A big believer in small businesses, Mr Macdonald says there needs to be more support for them.

The aim of the initiative is for small local businesses to gain combined marketing power, increase brand awareness and gain another stream of revenue they might not have had previously.

“It brings people together. The current situation with the coronavirus has only highlighted the need,” he added.

“The response so far has been extremely positive.”

Once the project officially launches, the community can become involved through social media, and by heading into the participating businesses where they’ll be able to purchase the gift cards for any amount between $10 and $1000.

“Gift cards are a great way to increase customer loyalty and strengthen community en-

gagement,” he said.

If they are hurting from the effects of the coronavirus, the gift cards will aid in the speed of their recovery.”

Ms Day believes the role for local businesses in the community is to deliver an experience that makes the community want to look no further.

“In this current landscape, that means looking into innovations such as selling their goods or services online and yes, sometimes that’s difficult,” she explained.

“However, it warms my heart to see so many businesses giving innovation a crack and so many locals taking up the opportunity to support them.”

In an attempt to adapt to this new and everevolving situation, community advocates, Ben Macdonald and Aileen Day, are in the process of rolling out an initiative that will ultimately help local businesses that are currently suffering.

The project will allow Cardinia shire businesses to become online members and customers can use specialised gift cards to shop locally through any business signed up whether that shop is built for online shopping or not.

Star News Group’s ‘Shop Local’ campaign, which was recently launched, has the same intention - helping to keep local businesses afloat.

President missing

By Mitchell Clarke The search for missing Pakenham CWA president Carol Clay continues in Gippsland.

Police believe the 73-year-old left her house on 19 March to go on a “touring trip” with camping companion, Russell Hill, 74. She was expected to return no later than 29 March but has failed to contact loved ones since 20 March.

Mr Hill’s car was located with Ms Clay’s possessions next to a burnt out campsite at the Dry River Creek Track at Billabong on 27 March.

A team of 30 searchers continue to look for the pair in the Wonnangatta Valley.

Firearm ban pain the Covid-19 issue, but I feel that is not the motivation as it is full of inconsistencies,” he explained.

“If that was the motivation, all non essential retail should have to close, but they are not.

Also, why would a firearm and ammo be non essential but scopes and gun bags are?”

Those with a need to access firearms and ammunition for essential services, like farmers and rural landholders, professional vermin control and armed guards will still be able to access the products for these purposes.

“They make up a small percent of my sales,” Mr Burke added.

“My most common customers would be hunters then target shooters. There are some primary producers too.

“I can sell accessories but most people buy accessories when they buy guns. Usually they buy a scope and a gun bag when they pick up the gun.”

Mr Burke said his business weren’t prepared for the announcement and only found out through Facebook before later receiving an email from Victoria Police’s Licensing and Regulation Division.

“The lack of foresight was a big problem because I had only just put in orders to my wholesalers to restock on guns and ammo ... which I now cannot sell,” Mr Burke said.

“I’ll lose probably 80 percent (of business) ... and if that is the case I will probably close for the moment and reopen when this blows over.”

A Pakenham firearm dealer expects to lose 80 percent of business, following the State Government’s decision to temporarily ban the sale of firearms and ammunition.

The decision to ban sporting and recreational firearm sales on Tuesday 31 March was made following an increase in permits to acquire applications and additional ammunition.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said the ban would remain in place for the duration of the Covid-19 outbreak to prevent stockpiling and reduce the risk of firearms and ammunition falling into criminal hands.

“We’re responding to an increase in de-

mand for firearms and ammunition across the country by doing what we can to protect licensed firearm owners and dealers as well as the broader community,” Ms Neville said.

Pakenham Firearms owner Michael Burke said he hadn’t noticed the increased demand.“I have not seen an unusual quantity purchases of firearms being sold,” Mr Burke said.

“I have heard it is because of people mass purchasing guns and ammo, so maybe there is some sort of public order motivation? But I have not seen mass purchasing in my store.”

The dealer, which only opened in early March, hadn’t been affected by the coronavirus, until this announcement.

Crossing works kick off

The Cardinia Road level crossing is scheduled to be removed by by 2021, and the three crossings at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road will be removed by 2025.

Geotechnical investigations, which started in late March at Racecourse Road, will see 100mm wide and 40 metre deep holes drilled along the rail corridor between Racecourse Road and McGregor Road.

It’s anticipated the investigations will provide information about ground conditions at the site - informing the final design of the project and how it will be constructed.

“These Geotech investigations are a welcomed start to what will be a big project with massive benefits to our community and commuters,“ Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said.

The McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road level crossings will all be removed by raising the rail line over the road in a major project to boost safety and abolish congestion.

Combined with the Metro Tunnel and new trains, the Pakenham level crossing removals will help make space for 121,000 extra peak hour passengers a week on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

Boom gates in Pakenham can be down for up to 30 percent of the morning peak, with up to 23 trains running through the crossings.

A new “superstation” will also be built at Pakenham which aims to improve access for the growing number of commuters.

Meanwhile, works to remove the Cardinia Road level crossing are continuing, despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Work is continuing on all of Victoria’s major transport infrastructure projects,” a government spokesperson said.

“Major Transport Infrastructure Authority (MTIA) has a comprehensive protocol in place to manage the potential spread and exposure risks of coronavirus.

Life on temporary pause

By Jonathan Mcquie As school holidays began a week early, and children were forced to stay at home for the duration of the holiday period, their teachers have also had to do the same.

Andy Ewan of Pakenham East has been in self-isolation since the holidays began on Tuesday 24 March, however, his role as a teacher isn’t the only reason he’s isolating.

Mr Ewan also has an aggressive coronary heart disease, meaning he’s in the high-risk category for coronavirus.

“If I get the flu or the coronavirus, it would potentially end me because of the strain this puts on the heart and lungs, so it’s really not something I want to get, as well as something I don’t want to pass around to anyone else.”

During his time in isolation, Mr Ewan’s spent time finding teaching materials to share on his Facebook page, along with walking and exercising to strengthen his heart muscles.

While Mr Ewan describes himself as reclusive by nature, he’s been unable to see his children and grandkids, however he believes isolation is thoroughly worthwhile.

“I have two grandchildren being born this year and I want to meet them one day.”

At the shops and in his peer groups, Mr Ewan’s seen many people ignoring social distancing, giving him significant frustration.

“You may not be in physically close contact, but you’re still potentially spreading the virus.

Stay at home. Don’t go out.”

Attempted murder charge following chase Hunt for driver after hit-run

Police have shot a man who allegedly threatened them with knives following a dramatic pursuit which came to an end in Pakenham Upper.

When approached by police, the 35-yearold man, allegedly got out of the vehicle and threatened officers while armed with knives.

Victoria Police say officers were initially investigating a serious assault which occurred at a property in Endeavour Hills about 3pm on Wednesday 25 March.

Almost six hours later, just before 9pm, police spotted a yellow Hyundai in Narre Warren, which was believed to be connected to the same incident.

Witnesses had reported that vehicle driving erratically, at speed and on the wrong side of some roads.

The vehicle was later seen driving through surrounding suburbs including Emerald and Cockatoo before a pursuit of the car began just after 9pm, police say.

As the vehicle was pursued along Pakenham Road, police deployed stop sticks and were able to bring the chase to a halt.

It’s understood the man got out of his vehicle when he was approached by officers, allegedly threatening them while armed.

As per protocol, the incident was also overseen by the Professional Standards Command.

A hit-run driver is wanted by police after he allegedly hit a 66-year-old woman in Officer.

The Officer woman was walking through the Arena Shopping Centre carpark just after 4pm on Thursday 26 March when she was struck.

A man, perceived to be in his 50s, was driving an older model silver coloured Holden or Ford sedan is believed to have hit the woman.

Investigators from the Pakenham police station believe the man briefly stopped but didn’t attempt to render assistance before leaving the scene.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man was perceived to be caucasian and had a long grey beard with shoulder length, grey frizzy hair.

Government must act now The Public Interest Journalism Initiative (PIJI) is calling on the Federal Government to put in place emergency measures to save the country’s news industry at a time that so clearly demonstrates its role in Australia’s emergency infrastructure.

Stretched news organisations, services the government has itself named as essential, are being put under further stress as advertisers in key sectors like tourism, aviation, sport and entertainment slash their spending in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The reduction in advertising budgets has hit all media operations hard, especially already-struggling local and regional publishers.

PIJI wants to work with the Federal Government to take the following steps to support public interest journalism in Australia as a matter of crucial urgency: To immediately release current funds in the government’s Regional and Small Publishers Jobs and Innovation Package - thought to be around $40 million, and add an additional $60 million.

Make local news subscriptions tax deductible as a temporary supportive measure during the pandemic crisis Grant temporary relief on license fees to broadcast media and ease content obligations.

Increase public-service advertising in local news media over the next three months by at least $100 million .

Earmark further funding to assist a national newswire to provide public interest reporting.

“Measures taken by the Federal Government, such as cash injections for small business are a great start, as is payroll tax relief being offered by State Governments,“ said PIJI chairman Professor Allan Fels.

“It is clear ministers are working as quickly

The Federal Government promoted this local and regional media support package in 2017. as possible to inject much-needed stimulus into the economy.

“But given the inherent public interest in maintaining a healthy news sector, we are asking the government to urgently look at stimulus measures to keep public interest journalism alive.

“The sector was already struggling under the weight of a broken revenue model - unless we act now, there will be little news infrastructure left to save.“

Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency.

Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course.

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training.

She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated.

"I still owe everything to having those skills," she said.

"The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers.

"It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared."

The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham.

Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries.

Hearts to help

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east.

Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency.

In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities.

Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances.

Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old.

She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible.

"I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said.

"Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives.

"I love what I do - waking up and making a difference."

Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant.

News readership and subscriptions have spiked in the midst of the economic and health crises, News Corp alone saw a 48 per cent increase in total audience across all metro and regional titles and subscriptions rose by 21 per cent when compared with the same week last year.

But this week alone has seen the closure of several regional newspapers (Sunraysia Daily, Sunraysia Life, Swan Hill Guardian, Gannawarra Times and Loddon Times), while News Corp is flagging more redundancies across its national operation. Buzzfeed will slash staff pay by up to 25 per cent, Southern Cross extended a trading halt on its shares as it assesses the effect the pandemic will have on its business. Last week Seven downgraded the profit guidance for its half-year earnings. The Saturday Paper and The Monthly report they have lost “almost all their advertising revenue“ in the fallout of the crisis.

Last month the sector was put on notice that AAP will close in June. While it has since emerged that AAP is now in talks with potential buyers, if the closure goes ahead it will be yet another devastating blow to news operations across the country, especially regional and local operators.

Star News Group’s managing director Paul Thomas this week indicated the situation was dire for local and regional media companies.

“The Great Southern Star after 130 years of publishing, the Sunraysia Daily in Mildura, Swan Hill Guardian and the Gannawarra Times have all announced closures this week.

“Our company, Star News Group, employs approximately 150 people and has 20 news media mastheads, including Pakenham, Geelong, Healesville, Wyndham, Ocean Grove, Warwick and Noosa. We also have numerous news websites and specialty publications across Victoria and Queensland. But sadly I’ve had to stand down numerous staff this week.

“Our company was started in 1909 by my great-grandfather. We have survived the 1930s depression and both World Wars, yet are now suffering significant financial losses and likely to close within weeks without drastic action.

The compromises insisted on by the crossbench included the establishment of a $60.4 million fund to assist small and regional publishers consisting of: A Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund (funding of $50.1 million).

A cadetship program to support 200 cadetships ($8.0 million).

And 60 regional journalism scholarships ($2.4 million over three years).

Mr Thomas said the fund was agreed to ‘assist smaller publishers and foster diversity’. Yet an estimated $40 million remained unallocated and locked away. All funding was meant to have been allocated by June 2020.

“Local independent publishers bind communities, provide a voice and platform for the community,“ Mr Thomas said.

“Local publishers provide unique content and are a vital part of our community.

“It seems the Federal Government is now intent on allowing Independent publishers to fail so this country is left with just a handful of corporate giants with no interest in their communities.

“The Federal Government needs to unlock the $40 million now and divert it to a survival fund for regional and community independent publishers.“

Body found after blaze

By Brendan Rees A body has been found after a house went up in flames in Narre Warren on Saturday 28 March.

Emergency services were called to Linlithgow Court about 3.30am.

Fire crews from Hallam and Narre Warren brought the blaze under control in just over half-an-hour before the body was found inside the burnt-out house.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the fire and death are yet to be determined," Senior Constable Adam West said.

Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, firefighters responded to a shed fire in Pearcedale on Noaki Street about 10.30pm on Saturday, 28 March.

About 30 firefighters were on scene after neighbours reportedly heard a loud bang which "shook" their homes and "rattled windows".

A convoy of fire trucks from Pearcedale, Baxter, Somerville, Cranbourne, Devon Meadows, and Tyabb helped bring the blaze under control within an hour.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a burn-off at the property which spread to the shed - where about 30 hay bales went up in flames.

There were no reported injuries.

The loud bang was heard as far as Warneet and Somerville - and is believed to have been the result of acetylene bottle (a compressed gas) exploding in the 20 by 20 metre shed.

"The owner had been doing some burning off," Pearcedale CFA firefighter Robyn Murphy said. "Obviously something heated up near their shed and the oxy-bottle exploded."

Large trees with exposed roots had also caught fire on the property - which had proven difficult for firefighters to access, Ms Murphy said.

"We had to slash our way through some blackberries and other vegetation to get to the back of the trees which backed on to a dam," she said.

Ms Murphy said fire crews initially had trouble getting to the scene of the blaze as onlookers blocked their path.

"They actually had traffic congestion in the dirt road; they had people in front of them that wouldn't or couldn't get out of the way and people behind them - even though they've got their sirens on."

"It took a little while to find it because there was no fire when it first went up after the bang so it was about 10 minutes finding where it actually was."

Crews had also returned the following morning, where they stayed until 11.40am, pulling out and dispersing the burnt-out hay to prevent further smouldering.

CFA had issued a safety message to residents at the time, warning people of the fire, which said there was no threat to the community.

The fire had not threaten the owner's home or other neighbouring properties.

Anyone with information in relation the Narre Warren fire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.

By Brendan Rees As musicians try to weather the coronavirus storm, a Lynbrook man has found a way for talented voices to still be heard.

At at time where people hunkered down at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Scott Watson decided to create a livestream Facebook concert to support local music artists while keeping people entertained at their homes.

Through the Facebook group 'Friday Night @ Home,' which has attracted more than 1000 followers, viewers tuned in on Friday night, 27 March to watch the first act perform, a duo called 'Twice Shy' featuring Josh Tooth and Rachel Chetcuti, which resulted in more than 200 tickets being sold on the night.

"It's gathering a bit of speed which is awesome," Mr Watson said, who is also president of the Lynbrook Residents Association.

Followers are encouraged to buy a ticket for $2 plus a 50 cent booking fee through TryBook-

ing - however people are still able to view concerts on the Facebook page without a fee.

"Obviously we're relying on people to do the right thing," he said, as all proceeds of ticket sales (minus the booking fee) go towards the artists during this difficult time.

Mr Watson, who works in major events, said: "We have a few acts lined up. I don't think there will be any shortage of talent which is awesome."

Through the livestream, people can comment and interact with the musicians as well as other viewers.

Last Friday, viewers posted photos on the Facebook page of the concert hooked up to their TVs while kicking back on their couches and enjoying the fun.

Mr Watson said the idea came about after speaking to a mate to get the community together.

"If it gets really popular maybe we'll make it Saturday night as well."

Fans of Pakenham's Vista Cafe can now enjoy professionally cooked meals at home thanks to the cafe's new delivery service.

The popular Lakeside Cafe was forced to shut its doors earlier this month when the Federal Government ordered all cafes and restaurants to cease dine-in service. Owner Adam Khan said he decided to shut the cafe completely at that time out of respect for public safety.

Alpaca mauled in attack

By Brendan Rees The heartbroken owners of an alpaca have told of their distress after finding their beloved animal mauled in what's suspected to be a dog attack.

The owners, who have asked not to be named, had been out for the morning on Monday 24 February when the unspeakable happened at their Narre Warren North home their 11-year-old alpaca had been left for dead with horrific facial injuries at their McKenzie Lane property.

It was only when the owner's husband had arrived home about 12 noon that he learned of the animal's distressed state through a concerned neighbour.

He hurried to the vet before calling his wife to return home to comfort their much-loved alpaca named Beau.

But what she saw next would be one of the most "absolutely horrible" experiences she's encountered.

"I just couldn't believe it," she said, as she discovered Beau lying on the ground - "nudging the grass with his face, possibly trying to get water".

"He could not open his mouth, and was not able to breathe properly."

Sadly, Beau had to be put down, however his companion, Bruno, another alpaca on the property - escaped unscathed.

Casey Council has confirmed it was investigating the incident and are appealing to witnesses for help.

"Investigating officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the event, in particular the owners of a white American Staffordshire Terrier seen in the vicinity of Kalora Park Reserve, Narre Warren North, on the day of the attack," Casey Council manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said.

Still struggling with the loss after five weeks,

The owners have viewed footage from a neighbour's CCTV camera which captured a woman initially wandering around with two dogs at Kalora Park - an off-the-leash park that abuts their property.

The dogs, the owner said, did not appear to be under "control" for "some of the time" by their owner.

"It all looks OK for a while then all of a sudden these dogs run between the pens and come running towards (the neighbour's) properties," the owner said.

"The biggest one - which is mainly a white dog - sort of crouches down. Has he seen something of interest?"

Picture: CONTRIBUTED According to the owner, the footage later allegedly showed a man getting out of a car on McKenzie Lane carrying two dog leads - "but he has no dogs" - until he's later seen with the woman in the park before they walk off together with the dogs on leads.

The couple have taken photos of Beau's injuries including blood that had splattered on a nearby shed which has been handed to council.

Unfortunately, the couple say they are frustrated with council's response which they have described as "contemptuous" - and added more pain to their heartache."l do believe that if a child had been savagely attacked or killed this footage would not have been dismissed as worthless," the owner said.

Thief steals mum’s wallet

By Brendan Rees A mum of three has told of her shock after a heartless thief snatched her wallet from her pram as she shopped at a Coles supermarket in Narre Warren.

Rhiannon Johnston, 26, said she had been looking at the shelves when a man swiped her wallet from a cup holder on the top of her pram at the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre supermarket about 10.30am on Friday 27 March.

"I saw his hand slide over. He literally grabbed it and slid it into his basket and started to walk away," she said.

"I turned around and yelled out: 'Oi, that's my wallet' and he just dropped the basket on the ground and proceeded to walk out."

Ms Johnston, who had her 18-month-old daughter in the pram and eight-year-old son next to her, raised the alarm with security.

At this point, Ms Johnston said she picked up the basket containing her wallet and a carton of milk, before continuing to yell out to the man in front of stunned onlookers.

The man had managed to leave the shopping centre but was apprehended by security shortly after.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed police were investigating the incident and a 34-year-old man from Dandenong had been arrested.

He has been charged with theft and had been released pending summons and will appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Still reeling from the ordeal, Ms Johnston said she hoped by sharing her story she would not only call out the man's behaviour but prevent further incidents from happening, particularly in a time of crisis.

"I was really caught off guard," she said. "I can't imagine how many old people are falling victim."

A thief has been arrested after stealing a wallet from a cup holder of a mother's pram at a Coles supermarket.

"I didn't get a really good look at his face because he literally walked past, grabbed it and kept walking."The way he was acting, was like he's done it before because he was very casual," she said.

She said her son was shaken by the incident but had managed to help police by provid-

Ms Johnston said she felt "silly" for placing her wallet on top of her pram but would be "very careful" in the future.

Council bans food market

By Brendan Rees Casey Council has ordered the shutdown of the Berwick Farmers Market to help curb the spread of Covid-19 - despite the State Government saying food markets can stay open.

The market's 40 plus stallholders - who have been providing fresh, locally grown produce to the community for 13 years - were left confused and shocked by the news.

In sweeping new measures to slow the spread of coronavirus the Federal Government ordered cafes, pubs, food courts in shopping centres, and restaurants to restrict their services to takeaway only.

However, food markets would be allowed to continue trading so long as they complied with the rule of one person per every four square metres of space.

The Berwick Farmers Market manager Geoff Rankin said he was "astounded" by the council's decision as it was "cutting off of a food chain" in a time of crisis - which was only "making it worse".

"They're denying people access at a time when there's panic buying going on," he said.

"The main thing is they still have no concern for the residents."

"They didn't have to do it - there's a lot of angry people out there," Mr Rankin said.

The market - which is accredited under the Victorian Farmers' Markets Association and runs fortnightly - will be closed "until further notice".

"Due to the latest restrictions announced by the Federal and State Governments, which included the closure of local government community facilities the City of Casey has temporarily closed the Old Cheese Factory," Casey Council's director of community life, Steve Coldham said.

The Victorian Farmers' Markets Association's executive officer Kate Archdeacon, said she hoped Casey Council would review its decision.

"I have spoken with senior advisers in the State Government today, and can confirm that food markets are still essential gatherings," she said.

"It's one of the very few councils that have made that decision to close the market - most of them are going ahead.

"We are able to continue to trade through accredited Victorian farmers' markets as long as we are also following all the guidelines pro-

vided by the Chief Medical Officer."

Extra safety and hygiene practices at markets included more hand washing facilities being available, traders putting on two staff members so one can accept cash while the other serves, and no longer allowing barbecues to run or buskers to perform to prevent unnecessary gatherings, Ms Archdeacon said.

"Everyone's taking it really, really seriously."

Spotlight shines on stars By sports editor Russell Bennett WGCA PREMIER DIVISION 2019/20 TEAM OF THE YEAR While some of the best of the best of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s Premier tier missed out on the chance to fight it out for the premiership on the last weekend of the season, Kooweerup and Pakenham players - unsurprisingly - featured heavily in the Star News Team of the Year for 2019/20.

This year’s star-studded lineup is a who’s who of the Premier grade, but it also includes a host of players who played pivotal roles in propelling their sides forward.

Pakenham champion Dale Tormey and Kooweerup keeper-batsman Chris Bright were clearly two of the first chosen in this side, due to their breakout 2019/20 campaigns.

Tormey was once again in dominant touch with the blade - belting a staggering 946 homeand-away season runs at 86.0 - but he also took 21 wickets at 26.4 after his workload with the ball was increased due to the Lions’ injury woes.

But another all-rounder, Tooradin’s Russ Lehman, rightfully deserves a huge share of the season’s spotlight.

He’s long been the most consistent allaround talent in the Premier grade, and this season was no different.

Part of what makes him so incredible is that he devotes his time to his footy pursuits in the winter - effectively meaning he never gives his body a prolonged break.

He’s the WGCA’s biggest workhorse, but don’t mistake that for him being considered anything less than a bonafide star of the local game.

Not only was he once again in the top five leading run-scorers of the home and away season, he was the runaway leading wicket-taker with 40 - an incredible 12 ahead of the next best, Jess Mathers.

While outgoing Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper didn’t quite have the kind of season with the willow many have become accustomed to him producing, he was undoubtedly still one of the best top-order batsmen of the association and both he and young protege Tyler Clark richly deserve their selections.

While Clark recorded a number of starts, which he frustratingly couldn’t convert, he was still a model of consistency - with his only single-figure outing (8) coming via a Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 clash with Pakenham. Ultimately, he scored 425 home-and-away runs at a strong 47.22.

This year’s Star News Team of the Year is unsurprisingly stacked with star all-rounders, including Neil Peake who made a massive impact in his first season as a Seagull - scoring 535 runs at a shade under 45, and claiming seven wickets at just 22.6.

Pakenham star Chris Smith is another such all-around gun, with the former league medallist scoring 420 runs at a brilliant average of 60, despite having just eight home-and-away innings to his name throughout his campaign.

His Lions team mate Jason Williams is another notable selection. Having spent much of his career as a wicket-keeper batsman, the man affectionately known as ‘Boof’ has reinvented himself in recent seasons to become one of the competition’s most reliable spinners.

Many of the competition’s best batsmen single out Williams as one of the toughest bowlers to face in the local scene, and his importance to Pakenham’s side cannot be overstated. Only fellow Team of the Year selections Travis Wheller (186.2) and Lucas Carroll (174.5), along with Clyde’s Daniel Lever (165), bowled more home-and-away season overs than Williams this season. Like Tormey’s, his workload with the ball was significantly increased due to the Lions’ injury issues and,

like Tormey, he stepped right up to the plate claiming the scalps of a number of the WGCA’s best batsmen.

Lever was among the most unlucky not to be selected in this season’s team, along with the likes of Ash Adams from Tooradin, Matt Welsh from Cardinia, and Merinda Park combo Sasindu Perera and Paul Stockdale.

All of those would absolutely be worthy selections if this was a retrospective Country Week squad of players, based on the best performed throughout the season.

Welsh, in particular, had a marked break-

out campaign that was highlighted by a clear increase in confidence from previous seasons.

Not only did he take 18 wickets as one of the go-to options of the Bulls’ pace attack, he also stepped right up with the willow - scoring 328 vital runs as a rebuilding Cardinia battled to stave off relegation.

Undoubtedly his biggest highlight with the bat came in the penultimate round of the season when he scored a crucial, potentially defining ton against Devon Meadows that proved to be one of the biggest clutch innings of the Premier division given just what was on the line for the two respective sides.

More than a game for us

By Russell Bennett At a time when each passing day brings with it far more questions than answers for everyday Aussies, AFL Outer East has moved to assure its clubs and people that football and netball will always be there for them when the Covid-19 pandemic has eased.

But for now, there are much more pressing issues than the bounce of a ball.

AFL Outer East region general manager Aaron Bailey spoke about the reality facing the game at a grassroots level at the moment, but was quick to emphasise that the health and wellbeing of the people involved are priority number one.

"This is a horrible time for a lot of organisations and businesses, and certainly we're being effected," he said.

"But we're in a position to come through the other side, which is pleasing.

"We'll be able to resume - whether that's in 2020, or 2021 - and come back in a good place.

"We've had to put some staff on leave without pay in the interim, but it's really pleasing we could find them some other work in the short-term and our intention is to bring all our staff back."

Of course, there's so much conjecture about just when community football and netball will return, and there can be no guarantees it will be in 2020.

"Our aim is to try and get back to competition this year - we're going to release some options around returning to play later in the year," Bailey explained.

"We're in the fortunate position where we have three grounds without cricket pitches, which does give us the option - if we have to of going well into October.

"We're open to anything, but the key thing for us is that if we do come back in 2020, we have to make sure it's financially viable for our clubs.

"What we won't be doing is coming back if it puts our clubs under pressure. We'd prefer to hold our position and trade through this period into 2021, if the alternative was putting our clubs under pressure by making them come back."

At the moment, AFL Outer East is working through various options with its clubs on just what the competition structure might look like if players are to return to the footy field or netball court in 2020.

"Certainly there's a lot of work being done around salary caps and getting them down to a level that's sustainable," Bailey said.

"May 31 gives us a little bit of time to achieve this, but what we'll present to our clubs is that if we're coming back at date 'A' or date 'B', this is what it'd cost. Does this work for you? Is this achievable or viable?

"We don't want them to be worse off for coming back this year. That's the last thing we want. That's front of mind in our thinking, and our planning, as we look to come back."

While competition play in 2020 is anything but guaranteed, AFL Outer East is doing exhausting all its options to see what's possible.

Clubs like Woori Yallock and Narre Warren will only return to the field this season if it's safe to do so, and if they're not negatively impacted Pictures: ROB CAREW financially. 196946 "For us, I think there's a wellbeing aspect to it - if we can get people back involved in the footy and back following their clubs at the back end of this, I think we've got a responsibility to try, but it has to be done sensibly," Bailey said.

"It'll have to be done in a way that's viable for clubs, and actually supports them.

"We think there's still hope, but who knows in this current landscape.

"What we're doing right now is calling all our clubs to understand where they are. Our primary focus will be the clubs that need our support most, and when we come out of this we're going to help the clubs there too - whether there's competition this season or not."

Sporting clubs provide so much more than just an outlet to play footy or netball. They provide a genuine sense of belonging - connectivity to friends, family, and the wider community - and the mental health battles current facing many local club members are also front of mind for Bailey.

"One of our biggest concerns moving forward is the mental health and wellbeing aspect of all of this," he said.

"There'll be club members with potential issues around employment and housing, and one of our key responsibilities here - before football or netball - is to make sure that the welfare of our communities and their people come first.

"If we can get back to competition at some stage this year we think it'll help with that, but

at the moment we've just got to be there for our clubs.

"Our key message at the moment is that we want people to focus on their families and their welfare - to take care of themselves, and their immediate friends and family. Football

and netball will be there when they're ready, and once we get the opportunity to come back we'll do everything in our power to support our clubs and our communities. At the moment though, we just want everyone to be safe, well, and healthy."
