The step up into school Moving with your child from early learning into primary school comes with new adventures and opportunities.

Taking the first step into school is a milestone that can be accompanied by many questions. When change comes, it is not always easy to navigate and children need support as they move from infancy to independence.

To provide the most supportive and nurturing process for families moving into Prep, Heritage College offers a pathway to primary school called ‘Step into Prep’. The program provides a helpful information session for parents in a relaxed environment where families can meet their child’s educator with plenty of time for questions and answers.

If you are considering Prep for your child at Heritage College, we invite you to attend orientation days in Term 3. Orientation days allow incoming Prep students to view the classroom spaces, meet their teacher and classmates and familiarise themselves with learning areas and activities. On the hop: Positive approach to keep the kids active

By Danielle Kutchel As we once again switch to online learning, it can be difficult to balance the range of subjects that kids are exposed to each day.

And with so much to fit into one day, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important aspects of the curriculum: physical education.

But PE at home doesn’t have to be stuffy and regulated. Consider slipping it in as part of the day and you’ll be well on your way to ticking those education boxes!

MAKE IT FUN We hear often from people who say they ’hated PE at school’, with many looking to drop it the moment they could. Meanwhile, the mean PE teacher has become a movie trope.

The answer? Make PE great again by injecting a bit of fun into the routine. PE doesn’t just have to be a class game of cricket or following the provided curriculum in regimented steps.

Invent games for your kids or make it competitive: who can jump the highest? Who can

Think outside the box when it comes to PE. run the furthest? What’s the latest crazy TikTok dance routine - see what the kids can do with it! Think about what games and sports your kids prefer and encourage them to keep those up. Older children, for example, might like

to go for a bike ride or run. For younger kids, break out the chalk and draw some hopscotch on the pavement outside for an outsidethe-box activity. Don’t forget to use what the school has provided. They will have ideas and

suggestions for you and there will, of course, be certain tasks the students need to complete, but that’s no excuse for a boring lesson.

MAKE IT INCIDENTAL Your kids are used to going out at lunch and burning off some steam. Don’t let them become couch potatoes just because they’re learning from home. Schedule lunch time in for a consistent o’clock each day and make that the time you head outside. If there’s nothing prepared for lunch, get the kids to jump on their scooters or bikes and head to the shops not only does this ensure they get their physical activity quote up for the day, but it doubles as an excuse to get some chores done! You can even use PE to break up the day. Finished that maths task? Celebrate with 20 star jumps to get the blood pumping before you get back into the books.

MAKE IT REAL Don’t be afraid to ask for help! If you’re struggling, get in touch with your child’s PE teacher and ask for advice. They’re there to support you and they’d probably be grateful to hear from you and get an update on their students.

Going from good to great The Minaret College community are excitedly preparing to open their third campus in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.

With existing campuses in Springvale and Officer, including early learning centres as well as primary and secondary schools, the third campus in Doveton will be dedicated to primary students.

Doveton Campus will be led by a longstanding member of staff and trusted member of the community, Fairooza Gaffar.

Minaret College was established in 1992 by Mohamed Hassan OAM. Mr Hassan saw the need for young Muslim Australians to be surrounded in an environment which caters for their academic, emotional and religious development.

The college continues to be inspired by Mr Hassan’s legacy - to produce students with a healthy Australian Muslim identity, which is connected, conscious, sincere to its traditions and committed to excellence, good citizenship and compassionate service to humanity.

Since its humble beginnings of 20 student enrolments and one classroom teacher, the college now serves the educational needs of over 2000 students and employs approximately 300 dedicated staff.

The college has grown thanks to the ongoing support of the local community, continued sense of family and outstanding academic results.

In 2019, 14 of the 92 VCE graduates achieved an ATAR above 80 percent - five of those students above 90 percent. The Dux of the college, Nour Refae achieved an ATAR of 97.65, which included the prestigious achievement of a perfect study score for one subject.

Ninety-eight percent of graduates who submitted an application for tertiary education received an offer.

Start with confidence Year 7 students at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School experience a confident start to secondary school through one of the most comprehensive transition programs in Gippsland, which commences in Year 6 no matter which primary school students attend.

The St Paul’s Year 7 Transition Program aims to create a smooth transition from primary to secondary school and focuses on making students feel comfortable with their new learning environment both physically and socially, well before Year 7 commences.

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, mental health is moving into focus as an equally important health issue.

Children and young people aren’t immune to the mental health impact of the pandemic.

According to Victoria’s Department of Education and Training website, it’s normal for our kids to show signs of distress.

The website lists common reactions, including: fear and anxiety anger and frustration confusion sadness denial The Education Department provides a number of resources for parents including information on how to have a conversation with your child about the virus.

Tips provided come from the Raising Children website and include finding a time to share with your child where you can give them your full attention, and explaining the facts to them clearly and in a way that they can understand.

The website also recommends paying attention to how your child is feeling, and provides reassurance that it’s OK to switch off the news and have a break.

There are external support services that you can reach out to if you need help.Headspace provides targeted support for young people on a range of issues their website, headspace.org.au

Hello, I’m Brendan Kelly, executive principal at Rivercrest and Hillcrest Christian Colleges. We recognise these are extraordinary times and we want all our families to know that their school is looking out for them and their children.

All of our teachers and staff have been working very hard to ensure that every single student receives a teaching and learning programme of the highest possible standard.

We all hope that this pandemic will be over soon, but while it is with us, we must respond appropriately. However, we also want to create a learning programme that engages all students and ensures that they continue to thrive in their learning.

Students right across Hillcrest and Rivercrest have been actively engaged in daily learning. An example that springs to mind recently is the preps celebrating 100 days of learning, whereby the teachers and students dressed up in olden days clothes. Many new initiatives and challenges have also evolved where students are encouraged to take on weekly challenges. One such challenge was for the students to take a photo outside of something interesting and particularly beautiful.

The goal was for some enjoyment but also to gather some great samples of student learning and celebrate these. There are also many exciting building and staffing developments coming over the next few weeks.

Ease children into school

By Melissa Grant Starting school is a momentous occasion in a child’s life. It’s a major milestone for children and their parents, and one that’s filled with a mix of emotions.

To help make the transition as smooth as possible, there are many things mums and dads can do to prepare their child.

Emeritus Professor Bob Perry is an education expert in transitions, having developed a guide featuring multiple case studies experienced by parents, teachers and kids during the transition to school.

Prof Perry says while beginning primary school can be a challenge, most children find it enjoyable.“Children of that age want to grow up - they see excitement in growing up and they want school to be different. So we shouldn’t worry that it is different as the kids want it that way,” he explains.

The move from kindergarten to primary school, he says, is all more about a child’s social and emotional development, rather than academic.

Here, Prof Perry shares his top tips to help a child prepare for primary school.

TALK: Start talking to your children about school. This includes talking about the school itself, what it was like when you went to school, what’s changed since you went to school and what it will be like for your child to go to school. Ask your child about what’s

concerning them and what are they looking forward to? Like most people, children will bottle things up unless they are specifically asked about them. For example, the child may be particularly worried about the playground sometimes playgrounds can be a bit daunting.

MANAGING EXPECTATIONS: The key is being honest, even if you didn’t particularly like school. Parents can talk about some of the positive things that did happen when they were at school. Be honest about it, but make sure you know what will happen when they go to school. For example, I know some parents who talk about children lining up before going into classroom - this doesn’t happen at some schools anymore. If child sees that doesn’t happen then the parent loses some credibility with the child. It’s important for parents to talk to the principal or teacher about what happens in that particular school.

Another thing is many children wish they’d known before their first day is that everyone wears a school uniform. We often make a big deal about getting their uniform but forget to tell them everyone will be dressed the same.

LUNCH BOXES: Buy a lunch box and check your child can open it. There seems to be a tendency to buy the latest superhero lunchbox or whatever the trend is, but the critical thing is that your child can actually open it. Talk to your child about having lunch at school and be sure to tell them that you don’t eat everything

at once! Also make sure you can pack lunches that don’t require wrap or foil, so that the kids don’t have trouble unwrapping their food.

TOILETS: Going to public toilets is critical for both boys and girls. School toilets are different to home toilets and preschool toilets. While school toilets have improved a great deal, they aren’t as sparkling clean as the toilet at home or at kindy. And, for the first time, kids will have to make a choice about whether they go to the boys toilets or girls toilets - they need to know about that. For boys it is important they know that there are different ways of going to toilet other than standing over a bowl. These are the practical things.

PLAYGROUND PRACTICE: Take your child to big public spaces. Take them to the park and let them play on the playground equipment.

Schools have playgrounds that are bigger than they are used to with more people in them and less adults per child. The children need to have experience around these things. While you are there take them to the toilet!

MEET AND GREET: Before the school year begins, every parent should take their child to the school to meet the principal and the potential teacher. It’s important to take your child with you as you want them to feel a sense of belonging. You need to know the teacher, so you don’t have to get on the phone and start introducing yourself if there’s a problem.

By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham teacher has successfully welcomed home a seizure alert dog - and a new best mate - for his teenage son.

The quest to secure Lulu the support dog from Queensland has been anything but simple for Beaconhills College teacher Scott Wallace and his wife Tracy.

The pair’s 14-year-old son, Cody, was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour and excess fluid on the brain over a decade ago. He has since undergone multiple brain surgeries but still lives with constant seizures.

Two years ago, Cody had his first nocturnal seizure, which prompted his parents to install monitors and cameras in his room, which would alert them of any movement.

“All the things we have in place, a power cut would render them useless,” Mr Wallace explained.

In search of a more permanent solution, the family began raising money for a seizure alert dog two years ago, and were lucky to enough to reach their target, thanks to an outpouring wave of support from the community.

Seizure alert dogs like Lulu don’t come cheap, costing $30,000 for initial training and more than $5000 a year to maintain training, diet and overall health.

But in this instance the results outweigh the costs, and after an exhausting and stressful process hindered by the coronavirus pandemic, Lulu has finally stepped foot in her forever home.

Mr Wallace was granted an exemption to travel to Queensland with his wife and Cody in mid-July, to undertake extensive training with Lulu as part of the SmartPup program.

Covid-19 restrictions cancelled Cody’s first support dog in March, and the family feared that an even stricter Stage 4 lockdown could push Lulu out of the picture as well.

“We had to break the news that his first dog was out of the equation and when it looked like his second dog was going to be gone, it would have just devastated him,” Mr Wallace explained.

“We were really privileged to be allowed to travel up. My wife worked hard, back and forth with the Queensland Government and we were one of the lucky ones that got to quarantine in the accommodation of our choice.”

The trio spent the mandatory two weeks quarantine in an Air BnB - where Mr Wallace was able to continue teaching his classes via Zoom - before undertaking five days of intense training with Lulu.

access training in shopping centres and food courts, Lulu was given the green light to relocate to Victoria.

“It was full on. They try to make the training as tough as can be, so when you can handle the tough stuff, the everyday stuff becomes easier,” he explained.

“They’re initially trained to a certain standard and then SmartPups begin to look at the specifics. We had to keep sending up clothes with Cody’s scent on them, which allowed them to pick the dog that responded most positively.

“When Lulu first met Cody, she greeted him with a lot of kisses, which was a bit overwhelming, but she probably recognised him because she had been working with his scent.”

Now becoming familiar with her forever home, the family is in the process of transitioning Lulu from her crate to Cody’s bed.

“My wife and I haven’t properly slept since that night when he had his first seizure,” Mr Wallace said.

“Knowing that Cody has a companion who can detect the slightest change in his health will definitely have a positive impact on our entire family moving forward.”

In the meantime, the bond between Lulu and Cody is continuing to grow stronger every day.

“Kids with special needs often don’t show emotions, but he’s really warming to her,” he added.

By Jessica Anstice Construction is set to begin on the Cardinia Motorsports Complex within the next six to 12 months, after councillors voted unanimously in favour of the Stage 1 planning permit.

Stage 1 of the world class motorsports complex will see a 3.6 kilometre FIM/FIA graded race track - capable of accomodating V8 Supercars and Formula 1 training - built on a block of vacant land located down McGregor Road in Pakenham.

A planning application for stage 1 of the project was officially approved at a general Cardinia Shire Council meeting on Monday 17 August, which ultimately gave project developer Podium 1 the nod of approval to go ahead with construction.

Once complete, Podium 1 will have invested more than $200 million into the state-ofthe-art sporting facility.

“We are ecstatic with the result last night,” Podium 1 Chief Operations Officer Felicity Richardson said.

“It is a great outcome for the Podium 1 team after three extensive years of work.”

Future stages of the project include a trackside 70 room hotel, a driver education experience centre, a 900 metre go-karting circuit and even a clay shooting range.

“In relation to the hotel that’s coming in future stages, that is so important because we need accomodation options,” Cr Owen said.

“A $200 million investment - I think that this is great for our shire.

“Think about the investment in jobs and that is so important to our community.”

There are three stages as part of the com-

plex, with the remaining two to be applied for in subsequent planning permits.

All three stages of works are estimated to take a total of 2.5 years to complete.

Before works can commence, the developer will need to remove 9.37 hectares of native vegetation.

“I know there were concerns about native vegetation removal,” Cr Brett Owen said at the meeting.

“I believe the proposed condition report does address those concerns, same with the noise.”

Sitting within 1.5 kilometres from Pakenham’s residential outer-rim, the future facility has drawn concerns from a number of residents.

“The reality is this track is going to be within 1.5 to 1.8 kilometres of residential homes and that is a significant impact if you consider some of the operating times on this,” Cr Michael Schilling said.

“I believe council need to be incredibly proactive in making sure these plans sound and also making sure it is going to have minimal impact on the local residents.”

Casey Council has launched a $510,000 support package to provide a range of resources, tailored support and grants to local businesses directly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Adopted at council’s 18 August meeting, the Backing Business in Casey package aims to support local businesses by boosting their long-term recovery efforts, increasing business capabilities and creating a stronger and more resilient local economy.

Informed by insights collected from council’s Covid-19 Business Impacts Survey conducted in April and May, the package is designed to complement the Victorian and Federal Government business stimulus packages, address limi-

tations in other programs and provide support to Casey businesses who have otherwise been excluded.

The Business Grant Program is just one initiative of the package that allows eligible businesses in Casey to apply for a share of a $200,000 grant pool. Businesses may apply for one of five types, ranging from $2000 to $5000.

The grants have been designed to support local businesses directly impacted by Covid-19 by providing catalyst funding for projects and activities that will boost long term business and economic recovery.

Casey Council chair of administrators Noelene Duff was proud to see council launch an-

other program that caters to local businesses’ diverse needs.

“Over the past few months, we have seen incredible resilience, agility and innovation across Casey’s business community, however, it remains a challenging time for many and Council is committed to providing support that meets our local businesses’ varying needs” Ms Duff said. “This package is a welcomed addition to complement the support council is already providing Casey businesses since the beginning of this pandemic.”

The fourth phase of Cardinia Shire Council’s package to support community members and businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic has been released.

Phase 4 of the $1.6 million Community and Business Support Package features specific measures to reduce financial pressures on ratepayers, community groups, sporting clubs and businesses.

For ratepayers, a further extension to the interest-free period for unpaid rates payments until 31 March 2021 will be put in place.

The hardship provisions and payment plans for 20-21 rates will be continued, as will be rebate for health care card holders and/or people receiving JobSeeker payments.

In terms of sporting clubs and recreation reserves, tenancy fees for all council-owned facilities will be waived for a further six months.Financial support will be offered to sporting committees of management having trouble paying utility bills, plus a temporary freeze on all debt repayments.As for community groups, a support payment will be made to all neighbourhood houses, senior citizen’s centres, U3As, and to Emerald Museum.

Emergency rent waivers will be available to all eligible tenants of councilowned buildings and financial support will be offered for community halls.

Local businesses will receive a full refund of all 2020 Food Act and Public Health and Wellbeing Act registration fees, as well as a refund on 2020-21 street trading permit fees.Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Jeff Springfield said the council hoped the measures would provide welcome relief to ratepayers, community groups and businesses struggling with the significant impacts of the pandemic.

“With Stage 4 restrictions now in place and many businesses having to close or restrict their operations as a result, there are many people in our community doing it really tough right now,” he said.

“As a community, we’re in circumstances we never could have anticipated.

“Council wants to help reduce that financial pressure and we hope these Phase 4 measures will help to do that.”

Cr Springfield said the council has a range of support measures available to those under financial pressure at this time.”For ratepayers struggling to meet their rates payments, the extension of the interest free period until the end of 2020 will provide some relief,” he added.

CFA’s hoax call warning

By Mitchell Clarke The Pakenham CFA has been forced to issue a warning to the community, after emergency service crews responded to a series of hoax calls.

The warning was prompted after an incident in the early hours of Saturday morning, 15 August, where emergency services were called out to the same Pakenham address on five separate occasions.

It’s understood the incident was eventually rectified by police, but Pakenham CFA captain Michael Corzelius said each call out took away vital resources.

“There’s nothing worse than getting out of bed at 3am in the morning for a hoax call,” he said.

“At the end of the day, we’re there for our community and if they need us, they’ll call us and we’ll be there to respond.

“Generally we understand that people have concerns, especially in these struggling times, but we want to ensure that our resources are being sent to genuine calls and actual emergencies.”

Captain Corzelius said firefighters, on average, would spend about an hour of every call waiting for police and ambulance to attend and resolve the situation.

He said hoax calls reduced the ability for emergency services to respond to real time emergencies.

“Our resources are limited so we need to make sure we’re available for legitimate calls,” Capt Corzelius said.

“We won’t stop responding to calls, we have

“Nuisance calls are calls that can take triple zero operators away from genuine emergencies, such as calling for a non-emergency like a prank, asking who won the football or not knowing where you placed the keys,” an ESTA spokesperson said.

“Our call-takers understand calling triple zero can often be an outlet for people who

are lonely or anxious and have nobody else to talk to - our call-takers answer all calls and are empathetic to callers - but it’s important to remember that triple zero is for emergencies only.

“What might seem like harmless fun calling triple zero could delay a call from someone in a life threatening situation.”

Police appeal following suspicious phone tower fire

By Brendan Rees Counter-terrorism police have appealed to the public as they continue investigations into a suspicious fire at a mobile phone tower in Cranbourne West in May. Emergency services were called to the tower near Parnell Court shortly after 1.30am on Friday, 22 May. Firefighters from Cranbourne and Frankston fire brigades brought the blaze under control just before 2am before Arson and Explosives investigators attended the scene later that morning and deemed the fire to be suspicious.

Police have released an image of a Holden Commodore sedan that was seen in the area prior to the fire.

The vehicle was driving without headlights on in the vicinity of Parnell Court and police are keen to identify the driver or registered owner of the vehicle.

Images and close-circuit television have been released of the tower fire and vehicle in the hope someone can provide any information that can assist investigators.

Donut run leads to charges

Heartbreak for home builders

A driver with a suspended licence has been caught breaking lockdown restrictions in Narre Warren, telling police he was going to buy donuts with three mates on Saturday 15 August.

Public Order Response Team (PORT) officers had been patrolling when they noticed a car wouldn’t pass or drive alongside their vehicle on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road about 7.40pm.

A check of the car identified the registered owner to be a suspended driver, police say.

The car was intercepted and the driver, who wasn’t the registered owner, was also found to be allegedly suspended.

Police allege the probationary driver, who wasn’t displaying any ‘p’ plates, explained he had his three mates in the car as they were going to buy donuts.

Due to the drivers suspended licence status the vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1019.85.

The 24-year-old Narre Warren driver is expected to be charged on summons with driving while suspended and failing to display ‘p’ plates.

The driver and his three passengers, a 19-year-old from Narre Warren, 21-year-old from Hallam and a 20-year-old from Hampton Park, were also found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer and each issued a $1652 fine.

The directions by the Chief Health Officer, under the State of Emergency declared in Victoria, have been enacted to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Victorians have been scammed out of more than $10 million already this year as identity theft rises during the coronavirus lockdown.

New Scamwatch data, released by the State Government, showed more people were being conned this year - with a loss of almost $2m in the past eight months compared to all of last year.

Speaking at the start of Scams Awareness Week (17-21 August), Minister for Consumer Affairs Melissa Horne said said being mindful of who people give their details to has never been more important, given the huge number of people stay-at-home due to coronavirus restrictions.

“Our growing use of technology gives scammers more opportunities to trick you into giving away your personal or financial information - people need to be careful and report any suspected scams to police,” Ms Horne said. “It’s appalling that anyone would use this situation to take advantage of someone, but we all need to do our part to protect our safety online.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) deputy chair Delia Rickard said scammers were increasingly taking advantage of the financial difficulties and uncertainty generated from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are seeing two main types of scams

impersonating government departments; fake government threats and phishing scams,” she said. “Both of these scams can be quite convincing and can lead to significant financial losses or even identity theft.”

Phishing scams are attempts by scammers to trick people into giving out personal information such as their bank account numbers, passwords and credit card numbers.

After jail, calls for reform

By Tess Kelly A former gambling addict who was jailed for stealing money has joined a chorus of voices to call for gambling reform in the City of Casey.

In a submission to the council, Carolyn Crawford begged the City of Casey to join the Alliance for Gambling Reform after her gambling addiction led to her being imprisoned in 2016.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform is a collaboration of organisations and local councils that aims to reform the gambling industry to reduce the harm it causes, particularly in local communities.

Ms Crawford was charged with stealing $400,000 from her previous employer over a period of seven years. She used the money to play the poker machines in the Casey area.

“I had become addicted ... the money I took went into those dreaded machines,” she said.

Ms Crawford said gambling in Casey is at an extremely dangerous level with hotels and clubs operating for 20 hours per day, prior to Covid-19.

“It’s just awful and really needs to improve.”

By joining the alliance, Ms Crawford said the council would have more power to slow and stop the increase of poker machines being installed at gambling venues.

“If we can all fight this battle and at least stop one person ending up the same as me I would be very happy.”

The alliance’s executive director Tony Mohr has called for the City of Casey to join the alliance as a leadership council, working alongside 22 other local councils to advocate for state and national gambling reform.

“No level of government is closer to the devastation poker machines cause than the local council,” he said.

Mr Mohr said gambling is especially devastating in the City of Casey with $132 million

being lost to these machines per year. This is the second highest loss for any council area in Victoria, falling just behind the City of Brimbank.

The alliance is seeking $25,000 from the City

of Casey to fund support to councils to prevent gambling harm, and continue research and awareness for its damaging effects.

“The alliance also works with leadership councils on local priorities such as community

education, improving council policy and raising awareness of gambling harm through local advocacy,” Mr Mohr said.

Ms Crawford said, if the City of Casey were to join the alliance, it would show they cared for their residents.

“Any council fighting the battle against any increase in pokies in the area should be very proud of themselves and I hold any council doing this very warmly in my heart,” she said.

Alliance board member Tom Cummings also fell victim to gambling in Casey when he relapsed in 2014.

Mr Cummings said venues in the area would offer cheap bistro meals with gambling as the “after dinner entertainment”.

Mr Cummings said the gambling problem in Casey was largely to do with financial pressures on young families living in new developments.

“Financial pressure can take its toll ... the machines themselves are inherently unsafe and prey upon the most vulnerable members of our society,” he said.

If the City of Casey were to join as a leadership council, Mr Cummings said the alliance would provide resources and guidance when dealing with applications for poker machines and provide strong community support for those suffering from the harms.

As a member of the leadership council, City of Frankston councillor Glenn Aitken said the alliance had provided them with detailed research to help the fight against poker machines in Frankston.

He encouraged every council in Victoria to join the alliance, not only the City of Casey.

“It needs to be a really big voice and a widespread voice on the issue of gambling to deal with it.”

The City of Casey and several gaming venues in the area were contacted for comment but declined to respond.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency.

Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course.

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training.

She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated.

"I still owe everything to having those skills," she said.

"The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers.

"It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared."

The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham.

Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries.

Hearts to help

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east.

Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency.

In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities.

Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances.

Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old.

She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible.

"I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said.

"Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives.

"I love what I do - waking up and making a difference."

Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant.

Crusaders against violence

By Jessica Anstice Two outstanding men have been recognised for their continued efforts in raising awareness and preventing violence against women and in the Cardinia Shire.

Men and women from across the shire united as one through an online livestream of the White Ribbon relaunch in Cardinia Shire hosted by White Ribbon Australia, Cardinia Shire Council, Outlook Victoria and Aligned Leisure on Thursday 13 August.

Traditionally, two prestigious awards were given to worthy recipients who play a large role in the fight against violence towards women.

The awards were created in recognition of Tony Fitzgerald and Gary McQuillian’s work in preventing violence against women.

“As male role model leaders and legacy, they created for us the focus on this in the Cardinia Shire and respective organisations,” Aligned Leisure group operations manager Simon Bryson said.

“Having met these two gentlemen before, I can tell you they’re outstanding men.”

The Tony Fitzgerald Award was presented to Sikh Australian Support for Family Violence founder and director Jasbir Singh Suropada for his remarkable commitment to ending domestic violence.

Among the many organisations and communities that Mr Suropada works with, he is also the chairman of Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria and senior practitioner of Anglicare Victoria Parentzone.

For more than 10 years now Mr Suropada has been delivering programs for parents from diverse communities including the Healthy Families Healthy Relationships programs and Dads Do Matter program.

He is also an active member of the Cardinia Together We Can steering committee.

The coronavirus pandemic has not diminished the work of Mr Surpada.

Along with other members of the Sikh community, he has worked tirelessly with Sikh organisations and Gurduaras preparing and delivering thousands of free meals to vulnerable communities such as those at risk of domestic violence.

“It was a surprise but it was a good surprise.

It’s good to be acknowledged,” Mr Suropada said.

“I think it’s very humbling and it kind of helps to validate the work we’re doing and encourages us to do even more.

“We have been doing work within the space for many years. It is a good feeling and it also boosts the organisation that we are on the right track.“ The Gary McQuillian award is in honour of

“He is known for being hardworking, reliable and always remaining humble about his achievements.”

The 2020 Gary McQuillian award was awarded to Steven Sparrow, Cardinia Shire Council’s community strengthening manager.

Over the past seven years, Mr Sparrow has been an active leader in the prevention of violence against women at the council.

The dedicated role model founded the council’s Men’s Action Team, which was designed to education and support the organisation to implement various strategies to raise awareness and prevent violence against women.

He also played a key role in the council’s success in achieving White Ribbon workplace accreditation.

“These four men are outstanding gentlemen and when you think about the heroes you see on TV who might be sporting athletes, these men are just as important for the work that they do in the local community,” Mr Bryson added.

Both award recipients received a certificate and a voucher sponsored by Cardinia Shire Council.

ComminiCare took over White Ribbon in May, with the vision of creating a “nation that respects women, in which every woman lives safely, free from all forms of men’s abuse”.

“We relaunched six weeks ago now and there’s a lot of history to overcome and some trust and credibility to rebuild,” Mr Chilcot said during the event.

“One of the great things about CommuniCare getting involved like this is that they themselves are frontline women’s safety services - they’ve been in that area for 20 years.”

One of the big changes White Ribbon will be making is a shift from awareness to action.

“We think now that White Ribbon and many others have done an amazing job at ensuring that family violence is on the national agenda,” he explained.

“But we think now, as opposed to a decade ago, that work, although it’s never completely done, is a much different situation now.

“Australians know that more than one woman a week is being murdered by her current or former intimate partner. They know that police are receiving a callout every two minutes to respond to family violence.”

The organisation is shifting some of its well known programs to be more focused on community grassroots action.

Its Ambassadors and Advocates program is now going to be called Community Partners.

“The idea is rather than it being about a man on a pedestal for not using violence it’s going to be about how a man can come along-

Family violence funding

By Mitchell Clarke More than $20 million in extra funding has been directed to family violence support services amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Monday 17 August, Premier Daniel Andrews and Prevention of Family Violence Minister Gabrielle Williams announced more initiatives to combat family violence and address the jump in demand for perpetrator services during the pandemic.

“We know there’s an increased risk of family violence during the pandemic, which is why we want to ensure every single Victorian can access the services and support they need,” Ms Williams said.

Almost 1500 family violence incidents across the Cardinia Shire were recorded in the last year to March, according to the Crime Statistics Agency - but frontline services expect that number to soar.

In the past month, the Men’s Referral Service has reported an 11 percent boost in calls compared to the same time last year.

The increased funding will go towards providing support for family violence service providers as well as intervention and behaviour change programs for perpetrators.

The Premier said the new funding package would help more victims stay in their own homes, while keeping perpetrators in “full sight”.

“If you are using violence or hurting someone in your family - or if you’re worried that you might - then the very best thing you can do is ask for help. Take the first step and contact the Men’s Referral Service,” Mr Andrews said.

As reported by the Gazette last week, domestic violence victims will not be fined for fleeing violent family members or hostile situations despite the 8pm lockdown curfew.

“Right now, staying at home is the safest thing we can do, but we know for some people, being at home is anything but safe,” Ms Williams added.

“If you are experiencing family violence, leaving for your safety is perfectly legitimate ... You will not be fined.”

Trader’s fury over carpark

By Brendan Rees A trader is up in arms after a retail giant decided to alter three parking bays to ‘pick-up’ at the front of a Berwick shopping centre without notice.

Andrew Savige, owner of Baker’s Delight at Berwick Marketplace, said he was dumbfounded to find the parking spaces had been painted over as dedicated ‘pick-up’ bays when he arrived at work on Tuesday morning, 11 August - which Woolworths has confirmed is a temporary social distancing measure for customers.

Mr Savige said he supported click-and-collect parking but was frustrated that a decision had been made without any notice or consideration for the elderly.

“I’d be happy if they all went to disabled (parking); that’s no dramas, but putting it for click-and-collect so no one can park there that’s just ridiculous,” he said. “Woolworths never told any of us. They’ve just gone and done it.

“We’re all struggling, we’re all in this boat together. You don’t just jump on the bandwagon and just start writing your name on everything.

He added: “You can’t chop a tree down and you can’t put a bloody shed up without the council all over you.”

Casey Council manager of city and asset planning Keri New said council had not been “made aware of, or consulted” with by Woolworths management on changes made to the parking spaces.

“These works were undertaken by the

Woolworths management. It is noted that as part of State Government’s announcement of stage four restrictions, there were recommendations for retailers to offer click-and-collect as part of their Covid-19 Safe Plans.

“We understand that many businesses across the community are working hard to continue to serve our community throughout this challenging time.

“Council will work in conjunction with Bakers Delight management and impacted business owners, and will consider changes to other public parking spaces along the shop front to suit their and the community’s needs.”

A Woolworths spokesperson said the installation of the two drive-through pick-up bays at Woolworths Berwick Marketplace was a temporary measure to help make social distancing easier for customers picking up their online orders.

“The contactless drive-through pick-up service is a great option for those customers with mobility challenges and anyone looking to limit their outings due to Covid-19,” the spokesperson said.

In a statement, Woolworths said “due to a miscommunication, council was not informed prior to the installation of the drive-through pick up bays, however, this has since been resolved and council has confirmed they are supportive of the social distancing measure”.

Woolworths has expanded its contactless drive-through pick-up service in Victoria to almost 30 new stores in the past week and the service is now available in more than 100 stores across Victoria.

For Chris Rodrigues, sketching a popular park in Lynbrook has offered a soothing outlet while in lockdown.

The self-taught artist and father-of-one spent just a couple of nights using digital pencils for a change, to create his eye-catching piece depicting Banjo Paterson Park.

“It was the most therapeutic thing I’ve done in a long time,” Mr Rodrigues said.

A creative director by day, Mr Rodrigues used Adobe Fresco on his iPad to create his stunning piece, a program that is equipped with tools that behave like the real thing including pencils, brushes, markers, inks and other media.

“It’s incredible, but takes some getting used to. The result is quite close to the real thing.”

It is only his second drawing using the program. The first was last year when he sketched

his now 14-month-old daughter a month after she was born - which turned out to be an “absolute smasher on the second attempt“.

With no artistic formal training, Mr Rodrigues said his latest creation proved rewarding.

“It’s come up really well, it’s surprised me to be honest.

“It was interesting to get into a lot of treescape and different bush. I thought I would just inspire myself to take out the brushes and start painting again.”

Mr Rodrigues, a Lynbrook resident, said he had taken a photo of the Banjo Paterson Park on his phone to create his detailed and intricate piece - an exercise he said that “just takes me somewhere else”.

But the one thing he said that “really struck” was the support he received from the community after posting his artwork to Facebook.

“They’re so supportive and appreciative of things. This is such a lovely community.”

Bryce rolls up sleeves

By Brendan Rees Narre Warren State Emergency Service volunteer Bryce Wickham has rolled up his sleeve to generously donate blood to help those in need.

The 2020 Emergency Services Blood Challenge is two thirds of the way through, and SES members are well on their way to eclipsing last year’s total.

Mr Wickham is one of 147 SES volunteers to have made 251 donations so far - up 48 per cent from this time in 2019.

“This would be my 25th donation of blood over 10 years, some of which have been for the Emergency Services Challenge,” Mr Wickham said. “I try to donate every three months, however, there have been a few breaks due to overseas travel.”

With just a slight pinch, Mr Wickham said giving blood was rewarding and straightforward. “It also helps that the staff are always friendly and make you feel very comfortable,” he said.

“Years back, a friend told me she was donating for the first time. After she explained how simple and smooth the process was I thought I’d give it a go. For me, it’s another way of lending an arm and blood to help others.”

Three lives can be saved by just one blood donation, meaning SES members may have helped up to 753 people who have had medical complications, cancer treatment, road trauma injuries and more.

Emergency service workers and volunteers who want to take part should join a Lifeblood Team, and call 13 14 95 or go online to make a blood donation appointment before 31 August. Australia Red Cross Lifeblood centres are an essential service remaining open during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Firefighters have prevented a hazardous incident after a forklift battery began emitting a toxic gas at the rear of a Narre Warren South shopping centre on Saturday 15 August.

A Narre Warren CFA spokesman said they discovered an electric forklift battery that had been left on charge causing it to overheat and indicate “high readings” of carbon monoxide.

Crews brought the scene under control at 6.30am after removing the forklift from the main building.

One appliance from Cranbourne Fire Station also attended.

Paramedics were called to scene at 6.10am, but no one was injured as a result.

Officer’s concrete jungle

By Jessica Anstice Officer families have been making the most of lockdown by turning an entire estate into an imaginary ‘animal zoo’ for children.

At the start of lockdown 2.0, Timbertop estate residents were invited to pick an animal they wanted to create - whether it be a poster or a model - to put on display in front of their home.

More than 20 households decided they wanted to participate and spent hours designing and creating their animal for display.

Ostriches, gorillas, tigers, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, monkeys, elephants, pandas, butterflies, owls and flamingos were among the animals in the estate’s zoo.

Participants were also asked to include a fun fact sheet about their animal for children passing by to read.Before the official opening of the zoo, residents were even given a map to help locate each display and make exploring that little bit easier.

From Monday 10 August to Sunday 16 August, the regular one hour walks around the estate turned into an excursion to the zoo for local families.

“I thought it would be fun for the kids to do as having a six-year-old myself I know homeschooling isn’t all that fun,” event organiser Jemma Cushen said.

“With the kids having to stay indoors for a very long time I wanted them to have some fun and be creative and also take their minds off what’s happening in the world during this crazy time.

“I think having the fact sheets out about the animal they have chosen was a great learning experience for them also. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a trip to the zoo!”

“The potential of what I could achieve by having one foot in business and the other in community excited me and that is what inspired me to start my own business,” she said.

Khatija is delighted to be named as a finalist and is proud of her achievements, particularly connecting communities.

“Through my business and community networks, I assisted with organising events that aimed to empower girls and that brought multicultural communities together to celebrate the contributions of men, women and young people to their respective community groups,” she said.

There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood as Khatija explained: “I love that I can select the hours I work so I can continue to be involved in my daughters’ world, whether it is helping at Treat Day at school or attending sporting events.

“More recently my younger daughter has learned to send me zoom invitations in-between my appointments so she can upload her maths homework and we can go through it together. I love developing their interest and being able to introduce them to people within my business networks who can guide them so they can see their own ideas come to fruition.

“I also love being able to support other women turn their passion into business.”

It can be challenging to be a successful business woman whilst raising a family and Khatija gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise.

“Take the time to really understand yourself in terms of who you are, what you stand for and what your skills are. Incorporate your values into your business because this is what will separate you from your competitors.”

Meanwhile, business at Casey Hearing is continuing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Changes to service delivery have been implemented so that the team can continue to help people with minimised risk.

“Physical distancing should not mean further social isolation for our hard of hearing clients. $3m for sporting grounds

By Brendan Rees Clyde Recreation Reserve is set for a massive transformation, thanks to a $3m funding boost from the State Government.

The new additions will include construction of a district-level reserve with three Australian rules football/cricket ovals; two netball courts; eight tennis courts (six relocated courts and two new courts); two multi-use community pavilions; and a car park with 300 sealed car spaces.

Works are expected to start in early 2021 to be delivered over two years.

Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale on Friday 14 August announced the project saying the facility was about helping grassroots sports communities, creating jobs and kick-starting vital projects across the state.

“These sport and rec facilities will be such a drawcard and focal point for our sporting clubs in and around Clyde,” she said.

“This project really illustrates that when State and Local Government come together in partnership - the community we are here to serve are the ones who benefit.

“I want to thank the City of Casey for recognising the need for these facilities for our growing community, for prioritising the project and most importantly for the very significant contribution.”

Council will be contributing $10m towards the project while $8m is coming from developer contributions to implement the $21m Clyde Creek Precinct Structure Plan.

Once complete the project will deliver an AFL/Cricket/Rugby Union pavilion featuring: a multipurpose community room; eight change-rooms with associated unisex amenities;

· two unisex referee’s rooms; · first aid room; · public female, male, unisex and accessible toilets; · kitchen/canteen, office, scorer’s room and storage.

The tennis pavilion will also have many useful features including a community room; change rooms with associated unisex amenities; public female, male, unisex and accessible toilets; drinks servery and kitchen/servery; storage, office and an external covered viewing area.

Casey Council chair of administrators Noelene Duff said it “much welcomed news”, and a “vital project” for creating jobs and providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.

“The funding will kick-start the transformation of Clyde Recreation Reserve, which when completed, will connect thousands of local families and young people with community sports and recreation opportunities,” Ms Duff said.

“Clyde’s population has tripled in the past three years. It is now home to 30,000 residents, with more families flocking to this developing suburb each year.

“The suburb has outgrown its existing oval and tennis courts and this important upgrade will help local sports and community clubs grow and expand.”

Casey Council CEO Glenn Patterson thanked the State Government for supporting council’s funding application, which was set to provide “enormous benefits for the community”.

AFL Vic’s G25 response By sports editor Russell Bennett AFL Victoria has issued its long-awaited response to the G25 Strategy final report, and it makes for fascinating reading.

To address various concerns and develop a long-term plan for the region, AFL Victoria engaged Melbourne-based boutique strategy consulting firm ColganBauer to conduct an independent review into the structure of Gippsland football.

Its focus was on creating a structure to ensure the sustainability of the game in the region moving forward, with a view to developing a strategy for football in Gippsland otherwise known in some circles as the ‘Gippsland 2025 Strategic Plan’.

Overall, the G25 Strategy highlighted three key challenges - the declining participation base of football; current league structures that, it states, “are not sustainable”; and the model to support the running of football in the region having “broken down”.

The report contained 46 recommendations for AFL Victoria.

According to a release by AFL Victoria last Wednesday night, all of those recommendations have been identified as “either worthy of implementation, or already contained within an existing analysis that can be further examined in order to incorporate suggestions put forward by the report’s independent authors, ColganBauer”.

AFL Victoria issued a 21-page response to the 98-page ‘G25 Strategy’.

Chief among the recommendations that AFL Victoria will adopt includes moving the Alberton clubs into the Mid Gippsland league in time for the 2021 season.

“AFL Victoria sees this strategy as providing long-term financial and competition security for clubs in both leagues,” its response states.

“The 2021 league format will provide an enhanced product for sponsorship and allow for an increased finals format if desired. AFL Victoria commits to working with both leagues to ensure the process is in the best interests of all clubs and stakeholders.”

Yet it’s understood some current Mid Gippsland clubs have discussed the possibility of leaving that competition with a view to joining neighbouring leagues.

Crucially, AFL Victoria will also adopt the recommendation to shift to a divisional football and netball model in the “western corridor” - involving both the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition, and the Ellinbank league.

This will be implemented “at the point of best fit before 2025”.

The original recommendation states that the clubs should develop the promotion-relegation criteria before the divisional structure is implemented.

In response, AFL Victoria stated: “AFL Victoria endorses this recommendation but will seek further consultation with local stakeholders over the viability of this format to meet the evolving needs of the community in West Gippsland.

“Both AFL Victoria and AFL Gippsland will engage with local leagues and clubs with the intention of determining the health and financial implications of Covid-19, and whether that position still supports a move toward a divisional football structure within the recommended timeframe.”

Back in June, all 12 West Gippsland Football Netball Competition clubs met with AFL Outer East as they explore their options moving forward.

It’s understood the options on the table in front of the clubs include: forming a new entity and going it alone as their own, separate competition away from AFL Gippsland; disaffiliating from AFL Victoria, creating a new league and going it alone; self-governing with an affiliation agreement with AFL Gippsland; maintaining the status quo; or entering into discussions with AFL Outer East - where they could be administered as an independent competition under the current West Gippsland model for an extended period of time.

AFL Victoria will adopt the recommendation, adding: “There is a state-wide understanding that the costs of operating football clubs need to be explored to enable clubs to survive post Covid-19”.

AFL Victoria will also conduct a review into the player points system currently used in Gippsland, and identify any possible improvements or revisions to incentivise junior player retention and development by the senior clubs.

AFL Victoria will also begin to transition all central Gippsland leagues (including the Traralgon District juniors, the Mid Gippsland league, and the North Gippsland league) to an under-14s and under-17 competition model.

There will also be a women’s football strategy developed specifically for Gippsland, in order to best promote and grow the women’s game throughout the region.

Another of the key recommendations to come out of the initial report was for AFL Victoria to provide clarity for leagues and clubs by better defining the roles and responsibilities of league administrators and football development managers (FDMs). It stated that the role of the FDMs should be communicated to all stakeholders, and captured on the AFL Gippsland website.

In its response, AFL Victoria said it would adopt that recommendation and is “currently undertaking analysis of its staffing structure to best support community football post Covid-19”.

The Morwell-based Regional Administration Centre (RAC) has come under constant fire from some parts of the region, with the Gippsland League and West Gippsland Football Netball Competition the only senior competitions currently run out of there.

One of the recommendations in the G25 strategy was to create a club development/ sustainability role to provide specialist sup-

port to Gippsland clubs regarding their challenges around sustainability.

AFL Victoria will also develop this recommendation.

Another criticism from Gippsland football and netball circles was centred on the number of past reviews that weren’t seen to be acted on sufficiently enough.

AFL Victoria said it recognises the importance of implementing change quickly, to allow stakeholders to plan for 2021; and will also adopt the recommendation to develop a working group made up of a mixture of AFL Victoria, AFL Gippsland, league, and club representatives to be responsible for the implementation of the recommendations.

A significant talking point that will come out of AFL Victoria’s response is its adoption of the recommendation to redefine the role of the AFL Gippsland commission to act as an advisory board that sets the strategic direction for football in the region.

“During 2019, AFL Gippsland was operating at a loss,” the initial G25 report stated.

“As a result, the AFL Gippsland Commission resigned and were replaced by an interim commission. The current commission does not include anyone from the local area (Gippsland).”

That report also acknowledged that, after the implementation of the Morwell-based RAC, several leagues left “citing poor service levels or increasing costs as the primary reasons”.

It then adds: “Without changes, the existing model is likely to fail”.

AFL Victoria’s response agrees that it should implement “a continuous improvement model to refine business processes and identify points of failure”, saying, simply, in its response to that recommendation: “AFL Victoria and AFL Gippsland will work collaboratively toward implementing process improvements”.

Another hot topic of discussion stemming from the initial report was having the RAC report directly to AFL Victoria, rather than the AFL Gippsland commission.

This recommendation, too, was adopted saying AFL Victoria staff within the region “along with other AFL Victoria staff based at AFL House will be utilised to better train and

resource AFL Gippsland staff moving forward, with the aim of improving services in the region”.

The G25 Strategy final report highlighted the need “to reverse the deterioration of AFL Victoria’s relationship with the region”, and stated that “the reputation of the RAC in the region is currently negative, with leagues highlighting RAC costs as an issue”.

The report also stated that, under the current country football regional structure across the state, “AFL Victoria appears to have reduced the level of support of country football; (and) they also provide limited oversight of what was occurring at a regional level and have limited control over the commissions.

“In Gippsland, this led to a situation where the commission did not have the appropriate support to deliver the services.

“The relationship between AFL Victoria and participants in the region is hostile.

“There have been several changes implemented by AFL Victoria in Gippsland that have not been viewed positively by participants.

“The rationale for decisions has been poorly communicated to participants, and there is limited contact by AFL Victoria with some clubs and leagues.”

As part of AFL Victoria’s newly-released response to the G25 Strategy, head of community football Steve O’Donohue said: “The health and safety of the community, together with club and league sustainability, has been the priority of all clubs and leagues in the Gippsland region.

“We are committed to making football better and stronger for all participants in Gippsland and we thank everyone who has provided feedback through the consultation process of this report to ColganBauer.”

The initial G25 interim report was released back in March, and left many stunned.

That 86-page report made a series of draft recommendations and was criticised in some corners for its lack of focus on the premier league in the Gippsland region, the Gippsland League.

“We’ve probably turned our attention to the white-ball, the game plans, those sorts of things,” he said.

“We’ve done a lot of work as a coaching group in knowing what our plans would be in one-day cricket and how we go about that.”

From an on-field perspective, the Swans went hard at gun bowlers Simon Mackin and Michael Topp as clubs scramble to improve their lists, with recruitment across the board as active as it’s ever been.

“I’ve never seen it so competitive in terms of the recruitment of players - this season, it’s just been rampant,” he said.

“If we identify a player who we believe isn’t getting an opportunity and we think there’s a gap in our list, it’s appropriate.

“We’ve spoken to lots of guys, but it is difficult when you don’t get the face-to-face interviews.”

The bowling department was a clear area of focus for the Swans this off-season, missing out on the signatures of Topp and Mackin, but securing mature-age quick Cal Dodson and young spinner Harrish Kannan to boost its stocks. Berwick spinner Isaiah Jassal is also expected to push hard for a spot in the first XI. But Keogh said the club was backing in what it already had, pointing to the likes of spearhead Nathan Lambden, Jackson Fry, Dodson, Lachie Sperling, Harrish Kannan, the returning Blake Glen and a range of other spinners such as Jonah Serong, Isaiah Jassal and Ashvin Adihetty to take the next step and get the club back in the finals race.

“Sperlo (Lachie Sperling) is like a new recruit, and at his best he’s a serious player, and he’s the fittest he’s ever been,” he said.

“Without piling on the pressure on him, we’re hoping for a really big year from him with bat and ball.

“Nathan (Lambden) could have another breakout season like he did two or three seasons ago, Jacko’s (Fry) last couple of months last season were really good he just didn’t get the reward, but he bowled really well so we think we can get good improvement out of him as well, and Cal Dodson is new to this level, but he’s a quality guy and competitive beast.

“And then we’ve got the spinners, so we feel we’ve got a really good mix.

“We’re going to go with what we got, there’s really upside there.”

In terms of the batting mix, Keogh indicated that the Swans will have an array of options to help fill the void left by overseas pro Luke Wells and mature-age gun Nathan Freitag, highlighting the emerging Ash Chandrasinghe and the experience around him as being a major positive for the club as they aim to be one

While there still is no clear indicator of exactly when the Victorian Premier Cricket season will eventually kick-off, for Casey-South Melbourne, it’s all about building on the bonds created within the club and playing the patience game in terms of the cricket.

While the Swans will be desperately looking to break back into the finals when the season does eventually get the green light, for now, it’s all about staying connected, checking in with each other, and showing support throughout what has been an incredibly tolling pandemic.

Swans coach Brian Keogh said that the playing and coaching group were getting around one another and as a result the excitement and anticipation for the season - and getting together once again as a group - is building by the day.

“We’ve been active with our players’ page on Facebook - we’re trying to check-in with everyone, and make sure everyone’s okay,” he said.

“We’ve got some guys who have had their work hours decreased or loss of jobs, and Lachie Sperling really led the charge with this he’s a teacher, and his school had a program, and obviously he put a cricket spin on this, but basically we’ve asked ‘what have you been doing in iso?’, ‘what are you most looking forward to about the season?’, and ‘what’s on your mind?’.

“We’ve had guys who have been really open about a few things, and we’ve been able to get around them.

“So as a club we’ve focused more on people’s health and wellbeing, and not anything cricket related.”

While Keogh said that the club can only control what they can control, and that is staying connected and showing support for one another, the Swans mentor weighed in on the season ahead, with Cricket Victoria only recently releasing a series of scenarios for getting the season underway.

“It already feels like a long pre-season, and we’ve not even had any pre-season,” he said.

“My gut feeling is option three (21 November start), which is a 17-round season, and all one-day cricket.

“Option one has almost passed us by, twoday cricket during Covid could be difficult, and in the one-day game there’s less breaks, and heaven forbid if someone got sick you don’t have to worry about chopping and changing.

With Keogh expecting the season to be played in one-day format, he said that the coaching group has had to re-adjust its thought process in terms of how his side could be structured.
