I had the pleasure of catching up with Bev Ruskey of Spring Creek Mountain Cafe and Cottages for this week’s cover story.

After nearly two decades running one of the most popular tourism venues in the region - and popular both with locals and visitors - Bev has sold the property and is looking forward to retirement. As well as reflecting on her time in business she’s also shared her views on the future promotion of the Southern Downs and Granite Belt from a tourism perspective, which is timely.

It’s a complex topic on which it could well be said there’s a ‘divergence’ of views, but I agree with Bev that we have an abundance of natural beauty across the Warwick and Stanthorpe and wider areas. The question for the long-term is how do we best capitalise on that and there’s perhaps no easy answer. But if COVID-19 has taught us nothing else it’s that from time to time it’s beneficial to ‘step back’ and look at the bigger picture. Sometimes the best and most creative ideas are born during times of the greatest adversity. Food for thought?

The Listers did round-the-clock shifts at Jeremy’s bedside during a lengthy hospital stay.

FAMILY’S TRIBUTE TO MEDICAL TEAMS James and Belinda Lister have thanked the local community for an outpouring of wellwishes in recent weeks while their eldest son Jeremy recovers from meningitis.

The State MP for Southern Downs has told the Free Times he believes quick action by medical staff at Stanthorpe Hospital was “most likely life-saving” shortly before Jeremy, 9, was airlifted to Toowoomba back on Tuesday 23 June.

The family returned home last Sunday after an extended stay at both Toowoomba Hospital and the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, with James’ parents Paul and Jennifer having looked after the Listers’ younger son, William, who has been well.

meningitis which is more serious and less common than viral meningitis - both conditions are usually severe and potentially life-threatening, but are also relatively rare.

Meningitis is a severe inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and the spinal cord, with Jeremy also having contracted a blood infection. It is not known how he contracted meningitis but James Lister says a ‘broad-spectrum’ antibiotic administered at Stanthorpe Hospital was crucial.

Jeremy will now require at least a month of further tests and monitoring at Stanthorpe Hospital and continued courses of antibiotic treatment.

He told the Free Times this week he has little recollection of first becoming sick, other than remembering “vomiting and having headaches and neck-aches”.

“I thought it would be over pretty quickly, but it wasn’t,” Jeremy said this week.

He also had to endure numerous needles, an IV cannula, two lumbar punctures and a feeding tube, which he said “felt very weird going in, but it felt better when it came out”.

Jeremy was free of fever for 24 hours by last Sunday afternoon which prompted the all-clear to return home. He can return to school when it resumes next week but will need to avoid most physical exertion for the time being.

Belinda Lister said her son had lost some weight and had spent most of the time in hospital sleeping - and is “still lethargic” and she and James had taken “round the clock” shifts by Jeremy’s bedside during the hospital stays.

“It was a very severe case and there is still a risk of complications but we’re just

so grateful to the staff at all three hospitals, everyone has just been fantastic,” Belinda said.

James Lister said he and Belinda had run into two other local Stanthorpe families with children while in hospital over the past several weeks.

“We’re just so fortunate to have wonderful medical staff at Stanthorpe Hospital and also being relatively close to Toowoomba and Brisbane,” James said.

“Belinda and I would like to sincerely thank everyone in the community for their well-wishes and their prayers and offers of support.

“And a special thanks indeed to my mum and dad who have been looking after William while we’ve been away.” ●

ith tourism in Queensland in focus as the state continues to grapple with the challenges of COVID-19 and ‘the borders’, one of this region’s leading tourism operators has shared her thoughts on the industry - and nearly two decades in the sector - as she prepares to move on to the next chapter of her life.

Bev Ruskey has owned and operated Spring Creek Mountain Cafe and Cottages for the past 18 years, high on the Main Range above Killarney with views which have become synonymous with the famed natural beauty of our part of the world, and a ‘must-do’ location for visitors.

After being on the market for the past several years - and having been in no particular hurry to sell - Bev recently accepted an offer for the iconic location from an interested party from outside the

region and will close her doors after this weekend, with the new owners intending to enjoy the property as a private residence.

The business has long been a major drawcard for the Killarney and wider region, and as a passionate ‘foodie’ Bev has been a strong supporter of locally-grown produce and the overall ‘paddock-to-plate’ concept, which has become enormously popular in recent years with metro-based visitors.

She’s looking forward to an imminent move to Brisbane to be closer to family - she hails originally from Brisbane’s ‘Bayside’ and the opportunity to explore her desire to travel.

But she says she’ll miss her legions of visitors, many of whom have become regulars over the years, and admits the thing she’ll miss the most is “the view”.

Bev and her late husband Bruce bought the 60-acre property after having spotted it for sale back in 1991 while visiting the Killarney area.

Back then it was bare of improvements - save for fencing for cattle grazing and pasture - but the couple had a clear idea of what it could become from a tourism perspective, and also as simply a pleasant place to live and to work.

It was to be another decade before they made the move from Brisbane, and sadly Bruce passed away suddenly while the cafe and cottages were in the process of being built. But Bev pressed ahead with the vision they had both shared, and will shortly leave behind one of the most iconic and successful tourism venues in the region.

Over the years thousands of visitors have enjoyed meals and refreshments while taking in the glorious views - including ‘the Teviot’ - from the verandahs and outdoor seating areas, while many others have cherished the cottages as a place to make an ‘escape’ from busy lives - including the constant demands of mobile phones and the general digital-connectedness of life.

“I had the property on the market for a while and there’d been a lot of interest but the right offer just hadn’t come along,” Bev told the Free Times.

“Then we had coronavirus on top of us and of course that was a huge impact, we were forced to shut down for a period - but to be honest I quite enjoyed just living here and appreciating the views.

“Then about a month ago a different agent contacted me asking to list the property and a buyer just came out of the blue, it all happened very quickly which was quite surprising given the COVID situation.

“There’s been all kinds of rumours floating around about who the buyer is and what they intend to do.

“I can honestly say that all I know is they’ve bought it in terms of a ‘going concern’ - including things like the bed linen and the kitchen equipment - but their intention is to live here as a private residence.

It’s such a stunning location,” Venessa says.

“And of course that’s entirely up to them - I have no idea if they have any future plans but it wouldn’t appear so.

“It’s the view that I’ll miss the most - it’s just the most perfect place, with the wildlife and the climate up here.

“During COVID I’ve been sitting here thinking wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the money to just be able to enjoy living here without having to pay the bills.

“I’ve made some beautiful friends in the Killarney area and I will miss them hugely, and I’ve been lucky to have some loyal and lovely staff.

“And I’ve had many, many regulars, lots of return visitors and that’s something I’ve been very grateful for.

“But it’s also been long hours for about 18 years and I have to say I’m looking forward to not doing anything.

“A few people have said, ‘You’ve been so used to being so busy all the time, how will you be able to do nothing?’

“I’ve said well, just watch me.”

Like everyone in the Queensland tourism and hospitality sector Bev was forced to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions - she closed down completely for two months - but has also seen a significant ‘up-lift’ in her own numbers since unlimited travel was introduced within the Sunshine State back in May, along with the re-opening of National Parks.

She agrees with other operators in the region that the continued Queensland border closure has probably been beneficial for the Southern Downs and Granite Belt,

with Queenslanders re-discovering our part of the world, as well as some visiting for the first time.

“Like everyone else we changed our menu to suit the restricted number of visitors, we offered a takeaway menu as well for the locals and that all helped to keep things ticking over,” Bev says.

“I quite liked working three days a week, but when the demand is there which it has been in recent weeks you have to make hay while the sun shines.”

As she prepares to leave the tourism sector Bev Ruskey - always known as something of a ‘straight-shooter’ - shared a few of her thoughts on the future of tourism in the region.

Tourism promotion and marketing has long been a topic of intense debate in the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas, both pre- and post-council amalgamation, and COVID-19 has re-ignited some of those debates, having afforded operators the chance to step back from the day-to-day and re-assess their longer-term strategies.

As things stand, Granite Belt tourism operators have their own marketing body - Granite Belt Wine & Tourism or ‘GBWT’ - and there’s been recent discussion in the Warwick area around re-establishing a Warwick-centred tourism organisation, with the former Warwick Tourism and Events having disbanded several years back.

A whole-of-region body - Destination Southern Downs - was relatively short-lived,

“Obviously if you’re an operator you have to be prepared to have a ‘user-pays’ component of tourism promotion, there’s no free lunches and you can’t expect the council to do everything.

“I was all for Destination Southern Downs - it should have been a real success but the previous council pulled its funding and I’m not sure the new council we now have really gives two hoots about tourism, but I suppose time will tell.

“You can be good at talking the talk, but you have to walk the walk.”

Bev is also adamant the appeal to visitors of ‘nature tourism’ should never be underestimated.

“I’d like to see the council lobbying higher governments for a greater investment in our National Parks and places of scenic beauty,” she says.

“People want that nature experience, that’s what visitors say to me constantly.

“The walking trails and cycling, viewing platforms, why not even a sky-rail in this region?

“These things can be developed in a way that has a low impact on the environment, it’s been done elsewhere successfully.

“Even trails along the old railway corridors through the region, people would love to go on walking tours following those.

“I think there’s a huge potential there and we’re only really scratching the surface.

“But it needs to be more than just me saying it.”

with the previous council administration having withdrawn its funding and the council then taking over primary responsibility for tourism ‘in-house’.

Bev feels strongly there needs to be a ‘shared vision’ for promoting the region as a whole to the outside visitor, and that a single tourism marketing body would be beneficial.

“There’s been a lot of reports and a lot of consultation over the years with local operators and I’ve been pretty involved in all of that,” Bev says.

“I do think we need a strategy and an organisation that covers both ends - both the Warwick and the Stanthorpe areas.

“Other regions are leaving us behind with their marketing and promotion - the Scenic Rim is an example of that, but you can also look at a lot of other similar regions around the country where they’ve got their act together a lot better than we have.

“We really do have everything in this region - we have an abundance of natural beauty and local produce, we have two great towns and a whole lot of beautiful small villages in between and all of them have something to offer.

“We need to look at the region through the eyes of the visitor.

“I’ve always sold Granite Belt produce here - the Warwick and the Stanthorpe areas complement each other and we send tourists back the other way which benefits everyone.

“I think we need to move away from this ‘us and them’ idea, this thing of looking back over our shoulders all the time and

“IT’S BEEN BONKERS” Tourism operators on the Granite Belt have no qualms about the Queensland border closure of recent times, saying it’s been a boom for business as Queenslanders have set about “re-discovering” their state - and in particular what our own region has to offer.

Martin Cooper is the president of Stanthorpe-area tourism promotional body Granite Belt Wine & Tourism (GBWT) and is also the proprietor of Ridgemill Estate Winery at Broadwater, which offers cottage accommodation as well as cellar door wine tasting and sales. Like many such local venues Ridgemill Estate has been welcoming visitors in their droves and is all but fully booked-out until October.

“It’s just been bonkers,” Martin told the Free Times this week.

“Our cabins have been chock-ablock, as of this week we have one night’s vacancy between now and October.

“Pretty well all of the accommodation venues in the area are similar.

“Primarily it’s people from Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and a lot of them are people who’ve visited the Granite Belt previously, but what’s been interesting is that there’s also a lot of people who are coming here for the first time.

“I think that’s what the border lockdown has done, it’s made Queenslanders think about exploring their own state and places they haven’t been to before.

“Some of them are discovering for the first time that Queensland has a wine industry.

“Overall there seems to have been a pent-up tourism demand.

“Our cellar door traffic has also increased significantly - we’ve also found with the social distancing restrictions and people needing to be seated for wine tasting we’ve made serving a bit more personable.

“So there’s been some good and unexpected lessons from it all.”

Martin Cooper was the chair of a tourism review group which preceded the establishment of Destination Southern Downs but his present view is that for the Stanthorpe area Granite Belt Wine & Tourism is doing an effective marketing job, and he doesn’t support the re-creation of a single tourism body for the whole region.

“We went down the path of a single entity with Destination Southern Downs and it was funded for a year but I think the model we have here on the Granite Belt is working well,” he said.

“The Warwick and Stanthorpe areas have very different tourism cultures - tourism in Warwick is very much focussed around events.

“GBWT has around 120 members primarily from the accommodation and the food and beverage sectors and it’s very representative of our sector.”

The Free Times sought comment from Warwick Chamber of Commerce president Tracy Dobie on suggestions the Chamber is looking to form a Warwick-area tourism body - response next week.

TOURISM FUND APPLICATION ...

The Southern Downs Regional Council has applied for a share in the Queensland Government’s $25 million ‘Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund’,

established in response to COVID-19.

Local projects put forward for consideration are •฀Construction of Stage 1 of the Stanthorpe Botanical Gardens (maximum grant funding $5,000,000) •฀Establishment of a public Wi-Fi network in Ballandean, Killarney, Stanthorpe and Warwick (approx. $500,000) •฀Relocation of the Warwick Visitor Information Centre (maximum grant funding $5,000,000) •฀Relocation of the Stanthorpe Art Gallery (maximum grant funding $5,000,000) •฀Shade within Weeroona Park, near to the band shell (approx. $500,000) The SDRC also says the future of events in the region will be the focus of “a comprehensive events strategy” to be commissioned this financial year.

A spokeswoman said the announcement “comes after a successful submission for Building Better Regions funding was made by Council’s Economic Development and Tourism team”.

“The funding, which totals $21,037, will allow professional contractors to carefully map the future of events across the Southern Downs in consultation with Council and the region’s event stakeholders,” the spokeswoman said.

“The aim of the strategy is to assist and future-proof existing events, attract a diverse range of events to the region and develop new events to drive tourism to provide an economic boost to local businesses.”

President of the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival 2020 Max Hunter said an events strategy will be

“highly beneficial for regional areas and their events”.

“A solid strategy can help identify the potential viability of future events, their sustainability into the future and succession planning,” he said.

“Planning an event for regions can be a challenge as many other areas are also looking to develop attractions for the visitor market.

“It is the combination of supporting and nurturing experiences and ideas along with identifying resources and vital infrastructure requirements that often get overlooked when planning to launch and manage budgets and financial viability.

“Quite often we get caught up with the enthusiasm of trying to reinvent the wheel, and lose sight of the fact that strategic planning and infrastructure are paramount in event outcomes.”

The council spokeswoman said the SDRC’s Economic Development and Tourism team “hopes to secure a contractor and start work on the region’s first event strategy in the coming months”.

The Southern Downs Regional Council contributes $68,000 a year for membership of Southern Queensland Country Tourism (SQCT), a ‘Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO)’.

SQCT includes the regions of Toowoomba and Darling Downs, Southern Downs and Granite Belt and the Western Country (including Balonne and Western Downs).

It covers the six local government areas of Southern Downs, Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Western Downs, Balonne and South Burnett and is one of 13 RTOs recognised by Tourism and Events Queensland. ●

Goondiwindi Regional Council this month unveiled a new campaign to promote the region as a tourism destination and encourage visitors to #VisitGoondiwindiRegion.

A spokesman said the campaign “will feature new promotional photography and marketing to highlight destinations and activities from across the Goondiwindi region”.

“It will be rolled out over the coming weeks on Facebook and Instagram as part of Council’s COVID-19 Community and Economic Support package to support local tourism operators and related businesses,” the spokesman said.

Goondiwindi Mayor Lawrence Springborg said now is “an excellent opportunity for the Goondiwindi region’s tourism, as Queenslanders have been given the go-ahead to get on the road and our borders will soon be open to most other states”.

“Our region has so much to offer potential visitors and the new campaign will invite them to find out for themselves why we’re known as ‘Regional Australia at its best’.

“We’ll be showcasing highlights from right across the region to hopefully inspire their next trip here whether it’s to sample some gourmet local produce, experience real country hospitality or discover the newlypainted GrainCorp Silos at Yelarbon on the national silo art trail.”

Goondiwindi Regional Council is rolling out a new tourism campaign to take advantage of the domestic Queensland tourism “boom’’ - which perhaps ironically is thanks to COVID-19.

“Council’s campaign will complement the Queensland Government’s new tourism campaign, ‘Queensland, you’re Good to Go!’, and the Goondiwindi Chamber of Commerce’s campaign ‘Come Say Hi’, which encourages locals to invite their friends and families to come out during the school holidays and enjoy the many attractions and local shopping our region has to offer.”

Cr Springborg said he is “also asking residents and businesses to support the campaign by inviting friends and family to the region for their next road trip or reunion”.

“We know from the data that a large

part of our region’s visitor economy isn’t just your average tourist, it’s the friends and family of locals who come to the region to visit,” Cr Springborg said.

“Going forward, we can all support our tourism operators and related businesses by inviting friends and family to the region for their next getaway.

“Our tourism operators and related businesses have really taken the brunt of the impact in the last few months, and the new campaign is targeted to support those businesses and get our visitor economy back on its feet and ready to thrive.” ● freetimes.com.au

COUNCILLORS DIVIDED ON DAM

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Divisions have emerged within the ranks of Southern Downs councillors over the proposed Emu Swamp Dam near Stanthorpe.

Tenders for the construction of the dam are expected to be issued by the project’s commercial entity - Granite Belt Water Pty Ltd - by the end of July or in early August.

The Federal Government has committed $47 million to the dam, the Queensland Government $13 million and Granite Belt producers $23.4 million.

The forecast completion of the project is 2023, with the State’s funding dependent on Granite Belt Water demonstrating the dam can be built ‘within budget’, and the tender process is likely to be key to that.

The 51 local producers involved are nearing the deadline to fully commit to buying water from the dam, forecast to cost $6000 per megalitre for an upfront allocation acquisition, and $408 per megalitre annually for operation and maintenance of the dam and the associated pipeline infrastructure to deliver water to farms across the Granite Belt.

Granite Belt Water says the project is not dependent on the Southern Downs Regional Council becoming a formal ‘partner’, but the council will have a role to play either way in assessing aspects such as road upgrades and development approvals.

The bigger question for the council centres on a proposal by Granite Belt Water

to acquire unused council water allocations currently attached to Stanthorpe’s existing Storm King Dam and transferring them to Emu Swamp Dam, otherwise known as the ‘Granite Belt Irrigation Project’ (GBIP).

Those allocations could be in exchange for the council receiving an overall larger allocation from Emu Swamp Dam for emergency town water supply for Stanthorpe, but the State Government has ultimate control over town water allocations in Queensland.

A key point is that Emu Swamp Dam would have a ‘useable’ capacity of 11,727ML as compared to Storm King Dam’s 1980ML. Discussion of the dam by the council is timely, taking place while the Queensland Government continues to fund water carting from Connolly Dam in Warwick to Stanthorpe for town water use at a monthly cost of $800,000.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has committed to funding drinking water for Stanthorpe until the end of 2020 but if insufficient rainfall is received by then the state government is expected to continue to meet that cost ongoing, as per the Premier’s commitment in late 2019 that she will “not allow” Stanthorpe to run out of town water.

CLOSE VOTE ...

Negotiations between Granite Belt Water and the council came to something of a head at a special council meeting on Tuesday of last week when councillors took a vote on whether or not to give “in principle” support to council involvement

in Emu Swamp Dam. Mayor Vic Pennisi has so far declared a potential ‘conflict of interest’ on Emu Swamp Dam and has refrained from taking part in debate on the issue, with a complaint against him currently under investigation.

Details of the complaint and the complainant have not been made public but it is understood to relate to his former role as ex-chair of the Stanthorpe Community Reference Panel and as a former director of Granite Belt Water Pty Ltd. With Cr Pennisi out of the room last Tuesday 30 June Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley took the chair, with councillors debating a detailed and complex resolution on Emu Swamp Dam. The resolution was for the council to provide “in principle” support for the dam, but subject to clarification and further negotiation with both Granite Belt Water and the State Government primarily on the water allocation issue.

Voting in favour of “in principle” support for Emu Swamp Dam were Cr Bartley and Councillors Andrew Gale, Cynthia McDonald and Stephen Tancred, and against, Councillors Cameron Gow, Marco Gliori, Sheryl Windle and Jo McNally.

With the vote locked at four-all Cr Bartley then used his casting vote from the meeting chair and the resolution was carried. The net effect of the resolution is that the council as an organisation is still seeking further information about Emu Swamp Dam before making a final decision

Acknowledges and commends the work undertaken to date by the Granite Belt Irrigation Project to bring the Emu Swamp Dam project to the current phase, and notes the significant benefit the project will bring to the region; and 2. It remains unclear what the impact on ratepayers across the region could be if the council becomes a ‘formal’ partner but Granite Belt Water has said the cost of road upgrades would be met by the Federal and State funding.

Granite Belt Water has also committed to covering the cost of council staff time in assessing aspects of the dam project relevant to council such as roads requirements and land use approvals.

Cr Gow - who is a Stanthorpe area councillor - this week told the Free Times he supports Emu Swamp Dam “in principle” but could not vote “yes” last week as he “needs further assurances and detail” about how Stanthorpe’s long-term town water needs will be secured.

Cr Gow said there was insufficient detail available at this time to allow him to vote in favour even of “in principle” support.

He said he and Crs Gliori, Windle and McNally took the view that the council needs greater clarity about the water allocations and the project as a whole.

Cr Gow said he has been contacted by “many” Stanthorpe residents with concerns about the future of town water for Stanthorpe and believes his position reflects that community concern.

The Gow family are involved in tomato and capsicum production but are not among the 51 producers who have committed funding - also “in principle” at this stage - to the dam. ● term (10-15 year) lease of the State’s unallocated water for future urban supply to enable the project to aggregate sufficient entitlements for the project to commence and deliver the economic benefits to the Southern Downs, Granite Belt and Stanthorpe area such as 700 new full time jobs, a $65 million increase in gross farm production, and improved urban water security for Stanthorpe.

Provides in-principle agreement to the request from Granite Belt Irrigation Project, conditional on the following parameters being fully resolved and reported back to Council for a final resolution: a. Clarification, to the satisfaction of Council, on the operating conditions of Emu Swamp Dam to ensure Southern Downs Regional Council can access town water supply when and as needed, and clear prioritisation of town water in the operations; and c. ‘BLACK SPOT’ SUBMISSION Eighteen of the region’s identified traffic ‘black spots’ will be submitted for Federal Government funding by the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Councillors at their June monthly meeting voted on the list, which a spokeswoman said “includes more than $1m of proposed safety upgrades and improvements to dangerous roads and intersections to reduce road fatalities”.

Mayor Vic Pennisi said the council would submit the list of “projects of the region’s most notorious black spots as part of its commitment to improve road safety on the Southern Downs”.

“While road safety is everyone’s responsibility, Council is committed to building better, safer roads across our region for all road users, whether they are locals or visitors who travel here to enjoy everything that our unique locality has to offer,” Cr Pennisi said.

“By identifying known sites of concern and fixing these through Government support, we hope to reduce serious injury and help ensure everyone on our roads reaches their destination safely.

“Upgrades of these identified road sites on the Southern Downs create jobs for locals through construction and industry contracts, and Council is all about the means to support our community and regional economy.

“On the back of drought, bushfire and COVID-19, there has never been a more important time to seek available Government funding that will fuel our region to be viable, sustainable and safe for everyone who travels on our roads.

“We are on the road to building a better map for locals and visitors to our region.”

The council spokeswoman said under its funding criteria, the Federal Government “classifies black spots as either reactive or proactive - reactive sites are roads or intersections which have a crash history and proactive sites are ones considered potentially hazardous”.

“Council has submitted potential projects in both categories,” the spokeswoman said.

“Black spot projects which meet the funding criteria include safety works such as improving sight distances, improving curves, removing road side hazards, increasing safety at intersections and providing protection to pedestrians.

“Council’s list of projects will need to be submitted and approved by the Federal Government before any works can commence.

“The Federal Government Black Spot Program is funded through the Department of Transport and Main Roads.”

FATAL ACCIDENT Police were this week investigating a fatal accident at Pikes Creek on the Granite Belt last Sunday night.

A Police Media statement said at around 7.50pm last Sunday police and emergency services were notified in relation to a man located unresponsive on Waghorn Road.

Police said preliminary inquiries indicated the man, aged 63, had fallen from a quadbike.

His name had not been released at time of printing of the Free Times this week. ●

COVID-19 AND PROVISION OF WATER AND WASTEWATER SERVICES...

WATER RELEASE FROM LESLIE DAM BY SUNWATER... · Water allocation above 14,960 ML dam volume (14.08%) is managed by Sunwater in accordance with the user agreements between Sunwater and licence holders.

Sunwater controls how and when this water is released. · All releases for irrigation cease once the dam volume reaches 14,960 ML. The remaining supply is reserved exclusively for town water supply for Southern Downs Regional Council.

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues, Southern Downs Regional Council is focused on ensuring business as usual continuity for water and wastewater services across the region. Residents can rest assured that provision of drinking water and sanitation services will continue as normal.

This level has not changed over the past fortnight. · Water remains in Storm King Dam as a contingency for emergency events and to provide a habitat for aquatic life. Based on current usage, Storm King Dam would reach its minimum operating level in 3 months if water for Stanthorpe was being sourced from the dam.

Warwick · Leslie - current level and volume 13.04% and 13,855 ML. This level has decreased by 149 ML over the past fortnight. · Connolly - current level and volume 85.8% and 1859 ML. This level has not changed over the past fortnight. · Based on the latest data and current targeted usage (120 l/p/d), Leslie Dam will take approximately 29 months to reach its minimum operating level. Connolly Dam will be able to supply water for 23 months based on current water usage. This includes the supply of water to Stanthorpe and will be dependent on water quality.

WATER RESTRICTIONS...

In light of current circumstances and to give residents confidence that they have access to sufficient quantities of water to protect themselves against COVID-19 through good hygiene practices, Council further relaxed water restrictions to 120 litres per person per day as of 18 March 2020. · Extreme level water restrictions will be enforced by Council through the Southern Downs Region, including the township of Jennings in NSW. · The target for residential properties is 120 litres/person/day (l/p/d)

· Council will continue to assist residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption. · Drinking water supplied by Southern Downs Regional Council is only available for use by Southern Downs Regional Council residents. · Whilst some rainfall has been received in parts of the region, water restrictions remain in place. The State Government is also paying the cartage costs of $800,000 per month ongoing until February 2021. · It is important that the water continues to be conserved and that the community remains vigilant in their water use to ensure the minimal amount of water is carted and the transportation costs are kept down. · Contingency arrangements are in place for water carting to minimise any risk to Stanthorpe water supply from unforeseen events such as road closures due to bushfire, road accidents or to manage weather driven water quality changes. · Water carting to Stanthorpe will continue until a sufficient water level in Storm King Dam is restored.

CHECK YOUR INCOME DETAILS: ATO The Australian Taxation Office is urging people to make sure their income details are complete and finalised before seeing their chosen tax agent.

For most Australians, income statements have replaced payment summaries. This means that instead of receiving a payment summary from their employer, most people’s income statements will be finalised electronically, and the information provided directly to the ATO. You can view your income statement

through myGov and the information from it is automatically included in your return in myTax by the ATO. If you use a tax agent, they will also have access to this information.

Income statements show their year-todate salary and wages, PAYG withholding tax, and any employer super contributions in near real-time, but it is important to wait until it is finalised before lodging a tax return. Employers have until July 31 to finalise income statements.

“We often see people too eager to get a tax refund making obvious mistakes, which can either delay processing the tax return or result in a bill later on,” ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat said.

“It’s important to check that your employer has finalised the information in your income statement and it is marked as ‘tax ready’ before you lodge.

“Other information from banks, health funds and government agencies will also be automatically inserted into your tax return.

For most people this will happen by the end of July.

“Lodging once we have included all of your information in your tax return makes it even easier, but if you are lodging before then, make sure the information provided is complete, accurate, and up to date to avoid delays or a debt later on,” Ms Foat said. ●

Dad and the Lad - Ralph and Jim bring something special to what could have been just another reality competition.

A BUDDING CONTEST THE BIG FLOWER FIGHT, NETFLIX There is something slightly magical about Netflix latest competitive television program The Big Flower Fight.

Sure you could say that it’s just the latest Great British Bake-Off wannabe and even ask if we really need a show where a whole heap of creatives compete against each other, but mainly against themselves, to produce sculptures and displays made from plants, flowers and produce.

But after binge-watching the entire eightpart series, I can safely say - yes we do need it. In this current dark uncertain world there is a place for whimsy, creation, colour, heart and fun.

Part of the magic of this show is in the casting of the 10 teams - seemingly from around the world but mostly London and Brooklyn with a couple of Irish and European outliers. Though we didn’t see them all in the first episode (nor all of the creations) we slowly but surely get to know them all.

And two stand out right from the beginning - event florists and best friends Henck and Yan (a Dutchman and a Dane) who were colourful (to say the least) and happy just to create and test their creativity and the Dad and the Lad - groundskeeper Ralph and his design student son Jim - who brought real heart and soul to what could have just been another “competition” reality program.

The Big Flower fight - hosted by UK

TV perennial host Vic Reeves and comedic actress Natasia Demetriou - probably started life in a brainstorming session in a TV executive suite somewhere as a “what can we do to recreate Bake Off ”.

But what was produced with It’s dresses made of flowers and giant grass-clad animals, Yan’s crazy sailor suit Ralph and Jim making a physical sculpture of Jim’s anxiety - well no-one could really have put down on paper or expected.

This is a colourful whirlwind of whimsy that will unexpectedly make you tear up at a giant animal sculpture or a dandelion mobile.

And it’s nice that something that could have been formulaic took on a life of its own.

The Last Days of American Crime is a shallow and overwhelmingly tedious thriller.

Days before a government-broadcast signal is set to suppress all crime in America, three career criminals plan a legendary heist.

The Last Days of American Crime has blunt, hokey dialogue, bland characters and disjointed editing. The plot is a series of violent vignettes and obvious twists connected by a vague plan, unintentionally funny melodrama and poorly-acted stretches of emptiness. Édgar Ramírez, as gangster protagonist Graham Bricke, is a staggeringly wooden lead. Michael Pitt provides some amusement as an ambitious, foul-mouthed crime family heir, but he overstays his welcome and becomes obnoxious.

The film makes almost no effort to explain its near-future setting or how its API crime-negating signal works. The premise is ripe for commentary on how people in authority decide what is legal, but the film skips over this theme in favour of hollow brutality.

The climax has a grimly-engaging sequence in which a main character overcomes the API signal through concentrated nihilism, but it’s not worth slogging through two miserable hours to get to it. Moreover, another character beats the signal through a pill, which dilutes the first character’s macabre mental triumph.

Sleaze can be fun, but this is sleaze with no relatable characters, subtlety or cohesion.

The Last Days of American Crime is a tedious, inept, wretched experience, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

Now, decades later, damaging energy pulses on earth have been traced to McBride senior’s ship out near Neptune. Is it incidental ... or something more sinister?

McBride junior is tasked with venturing out of his comfort zone to seek answers and to ‘fix’ the problem.

The control freaks at Space Command already deeply suspicious of the father - keep a tight leash on the son, while they can.

However when he is contracted by struggling attorney Elias Birchard “E.B.“ Jonathan (John Lithgow) to investigate a horrific and sensational child kidnapping.

His life and that of his friends and even his city is changed forever in this gritty mini-series based on the Perry Mason stories by Erle Stanley Gardner.

This is not Perry Mason of the beloved ‘60s television show. This is a mini-series clearly made for a 2020s pay-TV audience, dark, gritty, pulling no punches and not freetimes.com.au

Matthew Rhys (right) is Perry Mason - a struggling PI in ‘30s LA. shying away from nudity, sex scenes or gruesome death.

The first episode goes to great-length to show the desperation that Mason, still living on what’s left of his family’s dairy now part an airfield.

Rhys, who stepped in when original star Robert Downey Jr had scheduling issues, is perfect as the unmade-bed of a man, broken, living on the edge, investigating the infidelities of movie-stars

and pushing things past breaking point and he is helped by dark lighting and a palette barely above sepia at times.

Pacing is slowish as each character and scenario is introduced - slowly building to a shocking although probably not overly unexpected ending which leaves you with enough questions to hook you in and keep watching.

LAKESIDE VIEWS The beautiful lake-side Hidden Creek Winery Cafe and Vineyard is back open - but as popular as ever despite the restrictions.

Owner Leanne Williams urged diners looking to come and enjoy the atmosphere and the food at the stunning winery location to book in advance and not leave it to the last minute.

“We had had to close 23rd of March and we reopened the 16th of May,” Leanne explained.

“So two months we were closed. It was a bit slow to start from the 16th of May, probably the two or three weeks after that were pretty slow because the borders were still closed and there was a limit of 150km that people could travel. Because the majority of our market is Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane we didn’t get much visitation through those weeks. But once Queenslanders could travel anywhere in Queensland, we’ve just been smashed.”

Under the current rules they can only have 26 people inside although they do have tables outside and as long as the weather is good they can put any over flow outside, around the lake and under the trees. But the venue is proving popular and booking is essential.

The Hidden Creek Winery Cafe is the only winery cafe in the region with a lakeside location according to Leanne and it’s this that makes it special and adds to the ambience.

“We make all our own gluten free sweets

“We have a very small but very tasty menu, everything is home made. We do gourmet platters, curry, soups, homemade pasta, Thai chicken skewers, organic lamb Rogan Josh, bangers and mash. We are doing a really nice pork sausage at the moment with an apple and celeriac mash.

“We are going to have a very interesting selection of what we call our Strange Bird Wines - alternative varieties Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French - coming out very shortly as well.”

The “magic” sound of talking, laughter and people relaxing has returned to Warwick Gardens Galore now that the lockdown has been relaxed.

Not that the beautiful cafe and garden centre in Albion Street Warwick has been closed during the pandemic - it has been business as usual - mostly. Of course with social distancing rules they had to rethink how their cafe operated completely to takeaway at the height of the lockdown.

Now as things relax, things are returning to normal and they are allowed 50 guests while still continuing to offer the now popular take-away service according to owner Sue Hoffman said.

“It was absolutely amazing on the weekend because we had our 50 (people) all the time and you to hear the laughter, to hear the people just sitting and eating,” Sue said.

“It was just amazing as an owner.

And we thought - oh my goodness it’s starting to return back to normality. It’s just amazing to hear all that taking place.

Just to hear people sitting together and the noise of people talking and laughter and having a good time. We have missed that sound.”

And it’s the perfect place to relax dining among the plants and enjoy a truly unique atmosphere in Warwick - a place where Sue said you could close your eyes and just be anywhere and not

in the centre of town.

A place where there is plenty to keep the kids occupied - all within the safe confines of the centre and you can grab plants for the garden, flowers for the house, gifts for friends and food for the soul. With all the staff working together to make sure that you get what you need - even during lockdown.

“We all dug down deep as a mass team working together,” Sue said.

“It started off we converted all our menus to takeaway and then we did takeaway and ten, takeaway and twenty and now we are takeaway and 50 people.

We’ve just pushed on and worked really hard and kept it open so people that could come out to get what they needed.

We tried to keep that service going continuously throughout Covid as well.”

Warwick Gardens Galore offer a wide selection of coffees, drinks and food with a large selection of specials each week as well.

“We have amazing fresh-cooked cakes and biscuits, slices and cheesecakes and all sorts as well. Then we have our wholesome food menu, which is breakfast right through to lunch,” Sue said.

“It has such a different atmosphere to everywhere else, it has it’s own feeling and charisma. They are open every day 7am to 5.30pm at the garden centre with the cafe serving both breakfast and lunch.

An international leader in the field of cattle reproduction technology will have his work showcased in the coming weeks on the ABC’s popular rural news program Landline.

Ced Wise, wife Rowena and son Adam are the team behind Ced Wise Artificial Breeding Services based at their ‘Glenisa’ property at Glen Aplin near Stanthorpe.

Ced travels extensively throughout Australia and the Pacific and further afield, including Indonesia, working with cattle producers in both the domestic and export industries.

Key focus areas of service provision and research include semen and embryo collection and embryo transfer.

Ced graduated as a veterinarian (BVSc.) from the University of Queensland in 1976.

He spent the first three years following graduation in a mixed practice in Warwick.

Following this, Ced moved to the United States and spent four years doing post graduate work in Food Animal Medicine, Embryo Transfer and Semen Collection at Colorado University, where he received a Master of Sciences (MSc.) and sat the board exams to gain a Diploma from the American College of Theriogenology (Dip. ACT.).

On returning to Australia, Ced also sat the College exams to become a Member of the Australian College of Veterinary Science in Reproduction (MACVSc.).

THE FINDING OF ‘BEAUTIFUL BETSY’

BY JOHN TELFER From time to time many stories of World War 2 missing aircraft came to light but none more mysterious than that of the missing B-24D Liberator bomber of the 380th Bomber group of the United States Army Air Force, based in Darwin in 1945.

Other missing aircraft were found in the jungles of New Guinea and the South Pacific, such as the B17E Liberator on its first mission, called the “Swamp Ghost” which was found in the Agaiambo swamp in 1965, a C47 Dakota aircraft known as the “Swamp Rat” found in 1989 and copiloted by Flying Officer Francis Milne of the RAAF, and the RAAF Beaufort Bomber carrying former Scots College student Byron Maclean, shot down in 1943, and found 57 years later.

However, the story of “Beautiful Betsy” has an aura of mystery, and here is why.

The “Beautiful Betsy” was classified as a “Work Horse” of the unit that had been retired from combat duties after 25 missions and around 1,300 flying hours, after its first combat mission over the enemy-held Timor Island in June 1943. The plane had been stripped of its armaments and officially pensioned off to be used for transport duties for personnel going on leave to the cities, and for carrying catering provisions that enabled the unit an escape from the monotonous diet in Darwin. The name “Beautiful Betsy” was given to the aircraft by its original pilot who named it after his wife Betsy Roth.

On February 26th 1945, the Liberator was scheduled to fly the estimated nine hours flight and over 3,000 kilometres, to Eagle Farm airport in Brisbane. The plane was captained by Lieutenant William McDaniel with co-pilot Lieutenant Eugene Kilcheski, plus a crew of 4. They departed from Darwin at 10 pm. Two Royal Air Force pilots, Flight Lieutenant Cook and Flying Officer Cannon, were the only passengers apart from the crew, as Cannon was to be married to a girl in Brisbane with Cook his best man, and were hitching a ride to Brisbane. Sadly, the aircraft took off and was never heard or seen again, and thus created a mystery as to its fate.

Lieutenant William Emmett McDaniel, USAAF. when it failed to arrive at Brisbane in the early hours of the next day. Reports differed as to where the plane was when it was heard flying over Claraville Station, near Croydon, Queensland, at about 3 am, and so a search of the area began for the lost aircraft. Major H. C. Williams of the USAAF was put in charge of a search party to follow the route taken to Brisbane the following day, with orders for two Liberator aircraft to follow the route taken by ‘Betsy’ and flying 25 - 30 metres apart, looking for any debris, as they now realised that there was little hope of finding survivors.

Despite the intense search operations over a broad expanse of the aircraft’s flight path and radio and media appeals, no trace could be found of the missing Liberator.

There were conflicting reports that it had been heard flying over Cowan Downs, 25 kilometres south of Donora Hill, but this was discounted later after investigation.

In 1967, hopes of locating the missing “Beautiful Betsy” rose when parts of a missing Liberator were found at Elsey Station in the Roper River area, south-east of Darwin.

At this point hopes were high that the missing plane had been found at last and a new search party was formed under the command of Group Captain Keith Rundle, a retired RAAF officer, assisted by another retired RAAF officer in Wing Commander Ed Plenty of Darwin. However, after visiting the site and talking to Aboriginal stockmen, they concluded that the scattered parts of American servicemen’s equipment found in a dried waterhole were possibly ditched there by a passing American plane and that it was possible that U.S. ground troops had once been camped in the area.

Other leads were followed up after three Aborigines reported in 1982 that they had seen the missing aircraft and had sighted

human remains at the site, but after another investigation, the search was abandoned and the mystery remained that perhaps Betsy had drifted off course and had crashed somewhere in the sea. The disappearance of “Beautiful Betsy” seemed to become one of those wartime mysteries that were never solved until much later. However, after remaining a mystery for 49 years, the missing aircraft was found at last in thick bushland on 2nd August, 1994.

Mark Roe was carrying out a backburning operation in the Kroombit Tops National Park, about 80 kilometres from Gladstone in Central Queensland, when, from a high point, he saw a glint of silver and went to investigate. He came upon the wreck of the missing Betsy. He was the first person to lay eyes on the Liberator since 1945. He walked through the scattered remains which were spread over a wide area of the forest.

Reporting his find to authorities, a special recovery team from the United States Army found the skeletal remains of the crewmen and the two RAF officers.

The only identifiable parts of the aircraft were the wings and tail section. They found Identity tags and personal effects while scouring through the wreckage and so the U.S. crew were buried in the American War Cemetery in Manilla, Philippines, and the two 548 Squadron RAF officers were buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, America. The crash site has a monument placed there now but is only accessible to hikers and bush walkers in the National Park.

There had been many aircraft crashes in Australia during the war years of 1940 - 1945, but the most tragic was that of the United States B-17C Liberator that crashed near Baker’s Creek, Mackay, two years earlier than “Beautiful Betsy’s” last flight, with the loss of 40 American servicemen.

So, the loss of life for many soldiers, sailors and airmen was not just confined to combat.

Although we revere our Anzacs and the sacrifice’s they made in their heroic defence of Australia in World War 2, we should never forget the members of our allied forces that also gave their lives, hundreds of kilometres away from their families and friends. ● LEST WE FORGET.

A LETTER FROM BOMBALA...

Where I am at the moment - Bombala NSW - it is extremely cold, the damage from the bushfires all too apparent, and the effect of the prolonged drought very evident. Severe water restrictions are still in place as they are at home, but it is so cold there is very little activity in the garden anyway. Some daffodils and other hardy bulbs are starting to poke their heads through and provide some hope of recovery in the coming months.

It is really a very depressing scenario for those that live here and trying to recover from the devastation is very taxing emotionally and physically.

I am only here helping out and am finding it very difficult to cope with. The bush is very quiet with many birds and animals destroyed or gone ahead of the fires and as yet have not returned.

I once again realise the importance to my mental and physical well being of the ability to be able to garden and see green things growing. Because of the cold climate, even our lovely native trees are being slow to respond and show the green fluff of young leaves that are the typical recovery picture further north in warmer areas.

Some platypus are returning to the river, having had the water so polluted from all the ash that was washed in by the rain, that they were also collateral damage from the fires. As we move about re fencing areas,

Fortunately I can still here the warbling of magpies early in the morning and see flocks of yellow tailed black cockatoos flying over each afternoon as they return from feeding in the pine forest areas near here.

I have also seen, here at the house, some beautiful blue and red crimson rosella or mountain lawrie as I knew them as a child.

Growing up we had one in a large cage that used to mimic my mum calling me home from playing with the neighbourhood children. “Joey” was such a good mimic I

often mistakenly came home to his call!

With the devastation surrounding me this week I have found it difficult to get inspired to write the column! Thankfully “Mr. Google” has come to the rescue and I hope some of the following provides some interest for readers.

I found a list of common mistakes both experienced and novice gardeners sometimes make. One that I found that I think makes sense, was to not add anything to the hole you’ve dug when planting a new shrub or tree. Apparently the new thought is to only backfill with the existing soil and not add fertiliser, compost or potting mix as this will not encourage the roots to penetrate into the surrounding soil and may be inclined to keep the plant root bound as much as being in a pot. The thought was and I quote “ultimately, your plant has to grow in the native soil, so don’t baby it and turn it into a weakling”!

Some of the other thoughts were to be patient and not to aggressive when it comes to pruning, make sure you have selected a plant right for your area and position, full sun means at least 6 hours, partial sun half that and shade loving only a minor amount of morning or filtered sunlight.

Also was the need to plant things to attract pollinators and beneficial insects whether in the vegetable or flower garden, and further, to not plant things to close together. Like

us, plants need their space to thrive! As to the need for mulch it can’t be overestimated but be sure to make it more of a doughnut shape to hold water and keep the mulch away from the stem to prevent rot. Too often we see “volcano” shaped heaps of mulch around the base of trees and shrubs.

A list of plants that every garden should have was also interesting. Roses were at the top of the list and I had just decided that when I get home I need to get over my fear of growing them and had thought I would get a climber to plant over the old gate I have as a feature in my front garden.

I have not decided on just which one yet but a thornless yellow banksia rose has always been a sentimental favourite as it grew in profusion over the verandah of my grandparents’ house. The need for perfume in a garden is also a consideration, so much thought and research will have to go into the final selection.

Herbs were another suggestion and reminded me of one of the most amazing displays I saw in Queens Park in Toowoomba - a whole bed of bright orange calendulas and curly leafed parsley planted in a chevron pattern - spectacular! While we don’t all have the space to replicate this, the dark green of parsley is a great foil to highlight other colours in our plantings and can be used to great effect in our flower gardens. ●

STILL PLENTY OF FOOTY SURPRISES The NRL and AFL caravan shows roll on.

Who would have thought that Queensland would become AFL central in any year under any circumstances. - (you just can never say never). It has taken a while but suddenly we have the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns firing and giving us here in Queensland something more than the Qld Storm to celebrate.

It is testament to the patience shown in Boardrooms; hard work and diligence put into creating a strong playing roster and excellent coaching that both the Lions and Suns are enjoying success.

I may be barking up the wrong tree but there are a few things there that a couple of Queensland NRL teams are probably wishing they had explored a little further.

While many Queenslanders are mourning the Broncos situation and the failure of the Titans and Cowboys to flatter you cannot escape the fact that we have witnessed some extraordinary football recently.

I doubt I have ever seen a more enthralling club game than the Storm Roosters clash last round. If you are a league enthusiast and that game did not get your blood pumping, I am gravely concerned for your well being.

Then there are the Panthers and Eels who after promising so much for so many seasons finally look to be delivering the goods.

The NRL rule changes have delivered us the fast and entertaining game we have been craving for several years. There have been a couple of controversial refereeing decisions but on the whole the sky hasn’t fallen in and the refs have in the main stepped up to the plate.

I can honestly say I wasn’t a big fan of the Captain’s challenge when it was mooted but captain’s appear to be giving thoughtful consideration to their challenges and some have shown a real talent for being Johnny on the Spot and getting their side out of a tricky situation that was not going their way with excellent challenges.

Now if we can just get the NRL judiciary sorted the game will be in a much better place. I am appalled that Addin Fonua-Blake’s comments to the referee Grant Atkins in the Manly Newcastle game earned him what amounted to a slap on the wrist. His tirade was disparaging and disgusting and sets such an appalling example to out junior players. Congratulations, Ben Ikin for calling this out for what it is.

Then there was perennial bad boy Wests Tigers centre Joey Leilua who should find himself warning a seat on the sideline for a an even lengthier stint than four weeks after the shot he put on Dylan Edwards. Get it out of your game Leilua it’s not necessary.

Then topping it all off, we have the Penrith coach reacting childishly to a bit of stick from rival fans. Can’t see Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bennett, Trent Robinson, Ricky Stuart or embattled Anthony Seibold to name just a few reacting by blowing kisses. Coaches are expected to be even more professional than their players. It’s the NRL not the school yard though sometimes I wonder.

(Note no mention of the Brisbane Broncos - the woes of the club, team and coach - I simply have no words).

ANOTHER CHARACTER LOST Some of the older brigade of ex football players and supporters will be sadden to learn of the death last week of former Stanthorpe player Harry Theo.

Harry was the brother of Billy Theo owner of the legendary Regal Cafe in Stanthorpe and was more than a hand rugby League player. He was a member of the

1964 St George Cup winning Stanthorpe side (pictured)coached by Bob Cook.

I can vividly recall as a young bloke watching a Houghton Cup final at the Warwick Showground where Harry starred.

Cars around the oval had their head lights on as the winter afternoon closed in and in a thrilling finish Harry plucked the ball out of the air running the length of the field to

score a pretty spectacular intercept try and win Stanthorpe the game.

Harry was well known and liked across the region during his playing days and beyond. He left the district and moved to Deepwater where he ran a Cafe to rival the Regal (well almost). He was well respected and always up for a yarn and a laugh in those days if anyone from Stanthorpe or Warwick stopped in Deepwater.

Harry who was buried on Tuesday in the Tweed Valley is survived by a son and two daughters and will be fondly remembered by many of my vintage or a little older.

BONNIE LASSIES STEP OUT IN TARTAN It has been a busy time for the Warwick Ladies in recent weeks. Last Wednesday 14 teams celebrated National Tartan Day. Some lassies were right into the swing of all things Scottish, kitted out in their tartan..

Unfortunately there were no bagpipes to accompany play, nor haggis to sample post play on a day where W Carey and Sons Quality Meats were the generous sponsors.

As players made their way back to the clubhouse 42 points looked to be the target right up until the arrival of the last group.

Melanie McLennan and Yvonne Pinington returned a great team score of 43 points to snatch a win. Trish Bell and Anne Lyons (42 points) survived a countback from Gwen Porter and Di MacDonald (42 points). In lieu of Balls what could be more appropriate for Tartan Day than “shortbread”. So please collect your shortbread from the proshop asap, or you might find the keepers of the Pro Shop have eaten your spoils.

Despite the cold and windy conditions last Saturday 19 very keen ladies did battle for the July Monthly Medal. Danielle Seibel continued her fine form. Her score of nett 74 good enough to win Division One. She also had the magic putter in Division One with only 27 putts. Runner up, Tub Ingall (76), has returned to form and finds herself back in Division one.

Annice Payne returned 74nett to claim victory in Division Two just ahead of the inform Anne Lyons (75 nett) who also won the Division Two putting. Rundown balls went to Gwen Mills and Mark Adcock. The Covid rundown balls (in lieu of pins) went the way of Sharron Cooper, Mary Young, Jill Barnes and Di Evans.

This week the Ladies play a Single stroke for a trophy generously sponsored by KFC and would like to thank the local KFC for their support during this hard time.

The qualifying round of the Presidents Foursomes will be played on Saturday. This is a handicap event, so grab a partner, shake hands on the first tee, and go out and have fun. THE SPIN CATCHING UP ON LADIES RESULTS Here is a quick round up of the ladies golf results from the previous week.

A well balanced field in each division hit the course on Wednesday 24/6 in the Midweek Medal. It was a running double for the winner of Division One Nachcha Craggs with 72 in her keeping.. Melanie McLennan (74 nett)was the runner up.

Putting honours went to Mary Young with 29 putts.

The Division Two winner was Tub Ingall with 71 nett. Ingall, with 27 putts also won the putting in her division. Runner up in division two was Di Johnson with 74 nett.

The rundown balls went to Helen Olsen, Jill Barnes, Di Evans, and Michelle Wright.

Marg Adcock, Patricia Eastwell, Anna Cox, and Janine Stewart all collected the extra balls in lieu of pins.

Congratulations to Janet Davis. Her score of 38 points won her the Oaktree Retirement Village Single Stableford event..

Marg Adcock was runner up with 36. (two balls due to field size). Trish Roberts and Helen Olsen won the balls in the rundown, and the Covid four went to Annice Payne, Kath Devereux, Mary Young and Patricia Eastwell.

Saturday was also the semi finals of the 4BBB Handicap Matchplay Championships.

Danielle Seibel and Molly Scotney defeated Anne Lyons and Trish Bell 2/1. Melanie McLennan and Jill Barnes defeated Di Macdonald and Yvonne Pinington two up.

In the final played on Sunday the Mother /Daugther duo of Danielle and Molly took line honours ahead of Jill and Melanie on the 18th Hole.

It was a super match, and very worthy of final status. Congratulations to both teams for such high standard golf. Excellent teamwork got everyone to the finals.

JURRIS CLEANS UP Regular Stanthorpe Sporters’ golfer, Ivan Jurris was in great form last Sunday in the regular Sporters game.. Jurris cleaned up. He claimed a win over runner up El Presidente, Ray Thorn and also returned the Best Gross score of the morning. Dick Hilton and Aaron Simmers both figured in the run downs.

The Sporters’ crew will be out on the Stanthorpe course next Sunday with tee off at the usual time of 7.30-8.00am and reminder newcomers to the game and visitors to the district that they are most welcome.

SUMMIT EMERGING FROM COVID SLUMBER The Summit Bowls Club is finally emerging from their COVID enforced slumber. The following playing programme has been drawn up complying with the current COVID-19 guidelines.

Determined to get back on the green at the first opportunity, 12 dedicated and slightly crazy bowlers braved the cold conditions and bitter wind on Saturday for their first taste of bowls for several months.

A reduced field of 56 players (down ion recent numbers) teed off in on Saturday in Warwick playing for the John Dee Monthly Medal.

A countback was required to decide the winner of the “A” division. Caleb King prevailed in the countback after he and Mal Galloway recorded scores of 65 nett.. King and Galloway have been on the leader board in recent weeks and they continue to play well.

ON THE MOVE OR INJURED AND OUT The Warwick Golf Club has bid farewell to one of the club’s popular regular players, Dave Craggs. Dave and Nasha are heading to Far North Queensland obviously in search of among other things greener and warmer golf courses. The club wishes the pair all the best in that venture. They will be missed around the course.

Another couple of regulars that will be missing in the coming months are old mates Gordon McKeen and Billy McKillop. Each has recently suffered injuries which will keep them out of the game.. The club wishes both a speedy recovery and hope to see the popular figures making a comeback in the future. All are going to be sorely missed.

SOUTHERN CROSS BACK IN THE SWING 20 bowlers from the Southern Cross Bowls club paid little or no attention to the icy conditions last Saturday keen to get back on the green at the Southern Cross Bowls Club, Warwick, for some long awaited “proper” games.

As Bowls Queensland lifted restrictions and issued their Qld Health approved “return to play guidelines, it took “Paintbrush” Davidson swung into action and in no time at all quickly organised teams for some competition In spite of the cold and windy conditions, it was a great day. There was plenty of action on the green and even more banter between the bowlers.

The overall winners were the deadly combination of Daphne Cross and Joe Torrisi. Last Thursday’s practice session obviously paying dividends for the pair as they were an unbeatable combination on Saturday. The runners up were Thea Francis and Pat Gainey. All won meal vouchers generously donated by The Criterion Hotel.

Other bowlers who took the opportunity for a roll up last Thursday were Allan Davidson, Barry Heffernan, Cheryl Wickham and Barry Frame, all keen to also sharpen their skills after their break from the game.

Club Games Director, Clark Davidson is keen to see the Monthly Turkey Triples return as soon as possible. Keep an eye out in this column for a date in August to be released shortly.

BEATING THE CHILL AND THE SCORECARD A big field stepped out in typical Stanthorpe winter weather last Saturday to play for the July Monthly Medal which was sponsored by club member Michael O’Brien. The competition was again held in conjunction with the Dale Mullins trophy, sponsored once again by. Michael Thompson.

An early tee off proved to be an advantage for the early birds as the breeze picked up and freshened throughout the day. Three of the four major prize winners were a.m. starters.

There were some very cold bodies congregating were seen around the clubhouse wood heater late in the day of course all the time keeping to the social distancing requirements Junior golfer, Leighton Thurston, a new recruit, has been noticed out on the course practising, often under the encouragement of Brady Morant.

Leighton’s practice paid dividends last Saturday when he returned a nett score of 71; the best for the day and the winning score. Congratulations young man and a fine start to lowering your handicap.

Trevor Wren (nett 74) survived a countback with Mick O’Brien to secure the runner up prize. Mick settling for a run down along with Len Leigh (75), Wes Smith (75) and Aaron Simmers (76).

Neta Thouard was on course early in the day and returned nett 77 to win the ladies’ medal. Runner up Lyn Ludlow finished one shot back on nett 78. Lorraine Evans and Linda Kelly each collected a rundown prize.

The winner of the Dale Mullins trophy for the men was Scott Constable who carded the best gross score of 78. This year, the ladies also played for a Dale Mullins trophy. Another countback was required to determine the winner with honours going to Nikki Waterworth with a score of 99.

Count back’s proved popular with another needed to find the winner of the least putts in the men’s division after three players recorded 27 putts for the round. Wes Smith eventually got the nod and collected the prize.

No such difficulty in the ladies putting stakes. Kay Webb was a clear winner with 31 putts for the round.

This Saturday, an individual Stableford has been scheduled. Players are still required to have their name on the time sheet and can do so using the usual methods. Members should have received an e-mail outlining the current conditions under which golf and the club are now required to operated.

BOUNDING BACK TO THE BUSH After COVID-19 forced the local Bullecourt Bounders Orienteering Club into a hiatus of several month the club is finally able to schedule orienteering events. The first will be held this Sunday (July 12) in the Passchendale State Forest, north west of Stanthorpe. The courses in the Passchendale forest have been used for orienteering for almost 30 years and are a popular venue for the sport as they combine open pine plantations, eculaypt forest and areas of granite and are suitable for competitors of all ages and levels The event on Sunday is certain to once again attract many Orienteers from Stanthorpe, Warwick and Toowoomba who will relish being back in the bush again.

Event organiser, Liz Bourne said that seven courses will be offered on Sunday to cater for all ages and levels of ability There will be short, early courses suitable for beginners and instruction will be available to those who require assistance with basic map reading and navigation skills.

Ms Bourne said, “If you would like to learn more about the sport are most welcome to come long and try it out.”

AFL BACK ON DD AFL Queensland Darling Downs (AFLQDD) teams including the Warwick Redbacks have been back in full training since the lifting of restrictions. The seven team, 10 week competition gets underway this Saturday. The fixture season will run until Saturday September 12 and will be followed by Semis and Finals culminating with the Grand Final on Saturday October 3.

The Warwick Redbacks will have to cool their heels until Saturday week as they start the season with a bye. Their season will open with a home game against Coolaroo.

In the meantime they are getting plenty of running miles into their legs and working hard on their fitness.

ROLL UPS AT EAST WARWICK Roll-ups continue to be held every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday afternoon at the Warwick East Bowls Club for bowlers who wish to keep up their skills in preparation for a return to full competition. WATER RATS PREPARING FOR SEASON TO COMMENCE The Warwick Water Rats season is just a couple of weeks away and players and like players in other sports the Union boys and girls are keen to get things underway. The Men’s team is expected to be extremely competitive in the B Grade competition while the Women’s team is sure to benefit under the coaching of Rat’s hooker Anthony Savovski. After being ruled out of playing the 2020 season following a neck injury Savovski has stepped up and taken on the coaching role.

The ladies haven’t had a coach for a couple of seasons and the appointment is set to make training sessions easier more fun and also take some of the pressure off the girls on game day. The Ladies train is on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 6pm. The appointment can only enhance the Water Rats reputation. While it may only be a small club the community aspect remains the most important for the Water Rats according to secretary Tess Enchelmaier.

The Club is hoping for another successful Ladies Day - their marquee day which raises funds for charity.

With the easing of restrictions union fans will be able to see their club back in action from July 18.

EXTENDED GOVT FUNDING - FAIR PLAY The Queensland Government has announced it is extending community funding for sport to assist kids to get back in their game of choice in 2020.

Parents will be able to apply for $150 Fair Play vouchers. The vouchers can be used to offset a variety of costs including registration fees, uniforms, or a variety of other costs associated with getting kids back into sport with a registered activity provider e.g. Warwick Gymnastics or Warwick Netball, Stanthorpe Junior Cricket; Ballandean Clay Target Club or Stanthorpe Pony Club. There is a limit of one voucher

per child per year. If you have already applied and received a round two voucher the expiry date has been extended until November.

The new round of applications opened on July 3 and close on October 7. Vouchers must be presented to an activity provider

by November 11 and must be redeemed by activity providers by November 25 2020.

In addition to the FairPlay Vouchers, parents of Junior Netballers who return to the court on July 18 at Barnes Park will also enjoy reduced fees for this shortened season.

Secretary Linda Bunch says the Warwick Netball Association is endeavouring to as organisers endeavour to get kids out on the court without further financial cost to parents’ The eight week season has been designed to welcome back existing players and encourage those who have not tried the game to give it a shot.

All sporting organisations both senior and junior who are returning to play following the lifting of restrictions should head to the State and Federal government websites and take advantage of the many grant opportunities that are being released.

SOUTHERN DOWNS FOOTBALL ACADEMY Players from the Southern Downs Football Academy will return to training oen day per week from Monday July 13 with the following session times :The SDFA still has places remaining for players who wish to join their teams at the Hervey Bay Mini world Cup tournament from September 27 until October 2nd.

There are opening for players in U12, u15/16 and women’s (13 and up).

There is little doubt the 76 members and visitors who faced the starter in the pro-shop sponsored stroke event for July certainly thought so.

David Craggs, soon to be doing his best Crocodile Dundee impersonation in the wilds of far north Queensland, claimed the honours with a 65 nett off his 14 handicap.

Filling the next best, Runner’s up spot was Jon Pearson with a nett 67. Are the rumours true that their needs to be some serious swabbing done to help account for his recent winning streak!

Featuring in the ball rundown were Neville Heard (67), John Brandon (68), Garry 2 Names; Charlie Morrison; Trevor King and Adam Hart (69) returning 71 were the occasional uni student Rhys Farrell; Mal Galloway; Keith Clark; Eddie Big Cods; Terry Bennett; Keith Farrell; Danny Lyons; Greg Wallace and Shane Reid. Terry Bennett is desperately searching for a nickname for Shane Reid that won’t see him locked up or Spun out of Spin.. Not many highlights in this week’s report but I am led to believe there was a Turtle and a Rabbit in the field not sure in what order that pair finished.

On Wednesday (8/7/20) Sporters will be playing the Betta Home Living trophy and the following week the Hawker Road Function Centre trophy.
