Dorothy’s century MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Ballarat North celebrated Dorothy Donaldson’s 100th birthday at its general meeting held at the Ballarat Golf Club in November.

Dorothy was born on 8 November 1919 and joined the club on 25 June 2003.

At the 27 November meeting 75 of the 97 members attended.

Dorothy cut a birthday cake made by fellow member Margaret Broadbent, who joined the club on 13 September 2000 the year it was formed.

Members sang Happy Birthday to Dorothy and presented her with flowers and a card made especially by fellow member Irena Novak.

Dorothy cut the cake and made a nice speech thanking members for their friendship over many years.

A bottle of Andrew Peace wine labelled “Dorothy” was gifted to Dorothy by vicepresident Leon Sherwood.

Happy 100th Joy WARRING Heidelberg Probus Club celebrated the 100th birthday of foundation member Joy Mead late last year. The presentation was made by Betty Bowen, whom was the first president of the club.

Set for a day at the races THE Annual Friendship Day at Pakenham Racecourse is happening again.

Put Monday 15 June in the social calendar at Racing.com Park, 120 Nar Nar Goon-Longwarry Road, Tynong from 12.30pm to 5.30pm.

What fun we all usually have and the dressing up is amazing.

We are looking forward to seeing just what members will come up with for 2020 and the judging becomes more challenging each time.

For those who enjoy a bet on the horses, that is well catered for as well, although for anyone who feels that is not their interest, no worries, we always have so much fun and there are many distractions.

There are prizes given every now and then throughout the day, as well as the expected prizes for best dressed lady, best dressed gentleman and best dressed couple.

Probably the most important aspect is the ongoing Fun, Friendship and Fellowship which is the mission of Probus.

As always it is important to make your club’s booking as soon as possible as this is a most popular event and there is a limit of 400.

Please note that there will not be a Friendship Day held at Mornington this year as a result of an enormous price increase there, which may mean that we could expect even more in attendance at Pakenham. The food is delicious and the meal (senior size) is two course and then we are served afternoon tea.

Each year this day becomes more exciting and with the success of last year we have something to anticipate. A beautiful sunny day did help and that is ordered once more of course, but despite the weather doing what it wants, we won’t be stopped having the best time yet.

New PAV committee ON 26 November the Probus Association of Victoria held its annual general meeting at the Mulgrave Country Club.

Delegates were pleased to hear that after 35 years the association would still continue following the induction of a new enthusiastic committee!

Rennus Crossley I would like to start by saying a Happy New Year to you all but with such devastating bushfires, which I am sure have touched each one of us in some way, I think that inappropriate.

So I will say that I trust that we will all feel sympathy for all who have lost loved ones, homes, possessions and animals and that we will all chip in and do what we can to make life happy once again for them.

We welcome our new committee members: Anne Vick as vice-president, Jane Johnson as secretary, Dale King as treasurer, Janet Long and Therese Robinson.

Brenda Rose, Valerie Dawson, Joan Vogels OAM, myself and Rodney James are continuing. Rodney has kindly offered to be a helping hand.

We have done some investigation to see if it would work to have our May delegates meeting on the other side of the city. We are also in the process of seeing if we can find a more suitable meeting room nearer a station for our quarterly meetings but the February meeting will still be at Mulgrave Country Club.

I just have to tell you about the amazing adventure Trade Travel gave us in October as we did the Golden Triangle tour of India.

by Sue Grady and Glen O’Brien, who chose an excellent Indian, Shyam, to look after us and show and explain to us the marvels of India.

Shyam chose the very best of coach drivers for us. So as a consequence even with an average age of 82 the 23 of us arrived home without getting any food sickness.

We started with a rickshaw ride, saw the biggest traffic jam one could imagine, had a terrifying camel cart ride, exciting hair raising Tuk Tuk rides, marvelled at the beauty of the Taj Mahal especially seeing it in different lights, saw a Tigress at very

close range from the open topped jeep as well as many absolutely magnificent palaces where no cost was spared on the decorations which was such a contrast to the filthy streets with animals everywhere.

To finish off the trip we were taken to a Bollywood show.

So my recommendation is that if you want a really memorable holiday you take advantage of what Trade Travel has to offer.

The city is a treasure trove for shoppers with a wide range of handicrafts, textiles, precious and semi-precious stones including diamonds and the local “Kundan� style jewellery not found anywhere else in

the world. A day trip to a rural village and the 475-year-old Samode palace will be a huge contrast to the busy bustling cities.

However, this tour will visit Southern India (a first for Trade Travel) where we can reminisce in the English Colonial past and soak up the French and Portuguese influences from days gone by.

We fly to Cochin the principal port for southwestern India. This city has been a trading post for centuries and the Portuguese, Dutch and British influences remain evident. For a change of pace, we board a house boat at Alleppey before overnighting at the Coconut Lagoon Resort.

We will soak up the sights of Thekkady renowned for its rainforests, wildlife and

spice plantations and enjoy a boat safari on the Periyar Lake. Heading to Chettinad we visit sights along the way. This historical town with a myriad of tourist pleasures is one of the prominent attractions of South India due to its delicious cuisine, unique architecture and rich art and cultural heritage. It is something of a world apart and a truly unique destination.

A drive to Pondicherry, a former French colony until 1956 and very much like a French town with patisseries and cobbled pathways is also included. Enroute we engage in small activities like pottery making and stroll around the village. Other sights include the Botanical gardens, Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus,

Pondicherry Museum and the French Institute of Ideology.

These are just some of the highlights of this once in a lifetime holiday to this special part of the world. Sue and I loved taking a group of Probians on last year’s tour. 21 of the 23 people on tour were women and the average age was just 82!

And believe me they had a blast like no other and all of them would attest to that.

A real buzz of excitement MORDIALLOC Sports Club was a buzz of excitement on 4 December as 80 members gathered to mark the 25th birthday of Parktone Probus Club.

Robert Renshaw, Mordialloc Rotary District 9810 Probus Chairman and Probus South Pacific Board Member, was a special guest.

Mr Renshaw congratulated Parktone Probus on its achievements and wished the club continued success for the future while highlighting the work of Probus South Pacific throughout Australia and New Zealand.

During the business session Robert heard from all of the club’s activity leaders who organise and run the various activities.

Presentations were followed by a wonderful morning tea where everyone mingled and shared friendship, fellowship and fun.

Afterwards lunch was held at Mordy HQ in Jack’s Bistro, named after the club’s first president in December 1994, Jack Davidson.

NORTH Balwyn Probus celebrated its 35th anniversary at the November meeting.

In attendance and presenting the 35th Anniversary Certificate to club president Gerald King was David Cheney from North Balwyn Rotary Club.

David was instrumental in the establishment of North Balwyn Probus, having overseen the necessary paperwork over a 10 week period that culminated in the first meeting of the Club on 13 November 1984.

North Balwyn Probus Club’s 70 members meet each second Tuesday at the Greythorn Hub, 2 Centre Way, Greythorn.

We who persisted were rewarded, both at the beauty of the forest, and at a chance meeting a film crew dressed in Robin Hood gear. Then, back to Warburton to seek shelter from the elements. Later that evening, Peter, our camera genius, took us on a photographic tour of Spain and Portugal.

Thursday, traditional lunch dine-out day, and again, a full complement of members found their way to Rayners Orchard at Woori Yallock - one car-load in which this writer was passenger, took the long way around, but eventually arrived in time for the feast.

A great place for the event, but fortunately we chose not to embark on the tractor-train tour of the orchard, as again the weather was unfriendly.

Back at camp, and another tradition of the evening, saw a group testing memory/ knowledge at Trivia Night, always a bit of a giggle. Thanks to the Boseleys and presenter Val. Friday saw many of the cabin-dwellers depart after “Champagne Breakfast”.

The ‘Remnants’ thereafter caught up on heretofore unvisited sites, including the Maroondah Dam, the spillway of which was exuding water for first time in many months.

Next events - No. 38 at Bellarine next March, and No. 39 at Mansfield on October, 2020.

OCTOBER last saw the Probian Wanderers exploring the Healesville area for its 37th Event.

A total of 66 Probians were involved, from 15 clubs, with six first-timers being welcomed. All settled in at the Big 4 Holiday Park at Badgers Creek and introduced themselves to the resident bird population.

Although numbers were down on the normal, we can claim another successful event. There are still some of these specialists can’t seem to get their priorities right in setting appointments! And, of course, escalating fees are certainly having an adverse effect on attendances.

Weather-wise, we experienced a variety of nice sunny days, light rain, and threats of rain. Some adjustment to activities to suit the conditions failed to deter us from enjoying exploration of the Yarra Valley.

Early arrivals hit the tracks with morning walks - a little dangerous to venture outside the premises due to narrow, busy roads, but ample space and variety of terrain was found within the grounds to satisfy the needs.

To activities - if anyone went hungry in the Healesville CBD they could only blame themselves! The problem then was as to one’s choice of cuisine, and how urgent the need. The favourite generally were the various bakeries.

Thereafter, by good fortune rather than good planning, the Archibald Art Show was in progress at Tarrawarra Winery, a short drive from CBD. One could taste the local vintage, then walk across to view the art exhibition. Amid some wonderful traditional paintings were some more modern, to ‘wayout’ art-works. Comments back at camp that night as to the overall winning entry tended to indicate we ‘grey nomads’ were of the olds school, and would have chosen otherwise.

Dinner dine-out saw a total attendance at the Terminus Hotel in Harker Street, quite a good choice for group bookings, the only hotel able to accommodate our numbers.

Wednesday, traditional picnic day, and the clouds threatened to upend the itinerary. Some members chose the safe option and headed for the Chocolaterie at Yarra Glen. Others headed to Warburton where roofed premises were at hand.

The bravest headed to the Redwood Forest, in Cement Creek Road. But, there was a problem - Cement Road was not particularly labelled! Precious few of us found the aforementioned trees. The secret to others who may wish to view the Forest, and who may find the appropriate ‘track’ -

What a year for Knoxfield IT’S wonderful to have a holiday, however it is also wonderful to be back at Probus catching up with friends, their holiday news, and looking forward to the coming year of fun and friendship.

At the same time, we are mindful of the devastation and misery caused by the horrendous bushfires in so many of our Australian states. We are awed and grateful for the courage and generosity of so many firefighters, police, medicos, fellow Australians and others, especially as so many of them are volunteers.

Our October meeting was brightened by the wearing of pretty or novelty hats in

preparation for the Spring Racing Carnival followed by a morning tea of delicious decorated cupcakes.

In November we enjoyed another visit to the Hosome Gingerbread Factory, resulting in some very creatively decorated gingerbread men. We were treated to morning tea and a demonstration of gingerbread house decoration and an opportunity to buy goodies at the factory shop. Lunch was at the large and varied nursery Garden World at Braeside, and then DFO Moorabbin was thoroughly inspected for bargains, which were in fact, very easy to find.

‘Leading Ladies” a comedy produced by the 1812 Theatre in Ferntree Gully was a hilarious night out, then to finish our club year, Christmas lunch at the Wantirna Club. As well as the delicious three course lunch, the tables were brightly decorated, a Christmas tree in the corner and Christmas music played in the background. Santa watched over the exchange of Kris Kringle gifts, with lucky ticket prizes delighting those with the right tickets. Our generous local MPs Alan Tudge, Kim Wells and Nick Wakeling donated great hampers and wine.

We are now looking forward to an outing to the Dolphin Research Centre, then lunch

The Blue Tango Jazz Duo will entertain us after our March AGM, then we have a visit to the CFA fire station in Bayswater to look forward to, and a day trip to view the decorated silos from Tungamah to St. James, Devonish and Goorambat is planned for April. Our Social Secretary is spoiling us.

A common interest THE Manningham Probus Interest Group is a non-incorporated entity that represents any Probus Club that desires to join and get together twice a year to enable the sharing of information and activities with each other that all leads to continually enhancing the enjoyment of individual club members.

MPIG meets twice a year and operates in accord with a written agreement between Probus South Pacific Limited and MPIG. Twenty six individual Probus Clubs are presently members of MPIG and other clubs are welcome to join at any time.

The topics vary meeting to meeting, but always involves sharing of: Speaker details the various clubs have between meetings;

that individual clubs have, that has led to often clubs getting together and joining with other clubs in these activities, and Problems that various clubs have had with their general operational and membership marketing procedures.

The MPIG is pleased to have Robert Renshaw, Rotary District 9810 Chair, a former Probus South Pacific Incorporation attend nearly all of meetings of MPIG. It also had Bruce Morley recently appointed as a board member of Probus South Pacific Limited attend the latest MPIG meeting on 18 October 2019.

Paula Piccinini, Mayor of Manningham City Council, who attended as a special guest and gave a short talk on the general role of a Council Mayor, some demographics of the Manningham area, and how Probus Clubs are able to apply to councils for small grants to help in their finances.

Dean Graham from Manningham City Council who explained an Emergency Aware Program that is being developed by the council in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch, CFA, SES and Red Cross that will help neighbours to collectively complete an emergency plan to raise awareness to existing hazards/ risks and prepare their properties to minimise the impact of an emergency event.

PAV must make changes to engage more clubs

BY JIM FREW, BITTERN FOR those that have recently joined Probus, I served as PAV vice-president from 2009 to 2011 and then served as president from 2011 to 2013.

I was also the creator and administrator of the PAV website for around seven years.

I have also been a Probus club member for some 25 years.

Some 12 months ago, your Probian journal published a letter from myself in which I expressed my serious concerns at the diminishing delegate attendances at

quarterly meetings. I felt that a major factor was the current choice of venue for these quarterly meetings.

Now, my club secretary has just shown me copy of the minutes for the August delegate meeting which advise that attendance comprised 75 delegates from 49 clubs. I have no idea what the current club membership is of PAV but, in the days when I occupied the chair, PAV club membership exceeded 400 clubs.

Delegate attendance at quarterly meetings often reached close to 200 delegates and additional seating sometimes had to be sought from hotel

management.

In my letter last year to this journal, I expressed my concerns that venues for recent delegate meetings very much favoured delegates from eastern and southern suburbs and that we should seek a central venue accessible to clubs in the western and northern suburbs and Geelong, and I am now so very pleased to see that your current president has mentioned the possibility of a meeting room adjacent to Southern Cross Station.

I think this would make it so much easier for club delegates for which Mulgrave is an impossibility. This would expand the transport options to include

public transport.

For those of us of advancing years (I myself am fast heading for 86 years!) it would mean safer travel than using a car (seniors shouldn’t be seen travelling at 100kmh on city freeways). However, we also have the headache of rush hour travel on public transport, so why not consider a city luncheon (restaurant, café, or BYO sandwiches) at noon followed by a meeting start no later than 12.45pm and concluding at 2.30pm. This beats the morning rush on trains and trams and could also miss the after-school rush.

Let’s make PAV relevant to many more member clubs.

The delights of Gippsland OUR Syndal Combined Probus Club coach trip to Metung with Chris Grafen (Highland Explorer) during the last week in October was blessed with beautiful weather as we travelled through many areas in East Gippsland.

After an early Monday morning departure from Mt Waverley, we travelled down the Princes Highway for an hour before leaving the highway and travelling through picturesque farming country and rolling hillsides.

Stops for morning tea at Blue Rock Lake, lunch at Glenmaggie Weir, and a brief stop at Bairnsdale saw us arriving at the modern and very comfortable Metung Holiday Villas for a four night stay. A lovely meal at the Metung Tavern, overlooking the boat harbour and waterfront, rounded off an enjoyable first day.

Day two included a tour of Metung, before stopping at the waterfront for a walk around town and morning tea during our free time.

This was followed by a visit to Norm Neilson’s Art Gallery. Norm is a talented local landscape photographer with a great story to tell and photographs from many parts of the world to view.

A visit to the ‘Blueberry Fields’ Blueberry farm was followed by a drive alongside the Tambo River to Bruthen for a welcome lunch stop and look around the small picturesque town.

The afternoon was spent at Lakes Entrance where many of the group walked over to the Ninety Mile Beach, as well as indulging in some shopping.

An interesting drive along the Esplanade passing by the wonderful World War I figures carved with a chainsaw, saw us back in Metung for a lovely barbecue meal prepared by the Holiday Villa staff. The evening concluded with a singalong lead by Chris.

Day three took us to Paynesville where we boarded the MV Lakes Odyssey and crossed the beautiful King Lake to Ocean Grange, viewing the plentiful bird life on the way.

Most of the group walked through the sand track to the pristine Ninety Mile Beach where a number of offshore oil and gas drilling structures could be spotted by those with keen eyesight.

Before disembarking at Paynesville we cruised along the Paynesville Quays viewing the many magnificent homes. After lunch we crossed to Raymond Island on the car ferry and spotted a number of koalas on our ‘around Island’ tour.

On the way back we headed to Eagle Point, where the flow of the Mitchell River into Lake King has produced the world’s longest silt jetty. It is possible to drive several kilometres into the lake which we did, enjoying the sea views on both sides of the coach.

A lovely dinner at the Metung Yacht Club completed another lovely day.

Day four started with a short trip to the old Stoney Creek trestle bridge - 60 feet high and 1.5 times the length of the MCG. We then drove north and, after a drive through the reserve adjacent to the Buchan Caves entrance, we stopped for morning tea at a lovely area near the junction of the

Australia Day theme The Essendon Central Probus Club recently celebrated a meeting with the Australia Day theme.

Members enjoyed themselves, starting the meeting by singing the national anthem and dressing appropriately for the day.

Awards being presented for the best dressed members!

Essendon Central is a very active club and this year will be celebrating its 30th birthday.

Meeting of the Snowy and Buchan Rivers. legendary Snowy and Buchan Rivers.

After a lunch stop and some free time at the timber town of Orbost, we followed the path of the Snowy River to its massive delta and unusual mouth at Marlo. The return journey to Metung included stops at the historic port of Nowa Nowa and a look at the picturesque Lake Tyers. An evening meal at the Swan Reach Hotel rounded off another great day.

On our final day we departed from the main highway near Bairnsdale and travelled through Bengworden and Meerlieu, before arriving at the Port of Sale. Here we boarded the historic 1912, electrically driven, MV Rubeena for a scenic cruise

which took us past the junction of the La Trobe and Thomson Rivers. We also saw a number of aboriginal ‘canoe’ trees, native birds, and the unique swing bridge designed by pianist Percy Grainger’s father.

After lunch at the Yinnar Hotel, in the small town of Yinnar, we made our way back to the main highway and onto Melbourne.

Special thanks to Chris for his driving, interesting stories, and extensive knowledge of all the stops and areas we drove through. It was a fantastic week away and everyone enjoyed the comprehensive look around this historic and picturesque part of Gippsland.

Three lifers at birthday toast THE Probus Club of Bairnsdale celebrated its 35th anniversary on 14 November 2019 at the Bairnsdale Racecourse.

Members were treated to a very nice three course meal and a central table was set up with memorabilia covering the club's history over the last 35 years.

Members were fortunate to be joined by a number of past presidents, who jointly cut the birthday cake.

Three members - Bill Bury, Geoff Robertson and Peter Bryant - were awarded life membership for their contribution to the club over the years.

Eildon is a hidden gem THE hidden gem referred to is the sleepy town of Eildon at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and custodian of the mass of water known as Lake Eildon.

From Melbourne’s north, where our Grimshaw Probus Club meets, the destination for four days was Eildon for a spring break.

With a choice of two beautiful drives to Eildon, some chose the direct route through Healesville and over the Black Spur through the towering Mountain Ash and winding uphill drive on a pleasant sunny Sunday afternoon and then onto Taggerty, Alexandra through the green valleys which nestle amongst the range.

Others chose the route through Yea where the scenery was just as pretty and the land was green and fertile. Both routes were about two hours with a break for lunch at a bakery or pub on the way.

Arriving at our accommodation, the Eildon Parkview Motor Inn just after lunch, we had time to settle in and relax before coming together in their meeting room for happy hour.

Sandra our facilitator and mother hen had dispensed folders to the group with a suggested itinerary to follow and a map of how to get there, reinforcing the written word with a short overview.

After happy hour it was out to the back of our motel units where we had a barbecue, great company and a couple of drinks. Three barbecues were available and plenty of chairs and tables.

Our other accompaniment was a range of Australian native birds from Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, King Parrots and Kookaburras. After dinner we were able to feed them with seed provided by Di and David, our hosts.

On Monday our destination was Yarck.

A 34 minute drive through Alexandra and north toward Euroa, where Sandra had arranged for the bookshop to open and the bakery to be on standby for hungry mouths to feed. There was a specialist soap and fragrance shop, another cafe/bakery and a Miner’s cottage with hand crafted wares and garden ornaments.

A drive through spectacular beef and dairy country through the hills and valleys.

The bookshop didn’t disappoint something for everyone, warm and inviting to fossick, with comfortable seats to browse. Then on for a warm drink, a pie, pasty or cake for lunch.

Happy hour with nibbles and a quiz about combinations of things, a murder of crows, a gam of whales and a giggle of girls was much fun. The prize being a bunch of chocolates? All followed by a second evening barbecue.

Day two started with a visit to the Eildon Museum and a morning tea with scones and jam and cream (with seconds), a movie about the building of the dam and a guided tour of the actual dam and spillway - high among the range.

Happy hour was followed by dinner at the Rubicon Thornton Hotel where the meals were huge and delicious. We could have used the courtesy bus provided by the hotel but we car pooled and managed well to drive the 15 minutes each way.

Wednesday saw us with free time in Alexandra, where we met for lunch after a visit to the op shops and book shops, whilst the ladies descended on the 50 per

cent off smart ladies shop.

Alexandra has many food shops. On the way home we turned right past Thornton and climbed the range to Snob’s Creek Falls which has two viewing platforms, one is 25 metres and shows the river rushing down the mountain, whilst the second one is 100 metres from the road and shows the river falling off the mountain.

We had originally settled on fish and

chips after happy hour but decided to go to the Rubicon Thornton Hotel where another feast awaited.

Pink for a good cause THE Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club October meetings over the past few years have supported Breast Cancer month in style.

Members come dressed in pink, pink cupcakes (made by members of the social committee) are served for morning tea and the meeting room is also decked out in pink.

The sea of pink is quite inspirational and reminds us all of the battle some have faced, or are presently facing, and also

gives us the opportunity to acknowledge members who are Breast Cancer survivors.

Last October was especially meaningful as we farewelled our welfare officer Jan Murray, who had very recently lost a lifelong battle with breast cancer.

Bellarine by railway MAROONDAH club members travelled to Drysdale for morning tea, before boarding the heritage train on the Bellarine Peninsular Railway.

The train travelled then to Queenscliff, for an excellent lunch at the Queenscliff Bowls Club.

Train carriages are fully enclosed but the windows can be opened and the beautiful landscape is more easily viewed.

When train whistle sounds people wave as the train passers-by - and of course members waved back!

It was a fun day finishing with afternoon tea at the Sphinx Hotel in Geelong.

Indian adventure for Tunstall TWELVE members of the Combined Probus Club of Tunstall joined up with other Probus clubs and friends, making a total of 23 for a wonderful Indian Golden Triangle adventure visiting Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur.

It was a fantastic trip, the group bonded well and the full itinerary more than met expectations.

India is a country of many contrasts, so beautiful yet so much poverty but everyone seems at peace. There is no road rage, no graffiti, but lots of poverty.

I must admit when I came into full view of the Taj Mahal, I had tears in my eyes. It was magnificent.

It was very hot and humid the day we visited but we coped despite the heat.

Given that the average age of our group was 82, I think it was remarkable that we undertook this tour with little or no problems. Those that could not climb the various steps at the sites, took a rest in the shade.

I believe the wildlife jeep safari in the early morning through Ranthambore National Park was a highlight, especially for those who got to see a tiger casually come down to drink at the waterhole. We covered many miles and incorporated several excursions each day and were quite exhausted but very happy as we relaxed and recuperated at our five star hotels at

the end of each day.

Throughout the 15 days we toured in a big air-conditioned bus, with a very skilled driver and an assistant. No traffic jam or narrow street was insurmountable. We learnt a lot about patience and tolerance.

We also had the most charming, intelligent Indian guide (Shyam) who provided us with history and advice. Shyam was very knowledgeable and imparted a lot of his philosophy and cooking tips and herbal cures. He even bought the market to us in the bus. Rather than be inundated by the sometimes very insistent sellers, Shyam would select various articles from them and show us on board and have negotiated a better price.

The people were very friendly and the children were very welcoming wherever we went.

Sue Grady and her partner Glen Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Brien from Trade Travel ensured we turned up on time and did not get lost and even found things we thought we had misplaced. They were so helpful and provided us with useful information along the way and acceded to all our requests and desires (especially when it came to shopping time).

A community that cares THE Donvale Hill Probus Club invited members from the newly formed Kerrimuir Probus and the Doncaster Valley Probus clubs to attend its Christmas meeting.

It was amazing how everyone mixed together in the true spirit to enjoy, fun fellowship and friendship.

This meeting began with Doreen Stoves AM PSM JP, chief executive officer of Doncare, giving a brief talk on exactly the amazing role that Doncare plays within the local community in Manningham and has been doing for the past 50 years.

Doreen explained that Doncare is a non-profit organisation that has proudly supported and strengthened the Manningham and surrounding areas through the provision of many personalised support services including counselling, family violence recovery and prevention services, social support, child mental health assistance, family services, emergency and material aid, volunteering programs and much, much more.

All these services are provided by approximately 50 staff and around 500 volunteers.

Following the very interesting talk, Doreen introduced a group of volunteers from the local community that adore singing and have joined together and formed a Doncare choir known as the Sassing choir.

One of the aims of the choir is to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence and their name stands for Supporters and Survivors Sing. This choir was amazing and enjoyed by all present.

Their singing was lovely to listen to, and some of their antics surprised everyone.

They performed in a very professional and humorous way.

A delightful morning tea was then provided by a group of Probus Club members to conclude what has been described by some club members as one of the best Probus meetings they had been to.

To aid Doncare perform its charitable

work, the Probus Club arranged over several previous months to conduct a food collection to assist Doncare with one of its community activities; providing food to those who are struggling financially.

It was amazing what members donated.

Apart from donations of food by Probus Club members, there were numerous other donations including quite a few Care Bears and various skin care products by Sukin through Rotary valued about $600.

What a busy year for Stawell AFTER a busy year of activities, The Ladies Gold Reef Club of Stawell celebrated at the December meeting, with a Christmas luncheon.

Apart from the monthly meetings, activities this year have included a day trip to Nhill, a mystery trip, a four day trip to Warrnambool and surrounds, barbecues, Film in Ballarat, a four-day trip to King Island and some dining out lunches.

There have been several very interesting speakers at the monthly meetings and inductions of new members throughout the year as well.

20 years up for Greenhills ON Thursday 31 October 2019 Greenhills Mixed Probus Club celebrated the formation of the club 20 years ago at a luncheon held at Bridges Restaurant in Hurstbridge.

There was plenty of mirth from members watching the powerpoint show of activities and antics of members over the 20 year period.

Nearly 100 members attended including several foundation members and 15 past presidents, headed by inaugural president Joyce Hart (now 101 years of age) and still attending regular meetings.

President Mary Roe reflected on the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s past and remarked on the firm friendships that had formed over the years.

Mary then invited Joyce Hart to cut the cake.

Hastings celebrates 25th THE Hastings Combined Probus Club celebrated its 25th Birthday at the local Sports Club, which is the regular monthly meeting place. Before the party started, the usual monthly meeting was conducted with club business, which was over in record time.

Members were told that the inaugural meeting in 1994 was only with small numbers, approximately 15 ladies and men. Only two of those, therefore foundation members, Joy and her husband, Percy Pulham, remain and are still active members.

Joy received the 25 year foundation certificate, presented to her by the Local Member Neil Burgess, who also presented President Shirley Prout with a certificate of congratulations for the club’s efforts to reach this milestone and a certificate from Probus South Pacific Sydney.

The club also received some yellow balloons to decorate the venue from them.

Jean Wood was inducted as the inaugural president. Joy, who was the source of information, said that at one time the club had nearly 90 members and they were thinking of putting a limit on the membership, but it never happened.

At one stage the ladies had a knitting group, where they knitted for Children Homes and for Hospitals, for newly born babies, but as the ladies got older they stopped.

Every month, where possible, Barbara introduces a guest speaker which is very much appreciated. The club can do with some more new members as we are all getting a little older. At around 12 midday everyone went, it had been a good day.

Enchanting trek for Probians A happy bunch of Pakenham East Probians took over The Enchanted Gardens in Arthur’s Seat on Friday 22 November.

Not ones to let a little bit of heat beat them, they walked and explored the length and breadth of the magical garden displays.

They didn’t tackle the zip line, the tube slides or venture up top for tree surfing, instead walking the mazes and enjoying the water fountains and shady places at the top with glorious views of the lake and surrounding areas.

A big thank you went to Kay Dempster for organising a wonderful outing.

Pakenham clubs gather in Probus friendship PAKENHAM'S East Probus Club hosted the Year 2020 Friendship Day on 15 of January - a fun gathering between three Pakenham Probus clubs.

It was held at the new venue of the Pakenham Golf Club - what a beautiful new place.

Morning tea was provided by the host club, as was the entertainment that followed from the Arsenal's men doing synchronised swimming, which was something to behold.

Not to forget the Fairies of Eighty, Tinker Bell, Moonshine, Twinkletoes, Starlight and Silver Rose.

After Lunch the group was entertained

by Don Jones, a comedian, who had everyone in stitches with laughter.

A big thank you to Marlene Knaap for her wonderful choreography and her tireless work to get us into shape for the fun skits.

A great day was had by all.

Historic tributes on Silo path FROM verdant pastures to rusty, run-down buildings, the Silos beckon a historic message and tribute to landscape, animals and local people.

Members of Heathmont Ladies Probus Club enjoyed the company of U3A ladies from Bayswater and East Ringwood and four Heathmont men and partners. Loads of chatter, laughter and recollections have punctuated the days. Sylvia did a pirouette in the gravel and Penny didn’t not see the large Rainbow.

From a Devonshire tea at St Anne’s winery, the group then enjoyed lunch before visiting Rapanyup Silo, which portrayed a young netballer and a footballer of the locality.

Next at Sheep Hill members delighted in an Indigenous family illustrated boldly and realistically. At Brim the silos depicted four community characters linked to the land.

Members travelled past acres of green fields with mementoes of the past littered at desolate homesteads.

Friendly service greeted the group at Horsham.

The next day Rosebery presented an

image of grit and determination on the stance of young farmers.

Patchewollock’s large silo depicted an expression of fatigue, fire, change and resilience. At Lascelles, a family duo typified the stoical endurance of families on the land.

Also, at Sea Lake the group was thrilled by a newly completed five-silos piece. A panorama unfolded of vibrantly coloured images of the night sky, trees, aboriginal totems, an eagle’s nest, emus - all enhanced by the inclusion of a young girl on a swing.

Notably each artist credited the locality and labours of its inhabitants. A rich tapestry of toil and harmony was felt.

Day three dawned and the group headed south to Simply Tomatoes and Aussi Quilts.

A rustically restored homestead boasted green pastures, free RV camping for a couple of days and a brilliant example of cottage industry. A pondage was home to several geese and the array of woollen items intrigued many. Quilts, heat bags of various shapes for one’s anatomy, pillows etc lured the pocket. The family had invested in the locality and won many

awards also for their Italian tomato dish.

From there they journeyed to The Spannerman, John Piccoli’s creative garden. Truly a labour of creativity against physical challenges, he has created a garden that echoes all forms of design.

From Le Penseur to a Marlin, from two stallions fighting, to clocks and dials, the artistry of the man is unique. Currently working on a kangaroo, he also houses macaws, peacocks, deer and has used over ¼ million spanners. Thanks to tourism he has adjusted to harsh times.

And so the group headed home - grey clouds growing on the horizon. A late luncheon was eaten at Logan’s Pub in the Scrub - a rather quaint, tired yet friendly establishment in the middle of nowhere.

All meals were tasty and offered a choice of several dishes, the driver courteous and the beds most welcoming.

A vote of appreciation went to Sylvia for her organisation and to the visitors who joined in. Where to next?

Touring around SA PAYNESVILLE Probus Club recently held their annual club tour with a trip to Adelaide plus five days touring on Kangaroo Island and a four-day Murray River cruise from Mannum to Blanchetown and return.

The tour included overnight stays in Adelaide, Victor Harbour and Handorf where

great fun and fellowship was enjoyed by all the participants.

As usual, the rule that “what happens on tour stays on tour“ applied, however rumour has it that some members were involved in drinking a bar dry. Wonder Who? Thanks to Tour Coordinator, Loraine Lloyd for arranging and enjoyable trip.

Portarlington takes to Bright THANKS to two of our lovely ladies Jan and Aline and the tremendous staff of Big 4 Bright, last October a large group from Portarlington Bayview Probus made their own way to Bright in the beautiful Ovens Valley, for an extremely full-on five days of fun and friendship.

Some took their own caravans and others hired cabins.

The Big 4 Bright Caravan Park was the destination and on arrival they couldn’t have been accommodated better, everyone was happy with the quality of their cabins, and their one of a kind “Sky Deck” which the group had sole use of on two nights for functions.

Jan and Aline, the enthusiastic tour organisers, were more than happy with the help offered by management and staff.

Bright has some lovely things on offer; some went shopping, river walks, Art Galleries and Museums, some played Golf on a very warm day and then the group dined at the Bright Brewery in the heart of Bright, where you can sample a variety of six beers for $12.

Most boarded a bus for an interesting day out starting with the Red Stag Deer and Emu farm where they sampled the largest scones known to man for morning tea, spent a fortune in their gift shop and then moved on to the “Artisan Mills where they grow and process pumpkin seeds and oils of all kinds which were sampled.

A very informative talk was given by the owner and the group tried pumpkin seeds in all flavours, even chocolate coated.

The bus continued to the “Ringer Reef

Winery” where there was pre-ordered cheese and antipasto platters with some delicious wines.

Dinner that night was back at the park on the Sky Deck, catered for by “Dumu Balcony Café” a group of Indigenous Youth in training who run a cafe in town, but also do outside catering.

The group was treated to some delicious food which could be highly recommended.

DUMU means “Black Duck” in the local Dhudhuroa language.

The last day was full steam ahead with pancakes for breakfast supplied and cooked by the Big 4 staff, followed by games in the park overlooking the beautiful Ovens River which was lots of fun.

The last night was fancy dress in the Italian theme, again at the Sky Deck with an outside vendor van cooking pizzas, this topping off what has been a very memorable time.

It was a highly recommended trip.

Something fishy...

THIS 11-metre long Murray Cod near the Swan Hill train station lured in a Probus Club to capture this quick snap.

What a catch this giant cod made! It had reeled in 27 members of the Dingley Central Probus Club whilst they were touring the Silo Art Trail.

These Probians travelled through the Wimmera and Mallee districts of Victoria and visited small towns such as Rupanyup, Sheep Hills, Patchewollock, Sea Lake and Lascelles and admired the amazing largescale portraits painted on silos.

When their coach driver arrived at Swan Hill, the giant Murray Cod caught their attention for a photo opportunity. It was at that moment the Murray Cod had them â&#x20AC;&#x153;hook line and sinkerâ&#x20AC;&#x153;!

Go straight to gaol...

NOT often do you see someone trying to get in to prison, but on this occasion members of the Probus Club of Dingley Central lined up to enter the lockup.

They were touring on the ever popular Silo Art Trail of the Western District of Victoria.

On the way they called into a prison that was built in 1861, known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;J Wardâ&#x20AC;&#x153;, Araratâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Old Gaol and Asylum for the Criminally Insane.

Experienced and knowledgeable volunteers guided the Probians through the facilities, telling of many gruesome incidents throughout its history.

Closed in 1991 the old gaol is now a museum that houses some of the medical

instruments used to treat inmates.

Infamous prisoner Mark â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chopperâ&#x20AC;&#x153; Read spent a couple of months in â&#x20AC;&#x153;J Wardâ&#x20AC;&#x153; before being transferred back to Pentridge Prison.

Club members lined up to view the historic basement kitchen where trusted prisons used to bake bread and prepared meals daily.

The population of Western Victoria is declining faster than anywhere else in Victoria, so to help offset this the Silo Art Trail was created. It features gigantic murals painted on huge wheat silos.

Besides looking at silo art, as the Probus Club of Dingley Central discovered, there are plenty of other fascinating tourist stops and activities to participate in.

Local employment has been boosted from Probus Clubs and other tourists enjoying the art trail.

Formal Night Dine-Out

Tour of Cruden Farm ON 26 September 2019, 17 ladies from East Malvern Combined Probus Club, took a mini bus, provided by Stonnington Council, to visit Cruden Farm.

Cruden Farm in Langwarrin was the home of the late Dame Elizabeth Murdoch.

The head gardener gave them a tour of the magnificent gardens and entertained them with stories about Dame Elizabeth.

From there they all went to lunch followed by a visit to the Tyabb Packing House for coffee. The garden visit was excellent, but you need to book.

ON 20 November 2019, the Probus Club of Donvale Hill held a Formal Night Dine-out at the Eastern Bell Chinese Restaurant in Balwyn.

The night was attended to by 27 club members who all enjoyed an atmosphere where conversation could be held and easily heard.

The seating was at round tables with plenty of space between the tables to enable the diners to get up and talk to others seated at their tables.

The food was really enjoyed by all and the whole evening turned out to be a great night.

Spring fun around Barham THE Probus Club of Ballarat South held their Spring Caravan and Cabins trip at Barham on the Murray River. There were around 26 members present and all had a great time.

We had an interesting cruise on the Gannawarra Wetlands at Koondrook, which included a delicious lunch in beautiful weather. We would certainly recommend Wetlander Cruises to other clubs.

We did lots of walking and bike riding, and found the Redgum Statue Walk from Barham to Koondrook very interesting. We also played golf, cards, had a trivia night,

shopped and ate at the local Barham businesses, who were very welcoming.

On another day we visited Restdown Winery where we tasted their organic wines and enjoyed yummy platters of local produce for lunch.

Happy hours at the Barham Tourist Park were usually the highlight of our day, as we gathered together to exchange stories of our adventures and fun throughout the day. We are fortunate to belong to a happy, friendly club of Probus mates.

Schramm’s Cottage visit ON a lovely sunny day in November, the Probus Club of Donvale Hill joined with members from the Kerrimuir Probus Club on a visit Schramm’s Cottage in East Doncaster.

The cottage is a historical gem in the City of Manningham that was built by a German pioneer schoolteacher and

orchardist in 1874.

The visit included a guided tour of the cottage and surrounding grounds, outbuildings and small cemetery.

Afterwards members treated themselves to a lovely afternoon tea, enjoying cakes, coffee, and chatting with both old friends and new friends that were met on the day.

Mystery bus trip enlightening FOLLOWING guest speaker John Millingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation on the Karen people living and working in Nhill, Ararat Probus Club made the two hour trip to see firsthand how these immigrants had changed the face of a small town.

About 10 years ago the local firm Luv A Duck was looking for unskilled labour and John and wife Margaret travelled to the Melbourne suburb of Werribee.

After a short presentation they had a clipboard full of names from Karen people wishing to move into far Western Victoria.

A lot has happened since then and now Nhill has hundreds of Karen living, working and mixing with the locals.

They are buying houses, sending their children to school, opening their own shops

shop Paw Po that trains women in sewing and embroidery.

The pride in their work showed and everyone had a big smile on their face.

The Probians were also shown their learning centre, The Patch, as well as the Community Garden.

The Karen are now working throughout the town in hospitality, health care, tourism, education and plenty more.

The club had 53 members, guests and family attend for the outing, stopping at Horsham for morning tea and Sheep Hills for afternoon tea to view the silo art.

If you are travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just drive through Nhill, stop for a while and discover what we did, it is well worth your time.

This could not have happened without the local people providing heaps of

volunteer hours providing life skill training, English lessons and an untold amount of support to make this experiment work.

Probians find treatment plant tour fascinating THE Combined Probus Club of Wantirna Heights recently visited the Melbourne Water Eastern Treatment Plant (ETP) in Carrum Downs.

The tour commenced after donning high vis vests and safety glasses.

When the raw sewage arrives, it is screened to remove unwanted items, most of the odour and methane gas. The methane gas is used to power the plant.

After screening, the remaining sludge is agitated in concrete channels to assist bacteria separate liquid from solids. Then it goes into large vats where compressed air is added to further aid separation.

Highly skilled divers sometimes need to don protective suits and enter the dark, non-buoyant liquid to rectify faults. They are paid well for each dive.

Solids are then filtered through pine bark and dried with the liquid going into holding ponds - all in 24 hours.

This water is only good for industry or irrigation, but many water birds think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay. Further treatment makes the water drinkable, but only about 10 per cent is sold with the rest going into the bay.

This fascinating and informative tour finished with final clean up in the Education Centre.

Lilydale still going strong LILYDALE Ladies Probus Club celebrated its 28th birthday at Yering Meadows Golf Club.

Twenty-two members attended to enjoy a beautiful meal and views.

Three members who have been with the club for practically all those years and all 90-plus helped cut the cake.

Gold scarves are given to members when they reach 90. Pictured are Jean Foster (foundation member and three times president), Denise McNellis 96 (forgot her scarf) and Sylvia Hack 92.

Club is still going strong after 28 years and enjoying all things Probus has to offer.

Blackburn Central won over by Collingwood icon from the props department at Channel 9 in hopes to liven up the cheer squad.

Not many members were Collingwood supporters, but left on the day a fan of “Joffa“ and in awe of the work he has done over the years in support of others.

The gold coat was framed and sold at auction for $7000 and this went to charities. However the gold coat has been hard to replace as it has been ordered several times from China and to date unable to get the sizing right for Australia.

As you can see by the picture Wally Stone (member) is modelling a seven times extra large!

He delighted members with an excellent talk, not very much on football, but mainly on his life’s experiences.

He spoke of his work with the homeless whilst being part of the Salvation Army (for 28 years) and his dedication to charities, especially epilepsy.

The “gold coat“ was mentioned and how it came about being the highlight of the cheer squad.

So it’s hats off to 2020 THE Traralgon Combined Probus Club recently celebrated the farewell to 2019 and welcomed in 2020.

The “Crazy Hat” theme was well received and provided much laughter and frivolity.

Each guest told the story of their hat and how the idea materialised. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.

A game of charades followed, as well as dancing and karaoke (don’t think anyone will be joining a choir anytime soon).

Cathedral of the Wimmera AMAZING is the most common entry in the visitor’s book in The Stick Shed at Murtoa, situated in the heart of Victoria’s Wheat Belt and the beginning of the now famous Yarriambiack Silo Art Trail.

Immense in size, The Stick Shed spans the length of three Olympic swimming pools and has been dubbed the “Cathedral of the Wimmera” The Marmalake/Murtoa Grain Store was constructed in 1941 as a solution for grain storage during the World War II wheat glut, when exports were restricted.

Built from 560 unmilled Mountain Ash poles or ‘sticks’ (56 rows of 10) to support the corrugated iron roof of the shed, it was soon dubbed the ‘Stick Shed’. The shed is about 270 metres long, 60 metres wide and about 19 metres high along the ridge.

The roof and walls are of corrugated iron painted ferric red, the 1.6 hectare floor is of concrete.

Work commenced on 25 September 1941 and the store was ready to receive wheat in January 1942, after an incredible four months construction time The Stick Shed was closed in 1989, but the heritage significance of this unique structure was recognised. and it was added to the Historic Buildings Register (now the Victorian Heritage Register) in June 1990.

The shed is now No. 101 on the Australian Heritage List, the highest heritage listing in the country The heritage significance of the building is articulated in a 1994 study by Econsult which noted: This monumental structure is the largest

surviving in Victoria based on vernacular principles and materials, as well as being the largest timber frame structure and the only one of its type still standing in Victoria.

The Murtoa ‘stick shed’ is fundamental to Victoria and Australia’s cultural identity.

The method used to construct this very large storage shed demonstrates considerable initiative on the part of its unknown designers It is the interior that evokes the strongest response from all who visit it: “It resembles a giant, serene cathedral of tall unmilled timber poles. From certain angles within, the wooden support poles resemble a forest of trees…’ This sense of awe and wonder makes this interior space one of the most impressive in Australia The shed has undergone extensive

conservation funded by the Heritage Council of Victoria and Heritage Victoria.

These works adopted repair methods which have been used in the past Since opening for public viewing in October 2016, The Stick Shed has become an extremely popular destination for Probus Club tours , Caravanners and general tourists. When life needs helping hand GETTING the right support at home can make a big difference in helping you to live independently on your own. Whether it is personal care to get ready for the day, or some help around the house to keep it spick and span, there are some services you just can’t do without.

At 97, Dorothy Palmer still lives on her own, thanks to the home support she receives from BlueCross, a leading aged care provider.

“I live on my own and I rely on my carers who come daily to help me with various activities,” says Dorothy, who receives private home care services from BlueCross twice a day, seven days a week.

“I have a carer who comes in the morning to make my breakfast and help me shower and get dressed. She also makes the bed and cleans up the place before she leaves. In the evening, another carer comes to help me get into bed. I take Sustagen so she also gives me that.”

Dorothy enjoys reading and watching the television, but also finds the time to knit for charities supporting disadvantaged children.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Dorothy moved to Australia six years ago.

Prior to that, Zimbabwe and South Africa were her home for many decades when her husband, a pilot with the UK Royal Air Force, was posted there.

“I met Philip when we were working in a patent attorney’s office. We were both in our late teens then,” recalls Dorothy.

“When World War II broke out, he joined the army and we were separated for two

“When Philip died in 2010, I lived on my own for a few years. I couldn’t drive anymore so I decided to move to Australia in 2013 to be closer to family. I have a son in Australia - he has been living here for over 40 years,” says Dorothy, who has seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren across Australia and the UK. Having lived in three continents, Dorothy

has had her fair share of travelling but one experience eludes her - cruising along the Rhine River in Europe. “I guess I’m too old for that now, but I’ve lived a good life so I have no regrets,” says Dorothy with a twinkle in her eye. “I enjoy living here in Australia and being supported to live the life I want.”

THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler.

“It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago!” Mabel said.

“The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a heated seat and other features,” she said.

The bidet can be used in two simple steps. Press the bottom/feminine wash button and the bidet provides a stream of warm water to clean thoroughly. Then with just the push of another button, warm air gently dries without the need for toilet paper.

Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl.

“It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue”.

Bowls winners MOOROOPNA Probus Club president Len Cockram welcomed bowlers for the annual Probus Bowls Day on a glorious sunny day at Mooroopna Bowls Club.

After the conditions of play were read out, 12 teams took to the green and started the day’s play with a spider, won by Don Collie from the Rochester club.

Clubs represented were Rochester, Benalla, Cobram-Barooga, Shepparton, Shepparton South and Mooroopna.

One game of 12 ends was played before a delicious cold collation lunch followed by sweets and tea and coffee.

After lunch 10 ends were played and, at the end of play, a check of the cards revealed three game winners.

The winner was Ian McCarten from Shepparton South, second A Saunders from Cobram-Barooga and third M Janke from Mooroopna.

After a wonderful afternoon tea, president Les Cockram presented the winners with their trophies and wished them a safe journey home.

Syndal’s racing theme SYNDAL Combined Probus Club held a themed (Melbourne Cup) general meeting in late October where many members dressed in their ‘Race Day’ finery.

Together with a number of race sweeps, a special morning tea included a glass of champagne and some

delicious strawberries and cream.

Fashion prize winners were: Best Dressed Couple - Bob and Del Gilder, Best Hat - Jill Douglas, Best Dressed Male - Norris Gale, Best Dressed Lady Carole Smith and Best Novelty Hat - Tony Wilson.

Probus Golf Day 2019 AS always, the annual Probus Golf Day started early with all the registered players congregated at the Box Hill Golf Club, with Ryman Healthcare being the major sponsor.

Mitcham/Nunawading was again the host club and organised wonderful facilities for the event. After a breakfast of egg and bacon rolls with hot tea and coffee the teams hit the fairways for a challenging 18 holes of four person Ambrose.

This year there was three sections with all male, all female and mixed teams competing with the best score winning the perpetual trophy.

After four and a half hours teams returned to the clubhouse exhausted,

hungry and thirsty for a sit-down lunch and the presentation.

The President of Probus Victoria Rennus Crossley presented the trophies with the overall winners and holders of the perpetual trophy being the Combined Wheelers Hill (Raiders), runners ups were Syndal Mens and the best mixed team was Donvale Central, unfortunately no allfemale team entered.

This year’s event is still available for hosting and any Probus club interested is encouraged to contact the PAV golf coordinator Kerry Fraser 0423 350 534.

Sound advice on scams IN November 2019, the Ladies of Langwarrin Club invited Steve Polgar and Dean Cooper from Stev-Computer, a known business located in Blackburn, to speak to them on the many tricks of the trade used by fraudsters, scammers and rogues.

The ladies watched an informative computer presentation which identified that the majority of scams come via the telephone followed by the use of the computer.

Fraudsters are usually from overseas and for the first time in Australia people have forked out over half a billion dollars to tricksters.

That was over $500,000,000 according to the ACCC. Steve passed out a handout with some useful telephone contact details, should members ever come into contact with strangers over the phone who demand access to their personal information.

In times of fire and poor air quality it’s important to keep an eye on pets.

Protect pets from smoke Vets&Pets Dr Andrew Kapsis, Head Veterinarian at Lort Smith BUSHFIRES are common in Australia, however, we are now seeing an extension of our normal fire season. Additionally, we have seen a decrease in air quality around Victoria in regions far from bushfire frontlines.

It’s important to be prepared and learn what to look for if your pet is exposed to smoke or bad air quality due to smoke.

For our beloved furry friends exposure to smoke, even in small quantities, can result in smoke inhalation related injuries.

Fires are known to produce damaging substances that can affect your pet’s health and wellbeing.

A pet that has been exposed to small amounts of smoke for a short time will demonstrate different clinical signs to one who has been inside a smoky room for an extended period of time.

Animals with respiratory or cardiovascular disease should be watched closely during times of poor air quality. Flat faced breeds such as bulldogs, pugs and Persians have restricted ability to breathe also placing them at a higher risk.

Your pet might be affected by smoke if: They are coughing, breathing rapidly, or having difficulty breathing Their eyes are irritated They appear weak or disoriented.

If your pet is showing any of these signs

it’s important they receive urgent veterinary attention. The treatment of this condition depends on how severely your pet has been affected. In some cases a pet might be hospitalised for a few days to monitor their progress.

Oxygen therapy is a common treatment for smoke inhalation. Additionally fluids are normally administered to help keep the lungs moist and decrease the risk of additional complications related to dehydration. At times, the smoke inhalation might irritate your pet’s air passages. In these cases pain medication might be administered to keep them comfortable.

To help your pet avoid smoke inhalation, a number of steps can be taken during times of poor air quality: Keep pets indoors where possible Keep your windows and doors shut Minimise walks outside Ensure your air conditioner is on the recirculate setting If you have access to an air purifier, utilise it on days of poor air quality When the smoke clears, ensure you air out your house.

If you believe your pet might be affected by smoke, seek veterinary attention.

The good news is that most companion animals, when treated in a timely manner, have a good prognosis.
