About 35 preps embarked on their first day of school including five-year-olds Ivy, Thapelo, and Zion (pictured) who gathered for a group hug while taking part in a range of fun games on Monday 3 February.

Assistant principal Di Fernand said despite some nerves among parents and pupils, the day went "quite smoothly" with the school welcoming new families to its multicultural community.

By Brendan Rees A key figure in an IBAC corruption investigation and a former Casey mayor has taken aim at his fellow councillors after they reluctantly granted a request for extended paid leave.

At a public council meeting on Tuesday 4 February, councillors voted for embattled councillor Sam Aziz a leave of absence until 31 March citing medical grounds.

Cr Aziz is one of the keys players in the Casey land scandal where it's alleged he pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from a developer in exchange for favourable planning decisions.

ber before the Independent Broad-based Anticorruption Commission (IBAC) conducted its hearings.

Casey mayor Susan Serey said at the meeting the decision to grant Cr Aziz had "not been made lightly," and "the situation is less than ideal".

She said council was bound by their obligations under the Local Government Act, which fell "far short from what I know our community expects.

"Councillors around the table feel the same way," Cr Serey said.

"Having considered the medical advice provided by Cr Aziz in support of his application, as well as the legal advice which has re-

iterated our obligation to not unreasonably refuse leave, believe we had no alternative to do otherwise.

"I want to stress that my councillor colleagues sitting around this table wouldn't have voted for this motion unless it had potentially other serious legal implications for the city of Casey and its ratepayers," Cr Serey said.

In a Facebook message, Cr Aziz hit back at the mayor, labelling her statement as "denigrating".

"Tonight council approved a further leave of absence for me after I submitted a detailed medical report explaining why I am not able to return to duty at this stage," Cr Aziz's statement said.

"That was a report and not just a 'medical certificate'.

"I have remained deliberately silent since this ordeal started in November last year, in what has become a media circus, and a savage feeding frenzy by certain fringe groups and keyboard warriors, who have always had an axe to grind," his statement read.

"It appears that sober and fair assessment has completely gone out the window, despite the undeniable success of the City of Casey, and our obvious record in delivering world class infrastructure and excellent services for our residents, supported by a very efficient and financially lean administration".

Wife-killer jailed

Amanda Harris was stabbed to death in July 2018. depressed" with friends saying his behaviour was "erratic".

A forensic psychiatrist found Eckersley was in a drug induced psychosis during his offending, caused by an overuse of Tramadol - for which he had been prescribed after a workplace knee injury.

Eckersley pleaded guilty to murder on 29 April, 2019.

In her victim impact statement, Ms Harris's sister said she had been devastated by the death and felt "robbed of a life together".

In sentencing, Judge Champion told Eckersley: "Your actions have destroyed your own family".

"You treated your children callously after they had witnessed your brutality by driving them away and telling them to tell others that Ms Harris had committed suicide".

Judge Champion described the murder as "brutal killing," saying it was "difficult to fully imagine" the impact the murder had had on their children.

"Ms Harris was defenceless against your attack and completely innocent. There was no basis for your delusions that she was trying to kill you or your children by poisoning".

Judge Champion described Ms Harris as a "loving and caring partner and mother".

Man denies sawn-off shotgun DNA link

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne East man accused of family violence, drug trafficking and possessing a sawnoff shotgun has been refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 4 February.

Police had allegedly found the 25-year-old self-confessed ice addict with his bloodied and bruised partner in a Commodore at Eden Rise Village shopping centre in Berwick on Boxing Day afternoon.

The "distressed" woman, "crying" and "hyperventilating", had injuries to her neck, eyes, face and ears, Detective Senior Constable Andrew Paternott, of Victoria Police's Armed Crime Squad, told the court.

She refused to make a statement but told police that the man had taken her phone after accusing her of "playing around", Det Sen Const Paternott said.

The accused denied assaulting her during a "heated", drug-affected argument at his parent's home in Cranbourne East that morning.

The couple fled from the home after the man's mother made a triple-0 call to report the assault at 1am earlier that day, police alleged.

Police also charged the man with being a prohibited person possessing a firearm, linking him to a double-barrelled sawn-off shot

gun seized from a Lancer in Cranbourne North in January.

His genetic material allegedly matched DNA on the gun's trigger.

Ammunition found in a black Puma bag in the Commodore's boot also matched the gun - though the man disputed owning the bag, its contents or handling the gun.

Det Sen Const Paternott said police seized the man's Louis Vouitton satchel from the Commodore on the day of his arrest.

Inside the satchel was what police believed to be crystal meth in deal bags, more than $800 cash, an ice pipe and another person's bankcard, the court heard.

The man admitted he'd bought an "eightball" or about 3.5 grams of 'ice' that day, the court heard.

Police also seized a flick-knife, sheathed knife, Taser, hatchet, stolen number plates and a deal bag of what was believed to be ice, stolen bank and ID cards from the car.

A spent ammunition round was also found under the man's bed at the family home, the court heard.

Family members refused to make formal statements about the alleged assault, Det Sen Const Paternott said.

Police were relying on photos of the partner's injuries and the context of the mother's triple-0 call, the court heard.

Defence barrister Nicholas Hanos argued that the man would receive drug treatment on a CISP program, if released on bail.

The man may not serve a jail sentence, given the prosecution case for the assault and weapons offences were "weak", Mr Hanos said.

Magistrate Doug Bolster said the man failed to show compelling reasons for bail.

"In addition to that, I'm concerned that if released, he's likely to commit further offences.

"He's got a severe addiction to drugs - he's told police that he can't get off the drugs and he's got a $600-a-day habit."

Mr Bolster noted the man's 36 days in remand since his arrest on Boxing Day would not be sufficient sentence, if found guilty on the charges.

He said the prosecution case was "not the strongest I've seen but certainly not the weakest".

The man was remanded to face a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 March.

A man who was in a drug-induced psychosis when he stabbed his wife to death at their Cranbourne North home while two of their children watched on has been jailed for 18 years.

On the morning of 7 July, 2018, Daniel Eckersley, 40, used a hammer to smash items in the kitchen before punching and kicking his 36-year-old wife, Amanda Harris, after experiencing delusions she and their children had tried to poison him, Supreme Court Judge John Champion said in his sentencing remarks on 30 January.

Eckersley then reached for a 120mm knife and stabbed Ms Harris in the head, neck, chest and upper body as his son tried to pull him away but was kicked away by Eckersley, who he was under the influence of the drug Tramadol, a commonly used analgesic or pain killer which acts on the central nervous system.

During the trial, the court was told Eckersley set fire to the house using a cigarette lighter as Ms Harris' body lay in a pool of blood in the dining room. During his rage, Eckersley "applied the lighter flame" to his daughter's shoulder before taking his three children and dog and fleeing the scene.

One neighbour, who was an off-duty firefighter, entered the house and dragged Ms Harris' body outside but there were no signs of life, Judge Champion said.

Eckersley was later arrested by heavily armed officers from the Victoria Police Special Operations Group at a friend's house.

Judge Champion said days before the incident, Eckersley, a former baker, was "sad and

In the statement, he said he did finish the "work I have been doing overseas" and changed a return flight home from 8 December to 19 November last year, and had "paid a significant non-refundable fare difference to do so."

"However, I was prevented from boarding the aircraft at check-in due to a very serious cardiac health condition.

"The mayor was given documentary evidence of this flight change, as well as detailed medical evidence of the progress of my health condition," Cr Aziz stated.

Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek said he expected councillors "to turn up to meetings and do their job".

"Under the Local Government Act, the office of a councillor becomes vacant if they are absent from four ordinary meetings of the council without obtaining leave," Mr Somyurek said.

This week, the State Government announced it would extend the tenure of Casey monitor Laurinda Gardner until 11 February.

Ms Garner was originally due to provide her report on councillor governance and decisionmaking to the Minister by 31 January, following her appointment on 27 November last year.

Mr Somyurek said he would "carefully consider" the monitor's report "to determine if any further intervention is warranted at the council, and respond in due course".

Meanwhile, Liberal MP for Gembrook Brad Battin called on Casey councillors to "step down immediately."

"It may sound unfair, but the Casey councillors should step down, remove all risk to the company and have administrators appointed until all these matters are resolved," he said.

The Casey Ratepayers and Residents Association spokesman Brendan Browne council's decision to grant Cr Aziz leave was not what ratepayers deserved.

"We just can't have this ongoing situation ... the State Government needs to act and dismiss them," he said.

IBAC examinations will restart on 2 March and are open to the public.

Our animal shame

By Danielle Kutchel The City of Casey can add a new title to its belt - but this one isn't cause for celebration.

For the third year running, the area has recorded the second-highest number of animal cruelty reports in Victoria, according to RSPCA data.

In the 2018-19 reporting year, the RSPCA received 561 reports of animal cruelty in Casey.

That's up from 462 in 2017-18, itself an increase from 435 in 2016-17.

Only the Greater Geelong City Council ranked higher this year, with 617 reports.

The horrifying result comes after notable cases of animal cruelty made headlines in recent weeks, including a kangaroo that was hit by an arrow and left for dead in Lysterfield Park in January, and a dove that was shot by a blow dart in Cranbourne barely a week later.

More than 11,000 reports were made to the RSPCA Inspectorate from across the state in 2018-19.

The 11,638 cruelty reports received during 2018-19 represent an increase of almost 1,000 reports compared to the previous year (10,642), or 9.4 per cent.

Offences include instances of animals with insufficient food, water or shelter, concerns about hygiene, grooming and housing conditions, reports of underweight animals, sick and injured animals not receiving veterinary treatment, concerns about animals being beaten or wounded and instances of abandoned animals.

In November 2019, thoroughbred gelding Badger and paint mare Dakota were added to the distressing list.

The pair had been watched by RSPCA Victoria senior inspector Dani and her team for three years.

Each time, the owner complied however the welfare issues were recurring, and ultimately the owner surrendered both horses to RSPCA Victoria.They are currently in care at an RSPCA Victoria support facility, where they are being provided with necessary treatment before they can be moved to RSPCA Victoria's Pearcedale location.

Once at Pearcedale they will be provided with time to recuperate, ready for their forever home.

They're some of the lucky ones.

appointed to note that neglect made up the highest proportion of animal cruelty concerns reported, indicating many animals in Victoria are not receiving the most basic standard of care, such as sufficient food, water and shelter.

"Neglect is a form of cruelty, and it is heartbreaking to know so many animals continue to suffer across our state due to lack of basic care," Dr Walker said.

"We also have significant concerns about horse welfare in Victoria, with 10,601 horses involved in cruelty reports during 2018-19, which represents a 29 per cent increase on the previous year. ""The 2018-19 animal cruelty report statistics clearly illustrate the need for further education and for people to seek help if they are having trouble providing basic care for their animals."

A group of residents from a Cranbourne East retirement village have banded together to raise $1500 for the bushfire appeal.

About 140 people gathered for music, comedy and afternoon tea on Sunday 2 February at the Lifestyle Casey Fields village.

The money raised will be donated to the Narre Warren CFA in memory of Ian Turriff, a beloved past resident who was, for many years, a passionate volunteer and supporter of the Narre Warren CFA. Members of the brigade, Janice Turriff and Daniel Kraan, were presented a cheque, who said the funds would be extremely useful to get their truck back on the road again.

"We are so grateful that so many are contributing in all sorts of ways," the brigade members said.

While the Narre Warren fire truck is out fighting fires, members of the Lifestyle men's woodworking group went above and beyond their call of duty by donating a handmade toy firetruck.

Police set up a crime scene around the house. 204178

By Brendan Rees A primary school was forced into lockdown after a man was attacked in a nearby home invasion in Berwick on Tuesday 4 February.

A 34-year-old Berwick man was in a serious but stable condition after being allegedly assaulted by thugs at a property on Centre Road about 1.30pm.

Paramedics treated the victim who was taken to Dandenong Hospital after suffering multiple injuries which were deemed non-life threatening.

Students at the nearby Berwick Fields Primary School were kept indoors for the afternoon after a message was sent to parents alerting them of the incident.

The message assured parents the "incident does not involve the school but we have spoken with members on site and have decided as a result to keep all of the students inside for the afternoon."

"When students are dismissed at 3.15 we will have extra staff on supervision on Centre Road," the message stated.

Police say the unknown group fled and no arrests have been made.

"Investigators have been told a group unknown offenders have arrived at the address in a vehicle," a Victoria Police spokeswoman

said. "Two offenders have forced entry to the Centre Road house approximately 1.30 pm".

Several police officers attended where crime scene tape was set up around the perimeter of the property.

Neighbour Ron Caulfield said he and his wife were at home when they saw a police car activating its lights before at least three ambulances arrived shortly after.

"Police have spoken to us but we didn't know what it was," Mr Caulfield said. "We saw the car go past with the lights on and thought they've grabbed somebody for speeding".

Other neighbours described the area as usually quiet and didn't know what was unfolding on Centre road until police knocked on their doors.

A neighbour, who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation, said there had been different people living at the house where police had established a crime scene.

"I don't know the people that live there," the resident said. "For a while it was completely vacant about a year ago."

The resident, who has CCTV cameras installed at his home, said the neighbourhood was "very quiet" and he "loved" the area.

"You don't really hear much around here ...

‘One-man crime wave’ - violent agg burglar jailed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man has pleaded guilty to a "one-man crime wave" across the East and South East suburbs.

Eddson Bhachi, 33,had stolen wallets, a car and keys during a burglary and two aggravated burglaries in Doncaster East, Burwood, Burwood East and Narre Warren in 2018 and 2019,

Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

Bhachi had assaulted occupants during an aggravated home burglary in Fleetwood Drive, Narre Warren on 13 November.

He stole $3000 of goods, including two laptops, a phone and keys, a foreign passport, ID cards, bank cards and fuel cards as well as tried to steal the home's car, the court heard.

Bhachi was also charged with failing to appear on bail, criminal damage and possession of cannabis.

Magistrate Tony Burns said Bhachi's "despicable conduct" had "invaded people's spaces and homes".

Mr Burns noted that aside from being a "one-man crime wave", Bhachi was also re-

sponsible for caring for a severely disabled child.

He also took into account Bhachi's guilty plea and relative lack of criminal history.

Bhachi was jailed for six months, including 83 days in pre-sentence custody. His term will be followed by a two-year supervised corrections order including drug rehab.

Casey backs fires appeal

By Brendan Rees Casey Council has announced it will donate $20,000 to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and pledged "provide the greatest flexibility" to bushfire affected communities.

At their 21 January meeting, Councillors voted to donate the money as well as partnering with the Casey arts community to host a fundraising event at Bunjil Place - which will be advertised on the City of Casey website.

Council will also waive community facility hire fees for community groups staging fundraising events to raise money for those affected by the 2019-20 Victorian bushfires.

Casey Council's has been called upon to help communities in East Gippsland and the state's North East.

In January, council staff was deployed to the emergency relief centre at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex where they worked around the clock providing shelter, food, water, telecommunications and tracing services.

Doveton's Myana Farm has joined forced with Animal Rescue Freecycle to help injured wildlife. They are looking for donations of fabrics, yarn, marsupial pouches, nests, joey hanging bags, bat wraps, blankets and first aid supplies.

Mayor Susan Serey said Casey Council was committed to contributing to the long-term recovery of bushfire affected communities, including providing support to relief centres.

"The City of Casey is well-equipped and experienced in providing high-level support to other councils," Cr Serey said.

"I would like to thank the staff but also to those who have contributed by donating items or financial support but also the volunteers across the city, state, and nation to support our bush affected neighbours."

Pool owners cop inflation costs The above is being caused by all levels of Government!

The local council at the instruction of our State Government has, belatedly, decided to take action to ensure pool safety in the home environment! However they have decided that the 8000 pool owners in the Casey area can pay $632,000 to register what the Casey Council should already know about.

Then pool owners will have to supply an inspection certificate by a licensed building inspector at approximately $375 each for the 8000 Casey located pools which is about $3,000,000! Should your pool be non-compliant here will be a further fee for re-inspection once remediation work is completed! Once that is done you will have issued by the Council a certificate at $31.84 each, equalling $254720!

If you have to have a remediation inspection done they are approximately $200 each.

So at a minimum it will cost pool owners $632,000 plus $3,000,000 plus $254,720 totalling $$3,886,720.00 which the State Government has decided ratepayers can pay. The services we pay our local councils for are not being supplied!

I appreciate that having even one child drown is to be avoided at all costs however the pool next to me which was Council approved (so they know of its existence) has not had any inspections carried out in the last eight years

Bloodied in brawl

By Brendan Rees A brave woman has told of the moment she tried to break up a brawl at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre where a teen was left bloodied in what's believed to be a scissor attack.

Amanda, who asked her surname not to be published, was shopping at Myer about 4pm on Saturday, 1 February, when a row broke out between a group of teenage boys.

Amanda said she tried to intervene by putting her hand out in front of one of the boys, telling him to "just stop it, just stop it" while another shopper shouted at the boys to get out.

According to Amanda, the boy she tried to hold back "kept antagonising" the group and "going back" to help his brother.

"What they were after them for I don't know," she said.

At this stage, the fight between the group aged between 15 and 18 years of age, had escalated and spilled outside near the Shingle Inn cafe and Amanda called police.

"The next minute I saw them picking the sign up from Myer, and running at the boy

with the sign, and then things were getting smashed," Amanda said.

"One of the Myer staff said: 'One of the boys' been stabbed in the neck with scissors'.

"Someone else shouted: 'He's been stabbed'," Amanda said, as dozens of onlookers videoed the fallout of the incident before police arrived and taped off the area.

Amanda said one of the boys injured in the fight was given first aid by Myer staff members.

"They're trying to mop him up and there's blood all over the floor," she said.

Victoria Police spokesman Sergeant Cameron Scott said two boys had been charged "following an assault at a Narre Warren shopping centre".

He said a 15-year-old from Dandenong was charged with affray and intentionally cause injury and was remanded in custody to appear at a children's court at a later date.

The second boy, a 14-year-old from Frankston, was charged with affray and bailed to appear at a children's court later this month.

Police could not confirm whether a pair of scissors had been used in the assault, saying

the "injuries are non-life threatening".

Paramedics treated a teenage boy at the scene and taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition with an upper body injury.

Sunil, a staff member at Shingle Inn, said he was in the kitchen when he heard screaming and fighting.

He said panic-stricken customers stayed in the cafe between half-an-hour and 45 minutes.

"It is very dangerous these young people fighting," he said. "I've got the metal signs outside - they may use sometime. I have seen on the news what happens".

Gembrook MP Brad Battin said violence at the shopping centre was "only increasing" and called on the State Government to take action.

"The safety of staff and shoppers should not be placed under risk," he said.

"Daniel Andrews must act immediately in providing the adequate resources to assist police in in restoring a safe shopping and work environment for Casey residents."

Westfield's Scentre group said the incident was reported to police and could not comment any further.

Quadruple trouble as twins take first class

By Brendan Rees It was case of teachers seeing double when four sets of twins walked through the gates for their first day of class at Cranbourne South Primary School.

Nellie and Lena, Isaac and Maddix, Maddison and Olivia, Gemma and Jaxon - all had their sibling to make their first day of school that little bit easier.

The twins - two of which are identical - were joined by 55 preps who took their first steps to school on Thursday 30 January.

Principal Monique Corcoran said there were some tears as parents farewelled their children.

"We had one screamer," she laughed.

But with the school's transition preparation program, which ran at the end of last year, this would facilitate a happy and exciting start to school life for new students, Ms Corcoran said.

And despite new school's opening closeby, Ms Corcoran was quick to point out Cranbourne South Primary continued to be "thriving community orientated" school.

"We are the school of choice; people travel to us," she said.

And when it comes to remembering names, Ms Corcoran says ""finding a little quirk" always helped.

"You do get it right pretty quickly."

Michelle Hughes, mother of twin boys Isaac and Maddix, said she was excited for them but a little sad too.

Michelle said the pair, known as the 'twinadoes,' had embraced their first day and look forward to making new friends.

When they grow up, Michelle said Isaac wants to be a "tradie like daddy" and Maddix wants to drive an excavator.

New $20.8m school open

By Brendan Rees Hundreds of students have stepped through the gates of a brand new school in Clyde North for the first time.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale officially opened the new $20.8 million Grayling Primary School, welcoming its first students, from Prep to Year 6, on Friday 31 January.

The school includes administration buildings, classrooms, and a state-of-the-art performing arts and physical education centre with open play space.

The school, which is named after the endangered freshwater fish that is known to inhabit Cardinia Creek, is co-located next to Manna Gum Family and Community Centre, a new integrated children's and community centre allowing local children to make a smooth transition from kindergarten and helping parents ditch the dreaded double drop off.

Grayling Primary is one of 11 new schools opening in 2020 across the state.

During the opening ceremony, little preppies wearing their new school uniform were presented with new library bag and bundle of books to spark the joy of reading, as family and friends watched on. Mr Merlino then led a 'hands up if you know?' with students asking questions about school and student numbers in Victoria.

Mr Merlino said Grayling Primary School was "yet another great example of the school building boom that is happening right across Victoria."

"Whether it's achieving excellence, building a world-class education system or creating opportunities for every Victorian, we're making sure that every student can make the most of school and get the best start in life," he said.

That’s a class act

By Brendan Rees Cranbourne East's newest state school opened this week, with 370 students walking through the doors of Casey Fields Primary School.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards officially opened the new $20.1 million school on Wednesday 29 January, welcoming its first students, who will be in Prep to Year 6.

Casey Fields Primary is one of 11 new schools opening in 2020 across Victoria including Botanic Ridge Primary School.

The school includes a performing arts and physical education building, complete with a competition-grade gymnasium, along with state-of-the-art learning spaces and administration areas.

Wearing their brand new school uniforms, students gathered for a special assembly in the gym where Mr Merlino cut a ribbon to mark the occasion.

The school is co-located next to Livingston Family and Community Centre, allowing local children to make a smooth transition from preschool and helping parents ditch the dreaded double drop off.

Principal Cameron Heath said the new school community was thrilled to be part of a milestone moment.

"The parents and grandparents and family are excited to have a school finally open. Staff and students are settling in well into the new flexible learning spaces," he said.

Mr Merlino said: "Whether it's building a world-class education system or creating opportunities for every Victorian, we're making sure that every student can make the most of school and get the best start in life."

Ms Richards said the school would provide the community with the "first-rate education facilities they deserve."

Man ‘drugged’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has claimed he had been drugged after being charged with trafficking and 'exposing police officers to risk by driving' near Eden Rise shopping centre in Berwick on 27 January, a court has heard.

Karim Hallaby, 29, of Keysborough, had been spotted driving erratically and falling asleep behind the wheel of a Ford sedan about 2pm, police told a Dandenong Magistrates' Court bail hearing.

When two police officers approached, Hallaby drove forward into a light pole.

He then reversed towards the officers and again drove into the same pole, police alleged.

Police chased Hallaby on foot as he ran from the car and crossed Clyde Road. He allegedly resisted arrest in a nearby residential court.

He was taken to Casey Hospital due to his "drug-affected" state, the court heard.

Police claimed they seized methamphetamine, cannabis and prescription drugs as well as stolen number plates from the unregistered Ford.

At the time, Hallaby was on two corrections orders and was an unlicensed driver, the court was told.

Police listed prior offences including "multiple" drug and traffic offences as well as correction-order breach offences.

Hallaby, who represented himself, told the court that he may have been drugged and his car stolen.

"I'm pretty sure there's another person involved who took advantage of me," he said.

"That's not me, that's not my character."

Magistrate Tony Burns noted that the new charges didn't appear "out of character" with "troubling" priors such as illegally possessing a handgun as well as drug-driving.

Mr Burns said Hallaby failed to provide compelling reasons for being released on bail.

Hallaby was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 28 February.

"I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said.

However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times.

"He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled.

During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant.

"We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me."

"Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said.

Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop.

Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene.

Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril".

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder.

He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime.

Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Casey Council has welcomed nearly $5 million in funding for two major community and sporting projects thanks to the State Government's Growing Suburbs Fund.

A $1.5 million grant will go towards the Selandra Rise Active Open Space Community Pavilion Development project in Clyde North while $3.3 million will be injected into the Cranbourne North Active Open Space Reserve in the Tulliallan Estate.

It comes as neighbours of the Tulliallan Estate fought a five year tussle with a developer who planned to build 138 homes on the 6.8 hectare site after reneging on a promise to deliver a sports field.

Council finally reached an agreement with the developer to purchase the land.

Construction of the reserve is valued at $10.81 million with works to starts towards the end of this year.

Funding for the open space reserve includes: A multipurpose pavilion for school and community use Outdoor spaces for recreation, including a district level play space, shared walking and cycling paths and landscaping Sport playing surfaces for school and community use, including three soccer pitches, a cricket oval, cricket nets and associated infrastructure Space for the delivery of programs promoting wellbeing and healthy lifestyles, such as the neighbouring school's partnership with the Melbourne Football Club Works on the Selandra Rise Active Open Space Community Pavilion are expected to start in April and will be delivered as part of a broader recreation reserve project valued at over $9.7 million. Funding of $800,000 for the project has also been provided through the State Government's Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Residents of Tulliallan Community Action Group spokeswoman Rebecca Hyland said the funding was a huge win for the community.

"The whole community got behind this; we had almost a 1000 signatures on the petition," she said.

Ms Hyland thanked the support of Casey Council, Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and all residents who got behind the campaign.Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said she was thrilled the site had been saved, thanking all community members.

"A huge thank you to Bec Hyland who has been working hard to deliver for Tulliallan," she said in a Facebook post.

Model Matt unlucky in love

By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren international model says he hasn't given up his search for love after his starring reality TV role.

Matt Zukowski, 24, tried his luck with romance on Channel Nine's dating reality series, Love Island Australia, which aired in November.

After casting for the role, which he says he had "nothing to lose," he was soon joined by a group of young singles who converged on a luxury villa in Fiji in the hope of finding a partner.

"I was genuine about trying to find someone," he explained.

Matt, who spent the whole six weeks on the island and crowned runner-up, says his "roller coaster journey" saw him coupled with Vanessa Sierra "pretty heavily" but their relationship took a turn.

"She got accused of being fake by people who were coming in like the intruders," he says.

"We had like real arguments all the time.

She ended up being dumped by three of the guys I was close with.

"I was single and then like five new girls came in; none of them liked me.

"It was pretty full on."

Matt, who has walked the catwalks of Milan and London and is also a pro wrestler,

"We had no sense of time," he says. "You're constantly on edge about what's going to happen next."

Matt later coupled with Cartier Surjan, 19, but their lives were "a lot different" after filming and they called time on their relationship.

But Matt contends he had no regrets being on the series: "I was myself the whole time; I think I was transparent and showed who I was."

Meanwhile, Matt says he's excited about his next biggest wrestling gig at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South in March.

By Brendan Rees A Berwick resident is calling on Casey Council to take action along notorious Kangan Drive which he says has become "dreadful" at peak hour times.

Graham Jackson said traffic was worsening and took aim at council for their "poor engineering" and "illegal traffic movements" at the Soldiers Road, Bryn Mawr Boulevard and Kangan Drive roundabout.

Mr Jackson says the typography at the roundabout caused drivers on Kangan Drive "to come to a stop, or near a stop, before they are able to assess the traffic on their right".

He said drivers approaching south on Soldiers Road "bullied their way through" the roundabout by seeking "an uninterrupted passage through the roundabout by approaching at speed".

He also said residents of a retirement village on Kangan Drive were restricted in their ability to enter or leave the village because of peak hour congestion.

ing his concerns but was disappointed in their response in what he says council had been "doing, or has done" but "nothing" of what they "intend to do with the problem" of traffic congestion.

Casey Council's manager of city and asset planning Keri New said council continued to advocate on behalf of the community to reduce congestion in Casey - which has resulted in the State and Federal Governments provided over $1 billion in transport commitments.

"We are aware of the traffic issues along these roads in Berwick, and look forward to seeing improved outcomes for the local community as a result of funding commitments from the State Government," Ms New said.

"Several of these commitments will improve traffic safety and flow for commuters and residents, including improving the transport network efficiency along Soldiers Road and Kangan Drive.

To improve traffic flow on Kangan Drive approaching the Clyde Road intersection, Ms New said council officers have installed peak time no stopping restrictions to "fully utilise

the two travel lanes for vehicles approaching the Clyde Road intersection."

In relation to the round-about at the intersection of Kangan Drive and Bryn Mawr Boulevard, council says the sight distance available on all four approaches of this roundabout is in accordance with relevant engineering guidelines.

Ms New said Victoria Police was aware of the illegal traffic movements at this roundabout and based on their risk assessment/ recommendation, the school crossing on Bryn Mawr Boulevard was relocated by a car length to reduce incidents of vehicles inadvertently blocking the circulation roadway.

These works were undertaken prior to term two 2018.

"Although arterial roads and public transport planning are not directly under City of Casey's jurisdiction, Council will continue to be relentless in advocating on behalf of its community to improve congestion in Casey," Ms New said.

It may be a long wait for compensation for a Gumtree scam victim in Queensland.

She had been scammed by Nathan Russell, 34, who posted an ad to sell a set of Holden wheels for $800 in April 2018, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

Since then, the victim has neither received the wheels nor her money back.

Meanwhile that month, Russell was taken into custody on another matter, and released in January 2019.

Russell pleaded guilty to a deception charge as well as breaching his community correction order via a prison video link at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 4 February.

Police applied for a restitution order for $800 against Russell but it may have to wait until 2026 at the earliest.

Last November, he was sentenced in the County Court of Victoria to eight years and nine months in jail for attempted aggravated carjacking and several counts of reckless conduct endangering life.

It was described by County Court judge Michael McInerney as “the worst driving I have observed in my time as a Judge of over 20 years”.

“How no one was killed is an absolute miracle.”

Using the ‘totality’ principle, a defence lawyer argued for a concurrent sentence on the grounds of Russell’s already “excessive” jail stint. He won’t be eligible for parole until 2026.

It was unlikely that the offences would have extended his 276-days in custody in 2018-19, the lawyer argued.

“Any sentence would delay his availability for parole.”

The lawyer said the $800 restitution order would “bring undue hardship.”

Magistrate Doug Bolster said he wasn’t swayed by the ‘hardship’ argument. “He’s the one who put himself in that situation.”

But he noted that Russell was already serving a “significant sentence”.

Russell, a former mechanic, suffered posttraumatic stress disorder due to being stabbed during an aggravated burglary, the court heard.

He was also diagnosed with anxiety, depression and ADHD, his lawyer said.

Russell had “battled” with drug use such as ice, cannabis and speed since he was 15 years old.

Mr Bolger jailed Russell for five months, served concurrently with his current prison stint. He was convicted and fined $1000.

Super Bowl fans tune in

By Brendan Rees It may have been 8.30 in the morning but NFL fans descended in their numbers at Narre Warren's Sporting Globe Bar and Grill, engrossed by the Super Bowl spectacle.

And to celebrate in style, the venue hosted a

street party for Aussies to indulge in America's favourite past time on Monday 3 February.

There was an exclusive all-American food menu featuring burritos, burgers, Buffalo wings and Budweiser buckets available.

The bar opened at 8am, live streaming the big game from 10.30am onwards on all

of the screens.

It may not be Australian, but the Super Bowl is becoming a must-see in Aussie households with many of them searching for the perfect viewing sport.

Across Australia, more than 380,000 people tuned in to watch the game and half-time per-

formance while 25,000 bottles of Budweiser almost 30,000 wings were consumed at The Sporting Globe locations nationwide.

Fans at the Narre Warren venue donned football jerseys behind buckets of beers and towers of wings to watch the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers.

Push to seal dusty roads

By Brendan Rees Devon Meadows residents have called for action on unsealed roads with many frustrated with their deteriorating conditions.

Two petitions have been tabled at Casey Council's meeting - asking council to seal Meadow Road and Olive Road.Residents have cited problems such as ruts and potholes, and vehicles whipping up dirt and dust.

Head petitioner Bert Mallett said he hoped the roads would be sealed without delay.

The petition also called on council to organise a public meeting to discuss the construction of the roads and whether a special charge scheme would be involved - which would split the costs of the project between council and ratepayers.

"It costs a lot more to maintain the roads (while unsealed)," Mr Mallet said.

Most people, he said, were "over the dust and the mud and their cars constantly being dirty."

Last September, he lodged a petition of 19 signatures asking council to seal Worthing Road but hadn't "heard anything yet."

He said a meeting with council was organised in December regarding Worthing Road but had been postponed to January.

Mr Mallet said he would also try to seek the support of Federal MP for Holt Anthony Byrne for the road projects.

Casey Council manager of city design and

construction Trevor Griffin said Meadow Road, Olive Road and Worthing Road in Devon Meadows could be subsidised through a special charge scheme if this was supported by a majority of residents.

"At the Council Meeting on 17 December, council released a draft revised Special Charge Scheme Policy for public consultation. The community will be invited to review and provide feedback on this draft policy in the coming week via Casey Conversations," Mr Griffen said.

"As part of this draft revised policy, council is proposing to now contribute 25 per cent towards the sealing of local residential roads, where previously the total cost was borne by residents.

"The petition for the sealing of Meadow Road, Olive Road and Worthing Road will be considered following the adoption of the draft revised Special Charge Scheme Policy."

New season, same intent

By Tyler Lewis Riley Baldi was one of the many unlucky 2019 AFL draft hopefuls, but after demonstrating his raw talent in the early stages of the year for the Casey Demons, he is on his way to a prolific career at an elite level.

In 2019, Baldi represented Vic Country, was selected to compete at the National Combine and was one of the Gippsland Power's most influential assets at NAB League level, but in late November, his name wasn't heard.

"Missing the first half of the season, probably the first five games probably hurt a little bit," he told the Star News.

"But in saying I felt that I was a bit fresher coming into the back end of the season and able to perform.

"I would say I had a pretty consistent year and I felt like I developed from the year before.

"I always knew I was going to be on the fringe of getting picked up or not, I wasn't confident, but I wouldn't say I wasn't confident - I was just taking everything in my stride, trying to relish the opportunities."

While missing out on the draft was something that disappointed him, Baldi was just as happy to hear his close friends Brock Smith and Sam Flanders' name called as much as his own.

"Once I didn't hear my name, it was an upsetting time; you sort of have a hope the next day it might happen," he said.

"But it made it a lot easier seeing a few of my mates getting picked up along the way, being able to celebrate them over the two to three

days was a good thing.

"I guess there is a bit of envy there if anything, but I was stoked for them to go, I couldn't be happier they all went and if I had my time over again, I would put them still going (on to AFL level).

"They got there opportunity, hopefully I can get there one day.

"For it to not happen was upsetting, but at the same time, I went over to Sam (Flanders) and Brock's (Smith) house and got around them, I was just as excited for them as they were."

Baldi has put pen to paper down at Casey Fields and is expected to don the red and blue threads early in the season in what is a mini accomplishment in an otherwise enormous year for Baldi who has many goals he wants to

check off this season.

"Building up my speed was one of the main things I didn't get drafted for," he said.

"Showing them I can I compete against the bigger bodies, the men that play VFL. To go through that, obviously is sad, but I like to use it as motivation as well to keep pushing myself to try and get to the next level.

"I wouldn't say I feel as though it is a redemption year, but it is a motivation for me to prove people wrong, I use that as motivation to show I can do it."

The Demons take on the Frankston Dolphins in the opening round on Saturday 4 April, a match Baldi will be pushing to be a part of.

By Tyler Lewis The Southside Flyers couldn't have asked for a better performance on the eve of the of the WNBL post season on Saturday.

The Flyers came into their last regular season game with top spot and a home semi-final already in their grasp, but Cheryl Chambers' side wasn't complacent in the match against the Flames on Saturday night.

Sara Blicavs was on fire for the Flyers, dropping 18 points at an extraordinary 100 per cent from the floor.

While Blicavs spent just under 20 minutes on the hardwood, she also brought down eight boards and passed off seven assists in a dominant display before her trip to France with the Opals.

In the ultimate show of depth, Chambers looked upon her bench to get the job done in the second half, allowing Blicavs and star import Mercedes Russell to sit out the remainder of the game, to which they obliged, putting up 21 points as the second string of Flyers.

Like they did in many games this season, Southside took control in the early stages and

didn't hand over the lead for the entire contest.

Southside coasted to another victory to finish the home and away season, defeating the Sydney Uni Flames 78-61, improving the Flyers' record to 17-4 before the playoffs.

Coach Chambers will join her star player Blicavs in France, assisting Opals head coach Sandy Brondello.

Southside assistant coach Belinda Snell will be directing the momentous Flyers unit for the week off before their first final against the Adelaide Lightning.

The Flyers have collected the points in two of their three encounters with the Lightning this season, including a powerful victory only weeks ago on the Australia Day weekend.

The game will tip off on Tuesday 18 February at 7.30pm at Dandenong Stadium. Game two will be in Adelaide on the 22nd and, if required, game three will be back at home for the Flyers as they look to cap off what has been an already memorable season.

The miserable weather on Saturday saw most bowls abandoned. Narre’s Division 3 (at Cardinia Waters) and divisions 4 and 5 sides at Fountain Gate were all washed out. Division 7 travelled to play Mordialloc/Parkdale in the rain and completed the minimum ends for a game and the win. Laurie Baker's group won 24-15 and they were supported with wins by Darren Moore, Leo McGeary, Brian Fraser and John Uren (14-9) and Len O’Brien, Rose Rasmussen, Graham Peterson and Andy Tobler (16-13). Rudi Oost, Jeanette Cox, Diane Peterson and Wayne Grimsel just missed out, going down 11-13.

This week Bowls Victoria released the formats for the upcoming Under 18 State Championships. This will be played at Fountain Gate (Narre Warren) from 30 March to 2 April.

The first day (Monday) will be the triples, with boys singles and girls pairs on Tuesday.

Wednesday will see the mixed pairs and the final day will have the girls singles and boys pairs.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Last time Cranbourne and Carrum met, the weather was a great test for both sides with Carrum winning in the wind and rain.

This time around, playing at home, the rain was again a factor but there was no wind and Cranbourne won comfortably by 38 shots with three rinks up and one draw.

It was a great win against Berwick for the second side at home by 27 shots - keeping them in the hunt for finals contention.

Meanwhile, in midweek bowls, skip Freda Farrall continued her great form with another 18-shot win, playing against Churchill Waverley to round off an exciting round of bowls for Cranbourne during the week.

SIDE 1, DIVISION 2 That winning feeling continued for team Lyn Quigg, Peter Elgar, Ian Barrenger and Allan Cook with 15 shots up and Mark Bland, John McKenna, Neil Drummond and Shane Morrison joining in with 15 shots up as well against Carrum at home in wet conditions.

Skip Mark Bland mentioned after the game that he was happy with the consistent effort of his crew, who all played well in the conditions.

Cranbourne 98 (17 points) defeated Carrum 60 (1 point).

SIDE 2, DIVISION 2 Cranbourne needed to win against Berwick to stay in contention for the finals and they certainly delivered with a 27-shot margin.

The outstanding rink of the day was skip Tony Collins, who had an armchair ride by his team of Jim Williams, Brian Caddell and Greg Jones.

Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Berwick 57 (2 points).
