Trees to get chop Yarra Ranges Council has approved the removal of 11 trees at the Olinda Recreation Reserve to make way for a new netball court and cricket net upgrades.

At their council meeting on 5 April, councillors approved a Planning Application from Parks Victoria that sought to remove the vegetation, which included two large Mountain Ash trees.

The application was submitted to allow for Parks Victoria’s Olinda Precinct Project.

Carolyn Ebdon spoke on behalf of Save the Dandenongs League. She urged the council to refuse the application in order to help preserve the landscape of an “ecologically sensitive area.”

She said refusing the application would also help avoid significant disturbance of the natural landscape.

“The Olinda Recreation Reserve contains many healthy and well established Mountain Ash. It’s Australia’s tallest flowering plant as well as other mature vegetation of varying ages

“Large old trees are keystone structures of our forest, they are of great ecological importance and fulfil critical roles in our forest ecosystems.

“The fact that, globally, large old trees are in decline, we must act locally to ensure we have enough mountain giants for the future.”

She also said the removal of these trees would disrupt the viability of the nearby 117-year-old Olinda Mechanics Institute Hall.

From pain to greatness

By Romy Stephens As someone who grew up wanting to excel at everything, it could almost be said that Benji Brundin was destined to become a Guinness World Record holder.

But digging a bit deeper into Benji’s life reveals a path to greatness that was far from easy.

The former Monbulk Hawks footballer recently penned a book about his journey - from battling poverty and losing everything, to becoming the first person to cross all 10 Australian deserts solo and unsupported on a motorbike.

In Hunting Fear, he discusses hitting rock bottom before traversing some of the country’s wildest terrain.

Benji grew up in the desert region of Pilbara in Western Australia and his mother kicked his father out when he was only five-years-old.

In 1995, Benji’s mother bought the Monbulk Animal Farm, with her partner at the time, so Benji, along with his two siblings, moved to the hills.

Prior to Benji’s mother passing away at age 19 he had family issues, but things became extremely tough when he decided to take on guardianship of his younger brother.

It was during this time the Monbulk Football Club took Benji and his brother under their wing.

“When I was playing there was always someone at the club making sure my brother was okat,” Benji said.

“There really was a sense of community during that time of my life.

“That was the reason I chose to stay in Monbulk and raise my brother, because I knew it was a safe family-friendly environment to raise a child.”

Over the years, Benji managed to get on track and find himself a regular life until things took a turn for the worst in 2016.

Within the space of a few months he lost his job and promising career within the police force, his marriage broke down and with it went the family house and dog, then his father died.

But never one to give up, Benji decided it was time to completely change his life.

“When I was younger I wanted to be a special forces soldier, I wanted to be the best of the best,” he said.

“I always wanted to live an adventurous life yet I conformed to the rules of society.”

“I followed the rules and it still ended in tears. Well I thought stuff it, I’m just going to go for it.”

Aged 34, Benji took off and travelled across the country for almost 18 months with his van and motorbike - despite only having less than six months riding experience.

“I grew confidence the further I went out and the more I did,” Benji said.

“When I came back to Melbourne everything was back to normal and I wasn’t ready.

“I thought I still had more to prove I still had something to give.”

And so the idea to break a world record was born.

Benji takes a moment to enjoy his solo journey.

Benji planned a route that would take him across all ten major Australian deserts. He then completed the 7000 kilometre trek over 30 days last year.

“In those 30 days I lost close to 10kgs. I was all by myself out there and I just had a small 250CC dirt bike,” he said.

“It was really done on a shoestring budget so there was no sponsorship or big money spent.”

Benji also partnered with Black Dog Institute to raise money and spread awareness for mental health.

Since his journey, Benji has found a new outlook on life.

“I just cannot go back to my old life, too much has changed inside me,” he said.

“Now if I want to do something I’ll do it.

“Any of that negative self talk is now not even part of my vocabulary. If I want to do something I’ll just find a way.”

Today, Benji is passionate about sharing his message of self-belief with schools and workplaces.

“I want to inspire people, particularly young people, to live life with the throttle wide open,” he said.

“On the other side of gut-crippling fear lies freedom, and when you face those fears, the greatest adventures await you.”

The loss of a local icon

By Romy Stephens Emerald lost a well respected community member with the passing of Maxwell Muller last month.

Mr Muller dedicated much of his life to the community, mainly through his contribution to the local football club and CFA. He was involved with the Emerald Junior Football Club for about 10 years, as a trainer, and he also held the role of president for a period of time.

A feature of his involvement there was calling the Emerald Bingo on Thursday nights, which helped raise funds for the club.

He also went to regular meetings for the club and was often there four nights a week pumping up footballs and supporting players.

Mr Muller’s son, Stephen, said his dad was an incredible leader, particularly for kids that struggled to stay focused.

“He could see the best in everyone and bring the best out in everyone. He just had an uncanny knack at doing that.

“His amazing influence, he just seemed to know the right thing to say every time.”

Mr Muller also received his 10 year service

medal and was vice captain at the Emerald CFA. He was a firefighter there during one of the region’s most devastating fire events, Ash Wednesday.

A dedicated community member who looked to bring happiness to youth, Mr Muller also owned and ran the miniature railway, with his wife Christine, at Emerald Lake Park for about two decades.

Stephen said after his father’s passing, numerous old friends reached out to offer their condolences and memories of Mr Muller.

“They said he was a huge influence in all the best ways, there was never a bad word spoken about him which made me very proud,” Stephen said.

“I’m just highly grateful for his upbringing and what he made me...I can’t thank him enough and also the effort that he always put in with his grandchildren.

“He was a very modest man...he was a bloke who was always there but he was a quiet achiever, he used to do a lot of things that were unsung.”

Mr Muller passed away on 25 April, aged 83.

Level crossing removals at Lilydale and Mooroolbark are one step closer with site establishment now underway.

Both level crossings clog streets and put lives at risk, with 13 crashes in the past decade, one of them fatal.

More than 53,000 vehicles use the crossings each day and boom gates can be down for up to a quarter of the morning peak.

Monbulk MP James Merlino said the arrival of construction crews and site offices was an exciting moment for local residents who want both level crossings gone for good.

"I thank everyone for their feedback and contribution to the project designs," he said.

"The community said they wanted these dangerous and congested level crossings gone for good, modern stations and community spaces and that's what we're delivering."

Two new elevated stations will be built at Mooroolbark and Lilydale, and a new multideck carpark at Mooroolbark is also being built, which will see commuter parking doubling to 900 spaces.

Crews have started relocating underground services, installing temporary fencing and piecing together a 30-metre-tall piling rig in the Lilydale Station carpark.

From next week, the piling rig will dig a test pile around 22 metres into the ground to help engineers confirm the depth of the foundations for the new rail bridge over Maroondah Highway.

Major construction of the new rail bridges will begin at the end of this year.

More than 650 pieces of community feedback will be incorporated into the design of the new stations and open spaces.

In line with the majority of feedback, the project will create community spaces connected to the new stations.

Approximately 60,000 trees, plants, shrubs and grasses will be planted in a bid to maintain the existing character of the area.

These level crossing removal works are the first part of upgrades along the Belgrave and Lilydale lines.

In total, eight level crossings are being removed on the two lines.

The level crossing removal project is removing 75 level crossings by 2025, with 35 already gone.

The Mooroolbark and Lilydale level crossings will be removed in 2022.

The community will have more opportunities to learn about the project and view plans as they are developed over coming months at levelcrossings.vic.gov.au.

Retired teacher lends a helping hand

By Romy Stephens A retired teacher from Clematis is calling on other former teachers to use their skills and help struggling parents during this period of remote learning.

Former humanities teacher at Boronia Technical College Peter Cook recently dug out his pre-retirement geography class work and updated it to match the current curriculum.

He is now offering it to parents as an additional tool they can use to help teach their kids studying at home due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Mr Cook said that by spreading awareness of the idea he hoped to find more teachers that could add their expertise.

“I can only contribute in my subject areas but it would be nice to be able to offer material in all subject areas,” he said.

“I hope that from this I’ll get enquiries from retired teachers who are prepared to offer work.”

Mr Cook said he was inspired to do something after seeing reports of families struggling with remote learning.

“I just kept seeing stories in the media about people trying to hold down a job, particularly people working from home, and trying to homeschool at the same time,” Mr Cook said.

“It sounded like a really tough ask so I

House keeps connected

By Romy Stephens The Cockatoo Community House is still celebrating this year’s Neighbourhood House Week, albeit in a different form.

Neighbourhood House Week is an initiative that celebrates the role of community houses and centres in local communities.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Cockatoo Community House has been forced to take celebrations online this week.

As part of the event, the community house will gather on Zoom this Thursday 14 May for an online cuppa. It will also look to increase its social media sharing.

Cockatoo Community House coordinator Gabrielle Higgins said it’s an important week that helps recognise the inclusiveness of community houses and how they address social isolation.

“It’s a celebration of community really and the place of neighbourhood houses in the community, how they really are the glue that holds things together and connects people,” she said.

The Cockatoo Community House has also started a telephone survey to find out what the community needs during this time.

Ms Higgins said phone calls are important to ensure those who don’t have technology in their life aren’t excluded.

“We’ve found that phone calls are working really well so we’re checking in with a number of people,” she said.

“Just getting on the phone to someone helps keep people connected.”

The Cockatoo Community House’s Food is Free program is still operating and many classes, such as dance and art, have been taken online.

Counselling is also still running at the centre for young people and their families who have experienced family violence.

The Cockatoo Community House's art tutor, Donna, is now teaching via Zoom, email and phone calls.

Council’s parks crew has been busy maintaining bushland, reserves and parks, including Emerald Lake Park.

Council’s Maternal and Child Health team is providing an over-the-phone consultation service to families in the shire.

Support across the shire While the community has been spending time at home, Cardinia Shire Council has continued to deliver essential services across the shire as well as pandemic support and relief initiatives.

Parks, reserves and roads Council's parks crews have been working hard to maintain roadsides and townships, as well as bushlands, reserves and parks. Recently crews have been working on: Widening tracks at Emerald Lake Park by pruning back encroaching vegetation. These works will benefit the community by allowing free access along the walking tracks when the park reopens.

Preparing for the 2020 tree planting season.

Each year Council plants approximately 1,000 street trees throughout the shire's urban areas.

Weed control works in Manoora Reserve, Maryknoll. This reserve is just one of more than 70 bush reserves managed as part of our bushland maintenance program, which works to reduce weed cover and protect and increase biodiversity.

Council’s roads team is also hard at work with maintenance and improvement works still being carried out on the shire’s extensive road network. With 862 kilometres of unsealed roads and 670 kilometres of sealed roads across the shire, Council’s crews continue to carry out roadworks with some changes to the way they operate to ensure social distancing and increased hygiene measures.

Support for young people and families Young people across the shire can still reach out to Council’s dedicated Youth Services team while My Place youth centre is temporarily closed. Recognise dignity I am heartened to see letters concerning the plight of refugees during lockdown in this paper recently.

Whilst many of us worried about our situation due to isolation, loss of jobs, curtailed personal liberties etc incurred by Covid19 , refugees seeking asylum in Australia have been living under these conditions for years, incarcerated in various forms of detention.

Maybe now, because of our experience of uncertainty and restriction we would do well to reflect on and attempt to understand what these people are experiencing simply because they dared to flee the horrors of their own countries.

We must urge our politicians to recognise the dignity and humanity of people seeking asylum and act accordingly.

From page 1 Nick Clements from Tract Consultants spoke on behalf of Parks Victoria and said the proposed location was specifically identified within the 2017 Olinda Golf Course Precinct Plan.

“This is a document that was prepared with specific input and assistance from Council, so that goes towards answering some of the questions about the appropriateness of the specific site,” he said.

“There have been numerous design exercises that have occurred as part of the 2017 Master Plan that explored alternative locations.

“All of them were not deemed appropriate because of circumstances such as topography, greater impact on vegetation removal and also the physical separation of facilities from the current amenities that are provided within the site.”

An extensive debate was exhibited by councillors in regards to whether or not the trees, particularly the two large Mountain Ash, should be removed.

Councillors discussed issues such as the safety risk the trees posed, how the loss of carbon stored in the trees could contribute to climate change, whether alternative locations were thoroughly explored, community need for the project and more.

Cr Stevenson said the major native trees posed a safety risk as they were “squeezed on all four sides by existing infrastructure.”

“I sometimes wonder if they are fighting back here when you look at what’s happening with clear examples of limbs falling from trees that have damaged infrastructure,” he said.

“This information was provided by the clubs, they’ve put it forward because they are deeply concerned about what might happen to one of their members or any community member who might be in that space.”

Cr Clarke said he was “very disappointed” at the lack of analysis of alternative sites for an extra netball court.

Meanwhile, Cr Cliff said cutting down trees like this sets a precedent for future generations.

“We’ve got to leave a legacy for future young ones and the unborn and this is where it starts,” he said.

“We’ve got to stop this business of wanting to cut down trees without thinking. Maybe there’s an alternative way.

“At what point do we say enough is enough, show some spine, stand up and say we care for the future of the planet?”

The motion to allow for tree removal was then carried with five votes in favour and four votes against.

The Olinda Precinct Project is a $7.67 million State Government project which will transform the former Olinda Golf Course into 34 hectares of community parkland.

The first stage of the project - currently underway - will see a sports oval for junior sport and training developed on the site of the former Olinda Golf Course.

The second stage was completed in July last year and involves a new play space, outdoor cooking facilities and a new toilet block.

The final stage will replace the existing netball court with two new netball courts and refurbish the existing cricket nets.

Parks Victoria was only required to seek planning approval for the removal of vegetation.

Planning permission for buildings and works associated with the proposed facilities was not required.

As part of its Planning Application, Parks Victoria offered a voluntary revegetation plan, which would see 20 additional trees planted either within the Olinda Reserve or former Olinda Golf Course site. mailcommunity.com.au

Creating virtual music to the young musicians’ ears

By Romy Stephens An online platform has been launched to help emerging artists in the hills perform during Covid-19 restrictions.

‘Ignite Uncancelled!’ provides young musicians the chance to perform in front of a live streamed audience every Saturday.

It has been developed by the directors of Ignite Youth Festival, a music festival for all ages with performers under the age of 21.

Festival co-director Blaise Cosme said the idea was inspired after the postponement of PAVE festival earlier this year.

“We were scheduled to run an outdoor youth stage at the PAVE festival in March which had to be postponed once the Covid-19 pandemic was declared,” he said.

“We began to explore ideas for creating online events for emerging artists and developing opportunities to perform via live streams.”

Blaise said he worked with the Emerald Community House’s Phil Byers - who is also a Ignite Youth Festival co-director - to get the initiative underway.

The pair set up a remote studio at the Emerald Community House, to connect multiple streaming video sources, bringing artists together into a single live stream.

The first event took place on 25 April and featured local artists Hannah Schmidli and Lili-Violet.

Blaise said the event was a huge success.

“It’s amazing, we’ve never had this many people at an event for Ignite and we’ve only heard positive things,” he said.

He said he hoped to make the Saturday live streamed sessions a permanent event, even after restrictions are lessened.

“Instead of doing the whole remote thing, we will build a studio and bring the artists in and run more of a live production,” Blaise said.

“If that goes really well we might continue this for a long time.”

The next two live streaming sessions will see Jazmin Micallef and Ayden Gadsden perform on 9 May and Bo’Ness and Jasmine Scholz perform on 16 May. Blaise said it is a more important time then ever for young artists to practise their skills.

“People like it and for a lot of the artists it keeps them happy,” he said.

“Many of them don’t have any gigs at the moment so we’re creating the opportunity for the younger artists.

“The young local artists are really limited as to what they can do with the equipment they have or the resources they have.

“We’re really creating the opportunity for them to play in front of an audience even if it’s virtual.”

Supporting with meals

By Romy Stephens The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group has donated $5000 to local organisations that have been providing meals and services to the community during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dandenongs Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRES) and Foothills Community Care received $2500 each to go towards their services.

Foothills Community Care distributes about 9000 free meals every year. It does this through its sit down meals at Upwey (Monday nights) and Ferntree Gully (Wednesday nights) and its Community Casseroles initiative in Upwey.

CEO Stephen Barrington said the demand for meals had tripled since pandemic restrictions began.

“We were absolutely thrilled to be contacted by the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group recently and to be offered a generous donation towards our community meals programs,” he said.

“Since restrictions commenced, the meals that we have distributed have gone from around 200 a week to over 600.

“We have been so encouraged to have a generous community around us, prepared to pitch in and support others in need at this time.“ DRES is a non-profit organisation that aims to connect the community and support people experiencing financial stress, crisis and hardship.

CEO Tania Bevan said it was a “lovely surprise” to receive the donation.

A Chirnside Park woman has declared she is feeling ‘so alive’ after watching her numbers come up in last night’s Lotto draw, scoring her a division one prize of $1 million.

The Victorian player held one of the two division one winning entries across Australia in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 3970, drawn Monday 4 May 2020. They each take home a division one prize of $1 million.

As well as winning the coveted division one prize, the winner’s System 8 entry also scored her division three 12 times and division four 15 times, bolstering her total prize to $1,006,218.85.

When an official from the Lott called the woman this morning to confirm the win, she revealed she had watched her winning numbers come out of the barrel.

“I’m very excited, Thank you so much,” she said.

“I always watch the draw every night on TV and when I watched it last night, I was circling each number as it came up on the screen.

“I knew I had all the numbers as they were coming out. I play them every week.

“I always play hoping I’ll win some day and my favourite part is watching the draw. It’s so exciting.

“It’s just marvellous to win. I feel so alive.”

When asked how she planned to celebrate her million-dollar prize, the delighted woman revealed she had not had much sleep after her winning discovery.

“I couldn’t sleep all night after watching the draw,” she explained.

“It’s hard to go out and do anything at the moment so instead I think I’ll celebrate by having a nap knowing that the win has been confirmed.”

The happy winner revealed she knew exactly how she would spend her windfall.

“I’m going to buy my house,” she declared immediately.

“I’ve been renting here for 20 years and I never want to leave so I’m going to put an offer in and buy it.

With the increased numbers of people working from home or remotely from their normal workplace, CFA is warning of the potential for an increase in structural fires.

Deputy chief officer Trevor Owen said using faulty or damaged electrical equipment could result an increased risk of fire at home.

He said people should ensure their appliances were in good condition before plugging them in.

“People need to remember that when electrical appliances are left on for an extended period of time they could overheat and have disastrous effects,” he said.

“We are urging residents to check their electrical appliances including computers and televisions which are more readily used in home at present. Check you’re not overloading power boards or have loose cables, ensure monitors, laptops, televisions and other equipment have a good air flow around them and are not in confined spaces or covered.

“Make sure you turn off electrical appliances before going to bed. When leaving your home unattended it is best to unplug your electrical appliances.

“I can’t begin to tell you how great it felt to escape lockdown for a few hours and be chauffeured around in the sunshine while I took videos for work,“ he said.

“While it was eerie to see the place so quiet, it was still amazing. This will sound weird but, its good to know she’s still there, and not grey and decayed or collapsing like a scene from ’I am Legend’, but bright - warm - welcoming inviting - just waiting to give you a hug again.

“When this Covid thing is over, we will pick ourselves up, fill these streets, dance, party, hug, sing and celebrate again - and wake her back up, and give her life again. That’ll be a good day.“

Basketball’s Covid plan

By Russell Bennett The Victorian basketball community is fighting desperately to save the grassroots game, in the wake of the greatest threat to sport in Australian history - Covid-19.

Following the postponement of basketball across the state from 13 March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the game has taken a huge hit - and not just in the professional leagues and international competitions that have been left devastated.

In Victoria alone, about 420,000 basketball participants stopped playing in the space of a day around six weeks ago.

With 240,000 registered members this year, on top of another 180,000 casual participants throughout the state, basketball is the largest community sport in Victoria and the rate it's increasing is actually faster than population growth.

The National Cabinet outlined its 15 principles for the staged return of sport and recreation activities recently and Basketball Victoria is working in tandem with the Victorian State Government to seek clarity on timelines and solutions for potential barriers to the resumption of play.

Basketball Victoria has prepared 'Return to Sport' guidelines in conjunction with local member associations and advice from Basketball Australia and its chief medical officer.

The guidelines refer to various levels of risk management to enable players to get back on the court, including: the flow of traffic in and out of venues, time restrictions, compulsory cleaning, sanitisation and restrictions on players, officials and parents per court.

Basketball Victoria is confident that, given stadiums are large volume spaces where the number of people can be strictly managed,

Basketball organisations have a large footprint across the state, including the leasing

and hiring of court-space from every Victorian council municipality - with 465 indoor facilities and over 1000 courts being used regularly throughout the year.

As an indoor sport, Basketball has the potential to have longer-term exposure to the

economic side-effects of Covid-19, and will be impacted more severely by the specific classification of indoor sporting venues - including community and recreation centres - and restrictions by the State and Federal Governments than any other major sporting code.

Australian Opals' Captain, and star of the WNBL's Southside Flyers, Jenna O'Hea said it's important for teams to get back on the court for social connections and lifting spirits to improve wellbeing.

"I think routine, and having places to be and keeping busy, is good for our mental health, so getting back on the court and into regular trainings and commitments is important whenever it is safe to do so."

O'Hea's motivation has been a bit of a roller coaster during this social distancing period of Covid-19.

Not knowing when we she will be back training, let alone playing, it has been hard to keep training at a high intensity like she normally would during a season.

O'Hea has been staying active by doing things she enjoys, such as bike riding, and running with her dog, as well as ball handling skills and drills to stay sharp and active. She encourages the community to do the same.

"I'm a mental health advocate (O'Hea won the 2019 AIS Athlete Community Engagement Award as a Lifeline Community Custodian) and situations like this can have serious implications on our mental health," she explained.

"I know that I love basketball and can't wait until I can get back with my teammates, competing and improving our skills together again.

"I would encourage all hoopers to do things you enjoy - keep a ball in your hands during this time and be ready to go whenever we do get the all clear."
