Local firefighters, as well as volunteers from as far as Bayswater and Warburton, remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots. Witness Luke Macwhirter was on his way to work at about 3am when he drove past the scene. “I recognised the farm straight away but it was hard to see the finer details of what was going on due to the heavy rain,“ Mr Macwhirter said. “All I could see was a lot of CFA trucks, a lot of smoke and some flames. “It’s very sad to see one of the last potato farms in Gemmy go up in fire.“ It’s understood crime investigators were present but the cause of the fire is still unknown. A prominent potato farm in Gembrook was engulfed in flames, with up to 80 firefighters needing over three hours to bring the blaze under control. The Gazette understands the fire began at Mountain Harvest Foods in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 19 February. CFA incident controller Andrew Clark said crews arrived on scene at about 1.30am. He said it was unknown who the alerted authorities but believes it could have been someone from a neighbouring property. “We were called because there were flames coming from the roof of the factory,” Mr Clark said. “We got to the scene and the back half of the shed was fully engulfed.”
Mr Clark said the whole back half of the factory had been reduced to rubble - approximately 80 by 40 metres destroyed, including stock inside the factory. “The weather didn’t help us at all, you would think it would but it didn’t,” he added. “It was a fairly hot and intense fire.” Firies had the building fire under control by about 3am. Ambulance Victoria confirmed they were called to the scene about 1.45am but said their services weren’t required. No one was on the property when the fire broke out. About 10 police vehicles responded to the incident at 400 Mountain Road. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA), WorkSafe and CFA hazardous materials response unit were also called to the scene. Our solar success By Mitchell Clarke Pakenham and Berwick are two of the most popular suburbs across the state for solar panel installations, according to applications for the State Government's Solar Homes program. More than 1500 homes across the two suburbs received approved applications for rebated solar panels, batteries and hot water systems. The Solar Homes program aims to reduce energy bills for families who need it most, with 69 percent of all rebates going to households with incomes less than $105,00, and at least 10 percent to those earning less than $16,000 a year. And the program has worked wonders for Tania, who lives on a disability pension and rents a three bedroom house in Pakenham. Her landlord Richard applied for a rebate for rooftop solar on the property after receiving a rebate on his own home earlier in the year. "As a tenant, it's a win-win all round," Tania said. "I've noticed my usage is less than half, I've been smarter with the way I use my power, now I'm quite proactive. "I've had two air conditioners and the washing machine going and I haven't touched the grid, it's really good." Over six months, Tania has reportedly saved $700. Neighbouring suburbs Clyde North and Cranbourne East were also ranked in the top 10 most popular suburbs for the program. "The take up of solar rebates has been incredible - particularly across Melbourne's outer suburbs and right across regional Victoria," Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said. The State Government said it was "unsurprising" that households in Pakenham and Berwick, both located in Melbourne's urban
By Mitchell Clarke An investigation into the removal of several native trees from an estate in Officer is being conducted by Cardinia Shire Council, who has turned to the public for assistance. It's understood a number of trees are believed to have been cut down from the Timbertop Estate on 7 January, without planning approval. The council's compliance services team want to speak to the owner of a burgundy Ford F250, which was seen in the vicinity, to help understand the circumstances in which the trees were cut down. Before removing or cutting back any vegetation, residents are required to check they're legally allowed to under the Cardinia Planning Scheme, local law and/or rules about native vegetation in the Victorian Government's Planning and Environment Act. Fines could apply if vegetation is removed without a planning permit when one is required. Anyone with information about the vehicle in question, or the removal of the trees should contact compliance services on 1300 787 624.

"Solar Homes is saving families hundreds of dollars on their energy bills - which is great for all Victorians, helping with the cost of living," Solar Homes Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said. "Through Solar Homes and our ambitious renewable energy targets, we're creating jobs, boosting energy supply, driving down emissions and slashing energy bills for Victorians."
State-wide, more than 61,700 solar systems have now been installed and $124.6 million in solar rebates have been paid out, 41 percent of the applications stem from households across rural and regional Victoria. The solar households have added more than 300 megawatts (MW) of new capacity to the grid.

Police say they have not noticed a significant increase in burglaries and thefts in the area. Nevertheless, the event had caused him some concern, especially given their neighbours had also suffered a break-in in the past. But he said the incident had led to some positive outcomes. "Everyone's a bit more vigilant now. It's brought the community together a bit. We're all looking out for each other more," he said. A Victoria Police spokesperson said while police haven't seen a significant increase in the number of burglaries and thefts reported in the area, they still encourage residents to
take steps to secure their home, including installing good quality locks on doors and windows, installing alarms as deterrents, locking all windows and doors of houses and cars and removing valuables like car keys, wallets and cash from plain sight. "Data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows that crime in Officer has decreased by 7.3 per cent over the past 12 months," the spokesperson said. "This includes decreases in crime categories such as burglaries, theft of motor vehicle

An Officer resident has detailed the moment he caught a thief who had attempted to break into his home. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, was at his home in the Arcadia estate with his family when he heard the garage door open and shut. Confused, the couple went out to check on their garage and cars, and were shocked to find that their garage remote control had been stolen from one of their cars, which had unfortunately been left unlocked. A dashcam and some loose change were also missing. The couple checked their CCTV and called police, and the resident drove around nearby streets looking for the thief. Unable to find him, they made a report to the police and decided to buy takeaway for dinner. But on their way to the shops they spotted the man, apparently checking for unlocked cars. The family called police to provide their location and followed as stealthily as they could. They eventually found the man, who had been intercepted by protective services officers near Cardinia Road station. The alleged thief turned out to be a teenager and was eventually taken away by police. The garage remote was later found and the resident said they quickly re-coded it to safeguard their security. The dashcam was also found on a neighbour's nature strip. Despite the circumstances, the resident said he didn't believe the youth had been "out to steal things". "I think he was just a bored kid. That doesn't excuse things, but it sounds like he'd had a pretty troubled home life as well," he said.

BUSINESS IN FOCUS
New look marine hub Pakenham-based Davey Marine has opened the doors of its new premises and again expanded to cement itself as one of the country’s leading marine businesses. Located in Australia’s largest growth corridor on 5000m2 of freeway-fronted land, the brand new 2700m2 purpose-built facility is home to both Davey Marine and Compleat Angler Pakenham, offering an expansive boating and fishing retail experience across two levels. As a newly-appointed Yamaha Marine Specialised Dealer (in addition to Honda Marine) and representing Haines Hunter and Sea Jay boats, the new premises also has a 10-bay marine workshop, including an onsite test pool. Dealer principal Adam Davey said the business’s reputation as a boat fit-out specialist was still a core focus for the new-look Davey Marine. “Fitting out trailer boats for gamefishing with high-end marine electronics, high-performance outboards and other premium gear is what we do best,” Davey said. “My background is as an aviation electrical technician, which demands absolute precision with every install and this has carried through into what we do with boats. “Our tech team has been very carefully selected to deliver first-class results, be that selling a BMT package with a single combo unit and transducer, right through to custom installs of fully-networked MFDs, radar, autopilot and other gear. “A dedicated marine electronics depart-

Casey Council sacked! By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Casey councillors, minus Sam Aziz, after the mayoral election in late 2019. 199882 Meanwhile, Casey’s councillors - minus Cr Aziz and the recently-resigned Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson - held what was expected to be their last public meeting that night. In a statement, mayor Susan Serey said she was “at a loss” at why the State Government decided to replace the councillors with administrators. “I am at a loss to see why and how the State Government can justify their decision when we have cooperated fully with any investigations while clearly demonstrating that we have been able to govern and meet our responsibilities under the Act.” Cr Serey said councillors would “remain in their positions” until the Bill passed Parliament and received Royal Assent.

It was an “inadequate” response that showed a lack of understanding by councillors on the “poor governance practices” exposed by the IBAC allegations. Ms Gardner noted that no councillors had sought refresher training on conflict of interest and governance issues. She reported on councillor cliques based on “one or more dominant personalities”, and read “disrespectful” and “inflammatory” email exchanges between councillors. “(The) unwillingness of councillors to call out unacceptable Councillor behaviour and hold each other to account appears to be motivated by a fear of conflict or further intimidation that has enabled inappropriate behaviour to go unchecked.” Ms Gardner also observed councillors “stumbling” in declaring conflicts of interest at council meetings, and failing to inform the gallery of the reasons for conflicts of interest. There was too much ‘en bloc’ voting by councillors with a lack of questioning and a low standard of debate contributing to meetings of less than an hour. Casey Council had suffered “serious damage” to its reputation and public confidence, Ms Gardner said. “I do not have confidence in the ability of the Casey City Council to meet its statutory obligations under the Act for the foreseeable future, particularly in relation to its ability to ‘act in a way that secures and preserves public confidence in the office of councillor’.” Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the Monitor reported “clear evidence” of governance failures. “Victorians expect and deserve the highest standards of governance and integrity from their local council - the monitor’s report has found clear evidence Casey has fallen short of those standards,” Mr Somyurek said. “This a very serious measure but it’s essential that Casey residents get a council that works in their interests.”
12441655-SG08-20
The State Government, backed by the Opposition, has moved to sack Casey Council and put it under the rule of administrators until 2024. It comes on the back of an ongoing IBAC investigation of serious corruption allegations involving chiefly Casey councillors Geoff Ablett and Sam Aziz and property developer John Woodman. However an explosive report by the Stateappointed Monitor Laurinda Gardner found more widespread “governance failures” and a bullying culture across the council. Failings included councilor conduct, disclosure of conflicts of interest and decision making. Her report recommended dismissing the council and appointing administrators beyond the 2020 election. On 18 February, the Government moved a Bill of Parliament to dismiss the councillors in the hope it would pass both Houses by the end of the day. “Our intention is to see this matter resolved for the Casey community as quickly as possible,” Government MP Jacinta Allen told Parliament. Opposition local government spokesman Tim Smith, in supporting the Bill, noted he would prefer a shorter administration period until March 2023. He labelled Cr Aziz as “the Christopher Skase of local government” who should immediately return to Melbourne to “face the music” at IBAC. Instead, Cr Aziz was staying in Egypt “next to a river called Denial”. Greens MP Sam Hibbens, also in support, called for reform to ban political donations from property developers. In her report, Ms Gardner found councillor bullying, intimidation and exclusion flourished due to an “embedded “avoidance culture”. She stated that amidst the IBAC Operation Sandon allegations, councillors prioritised their own reputations rather than the City of Casey. She singled out the council’s special council meeting on New Years’ Eve to establish a special planning committee out of councillors’ belief that it would help restore public confidence. The timing and the concept was of “significant concern to the community members I spoke to as an example of poor process and little regard for the community”, Ms Gardner said. “The establishment of the Special Committee indicates a willingness to pass responsibility onto another body rather than taking up the challenge of demonstrating how they can govern well, and restore community trust and confidence.” Councillors had taken an overriding view that if either one or both councillors in the middle of the IBAC investigation were removed that “everything would be all right”, she reported.

And I have my fingers crossed that if there is an election, those who have nothing to hide stand again. Kerril Burns, Devon Meadows.
Council’s ‘error’ in allowing Aziz paid leave I believe Casey Council made a significant error of judgement in granting extended paid leave to former Casey mayor Cr Sam Aziz. Council may have a legal opinion - one that has not been publicly disclosed - in support of extending leave for Aziz, but legal “opinions“ have no merit until they have been validated by a court. As the former American Attorney and now
celebrity crime author John Grisham said, some lawyers - street lawyers - fight for justice while other lawyers are selling themselves for money to the highest bidder. In light of the compelling evidence emerging from the IBAC investigations, Cr Sam Aziz’s claim for extended paid leave should have been dealt with very differently by Casey Council and mayor Susan Serey. The evidence provided by Aziz could have been made subject to further testing and any ratepayer allowances payable to Aziz placed on hold until he returns to Australia and the IBAC inquiry is concluded. The mayor of Casey Susan Serey and her council have ignored the substantial and unequivocal evidence that has emerged from IBAC - exposing Cr Sam Aziz for corrupt behaviour by taking money from a wealthy property developer - and is now advocating for Sam Aziz on the basis of an unchallenged corporate legal opinion? I have seen many letters written recently from a handful of people representing the Casey Residents Association. Who are they? Those of us in the south have never heard of them. At what was the final City of Casey Council meeting on Tuesday evening, when the mayor closed the meeting, one sole voice representing this association started accusing councillors - and those present in the council chambers clapped him out. It was followed by three cheers for the councillors. Those present in the council chambers that night were mainly representatives of community groups who have benefited from the representation of the elected councillors. I wonder how many of the people who have criticised our councillors realise just how much they have sacrificed watching their children grow up, their children’s first kick in a footy game etc. because they have been putting the residents first and attending community events. How many people in the city realise how much time is put into representing the residents? This is not full-time employment - it is a role undertaken by residents who care about their community and want to help to provide a progressive city with limited funding. Yes, that is correct - limited funding because the State Government sets a cap and regardless of the fact that the City of Casey is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, has to budget with the same rate increase as the smallest shire in Victoria with little expenditure. Our councillors work tirelessly, and even with the IBAC investigation, who is to say the results have been detrimental to Casey? I was brought up to believe that in Australia a person is innocent until proven guilty - but our councillors, even with nothing to answer have been proven guilty. Going forward we are going to have an administrator until the elections in 2024. I hope all of those who have opposed our councillors accept your destiny. There will no longer be any representation for residents with an administrator in place. We went through this when the cities of Cranbourne and Berwick merged as the City of Casey - we were lucky because we had a fantastic CEO in Mike Tyler who had his email turned on 24/7.

Star News readers reacted to news that Casey Council had been sacked on the back of allegations aired at the IBAC corruption hearting and that a key player in the affair, Cr Sam Aziz, thought it was a “travesty of justice” and that he was desperate to return from Egypt, where he has been holed up through the entire proceedings… Simon Loveless: Four years of taxation without representation? Outrageous. We were months away from being able to have our own say on who should be on our council and that right should not be taken away. Gaye Guest: Ultimately two individuals killed democracy in the City of Casey all because of greed. This downfall is the stuff movies are made from. I wonder in the dark of night if they have any regrets. Catherine Boots - So laughable - a council that has delivered so much for residents. Where, when and what? Giles Gibson: How convenient it was that he (Sam Aziz) sold everything before he left and went to a country without an extradition treaty. Trace Ktrautzman: Sorry, but why don’t I buy his BS. Surely there are a few ships he can jump on - even small plane rides with rests in between are do-able if he’s “dying to get home”. Pffft! Kath Maloney: So all these health issues only appeared once he got to Egypt because that’s an awful lot of bad luck. Or they were pre-existing and he was okay to fly out, just not back. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Cranbourne East and Clyde North are among the top 10 solar savvy suburbs in Melbourne. This is according to the State Government Solar Homes program - with more than 71,700 successful applications from Victorians for rebated solar panels, solar batteries and solar hot water systems. Minister for Solar Homes Lily D’Ambrosio met a resident living in a unit managed by SouthEast Housing Cooperative in Cranbourne, who is already saving significantly on her power bills through rooftop solar. Community housing residents with solar systems on their roofs receive 100 per cent of the power bill savings created by the panels ensuring the energy cost savings available under Solar Homes reach those who need it most. The not-for-profit housing providers receive the rebate and pass on the bill savings to their tenants. More than 61,700 solar systems have now been installed and $124.6 million in solar rebates have been paid out, with 41 per cent of solar applications from households across rural and regional Victoria. Ken and Lyn Loveless, a retired couple who
live at the Lifestyle Community Village at Skylark Boulevard in Clyde North, decided to sign up to the Solar Homes rebate after feeling the cost-of-living impacts, saying it was a way “you can save money and help balance the budget and at the same time”. “We have to budget and we have to be careful with our money and this is a good way of saving money. I would recommend that everybody - no matter what your salary or what you’re earning capacity is, that you seriously consider this,” Mr Loveless said. Solar Homes is reducing energy bills for families who need it most, with 69 per cent of solar rebates going to households with incomes of less than $105,000, and at least 10 per cent to those earning less than $16,000 a year. The State Government has also delivered 191 solar systems directly to community housing organisations. When completed, Solar Homes will have created 5,500 jobs and reduced the State’s carbon emissions by almost 4 million tonnes - the equivalent of taking one million cars off the road.

Joy abounds at St John St John of God Berwick Hospital is proud to introduce their new bundle of Joy - a new lower cost private maternity model. Joy offers privately insured patients a more affordable way to use their cover and access a high end private hospital experience by reducing out of pocket costs. In fact, patients will only be $990 out of pocket*! Joy, oh, joy! Joy is a new option for maternity care at St John of God Berwick Hospital, a hospital which now has two maternity models for patients to choose from. In addition to the Joy package, patients can still choose their own obstetrician with the traditional maternity care package. No matter which package patients choose, they will receive the same exceptional care once they are admitted to hospital, including a single room with bedding for their partner. Joy enables patients to save money by providing a collaborative model of care, where patients will be seen by a whole team of specialist obstetricians and midwives, rather than just one doctor. Joy patients will be cared for and monitored by the rostered obstetrician at each of their appointments and at the birth of their baby. Each of these obstetricians is a joy - compassionate, highly trained and experienced. Delivering a baby at St John of God Berwick Hospital comes with all the education parents need as they embark on their new family life. Paediatric first aid, sleep and settling workshops and one on one lactation advice are just some of the ways new parents are supported.

Dutch treats By Brendan Rees A taste of the Netherlands is set to return to Akoonah Park, Berwick on Saturday 7 March. The Holland Festival is expected to attract hundreds of people where people of Dutch origins or those with an interest in the Dutch culture can enjoy a great day out with food vendors, stall holders, exhibitions, and of course clog dancing workshops on offer. Supported by the Rotary Club of Casey, the family-fun event includes performances and displays from artists as well as face painting, pony rides, a fun Dutch 'shuffle-board game' for people of all ages, and a petting zoo. New attractions include a tour of the Netherlands through a virtual reality experience as well as a chance to dress up in your favourite
Dutch costume to receive a free printed photo. The festival is also dog friendly with canine fashionistas encouraged to put their best paw forward in a Dutch costume for the 'Best dressed Pooch Parade'. A bar and continuous live entertainment will run from 10.30am until 6pm. There will be bands, choirs, singers and more performing in both Dutch and English. More than 30 food vendors will offer a variety of food including olliebollen (Dutch Donuts), frikandel (Dutch Sausages), Stroopwafers (Syrup wafers), and Kibbeling (fish bites). Every cent of profit on the day goes to charity through the Rotary Club of Casey. Gates open at 10am. To book visit: www. hollandfestival.org.au
Casey residents are gearing up to take part in a charity walk at Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens on Saturday 22 February for a worthy cause. The annual walk, hosted by the Jared Dunscombe Fund, is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013. Mr Dunscombe died when he fell from his bike and was struck by a truck and trailer travelling in the same direction while taking part in the Rotary fund-raising event - 'Ride to Conference'. This year, funds will be raised Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, who provide medical treatment for children from developing countries in the form of life giving and/or dignity restoring surgery. To help raise the much needed funds, a five-kilometre fundraiser walk will be held at Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens to help pay for the flight of a young child to Australia for heart surgery. In 2014, the Jared Dunscombe Fund raised funds to bring seven-year-old Aze Da Cunha from East Timor to Australia for life-saving heart surgery, which was not available to him in his home country. The surgery at Monash Medical Centre was successful and the young boy has since returned home and is living a healthy and active life. The Dunscombe family had hosted Aze and his father in their home during their stay in 2014. "It's difficult to imagine being a parent who is watching their child dying from a heart condition and not having the means to help them. As a parent, all you want to do is keep your

Local hope in the running By Russell Bennett Pakenham’s own Mr Quickie has rapidly built up a booming following throughout Gippsland and the south east as he prepares for a tilt at the $5 million All-Star Mile at Caulfield next month. The first Group 1 winner to be trained out of Racing.com Park, the four-year-old gelding was seventh in the voting for the All-Star Mile before the leaderboard blackout came into effect in the build-up to the announcement of the final field later today (Thursday). The 10 highest vote-getters receive automatic entry into the race. Whole communities, cities, and even states rallied behind horses from across Australia and New Zealand in the race to secure a spot in the final field for the 1600-metre showdown. Thousands of votes were cast for the Phillip Stokes-trained star before online voting closed on Sunday night. The leaderboard blackout came into effect on the voting website at 10pm last Friday night. In a huge boost to the Mr Quickie campaign, legendary hoop Damien Oliver took on the ride for the event. Jeff O’Connor from Stokes Racing told the Star News that locals from across the region, and even further into Gippsland, were doing whatever they possibly could to help Mr Quickie’s cause. “It’s been proven, with this race, that horses from interstate don’t seem to have much trouble getting in - if you’ve got one good horse in South Australia, (and) one good horse in Queensland, the whole state will get behind them,” he said. “This year we’re seeing the same with New Zealand, too. “We know the public around this area is right behind Mr Quickie, and that’s definitely helped the voting and getting him into the race.” O’Connor acknowledged the significance of such a proud and passionate racing community having its own runner to rally behind.
Locals got right behind Mr Quickie in his quest to make the All-Star Mile. “From Pakenham, to Longwarry, to Moe, to Sale and even Bairnsdale - they’re all getting behind him,” he said. “I’d like to think anyone from Pakenham to out in the south-east is right behind him.” O’Connor also emphasised the importance of having the support of the Pakenham Racing Club behind Mr Quickie’s push. “It’s a young, progressive club and it’s a new beginning for them,” he said. “To have them support this the way they have has been fantastic.” Mr Quickie hasn’t raced since the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup in October, with connections - including Wylie Dalziel and Peter Moody as part of the ownership group - turning down the chance to race him in the Mel-
bourne Cup, despite being guaranteed a start. But his first-up form is typically impressive, and after a couple of barrier trials in the coming weeks, O’Connor said he’d be ready for his “grand final”. Wade Calderwood from the Pakenham Racing Club explained just how huge it would be to see the locally-trained Queensland Derby winner - which also finished an impressive third in the Makybe Diva Stakes - take his place in the All-Star Mile field. “Pakenham Racing Club members and locals have really got behind the initiative to vote for Mr Quickie,” he said. “Given he is our first Group 1 winning horse from Pakenham, it would be a huge result to see him get up for our local club.
Picture: SUPPLIED “Phillip Stokes has had a tremendous strikerate since setting up base here over 12 months ago, and it would be further testament to the quality of the Pakenham training facilities and set-up to see Mr Quickie salute the judge at Caulfield on March 14. “All of Pakenham will be riding with him.” Mr Quickie beat eventual Melbourne Cup winner Vow and Declare to the line in the Queensland Derby last June. To check out how Mr Quickie fared in the All-Star Mile voting once the results are released, visit www.allstarmile.com.au. Those who voted for their favourite horse in the All-Star Mile are in the running to win a share in $500,000, with the first prize being $250,000.
Ex-AFL stars join the nest in major West Gippy coup By Russell Bennett Two of the most respected players of the AFL’s modern era will don the Inverloch Kongwak colours in 2020 in an incredible coup for the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition powerhouse. Four-time Hawthorn premiership-winning superstar Jarryd Roughead will join younger brother Cam in the Sea Eagles’ lineup in a handful of games this coming season, while former Western Bulldogs skipper Bob Murphy is also set to pull the boots back on - this time for the club coached by his brother-in-law, Ben Soumilas. While Roughead now has a full-time role within St Kilda’s football department at AFL level, it’s understood he’ll be available for a number of games for Inverloch Kongwak this season - almost certainly enough to qualify him for the finals, should the Sea Eagles progress. Still only 33, the Leongatha product was a two-time All-Australian, won the Coleman Medal in 2013, and captained his beloved Hawthorn in 2017 and 2018 before retiring last year - following a six-goal haul in his final game. Fellow Gippsland Power alum Bob Murphy, originally from Warragul, played over 300 games for the Western Bulldogs, where the 37-year-old remains one of the club’s most revered figures. He, too, is a two-time All-Australian, and was named captain of the side in 2015. Murphy currently co-hosts 1116 SEN’s weekday drive show, ‘Bob and Andy’, alongside Andy Maher and also has a number of other football media roles, including with Fox Footy. Like Roughead, Murphy, too, is set to be available on multiple occasions for the Sea Eagles in their upcoming campaign, and it’s hoped he, too, could play enough games to 22 STAR NEWS

Inverloch Kongwak president Peter Butcher told the Star News how thrilled he is to bring both former AFL stars into the fold. He said Roughead’s relationship with the Clark boys - Rowan and Dylan - was crucial in him joining the Sea Eagles, and it was actually Roughead who played the most significant role of all in bringing great mate Murphy into the fold.

Roughead is locked in to play the Sea Eagles’ first three games of the season - against Kooweerup, Dalyston, and Cora Lynn. Soumilas - an incredibly highly respected figure in Gippsland football - has returned to the helm at Inverloch for 2020 after a year out of the role in 2019. He coached the Sea Eagles to the inaugural WGFNC senior premiership in 2017. The announcements come at an incredibly
exciting time for the Sea Eagles, who have also just unveiled state-of-the-art netball facilities. Former North Melbourne and Melbourne utility Cam Pedersen will again don the red, white and blue of Phillip Island in 2020 after playing an integral role for the Bulldogs in their undefeated premiership season in 2019 a campaign in which he was also the run-away winner of the WGFNC’s senior best and fairest award. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Demons’ dream start By Tyler Lewis Melbourne’s AFLW side remains unbeaten after putting on a show under the Friday night lights against the Western Bulldogs. The Dees put on a clinic at Whitten Oval in front of a vocal crowd, winning 4.8 (32) to 2.0 (12). Chantel Emonson got the ball rolling for the Dees, nailing the first major of the match only minutes in. Relentless pressure from the Melbourne outfit directly led to its second major on the board. Leading by nine at the first interval, the game went into lockdown; a slippery affair took place as only three points were added to the score, all from the boots of Melbourne players.
The third term saw the Dees skip away to a match-defining lead, Casey Sherriff slotted her first career major, showing she wasn’t fooled by the wet conditions, slamming it off the deck through the big sticks. Maddi Gray immediately added another, converting her set shot from close range to push the Demons 26 points ahead. The Dogs were the only side to add a major in the final term, but it was far too late as the Demons secured their second win from as many matches. Despite the emphatic victory, the night was soured by the devastating knee injury to Ainslee Kemp, her third ACL injury, but her first in her left knee. The Demons take on St Kilda under lights again this Friday night, looking to make it three from three.

Some of the great football and netball characters of the Yarra Valley and south east are set to once again come together for a wonderful cause with the Valley Vicious Rett Awareness Cup back for another year and set to be even more entertaining. On a night dedicated to banding together as a community with the purpose of fighting and raising funds for the devastating disease that is Rett Syndrome, Lee Lawrence is once again hoping for crowds to make their way out and support the cause, which will be held on Saturday 29 February at Healesville Sporting Complex. “Last year we ended up raising around $20,000, and this year we’re aiming higher, about $50,000, and that is achievable,” Lee told the Star News. “Off the jump we’ve raised around $18,000, and I think we’ll do it, but we’ll see how we go. “We’re just praying on good weather.” Lee runs the popular Facebook page ‘Valley Vicious Footy and Netball Banter’, which he started when his daughter, Gypsy was diagnosed with Rett - a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females and with a prevalence of one in about 15,000 females - all with the aim of raising awareness and raising funds to find a cure. Infants and children with the disorder cease to acquire new skills and gradually lose previously acquired abilities, such as control of the hands and the ability to vocalize most sounds and words. Lee said while the disease is cruel and debilitating, Gypsy has never dropped her spirit and continues to smile no matter the circumstances. “She’s been going really well - we do have to help her quite a lot with her eating now, but that’s really the only noticeable thing of late,” he said. “She’s just always happy, and she’s started school this year which is awesome. “So she’s doing three days up at Kinglake and two days down at Mount Evelyn Special School. It knocks her around a little, but she’s going really, really well.” Lee said that Rett Syndrome Australia is doing everything it can to cure the disorder, and is confident that will one day become a reality. “From what we hear, they’re very positive, they do believe that it’ll be one of the brain disorders that’ll be cured,” he said. “They’re grateful of what we give them, and they’ve assured me they will find a cure one day.”
The Facebook page has since attracted a cult following in the Valley, and next Saturday’s event is set to be a monster day of sport, with a large crowd set to be treated to some excellent football and netball action. With the gates opening at 12pm, the All-Star netball clash will kick off at 2pm, before the Valley Vicious ladies games featuring all-stars from around the Valley against the Healesville ladies premiership team bounces the ball at 2.30pm. During half-time of the ladies game, there will be an Auskick game on the oval, as well as a range of activities for kids and adults across the game. The night’s main event, the Valley Vicious All Stars versus the Valley Vicious Vets All Stars, will close out the day, with a range of speakers, including a band post-game, set to entertain the crowd. There will be a ‘Big Splash to Beat Rett’ as well as a Valley Vicious Electrics Super Booth competition that is sure to also keep fans engaged on the day. Lee said the introduction of the ladies game this season - as well as the football and netball matches was simply something that had to be done this time around. “Adding the girls’ game is pretty much a nobrainer,” he said. “Girls footy has kicked off massively, and adding the girls have been fantastic. “We’ve got all these group chats with all the teams and the energy the girls show and the way they promote has been fantastic.” Officer is one south-east club once again heavily involved in the event, and president Nick McLennan urged everyone in the community to get involved and to join in the fight against Rett. “What Lee and the team at Valley Vicious are doing is amazing. They’ve managed to bring an entire sporting community together over a single cause,“ he said. “On the surface their Facebook page is a bit of fun, they’ve used humour to build their audience whilst subtly educating them about Rett Syndrome. It’s genius. “Over the journey to date Lee has been able to raise tens of thousands of dollars, I take my hat of to him. As a club we’re just happy to be involved and we’re happy to play our part in assisting Lee to raise awareness and much needed funds to help fight Rett Syndrome. “If you’re free on Saturday make your way up to Healesville for what is sure to be an awesome day.“ The day will cost $10 for entry, with kids under 16 getting in for free.
