By Luke Voogt Geelong mums are leading eforts to feed the homeless and unemployed as the COVID-19 pandemic forces some local charities to close their doors. Newtown mother-of-two and teacher Leah Irving has a secret weapon in the battle against hunger – the humble BLT sanga. “It’s usually what we send the kids to school with,” the 45-year-old said. Leah showed of a makeshit sandwich production line in her kitchen on her new Facebook page: GUber Streets GEELONG. “I’m used to volunteering and making people food in a hygienic way,” she said. She and her daughter Indigo delivered the sandwiches to the homeless in central Geelong several times in the past fortnight, she said. “hey said I’d ‘gone gourmet’ when I dropped them of – they appreciated something fresh and diferent. “he reaction from the people that we helped was, even more importantly than getting a feed, is that people hadn’t forgotten them.” “hey’re very courteous and only take what they need – they go get their friends to make sure they get what they need too. “I’m tipping they’re not on email all the time. hey’ve got limited access to media so they’re oten the last to know what’s happening. “But they’re practicing social distancing and looking out for each other, as much as I could gather talking
to them from the car.” On Wednesday she delivered sandwiches to Lazarus Community Centre, which she said closed its doors later that day because of the pandemic. Leah has now started delivering food to Geelong West charity OneCare, which remained open yesterday. She said taking up the cause during the school holidays had given her purpose and helped her reconnect with her kids. “I just thought we’d put it out there and see if we couldn’t help some people.” Dozens had joined the efort, from colleagues and retired teachers to elderly neighbours dropping of slices, muins and cookies on the front porch, Leah said. Armstrong Creek mother-of-two Lauren Betts has also joined local eforts, distributing donated food to people in need. “I woke up this morning and there were boxes out the front of my house,” the 39-year-old said. “I’ve hit 500 items and they just keep rolling in.” Lauren has been distributing the food from dozens of donors to about 40 households who have lost employment or are otherwise struggling. “hey’re not being greedy; they’re just taking what they need,” she said. “here’s also a couple of grandmothers that are looking ater their grandkids because their parents are nurses.” Both Leah and Lauren described those who had signed up to help as amazing. “People just want to help,” Lauren said.

Brothel ined as virus cases rise By Luke Voogt A Belmont brothel has been ined almost $10,000 for louting social distancing laws as Geelong’s COVID-19 tally reached 50 yesterday. “It astounds me,” Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton told a press conference. “We were called there, to this brothel, because the street was that busy at one stage it became a traic jam. “hat is absolutely insane in this current environment.”
Police shut the brothel and issued an escort with an additional ine, Deputy Commissioner Patton said. Meanwhile, two Geelong employees, one at NDIA’s CBD headquarters and another at Faggs Mitre 10, have tested positive for coronavirus. he NDIA staf member received a positive test result while in self-isolation ater being in close contact with someone who returned from overseas, a spokesperson said. NDIA closed and cleaned the staf member’s workplace and directed all employees who had

Fruit and veg powers jobs A program sending fresh fruit and vegetables across Geelong is keeping more than 100 people with disabilities, like Adrian Smith, working through the coronavirus pandemic. he 49-year-old from Geelong, who is blind, works in the vegetable processing area of genU’s “much-needed” program. “It’s about trying to keep things as normal as possible,” he said. “If I wasn’t working I’d be stuck at home all day. It gives me that time to get out, go to work and try and keep life as normal as possible.” Adrian enjoys preparing pumpkins, carrots, onions, beans, beetroot or “whatever’s being prepared for that day” but, most of all, he loves the social side. “Especially with everything that’s going on at the moment,” he said. “I’m pretty social, my wife June and I go out a couple of nights a week for dinner, I catch up with my mates at the pub. “So that’s all stopped now – there’s going to

City Hall made the “dificult decision” in line with state and federal directions, according to chief executive oficer Martin Cutter. Couple homebound An elderly Highton couple, who the Independent last week revealed were stranded on a cruise ship off Uruguay during the coronavirus pandemic, are set to return to Australia. David and Estelle Cameron, in their 70s, were set to board a chartered light and arrive in Sydney this morning before self-isolating at a hotel, their daughter Janelle Lee-Cameron said.

Camping out in a crisis Shane King went camping in the backyard to keep his three girls entertained, as coronavirus restrictions tightened this week. He’s one of hundreds of parents around Geelong inding innovative ways to keep kids entertained during social distancing rules. Putting up the tent for Zara, 6, Grace, 3, and Olivia, 15 months, was partly “self-motivated”, the Bell Park real estate agent admitted. “I just wanted to get them out of the house so I could work with a bit of peace and quiet,” he laughed. “It’s easier having them playing in the tent than to do video calls to the oice with the kids on my knee.” Camping was just one of the activities Shane had devised for his girls – so far they’ve made Easter hats and painted a new planter box.
Keeping his “active” kids entertained without resorting to a screen could be challenging, he said. “All things considered, they’re coping really well – kids are pretty resilient – but they are complaining about being bored.” He said the kids were frustrated they could not visit their grandparents, his partner Dana’s elderly parents, who live ive minutes down the road. Shane and Dana had stopped by to drop of supplies and check on her parents, staying outside the house to keep them safe, he said. Shane said he was lucky he has been able to continue working for Harcourts North Geelong from home.

Geelong locals stranded in Peru By Luke Voogt Two Geelong men are among hundreds of Australians stranded in Peru by the COVID-19 pandemic as their families seek desperately to bring them home. Highton’s Jacob Welsh, 24, was stranded in a hostel in Lima with Corio friend Connor Cooke, 23, his mother Nicola Welsh said. “It would be good to have him home,” Nicola said. “He sounds OK – bored – but that’s like the rest of the world. “But I don’t want that to change and suddenly feel like I can’t help because I’ve let it too late.”
More than 400 Australians were in Peru when president Martín Vizcarra announced a border lockdown on March 15, according to an open letter to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, published on March 28 on behalf of those stranded. Australians had just 27 hours to organise safe passage from Peru before its borders shut. he few charter lights available cost more than $5000. he letter stated that most travellers who are now stranded had let Australia for South America when there were few COVID-19 cases and neither Smartraveller nor the Department
of Foreign Afairs and Trade (DFAT) were warning ‘do not travel’. “When Jacob and Connor let on [March 1] the severity and implications of COVID-19 were not clear,” Ms Welsh said. “Only over the last few weeks the world as we know it has changed and the enormity of what we’re all facing [has] become evident.“ Ms Welsh described Jacob as “very well-travelled” saying he had been to “far more remote communities”. “He thinks there’s plenty of people worse of than him, so he thinks he’s not the priority.” He and Connor were sleeping a lot and eating
less due to a lack of activity, and walking once a day while abiding by Peru’s current curfews, Ms Welsh said. She urged DFAT to provide more information to those stranded. “[Jacob] has only just received his irst email from the embassy yesterday,” she said. “Infrequent tweets on social media saying ‘we’re working on it’ do not suice as communication.” But she acknowledged the eforts of Corio MP Richard Marles’ oice in communicating with families and advocating for all locals currently overseas.
Hats help in virus ight Victorian nurses on the front line of the ight against COVID-19 are getting a little extra help from self-isolated Anglesea retiree Deb Elliot. Deb is co-ordinating Helping our Hospital Heroes Australia, encouraging people to make hats for nurses to wear while at work. “We’ve delivered 500 so far of 1000 we’ve committed to Royal Melbourne Hospital,” the 66-year-old said. Her Facebook page had attracted more than 300 members since she set it up last hursday. “It’s gone exponential,” she said. “People have done their initial ten [hats] and have come back and asked, ‘can I do more?’” Deb said the initiative gave people who are feeling “frightened” and “helpless” a chance to help health professionals ight the coronavirus. She said co-ordinating the eforts gave her similar “purpose” during her precautionary self-isolation and was the “perfect” use of her

Central Geelong businesses doing things differently Central Geelong businesses have quickly adapted their products and services over recent weeks as the COVID-19 pandemic develops. here are ways the Geelong community can show their support for local businesses during these unprecedented times. Many restaurants and cafes have been able to switch to alternate delivery or pick-up methods, carving out new niches and gaining new customers by preparing meals to heat and eat at home. ALMA at Home, Caruggi, Mavs, Pizzeria Adamo, Workers Geelong, Ebony & Ivory and Rook are just some of the fantastic eateries that have adapted their meal options for customers while ensuring social distancing is supported. Black Bull Tapas Bar and Restaurant’s head chef Daniel is preparing fresh pasta and trays of lasagne, with an expanded range of take-home meals to meet customer demands. Yarra Street Quartermaster’s regular ofer of two-lane drive-through groceries, cofee and wine was well positioned to service the changing needs of customers over recent weeks. he Fresh Food Merchant in Malop Street is stocked up on fruit and vegetables, deli goods, seafood and groceries – many from local producers – and has begun ofering three ways to shop – in-store, order & collect and delivery. Many professional service businesses have moved online, ensuring customers can still access their services with one-on-one remote consultations or over the phone expert advice. Pace Advertising has been helping other businesses change their service delivery from physical shop-fronts to ‘online-only’ models. An underground society of homemade cheese and smallgoods producers is springing up across Geelong, but it’s nothing new for Tony Poje. “It’s a family tradition – we’ve been doing it all our lives,” the 66-year-old Lara grandfather and Croatian expat said. Tony won the Lara Food and Wine Festival’s Hamstar competition for the second time last month with his delicious prosciutto. “It felt great to win, I went into a fair bit of preparation to make it,” he said. “It takes about eight months to cure it – I just hang it up in the carport.” Tony learnt how to cure meat while growing up on his family’s farm in Croatia, before they migrated to Australia in 1970 when he was 16. he family would slaughter a pig every winter, he said. “I just followed my dad, from father to son.” For 35 years Tony has worked at a local wire mill and some of his workmates also make smallgoods. But across Geelong many, like Debbie Baldwinson, have only recently taken up the hobby of producing food from home. he retired Navy cook and restaurant chef has been making cheese for the past three years in her East Geelong kitchen. “It’s a little bit addictive,” the 63-year-old said. “When you make homemade cheese it’s really hard to go back to shop-bought.” Debbie won three categories in the Lara Food and Wine Festival’s Cheese Champion and makes dozens of varieties using unhomogenised goats’ and cows’ milk. “I had enough cheese before even this [COVID-19] virus came out to last me for 12 months, because it just gets better with age,” she
