Pet: ‘no chance’

By Brendan Rees A deadly dog attack in Clyde has left a woman heartbroken over the loss of her five-year-old King Charles cavalier, that she described as “my baby”.

Shani Francis said she was walking back home with her dog Ruby along Hill Farm Drive when a big dog came “flying from behind” and locked its jaws on Ruby about 11.45am on Saturday 19 July.

“My mind went blank pretty quick ... this dog just came flying from behind and just grabbed Ruby and just wouldn’t let go. It was like crazy, just like split second.”

At the time Ms Francis, 27, said she was with her friend who had also been walking her dog Bucky, a boxer cross staffy, when the dog approached them out of “nowhere”.

“My instinct was to pull back on the lead so poor Ruby was literally in the air in this dog’s mouth because I’m trying to pull it out.”

She said a man then approached them who yelled at her friend to let go of his dog before grabbing Bucky “by the choker chain and yanked it”.

“My friend ended up grabbing the other dog by its scruff and it let go of Ruby.”

Ruby was raced to a vet where she underwent three surgeries to contain internal bleeding as well as the removal of a damaged kidney, but had sadly succumbed to her wounds two days later.

Ms Francis said the dog, which appeared to not be wearing a collar or a lead, had also attacked Bucky, causing “little bullet wounds”, but was slowly recovering.

According to Ms Francis, the dog was a black bull mastiff or a similar breed. She said man left the scene with the dog in a dark Jeep Cherokee and “did not say one word”.

Ms Francis said she had reported the incident to the council. She also called police but was told “they couldn’t do anything”.

By sharing her story, Ms Francis hoped to warn others and anyone with information to come forward.

Casey Council’s manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said council was investi-

gating the dog attack and had seized a “black dog” on the day of the incident, after it was found abandoned at council’s pound facility.

“A large black dog is suspected of having attacked two dogs, causing minor injuries to one,

Our spike in Covid

By Brendan Rees Casey has seen its worst one-day jump in Covid-19 cases recording 27 new cases, according to the state’s latest health data.

At the time of going to press Casey’s active cases stood at 103. In Greater Dandenong, there were seven further cases, with 44 active in the council area.

Three women with coronavirus aged in their 80s, 90s and 100s died overnight. So far, 42 Victorians have succumbed to the virus.

State-wide, there were 3147 active cases of

Covid-19, including 169 health care workers and 174 hospital patients. Thirty-six patients were in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Victoria Police said officers had fined 61 people for flouting rules in the 24 hours to Wednesday 22 July. Nineteen of the infringements were issued at vehicle checkpoints.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced face coverings would become mandatory from 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July, with people caught without them facing a $200 fine.

All students aged 12 and over and staff who

are attending school in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will be required to wear a face covering or mask when at school from Thursday, 23 July. Masks will not be mandatory for teachers while they are teaching students but should be worn at other times.

Specialist schools and primary schools are exempt from this rule.

However, most P-10 students in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will begin learning remotely and continue until at least 19 August.

Unwanted visit: Car ploughs into home

By Brendan Rees A family has had a lucky escape after a car ploughed into their front bedroom in Berwick on Thursday 16 July.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Homestead Road after reports an out-of-control car had crashed into a singlestorey house, causing structural damage about 3.40pm.

A Victoria Police spokesman said Casey Highway Patrol were investigating and have charged a 36-year-old Berwick man, who returned a positive drug test and was found to be driving on a suspended licence.

“He is expected to appear at court at a later date charged with drive whilst suspended, careless driving and exceeding the prescribed concentration of drugs,” the spokesman said.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics assessed one person on scene but did not require transport to hospital.

Narre Warren State Emergency Service crew leader Marcus Denning said the driver was out of the car by the time crews arrived.

According to Mr Denning, it’s believed the offending car, a Toyota Camry, had lost control and collided with another parked vehicle before careering off the road and taking down a neighbour’s fence before finally coming to rest at the house’s front bedroom.

Mr Denning said fortunately no one was injured in the crash, with an Indian couple and their two children in another section of the house at the time. “It’s gone through the fence ... from where it’s hit the car it’s probably slowed,” he said, following reports the car was allegedly speeding.

He said the couple of the home were visibly “shaken up” and “couldn’t believe” what had happened.

Mr Denning said all the front windows were broken, leaving a substantial amount of glass on the ground as crews used acroprops to stabilise the house and placed tarps over the windows.

Jafri Katagar, whose car struck by the Camry while it was parked on Homestead Road, said he was inside his home working on a university assignment when he heard a “loud bang”.

Dope crops seized More than 300 cannabis plants have been seized during two police raids in Keysborough and Narre Warren South.

Springvale Divisional Response Unit officers discovered a hydroponic crop and an electrical bypass at a premises in Parkmore Road Keysborough on 21 July.

They seized 207 plants from the address.

At a property in Lennon Court, Narre Warren South, police found 130 plants and an electrical bypass.

No occupants were at the addresses at the time, police say.

Police appeal for help Police are seeking public assistance to identify a man after an armed robbery in Berwick on Monday, 25 May. About 1.50am, a man approached the service counter at a Clyde Road petrol station. He then displayed a weapon and demanded money from the attendant. The man left the petrol station with $100 cash.

Police have released images of a man whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries.

He is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance. At the time of the offence he was wearing a dark zip up jacket, grey hoodie, black tracksuit pants and a black backpack.

A devastated Mr Katagar said his car, a Volkswagen Golf, was wrecked and later declared a write-off by his insurance company after being towed away at the scene.

Mr Katagar said it was the third car he has had to buy in the past year after two previous cars he had were also written-off after being struck by other vehicles on Homestead Road.

“I have only used the car for 72 days. Now I have to start looking for another car to buy,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going on. The road signs need to be clearly marked and parking spaces need to be allocated. At the moment it’s not safe.”

A CFA spokesman said some smoke was initially reported at the scene but no fire erupted.

A neighbour’s Volkswagen Golf was written-off after being struck on Homestead Road.

Rotary welcomes its new president

By Brendan Rees Bruce Armstrong has taken the reigns at the Rotary Club of Narre Warren after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the club’s 45th annual gala changeover dinner.

“I would like to thank past-president Keith Roberts for his great leadership over the last 12 months, especially the last few months,” Mr Armstrong said.

“My goals for this year are to continue the clubs support of Transit Soup Kitchen who provide meals, food supplies and other services for the local homeless people and families that are going through hard times.”

He said the club would also aim to provide and install play equipment and seating at the Harry Oaks Reserve on Kurrajong Road in Narre Warren.

“Hopefully in the not too distant future we can resume face to face meetings, doing Dads Matter barbecues and other community activities that Rotary are well known for in supporting our local community.”

The club will continue to hold Zoom meetings every Wednesday night. “If anyone is interested in joining us, please contact president@rotarynarrewarren.org.au,” Mr Armstrong said.

Two taken to hospital after crash

By Brendan Rees Two people have been taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition following a multiple-car crash in Clyde early on Tuesday 21 July.

Emergency services were called to Clyde-Five Ways and Ballarto about 6.30am following reports of a four-car pile up.

A Victoria Police spokesman said a Mitsubishi ute and a Nissan Maxima collided at the intersection about 6.25am.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a man in his 30s was taken to hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries while a man in his 50s was also taken to hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries.

Police have not indicated the cause of the incident at this stage.

Firefighters from Clyde fire brigade and Cranbourne fire station remained on scene shortly before 7.30am.

Workplace manslaughter is now a jailable offence.

By Brendan Rees Casey residents bunkered down at home say their frustration has gone “through the roof” as they experience internet drop-outs and phone reception problems.

And with a second round of remote learning beginning families are bracing themselves for more pain.

Rachel Heurea of Clyde, who is a disability worker with two children learning from home said her family’s NBN internet connection was “weak”.

“Without the internet we wouldn’t get any mobile connection as we can only make and receive calls using Wi-Fi calling,” she said.

“You often see people standing out the front of their houses on their mobiles trying to get connection.”

Other residents say it was “embarrassing” to tell their clients they had no phone reception while a Clyde mother said she worried if she had to call an ambulance for her son who is anaphylactic due to “power outages”.

Kenneth Diaz, an Optus phone customer, who runs his own bricklaying business, said he was in the middle of work when his internet cut-out and “couldn’t continue any work until very late that night”.

However, in a sigh of relief, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said she had received confirmation that a new Vodafone tower would be built for Clyde.

“We also had confirmation that Vodafone will also provide Telstra customers coverage.

Towers can be shared with other telco providers and this is done on a tower by tower case,” Ms Crugnale said.

“This is vital infrastructure for a new suburb, mobile connectivity is a 21st century expectation and it is metropolitan Melbourne after all and should not be an afterthought.”

An Optus spokesperson said some customers in areas of Lynbrook, Clyde and Berwick may have experienced disruptions to their NBN service due to an outage on 15 July but services had been fully restored.

A Telstra spokesperson said upgrades had been undertaken in Berwick to the mobile phone network “which means customers may notice a change in their coverage while we’re working on the site”.

“In areas around Merinda Park South, including Lynbrook, we’ve had to temporarily optimise the mobile network to ensure coverage for areas around a site which was damaged by fire in May. This means we’ve made some adjustments to nearby sites to cover the area which was being serviced by the damaged

tower which may mean some changes to coverage that people experience,” the spokesperson said.

NBNCo said service providers were responsible for mobile services, while the NBN was responsible for fixed line services to the home.

Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Judi Jones said residential consumers and small businesses first need to notify their phone or internet provider of their service drop-outs or reception issues, and try to resolve their complaint with their provider.

“If the issue remains unresolved, consum-

ers can make a complaint with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. We’re here to help,” Ms Jones said.

This was echoed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the NBN who both encouraged customers experiencing slow connection speeds and poor phone service to contact their retail service provider to determine the cause of the problem.

RMIT University electronic and telecommunications associate professor Dr Mark Gregory said it was only through more complaints lodged by customers that “the telos will take action to improve the reliability”.

Casey Hospital expansion just in time as cases soar

By Patrick Hargreaves More people are waiting longer at emergency to see a doctor at Casey Hospital, but the newly completed $135 million is hoped to meet demand – and just in time for the global pandemic.

The latest data from the Federal Government’s ‘MyHospital’ website shows that in 2019 only 51 per cent of people presenting to emergency with urgent medical needs had been seen within 30 minutes, the worst result in 10 years.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas expects the expansion to meet demand.

“We know there are times when waiting in an emergency department can be stressful for patients and their families ... we are delivering record funding to each and every hospital in Victoria for doctors and nurses to care for record numbers of patients and we’ve delivered the massive $135 million expansion of Casey Hospital,” Mr Maas said.

The new 12-bed intensive care unit means Casey Hospital is able to treat critically ill patients who present through the emergency department, rather than sending them to other Monash Health hospitals.

The upgrade means the hospital can service an extra 25,800 patients per year, it had

48,000 admissions in 2018.

The expansion to hospital was expected to be completed by late 2019, however delays to the project meant the ribbon was only cut in March.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin is not pleased with the delay.

“Casey hospital upgrades are years behind due to a project delays and lack of funding by the Andrews Labor government. This means more locals have to wait longer for urgent attention.

“If the government delivered the upgrades on time and on budget, we would see an im-

provement in times, not more patients waiting,” Mr Battin said.

As part of the State’s pandemic preparation an extra $30 million has been provided to Casey Hospital to fund an extra 140 beds, that will help the State’s surge capacity for peak of the pandemic.

At the moment there are no active cases at Casey Hospital, however Monash Health, who manage the hospital, are facing an ongoing crisis with 77 Monash Health hospital staff self-isolating after potential exposure to the virus.

If the crisis continues to worsen, Casey Hospital will be expected to share the load.

By Mitchell Clarke Premier Daniel Andrews has vowed to look into whether suburb specific information relating to positive confirmed Covid-19 cases could be made public.

Currently, daily coronavirus figures from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) only provide data for local government areas (LGAs), rather than specific suburbs.

In social media posts on Covid stories, residents have long been calling for more transparency on the location of cases, because of the sheer size of LGAs in the South East.

The question was put to the Premier during a regional press conference on Friday, to which he said he would put the questions to Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, professor Brett Sutton.

He said providing details on suburbs or towns brought up the challenge of maintaining privacy, especially in regional areas, where there are such small numbers of cases.

“I’m more than happy to take it up with the Chief Health Officer and see if there’s more information we can provide that won’t cut across the privacy of any individual that has a positive test,” Mr Andrews said.

“It’s always a difficult balance to strike ...

What we never want to have is a situation where people might be reticent to come forward and get tested if they thought they were going to be, in effect, named, because that could have a whole range of different consequences.”

Mr Andrews said the daily coronavirus numbers weren’t reported for the purpose of trying to worry people, but rather to try to provide transparency throughout the pandemic.

“If there’s a bit more information we can give you then I’m more than happy to ask Brett to have a think about that,” he said.

“There might be some ways we can maintain privacy but still give a better sense of where it (the virus) is, and therefore where it isn’t.”

Toilet fix for new station Casey Council says it will work with the community to ensure accessible toilet facilities are included at the new Merinda Park train station following the release of new designs.

It comes as the State Government announced a rebuild of the station on the Cranbourne line with works to begin in August as sections of the old platform were removed.

Casey Council chair of administrators Noelene Duff welcomed for the design improvements released by the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) for the new Merinda Park Station but said council officers had heard from members in the community, including advocates for people with disabilities, calling for public toilet amenities at Merinda Park Station.

“We welcome the design improvements to the new Merinda Park Station and the opportunity for the community to see what is being planned. However, council has identified the need for accessible toilet facilities, which are not yet included in the station design,” Ms Duff said.

“Updating the designs to include this necessary convenience would ensure the rail precinct is better equipped now and into the future.”

Merinda Park Station was rated the fifth worst performing station in the state in RACV’s On Track Survey 2017 for issues such a lack of toilets and inadequate seating.

The latest changes to the design include two platforms to accommodate the duplicated tracks, a new pedestrian underpass with lifts, ramps and stairs to access the platforms and covered waiting areas. Landscaping and vegetation enhancements are also planned with council requesting as much tree canopy cover as possible.

The works will be staged to keep the station as operational as possible during construction.

Meanwhile, Casey Council says major rail projects taking shape in Casey including a new design for Hallam Station were set to be a “significant boost” to the community and “ensure that our growing community is able to move around more efficiently”.

“Council and the community contributed feedback to help support the best outcome for the design and use of the new rail precinct which will include a new bus interchange and more carparking,” Ms Duff said.

“We see the two key pieces of infrastructure missing from the modern and efficient rail precinct plan is a new, premium Berwick Station to replace the ageing one and a pedestrian

rail bridge over busy Clyde Road.”

Council will continue to advocate on behalf of the community for quality design, minimal disruptions and support for local businesses and residents.

“Council is keen to continue to work together with all levels of Government on all the Big Build projects to help see the best outcomes realised for the community,” Ms Duff said.

Greater Melbourne and Mitchell Shire residents are once again facing stage three lockdown restrictions after a surge in coronavirus cases.

Although it feels like the same circumstances as in mid-March, this time there is the benefit of experience, a crucial advantage that will be a guide through the next several weeks.

Frankston resident Beverly Allen says she’s been exploring her creative side over the past few months, improving her garden, learning how to play the ukulele from YouTube videos and making mossariums, miniature ecosystems inside glass domes.

“We have to try and rise above the things we can’t do at the moment and I think the secret to doing that is using our creativity,” she says.

Beverly has a lung condition which makes her more vulnerable to the coronavirus and she has mostly been inside, apart from a daily walk with Angelita her 17-year-old silky terrier.

She says there have been many days when she hasn’t spoken to another person and going into a second lockdown, she hopes more people will call instead of text.

“I suppose out of anything, I wish people wouldn’t only text this time and make a phone call instead, because to hear another person’s voice is just wonderful,” she says.

She also recommends the simple joy of letter writing to keep in contact with friends you can’t see in person.

“You can include a bookmark or something small that you’ve made with your letter and it’s a great thrill to get that and then spend some time answering it,” she says.

“My clients are eager to keep up with their fitness this time around because they realised during the first lockdown that not exercising really affected their mental health,” she says.

“The biggest lesson I learned and tried to pass on to my clients during the first lockdown was to just keep going and do what you can, putting one foot in front of the other, taking the dog for a walk, or dancing in your bedroom,” “Whatever ‘moving’ means to you that you can handle at the moment, I strongly encourage people to find it and do it because I promise it will make you feel better,” she says.

Teachers found themselves having to learn new ways to engage their students during the first school term of online remote learning.

Secondary teacher Ruth Myers says there are many things she is refining this time around.

“During the first lockdown we were aware from research emerging out of other countries that students were really only getting through about 60 percent of what they would normally get through in the classroom, but I’m not sure teachers took that on properly to reduce the pressure on themselves,” she says.

“This time I’ll try to keep in mind that the learning outcomes are going to be a little less than what they are for face-to-face, but I think everyone knows that teachers are working as hard as they can and trying to get across as much of the curriculum they can while keeping kids engaged.”

Ruth says her students were good at adapting to the new style of learning, and she enjoyed finding new ways to teach using technology.

“I’ll try to give more mind to my own teacher wellbeing and try to figure out how to not put so much pressure on myself, because that was one of the challenges during the last lockdown,” she says.

“I was so happy and excited to be back in the classroom last term, it was so wonderful, and to me it demonstrated once again how much I am in the right career, despite the remote learning challenges, and that’s been really lovely.”

Laura Slavin is part of the team mobilized by the Brotherhood of St Lawrence that has built a program to support parents in the Franklin, Mernda and Fitzroy areas.

Support workers will assist parents via virtual sessions to feel informed about how to best help their children with home learning and the transition back to classrooms.

“We want to help parents to set up inducive learning environments within their home and it’s about providing parents with someone to talk to and to be able to air some of the frustrations of being at home,” she says.

“It’s about making sure that we get through this time with our mental health intact and our family relationships still strong by the end of this.”

Laura hopes that parents will reach out and engage the service throughout the lockdown and afterwards.

Carjacker is behind bars

By Brendan Rees A drug-addled man who used a fake gun to steal a car as he led police on a wild chase in Cranbourne has been jailed for at least five years.

Cori Harrison, 27, was sentenced to eight years and five months in jail at a Victorian County Court sitting on 10 July after pleading guilty to more than 35 charges including burglary, reckless conduct endangering persons, aggravated carjacking, and drive while disqualified.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Ryan said: “Your crimes both indictable and summary demonstrate a complete disregard for the rules of the civilised community.”

Jude Ryan added: “You continued to drive in an appalling manner and in each aspect of the police pursuit you put members of the public at risk.”

The court heard Harrison had gone on a months-long crime spree between 27 February 2019 and 1 April 2019 - where he stole seven cars and filled up with fuel at service stations, where at times he would drive-off without paying.

He also affixed stolen registration plates to stolen cars, and used stolen credit cards to buy cigarettes, food and petrol, the court heard.

On 1 April, Harrison, who had an extensive criminal history, committed two burglaries and was in a stolen Mitsubishi Triton with mates when he led police on a dramatic pursuit.

The court heard Harrison crashed his Triton into a car before jumping out and pointing an imitation rifle at a man behind the wheel of a Ford utility and threatening to shoot him.

He continued to flee from police in the utility before crashing into two cars on the South Gippsland Highway outside the Settlement Hotel in Cranbourne.

Harrison, who was a disqualified driver at the time, was arrested at the scene and tested

positive for methamphetamine after undertaking a preliminary oral fluid test, the court heard.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the man who was in the Ford utility at time said he thought he was “going to be shot dead”.

“I developed strength and courage, learnt to box and played rugby league ... on the first of April that all changed having a gun in my face made my life flash before me,” his statement recalled to the court, adding he was a fatherof-three and now diagnosed with depression and PTSD. “Nobody, absolutely nobody should have to be faced with having to go through what happened on that horrible day. It’s something I will never forget.”

Following a search of the stolen cars, police found a meat cleaver and stolen property in the Triton and seized the fake rifle in the utility, the court heard.

A victim of a burglary committed by Harrison said items stolen of her late husband were “sentimentally irreplaceable” after her house was “trashed”.

The court was told Harrison, who is of Aboriginal heritage, grew up in an abusive household where drug use was prevalent. He attended 10 different primary schools and started using cannabis at age 11 and by 17 he was using “drugs heavily”.

He dropped out of school at 15 and finished a tiling apprenticeship, however, this was interrupted by time in detention.

According to a psychologist report read out to the court Harrison had “chronic problems with an emerging personality disorder”.

In sentencing Judge Ryan took into consideration Harrison’s guilty plea as “some evidence” of remorse but regarded prospects of rehabilitation as being guarded.

He will be eligible for parole in five years.

Teacher child porn charges A former teacher who worked at several South East schools has been charged with producing child abuse material.

Timothy Patrick Cordova, 25, of Rowville, was arrested six days after his home was raided and electronic devices seized by Victoria Police detectives on 26 June.

Cordova appeared at a bail hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 16 July.

He was charged with offences such as using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, to produce child abuse ma-

terial and to cause the transmission of child abuse material to himself.

He was also charged with possessing child abuse material.

Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) detectives allege that victims have been identified from three schools in the South East.

Cordova was bailed on conditions to appear at a committal mention hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 2 October.

Ninja Steve gives his all

By Brendan Rees Stay-at-home dad Steve Taylor-Madin says he will give his all in his quest to become Australian’s next ninja warrior.

Nicknamed “Monkey Steve” because his daughter says he’s “always climbing”, the 37-year-old of Narre Warren will be a contestant on Channel Nine’s reality smash hit, Australian Ninja Warrior when season four returns on 26 July.

And the stakes have been raised with the addition of the daunting Power Tower.

Mr Taylor-Madin says he’s normally “quiet, shy, and reserved” and has never taken on a challenge of “this scale” as he joins 140 ninjas to claim the $100,000 prize.

“Having this physical exercise along with the mental challenge of the obstacle, that’s been huge for me.”

But he admits: “I had every bit of confidence in myself in my ability.”

At 69 kilograms and 171cm tall, the former cycling retail manager hopes his agility and “super high” jumping ability will get him across the line.

His training regime has included gym exercises, rock climbing, cycling, running with his dog, monkey bar climbing, and “bucket loads of pull-ups”.

“Instead of sitting on the sidelines I would be out there on the monkey bars,” he says of the times he took his nine-year-old daughter Evelyn to a park.

“That was essentially good training. It’s a lot more fun, you don’t feel like you’re working out as such.”

Steve hits the obstacle course on the Australian Ninja Warrior TV reality show.

He adds his daughter was actually the reason that he applied for the show and describes himself as an “overgrown child” who loves to have his nails painted by his daughter.

Mr Taylor-Madin says he still been able to remain fit and active despite breaking his back at the age of 21 while BMX riding in Cranbourne, which took 10 years to properly recover.

He’s also a keen photographer and says his nerves will be “right up there” as he faces the camera and lights for the first time.

“I’m always behind a camera but very, very rarely am I in front of the camera.”

Last farewell Kelly Burns, the founder and director of Redwood Funerals at Narre Warren, says everyone deserves a personalised funeral that reflects their personality, their passions and how they lived their life.

Mixing work and family I have had the privilege of working with many family businesses over the past few years and particularly enjoy this since family members naturally have much more skin in the game but are also typically very passionate about getting the business to succeed.

However, on occasions the business roles and responsibilities can get blurred by the family relationships, for example if all family members share equally (or proportionately) in the proceeds of the business success, how do you determine who makes what decisions and who reports to whom? A staff member will necessarily tend to view a family member as more senior, so the potential exists for confused reporting lines and misaligned priorities. I have seen this cause frustration and confusion and unfortunately in some cases even broken family relationships, so how do you reconcile the relationships conundrum?

There are a couple of things that I have found to work well.

First off, if there are multiple family members with a vested financial interest in the business, it is a good idea to set up a separate Board (often as a Trust) which enables proceeds from the business to be distributed in a fair and equal manner according to business performance and each individual’s stake in the business. If the Board meets on a regular basis, it also gives all members an opportunity to get a firsthand view of how the business is performing without interfering in the daily operations. This is an important point since the Board’s role is to ensure proper corporate governance, look after stakeholder interests and select the CEO, it is not to run the business from an operational perspective. Creating a separate Board then enables family members to have an equal say on business governance without hampering the operational execution of the business.

Business operation belongs with the CEO and the management team and each family member’s role within the business should be a function of their skillset and expertise (as it

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH would be for anyone filling a position in the company) not simply because they are a Board member. It is also possible that family members may fulfill several roles within the business.

This is where an organisation chart is particularly helpful. It may be tempting to think of the humble Org Chart as something only big companies need or simply showing who reports to whom, but in practice it fulfills many critical functions. Businesses often go astray when priorities within the business are not aligned, so creating and publicizing an Org Chart is essential for clearly identifying who is responsible for setting whose priorities as opposed to just showing who is who’s boss. Further it should clearly define who is responsible for which particular business function thereby reducing the possibility of duplication of effort or things falling through the cracks. It is a great way to describe career progression within the business, especially for more junior staff and finally forms an essential basis for succession planning, i.e. who would do what should a particular person decide to leave the organisation. Finally, and possibly most importantly, a well-defined Org Chart enables a business to scale and hence grow. For this reason, I tend to term it an “organisational architecture” since everyone knows that it is easier to extend and build on something that has been well architected versus one that has not.

May not solve all the issues, but in our experience this is a pretty good place to start.

Grants for early years The State Government is helping Narre Warren South kinders upgrade their facilities to create more kindergarten places ahead of the roll-out of funded universal Three-Year-Old Kindergarten.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas welcomed applications under the Building Blocks program, with grants available for projects that create additional kindergarten places for three and four-year-olds by building new or expanding existing infrastructure.

Funding for the Capacity Building stream closes soon on 31 July.

The program is part of a $1.18 billion package for education infrastructure projects, which will build projects across Victoria, create jobs and kickstart Victoria’s economy.

“The Building Blocks program is a fantastic opportunity for our early childhood services in Narre Warren South to set themselves up for the future,” Mr Maas said.

“This funding should help our kinders provide more care and education as they expand their capacity to support more local families.”

City of Casey and not-for-profit organisations delivering funded kindergarten programs are encouraged to apply for a grant as part of the program.

Councils and non-profit organisations can apply for up to $1.5 million for a New Early Learning Facility, up to $600,000 for an upgrade or expansion, up to $1.5 million for a modular kindergarten facility, or up to $2 million for a new Integrated Children’s Centre.

Launched in March, Building Blocks streamlines all pre-exisiting kindergarten infrastructure grants into one overarching program and provides increased state funding contributions for early childhood projects.

This new funding will help early childhood providers undertake projects to improve their services, and assist them in increasing the capacity of services to help deliver extra places as we roll out our ThreeYear-Old Kinder reforms.

Support during lockdown

By Denis Green - convenor, South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group Prostate Cancer and support groups for other types of cancer normally meet face-to-face on a regular basis.

They provide information, friendship and support to people suffering from the effects of cancer and the treatments that they may be going through.

Up until February this year, the South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group was meeting every month at the Dandenong RSL. It is important not only for the men themselves, but also for their carers and partners to have access to support mechanisms when they need them.

As we all know in Victoria, our first round of Covid-19 Lockdown brought an immediate end to community meetings of any kind, including cancer support groups.

In fact, staying at home was even more important for people with cancer than for the general population, because some of us are at considerably higher risk of contracting coronavirus.

This is due to the fact that many people undergoing cancer treatments have a compromised immune system as a side-effect (for example chemotherapy or radiation therapy).

Added to that, even without treatment sideeffects, many men in prostate cancer support groups are aged 70 or higher, so are already at higher risk of coronavirus.

And then, just as we were beginning to see a possibility for recommencing face-to-face meetings, we in Melbourne are back in Lockdown - and for a longer period!

So, what are we doing to continue to provide support to our members during this time?

In some ways it’s even more important than ever, as being forced to stay at home can aggravate some of the emotional and mental

stresses on people living with cancer.

First, our group leaders make phone contact with our members on a regular basis to provide encouragement and see if there are any specific needs that we may be able to help with.

We find that our members are generally looking after themselves and their health needs well, but always appreciate hearing a friendly voice on the phone.

Second, coronavirus lockdowns and forced work-from-home situations has seen a massive rise in the use of online meeting technologies - such as Zoom.

South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group - along with many other prostate and different cancer support groups - quickly seized on this as a way to maintain contact and provide ongoing information and resources to members.

So far, we have held Zoom meetings each month from April to July and we will continue doing so until it is safe to recommence face-toface meetings.

As with our normal meetings, we’ve been fortunate to get willing support from expert speakers who do their presentations in the Zoom meeting, showing slides or videos on the screen just as they would if presenting in a normal meeting and with a question-andanswer session also.

Our online speakers have included a prostate cancer researcher from Monash University and a pathologist from Peter McCallum Cancer Centre.

In July, to acknowledge the need for support in managing the extra stress and anxiety during lockdown, our speaker from Bolton Clarke was an expert in managing stress through mindfulness.

Some prostate cancer support groups have not been able to hold online meetings and so our group has invited their members to join our Zoom meetings if they wish - a really easy thing to do when it’s online, as opposed to having to go to a physical meeting location.

So we’ve had people joining from other parts of Melbourne and as far away as Bathurst, NSW. The feedback from these meetings has been very positive, which makes it all worthwhile.

With 2020 being a difficult year, the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) is warning the public about the risks of employing an unregistered agent who may seek to convince potential clients that, due to the government stimulus measures, they can obtain unrealistically large tax refunds.

Chair of the TPB, Ian Klug said, ‘If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”. “ While an unregistered agent may promise large refunds, the taxpayers may leave themselves open to potentially thousands of dollars in tax bills and penalties.

“We are urging consumers to check the free online register of tax practitioners at tpb.gov.au/ onlineregister and guard against putting their financial and personal information at risk.”

It follows a recent case where an individual whose registration was terminated by the TPB for fraud and dishonesty, continued to operate by lodging 19 returns. The TPB put a stop to this conduct and noted that if the affected taxpayers had checked the TPB Register they would have found that the individual was not registered. Undertaking such a check may have saved these taxpayers time and money.

“We know that consumers place a large degree of trust in their practitioner but where the practitioner betrays that trust by putting their client’s interests and integrity of the tax system at risk, we will not hesitate to take action against them.”

The TPB has issued a number of tips for tax time 2020.

Buster blitzes the journey

By Mick Floyd Hooked On Scotch showed why he is regarded by some as ‘the fastest greyhound on the planet’, with a breathtaking victory in his 595-metre debut at Sandown last Thursday night.

In one of the most eagerly-anticipated middle distance debuts in over a decade of racing over the trip, the 515-metre track record holder began flawlessly to take the early lead and open a three-length gap to Weblec Ace. That margin was cut to less than a length down the back straight however ‘Buster’ kicked clear in the run to the line, winning by two-and-a-quarter lengths in 33.806. “(I’m) really happy to see him begin like that,” said trainer, the Pearcedale-based Jason Thompson.

“That was one of the reasons we put him in over the distance. He’s been running against some of the (best) sprinters in the country and finding a bit of trouble at the start so hopefully he can take a bit of confidence from that.”

His winning time was the ninth-fastest ever over the distance, and the second-fastest run a by a greyhound on debut over the trip - beaten only by Dyna Double One’s 33.63 track record gallop.

Hooked On Scotch - or ‘Buster’ as he’s known at Thompson’s home at Awesome Lodge - was simply brilliant in his first 595-metre start.

Not only was it the second fastest debut run by a greyhound over the trip, it was the ninth fastest time ever over 595 metres; the fastest 595-metre gallop so far in 2020 (eclipsing Rockstar Prince’s 33.818); the fastest Thompson-trained winner over 595 metres (eclipsing Extreme Magic’s 33.835); and the third-best combined 515-metre and 595-metre time (62.745) behind Dyna Double One (62.680)

Hooked On Scotch just continues to impress for trainer Jason Thompson. and Dyna Patty (62.731).

But, as impressive as the win on Thursday was, his campaign over the middle distance is likely to be short lived with the Victorian National Sprint Series (over 515 metres) in early August his next target.

Big V abandoned for 2020

By Russell Bennett Due to the Covid-19 restrictions currently in place for metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire - this season’s Big V basketball competitions have officially been abandoned.

Basketball Victoria issued a series of key announcements earlier this month, with updates on a number of its major competitions.

The 2019/20 VJBL Championship season has been cancelled, along with the eagerly awaited Big V season - set to feature local associations including the Casey Cavaliers and Pakenham Warriors.

“With the re-introduction of Stage 3 restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne, we unfortunately have no alternative but to cancel the 2020 Big V season,” Basketball

Victoria announced on its website.

The Australian Junior Championships have also been abandoned.

“Basketball Australia, in consultation with the state and territory associations, has determined the Australian Under-18 Championships, Under-16 Championships, and Kevin Coombs Cup will not proceed for 2020,” Basketball Victoria stated on its website.

“While significant efforts have been made to reschedule these events, the fluid and unpredictable nature of the current situation surrounding Covid-19 has made it impossible for Basketball Australia to make a firm commitment to dates.

The youngster - drafted with pick 15 in last year’s National Draft, among the first Stingrays selected - made an instant impact on the big stage at Metricon Stadium when he climbed high to take a contested mark in the pocket in the first quarter, before bending a 40-metre checkside straight through the middle of the big sticks.

It was as impressive as a first disposal at the highest level could possibly be.

In a debut where he continually chased the Essendon defenders, provided a presence whenever he was near it, and took his chances when they presented themselves in front of goal (slotting two majors for the evening), one thing stood out more than anything - it was impossible to wipe the smile off the face of a young player just honoured to be out there.

An even prouder moment for Weightman was the fact that experienced midfielder Mitch Wallis - a mentoring figure and a player the youngster lived with when he first came to the club - handed him his playing jumper when the debut was announced last Wednesday.

The rising star told the Star News that after doing all the hard work to get out there, it was an incredibly satisfying experience on the night.

“I didn’t get in the team at the start of the season, and I was probably a bit frustrated, but I just needed to work on a few things, but once I was able to put my best foot forward I got my opportunity,” he said.

“I found the game at first so quick, and was taken by that a bit, but I did expect it to be honest.

“And as time went on and the game went on, I felt like I found my feet and I could really belong - the game was so fun to be a part of, the boys really got around me and made me feel like I belong at the level.

“That went a long way to me having an okay game, but the team having success on the night.

“I had an absolute blast.”

Weightman said coach Luke Beveridge’s advice throughout the week was a major catalyst for his ability to not overthink the game and approach it with an open mind.

“Bev just wanted me to relax, enjoy the experience and play my natural game on instinct, really,” he said.

“The boys getting around me was also really comforting, and I felt like I just needed to do what I do, and see what went right and what went wrong.

“He had a really open approach with me, and it really helped on the night.”

But was what going through Weightman’s head when he took a soaring mark deep in the pocket and prepared for his first kick at AFL level?

“It was quite interesting - I spoke to some of the boys after the game, and I honestly wasn’t really thinking a lot, so it probably helped having a clear head,” he said.

“I took the mark, and having that first touch is a relief in itself, so I was already on a positive note - I looked inboard and felt there was nothing that was overwhelmingly a better option.

“The best thing was I didn’t think about the

“I backed myself, and I’ve always done that growing up, so I did that and fortunately enough it worked - there’s probably other players that would prefer to pass that one off, but for me, luckily I backed myself in and it went my way on the night.”

Whether it be for the Dandenong Stingrays in the NAB League, captaining Haileybury in the school competition, or with his local club Beaconsfield, the small forward has always had this same beaming smile across his face, and an infectious attitude that has rubbed off on his teammates. He also has football traits that basically can’t be taught.

In an incredible football journey that actually saw Weightman win his first premiership for his local club Beaconsfield in the Under 19s less than two years ago, where he won best afield on a rain-soaked day, to dominating for Haileybury as its captain in a three-peat in 2019 and the Dandenong Stingrays where he lit up Shepley Oval, the youngster said he’s been blessed to be involved with some incredible football programs.

“I’ve been quite lucky with the journey I’ve been able to take with school footy, the Stingrays and the local area footy,” he said.

“I didn’t even realise its been under two years (since winning the best afield medal with Beaconsfield) - it was a horrible day with the weather and they had a bloke all over me that day so it presented its own challenges.

“It was my first premiership technically, they don’t do the same set-up with the school ones, so that was a special moment.

“It was a different lead-up for me having not being able to play a lot of footy with those boys with the other commitments, but fortunately enough I was able to have a game that helped get our team over the line.

“Likewise with my AFL debut, its one i’ll remember for a long time.”

On a proud night for the Stingrays, Essendon also debuted fellow small forward Ned Cahill, a close mate of Weightman’s, and while the Bomber forwards found it tough going, the energetic youngster held his own and looks a player for the future.

Weightman celebrates ‘that’ remarkable goal. but provided great forward pressure and very nearly got on the end of a goal in the dying seconds of the contest.

Weightman said it was a particular honour to be debuting together with his great mate, despite being on opposing sides.

“We’ve become really close over the last few years, and to share the same special moment with him was even more than the dream,” he said.

“That was amazing, and even just having the moment after the game with him - you’ve got so much adrenaline going through you and its quite a bizarre feeling to be honest, and to share that feeling with him was pretty special.

“I have a little journal I write in, and it’s something I put in there as one of the highlights of the night.”

With Weightman entrenched in hub life in what has certainly been a different debut season at AFL level, the youngster spoke of how his mindset and approach are helping him forge forward.

“It’s a completely different contrast to what we were expecting coming into the year, but for me, its about the mindset you approach it with,” he said.

“As much as there is glooming negativity about what’s happening, and there is some scary stuff going on, there are overwhelmingly positive things poking its head out and you can pay a lot of attention to that.

“We’re definitely some of the fortunate ones at the moment, and a lot of people are doing it tough, so its always important to remember that.”

Weightman’s Doggies will come up against the red-hot Gold Coast Suns tonight (Thursday) at Metricon Stadium, in a clash the youngster expects to be hotly contested.

“They’re playing some great footy, for sure, and I think it’s their first blockbuster game,” he said.

“There’s absolutely no doubt they’ll come to play, and we expect our mob to do the same thing, so it sets the scene for a really good contest.”

Le Brocq’s breakthrough

By Daniel Herrero First-time Virgin Australia Supercars Championship race winner Jack Le Brocq has hailed Tickford Racing for rebuilding his confidence, after two difficult years at Tekno Autosports.

Le Brocq took victory in Race 12 of the season at the Truck Assist Sydney SuperSprint, his fourth event back with the team with which he also finished runner-up in the 2016 Dunlop Super2 Series.

The outcome was a far cry from particularly the latter of his seasons with Tekno, when he finished better than 20th only seven times in 30 races and was even the subject of speculation that he would be dumped early in the campaign.

“It’s unreal, it’s an awesome feeling, I’m over the moon for everyone in the team for giving me this opportunity,” said the Supercheap Auto Mustang driver.

“After the year we had last year, your confidence always takes a knock.

“We were on Struggle Street last year but these guys have given me the opportunity to show what we can do in a race car, and given us an awesome set of wheels to do that with. “(I’m) just learning a lot from them, they’re very good at building my confidence up and they’ve done an awesome job of that over the past six months already to start the year.

“We’re only three (complete) rounds in so I’ve got a lot to learn with how to drive this car correctly but I’m loving every moment and they’re doing a ripper job of helping me get up to speed.”

The mixed tyre format ensured that there would be variability in results across the three races at Sydney Motorsport Park, but Le Brocq’s crew had actually been eyeing off a more balanced performance across the Sunday encounters.

“At the start of the weekend, we were always going to write the Saturday off with hard tyres,” he explained.

“That was always our plan, to sort of give us the opportunity of a better Sunday,” he explained.

“The plan wasn’t actually to put all the eggs in one basket for one race day today but we

Champion pair to lead the Dandy District academy

By Nick Creely Two of the region’s most highly-regarded cricketing figures, Craig Slocombe and Matthew Chasemore are set to head a DDCA junior cricket academy this season.

The pair have been appointed as the Junior Academy coaches, with the DDCA hoping to start its program in September despite the recent Covid-19 outbreaks in Melbourne.

Slocombe - a highly-regarded coach who has led the Under 21 VMCU group to great success - has recently joined Premier Cricket outfit Dandenong as a senior assistant coach after his role as the Pattinson Academy coach last season, and after a legendary career for Springvale South in the DDCA, will continue to bring the next generation of youngsters through the south-east after recently retiring from Turf 1 cricket.

Chasemore - aside from his feats as a champion Premier Cricket, Victorian Second XI player and reigning Turf 1 premiership captain with Berwick - also has an illustrious history from a coaching perspective, with a stint at Frankston Peninsula, and has kickstarted the Peninsula Cricket Academy with ex-state cricketer Jayde Herrick.

Chasemore has long been regarded as one of the most successful development coaches in Victoria after a long career where he has been considered as one of the most unlucky cricketers not to play First Class cricket.

The age group of the academy will be under 12s, 14s, 16s, 18s and girls, which aligns with the recent move from the DDCA to even age groups for the upcoming season.

young cricketers - who have been invited based on last year’s performances and representative experience - set to be benefit from the expertise of the champion pair, Richards said that the DDCA academy was an important part of maintaining the standard of cricket in the region, and hopes it can draw more juniors to the game.

“To be able to continue to develop the local talent over time we believe will draw attention to local players being recruited,” he said.

“We have felt that the standard of cricket in the region had been declining and especially at representative level.
