By Andrew Cantwell There were tears, defiance and a lot of reminiscing as sacked Casey councillors fronted their last official meeting at Bunjil Place on Tuesday night 18 February.

Before a packed gallery stacked with many well-wishers and a handful of detractors, the councillors put on a brave face through the brief business of the meeting before launching into councillor statements led by mayor Susan Serey.

The mayor paused several times during her address, wiping back tears, as the emotion of the moment overwhelmed her.

After a glowing account of the state of the City of Casey, Cr Serey took aim at the Government Monitor’s report which, she said, was scant on evidence for the claims made, and provided no basis for the dismissal of the council.

Other councillors spoke in turn, each eulogising the city and council, picking highlights and favoured moments.

There was no mention of IBAC, no acknowledgement of the circumstances which led to their sacking, and no apologies.

The final act of the embattled council was not the dignified farewell they had wished for ... more farce than funereal.

In a surreal moment, the gallery - which had risen for a standing ovation of last speaker Cr Wayne Smith - continued to clap as Cr Serey tearfully declared the meeting closed; and a well wisher called for three cheers for the council.

The clapping drowned out the voices of the few detractors, who appeared stunned by what they were seeing.

‘It’s a travesty’: says Aziz

By Brendan Rees Embattled former Casey mayor Sam Aziz has labelled the State Government’s move to sack Casey Council as “travesty of justice for a council that has delivered so much for its residents“.

Speaking to Star News exclusively from Cairo, Egypt, Cr Aziz, who is at the centre of an anti-corruption commission inquiry, also scorned claims he was in hiding, saying he’s “dying to get back home”.

He said “everything had been put on hold” due to his health and hoped to defend the “absurd allegations” made against him.

“If I could lose my right arm and come back tomorrow I would,” he said.

He took aim at the State Government, which introduced a bill to dismiss Casey Council on Tuesday 18 February, saying: “What is the point of a process if you’re going to pre-empt the outcome before it is even known? What?

Based on a few people giving uncorroborated evidence; based on silly surveillance video footage of a councillor meeting with essentially a constituent”.

Cr Aziz, who is alleged to have pocketed $900,000 from a developer and deliver favourable property decisions, hit back at the public outcry, saying people had been “harsh” and “violently unfair” without the opportunity to defend himself.

“I haven’t been able to keep up with all the crap that is coming out of the media,” he said.

“I’ve been convicted even before I’ve been put on trial; even before I’ve been able to give evidence.

“My confidence in the journalism profession is pretty much the lowest it’s been all my life because of all the crap reporting that's happening,” he said.

Cr Aziz admitted investing money with developer John Woodman but blamed it on the stress caused by the break-up of his first marriage.

“When I was going through a very, very traumatic and very ugly marriage break-up I made a silly mistake of withdrawing money in cash and investing it with the Woodman company,” he said.

He also said he had an eye condition as a result of diabetes - which required monthly injections but the medication was not available in Cairo.

“If I don’t get those injections I’ll eventually go blind and in under 12 months.”

He described being in Cairo as “scant” and the main reason “I’m dying to get back home Melbourne is everything to me”.

Cr Aziz also hit back at claims he “skipped” the country to avoid the public hearings.“People have taken advantage of my absence; called it a form of escape which it wasn’t and still isn’t.

“The allegation that I sold my house to skip the country is again total b------t.

“I sold my house for personal reasons because I could no longer keep up the mortgage repayments on a property that I was only using a couple of times a month to see my children,” he said.

“I told IBAC I was going to do that. I was upfront and open. I fully cooperated with their investigations”.

Cr Aziz felt for his family back home who had been victimised under the public eye.

“I feel for my poor wife, my beautiful daughters, who have been stalked by the media in their own home. I feel for my little boys who are at school and have probably been bullied like there’s no tomorrow,” he said.

He said his wife travelled to see him “because I was that unwell” but couldn’t stay with him for extended periods of time.

“I was experiencing black outs and all sorts of horrible things”.

MAV, VLGA back ‘regrettable but necessary’ dismissal

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Local government peak-bodies have backed the imminent sacking of Casey councilors.

Victorian Local Governance Association’s president Cr Lambros Tapinos said the dismissal was “regrettable” but necessary.

Allegations against the council had raised “serious concerns” about its governance, Cr Tapinos said.

“Councillors are required to make decisions on behalf of their community with transparency and accountability.

“While the removal of the City of Casey councillors is regrettable because the commu-

nity will be without elected representatives, it is, nonetheless, a necessary step in ensuring public confidence and trust remain integral to local government.”

The Municipal Association of Victoria described the move as a “last resort” and “the first step in the process of restoring community trust”.

Deputy president Cr Ruth Gstrein said the ongoing IBAC Operation Sandon corruption inquiry had “understandably shaken public confidence” in City of Casey due to the behaviour of “a small number of Casey councillors”.

“This behaviour is not representative of our local government sector and does not reflect

community expectations of their council.

“The State Government’s decision, following the report of the independent monitor, is an opportunity for Casey Council to start the process of rebuilding trust with their community.”

LGPro, which represents local government professionals in Victoria, said it was unfair that council officers “bear the brunt of poor and inappropriate behaviour of elected officials”.

Council officers are “the people who live and breathe the brand each and every day”, LGPro president Liana Thompson said.

“These are the people who are doing wonderful work in the community, who are proud

of what they do and who have built a culture of openness and transparency but by virtue of association, are tarred with the same brush.”

Ms Thompson looked forward to proposed “tougher checks and balances” as part of the Local Government Bill 2019.

Measures, such as mandatory training for councillors, would “improve performance and accountability” and “lessen the likelihood of unacceptable behaviour”.

She noted under the new Bill, the Local Government Minister could sack individual councillors rather than the entire council.

“This will ensure that all councillors are not made to suffer because of one bad apple.”

Sack shame for council!

The State Government, backed by the Opposition, has moved to sack Casey Council and put it under the rule of administrators until 2024.

It comes on the back of an ongoing IBAC investigation of serious corruption allegations involving chiefly Casey councillors Geoff Ablett and Sam Aziz and property developer John Woodman.

However an explosive report by the Stateappointed Monitor Laurinda Gardner found more widespread “governance failures” and a bullying culture across the council.

Failings included councilor conduct, disclosure of conflicts of interest and decision making.

Her report recommended dismissing the council and appointing administrators beyond the 2020 election.

On 18 February, the Government moved a Bill of Parliament to dismiss the councillors in the hope it would pass both Houses by the end of the day.

“Our intention is to see this matter resolved for the Casey community as quickly as possible,” Government MP Jacinta Allen told Parliament.

Opposition local government spokesman Tim Smith, in supporting the Bill, noted he would prefer a shorter administration period until March 2023.

He labelled Cr Aziz as “the Christopher

Skase of local government” who should immediately return to Melbourne to “face the music” at IBAC. Instead, Cr Aziz was staying in Egypt “next to a river called Denial”.

Greens MP Sam Hibbens, also in support, called for reform to ban political donations from property developers.

In her report, Ms Gardner found councillor bullying, intimidation and exclusion flourished due to an “embedded “avoidance culture”.

She stated that amidst the IBAC Operation Sandon allegations, councillors prioritised their own reputations rather than the City of Casey.

She singled out the council’s special council meeting on New Years’ Eve to establish a special planning committee out of councillors’ belief that it would help restore public confidence.

The timing and the concept was of “significant concern to the community members I spoke to as an example of poor process and little regard for the community”, Ms Gardner said.

“The establishment of the Special Committee indicates a willingness to pass responsibility onto another body rather than taking up the challenge of demonstrating how they can govern well, and restore community trust and confidence.”

Councillors had taken an overriding view

that if either one or both councillors in the middle of the IBAC investigation were removed that “everything would be all right”, she reported.

It was an “inadequate” response that showed a lack of understanding by councillors on the “poor governance practices” exposed by the IBAC allegations.

Ms Gardner noted that no councillors had sought refresher training on conflict of interest and governance issues.

She reported on councillor cliques based on “one or more dominant personalities”, and read “disrespectful” and “inflammatory” email exchanges between councillors. “(The) unwillingness of councillors to call out unacceptable Councillor behaviour and hold each other to account appears to be motivated by a fear of conflict or further intimidation that has enabled inappropriate behaviour to go unchecked.”

Ms Gardner also observed councillors “stumbling” in declaring conflicts of interest at council meetings, and failing to inform the gallery of the reasons for conflicts of interest.

There was too much ‘en bloc’ voting by councillors with a lack of questioning and a low standard of debate contributing to meetings of less than an hour.

Casey Council had suffered “serious damage” to its reputation and public confidence, Ms Gardner said.

“I do not have confidence in the ability of

the Casey City Council to meet its statutory obligations under the Act for the foreseeable future, particularly in relation to its ability to ‘act in a way that secures and preserves public confidence in the office of councillor’.”

Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the Monitor reported “clear evidence” of governance failures.

“Victorians expect and deserve the highest standards of governance and integrity from their local council - the monitor’s report has found clear evidence Casey has fallen short of those standards,” Mr Somyurek said.

“This a very serious measure but it’s essential that Casey residents get a council that works in their interests.”

Meanwhile, Casey’s councillors - minus Cr Aziz and the recently-resigned Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson - held what was expected to be their last public meeting that night.

In a statement, mayor Susan Serey said she was “at a loss” at why the State Government decided to replace the councillors with administrators.

“I am at a loss to see why and how the State Government can justify their decision when we have cooperated fully with any investigations while clearly demonstrating that we have been able to govern and meet our responsibilities under the Act.” Cr Serey said councillors would “remain in their positions” until the Bill passed Parliament and received Royal Assent.

How it all unravelled...

2018 28 October: The Sunday Age accuses Casey Cr Sam Aziz of shunning council staff advice to back decisions favouring property developer John Woodman and associated firms. Other claims include Mr Woodman bullying Casey planning staff, and Woodman-linked donations to Crs Geoff Ablett, Susan Serey and Amanda Stapledon’s state election campaigns.

2 November: Cr Aziz hits back, telling Star News that the story was “very poor journalism” and “totally nonsense”. Cr Ablett declined to comment.

2019 24 October: Victoria’s Independent Broad-based AntiCorruption Commission (IBAC) announces an inquiry into alleged corrupt conduct involving Casey councillors and property developers.

18 November: Operation Sandon hearings begin.

In a bombshell opening, IBAC hears that Cr Aziz received close to $900,000 and Cr Ablett more than $300,000 from Mr Woodman.

Mr Woodman testifies that former mayor and Woodman “lobbyist” Lorraine Wreford acted as a cash courier between Mr Woodman and Cr Aziz.

IBAC hears that Cr Aziz won’t appear at the hearing, having flown to Egypt about four weeks earlier. He’d sold his house soon after being served with a search warrant, it was alleged. IBAC froze the sale’s proceeds.

IBAC asserts that Crs Ablett and Stapledon’s 2014 state election campaigns received “significant” donations from Mr Woodman’s company Watsons Pty Ltd. 19 November: Mr Woodman testifies that it was a “coincidence” that he paid Cr Ablett $17,500 and denied knowledge of paying Cr Aziz $80,000 in the lead-up to a vote on rezoning Cranbourne West land (Amendment C219).

The urgent council motion, introduced by Cr Aziz in 2014, was preceded by a briefing note from Mr Woodman to Crs Aziz, Ablett and Stapledon’s private email accounts.

Mr Woodman said he couldn’t recall depositing $5000 under a false name into Cr Ablett’s account.

He defended making payments to Save Cranbourne West Action Group leader Ray Walker.

Mr Woodman admitted “funnelling” $5000-a-month to Cr Aziz as a consultant for firm Spicer Thoroughbreds. It was an excuse to pay Cr Aziz for his role as a councillor, he conceded.

Casey mayor Susan Serey declares the council is “fully cooperative” with IBAC. She says it’s inappropriate to comment on “specific allegations”.

20 November: Cr Aziz tells a 3AW Radio interview that he would fly back to Melbourne “possibly in the next seven to 10 days”. He denied ever accepting a bribe.

At IBAC, Mr Woodman concedes a financial arrangement involving Cr Aziz bringing him $600,000 in a suitcase was “corruption”. IBAC claims that Cr Aziz received a $220,000 “return”, mostly within 10 months.

21 November: Mr Woodman says he invested $50,000 in supporting certain candidates in the 2016 Casey Council elections.

25 November: Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek describes the IBAC allegations as “concerning”.

At IBAC, Mr Woodman is labelled a “king maker” for helping Cr Stapledon’s successful bid for mayor in 2018-’19.

He says he lifted his 2018 state election donation to Cranbourne ALP candidate Pauline Richards from $5000 to $20,000 - out of his “enthusiasm” to get C219 approved.

IBAC heard he donated more than $150,000 to the ALP ahead of the election, including $20,380 to then-Attorney General Martin Pakula’s campaign in Keysborough.

He donated $16,425 to Liberal candidate (now Casey mayor) Susan Serey, IBAC was told.

Ablett that they both stood to lose a “s*** load of money” due to faltering property projects before Casey Council. Mr Woodman told IBAC he was to pull out of buying part of Cr Ablett’s rural property for $350,000 if C219 was not approved.

26 November: IBAC hears a tapped call between Mr Woodman and Cr Ablett, discussing the departure of CEO Mike Tyler in 2018. Cr Ablett brags that he “f***ing nailed” Mr Tyler.

Mr Woodman denies to IBAC that he instigated Mr Tyler’s removal.

IBAC hears that Cr Aziz threatened to reverse the council’s support for the Hall Road intersection, Cranbourne West unless Mr Woodman paid him “hundreds of thousands of dollars”. Cr Aziz was later paid $25,000-amonth by Mr Woodman for a Smart Cities consultancy.

Mr Woodman refers to former state MP Judith Graley as a “friend” for her support for Amendment C219 and Martha Cove on the Mornington Peninsula.

27 November: Mr Somyurek announces the appointment of a Monitor, Laurinda Gardner, at Casey Council “effective immediately”.

Former mayor Lorraine Wreford tells IBAC that Cr Aziz conspired for her to commit perjury about the amount of the loan in the suitcase.

Cr Aziz pledged to help Mr Woodman sue Casey Council over allegations that the developer bullied council staff, a tapped conversation revealed.

2 December: Premier Daniel Andrews confirms he’d attended lunches with Mr Woodman three times in 2016 and 2017.

In IBAC, a phone tap is played in which Cr Ablett declares he was “sick of rigging stuff” with Cr Aziz’s “bloc”. He told IBAC that Cr Aziz put pressure on a “bloc” including Crs Stapledon, Wayne Smith, Damien Rosario and a “very, very ill” councillor.

Cr Ablett tells IBAC he couldn’t remember being aware of Mr Woodman’s involvement in C219 in late 2013 and early 2014. In that time, Mr Woodman paid him about $25,000 and Cr Ablett voted on the matter.

3 December: IBAC hears that Cr Ablett advised Save Cranbourne West Action Group on lobbying for C219. He’d declared a conflict of interest and declined to vote on the issue in council since 2015.

4 December: Woodman consultant Megan Schutz admits going too far in lobbying for Woodman’s interests in Casey - such as coaching Cr Aziz with texts during a council debate.

31 December: Casey councillors convene a special meeting on New Years’ Eve to create a Special Planning Committee to be led by Cr Rex Flannery and independent panellists.

2020 31 January: Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek announces an extension of City of Casey Monitor’s tenure to 11 February.

18 February: The State Government tables the Monitor’s report, and moves a Bill to dismiss Casey’s councillors. The Bill passes both Houses of Parliament that day.

Roads chaos after rains

By Brendan Rees A massive clean-up was underway after Casey was hit by a torrential deluge on Friday afternoon, 14 February, leading to flashing flooding, fallen trees, and traffic mayhem.

Cars were left underwater at various locations including Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre and Berwick Lodge Primary School, with dozens of roads flooded, causing chaos during peak hour.

Residents reported the heavy rain was the worst they had experienced in decades, as they mopped up an inch of water in their homes while others said their kitchen and power were damaged, and a nature strip “disappearing“ under water.

Narre Warren State Emergency Service fielded 97 calls in about seven hours to 9.45pm, ranging from flooding, fallen trees and building damage.

Among the areas flooded was Narre Warren train station and Narre Warren North Road where all southbound lanes on were closed at the Princes Highway. Flooding also affected Magid Drive in Narre Warren and Ballarto Road in Clyde.

On the Monash Freeway, delays were back to Ernst Wanke Road while the Bourke Road exit inbound was also affected by flooding but traffic was able to exit as VicRoads crews attended the scene.

A resident reported roads at Cranbourne Park Primary school being under water during pick-up time as flooding also caused traffic pain on Pound Road, Hampton Park. The office of Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards on Sladen Street was also flooded as water poured through the ceiling.Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Keris Arndt said a low pressure trough moved slowly through the south, triggering thunderstorms across Casey dumping between 10 to 30mm of rain and 60mm in Cardinia.

Narre Warren SES responded to 97 jobs in Casey.

Southbound lanes on Narre Warren North Road are closed at Princes Highway due to flooding.

A teacher's car was flooded at Berwick Lodge Primary School.

Narre Warren SES duty controller Damian Burns said one home in Cranbourne was soaked under one inch of flood water, destroying every room.

The house, he said, at the corner of Fairbairn Road and Sladen Street, was left in an “unliveable” state.

“Literally every room - the carpet was just soaked, so when you walk on it puddles of water welled up. The vinyl of the wooden floors was just lifting everywhere,” Mr Burns said.

I have seen many letters written recently from a handful of people representing the Casey Residents Association.

Who are they?

Those of us in the south have never heard of them.

At what was the final City of Casey Council meeting on Tuesday evening, when the mayor closed the meeting, one sole voice representing this association started accusing councillors - and those present in the council chambers clapped him out.

It was followed by three cheers for the councillors.

Those present in the council chambers that night were mainly representatives of community groups who have benefited from the representation of the elected councillors.

I wonder how many of the people who have criticised our councillors realise just how much they have sacrificed watching their children grow up, their children’s first kick in a footy game etc. because they have been putting the residents first and attending community events.

How many people in the city realise how much time is put into representing the residents?

This is not full-time employment - it is a role undertaken by residents who care about their community and want to help to provide a progressive city with limited funding.

Yes, that is correct - limited funding because the State Government sets a cap and regardless of the fact that the City of Casey is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, has to budget with the same rate increase as the smallest shire in Victoria with little expenditure.

Our councillors work tirelessly, and even with the IBAC investigation, who is to say the results have been detrimental to Casey?

I was brought up to believe that in Australia a person is innocent until proven guilty - but our councillors, even with nothing to answer have been proven guilty.

Going forward we are going to have an administrator until the elections in 2024.

I hope all of those who have opposed our councillors accept your destiny.

There will no longer be any representation for residents with an administrator in place.

We went through this when the cities of Cranbourne and Berwick merged as the City of Casey - we were lucky because we had a fantastic CEO in Mike Tyler who had his email turned on 24/7.

Council’s ‘error’ in allowing Aziz paid leave I believe Casey Council made a significant error of judgement in granting extended paid leave to former Casey mayor Cr Sam Aziz.

Council may have a legal opinion - one that has not been publicly disclosed - in support of extending leave for Aziz, but legal “opinions“ have no merit until they have been validated by a court.

celebrity crime author John Grisham said, some lawyers - street lawyers - fight for justice while other lawyers are selling themselves for money to the highest bidder.

In light of the compelling evidence emerging from the IBAC investigations, Cr Sam Aziz’s claim for extended paid leave should have been dealt with very differently by Casey Council and mayor Susan Serey.

The evidence provided by Aziz could have been made subject to further testing and any ratepayer allowances payable to Aziz placed on hold until he returns to Australia and the IBAC inquiry is concluded.

The mayor of Casey Susan Serey and her council have ignored the substantial and unequivocal evidence that has emerged from IBAC - exposing Cr Sam Aziz for corrupt behaviour by taking money from a wealthy property developer - and is now advocating for Sam Aziz on the basis of an unchallenged corporate legal opinion?

Fake first aider rips off collapse victim

By Brendan Rees A man who collapsed in a Cranbourne bank has been left gutted after being robbed by a person who at first appeared to offer help.

Benjamin Stannard, 31, had been sitting in the waiting area of the Commonwealth bank at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre about 10.30am on Wednesday 5 February when he began to feel unwell.

Moments later, Benjamin suffered an anxiety attack and collapsed on the floor before drifting in and out of consciousness.

Staff immediately called an ambulance while others came to his aid where, at which point a man seemingly came over to help.

“I remember sitting down and feeling a bit dodgy,” Benjamin recalled.

But it was only when Benjamin was on his way to Casey Hospital that he realised his phone, which contained cards and cash in a case, was missing.He said he couldn’t remember much at the bank but was later told by paramedics and bank staff that a man had been behaving suspiciously while he lay on the floor.

According to the witnesses, Benjamin said a man allegedly took his wallet and phone out of his pocket and handed the paramedics his I.D and “took off with the rest of it”.

“I vaguely remember it happening - they knew this particularly person had it,” Benjamin said.

“He was pretending to help ... and then he disappeared into the background”.

A man had his wallet stolen after he collapsed in a Cranbourne bank. enough, Benjamin called police to report the incident and later provided a statement.

He also spoke with bank staff who believed the man was a customer.

“I haven’t heard anything yet but I believe they’re gone to deal with it swiftly,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin had recently been through a lot, which he says may have contributed to his collapse.

“My father died on the same day my partner

left me two months ago, leaving me with my five-year-old son,” he said. “I’ve left work and been trying to get on Newstart since then”.

Benjamin was discharged after spending seven hours at Casey Hospital after experiencing an “overload” of carbon dioxide and unable control his muscles.

Ben described the man as chubby, tall, black or grey hair and balding on top, aged in his mid-40s, acne on his face, and wearing dark clothing.

Cranbourne Police are investigating.

Four teenagers have been arrested by police over alleged burglaries, a home invasion and affray in the South East.

The alleged incidents include a firearms incident and assault in Babylon Street, Clyde North and an affray at a Lyndhurst shopping centre on 9 February.

An aggravated home invasion, home invasion, attempted aggravated burglary and two attempted burglaries also occurred in Nolan Court, Sandhurst on 12 February, police say.

Southern Metro Region Crime Team detectives arrested two 16-year-olds and a 15-yearold male in Dandenong as well as a 19-yearold Cranbourne East man in Cranbourne East on 14 February.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with theft of motor vehicle, affray, attempted armed robbery, intentionally causing injury and committing indicatable offences while on bail.

He was remanded to appear at a children's court.

Pride and joy is trashed

By Brendan Rees A Clyde North man is gutted after his prized possession was stolen and destroyed when it lost control and struck a fence days later.

Father of two Matt Mitchell said he woke to find his car, a 2004 Commodore VY SS Series II, missing from the front of his Compton Way home about 4.14am on Monday 10 February.

The car had been locked and parked, he said, but it didn’t stop two bandits pulling up in what appeared to be a Ford Ranger, and smash a window while being filmed on CCTV footage at 2.05am.

“They rock up in utes, break a window, get in; roll it down the street,” Mr Mitchell said.

“They actually roll it down the road and go up on the footpath. The guy who is driving a ute gets out and helps him and pushes it down the road a bit further”.

Mr Mitchell said he was on his way to work when he had to take a “double look to make sure it actually was gone”.

The car, he said was rare and his pride and joy. The thieves also took off with his golf clubs and baby seat which were also in the Commodore.

“Not many of these cars around these days, it’s a bit of a loud SS too,” he said, adding he didn’t however hear a thing when it was stolen.

Mr Mitchell was now left further devastated and shaken as the car had been recovered in Hampton Park in what is believed to be a disrepair state.

Police swoop on vehicle crime and theft Police have carried out two raids in Cranbourne North, charging four people following a string of vehicle, theft and drug offences.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives, together with the Divisional Response Unit Fugitive Team executed a warrant at an address on Sabel Drive on Wednesday 12 February and recovered allegedly stolen property including a Honda Odyssey van, number plates, identification and credit cards.

An imitation firearm was also found, police say.

A 26-year-old man, who was allegedly hiding inside a bin at the address, was arrested at the scene.

Police arrest a man following raids in Cranbourne North.

He was charged with a range of offences including theft from motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, prohibited person possess imitation firearm and handle stolen goods, and was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 19 February.

Separate arrests were made by police Thursday 13 February in relation to alleged theft from motor vehicle, drug and property offences.

A warrant was executed at an address on Strzelecki Court, Cranbourne North, where allegedly stolen property including identification cards, power tools and a Yamaha motorcycle were located.

A quantity of GHB and a substance suspected to be methylamphetamine were also seized.

A 30-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were both arrested and charged with theft from motor vehicle, obtain property by deception, possess drug of dependence and handle stolen goods.

Both were remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court today.

A 25-year-old man was also arrested at the scene after allegedly being found with methylamphetamine and cannabis.

He was charged with possess drug of dependence and bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 March.

"I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said.

However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times.

"He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled.

During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant.

"We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me."

"Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said.

Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop.

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder.

He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime.

Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

“You don’t get it,” it read, going on to plead: “Please don’t come back in 2024.”

The sign was held by a Casey ratepayer outside Bunjil Place before Tuesday night’s final meeting of Casey Council for the foreseeable future.

Events inside the chamber suggested the message was on the money.

Councillors showed no sign of remorse and there was no hint of an apology in what turned out to be a tearful exercise in backslapping.

The overwhelming sentiment was that they had been harshly treated and didn’t deserve their fate.

The State Government had no choice but to sack the council.

Revelations coming out of the IBAC corruption inquiry into council conduct with developer John Woodman have been startling to say the least - and more will come when the inquiry resumes next month.

A municipal monitor was installed as that alarming evidence came to light and, sadly, it appears council is still falling well below the mark.

The monitor found a culture of bullying and intimidation within council ranks, an inability to manage conflicts of interest and holding each other to account and, in the wake of the IBAC inquiry, the councillors had prioritised protecting their own reputations over that of the council as a whole.

The Casey brand has been seriously damaged in the process. Staff have been told not to wear name badges outside the offices for fear of being abused.

It will take a long time and a lot of work to restore community confidence.

More shocking has been the ‘nothing to see here’ defence of the main players.

Speaking to Star News from Egypt this week, Cr Sam Aziz still maintains he and his council colleagues have been unfairly treated.

I would suggest to Cr Aziz that swapping suitcases full of cash with the city’s largest property developer is not normal behaviour. Nor is following the script of that same developer when framing motions about certain developments in the council chamber. Yes, Cr Aziz, there certainly is something to see here - and full credit goes to those who brought this behaviour to light.

Most in that room on Tuesday night have done some great work for the City of Casey over many years.

But a lot of questionable behaviour also went on during their watch.

The shenanigans exposed by the IBAC inquiry should have been shut down by a council doing its job.

It’s not good enough to point the finger at one or two bad eggs and wipe your hands clean of the mess.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells State Upper House MPs have failed in an 11th-hour push to reduce the time that Casey Council was without democratically-elected councillors.

On 18 February, the State Government rushed through its Bill to sack Casey councillors and install administrators until October 2024.

In its way was Clifford Hayes, of Sustainable Australia Party, who moved an amendment for Casey Council elections in October 2021.

“I’m not one for sacking councils but Casey Council should be sacked. Its credibility is totally shot,” Mr Hayes told Parliament.

However, Mr Hayes’s “proviso” was that elections were held as quickly as possible. It was “undemocratic” to keep administrators for “years and years without reason”.

Municipal Monitor Laurinda Gardner’s report found the council’s management and day-to-day functions were “operating to a high standard”, Mr Hayes said.

“The failures are isolated to councillors, some of whom have been completely corrupted by their pursuit of wealth.

“Why on Earth would we need almost five years of administration to rectify issues that are isolated to a group of councillors who are set to be sacked anyway?”

Mr Hayes reiterated his call for a ban on political donations from property developers “the very reason we are in this situation in the first place”.

A shorter administration period was supported by independent Catherine Cumming, Reason Party’s Fiona Patten as well as Greens, Derryn Hinch Justice and Liberal Democrat MPs.

Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said Casey needs a "lengthy break" from democratically-elected councillors.

Liberal MP Bruce Atkinson crossed the floor to support an alternative amendment from Dr Cumming for March 2023.

Mr Atkinson said it was “unfair” that councillors who discharged their duties properly were “tarred” by being part of a dismissed council.

“The fact is that this council, as I said, has been doing a job that has met the standards of any other council.”

He inferred that the “extraordinary” time without democratically-elected councillors may be linked to Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek recently “bragging” about the numbers of new Labor recruits in Casey.

Mr Somyurek decried the “absolutely outrageous” and “grubby tactic” by Mr Atkinson.

He said he’d moved to sack councillors with a “heavy heart”.

“When it comes to the matter of good people being sacked, absolutely my heart goes out to councillors that have been sacked, that have done nothing wrong.

“Their reputations have been tarnished. It is absolutely unfair; I get that.”

Mr Somyurek said he’d taken the “unorthodox” step of meeting Casey mayor Susan Serey and Crs Wayne Smith and Gary Rowe on 17 February at their request.

“They put up some good arguments as to why they should not be sacked.

“The only commitment I gave them was that I would pass on their arguments to the cabinet ... which I did.”

He said the trio were “good people”, describing Cr Serey as being a “very energetic, very smart mayor” with a “bright future”.

The Government believed a “lengthy break” was required to “embed good governance” and to restore public trust, he said.

Mr Somyurek left it open for elections to be held sooner than 2024.

“The Department will be in touch with the administrators on an ongoing basis.

“If we can get local democracy back sooner, that should be celebrated and we will do it.”

In supporting the Government, Upper House Opposition Leader David Davis said the Coalition preferred an earlier date, but 2021 was too soon given that IBAC’s inquiry was ongoing.

Making “multiple different dates and so forth on the run is probably not the way to go”, Mr Davis said.

“We believe that there should be a decent period where the council is out - 2023 or somewhere thereabouts would be a more sensible time in our view.”

Police use capsicum spray on wild teen Police used capsicum spray following a scuffle with a teen outside Bunjil Place - just minutes before sacked Casey Councillors attended their final meeting on Tuesday 18 February.

Police were called to Fountain Gate Shopping Centre about 4.45pm after reports two girls had damaged basins in the public toilets.

Senior constable Alistair Parsons said police located a girl fitting the description of one of the persons at Bunjil Place about 6pm.

“As they were talking to her a second teen attended and obstructed police,” Sen Cons Parsons said.

“Police attempted to arrest both teens and O/C spray was deployed,” he said.

Star News observed two police officers restraining one of the teens before pouring a bottle of water over the girl’s eyes after capsicum spray was used. Both the 15-year-old girls, from Cranbourne and Frankston, were taken into custody.

‘You couldn’t see any of this coming’

By Brendan Rees Former three-time Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon believes the dismissal of Casey councillors could have been handled “a little differently”.

It comes after a bill was passed in State Parliament on Tuesday 18 February dismissing Council councillors, who will be replaced by an interim administrator within days.

“I believe we are a good council; we have worked very, very hard,” Cr Stapledon said.

“We’ve had our ear out to the community and then taken it back to council to get a good outcome.

“I believe we could’ve easily continued on as a council and the individual dismissals as they were appropriate”.

“I believe we could’ve dealt with this a little differently and had a better outcome for the community,” she said.

“I just think it’s a shame,” she told Star News, after a municipal monitor - appointed by the State Government - presented a report which found clear evidence the council failed to provide good governance to the City of Casey and recommended its dismissal.

“You couldn’t see any of this coming. It’s terribly sad,” she said, declining to comment about the allegations presented at an anti-corruption commission inquiry.

Cr Stapledon said there was “overwhelming support from the community for us to stay” but accepted “where things are at now” and thanked the community for their great support.

“I’ve felt so privileged or grateful for the opportunity; I’ve loved every minute of it, have no regrets, the only regret I have is in this way,” she said.

Cr Stapledon declined to comment publicly

as to whether she would put her hand up as a councillor when the next councillor elections are held in 2024.

When asked whether council left behind a positive legacy, she said: “I’ll allow the community to be the judge of that”.

In a Facebook message, Cr Stapledon stated she felt “a great sense of gratitude for the very privileged opportunity I have been given to serve the Mayfield Ward and the City of Casey more broadly”.

“The Casey community have been the eyes and ears and have told me what it is that is needed in the community and it has been my honour to have represented them/you in any way that I could,” she posted.

COUNCIL DUMPED

No remorse, no apology

By Brendan Rees They choked back tears and patted each other on the back as they bid farewell for the final time - but there wasn’t a moment of remorse or apology, drawing the ire of ratepayers.

Casey Councillors gathered with downcast faces as they sat in the council chambers for their final public meeting on Tuesday 18 February - just hours after the State Government passed laws to sacking each one of them.

Police were in attendance patrolling Bunjil Place, while outside, Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) member Brendan Browne held a sign above his head which read: “They just don’t get it! Please don’t come back in 2024”.

In front of the packed public gallery, Casey mayor Susan Serey spoke of council’s achievements but maintained there was “no concrete evidence of underperformers”.

“I’m the youngest mayor to serve the City of Casey and as a councillor for the past seven years I would like to thank the Edrington Ward for their continued confidence in me. I’m deeply honoured to have served our amazing community,” Cr Serey said, fighting back tears.

“I wanted to thank Casey’s community, organisations, businesses and volunteers for their timeless work in our community”.

Casey deputy mayor Gary Rowe described the monitor’s report - which found clear evidence of significant governance failures at the council - as “bland” and “none of them qualified jumping the barrier for dismissal of council”.

A resident from the gallery hurled abuse as Cr Rowe finished his speech, shouting: “It’s a bit late”.

“Have some respect!” a woman shouted back.

Cr Amanda Stapledon reflected on her time with council “with a great sense of gratitude” “It is with great sadness that we are no longer going to be councillors,” the former threetime Casey mayor said.

Cr Rosalie Crestani thanked her family, fellow councillors and council officers, and the community “for their unbending support and faith” before reading from the Bible.

Embattled sacked councillor Geoff Ablett, a former Hawthorn premiership player, said it had been a “very frustrating and an emotional and draining time for me” but thanked the galley for their “good behaviour“ in allowing him to speak.

“Nothing would’ve in my mind resulted in the actions that were taken today,” Cr Ablett said, who is one of the key figures in the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission inquiry.

“It’s not easy being in a public interviewing situation ... I’ve cooperated fully as other councillors who are yet to come, will as well,” he said.

“Nothing deserved the outcome that we got to today”.

Cr Damien Rosario addressed the crowd from a podium saying he didn’t wish to resign because he wanted to stay “until the end“ to “honour my oath” in serving the city.

“I choose to do that. We choose to do that.

That’s why these people are still here - not because we want to hold onto the title of councillor for as long as we can, that is meaningless to us,” Cr Rosario said.

“We will stay until the end to serve you,” he told the gallery.

To conclude, Cr Wayne Smith listed his achievements, saying his was “very proud and honoured” to serve with council during his near 30-year term.

His speech was interrupted by a discontent resident who shouted: “You haven’t done you job!”

Part of the gallery gave a standing ovation before erupting into three cheers while others shouted out the shortcomings of councillors.

Rex Flannery, who resigned as councillor days earlier, was present in the gallery, saying after the meeting “the people have spoken”.

“Has council affected me? Have I been tarnished? Doesn’t bother me,” he said, adding he hoped to be able to put his hand up as councillor in four years.

“They just don’t get that they haven’t done their job. The monitor’s report spells it out,” Mr Browne said.

He added: “They don’t hold each other to account”.

Former Casey mayor Rob Wilson said the

dismissal was “something that had to happen” and took aim at councillors for showing no “hint of remorse or apology”.

“There were no expressions of contriteness, no sorry, no admission of guilt: ’We’re sorry that we didn’t notice things happen and get things cleaned up’,” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson did however acknowledge the achievements of councillors and Cr Stapledon who supported him in launching his two books.

Little dolls a big comfort

By Danielle Kutchel Crafty residents of Aveo Botanic Gardens Retirement Village have put their needles together for a good cause, knitting almost 100 dolls for people affected by the summer's horrific bushfire season.

After hearing about those who have lost everything in the fires, residents of the village decided to do what they could with the skills they possessed.

About 15 residents came together every Thursday in January with plans to knit 100 comfort dolls to send to the disaster zone, feeling that there would be a need for them later on after the fires, especially for children.

To date, they've completed 85 of the comfort-giving items, which are now on their way to the fire-affected zone.

Comfort dolls, also known as trauma dolls, are widely used in hospitals and other situations where children face negative situations - but group member Pamela Hook said anyone could benefit from a doll as they are designed for whoever needs them.

Each comfort doll knitted by the group is unique with every knitter putting their own character into it.

Ms Hook said the group was motivated by a desire to respond in any way they could to the inferno.

"It gives us a sense of making a contribution and I think that's what galvanised people because they couldn't give a lot of money but they could give their time and skill. It gave everyone a sense of pride," she said.

Ms Hook said the group hoped to keep the project going and was happy to act as a dropoff point for anyone in the community who would also like to contribute their own knitted creations.

"It doesn't take long to knit the doll. We have a contact with Vinnies who is helping to distribute the dolls, so getting the dolls to the right people is easy to do."

Darrin Bayliss-White, community manager at Aveo Botanic Gardens, said he was proud of the knitting group's efforts.

Ms Hook agreed.

"The little things, when you think about it, do make a difference and that's all we're trying to do.

"We can never understand what they're going through but we're doing our best to empathise with their loss and we'll do whatever we can to support them."

Romance stamped on many in the letters centre of love

By Danielle Kutchel Love is in the air at Australia Post's Dandenong Letters Centre - and not just on Valentine's Day, but every day.

There are around 25 married couples working together in the facility, with 13 of them having met while working for Australia Post or at the facility.

Of the couples, 10 wives work in the video coding department while their husbands work in other departments, and six couples work on the same 6am shift.

Romance blossomed early for Niki and Francois Leclair, who first met when she did work experience at Australia Post as a 16-yearold.

At the time, she bragged to her friends about how good-looking he was.

She returned in a full-time capacity five years later, and Francois remembered her.

"We met at the clock cards again - I was

clocking out, he was clocking in, and it kicked off from there!" she laughs.

"He said, 'we have to catch up and do something, definitely, definitely, definitely', and we have not looked back since!"

They've now been together for 20 years and married for 14. It's almost a family tradition: Niki's parents also worked together at Australia Post.

For nearly 18 years Niki worked the night shift, so the couple only got to see each other for a few hours a day.

"It was 22 hours apart, and I missed my husband all the time," she says.

Now they work the same shift, which Niki says works well for their relationship.

"It's not only given us a great job and a good life, but also a lifetime partner. Each day I'm happier than the one before," she says.

Asked what the secret to a happy marriage is, they say in unison: "communication and trust".

Jessica’s green-thumb talent blooms

By Danielle Kutchel A Cranbourne resident has been "humbled" to receive a prestigious, state-wide honour for her dedication to learning and her profession.

Jessica Scott-Smith was announced as the Apprentice of the Year at the 2019 Apprenticeship Employment Network (AEN) and Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) Australia Awards in late 2019.

She also picked up the Inspiration Award: Women in Trades.Fifty per cent of the individual award winners this year were women, marking a shift in the composition of traineeships and apprenticeships in Victoria.

Workforce Ltd, after completing her studies in horticulture at Swinburne.

She said she had always loved the environment and conservation, passions which drew her into horticulture.

"Working outside and in beautiful places is a bonus!" she said.

Over the past few years she has undertaken revegetation projects and important weed and pest management work.

Ms Scott-Smith now has a Certificate III in horticulture as well as traffic management, chemical and machinery qualifications, and her HR truck licence.

Three months out from the end of her apprenticeship, she hasn't quite made up her mind on a particular area of focus for her career.

"I want to continue learning. My ultimate goal is to start up, build or promote either a new or current project that fosters and encourages relationships between people and environment. I would love the opportunity to one day manage green spaces, where I can implement my ideas and showcase my creativity and passion for plants and trees."

The awards are further encouragement for the budding horticulturalist, and motivation to continue working hard.

Ms Scott-Smith also hopes that other female apprentices can take something from her experience.

"Follow your passion and support each other," she urged."

A rich vein of experience

Cranbourne East and Clyde North are among the top 10 solar savvy suburbs in Melbourne.

This is according to the State Government Solar Homes program - with more than 71,700 successful applications from Victorians for rebated solar panels, solar batteries and solar hot water systems.

Minister for Solar Homes Lily D’Ambrosio met a resident living in a unit managed by SouthEast Housing Cooperative in Cranbourne, who is already saving significantly on her power bills through rooftop solar.

Community housing residents with solar systems on their roofs receive 100 per cent of the power bill savings created by the panels ensuring the energy cost savings available under Solar Homes reach those who need it most.

The not-for-profit housing providers receive the rebate and pass on the bill savings to their tenants. More than 61,700 solar systems have now been installed and $124.6 million in solar rebates have been paid out, with 41 per cent of solar applications from households across rural and regional Victoria.

Ken and Lyn Loveless, a retired couple who

live at the Lifestyle Community Village at Skylark Boulevard in Clyde North, decided to sign up to the Solar Homes rebate after feeling the cost-of-living impacts, saying it was a way “you can save money and help balance the budget and at the same time”.

“We have to budget and we have to be careful with our money and this is a good way of saving money. I would recommend that everybody - no matter what your salary or what you’re earning capacity is, that you seriously consider this,” Mr Loveless said.

Solar Homes is reducing energy bills for families who need it most, with 69 per cent of solar rebates going to households with incomes of less than $105,000, and at least 10 per cent to those earning less than $16,000 a year.

The State Government has also delivered 191 solar systems directly to community housing organisations.

When completed, Solar Homes will have created 5,500 jobs and reduced the State’s carbon emissions by almost 4 million tonnes - the equivalent of taking one million cars off the road.

Tip operator cops EPA fine Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined Suez Recycling and Recovery $8000 for breaching a licence condition at its Hallam Road, Hampton Park landfill that it must prevent offsite odours.

EPA Southern Metropolitan Acting Manager Megan Vallas said EPA officers inspected the site in September last year following a large increase in odour reports from the public to ensure the operation of the landfill was compliant with the requirements of its EPA licence.

“Thanks to timely, descriptive pollution reports from the public, EPA was able to confirm landfill gas odour in residential areas consistent with that emitted by the Hampton Park Landfill,” Ms Vallas said.

Suez Recycling and Recovery has since installed additional infrastructure to better manage landfill gas. EPA will continue to monitor the site to determine the effectiveness of these controls and to ensure Suez Recycling and Recovery meets its ongoing licence obligations.

By Brendan Rees A taste of the Netherlands is set to return to Akoonah Park, Berwick on Saturday 7 March.

The Holland Festival is expected to attract hundreds of people where people of Dutch origins or those with an interest in the Dutch culture can enjoy a great day out with food vendors, stall holders, exhibitions, and of course clog dancing workshops on offer.

Supported by the Rotary Club of Casey, the family-fun event includes performances and displays from artists as well as face painting, pony rides, a fun Dutch 'shuffle-board game' for people of all ages, and a petting zoo.

New attractions include a tour of the Netherlands through a virtual reality experience as well as a chance to dress up in your favourite

Dutch costume to receive a free printed photo.

The festival is also dog friendly with canine fashionistas encouraged to put their best paw forward in a Dutch costume for the 'Best dressed Pooch Parade'.

A bar and continuous live entertainment will run from 10.30am until 6pm. There will be bands, choirs, singers and more performing in both Dutch and English.

More than 30 food vendors will offer a variety of food including olliebollen (Dutch Donuts), frikandel (Dutch Sausages), Stroopwafers (Syrup wafers), and Kibbeling (fish bites).

Every cent of profit on the day goes to charity through the Rotary Club of Casey.

Casey residents are gearing up to take part in a charity walk at Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens on Saturday 22 February for a worthy cause.

The annual walk, hosted by the Jared Dunscombe Fund, is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013.

Mr Dunscombe died when he fell from his bike and was struck by a truck and trailer travelling in the same direction while taking part in the Rotary fund-raising event - 'Ride to Conference'.

This year, funds will be raised Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, who provide medical treatment for children from developing countries in the form of life giving and/or dignity restoring surgery.

To help raise the much needed funds, a five-kilometre fundraiser walk will be held at Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens to help pay for the flight of a young child to Australia for heart surgery.

In 2014, the Jared Dunscombe Fund raised funds to bring seven-year-old Aze Da Cunha from East Timor to Australia for life-saving heart surgery, which was not available to him in his home country.

The surgery at Monash Medical Centre was successful and the young boy has since returned home and is living a healthy and active life.

The Dunscombe family had hosted Aze and his father in their home during their stay in 2014.

"It's difficult to imagine being a parent who is watching their child dying from a heart condition and not having the means to help them.

Rotary Club of Cranbourne will be providing a barbecue breakfast at the end of the walk.

Berwick Artist Society The first demonstration for the year is on Wednesday 26 February. The demonstrator is Angelo Quabba, a well-known Victorian artist.

Angelo's paintings are impressionistic. He loves to paint what he sees and invites the viewer into the painting. Angelo has held 21 solo exhibitions and he has won many awards. He will be using oils as the medium.

Twilight Car Boot Sale

Dees’ rooms kicking goals Melbourne’s AFLW team is off to the perfect start for this footy season, with the opening of their new $8 million changerooms at Casey Fields.

Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards officially opened the high quality AFLW changerooms, the first of several upgrades at the ground set to benefit female footballers from grassroots to the elite level. The new changerooms at Casey Fields, which received $5 million in funding from the State Government, feature personalised lockers, aquatic recovery pool, team address room, warm up space and a massage area.

A new canteen has also been installed so supporters can have a more enjoyable experience as they watch the Demons play.

Opening later this year will be a new state of the art gymnasium and indoor training facility at Casey Fields to complement the new changerooms. These improvements will provide the perfect base for the Demons to train and host the big games. Grassroots clubs in the southeast and beyond will also benefit through development programs run at Casey Fields by the Melbourne Football Club.

The project forms part of the State Government’s $45 million investment in AFLW to support the current crop of AFLW stars and generations to follow.

Casey Council contributed $2.5 million to the project while $500,000 was received from the AFL. “We’re so proud to play our part in levelling the playing field and in making sure women in sport get the very best facilities to excel at the top level,” Ms Richards said.

Melbourne Demons chief executive Gary Pert said: “The facilities will not only benefit our AFLW and VFLW programs but will be made available for community sport, which is great news for the local residents of Casey”.

The Government also thanked the City of Casey and AFL for their contributions to the Casey Fields works.

400 up for Tigers great

By Nick Creely Even after 400 senior games for the Beaconsfield Cricket Club, Alan Sauvarin still turns up in his cricket gear each and every week for one simple reason.

“If I didn’t like the place, I wouldn’t be there,” he said.

“I just love the game.”

From humble beginnings since walking through the door of the club in 1983/84, Sauvarin reached a significant milestone - and the first in club history - to reach 400 games of cricket in Dandenong District Cricket Assocation’s D Grade competition against St Mary’s on 8 February.

And he even hit the winning runs - pushing the ball into the covers - in a dominant Tigers win at Holm Park Reserve.

“Gidge Campbell, an old friend who I’ve played with and against over the years, tossed the coin and he called correctly and they batted,” he said of the day.

“They batted slow which wasn’t too bad, then Rick Cashman - a St Mary’s legend - he’s come out to bat, and he’s got my gloves, my pads, my bat, and all my gear on, and he said ‘I’ve raided your bag Al’.

“He made 50, whinged about the bat until he tonked one over the fence, and then it was our turn to bat, and the captain asked me where I wanted to bat.

“I had a sash made up to bat in but it was so windy - the boys got off to a good start and we’d only lost one wicket and I wasn’t going to get a hit batting at four.

“Craig Hocking retired and Wayne Holden and I scratched around, and he was trying to get me the winning runs and I got to the end and pushed a single and we won.”

Just days earlier, the club celebrated Sauvarin’s achievement at the club, with many past players, and ‘friends’ returning to the clubrooms to have a drink, reminiscence and share stories over his long and illustrious journey at the club.

“There was a hell of a lot of people that came back for the night, a lot of ex-players and people that come back to wish me well,” he said.

“I won’t say I was emotional, but I was chuffed that these people have come back - it wasn’t like I’ve been the best cricketer, I’ve just been there a long time, and they’ve come and gone, and I’m still there.

“It was just fantastic - that Thursday night was so good because so many friends I’d played with came back to say well done.”

In actual fact, Sauvarin has played well in excess of 400 games when considering his involvement in veterans cricket and juniors.

Starting out his journey in juniors in Leongatha for the Imperials Cricket Club, Sauvarin also played for Washington Park in the SECA before venturing out to Beaconsfield through a friend after moving to his house in Narre Warren in 1983.

It was home, and it stuck.

“A friend was playing football at Beaconsfield, and he suggested for me to go play cricket there,” he said.

“I’d had a few sleeps at the rooms before I’d made a cricket comeback, and stayed there ever since.”

From his first game - where only one teammate knew how to get to the ground - to hitting the winning runs 399 matches later, it’s been some journey at the club.

“We were going to play at Rythdale, which is now Cardinia, and the only one who knew how to get to the ground was Brian Parkes, so we made him captain before he left and then followed him to the ground,” he said of his first game.

“I don’t remember much after that, but it was my introduction. I’ve played with good people over the years - every club probably does have those people, and I’ve had a few falling outs over my time, but I just keep coming back.”

Aside from the club life member also serving numerous roles as secretary, junior coach, junior coach, Sauvarin has accumulated over 4000 runs, almost 200 wickets, and one special premiership with his teammates in the 1990s, one he still remembers vividly.

“We won the toss and bowled, played the Yabbies and bowled them out for under 70,” he said.

“We passed them two down at the end of the day, and they decided not to come back, so we beat them at 5pm on the first day.

“That season I got into this team - I was batting low, and was hardly getting a bowl, but I had an inkling this could be the year.

“I zipped my lip and enjoyed the ride.”

Despite managing to score a ton of runs, Sauvarin described himself as just a modest cricketer, but one that plays for the love of the game, the camaraderie, and for fielding.

“That’s just through the weight of games, it’s only an average of about 11 - but I’ll take that,” he said.

“I got as high as the twos, but I’ve played mainly in the lower grades.

“I actually really enjoy fielding, and I’m not very good at it, but I just love it when a wicket gets taken, and when someone takes a catch, but it’s better when I take them.”

Great mates Wayne Hocking and Alan Sauvarin shared a massive partnership in Beaconsfield's F Grade game in 2015.

So what was Sauvarin’s favourite individual moment from 400 senior games for the club?

“My first and only hundred (against Lynbrook in 2015 in F Grade),” he said with a chuckle.

“Wayne Hocking made one on the same day, we put on a big partnership, and he talked me through most of it.

“I got tired, I got cramp, and I was just trying to hit across the line, and he kept saying ‘keep your head down’.

“No disrespect to Lynbrook, they didn’t have a great bowling side, and I thought ‘I’ve waited 350 games for a bowling attack like this’, and we made 350, and ended up winning the game which was good.”

But another magic moment, this time with the ball, came in a close second.

“I took 7/16 against Nyora in 1992 - I came on, it was after 5pm, and turned the game from ninth change,” he said.

“I remember that game because I was just dawdling along, and I think I got seven wickets off about four overs.

“We ended up winning outright, and it got

us into the finals that year.”

While Sauvarin still adores the game as much as he did in 1983 when he first rocked up to the club - and even plays veterans cricket these days too - he understands that he won’t be able to play forever.

“I’m playing over 60s for Endeavour Hills and I’m enjoying that because you don’t have these mad quicks - you’ve just got cagy old buggers bowling them on the spot,” he said.

It’s like cricket in slow motion, but I don’t think I’ve got too many more years of Saturday and Sunday cricket - but I’ve played lots of games.

But he does believe someone at Beaconsfield will come along and knock off his record in the near future.

“Someone will come along and break it,” he said.

“There are a few guys that are 50 or so games behind, so there’s not too many more left in me now. I’m getting old and breaking down.

“And there could be a kid that comes to the club and stays 30 or 40 years and can get there.”

Prominent Cranbourne trainer hit with nine charges Cranbourne trainer Mark Sues is to face a series of charges relating to failing to provide sufficient nutrition or proper veterinary treatment to horses in his care.

On Monday 17 February, Racing Victoria stewards issued nine charges (four in the alternative) under Australian Racing Rules 231.

The charges issued against Sues will be heard before the Victorian Racing Tribunal on a date to be fixed.

AR 231(1)(b)(iv) provides that a person must not, if that person is in charge of a horse, fail at any time to provide proper and sufficient nutrition for that horse.

AR 231 (1)(b)(iii) provides that a person must not, if that person is in charge of a horse, fail at any time to provide veterinary treatment to that horse where such treatment is necessary for the horse.

RV stewards have notified trainer Bill Cerchi of the detection of a prohibited substance in a blood sample taken from one of his horses Backstreet Alley.

RASL reported that the blood sample was shown to contain Fursemide (a diuretic), which is a prohibited substance when detected in a sample taken on race day. Stewards are continuing with their investigation.

Demons’ dream start

The Dees put on a clinic at Whitten Oval in front of a vocal crowd, winning 4.8 (32) to 2.0 (12).

Chantel Emonson got the ball rolling for the Dees, nailing the first major of the match only minutes in.

Relentless pressure from the Melbourne outfit directly led to its second major on the board.

Leading by nine at the first interval, the game went into lockdown; a slippery affair took place as only three points were added to the score, all from the boots of Melbourne players.

The third term saw the Dees skip away to a match-defining lead, Casey Sherriff slotted her first career major, showing she wasn’t fooled by the wet conditions, slamming it off the deck through the big sticks.

Maddi Gray immediately added another, converting her set shot from close range to push the Demons 26 points ahead.

The Dogs were the only side to add a major in the final term, but it was far too late as the Demons secured their second win from as many matches.

Despite the emphatic victory, the night was soured by the devastating knee injury to Ainslee Kemp, her third ACL injury, but her first in her left knee.

The Demons take on St Kilda under lights again this Friday night, looking to make it three from three.

Some of the great football and netball characters of the Yarra Valley and south east are set to once again come together for a wonderful cause with the Valley Vicious Rett Awareness Cup back for another year and set to be even more entertaining.

On a night dedicated to banding together as a community with the purpose of fighting and raising funds for the devastating disease that is Rett Syndrome, Lee Lawrence is once again hoping for crowds to make their way out and support the cause, which will be held on Saturday 29 February at Healesville Sporting Complex.

“Last year we ended up raising around $20,000, and this year we’re aiming higher, about $50,000, and that is achievable,” Lee told the Star News.

“Off the jump we’ve raised around $18,000, and I think we’ll do it, but we’ll see how we go.

“We’re just praying on good weather.”

Lee runs the popular Facebook page ‘Valley Vicious Footy and Netball Banter’, which he started when his daughter, Gypsy was diagnosed with Rett - a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females and with a prevalence of one in about 15,000 females - all with the aim of raising awareness and raising funds to find a cure.

Infants and children with the disorder cease to acquire new skills and gradually lose previously acquired abilities, such as control of the hands and the ability to vocalize most sounds and words.

Lee said while the disease is cruel and debilitating, Gypsy has never dropped her spirit and continues to smile no matter the circumstances.

“She’s been going really well - we do have to help her quite a lot with her eating now, but that’s really the only noticeable thing of late,” he said.

“She’s just always happy, and she’s started school this year which is awesome.

“So she’s doing three days up at Kinglake and two days down at Mount Evelyn Special School. It knocks her around a little, but she’s going really, really well.”

Lee said that Rett Syndrome Australia is doing everything it can to cure the disorder, and is confident that will one day become a reality.

“From what we hear, they’re very positive, they do believe that it’ll be one of the brain disorders that’ll be cured,” he said.

“They’re grateful of what we give them, and they’ve assured me they will find a cure one day.”

The Facebook page has since attracted a cult following in the Valley, and next Saturday’s event is set to be a monster day of sport, with a large crowd set to be treated to some excellent football and netball action.

With the gates opening at 12pm, the All-Star netball clash will kick off at 2pm, before the Valley Vicious ladies games featuring all-stars from around the Valley against the Healesville ladies premiership team bounces the ball at 2.30pm. During half-time of the ladies game, there will be an Auskick game on the oval, as well as a range of activities for kids and adults across the game.

The night’s main event, the Valley Vicious All Stars versus the Valley Vicious Vets All Stars, will close out the day, with a range of speakers, including a band post-game, set to entertain the crowd.

There will be a ‘Big Splash to Beat Rett’ as well as a Valley Vicious Electrics Super Booth competition that is sure to also keep fans engaged on the day.

Lee said the introduction of the ladies game this season - as well as the football and netball matches was simply something that had to be done this time around.

“Adding the girls’ game is pretty much a nobrainer,” he said.

“Girls footy has kicked off massively, and adding the girls have been fantastic.

“We’ve got all these group chats with all the teams and the energy the girls show and the way they promote has been fantastic.”

Officer is one south-east club once again heavily involved in the event, and president Nick McLennan urged everyone in the community to get involved and to join in the fight against Rett.

“What Lee and the team at Valley Vicious are doing is amazing. They’ve managed to bring an entire sporting community together over a single cause,“ he said.

“On the surface their Facebook page is a bit of fun, they’ve used humour to build their audience whilst subtly educating them about Rett Syndrome. It’s genius.

“Over the journey to date Lee has been able to raise tens of thousands of dollars, I take my hat of to him. As a club we’re just happy to be involved and we’re happy to play our part in assisting Lee to raise awareness and much needed funds to help fight Rett Syndrome.

Division 6 (a side) returned to the winners' circle with a win, also at Fountain Gate against Burden Park. Jeanette Cox, Pam Uren and Judy Naughton won well 22-11, while Truus Henneman, Nancy Pugh and Enid Gibb just missed out (20-22).

Narre Warren (3) 12-42 defeated Burden Park (2) 2-33.

Saturday was another mixed day for Narre Warren with a big win, two losses and a walkover.

Division 3 continued its strong form with a 48-shot win over Chelsea at Fountain Gate.

Geoff Ampt, Phil Howard,Wilma Stevenson and Zak Storm had another huge 30-plus shot win (37-5). Graham Dodd, Michael Graham, Mark Groom and Cam Lee won well (24-15) and Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Colin Groom and Jim Millar (19-14) and Reg Young, Joe Selfridge, Jim Kempf and Percy Herath (1917) both had wins.

Narre Warren (1) 18-99 defeated Chelsea (1) 0-51.

Division 4 did its finals chances no favours with a bad loss at Cranbourne. Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, David Wilkinson and Carl Lapham were closest, going down 20-22. Les Clement, Joe McGuire, Michael Toole and Norm Hosmer (15-26), Arthur Scheurer, Zade Bulmer, Peter Lister and Geoff Miller (11-24) and Luka Klarica, Brian Nicholls, Peter Groom and Ralph Devonhire (6-28) all lost.

Narre Warren (2) 0-52 lost to Cranbourne (3) 18-100.

Division 5 was also away at Pakenham. Stan Bulmer, Truus Henneman, Peter Castricum, and Sue Ellery were the only winning rink (2620) while Janice Moran, Paul McNamara, Gary Wilson and Reg Johnstone just missed out, going down 18-20. Alan Mark, Leo McGeary, Ernesto Vergara and Glen Cadman went down 14-18 and Darren Moore, Paulins Kempf, Dermor McConville and Craig Moore went down 21-30.

Russell Waters was right at home for Cranbourne.

Division 7 was given a walkover by Keysborough.

The Eagles are on a serious rise after clinching T20 title

By Tyler Lewis A piece of silverware has returned to Sydney Pargeter Reserve after Endeavour Hills took out the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association's Twilight Twenty20 competition on Sunday.

After a difficult couple of years, the Eagles have tasted the success they've been deprived of recently.

In both the semi-final and final, the Eagles defended a score of less than a run a ball 9/104 in the semi and 7/102 in the final against Coburg.

Eagles president Gary Parsons was over the moon on behalf of his club's success on Sunday, saying it capped off a brilliant weekend for the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club.

"It is sensational, we had four from four the other day to start it off," he said.

"Five from five in the T20s, it was always in the way we batted, once we got to 100 runs we knew could defend it.

"We had a couple close games, but the boys brought home the bacon which was really good."

Endeavour Hills had plenty to smile about when it secured a well earned victory in the VSDCA twenty-20 competition final.

"I think it was more the success in the early, preliminary Twenty20s that helped us out on the weekends," he said.

"The initial couple of games, we were poor in the field, we dropped a lot of catches. Slowly but surely, the boys changed on Saturday's and got a couple of good wins, which was good and they have carried it forward, which has been great.

"Now that they have had the taste, the im-

portant thing is to win the last two games of the year that puts us in and around middle of the range, which is much better than we have been the last couple of years, where we have been the cellar dweller at the bottom."

While it has been a huge achievement for a club that has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, the title in the limited overs fixture isn't one Parsons expected it to bring home in the lead-up to the 2019/20 season.

"Being competitive was the first part with our Saturday cricket," he said.

"The Twenty20 has been an absolute bonus, the blokes tended to gel a lot in the field and go through more professionally than what they have done on the Saturday.

"I always like to have 120 on the board, but in the end 102 was enough."
