elephants could have been kept on the football ground because it was one of the few places that would have been fenced. The Warburton football ground during football season is well known for its quagmire type surface

with many games in the mud, and with two elephants grazing on the soft ground and the manure well mixed in with the mud it is easy to see why football teams left the ground all wearing the same colours.

In summer time the ground would have a good grassy surface for the cricket season. The elephants would then be walked up and down the cricket pitch area to compact the ground into a hard surface to play on. (Maybe that’s what the MCG needs.) The cricketers would be pleased and thankful they did not play football. After the cricket season it was back to grazing and mud.

Halloween on The Green is nowhere to be seen

By Romy Stephens Despite Halloween on the Green being cancelled this year, event organisers are encouraging families to still dress up and celebrate the occasion.

To compensate for the traditional Le Pine Funerals Mayors Parade that will be missed this year, Councillors from Yarra Ranges Council still got into the spooky spirit of things on 22 October.

Mayor Richard Higgins and Cr Tim Heenan got dressed up with Halloween on the Green creator Andrew Fillip-Gautier, entertainment director Rosalind Mackay and more to mark the event.

Mr Fillip-Gautier said Halloween on the Green, which is hosted by the Philanthropic Collective, will be “back in all its gory glory next year, with the emphasis on how death is celebrated through various religions and cultures.”

“It seems cruel to have to wait another year but that’s just what we will have to do as the team works to bring you even more hidden surprises on the day,” he said.

Mr Fillip-Gautier encouraged families to still celebrate Halloween this week.

“Sadly, Halloween on the Green will take a bow for 2020 but that doesn’t mean you still can’t dress up and celebrate the day at home with family, and perfect your costume for the best dressed,” he said.

Halloween on the Green is an annual fundraising event for local schools up on Mount Dandenong.

It is sponsored by Yarra Ranges Council and will take place at Ferny Creek Reserve on Sunday 31 October next year.

Getting back in the swing Residents across the Yarra Ranges have experienced their first sense of freedom since August, with Covid-19 restrictions easing to allow for tennis, golf and the re-opening of skateparks last week.

The real estate industry was shut down, inspections prohibited and offices not allowed to open. We were fortunate that our business operates from home, however having previously owned larger businesses with commercial offices and staff, we know this would have been an anxious time for our colleagues in the industry.

So what’s happening in the market now?

Spring is normally quite busy with a lot of listing and selling activity. The Covid restrictions created additional demand from buyers with very little in the way of homes coming to market. Now that private appointments have resumed the pent-up buyer demand is higher than I have seen in my 35 years in real estate.

Advice for buyers Be quick, be decisive, have all your ducks in a row. If required have finance ready to go or pre-approved and know your financial limits. It is quite likely in this environment there will be more than one offer on a property and quite common for the agent to advise you to place your best offer straight up.

Advice for sellers Despite the restrictions, 2020 has flown by.

With only 2 months until Christmas if you’re serious about selling, now’s the time to act.

Traditionally conveyancers/solicitors are either closed or working reduced capacity from just prior to Christmas to mid-January so an unconditional sale prior to Christmas would be ideal.

As for what the market will do next year?

Paving the way forward

That’s the saying guiding revered community sporting figure Marg Jones in her role as part of AFL Outer East’s new women’s advisory group.

The newly-formed group is made up of a number of key figures from within clubland across the region, as well as region general manager Aaron Bailey and Nicole Kimpton and Josette O’Donnell from Eastern Health.

AFL Outer East’s finance officer Sheryn Harbert is also part of the group, along with a number of the most influential ladies from within clubland across the region - including Jones, Bec St Mart from Cranbourne, AnneMarie Ebbels from the Healesville juniors, Mount Evelyn’s Sue Harty, and Broadford Football Netball Club president Bonnie Cavanagh.

More than half of all participants in the region’s competitions are female, and the advisory group aims to promote the involvement - and development - of women in leadership roles within clubs.

“Creating inclusive environments for females in our competitions and our region needs to extend past participation on game day,” Bailey explained.

“We are committed to ensuring we create opportunities for women to take senior leadership roles, both committee and coaching.

“With over 50 per cent of our participants being female, this is a responsibility we take really seriously.

“This is a wonderful initiative and we thank our current female leaders and Eastern Health for embracing and driving a program such as this that provides increased opportunity and ongoing support for the women of Outer East.”

Jones’ involvement over a long period of time at Pakenham is the stuff of legend, but she’d be the last to admit that.

Like so many others throughout the region, she’s far more interested in rolling the sleeves up and furthering her club and her community in the sporting space.

“This is a wonderful initiative by AFL Outer East, and I feel very honoured to be invited to participate and represent Pakenham, and (have) the opportunity, personally, to work with this inspiring group of women,” she said.

“With the growing profile of women’s sport,

Bonnie Cavanagh. and the momentum only increasing, I personally think it is important for the young, talented girls and women coming through grassroots community sport on and off the field and court to see role models around them.

“I personally love the saying: ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’.

“I have been on committees since I was 18 and over my 39 years have seen many changes.

“One of the aims of this advisory board is to raise the profile of women in the league and promote inclusion.

“I congratulate Aaron Bailey and his team at AFL Outer East on looking at gender equality across the league, in particular in roles of leadership. The potential and opportunity here is inspiring.”

Cavanagh, a proud Aboriginal woman, already has an impressive reputation in Outer East circles - despite Broadford not yet having taken to the region’s courts or fields.

And it’s easy to see why.

“The league is very proactive in a number of areas and they’ve been wanting to raise the profile of women within the league, and promote female inclusion - finding a way that you can address matters that are affecting female footballers and netballers, and also the volunteers around the league,” she explained.

“I think the concept is a great show of leadership and it’s a genuine means of increasing female participation.

Despite being new to the AFL Outer East set-up, Broadford - and club president Bonnie Cavanagh - have already made a strong impression on the region.

Pictures: SUPPLIED “It doesn’t matter if someone is young, or a woman, or from a different background - everyone should have an opportunity to have their say or some input so they can genuinely contribute to their clubs.

“With this group, we’ve got the opportunity to give advice that’s actually taken on board.

This isn’t just a box ticking exercise for diversity - this is very genuine, and there’s a very real opportunity to bring in some great ideas and events.”

The women’s advisory group is set to support AFL Outer East in developing a gender equality policy, advising the commission on matters affecting women and girls, and priorities for the 2021 season.

AFL Outer East’s commitment to inclusion has also extended to the all abilities space, with the region inviting its clubs to become ‘All Abilities Centres’ moving forward.

This is set to include information sessions for families within the region, explaining what’s on offer.

“We’ve come into the league as a new club (in 2020), and what I’ve found really impressive is that when they’re making decisions that directly impact on a particular group, they’re making sure that the right people are at the table when those decisions are made.

“If you’re trying to make it equal, don’t make it about one group over another.

“My passion is diversity and inclusion, and if you’re trying to have a good, broad understanding that’s reflective of your community, you really need to have a really good commitment to making sure you’ve got a diverse group that’s very inclusive.

“You never know what people’s backgrounds or talents may include. It’s about giving people a safe platform to get the confidence to show what they can bring to the table.”

Cavanagh said she’s proud to be involved in an initiative that empowers people - whoever they may be, regardless of background or gender - to take a more active role in how their clubs and competitions are run and led.

Dr Tucker streaks away in Great Chase for charity Greyhound racing’s 2020 TAB Great Chase Grand Final may have looked different to the 22 community groups from across Victoria that watched the race via a private Zoom link, but all the excitement and adrenaline that the Grand Final brings to The Meadows each year was still very apparent.

The Great Chase Grand Final traditionally draws more than 500 people to the racetrack for what is a wonderful celebration, however crowds are currently not allowed on course because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, groups which attended last year’s Grand Final still had the chance to win a share in $24,000 prize money, including a top prize of $10,000 for the group paired with the winning greyhound.

A random draw took place partnering the eight competing greyhounds with eight of the community groups - all of whom belong to Victoria’s disability sector.

Coming in first place was promising greyhound Dr. Tucker, trained at Darriman by Bill McMahon, who was partnered with Wood ‘n’ Crete Products, an organisation which centres around providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

The organisation’s product coordinator, Russell Streeter was thrilled by the result.

Since 2003 GRV has donated more than $650,000 to community organisations that care for intellectually or physically disabled people through the Great Chase, with the event being supported by TAB since 2008.
