By Danielle Kutchel The annual Dandenong World Fare is returning in 2020 for another day of fun, food and culture.

The World Fare is the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival's largest free, family-friendly event.

There's no need to jet around the world for your flavour fix, with visitors experiencing the tastes of cultures from continents near and far.

More than 50 street food traders will be in attendance, offering hawker-style favourites and some unique dishes created exclusively for the World Fare.

Courting closure

By Danielle Kutchel Court Network will no longer supply muchneeded support to Family Court attendees from June 2020, having been forced to withdraw their services from Dandenong Family Court after funding dried up.

Court Network has been providing a free, volunteer-led support service at Dandenong and Melbourne Family Courts since 1990.

Three days a week, six volunteers help Dandenong court users navigate the intimidating Family Court process, working collaboratively

with security, men's and women's family violence services and legal services to provide support, identify risk and provide referrals to other services.

"We are part of humanity and kindness to court users," explained executive director of Court Network, Maya Avdibegovic.

"While others are busy and provide focus on legal outcomes, for us it's about making sure there is someone to support people at times of great stress."

Services at Melbourne Family Court will also be impacted by the funding loss.

Court Network's Family Court services had historically been funded by the Federal Government, until a change in 2015 saw the money transferred to the states with no clear direction about allocation for Court Network.

Victorian Legal Aid (VLA) took over administration of the funds and supplied Court Network with the money they needed to continue their work.

But with VLA now experiencing their own funding troubles, the money for Court Network has dried up.

"The position we're in now is no one wants to take responsibility for us."

A spokesperson for the Victorian Government said: "Court Network provides support services in Commonwealth law courts and this is the responsibility of the Federal Government.

"This is yet another Federal Government cut which means vulnerable women and children won't get the support they need."

A breakfast to inspire

By Danielle Kutchel The South East Business Networks celebrated International Women's Day early with a breakfast attended by members of the Greater Dandenong business community.

Importantly, it wasn't just women in the room on the morning of Thursday 5 March: men were also there to listen to the inspiring stories of some of the boldest women in Dandenong and Victoria.

Following the International Women's Day 2020 theme 'Each for Equal', speakers focused on their contributions to make the world a better place.

The keynote speaker was Annabelle Chauncy OAM, founding director of the School for Life Foundation.

Ms Chauncy spoke of her burning desire to help others, which led to a stint volunteering in Africa teaching English to children in Kenya,

and her transformation from a law student stuck in a rut to a passionate charity director.

On her way home, she scratched out a business plan on a piece of paper, focusing on her desire empower local people to help themselves and her belief in the power of education.

School for Life was born in 2008 and has

now grown to comprise two primary schools and a large secondary school.

Ms Chauncy encouraged her audience to give back to those less fortunate, to not failure get them down, and to find their passion.

"When you're driven by purpose, you'll attract purpose-driven people," she said.

Ms Chauncy was followed by Margo Hartley, co-founder of Hilton Manufacturing.

Another philanthropic soul, Ms Hartley received an OAM in 2014 for service to the Dandenong community and to youth through the Scouting movement.

This year, she received the Dandenong Living Treasure Australia Day Award in recognition of her ongoing contribution to the region.

She outlined her philosophy: "you can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone."

Dandenong joint Young Leader of the Year Tanishka Sharma concluded the morning with a sharp speech about her experience as a law student from a migrant background.

Despite naysayers, she was determined to not let her gender get in the way of her dreams, and has now gained experience working in a broad range of areas in her local community, including youth and family violence.

Bridging the city to help women reach their potential

By Danielle Kutchel Australians have come together from opposite sides of Melbourne to embody the message of International Women's Day, Each for Equal.

A member of Diamond Valley Rotary Club joined forces with south-eastern group AfriAus Care to put on a pre-loved clothing sale in celebration of International Women's Week.

The theme of IWD 2020, 'Each for Equal', asks individuals to consider what they can actively do to create a gender equal world.

Together, the groups did exactly that, aiming to raise funds to help African women reach their full potential.

Pam Wood of Diamond Valley Rotary Club met Selba Luka, founder of Afri-Aus Care

through the Rotary Passport Club of Melbourne, of which they are both members.

Ms Wood, who acts as a mentor to Ms Luka, said the idea for the event was born of another successful sale that she had run last year.

With plenty of high-quality clothing left over from 2019, and clothes donated from friends, Ms Wood suggested donating them towards a similar sale by Afri-Aus Care - and so the seed was planted.

Members of the local African-Australian community banded together to organise the day, with some drawing up posters and others sorting through the items for sale.

The sale ran from 10am to 6pm on Friday 6 March at the ADRA Community Centre in Springvale, and funds raised will go towards

the African-Australian Women's Health and Wellbeing Group Springvale, which is run by Afri-Aus Care.

The money will help provide essentials such as Myki cards, food and supplies for the women as they learn skills for their future in Australia.

A small portion of the sales will also go towards the Amasiko Partnership's Days for Girls contribution.

Days for Girls is prepares and distributes sustainable menstrual health solutions to girls who would otherwise miss school during their periods, while the Amasiko Partnership works in Kasenda, Uganda, to provides resources to help a rural village in Uganda to become selfsufficient.

Funds raised will help African women reach their full potential.

IN BRIEF Man charged after crash on Monash

Safety call on fence

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan has called for more safety fencing along a deadly creek that flows through Dandenong Park's booming recreation areas.

A 25-metre section of tall metal fencing was recently been installed by the council, extending south from the fully-fenced Red Gum Rest playground off Princes Highway.

But Cr Kirwan said that extension should be lengthened by at least another 25 metres.

At the same playground area, three-yearold Ishnael Baqaie was swept away and drowned by fast-flowing stormwaters in Dandenong Creek in 2014.

At most times, the concrete-lined waterway is a benign trickle.

But after heavy rains, it becomes a more treacherous waterway raging between the park's gently sloped grass banks.

Since the tragedy, Greater Dandenong Council has fenced off unguarded banks near the playground - including the recent 25-metre section. It also removed a gate at the southwest side of the playground to minimise "proximity risks" posed by the creek.

"It was obvious the fence should go further.

"The work we've done to improve Dandenong Park over the last few years has seen huge numbers of families and children all over the park.

"I'm not an advocate of fencing off the

City-bound lanes of the Monash Freeway were closed between Belgrave-Hallam Road and the South Gippsland Freeway following a serious collision on Sunday 8 March.

The collision occurred early on Sunday morning with VicTraffic providing notification of the crash at 8.50am.

The freeway then reopened at 2.30pm.

Following the crash, Narre Warren Police charged a 21-year-old man with multiple offences including negligently causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury, conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, driving at a speed dangerous, driving at a manner dangerous, refusing a preliminary oral fluid test, refusing evidentiary breath test, and refusing a blood sample.

The Pakenham man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 10 March.

His male passenger, a 20-year-old Pakenham man, remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Coronial findings, including safety recommendations, relating to Ishnael's death have not been publicly released.

Greater Dandenong corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the State Coroner made no "specific recommendations" to the council.

"The fencing referred to by Cr Kirwan has already been extended by a further 25 metres to mitigate the risk of balls being used by children rolling into the creek reservation," Mr Jaensch said.

"In addition, a soil mound was constructed south or the play area to help minimise the risk of balls rolling towards the creek."

After the drowning, the council reviewed its playgrounds for "proximity risks" including nearby waterways, roads and cycle paths, he said.

Naked aggression at Super Fresh A would-be thief has exposed himself in an armed robbery gone awry.

Two offenders attended Super Fresh Meat and Bakery in Dandenong at 1.45pm on Friday 28 February. The pair, including a 24-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, both from Dandenong, attempted to make off with a barbecue.

The victims chased the offenders with the three ending up wrestling over the bungled burglary.

The female offender produced a knife during the scuffle, while the man exposed himself, revealing he was not wearing underwear.

The victim then returned to the store.

The female offender followed and demanded food, and the victim responded by giving her a couple of pieces of bread.

Police arrived and arrested the pair.

They are set to appear in court at a later date.

Cops on court in Victorian games

By Danielle Kutchel Dandenong-based Leading Senior Constable Bec Mitchell will wear a uniform of a different kind when she steps onto the court in the Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games this month.

This year's games will see over 3000 competitors from 24 police and emergency services agencies compete in over 44 sports.

The competitions focus on wellness and promote camaraderie between emergency services personnel.

LSC Mitchell has been participating in the netball competition at the games for the last six or seven years and said it could get "very competitive" as paramedics, Corrections Victoria, various police divisions and firefighters went head to head on the court.

She is part of a netball team of female officers drawn from across the southern metro policing region.

Traditionally, their team makes the finals against the Victoria Police northern metro division team in a definite case of white line fever, with southern metro taking home the gold a couple of times.

She said the competition gives her and her teammates a chance to see each other outside of the office.

"It's nice to catch up with colleagues and see what's going on in their world," she said.

She added that participating in the games can also help with stress relief and gives members "something else to think about" other than work.

"Operational duties can be very full on for members," she added.

"You don't want to just associate the people you work with with negativity all the time we're good support for each other."

The fire occurred on Taylors Road in Dandenong South at 10.20pm on Saturday 29 February.

Information sought on robbery A Springvale resident has sustained grazes to his legs, wrists and knees after being thrown to the ground in a violent robbery.

On Saturday 29 February at 2am, the 30-year-old was walking home from work down Whitworth Avenue in Springvale when he was approached by three males of Asian appearance.

The offenders demanded the man hand over his phone before throwing him to the ground.

They then demanded the pin code to access his phone, which the victim gave, before they ran towards Springvale Road.

The offenders were all wearing dark clothes at the time.

"It's a tiny amount of money," Ms Avdibegovic added.

"In this time when we have all these tragic family violence incidents like the murder of women and children, and politicians talking about making a real different, not being able to support us with $130,000 is ridiculous."

According to Our Watch, on average, one woman a week is murdered by her current

or former partner.

For the year ending September 2019, the City of Greater Dandenong recorded a slight increase in family violence incidents, rising to 2441 incidents from 2392 the previous year.

In a statement, Law Institute Victoria president Sam Pandya called on the State and Federal Governments to urgently agree on a new national partnership agreement which provides essential legal aid funding.

"The current artificial distinction between what is a Federal Government legal issue and

what is a State Government issue is leaving vulnerable people caught in the middle," Mr Pandya said.

"Family violence issues are generally state funded, while family court is generally federally funded.

"But victims do not see their legal issues in terms of state boundaries, and nor should governments."

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 11 March 1920 A Satisfactory Trial An instructive pioneer trip between Sydney and Melbourne by a British made 'Leyland' five ton motor lorry was successfully carried out through last week. The primary reason for the journey was that the truck had to be delivered to the agents in Melbourne. The railway freight was in the region of £25 and delivery could not be promised under three weeks. Steamer freight was out of the question owing to the strike hold up. It was therefore decided to make the journey by road and to help defray the expenses of the trip by taking a five ton load of merchandise across from Sydney to Melbourne. The journey despite the shocking state of the road in places, was negotiated in 64 hours driving time. The

cost of delivery the load was £5/10/- a ton, as against the railway charges of £7/12/9. The consumption of petrol for the trip was 96 gallons. The truck is a post war model and is shod with solid rubber Dunlop tyres.

AFL Chief Executive Mr Wayne Jackson said last week he believed the councils plans could backfire and threaten AFL clubs, because he feared a heritage listing could slash the grounds value.

CFA ready for rescues Firefighters at all 38 of CFA's integrated and career stations across Victoria are now fully equipped with added road rescue capability.

Springvale became one of the final three CFA stations across the state to be equipped with this capability after its members successfully completed the Road Crash Rescue Support (RCRS) training.

CFA operations manager Craig Brownlie said the industry-leading road rescue training provided to career firefighters across the state was an acknowledgement that CFA more than a firefighting authority.

"Our crews often respond to a variety of incidents, as well as EMR and motor vehicle collisions," Mr Brownlie said.

"The training has given our career firefighters the important skills required to provide access to trapped motorists as quickly and as

safely as possible.

"We hope not to be called to any motor vehicle collisions, but if we are, we are better equipped than ever to help our communities."

Firefighters are now able to provide stabilisation, glass management and initial access for Ambulance Victoria prior to the arrival of a primary rescue provider.

"This training means more efficient access to patients for paramedics, ultimately more lives saved," Mr Brownlie added.

Last year, CFA responded to more than 5,500 call-outs to road collisions and extricated more than 350 people out of motor vehicles.

More than 40 people have died on Victorian roads already this year.

Waste-to-energy anger

By Danielle Kutchel A community conference on the proposed waste-to-energy plant in Dandenong South has been slammed as "insincere and meaningless" by City of Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan.

Cr Kirwan and colleague Maria Sampey were among around 100 concerned residents who packed a council meeting room for the conference on Tuesday 3 March.

Those attending discussed some of the key issues to come out of the submissions that were made by the public in response to Great Southern Waste Technologies' proposal for a $15 million plant at 70 Ordish Road, Dandenong South.

A total of 79 submissions were made in response to the proposal via the Engage Victoria website earlier this year; 76 raised concerns or directly objected to the proposal.

Cr Sampey told the Journal she was confused about the purpose of the conference.

"Why are they asking us to ask the questions?" she said.

"It isn't the people attending who are doing the investigation.

"What is the EPA going to achieve through this consultation?"

She said she had attended the event expecting to hear more information from the EPA regarding the similar use of the waste-to-energy technology in Europe.

"I wanted information, and they're not giving us information," she said.

Cr Kirwan said he too was disappointed with the way the evening had progressed, and suggested a better way of conducting the evening would have been to simply take questions from the floor.

There was no shortage of questions when the audience was given the microphone for a brief period prior to the meeting's end, with

Cr Kirwan and Cr Sampey were unimpressed with how the event played out.

Residents packed the room for the event. attendees querying the age of the technology being introduced, the potential environmental impacts and emissions of the plant, the impacts on air quality and the chosen location.

"From the heart of a community member ... to the applicants, take the community concerns into your consideration and prioritise, and take a look at some of the failed cases around the world, not only the good case studies," one resident begged.

While not every question was given an answer or response on the night, the queries were recorded by the EPA. Representatives of the EPA insisted on the night that there was "no rush" to get the project through, and that they would ensure prop-

er processes were followed and requirements met should the plant be approved.

Nadir Yildiz, head of college at Mt Hira College, said he was concerned about the effects of the plant on air quality and pollution, and about the possibility of the plant's software being hacked or manipulated.

"I'm sick of fighting these people," he said.

"Every time bad industry comes to Dandenong, we have to fight, and it's costing the community."

The proposed plant would be located approximately 1.5 kilometres away from the College and its 610 students.

Keysborough resident Helen said the loca-

tion should be "crossed out".

She and several other residents are mobilising as a group to continue fighting the proposal.

A spokesperson for the EPA said they appreciated the community's concern.

"The conference showed the high level of interest from the local community about the proposed waste to energy facility in Dandenong South," said EPA manager southern metro region Marleen Mathias.

"From here, an independent report will be produced and made available on the engage. vic.gov.au website.

"EPA will use all this information in its assessment of the Works Approval application to make a final decision."

According to its submission to the Environment Protection Authority Victoria, GSWT seeks to use gasification technology to process 100,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste and commercial and industrial waste each year.

It would generate 7.9 megawatts of electricity to be fed into the grid, enough to power about 7000 homes according to Great Southern, using technology from Norwegian company Energos.

Open day with enviro care

By Danielle Kutchel The Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre threw open its doors last month to visitors from across the region.

The centre held its annual Open Day on Wednesday 26 February, attracting a crowd of about 50 people throughout the day.

The Open Day allows members of the community and stakeholders to come in, meet the team and learn more about what services the organisation can provide.

The first half of the day is usually dedicated to a topical issue, with this year's focus being on

the power of education on the environment.

The topics also align with pathways that the centre can provide.

The session aimed to educate attendees about sustainability being everyone's responsibility.

This was followed by an opportunity to meet staff members and attend forums and workshops to see the centre in action.

"What we've identified for our clients is that this is an issue that is quite new to them," explained chief executive officer Ramesh Kumar.

"Ultimately what we're trying to do is raise

awareness that the need is now, and if we don't change our behaviour, the climate and our environment will be forever changed, and that through simple choices we can make a big impact but we have to do it now," he said.

This included information on waste and recycling, managing bills, heating, cooling and cooking.

The CFA also attended to provide information about the essential services they provide, as well as representatives from the City of Greater Dandenong and Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan.

The Open Day was a chance for visitors to meet the team and learn about the importance of looking after the environment.

Growing interest as community garden opens for all

There will also be a raffle and a sausage sizzle, both of which will raise funds for the important work done at this community organisation.

Garden president Gloria Gapper says the organisation's membership is multicultural, which will come in useful on the day.

"We have many members from different nationalities, who will be able to guide those who don't speak English first," she said.

Local nurseries are donating plants which will be sold at the open day, while a representative from Yates Products will be providing free giveaways.

Even if gardening isn't a point of interest, Ms Gapper still recommends coming down and having a look.

"It's a beautiful place to look at. You might even to decide to grow some vegetables."

The world on a plate Melbourne Food and Wine Festival's largest free, family-friendly event has returned.

Dandenong Market will celebrate world street food and culture on Sunday 22 March from 10am to 4pm at their ninth annual Dandenong World Fare.

Lee Tarlamis.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

The students were presented a badge during a school assembly ceremony held on Friday 14 February.

As part of the school leadership team, their responsibilities include helping with school activities, writing newsletter features about events happening in the school, and some students will be taking surveys on student well-being and presenting during important assemblies such as Anzac and Remembrance Day. They will also be attending a leadership conference in March to sharpen and refine their leadership skills.

School captain Benjamin says he would “really like to help the new students and preps fit in.”

“Also for everyone to have someone to play with and help preps have a better learning experience by teaching them what they do here at Hallam Primary School,” he says.

From early March, there will be weekly opportunities for women aged 16 and above to try a new sport.

Touch Football will take place at Ross Reserve, Noble Park, every Monday (except 9 March) from 4pm - 5pm.

Social Soccer will be held at JC Mills Reserve, Dandenong, every Tuesday from 4pm - 5pm.

The program is being delivered in collaboration with Reclink Australia, which provides socially inclusive opportunities to communities through sports and art programs.

Reclink Sports Co-ordinator Samantha Marshall says that fear of judgement is a significant barrier to women becoming less active after the age of 15.

“Sometimes women feel they are not fit enough to take part in an activity, or worry that people are watching.”

Vic Health initiative which celebrates and supports Victorian women to embrace physical activity in a way that is best for them.

Though there are many significant barriers to female participation in sports, Ms Marshall says that these barriers can be overcome.

“This Girl Can is just about getting more active. It doesn’t have to be competitive or intense, you just need to get out there.”

Buckley’s great escape

By Nick Creely It was agony for Narre South and ecstasy for Buckley Ridges.

With no second chances in the DDCA Turf 1 semi-final, it all came down to 4pm on Sunday, and one moment that sealed the reigning champs' great escape.

And a great escape it truly was.

With Adrian Neill at the batting crease needing four runs to win the game for the Bucks with just one wicket left - and the Lions' champion skipper Scott Phillips, with his tail up and steaming in to the wicket with ball in hand, the Scottish quick tickled one through the slips for four to win the game.

The reigning champs lived to fight another day, and as skipper David White said recently, the Bucks are going to thrive off the challenge of defending its premiership by "doing it the long way."

But the brave Lions very nearly pulled off a stunning result, and despite falling short in agonising fashion after at one stage going from a potential heavy loss to an almost certain victory, they will undoubtedly bounce back into a stronger group once the agony wears off for the team and its many supporters and members.

On a Strathaird Recreation Reserve deck that offered plenty for bowlers willing to put it in the right areas and for batsmen willing to dig in and play a big innings, the clash was poised to be a classic when White sent the Lions in to face the music.

But it couldn't have gone any worse for the Lions.

With Jerome Jones up and about with his usually lively pace, the Bucks snared opener Jawed Hussaini, before medium pacers Greg Todd (2/30) and Susantha Pradeep (1/9) found a way through a usually strong top-order - including the key scalps of Wookey winner Morteza Ali and Jersey international Jonty Jenner leaving the home side in a bit of trouble at 4/40.

But Scott Phillips had other ideas, knuckling down for the home side to look an assured presence, building a strong 53-run stand with a patient Joe Thomas (18), with the pair rebuilding the early collapse to get the home side on track for a competitive total at the tea interval.

However, just after the break, Adrian Neill - almost ironically - snared the monster breakthrough of Phillips, caught behind into the safe hands of Troy Aust for a well-made 40, sparking another collapse that saw the Lions fall for just 131 in the 62nd over, with tweaker Wes Nicholas' 3/19 absolutely vital in removing a lower-order with the capabilities to do some serious pinch hitting.

The Bucks employed Greg Todd to open up the chase with one of many of the club's unsung heroes, Jayson Hobbs, with regular opener Daniel 'DJ' Watson struggling with a hamstring complaint, and the pair managed to get the visitors into a strong - and almost indomitable 0/35 at stumps.

The task of gathering 10 wickets seemed all the more insurmountable when the pair on day two were watchful in adding 35 runs to the overnight score, without a wicket loss and with plenty of firepower still in the sheds.

It was from an unlikely source in Jonty Jenner (1/24) that saw the Lions finally managing to get through the gates of Greg Todd for an incredibly vital 29, but with just 62 runs to get and an army of capable batsmen to come, the odds were still against them.

But enter reigning Wookey winner Morteza Ali (4/38), who sent down an utterly game changing spell of bowling.

Matthew Chasemore's Berwick side is through to its first grand final since 2011/12. 205865 Accurate and precise, Ali snared the DDCA's most dangerous man, White, not long after, before the triple strike of Susantha Pradeep, Jerome Jones and the well-set Jayson Hobbs (59) saw the Bucks suddenly tumble to 5/108.

With each run becoming all the more precious, it was then Phillips' (4/37) time to put a serious scare through the Buckley camp Bowling another memorable spell, and his last as a Lion after hanging up the whites after the game, Phillips - one of the great finals performers anywhere in Victoria - trapped keeper Troy Aust in front, and removed champion all-rounder Daniel Watson second ball before rattling the stumps of Suren Ekanayake (12) as the Lions surged home with almost unwavering momentum. Some nervous moments ensued with the Bucks still needing 11 for victory with two wickets in hand, before Phillips - desperately needing something after Matt Goodwright managed to hit an extremely valuable boundary - trapped the late-order batsman in front to put the remarkable game within his side's grasp.

But despite a brave and memorable fightback, Neill produced six of his most unforgettable runs, including a skimming ball through slips for four to win the game, and ensured the Bucks would earn the right for one more week to still be the reigning champions of Turf 1 cricket, but are still far from their best cricket.

Tension was just as palpable down at Arch Brown Reserve as Berwick and Springvale South fought tooth and nail to earn a place in the Turf 1 grand final.

But the Bears, led brilliantly by another great in Matt Chasemore, sealed their spot in the big dance and their first grand final since 2011/12 as momentum builds strongly at the Cave.

It was a delayed start of almost three hours on day one due to heavy rain falling in the south-east in the latter part of the week, but Chasemore wasted little time in winning the toss and electing to set the tone with the blade.

With the skipper and vital keeper batsman Jordan Cleland negotiating a tidy new ball spell, the Bloods finally found their spark through seamer Tim Ford, before Nathan King (5/56) produced a devastating spell to help restrict the home side to 3/42, and eventually 4/80 when Ruwantha Kellepotha also fell victim to the all-rounder.

Vital experience, and some strong strokeplay from Josh Holden saw the Bears claw their way to 5/123 at stumps, with Brodie Emmett knuckling down the middle-order batsman to get the home side in a strong position to launch.

It didn't take long for the Bloods to make the in-roads into the remaining five wickets, with Ford trapping Emmett in front early, before the visitors found a way through Holden for a well-made 52, with King crashing into the stumps for his fifth scalp.

With Ford up and about, the Bears were unable to mount any form of late runs, rolled for 143 - losing their last five wickets on day two for just 20 runs.

Ford - who's produced some huge performances throughout a strong season - snared 5/29 from 15.3 overs to give his side a huge lifter before the chase.

But it was a disaster as soon as ex-Dandenong seamer, the competition's most in-form quick, James Wilcock (4/31) held the new ball in his right hand and came steaming in.

In the first two balls of the innings, Wilcock found a way through the dangerous King, before sending skipper Ateeq Javid packing with another searing delivery caught by keeper Cleland.

With barely time to put his pads on and settle in to watch the top-order go about its work, Dylan Quirk soon found himself right in the thick of the action, joining his brother Ryan and the pair desperately needed to steady.

But just as the pair crossed over for an absolutely crucial 52-run stand, Wilcock struck again to bring about the end of Dylan Quirk for a hard-fought 23 - and it sparked another collapse.

All-rounder Akshay Ballal fell victim not long after to spinner Ruwantha Kellepotha, and when Brayden Sharp lasted just the one delivery - courtesy of yet another piece of impressive fast bowling from Wilcock - the Bloods slumped to 5/54.

As determined as he is talented, Ryan Quirk just kept on fighting in the midst of an impressive Bears bowling attack, combining for a handy 36-run stand with veteran Craig Slocombe (16), before skipper Chasemore (3/12) who has bowled very little this season - sealed the deal with three clutch wickets to bring his side into the grand final.

Quirk remained unbeaten in a brave fourhour effort opening the batting, finishing on 58 off 170 balls and showcasing exactly what he's capable of in the red-ball game.

But the Bloods' loss sets up an epic preliminary final this weekend against their great rivals, Buckley Ridges, with the winner to take on Matthew Chasemore's side in the grand final on 21 and 22 March at Carroll Reserve.

Burden Park bowlers hit the greens as finals draw near The bowlers at Burden Park returned to the greens over the past week, with some mixed results.

The number one team, in Division 2, Section 6, faced off against Keysborough at Keysborough but Burden Park lost 0/52 to 16/75.

The number two team (six-a-side) played against Willow Lodge at Willow Lodge, and also lost - 0/29 to 4/51.

Another title to savour

By Nick Creely The DDCA's Twenty20 kings have done it again.

Buckley Ridges' extraordinary dominance in the shortest format of the game continued with yet another Dandenong District Twenty20 title - it's eighth in just 13 tournaments in what has been a stunning period of success for the little powerhouse at Park Oval. Incredibly, since the Bucks' first Twenty20 flag in the 2007/08, club greats and loyal servants Daniel 'DJ' Watson and Suren Ekanayake have played in each of them, while a host of others have played in a large chunk of the titles.

"DJ loves the finals, which is why he plays the game," his skipper David White said of the loyal club servants.

"And for Suren and a lot of the other guys as well, it's just a great testament to their loyalty."

In Victoria, let alone Australia, few local clubs have enjoyed such success in the Twenty20 format, and few can match them when push comes to shove.

The Bucks took on Springvale South at the picturesque Shepley Oval, the home of the Dandenong Cricket Club, in what always loomed as the Twenty20 grand final with enough stars to keep an astronomer busy.

It was Bloods skipper and Dandenong great Brett Forsyth who won the toss and elected to bat, but the Bucks rallied early to snare the Panthers champ without troubling the scorers, before the wily Greg Todd (1/22) found a way to pick up run-machine Ateeq Javid before he could unleash.

Despite the two early wickets, Akshay Ballal (40) and Ryan Quirk (47 not out) found another gear, with Ballal in particular the aggressor as the Bloods clawed its way to 4/141.

Brayden Sharp's more than handy 10-ball 25 was also vital in the final stages of the innings with the Bloods taking some much-

needed momentum into the changeover.

For the Bucks, Todd kept things extremely tidy in his four overs, while Jerome Jones (1/30) and Watson (1/35) were always threats with ball in hand.

But it was Watson - fittingly - who gave the Bucks the platform to add another piece of silverware to the cabinets, crunching a brutal 57 off 34 balls, a knock featuring five fours and three sixes, with the likes of White (17), Susa Pradeep (16), Jayson Hobbs (21) and Jones (17 not out) providing handy contributions as the champs ran away with a six-wicket win with 12 balls to spare.

Skipper White - who finished the tournament with 282 runs at 67.15 to clearly be the most dominant force throughout the campaign - clearly had one eye fixed firmly on the weekend's crunch final at Narre South, and hoped the momentum carried across from the Twenty20 final could be translated.

"It was a really good game of cricket, and we were really happy to turn it around," he said.

"We've been in a bit of a slump in the regular season."

While White can't exactly put his finger on why Buckley Ridges continues to be one of the dominant Twenty20 sides anywhere around, he said the group's abilities in the shortest format holds it in good stead.

"I think there are a lot of guys that are naturally suited to the format, and it's the most enjoyable format," he said.

"It's a great release for the guys from Saturday cricket, and they've been free."

In an expected tough contest against their great rivals, White admitted he would have also won the toss and batted, and pointed to the winning culture of Springvale South as a reason for why the two powerhouse clubs continually meet in the big finals.

"We've had some great clashes with Springy South, and they just know how to win, and get
