MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk The COVID-19 situation is a developing one and the Free Times will do our best to keep the community informed of latest developments online as they come to hand - the situation is changing daily and we're sticking to the official government advice and not dealing in rumours, of which there are plenty.

I guess that assumes our governments at all levels know what they're doing, but it's a situation where many people will impose their own practices to avoid exposure to the virus.

Through all the waves of information - both formal and informal - to which we're all being exposed at present I think it's easy to forget some of the key messages around prevention. Good hand hygiene is a prime line of defence against this virus - it's a quick and simple exercise to perform many times a day.

Limiting or where possible avoiding non-essential direct contact with those most at risk of picking up the virus - the elderly especially - is a nobrainer.

Applications for postal votes closed on Monday of this week, with the ECQ saying this was "in accordance with the Local Government Electoral Act 2011".

"This deadline is established under the legislation for the election on 28 March and cannot be altered by the ECQ," the statement said.

"The ECQ will be implementing a range of new measures for people attending early voting centres and polling booths to vote in-person.

"This includes sourcing additional supplies of hand sanitiser for use by voters at polling booths.

"Voters are also encouraged to bring their own pen or pencil with them to vote as an additional hygiene precaution.

"The local government elections are proceeding in accordance with advice that only non-essential mass gatherings should be cancelled.

"Elections facilitate an essential service by providing for democratic representation for Queenslanders.

"However, we recognise that this is an extraordinary situation and are adapting our service model accordingly.

The Federal Government this week announced a $1.3 billion measure to support apprentices and trainees to "help businesses and local communities get past the challenges presented by coronavirus" Maranoa MP David Littleproud said.

"This assistance will support local businesses to manage cash-flow challenges and help small businesses retain their apprentices and trainees," Mr Littleproud said.

"The $1.3 billion measure - part of the broader $17.6 billion coronavirus stimulus package - will ensure up to 70,000 small businesses can keep around 117,000 apprentices and trainees across the country in work and training."

A 50 per cent wage subsidy of up to $21,000 will be available to small businesses which employ fewer than 20 full time employees, including those using a Group Training Organisation, to retain their apprentice or trainee.

The subsidy will also be available to businesses of any size and Group Training Organisations that re-engage an eligible apprentice or trainee who would otherwise lose their job.

Businesses can register to be assessed for eligibility from 2 April 2020. To be eligible for the wage subsidy the apprentice or trainee must have been in-training with a small business as at 1 March 2020.

No cases of Southern Downs region residents having contracted Coronavirus or COVID-19 were confirmed by Queensland Health at time of printing of the Free Times this week, despite rumours circulating in recent days.

At the start of the week the only upcoming event to be confirmed as having been cancelled due to the virus was the Warwick Show, which had been scheduled for this weekend. Tomorrow, Friday 20 March, is still a public holiday for Warwick area residents.

he future management of the Warwick Saleyards has emerged as a potentially key council election issue following comments made by current Mayor Tracy Dobie at a 'Meet The Candidates' event last week.

Operation and management of the Saleyards became the subject of a community campaign in 2017 and 2018 when it emerged the Southern Downs Regional Council was exploring the option of outsourcing management of or leasing the saleyards to a private operator.

The proposal went as far as the council having identified a 'preferred tenderer' to manage the Saleyards - whose identity was never publicly revealed - before the council backed down in the face of widespread and highly vocal opposition from the

community, the rural sector in particular.

At a Warwick Chamber of Commerce business breakfast with mayoral candidates held at the Warwick Golf Club on Tuesday 10 March Tracy Dobie answered a question

from the floor about her views on 'publicprivate partnerships' between the council and businesses as a way of generating new

revenue 'streams' for the council.

In her answer the mayor made a reference to the Warwick Saleyards being a "great example" of a "wonderful privatepublic enterprise into the future".

"There are enterprises across our region that would really benefit from Council being in partnership with the owner of those businesses, or businesses investing in a Council owned operation at the moment to make it more worthwhile for the community to invest in," the Mayor told the audience.

Cr Dobie also referred to "energy" and "waste management" as other potential areas for "public-private partnerships" in the future.

The Free Times this week asked Cr Dobie to clarify her statement in relation to the Warwick Saleyards, specifically if she supports re-investigation of the private management option, or full privatisation or sell-off of the facility.

HIGHWAY ACCESS THROUGH CUNNINGHAMS GAP The ongoing road closures at Cunninghams Gap are disruptive to our economy. Although acts of nature are out of our control, a future-facing vision of uninterrupted access to Southern Downs could be possible by lobbying State and Federal Government for a permanent solution.

I propose that one such solution could be in the form of a vehicle tunnel built through the mountain range. The tunnel could potentially include a pipeline and a rail link.

And finally, to have the guts to make the right decisions for the people I represent.

Cr Dobie provided the following response this week "The question that was asked was along the lines of whether or not Candidates supported public-private partnerships," Cr Dobie said.

"In my response I said Yes I did.

"I said that they are a great way of giving money back to those who have invested.

"I said there were several different examples - one would be where the community invests in an energy project, another may be something like the saleyards where those who use it also invest in it.

"I used it as an example nothing more.

"As you know the feedback from the users of the saleyards is that they want the saleyards to remain in Council ownership and that is what will happen.

"They do need to be upgraded and this Council has undertaken the development of a masterplan that looks at the benefits of upgrading in the current location (brownfield site) or moving to a new location (greenfield site).

"Once this plan is finalised it will be put out for public consultation.

"After that the brownfield or greenfield site will be agreed and a grant funding application submitted.

"I do not support the saleyards being sold or being put out for contracted management."

The master plan referred to by Cr Dobie is one prepared by external consultants commissioned by and provided to the council in 2019.

In late 2019 the Free Times asked the council to release the document to us, a request which was refused on the grounds it was 'commercial in confidence'.

We subsequently submitted a 'Right To Information' application to obtain the document, an application which since last December has been the subject of an external review - initiated by the council - with the Queensland Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC).

The Free Times has stated to the OIC that full release of the document is in the public interest but the review process is continuing and could take several months to resolve.

PREVIOUS BACKDOWN ...

In June 2018 the region's livestock producers rejoiced when Cr Dobie announced the Saleyards would remain council operated, at a packed public meeting at the Warwick Town Hall on Wednesday 6 June that year.

The Free Times this week asked the three other mayoral candidates - Vic Pennisi, Peter Kemp and Joe Doepel - to state their policy positions on future management and operation of the Warwick Saleyards.

Their responses are as follows -

VIC PENNISI 'preferred tenderer' to lease from or manage the Saleyards on behalf of the council had fallen through.

The announcement ended close to a year of uncertainty for users of the Warwick Saleyards, many of whom feared leasing the facility out to a private operator would have seen fees go through the roof. Users were also worried that both sellers and buyers could have been driven away to other saleyards or to online livestock sales.

Agents were also fearful of a massive spike in affiliation fees which could have forced them to shed staff.

The council at the time did not reveal the identity of the preferred tenderer, but given that agents had been shown a fee schedule proposed by Regional Livestock Exchanges (RLX) it was assumed they were the party concerned.

RLX operates saleyards at Gracemere, Tamworth, Inverell and several in Victoria.

Cr Dobie told the June 2018 public meeting the preferred tenderer in the end had been offered a "management agreement" as opposed to a lease.

She did not explain why but said the terms of the management agreement were "more restrictive" than those of a lease, and that the preferred tenderer had told the council it would not accept the council's terms.

It was understood at that time that the council's Saleyards Advisory Committee may have recommended the management agreement option so the council could continue to set the Saleyards fees, whereas a lessee would have been able to set their own.

When asked from the floor of the June 2018 public meeting if the council would consider proceeding down the leasing path again, Cr Dobie stated that would not happen "during the term of the current council".

She did say the Saleyards "must continue to pay their own way" and "there is always room for improvement".

Cr Dobie and SDRC chief executive officer David Keenan questioned the ability of the Saleyards to expand in the future given what they said was the floodprone status of vacant areas on the site. â—?

"I won't support selling off the Warwick Saleyards - it's as simple and as cut and dried as that.

"As far as external management is concerned if there was input from local people that they want to go down that path then it could be considered.

"But without that kind of input and desire for change I believe the Saleyards should be left as councilowned and council-operated.

"It's a facility that belongs to the people."

PETER KEMP "The iconic Warwick Saleyards has been an important part of our culture with many fathers bringing their sons to their first auction.

"I remember the excitement of hearing the auctioneer for the first time, talking so fast, in a language that sounded like English at 200 kph.

"My Grandfather, Alf Kemp, said, 'Don't shoo the flies or we may have bought a beast'.

"I must admit to being a bit nervous with all this action and moving animals - it was organised, fast-moving, and exciting.

"These are my memories and traditions of our local culture these traditions are important to me, many of those boys grew to be men, and now take their grandsons to experience a wonderful part of Australian life.

"The first sale at the current site was October 3rd 1961 with Lyle Grayson the Auctioneer.

"These saleyards were set up as a community service by the Council and continues to this day.

"As President of our local RAnGe Action Group, we were aware of moves to shift ownership to another entity, shortly after the last election refusal by Council to publish minutes of all meetings, and continuous rumours that did not seem to die.

"The cattlemen were rightly

alarmed when the Council announced an interest by an outside company to take over the operation - this uncertainty continues to this day, and indicates a desire to sell our saleyards despite all the protests.

"Recent comments by incumbents is fuelling the uncertainty.

"The operation is profitable and has been from the time it was built - it has never been any burden upon the ratepayers and always made a profit.

"I promise the saleyards are to be retained as they are, in Council ownership, and continue the traditions of our forefathers into the future.

"This is the heart of who Australians are, an iconic institution in Warwick, and it will stay that way.

"Vote for me, I will fix it - just give me a brand new Council."

JOE DOEPEL "It (private management or selling off the Saleyards) was one of the main reasons I decided to stand.

"The Saleyards makes a net profit of $145,000 a year - why would you want to sell that off if it makes money?

"As far as I'm concerned the Saleyards is a no-go zone.

"I think it's fair enough for the council to look at partnering with business if there's opportunities with things like rubbish and recycling down the track.

"And if the council has other assets like spare vacant blocks of land well fine, sell those or lease them out.

"But the Saleyards is an existing operation - it has to be protected and it's not theirs (council's) to sell.

"And the same with private management - anyone running them would need to increase fees and charges in order to make a profit.

"People who use the Saleyards pay into an infrastructure fund to improve them - there are a few things that need doing but it's basically a good set-up.

"Warwick brings in cattle from far out in western Queensland and from central New South Wales.

"I myself have found and a lot of other people find prices for cattle at Warwick are consistently 20 cents more (per kilo) than say Toowoomba." â—?

COUNCIL’S LATEST WATER UPDATE SOUTHERN DOWNS REGIONAL COUNCIL WEEKLY WATER UPDATE - CURRENT AS OF THIS WEEK CURRENT LEVELS AND EXPECTED RUN OUT DATES

89.9% and 1948 ML · Based on the latest data and current targeted usage (100 l/p/d), Leslie Dam will take approximately 30 months to reach it's minimum operating level. Connolly Dam will be able to supply water for 25 months based on current water usage. This includes the supply of water to Stanthorpe and will be dependent on water quality.

Stanthorpe · Current level and volume 19.3% and 398 ML. · Water remains in Storm King Dam as a contingency for emergency events and to provide a habitat for aquatic life. Based on current usage, Storm King Dam would reach it's minimum operating level in 4 months if water for Stanthorpe was being sourced from the dam.

Warwick · Leslie - current level and volume 14.42% and 15,321 ML · Connolly - current level and volume

· During the February Council meeting, Council resolved to relax water restrictions across the region to critical level of 100 l/p/d · Critical water restrictions will be enforced

by Council through the Southern Downs Region, including the township of Jennings in NSW. · The target for residential properties is 100 litres/person/day (l/p/d) · Council will continue to assist residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption.

WATER RESTRICTIONS

· Drinking water supplied by Southern Downs Regional Council is only available for use by Southern Downs Regional Council residents. · Whilst some rainfall has been received in parts of the region, critical water restrictions remain in place. Council urges people to do all they can to meet the critical level water consumption target of 100 l/p/d. · Warwick around 120 l/p/d (Feb 2020) 111 l/p/d (Jan 2020) · Stanthorpe around 149 l/p/d (Feb 2020) 138 l/p/d (Jan 2020) · Water must not be taken from a fire hydrant without the permission of the service provider unless it is for the purpose of fire fighting.

WATER RELEASE FROM LESLIE DAM BY SUNWATER · As a holder of a high priority water allocation, Council is entitled to use the

last 15,000 ML of the Leslie Dam water for town water supply. · Water allocation above 15,000 ML dam volume is managed by Sunwater in accordance with the user agreements between Sunwater and licence holders.

Sunwater controls how and when this water is released.

OPTIONS REPORT Stanthorpe emergency supply · Full time water carting is still underway from Connolly Dam raw water line in Warwick to Stanthorpe · Water is transferred into 2 x 1 megalitre tanks which will gravity feed the water into the existing raw water line at the wall of Storm King Dam. · Based on daily use of 1.6ML per day, between 40 and 50 truckloads of water per day are required. · Council upgraded the turn into Storm King Dam access road from Eukey Road, as well as Storm King Dam access road.

· Additional treatment units are in operation at Stanthorpe Water Treatment Plant to treat the water from Connolly Dam. · Filling points are now being used to fill with raw water from the Connolly Dam raw water line. · The State Government has committed $2.4 million to the upgrade works as detailed above. The State Government is also paying the cartage costs of $800,000 per month ongoing until February 2021. · It is important that the water continues to be conserved and that the community remains vigilant in their water use to ensure the minimal amount of water is carted and the transportation costs are kept down. · Contingency arrangements are in place for water carting to minimise any risk to Stanthorpe water supply from unforeseen events such as road closures due to bushfire, road accidents or to manage weather driven water quality changes. · Water carting to Stanthorpe will continue until a sufficient water level in Storm King Dam is restored.

Hot on the heels of its extremely successful participation in the biggest ever Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney in October, the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band has been given yet another amazing opportunity: it has been invited to travel to Russia in April-May 2020 to participate in the two-week long Peace for World Festival.

The 2020 Peace for World Festival marks the 75th anniversary of peace in Europe after World War II, with the most monumental event being The March of the

Immortal Regiment in Moscow on May 9. During the commemoration, up to one million Russians are expected to participate in this march, carrying portraits of their fallen ancestors, and 250 million people will watch the event on TV. The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band is honoured to represent the Southern Downs and Australia when it participates in The March of the Immortal Regiment, in what will be the biggest audience for which the band has ever played.

FOCUS ON ‌ Southern Downs "We are thrilled to have this incredible opportunity as the only Australian band at the festival," said Chris Donaldson, Warwick Thistle Pipe Band pipe major. "The REMT in Sydney was a great developmental experience for all band members, who range in age from 10 to over 80. In addition to learning new music and practicing marching drills ahead of the event, the Tattoo gave players the opportunity to tune up, play with and meet members of the international pipe bands. Those players going to Russia will be able to build on the Tattoo experience to further enhance their performance skills."

In addition to participating in The March of the Immortal Regiment, a key objective for the band's tour of Russia is to engage in cross-cultural activities. The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band performances will give Russians the opportunity to interact with a group of Australians playing Scottish music, and band members will have a once-in-alifetime opportunity to spend time with Russian people and learn more about the country's music, culture and traditions.

Participating band members are working hard to build their music repertoire, and their fitness. During the trip, the band will be expected to play in concerts of at least 45 minutes of non-repeated music and also to march and perform over distances of between 1km and 4km on most days. Over the coming months Warwick residents and visitors may see and hear the band marching around Leslie Park and also Allman Park, building their playing and marching stamina.

Supported by the Pipe Bands Association of Queensland (PBA Qld), the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band will join The Pipes and Drums of Christchurch City (New Zealand),

the OzScot Dance Team (Australia) and the Lewis Merthyr Band (UK), among others, in Russia.

Andrew Roach, Chairman of PBA Qld Branch, said: "I'm extremely excited for the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band to have been invited to tour Russia in 2020. The band has shown extraordinary growth and development over the past 2-3 years. Pipe Bands are not always about competition and taking a band on such a unique opportunity as this tour will continue to develop Warwick Thistle Pipe Band into an important part of the Queensland Branch's Pipe Band scene," Roach continued. "I have no doubt they will have an exciting tour, make new friends, and experience things that they would never see on any normal Pipe Band Tour! I'm looking forward to hearing their stories upon return."

The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band is following in the footsteps of pipe bands from Australia and other countries who have previously visited Russia to participate in similar events, including regimental pipe bands from Scotland, UK, Australia's Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipes and Drums, and the Transvaal Scottish Pipes and Drums from South Africa.

The band is working hard on fundraising efforts to send its players to Russia, including barbecues at Bunnings, raffles and market stalls. It is extremely grateful for the support of over 25 local businesses, including major sponsors McDonald's, John Dee, Warwick Credit Union, The Point Hotel, Warwick Caledonian Society, King Street Barber, Carey's Abattoir, Protera, Warwick Solar, Wickhams, and Southern Downs Realty.

‘SACRED SPACE’ BLESSED, OPENED Last Friday 13 March a new Sacred Space was opened and blessed by St Mary's Catholic Parish Priest Fr Franco.

This unique Sacred Space created on the upper campus of St Mary's School, Warwick is an area for students to sit and read, talk to friends, take time out or just enjoy the surroundings of this meaningful area.

The Sacred Space was created by three significant contributions. Aboriginal artist, Pete Mulcahy painted four story poles about the Warwick area. Pete worked with parents and students from St Mary's School to make these stories.

The four story poles represent: · the bird's song which sings out and visualises the most ancient of song lines (green pole) · acknowledgement and celebration of Warwick's connection to the world's ancient gathering, the Bunya Festival (yellow pole) · the Condamine River, which gave life to the region, the scene depicts hunters, and shown at the centre is a representation of the ancient scare tree dotted along the bank of the Condamine (blue pole) · the plant world of Australia, the bottlebrush, native gum, flowering wattle, eucalypt leaves and blade grass (red pole). This was the domain of women, these and thousands of other plants were prepared as medicines, food, poisons and as fibres in handcrafted creations. This pole celebrates the feminine in people and

nature.

Another aspect of the Sacred Space are eleven intricate mosaics that were created by local artists Nathan Charles, Dylan Charles and Brenda Parsons. The mosaics depict aspects of Aboriginal life before and after colonisation by Europeans.

Finally, there is also a contribution to the space by many St Mary's students. Those who were present last year for NAIDOC celebrations painted a river rock and these make up the rocks in the river in the Sacred Space. (image attached) Special guests in attendance included Mrs Delphine Charles, mother to Nathan and Aunt to Dylan, the mosaic artists and Mrs Brenda Parsons, local aboriginal artist who was a mosaic artist.

ENDORSEMENT STATEMENT The Committee and Members of the Stanthorpe Sports Association make up a not for profit Incorporated Association which is responsible for organizing and running sporting and social events at the McGlew Street Complex and have a membership base of over 2,000 people plus visiting clubs and all local school students.

The Stanthorpe Sports Association has had a difficult and draining 3 Years which has taken an emotional and heartbreaking toll on its committee and members alike. It has lead us to the decision to investigate and publicize the results of a question that we asked all new council candidates.

TRACTOR TREK TAKES IN OUR REGION Around two dozen classic tractors - some restored and some works in progress wound their way through the countryside east of Warwick the weekend before last on the Grainshed Machinery Group's 2020 'Tractor Trek'.

The event was the first of its kind for the group, which combines those with a passion for tractors and old machinery at its base at the historic Freestone grain shed on Freestone Road. The trekkers - many of whom came from outside the region - headed from Freestone to Queen Mary Falls on the Saturday, including a stopover at the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park for morning smoko, with an overnight stay at Killarney and then back to Freestone via Swan Creek on the Sunday.

The Grainshed Machinery Group Inc was formed in June 2019 by a group of like-minded old machinery enthusiasts interested in preserving farm machinery, stationery motors and tractors while enjoying the company of the people with similar interests. WATCH FOR FALL ARMYWORM The Southern Downs is home to a host of renowned agriculturists and growers.

Invasive species present a distinct threat to these primary producers. A recently detected pest that threatens Australian industry is the Fall Armyworm.

Fall Armyworm was first detected on two Torres Strait islands in January 2020. The first mainland detection in Australia was at Bamaga in February 2020.

Since then, Fall Armyworm has been determined to be more widespread than first thought and producers are strongly encouraged to increase their monitoring for this pest.

The original outbreak infested a crop of corn, however, Fall Armyworms are capable of decimating forage or pasture crops as well. Vigilance is particularly important given the Southern Downs region is known for its agricultural and pastoral industries.

Fall Armyworm can be difficult to distinguish from native species, however, it is critically important that this species is not allowed to run rampant. As with all pests, Fall Armyworm will continue to feed and decimate a food source until it is exhausted before moving onto a new host.

Fall Armyworm has spread to over 60 countries in just under three years. The potential impact on Australian industry could be massive; Fall Armyworm can cause sudden crop damage and collapse, in some cases growers will lose their entire crop within 24 hours.

Symptoms of Fall Armyworm include leaf damage such as pinholes, windowing, tattered leaf margins, skeletisation and defoliation of plants. Growers should also look out for tiny larvae, less than 1mm, that are more active at night, eating pin holes and transparent windows in leaves and bigger larvae grazing on leaves, stems, trunk and fruit, and leaving behind insect excrement.

In grass-like plants, larvae are often in plant whorls where leaves branch from the stalk. As these symptoms can be similar to other pests and Fall Armyworm can be easy to overlook as it appears incredibly similar to native species, it is important that growers take extra steps to educate themselves about Fall Armyworm.

The Queensland Government has a range of materials to assist in the identification of

Fall Armyworm. For growers and producers specifically information is available at farmbiosecurity.com.au, biosecurity.qld.gov. au, and cottoninfo.com.au. There is also the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.

If you suspect that you have found Fall Armyworm, please contact the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries immediately on 13 25 23 and photograph the site and insects, if possible. ●

NEW LIFE FOLLOWS THE BUSHFIRES I just love the way our native trees regenerate after fire. The look of the shoots so quickly on the blackened trunks gives hope of a speedy recovery. The variety of colours in the new shoots is so beautiful, from bright lime green to a darker green with red tips and many other colours, depending on the variety of eucalypt and the area in which it is growing.

I picked some beautiful blue grey new shoots from a burnt mugga ironbark at the weekend. I love the look and smell of the bunch of leaves in an earthenware vase on the dining table. The whole house just smells so great when I come home after it has been shut up all day - so refreshing, so Australian! But anyone who reads this column is well aware that I'm a sucker for the Australian bush!

Mugga Ironbark/eucalyptus sideroxylon, is also known as red ironbark and is native to the eastern states of Australia. It can apparently have white or pink flowers - it is the pink flowering variety that I know, with its slender blue grey leaves. The new growth has lovely round leaves that mature to the slender leaves with which we are familiar.

Allan Cunningham recorded the name in Thomas Mitchell's Journal of an "Expedition into the Interior of Tropical Australia" in 1848 but did not include a description. The first description of this lovely tree is in 1887 -"sideroxylon" comes from the Greek words

meaning iron and wood - very accurate given its density.

It is a very valuable tree yielding nectar for honey production, essential oils and very durable timber. It is hard and dense, burns really well and was favoured by bakers in wood fired ovens. It is dense and fine grained and polishes beautifully, so is used widely now as a furniture timber. If however, like my mother was, you are prone to rearranging furniture, it is very heavy!

The density is about 1150kg per square metre. It is also ideal for heavy engineering

work, railway sleepers and fence posts. Posts will last in the ground for 100 years so make sure your fence is where you want it to be!

Due to its density it is the only species of eucalypt that will not float!

It provides great habitat and nectar for native birds and is one of the most reliable honey producers.

Beautiful tree, beautiful leaves, spectacular black/dark brown bark, beautiful white through to pink flowers what more could we want for a medium sized tree for a large garden - one more I would plant if I had the room and a gardener to take care of it all!!

My lawn is recovering quickly and well. For all its faults, kikuyu does recover quickly, especially at this time of the year and certainly gives me exercise mowing it!

Unfortunately it also tends to send shoots into the garden but a paint brush and a little weed killer takes care of that rather quickly.

I am even getting excited about the prospect of maybe being able to get my proposed corner garden under way when water restrictions are eased some more.

I planted some more vincas in a couple of other garden beds this week so that next summer I should have colour right across the front of my block regardless of the weather and even if I am home or travelling.

The other wonder plant, of course, is old fashioned white Alyssum/Sweet Alice.

It has come up thickly everywhere and will be filling in corners with a cloud of white very quickly. Once more lovely childhood memories from a neighbour's garden.

I am also pleased to see the beautiful cream spires of bells on the Yuccas everywhere around town. They are a bit earlier than I am used to but flowering has probably been prompted by the rain received recently.

Yuccas are far from a favourite with me unless well cared for and then they are a delight. The leaves are sharp and painful and often dangerously at eye level. The dead leaves look unsightly. They certainly have their place and the flowers are really lovely but maybe they need pruning/lopping a lot more often than they seem to get in most situations.

I walked outside at night recently and was amazed at the beautiful perfume from the gardenia that has survived the dry and is blooming beautifully since the rain. I must have planted it in just the right spot, more by luck than good management or knowledge, as it seems to be thriving.

I think I'll try my luck again and plant another one near my front door as soon as we are again allowed to water gardens.

At present there is a rather sad looking lavender there. I do love lavender and will plant some more in other spots, again, when we are allowed to water gardens! ●

SPORTING WORLD ADAPTS As this edition of Spin and the SFT goes to press the world internationally nationally and locally seems to have gone quite mad.

Only a week ago after attending the MCG for the Women's T20 World Cup final Coronavirus was on the periphery of everyone's thoughts. One week later and it is impacting every facet of our lives.

NRL fans have been quietly gearing up for a stellar NRL season and now face the real possibility that like so many other sports their competition will be suspended.

The one thing playing in the NRL's favour has to be the man at the helm, Chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission Peter V'Landy's. There surely is no Sporting Administrator in the country better credentialed to handle this unfolding crisis.

V'Landy's was at the forefront of the Equine Influenza outbreak in 2007 which looked likely the racing industry to its knees.

Of course this time round he wears two hats; chairman of the NRL Commission and chief executive and board member of Racing NSW. The Racing industry moved quickly last week with racing at all venues going ahead behind closed doors as the industry enters the lucrative Autumn Carnival period and that will continue this week and indefinitely. So at least you can watch your races and still have a bet.

The fate of the NRL is still a very fluid situation. How long will it be sustainable to have the NZ Warriors based in Australia is just one of many questions still to be resolved.

This weekend the NRL has chartered planes to fly players on individual flights rather than commercial flights. They will return home straight after games to limit the possibility of catching the virus.

V'Landy's plan is to minimise the risk as much as possible. In the end in sport as in general life it will be up to the individual player or person in the street how vigilant they are.

V'Landy's said, "As long as the player is educated and reduces social activity we'll be in a good position." That of course is putting great deal of faith and responsibility in the hands of individual players. Don't know that is a sure bet based on previous form.

People may not like V'Landy's attitude or early handling of the situation but he has the runs on the board and now faces a headache of cosmic proportions that frankly no one else would touch with a barge pole.

What the future holds for the NRL and anything and everything else we know and love is anybody's guess.

In the interim as the world of sport and the world in general appears to be spinning out of control, I can only offer these recommendations.

Be nice to each other; take care of each other and please stop stashing loo paper.

As I understand the situation, it won't help you, the NRL, horse racing or any other sport you follow from catching this nasty little beast.

BIRTHDAY BASH A group of 24 bowlers at the Summit Club last Saturday played for the Phil Davis Birthday Trophy. Two games of three bowl triples were played over 10 ends. This weekend the Summit Bowls Club hosts the Men's District pairs which will be played over two days.

Another date for bowlers to mark in the diary is the Summit Men's Single Championship will be held on Saturday March 28 and Sunday March 29.

SIMMERING MARCH MEDAL Stanthorpe golfers played for the March monthly medal last Saturday and the event attracted a good field of members and some visiting API golfers.

Aaron Simmers played up to his best scoring a nett 67 which was good enough to grab a win. The win may cause the handicapper to take a good look at his card.

Rino Piovesan finished with the next best score of nett 70 to claim the Runner's Up prize. Brendon Barker continued his good recent form and finished his round with the Best Gross score of 76 and the least putts (23). He also continued collecting balls for pro pins at 1/10 and 9/18.

No March madness for Ladies' winner Trish Fittock who finished with a score of nett 71 four shots clear of the field. Fittock also picked up the Ladies' putting award. A count back was required before Lorraine Evans was handed the runner's up prize and Neta Thouard was relegated to determine the winner of the Best Gross - Nikki Waterworth taking the honours.

Pin shots went the way of Matt Waterworth (3), Aaron Simmers (12) and Scott Constable (17). Waterworth also collected the remaining ball for the pro pin at 5/14.

There were no takers for the ladies pin at three however Nikki Waterworth had best approach at 12 and Sandra Morris at 17.

In the run down, it was a ball for scores of nett 74 and better for the men and nett 79

and better for the ladies.

The March Medal was sponsored by Alex Vale who unfortunately could not be at the club to present the trophies but his support is greatly appreciated.

This week the club has scheduled an individual stroke event which will also serve as the second round of the Pike Trophy.

The event will be sponsored by Stephen and Sandra Kay. There is a time sheet on display on the board at the club and tee off is at the usual time of 11.30am.

MAUREEN BATES MEMORIAL POPULAR The annual Maureen Bates Memorial Golf Day was held on Sunday and there were plenty of golfers on the Stanthorpe course for the popular event.

Brendon Barker has been in a purple patch of form in recent weeks and he continued the excellent play in this event.

He partnered Hunter Murphy and the pair claimed a win ahead of runners up Ivan Jurris and Terry Byrnes.

The Run-downs went to Matt and Nikki Waterworth and Angelo Maugeri and Aaron Simmers. Pin shots went to S Stewart (12) Norm Steele (17).

The multi draw raffle was popular thanks to the many people who donated prizes.

Once again Rex Bates and the Bates family provided wonderful prizes for the winners and runners up to round out

another successful event.

Sporters return to normal on Sunday with tee off between 7.30-8.00am.

Remember visitors are always made welcome.

TANNY A CLASSIC The final Round of the Tanny Classic 2020 No1 was decided on March 6. Following six weeks of stiff competition it all came down to the final round. It was great to see the young guns rise to the top and take the money.

Overall winner with 19 points was Ryan Boal who had been in the mix throughout the competition. Jessie "J.Wal" Wallace was breathing down the winner's neck finishing in second spot with 18 points while the Ole fella Fritzy was closing with 17. Little Myrtle was not too far off the pace finishing with a credible 15 points. The Big fella Coire took out the cash for last prize with a hopeless score of nine points.

After a vote it was decided to start Tanny 2020 No 2 on Friday 13/3/20.

It was another great night of fun with a side serve of bowls. The winners were Ashton Costello, Marcus Stewart, Darcy 21 Meek & Fritzy. They defeated Lochy Fritz, Chris "Shaggs" O'Mara, Pricey and Thommo 10-7 and are off to a flying start.

Cozzie was well pleased winning the Spider and pocketing the $25 prize money.

There was Kelly Pool after bowls and again it was Rossco and Pricey cleaning up.

Each winning two games. Rossco seemed surprised but Pricey is reminding everyone how good he is. Need some opponents to bring their "A" game this week. Tanny Bowls club on Friday night is becoming a "must do".

ENTERTAINING FINISHES Golf Croquet turned up entertaining games last week. Pauline Inglis (5) and Peter Goodsir (4) hit the courts last week playing a close game against Janet Raub and Sharyn Roser. Both teams were neck and neck until Roser ran the final hoop for a total of six.

Combined with her partner's score of five the pair secured an 11-9 win. Di Wren (7) and Liz Ellway (6) raced away to an easy win over Shirley Evans. The final score 13-4. In his second game Peter Goodsir partnered Di Wren and the pair played very well.

Goodsir scored eight hoops and his partner five giving them a 13-8 win over Janet Raub (5) and Judy Locke (3). Judy Locke may not have been on the winning team however she was very excited when she scored a hole in one.

Pauline Inglis and Shirley Evans played Sharyn Roser in a game which saw Inglis playing very well. She scored a hole in one and a personal best of six hoops while her partner Shirley Evans added two. The pair

got away to a good lead early however Sharyn managed to secure a win on the last hoop.

NUMBERS LOW PLAY GOOD Illness kept numbers to a minimum for the Ricochet games in Stanthorpe last week.

Sharyn Roser took a healthy lead in the opening game and held on throughout the game to score 22-12 over Carol Verwey and Andrea Denkewitz. Denekwitz had one run of two while Roser had two runs of two and one of three.

Players were battling very windy condition which hampered play and sometimes but only rarely assisted.

SEMI FINALISTS DECIDED The finalists for the Stanthorpe Cricket 2019/20 season were confirmed following the completion of last weekend's fixtures.

Minor Premiers, RSL progress directly to the Grand final in two weeks while their opponent will be decided following the clash between Valleys and Wanderers in the Semi Final on Saturday.

Tenterfield were forced to forfeit their final game of the season giving Wanderers a head start in the race to the semi final.

Much however depended on the result of the game between RSL and South's and it was a contest.

South's won the toss and batted first.

Opener Ben Staley scored 34 before he was caught and bowled by Duane Lihou. His opening partner Tom Bonner (3) was out cheaply and was soon followed by Liam Lanza (3). The RSL attack had the batsmen tied down and midway through the innings South's found themselves four wickets down with just 81 runs on the board.

Sachepal Singh (58) and Matt Hendry (21) came together and put on a much needed partnership of 65 in the middle order. Their partnership contributed greatly to the total of 5/154 at the end of the innings. Will Dowie took two wickets however it was Duane Lihou who put the brakes on the batsmen. He finished with only one wicket from an eight over spell that cost only 14 runs.

In reply Jason Lawer top scored for RSL with a well earned 46 as his side steadily chipped away at the required total.

Their job made so much easier thanks to the South's bowlers who contributed a 40 wides and five no balls to the RSL total.

This has been a worrying trend over the whole of the season.

RSL reached the total midway through the 37th over.

Tom Furness was the major wicket taker.

His figures 3/30 but he also bowled 10 wides in his spell. Ned O'Reilly added some spice to the game taking two late wickets but the South's season had unfortunately run its course and they can now begin planning 2021.

The RSL win provided Wanderers a saloon passage into Saturday's semi final where Valleys will start hot favourites.

Neither team played last weekend and much will depend on how each team approaches Saturday's game. Wanderers have the capability to beat any team on any day while Valleys held premiership favouritism until the odd surprise loss and a couple of washouts upset the apple cart. They are sure to be on their game on Saturday and fielding a strong side.

The TRL has taken this action while waiting for advice from the QRL regarding the viability of games for the remainder of the season. Further information will be made available to officials, clubs, players and fans as soon as they come to hand.

It is believed that the QRL may postpone all its major and grass root competitions until June due to the ongoing Coronavirus crisis.

The QRL board of directors met on Tuesday night to discuss several options around rugby league in Queensland. This includes decisions surrounding the Intrust Super Cup, the women's BHP Premiership,

and Hastings Deering's Colts, the Mal Meninga Cup and all community and local football.

The PNG Hunters have been kept in Queensland in a bid to play Round two of the Intrust Super Cup however it remains unclear whether any competitions will continue past this weekend.

BRIDGE AT CIVIC CENTRE Bridge players met on Thursday at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre for their weekly Bridge games and played a three and a half table Howell. Carole Lihou and Joy Newman were the successful pair taking the win. In second place John Fernie and Helen Reeves rounded out the placings in third place.

RUGBY AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES PLANS On Tuesday Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle penned an open letter to rugby stakeholders to provide an update on Rugby Australia's response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Like other codes Castle said RA put the health and safety of players, staff, volunteers and the entire Rugby community continues as their number one priority.

SANZAAR announced its decision to suspend the Vodafone Super Rugby season following the completion of Round Seven last weekend.

While as fans we all understand these are unprecedented times, supporters of the Queensland Reds will be bitterly disappointed with the suspension of the season after the Reds finally hit their straps in recent weeks.

In a further upset to the Rugby community, a small number of people from the Rugby Sevens program showed flulike symptoms over the weekend and as a result access for visitors to the Rugby HQ in Moore Park will be restricted over coming weeks. Fortunately superstar Charlotte Caslick was far away from that drama appearing in Stanthorpe at the long awaited Rugby League carnival in Stanthorpe.

Following a meeting of Rugby Australia and the State and Territory Member Unions, a decision was made to postpone Community Rugby until the first week of May, effective immediately.
