Over a century of support
Students are well known and develop meaningful relationships.
Safe, happy and valued St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School’s Warragul Campus is a place where students are safe, happy and respected. The pastoral care of students is a focus of each school day and ensures that each child is well-known and can develop meaningful relationships with staff and other students. An online survey mapping tool that identifies students who are not feeling connected called ‘Trust Mapping’ is used in Years 3-9 as a proactive approach in regard to social and emotional issues that typically arise in adolescence and identifies where appropriate support may be required. When your child joins St Paul’s you can be confident that the positive learning culture translates to an environment where teachers can focus on bringing out the best in every
child and where children understand that they are at school to learn. The school’s classrooms at every level are notable for the focus shown by the students and enthusiasm for learning that exists. Curretly over 45 students travel to St Paul’s Warragul Campus from the Cardinia Shire on two St Paul’s buses that includes a supportive ‘buddy’ program for the first weeks of a student’s travel. Senior Scholarships for students in Years 10-12 open on June 30 and St Paul’s is also currently taking enrolments for 2021 and beyond. Recognised as one of the leading regional schools in Australia, St Paul’s welcomes you to contact their Enrolments Officer on 03 5623 5833 for further information.

Millions flow in to upgrade classrooms at two schools By Mitchell Clarke
Year 1 teacher Mr Barnes delivers a lesson online.
Hope builds This year Maranatha Christian School is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Dutch migrants established the school on Kidds Road, Doveton in 1970. The coronavirus has meant that the planned celebrations and school community have looked very different. Bill Jackson, principal, spoke about the importance of connection for students and staff during this unprecedented time of online learning. “Students will only flourish in their learning when they feel a sense of connection to their school, teachers and peers. This is even more important during a time of uncertainty and isolation,” he said. “As a school leadership team, we focused on technology that helped students learn together, initiatives that would remind them that they were not alone and identify families that required additional support.” Maranatha used technology that allowed students from ELC to Year 12 to interact with their teacher and peers online. This resulted in greater engagement, enhanced motivation and improved learning outcomes. Jenny Rus, deputy principal (junior), highlighted several actions taken to reach out to families. “We delivered both care and learning packs to the homes of a number of year levels across the school. The care packs included notes of encouragement, baked treats and a school beanie. I will always remember the excitement of our prep students when we arrived at their home with a special delivery,” she said. Colleen Dutlow, deputy principal (secondary), talked about how the school identified those who were struggling. “We rang every family and asked how they
A construction blitz to boost the Victorian economy will equip Kooweerup Primary School and Lang Lang Primary School with $2.25 million and $1.4 million respectively, to upgrade "tired and old" classrooms. The money will come from a share of almost $390 million to upgrade and modernise 57 projects, forming part of a greater $2.7 billion State Government Building Works package, which will create more than 1600 construction jobs across the state. Kooweerup Primary School's pledge of more than $2 million is in addition to the prepromised $250,000 from the 2019-20 State Budget. Lang Lang Primary School's $1.384 million is also on top of their $153,800 received from the budget. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said on Monday 18 May the funding reflected the State Government's plan to build the "Education State" where everyone is given a great education, no matter their background or address. She said the funding would ensure both primary schools were able to transform current facilities into modern learning environments. "We're investing record funding in education so all people in Bass, regardless of their background or circumstances, get a worldclass education," Ms Crugnale said. "These new and upgraded facilities will give students the modern learning environments they need to deliver the 21st-century education they deserve. "This investment will also build new

Both Kooweerup Primary School and Lang Lang Primary School were contacted for comment, asked how the money will benefit the small community schools. Of the Building Works package, $1.18 billion will be dedicated to education, with the intention to build new schools, refurbish classrooms and make schools more accessible for students and staff with disabilities. It's anticipated the projects will create space for more than 21,000 extra students in the education system. Premier Daniel Andrews said it "just makes sense" to invest in schools. "By investing in our schools, we're giving our kids the classrooms they deserve - and importantly, creating thousands of new jobs," he said.

Our pastoral and well-being teams moved into action when any issues arose, to provide support and encouragement to students and parents. The school also gave fee assistance to families in financial distress. We connected regularly with staff to see how they were going,” she said. Term 2 has been a challenging time for all students and teachers. However, Mr Jackson sees positives coming out of this time. “We are stronger as a community, experienced growth as individuals and have had an opportunity to reflect on what really matters. The challenge for all of us as we come out of isolation is to maintain the lessons learnt, including the importance family time, personal reflection and empathy for others,” he said.

Staff and students from prep to year 12 at Chairo Christian School are excited about returning to face-to-face teaching and learning, with Chairo having moved to online and remote learning from the final week of Term 1 in response to the pandemic. Executive principal, Simon Matthews, commented: "While our staff, students and families have done a truly remarkable job at home, we are now receiving many reports about how much they are looking forward to getting back to school soon!" Kindergarten students have been attending since the start of term, while a significant number of older students have also been onsite for supervised and supported online learning as part of the school's key worker program. Students in prep and above will be transitioning back to onsite classes from Tuesday 26 May. Those in prep to year 2 and years 10 to 12 will be back at school first, followed by all other students on Tuesday 9 June. Principal at the Pakenham Campus, Pete Wells, explained: "Although the government announcement didn't require all year 10 students to return to school in the first stage of face-to-face resumption, many of our year 10 students are undertaking at least one VCE subject. We therefore decided that they should come back at the same time as those in Years 11 and 12." Senior school captain Talitha Suter has been pleased with how well learning from home has been going but said she was very relieved to hear about classes at school starting again."Our teachers have all been wonderful," reported Talitha, "and we've pretty much kept up with our studies, apart from some SACs and SATs that we'll have to get done when we're back at school." "Really good online systems, plus top teachers, has meant that things have gone well in the circumstances, but it's not the same

Chairo is prioritising providing a safe and healthy environment, ensuring the re-connection and engagement of all staff and students, and facilitating a smooth and calm transition. Multiple procedures will be in place in relation to health, cleaning, hygiene, social distancing and campus access to help ensure the wellbeing of all members of the school community. Families interested in finding out more about Chairo's campus on Bald Hill Road between Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon are invited to contact the enrolment coordinator, Hannah Sollberger. Enrolments at St Clare's are growing rapidly.
Reaching full potential State-of-the-art facilities, passionate staff, a genuine sense of self-worth and a clear vision based on Gospel values. This is what St Clare’s Primary School in Officer offers. As a new school which opened in 2015, enrolments at St Clare’s are growing rapidly. As part of the parish of St Patrick’s in Pakenham, the school is on site with the Early Learning Centre and the Officer campus of St Francis Xavier College. For those in the catchment area, this provides a seamless transition from early childhood to secondary education. Each learning space has been designed to
provide a rich environment conducive to relevant, meaningful learning. Areas are spacious and well-resourced so as to meet the needs of the 21st Century learner. With the final stage of classrooms finished last year, this year the school will begin a new playground, sports field and major landscaping works. Before your children even come to school, you, as parents, have taught them so much. They’ve learned to listen, to ask questions, to be filled with wonder, to say thank-you, to wash their hands, to pick up after themselves and to look out for each other.
The job of staff at St Clare’s is to continue these life lessons and nurture the holistic development of each child. For the St Clare’s family, numeracy and literacy skills are core elements of education; but so is Religious Education – developing empathy, social justice and a strong moral compass. Staff encourage active play and healthy bodies; understanding other cultures through learning languages; and the confidence that comes with developing creativity through the performing and visual arts. Student achievement is measured not only by academic growth but by each child’s emo-
tional, social and spiritual wellbeing. Being part of faith-filled community instills students with a sense of identity, a feeling of belonging and above all, a powerful sense of self-worth. At St Clare’s the aim is to have each child reach their potential; to be a well-rounded individual - within a supportive and caring learning environment. School tours are held by appointment. Books to help children cope with coronavirus How do you have an age-appropriate conversation with your child about coronavirus to help them cope during the pandemic? Books are a fantastic resource to help explain difficult topics, but age-appropriate ones on Covid-19 can be hard to come by. That’s why award-winning children’s author Michelle Vasiliu has collated a list of books that are useful to teach children about the virus. Michelle’s daughter Isabel, a St Margaret's Year 10 student, and son Ben, a former Berwick Grammar student, help put the list together. The books help children identify and process difficult emotions they may be feeling at this unprecedented time. The coronavirus outbreak has had a huge impact on the lives of children - they have been unable to go to school, play sport or see their friends, and some have seen their parents lose employment. There’s also the fear of the virus itself and the unknown of what else it may bring. Michelle has uploaded the list of COVID-19 books on her website and is now on a mission to share it with as many people as possible. “Eleven books are there … they have all 6W STAR NEWS

been generously donated by authors all over the world,” she said. “I could devote two weeks to looking for books. But for a parent trying to homeschool, and whatever else, they don’t have the time. “My area of expertise is I’m an author, so I put the list out there. “So many people say ‘thank-you for this, it’s so good’. Now I’m desperately trying to share it with as many people as I can.” Michelle says each book features simple language that explains what coronavirus is and why we have to practice good hygiene and social distancing. She says the books also go through the emotions children may be feeling. “They talk about the feelings - that it’s OK to be sad, angry, upset, whatever. And they always had that hope at the end, trying to alleviate the fears.” The books featured on Michelle’s list include links as the authors and publishers have given permission for them to be read online or downloaded at no cost. Officers were called to Cook Springs Reserve in Pakenham. 12425088-FA36-19
An illegal fishing operation in Pakenham has been uncovered by the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA). An anonymous tip off to the independent statutory authority alerted Fisheries Officers to the illegal use of opera house nets at the Cook Springs Reserve on 8 May. Officers from the Cowes station patrolled the area off Windermere Boulevard and undertook surveillance for several hours, however no fishers were observed. As a result, a total of 16 baited opera house nets were removed and taken away to be destroyed. VFA enforcement and education director Ian Parks said anyone found to be in possession of the nets could face serious fines. “Had we caught someone with 16 opera nets they would be charged with ‘possessing commercial fishing equipment without authorisation’ and would likely face court over the matter,” Mr Parks said. “Maximum penalties could include fines of several thousands of dollars.” Most commonly used to catch yabbies, the State Government banned the use of opera house nets in all public and private waters throughout Victoria from 1 July 2019. “Opera house nets are a trap and can kill air-breathing native mammals like water rats and platypus,” Mr Parks explained. “That’s why they’re no longer allowed in public or private waterways.” The nets were replaced with open top lift nets, which can be used in both public and private waters. “Open top lift nets are a better option because they enable animals to escape to the surface whilst still being very effective at catching yabbies when fished actively,” he added. According to the VFA, opera nets can still legally be used in other states, and that local fishers may possess them to use when travelling and fishing interstate waters. If people see suspected illegal fishing in Victoria, they should 13FISH (133474) at any time. Callers can remain anonymous.

Rotary dunny spat over By Mitchell Clarke Busting Rotary Park users will finally get some relief when "state-of-the-art" public toilets are installed at the park. The long awaited announcement on 15 May follows a long running saga between the Rotary Club of Pakenham, who had been lobbying to the government to fund the essential service. In a joint statement, Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood and Cardinia Shire Council confirmed that two accessible toilet cubicles, with automated functions, and graffiti and vandalresistant surfaces, will be installed at Rotary Park, Toomuc Creek Reserve. The Rotary Club, who raised and contributed almost $10,000 to the project, was successful in obtaining $180,000 in federal funding and a further $30,000 from Cardinia Shire Council. The council will install and manage the ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the facility. Rotary Club of Pakenham's Ken Rook said the toilets would be an "asset" to the park, which is popular with the Pakenham Park Run group, families and dog walkers. "When you consider how busy the park is on Saturday mornings, and that the closest toilets are at Coles or the pub, this will make Rotary Park better," Mr Rook explained. "We've been pushing this for years and years, I lobbied for toilets years ago, but it all fell in a heap. I think this will be a great asset, when it gets done." La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the news was a "great outcome" for the Rotary Club of Pakenham and the new public toilet facilities will benefit all visitors to Rotary Park for many years to come. "This is another example of the passionate volunteers in our community banding together and working with different levels of government to shape and build an inclusive neighbourhood," Mr Wood said. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jeff Springfield commended the Rotary Club members on their dedication and advocacy efforts, stating the council was "pleased" to be able to work with them on the project.
Old photo - Gembrook MP Brad Battin, Ian Wake, Terry Williams and Grant Austen. 190150 "With admirable dedication, the Rotary Club of Pakenham has worked long and hard to bring the project to this point and will con-
tinue to make their local community proud throughout the delivery of the new facilities," Cr Springfield said.
Star News understands the toilets will be manufactured in New Zealand, with installation expected later on this year.
Teenage trio suspected of savage daylight attacks By Mitchell Clarke Two 16-year-old thugs have been arrested following a series of savage daylight street robberies across Pakenham. The three violent incidents took place on Thursday afternoon, 14 May between 3.304pm, a Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed. On each occasion, a group of three men allegedly targeted unsuspecting victims in search of valuables, brutally attacking them if they didn't comply. At about 3.40pm on Superior Waters, the
bullies approached a 24-year-old man and made demands for his watch before punching him in the face. The victim managed to escape the group and fled the scene with minor physical injuries. Five minutes later, the trio allegedly travelled to Windermere Boulevard and approached a 16-year-old and 17-year-old boy, also making demands for their belongings. Detectives believe the two victims attempted to run away, however the alleged offenders gave chase. They managed to catch up to the 16-year-
old and assaulted him before making off with his jacket. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Minutes later, the thugs zeroed in on yet another unsuspecting victim, this time a 16-yearold man on Bonneville Parade. The thugs allegedly made demands for his phone, but when the victim refused, police allege one of the men punched him in the face. The victim was able to escape the carnage of foot, receiving just minor injuries in the ordeal.
Police were unable to locate the three offenders, who fled the scene on foot prior to their arrival. Two of the alleged criminals were arrested by detectives from the Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit on Friday 15 May as a result of a search warrant. The men were later released pending further enquiries and are expected to be charged on summons at a later date. Police continue to search for a third man and urge anyone who witnessed the incidents to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Popular parks open By Mitchell Clarke Two popular council facilities will reopen to the public, providing some much needed welcome news to the community. Cardinia Shire Council announced that the closure of Mount Cannibal Flora and Fauna Reserve and Emerald Lake Park will be lifted in line with the State Government's announcement to gradually ease Covid-19 restrictions. Emerald Lake Park was reopened to visitors from Wednesday 13 May, while Mount Cannibal opened for exercise from Saturday 16 May. It's not quite a complete return to normality just yet, with the council forced to introduce a one-way only walking track, as new directional signage will be installed throughout the park. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jeff Springfield said visitors must continue to maintain a
Emerald Lake Park. 164986 physical distance of 1.5 metres and will need to stay on the track at all times. In line with State Government advice, people must not gather at the parks in groups of more than 10 people. "I encourage everyone to continue doing the right thing by following the gathering and physical distancing rules while out and about to help protect yourself and others," Cr Spring-
field said. "Please continue to stay safe, take care, and look after yourselves and others." Signage will also be implemented throughout Emerald Lake Park to ensure visitors are following gathering guidelines. The park's playgrounds, barbecues and outdoor gym equipment remain closed, as do the paddle boats, model railway and the Emerald Museum. Nobelius Heritage Park is open to the public. Casual bookings for weddings, funerals and gatherings in council outdoor spaces and recreation reserves can now be made, provided they meet State Government guidelines. Cardinia Shire Council was pleased to make the announcement that the "highly valued" space would be reopened to the public, Cr Springfield said.
Webinar to help ease financial stress By Danielle Kutchel With two in three Australians already experiencing some level of financial stress, the knock-on effects of Covid-19 will expose many more Victorians to financial vulnerability. An upcoming webinar aims to provide consumers with the support and resources to manage their energy bills in the face of skyrocketing costs after so much time spent at home. The free webinar, titled 'Energy Simplified', will be held on Tuesday 26 May from 6.30pm8.30pm and is supported by Cardinia Communities for Children. Communities for Children is a program of Anglicare Victoria that primarily works with families and children up to 12. The organisation has heard from linked practitioners and families in recent weeks
about concerns around paying for energy and grocery bills and is keen to offer assistance where it can. The webinar will be hosted by Consumer Policy Research Centre (CPRC) energy experts, Karl Barratt and Cameron Crome. "Through Energy Simplified we've designed a simple how to guide that tackles energy costs in four key ways: getting the best deal, accessing concessions, securing payment difficulty support from retailers, and how to save energy and stay comfortable in the home," said Mr Barratt. Cindy-Lee Harper, project coordinator at Cardinia Communities for Children, said the webinar would be ideal for anyone who is struggling with their energy bills. "It is amazing how much information is in the actual bill and where you can find information on that bill to benefit you. Knowing
how to approach companies to get discounts is great information to have and families will benefit," she said. The webinar will be followed by time for questions to be asked, and Communities for Children will follow up any unanswered questions. The presentation slides will also be sent to all those who register. Communities for Children is also sending out information packs to interested residents, containing step by step instructions on getting the best from your bills. "Individuals and families, no matter where they're from, can get more energy from their bill," Ms Harper said. Missing after long trek home By Jessica Anstice Police are searching for a man who went missing while walking from Dandenong to his home in Pakenham on Tuesday. David Margetts has not been in touch with his family or friends since 2pm on 20 May. Police have been told the 65-year-old left his work in Dandenong and walked to a Pakenham address. Police and family have concerns for Mr Margetts' welfare as it is out of character. He is described as Caucasian, 180cm tall with white hair. He was last seen wearing a grey jumper, white t-shirt, dark coloured shorts and white runners. Police have released an image of Mr Margetts in the hope someone recognises him and knows of his current whereabouts. Anyone who sees him is asked to contact Pakenham Police Station on 5945 2500.

Cardinia’s top volunteer Cardinia Shire Council has commenced National Volunteer Week by announcing this year’s Stan Henwood Award winner as Pakenham resident Ken Rook. The Stan Henwood Award recognises lifetime achievements in community service and volunteering. It commemorates the lifetime contribution that Stan Henwood made to his local community of Tynong, as well as the broader Cardinia Shire. Mr Rook has held a range of positions across various community organisations and groups, including the Rotary Club of Pakenham, which he has been part of for more than 35 years. During his time with the club, Mr Rook has taken on many positions including president, secretary, golf day chairman and club youth protection officer. Ken has also played vital roles in establishing the Rotary Club of Pakenham’s primary schools public speaking competition, as well
as the Rotary Club of Pakenham Annual Charity Golf Day which raises funds for community service projects. His huge contribution to the community includes various roles with the Toomuc Fire Brigade, where he was the communications officer, secretary and second lieutenant.Ken spent two decades with the Pakenham Scouts, taking on roles such as cub leader, badge secretary, Toomuc District Commissioner and Eastern Region Commissioner. He also spent several years as secretary of both the Australian and Victorian branches of the Suffolk Sheep Breeders Association, and has been president of the Presbyterian Tennis Club. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jeff Springfield congratulated Ken and extended his thanks to shire’s many volunteers. “Council warmly thanks and congratulates Ken on his dedication to our community, and
the significant, positive contribution he has made. Ken is an exceptionally deserving recipient of the Stan Henwood Award for 2020,” Cr Springfield said. “I would also like to extend my congratulations and thanks to all award nominees and every single volunteer within our shire. “Unfortunately, we’re unable to recognise Ken and our local volunteering heroes in person this year, however, the amazing and selfless work of our dedicated volunteers is an incredible community resource and it does not go unnoticed - especially in times such as these. Congratulations Ken!”

A warm smile goes a long way By Brendan Rees For great-grandmother Sandra Little, offering a warm smile and greeting to anxious patients is the greatest gift. The 72-year-old has been volunteering at St John of God Berwick Hospital for the past three-a-half years and says she "loves every minute of it". Whether it be making a cuppa, helping people with directions or simply having a chat to people, Ms Little enjoys the varied work. National Volunteer Week from 18-24 May celebrates the immense contribution volunteers make to the community such as Ms Little who spends two days a week every fortnight talking to patients and boosting their emotional wellbeing. "It's very rewarding because you feel that you're putting people at ease and you get to meet people as well," she said. "We've even taken people down to find their car in the carpark. "They're very grateful for the help they receive." However, Ms Little, who used to work as a cleaner for 20-and-half years for the old Berwick Hospital, has sadly had her volunteering commitments put on hold by the coronavirus pandemic. "Many of our volunteers are seniors; they didn't want to compromise our health," she said. Ms Little is crossing her fingers she'll be able to return soon: "It is hard and looking forward to when I can go back actually, I miss the people."
Like many, the Pakenham resident has been cooped up at home during the lockdown but has kept herself busy with various activities including baking, solving crosswords, reading,
and watching television. But her most joyous moment came when she was able to finally hug her one-and-halfyear-old great grandson and grandchildren

I'm excited to return back to school because I miss the routine of going to school, being organised, seeing my friends and teachers, and being at school in general. Personally, I like learning from home. I find that I have not been as stressed with my schoolwork and I can work more independently without distractions from other classmates. I had some technical difficulties with my laptop and internet connection to start with which in turn made me feel behind in study as I wasn't able to hear my teacher physically and my computer wouldn't load some days. I'm slightly worried about the preparation for end of year exams as no one has ever experienced this before so we all just have to take a leap of faith and trust the process. I've missed physically seeing people faceto-face. It has definitely put a strain on the social aspect of school and being able to interact with people. I also miss being at school and working towards my College Captain goals with Brendon Quintal. I'm looking forward to getting back to school and trying to have the best year by making the most out of it. Talia Parker, Year 12 College captain, Cranbourne Campus St Peter's College Captains

Covid scam By Mitchell Clarke A Covid-19 scam claiming to be a Pakenham business has been detected using a Cardinia Shire Council depot address. In a statement on Friday 15 May, the council confirmed they had been alerted to the Coronavirus related phishing scam. "The business claiming to be 'Pakenham Tractors', with website address https://pakenham-tractors.com/, does not exist," a council statement read. "The scammers have falsely used council's depot address and the company registration information of a registered business trading in Pakenham as proof of identity. "Council has reported this scam to ACCC ScamWatch and Victoria Police." The general advice to the community is to not make contact with the scammers by phone or email and to never provide personal, banking or superannuation details. According to the ACCC ScamWatch, scammers have been using the Covid-19 pandemic to take advantage of people across the country. Since the outbreak began, more than 2000 coronavirus-related scam reports with over $700,000 in losses, have been lodged with the organisation. In phishing scams, scammers reportedly pretend to provide information on Covid-19 through text messages and emails, disguised as government agencies. These contain malicious links and attachments designed to steal your personal and financial information, ScamWatch said.

Cardinia launches a Covid-19 cleaning blitz By Mitchell Clarke Extra cleaners will be deployed to the streets of Cardinia shire, under a four-week blitz to build public confidence and slow the spread of Covid-19 in the community. In an attempt to boost local jobs, the State Government announced 1500 short-term positions will be created to clean public infrastructure, retail centres and shopping strips. Employed workers will also disinfect and wipe down external surfaces such as street benches, handrails and door handles, traffic light buttons, poles, bicycle stands and bins. Jobs Minister Martin Pakula said although the initiative provided some much needed employment, it also helped to build community confidence as the staged lifting of restrictions begins. "This blitz provides immediate work and wages to people who need it most, so they can pay the bills while they search for more permanent positions," Mr Pakula said. "We're taking the first cautious steps when it comes to easing restrictions, and the jobs that will be done as part of this program are an important part of that process."
QUALITY MEALS HOME DELIVERED TO YOU MENU
The cleaning blitz is part of the $500 million Working for Victoria initiative, which was created to link jobseekers with work during the Covid-19 pandemic. Almost 3,000 people have found positions since the program was launched last month. The Gazette understands the State Government have been working closely with Cardinia Shire Council and Casey Council to prioritise local areas in most need of cleaning. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the positions will be spread across 10 regional and 26 suburban communities. "Local councils have a vital role to play in supporting communities as we look cautiously to the other side of the pandemic," Mr Somyurek explained. "That's why we're working with them to pinpoint the right areas for this cleaning blitz." The first successful batch of employees have begun work and advertising for the remaining jobs will continue until all positions are filled. The $130,000 commitment features Community Relief Provider Support Grants for local agencies and groups providing relief services, Community Connection Grants for community groups to strengthen community connections, and a Recovery Program to further support recovery activities within the community beyond the pandemic. Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Jeff Springfield said the grants aimed to support the community during the pandemic, as well as promote increased community connection and health and wellbeing beyond the pandemic. “We’ve been working closely with our local service providers in supporting our community and we know, that as a result of this pandemic, that the social and economic health of our community has been negatively impacted,” Cr Springfield said. “Issues across social areas have increased and continue to rise. Some members of our community are experiencing food shortages, financial hardship, and loss of employment. Family violence, homelessness, and increased poor mental health are all sadly on the rise. “Through the Community Relief Provider Support Grants we want to help ensure the capacity of our relief partners is sustained. We want to provide further support to agencies ‘on the ground’ so those most in need, and our most vulnerable community members, can in turn receive the support they need. “Council is also providing the opportunity to build greater community resilience, giving community groups the chance to apply for Community Connections Grants for projects

More than 20 giant bridge beams, weighing 60 tonnes each, will be transported to Pakenham.
Construction blitz on Pakenham line By Mitchell Clarke More than 20 “giant” bridge beams were transported over 130 kilometres, as part of a “huge construction blitz” on the Pakenham line. The blitz marked a “significant milestone” in the $80 million Cardinia Road level crossing removal project, which will see a road bridge installed over the rail line. The 24 beams, each 32 metres long and weighing 60 tonnes, will form the new road bridge, which will reduce congestion, slash travel times and improve safety for the booming Pakenham and Officer community. By 2026, it’s anticipated that more than 24,000 cars will travel through the crossing daily. Made in Kilmore, each bridge beam was delivered by trucks, travelling overnight via the Hume Freeway, Metropolitan Ring Road, Western Ring Road, West Gate Freeway, CityLink and the Monash Freeway. Support vehicles helped to escort each truck delivery to the site from Friday night, 15 May to Saturday night, 16 May. Closer in on the Pakenham line, construction crews were also busy working on scene at the Clyde Road level crossing in Berwick and the South Gippsland Highway crossing in Dandenong, to complete critical site establishment work. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said hundreds of crew members were

part of the blitz, working day and night over the weekend in a bid to minimise disruption. “These projects are part of a $15 billion investment to run more trains on the Pakenham line, and to get people home sooner and safer,” Ms Allan said. Almost 80,000 vehicles use the three level crossings each day, and with boom gates down for up to a third of the two-hour morning peak, commuters are far too familiar with the traffic woes. “Work at these three level crossing removal projects are being carefully coordinated to minimise disruption,” Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said.
The Cardinia Road level crossing is one of 17 crossings scheduled to be removed from the Pakenham line. Major construction began in October 2019 and works are set to be completed in 2021. Congested level crossings at Racecourse Road, McGregor Road and Pakenham Main Street are also penned to be replaced with a rail over road design by 2025. The level crossing removals teamed with the Metro Tunnel project and new “bigger and better” trains will create an extra 45 percent capacity, equivalent to more than 120,000 extra weekly passengers on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines during peak periods.

An open space the size of four tennis courts will be created once the dangerous and congested Cardinia Road level crossing is removed. As major construction is well underway to remove the level crossing, attention has shifted to the design of the new park. To help shape the design of the outdoor space, Pakenham locals are being called on to have their say, by providing feedback about the look, feel and future use of the space. The area, located under and around the new road bridge, is being dubbed as the perfect place for the community to come together to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said the creation of open space was a "big win" for the Cardinia Shire community.
"I'm pleased to announce new open space will be created by the project," she said. "We promised to ease congestion and make the Pakenham community safer by removing level crossings - we're doing that, and creating new open space at the same time." A new digital engagement hub has been designed, to ensure that people can stay up to date, while indoors during the Covid-19 pandemic. Residents also have the opportunity to provide feedback on three options for an artistic graphic that will be applied to an interior wall underneath the road bridge. The site will cater for a range of recreation activities and interests and community feedback will help shape the final designs. "I encourage locals to jump online to have
their say about how it looks and how they would like to use it," Ms Crugnale added. Last year, the community provided feedback to improve local connections, safety and landscaping and, in response, the design was updated to include two sets of stairs on the western side of the road bridge. The stairs will enable residents to cross over the rail line safely and connects them to the local shopping and community centre, bus services and Cardinia Road Station in addition to the existing station underpass. Final designs for the new open space will be released later this year. To have your say, visit engage.vic.gov.au/ bigbuild before submissions close on Monday 1 June. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Providing comic relief By Danielle Kutchel With most of the community spending more time at home, there has never been a better time to get into comics. Whether you’re brand new to the comic book world or are looking to continue with your favourite series, there is something for everyone at Secret Headquarters. Secret Headquarters opened four years ago, and since then has built a dedicated local following while also cementing its place in the wider comic book community. The Beaconsfield comic emporium is filled from wall to wall with books spanning multiple genres and authors. There are of course all the Marvel and DC favourites, along with titles from Dark Horse Comics, Image and more. Manga fans will find plenty to their liking, and there are scores of books appropriate for younger readers too. Secret Headquarters also stocks a range of puzzles, action figures and pop vinyls to get imaginations firing. In exciting news for comic book readers, owner Kirsty Litkowski said new books will be coming in from 20 May. Coronavirus has slowed distribution of comics around the world - but, Kirsty says, even if there are no new books “there is always a book that’s new to you”. “It’s your chance now to jump on them,” she says “People can catch up on things they haven’t had time to do and rediscover their old favou-
rites,” she adds. Comic books are a guaranteed boredom buster, Kirsty says, and will keep kids entertained for hours. A new online store means customers can still shop at Secret Headquarters from the safety of their own home, and people from all around the state have jumped on board to support the small business. Staff are also running a delivery service for customers, along with standard postal options. She is grateful for the community’s continued support in getting the business through this tough time. And although World Free Comic Book Day has had to be postponed due to the pandemic, Kirsty says comic books can still offer relief from the negativity in the world. “There are so many amazing stories and ad-

stay connected while you stay home! Casey’s new admin team Minister for Local Government, Adem Somyurek, has appointed a panel of three administrators to the City of Casey. The appointment of Noelene Duff PSM, Cameron Boardman and Miguel Belmar was announced on Thursday 14 May and follows the dismissal of Casey City Councillors on 19 February 2020. They will remain in the position until October 2024. Ms Duff was previously appointed in February to the role of interim administrator and will now remain on the panel, serving as the chair administrator. Mr Boardman and Mr Belmar will commence in their roles on Wednesday 20 May 2020. Mr Boardman was elected as a Victorian MP in 1996, serving two terms. He is currently acting as the director of the Oceania Cyber Security Centre, and previously was chief executive officer of au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA). Preceding his role at auDA, Mr Boardman was executive director for investor engagement within the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Mr Belmar is an experienced barrister and member of the Victorian Bar who has advised and appeared in matters involving town planning and land development law. He has appeared for applicants and objectors at VCAT hearings and Planning Panels. In 2010, he became a nationally accredited mediator and he has mediated matters in a variety of legal areas. Mr Belmar has previously been a member of the Victorian Football Federation Tribunal and heard matters involving infringements of
the rules of soccer. City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson said the organisation welcomes the announcement of the panel of administrators, which allows the organisation and community to move forward with governance clarity given the uncertainty experienced over the past few months. "The continuation of Ms Duff on our administrator panel is welcome news. We have made significant progress on key improvements to Council decision-making and reviewed policies and delegations since Ms Duff commenced in February, all of which are focused on the organisation increasing decisionmaking effectiveness and transparency to residents, ratepayers and key stakeholders and to pursuing best practice in the way Council does business," said Mr Patterson. "I look forward to working in partnership with Ms Duff, Mr Boardman and Mr Belmar to continue enhancing the organisation's performance while addressing the key areas identified in the Municipal Monitors report." Ms Duff said she believes the Casey community will benefit immensely from having such an experienced administrator panel to lead them during the next four years. "I am looking forward to Mr Boardman and Mr Belmar commencing next week so that we can begin working together with the council officers to deliver and advocate for infrastructure and services for the rapidly growing Casey community," said Ms Duff. While in office, administrators must perform all the functions, powers and duties of a councillor of the City of Casey, as set out in the Local Government Act.

ENJOY FINANCIAL SECURITY AT AVIVA
MOST of our lives we dream of a time when we can enjoy less responsibility. Less time doing the tasks we have to do and more time doing the things we actually want to do. For most of us financial security is the key to experiencing this freedom and that’s why we work so hard to make sure we are in the best financial shape possible when we retire or are approaching retirement. Downsizing is a great way to enhance financial security because in most cases the price you get for your larger old family home is a lot more than you pay for your new home. The result? Some cash in the bank. Aviva Communities in Officer offers people 55+ the opportunity to downsize to a contemporary new home in a secure gated community. Each home also has access to The Lodge – a homeowners' clubhouse with indoor pool and spa,
sauna, gym, wellness space, cinema, bar, bowling green and more. Aviva Communities Officer is a land lease community where you own your home and lease the land on which it sits by a Weekly Site Fee. If you are eligible for the pension most people are able to access Government Rental Assistance which reduces the Weekly Site Fee. Financially living in a community like Aviva Officer makes a lot of sense because: · You pay no stamp duty on the purchase · You pay no council rates each year · We include your household power costs as a benefit of living in the community – so no more gas and electricity bills · Insurance costs are a lot less – recent research showed our homeowners saved between $350 $560 dollars a year Homes at Aviva Officer start from
$389,000. You can inspect one of the six displays in safety by private appointment at 34 McMullen Road, Officer. If you want to find out how it all works call downsizing specialist Jackie on 1800 961 585 or visit the website on avivacommunities.com.au ●

We can help your business...
Come Back Stronger! Dear local business partners, The Coronavirus has triggered a major economic shock, and local businesses are doing it tough. However, throughout history when transformational shocks to the economy occur, they always create opportunity too. In times of crisis, we need to push panic aside and make calm, clearheaded decisions – and look for OPPORTUNITY! • The JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments will assist in supporting the local economy. • Initial surveys show much of this stimulus money will be spent locally. • Restrictions are slowly easing, so expect consumers to be more active. • The restrictions have created pent up consumer demand across our region. • Demand for local consumer goods and services is likely to be higher than normal, given continued severe restrictions in other sectors. • For some, this could provide a greater opportunity to spend. There is plenty of opportunity! And the businesses that are most proactive will seize it. It may seem counter-intuitive, but there has never been a better or more important time to work on your next marketing move. Our team can help you engage with thousands of locals through our printed and digital newspapers, news websites, social channels and provide tools to enhance your online presence! Now is the time to plan and act! We’re ready to help businesses design and implement marketing campaigns that tap into local opportunities. No obligation, just trusted advice. Call us NOW on 5945 0608 - we’d like to help you COME BACK STRONGER! Regards, Mandy Clark Advertising Sales Manager Star News Group mandy.clark@starnewsgroup.com.au

SPORT
It’s Tangles’ Cup quest Former Star News sports editor Brad ‘Tangles’ Kingsbury is on the cusp of realising a sporting dream. Kingsbury has a share in promising stayer Oceanex, who won her way into the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup by winning Saturday’s Andrew Ramsden Handicap at Flemington. He and fellow coterie members at the Bonbeach Football Club own a five per cent share in the four-year-old mare, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent junior. The $70,000 purchase is now rated a 26-1 chance to win Australia’s most famous race on Tuesday 3 November. “We’ve only got a five per cent share between us, but that’s not the point,” Kingsbury said. “We are all part of the journey. We get all the emails from the trainers and now we’ve got a runner in the Melbourne Cup. It’s unbelievable.” Kingsbury is a life member at Bonbeach, having played and coached there for years. Given there are no patrons allowed at the races, he watched Saturday’s race with a few other members of the syndicate in a bar at his new Chelsea home. The syndicate kicked off in 2018 at the suggestion of Steve Cochrane, another racing tragic at the club. “I have had horses before, but a lot of these blokes have never been involved before. It’s great.” One of Kingsbury’s first forays into racehorse ownership was Ace Kingdom, trained out of Pakenham by Chris Vilcins, who won four races at Pakenham and Bairnsdale. Others in the ownership included Star News Group managing director Paul Thomas, group editor Garry Howe, former journalist Megan McNaught (now Gomez) and payroll clerk Karen Tivendale.
Former Star News sports editor Brad 'Tangles' Kinsbury celebrates a winner at Caulfield. Kingsbury explained that he has had a lifelong interest in racing. “I reckon I’ve been betting since I was 15 and have been in horses since about 1999.” He said the Melbourne Cup campaign wasn’t really on the cards for Oceanex, who had not really been given a staying preparation. “This was never her aim,” he explained. “We were going for the Doomben Cup. After she won the Matriarch last year we set her for
the autumn, with two races in Sydney and then on to Queensland. “She had a couple of ordinary runs in Sydney, but they rearranged the program in Queensland so we brought her back down here.” On 2 May she won the Port Adelaide Cup at Morphettville - “she gave Sopressa wind-burn” was Kingsbury’s assessment - and then won the Andrew Ramsden, earning her a spell and a spring campaign in Melbourne.

A return to training is within reach of local clubs By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely QUIZ NUMBER 1713
The path forward has become a little clearer for community football and netball clubs with AFL Victoria providing an update on the return to training. A memo sent by the AFL's Head of Community Football Victoria, Stephen O'Donohue, to the AFL Victoria affiliates on Saturday - and seen by the Star News - outlines a nominated return to training date of next Monday, 25 May. "Returning to play in a safe, hygienic and controlled manner is paramount to the AFL," the memo read. "The safety and wellbeing of our participants is our number one priority. As such, our return to play strategy has been focused on ensuring we have the clear endorsement of State Government and public health officials at every phase of return." In the memo, O'Donohue states the timing of May 25 allows for the opportunity to communicate AFL Victoria's protocols with leagues and allow volunteers and clubs time to digest the protocols, go through an education period, and prepare themselves ahead of returning to club-sanctioned training. The 'return to train' protocols for community football in Victoria include: Training to resume in groups of up to 10 people. The group of 10 does not include a

coach or the minimum number of support staff who are reasonably required to manage the activity. Two groups of 10 can utilise the same oval, provided they do not operate closely together, and the oval is split into two zones. Berwick Springs senior coach Rodney Benstead said for his club - which plays in the AFL Outer East competition - there's still a lot of uncertainty around the situation. "It's a bit unknown still - a lot of our players have running programs and are working hard," he said. "We're waiting on the league to see how it looks. "The big question is the crowds and the process of match day for us, and how that works with netball." Benstead said his club is keen to start back training, but, again, there's still "a bit of the unknown" about it. "Groups are meeting up now, and doing a bit of skill work - we'll meet and map out a road to where we need to be," he said. "I guess every club will be pretty keen we're no different. "We've been connected right through this. We want to be positive, and be optimistic. "For everyone's health and wellbeing, it's just good to go outside - to see kids out kicking the footy is great. It's what it's all about."

Sarah’s Sapphire Crown By Mick Floyd The brilliant Black Opium finally shed her bridesmaid tag with victory in the Group 1 Sapphire Crown at Sandown Park last Thursday night. A firm favourite throughout the series, Black Opium was made to work hard for the win after only beginning fairly and settling third behind Aston Silk and Spring Fair through the first turn. But Black Opium swept past Spring Fair down the back straight and set off in pursuit of her kennelmate, switching to the rails as they swung for home and powering to the line for a three-quarter length victory in 29.57, much to the relief of handler, the Pearcedale-based Seona Thompson. “She’s finally done it!” she said after Black Opium finally broke through at the highest level of the sport at her seventh attempt. “It kind of went how we thought. Jason (Thompson, Seona’s husband) had been saying all week that Aston Silk might spoil the party, and when I saw her lead and ‘Sarah’ miss the kick I thought she might. Aston Silk is a magnificent little greyhound, she’s still only young so to run second in a Group 1, I’m sure Ray (Borda, owner) would be thrilled.” “But ‘Sarah’ did everything right. She railed through and that’s something that we’ve really noticed this preparation - that she is coming from behind and it’s something she wasn’t doing before.” The win was her 25th from 49 career starts and took her prize money beyond $500,000. Most significantly, it was her first feature race win - remarkable when one thinks that it was 18 months ago when she ran second in the TAB Melbourne Cup. So with a group race win finally on her CV, what’s next for Black Opium? “We haven’t really planned anything, but she’ll keep racing for as long as she wants to
A bridesmaid no more - Black Opium claimed a famous Sapphire Crown victory for Pearcedale handler Seona Thompson (pictured) and trainer, her husband Jason. Picture: SUPPLIED and if she’s still around later in the year we might try again for the Melbourne Cup - who knows,” Thompson said. “She’ll tell us when she’s had enough but right now, she’s showing how much she wants to be out there.” The win was trainer Jason Thompson’s 10th Group 1 victory at Sandown Park and second
Sapphire Crown success, following Peggy May’s 2012 win. Since becoming a race restricted to female greyhounds in 2002, the Sapphire Crown has been won by some of the greatest greyhounds to grace the track, including hall of famers Bogie Leigh, Paua To Burn and Xylia Allen; Melbourne Cup winner Betty’s Angel, and Greyhound of the Year Cindeen Shelby.
Three heats of the Group 1 Harrison-Dawson - for male greyhounds - were also run on the night. While series favourites Simon Told Helen and Tiggerlong Tonk won their way through to the final today (21 May), it was Jax Bale which qualified fastest with a stunning 29.136 gallop - the third fastest time recorded at Sandown Park so far in 2020
Eagles lock in their new coach, look ahead to 2020/21 By Nick Creely There’s going to be plenty of Dandenong flavour to the Cranbourne Cricket Club in 2020/21, with the Eagles confirming the return of some of the club’s favourite sons. The Dandenong District Turf 2 club - which finished sixth on the table in 2019/20 - has locked in its senior coach and assistant, with the Sweeney boys, Pete (assistant) and Mick (head coach), set to make a return to their junior club after storied careers with Dandenong spanning almost two decades. And that’s not all for the Eagles, who have also confirmed the return of ex-Dandenong senior coach and Cranbourne champion Ross Woodall to the club in a coaching capacity, a further boost for a club looking to surge back into finals calculations. A couple of powerhouse clubs have also locked in senior coaches, with Springvale South announcing the great fast bowler Darren Arter as the Bloods’ main man, while reigning

Coomoora has also announced a new playing senior coach, with Abhinav Bhatia signing on for the Roos after a strong season with Mulgrave Wheelers Hill, while the Roos have signed Lachie Cummins and Awais Ahmed from Endeavour Hills. While on Endeavour Hills, it’s also proving to be a busy off-season period for the club, which has also locked in its senior coach and a couple of more than handy signings to go with a series of first XI players re-committing to the club. Nick Bole-Brown - a Victorian and Australian over 50s representative cricketer - has signed on as the Eagles’ coach for 2020/21, while the Eagles have also welcomed back quality seamer Chris Pereira after a strong stint with Hallam Kalora Park, where he will also captain the first XI next season. But in the club’s biggest coup so far, the Eagles have brought in quality top-order bat Austin Heldt, a former Victorian under 19 representative who has played Premier Cricket with Dandenong and Casey-South Melbourne,
where he featured in four games at first XI level. Heldt only recently captained North Dandenong in the DDCA’s tough Turf 1 competition last season and enjoyed a solid season. Premier Cricket outfit Dandenong’s preparations for next season under new coach Warren Ayres are also in full swing, with the Panthers building some more depth to their bowling ranks as well as adding a new assistant coach. Adding to the fast bowling stocks, the Panthers have snared duo James Maxwell and Jack Fowler from Casey-South Melbourne and Kingston Hawthorn respectively, while Adam McMaster has also returned to Shepley Oval after a brief stint with Melbourne, adding plenty of depth to the bowling department. And the Panthers will also welcome in DDCA legend Craig Slocombe as an assistant coach, with the great batsman retiring after an incredible career with Springvale South at the end of last season. Slocombe will link up once again with former teammate Warren Ayres.
