Dandenong-based state MP and ALP factional powerbroker Adem Somyurek has been “sacked” as Minister for a second time while denying explosive allegations of branch-stacking. In a stunning report by 60 Minutes and The Age, the Local Government and Small Business Minister was accused of using Parliamentary staff and paying thousands for fake memberships as part of the alleged practice. Premier Daniel Andrews announced he’d sacked Mr Somyurek from the Cabinet, his caucus and “his team”, and expected Mr Somyurek’s ALP membership to be “terminated”. He said that the matter would be referred to Victoria Police and the anti-corruption body IBAC for investigation. Mr Somyurek’s comments about Cabinet colleague and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams were “completely deplorable” and “shameful”. “On that basis there’s no place in my government for him. “Mr Somyurek was not offered an opportunity to resign. He’s not worthy of an opportunity to resign - he was sacked.” In a statement on 15 June, Mr Somyurek said he’d advised Premier Daniel Andrews of his resignation. “With respect to allegations made around memberships of the party, I reject those and will be providing a rigorous defence during any party process.” He however apologized “unequivocally” for his “inappropriate” language during an allegedly tapped phone call about Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams. “I accept and take full responsibility for the fact that my language on a number of occasions was simply not appropriate. “While Ms Williams and I have been at odds factionally for many years, I should not have used the language I did about her and I apologise to her unequivocally.” In the reported call, he allegedly said of Ms Williams, the Minister for Women, for Aboriginal Affairs and for Preventing Family Violence,

Vandals target club By Brendan Rees A lout has been caught on camera appearing to carelessly kick a football to vandalise a sports facility in Cranbourne East, leaving a hefty clean-up bill. Video obtained by the Cranbourne Cricket Club appeared to show a teen brazenly kicking a football into the exterior ceiling at the cricket club during broad daylight on Sunday morning 14 June, causing about $10,000 worth of damage. The senseless act, which is believed to have occurred sometime between 10am and 11am, has devastated club officials who say the vandals left three holes about 10cm wide in the exterior ceiling of the clubrooms. Cranbourne Cricket Club president Chris Lamb said he found the video on social media of the teen appearing to damage the club while another filmed him. A third is also suspected to have been involved. Mr Lamb described the vandalism as “pretty disheartening”, but fortunately the club based at Casey Fields, had identified two of the youths which had been handed to police, along with the video. “They’re standing under it kicking the football into the cement sheeting,” he said. “To brutally honest I’m shocked there was no one up around there at the time. People are usually kicking a ball or something out on the oval. “Casey Fields is a pretty spectacular place, it’s a shame that it would be disrespected in that manner,” he said, adding the club was already struggling during the pandemic, with the loss of a sponsor this week. “We can’t bring our clubs together yet, someone can go there and vandalise the place and things like that it’s pretty disappointing.” Victoria Police have confirmed the incident and are investigating. “Cranbourne police are investigating following an incident of criminal damage which

I’m sure they’ll be in for a shock when the Cranbourne Police go knocking on their door.”

Bunjil set to re-open on return to ‘normal’ By Brendan Rees Spaces at Bunjil Place will begin to reopen on Wednesday 1 July - as the city takes tentative steps to a return to normality. Casey Council announced on 6 June that the gallery, box office, library, cafe and customer service centre would reopen. Opening hours will be adjusted and certain safety protocols will be required but council says “we’re so excited to welcome our community back into our wonderful building” following building’s closure on 18 March. All other spaces at Bunjil Place will remain closed. “Our team has been working hard this week to consider all possibilities for reopening to the public, whilst still keeping in line with recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services,” a notice on the Bunjil Place website said.
Covid creeps up in Casey
In more good news, the gates at Myuna Farm in Doveton have reopened to the public on Tuesday 9 June. Members will be required to purchase tickets during the initial stage of the reopening - with session times also changed. However, on 9 June, council posted on its Facebook page that the popular Cranbourne GP Run had been cancelled this year - an event that attracts thousands of people. The event was due to be held on Saturday 24 October. “Following the recent announcement by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to cancel the 2020 Australian Motorcycle GP at Phillip Island, and the restrictions in place due to Covid-19, the City of Casey will not proceed with the 2020 Cranbourne GP Run,” Casey Council said in a Facebook post. “We are sad to cancel this but look forward to seeing you back at this popular community event in 2021.”
Covid-19 infections have crept back up in Casey City with two new additional cases confirmed in 24 hours, according to the state’s latest health data. The 17 June figures showed the city’s active cases climbed to six - with the total tally sitting at 76. In nearby council areas, Greater Dandenong recorded three active cases while Cardinia had four and Frankston zero. It comes as Victoria’s cases rose by 21 to 1762. Of them, 1671 have recovered. There have been 190 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that have been acquired through unknown transmission. Currently five people are in hospital, including two patients in intensive care. One of the new cases identified through community testing has been detected in a resident of Rosstown Community aged care facility in Carnegie. The facility has been placed into lockdown while contact tracing, testing, cleaning and other necessary public health actions are being undertaken. Another of the new cases identified through community testing has been detected in a contractor at Stamford Plaza Hotel, a hotel with returned overseas travellers in quarantine. The investigation into this case is ongoing and all public health actions are being taken, including contact tracing and deep cleaning. An additional case detected through community testing has been linked to a staff member at Sunbury Animal Hospital Another of the new cases has been identified through investigation of the outbreak previously linked to Monash Health. This outbreak has now been confirmed to be a primarily family-based outbreak in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. The total number of cases linked to this outbreak is now seven. One case listed as under investigation in yesterday’s media release has now been linked to a worker at Inspira Early Learning Centre in Gladstone Park. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton downplayed any suggestion of a second wave of the virus, saying “we have made some great progress in slowing the spread of coronavirus”.

Funding for school works Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas is encouraging local schools to apply for a share of the State Government’s $20 million Minor Capital Works Fund. Government schools can now apply for grants of up to $500,000 to modernise and improve learning spaces and boost the condition and character of the school. Examples of eligible projects include upgrades to classrooms, sports ovals and toilets as well as the installation of new playground equipment, bike sheds, fencing, basketball and netball rings, and football or soccer goal posts. “I encourage our local government schools with those minor projects on their mind to apply for funding,” Mr Maas said. There are two available funding streams: applications for Stream 1, for smaller projects with maximum funding available of $50,000, close Friday 17 July. Applications for Stream 2, for larger projects with maximum funding available of $500,000, close on Friday 14 August. The Fund is part of the Victorian Government’s $2.7 billion Building Works stimulus package to create jobs and kickstart the economy following the Covid-19 pandemic. As the ex-deputy mayor of the City of Casey I have no issue with our council being sacked back in February over corruption allegations by the then Local Government minister Adem Somyurek. What I do object to is this man now faces corruption charges of his own regarding branch stacking in the ALP and the way he spoke about women. Yet this man who has been sacked by his own ALP party is allowed to sit on the backbench of parliament and will still receive a wage of around $180,000 a year until an investigation takes place by IBAC, or he is removed by the people at the next state election. I think the State Government should replace Somyurek position with an administrator just like they did with Casey council. Rex Flannery, Narre Warren.

Striving for security By Brendan Rees Sarah (not her real name) was asleep in her bed when she had a knife run down her throat and threatened with a handgun. “I was punched awake,” she vividly recalls as the group of men attacked her one night at 3am in February. “It didn’t knock me out,” she says but adds: “I was black and blue from head to toe, had cuts and everything down my face and around my throat.” Although placed in crisis accommodation in City of Casey, Sarah, who is aged her 30s, still guards her house at night and “patrols out the windows”. The mother of three has been on the public housing list for 21 years and believed that wait would’ve continued until she got the recent news she would be able to stay where she is until Department of Human Services (DHS) placed her in permanent accommodation. The State Government announced on 13 June a $9.8 million package would extend its temporary accommodation for rough sleepers to continue until the end of July in light of the coronavirus pandemic. While the announcement was welcomed by the Council to Homelessness CEO Jenny Smith, she urged the State Government to also invest in long-term solutions ending homelessness. “When coronavirus income payments end in a few short months, and the rent moratorium is over, there is going to be a major increase in the number of people accessing homelessness services for the first time,” Ms Smith said. “In order to prepare for this influx in demand, we need to act now, and acquire more social housing.” DHS March quarter waiting list figures for the Dandenong office as the second highest in the state with 4356, behind Western Mel-

Her immune system is also suppressed - and lives in fear of contracting Covid-19. “If I get a cold then I’m in hospital for weeks,” she says. “I do online shopping where I can ... Police are investigating a suspicious car fire in Cranbourne after it was believed to have been set alight early on Friday morning, 12 June. Fire crews from Cranbourne were called to Cleopatra Drive just after 4am following reports of a burning vehicle. Cranbourne CFA senior station officer Ugur Ali said the car was well alight by the time firefighters arrived. Mr Ali said it was believed the car had been stolen and dumped off the side of the road near powerlines - with “some sort of accelerant used”. The blaze was brought under control within 10 minutes - with firefighters remaining on scene until 4.20am. “It was pretty well involved when we got there,” Mr Ali said, adding none of the occupants had been present with the vehicle. A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed the fire was being treated as suspicious. “Casey CIU are investigating the circumstances surrounding a car fire after emergency services responded to reports of the burning vehicle on Cleopatra Drive,” the spokesperson said. Excited students are back By Brendan Rees There were smiles all-round as all students returned to the classroom for the first time in two months. Government schools across Casey welcomed back students in Years 3 to 10 on Tuesday 9 June as part of the final step of returning to face-to-face teaching and learning. At Cranbourne Primary School students were greeted by balloons as they poured through the gates - where school captains Dylan and Kyana also raised the Australian flag to mark the occasion. Parents also had a new-found appreciation for teachers after juggling working from home in makeshift offices while setting up temporary classrooms. Principals reported they had implemented a “smooth” stagger in drop-offs and pick-up times to reduce the number of adults around school grounds at any one time, as well as staggered break times to manage the number of students mixing across year levels. Despite some “technical hiccups” involved in remote learning - which also proved to be a “strange environment” - principals say there had been “many positive comments” from parents, who were “very happy to hand their children back to us”, according to Narre Warren North Primary School principal Connie Vandervoort. “It was wonderful to see all the children returning to school,” Ms Vandervoort said, as she and assistant principal Ben Zimmerle greeted the happy faces at the gates - with some of the younger children also having learned to cross a road on their own during their time away. She also mused that many had physically grown with some of the grade 5/6 children are “now taller than I am”. Over the past week, Ms Vandervoort said teachers had facilitated lessons based on stu-

Back at the tools By Brendan Rees It’s been a long wait but they’re back on the tools and loving it! Men’s Shed members across Casey are returning to their sheds and knocking about with their mates again after the pandemic forced their closure. It comes as the Australian Men’s Shed Association launched new online initiatives to help keep older men connected during the shutdown. Casey’s Junction Village Men’s Shed secretary Garry Cahill said its members were excited to be back and seeing their mates face-to-face again - just in time for Men’s Health Week from 15 - 21 June. “It was quite a break,” he said, humouring
that “their wives are very happy to see them go for a while too”. He said the members were allowed to attend the shed two days a week during the shutdown - to cut some timber and take it back home to work on projects. “Some of the guys have been at home making toys if they’ve got the machinery to do it.” The shed officially reopened on Tuesday 9 June where there were plenty of smiles to mark the occasion. Mr Cahill said the closure has been contradictory to the fundamental purpose of the movement - which is in the name of preventing social isolation. And the men wasted no time getting back to work - by making a range of wooden toys
which will be donated to the Cranbourne Salvation Army in December and distributed to disadvantaged families for Christmas. “We had 310 last year,” Mr Cahill said. “We’re probably up to 100 at this stage but we’re pushing ahead now. We’re hoping that we will get to that target.” Mr Cahill said the shed was looking for more members to join with the promise of friendship and a sense of purpose. He said the shed not only offered woodwork and manual crafts, but an environment where men from all walks of life had the opportunity to participate meaningfully in their community. Libraries raise nearly $5k for reads By Brendan Rees A massive $4700 has been raised to continue Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) free book delivery service. Since stay-at-home restrictions came into effect in March, CCL has been delivering books, DVD’s, magazines and ‘binge bags’, to local residents in their homes. CCL has begun a fundraising program which seeks to raise money to continue delivering books and other items to locals in their homes, because even when this pandemic is ‘over’ there will still be people in the community who cannot safely leave their homes. A father has spoken of his shock after his 14-year-old son was punched in the face and robbed by thugs as he waited at a Cranbourne bus stop. The father, who asked not to be named, said three youths described of Sudanese appearance, approached his son at the Lyall Street bus stop, near Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre, at 5.30pm on Monday 8 June. He said the youths asked his son for the time but as he pulled out his phone the thugs snatched it out of his hands and told him to unlock it. When his son refused to give into their demands, one of the youths “randomly” punched him in the face. “While he’s holding his hands trying to catch all the blood from his nose they’re just yelling at him to unlock the phone,” he said. The youths grabbed his son’s iPhone XR as well as a bag containing a brand new Kathmandu jacket which he had just purchased. “They’ll real brazen; they’re not scared of anything,” he said. “The jacket was still in the Kathmandu bag with tags, the receipt, the whole lot.” He said his son had been left devastated after saving his pocket money for two years to buy the jacket - with $840 still pay off for his phone. He said his son had been hesitant to report the incident to police out of fear the thugs will “know who it is”. “We’re trying to get him to give as much information as he can ... to prevent it happening again to someone else.” He said he was disappointed with the court system which “is letting us down”. “It’s like this all the time ... they’re out on bail and they’re back out and they do it again.” The bus stop has become notorious for crime in recent months - with parents renewing calls for authorities to install CCTV cameras. Cranbourne Police Sergeant Leanne Huth said due to the number of robbery incidents, police were conducting a high visible presence to “flood the Casey area” - targeting shopping precincts and local transport hubs for “public reassurance” - while drawing on additional resources. Casey’s manager of safer communities Caroline Bell confirmed the alleged incident which was being investigated by Victoria Police. “The Lyall Street interchange is part of a larger redevelopment of Cranbourne township and relevant community safety concerns, including whether CCTV cameras are appropriate in this location, are being considered within this context,” Ms Bell said. “Council is committed to working with the Department of Justice and community safety and Victoria Police to improve safety and security of commuters, “ she said, adding council “strongly encourage” residents to report any criminal incidents to police.Last October Casey Council said it was reviewing its CCTV within the municipality - with Lyall Street and surrounds to “be considered as part of this process”.

By Brendan Rees A cat rescue group has celebrated a purrfect day after de-sexing 35 felines on Saturday 6 June in Cranbourne West. Meow Rescue, a not-for-profit organisation for cats and kittens in Melbourne, has been running a program aimed at people experiencing financial difficulty in the southeast where cats can be desexed, vaccinated and microchipped for $50. “It was a great success,” Meow Rescue com-
mittee member Kelly Davidson said of the day which was held at Meow and Friends Community Vet. “Meow rescue de-sexed 27 as a part of the programme and 35 were done on the day. “Our volunteers and carers have worked tirelessly to fund raise for this community project,” Ms Davidson said.? “Our aim is to help reduce the number of unwanted kittens and cats in our community.” All rescued cats are cared for by the rescue group’s team of expert foster carers in their own homes.

A name to inspire trust
By Narelle Coulter The Alphey name has long been associated with honest, reliable service in the Cranbourne/Devon Meadows area. Ian Alphey is the owner of Alphey’s Garage in Arundel Street, a business he started a de-
cade ago. Ian’s dad grew up in Devon Meadows and ran a truck and bobcat hire business. “The name has been around for a fair while,” said Ian, who has lived in the Cranbourne area his whole life. “When we do jobs it is my name going out the door. We take pride in the work we do every day because it has my name on it. “Our slogan is ‘Tailored car servicing and repairs’. Stitching a worthy cause By Brendan Rees A group of Endeavour Hills volunteers have stepped up to create homemade masks to protect the community from Covid-19. Using scrap material and sewing machines, the volunteers at St Paul Apostle Church have so far made 80 reusable masks in just three weeks - which will distributed free to the public. The group named Justice Peace and Integrity Committee say due to masks selling at “exorbitant prices” in retail stores, they took it upon themselves to make their own from cotton. Volunteer Hector de Santos said the group initially put in $120 to their project - but
thanks to a kind-hearted woman who runs the parish’s quilting group, much of the material was donated. The volunteers have four sewing machines with eight people helping in total - including some cutting and ironing material to make it easier to sew. “If it gains popularity we’ll try and get some money from somewhere else wherever we can,” Mr de Santos said. “We’re all very keen because they all realise how important that little work we’re doing is.” The volunteers are adhering to safety protocols including sanitising their hands and disinfecting hard surfaces.

‘Simple snaps’ pay it foward By Brendan Rees A simple photography idea has given a whole new meaning to giving back to the community. Photographer Lauren Matthews of Hallam started a new project in May called ‘Pics Out Front’ on Facebook where she offered families and businesses across Casey to have their photo taken at the front of their home or workplace for free. In return Ms Matthews asked participants to shop local or donate to a charity in the community in her mission to pay it forward for those doing it tough during the pandemic. The concept took off - with about 42 families and organisations signing up. “I got good feedback from every family that I visited,” Ms Matthews said. “It was just nice to hear it actually triggered people’s minds to think it would be nice to give back to the community. “I have seen this being offered all around the world including a few fellow Victorian photographers and it’s something I would love to be a part of.” Ms Matthews, 32, who has been a photographer since she left high school and started her own business last year called Lauren Maree Photography, said she provided a digital online gallery of photos for all participants after taking a “few happy and simple snaps” to “commemorate this time and our community”. In turn people donated to local cafes, shops, charities, and a police station. The project finished at the end of May but many were keen for it to continue: “I had a lot of people actually enquiring when I finished up to see if I could keep going.”
Speedsters royally caught By Brendan Rees One hundred and thirteen motorists have been hit with speeding fines in Casey as part of a Queen’s birthday long weekend road blitz by Victoria Police. During the four-day Operation Regal period, police detected 182 offences - including 25 unregistered vehicles, and four drink drivers. Seven drug drivers and four disqualified drivers were also detected. Other common offences included mobile phone (four), impoundments (two), and 12 unlicensed drivers. On Sunday 7 June, a probationary driver returned an alleged breath test reading of 0.145 per cent in Berwick. The driver’s car had been involved in a single vehicle collision on Berwick-Cranbourne Road. Police allege the vehicle had been travelling south when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road, taking out a street light and a number of street signs, before returning back to the correct side of the road. The driver was found at the scene and interviewed for careless driving. Luckily, no one was harmed. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy urged motorists to take extra care after a 30-year-old male motorcyclist died after failing to negotiate a bend and collided with a tree in Hoddles Creek on Sunday 7 June while a 28-year-old woman tragically died following a two-car collision in Kangaroo Ground on Friday 5 June. “I urge that people ride to the conditions, as particularly in these cooler temperatures there is a risk that roads will be wet, visibility is poorer and in regional locations black ice may be on the road. If travelling in groups only ride to the capability of your weakest rider,” Ms Murphy said. Across the state police detected 146 drug drivers, 269 drink drivers and 4693 speeding offences.

Special charge scheme has some ratepayers peeved By Brendan Rees A new levy that could see ratepayers fork out up to $25,000 to help pay for the construction of unsealed roads has been slammed as “excessive” and “outrageous”. Casey Council approved the new levy in its new five-year special charge scheme program at a recent meeting - which has disgusted ratepayers who say the charge “would cause undue financial stress to many” and “should be charged to developers”. The levy was capped at a maximum of $25,000 per property while council agreed to contribute 25 per cent to the total cost of construction and asphalting of unsealed local roads - up from zero per cent. The special charge scheme allows council to fund the construction of new infrastructure such as roads, footpaths and drains through a charge on ratepayers that would benefit from the works. A draft copy of the policy was available for public consultation in February - which received a total of 29 written submissions, many of whom objected to the scheme. According to a council report, a Cranbourne East resident said in there submission that “City of Casey charges enough for rates as it is” and any “major road construction such as the widening of the South Gippsland Highway is the responsibility of State Government not the council.” 14 STAR NEWS

A Berwick resident believed “council should pay more attention to slowing down building of new estates in the area to allow time for adequate infrastructure to catch up and be in place,” while another took aim at council saying their finances should be managed “more appropriately and not sending council members on junkets”. Many submissions also said no ratepayer “should be charged for basic infrastructure like roads and drains”. Casey Council chair administrator Noelene Duff defended council’s stance at the May meeting, saying while she appreciated there was “some controversy” about the scheme, “there’s a view that the community feel these are works that the council should pay for”. “The work that’s been done on this has been quite comprehensive,” Ms Duff said. Ratepayers Victoria president Dean Hurlston said the $25,000 levy was “disgusting” and branded council as “out of touch” with the community. “Council is sitting on its hands and gouging ratepayers yet again,” he said. “They can charge developers to ensure that council can provide open space and get base infrastructure - they’re not doing that enough.” He said the charge was a result of “lazy management” from Casey Council who already had a “fat profit margin” - with ratepayers paying “extraordinary levels of rates”.
“It’s already costing ratepayers more to have administrators in because it was dysfunctional. “This is so outrageous that Ratepayers Victoria is prepared to table this with the Minister for Planning Richard Wynne and the Local

tablespoons pumpkin seeds, lightly · 2toasted · 1 small handful of coriander leaves · 1 lime, cut into cheeks, to serve AVOCADO DRESSING 125 ml (1/2 cup) olive oil 1 Hass avocado. Hass avocados have a creamy texture that’s perfect for smashing. 1 handful of coriander leaves 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon chilli powder zest and juice of 1 lime pinch of sea salt

Rates freeze push By Brendan Rees The Casey ratepayers group have called on Casey Council to consider freezing or reducing rates after identifying possible savings in the draft council budget. Speaking at the 9 June council meeting, president of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) Brendan Browne said while ratepayers acknowledged the measures that council had taken with the current recession - “we say these do not go far enough”. Mr Browne was one of eight people representing groups across Casey who presented their submissions to council’s administrators in response to the draft budget, which was streamed via video to council’s Facebook page. “In terms of achieving a rate reduction we say it is very achievable,” Mr Browne said, making particular reference to the loan repayments of Bunjil Place and the $4.25 million arts expenditure program. “We say, look, we’ve got the opportunity at the moment to take advantage of low interest rates so extending the loan ... would not be overly costly,” he said. According to a CRRA report submitted to council, the borrowings for Bunjil Place were forecast to be $45,989,000 by the end of the financial year - with plans to pay off Bunjil Place over the next 10 years. “An average rate reduction (significant enough to offset the garbage charge increase in the average) would cost around $5.3 million,” the CRRA report said. Victorian Ratepayers president Dean Hurlston echoed the CRRA’s calls for a rates freeze, saying it “whole heartedly” supported their concerns. “The most important thing they (council) can do right now is not increase rates and ensure that they provide as much assistance as possible under their hardship policy to those who’ve lost their jobs or their livelihoods,” Mr Hurlston said. “They also need to defer any nonessential projects and spending and just wait one budget cycle to measure the full impact of Covid.” All administrators thanked the submitters for their presentations noting it was “very helpful for us”.
Administrator Cameron Boardman said the “level of quality and information” in the council officer’s document as well as the public’s submissions would be “very helpful for us to further consider this matter”. “We look forward to receiving further briefings from council officers and providing an update at subsequent council meetings,” Mr Boardman said. Administrator Miguel Belmar also praised the “high quality” of presentations which has “given plenty for us to think about”. “It’s also very pleasing to see the level of community activity over a number of issues,” he said. A total of 25 submissions were received from the community. Submitters will be advised of council’s consideration of their submission at the 23 June special council meeting.
Casey Council has welcomed a major State Government fund - for which it hopes to receive up to $2.5 million to help deliver priority projects. Casey will be one of 16 councils vying for a slice of the expanded $25 million Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) which was announced this month. The new funding will bring forward new and upgraded facilities including libraries, local parks, playgrounds, community centres and sporting facilities. Casey Council chair of administrators Noelene Duff said the funding was vital in “creating a connected community” - with the city having invested $25.5 million for 18 different projects in the past five years through the GSF. “GSF is a key part of the funding needed to address the needs of our fast-growing community,” Ms Duff said. The funding has also contributed to the new pavilion facilities at Sweeney Reserve in Narre Warren as well as Selandra Community Hub and the Clyde North and Endeavour Hills community precincts. Casey Council is also hopeful the state budget in October will provide additional funding support for the Casey community, who have been some of the hardest hit by the economic and social impacts of Covid-19. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas said the funding would help create jobs and support businesses to rebuild from the crisis. The Australian Taxation Office is urging people to make sure their income details are complete and finalised before seeing their chosen tax agent. For most Australians, income statements have replaced payment summaries. This means that instead of receiving a payment summary from their employer, most people’s income statements will be finalised electronically, and the information provided directly to the ATO. You can view your income statement through myGov and the information from it is automatically included in your return in myTax by the ATO. If you use a tax agent, they will also have access to this information. Income statements show their year-to-date salary and wages, PAYG withholding tax, and any employer super contributions in near real-time, but it is important to wait until it is finalised before lodging a tax return. Employers have until July 31 to finalise income statements. “We often see people too eager to get a tax refund making obvious mistakes, which can either delay processing the tax return or result in a bill later on,” ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat said. “It’s important to check that your employer has finalised the information in your income statement and it is marked as ‘tax ready’ before you lodge. “Other information from banks, health funds and government agencies will also be automatically inserted into your tax return. For most people this will happen by the end of July. “Lodging once we have included all of your information in your tax return makes it even easier, but if you are lodging before then, make sure the information provided is complete, accurate, and up to date to avoid delays or a debt later on,” Ms Foat said.

Kerrigan’s at State-of-the-art clinic top of charts By Brendan Rees Singer-songwriter Kerrigan La-Brooy says he’s “pinching himself” as his first single of his latest album tops the global gospel charts. The senior pastor of Gethsemane Church in Berwick says it’s an achievement he never expected “at this level”. Two weeks ago his single ‘Just A Little Talk With Jesus’ debuted on five gospel charts in Australia and worldwide. This included ranking fourth on the Airplay Gospel Express Charts, seventh on the Official Country Music Tracks Top 40 Tasmania jumping an impressive 28 spots in its second week - and 24th on the European charts. It also debuted at number 21 on the Official Australian Country Songs Top 40. “I never expected this sort of reaction; certainly not at this level for a gospel song in particular,” the father of six said. The single comes after Mr La-Brooy released his first gospel 10-track album called ‘Thank You Precious Lord’ in May. Mr La-Brooy, who has won an array of Casey and state awards, particularly for his volunteer work with the Gethsemane Charity, said he had his fingers crossed to reach higher positions on the charts this week. “I’m absolutely rapt and also slightly bruised because I’m still pinching myself,” he said. “Thanks to those of you, who keep requesting my songs, buying CDs, tuning into the radio stations and listening to my interviews. “This would not be possible without your support so please accept my heartfelt appreciation.

Casey Council has announced all of Casey’s streetlights will be powered by renewable energy from January next year. As a part of Council’s Emissions Management Plan, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and work towards achieving carbon neutrality, council has signed a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Procurement Australia to supply Casey’s streetlights with renewable energy from Victorian wind farms.?? In 2018, council conducted a community environment survey which demonstrated almost 90 per per cent of the respondents were concerned about the potential impacts of climate change within Casey’s community.?? Following this survey, council identified power purchase agreements (PPA) as a potential opportunity for council to achieve its carbon neutrality goal. 18 STAR NEWS

The renewable energy will be sourced from Bald Hills Wind Farm in Wonthaggi from 1 January 2021 until the end of 2027, and then sourced from another Victorian Renewable project until 30 June 2030. Throughout the life of the agreement Casey’s streetlights will produce no greenhouse gas emissions.

Back on the learning curve By Danielle Kutchel When Rozi Myint found out she was pregnant, her first reaction was fear. Not of the pregnancy journey, or even of giving birth: instead, she was scared of what people would say about her. As a teenage mum-to-be, Rozi had heard all of the stigmas, and she was horrified by the judgement dripping from people’s mouths. “They’d say ‘she’s a young mum, she got pregnant at such a young age, she won’t succeed, won’t finish school, won’t have a good life’,” Rozi recalls. “Those words were so hurtful.” She was determined to challenge those perceptions - and this year, she was the first person to enrol in the Young Parents Education Program (YPEP) at Hallam College. YPEP offers pregnant or parenting young people a chance to re-engage with their learning to finish year 12 - levelling the playing field for them for future employment and training. It’s an inclusive space, with cots, baby toys, food and drinks around the room: parents can bring their babies to class with them, and a parent supporter is on hand to help with feeding, changing and sleeping while the parents study. There is no judgement from teaching staff, only a desire to help these students reconnect with their studies in the most flexible and adaptive way possible. Appointments, childcare issues and sick kids are all accounted for and accepted. Students undertake VCAL and complete a VET qualification, and also have access to experts in parenting, early childhood development, financial literacy, mental health, wellbeing, housing and legal issues. The space also allows the parents to socialise with others in their situation, something that Rozi has relished.

end up?’” she says. “Here, I met new girls, amazing teachers and people that support around the classroom. I’m so much happier.”
The program has been running at Hallam since the beginning of the year, and at nearby Foundation Learning Centre in Narre Warren since 2018. Eight young women are enrolled in the Hallam program, with staff expecting more as time goes on. Some, like Rozi, found the school themselves while others hear about it through word of mouth or referral from services like Maternal Child and Health. Project leader Mary Tresize-Brown said situating the YPEP program in a school helped give the young parents a community to be part of. The school’s leadership team has fully embraced it. On Thursday 11 June, the class played host to Jo White, a presenter and TV personality who shared her own story of becoming a mum at age 17, and going on to follow her dream of becoming a social worker and then TV presenter. “I want them to know it’s not the end of the world when you became a young parent,” she told Star News Group. “You can achieve for you and your baby.” Through sharing her story, Jo said she hoped to help raise awareness of young parenthood and reduce the stigma that young parents face. “We should treat people like people no matter what’s happening in their life,” she said. It’s a message that resonated with Rozi, who is excited to be close to finishing year 12. “I’m going to get my year 12 pass, and that is my first step, to prove to people that I can finish school as a young mother,” the aspiring real estate agent said. “My next step is to get a job, and then I will go from there and see what the future holds. “I will do it, and I can do it. You’ll see me one day being successful!”

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

La Trobe Federal MP Jason Wood made the announcement on 11 June, saying this funding would go a long way in supporting organisations and their volunteers through what has been a tough year and a competitive process. “La Trobe has been significantly impacted by coronavirus this year. Mr Donnellan said the grants were a key part of the government’s investment in supporting the community in these challenging times. “These local clubs are an integral part of our community and this support will help them pay the bills and make an eventual return to play and competition that little bit easier,” Mr Donnellan said. “Ensuring community sport and active recreation organisations survive this crisis and come back better than ever is critical to our economic and social recovery, and to our community’s physical and mental wellbeing.”

Cornel’s hard life journey As a council worker of 31 years, Cornel Corb takes pride in ensuring the streets of Casey are clean and nicely presented for residents. It’s a far cry from the life he left behind in Romania before arriving in Australia in 1989. “It was a hard journey. But I had to escape my country for safety reasons due to the communist political ideologies and my religion. Transylvania, Romania, was part of the communist bloc,” Mr Corb said. “When I first came, I could only say my name and where I came from, that was about it.” It’s an amazing story Mr Corb wanted to share as Australia celebrates Refugee Week from June 14 to 20. Refugee Week is an annual activity to inform the public about refugees and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. Today, Mr Corb is a proud Australian saying he “felt a sense of fulfilment when I saw myself as a part of Australian life”. But the first two years of his arrival were “particularly difficult”. “When I first came to Australia, I came by myself. I was separated from my family, my wife, and my two-year-old son, for two years, until they came over to Australia,” he said. “As a part of my application, some family members from my wife’s side who were already in Australia, sponsored me.” Mr Corb initially fled to Azerbaijan, which
is bordered by Turkey and Russia, before going through the United Nations to declare refugee status and participating in a number of interviews to be granted a visa to come to Australia. Mr Corb said he was grateful for the City of Casey for having offered him his first job as a foreman - just five months of arriving in Australia, and a few months of English classes. His current job is a cleansing supervisor, ensuring the city is well-presented. “I have children who are also working in our council, and my granddaughter, who is one of the greatest joys in my life. She sings, dances, and tells me what to do,” he said. When thinking about what ‘welcome’ means to him, the church community in Endeavour Hills immediately springs to mine for Mr Corb. “The pastor took our details and did not say much,” he explained. “The next day, he came to my door and started to talk to us, and adopted us as a part of his own family. We were even invited to his family’s Christmas celebrations. To me, this is the warmth of welcome. “I also met this guy Doug at work. When I first started, I had to drive a truck without much English. He took his time to explain and cracked jokes to make me feel welcome. I could see he wanted me to be happy. That is what welcome means to me.”

Sergei steps up By Greg Campbell Sergei Evglevski has the bloodlines of shooting royalty. He is the son of an Olympic bronze medallist and a six-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and a two-time Australian Olympic team gunsmith. What his mother, Lalita Yauhleuskaya, and father, Sergei Evglevski Snr, don’t know about shooting could be found on the back of a postage stamp. And if there was anyone destined to follow them in the world of shooting, it was a young Sergei. “I was always really interested in it - my parents could tell from a young age,” he explained. As a child, the Berwick resident would join his mother on the medal podium at events in Australia and proudly take her medals to school to show off to his mates. Her three gold medals and one silver medal won at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games earned him special privileges in primary school. “I remember having the whole day off as the principal asked me to go to every classroom and pass around the Commonwealth Games medals. That was pretty grouse,” he proudly recalled. Taking her Sydney 2000 Olympic Games 25-metre Pistol bronze medal (when representing Belarus) to school took some convincing, but eventually she relented. Evglevski’s own international shooting career commenced in 2015 when he competed in the Junior World Cup in Germany. The die was cast. A year later, he earned Junior World Cup silver and bronze medals in Germany and Azerbaijan and an international shooting career was truly launched. In 2018, he was a regular on the senior World Cup circuit - competing in Germany, Mexico and Korea. As he aimed to carve out his own career, his parents offered some sage advice. “They told me not to listen to anyone. A lot of the (international) coaches now were shooters with mum,” Evglevski said. “I didn’t realise it was going to be true, but a lot of people would come up to me and say you’re the son of Lalita and Sergei and I hope you shoot as good as them. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
“It would give me that extra pressure. They (my parents) told me to acknowledge it, but don’t pay any attention to it.” In a rare honour in any field of sport, he and his mother were Australian team-mates at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. It was the last of Yauhleuskaya’s five Commonwealth Games appearances, and Evglevski’s first. He won a silver medal in the 25-metre Rapid Fire Pistol, while she was unplaced in the 25-metre Sports Pistol final. Yauhleuskaya was bursting with pride as her son claimed a podium finish. He was much more than just a team-mate - he was her own flesh and blood. “She was bawling her eyes out. My first thought when she started crying was ‘oh no, I only got a silver medal. That’s why she was crying’. That was my competitive side coming out. But she was crying with joy and being so proud of me,” Evglevski said. “We went to a Channel Seven interview and she couldn’t speak. She was tearing up. She was saying ‘I’m so happy for him.’ It was pretty emotional, and I started tearing up as well.” Evglevski is grateful for his Commonwealth Games experience, as it provided him with a high level of understanding of being part of a major, multi-sport competition such as the Olympic Games. “It definitely prepared me because I was able to dip my toe in the water and now, I can dive in,” he said. After the Gold Coast Games, Yauhleuskaya announced her retirement. An incredible 40 years of high-level competition led to debilitating elbow and back problems, which only firing the chamber for the last time could heal. She enjoyed a 20-year, five Olympics association - two for Belarus and three for Australia - and her son will head to his first Olympics in Tokyo next year. The family’s Olympic handover is now complete, and the Games dynasty is set to continue for decades to come. Evglevski enjoyed a consistent, high-performing Olympic nomination event series registering four consecutive qualifying scores of 580 and over to comfortably secure Australia’s single Rapid Fire Pistol quota position. He equalled his personal best qualifying score of 584 in the last qualifying event in Sydney - a score which would have been good enough to reach the top six final at the 2016
Rio Olympics. “I did perform well, and I was happy with myself. But there’s always so much to improve on. There’s always little things you can do,” he said. “I feel as though I’ve only done half the job because the goal for me is to perform at the Olympics to the best of my ability. Making the team was a short-term goal, but I’m so proud of myself because I had the goal to perform under the pressure,” he added. With over 12 months until the Olympics, Evglevski is focusing on training and completing the final three units for his marketing degree at Victoria University. Assisting him in his Tokyo preparation has been the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS), where he has access to strength and conditioning experts, sports psychologists and nutritionists. The VIS strength program is presently focusing on better posture when shooting, and the ability to hold his posture for a longer amount of time. “If you have an air pistol match for two hours, you can start slouching and your neck can start bending so you want to hold that posture for long periods of time,” he said. The Covid-19 pandemic has prevented Evglevski from shooting at his home club, Yarra Pistol Club. But when restrictions are fully lifted, he will be training for two to three hours per day under the watchful eye of national pistol coach, Vladimir Galiabovitch. Evglevski realises the standard of the Olympic competition will be high, but he knows he has the talent and technical ability to compete with the world’s best on the biggest international sports stage. He says his biggest challenge will be to be fully mentally focus, and to complete a full match without any mistakes or regrets. However, a medal in Tokyo is not his primary focus. “The goal I’ve set for myself is to prove to people, and the whole shooting world, not just to be Lalita’s son, but being my own shooter,” he said. He is already well down the road to being his own world class shooter and maybe, in years to come, Lalita Yauhleuskaya will be known as Sergei Evglevski’s mother.
The Casey Demons will form part of a newlook VFL competition in 2020 featuring eight clubs, after AFL Victoria announced the return to play date on Tuesday afternoon. The VFL is set to kick off on Saturday, 1 August with a seven-round home-and-away season, with Box Hill, the Casey Demons, Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Sandringham, Werribee and Williamstown set to battle it out for the premiership. With the shortened season and less sides in the competition, the finals series will be played over three weeks with the top-four clubs competing, with the grand final to be played on the weekend of 10 October. A VFL split-round will be fixtured to provide flexibility while preserving the integrity of the competition. All eight clubs will return to full-contact training from Monday, 13 July to prepare for the shortened season. AFL head of talent pathways and state league competitions Tristan Salter said despite the new-look VFL competition, it was pleasing that all clubs have come together and worked hard collectively to get a season start date set. “We want to thank the Victorian Government for their support of Victorian football, and thank the wider Victorian community - for an environment where VFL can resume,” he said. “In line with the variations to the women’s competition this year, the focus for both VFL and VFLW football in 2020 is to ensure talent in both leagues are provided with the best opportunity to develop as footballers and ultimately reach the elite level. “The VFL Competition will look different in 2020, but in consultation with all eight clubs, (we) have developed a model which enables a fair and equitable season for our fans, clubs, players, coaches and officials. “The VFL community has been patient and committed during this time, and all players and coaches are ready for training and matches to resume. “While not all AFL-aligned VFL teams will participate in the competition, we look forward to seeing each of the five standalone VFL clubs involved in the season. Each of those traditional VFL clubs have played a significant role in ensuring the season goes ahead and we commend them.” Salter said that the focus was on the safety and wellbeing of players, coaches, volunteers and fans and understands the challenges that await to get the 2020 season underway. “While the Covid-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we hope to start and finish the 2020 VFL season in a safe and responsible manner, based on strict protocols now being finalised with the public health officials,” he said. “We know how much these competitions mean to players, coaches, officials, volunteers and fans and we look forward to working together to ensuring all clubs return to play in a safe and well managed environment.” The AFL is continuing to work through arrangements for potential crowds and broadcast models, while there will be a further update in the coming days on a revised fixture, season details and broadcast arrangements. The AFL will continue to review all arrangements including potential crowds and broadcast models in consultation with players, clubs and Victorian State Government and respective Health Officers.

The ‘Bowlologist’ returns By Nick Creely He’s one of Casey-South Melbourne’s favourite sons and one of the south east’s greatest ever cricketing talents. And now he’s back where it all began. Damien Fleming, widely known as the ‘Bowlologist’, will return to the Swans in an official capacity in 2020/21, signing on as a high performance consultant, which will see the ex-Australian swing bowler work closely with the club’s pace bowlers and conducting small group training sessions, as well as maintain his ongoing commitment to the club’s Damien Fleming Academy. The 50-year-old originally from Springvale South, who took a total 209 international wickets for Australia across 20 Tests and 88 One Day Internationals, is now one of the most-loved cricket media figures in the country, appearing for the Seven Network in the Big Bash coverage while also hosting the Bowlology podcast. But he’s also an extremely talented coach, having been involved with the Australian Cricket Academy after retiring in 2003 due to ongoing injuries. Fleming - who was in the club’s team of the 20th century alongside some great names such as Lindsay Hassett, Keith Miller and Graham Yallop - said he was excited to be back involved officially at the club after staying in touch with the club regularly over the years. “I’m delighted to be back involved at CaseySouth Melbourne in what are exciting times for the club,” he said. “Having played for the Bloods for 17 summers I’m very passionate about getting stuck
into my role and helping the next generation of CSM cricketers. “I’m thoroughly looking forward to working with all players and coaches, and passing on all the knowledge I’ve learnt playing in successful Australian and Victorian cricket teams as we strive for success across all our teams.” Swans president Shaun Petrie said to add someone of Fleming’s calibre was a major boost for the club. “Damien has always been very generous with his time in the past. He has regularly appeared at club functions in guest speaking roles and he’s always been available at training sessions with our own Damien Fleming Academy (the club’s Junior Development Program),” he said. “We’re so lucky to have ‘Flem’ involved. He’s a very generous guy, this just shows the passion he has for CSMCC and the development of young promising talent. “Imagine being a young up-and-comer at our club and getting to talk cricket, tactics, and keys to success with someone of the calibre of Damien Fleming. “He’s not just a famous name, he’s an extraordinarily good cricket coach. Flem also knows what’s required to get selected for Victoria. “He’ll be an amazing resource for the club and our players”. Swans coach Brian Keogh told the Star News that the addition of the Australian great was going to benefit the club greatly, not only on the field, but off the field as well. “The first thing about Flem is that he’s just
such a likeable guy,“ he said. “We want to create a high performance environment, but we want to create an environment where people enjoy coming to training. He’s fantastic with that balance. “Technically, he’s as good as anyone in the country, and he knows Premier Cricket as well. The beauty of him is that he started out at Springvale South, to South Melbourne, to Victoria, to Australia. “He just knows how to push to that next level, and he’s just so invested - I’m catching up with him again on Thursday to go through the list. “He knows the first XI, but he wants to know the other grades.“ Keogh said that the club was looking to do things differently and invest heavily in each grade to try and bring the club as a collective into a strong position, not just the first XI. “This is no knock on any other club, but it can be difficult getting across to player one and player 55, it can be difficult,“ he said. “But because we’ve got such great depth in our coaching panel, we feel like we can coach right across the entire group, and give every player the coaching expertise they need. “When we sit down with Flem and Will (Carr) on Thursday, we’re not going to just go through the top five or six bowlers, we’re going through the list and give him a real insight into the playing group. “Someone like an Evan Allaway, who is 16 and come through all the state pathways, can spend some quality time with him, so it’s brilliant to have him around.“
The Swans’ coaching panel was finalised over the weekend, with ex-Sri Lankan star Thilan Samaraweera - who scored 5462 Test runs at 48.76 - re-joining the club as a specialist batting consultant, while highly-regarded coach Bathiya Perera has signed on as full-time batting coach and will help mentor the current wave of Swans batsmen as well as some of the emerging players, such as rising opener Ashley Chandrasinghe. “The thing about Thilan that people might forget is that he played 80-odd Test matches, he was an absolute jet,“ Keogh said. “After he left us, he went and coached at three national teams, and its likely at some point when things open up he’ll go back to doing it, so we’ve locked him in for pre-season and then we’ll reset. “As for Bath, he’s just really well-known and people speak extremely highly of him - he played 160 first class games himself, he was a serious player. “But the most important thing about both of them is that they’re both just great people and good fun to be around, and hopefully they can help contribute to that high performance but fun culture we want to bring.“ The three new signings cap off an impressive coaching group for the rising club out of Casey Fields, which will work closely with head coach Brian Keogh and senior assistant and coach-in-waiting Will Carr this season, as well as development coaches Mathew Pearson, Stu Fairley and Brett Lewis. Ex-State player, and Berwick cricketer, Nathan Pilon is also locked in once again to do some work as a batting and keeping coach.

The Chelsea Football Netball Club has advised AFL South East of its decision to withdraw its senior football teams from the 2020 Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) season, should it go ahead. The Seagulls - who play in the MPNFL’s Division Two with local clubs Devon Meadows and Pearcedale - made the decision after lengthy consultation with their board, members, and players, and as such have elected to withdraw the seniors, reserves, and under 19s from playing this year if a season gets underway. At this stage, the club’s decision excludes netball, which could run on separate timelines and commence later in the year. The club made the decision to withdraw the senior football teams for many key reasons; with player welfare, member and volunteer welfare, and financial sustainability decisive factors. A survey of the football playing group was undertaken, with 68 per cent of players concerned about their personal health and wellbeing if games commenced, while 70 per cent voted to cancel the season and recommence pre-season training for 2021 in October or November. Uncertainty still surrounding hygiene criteria to host or participate in football, as well as the lack of certainty regarding club sponsors and use of club facilities were also key factors for the club.
