New home at last

By Jed Lanyon Coldstream CFA is set to move forward with plans to build a new fire station in a move that is 11 years in the making.

After several ‘false starts’, Coldstream captain Sean Bethell said talks have progressed between the brigade and the CFA where he hopes works can begin by July.

He said the CFA purchased a block of land on 7 Killara Road, Coldstream, 11 years ago “We originally had the station built by brigade members and the public back in 1962. It was a good design back in the day because we used tankers that are much smaller than what we have today.

“Over the years, we’ve had to accommodate more and more volunteers and that comes with more equipment.”

While the station received several modifications across to accommodate larger trucks and newer equipment, Mr Bethell said it’s time for a new station to be constructed.

“With a brand new station, there’s going to be a lot of safety improvements,” he said.

The new brigade will feature three drivethrough bays meaning CFA members will not be forced to reverse their large vehicles into the tight spaces of the current driveway and station shed.

Mr Bethell said they will also have their protective equipment housed in a purpose built change room away from the carcinogenic diesel fumes emitted by their vehicles in the station.

Mr Bethell said the community will benefit as they will be able to respond to incidents quicker as they had instances where their car park had been blocked due to visitors at neighbouring businesses and a nearby bus stop.

“People are starting to see the final designs that are coming up and they’re pretty happy to see it finally going through.”

Mr Bethell said a large meeting room will allow Coldstream CFA to host nearby theory training sessions for new recruits across the Yarra Valley and beyond.

“It will be utilised not only by our brigade but by the group of brigades that are around us.”

Chimbu, the littlest ’roo Healesville Sanctuary keepers are celebrating the arrival of Chimbu, a brand new treekangaroo who has emerged from his mum’s pouch.

Chimbu, a rare Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo, is named after an area in Papua New Guinea where his wild cousins live.

He’s just over six months old, and can be seen by visitors to the Sanctuary in the treekangaroo enclosure with his mum Mani.

“Chimbu will mostly stay in his mum’s pouch for about ten months,” said keeper Katherine Sarris, “but he will need milk for about 12.”

“When he’s too big to fit all the way back in the pouch, he’ll just stick his head in so he can get milk.”

As the name suggests, tree-kangaroos climb and live in trees. Their long forearms and powerful claws are well adapted to clinging and jumping among tree branches, and their strong tails are used for balancing.

Ms Sarris said Chimbu is inquisitive, if a little cautious. “Whenever his mum is eating something he’ll try to sneak a bite of it.” Ms Sarris said.

“When he gets out of the pouch he like to investigate his environment, but he won’t go

too far from mum at this point.”

Goodfellow’s Tree-kangaroos can be found in the rugged central mountain ranges of Papua New Guinea.

While there are no current data on wild numbers of this species, it is thought that less than 2000 remain.

“Zoos Victoria is part of an international breeding program,” explained Ms Sarris. “Mani came to us from Canberra, and she was paired up with Bagam, who came from Germany.

“These two individuals, who are as un-related as possible, were paired up to produce joeys for the program.”

Tree-kangaroos in the wild are threatened by habitat loss and hunting. Healesville Sanctuary has a captive breeding program for

Chimbu and Mani.

They are ideal ambassadors for Zoos Victoria conservation partnership with the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program in north-east PNG, which is conserving the closely-related Matschie’s Tree-kangaroo and many other species.

The program is embedded in the local community, supporting a sustainable future for the people living in the Program’s more than 50 villages.

Zoos Victoria works with its partners to combine local community development with biodiversity conservation.

Drink in Merlot, the adorable Kangaroo Island joey After months of caring for bushfire victims, Healesville Sanctuary is celebrating the arrival of a beautiful new Kangaroo Island joey.

Little Merlot was born around seven months ago but has only recently started exploring the world outside her mum’s pouch. She can now be seen hopping around Kangaroo Country at the Sanctuary with her mum Merle.

Kangaroo keeper Katherine Sarris says Merlot is curious and occasionally mischievous, and loves spending time with (and sometimes bothering) the other members of her mob.

“Merlot, our little Kangaroo Island joey, likes going up to some of the other kangaroos in the mob and saying hi with little nose sniffs,” Ms Sarris said.

“She’s also quite confident around people.”

Kangaroo Island Kangaroos are sometimes mistaken for wallabies as they are smaller than

many other kangaroos, but are a sub-species of the Western Grey Kangaroo.

cent bushfires. Ms Sarris said wildlife agencies are still assessing the full impact on animals and plants.

Flags flying high

Healesville Environmental Watch Inc (HEWI) held a clean-up day at Everard Park on Sunday 1 March with great results.

HEWI project facilitator Karen Garth said it was their biggest turnout to date with over 30 volunteers coming along to help pick up rubbish in the community.

HEWI managed to collect 11 bags of litter, with six of those bags being recyclables and five being general rubbish.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish presented Healesville Primary School students with brand new Australian and Indigenous flags to display at the school.

Cultural education teacher Brooke Wandin said, “If the children are learning about respecting First Nation’s cultures, then I think it’s appropriate to have the flags visible. I think it’s important for the community to see the flags and see that visual recognition.”

Court halts logging

By Jed Lanyon A Supreme Court injunction has forced VicForests to temporarily halt logging activity in 13 coupes across Victoria, including in Toolangi, Marysville, Powelltown, Noojee and Warburton.

Conservation group Wildlife of The Central Highlands (WOTCH) won its case against VicForests in a bid to protect threatened species habitat from logging following the unprecedented summer bushfires.

WOTCH, represented by Environmental Justice Australia, argued that logging fire-affected threatened species habitat is unlawful until the conclusion of government bushfire biodiversity responses, which could place further protections on threatened species.

“We have brought this legal action so that threatened species like the Greater Glider and the Powerful Owl, which have lost much of their remaining habitat in the recent bushfires, are not pushed further towards extinction by logging,” Philip Marshall of WOTCH said.

“The 13 coupes protected today are home to threatened species affected by the bushfires and were already being logged or had chainsaws on their doorstep.”

VicForests said it was assessing the Supreme Court decision and that it would consider the outcome of the proceedings and make further comment in due course.

The Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) called for the state government to act and warned that the timber industry was on the brink of disaster.

“The government can’t sit on their hands on this one. CFMEU national secretary Michael O’Connor said.

“If they don’t act, the industry will collapse and collapse quickly.”

The union referred to the issue as a loophole that was being exploited by anti-timber activists in the courts and urged the Victorian government to act.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said it was disappointing to see so many examples of people excessively speeding across the long weekend.

Over the four-day operation, 209 drug driving offences were recorded. This is on top of 257 offences recorded for drink driving.

A driver, motorcyclist and horse rider were also added to the number of lives lost for 2020, taking the state’s total to 50 people.

Tragedy also struck another family this long weekend with a horrific incident involving a falling tree and a car, killing three people in the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday.

“You cannot begin to imagine how these families are feeling, not to mention the police who had the task of delivering the news,” AC Murphy said.

“Even though the operation is over, we urge drivers to stay safe on the road.”

More than 8060 traffic offences were detected during Operation Arid including: 176 disqualified/suspended drivers, 265 unlicensed drivers, 745 unregistered vehicles, 3413 speeding offences, 434 mobile phone offences, 533 disobey signs/signals, 121 vehicle impounds, 200 seatbelt offences.

Operation Arid ran from 12.01am on Friday 6 March to 11.59pm on Monday 9 March 2020.

Bike accident WOTCH and other local environmental groups have now turned their attention towards coupes adjacent to those which fell under the injunction, including the Zinger coupe near the Kalatha Giant Tree in Toolangi and on Warburton’s Mount Bride.

“Vicforests are voracious. A week ago we were elated by the news that an area on Mount Bride called ’Apu’ - which we fought to protect from scheduled logging - had been added to a court injunction. Immediately after this announcement, Vicforests declared they would log an area just around the corner on Ezard track,” said Warburton local Nicole Fox. A letter directed to the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, from Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum president Steve Meacher described the logging activity as ‘senseless desecration’.

“It is beyond bizarre that VicForests would now decide to commence destruction of this area of forest, important to two critically endangered and at least one listed species, while the full impacts of this summer’s devastating bushfires are yet to be assessed.”

A statement from VicForests said that harvesting would not affect the Kalatha Giant Tree and that extensive and detailed work had been undertaken to identify and protect forest values and the species’ habitats in the coupe.

“The coupe is almost entirely regrowth after the 1939 fires but contains some legacy trees from 1926 and 1906 fires. The coupe does contain some individual older trees which do not constitute old growth stands but these trees will be preserved and protected from harvest activities for the long-term,” the statement reads.

Extra police bound for Yarra Ranges

By Taylah Eastwell The Yarra Ranges and surrounding communities will soon benefit from Victoria Police’s most significant investment in regional and suburban policing, with 51 additional officers headed for Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah police divisions.

Eight new officers are set to be deployed to the Yarra Ranges police service area. The three localities are also set to share in a further 20 officers at a divisional level, including six new divisional Highway Patrol officers and 14 new members to the divisional Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

The rollout forms part of the largest increase in regional police resources in Victoria Police’s 167-year history, with over 117 police stations across the state set to receive extra resources.

Operation Arid

The Yarra Ranges Police Service is set to benefit from eight new officers and a share in 20 further divisional officers deployed between Maroonah, Knox and the Ranges.

Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said the additional numbers will assist officers to tackle key issues faced in rural areas, such as

family violence, drugs, road trauma and natural disasters.

“It also means more police on the beat than ever before, who will be working around the clock to protect the community, prevent crime and hold offenders to account,” he said.

With training at the academy already underway, the new officers will be gradually rolled out to specialist areas and stations over the course of 12-months, beginning in May. “The influx of officers in regional areas will also assist us in enhancing our ability to provide immediate assistance when state disasters occur, such as bushfires or floods,” Deputy Commissioner Nugent said.

The new officers will be a welcomed addition to significant investments in regional policing over the past two years, with Victoria Police aiming to deploy more than 3,000 officers in total by April 2022.

Lilydale SES attended an incident along the Warburton Trail in Gruyere on Saturday 7 March.

A young man came off his mountain bike requiring Lilydale SES to assist in bringing the patient out from the bushland to the ambulance.

Members from the SES praised the quick thinking of the man’s friends, who were quickly located through the use of a nearby Emergency Marker saving valuable time.

Lilydale SES advised locals to keep a look out for them when using the Warburton Trail.

Seville East crash Seville East has seen another car incident as a two car collision took place along the Warburton Highway on the afternoon of Saturday 14 March.

Paramedics assessed two women at the scene, but neither required hospitalisation.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol said the crash was not listed as an official incident as the drivers involved were uninjured.

Local residents have been pressing hard to see upgrades to the highway which would see designated right hand turn lanes implemented as well as other standard safety features.

In the weeks prior to the incident, the state government had installed reflector sign posts and road tilings.

The hotels of Healesville 'Cheers', 'Bottoms Up', 'Here's to you' and many other similar toasts have echoed thousands of times around the bars of Healesville hotels.

The Grand, Healesville Hotel and The Terminus are all still on their original sites and have dominated Healesville's drinking scene for generations.

The Grand, in its original iteration as the Yorkshire Arms, on the corner of Nicholson Street and Green Street, was built in 1864 on land its builder did not actually purchase until the following year at a cost of £6.

The old single storey weatherboard structure was replaced in 1888 in anticipation of the arrival of the railway, bringing tourist to the town.

The new building, initially known as Edgcumbe's after its owner, was an architect designed three storey building of 37 rooms, including a large dining room.

Healesville and District Historical Society president Since 1894 it has been known as the Grand Hotel, but in 1932 modernisation in the art deco style changed the frontage.

The Healesville Hotel, or The Middle, in a central position in Healesville's main thoroughfare, Nicholson Street, was one of six hotels listed in 1866, serving a population of no more than 100!

It existed in its original timber form until

replaced in 1912 with the building which exists on the same site today, major internal renovations have taken place in recent years.

The third hotel, The Terminus, was built opposite the railway station in 1888 to service the tourist trade and, especially to cater for commercial travellers who displayed their wares to local traders in a second storey room built for that purpose. That area of the hotel remained,

though for other uses until a fire in 1978 destroyed the upper storey, necessitating a part rebuild and renovation of the now single storey building.

Covid-19 crashes events

By Taylah Eastwell and Jed Lanyon Community events across the Yarra Ranges have been cancelled in the wake of the Chief Medical Officer’s advice for the cancellation of mass public gatherings of over 500 people taking place.

Yarra Ranges Council announced that all council events and large gatherings would be postponed for one month from Friday 13 March in line with state and federal government public health advice.

Healesville Rotary’s highly anticipated Dogs Day Out was forced to postpone under 24 hours out from the event due to the increasing risk of Covid-19.

“The committee held an emergency meeting earlier this afternoon (Saturday 14 March) and took immediate action following recent changes to government advice levels,” a statement from Healesville Rotary said.

“While this was a tough decision to make, the safety of all of our guests is our top priority.

The Rotary Club of Healesville will now look to reschedule the event and will be announcing more details as they come to hand.”

Wandin Rotary’s run of bad luck continued as their Custom Car and Bike Show was cancelled for the second consecutive month. The show was set to take place on Wednesday 18 March, while poor weather conditions prevented the previous show from going ahead in February.

Gembrook’s So Long Summer event, set to

Yarra Valley ECOSS pulled the plug early for their annual Ecotopia event, which was scheduled for Sunday 29 March.

“It is with great sadness that we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel Ecotopia 2020,” Yarra Valley ECOSS’s Chelsea McNabb said.

“Hosting Ecotopia with less than 500 people would not be viable for our food vendors, market stallholders and performers, and basically unmanageable for us with such an open site. We also feel it was vital for us to make this decision before vendors purchase food.”

Ms McNabb said that other Yarra Valley ECOSS events would remain “on hold” for the time being.

Relay for Life in Knox was cancelled following a decision by Cancer Council Victoria to cancel all Relay for Life events for March and April.

“Given the high risk to public health currently posed by Covid-19, and keeping in mind that many who attend our events are in a higher risk group, we know the decision to cancel Relay events is in the best interests of our community,” Cancer Council Victoria’s CEO Todd Harper said.

While TarraWarra Museum of Art remains open, it was announced that the Open Weekend event scheduled for 21-22 March, would no longer be taking place.

Tourism body gets nod of support from Yarra Ranges

By Romy Stephens Yarra Ranges Council will extend its partnership with Yarra Ranges Tourism, as the tourism industry continues to feel the impact of COVID-19.

At their 10 March meeting, councillors passed a motion that endorsed an extension of its existing Partnership Agreement with Yarra Ranges Tourism for another 12 months.

It also recommended an increase in the tourism body’s funding amount by 2.5 per cent.

Yarra Ranges Tourism chairman James Robinson said that with the recent bushfires and now the coronavirus, it was an important time to support a body that brings so much to tourism across the region.

“We believe that our reputation has increased over that time and the impact that we have on the region is significant,” he said.

“Obviously there are some choppy waters ahead, it’s probably a good time now to be getting behind and investing in a very important part of the economy.”

Mr Robinson also discussed the impact coronavirus was having on the region but acknowledged that the Yarra Ranges might not be hit as hard as other areas.

“In terms of anecdotal understandings from around the region, we’ve seen obviously

“But I also believe that we’re pretty well protected in terms of our closeness to Melbourne.

“We’re having comments coming back that accommodation is still being booked.

“One of the benefits I think we have is the long-term nature of weddings which causes a lot of the bookings and a lot of the activity on weekends in terms of accommodation,” he said.

Yarra Ranges Council has supported Yarra Ranges Tourism through a Partnership Agreement since 2006.

Cr Fiona McAllister said Yarra Ranges Tourism has been extremely beneficial towards the local tourism industry and was needed now more than ever.“The starting point for me is the very positive impact that Yarra Ranges Tourism has had on our visitor economy,” she said.

“I’ve seen relationships heal, I’ve seen a strategic focus taken, I’ve seen a shift to contemporary approaches to a digital way of thinking about attracting visitors and an all-ofindustry approach to marketing really unfold over the last few years.

“The industry has been doing it extremely hard.

“The stories on the ground cause me concern. First, we had the bushfire impact...The wine industry continues to struggle with Phylloxera and that has a substantial impact on our wine economy and now, of course, coronavirus.

However, some Councillors said the increase in funding by 2.5 per cent was too much.

Cr Cox said the Council should not increase funding more than what rates will increase.

“The increased money that we would be, under this motion, giving to Yarra Ranges Tourism is 2.5 per cent on what it was. I would suggest that it should be 2 per cent,” he said.

“It’s nitpicking but the reason I’m advancing that is because Council rates will go up 2

However, in the end Councillors passed the motion.The decision came as yet another major Yarra Ranges business expressed the impacts it has felt from coronavirus and the recent bushfires.

Rochford Wines marketing manager Maddy Jones said the winery’s visitation numbers were down 30 per cent in February.

“The whole story started with the bushfires.

There wasn’t a lot of clarity in the fact that the Yarra Valley wasn’t affected,” she said.

“China is one of our biggest tourist markets so the impacts of that were felt pretty suddenly and quite quickly.“ Global COVID-19 concerns also forced Rochford Wines to reschedule its Wine Machine event for 31 October.

It was originally scheduled to take place on 28 March.

The Victorian Government conducted a review into regional tourism last year, to find new ways to support tourism in regional Victoria, enhance private investment and create jobs.

The final outcomes of this review are yet to be formalised but expected to be implemented prior to 30 June 2021.

Extra roles for our MPs A shadow cabinet re-shuffle has resulted in new roles for two Yarra Ranges state opposition MPs. Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence has been promoted to shadow Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Youth Affairs, while Gembrook MP Brad Battin will take on the shadow portfolios of Roads (metropolitan), Road Safety and the TAC moving on from his Emergency Services portfolio.

Mr Battin continues to retain the portfolios of Youth Justice, Crime Prevention and Victim Support which he received in 2018.

Ms Vallence said, "I look forward to the opportunity to serve the Victorian public in portfolios that are critical to our community and future prosperity, as well as continuing to work hard for locals in the most magnificent part of Victoria - the Evelyn electorate."

"I am very much looking forward to the new challenge in the role," Mr Battin said.

"I will be focused on delivering policy for better roads, improved road safety and having a TAC that is effective, efficient and not cleaned out by a government who is broke."

Mr Battin said he knew "all too well" the issues his constituents faced daily.

Yarra Glen Preschool is reaping the rewards of going solar thanks to a recent solar panel installation by community-based group Yarra Glenergy.

Vice president Tina Calvi said it was a welcome surprise to see they received a $126 rebate from their first power bill.

“We are excited about it,” she said.

“We’re always interested when we can save some money and put it into the kinder and back into the program.

And when the preschool isn’t in operation, the energy that isn’t being utilised is fed back into the grid.

“We’re looking forward to the ongoing results of this partnership. For us, it’s such a large amount that we’ve saved. We’re a parent run kinder and we rely on a lot of fundraising and

enrolment numbers to keep the kinder viable.

“The preschool is such an important part of our Yarra Glen community.”

Yarra Glenergy is funded with proceeds from council’s sale of Yarra Glen’s former Maternal and Child Health building in 2016.

Yarra Glenergy’s Heather Hill said, “It’s great to see this project bear fruit and to see that it’s going to benefit a group in the community.

“The attraction in choosing the kinder is the link to the child health centre. That centre was paid for by Yarra Glen women in the 40s and 50s. They did lamington drives and catered events at the racecourse.

Digging deep for defib

By Jed Lanyon Chum Creek Primary School has been raising funds to purchase a defibrillator that will be readily available for public use.

Currently, the closest public defibrillator is located a 10-minute drive away in Healesville.

But one student, Lily, says that taking action within the first five minutes for an adult who is experiencing cardiac arrest is critical to their survival.

“The ambulance is going to be an hour or an hour and a half away and they could die,” she said.

The Chum Creek student is spearheading the campaign to see a defibrillator housed in her primary school and has even contributed a portion of her own pocket money to the cause.

When Lily and her brother Tom started collecting money to go towards the school’s defibrillator, their parents said they would match it. Together they have now raised over $200 towards the cause.

But teacher Ann Hosking said that they were hoping to continue the fundraising efforts after hosting gold coin donation days, sausage sizzles and school markets.

“We are still probably a thousand dollars short at the moment and we would love to get it sooner rather than later,” she said.

“The teachers have all been doing their first aid courses on a regular basis and every time the presenter notes that there is no defibrillator out here.”

Ms Hosking said that the school had struggled to receive a grant to fund the defibrillator, which would benefit the wider Chum Creek

Ms Hosking said those in need would be given a four digit passcode upon calling triple zero, which can then be used to open a cabinet securing the defibrillator.

She said that way it can be accessible at any given time outside the front of the school.

Lily has been doorknocking in the neighbourhood to ask locals for their support, offering fresh fruit and vegetables to those who are kind enough to help out.

“We’ve got a heap of elderly people who live in the area. I find it better that they could feel reassured that there is something near them.”

Lily said she even occasionally helps her elderly neighbours when one of them goes away.

Nesting boxes built by men McLeish backs bridge build

By Jed Lanyon Badger Creek Men’s Shed members are working hard to build nesting boxes to help support birds affected by the devastating summer bushfires.

The men’s shed has hand crafted over 50 boxes, which will allow surviving native wildlife to nest inside after much of their habitat would have been destroyed.

One men’s shed member ‘Taffy’ said, “When the bushfires came, we heard a call for some bird boxes, so I suggested it to the lads and we took it on.”

The nesting boxes have been created with different sized holes allowing a variety of bird species to utilise them.

Taffy said that he had received good feedback regarding the quality of the nesting boxes that had come from men’s sheds.

The boxes have been fitted with specially designed lids to ensure that possums and other predators cannot get inside, while the inside of each box has been modified to make it easier for chicks to climb out.

The men’s shed used wood supplied from Bunnings that would have gone to waste as well as materials from JC Custom Screens.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish has spoken in State Parliament about the urgent need to replace the pedestrian bridge demolished by VicRoads at McMahons Creek.

The pedestrian bridge, near the Reefton Hotel was demolished in 2017. Since then, Woods Points Road has become the community crossing point and pedestrians have to walk along the dangerous blind corner in an 80-kilometre-an-hour zone.

Ms McLeish called on the Minister to install a new pedestrian bridge at McMahons Creek just south of the iconic Reefton Hotel.

“The minister needs to recognise, understand and respect the needs of small communities. Connectedness is so important. It should be easy for children and adults to move around safely. The pedestrian bridge allowed this to happen,” Ms McLeish explains.

Reefton McMahon Creek Action Group (RMAG) has rallied to continue the push for the bridge to be replaced. Ms McLeish was impressed by RMAG’s work to date.

“They are so organised and very focused on a number of community projects, and this is one of their key priorities,” she said.

RMAG have also written to the Department of Transport and relevant Ministers pleading

for the bridge to be replaced. The Yarra Ranges Shire continues to support the cause and the project request has gained strong media coverage.

Ms McLeish urged the community, action groups and Yarra Ranges Shire to continue their efforts to raise awareness for the urgency of building the new pedestrian bridge.

“It is something that should be done and needs to be done, and it needs to be done with some urgency.”

RMAG Chairman, Russell Brown, said “VicRoads admitted they made a mistake tearing the bridge down. It’s just a budgetary issue now to rectify their mistake.

“One wonders why they made the mistake in the first place. Now they have created a worse safety issue for the community, especially children, and an unbelievable amount of traffic.”

At the business end Finals cricket has at last started in the Yarra Valley and excellent conditions greeted cricketers set for an exciting weekend of play.

Teams have toiled all season and are now in the cutthroat, do or die stage of the season.

Teams who finished first in the top grades will be keeping their eyes on how their rivals fair as they wait to see who they will be competing against in next week’s finals.

In the premier grade of the Yarra Valley, the DJ Strachan Shield it was up to Wandin to bat first in their game against Healesville, as the bulldogs won the toss and duly chose to bat.

Daniel Rodgers removed Rhett smith in the third over to give Healesville the perfect start to the day.

The Bloods were forced to wait 20 overs for the second wicket as josh Bromiley and Matthew Heriot struck four-an-over in an 80 run partnership.

When heriot was run out Tim Thorne strode to the crease and went about building another strong partnership for Wandin. He put on a century stand, with Bromiley and Healesville’s bowlers struggling to make inroads into the batting line-up.

Micheal Jackson would be The Bloods man to make the breakthrough as he removed Thorne just as he set himself into his innings.

However, Healesville would have to watch on as Bryce Edwards followed the trend and put on another partnership with Bromiley, who brought up an impressive century to guide the bloods past 200.

Ash Hamer and Dale Senior struck with the ball to remove the Wandin batsmen and help control the scoring, as the bulldogs entered the last 10 overs with 2 new players at the crease.

Ben Galante struck quick runs late to push the bulldogs towards 300. When Senior and Hamer stuck again late in the day the score was held to a still impressive 297.

The score is achievable for Healesville however one would think that the advantage is in Wandin’s favour after they were able to negate the Bloods strike bowler Jordan Poynton. They took him for nearly five an over and keeping him wicket less may well prove the difference in this game.

Entering day two Healesville’s challenging target looked utterly daunting when Stuart Thompson ripped the heart of the Bloods top order taking 3 early wickets. When Ethan Alderman took a fourth it spelled big trouble for the Blood’s.

Ben Wallace stood at the other end throughout the carnage, and when he was joined by Ash Hamer the pair went about resurrecting the Bloods slim hopes with a 60 run stand.

When Thompson dismissed both batsmen in quick succession he completed a five wicket haul that reflected Wandin’s dominance in this match. Although Max Minney and the tail end batters hung around and showed some fight, eventually Healesville were all out for 178.

Had the Healesville top order shown what they can do they may very well have chased the total down, as there were still more than 20 overs in the tank. However, when four of your top five fall for six or less it is very difficult to win a game.

As a result, it is Wandin who have earned the right to challenge Yarra Junction for the Strachan Shield in next week’s final on the back of Bromileys century and Thompson’s five wicket haul.

In raft blue Coldstream and Healesville played out an evenly matched day of cricket as Coldstream accumulated their way to 7/181.

Again for Coldstream it was their young talent that led the way with the bat as youngsters Michael and Daniel Pezzimenti, Aaron Steel and Daniel Vaux made the bulk of the runs.

Andy Jacubowics and Tyler Tweedie collected three wickets each to prevent any large partnerships, while Scott Fawdry was unplayable as usual.

A larger score could have been for the crocs as six batsmen made a solid start without contributing a half century. For Healesville, it will still be a tricky chase as the typically slow Coldstream ground will make scoring difficult.

Enter day two and it was clear it would not be Healesville’s day as their batsmen struggled to make an impact.

Carl Dikschie was in riveting form as he collected a rapid five wicket haul, while Andy Jakubowicz led his team with the bat. However, Healesvilles chances vanished before their eyes as they were rolled for 118.

In one day cricket, raft gold saw Woori Yallock overcome Launching Place in a low scoring thriller at Woori Yallock.

Batting first, Launch scored early on after the wicket of Michael Baker. Star duo Clint Sharman and Jordan Birnie got the score moving quickly.

Unfortunately for Launching Place the Tigers showed some fight as 1/56 quickly became 4/67, with Adam Dunn and Jason Young taking two wickets a piece.

Birnie and Stuart Parker were still at the crease and Launch still definitely capable of a large score. However, when the slow bowling of Paul Broussard captured four wickets it was left to Parker to try to drag his side to their allotted 40 overs.

Accurate bowling foiled launches plans as Adam Dunn took the final two wickets to leave the score at 126 with 10 overs still in the bank.

The tigers chase began with Ryan Christie looking ominous as he collected two quick wickets however Mick Dwyer rallied with Danny Hyndman as they took the score to 70 and gave the tigers a firm grip on the game.

Clint Sharman wasn’t willing to give up as he sparked belief into Launching Place with three quick wickets including the two set batsmen. As the score moved to 7/94 the Tigers fragile tail was exposed and the balance swung in favour of Launching Place.

The one thing between Launching Place and next week’s final was young Corey Winterannette, unperturbed by the launching place advance the teenager stuck several late boundary’s to seal the game for Woori Yallock.

In one day grade semi finals Powelltown accounted for Yarra Glen thanks to a brilliant team effort with the bat.

Making 8/181 Powelltowns highest score was Garry Mcrorie with 32. With few batsmen failing to make an impact Powelltown made a good score on an extremely slow ground. John Woods was the best of the bowlers with 3/22.

Yarra Glens chase never really took off as the difficult scoring conditions hurt the Yarra Glen batsmen.

Nick Hurtrup was the best with the bat making 27 as Steven Sanders and Garry Mcrorie combined for seven wickets and bowl out the Riverpigs for 111.

Hoddles Creek dominated Yarra Junction in the other one day grade semi as they amassed 5/217 with the bat.

Simon Robertson and Paul Healey stuck half centuries while the Eagles had five wicket takers as no bowlers managed to hold off the Hoddles Creek onslaught.

Yarra Junction were never really in the chase as father and son Simon and Aiden Robertson took the heart out of the Yarra Junction chase.

Craig Smith was the only one to score past 20.

Eventually the Eagles would limp to 9/118 from their 40 overs.

Joy for Haynes, Brown from field of 18

By Ron Hottes The Warburton Golf Club enjoyed its 4BBB Stableford on Wednesday 11 March, with 18 pairs participating in the fun event.

The pair that worked the best as a team were John Haynes and Craig Brown who accumulated 43 points between them.

Haynes and Brown won by one point as Stan Slusarek and Kevin Conway come runners up with 42. Balls only went down to 41.

Nearest the pins went to ‘Happy’ Gilmore (3rd), Peter Bell (9th), Ross Machar (12th), OldMan River Hubbard (15th) and Heather Judkins for a great second shot on the 17th.

With three normal rounds to go to reach the famous shootout, every point counts now in the clubs twilight round.

There are 15 who are placed close to the Top 10, so stop scores are at a premium.

A premium result came the way of Sam Dennis with 21 points. Sam had a great round as he also snared the nearest the pins on both the 10th and 15th. The other nearest the pin went to Spencely Junior on the 12th and his dad grabbed the runner up prize with 19 points.

The only other point of interest is that you can claim a ball if you have 17 points.

Balls could be claimed if you had 17 points.

The club played their Stableford and the first round of the Maurie-Wakeling Memorial Trophy on Saturday 14 March.

Many of the club’s members remember Maurie, a long-service and popular clubman.

This event is held in recognition of his service

to the club.

The winner on the day and one of the leaders after the first round was David Lever with 41 excellent points.

Pup won the A-Grade voucher.

B-Grade was won by David Clinch also with 41.

This means Bozo is the other equal leader.

The runner-up on the day was Ben Lever, David’s brother, and Panda also amassed 41 points.

Balls got down to 36.

Nearest the pin winners were Old Man-River Hubbard (3rd), President Hall (9th), Dave Murch (12th) & Lance Gator Atwell (15th).

The club will play the second round on Saturday 21 March.

Bloodshot is a tense, very well-written film with intriguing themes, but the messy action lacks clarity and Diesel lacks charisma.

Warburton 1 Weekend Division 1 Section 4 Premiers side following their victory against Croydon 1 at the weekend.

By Garry Lewis A thrilling victory for the Warburton 1 weekend team in the Division 1 Section 4 Grand Final highlighted an exciting week for the Burras.

The Warburton 1 Weekend team played Mulgrave 1 at home on Saturday in the Division 1 Section 4 Semi Final and recorded a strong victory 107 to 55 to earn a place in the grand final the next day against top side Croydon 1.

Rink scores were as follows: P. Woods 14/ 21; B. Woods 28/ 13; J. Brookes 38/ 10 and J. Van Der Zweep 27/ 11.

The Warburton 1 Grand Final was played on Sunday at Burden Park Bowls Club in superb conditions.

The Burras went in as underdogs against the top side, Croydon 1, after big losses against them in both home and away games during the season.

Warburton got off the mark quickly and created a handy lead across all rinks, being up 33 to 9 after 20 ends. But Croydon’s experienced players lifted as they edged back to be down 49 to 33 after 39 ends at the break.

This pattern continued as neither side gave up and Croydon reduced the deficit to three shots with only nine ends to go.

The crowd was on its edge as with two ends to play Warburton was two shots up.

All rinks had finished, except Jeremy Brooke’s rink. They lost the second last end to leave Warburton one shot up overall. In a tense last end, Jeremy’s rink held their nerve to 84 to 82. They are now the Division 1 Section 4 Premiers for 2019/ 2020.

Rink scores were as follows: B. Woods 28/ 18; P. Woods 16/ 16; J. Brookes 19/ 22 and J. Van Der Zweep 21/ 26.

Warburton 1 now play M.C.C. 1 at Mooroolbark on Saturday 21 March in the Division 1 Semi Final.

The Warburton 1 Midweek side travelled to traditional rivals, Healesville 1, and the match lived up to expectations.

The locals gained an early lead only to be reeled in late by the Burras for an exciting draw, 55 all.

Rink scores were as follows: J. Van Der Zweep 22/ 22; S. Lee Tet 27/ 7 and R. McKail 6/ 26.

Warburton 1 will play Vermont South 2 this Tuesday at home in the semi- final. If they win they will play in the Grand Final this Thursday.

Greyhound clubs give back Greyhound Racing Victoria is proud of its 13 greyhound clubs, with 10 clubs being represented in Regional Victoria.

The Victoria clubs contribute $543.4 million overall to the economy each year and employ 4,302 FTE jobs.

The industry also boasts over 1,400 volunteers that support and encourage greyhound racing to thrive.

The clubs have just successfully committed over $140,000 to the recent East Gippsland bushfires. The Victorian greyhound clubs wanted to do more, and visit the area and support the economy in an area where it is much needed.

Last week they had 24 representatives visit the area and put back into the economy. They have enjoyed a boat trip on the Lady Jodie, enjoyed accommodation at the Moorings, breakfast at Bancroft Bites, and a conference at the Metung Hotel.

Ladies’ day Healesville Greyhound Association celebrated International Women's Day with a Women on Track event Sunday 8 March.

This day was made even more special as it was a memorial Michelle Niele who had three constants her whole life - family, greyhounds and Cystic Fibrosis. Michelle's favourite times were sitting in the kennels and watching her dad feed the dogs and going to the track.

Approximately 150 guests enjoyed the sunny weather and high tea at the beautiful Healesville Greyhound Track. Grace Knight one of the most enduring talents in Australian music, entertained guests and was delighted to be part of this special day. The race card was highlighted by the Michelle Niele Memorial, won by the Lisa Davis-trained Bring Your Banjo.

In keeping with the theme of the day all races were called by Victoria Shaw who is mostly recognised as being involved in thoroughbred racing but has a special interest in greyhounds.

All female handlers received a gift bag in appreciation, while $1000 was raised for Cystic Fibrosis, which claimed Michelle's life in 2019.

RAFFLE WINNERS 1st Prize: Weekend for two for four days three nights including airfares, accommodation and dinner.

Won by: Patricia Cullen.

2nd Prize: Dinner for two at Rochford Winery in Healesville.

Won by: Barry Toner.

3rd Prize: Local produce basket.

Greyhound Clubs Victoria Chairman Adrian Scott said: “We jumped at the opportunity to accept the challenge of taking our business to support East Gippsland, what a great part of Victoria it is.

“We have managers and club presidents from all our 13 greyhound clubs from as far away as Horsham and Warrnambool and we have had a fantastic two days. The hospitality has been exceptional and I urge other business to take up the challenge.”

Healesville club manager Cynthia O’brien said East Gippsland turned on the weather for the two-day conference in Metung.

“It was the perfect way to show the our fellow greyhound club managers and presidents from all areas of Victoria what a wonderful part of the state we live in. I was very proud to be able to showcase our area and the resilience of our tourism operators.”
