While the proposed Emu Swamp Dam near Stanthorpe would primarily benefit Granite Belt producers who contribute to its cost and buy water allocations, the project has a whole of region relevance (see this week’s cover story, pages 4&5).

At issue for the Southern Downs Regional Council is its involvement and there are a lot of issues to be thrashed out in terms of the potential for the council to have a stake in Emu Swamp Dam from a town water perspective for Stanthorpe.

There are potential benefits, and also potential costs. In general though - and in theory - it can be said that any measure which improves town water security for Stanthorpe is in Warwick’s interests, given water from Connolly Dam is currently being trucked to Stanthorpe at significant cost to taxpayers and the Queensland Government.

The bigger picture here is overall water security both from an urban and an agricultural perspective. It’s complex and the Free Times will be following ongoing developments in relation to Emu Swamp Dam closely.

We are getting close to crunch time from a government and a private irrigator perspective, so more to come on this topic.

WIND FARM ‘NOT YET APPROVED’ A massive wind farm proposed to cover 40,000 hectares to the west of the Southern Downs Regional Council boundary but taking in a section of the SDRC area is yet to be approved by the State Government.

The ‘MacIntyre Wind Farm’ proposal by renewable energy company Acciona is not subject to council approval and will instead be assessed by the Queensland Government’s State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA), an arm of the Queensland Department of State Development and Queensland Treasury.

Reports this week in other local media suggested the project has been approved but a spokeswoman for Acciona this week told the Free Times the wind farm application is still with SARA. Acciona said in early 2020 a series of public consultation meetings would be held with affected communities but attributed a cessation of consultation to COVID-19.

The spokeswoman this week said more engagement with residents of both the Southern Downs Regional Council and the

Goondiwindi Regional Council is planned, but was not able to provide specific details.

Most of the project’s 120 turbines - with a “maximum wing-tip height� of 285 metres would be located on land leased by Acciona in the Goondiwindi region but a section of the wind farm will come over the border into the SDRC region in the Goldfields/Pike Creek district.

The Queensland Government’s publiclyowned CleanCo announced in late March it will partner with Acciona on the site.

Now-former Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad announced on March 26 this year that a CleanCo component involving 18 wind turbines would form part of the Acciona project.

Those turbines will the located on the Goondiwindi side of the council boundary. “On behalf of Queenslanders, CleanCo will also buy another 400 megawatts of new renewable energy from Acciona,� Ms Trad said at the time. “CleanCo’s involvement in the MacIntyre Precinct has nearly doubled the

size and capacity of the wind farm, with Queenslanders set to benefit from the addition of more than one gigawatt of new renewable energy to our electricity network — the equivalent to powering almost 700,000 homes.â€?

Minister for Energy Dr Anthony Lynham has said the project would mean “jobs and business opportunities across the Southern Downs and Darling Downs�. “As one of the largest onshore wind farms in the southern hemisphere, the MacIntyre Precinct will have far reaching and long lasting social and economic benefits locally, and for the whole state,� Dr Lynham said in March. “The local spend on the Downs is forecast to be more than $500 million during construction. “That’s jobs and business flowing into the south west from later this year when early works start.�

Dr Lynham said the 1026 MW wind farm project was expected to be progressively connected to the statewide energy grid

from 2022, with 64 km of new powerlines connecting the wind farm to Queensland’s electricity network at Millmerran. “State-owned Powerlink has already commenced working on the connection of the project to the grid, which on its own will support up to 240 jobs,� Dr Lynham said.

Acciona Australia Energy Managing Director Brett Wickham said Acciona was “excited to be working with CleanCo to deliver one of the largest onshore wind farms in the southern hemisphere�. “In addition to generating up to 400 jobs over its lifetime, a Community Enhancement Program will be established to deliver added value to the local community,� Mr Wickham said. “The project is scheduled to begin construction in mid-2021, with a gradual start-up in phases to ensure connection to the grid with full technical guarantees for the state’s electricity system. “The entire MacIntyre complex will be operational in 2024.� �

eputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has made it clear Canberra sees the proposed Emu Swamp Dam near Stanthorpe as part of the Federal Government’s ‘National Water Grid’ raft of projects during a visit to the Granite Belt this week.

With tenders for the construction of Emu Swamp Dam - estimated at $84 million due to be called in the coming weeks the Deputy PM’s visit has further highlighted the ‘politics of water’ both in our own region and across the country.

The Federal Government has committed $47 million to Emu Swamp Dam, the Queensland Government $13 million and a group of 51 primary producers on the Granite Belt $23.4 million of their own money to the project.

The Southern Downs Regional Council is currently debating their own involvement in the dam, with the option of becoming a ‘formal’ project partner which could include purchasing an allocation to be set aside for emergency town water for Stanthorpe.

But the commercial entity behind Emu Swamp Dam - Granite Belt Water Pty Ltd, made up of local community representatives and leading agricultural figures - says the project will proceed with or without the council’s formal and financial involvement.

aboard an excavator at the site of one of the ‘header’ tanks for the dam on property owned by Sweets Strawberry Runners, with the Sweet family among the producers set to stump up their own financial contribution.

But political photo opportunities aside those producers in the next few months will be required to make their first major - and non-refundable - monetary commitments to Emu Swamp Dam. For its part, the Queensland Government has already come good with $6 million

- of its $13 million total commitment for Granite Belt Water to get the project moving, and the Federal Government is expected to announce a matching forward funding committed within weeks.

It is understood Emu Swamp Dam still requires a final environmental approval under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act, with Deputy Prime Minister McCormack this week saying such an approval is “close” to completion but without announcing a specific timeframe.

Both he and Mr Littleproud this week called on State Governments across the country to work with Canberra on a national suite of 22 water projects to which the ‘feds’ have so far committed $1.5 billion.

‘National Water Grid’ projects in Canberra’s sights also include a proposed dam on the Mole River in northern New South Wales, currently the subject of a $12 million business case.

Politicians at all levels have suggested in recent years both Emu Swamp Dam and a dam on the Mole River could potentially form part of an interstate and interconnected water grid but such a concept seems years in the making, with water security for regions such as ours the current focus.

Mr McCormack and Mr Littleproud this week declared Emu Swamp Dam to be “on track”, saying “greater water security would give growers the confidence and certainty they need to expand new irrigated agriculture in the region, supporting hundreds of local jobs”. freetimes.com.au

“When complete, Emu Swamp Dam is expected to increase water availability in the region by up to 40 per cent, providing 3,900 megalitres of high-reliability water for irrigators,” Mr McCormack said.

“Negotiations on the Emu Swamp Dam funding agreement are close to being finalised.

“This agreement will see the Australian Government match the Queensland Government in bringing forward $6 million for pre-construction work.

“Not only will this important project help to drought-proof this prosperous farming region, putting shovels in the ground and boots in the mud will generate hundreds of jobs right at a time when the community needs it most.

“Emu Swamp Dam is one of many projects the Federal Government is investing in to develop the National Water Grid, which will be a series of regionspecific water storage and distribution solutions securing water supplies now and into the future.”

Mr Littleproud said Emu Swamp Dam “means 700 new full-time jobs including 135 during construction and injecting $67.8 million into the local economy”.

“Local farmers have backed themselves and will put a $24 million investment into this project to give Granite Belt producers the water security they need.

“Once Granite Belt Water Ltd reaches an agreement with the Queensland Government on the conditions of the project, construction will begin.

“The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government has committed $42 million for the Emu Swamp Dam under the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund and another $5 million for supporting road infrastructure under the Roads of Strategic Importance program.”

The State Government has also issued its own update on Emu Swamp Dam, with Queensland Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Dr Anthony Lynham saying late last week that “final planning” is “accelerating”.

Both Dr Lynham and Granite Belt Water issued statements late last week announcing the appointment of national engineering consultancy firm Premise “to oversee the final planning stages of Emu Swamp Dam”.

Dr Lynham said the state government’s “advanced release of $6 million has allowed the appointment of Premise to oversee final permits and construction tenders of the project”.

Granite Belt Water CEO Lloyd Taylor said the appointment of Premise “is a major step needed to move through the

“A vast amount of work has been done since GBIP planning began in 2007, and we’re working as quickly and as diligently as possible to allow our Board and governments to make a final decision on this desperately-needed water project,” Mr Taylor said.

“The work to be completed by Premise puts serious horsepower behind the final steps needed to draw all this information together to obtain necessary government permits and approvals, and to prepare tenders for construction of the dam and pipeline.

“A decision to begin construction is expected in early 2021, and this will be based in large part on the final permits and detailed budgets that will result from this engineering work in coming months.”

Premise Director Patrick Brady said the firm’s Toowoomba regional office will deliver the project and draw on technical expertise from across the company.

“Premise has advanced skills in pipeline and irrigation works and a deep understanding of the challenges associated with delivering infrastructure into regional areas,” Mr Brady said.

to support local people and businesses throughout this process and to build the skills, capacity and prosperity of the region for the long-term.”

Lloyd Taylor said “pre-construction activities” include “confirming contracts to purchase water with irrigators, commencing negotiations with landholders, detailed planning and tendering to cost the project and obtaining necessary construction approvals”.

Mr Taylor said tenders to “construct the dam and provide the pipeline infrastructure will be released in coming months”, having earlier said Granite Belt Water was hopeful of tenders being called by the end of July or in early August.

“A new website has been launched at www.granitebeltirrigationproject.com.au and a shopfront at 3/35 Maryland Street, Stanthorpe, has opened to allow increased engagement with the community,” Mr Taylor said this week.

PIPELINE SILENCE ...

While both Federal and State pollies talked up Emu Swamp Dam this week the Queensland Government remained silent about a proposed water pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick.

The project was announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk during a visit to Warwick in January of this year but she has since released no details of costings and the construction timeframe.

It is understood a feasibility study into the pipeline by South East Queensland water operator Seqwater has been completed but is yet to be publicly released.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi confirmed earlier this month the Southern Downs Regional Council has been “in talks” with the Queensland Government over the pipeline - it was the subject of a presentation by state officials to councillors in late May but even the Mayor says he is yet to see the feasibility study.

Cr Pennisi has also expressed heavilyqualified support for a ToowoombaWarwick pipeline - which is also seen as a potential source of future emergency water for Stanthorpe - saying he has concerns over the potential long-term cost to ratepayers if the state passed on a share of the cost to the council.

The Toowoomba-Warwick pipeline which would allow our region to access water from Brisbane’s Wivenhoe Dam has been conservatively estimated at $90 million, based on the ‘per-kilometre’ cost of the existing Wivenhoe-Toowoomba pipeline completed in 2010 at a total cost of $187 million.

Some $60 million of that cost was in the form of a State Government loan to Toowoomba Regional Council which will continue to be paid off by Toowoomba ratepayers over the next decade. ● Continued next page

meeting on Tuesday 30 June carried a resolution to give the council’s ‘in principle’ support to Emu Swamp Dam but dependent on the outcome of further investigations of what it would mean for the council, including costs to ratepayers. No timeframe was set on a final decision on the council’s involvement - but with the calling of tenders for Emu Swamp Dam’s construction imminent they may not have long to decide, possibly several months at most.

The council is also asking the State Government for clarification of the rules around transferring water allocations between dams.

The council also intends to ask the State Government if it would consider funding the council’s purchase of a town water allocation from Emu Swamp Dam. While the resolution on Tuesday 30 June was passed by a majority of councillors, Crs Cameron Gow, Jo McNally, Sheryl Windle and Marco Gliori voted “no”, declaring they have reservations about potential impacts on Stanthorpe’s town water security long-term and could not commit even in-principle support without further assurances.

Granite Belt producers met with Mr Littleproud and Mr McCormack on the ground this week. interest in water issues due to having been a previous director of Granite Belt Water.

The ‘perceived conflict of interest’ is the subject of a current investigation relating to a complaint lodged by an unidentified member of the public identities of such complainants are not disclosed publicly by the council or to councillors themselves.

The Tuesday 30 June vote was carried after Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley -who was in the chair at the time due to the mayor’s absence used his casting vote, with Cr Bartley and Crs Stephen Tancred, Andrew Gale and Cynthia McDonald voting “yes” and Crs Cameron Gow, Jo McNally, Sheryl Windle and Marco Gliori voting “no” to in-principle support for Emu Swamp Dam. Due to his alleged conflict Mayor Pennisi cannot participate in current discussions on water issues during council meetings until the investigation is completed. ●

For its part the Southern Downs Regional Council has expressed ‘in principle’ support for Emu Swamp Dam but is seeking more information on the project, including its overall financial viability but also what it would mean for Stanthorpe’s future town water security.

At present the Queensland Government is funding water carting for Stanthorpe from Warwick’s Connolly Dam at a cost of $800,000 a month.

Premier Palaszczuk has committed to continuing that funding until at least January next year but has also said she will “not allow” Stanthorpe to run out of town water, meaning that hefty cost could continue indefinitely - until sufficient rain in the Stanthorpe area sees the town’s existing water supply in Storm King Dam topped up.

As of last week Storm King Dam had just 362ML in storage - at 17.5% of capacity representing only three months’ worth of supply if it was being used. The council has said the existing water is required to support aquatic life and as stand-by water for bushfires response if needed, and is not viable as a town water supply currently.

Storm King Dam - which is solely a town water supply for Stanthorpe - has a ‘useable volume’ at full capacity of 1980ML, compared to Emu Swamp Dam’s projected 11,727ML. Emu Swamp Dam is primarily

intended as an irrigation supply for agriculture but has the potential to store a volume for emergency council water supply for Stanthorpe - the question is how such a supply would be factored in.

The council could purchase a share of water in the dam from Granite Belt Water Pty Ltd in the same way as the primary producers in the area who intend to help fund Emu Swamp Dam. At a forecast cost of $6000 per megalitre up-front such an allocation would be a significant cost to ratepayers - from both Stanthorpe and Warwick and councillors have so far expressed some reservations over such a cost.

Another option for the council would be transfer or sell a 450ML share of its 2100ML total state allocation for Storm King Dam to Emu Swamp Dam - the total allocation for Storm King Dam is nominal under state water allocations and represents the total potential water volume in the Storm King Dam catchment. To capture that full allocation the council would need to either raise Storm King Dam or build another dam downstream of it.

To complicate matters, the State Government has the final say over water allocations and would need to sign off on any allocation transfer between Storm King Dam and Emu Swamp Dam. Councillors at a special council

HAVE YOUR SAY ON RED TAPE The Palaszczuk Government’s ongoing rollout of its economic recovery plan, Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs, will be boosted by more planning red tape reduction measures.

Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the COVID planning red tape reduction strategy will help businesses trade more quickly and will propel job-creation.

“The changes we’re proposing in response to the ongoing COVID pandemic are designed to ease the economic burden for businesses across our state,” Mr Dick said.

“The global coronavirus pandemic has impacted economies around the world and Queensland is no different.

“Because we’re managing the health response we’ve started delivering Queensland’s plan for economic recovery, and part of that is supporting local businesses and local jobs.

“These red tape reduction measures are about protecting and creating jobs during this recovery period, and making sure communities in every corner of Queensland have the critical supplies they need in times of crisis.

“Globally we’re seeing the worst business conditions since the Great Depression. Our government’s job is to reduce the impact of these conditions on Queensland businesses, and that’s driven by our plan for economic recovery,” he said.

“The planning law changes we’ve made

over the past four months have led the nation, and as we continue delivering our Unite and Recover COVID economic plan we’ll keep looking for ways to make it easier for Queensland businesses to employ and thrive.”

Maintaining care for patients with chronic disease has presented a new challenge to health care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic - including Warwick’s Peppertree Medical.

Some patients have stated they prefer to remain in self-quarantine than attend medical appointments. Patients with a chronic illness who do not maintain regular key wellness checks could see their condition deteriorate, possibly leading to an acute care crisis which could have been avoided.

‘THE WRONG MARSHALL’...

Free Times history contributor DEB WHEELER says four years ago she and her husband “had the great pleasure of hosting Megan and Alun Stevens at our Bed & Breakfast”.

“Being a keen history buff myself I was intrigued to learn about Megan’s search to find out the true story of her forefather Charles Marshall,” Deb said.

“Most people in the district know of Mt Marshall and Glengallan Homestead but how many know the background of the Marshall family and the influence they held in the area many years ago?

“Megan has kindly submitted the following article and I encourage anyone wanting to learn more to check out the link at the end of the story.”

BY MEGAN STEVENS Glengallan and Charles Henry Marshall are in my blood. I grew up knowing of them, even though I didn’t know much about them. However, when my husband, Alun, was transferred to Brisbane from Melbourne in the late 1980s I was determined to learn more. My mother also wanted to know about her great-grandfather when she and my father came to visit from South Africa. They had permission from Roy and Helen Smith to visit Glengallan. So, in 1988, armed with a print of the 1858 watercolour of Glengallan by my great-great-grandmother, Charlotte, we visited the property, trying to work out where everything was in relation to the

Fortunately for me I never found the trove of documents on Glengallan in the John Oxley Library in Brisbane when we lived there, as there was no way I would have been able to do justice to the documents without a digital camera or a laptop computer. Besides I had two small children who took up my time.

Fast forward twenty years, time spent completing an MA in History and raising my children, when I came across a book, written by a Nobel laureate, Professor Ronald Coase, called Essays on Economics and Economists (1994). Why was this book important? Alfred Marshall, nephew of Charles Henry Marshall, was a prominent economist, and this book included two essays on him and his family.

What a goldmine!

Unfortunately, Coase did not present the Marshalls in a flattering light, claiming they were dishonest and self-aggrandising.

Coase described a meeting on the Turon goldfields between Charles and Nehemiah Bartley, who had written about his travels around Australia in Opals and Agates (1892).

Bartley wrote that he had come across Mr. Marshall, son of the Chief Cashier of the Bank of England. Coase claimed that this was deceitful of Charles Marshall, as he was not the son of the Chief Cashier, but the brother of a mere clerk at the Bank of England.

So, Alun and I decided to find out what Charles was doing on the Turon goldfields.

And this was where Professor Coase’s story started to unravel. We found that Charles had never been to Turon. It was Francis Marshall who was there, and he

was indeed the son of the Chief Cashier of the Bank of England. Coase had found the wrong Marshall and based many of his assumptions about the Marshall family on this incorrect information. Charles Marshall was not deceitful, nor was he big-noting himself. He wasn’t there.

Unravelling the mystery of the wrong Marshall has taken us over three years. With encouragement from academics and family members, we submitted a paper to the peer-reviewed journal, History of Political Economy, at the end of 2017, and, as is the case when dealing with journals such as these, our paper was eventually published in May 2020.

WORLD OF FINE FOOD TO TRY SOMEBODY FEED PHIL, NETFLIX Writer/producer and occasional actor Phil Rosenthal (the man behind the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond) takes a journey to five more foodie locations as he returns with his tasting tours of the world.

This is the third series of Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix (though it started on PBS in the US as I’ll Have What Phil’s Having, back in 2015).

With it’s sitcom-style theme song and Phil’s over-the-top personality it is easy to dismiss this show as a bit of a cringeworthy

exercise with an over-privileged white American “discovering” that other countries have interesting food culture too.

And on the surface, that’s what it is - but as you get used to Rosenthal’s personality you realise this documentary is a little more than that.

Rosenthal actually has a very warm personality and an enthusiastic love of both food and culture that he is keen to pass on and while he visits some of the top restaurants it’s when he visits a family home in the hills above Marrakesh or hangs out in a bar with a KPop star in Seoul that this show comes into its own (“If you want to

feel old and insignificant walk with a K Pop Star down the streets of Seoul” he quips).

This is probably aimed mainly at getting his fellow Americans, who rightly or wrongly have a reputation for going oversees and eating at places like McDonalds and KFC, to go to other countries and actually enjoy the local food.

However it’s also a beautifully shot travelogue and Rosenthal is warm and funny and interested in the locations, the food and the whole experience and in the end that’s infectious and it’s hard not to get caught up in all that too.

A SHOW WORTH FALLING FOR CRASH LANDING ON YOU NETFLIX South Korean television and films are the flavour of the month at the moment - it helps that Parasite won the Oscar for best picture this year but the interest was already peaking.

Crash Landing On You has been one of Netflix’ top rating programs of 2020 and with good reason - this 16-part show is a lot of fun and has to have one of the best meetcutes’ in television history.

Rich girl from South Korea accidentally gets swept into the demilitarized zone (DMZ) while paragliding and ends up falling from a tree into the waiting arms of a

North Korean soldier boy.

Our two star-crossed lovers Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) the South Korean heiress and Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin) the member of the North Korean elite then spend the rest of the series trying to get her home, dealing with some pretty sinister people and falling in love.

This is a lot of fun, funny, poignant and extremely well shot and although the dialogue (provided mainly by subtitles) tends towards the clunky on occasion, it somehow avoids a lot of the Romeo and Juliet tropes usually associated with this type of premise.

There is plenty of sad eyes and

handwringing as well as a lot of cutesy moments but it never tips completely over into melodrama as all four leads (his fiance and her sort of ex) are fully developed and rounded out over the course of the series.

It also manages to provide an interesting, well-thought out ending that doesn’t compromise the overall feeling of the show nor is it a saccharine Hollywood ending either.

Each episode feels so packed with drama that they almost feel like little individual movies and the music and settings just add to the experience (Mongolia apparently doubled for North Korea).

GENTLE HUMOUR IS CATCHING ON ROSEHAVEN, WEDNESDAY, ABCTV, 9PM Our favourite Real Estate Agents are back in a fourth series of the little show that could.

Who knew that a show about two best friends running a real estate agency in a small Tasmanian town would be such a big and well-watched part of the ABC Wednesday comedy line-up but this gentle and funny series just keeps on keeping on.

A lot of that has to be down to the three main cast members Celia Pacquola as Emma, Luke McGregor as Daniel and freetimes.com.au

the brilliant Kris McQuade as the acerbic and no-nonsense Barbara - principal of the estate agency and Daniel’s mum.

This time around there are big changes with Daniel nursing a broken heart (that he won’t acknowledge) after his break-up and he and Emma are house-sharing, while the Real Estate agency has changed offices.

The first episode, screening last week and still available on iView, saw Daniel trying to find his ex a new place to live and then realising the break up wasn’t as easy as he thought while Emma is fascinated by a package belonging to a former tenant of

their new premises (the end is worth sitting through what is one of the slower episodes).

This week as the pair realise they are spending too much time together between work and home they decide to audition for a third friend and of course everything goes wrong.

This is not over-the-top or in your face comedy - just gentle and fun with good writing and a cast that inhabits real characters but even in it’s fourth series it still keeps you watching.

War of the Worlds is an eight-part mini-series that reimagines H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi novel in modern-day Europe, and follows several families struggling to regroup after an alien attack.

The mini-series is slow to get going, but tense and compelling once it gets into gear. The first episode has several dry moments and jarring cuts, and this adaptation suffers from too many characters, which stretches the viewer’s attention.

However, the rest of the episode has an effective escalation of suspense, as trepidation over an alien signal grows into fear of an imminent attack, then erupts into urban chaos as people scramble for cover. The episode concludes with an arresting shot of a silent, devastated world.

Despite its present-day setting, War of the Worlds closely follows the major plot-points of the novel, including the alien crafts being mistaken for meteors, their massacre of mankind, the exodus from London and the protagonist journeying alone to reunite with his wife.

The second episode is bleaker, more focused and better-paced, concentrating on discreet groups for longer. Intrigue, hard choices and desperation develop within each family, and the narrative masterfully builds dread toward the alien forces by presenting them as a little-seen but deadly force.

War of the Worlds is an engaging slow-burn that accurately conveys the spirit of Wells’ novel, and screens on Thursday evenings on SBS. - Seth Lukas Hynes ●

Members of the Warwick Clay Target Club are pleased to be competing again after a COVID-19 hibernation.

SHOOTERS BACK ON TARGET The Warwick Clay Target Club is among local sporting organisations pleased to be back in operation following a COVID-19 ‘hibernation’.

The Club has a core base of around 60 members and has a regular competition day on the first Sunday of the month at their headquarters on Rosenthal Road, just off the New England Highway south of Warwick.

They held their first get-together and practice shoot the weekend before last and are also pleased to unveil new gates to their grounds, constructed by local contractor

Alex Bellingham of Bellingham Rural Fencing and funded through the Southern Downs Regional Council’s ‘Grants To Community’ program.

The WCTC is the only Olympic-grade clay target facility west of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland and has been in existence for more than two decades. New members are welcome and the Club offers ‘Come & Try’ days to those interested - if you’d like to have a crack at clay target shooting contact Graham Jackson on 0452 527 652 ... ●

US BEEFS UP QUEENSLAND June was another positive month for Australian beef exports, with 96,500 tonnes shipped weight (swt) exported according to Meat and Livestock Australia, though more Queensland beef is now headed to South Korea and the US than the traditional Chinese market.

MLA reported that the share of Queensland beef exports to China dropped away as plant suspensions impacted trade with the US now becoming the top destination for beef exports.

According to the latest report on the MLA website, figures were strong considering eastern states cattle slaughter had consistently tracked below the 2019 levels - back 8% on last year for the calendar year-to-June.

However total beef exports were back, to a lesser extent, down only three percent on 2019 levels.

The MLA reports export volumes had been robust considering the high level of turn-off last year and expectations for tighter cattle supplies this year.

They believe domestic constraints could place pressure on export volumes in the coming months, while international demand could fluctuate as COVID-19 lingers within key markets.

According to the group the US received 26,000 tonnes swt, in June making it the top destination for beef - up 30% compared to the same month last year. However, total shipments to the US are back 7% for the year-to-date on 2019.

The MLA said the uptick in exports had probably come from reduced US beef production through May, flowing through into product available for consumption in June. ●

The rarest taste in the pack comes from Ballandean Estate, whose Saperavi / Durif blend is reportedly a one-of-a-kind world-wide.

The inclusion of so many lesser known varieties in the tasting offering reflects the Granite Belt wine region’s growing reputation as one of Australia’s top producers of alternative variety wines known on the Granite Belt as Strange Bird Wines. Enjoyed in Europe for generations, these alternative varieties are now emerging as Australian favourites due to their ability to match perfectly with our food preferences. To be called an alternative, a variety must represent not more than 1% of the total bearing vines in Australia as defined by Wine Australia.

Aussie wine lovers will have access to the expert commentary of a ‘Master of Wine’ in their own home this winter, as the Granite Belt delivers live digital wine tastings.

This is first for the Granite Belt, with 12 wineries partnering with Andrew Corrigan, MW (Master of Wine) to provide a series of digital tasting sessions to enhance the at home tasting experience for wines ordered for home delivery.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR SEEDS...

I stumbled on an article by a fellow gardener from America recently and found some of his tips were very interesting.

Some, like how to deter deer and ground hogs from our gardens, not so applicable, but who knows what the future holds!

Where I am at the moment feral deer are becoming a problem and exclusion fencing is being used in an attempt to keep them out of cropping country. They seem to be a particularly adaptable animal and are now seen in our arid areas, eg. around Bourke, as well as in the higher rainfall areas. My son often sees mobs of them on the highway through the main part of Murrurundi as he drives the truck at night. It is my opinion, that the problems we have with other introduced species in Australia, eg. feral pigs, will be dwarfed by the problems looming with deer. Determined ones will easily clear a 2 metre exclusion fence in a single bound!

Some of the more applicable suggestions though, are as follows: Instead of buying potting soil or seed raising mix, use some of your garden soil, after all this is what the seedlings will be growing in once you plant them out.

However you will need to put some soil in a large baking tray and cook it at about 180 degrees for about 30 minutes to sanitise the soil and kill off any weed seeds that might be lurking.

If you are starting your seeds outside, consider mixing flavoured gelatine into the soil! This will apparently feed the beneficial bacteria in the soil and give your seedlings a nitrogen boost as they come up ... no suggestion as to preferred flavour was given!!

After you have planted your seeds into this mix, sprinkle the top of the ground with cinnamon to keep away fungus that may cause damping. Sounds more like a recipe for something in the kitchen than in the garden.

If it is cuttings you are trying to start in water, a tablet or two of aspirin ground up and dissolved will help with the uptake of water and speed up the formation of roots.

Bicarb soda is also useful in the garden so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned. I use it all the time in the house for cleaning everything from my oven to adding it to the washing machine to make the detergent more effective, but apparently it also makes for sweeter tomatoes!

As much as I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like spiders, apparently I should be encouraging them into the garden as well, as each year they eat more bugs than the weight off all the humans on earth. This â&#x20AC;&#x153;factâ&#x20AC;? is almost unbelievable!!

Another tip I liked was a use for onion and garlic skins, as, at the moment, they just go in the rubbish because I was told not to put them in the compost bin. I should put them in a container, cover with water and put a lid on, leave them for a week, strain the resulting liquid and I will have natural, effective aphid and spider spray.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how I rationalise this with the previous idea of encouraging spiders into the garden!!

Lastly, another unusual idea is that hair is very beneficial for gardens. It deters pests, works as a natural mulch and provides nitrogen to the soil! I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that I could handle the aesthetics of hair as a mulch. I think I would have to dig it in to get the fertiliser benefits and that seems too much like work, so maybe this is one idea Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll give a miss!

However, as these suggestions are all cheap to do and all things I always have on hand, they will certainly be given a try this spring.

Add about 2 tablespoons to the hole you are planting in, cover with a couple of inches of soil, then put a teaspoon of unflavoured gelatin and a teaspoon of cinnamon as close to the roots as possible. The suggestion is that the gelatin will feed and encourage the helpful bacteria and the cinnamon will keep away fungus and cutworms and the carb soda will give sweeter tomatoes. The plant should have been stripped of all but the topmost leaves and planted deeply and it will bolt away if planted where it will get full sun.

I had learnt many years ago from an old friend, that Epsom salts watered in around citrus would make for sweeter fruit, but had not heard of using carb soda on tomatoes.

Cinnamon sprinkled on cabbages apparently also keeps cabbage worms away.

Another suggestion was to puree my banana peels with water and pour it around the tomato plants as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;pick me upâ&#x20AC;?!

Apparently this is what I should be doing with all my vegetable peels - quick compost, and my plants will love me for it.

Also I should plant marigolds in my vegetable patch to keep the pests away and provide somewhere for those beneficial aphid eating ladybirds to lay their eggs. It would certainly make it all look pretty!

Mint also keeps unwanted bugs away but be sure to have it contained as it will spread quickly and become a pest in itself.

SPORT STARTING TO RETURN It has, to say the least, been a tough time for sportsmen and women, administrators and fans locally and beyond in recent times.

I feel must be on the improve. Some local sports are edging back to a start in a new and sometimes challenging environment. Hopefully that light at the end of tunnel is getting brighter. Abiding by a new set of rules and applying yet another dose of hand sanitizer is surely not too high a price to pay.

I was thrilled to see Cricket back in action albeit it in England and then the Broncos finally managed a win. It could be the win that allows the Broncos to paper over the cracks and pretend all is well. I hope that is not the case. It was however a win and Broncos fans will take any positive they can get at the moment.

Fans probably should enjoy that sense of euphoria that came with the win because I am afraid it may not last too long.

On the international cricket scene, there was little joy for the Poms (sigh) after the first Test against the West Indies.

It is great to see a Windies team back on top in a red ball game and in England to boot.

There has been something not quite right in the world order of cricket since the West Indies fell into the Test Cricket doldrums.

The final day of the first Test played behind closed doors in Southampton was a gripping affair. The Windies were chasing a 200 runs to win in a see-sawing contest.

The tourists lost three quick wickets and at 3/27 the pendulum had swung in favour of the Poms.

But there were more twists and turns to come. English opener John Campbell retired hurt; brought undone by the bowling of English quick Jofra Archer.

A magnificent knock of 95 by Jermaine Blackwood put the visitors back in a winning position. Blackwood showed plenty of ticker against the English attack before he was dismissed with his side needing only 11 runs for victory.

His dismissal brought a limping John Campbell back to the crease. It was left to Campbell and his captain and fast bowler Jason Holder to scamper through for the winning runs giving the Windies a memorable four wicket win.

Not too long ago sport and especially International sport of any ilk seemed a far off dream. Let’s hope that this fluctuating contest was just a tasty entree for what lies ahead after what has been, and are crazy times.

Now if the Broncos can just conjure another win this week Queenslanders will know we have surely turned the sporting corner.

- Casey SUCCESS FOR FILLY WITH LOCAL CONNECTION With the easing of the COVID restriction punters returned to Corbould Park last Saturday just in time for one of the Sunshine Coast’s signature race meeting which included the running of the Winx Guineas and the Bruce McLachlan Classic.

It’s fair to say regular Stanthorpe golfers Robert Reeves and Stephen Kay had more on their mind last Saturday than chasing a little white ball around the golf course.

Club rivalries have been put aside this season as players from various clubs come together as Stanthorpe United to play in the Football Toowoomba Premier league. The team is pictured prior to their opening round win over Highfields on Saturday night. at Corbould Park to cheer home their impressive filly Kisukano in the Bruce McLachlan Classic. It was an exciting win by the filly who was bred by the Reeves family and is out of their brood mare Kiss for Gran. The remaining members of teh syndicate all have a local flavour. Included in the group are John Gordon of Allora, Peter Anderson who played football in Stanthorpe alongside Robbie Reeves, local pharmacist Michael Lane and Robbie Reeves brother in law Brett Eagleton.

The filly was ridden by Mark Du Plessis and with the win took her record to four wins and a second from just five starts.

The filly is trained in Toowoomba by Michael Nolan. The normally unflappable Nolan admitted after teh win that he was quite nervous going into the race, hoping the Bel Esprit filly would live up to her good early form.

Neither trainer, jockey nor owners need have been concerned as she made light of her 60.5kg impost clearing away for an easy win.

The question for connections is where to next for the promising filly?

Nolan believes she is ready to take the next step up in grade to stakes level.

Peter Reeves flagged a possible start in a QTIS Fillies race at Doomben on July 25..

Connections are happy to play it by ear but Peter Reeves admits they have an eye on some races in Sydney during the upcoming Spring Carnival if the filly continues to step up.

FOOTBALL ACADAMEY GEARED UP FOR START One of the local junior sporting groups looking forward to a resumption of activities - training and fixtures - is the Southern Downs Football Academy (SDFA).

SDFA players compete in the Toowoomba Football League in conjunction with the USQ FC and fixtures commence this Saturday 18 July and will run all the way through to November.

The SDFA is also welcoming players from around the region who would like to train with the Academy over the remainder of the year - the offer is open to any club as the SDFA is a training provider - for enquiries contract Director of Coaching Tim Gaske on 0434 211 441.

The goal of SDFA is to provide an opportunity for all players regardless of age or ability to develop their potential and provide pathways for players to compete in

competitions of their choosing, including outside the region.

SDFA training re-commenced on Monday of this week and Monday training times ongoing at Queens Park in Warwick are as follows U6-U12: 4-5pm U13 and above: 5.15 -6.15pm HANSEN AND MCLENNAN WINNERS IN QUALIFYING Last Saturday 60 players lined up for the Warwick Men’s 4BBB Handicap Matchplay Stoke Qualifying event. If an agreement cannot be reached on a day to play matches, then the match will commence at 11am on the closing date of the scheduled game.

WOLVES CLAIM FIRST SCALP The Warwick Wolves U16/17 team worked very hard to secure a 2-1 victory over Highfields on Saturday night in their first game of the Toowoomba Football season.

It was the first hit out for the composite Warwick Wolves team and it was understandable that combinations were a little shaky at the start of the game. The up tempo pace of the game tested also the players fitness. Despite this the Wolves were first to score through George Greenaway.

After the early goal the nerves looked to settle and the players began to play with more confidence.. Mick Westerhout and Bryon Whittaker played strongly in the centre of defence. They were well out wide

by Mark Skinner and Joey Brown who was playing in a new role at right fullback.

Opportunities continued to be created at each end however it was the Wolves who capitalized early in the second half when George Greenaway scored his second.

Wolves striker Harry Whittaker had an unlucky day hitting the goal posts on a number of occasions while Noah Dwan also kept the Highfields keeper busy with a number of near misses. Highfields were rewarded for their hard work and persistence with a late goal with only minutes remaining on the clock. IN an exciting finish Wolves held on for an exciting first up win.

This Wolves are a combined squad of Stanthorpe and Warwick players who had a desire to play competitive football in 2020. Unfortunately there were not enough players within their local towns to make up a team.

Playing as the Warwick Wolves will allow players to play up into the Wolves men’s team if/when needed.

THE SPIN From page 25 The coaches hail from Stanthorpe and the manager lives is Warwick. All three are working closely together to ensure players can train twice a week in preparation for their weekend games.

As players become more familiar with each other’s style of play and the team structure develops there will be a level of improvement. Further improvement will continue only if the same enthusiasm and commitment they are showing now continues during the season.

Regardless of how the team performs for the remainder of the season, the fact that the players from both centres are prepared to put in the hours of travel and a commitment to playing football is testament to their determination and passion for the sport.

Meanwhile the Warwick Wolves Men’s team resume their season on Saturday with an away game against the Gatton Redbacks.

The Wolves will be looking to pick up from where they left off when the season went into lock down. The Redbacks were in scintillating form in the opening two games of the season scoring 5-1 wins against USQ and Willowburn.

JUNIOR IN FINE FORM The good form of junior golfer Leighton Thurston caught the eye in the Stableford comepitition in Stanthorpe last Saturday.

Thurston’s score of 43 points was good enough to take the chocolates in the men’s division. It was successive wins for the junior who continues to reduce his AGU handicap. The young player has been receiving some professional coaching from Sam at Warwick Golf Club and it is clear those lessons are paying dividends.

In the Ladies comepitition Neta Thouard’s winning form from the previous week flowed on to Saturday’s event and she racked up another win. Thouard’s score of 33 points came from an outward nine of 17 and she was back home in 16 for her winning total. A little birdie tells us that her score could have been better but for a nopointer at the 11th hole.

Saturday’s event was sponsored by Reece Plumbing and their continued support is greatly appreciated by the club and members.

The remainder of the field played out for the minor trophies. In the men’s section, the junior’s were certainly showing the rest how to play. Another of the junior brigade, Andrew Burgess returned the runner’s up score of 39 points. Doesn’t look like Burgess is too far off another win himself.

In the best of the rest run down it was Wes Smith (38), Tom Fittock (37) and Ian Henderson (36).

After a countback between Sandra Morris and Margie Locke (both players returned 32 points for their round) it was Sandra who collected the runner up prize.

Margie collected the ladies run down prize.

There is a time sheet on the board at the clubhouse for the game this Saturday and players are reminded to follow the usual procedure for arranging a game.

FIRST BLOOD TO UNITED The Stanthorpe United Men’s team enjoyed a strong 3-0 win over Highfields Football club in their inaugural game in the Football Toowoomba Premier league last Saturday night.

It was refreshing to see local club rivalries put aside with the team representative of some of the best football talent Stanthorpe has to offer.

Jared Hitchener’s high work rate out wide was rewarded with United’s first goal.

Receiving the ball just inside the Highfields half, Hitchener dashed down the right flank outpacing three defenders and calmly slotted the ball inside the near post to give United a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later a 25 metre shot from Purcell forced a great save from the Highfields keeper. From the ensuing corner Josh Crestani guided the ball into the net off a deflected header. There was plenty of sideline celebrating from Crestani’s brothers Cameron and Andrew who were at the game.

After a good performance in the team’s warm up game against Warwick earlier in the week, Ben Rametta continued his excellent goal scoring form. A strong individual effort from Rametta resulted in United’s third goal just before half time.

At the break, Coach Brad Rub highlighted some areas to work on in the second half. While United dominated field position and created a number of opportunities they could not add to their tally.

United keeper Jamie Carnell had little to do in the second half, but when he was called into action showed courage, commitment and confidence, diving at opponents feet and quickly defusing potentially dangerous attacks.

Aiden Halford played a tough, but disciplined role in the central defence and directed his young backline of Lanza, Hitchener and Crestani well.

Coach Brad Rub was pleased with the team’s winning performance saying it will give the players plenty of confidence going forward.

Rub has however identified some areas in which the team can improve saying that while the team created opportunities up front they can be more clinical.

The result may provided the perfect start for United, but the squad is under no illusion how much harder the Toowoomba competition will be as the season unfolds.

And it starts Sunday at 3pm at Captain Cook Reserve Fields when the team clashes with Toowoomba outfit Rockville Rovers.

The game will pit the coach Brad Rub up against his former club. Rub said is looking forward to the head to head clash.

The players would love to see a big contingent of Stanthorpe football fans at Captain Cook Reserves to support them.

Sporters again find themselves haunted by the ghost of the golfers scourge - “Slow Play”. A reminder to all players - if your group falls more than one full fairway behind the group ahead, you are holding up the group following behind. The low marker in the group is responsible for calling up the waiting group and letting them play through.

According to my knowledgeable sources, nothing spoils a game of golf more than standing around on a tee waiting for a slow group in front to extract the digit.

ORIENTEERS BACK ON COURSE Sunday’s Orienteering event in the Passchendale forest was a very successful.

After an enforced hiatus due to COVID-19 50, not even predicted rain could dampen the enthusiasm of the 50 participants many of whom travelled from Toowoomba, Inglewood, Warwick and Brisbane to join the Stanthorpe Orienteers.

The Stanthorpe weather conditions provided something for everyone one. After some light drizzle early in the morning, the rain held off and there were even bursts of sunshine and blue skies.

The club’s last event was back in March and competitors enjoyed the opportunity to get out in the bush again after months of isolation. The Orienteering community and Bullecourt Bounders are planning to conduct monthly events until the end of the season in October.

PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR MIDWEEK COMP 26 ladies enjoyed perfect winter golfing conditions on Wednesday July 7 for the Single Stroke event sponsored by KFC who are staunch supporters of Warwick Golf. Congratulation to Anne Lyons on her winning score of 69 nett. Runner-up was Janet Davis with 71 nett. Janet Davis

and Sharron Cooper but it was Davis who got the nod with balls in the rundown.

Other featuring in the run down were Di Macdonald (72), Liz Cockram, Zel Crook (73). Extra balls to Gwen Mills (74), Roslyn Darton, Marg Adcock (75) and Yvonne Pinington (77).

This week the Ladies played a Single Stableford on Wednesday from the white markers with trophies donated by Warwick Sandstone for the 18-hole winner and both 9’s. Look for results in next week’s Spin.

For those players not involved in the Matchplay semi finals this Saturday a single Stableford played from the red markers has been scheduled. The event sponsored by the Coffee Club. A reminder that on Wednesday July 22 play will be for the July Mid-Week Medal.

EXCITING GOLF AND CLOSE CONTESTS PRESIDENT’S COMEPITITION On Saturday a field of 32 Ladies played the qualifying round of the President’s Foursomes. Unfortunately, the President’s afternoon tea had to be postponed until a future date due to Covid 19 restrictions.

Mary Young and Judy Lester returned a great score of 69.5 nett to take the honours.

Runners up were Liz Cockram and Molly Scotney with a score of 74. The pair had to survive a countback with Michelle Wright and Gwen Mills also finishing on 74 nett.

Balls in the rundown went to Michelle Wright and Gwen Mills (74), Annice Payne and Tub Ingall (75.5), Jill Barnes and Ros Darton (77.5), Anna Cox and Mel McLennan (79).

After Saturday’s results the following teams qualified for the Matchplay quarter finals on Sunday.

With a forecast of wet weather last Sunday, many players were woken by rain during the night but were relieved when by tee off the rain had moved on leaving the course a little damp but in good shape for play.

Congratulations to Liz Cockram and Molly Scotney had a win on the 17th (3/1).

Annice Payne and Tub Ingall had success on the 18th (2 up). Mel McLennan and Anna Cox had a win on the 19th hole and Mary Young and Judy Lester had success on the 20th.

Games were very close and exciting and players are to be congratulated on their good form. BACK ROLLING Bowlers from the Southern Cross Bowls Club are losing no time getting back into the roll of things since the easing of restrictions 20 bowlers were on deck on Saturday eager to compete in another one of Games Director Clark’s well organised competitions.

ROLL-UPS NOW; A GRADE SINGLES AROUND CORNER Warwick East Bowls Club continues to host roll-ups on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons, commencing at 1.00 p.m.

The Ladies meet for roll-ups on Tuesday mornings at 9.00 a.m.

Players are looking forward to the A grade singles competition which gets underway on Saturday July 25.

The first round will begin at 10.00 a.m. and the second round at 2.00 pm with the semi-finals and finals to be decided the following Saturday.

Social bowls will be played on both days to accommodate those not playing in the comepitition. Markers will be required for the opening rounds. The draw will be announced after nominations close on Saturday July 18. Be sure to get your nominations in early.

LOOKING FOWARD TO INTER DISTRICT CARNIVAL Although there will be no Netball season in Stanthorpe in 2020 netballer payers and officials were excited to learn the Darling Downs inter-district carnival in Toowoomba will proceed on August 2.

The news has given at least 50 Stanthorpe netballers something to look forward to. It is anticipated five Stanthorpe teams will line up for the carnival :-an open team, under 16s, under 14s and two under-12 teams The players will be back on court this week as training under strict COVID Safe plans commences in preparation for the carnival.

Teams from Toowoomba, Warwick, Goondiwindi, Kingaroy and Roma and other nearby centres are expected to take part in the inter- district carnival.

CHILLY CONDITIONS AT SUMMIT The Summit area is well known as one of the Granite Belt’s coldest areas and last Saturday bowlers braved bitterly cold conditions on the Summit greens. But it is winter and they breed ‘em tough on the Granite Belt so it was s no w surprise to see 14 brave or crazy bowlers playing triples and two pairs’ games.

On rink four Brian Brown, Carl Sutherland and Brian Wilmot had a 14-4 win over their opponents Paul Zamprogno, rick Smith and Graeme Warner.

They say practice makes perfect and Daryl Busch has apparently putting in plenty of practise over at East’s. He is picking up some great tips from Ralph on what not to do. Together with Marion Skaines from Clifton, (who must have scored most of the points), the pair somehow came out on top in the day’s comepitition. Congratulations to the winners. I hear they will be enjoying a couple of six packs.

The Runners up were Thea Francis and Geoff Davis who received meal vouchers from the Criterion Hotel. They appeared a sluggish after the fantastic afternoon tea and were knocked about a bit by Joe Torrisi and Noel Fletcher who saved their best bowls until the last round.

Barry “Pitcher” Frame won the lucky sweep and is now good for a small loan or a big shout.

The Monthly Turkey Triples is back on the agenda and will be played on August 12.

LADIES SEVEN’S COMP GETS UNDERWAY The Water Rat’s ladies team has their first hit out this weekend. The seven’s side play the Toowoomba Bears, USQ Saints, and Toowoomba Rangers at the USQ Toowoomba ovals in what should be an exciting day of carnival style play.. Games commence at 10.30am.

The Men’s season also gets underway this weekend but fans of the Water Rats will have to wait until the following week to see their team in action as the Rats have a Round one bye. The team will make their first appearance in the B Grade Bill Flamsteed Trophy competition against the Toowoomba Rangers in Round two.

BIG NUMBERS EXPECTED IN TOUCH COMP With no rugby league to be played on the Southern Downs in 2020 there is expected to be even greater interest in the upcoming Touch football season which kicks off on July 22.

President of the Touch Association, Justin Nolan says he is expecting even bigger numbers for this season.

In an effort to entice previous and new players to the sport there will be reduction in fees. All teams that played last season will automatically requalify for the new season, and their registration fees will be waived. New players and new teams will be required to pay fees with nominations remain open right up to the kick-off date.

While social distancing, hand and equipment sanitizing will apply off field and at this stage spectators will be required to remain in their vehicles there will be nos restrictions or alterations to the on field rules.

A grand final date is yet to be announced but it is expected that the 2020 will run through until November / December.
