An elderly resident at a Pakenham aged care facility has tested positive to Covid-19, according to a letter sent out to residents and their relatives. The positive test comes after a casual staff member - believed to have been a kitchen worker at the Menarock Life McGregor Gardens facility - returned a “detected result”. The news was sent out by letter from Menarock Life CEO Kath Warren on Friday 24 July. “As part of our open disclosure and open communication, I would like to inform you that one of our staff members from McGregor Gardens has just received a detected Covid-19
piratory illness. We will continue to monitor all our residents closely. “We appreciate that this news is difficult, but I believe it important that we are open and honest with you at this time and we will keep you informed as we have more information available.” When contacted by Star News on Tuesday 29 July, a Menarock employee said there were no cases, and stated only the CEO was authorised to make public comment. The employee said: “the CEO will call you if she feels the need to discuss this”. Star News understands four staff members were isolating and all residents were tested following the first case. An email from McGregor Gardens manage-
ment - sent to families on Wednesday 29 July - confirmed that a resident had since returned a positive test. “Overnight all the results for residents and staff came through. We unfortunately have one resident return a positive test,” the email read. “We continue to monitor residents very closely for any signs or symptoms. We are working closely with the Commonwealth and State health departments in managing this outbreak and we have all the resources that we need to care for the residents.” It’s unclear which area of the facility the resident is located in. Mortified by waste find By Jessica Anstice An Officer resident was left feeling “absolutely mortified” when she discovered her hard rubbish pile had been disturbed and completely strewn across her front yard and nature strip. While it’s common and usually welcomed for people to search through hard rubbish and salvage items otherwise destined for landfill, it’s not appreciated when a neatly organised pile is left trashed. Markbeech Crescent resident Nicole Anne orderly placed her hard rubbish on her front lawn on Sunday 26 July, ready for collection the following day. At about 6.15pm, she received a call from her neighbours informing her that the pile of junk had been scattered everywhere. “The way we left it met all of council requirements - it was neat and tidy. I should have taken a photo but who thinks anything like this would happen,” she explained. “I was absolutely mortified! I think it’s fine if people want to turn items from trash to trea-
sure although some respect should be shown when removing items and you should always leave it neat and tidy. “I have never seen anyone’s hard rubbish in this state. I’m hesitant to take the hard rubbish route in future - I would prefer to hire a trailer and pay to tip it. It just made moving 10 times stressful than it needed to be.” Ms Anne said she contacted the local police, however she was told it was an issue for Cardinia Shire Council. CCTV footage led Ms Anne to suspect it was a man driving a white ute who lives nearby her. “Ultimately actions like this should result in a monetary fine, it’s morally wrong to deliberately vandalise somebody else’s property like this,” she said. “I wasn’t left to clean it up, hard rubbish removal was scheduled the next day and when I returned to the property majority of the mess had been cleaned up beside the small pieces of broken glass. “I’m extremely thankful to say the least.”

A Narre Warren park has been cleaned up after it was trashed on Friday 17 July. Ray Bastin Reserve was reportedly littered with booze bottles and rubbish with the incident reported to Casey Council.
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said he was shocked by the incident and “terribly disappointed” that people did not seem to be getting the message of socially distancing. “We need people of all ages to abide by the rules on leaving their home and the importance of distancing,” he said.

Crop-sitter cops jail term “You acknowledged that what you were being asked to do was illegal and when asked why you would take such a risk you told (the psychologist): ‘No choice ... I need the money to live and send to mum’.” Dinh did not receive any financial benefit from the operation as police seized the drugs before they were sold, Judge Georgiou noted. Eventually, she pleaded guilty to a charge of cultivation of cannabis and theft of electricity on 6 July this year. However, because Dinh was not the prime organiser of the operation, she was charged on a single-day only basis - the day police uncovered the crop house. “I accept that you were not the organiser of the crop house and that your role was a lower level of that of the organiser,” Judge Georgiou told Dinh in court. “It was submitted that you are still relatively young and have no previous convictions. Your offending is out of character. “I am told that you will be deported once your sentence is completed. You will be returned to your mother and you will have the opportunity to start a fresh in Vietnam.” Dinh was sentenced to two years’ jail with a one year non-parole period and has already served 266 days of pre-sentence detention.
By Jessica Anstice A woman has been sentenced to jail for two years after police busted a crop house that was stealing electricity in Pakenham. Police executed a search warrant at Nhu Ho Ai Dinh’s rental house in Salvia Avenue on 30 October last year, as part of a wider police operation relating to cannabis crop houses, Victoria County Court Judge George Georgiou said in sentencing on 22 July. As a result of the raid, police located 36 cannabis plants growing in three rooms, weighing 64 kilograms in total - almost three times the legal commercial amount. The court heard an electrical bypass system was found to be installed in the main bedroom of the house. An electrician measured the electricity in use at 32.48 amps, while the meter only recorded 4.23 amps in use. The electrician was unable to determine the estimated cost of the stolen electricity, Judge Georgiou said. The 27-year-old was arrested at the house and interviewed by police, however she decided to exercise her right to silence in relation to the allegations. It was later discovered that Dinh was not in fact the organiser of the crop house operation. “With regard to your offending you told (the

A “manic” driver came within millimetres of hitting cars as he weaved through traffic to allegedly evade police in Officer. Dash cam footage captured the moment a silver Toyota Land Cruiser veered off the Princes Freeway, into the emergency lane and on to the grass in a bid to get away from a following cop car. Pakenham man Chris Martin was on his way to pick up his young daughter from preschool when he noticed the agitated driver travelling behind him, just after 4pm on Wednesday 22 July. “All of a sudden I noticed this car which was right up my back,” Mr Martin explained. “He was just manic. He took an evasive move because he wanted to get around me, so he drove on the grass before weaving back into traffic, missing me by millimetres.” Mr Martin said the “frightening” incident was made even more scary, as drivers were unable to escape the vehicle’s path. “I’ve never seen anything like this in person before, you only ever seen that sort of stuff on TV,” he said. “It was crazy and you couldn’t get out of his way because there was just so much traffic. I could tell that everyone was stressed. “It was very frightening but I’m just grateful my daughter wasn’t in the car to witness

Main Street masks up It was masks on last week for the residents at Main Street Village in Pakenham along with all other Melburnians. And it was masks-on for a totally different group of Village People in Main Street Village as well! These creatively carved Coleonema (common name - Golden Diosma), shaped into solitary souls standing along a pathway, donned masks as a visible reminder for residents to wear their masks from today to help stay healthy. “Try not to laugh out loud when you stroll along the path past the ‘Village People’. I bet you will crack up in stitches” said one resident. “Our gardener, Murray, shaped what were just these ordinary looking bushes, Golden Diosma I think he calls them, into this gaggle of golden girls and boys.” Di McKellar, the village manager said “They are such great fun amongst the doom and gloom at the moment and they are a fun way to convey the serious message to us all to mask up as well. “Murray created them from these ordinary looking shrubs. This area was a bit overgrown and untidy previously. He didn’t tell me initially, he just started shaping them up when he came to work with us recently. He’s given some punk haircuts up. “Apparently, he saw the sculpture potential and began creating this little tribe with an end in mind. He’s very creative as well as highly skilled with a great sense of humour too! “Murray also co-opted Frank, one of the residents who loves wood working, to help him fashion the stakes he attached the eyes to. “Yesterday when he showed me the photo on his phone I laughed out loud! I asked him to please prune another shrub tomorrow so we can put a mask on it. It will lighten everyone’s day! It’s a fun way to reinforce the important health message for our residents. Little did I know that he had already shaped more than 8
other shrubs. This morning I gave him my bag of dress up things with bandanas and crazy sunglasses and a mask to put on them. You can see the results in the photos,” said Di. “Yes, I know these Village People aren’t the correct 1.5m social distance apart and so that’s why they all have masks and/or face coverings. It was too much to ask Murray to move them all! And again, it’s a wonderful way to reinforce the Covid Safe health message in our village to help keep our residents healthy. If plants can be Covid Safe so can people!” The village sculptor come horticulturist, Murray Christmas (yes he says his birthday is
25th December) said it was a “fun little project”. “There are heaps of these Golden Diosma (Coleonema pulchellum aurea) planted throughout the village. When I started six months back the majority were amorphous blobs. Some had hints of previous shapes but this group needed work. I was guided by each plant’s form, location and my imagination. “Gardens, like art, impact us in ways we don’t understand and lots of times in ways we don’t even realise. Gardens have a huge impact on us, from our food to our feelings, so why not make them fun and interesting?!” said Murray.
“So I created some different sculpture shapes. Some got “punk haircuts”, so I added eyes and mouths with leaves and twigs. Of course, they blew off, so I found some goggle eyes and Frank skilfully shaped some stakes for the eyes. “They looked great! When I showed Di the ‘Diosma Dioramas’, she laughed and suggested some masks and dress up glasses to bring some cheer to the residents. There’s eight or so dressed up now. The results are fun. There’s a pic of me with the ‘Where’s Wally Diosma Diorama’. My kids saw the pic and asked, “Which one’s the Wally?”

Despite hosting many large community events, Circuit Park in Lakeside is without a public toilet facility, meaning people are often forced to go home to use the bathroom. Lakeside Residents Group president Wendy Andrews is hopeful a new public toilet strategy will identify the site as in need of a public restroom. The strategy will set out a 10-year framework for Cardinia Shire Council to provide safe, accessible, clean, and environmentally sustainable public toilets for residents and visitors. “We’ve decided to approach to the council to see if we can get another public toilet installed in Lakeside,” Ms Andrews said. “Circuit Park is used by quite a lot of people and we hold a number of events up at that location, which can see up to 300 people over a three hour period.” Popular events such as the ‘Eggcellent Easter Hunt’ - which has been running since 2006 - and the ‘Teddy Bears picnic’ have been held at the site. “Any of the events that are too big for Dragon Park are usually held at Circuit Park instead,” Ms Andrews explained. “But we have often heard from people in the past who say they have to head home just
to go to the toilet, which isn’t great.” There are currently 39 council owned and managed public toilets across the shire, and according to the toilet strategy, the most frequently visited parks and public places within the shire should receive an “equitable provision” of public toilets. The Lakeside Residents Group haven’t ruled out starting a petition to support their proposal, but they’re confident the council will back the idea. Central Ward councillor Michael Schilling said he was “very supportive” of the pitch, vowing to advocate to council. He said a public toilet at the site would not only mean people could stay for longer periods of time, it’d also increase the parks popularity among locals, once Covid restrictions are over. “No single councillor has a cheque book, so I would present the need for this project to a future council seeking endorsement,” Cr Schilling said. “Time is quickly coming to an end on this term of council, if I’m fortunate enough to be returned I’ll make sure I undertake all the research required to get an accurate idea of the infrastructure needed to service such a facility. “It’s not a project that will happen overnight, but if the community want it, which early feedback states they do, I’m very supportive of advocating for this project in future capital works budgets.”
A proposed new road link at an arterial in Clyde North is set to improve local connectivity to a new school and community centre. At its 21 July meeting, Casey Council administrators approved $500,000 in funding to extend Ferdinand Drive by 90 metres to a new roundabout at Grices Road - allowing more families in Clyde North and the Minta Farm precinct easy access to the new public Grayling Primary School and Manna Gum Family and Community Centre. Under the plans, the funding will also be allocated to building a deceleration lane due to the expected increase in traffic from the east of Grices Road, which will ensure the ongoing safe operation of the existing intersection of Grices Road and Glenrose Boulevard. Council is currently in talks with major developer Stockland that owns a parcel of land bordering Grices Road to the north known as the Minta Estate. According to a council document, Stockland is obligated to construct 600 metres of Grices Road from Glenrose Boulevard to the east as part of their estate access requirements at a cost of $2.9 million - known as the Grices Road East project. Council says the planned Grices Road works will create a new roundabout linking Grices Road to a connector street into Minta Farm to the north and Ferdinand Drive to the south. Under a ‘works-in-kind arrangement’ council says it will pay Stockland for the delivery of this project using developer contribution funds as part of the Clyde North precinct structure plan. The council document revealed Stockland was also prepared to deliver the ad-

This partnership, council says, will present “an opportunity for council to achieve cost efficiencies in delivering the required infrastructure at an earlier stage”. At their meeting, council administrators voted unanimously to contribute $500,000 in funding for the additional proposed works under the 2021-22 capital works program. Casey Council administrator Miguel Belmar commended the motion put before council, noting the importance of building roads to meet the demands of the growing municipality. “This motion ensures that an extension will be available so that the future road network responds as early as possible to the needs of the community,” he said.

A 37-year-old Cranbourne man has been allegedly clocked travelling at 77km/h over the speed limit on the Princes Freeway in Berwick on Friday 24 July. The man was allegedly caught driving at 157km/h in an 80km/h zone by Cardinia Highway Patrol who intercepted his Ford Mustang near Clyde Road. The driver was arrested and interviewed in relation to a number of charges. The Mustang was impounded for a period of 30 days resulting in a $1020 towing fee. Police say the driver is expected to be charged. Highway Patrol were patrolling the Princes Freeway roadwork zone near Clyde Road as a part of Operation Sumatra, designed to target high risk driving. The widening works has resulted in the speed limit being reduced to 80km/h.

Cameras to spot drivers on phones

Cameras will capture distracted drivers on their mobile phones from Wednesday 29 July. The cameras allow high-resolution images to be captured in all conditions, regardless of weather and light levels, and for those images to be reviewed in real time to detect potential offences. A three-month trial of state-of-the-art safety cameras, which will also be tested for people not wearing a seatbelt, will be rolled out across Victoria. If introduced, they will be able to operate from any location, 24 hours a day. However, motorists will not be issued infringements during the three months and number plate matching will not be undertaken. All photographs captured will be deleted, except for a limited number of de-identified images. The trial will help understand how the technology can be integrated with the existing road safety camera systems and ensure the cameras operate effectively and accurately. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville said: “This technology will detect those who choose to put lives at risk on our roads.” Research shows drivers who use a mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to cause a fatal road accident. Texting, browsing and emailing increase the crash risk even further - up to ten times. Testing will focus on a relocatable version of the technology across several metropolitan and regional locations and will be conducted by the technology provider, Acusensus, and the current traffic camera services contractor. Cyber attack on school By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham school has become the target of a “cruel and calculated” cyber attack, which created chaos for students trying to learn from home. Several school systems at Lakeside College were targeted in the attack, which is understood to have occurred on Tuesday night, 21 July and affected online classes the next day. Principal Tom Brennen said the matter had been referred to Victoria Police as a criminal matter. “The College has been rocked by this cruel and calculated attack,” Mr Brennen said. “To seek to harm an educational institution at a time when our community is already facing the stresses of Covid -19 is truly terrible. “Our focus, as always, is student learning. Our core teaching and learning platforms have not been impacted.” He said students and teachers were able to continue remote education on Wednesday and Thursday without significant interruption. “As soon as the College was aware of the attack, our systems were locked down and secured to prevent any further attack,” Mr Brennen said. “I commend the staff of the College and our IT team for their work to promptly address the issue and their resilience at a time of high workload.” A school parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Lakeside College had been “absolutely amazing” throughout the ordeal. “I truly am very grateful to the school, they handled this very, very well,” the parent said. “The school had contacted all parents and students to ensure everyone was aware, but I think it’s imperative that other schools are warned. “It never occurred to me that somebody

“This isn’t just about the schooling, it’s also the only form of connection they have everyday.” Principal Brennen said the College was working with Independent Schools Victoria and Lutheran Education Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, to warn other schools of the methods used, and to protect other schools in the community. “Lakeside College is a community blessed
by great relationships sustained by our Christian faith,” Mr Brennen said. “This will allow us, as always, to proceed confidently through any challenges.” External forensic IT contractors have been engaged to conduct a “detailed analysis” into the attack in a bid to prevent future incidents. Victoria Police has been contacted for comment.

Trio nabbed heading off By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham trio - who claimed to be “unaware“ of Covid restrictions - have been nabbed by police as they attempted to travel to Melton. Victoria Police say they caught three people on Wednesday 22 July - who said they were on their way to a mate’s place - despite their friend living on the other side of the city, more than 80 kilometres away. The driver’s comical excuse - not knowing about the widely publicised restrictions - wasn’t enough to win over officers, who slapped the driver and both passengers with a fine. People living in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire can only leave home for four reasons - shopping for food and supplies, care and caregiving, exercise, and study and work, if you can’t do it from home. A Covid checkpoint also nabbed an allegedly drug affected driver and uncovered a mobile drug operation. An “evasive” vehicle - which is said to have attempted to avoid a checkpoint at Lang Lang - was pulled in for questioning by Frontline Tactical Unit members at about 5am on Friday 24 July. Police say the female driver and her male passenger both appeared to be affected by drugs, with the woman allegedly returning a positive oral fluid test. A search of the vehicle was able to uncover
a large amount of illicit drugs including Cocaine, Heroin, Methylamphetine, as well as a range of prescription drugs. It’s understood drug paraphernalia was also seized. The driver, a 39-year-old Seaford woman was arrested at the scene. She was charged with trafficking methylamphetamine, cocaine and heroin, dealing with the proceeds of crime and breaching bail conditions. The passenger, a 45-year-old Korumburra man, was also arrested and charged with trafficking methylamphetamine, cocaine and heroin and dealing with the proceeds of crime. The pair were remanded in custody and are set to appear in court at a later date. Police were also able to determine that the pair’s reasoning for travel was in fact non-essential and each were issued a $1652 fine for breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directive. Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, 22 July, Cardinia Highway Patrol officers intercepted a red Hyundai at the same checkpoint. A 29-year-old Inverloch man told police he had just picked up his car from the impound yard, however before he knew it, his vehicle was headed straight back there. According to police, the driver had a disqualified Probationary drivers licence after accumulating a whopping 123 demerits. At a cost of $895, the vehicle was again impounded for another 30 days and the driver was handed a date in court.

Footage has emerged of a woman who refused to wear a mask at Bunnings Fountain Gate store on Friday 24 July. The three-and-half minute video, which went viral on social media, shows the woman being stopped by a staff member inside the store and asked whether she had a face mask. “Well it’s clear I don’t and you are not authorised to ask me or question me about it,” she says in the video. The woman is then directed to speak to a manager, who informs her she would need a medical certificate. “I actually don’t need a medical certificate,” she says. “You’re discriminating against me.” But the insistent woman snaps back: “You’re not authorised by the Australian Government to even question me about it.” Another manager then intervenes, telling her it’s a condition of entry to wear a face mask. “It’s an unlawful condition of entry, therefore that exposes you, personally and Bunnings to being sued for discrimination because it is in breach of the 1948 Charter of Human Rights to discriminate against men and women,“ she says. Despite the repeated requests to stop filming, the woman refuses saying “this is my evidence against you”. When the managers asked if that is all, the woman filming says: “No, no, no, we’re going to have a wander”. Another video posted online showed the woman berating with police in the carpark after the incident in store. A group of people have thumbed their noses at authorities by gathering at a Cranbourne gym to purportedly discuss coronavirus theories. Eva Black, who recently filmed herself breaching a police checkpoint and labelled the pandemic as a “SCAMdemic” on social media, was a key speaker at the meeting at The Combat Athlete gym on Sunday 26 July. One attendee, who Star News has chosen not to name, posted a photo of the gathering showing about 50 people sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with no apparent effort to practice social distancing or wearing masks, rules that are in force under Melbourne’s lockdown restrictions. “A great night together discussing the putrid conduct of the police, government and media lies,” he wrote. “We are strong and won’t bow down to these oppressors. Eva Black thank you for sharing your experience with us and how the Mainstream Media created a work of fiction. With their slanderous narrative to demonise you, a true libertarian. “God bless the righteous and give them power to prevail.” Black responded: “Thank you for having me there. Worker boost for region By Brendan Rees Two hundred and twenty-two new jobs will be created in Casey and Cardinia thanks to State Government funding aimed at supporting unemployed people through the coronavirus pandemic. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale made the announcement on Wednesday 22 July, saying Casey Council and Cardinia Shire Council had signed up to the $500 million Working for Victoria initiative, which would deliver crucial jobs as well as help those who have lost their
job “due to no fault of their own who in turn will help their fellow community members”.

Growing joy during Covid By Mitchell Clarke A community garden in the grounds of Goodstart in Pakenham has been the most positive thing to grow out of the Covid pandemic. Educators donated a $1000 staff incentive to the feel-good initiative, before working closely with Pakenham Bunnings to bring the project to fruition. Goodstart Pakenham centre director Beth Mason said the grand vision was to create a community garden for children to laugh, learn and play with one another during lockdown. “Childcare is a constant for families during this crisis. It is the one place that children can still come together and families can access the support they need,” Ms Mason said. The childcare identified the things that matter most and focused on the things that could bring children some joy during lockdown. “Essential workers came together to achieve essential things. Children are central to everything we do at Goodstart,” she said. CPA backs Jobkeeper’s six-month extension CPA Australia has welcomed last week’s announcement by the Morrison Government to extend and taper the JobKeeper scheme until March 2021. Elinor Kasapidis, CPA Australia’s tax policy adviser said, “The Government’s approach to tapering JobKeeper payments will be well received by many and is what we had suggested to enable affected businesses to adjust in an orderly way”. CPA Australia has highlighted concerns that the ending of JobKeeper in September will have disastrous impacts on many businesses still struggling with the economic fallout from COVID-19. MUSHROOM AND HOISIN CAUSE A STIR By Tania Phillips Looking for something tasty and nutritious to have with all the rice you’ve still got stockpiled from earlier in the year? Then this stir-fry is for you. Combining the tanginess of the hoisin with the earthy mushroom flavour, salty peanuts, the freshness of sugarsnap peas (maybe from your garden?) and the goodness of chicken breast, this is sure to become a family favourite.
Method 1 Heat a wok over high heat until hot. Add 2 teaspoons oil and half the mushrooms. Stir fry 2 minutes until they start to colour. Remove to a plate. Repeat with oil and remaining mushrooms. 2 Add 2 teaspoons oil to the hot wok. Add half the chicken, stir fry 1 minute until golden. Remove to a plate. Repeat with oil and remaining chicken.

· 2 ½ tbs peanut or vegetable oil · 300g cup mushrooms, thickly sliced · 300g chicken breast, thinly sliced · 150g sugar snap peas, topped · 1/3 cup hoisin sauce · 1/2 cup roasted salted peanuts, optional · Cooked jasmine rice, to serve 3 Add remaining oil and sugar snap peas to the wok. Stir-fry 30 seconds. Return the mushrooms and chicken. Add hoisin sauce and stirfry until well combined and chicken is cooked through. 4 Stir through the peanuts if using. Remove from the heat, serve with rice. Tip You can replace the chicken with beef or pork fillet
Exercising, eating well and relaxing are some of the keys to getting through Lockdown in good shape according to food and health guru Luke Hines. With more than 10 years as a personal trainer and a slew of cookbooks under his belt the former My Kitchen Rules finalist and food presenter on Channel seven’s House Of Wellness - it’s a fair bet he’s probably on to something there. Like all of us, life changed for Hinesy when the lockdown first started back in March but he’s determined it isn’t going to knock him out of his healthy habits. “For me it’s been interesting because I normally commute to Melbourne for work on a weekly basis - sometimes twice a week,” the Gold Coast-based personality said. “When lockdown first hit I was thrown for six because I thought - hang on that’s what I do - I travel to Melbourne and I also just travel and so I had to reinvent how I was producing content. I learned very quickly to adapt in that time and to learn to love the spare time. I think we all run around thinking we’re very very busy and we’ve got to run from A to B. “Two things went on for me - first I had to start to learn to be comfortable with extra time and secondly I thought how could I reinvent what I do during this time?” The answer for Luke was going from doing studio stuff to cooking at home and showing viewers how to cook fantastic food in lockdown and then separate to the show I focused on that as well for social channels including Instagram Live, facebook life - using technology that didn’t cost a thing to get my message out there. So what is his message? What are the five things he thinks are important as we all battle, isolation, depression and the need to eat our way through our store cupboards? “The first thing is the mindset component because if you don’t have the mindset switched on my four other tips won’t really work because if your in a bad headspace you’re not going to want to do any of them,” he explained. “First and foremost try and implement some form of mindfulness or healthy mindset activity into your life.” He said that could be as simple as meditation in the morning, learning mindfulness or yoga - just simply making sure that you cultivate the positive mindset. Tip two is food, according to Luke now is the best time to concentrate on what we are eating and cooking - as well as being good for you it’s a form of mindfulness, being off your device and in the moment. “For ten years I’ve been hearing - I don’t have the time to cook - there is no longer that excuse,” he laughed. “I am so sick to death of that excuse. Now Corona has come along I wish I had everyone’s number who has said that over the years - I’d say hi it’s Luke you now have the time.”

His third tip is - moving - even if you can no longer go to the gym “There is so much you can do at home, you don’t need equipment, you don’t need anything fancy to stay fit,” Luke said. “You just need an arms distance around you to do body weight and exercises. That will look different for everybody, but it doesn’t matter what age or fitness level - there is something you can do - look online.” Type in at homework out on Youtube and on-line and find something suitable. Tip four is look for something you really enjoy. “We do have spare time - is there a language you’ve wanted to learn that you’ve never had time to do, is there a skill you wanted to get hold of - maybe this is the perfect time!,” he suggested. “My fifth and final one is stay connected. Young artists hit the mark By Brendan Rees A pair of creative siblings at a Berwick primary school have taken out the top prizes in Metro Trains’ annual rail safety poster competition. Metro invited children from Foundation through to Year 6 from schools across Melbourne to participate in the ‘Safe Travel on Metro Trains’ competition. With a unique remote learning environment due to coronavirus, students were challenged to combine rail safety messages and advice around health, hygiene and social distancing.
Siblings Vinuthi, 8, and Chanithu, 10, of Brentwood Park Primary School claimed top prizes for their entries. Grade three student Vinuthi won first prize for the Years 3 to 4 category for her poster and took home a Nintendo Switch game console and game. Her poster promoted a range of safe behaviours including walking bikes through level crossings, standing behind the yellow line, and keeping a safe social distance from others. Year 5 student Chanithu took home a Playstation 4 Pro console and gaming headset for
the Years 5 to 6 category for his winning poster that promoted social distancing and the work of emergency services workers, and calling on people to remove headphones at level crossings. Proud dad Chamal Wijesekara said his children, who loved to draw and paint, spent hours on their impressive pieces. “Normally it’s very hard to keep them in one place for this kind of activity,” he said. “We were very, very excited!” Due to coronavirus restrictions, Metro con-
ducted remote video conferencing sessions with the winning students and their principals. Metro community education unit team leader Luke Martin said the competition was a terrific way to engage young people on the importance of being safe around trains. “The remote learning requirements presented some challenges and I’m so proud of all our winners and participants - they’ve really risen to the challenge,” he said. The competition comes ahead of Rail Safety Week (10 - 16 August).

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. And like most pups, they love to play and enjoy a bit of “rough and tumble,” the sanctuary’s life sciences manager Lisa Tuthill said. “We can’t wait to share these two new additions to the sanctuary with our visitors once Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted.” To celebrate the arrival of the new pups, the Sanctuary is running a public naming competition.
The winner receives a dingo puppy adoption, a puppy encounter, a dingo plush toy as well as a Moonlit Sanctuary double pass to visit once the sanctuary re-opens. Michael Johnson, owner and founder of Moonlit Sanctuary, said dingoes played an important role in the Australian eco-system, dispelling any myth they were a pest. “Recent research shows that dingoes keep feral predators like foxes and cats at bay, and so protect many other endangered species,” he said. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Pets adjust to masks in ‘new normal’ By Brendan Rees As the mandatory wearing of face masks becomes the new normal it appears pooches are having a ‘ruff’ time adjusting. It comes as the Lost Dogs Home reported numerous enquiries from members of the public concerned their dog was not showing their happy go lucky personality when going for a walk and displaying fearful behaviours. Nikki Johnson, a behaviourist from RSPCA Victoria said it would not be surprising if pets reacted differently to their owners when wearing a mask as they communicate by facial expressions. “Masks remove much of this form of communication so it wouldn’t be unusual for them to feel uneasy with this new change,” she said. “Pets thrive off feeling safe and are quick to assess whether a new object is a potential danger or threat. “When introducing your mask to them, it’s important to pair the experience with something desirable - such as a treat, fun game, praise or affection. This will help them associate the mask with something positive.” If pets showed fear, Ms Johnson said recommended owners removing or lowering their mask to normalise the situation and help them read facial expressions.
“Pets usually respond better to change when it is slow or gradual. It’s important to give them time to investigate the mask and feel comfortable interacting with you when you are wearing it for short periods of time. “It’s important cats are not forgotten in this discussion either ... usually allowing them to scent you will help re-establish the familiarity.” RSPCA Victoria have provided the following additional tips: Make sure your pet is calm when you start trying to desensitise them to the mask. Wear plain masks of pale colours, and avoid masks with patterns that include faces, eyes or mouths. Make habituation sessions short and positive. Smile even when masked, as friendliness can be conveyed by your eyes. But do not make long, direct eye contact as this can be perceived as a threat.

He was a lionhearted Bull By sports editor Russell Bennett Ian ‘Cambo’ Campbell loved with all his heart, and was beloved by so many in return. That love he had for his family, friends, and the sporting clubs he’d called home was legendary, and no doubt it fueled the fire for his fight - right until the very end. Cambo had battled serious health issues for years, and ultimately passed away in hospital on Tuesday last week. He was just 61. Yet even in his final hours, the incredible strength of that famous ticker of his continually shone through. Four times Cambo suffered a cardiac arrest on the Monday, only for him to fight back each time. He fought harder than most could imagine possible, and that’s because he had the spirit of all of those he’d influenced throughout the decades spurring him on. Sporting clubs, and indeed whole communities, revolve around people like Cambo - people who get so much sheer joy - so much life - out of watching others flourish. A Cardinia Cricket Club life member and club legend, Cambo was one who laid the foundation for the Bulls to build from. But, truth be told, players from far beyond the Bullpen were nurtured by him - and not only as cricketers or footballers, but as people. His involvement in the community football landscape at clubs including Beaconsfield (as a player), and later at ROC, Cranbourne and Lang Lang in an off-field capacity is also fondly remembered - particularly how he closely followed the fortunes of his nephew, Luke Rus, and another player close to his heart - one of the best players to ever lace the boots up in the region - Justin Berry. Cambo had a guiding hand in the lives of generations of sportspeople, and many of those now lead other clubs in their own right. He featured prominently at the Bulls’ 50th Anniversary Gala in February last year - named in the club’s all-decade ‘Team of the ‘80s’. A talented all-rounder, he won the club’s bowling award for the 1983/84 season, and played an integral role in the Bulls making their way into A Grade with the 1987/88 premiership. Cardinia has remained in the top flight of the WGCA ever since, and Cambo’s role as an influential coach gives a real insight as to why. While he also played in the E Grade premiership-winning sides of 1991/92 and 1998/99 later in his career, his sporting feats went far beyond the cricket field. At one stage, he held an official javelin world record at the age of just 12. But those he guided along their own sporting journeys truly felt his biggest impact. Cambo coached the Cardinia juniors to back-to-back under-16 premierships in 1996/97 and 1997/98, and to this day those players proudly remember him as one of the best coaches and mentors they’ve ever had. His mantra was always one of encourage-

Cambo also served with distinction on the Cardinia Cricket Club committee for years - including a stint as president in the 1990s. But so much of his work was done behind the scenes. He was a trusted selector for the teams named at the Bulls’ gala function last year - including the prestigious team of the club’s first 50 years. And there’s a very good reason why. His love for the Bulls extended to his incredible encyclopedic knowledge. Not only could he remember just about every single game he played in, he would individually tailor handwritten scorecards as prized keepsakes for players who reached milestones with bat or ball. It was his way of making sure they felt special - making sure they were truly appreciated. And boy did they appreciate him in return. Current Cardinia Cricket Club president Luke Turner - a life member and club legend in his own right as a wicket-keeper batsman paid a special tribute to his great mate. “If it wasn’t for Cambo, my life would be completely different - I honestly wouldn’t have had the chance to live the life I’m living right now,” he explained. The pair first met when Turner was playing
his junior cricket at Tooradin and Cambo was coaching the Rythdale juniors, as they were known back then. “It was really when he started coaching those junior interleague sides when I really got to know him,” Turner said. “He’d just want to make you feel comfortable, and spoke to you like you were just one of the boys. I know even at interleague he made it feel like we’d played our whole lives together.” It was a few years later, at the footy at Tooradin, that Cambo convinced Turner to make the move that would change his life. “He was the main reason I came across in the first place,” Turner said. “I knew him and the way he went about things, and I thought if everyone was the same as Cambo at the club, I’d have an incredible time there. “I think about it now, and if he didn’t push me to come across to Cardinia, my life would be completely different.” Turner said Cambo’s sheer love of the game, and its people, is what set him apart. “The love he had for the club was ridiculous - he knew everything that was going on,” he said. “There was this one game where I hadn’t seen him for a few months - he’d moved away but he saw me and asked how many dismissals
I had for the day. “I said five, and he just says ‘oh, that takes it to 300 then’.” Cambo knew exactly because, even from afar, he’d keep record. He ultimately even presented Turner and champion spinner Dwayne Doig - now the Bulls’ vice-president - a book outlining all their combined dismissals. It featured everything from the opposing sides, to the batsmen’s names, to the runs they scored, to what round of what season it was. Turner’s partner Kim was also introduced to cricket when Cambo encouraged her to play ... in a competition made up almost entirely of boys. “He encouraged her, and just said she had the same opportunity to play as everyone else, that she had every right,” Turner said proudly. “Everyone was exactly the same at the club, when it came to Cambo. “He treated everyone the same - with respect - and it was just such an easy time with him around.” Doig’s early memories of Cambo were through junior footy at Cranbourne, and when he later made the switch to play his cricket at Cardinia, their paths crossed again. While Doig is known by many as a champion spinner, it was during his footy career that Cambo was a particular influence. “Cambo actually got me the job as senior playing coach at Lang Lang, and he was my chairman of selectors in 2005,” he recalled. “The support he gave me over so many years through both cricket and footy - he’d definitely meant something very special to me.” And Doig knows he’s part of an expansive club, in that regard. “What’s clear through some of the Facebook stories that people have been telling about him is that he made time for anyone - he’d always put the effort into people, and that reflects on what people have said about him,” Doig said. “I just remember on the Thursday nights sitting around the selection table at the footy club - the laughs we had that year were something I’ll always remember. “I took it pretty tough once the news (of his passing) came through, because even if it was the smallest thing, he’d make the effort with people. “The way he treated people really rubbed off on me - everyone deserves to be given some time, and to be spoken to respectfully.” Ian Campbell is survived by his wife Karen; his children Lisa, Nicole, Daniel, Ricky, Samantha, and Jamie; and his 17 grandchildren. ish most about your footy career.” Two of Porter’s biggest mentors within the Bulldogs’ playing group - fellow Gippy boy Josh Dunkley, and Tom Liberatore - have shown him what it takes to forge a career at the highest level, and now he’s hell-bent on taking his chance with both hands. “Dunks was super with showing me what it takes to be an AFL footballer in terms of workrate and how hard you have to work, and Libba has been awesome as well,” Porter said. “He’s my favourite player to watch and to play with - he’s just so hard at it and in-andunder. He’s exactly the type of footballer I want to be, and he’s been really good off the field too. The more games I play, the more I can apply myself and the more time I can spend around those guys, hopefully I can play more and more like them as my career progresses because they’re great role models to have.” Porter spoke about the frenetic pace and toughness of his debut game, and that it took a while for him to settle into the conditions. But once he did, he made sure he soaked it all in. “It’s something I’ve dreamed of ever since I was a little kid and I worked so hard to get there,” Porter said of his debut. “I tried to have that balance of enjoying the game, but also knowing we had a job to do and a win to get. “To win like that was great, and I couldn’t ask for much more out of my debut, to be honest. It was such a great win, and the boys really supported me out there and I got my hands on the footy a couple of times, which was nice as well. “Nothing in my career up until this point has come easy, so it was only fitting that my first win came in a close contest. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Straight after the win over the Suns, Beveridge gave an insight into why Porter is held in such high regard at the club. “(He’s a) very, very popular character at our football club. He’s such a great person,” he said. “(He’s a) really caring, and a terrific teammate. The 21 who played with him tonight couldn’t wait to take the field with him. “We’ve got a lot of affection for everyone at our club, but Cal has got under everyone’s skin. He’s just such a terrific young fella.”

“Anything that’s hard-earned feels even sweeter once you achieve it.” After making his long-awaited AFL debut at the age of 21, it’s clear to see Officer favourite son Cal Porter possesses wisdom well beyond his years. In speaking to the Star News after the Bulldogs’ hard-fought five-point Round 8 win over the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium last Thursday night, Porter spoke at length about just what his debut game meant to him - and the importance of the journey to get there. He’s had to prove himself time and again throughout his career so far, and it’s a challenge he relishes. And having lived with the likes of Bulldogs team mates Ben Cavarra and Billy Gowers, who’ve forged their own less traditional paths into the AFL, Porter has learned countless invaluable life lessons already. “Living with those guys and seeing their journeys gave me some great inspiration and some great perspective, just to know that if you think you’re doing it tough, there’s always someone who’s doing it just as hard,” he said. “They gave me a lot of inspiration, guidance and advice, just to continue to believe in myself and to know that, regardless of when you get there, it’s not if it’s when. “My friends and family helped a lot with that as well. I think that belief is what got me there in the end. “That hard work I did to get there made it even sweeter than it would have been if I’d played (AFL footy) earlier.” Porter finished with nine disposals, four tackles, and a seemingly endless number of pressure acts in just 56 per cent game time as the Bulldogs prevailed over the impressive, rapidly-improving young Suns 7.9 (51) to 6.10 (46). Crucially for his side’s cause, Porter played out the clash despite copping a knock to his shoulder earlier in the contest. It caused what Bulldogs medical services manager Chris Bell described as “a minor grade AC injury”, which is set to see Porter miss the next one to two games as part of a no-risk approach. But Porter relished every single second of his debut game and made sure he soaked it in, particularly given he lined up alongside great mate Cody Weightman. The Beaconsfield product and former Dandenong Stingray is also still in the formative stages of his own career. “Cody has been super and I think it’s great we’ve ended up at the same place because even before we’d both been picked up, we’d done some training together and our parents’ houses are only five minutes apart,” Porter explained. “We’d spent a lot of time together previously, so the fact we’ve ended up at the same club is just amazing. I’m sure Cody can attest to this, but it’s just such a great club to be at. “The reactions I got from the boys - and the reactions Cody got - when they heard the news we were debuting were amazing, and even the Powerade shower in the song afterwards was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. It’s something I could have never imagined.” Porter said the culture of acceptance at the Bulldogs was key in helping him fit in so seamlessly into the group. “We’ve got a lot of unique characters at the club, and I think that’s the message - that we accept everyone,” he said. “Bevo (senior coach Luke Beveridge) is awesome with that - at just letting everyone be themselves. Him letting me get up and tell jokes and things like that is just another little part of it. It’s something I like to do and the boys get a kick out of it too. They’re little things like that which let me by myself and make me feel comfortable.” Fittingly, it was after Porter told one of his trademark jokes to the group at training that he was given the news of his debut. His laidback style and easy-going nature is testament to his quality upbringing, and his time spent honing his skills as a junior at Starling Road in Officer. “It was a great place to play my junior footy and it’s really set me up to succeed at the next level,” he explained. “I’ve got a lot of lifelong friendships from that club, and I’m sure I will from the Bulldogs as well - and that’s one of the things you cher-
