“I certainly wouldn’t even assume that a New Zealand-style lockdown will address the issues that we have,” Professor Sutton said.

“Obviously people were very constrained during that four week period in New Zealand but New Zealand didn’t have significant community transmission and it was a much more straight forward contact tracing process.

“So I wouldn’t make assumptions that harder, more constrained lockdown is necessarily the way to go.”

Residents in locked down areas, including Cardina Shire, will face a $200 fine if they are caught without a face mask in public from Thursday 23 July.

Exempt from the new rule include those who have a medical reason, children under 12 and those who have a professional reason.

munity on Monday 20 July, principal Ray Squires said staff and students weren’t required to take any further precautionary action.

“I would like to reassure you that we took immediate action as soon as we became aware of the situation and sought advice from DHHS and the Department of Education and Training (DET),” Mr Squires said.

“I can reassure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our whole school community, and we have followed the advice from DHHS and DET on this matter.

“I ask you to please respect the privacy of the staff member and encourage the community to support each other during this time.”

Stolen credit card spree

By Jessica Anstice A brazen thief went on a spending spree after breaking into an Officer man’s work van and stealing a wallet, iPad and tools.

The victims, Bee and Jacob Hocken, were left feeling violated, angry and deflated, when they discovered that the thief had messed with their livelihoods.

Mr Hocken woke up to go to work about 5.30am on Tuesday 14 July, when he received a notification from the pair’s bank account of suspicious activity.

It was soon revealed that the offender had broken into his locked work van, which was parked on Avatar Way in Officer, earlier that morning at about 12.48am.

Mr Hocken’s credit card had been used the same night at 7/11 on Princes Highway in Officer.

The culprit made four transactions using the card’s paywave function, including one at Coles Express in Berwick and online purchases - spending in excess of $700.

According to the bank’s records, the 7/11 transaction was made at 1.39am, while the Coles Express purchase was at 1.53am.

After posting CCTV footage to social media, another resident who had recognised the offender, made contact with Ms Hocken.

“Someone messaged me saying the same person from the 7/11 footage had broken into his dad’s work van three or four days earlier,” she said.

“We’ve also found out by somebody else that the same guy attempted a home invasion where he and his children were living in.”

To replace the Milwaukee hand and power tools tools alone, Ms Hocken estimates it will cost the pair up to $8000, as Mr Hocken had slowly accumulated them over the last 10 years.

Ms Hocken said the incident is likely to significantly put the couple back financially.

“My husband has had a tough time working as he has no tools and almost feels lost and useless,” she said.

“Our goals of having children and starting a family have even been put on hold.

“I’m struggling to sleep at night and paranoid as his crimes seem to be escalating and that I’m scared he may even invade our home.”

These past two weeks have been an emotional roller coaster for the Hockens, as their beloved family dog Harper was incredibly unwell the week prior to the crime.

Ninja Steve gives his all

By Brendan Rees Stay-at-home dad Steve Taylor-Madin says he will give his all in his quest to become Australian’s next ninja warrior.

Nicknamed “Monkey Steve” because his daughter says he’s “always climbing”, the 37-year-old of Narre Warren will be a contestant on Channel Nine’s reality smash hit, Australian Ninja Warrior when season four returns on 26 July.

And the stakes have been raised with the addition of the daunting Power Tower.

Mr Taylor-Madin says he’s normally “quiet, shy, and reserved” and has never taken on a challenge of “this scale” as he joins 140 ninjas to claim the $100,000 prize.

“Having this physical exercise along with the mental challenge of the obstacle, that’s been huge for me.”

But he admits: “I had every bit of confidence in myself in my ability.”

At 69 kilograms and 171cm tall, the former cycling retail manager hopes his agility and “super high” jumping ability will get him across the line.

His training regime has included gym exercises, rock climbing, cycling, running with his dog, monkey bar climbing, and “bucket loads of pull-ups”.

“Instead of sitting on the sidelines I would be out there on the monkey bars,”he says of the times he took his nine-year-old daughter Evelyn to a park.

“That was essentially good training. It’s a lot more fun, you don’t feel like you’re working out as such.”

He adds his daughter was actually the reason that he applied for the show and describes himself as an “overgrown child” who loves to have his nails painted by his daughter.

Steve hits the obstacle course on the Australian Ninja Warrior TV reality show. at the age of 21 while BMX riding in Cranbourne, which took 10 years to properly recover.

He’s also a keen photographer and says his nerves will be “right up there” as he faces the camera and lights for the first time.

“I’m always behind a camera but very, very rarely am I in front of the camera.”

Brother ends for Sarah

By Jessica Anstice The Big Brother journey has ended for the pocket rocket who those in the reality TV house dubbed their little sister.

Pakenham’s very own reality star, Sarah McDougal, made it into the final five.

The 19-year-old was evicted from the Big Brother house during Monday night’s episode.

In an interview with Pakenham Officer Star News, Sarah revealed her favourite memory in the Big Brother house and how far she thinks she would have gotten in the game if the public was voting.

Sarah said she wasn’t surprised when Big Brother host Sonia Kruger called out her name in the eviction ceremony.

“I definitely wasn’t surprised because I knew where the numbers would lie unfortunately,” she added.

“I was definitely proud of myself leaving the house because I made it until the second last day.

“It was such a surreal feeling knowing that I would be going back into the real world though and would get to see my phone - mind blowing that I actually did that.”

After walking out of the Big Brother house doors, the first thing Sarah did was call her family and boyfriend.

“They all were screaming and freaking out, so that was crazy,” she recalled.

“I also looked up the coronavirus statistics because that was so, so shocking to hear in the house.”

After living on mostly staples for six weeks, Sarah said she indulged in a delicious burrito bowl from Mexican fast food chain Guzman y Gomez as her first meal out of the house.

Reflecting on her time in the Big Brother house, she believes her long-lasting time in the game came down to strategy.

“The entire time I was playing a game that no one realised I was playing,” she said.

“I aligned myself in every social group to make sure I wasn’t in the firing line and I pride myself on how hard I strategically played the game.

“Definitely a big social threat that everyone underestimated.”

When the final 10 housemates were announced, they were treated to a Mexican fiesta night which was Sarah’s favourite memory in the house.

“It was such a fun filled, loving night and we all genuinely enjoyed each other’s company,” she said.

“We also got some margaritas so it definitely was a highlight.”

From lazing around, talking, swimming and working out, on the housemates’ down days, Sarah said there wasn’t a whole lot to do in order to keep occupied.

“Despite what is actually shown on TV there is hardly anything to do all day,” she said.

In the original Big Brother game, the housemates nominate and Australia votes, however in this new version, it was up to the players to vote.

may not have stayed as long as she did.

“I feel like Australia didn’t get the opportunity to see me much earlier on in the series so I don’t know if I would’ve stayed as long,” she said.

“But towards the end Australia definitely wanted an underdog to take it out and I think they loved that I played an individual and independent game so who knows.”

The Pakenham teen received an enormous amount of support from the Cardinia Shire community while she was in the spotlight.

“The support I’ve received from Pakenham is mind blowing,” she said.

“Everyone has been beyond supportive and I couldn’t be more thankful. I really love

the community spirit.”

As with most reality TV shows, it’s often found that contesters are portrayed in a different light.

Although according to Sarah, everyone in the house was portrayed exactly how they are in real life - except for one.

“The only person I would question the editing for would be Dan probably,” she said.

“He’s much more funny and loving in real life. But other than that everyone is exactly how they’re shown on the TV, whether they want to admit it or not.

“Of course the audience doesn’t see everything but that was to be expected.”

she said it was an “absolutely surreal, once in a lifetime opportunity”.

“The things I experienced in that house were absolutely off the charts and it’s the best thing I have ever decided to do.”

Sarah said she had big things planned for the future, including YouTube videos, and major sponsorship opportunities through her growing social media channels.

“I have so many things planned! So many companies and management agencies have reached out with really exciting opportunities so that’s crazy,” she said.

“I’m also starting up a YouTube channel for people to be able to see my adventures after going on Big Brother.”

Cooking up a storm in lockdown

By Brendan Rees A Casey charity supporting people from culturally diverse backgrounds will set up an emergency food relief centre to help those hit hard by the pandemic.

United Cultural Support Inc (UCSI) will hand out food packages to vulnerable members of the community every Wednesday at Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park as demand for food surges.

President of the UCSI Sadia Ali said although the service was primarily for the people seeking asylum and refugees, the widercommunity who had also been badly affected by the crisis were also welcome to collect a food parcel.

Due to social distancing, 10 hard-working volunteers will assist in the hand-out of packages which will contain non-perishables and fresh fruit and vegetables.

“To further support the vulnerable members of the community during this hard time, in cooperation with UCSI, Casey Multi-Faith Network will be providing warm clothes and resources to the members of the community,” Ms Ali said.

The relief centre is made possible thanks to the partnership of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Ms Sadia said many people suffering were not entitled to government benefits or did not have access to the Medicare health care system.

“We thought we were going to provide 50 boxes to the families but since we have advertised it has gone to triple their demand.”

The relief centre will be held at Arthur Wren Hall (16-20 Stuart Avenue, Hampton Park) every Wednesday from 22 July for six weeks from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

No appointment is required for the individuals. Organisations supporting people seeking asylum and refugees are asked to book in advance for clients to arrange food packages.

Car ploughs into home

By Brendan Rees A family has had a lucky escape after a car ploughed into their front bedroom in Berwick on Thursday 16 July.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Homestead Road after reports an out-of-control car had crashed into a single-storey house, causing structural damage about 3.40pm.

A Victoria Police spokesman said Casey Highway Patrol were investigating and have charged a 36-year-old Berwick man, who returned a positive drug test and was found to be driving on a suspended licence.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics assessed one person on scene but did not require transport to hospital.

Narre Warren State Emergency Service crew leader Marcus Denning said the driver was out of the car by the time crews arrived.

According to Mr Denning, it’s believed the offending car, a Toyota Camry, had lost control and collided with another parked vehicle before careering off the road and taking down a neighbour’s fence before finally coming to rest at the house’s front bedroom.

Mr Denning said fortunately no one was injured in the crash, with an Indian couple and their two children in another section of

the house at the time.

“It’s gone through the fence ... from where it’s hit the car it’s probably slowed,“ he said, following reports the car was allegedly speeding.

He said the couple of the home were visibly “shaken up” and “couldn’t believe” what had happened.

Mr Denning said all the front windows were broken, leaving a substantial amount of glass on the ground as crews used acro-props to stabilise the house and placed tarps over the windows.

Jafri Katagar, whose car struck by the Camry while it was parked on Homestead Road, said he was inside his home working on a university assignment when he heard a “loud bang”.

A devastated Mr Katagar said his car, a Volkswagen Golf, was wrecked and later declared a write-off by his insurance company after being towed away at the scene.

Mr Katagar said it was the third car he has had to buy in the past year after two previous cars he had were also written-off after being struck by other vehicles on Homestead Road.

“I have only used the car for 72 days. Now I have to start looking for another car to buy,“ he said. “I don’t know what’s going on. The road signs need to be clearly marked and parking spaces need to be allocated. At the moment it’s not safe.”

A CFA spokesman said some smoke was initially reported at the scene but no fire erupted.

A flexible class approach Officer’s St Brigid’s Primary School has been busy preparing online resources and activities for students to undertake remotely, as primary school children begin Term 3 at home.

The school has adapted their approach after the successful implementation of remote learning in Term 2, offering extra support and flexible learning conditions for families and their varied needs.

Students have collected a take home learning pack and will receive daily emails and videos from their teacher, as well as regular encouragement and feedback.

Digital platforms such as the Dojo app, Google Classroom and Google Meets will all be used to keep students on track.

Classroom teachers will also be calling parents every week to check in on their child’s progress and provide assistance where possible.

St Brigid’s Primary School principal Ken Gale extended his appreciation to staff, students and parents for how well they handled the first round of remote schooling and their positive attitudes to the new school term.

“Remote learning has been an opportunity for our community to come together and support one another, which reinforces the notion that educating our children is a partnership between staff, students and parents,” Mr Gale said.

“We’ve seen everyone working as a collective to further develop positive relationships and ensure every student continues learning to the best of their abilities while at home.”

By Jessica Anstice In a remote twist, junior school students at Berwick’s Beaconhills College found an entertaining way to learn more about the cultural backgrounds of their classmates.

Grade one students enjoyed sharing photos of themselves via Zoom dressed in their cultural clothing - with one student dressing as a slice of pizza.

The junior school students are currently learning from home or are based at school as part of Beaconhills’ on-campus blended program.

Grade one co-ordinator Robynne Quinn said the lessons aimed to give students an appreciation and understanding of other cultures and how different cultures make our world an exciting and fun place in which to live.

“Children learned that culture is the way we live - it’s the clothes we wear, the foods we eat, the languages we speak, the stories we tell and the ways we celebrate.”

Covid support welcomed

By Jessica Anstice A new program to help community members who are experiencing loneliness or social disconnection during the coronavirus pandemic is being delivered to residents in the Cardinia Shire. The Community Activation and Social Isolation (CASI) initiative is set to offer social, emotional and practical support for people who are isolated.

Cardinia Shire Council has received funding from the State Government to deliver the program to the community, in partnership with the Red Cross, the Department of Health and Human Services and local providers.

Support might include wellbeing checkins, assistance with video chatting to stay connected with family, linking people with online social and community activities, or providing

help to run errands, collect items from the shops or with online applications.

Residents needing support can call the Covid-19 hotline on 1800 675 398 then choose option 3.

They will then speak to a Red Cross volunteer who has been specially trained to support people who might be distressed or anxious.

The Red Cross volunteer will connect callers with the right support or refer them to the council to connect them with local services and organisations.

Alternatively, those wanting support can call the council directly on 1300 787 624 to speak with a CASI support officer.

If you know of someone who may benefit from this support, you can also contact the Covid-19 hotline and get assistance on how to

encourage others to seek support.

Cardinia Shire mayor Jeff Springfield said the council welcomed the funding for the much-needed initiative.

“Council is well placed to be able to help provide local, practical support to people struggling in our community,” he said.

“We’re proud that council is able to help deliver this important program.

“We look forward to working in close partnership with the Red Cross and our many wonderful local organisations to assist our most vulnerable community members.”

Cr Springfield said there is no doubt that “there are more people than ever who are feeling alone and a bit lost at sea due to Covid-19.

“For people who were already quite isolated, Covid-19 is exacerbating this due to re-

strictions and the need to physically distance.

Others are needing to self-isolate due to age or poor health.

“And then there are others who don’t usually experience loneliness, but who are missing regular face-to-face interaction and struggling with the many changes that Covid-19 has brought to our lives.

“We hope this will be a valuable and comforting service in what is a lonely and difficult time for many.”

The council is currently working on a local support network directory of organisations able to offer support and relief services during Covid-19.

What prostate cancer support groups are doing in iso

By Denis Green - convenor, South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group Prostate Cancer and support groups for other types of cancer normally meet face-to-face on a regular basis.

They provide information, friendship and support to people suffering from the effects of cancer and the treatments that they may be going through.

Up until February this year, the South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group was meeting every month at the Dandenong RSL. It is important not only for the men themselves, but also for their carers and partners to have access to support mechanisms when they need them.

As we all know in Victoria, our first round of Covid-19 Lockdown brought an immediate end to community meetings of any kind, including cancer support groups.

In fact, staying at home was even more important for people with cancer than for the general population, because some of us are at considerably higher risk of contracting coronavirus.

This is due to the fact that many people undergoing cancer treatments have a compromised immune system as a side-effect (for example chemotherapy or radiation therapy).

Added to that, even without treatment side-effects, many men in prostate cancer support groups are aged 70 or higher, so are already at higher risk of coronavirus.

And then, just as we were beginning to see a possibility for recommencing face-to-face meetings, we in Melbourne are back in Lockdown - and for a longer period!

So, what are we doing to continue to provide support to our members during this time?

In some ways it’s even more important than ever, as being forced to stay at home can aggravate some of the emotional and mental stresses on people living with cancer.

Up until February this year, the South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group was meeting every month at the Dandenong RSL. First, our group leaders make phone contact with our members on a regular basis to provide encouragement and see if there are any specific needs that we may be able to help with.

We find that our members are generally looking after themselves and their health needs well, but always appreciate hearing a friendly voice on the phone.

Second, coronavirus lockdowns and forced work-from-home situations has seen a massive rise in the use of online meeting technologies - such as Zoom.

South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group - along with many other prostate and different cancer support groups - quickly seized on this as a way to maintain contact and provide ongoing information and resources to members.

So far, we have held Zoom meetings each month from April to July and we will continue doing so until it is safe to recommence face-to-face meetings.

As with our normal meetings, we’ve been fortunate to get willing support from expert speakers who do their presentations in the Zoom meeting, showing slides or videos on the screen just as they would if presenting in a normal meeting and with a question-andanswer session also.

Our online speakers have included a prostate cancer researcher from Monash University and a pathologist from Peter McCallum Cancer Centre.

In July, to acknowledge the need for support in managing the extra stress and anxiety during lockdown, our speaker from Bolton Clarke was an expert in managing stress through mindfulness.

Some prostate cancer support groups have not been able to hold online meetings and so our group has invited their members to join our Zoom meetings if they wish - a really easy thing to do when it’s online, as opposed to having to go to a physical meeting location.

So we’ve had people joining from other parts of Melbourne and as far away as Bathurst, NSW. The feedback from these meetings has been very positive, which makes it all worthwhile.

With 2020 being a difficult year, the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) is warning the public about the risks of employing an unregistered agent who may seek to convince potential clients that, due to the government stimulus measures, they can obtain unrealistically large tax refunds.

Chair of the TPB, Ian Klug said, ‘If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”. “ While an unregistered agent may promise large refunds, the taxpayers may leave themselves open to potentially thousands of dollars in tax bills and penalties.

“We are urging consumers to check the free online register of tax practitioners at tpb.gov. au/onlineregister and guard against putting their financial and personal information at risk.”

It follows a recent case where an individual whose registration was terminated by the TPB for fraud and dishonesty, continued to operate by lodging 19 returns. The TPB put a stop to this conduct and noted that if the affected taxpayers had checked the TPB Register they would have found that the individual was not registered. Undertaking such a check may have saved these taxpayers time and money.

“We know that consumers place a large degree of trust in their practitioner but where the practitioner betrays that trust by putting their client’s interests and integrity of the tax system at risk, we will not hesitate to take action against them.”

Chatsfield’s new future

By Brendan Rees After struggling to find the right home, Chatsfield, a 13-year-old gelding, is enjoying greener pastures.

The former racehorse was surrendered to the Pearcedale RSPCA centre from a private home in 2019 but thanks to Racing Victoria’s new pathway program for thoroughbreds, Chatsfield has an opportunity to start a new life.

The pilot program called RESET - Racehorse, Evaluation, Support, Education and Transition - is aimed at supporting horses that have struggled to find a new home after the end of their racing careers.

Chatsfield, who finished last in his only career start at Echuca in 2011 before being retired the next year, is one of the first horses to receive a leg up through the program.

He is now being retrained in Garfield by RV

“There will no doubt be ups and downs as there is retraining any horse for a new career, but I’m confident we can reset Chatsfield for the next phase of his life after racing,” Ms Porter said.

RSPCA Victoria head of operations Tegan McPherson said Chatsfield was one of 43 horses that came into the care of RSPCA in the 2019-20 financial year.

“There are hundreds of horses like Chatsfield across the state needing homes,” she said.

“Retraining programs like the RESET Program provide an opportunity for a fulfilling second career in a different discipline.”

The program, which was announced on 16 July, will initially welcome 10 horses, with an additional 20 to join within the first two months.

I have had the privilege of working with many family businesses over the past few years and particularly enjoy this since family members naturally have much more skin in the game but are also typically very passionate about getting the business to succeed.

However, on occasions the business roles and responsibilities can get blurred by the family relationships, for example if all family members share equally (or proportionately) in the proceeds of the business success, how do you determine who makes what decisions and who reports to whom? A staff member will necessarily tend to view a family member as more senior, so the potential exists for confused reporting lines and misaligned priorities. I have seen this cause frustration and confusion and unfortunately in some cases even broken family relationships, so how do you reconcile the relationships conundrum?

There are a couple of things that I have found to work well.

First off, if there are multiple family members with a vested financial interest in the business, it is a good idea to set up a separate Board (often as a Trust) which enables proceeds from the business to be distributed in a fair and equal manner according to business performance and each individual’s stake in the business. If the Board meets on a regular basis, it also gives all members an opportunity to get a firsthand view of how the business is performing without interfering in the daily operations. This is an important point since the Board’s role is to ensure proper corporate governance, look after stakeholder interests and select the CEO, it is not to run the business

from an operational perspective. Creating a separate Board then enables family members to have an equal say on business governance without hampering the operational execution of the business.

Business operation belongs with the CEO and the management team and each family member’s role within the business should be a function of their skillset and expertise (as it would be for anyone filling a position in the company) not simply because they are a Board member. It is also possible that family members may fulfill several roles within the business.

This is where an organisation chart is particularly helpful. It may be tempting to think of the humble Org Chart as something only big companies need or simply showing who reports to whom, but in practice it fulfills many critical functions. Businesses often go astray when priorities within the business are not aligned, so creating and publicizing an Org Chart is essential for clearly identifying who is responsible for setting whose priorities as opposed to just showing who is who’s boss. Further it should clearly define who is responsible for which particular business function thereby reducing the possibility of duplication of effort or things falling through the cracks. It is a great way to describe career progression within the business, especially for more junior staff and finally forms an essential basis for succession planning, i.e. who would do what should a particular person decide to leave the organisation. A car collided with a garbage truck in Pakenham on Friday.

Car trashed in crash

By Jessica Anstice A car collided with a garbage truck in Pakenham on Friday 17 July.

Ambulance Victoria and Cardinia Highway Patrol were called to the crash on Fallingwater Drive about 12.50pm.

The Cleanaway garbage truck was collecting rubbish along Algerd Way when a dark blue Holden Commodore turned left into the residential street.

Police believe the driver of the car, a 53-year-old Pakenham woman, was startled by the sun and as a result hit the truck that was being driven by a 38-year-old Dandenong man.

While no one was injured, an ambulance was called to the scene as a precaution and to assess the two drivers, as well as the woman’s three young children.

Police confirmed that neither drivers were at fault.

Extra stops for buses

By Jessica Anstice Two new bus services connecting three south east suburbs with trains, education and healthcare services will be delivered by the State Government.

Buses 888 and 889 will have new routes that will begin operating in March next year providing better public transport coverage to Clyde and Clyde North.

The new bus services will operate seven days a week - between 6am and 9.30pm on weekdays, 7am and 9pm on Saturday and 7.30am and 9pm on Sundays.

Route 888 will run to a 60-minute frequency from Patterson Road in Clyde, along BerwickCranbourne and Clyde roads towards Berwick station.

Route 889 will run to a 40-minute frequency rom Skylark Boulevard in Clyde North, continuing on Grices and Clyde roads and finishing at Berwick station.

Both routes will provide connections to important locations including Eden Rise Village Shopping Centre, Federation University Berwick, Chisholm Institute and Casey Hospital.

Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale and Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards announced that new bus stops will also be installed along each route.

“We are delivering new bus options for people in Melbourne’s fastest growing areas,” Ms Richards said.

“The south east’s population is booming - and that’s why we’re continuing to build frequent, reliable public transport for growing communities.”

The Berwick station bus interchange will be relocated to the station’s south by February 2021 as part of level crossing removal works, including the redevelopment of the station, which will be complete in 2022.

“It is just brilliant we have two new bus routes coming to Clyde and Clyde North,” Ms Crugnale added.

“It is such a growing area and I am so pleased people will be able to jump on a bus and get to where they need to go.”

The new bus services are funded through the State Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution program.

NEWS Across greater Melbourne, people have headed back into lockdown, this time with a little more understanding under their belts of what to expect. MAEVE BANNISTER surveys the suburbs, sharing some of the lessons learned from the earlier isolation period.

Lessons learned from iso Greater Melbourne and Mitchell Shire residents are once again facing stage three lockdown restrictions after a surge in coronavirus cases.

Although it feels like the same circumstances as in mid-March, this time there is the benefit of experience, a crucial advantage that will be a guide through the next several weeks.

Frankston resident Beverly Allen says she’s been exploring her creative side over the past few months, improving her garden, learning how to play the ukulele from YouTube videos and making mossariums, miniature ecosystems inside glass domes.

“We have to try and rise above the things we can’t do at the moment and I think the secret to doing that is using our creativity,” she says.

Beverly has a lung condition which makes her more vulnerable to the coronavirus and she has mostly been inside, apart from a daily walk with Angelita her 17-year-old silky terrier.

She says there have been many days when she hasn’t spoken to another person and going into a second lockdown, she hopes more people will call instead of text.

“I suppose out of anything, I wish people wouldn’t only text this time and make a phone call instead, because to hear another person’s voice is just wonderful,” she says.

She also recommends the simple joy of letter writing to keep in contact with friends you can’t see in person.

“You can include a bookmark or something small that you’ve made with your letter and it’s a great thrill to get that and then spend some time answering it,” she says.

A survey cited by Headspace reported one in two Australians felt isolated at the peak of the first lockdown.

Glen Eira resident Alison Church says she hopes everyone will check in regularly with the people in their lives who they can’t see at the moment.

“Six weeks is a very long time to be in lockdown, especially when the rest of the country is easing their restrictions,” she says.

“More than ever before, now is the time to look out for your friends, neighbours, colleagues and make sure they’re doing ok.”

In March, people needed time to adjust to the restrictions, but now there is some knowledge about how to keep a positive mindset.

Personal trainer Christine Meister says she is noticing a significant change with her clients during this second lockdown.

“My clients are eager to keep up with their fitness this time around because they realised during the first lockdown that not exercising really affected their mental health,” she says.

“The biggest lesson I learned and tried to pass on to my clients during the first lockdown was to just keep going and do what you can, putting one foot in front of the other, taking the dog for a walk, or dancing in your bedroom,” “Whatever ‘moving’ means to you that you can handle at the moment, I strongly encourage people to find it and do it because I promise it will make you feel better,” she says.

Teachers found themselves having to learn new ways to engage their students during the first school term of online remote learning.

Secondary teacher Ruth Myers says there are many things she is refining this time around.

“During the first lockdown we were aware from research emerging out of other countries that students were really only getting through about 60 percent of what they would normally get through in the classroom, but I’m not sure teachers took that on properly to reduce the pressure on themselves,” she says.

“This time I’ll try to keep in mind that the learning outcomes are going to be a little less than what they are for face-to-face, but I think everyone knows that teachers are working as hard as they can and trying to get across as much of the curriculum they can while keeping kids engaged.”

Ruth says her students were good at adapting to the new style of learning, and she enjoyed finding new ways to teach using technology.

The lockdown garden is looking well loved in Berverly’s back yard.

Beverly believes having a hobby or picking up a new one helps pass the time.

“I’ll try to give more mind to my own teacher wellbeing and try to figure out how to not put so much pressure on myself, because that was one of the challenges during the last lockdown,” she says.

“I was so happy and excited to be back in the classroom last term, it was so wonderful, and to me it demonstrated once again how much I am in the right career, despite the remote learning challenges, and that’s been really lovely.”

And support for parents trying to homeschool their children has been a priority for the state government, funding family learning support programs through the Work for Victoria initiative.

Laura Slavin is part of the team mobilized by the Brotherhood of St Lawrence that has built a program to support parents in the Franklin, Mernda and Fitzroy areas.

Support workers will assist parents via virtual sessions to feel informed about how to best help their children with home learning and the transition back to classrooms.

“We want to help parents to set up inducive learning environments within their home and it’s about providing parents with someone to talk to and to be able to air some of the frustrations of being at home,” she says.

“It’s about making sure that we get through this time with our mental health intact and our family relationships still strong by the end of this.”

Laura hopes that parents will reach out and engage the service throughout the lockdown and afterwards.

Delicious Kanzi apples with their juicy crunch are in season and in abundance.

Kanzi apples have a delicious sweet and tangy taste, with their knock-out flavour coming from the variety’s parents - the sweet Royal Gala and the tangy Braeburn.

Kanzi apples were first introduced to Australia 10 years ago and have quickly become one of Australia’s favourite apples. In fact, growers have planted an extra 64,000 trees this year alone to help keep up with the demand.

Second generation apple grower Ian Cathels said despite a tough season, that was threatened by drought, bushfires and hail, there was an abundant crop of premium Kanzi apples.

“We have plenty of Kanzi apples for people to enjoy and supermarkets and greengrocers, across Australia, are well stocked,” said Mr Cathels, who grows Kanzi apples at his orchard in Batlow, NSW. Want to try Kanzi apples - try this delicious Kanzi apple bread in all is glory with chunks of fresh apple, walnuts and pecans throughout and a cinnamon icing drizzle to finish.

Prep time: 15-20 mins Cook time: 50-55 mins

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a standard loaf tin. For easy lift out, ensure the baking paper is higher than the tins edge.

2. Cream together the butter and caster sugar in a standard mixer until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla essence and one egg at a time, beating in-between until well combined. Scrape down the sides and base of the bowl as needed.

3. Add the milk and beat further until combined.

4. In a large mixing bowl, stir to combine the dry ingredients; flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and ground clove.

5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mix. Ensure the mixing speed is slow to allow it to just come together. Be careful not to over mix.

6. Gently fold in the chopped nuts followed by ¾ of the diced Kanzi apples.

· 125g unsalted butter · 1 cup caster sugar · 2 eggs · 1 tsp vanilla essence · cup milk · 1 ¾ cup all purpose flour · 1 ½ baking powder · ½ tsp baking soda · 1 ½ tsp cinnamon powder · ½ tsp ground clove · ½ cup roughly chopped walnuts or pecans · 3 medium size Kanzi® apples peeled and diced · 1 tbsp granulated sugar · Extra walnuts and pecans for the top Cinnamon Icing ½ cup icing sugar ¼ tsp cinnamon powder 4-5 tsp milk

level out with a spatula.

8. Add the remaining diced Kanzi apples and lightly push a few extra nuts into the top. Finish by sprinkling with granulated sugar.

9. Bake in the oven for 50 - 55 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.

10. Place on a cooling rack for 15 minutes before removing from the tin.

11. To make the cinnamon icing; combine the sifted icing sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl. Gradually mix in the milk with a spatula until you achieve a drizzle consistency that is not too runny. If it is, add a little more icing sugar.

12. Once cooled, place the cake on a serving plate or a sheet of baking paper. Drizzle the cinnamon icing over the top using a spoon, moving back and forth quickly over the cake to create the desired drizzle effect.

Back to the Birdbox

By Tania Phillips Remember back 18 months ago when people were tearing around the world wearing blindfolds thanks to Netflix’s wildly popular telemovie BirdBox? Well the story is about to continue - though no word if director Susan Biers and star Sandra Bullock will be back for feature film sequel.

American author Josh Malerman has finally released his much anticipated Birdbox sequel - Malorie.

So it’s time to unpack those blindfolds and head back to Malerman’s post-apocalyptic future world to discover what became of Malorie and her children.

In the old world there were many rules. In the new world there is only one: don’t open your eyes. In the seventeen years since the ‘creatures’ appeared, many people have broken that rule. Many have looked. Many have

lost their minds, their lives, their loved ones. In that time, Malorie has raised - Olympia and Tom - on the run or in hiding. Now grown, survival is no longer enough. They want freedom.

Don’t stray, stay home

By Mitchell Clarke Cardinia Shire residents caught straying from their suburbs to exercise or shop - without a good reason - could face a hefty fine of $1652 for breaching public health orders.

Premier Daniel Andrews re-issued yet another heartfelt plea for people in locked down areas to remain as close to home as possible.

“We will always try and provide clarity and advice but whenever you draw the line or make a ruling, there will always be some grey area,” he said.

“It is difficult to write a comprehensive rulebook for human behaviour. The best thing to do is err on the side of caution.

“If you have a question in your mind — should I be doing this — the answer almost certainly is no, you should not.”

A Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) spokesperson said that message hadn’t changed since the lockdown was reimplemented.

“The whole way through this, we’ve been very clear that Victorians must use their common sense and stay close to home,” the spokesperson said.

“Following the rules protects regional Victoria, our health system, and most of all the ones we love.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s work or study, care, shopping or exercise - under stage 3 restrictions in the past and now, you cannot travel further than you need to.”

Yet still the message isn’t getting through to some, with two carloads of people photographed attempting to walk the popular Mount Cannibal trail over the weekend - despite clear closure signs.

“There were four people in each car and they basically told me to F off,” a witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said.

The Premier urged people to stop trying to search for loopholes in the restrictions.

“Daily exercise is fine. A day trip where you are literally travelling 200km? No. That is not fine,” he said.

“If you can do it locally, please do it locally and if you don’t have to do it, then don’t.”

According to DHHS, people living in metropolitan Melbourne or the Mitchell Shire should exercise and use recreational facilities at the closest available location to their home.

Can you visit a shopping centre in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire?

If you need to shop, try to shop locally. This will help support local businesses and help slow the spread of Covid-19 by limiting travel and reducing large numbers of people coming into contact with each other.

My favourite coffee shop is a couple of suburbs over - can I go there?

No. You should not travel further than you need to.

What personal services are open?

Hairdressers and barbers may continue to operate.

Can I leave metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire to receive a personal service that is closed in my area?

No, you cannot leave metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire to receive a personal service that is open outside of these areas.

Can I go to the supermarket?

Yes. However, you should keep visits to a minimum. Make a list of the things you need, shop quickly and minimise the time you spend there. Ideally, only one person from your household should go to the supermarket at each visit to minimise the numbers of people in the supermarket at any one time.

Can I exercise with others?

You can exercise outdoors with people who normally live with you or with one other person outside your household. This includes taking a walk or walking the dog, yoga in the park, running, or bike riding. You and your exercise partner can also hire a personal trainer.

While exercising, you should keep at least

1.5 metres between yourself and others. You cannot exercise with another person in a manner than would mean you are less than 1.5m apart (e.g. in a double kayak).

Can I participate in community sport?

No. You cannot participate in community sport if you live in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

My favourite walking track is on the other side of the city. Can I still go there?

No. You should not travel further than you need to and you should use the walking tracks closest to your home. Victorians must use common sense and consideration when it comes to their activities. Lives are counting on it.

I live in Melbourne or Mitchell Shire. Can I undertake recreational activities like fishing?

Yes. If you live in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, you can leave home for permitted exercise and recreation activities that are outdoors and can be done by yourself, members of your household, or with one other person.

This includes, fishing, boating, surfing, recreational diving, learning to drive, or reading in a park. Exercise and recreational activities should be undertaken at the closest available locations to your home.

You must be able to maintain a 1.5 metre distance and no equipment should be shared.

You cannot leave metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire for exercise or recreational activities.

Can I go horse-riding if I live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire?

Yes. You can go horse-riding with one other person, plus an instructor if required. You should not travel further than you need to and you should horse ride at the closest available location to your home.

You need to ensure that you keep a physical distance of 1.5 metres from others.

Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency.

Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course.

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training.

She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated.

"I still owe everything to having those skills," she said.

"The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers.

"It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared."

The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham.

Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries.

Hearts to help

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east.

Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency.

In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities.

Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances.

Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old.

She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible.

"I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said.

"Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives.

"I love what I do - waking up and making a difference."

Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant.

Residents in locked down areas, including Cardina Shire, will face fines if they don’t wear a mask in public from Wednesday night.

If residents are caught not wearing a face covering in public or at work from 11.59pm on Wednesday, they could be fined $200.

Residents will not have to wear a mask when it is not practical, however they will be expected to carry one at all times.

“I understand this is a big shift aqnd that not being able to see each other’s faces might be confronting. But this virus is incredibly infectious - and this is about keeping people safe,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

“By covering our faces, we’re protecting ourselves, our families and every single Victorian. So please - just as you remember your house keys, please remember something to cover your face.”

In schools, teachers don’t have to wear a face covering while teaching - but students attending for VCE, VCAL or for onsite supervision will, while everyone will be expected to wear one on the way to and from school.

The State Government is set to work with Victorian industry and unions to provide advice to workplaces in the coming days.

Face coverings in regional Victoria continue to be recommended in situations where maintaining 1.5 metres distance is not possible - however regional residents will have to wear a mask when visiting metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire for one of the permitted reasons.

“The best way you can help keep community transmission low is by sticking to the coronavirus restrictions, keeping your distance and wearing a face covering whenever you leave home,” Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said.

you safe - and by covering your face, you’re helping to keep every Victorian safe.”

The State of Emergency will also be extended until 11.59pm on 16 August.

“We’ve extended the State of Emergency because we know our coronavirus fight is far from over,” Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said.

The Department of Health and Human Services has seen a decrease in the number of cases being spread between families - the majority of the outbreaks are now coming from settings where people are working closely together.

To address the increase, an inspection and enforcement blitz will be carried out in workplaces across the state.

WorkSafe, Emergency Management Victoria and Victoria Police will focus on at-risk workplaces, including distribution centres, call centres and meat processing centres.

And with a spike in cases in aged care settings, the State Government has been working closely with the Commonwealth on a range of measures, ensuring care workers are equipped to prevent the spread of coronavirus while providing quality care.

As the risk of transmission in aged care and health care settings remains high, from 22 July, visitation will be restricted to those defined as carers only, with a limit of one hour per day.

The government’s one-off $1500 worker support payment is still available to support workers who have been instructed to stay home because they’ve had a positive test or need to self-isolate as a close contact. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Cal’s name finally called By sports editor Russell Bennett Cal Porter knows the true meaning of hard work and sacrifice more than most young footballers his age.

The Officer product personifies the kind of sheer tenacity that can’t be taught, and a toughness that’s genuinely engrained.

It’s what’s held the now 21-year-old in such great stead over his footy journey so far - at community, elite junior, and VFL level.

And it’s what has him so well placed to succeed in the top flight, after finally getting his chance to debut for the Western Bulldogs after being selected with pick 74 in the 2017 national draft.

Porter knew going into the AFL system after starring for the Gippsland Power that nothing would be handed to him for free - that he’d have to fight and snarl his way into the Bulldogs’ senior side.

And in his third year in the system, he finally gets his chance - tonight (Thursday) at Metricon Stadium against the hometown Gold Coast Suns.

It comes just a week after one of the more memorable debuts in the AFL’s modern era from Porter’s great mate Cody Weightman last week against Essendon.

And, fittingly, Weightman was right there with a smile just as big as Porter’s when - at training - senior coach Luke Beveridge gave him the news he’d been longing to hear.

The Star News has spoken with Porter often throughout his journey so far. While he’s been made to bide his time, it’s clear the Bulldogs rated his progression as, about a year ago, they extended his deal at ‘The Kennel’ until at least the end of 2020.

Before he even got drafted, he gave a glimpse into a genuine maturity well beyond his years, saying of the elite pathway: “It’s a pretty ruthless system that not only forces you to push to the next game, but also ensures you’re going to get setbacks.

“It’s just about how you bounce back that shows everyone your character.”

It’s impossible to not be impressed by him, and his fellow Bulldogs clearly are. Their reaction upon hearing of his pending debut spoke volumes.

Shortly after Porter was drafted in late 2017, he gave the Star News a real insight into his mindset as an up-and-coming player.

“My family and I really had our minds around the nature of the (draft) system,” he said at the time.

“It can be quite ruthless at times and, with the whole nature of the draft, everything can change on the night. Sometimes even the recruiters aren’t sure what’s going to happen - so from that point view there were definitely no guarantees.”

Whether or not he would go on to be selected, Porter was prepared - having also applied for a double bachelor university degree in exercise science and education.

He knows just how important balance is, despite the at-times all-encompassing AFL world.

“Even though everyone enjoys their footy, it’s pretty full-on, especially for someone just entering the system like myself,” he said at the time.

“It’s definitely important to have a balance outside of footy and something to keep you going. Life as an AFL footballer, whether you’re successful or not, is very short-lived so it’s definitely important to have something after footy,

Porter said the strength of the Bulldogs’ culture was immediately obvious to him after the outpouring of congratulations he’d received from those in the club’s inner sanctum as soon as he was drafted.

“In terms of being a young player, I don’t think I could have asked for a better club to go to,” he said.

“They’ve got an outstanding culture.

“I couldn’t fault anything with the whole process - it really is a dream come true.

“I’d watched the whole draft and seen other players get picked and it got to the 70s and there was an order of clubs I’d spoken with and I thought that’d probably be the last roll of the dice.

“I think we got more and more nervous the longer it went. Even though I’d worked really hard (to be drafted) I still think I was super lucky.

“But now that I’m in the system it doesn’t matter if I went early in the draft or later - we all get the same opportunity. Everything is in my hands now - it’s up to me and how hard I want to work in terms of how much I’m going to develop.”

And now, thanks to that work ethic, a new dream is about to be realised.

Big V basketball is abandoned for season 2020

Basketball Victoria issued a series of key announcements earlier this month, with updates on a number of its major competitions.

The 2019/20 VJBL Championship season has been cancelled, along with the eagerly awaited Big V season - set to feature local associations including the Casey Cavaliers and Pakenham Warriors.

“With the re-introduction of Stage 3 restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne, we unfortunately have no alternative but to cancel the 2020 Big V season,” Basketball Victoria announced on its website.

The Australian Junior Championships have also been abandoned.

“Basketball Australia, in consultation with the state and territory associations, has determined the Australian Under-18 Championships, Under-16 Championships, and Kevin Coombs Cup will not proceed for 2020,” Basketball Victoria stated on its website.

“While significant efforts have been made

to reschedule these events, the fluid and unpredictable nature of the current situation surrounding Covid-19 has made it impossible for Basketball Australia to make a firm commitment to dates.

Weightman’s wait is over

By Nick Creely Chances are that Cody Weightman’s freakish debut mark and goal from deep in the pocket last Friday night will be replayed for many years to come.

The skill, the poise, the game sense and more importantly, the courage to take his chance - it was one memorable AFL debut from the Beaconsfield, Dandenong Stingrays and Haileybury product for the Western Bulldogs over the weekend.

The youngster - drafted with pick 15 in last year’s National Draft, among the first Stingrays selected - made an instant impact on the big stage at Metricon Stadium when he climbed high to take a contested mark in the pocket in the first quarter, before bending a 40-metre checkside straight through the middle of the big sticks.

It was as impressive as a first disposal at the highest level could possibly be.

In a debut where he continually chased the Essendon defenders, provided a presence whenever he was near it, and took his chances when they presented themselves in front of goal (slotting two majors for the evening), one thing stood out more than anything - it was impossible to wipe the smile off the face of a young player just honoured to be out there.

An even prouder moment for Weightman was the fact that experienced midfielder Mitch Wallis - a mentoring figure and a player the youngster lived with when he first came to the club - handed him his playing jumper when the debut was announced last Wednesday.

The rising star told the Star News that after doing all the hard work to get out there, it was an incredibly satisfying experience on the night.

“I didn’t get in the team at the start of the season, and I was probably a bit frustrated, but I just needed to work on a few things, but once I was able to put my best foot forward I

“I found the game at first so quick, and was taken by that a bit, but I did expect it to be honest.

“And as time went on and the game went on, I felt like I found my feet and I could really belong - the game was so fun to be a part of, the boys really got around me and made me feel like I belong at the level.

“That went a long way to me having an okay game, but the team having success on the night.

“I had an absolute blast.”

jor catalyst for his ability to not overthink the game and approach it with an open mind.

“Bev just wanted me to relax, enjoy the experience and play my natural game on instinct, really,” he said.

“The boys getting around me was also really comforting, and I felt like I just needed to do what I do, and see what went right and what went wrong.

“He had a really open approach with me, and it really helped on the night.”

But was what going through Weightman’s head when he took a soaring mark deep in the pocket and prepared for his first kick at AFL level?

“It was quite interesting - I spoke to some of the boys after the game, and I honestly wasn’t really thinking a lot, so it probably helped having a clear head,” he said.

“I took the mark, and having that first touch is a relief in itself, so I was already on a positive note - I looked inboard and felt there was nothing that was overwhelmingly a better option.

“The best thing was I didn’t think about the post-result, whether it be celebrating, or missing, nothing like that was going through my head, and fortunately it helped me a lot.

“I backed myself, and I’ve always done that growing up, so I did that and fortunately enough it worked - there’s probably other players that would prefer to pass that one off, but for me, luckily I backed myself in and it went my way on the night.”

Whether it be for the Dandenong Stingrays in the NAB League, captaining Haileybury in the school competition, or with his local club Beaconsfield, the small forward has always had this same beaming smile across his face, and an infectious attitude that has rubbed off on his teammates. He also has football traits that basically can’t be taught.

In an incredible football journey that actually saw Weightman win his first premiership for his local club Beaconsfield in the Under 19s less than two years ago, where he won best afield on a rain-soaked day, to dominating for Haileybury as its captain in a three-peat in 2019 and the Dandenong Stingrays where he lit up Shepley Oval, the youngster said he’s been blessed to be involved with some incredible football programs.

“I’ve been quite lucky with the journey I’ve been able to take with school footy, the Stingrays and the local area footy,” he said.

“I didn’t even realise its been under two years (since winning the best afield medal with Beaconsfield) - it was a horrible day with the weather and they had a bloke all over me that day so it presented its own challenges.

“It was my first premiership technically, they don’t do the same set-up with the school ones, so that was a special moment.

“It was a different lead-up for me having not being able to play a lot of footy with those boys with the other commitments, but fortunately enough I was able to have a game that helped get our team over the line.

“Likewise with my AFL debut, its one i’ll remember for a long time.”

Weightman celebrates ‘that’ remarkable goal.

On a proud night for the Stingrays, Essendon also debuted fellow small forward Ned Cahill, a close mate of Weightman’s, and while the Bomber forwards found it tough going, the energetic youngster held his own and looks a player for the future.

Cahill ended the night with seven disposals, but provided great forward pressure and very nearly got on the end of a goal in the dying seconds of the contest.

Weightman said it was a particular honour to be debuting together with his great mate, despite being on opposing sides.

“We’ve become really close over the last few years, and to share the same special moment with him was even more than the dream,” he said.

“That was amazing, and even just having the moment after the game with him - you’ve got so much adrenaline going through you and its quite a bizarre feeling to be honest, and to share that feeling with him was pretty special.

“I have a little journal I write in, and it’s something I put in there as one of the highlights of the night.”

With Weightman entrenched in hub life in what has certainly been a different debut season at AFL level, the youngster spoke of how his mindset and approach are helping him forge forward.

“It’s a completely different contrast to what we were expecting coming into the year, but for me, its about the mindset you approach it with,” he said.

“As much as there is glooming negativity about what’s happening, and there is some scary stuff going on, there are overwhelmingly positive things poking its head out and you can pay a lot of attention to that.

“We’re definitely some of the fortunate ones at the moment, and a lot of people are doing it tough, so its always important to remember that.”

Weightman’s Doggies will come up against the red-hot Gold Coast Suns tonight (Thursday) at Metricon Stadium, in a clash the youngster expects to be hotly contested.

“They’re playing some great footy, for sure, and I think it’s their first blockbuster game,” he said.

“There’s absolutely no doubt they’ll come to play, and we expect our mob to do the same thing, so it sets the scene for a really good contest.”
