Cafes and restaurants can still operate but are restricted to takeaway - a measure which has left the Shingle Inn cafe at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in a dire situation as he was forced to lay of five workers.

"I don't know what will happen this year. I can't predict anything but clearly I don't have any income," the owner of the cafe, Sunil Ariyaratne, said, who had seen a big drop in customers due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Shoppers were also sparse at Fountain Gate, he said, with the normally bustling area

turning into an eerie solitude.

Mr Ariyaratne added he was also stressed about his 21-year-old daughter, a medical student in England, who has been asked to help in a hospital as the country deals with the Coronavirus outbreak.

Degani Bakery Cafe owner Ayman Beshay, also at Fountain Gate, had also been forced to lay off staff and was losing money fast.

In Cranbourne, Kelly's Hotel, which has been a popular watering hole for over a century, have resorted to a pick-up menu service through its bottle shop, which has remained opened and complies with social distancing rules with a tap and go service through a window.

"In these particular moments in time there is no major issue because all the staff are paid ... it's next week when the money doesn't come in there's going to be the issue," the hotel's manager Michael Goldie said.

City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson said the welfare of the business community remained a top priority. "Our team of economic development officers are available to speak with businesses to help navigate the options available from the Federal and State Government. Additionally, we are developing a package of local initiatives to offer support and relief to our community. This will be communicated when available," Mr Patterson said.

With the emergency shutdown of cafes and restaurants across the Casey region due to the Coronavirus crisis, many businesses are hurting.

Car slams into pharmacy

By Brendan Rees A driver is lucky has been lucky to escape injury after accidentally hitting the accelerator of their parked car, causing it to crash through a window of a pharmacy in Endeavour Hills.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene on Heatherton Road on Tuesday 31 March after the car went through the Chemist Discount store about 9.25am.

No-one was injured including the driver, a 45-year-old of Truganina.

Narre Warren SES volunteers also attended where they cleared debris from the scene and ensured the building was structurally safe.

Bandits break in

A group of people caught on CCTV moments after a Lynbrook home was broken into.

“I yelled and he looked down the corridor and said ‘let’s go’ or something to that effect and then took off,” he said.

“My wife was still half-sleep, I was like ‘call the cops, call the cops’.”

The man said it was likely the intruder had

The man hoped by sharing his story that others would lock their homes and check their security screens to ensure they were up-todate.

CCTV from a neighbour captured a group of people walking off just after the break-in, which has been handed to police.

Crime scene officers have told the man they had noticed the people in the footage wearing gloves, and “there probably wasn’t a lot they were going to be able to get in terms of evidence”.

Victoria Police has been contact for comment, and Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

A Lynbrook father has told of the moment he confronted a home invader as his family slept during the early hours of Tuesday morning, 31 March.

The man, who asked not to be named, said he now kept a cricket bat next to his bed following the ordeal.

He said his 13-year-old son was woken about 1.15am after hearing rustling sounds and a fridge opening downstairs.

“He poked his head downstairs and saw someone using their phone as a flashlight,” the father said.

Initially thinking the noise may have been their cats, the man hurried to the top of the stairs where he made eye-contact with the in-

It’s alleged the intruder, who may have been with two others, found a spare key for the back door in one of family’s two cars parked in the garage.

“I guess they flipped opened the latch of our security door which we usually lock,” the man said.

Among the items stolen were iPads, tablets, and a phone.

“In the scheme of things if that’s all that happened, I’m happy that was the extent of it and everyone was safe.”

Casey Council has ordered the shutdown of the Berwick Farmers Market to help curb the spread of Covid-19 - despite the State Government saying food markets can stay open.

The market's 40 plus stallholders - who have been providing fresh, locally grown produce to the community for 13 years - were left confused and shocked by the news.

In sweeping new measures to slow the spread of coronavirus the Federal Government ordered cafes, pubs, food courts in shopping centres, and restaurants to restrict their services to takeaway only.

However, food markets would be allowed to continue trading so long as they complied with the rule of one person per every four square metres of space.

The Berwick Farmers Market manager Geoff Rankin said he was "astounded" by the council's decision as it was "cutting off of a food chain" in a time of crisis - which was only "making it worse".

"They're denying people access at a time when there's panic buying going on," he said.

"The main thing is they still have no concern for the residents."

"They didn't have to do it - there's a lot of angry people out there," Mr Rankin said.

The market - which is accredited under the Victorian Farmers' Markets Association and runs fortnightly - will be closed "until further notice".

"Due to the latest restrictions announced by the Federal and State Governments, which included the closure of local government community facilities the City of Casey has temporarily closed the Old Cheese Factory," Casey Council's director of community life, Steve Coldham said.

Casey covid cases

By Brendan Rees Casey’s confirmed coronavirus cases have continued to climb, according to the state’s latest health data.

Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) figures showed 28 people in Casey had tested positive to the virus.

Victoria’s tally now stands at 968 - an increase of 51 from Tuesday 31 March.

In nearby local government areas, Greater Dandenong remained at nine cases while Cardinia had seven cases.

A further breakdown of cases showed Stonnington local government area had 76 confirmed cases - the highest number in the state - which included suburbs such as Toorak and South Yarra.

Four people have already died in Victoria, many more are in hospital or self-isolating at home.

There are 39 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission. More than 47,000 tests have been conducted to date.

Currently 32 people are in hospital - including six patients in intensive care - and 343 people have recovered.Of the total 968 cases, there have been 771 in Melbourne and 183 in regional Victoria.

Under new restrictions agreed by National

Cabinet, gatherings of more than two people are now banned, except for members of immediate households and for work or education purposes.

Premier Daniel Andrews said there are four reasons for Victorians to leave their home: food and supplies, medical care and care giving, exercise, and work or education.

“The more people ignore the rules and ignore the advice, the more this virus will continue to spread,” he said.

All people arriving from any international destination must also self-isolate for 14 days as per Commonwealth Government direction.

All travellers returning from overseas to Victoria will be placed in enforced quarantine for the self-isolation period of 14 days.

Police have strong powers to enforce these directions and can issue on the spot fines, including up to $1,652 for individuals and up to $9,913 for businesses.Under the State of Emergency people who don’t comply could also be taken to court and receive a fine of up to $20,000. Companies face fines of up to $100,000.

On Monday 30 March, Victoria Police fined a Fitzroy licensed restaurant $9913 for failing to adhere to directives designed to slow the spread of Covid-19.

State Liquor Unit members visited the restaurant and observed alcohol being served to

patrons seated inside the restaurant which is only allowed to provide a take-away service.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said these are unprecedented times. The threat of coronavirus to public health is real and everyone must take social distancing seriously.

“Social distancing will save lives. Everyone needs to comply with restrictions in place to keep yourself, your loved ones and the whole community safe,” Professor Sutton said.

Meanwhile, Victoria’s health system will receive a massive $1.3 billion injection to quickly establish an extra 4000 ICU beds in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The State Government will secure the ICU equipment, staff and space the health system needs to meet the expected surge in case load at the peak of the pandemic.

At present, Victoria’s public and private health services have about 450 fully equipped and staffed ICU beds, but “we know that won’t be nearly enough if the spread of the coronavirus continues” the State Government said.

To be ready, the State Government has ordered $1.2 billion worth of equipment and consumables it needs, as well as investing over $65 million for capital works and workforce training - securing record capacity for the intensive care system.

Brazen thief steals cash from pram

By Brendan Rees A mum of three has told of her shock after a heartless thief snatched her wallet from her pram as she shopped at a Coles supermarket in Narre Warren.

Rhiannon Johnston, 26, said she had been looking at the shelves when a man swiped her wallet from a cup holder on the top of her pram at the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre supermarket about 10.30am on Friday 27 March.

"I saw his hand slide over. He literally grabbed it and slid it into his basket and started to walk away," she said.

"I turned around and yelled out: 'Oi, that's my wallet' and he just dropped the basket on the ground and proceeded to walk out."

Ms Johnston, who had her 18-month-old daughter in the pram and eight-year-old son next to her, raised the alarm with security.

At this point, Ms Johnston said she picked up the basket containing her wallet and a carton of milk, before continuing to yell out to the man in front of stunned onlookers.

The man had managed to leave the shopping centre but was apprehended by security shortly after.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed police were investigating the incident and a 34-year-old man from Dandenong had been arrested.

He has been charged with theft and had been released pending summons and will appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court at

Firearm ban after spike The sale of firearms and ammunition for sporting or recreational purposes will be temporarily banned, following deliberations by the National Cabinet.

The new measures are designed to protect licensed firearm owners and dealers as well as the broader community.

The State Government said it understood licensed firearm owners and dealers exercised a high degree of care when complying with their obligations, however, there had been an increase in firearms permits to acquire applications and additional ammunition in recent times, increasing the risk that firearms and ammunition may not be stored safely.

To prevent potential stockpiling, and the risk that firearms and ammunition could fall into criminal hands or dealers could be targeted by organised crime, licensed dealers will now be prohibited from selling firearms and ammunition for sporting or recreational purposes for the duration of the coronavirus outbreak.

Those with a need to access firearms and ammunition for essential services, like farmers and rural landholders, professional vermin control and armed guards will still be able to access them for these purposes.

It comes as Victoria Police has undertaken 1,225 spot checks in the past 24 hours at homes, businesses and non-essential services across the state as part of Operation Sentinel.

Speedster caught

A thief has been arrested after stealing a wallet from a cup holder of a mother's pram at a Coles supermarket.

Casey Highway Patrol have caught a man speeding more than 50 kilometres above the speed limit on the Monash Freeway on Saturday the 21 March.

Police clocked the small SUV allegedly travelling at 157km/h in an 100km/h zone about 2.55am.

The vehicle at the time was being used for ride sharing services with two clients on board.

The driver, a man in his 50s, had his vehicle impounded for 30 days and had to call for another ride sharing service to collect him.

He is expected to be charged with speeding matters and will attend court at a later date.

Ms Johnston said she felt "silly" for placing her wallet on top of her pram but would be "very careful" in the future.

Surviving under pressure

Just one of the items on offer via Five Sparrows' Takeaway Menu

By Jonathan McQuie As cafes and restaurants around Melbourne struggle to stay open with the additional restrictions on public movement, Berwick establishment Five Sparrows is still running in order to support its workers.

According to cafe owner Sophie Rayment,

the business is remaining open to ensure that the staff can still be paid.

"We've got a small team of people, with only eight different people, meaning that there's eight different families who are affected by this, and they really matter to us. We're trying our best to provide for them."

Since the business started seven years ago,

they've had a strong takeaway component, with customers able to order from them online or via UberEats.

They've also streamlined their menu to reduce food wastage if the cafe is shut down and also to increase the kitchen's efficiency.

Despite the takeaway component continuing to run, the business is still facing signifi-

cant financial pressure as sales have dropped by over 50 per cent.

"We will only be able to survive if we don't have to pay rent. We're purely making money based on our online presence, not our physical location."

The cafe is in the Eden Rise shopping complex, which sent around a circular asking businesses to check if their insurance companies could cover rent.

Unfortunately for Five Sparrows, their insurer won't cover losses incurred from Covid-19.

In order to ensure that the business survives as long as possible, the owners aren't taking a wage.

"If the government can ease the pressure on the rent of borrowers and force shutdowns so that our staff can get something, that'd be very helpful. I would prefer to stay open as long as I can, but at the end of the day the focus is on the staff."

Live gigs keep music alive as audiences bunker down

As musicians try to weather the coronavirus storm, a Lynbrook man has found a way for talented voices to still be heard.

At at time where people hunkered down at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Scott Watson decided to create a livestream Facebook concert to support local music artists while keeping people entertained at their homes.

Through the Facebook group 'Friday Night

@ Home,' which has attracted more than 1000 followers, viewers tuned in on Friday night, 27 March to watch the first act perform, a duo called 'Twice Shy' featuring Josh Tooth and Rachel Chetcuti, which resulted in more than 200 tickets being sold on the night.

"It's gathering a bit of speed which is awesome," Mr Watson said, who is also president of the Lynbrook Residents Association.

Followers are encouraged to buy a ticket for $2 plus a 50 cent booking fee through TryBook-

ing - however people are still able to view concerts on the Facebook page without a fee.

"Obviously we're relying on people to do the right thing," he said, as all proceeds of ticket sales (minus the booking fee) go towards the artists during this difficult time.

Mr Watson, who works in major events, said: "We have a few acts lined up. I don't think there will be any shortage of talent which is awesome."

Through the livestream, people can com-

Last Friday, viewers posted photos on the Facebook page of the concert hooked up to their TVs while kicking back on their couches and enjoying the fun.

Mr Watson said the idea came about after speaking to a mate to get the community together.

"If it gets really popular maybe we'll make it Saturday night as well."

Web portal offers support My Business Health, a web portal designed to provide holistic support to small business owners, now features a dedicated section for those struggling with the Covid-19 crisis.

The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell has been inundated with distressing stories of small businesses decimated by the ripple-effects of coronavirus.

"Small businesses are in a world of pain right now, with many forced to close their doors and others fighting to survive," Ms Carnell says.

"Many of these small business owners will be too busy in their efforts to stay afloat to realise the toll it's taking on their mental health.

"My Business Health offers simple and practical information to help small businesses find their way through this difficult time.

"This includes the latest information on government support measures as well as assistance with employer obligations, finances, available government payments, loans and tax.

Rates relief on the table

By Brendan Rees Casey Council has offered "potential relief options" to help those struggling to pay their rates as the coronavirus plunged the livelihoods of many into crisis.

In a statement to residents on 27 March, council said: "While rate payments for the City of Casey are currently due, council is aware that some people may experience challenges paying their rates, either due to our Customer Service counters being closed or financial hardship due to the Coronavirus pandemic."

"Where possible council is providing flexibility to affected customers and encourages anyone unable to meet their payment by the due dates to contact council as soon as possible to make arrangements and discuss potential relief options," council said in the message.

Interest on all current overdue accounts has been suspended until 30 June.

While council's customer service counters are closed, staff are continuing to work as usual and are available to answer residents' questions over the phone or email.

"Those account holders paying by direct debit will continue to have their payments deducted on 28 March, April and May unless otherwise advised by the ratepayer."

Council has also advised residents who usually pay cash at a counter to contact their local bank branch to find out what assistance they might be able to provide.

"The majority of ratepayers already use payment options that do not require face-toface contact including BPAY and credit card over the phone or via our website. Payment

can also be made at the Post Office," council said.

In the statement, council said its economic development team would also free to speak with local businesses severely impacted by the pandemic.

"With the situation changing rapidly, council is constantly reviewing resourcing needs while ensuring the health and safety of staff and the community, as we continue to deliver vital community services where we can."

Parks Vic closes campsites amid coronavirus crisis Parks Victoria have closed all designated campgrounds and accommodation throughout all parks and reserves across Victoria in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

All roofed accommodation sites and designated campgrounds managed by Parks Victoria have been shut indefinitely from 25 March - a decision made at the direction of the Chief Health Officer of Victoria until further notice.

All existing bookings will be fully refunded, and no further bookings will be taken. A designated campground includes any formed area that has infrastructure such as toilets, fire pits, or barbecues.

All people currently camping in designated campgrounds are being requested to leave immediately. Rangers will be patrolling to instruct people to leave.

Any day visitors to parks and reserves are actively encouraged to disperse widely and adhere strictly to social distancing guidelines.

Other areas within parks will remain open to allow for exercise, however Park Victoria says social distancing must be practised and those with flu-like symptoms must follow the advice from the Chief Health Officer of Victoria and remain at home.

"Closing all designated campgrounds across Victoria for all overnight camping and accommodation will help protect the health and safety of visitors and staff," Parks Victoria CEO Matthew Jackson said.

Parks Victoria has arrangements in place to ensure business continuity, including ongoing urgent recovery efforts in bushfire-affected parks, essential maintenance and firefighting.

Alpaca mauled in attack

By Brendan Rees The heartbroken owners of an alpaca have told of their distress after finding their beloved animal mauled in what's suspected to be a dog attack.

The owners, who have asked not to be named, had been out for the morning on Monday 24 February when the unspeakable happened at their Narre Warren North home their 11-year-old alpaca had been left for dead with horrific facial injuries at their McKenzie Lane property.

It was only when the owner's husband had arrived home about 12 noon that he learned of the animal's distressed state through a concerned neighbour.

He hurried to the vet before calling his wife to return home to comfort their much-loved alpaca named Beau.

But what she saw next would be one of the

most "absolutely horrible" experiences she's encountered.

"I just couldn't believe it," she said, as she discovered Beau lying on the ground - "nudging the grass with his face, possibly trying to get water".

"He could not open his mouth, and was not able to breathe properly."

Sadly, Beau had to be put down, however his companion, Bruno, another alpaca on the property - escaped unscathed.

Casey Council has confirmed it was investigating the incident and are appealing to witnesses for help.

"Investigating officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the event, in particular the owners of a white American Staffordshire Terrier seen in the vicinity of Kalora Park Reserve, Narre Warren North, on the day of the attack," Casey Council manager of

Still struggling with the loss after five weeks, the couple hope by sharing their story they will prevent such future atrocities from occurring and anyone with information regarding their ordeal would come forward.

The owners have viewed footage from a neighbour's CCTV camera which captured a woman initially wandering around with two dogs at Kalora Park - an off-the-leash park that abuts their property.

The dogs, the owner said, did not appear to be under "control" for "some of the time" by their owner.

"It all looks OK for a while then all of a sudden these dogs run between the pens and come running towards (the neighbour's) properties," the owner said.

"The biggest one - which is mainly a white dog - sort of crouches down. Has he seen

something of interest?"

According to the owner, the footage later allegedly showed a man getting out of a car on McKenzie Lane carrying two dog leads - "but he has no dogs" - until he's later seen with the woman in the park before they walk off together with the dogs on leads.

The couple have taken photos of Beau's injuries including blood that had splattered on a nearby shed which has been handed to council.

Unfortunately, the couple say they are frustrated with council's response which they have described as "contemptuous" - and added more pain to their heartache."l do believe that if a child had been savagely attacked or killed this footage would not have been dismissed as worthless," the owner said.

Firies kept busy, but grisly find after house fire

By Brendan Rees A body has been found after a house went up in flames in Narre Warren on Saturday 28 March.

Emergency services were called to Linlithgow Court about 3.30am.

Fire crews from Hallam and Narre Warren brought the blaze under control in just over half-an-hour before the body was found inside the burnt-out house.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the fire and death are yet to be determined," Senior Constable Adam West said.

Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, firefighters responded to a shed fire in Pearcedale on Noaki Street about 10.30pm on Saturday, 28 March.

About 30 firefighters were on scene after

neighbours reportedly heard a loud bang which "shook" their homes and "rattled windows".

A convoy of fire trucks from Pearcedale, Baxter, Somerville, Cranbourne, Devon Meadows, and Tyabb helped bring the blaze under control within an hour.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a burn-off at the property which spread to the shed - where about 30 hay bales went up in flames.

There were no reported injuries.

The loud bang was heard as far as Warneet and Somerville - and is believed to have been the result of acetylene bottle (a compressed gas) exploding in the 20 by 20 metre shed.

"The owner had been doing some burning off," Pearcedale CFA firefighter Robyn Murphy

said. "Obviously something heated up near their shed and the oxy-bottle exploded."

Large trees with exposed roots had also caught fire on the property - which had proven difficult for firefighters to access, Ms Murphy said.

"We had to slash our way through some blackberries and other vegetation to get to the back of the trees which backed on to a dam," she said.

Ms Murphy said fire crews initially had trouble getting to the scene of the blaze as onlookers blocked their path.

"They actually had traffic congestion in the dirt road; they had people in front of them that wouldn't or couldn't get out of the way and people behind them - even though they've got their sirens on."

"It took a little while to find it because there was no fire when it first went up after the bang so it was about 10 minutes finding where it actually was."

Crews had also returned the following morning, where they stayed until 11.40am, pulling out and dispersing the burnt-out hay to prevent further smouldering.

CFA had issued a safety message to residents at the time, warning people of the fire, which said there was no threat to the community.

The fire had not threaten the owner's home or other neighbouring properties.

Cafe has a new vista

Fans of Pakenham's Vista Cafe can now enjoy professionally cooked meals at home thanks to the cafe's new delivery service.

The popular Lakeside Cafe was forced to shut its doors earlier this month when the Federal Government ordered all cafes and restaurants to cease dine-in service. Owner Adam Khan said he decided to shut the cafe completely at that time out of respect for public safety.

Since then Adam and his team have been working frantically to switch the business to a home delivery model until the Covid-19 crisis is over.

Cafe staff will begin delivering meals from tonight.

Delivery will involve no contact with customers. Meals will be dropped at front doors from 5pm to 8pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Adam hopes the move will allow him to bring back some of his staff let go when the cafe closed.

"It is a tough time for us all and we are doing our best to make this time as comfortable as possible and keep us out of trouble by pro-

viding great food at great prices," Adam said.

The takeaway menu offers many of Vista Cafe's favourite meals including chicken parma, chicken schnitzel, fish and chips, the Vista burger and chips, chicken scallopini, home style roast beef, pasta with your choice of sauce, Delhi lamb curry and butter chicken.

Kids have the option of chicken nuggets and chips or fish and chips.

Minimum delivery is $30 with a $3 delivery free.

Adam encouraged customers who want a night off cooking at home to take advantage of the delivery service and order in cafe quality food.

Pets safe from being infected with coronavirus With the ongoing Coronavirus crisis causing panic and confusion, Australia's Animal Emergency Service (AES) has confirmed that pets cannot be infected with the disease.

Don’t put up with pain People shouldn't feel like they have to put up with joint and muscle pain during the current health crisis, according to the team at Casey Osteopathic Health Service.

Owner Dr Spyro Antoniou encouraged patients to visit the Beaconsfield based practice where they will be treated in a sanitised, hygienic environment with staff maintaining social distancing and other precautions where practicable.

Dr Antoniou and his team are working hard with other allied health professionals to ensure as many people can be treated as possible without adding extra burdens on general practice and hospitals.

Osteopathy is a drug-free, non-invasive manual therapy that aims to improve health across all body systems by manipulating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework.

Treatment is suitable for all ages, including children, the elderly and pregnant women.

Osteopaths use techniques that include

soft-tissue massage, mobilisation, stretching, articulations and gentle manipulation. Osteopaths can advise on posture, stretching and strengthening programs.

The practice has five experienced osteopaths who are fully qualified and have gone through extensive training. The clinic's myotherapist holds an Advanced Diploma and is also a qualified remedial massage therapist.

“The practice takes a holistic approach, which means that osteopaths look for the cause of the problem and don’t just treat the symptoms," Dr Antoniou said.

Spotlight shines on stars By sports editor Russell Bennett WGCA PREMIER DIVISION 2019/20 TEAM OF THE YEAR While some of the best of the best of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s Premier tier missed out on the chance to fight it out for the premiership on the last weekend of the season, Kooweerup and Pakenham players - unsurprisingly - featured heavily in the Star News Team of the Year for 2019/20.

This year’s star-studded lineup is a who’s who of the Premier grade, but it also includes a host of players who played pivotal roles in propelling their sides forward.

Pakenham champion Dale Tormey and Kooweerup keeper-batsman Chris Bright were clearly two of the first chosen in this side, due to their breakout 2019/20 campaigns.

Tormey was once again in dominant touch with the blade - belting a staggering 946 homeand-away season runs at 86.0 - but he also took 21 wickets at 26.4 after his workload with the ball was increased due to the Lions’ injury woes.

But another all-rounder, Tooradin’s Russ Lehman, rightfully deserves a huge share of

the season’s spotlight.

He’s long been the most consistent allaround talent in the Premier grade, and this season was no different.

Part of what makes him so incredible is that he devotes his time to his footy pursuits in the winter - effectively meaning he never gives his body a prolonged break.

He’s the WGCA’s biggest workhorse, but don’t mistake that for him being considered anything less than a bonafide star of the local game.

Not only was he once again in the top five leading run-scorers of the home and away season, he was the runaway leading wicket-taker with 40 - an incredible 12 ahead of the next best, Jess Mathers.

And to think, those wickets came at an average of just 10.83.

While outgoing Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper didn’t quite have the kind of season with the willow many have become accustomed to him producing, he was undoubtedly still one of the best top-order batsmen of the association and both he and young protege Tyler Clark richly deserve their selections.

While Clark recorded a number of starts,

which he frustratingly couldn’t convert, he was still a model of consistency - with his only single-figure outing (8) coming via a Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 clash with Pakenham. Ultimately, he scored 425 home-and-away runs at a strong 47.22.

This year’s Star News Team of the Year is unsurprisingly stacked with star all-rounders, including Neil Peake who made a massive impact in his first season as a Seagull - scoring 535 runs at a shade under 45, and claiming seven wickets at just 22.6.

Pakenham star Chris Smith is another such all-around gun, with the former league medallist scoring 420 runs at a brilliant average of 60, despite having just eight home-and-away innings to his name throughout his campaign.

His Lions team mate Jason Williams is another notable selection. Having spent much of his career as a wicket-keeper batsman, the man affectionately known as ‘Boof’ has reinvented himself in recent seasons to become one of the competition’s most reliable spinners.

Many of the competition’s best batsmen single out Williams as one of the toughest bowlers to face in the local scene, and his importance to Pakenham’s side cannot be overstated. Only fellow Team of the Year selections Travis Wheller (186.2) and Lucas Carroll (174.5), along with Clyde’s Daniel Lever (165),

bowled more home-and-away season overs than Williams this season. Like Tormey’s, his workload with the ball was significantly increased due to the Lions’ injury issues and, like Tormey, he stepped right up to the plate claiming the scalps of a number of the WGCA’s best batsmen.

Lever was among the most unlucky not to be selected in this season’s team, along with the likes of Ash Adams from Tooradin, Matt Welsh from Cardinia, and Merinda Park combo Sasindu Perera and Paul Stockdale.

All of those would absolutely be worthy selections if this was a retrospective Country Week squad of players, based on the best performed throughout the season.

Welsh, in particular, had a marked breakout campaign that was highlighted by a clear increase in confidence from previous seasons.

Not only did he take 18 wickets as one of the go-to options of the Bulls’ pace attack, he also stepped right up with the willow - scoring 328 vital runs as a rebuilding Cardinia battled to stave off relegation.

Undoubtedly his biggest highlight with the bat came in the penultimate round of the season when he scored a crucial, potentially defining ton against Devon Meadows that proved to be one of the biggest clutch innings of the Premier division given just what was on the line for the two respective sides.

Stan Bulmer, Paul McNamara, Gary Wilson and Geoff Miller just missed, going down 16-19.

Narre Warren (2) defeated Dandenong Club (3) 62-46.

The Division 6 (a side) had a good 29-shot win over Clayton. Janice Moran, Nancy Pugh and Enid Gibb had a great day, winning 34-5, while Pam Uren, Rose Rasmussen and Judy Naughton drew 17-17.

THURSDAY Both Narre Warren teams won their section flags with wins over Noble Park at Berwick.

Division 4 had a close three-shot win and Division 6 (a side) had a six-shot win. Division 4 had the kind of tough encounter expected in any final, with two of its rinks finishing in a draw. Stan Bulmer, Paul McNamara, Gary Wilson and Geoff Miller had the winning rink, 1815, while Les Clement, Alan Mark, Joe McGuire and Craig Moore (21-21) and Glen Cadman, Susan Ellery, Keith Mark and Reg Johnstone (17-17) drew.

More than a game for us

By Russell Bennett At a time when each passing day brings with it far more questions than answers for everyday Aussies, AFL Outer East has moved to assure its clubs and people that football and netball will always be there for them when the Covid-19 pandemic has eased.

But for now, there are much more pressing issues than the bounce of a ball.

AFL Outer East region general manager Aaron Bailey spoke about the reality facing the game at a grassroots level at the moment, but was quick to emphasise that the health and wellbeing of the people involved are priority number one.

"This is a horrible time for a lot of organisations and businesses, and certainly we're being effected," he said.

"But we're in a position to come through the other side, which is pleasing.

"We'll be able to resume - whether that's in 2020, or 2021 - and come back in a good place.

"We've had to put some staff on leave without pay in the interim, but it's really pleasing we could find them some other work in the short-term and our intention is to bring all our staff back."

Of course, there's so much conjecture about just when community football and netball will return, and there can be no guarantees it will be in 2020.

"Our aim is to try and get back to competition this year - we're going to release some options around returning to play later in the year," Bailey explained.

"We're in the fortunate position where we have three grounds without cricket pitches, which does give us the option - if we have to of going well into October.

"We're open to anything, but the key thing for us is that if we do come back in 2020, we have to make sure it's financially viable for our clubs.

"What we won't be doing is coming back if it puts our clubs under pressure. We'd prefer to hold our position and trade through this period into 2021, if the alternative was putting our clubs under pressure by making them come back."

At the moment, AFL Outer East is working through various options with its clubs on just what the competition structure might look like if players are to return to the footy field or netball court in 2020.

"Certainly there's a lot of work being done around salary caps and getting them down to a level that's sustainable," Bailey said.

"May 31 gives us a little bit of time to achieve this, but what we'll present to our clubs is that if we're coming back at date 'A' or date 'B', this is what it'd cost. Does this work for you? Is this achievable or viable?

"We don't want them to be worse off for coming back this year. That's the last thing we want. That's front of mind in our thinking, and our planning, as we look to come back."

While competition play in 2020 is anything but guaranteed, AFL Outer East is doing exhausting all its options to see what's possible.

Clubs like Woori Yallock and Narre Warren will only return to the field this season if it's safe to do so, and if they're not negatively impacted Pictures: ROB CAREW financially. 196946 "For us, I think there's a wellbeing aspect to it - if we can get people back involved in the footy and back following their clubs at the back end of this, I think we've got a responsibility to try, but it has to be done sensibly," Bailey said.

"It'll have to be done in a way that's viable for clubs, and actually supports them.

"We think there's still hope, but who knows in this current landscape.

"What we're doing right now is calling all our clubs to understand where they are. Our primary focus will be the clubs that need our support most, and when we come out of this we're going to help the clubs there too - whether there's competition this season or not."

Sporting clubs provide so much more than just an outlet to play footy or netball. They provide a genuine sense of belonging - connectivity to friends, family, and the wider community - and the mental health battles current facing many local club members are also front of mind for Bailey.

"One of our biggest concerns moving forward is the mental health and wellbeing aspect of all of this," he said.

"There'll be club members with potential issues around employment and housing, and one of our key responsibilities here - before football or netball - is to make sure that the welfare of our communities and their people come first.

"If we can get back to competition at some stage this year we think it'll help with that, but

at the moment we've just got to be there for our clubs.

"Our key message at the moment is that we want people to focus on their families and their welfare - to take care of themselves, and their immediate friends and family. Football

and netball will be there when they're ready, and once we get the opportunity to come back we'll do everything in our power to support our clubs and our communities. At the moment though, we just want everyone to be safe, well, and healthy."
