Getting stuck on personalisation Aamir Qutub has already won the Australian Young Business Leader of the Year and is appointed to many groups and boards at a high level, but winning Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from the 2019 Geelong Business Excellence Awards was close to his heart.

Aamir (pictured) landed in Geelong in 2014 ater leaving his native India and it’s in this city where he began to make his mark in a big way. He’s now the founder and chief executive of Enterprise Monkey, a web and app development company; a recent recipient of Australian Smartest Innovation of the Year Award; and the winner of the Geelong awards.

Aamir is an alumnus and member of Deakin University, a major sponsor as it happens, of the Geelong business awards.

Deakin Vice Chancellor, Professor Iain Martin, says local businesses lourishing and being part of the awards does more than just raise a company’s proile.

“It’s also a real chance,” he says, “for staf

to celebrate success, oten the very thing for which time isn’t taken to actually do, but it’s incredibly important.

“Without a thriving business community, it would be very diicult to do all the other things that we want to see in our great city.”

At 25, Aamir was appointed general manager of Geelong ICT, and also established Geelong Net-work, a large group of entrepreneurs, start-ups and small businesses. He became a member of the Chamber of Commerce in 2015, and was heavily involved in the business plan for Geelong’s Digital Hub. Sharing with his ‘people’ in Geelong, encouraging and inspiring them, was his main reason for entering the awards.

“I had so many local mentors who guided and helped me, and I wanted to give back in some way,” Aamir says. “If I can inspire other businesses to keep pursuing excellence and be part of this important local initiative, I feel happy.”

The rock star experience When Travis Ashwood, director of Braille Sign Supplies, won the Best Regional Business category of the 2019 Geelong Business Excellence Awards, he says he “felt like a rock star” as many locals stopped him in the street to congratulate the achievement.

But he reckons one of the best things about being part of the awards was the actual process of preparing his entry application.

“I decided to enter the awards because I wanted to give my hardworking team a shout-out, to thank them and give them a boost,” Travis says. “But as I was preparing the entry application, it meant I was closely reviewing all that we do.

“I looked at the business at a new angle, found new areas to focus on, and closely looked at where we were doing well and where we could improve. hat insight proved really valuable.”

Travis, who began his career as a signwriter, says he found meeting and presenting to the

judges a bit daunting at irst, but then realised they were a relaxed group and very easy to listen and talk to. He says their feedback was helpful, and their visit to his business site was thorough and illuminating.

Travis and his crew have a huge range of braille signs in stock, and they also custom make signs, either using a client’s artwork or one from his own design team.

Orders are sent out all over the country. Many builders, artists and architects use his service, as do Vision Australia on occasion.

On the local level, he loves taking braille signs into schools, where the kids are fascinated by the tactile ‘language’ and hearing all about how it works.

“Other businesses, big or small, should deinitely have a go at the awards. hey will only learn from it,” Travis concludes. “And they might get their own rock star experience!”

Mental health takes CentreStage

Ater pioneering programs to look ater young actors and actresses, it seems itting that CentreStage won the Geelong Business Excellence Awards’ prize for workplace health last year.

“A lot of people treat art and theatre as therapy or an escape,” says CentreStage managing director David Greenwood.

“We’ve become a safe place or second home for a lot of people.”

About 14 months ago, the local theatre company hired a specialist to promote good mental health within its ranks.

“Her role was not just to bring CentreStage up to national standards but to make it a leader in the performing arts community,” David says. he decision came ater David realised his staf “weren’t really equipped” to deal with a few mental health “scares” along the way.

“Many people see the character on stage but they don’t see the person – without the makeup, costume or sparkles,” he says. he theatre company has now partnered with national organisations to ofer free counselling, along with emergency response training and mental health courses, for creatives and registered teachers.

But despite the incredible progress, David admits he was “surprised” when CentreStage won the Health Promoting Workplace Award last year.

“We actually applied for a diferent category,” he says. “When we heard we were nominated for this we couldn’t believe it.”

Winning the award was a thrill but the process of entering the Geelong Business Excellence Awards was just as important, David explains. “hey help you see the bigger picture,” he says. “I was caught up in the details. I was more interested in, ‘does this costume need the hem ixed or do we need more room onstage?’

“For me, I was a bit blind to the thousands of people that are better of for being onstage.”

When he applied to the awards he asked CentreStage staf, actors and actresses to write down one thing they liked about the group.

“We used all these things to inspire our application,” he says.

He urges other businesses across Geelong to do the same.

“If you’re not sure whether to apply, ask your customers or staf what all the good things about your company are,” he says.

Business team’s ‘check-up’ led to a big win When Bill Mithen, chief executive of Give Where You Live, decided to enter last year’s Geelong Business Excellence Awards, he had a few compelling reasons.

He says the prime reason was to give his not-for-proit small business, operating as a foundation since 1954, a chance to stop and relect and assess business practices and processes.

“Taking time to focus on what we do best, and where we can improve, was a real advantage in itself for our business,” Bill says.

“It gave us a chance to measure how closely we were ‘walking the talk’, just a moment in time that culminated in something good.

“I also knew we’d get constructive feedback from the judging panel – like any successful business, we’re always open to taking advice and new ideas on board to better serve our community.”

Give Where You Live gives to the Geelong region in spades through its work within the complex and entrenched social issue of disadvantage. he organisation provides grants and

programs to deliver educational and employment opportunities to those on struggle street or who are undergoing a life crisis. his brings up another of Bill’s reasons for entering the awards.

“Winning the Best Small Business award does open doors and also strengthened our reputation as a successful and well-run business.

“Because we operate through partnering with individual donors, corporate supporters and the service delivery community, the awards lag to other savvy businesses in our region that any support ofered won’t be ‘wasted’. It will be well managed and targeted to worthwhile projects making a true diference in people’s lives.”

Would Bill encourage other businesses to enter this year?

“Deinitely,” he responds. “Do it with eyes wide open, spend time to think carefully through your application, put your best foot forward and go for it. It’s a valuable experience no matter the inal outcome.”

Chipping in for a chippy

By Luke Voogt Ater waking from lifesaving surgery to remove half his tongue, Lara carpenter Dayle Gordon was shocked to discover loved ones had raised several thousand dollars for him.

“It was up to $5000 or $6000 before I even knew what was happening,” he said on Wednesday, as he prepared for weeks of radiation therapy.

Unknown to Dayle, brother-in-law Damian Mills set up a fundraising page at the suggestion of his son Jet (Dayle’s nephew).

Jet donated $100 of his birthday money to kick-of the fundraiser, which had this week reached $11,500.

“I couldn’t believe the response and the fact that he did it in the irst place,” Dayle said. he funds will be vital for Dayle, who faces seven weeks of radiation, ive days a week, and chemotherapy, followed by months of rehabilitation.

He will be unable to work for at least six months and as a subcontractor, has no leave or beneits to cover expenses during his treatment and recovery.

Last September, doctors believed a growth on Dayle’s tongue was an ulcer.

But when the pain became unbearable, he was referred to a specialist who diagnosed him with cancer. “‘I’m too young,’ I thought, ‘there’s no way it will be cancer’,” he said.

“I didn’t believe it until I got the biopsy results back – that’s when it really hit home.”

Dayle underwent surgery in Geelong

on February 5 to remove more than half his tongue and 50 lymph nodes in his neck.

Surgeons also reconstructed his tongue with lesh from his arm during the 11-hour procedure.

Ater regaining most of his speech and throat function following surgery, Dayle admitted he was scared of going back to “square one” during radiation.

But his partner Taylah Arnott had been “very strong” supporting him, ater already losing her grandfather to a similar cancer recently, he said.

Taylah was thrilled to have Dayle home, she told the Independent.

“I had to take some time of to be at the hospital and go to appointments – which I would do in a heartbeat,” she said.

“But you’ve still got to make sure the bills are getting paid. You want to be there 24/7 but unfortunately you can’t.

“He’s a pretty tough cookie. But he’s also so kind-hearted – I think that’s why the GoFundMe’s been amazing.

“He never asks for help and he’s always there to help other people.”

Councils unite for rail solutions

By Esther Lauaki “Clogging up” already over-crowded train lines is not the way to improve services west of Melbourne, according to Geelong council. he council voted on Tuesday to unite with Wyndham council in calling for improved train services across the west.

It comes as the state and federal governments inalise plans for the multibillion-dollar airport rail link which is expected to pave the way for high-speed trains to Geelong. hree proposals are being considered for the airport link, with the preferred option using

existing railway lines between Melbourne CBD and Sunshine and the new Metro Tunnel.

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the councils want a rethink of the proposal.

Cr Asher said adding extra trains to over-crowded existing lines would derail any prospect of fast and frequent services to the western region.

“Fast and frequent rail services to Wyndham and Geelong have the potential to signiicantly impact the long-term liveability of our regions, opening up employment and education opportunities and allowing our residents to spend less time on the train,” she said.

“he [preferred] proposal for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link … would put extra trains onto already over-crowded tracks between the CBD and Sunshine. “his would devastate the prospects of achieving desperately-needed faster and more frequent services to Melbourne’s west and regional Victoria. Our trains are already slow and overcrowded, and will only get worse without action.”

Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan has been vocal in advocating for increased train services.

“It’s astonishing that instead of having more services added, we’re clogging up the tracks,”

Cr Gilligan said. “As our population continues to soar, we need other tiers of government to back us and deliver the infrastructure we need.”

Both councils are calling for: • Two new electriied metropolitan rail lines through the western suburbs to Melton and Wyndham Vale, separate from the Geelong and Ballarat lines.

• Increased track capacity between Sunshine and Melbourne.

• Electriication of Geelong and Ballarat lines.

• Connection of the Wyndham Vale and Werribee lines.

• A clear timeline and funding for these works.

Speed drop in $3.6m road spend he speed limit on three roads north of Geelong will drop by 10km/h in a joint $3.6 million safety investment, the council and state government have announced. he limit will drop from 80km/h to 70km/h on McClelland Avenue, Heales Road and Avalon Road, which together have had several fatal and serious crashes in the past 12 months. he changes are a result of council’s recent community consultation for its Lara Traic Action Plan, deputy mayor Kylie Grzybek said. “he feedback from our community has been clear that safety improvements are needed

along these roads, particularly as they become busier with our growing population,” she said.

“Road safety is absolutely critical – we don’t want to see anyone being injured, or worse, on our local roads.”

Council successfully applied to Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) to reduce the speed limit, Cr Grzybek said. “he council had a duty to respond to these requests and it’s pleasing to see action being taken.”

Council contributed $1.78 million for additional safety upgrades which was matched by a state government Fixing Country Roads

grant. About $3 million will be used to fund works to widen Anakie Road at Lovely Banks, and improve drainage and sealing, council said.

Pavement along a 3.4 kilometre stretch of the road, between Evans Road and Asher Road, would also be included.

Almost $600,000 would fund right turn lanes along McClelland Avenue at its intersections with Clover Street, Gum Drive and Austin Street-Abbey Drive, council said.

Signage for the speed limit changes would be in place by April, while the roadworks were due for completion by the end of June, council said.

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher has committed to lobby the state government to increase developer contributions, following revelations the city could be missing out on millions of dollars.

Cr Asher this week revealed plans to lobby for a contribution scheme in the council’s proposed north and west growth areas, set to house 110,000 new residents by 2050.

She said the scheme would be similar to state government’s Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC), which raises money for new infrastructure but only applies to Melbourne growth areas.

“My understanding is that it probably wouldn’t have that actual name but it’s something that I absolutely would support – increasing developer contributions.”

Cr Asher said the scheme could prevent growing pains in the growth areas similar to what had occurred in other local developments.

“I know in Armstrong Creek, it wasn’t done well. Certainly on the Bellarine [Peninsula] people are expecting infrastructure in return for development,” she said. he commitment comes ater former Geelong chair of the Urban Development Institute of Australia and Barwon Heads investment banker Tom Roe took aim at the state government’s decision not to apply the GAIC to Geelong.

A taxation scheme for the growth areas could create hundreds of millions of dollars for infrastructure, he said.

Empowering women A writer whose abusive relationship inspired her debut fantasy novel will speak at an annual Geelong Soroptimists breakfast ahead of the club’s upcoming 60th anniversary.

Michaela, 30, battled “manipulation” and “gas-lighting” in a relationship straight of high school, which her parents helped her “escape” 18 months later, she said. She channelled her experience into the journey of main character Evelyn in Purlieu, a novel she had been working on since age 16. “(Ater that relationship) I wanted it to have a greater purpose,” she said. “In the story the character experiences severe isolation from her family and friends, and sexual abuse.

“I’ve drawn upon parts of my own experience and a lot of women that I’ve spoken

to over the years.” Ater penning short ilms, scripts and plays, Michaela published the book in 2018. She hoped to inspire young women to look for “warning signs”, choose their partner wisely and not be “so desperate to be loved that they go into it blindly”.

But while she could help women, men had an equally important role in preventing domestic violence, Michaela added.

Michaela’s message would be “empowering” for the young people attending the breakfast next hursday in celebration of International Women’s Day (Sunday), long-time Soroptimist member Rita Jenkins said.

Green Spine stoush heats up

By Luke Voogt A stoush over Geelong council plans to alter the controversial Green Spine has reached the federal government, with Senator Sarah Henderson accusing state MPs of “bully boy tactics”. he locally-based senator took aim at Bellarine MP Lisa Neville, who threatened this week to freeze funding for Geelong projects ater the council voted to reinstate turning lanes on Malop Street. “he state government must stop its bullying

She blamed the state government for central Geelong’s “planning mess”, stressing that state-appointed administrators approved the $8 million Green Spine in 2017, not the council. he Green Spine is a joint council-state project aimed at linking Geelong Botanic Gardens and Johnstone Park with linear gardens. he council this week voted 6-5 to remove a bike lane on the north side of Malop Street, and reinstate right-turn lanes onto Moorabool Street.

It will also reinstate more on-street parking.

he decision followed “strong feedback” from the community, according to mayor Stephanie Asher.

“It’s become clear that our community is frustrated with the traic congestion along Malop Street and, as their elected representatives, it’s our duty to respond,” Ms Asher said. “We believe these changes will help get traic moving again, without compromising the aim of the project, which is to create a greener, more attractive city centre.”

Cr Asher said it was “unfair” to expect Geelong locals to “leave their cars at home” without state

government improving bus services irst.

Ms Neville slammed the decision as “outrageous” and “incredibly disappointing”.

“Both myself and the Planning Minister sat down with the mayor and the CEO at the end of last year to say, ‘if you do this there will be consequences’,” she told a press conference. “hose consequences are things like we’ll freeze funding for any CBD projects that belong to the City of Greater Geelong.” he state government would look at “all options” to “step in” including taking over the road, she said.

Buskers’ big break Ocean Grove sisters Jess and Aleesha Viola have won Geelong’s Best Busker with two new band members they recruited just a month before the competition. he Violas won the inal with new bass player Darcy Nichols and drummer Fergus Bateman, both 18, who they signed on to take their music to “another level”.

“We had all of these original songs that we wanted to transpose to a band and we thought it was time,” Jess said. he two new members had sparked a burst of song-writing creativity, she said.

Four bin system on the way

By Luke Voogt Bins for glass recycling will be introduced in Geelong as part of a state government plan to cut the amount of waste going to landill by 80 per cent.

Premier Daniel Andrews unveiled changes to Victoria’s recycling system on Monday, announcing that every house will receive four bins – purple-lidded bins for glass; green for food and garden organics; yellow for plastic, metal and paper; and red for household waste.

Collecting the glass separately would

ensure more efective recycling, with jars and bottles to be transformed multiple times into products including new roads and footpaths, a government spokesperson said.

Mr Andrews also announced the introduction of a container deposit scheme by 2023.

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher welcomed the changes. “he introduction of a container deposit scheme is something we have been calling on for over a year,” she said. “his, along with the other changes, will hopefully result in

signiicant improvements to our recycling system.”

Cr Asher stressed the reforms would require a “strong education campaign” to promote the changes and help residents recycle and reuse.

“However, given our community is passionate about recycling and doing everything we can to protect the environment, I’m sure this shit will be achievable,” she said. he roll-out of the new bins will start next year and occur gradually.

Meanwhile, plastic collected from Geelong will go to a new pellet facility in

Albury-Wodonga, which proponents believe will process up to 28,000 tonnes of plastics.

Cleanaway Waste Management, which acquired recycler SKM’s Victorian assets ater it was declared insolvent by the Supreme Court in August, signed an agreement with Asahi Beverages and Pact Group Holdings for the facility last Wednesday.

Cleanaway, which collects Geelong’s recycling, will provide materials through its collection and Asahi and Pact will buy the majority of the recycled pellets to use in packaging.

Historic garden on show Animal-loving Newtown octogenarian Catherine Gray is inviting the public to her “secret garden” at Claremont, a historic property her family has owned for 120 years.

Catherine will throw open the gates for the irst time in eight years to raise money for Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS).

“People have oten asked me when I’m going to have the garden open because they love to come and see it,” she said.

“People don’t have gardens now – so that’s why they love to go to a garden of the past.

“Children like it because there’s lots of little paths and things where they can run around.”

Engineer Andrew McWilliams designed the now heritage-listed Claremont in 1857 for Geelong grocer William Blair.

Catherine’s grandfather, then owner of the Albion Woollen Mills, bought the Newtown property in 1900 and it has remained in the family since.

“My grandparents lived here when they irst married,” she said. “I’ve been here for over 60 years. It’s got a lot of history but it’s part of me, I suppose, I’m used to it.”

A former nurse at he Alfred hospital, Catherine now tends her garden and glasshouse full of begonia, although she admits hiring a little help.

“I do have a gardener but I do what I can,” she said. he avid cat and dog lover, who shares Claremont with pet tabby Jim, said she was once on GAWS’ committee for 15 years.

Yan visits city by design Yan Huang has travelled the world to create car interiors, now the Anakie resident is driving into Geelong Design Week next month. he “outsider” hopes to motivate the next generation of Geelong artisans with her 20-year journey in the automotive industry.

“If I can inspire even one that would great,” she said. “I got to travel around the world and worked with some of the best designers, engineers and automotive sculptors.”

Yan said she grew up drawing on the walls at home under the care of her grandmother, while both parents worked full-time.

Ater studying art in China, Yan moved to Australia for further study at RMIT shortly before the Tiananmen Square massacre.

She was one of many Chinese students to receive an Australian residency during the

turbulent time. In her last year of study a lecturer recommended she sketch car interiors.

As an “Asian” and a “woman”, Yan said she felt like an “outsider” in the male-dominated Australian automotive industry. But soon her sketching skills would see her travel from Melbourne to Detroit, Turin to Shanghai, working for companies from Holden to Buick.

Now she works for herself, sculpting “stories” in “sinuous” works of metal, stone, wood, glass, polymer and more.

Yan will join dozens of artists, craters, performers, environmentalists and creatives in Geelong Design Week from March 19-29.

A new environmental row is brewing at Pt Lillias over a proposed Corio Bay bridge. Friends of Pt Lillias spokesman Col Edwards this week warned Geelong’s business and political leaders to keep their hands of the wetland.

Efective communication with a teacher will reap many beneits. If you want to discuss a problem or concern, here are some guidelines to get good outcomes: 1. Identify the reason for the conference in initial contact to alleviate any imagined fears

on the teacher’s part and so they can have relevant information to hand.

2. Plan – write down questions, clarify them and prioritise importance. Succinct information will assist the teacher to give clear responses.

3. Always restate your purpose for the conference right at the start – stay on topic.

4. Show a positive attitude. Be aware of tone of voice, facial expressions and body language.

5. Remain open, even if the teacher tells you something negative about your child’s behaviour or attitude. Antagonism can kill a conference stone dead.

6. Be sure discussions are led with the sole aim of increasing your child’s growth.

7. If your child has diiculties, make sure the teacher doesn’t just point out the problem without providing ideas for eliminating or reducing it.

8. Clarify and summarise as you go, so you both know what’s been meant and can agree about any conclusions.

9. Make sure you alert the teacher to any educational jargon you don’t understand and seek clariication.

10. Try to keep the time to 30 minutes or less.

Clinician Ashlee Willis explains how the hearing service, founded 40 years ago by Ian Young and his wife Wendy who has since passed away, has always responded to the theme.

‘Pawdition’ for Doris Day tribute

By Luke Voogt Country singer Melinda Schneider is inviting Geelong pooches to a special ‘pawdition’ ahead of her tribute to dog-loving songstress Doris Day. Schneider is searching for a four-legged friend to join her onstage in her irst Geelong show since the legendary performer Doris Day died last year.

“I’m looking for a dog that’s fairly chilled,

who I can walk onstage on a lead, looks at me lovingly and smiles at the audience,” Schneider said. “he winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the show and a packet of Schmackos!

“It’s a beautiful moment in the show and it will be very memorable for them.”

Schneider will sing to the dog during A Farewell to Doris, which she brings to Geelong Arts Centre on March 7 as part of a national tour.

She began the tour last September at Sydney Opera House with a show featuring a 24-piece orchestra. Music legend Day died at age 97 in May. “It’s always sad to lose such an amazing idol – she outlived all her co-stars and four husbands,” Schneider said. “She’s been a massive part of my life. I thought she’d live past 100 – she’s a bit of a survivor, the old Doris.”

Schneider had released several albums and won six Golden Guitars when she decided to

do a Doris Day show about a decade ago.

“I always wanted to do a Doris Day tribute,” she said. “I had a pretty horriic divorce at the time – I think I needed a break from singing about myself.”

Behind Day’s publicly-happy girl-next-door exterior was “a lot of sadness and trying times that no one knew about”, Schneider explained.

“I can relate to a lot of what she went through,” she said. “She didn’t have much luck with choosing partners either. It took me kissing a few frogs before I met my beautiful partner Mark Gable, from Choir Boys.”

When Schneider irst developed the show she sent the script to Day as a professional courtesy.

Day was happy with the show, inding just one “problem” with the script, Schneider said.

“She read it and said, ‘one thing I’d like you to change is my date of birth. I was born in 1924 not 1922’.”

Ironically, a journalist dug up a birth certiicate on Day’s 95th birthday several years later showing she was in fact born in 1922.

A Farewell to Doris features 23 “incredible songs” and the stories of her life, according to Schneider.

“What I love about Doris’s songs is the versatility – she did everything, from jazz and pop to musical theatre and big band extravaganzas,” she said.

Schneider will choose the lucky dog who will accompany her onstage. Dogs must be obedient and be able to take direction.

No previous stage experience is required but they must be able to walk on stage, jump onto a chair and be sung to.

Family Values begins with respected federal judge Roger celebrating his 70th birthday.

Roger wants nothing more than to reminisce with wife Sue and their three children: a leader of a born-again Christian church, a Border Force ship-hand and a let-wing activist.

But when a surprise guest turns out to be an asylum seeker on the run from Nauru, the fault lines that divide Australia play out in the family’s living room.

Eldest daughter and divorced advocate for asylum seekers Lisa demands the keys to a family holiday house to hide refugee Saba, but Roger refuses.

As Roger’s other children arrive, he, Sue and Lisa conspire to hide Saba’s identity, and mayhem ensues. he play features Andrew McFarlane, from Miss Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries and he Sullivans, in the lead role as Roger. he cast also includes fellow Australian acting stalwarts Belinda Giblin, Danielle King, Jamie Oxenbould, Ella Prince and Bishanyia Vincent, who have a host of television and onstage credits to their names.

Long-time playwright David Williamson penned the show, saying he was furious that his generation had “retired” from defending the compassionate views they claimed to have built Australia on.

“Family values is a term used by our government as a code for ‘we hate diversity’ and I think that is what my play is saying,” he said.

Zoom into ‘shrooms If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise … but it won’t be a teddy bears’ picnic. It could instead be a feast of fabulous fungi.

From around April (if it’s not scorching hot) through to August, the forest areas in the Otways and Bellarine Peninsula are treasure troves of mushrooms – from wood blewits, safron milk-caps and pines et al, to the highly prized slippery jacks.

Unless you’re a fungi aicionado (bearing in mind that most of Australia’s fungi species don’t even have a name as yet), it’s vital that newbies to mushroom foraging have an expert in tow. What can be seen as beautiful and enticing can lead to an excruciating death, while the weird and ugly can be the most delectable. hose red-spotted toadstools, for example, straight from nursery books, look incredibly cute but are poisonous, and if magic mushrooms are accidentally selected, they will give you a potentially dangerous ‘trip’ you didn’t bargain on. he best time to go mushrooming is in the early morning when lowlying mists wreathe eerily through a hushed forest, an atmosphere highly conducive to poking around tree roots, under pine trees and in likely nooks and crannies.

Take an open-weave basket for collection (which allows spores to fall through to the earth to keep the growing cycle going), wrap up in wetweather gear, step into tall gumboots and keep your eyes peeled.

Mushies are up to 90 per cent water, and delicate, so handle them as little as possible. Transport them in a single layer and use them as soon as possible. If storing in the fridge, arrange in a single layer and cover with a slightly damp tea towel.

Chefs love the bounty of wild mushrooms to be found in their patch, so expect to see these culinary treats appear on menus as a ragu, in pasta dishes and piled on brekky toast.

I have recently come around to thinking we should change the date of Australia Day if it would heal the festering unease and allow everyone to enjoy being part of fair Australia.

But our national day should be at a time of year when we can still celebrate with a good Australian barbecue, outdoor ceremonies, and other activities.

Now is the time to start thinking about this.

It was absolutely wonderful to read about the Story Dogs program being made available for students here in Geelong (“Pooch has a story to tell,� Geelong Independent, 7-2-2020).

I can well imagine the delight children must have, being able to read to dogs like Penny who calmly sit and listen.

Literacy is an essential part of every student’s educational development and the Story Dogs goal of helping children who have struggles with reading is excellent.

I ask Geelong’s state and federal MPs to advocate for government funding of this program so that all Geelong students with reading diiculties have the opportunity to be supported in such a natural and caring manner.

The real cost of going green If we continue the growth of turbines and panels worldwide, we will destroy the planet and end up mining all the untouched, wilderness areas within a few decades just to increase all mining for the raw materials needed to fabricate turbines, panels and batteries.

To produce just one wind turbine requires 900 tonnes of steel, 2500 tonnes of concrete and 45 tonnes of unrecyclable plastic (ibreglass). hat doesn’t include the raw materials for batteries or the diesal for transporting turbines to their inal destination, or the tonnes of coal and barrels of oil required for fabrication.

Sadly, solar panels require even more steel and concrete to set up solar farms.

Building enough turbines to supply half the world’s electricity would require nearly 200 billion tonnes of coal to produce the concrete and steel, along with two billion barrels of oil to make the composite (ibreglass) blades. More than 90 per cent of the world’s panels are fabricated in Asia on coal-heavy electric grids. hese are just a few of the costs to the planet by turning to renewables. he costs Labour, the Greens and climate activists don’t want told.

Blicavs backs permanent Origin Geelong’s Mark Blicavs has vowed to “have a crack” when he dons the ‘big V’ tonight while calling for State of Origin to become permanent.

“I plan to take it pretty seriously,” the big Cats defender said recently.

“I remember watching a couple of State of Origins growing up. he only state teams I’ve been involved in were from little athletics and cross country.”

Blicavs will represent Victoria tonight, alongside Cats superstar Patrick Dangerield, when the AFL resurrects State of Origin to raise funds for bushire relief.

“I don’t want to get anyone injured before the season but it’s something that I’ll be taking seriously for sure,” he said.

He suggested the AFL could bring back Origin midway through the season, like the “phenomenal” NRL version, to get players and coaches to “buy in”.

“I think it’s a massive honour and I’d like to see the State of Origin become something that happens each year.

“If they made it that prestigious event where it is an honour and people want to be selected, it’s something you’re ready to play for.”

Blicavs could ind himself matching up on big Cats forward Tom Hawkins, while Irish teammate Zach Tuohy will also line up for the All Stars.

“To see who I’m playing against and playing alongside, it’s pretty much the best of the best, so I’m very excited,” he said.

“It’s nice to play with Dusty this time, and have him burst out of packs and kick it away from my end, which will be nice.”

Blicavs also looked forward to playing with Richmond forward Tom Lynch and Collingwood’s Steele Sidebottom.

“I played AFLX with Steele Sidebottom last year and I think he’s very, very talented, the way he kicks and the way he moves,” he said.

“I think it should be pretty high-scoring and a lot of fun.”

Blicavs admitted he was surprised one of the “greatest of all time”, Gary Ablett jnr, would not play in Origin.

“I didn’t select the teams,” he laughed.

“I think he’s it and healthy and ready to go … but so be it, there’s plenty of greats in there.”

Trolling deeper diving lures has been a popular method as the ish have been pushed a bit deeper in the water due to the boat traic, but they have been popping up on the surface too.

Zac, Josh and Andrew Whitford got out Saturday morning in search of some local tuna action and were not disappointed. he boys noticed the tuna were only feeding on very small bait ish and making the change to some smaller skirts worked a treat.

Yellowtail kingish reports are still rolling through with good reports of Torquay and also in the ‘RIP’. Jigging smaller knife jigs ofshore and slightly bigger jigs for the ‘RIP’.

Live baiting and casting lures are also accounting for plenty of kings too.

Gummy sharks and snapper have been biting well ofshore just of the reefs in 30 metres of water, dropping baits such as fresh salmon and calamari are ideal with snapper to 4kg and gummies to 20kg.

Coming back inside Port Phillip Bay, and there has been plenty of good ishing options if the weather isn’t letting you get ofshore.

Big gummy sharks have been chewing well in the southern part of Port Phillip, with the South Channel holding some huge ish.

Calamari and whiting are still biting well right around the Bellarine Peninsula, with St Leonards holding the bigger numbers and better quality ish.

Werribee South is still holding lots of whiting too. One thing these spots have in common is that ishing the tide change is the biggest key to success.

Australian salmon are holding in massive numbers all over the inner and outer harbour and can be easily spotted as they are busting on the surface most of the time. Once found, casting small 3-inch minnow-style sot plastics will result in a ish nearly every cast. he Melbourne metro bream ishing at the moment has been on ire with both the Yarra and the Maribyrnong rivers all holding some great ish.

Luka Loncaric from Trellys Laverton has been ishing the system quite a bit lately and has been landing some cracking ish to 38cm, all on Ecogear SX40F hard bodies.

Other lures such as cranka crabs and small sot plastics should work well too and you’re with every chance of a mulloway ishing these systems.
