University of Melbourne research has found

Curtin University research shows holistic education pays real-world dividends. It has found that Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoy a wage premium of around 10 per cent.

Andrew Leighton, Principal of St Clare’s Catholic School, Truganina South, is inspired by what a Catholic education can achieve.

‘Families want children to learn as independent, creative thinkers, inspired by gospel values and empowered with a sense of purpose and responsibility’, he says.

‘Students learn to confidently engage with others and develop skills to adapt to an everchanging world; it’s wonderful to watch.’

Parents have a critical role to play in achieving student success because - as Robert Horwood, Principal of St Leonard’s School in Glen Waverley, explains - it involves building deep connections with parents as partners in learning, and helping them assist their children with their school journey.

‘With more parents working and the pressures of being time-poor, many families have less time to be together and to enjoy and discuss everyday life.’

‘These factors can lead to a sense of uncertainty and anxiousness for parents, who then unknowingly pass feelings of anxiety and lack of resilience on to their children.’

‘Sometimes, real or implied pressure to be perfect, compete, achieve success in everything they do and never being allowed to fail sets our learners up to be anxious teenagers and adults.’

This is where Catholic schools’ emphasis on parental communication and support can make a real difference and smooth student paths to learning.

Alongside a first-rate education, Catholic schools also offer social partnerships that keep Catholic schools at the cutting edge of an everevolving education sector.

Mr Miles says that these ‘partnerships give students access to a wide range of opportunities that can support future career prospects and get them involved in helping their neighbours through social justice activities in their local community’.

‘The minds of twenty-first century learners need to be nourished by a range of opinions to help build better communities for the future.’

An emphasis on the whole student is further endorsed by academic research, with a Curtin University study showing Catholic school graduates enjoy higher levels of life satisfaction.

The study also makes special mention of the social capital available to those from Catholic schools.

This powerful sense of social justice is what inspired students at Kolbe Catholic College, Greenvale Lakes, to generously donate and deliver Christmas presents to children who have experienced some form of abuse, neglect or trauma.

Students also benefit from school wellbeing programs that live out the gospel values of faith and a shared belief that we should all aspire to a common good.

And in an important indication of the character of our schools, a Melbourne Institute study shows that Catholic school students are far less likely to be bullied than those attending government schools.

Why a Girls’ School?

PARENTS often face conflicting advice when deciding whether to send their child to a singlesex or coeducational school.

There are more single-sex schools for girls than for boys in each of the three Australian educational sectors: government, Catholic and independent.

As a consequence, more boys than girls are enrolled in some coeducational schools.

So as a parent, how do you decide which school is best for your child? And, importantly, what do you actually want out of a school? For example, is the focus on achieving good grades, or about making sure your child fits in and feels accepted?

There is no straightforward answer, but research has revealed there are some key things to consider when choosing a school which might help determine where to send your child.

Single-sex schools Most of Australia’s single-sex schools are found in the fee-paying non-government sector. This means that financially secure parents have a wider choice of schools open to them.

Of the small number of single-sex schools in the government sector, many are academically selective.

Research suggests http://www.aare.edu.au/ datapublications/2007/for07148.pdf that girls who attend single-sex schools are more confident about themselves as learners in subjects such as mathematics and physics than in coeducational schools. In the absence of boys, the girls also feel less constrained in engaging in classroom discussions.

For boys attending single-sex or coeducational schools, their confidence levels in physics and mathematics are found to be equally high, and they boisterously engage in classroom discourse.

Girls’ schools provide a fantastic opportunity to educate, inspire and nurture the girls of today, who will be the leaders of tomorrow. In a single sex school, every girl is able to be heard. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of girls, which provides the opportunity to develop and excel. In a coeducational environment, girls can be “drowned out by the boys”, whereas in single-sex schools can captain the debating team, choose to study physics or be part of a cricket team.

Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says the greatest compliment he has ever received was overhearing one parent tell another “If you want your child to be truly happy, then send them to a Catholic school”.

This year over 210,000 students - close to one in four Victorian school children - will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide.

And above the mere numbers, academic results and a steady stream of independent research underlines the difference a Catholic education makes.

Catholic schools across Melbourne excel in literacy and numeracy - the crucial building blocks of learning - returning results well above the state average in NAPLAN tests.

The 2017 VCE median study score - the best indicator of the typical level of VCE achievement in a school - show stronger outcomes for Melbourne Catholic schools, with results that now stand some 10 per cent higher than the equivalent results for Victorian government schools. Using the same measure, the proportion of high achievers in Melbourne Catholic schools is more than three times larger than the equivalent figure for government schools.

A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary school students will go on to university.

At the same time, the Curtin University research shows Catholic school graduates enjoy greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

A major part of this academic and personal success comes from the fact that when Catholic teachers walk into class they see individual students. Teaching and learning programs are based around diversity and dignity and designed to engage students at a social and emotional level.

“The thing I like about working in the Catholic school environment is that we genuinely put the student’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do,” Liam Buckley, a teacher St John’s Regional College, Dandenong, explains. “School for our students is not just about the learning of content, but the development of the person as a whole.”

Sport and your child ONLY six out of 10 children aged between five and 14 years participate in sport outside of school, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The Australian Health Survey conducted in April 2012 found that 25 per cent of Australian children and teenagers, aged five to 17 years, are overweight or obese, indicating that we need to foster a more sports-minded culture that encourages children to be physically active.

People who are active dramatically reduce their risk of many diseases, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Regular exercise is also known to reduce the risk of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Habits are established early in life and evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults.

Benefits of sport for children Some of the many benefits of sport participation for children include: ■ reduced risk of obesity ■ increased cardiovascular fitness ■ healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons ■ improved coordination and balance ■ a greater ability to physically relax and, therefore, avoid the complications of chronic muscular tension (such as headache or back ache) ■ improved sleep ■ mental health benefits, such as greater confidence ■ improved social skills ■ improved personal skills, including cooperation and leadership.

Reducing inactivity may be more effective in achieving overall increases in energy levels in young children than putting the emphasis on increasing involvement in sporting activities.

Taking steps to reduce children’s sedentary time is important.

Sedentary pursuits and children Around 40 per cent of Australian children don’t participate in sport at all. Common sedentary activities that compete with physical activity include: ■ homework ■ computer games ■ internet use ■ television.

The Australian Government recommends that: ‘Children and young people should participate in at least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity every day.’

■ ‘Children and young people should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (such as computer games, internet, TV), particularly during daylight hours.’

■

These recommendations are a guide to the minimum level of physical activity required for good health.

According to the Bureau of Statistics, over the 12 months prior to April 2012 in Australia, 1.7 million or 60 per cent of children aged 5 to 14 years participated in at least one sport outside of school hours that had been organised by a school, club or association.

Participation amongst boys (949,000) exceeded that of girls (727,000), both overall and within each age group category. Children aged 9 to 11 years were most likely to participate in sport (66 per cent).

The three most popular organised sports for boys in 2011 to 2012 were soccer (22 per cent of total), swimming and Australian rules football.

For girls, swimming/diving (19 per cent of total) and netball were predominant.

Encourage your child to be physically active Parents can help their children to be physically active in a number of ways, including: ■ Lead by example – be physically active yourself.

■ Make sure that some family outings offer opportunities for physical activity, such as playing sport together.

■ Encourage your child to walk or ride their bicycle for short trips, rather than rely on you to drive them.

■ Support your child’s efforts in sport. Make sure you’re there at each match, cheering them on from the sidelines.

■ Set time limits on sedentary activities like computer games and television.

■ Consult with your child’s school on ways to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity.

Making a difference through STEM CHILDREN are natural scientists. They constantly explore the world around them and seek to solve problems.

Science, technology, engineering and maths skills harness this sense of curiosity to find new solutions. These ideas translate into new opportunities, new industries and new jobs. And while not every child will go on to work on the cutting edge of technology, all children benefit from the principles of STEM learning.

STEM MAD promotes STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems and demonstrates how students in Catholic schools take action that matters in areas ranging from health, the environment, animal welfare, to wellbeing and more.

These improvements will assist in the expansion of our co-curricular sports program and continue to enhance student learning in the physical education and health domains.

Celebrating language diversity CELEBRATING language diversity at home and at school.

As a boy, Professor Joe Lo Bianco AM felt embarrassed hearing his parents speak Italian in public when growing up in the north-east Victorian town of Myrtleford.

'I didn't know any English until I went to school,' he says.

'Like many, many migrant children I was embarrassed by my parents' language and didn't want them to speak Italian in public, I was so desperate to belong and fit in.'

Now, as an adult, Professor Lo Bianco is spearheading a global push for a multilingual world as the lead author of the Salzburg Statement.

He is also Professor of Language and Literacy Education at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

Celebrating language d iversity Professor Lo Bianco says the Salzburg Statement for a Multilingual World is a call for individuals, corporations, institutions and governments around the world to celebrate and promote language diversity.

The statement was released to coincide with International Mother Language Day on 21 February, observed each year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, and multilingualism.

Professor Lo Bianco celebrated the release of the statement with Department of Education and Training Secretary Gill Callister at a recent reception.

Both discussed the importance of children learning their mother language and all children learning a second language in the context of an increasingly globalised, multilingual world.

Busting language myths Professor Lo Bianco says parents often mistakenly believe speaking their first language to their children will hinder their ability to learn English — when in fact the opposite is true.

'It's actually much better for children to have a rich knowledge base in their first language,' he says.

'If parents are learning English themselves and speaking to their children in English, then they are talking to their children in a language they don't know very well.

'Studies show that this tends to mean children receive very fractured and fragmented information, which is not good for the child's language development.'

Teacher power Professor Lo Bianco says teachers could play a crucial role in encouraging children and their parents to continue speaking their mother language.

'Teachers can foster a positive attitude by drawing attention to the fact that other languages exist and are spoken by children in the classroom and that these children speak these languages to their parents at home,' he says.

'They should inform themselves of what the research shows about learning multiple languages.

'If children develop two languages to a reasonably high level, they gain a lot of benefits for their overall educational development.'

He says teachers can also encourage parents to continue to speak to their children in their mother language.

'It won't hinder them picking up English because English is something they will be immersed in at school,' he says.

Languages in the Education State The Department has launched posters to celebrate the importance of mother languages and encourage parents to speak to their children in the language they know best.

In Victoria, all schools are required to provide instruction in eight different learning areas, one of which is languages.

Speaking two or more languages will make your child a better thinker and communicator, giving them advantages at school and in life.

St Monica’s College, Epping ST MONICA’S College, Epping was established in 1964 as a girls’ school. This served a specific purpose at that time. In the 1970’s the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, local clergy and parishioners saw a real need for boys’ Catholic Education thus in 1978 St Monica’s College, Epping proudly became coeducational. Our school has flourished ever since.

In all of our local Primary schools (Government and Catholic) coeducation is offered. In all tertiary institutions (universities and TAFES etc.) coeducation is the only way education is provided. I argue that all education is delivered at its best through coeducation.

Why? There are many reasons why I contend that the coeducation choice Monican parents have made for their children is the right one. Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendships develop in a natural way between girls and boys. This mutual feeling and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded person. These friendships emerge through shared experiences in classrooms, from participating in shared activities outside the formal curriculum, and through shared membership in clubs and teams.

Coeducation assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other, and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially.

Truly, coeducation reflects 100% the diversity of society. Coeducation, in other words, IS the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex. Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years.

Coeducation at its Best” I believe that girls are more confident to express their views on all manner of things in their daily life in a coeducational College and exactly the same applies to boys. Students feel comfortable in whom they are and the chances are many to develop healthy and positive attitudes and self-image. Let us hope that this in turn reduces harassment and bullying.

Coeducation is popular throughout the world and a chief reason for this is that it allows for greater socialisation, wider diversity of experiences and fewer gender stereotypes for young people. This can only be healthy, good, and most desirable. It could be stated that collaboration between the sexes, not separation, fosters equality. In a coeducational setting, students are exposed to both male and female role models, students learn to lead the opposite sex in all types of situations, and finding a group of friends to match up with is easier.

There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single sex education. These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying the coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person, confident and wise.

Science education crucial EXPERTS speak out on the priorities for science education in Australia.

Planting the seeds of science interest - Dr Anne Forbes Dr Anne Forbes of Macquarie University says that it is important for students to have fun and practical experiences that build their science skills.

"Young scientists need lots of hands-on, interesting opportunities to develop the skills to build robust data sets," said Dr Forbes.

"Through such experiences they gain insights into the ‘nature of science’ and how it can help us to gain insights into our world."

According to Dr Forbes, such experiences also enable students to "understand that science experts are those to whom we should turn when making decisions about future growth, industry and business plans to maintain a sustainable relationship with the environment and resources."

A great approach to this, she said, is through projects that integrate the key components of STEM learning.

"Integrated STEM projects provide great contexts for developing the skills of working and thinking scientifically (S) as well as skills associated with computational thinking (T), design thinking (E) and working and thinking mathematically (M)."

Secondary students come together TO support a sense of solidarity and Christian unity amongst the seven secondary schools in the Diocese of Sale, we prioritise opportunities for students to gather and celebrate their connection as part of one Catholic Diocesan community.

These youth ministry events play an important role in developing student leadership skills, using peer to peer ministry to encourage other students to embrace the Christian call to act in the service of others.

The leader of our Diocese, Bishop Patrick O’Regan, is a regular attendee at youth ministry events and strongly values the opportunity to connect with the young people in our schools.

Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale, Ms Maria Kirkwood, said youth ministry events give students the chance to collaborate and experience a sense of belonging in a diverse and hope-filled community.

“Our youth ministry events are just one of the ways we encourage students to become engaged and successful learners. During youth ministry workshops, students join with their peers from across the Diocese to draw on the life-giving traditions and spirituality of the Catholic faith in a nurturing environment,” she said.

In 2019, five youth ministry events were held.

Conversations with the Bishop Newly elected College Captains from all seven secondary schools came together to dialogue around what it means to be a leader in the uniquely Catholic community that is their school.

This opportunity helps the Captains to form meaningful connections with their peers and create contacts that may be called upon during their year of leading the student body at their school. The highlight of the day is the opportunity to be involved in an open dialogue and sharing session with Bishop Pat. Youth ministry celebration More than 200 students gathered during Catholic Education Week to share their faith through art, music, drama and other creative presentation methods. Australian Catholic Youth Festival A pilgrim group of 11 teachers and 33 students from Diocesan schools joined 5000 Catholic youth from around Australia at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth. Your Child’s Transition to School STARTING school is a big step for you and your child. It can be both challenging and exciting. As families, the support you give your child is important because you are your child’s first and most important teacher.

Tips for transition Below are some tips on how you can help your child have a positive start to school.

The year before school ■ Ask your child what they think about starting school.

■ Encourage your child to ask questions about going to school.

■ Help your child stay healthy. Make sure they have regular health and dental checks and keep immunisations up to date.

■ Encourage your child to try to do things on their own such as dressing, going to the toilet, washing their hands, unwrapping their food and opening and closing their drink bottle.

■ Talk to friends and other families about what school is like.

■ Attend transition-to-school programs and activities at your child’s early years service and school.

■ Talk to your child’s early childhood educator about things you can do at home to help your child’s learning and development.

■ Talk to the school about how you can engage in your child’s learning and development at school.

■ Ask the school what time your child starts on the first day and where to take them.

During the summer holidays ■ Show your child where the school is and talk about how you will get there.

■ Arrange play-times with other families whose children will be going to the same school as your child. It helps if your child knows another child at their school at the start of prep.

■ Practise the things your child will need to do to get ready for school (e.g. putting things in their bag, remembering to take a hat).

■ Confirm your before or after school care arrangements. Show your child where the outside school hours care facilities are and talk about how they will get there.

■ Visit your local library and read books with your child about starting school.

The first day of school ■ Make sure your child knows who will take them to school and pick them up on the first day.

■ Help your child to pack their school bag with a snack, drink, lunch and a hat.

■ Place a spare pair of underpants and a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Let your child know these clothes are in their bag in case of any accidents at school.

■ Put sunscreen on your child in the morning if it is needed.

■ Show your child where you will meet them at the end of the school day.

■ At the end of the day talk to your child about what happened at school.

The first year of school ■ Find out about what your child is learning at school. By doing this, you can support your child’s learning and find out how your child is adjusting to school.

■ If your child is having difficulty at school, talk to their teacher. Your child can also say what they think might help them.

■ Keep talking to your child about school. Ask them about their new experiences, what they like and what they find hard.

■ If your child attends an outside school hours care service, find a way of sharing your child’s school progress with the staff.

■ Share feedback about your child’s experience of starting school with the school and early childhood service.

■ Organise time for your child and their new friends to play together outside of school.

Bullying and the younger child YOUNG children are confused about bullying, but new research from the University of South Australia is providing important insights on how to prevent bullying by improving children’s understanding of the concept itself.

Trialled in four South Australian junior primary schools, the proof of concept study was conducted by bullying prevention experts Dr Lesley-Anne Ey and Associate Professor Barbara Spears from the University of South Australia, with funding from the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education (OMEP).

Despite limited research on understanding bullying in the early years, Dr Ey says there is evidence that bullying takes place in all forms from an early age. She says children have limited understanding of bullying and that more needs to be done to explicitly educate younger children about it so as to contribute to the prevention of lasting problems associated with these behaviours.

Dr Ey and Associate Professor Spears interviewed 99 children, aged 5-8 years, from four trial and two comparison junior primary schools to assess their understanding of bullying.

Teachers from the four trial schools worked collaboratively within their schools to develop and implement a tailored 10 lesson bullying prevention initiative to meet the needs of their children’s level of understanding.

Children who had been in the prevention initiative were more likely than those in comparison schools to recognise the concept of a single act of aggression in the nonbullying scenarios. They were also more likely to identify an intent to harm in images of bullying behaviour.

Before the prevention initiative, the children showed a limited grasp of bullying. While over half related it to being aggressive, very few understood other core features of bullying, such as repetition, intent to harm, and an imbalance of power. As such, they confused bullying and nonbullying acts of aggression, such as a once-off conflict or act of “meanness”.

Children in the four trial schools were asked what bullying is: 17% mentioned repeated behaviour, 14% mentioned intent to harm, and 4% mentioned an imbalance of power.

After the prevention initiative, 51% included repetition in their responses, 30% included an intent to harm, and 16% an imbalance of power.

The children were also shown cartoon images of play, bullying, and non-bullying aggression (such as a once-off conflict between kids). They were asked to decide whether or not each image depicted bullying.

After the initiative, although children still demonstrated some confusion about bullying and aggression only scenarios, they were much more likely to use the core concepts of bullying in their reasoning for why they thought the scenario was bullying. For instance, their mention of repeated behaviour when viewing cartoons depicting bullying, rose from 59%to 78%.

Dr Ey said she was surprised to see how quickly the children improved on their understanding of the core concepts for thinking about bullying - particularly the youngest children in the group. According to Dr Ey, these concepts are foundational for children to develop an accurate understanding of the issue. Such an understanding, in turn, is critical to prevention.

The 12 teachers who implemented the tailored prevention initiative all said they intended to use it again. Most found that it was easy to use and was very engaging for students, and the cocreation process was highly engaging for them. “[I learnt] more about what is going on in the lives of children with whom I work,” said one.

“This is such an important area to work sensitively with children.”

Associate Professor Spears said that if teachers use data about bullying from their own classes to inform their practice, they can identify the areas which they need to explicitly teach, creating a suite of lessons tailored to their contexts, and which align directly with the Australian Curriculum.

“This research has shown that when teachers construct a program specific to the needs of the children in their context, it works,” said Dr Ey. “What we have done here is just the tip of the iceberg. Children as young as five years old have been able to learn the key concepts of bullying in a very short amount of time.”

Further research to retest children’s knowledge after a period of time would strengthen these findings.

“If an anti-bullying program was implemented from reception and built upon each year, I believe that children would have a clear understanding about bullying by the end of junior primary.”
