We lose millions By Brendan Rees Casey punters missed the jackpot last year with the latest figures showing they lost $131.9 million to electronic gaming machines - which has been labelled a "shame" and "breaking families." The latest figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed the Berwick Springs Hotel, which is owned by Zagames, was one of the worst in the state with players losing $19.6 million. Hampton Park Tavern recorded $13.7 million while $6.5 million was spent at Amstel Club in Cranbourne. Kerry Jose of the Cranbourne Salvation Army branch said gambling related harm was "without a doubt" impacting household budgets. "Once they start, they keep going until there's nothing left ... a lot don't see it as a problem," she said. She said many people spent all their rent money on pokies and got behind with other bills. "They've got to come to services like us to give them food to survive," Ms Jose said. The losses for the year were slightly lower than $134 million in losses recorded in 2018. And almost $12 million in losses were recorded in Casey in December - up $279,643.15 on the December 2018 figures. Casey Council was contacted for comment but due to deadline, was unable to respond in time. However, last year Casey Council said it wanted the State Government to extend a cap on the number of electronic gaming machines (EGM) on the municipality, adding a city-wide cap would "provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipality." Bad Bets Australia spokesman Rowan Winn said he was the problem was not being addressed, with the total losses representing "pain and suffering." "That fact is the figures aren't going down," Mr Wenn said.
He said he was astounded the gambling industry was regulated by the State Government and yet "it's allowed to do this level of harm." "It's not good enough for politicians to say 'it's just money that's lost.' "If this isn't an alarm bell I don't know what is. The impact of these figures is getting less and less because we're getting used to it but we should be outraged by this," Mr Wenn said. Alliance for Gambling Reform director and spokesman Tim Costello said poker machines led to the loss of "much more than money" - and was especially concerned about a proposal by Castellos for 100 poker machines in Clyde North. "I'm pleased to hear the Casey Council has decided to lodge an objection to the application with the Commission," Mr Costello said. He said if the additional pokies machines were approved, it "would undoubtedly" increase gambling harm in Casey and further damage the local economy. "Estimates are that those 100 machines could take an extra $4 million from the Casey community in their first year of operation alone," Mr Costello said. Mr Costello said on average, Victorian adults lost $530 on the pokies in 2019. "When you consider the majority of Victorians don't gamble on poker machines, that means there are some people losing tens of thousands of dollars a year to these dreaded machines of addiction," he said. "Pokies dens are designed to fleece people regardless of socio-economic background or geography."

Scammer faces jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A "despicable" scam-artist who ripped off new arrivals for thousands of dollars has been given a stern ultimatum. David Douse, 65, of Narre Warren, was ordered by Dandenong magistrate Tony Burns to pay back the owed $23,200 within nine months. "It's repaid in full or he goes to jail," Mr Burns said at the hearing on 21 January. Douse pleaded guilty to two counts of deception, in which he hounded his two victims for more than $27,000 to help apply for their family members' migrations. In 2008, he promised a victim in Dandenong that his brother worked in immigration and he could help migrate the victim's family from Afghanistan for $22,000. Under duress from Douse, the victim paid $13,000 in instalments over the next two months. Douse then informed him he couldn't help anymore and would pay the money back. Despite repeated pleas from the victim, Douse repaid just $1000 by 2012. His phone number was then disconnected.
In 2011, Douse met a victim in Springvale, promising to fast-track a working visa for her cousin in India at a cost of $15,000. Over five months, he was paid $16,200 in instalments - including $1200 for a purported flight to India to apply for the visa. The victim discovered that Douse had instead flown to England. Two weeks later, he advised that his attempts to help had failed and promised to repay the money. He still owed the victim $11,200, with his last repayment in 2012. In a police interview in August, Douse said he had fled overseas between 2013 and 2015 due to being violently threatened by the second victim. He claimed to have had a "brief sexual relationship" with her. When asked if he had experience in obtaining visas, he gave no comment. Douse told police that he had been unable to afford repaying the victims in full. His lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates' Court that Douse had suffered financial problems, including a failed bathroom renovation business. The unemployed man was currently living
off NewStart and instalments from an inheritance, the court heard. Douse's sister had limited the inheritance to monthly £800 installments, due to his impulsiveness, the court heard. The lawyer said it would be "incredibly difficult" for Douse to repay the amount within nine months. Magistrate Burns said Douse was a "despicable charlatan" who "abused the trust of vulnerable people". "Your conduct is to be absolutely condemned." Douse's diagnosed impulsivity and hypermania didn't reduce his moral culpability, Mr Burns said. He noted Douse had been jailed in the past for criminal deceptions. "You've gone on your merry way in deceiving people once again." Douse was advised to get a loan or to ask his sister to open the "purse-strings" to his inheritance to meet the 19 October deadline. If the repayments were met, Douse would be sentenced to a community corrections order, Mr Burns said. Douse will appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 19 October.
Car crashes into home, driver flees scene By Brendan Rees A woman has been arrested after a car ploughed into a Clyde North home during the early hours of Thursday, 23 January. It is understood the female driver crashed into a Moorgate Road house about 12.10am before fleeing the scene in her vehicle. "The car was located abandoned nearby a short time later, before the woman was located and arrested in Wenn St about 1am," a Victoria Police spokesman said. She is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries. No one was injured during the incident and the investigation into the exact circumstances remains ongoing.

Two named for planning committee Casey Council has appointed two independent members to its newly formed Special Planning Committee. It comes as councillors voted to relinquish their rights to vote on planning applications at a special council meeting on New Year's Eve after public confidence had been obliterated following the IBAC corruption allegations. This was followed by an expression of interest process through which 10 applications were received for the balance of the Special Committee membership. Independent committee members were required to have relevant planning, governance and probity experience. The Special Committee will decide on planning applications and process planning scheme amendments on Council's behalf while the IBAC investigation is underway. The two appointees are: David Gibb Mr Gibb held the position as Chairman on the Municipal Association Victoria (MAV) Melbourne 2030 Reference Group from 2004-2008. The councillor reference group was instrumental in ensuring the best possible outcomes were considered as part of the development of the Melbourne 2030 Framework, focused on managing urban growth and development across metropolitan Melbourne. Mr Gibb was also a councillor for almost 20 years at Mornington Peninsula Shire, twice holding the position of mayor. As a Member of Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) and a Fellow of the Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association (VPELA), Mr Gibb has built a considerable knowledge of the Victorian planning provisions. He is also a member of the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF), and member of the VFF Land Management planning committee. Mr Gibb holds a Bachelor of Science (biochemistry and genetics) and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). Bernard Carr Mr Carr has been a member of the Victorian Bar since 2001, and practises as a barrister. Prior to joining the Victorian Bar he was a solicitor for five years, and a consulting civil engineer for 14 years. In 2016, Mr Carr was appointed a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia. Mr Carr holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Laws. He is a qualified Mediator and Arbitrator, with experience in both these areas. He also has experience in the area of Expert Determination, having been appointed by parties as the independent assessor of disputes in alternative dispute resolution processes. Through his experience, Mr Carr will bring a sound understanding of planning law, regulations and the planning process to the Special Committee.

Wearing a ceremonial garb, City of Casey's town crier led a parade featuring members of the Australian Air Force Cadets - 403 Squadron of Beaconsfield, the Berwick Pipers, Casey mayor Susan Serey and Berwick Australia Day ambassador Andrew Asten. Following a flag raising ceremony and a rendition of the Australian anthem sung by 17-year-old Dhee Wickramasinghe of Berwick, the mayor welcomed the crowds during a presentation at the rotunda. "It's great to see so many people gathered for what is always a fantastic family and community event," Cr Serey said. "Australia Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be Australian, the journey taken to this point and the aspirations we share for our future. "As the daughter of migrants I take great pride in what Australia has become and the aspirations we all share for an even better future. The popular song 'I am Australian' opened with the line 'we are one but we are many' and characterises the sentiment of many of us who have indeed have come from all the layers on Earth. In response to my question to Casey mayor Susan Serey and deputy mayor Rex Flannery about why hasn't the City of Casey declared a climate emergency? Because this city is in a designated high risk area - Casey's governance office replies that the question of whether to declare a Climate Change emergency will be referred to Casey council's conservation advisory committee for advice. Well how about seeking advice from Casey's residents and ratepayers? Should Casey Council really be referring a decision about Climate Change to a council committee, only, when Climate Change is a complex phenomenon impacting all Casey residents and when Casey council has had its legitimacy compromised by the independent body against corruption? Why can't Casey residents have a say in such an important decision please? I believe Casey council and its governance office may be confused about conservation which is about protecting existing green space and old buildings- as distinct from Climate Change - which is about dealing with the underlying causes behind global warming and increasing extreme weather events. Funny that! IBAC hearings have been widely reported with extensive testimony recounted on the numerous questionable activities of persons directly connected to Casey Council. Yet Casey councillors seem to have their heads in the sand. Cr Flannery has even stated that the community has become the 'judge, jury and hang
man', are 'jumping the gun' and any conflict of interest has only 'been alleged'. Does he think we, the ratepayers, are uninformed? When comparable misbehaviours have been identified in other reputable organisations, those responsible have been required to step down until all questionable activities have been examined. She organises doctor and referral appointments for those struggling on their own or facing red tape with the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA). On 26 January, the Berwick resident was recognised with a Medial of the Order of Australia for her service to veterans and their families. When told of her honour, Ms Anderson said it came unexpected but was truly humbled. "When I got the letter I didn't even know what it was. I was like 'Oh my God'. It came out of the blue," she said. Ms Anderson explained her motivation to help veterans began when her husband, a former Navy electrician, experienced unnecessary delays with medical records and complications through his claim for loss of earnings. Charlie, who served in the Gulf War as a 20-year-old, became quite ill when he returned home years later, which was diagnosed as 'Gulf War illness' - a cluster of medically unexplained chronic symptoms. When his mental health declined Ms Anderson said this was a "trigger" for her to step in and help - not only for husband but for other veterans too. She began as an administrator of a Facebook group called Gulf War Veterans Facebook Group and Advisory Group and the Department of Veterans Affairs Entitlements Facebook Group. She also co-founded the United Younger Veterans Facebook page. "It turned out to be a catalyst for getting all veterans together, but not only veterans; advocates - people who look after veterans," she

A former drama teacher, who runs a dance school with her sister Suzie Ryrie at Suzie Ryrie School of Dance in Berwick, Ms Anderson volunteers her time with the Australian Peace-
keeper and Peacemaker Association and is on the welfare committee of the Berwick RSL. Among a list of giving, she's also a member of the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Round Table; the Place-Based Suicide Prevention Trials Advisory Group; and the Australian Gulf War Veterans Association.

Doctor ‘caught off guard’ By Mitchell Clarke

A prominent Berwick doctor has been recognised for his remarkable contribution towards community health. Dr. Wesley Jame admits he was "caught off guard" when he was told he had received an OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia). "It's a nice surprise and I'm very proud, but I think the nicest thing is the recognition for the organisations I've worked with and the important role they have in the community," Dr. Jame said. The Berwick local is the principal practitioner of the 125-year-old Berwick Medical Centre, where he's worked since 1978.
In that time, Dr. Jame has become a recognisable face in the community and treated three and up to five generations of some families. He's built up an impressive resume within the health sector and is widely recognised as a driving force behind the inception of Casey Hospital and St John of God Hospital. "It was basically a 12-year journey which led to the two hospitals we now see in Berwick," Dr. Jame said. "There were a lot of people on Spring Street that thought that wasn't necessarily appropriate." He recognised the south east was a significant growth corridor and knew the existing Berwick Hospital wouldn't be enough to keep up with demand. During his 21-year stint on the hospital board, Dr. Jame saw the hospital out of a $1.6 million debt through business management and also witnessed the amalgamation with St John of God healthcare. But it took a decade of speaking with ministers and lobbying for Casey Hospital, until he was able to watch that project come to fruition in 2006. "I knew there'd be a lot of growth here and our community knew that was going to happen, but unlike most health developments which tend to happen after the population explodes, this actually happened as the population explosion was occurring," he said. Dr. Jame reflected on a "colour bond moment" after visiting a patient in terminal care at Casey Hospital. "I was standing in the sun at the entrance of Casey Hospital looking over at St John of God, which had just been completed at this stage, and I thought to myself 'this is actually quite a good achievement'," he said. "Having two hospitals functioning side by side in coordination and covering all branches

He acknowledges that without the two hospitals, it'd be a "pretty disastrous" situation. But the resume doesn't end there. Dr. Jame has been passionate in working to improve the welfare of children and families. In 1981, he joined the board of Melbourne Family Care Organisation where he served as vice-president for three years until the organisation became known as Family Action. There, he served as president for five years until the organisation amalgamated with two others to form OzChild. He was chair of the amalgamation steering committee and then inaugural president from 1993 until 1995.
He served on the board of South East Palliative Care for 12 years and was chair of the organisation for four years. He also found time to contribute to the introduction of computers into general practice over a 32 year period. His practice was the first to download pathology and radiology results electronically in Victoria. But despite his impressive career, Dr. Jame said his beloved wife Lesley, who is also a GP and practice co-owner, deserves much of the credit. "I'm often running around and doing a lot of other things but she's always been there to pick up the pieces and managed to keep family life together," he explained. The couple, who have three adult children, are currently finding the time to work part time and enjoy life as grandparents. "At the moment it's all about seeing the world through a child's eye," he laughed. "I've got six grandsons to watch, grow up and play with and of course, they don't know what their grandfather does. "I'm looking forward to winding back further and working towards retirement although I don't see myself fully retiring just yet." 12437046-CG05-20

Lilian gets Aussie honour By Brendan Rees A dedication to helping others in need has earned well-respected former nurse Lilian Leonard an Australia Day honour. The Pearcedale resident was awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for service to community health. The former registered division one nurse said the award came as a "surprise". "It came as an email and I was going to get rid of it as junk," she laughed, "and then I saw the insignia on top." "Very humbling because I'm just an ordinary person," the great-grandmother said. It's not the first time Lilian has been recognised for her work either. In 1993, she was the recipient of an Advance Australia Foundation Award. Born in Kolkata, India, Lilian's family came to Australia in 1951 when she was aged 13. The family lived in Oakleigh and Lilian graduated from the Melbourne School of Nursing in 1959. Following marriage and a family of four children, Lilian started a nursing at Cabrini Hospital. It was here that she met surgeon Sir Edward Hughes who sponsored her training in stomal therapy at the Mayfield Centre in 1979. Lilian said stomal therapy - a surgical procedure which results in a section of the bowel being brought to the surface of the abdominal wall - is "something not really talked about and yet in Australia we have 44,000 people that wear a bag." "I worked at Cabrini for 15 years but I thought I had been in the private sector too long so I moved to PANCH, a large public hospital in Preston. "PANCH was a wonderful experience because there was a big ethnic community. A lot of people couldn't speak English and they were very isolated," she said. During this time Lilian attended several
overseas conferences on stoma care and worked in hospitals both in Oslo, Norway and in London. In 1987 she set up an Ostomy Support group at PANCH- which met once a month for patients. "I got so much out of it - so much support and love," she said. But then came a question from a young person who said: "'Lilian, it's really nice to come along to these meetings but there's nothing for young people'," Lilian said. So Lilian placed an advert in the Preston Times in 1989 inviting young ostomates to a gathering at PANCH. This led to her being the founder of the Young Ostomates United Support Group (YOU) which aims to encourage support and friendship between young people including children with a stoma. "YOU is still going - we have just had our 30th birthday," she said. When PANCH closed in 1998, the hospital moved to the new Northern Hospital but Lilian continued to volunteer her time working with the Ostomy Support Groups. Lilian semi-retired in East Gippsland where she worked part-time at Bairnsdale Hospital for six years setting up stoma and breast cancer support - capping off a "wonderful career."

Casey’s finest honoured By Brendan Rees Casey Council has honoured inspiring residents during an Australia Day Awards ceremony on 26 January. Bassir Qadiri was named the 2020 Casey Citizen of the Year for his advocacy work with Afghan communities, particularly through the Bakhtar Cultural Association. He also promotes multiculturalism, harmony and gender equality through regular music and poetry events. Andrew Pinxt was awarded the Casey Senior Citizen of the Year for his local and overseas philanthropic work. He established a philanthropic trust that supports organisations within the Casey community, and he has been a Rotarian for over 40 years. In addition, he has project-managed international endeavours in Tonga: refurbishing buildings and providing a consistent water supply. Other commitments have included CFA volunteering, serving as an Elder with his church and working tirelessly with parents of adult children with disabilities to develop appropriate residential care options. The Casey Young Citizen of the Year award went to 18-year-old Jessica Vidic for her youthfocussed volunteer and mentoring contributions. Her dedication to karate, the Casey Youth Action Committee, Light FM radio station, Berwick Youth Group and the Doveton Show, demonstrates the variety of her volunteering endeavours. The Casey TAC L2P Driver Mentor Volunteers were announced as the 2020 Casey Community Group of the Year for their work in supporting learner drivers to undertake their 120 hours of driving and work towards gaining their licences. The volunteers provide positive adult role models for the younger drivers in our community. Special mention went to the Berwick Athletic Centre and HPNL (Healesville Phillip Is-

Cathy-Lea Dance Works has expanded its preschool performing arts program to include the Ready Set Dance classes for 2-4 year olds. Ready Set Dance classes run at the CathyLea Studios in Vesper Drive, Narre Warren on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Early Learning specialist Dr Cathie Harrison explains the benefits of the Ready Set Dance Program, describing it as innovative. It is designed specifically to introduce young children to the world of dance. She said in each class, teachers explore aspects of the curriculum through playful approaches which are responsive to the curiosity and imagination of young learners. “The children respond with active and joyful engagement and participation that enables them to practice and refine the skills and ca-
pacities needed for dance,” she said. “At the same time, the children are extended across the various developmental domains of physical, cognitive, language and social development and use learning processes such as attending, remembering and problem solving.” Through regular and sustained participation in Ready Set Dance classes. Dr Harrison said children develop positive dispositions to learning such as enthusiasm, independence, concentration, persistence, co-operation and the three Cs of confidence, coordination, and creativity. “Ready Set Dance offers much to support the play and learning of young children in Australia and beyond,” she said. Rockn’ Suzies dance classes are now in their 17th year teaching at Pakenham and Cranbourne. Pakenham classes are held in the library complex on the corner of John and Henry streets. The Cranbourne class is held at the Senior Citizens Hall on the corner of Codrington Street and the South Gippsland Highway Both nights offer beginner and advanced rock ‘n’ roll classes open to all with no partner required. The program also includes a special class at the end of the night for partners only to learn some of the different styles associated with rock ‘n’ roll including swing, west coast, jive, triples, line and partner dances and cha cha. The classes are designed to be fun and easy to follow for those aged 10 upwards. Dancing is great for fitness, co-ordination, balance and memory, with many people forming great friendships through the classes.

A group of sailors didn't have to worry about treacherous waters when they rolled their mini-yachts into Cranbourne East over the Australia Day long weekend. Forty-four competitors from Australia and New Zealand took to Casey Fields to set their sails during the Australian Blokart Championships four-day regatta held from 25-28 January. The blokarts, a small compact land yacht, which weigh 23 kilograms are made up of stainless steel, three wheels, a mast and a sail. Each kart is about 2m wide - and can reach speeds of up to 95km/h. Competitors, who were electronically timed, raced in two classes including performance and production.

Aus Day awards in Holt By Brendan Rees A huge crowd has poured into Hampton Park for Australia Day celebrations where several members of the community were honoured with awards. Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne presented awards to 28 outstanding individuals, two posthumous awards and seven local organisations for their contribution to our community during the Holt Australia Day Awards ceremony held at Arthur Wren Hall on 26 January. Hundreds gathered on the day which featured a barbecue, live entertainment, face painting, market stalls, jumping castle, community displays and more. The event an opportunity to recognise people like Sally Francis who volunteers with Riding for the Disabled Victoria and Riding for the Disabled Australia which has earned her an Order of Australia Medal for service to people with a disability and horse sports. The Sikh Volunteers Association was also recognised with an award. One of the great
stories to emerge in the wake of the tragedy that unfolded with the bushfires was the quick response for relief provided by the Sikh Volunteers who served hundreds of meals to victims of bushfire affected communities. Another recipient worthy of mention was Cranbourne North resident Rebecca Hyland who led efforts within the Tulliallan Community Action Group for five years to stop the development of a Cranbourne East estate on land earmarked for sports fields, with neighbours saying they were "overjoyed" by the result. Ms Hyland alongside other local residents led a consistent campaign in 2019 with multiple rallies and events to ensure the green space that included soccer and cricket fields was maintained to the benefit of local residents. Mr Byrne said: "I congratulate all those receiving a Holt Australia Day Award for their exemplary community spirit and endless hours of volunteer work making our community a better and safer place to live." Ash’s dream Casey debut By Nick Creely Ashley Chandrasinghe won't be forgetting Saturday's golden day in a hurry. The rising 18-year-old Swan not only became the latest player to make his first XI debut for Casey-South Melbourne, but in the process, produced one of the finest performances of the season, notching up an incredible century against the highly-rated Northcote. It's been an incredible few weeks for the talented leftie, who starred for the Southern Pioneers in the Youth Premier League under 18s, whacking 206 runs at an average of 206. But few would have seen his performance on Saturday coming when he answered the call to open up alongside Luke Wells in the absence of gun batsman Nathan Freitag (attending a wedding). Chandrasinghe showed poise, incredible patience and unflappable concentration to bat from ball one of the day until the second last over, producing an epic 144 off 286 balls, all in which came within 378 minutes. Few would have notched up a century on debut in such impressive fashion, and few have looked so comfortable so quickly. But the innings was exactly what the youngster prides himself on at the crease - wearing the bowlers down, never wavering from his strengths and eventually pouncing on the opposition, regardless of who they are, or where. But it's rare that an opener at such a high level can sustain such concentration at the crease, and especially in his teenage years in the top-flight of Victorian club cricket. And Swans coach Brian Keogh could hardly contain his excitement on Sunday, and after watching stacks of cricket over the journey, believes it was one of the most memorable

really great." Keogh said that the selectors have been discussing the youngster for some time, and were pleased to be able to give him a chance in the red-ball clash. "We talked a lot as a selection group about when to bring him in, and we just felt the twoday game at home in good conditions at Casey would be good," he said. "I was confident he'd do well, but I certainly didn't expect 144 off 280 rocks - it was like he's been out there for five seasons, he just looked so comfortable, he's got a terrific temperament, never gets distracted and just plays each ball on its merits.
"He stays in the moment, and knows his game well - that's the really exciting part, he's got all the foundations but he's got more tricks in his bag." Only last week, the humble Chandrasinghe told Star News Group about his approach in the middle, something that clearly held him in good stead on the weekend. "It's about ball-by-ball concentration, and just trusting my technique and allowing myself to get in and stay there for as long as I can," he said. "If you stay in there, you'll make runs, and that's my mindset when I'm batting. "I've been taught that if nothing's going right for you on the day, that technique is something you can always fall back on, so I try and focus on that a lot." An opportunity for Chandrasinghe to bat with Swans skipper Luke Wells (35) - who combined for 59 with the youngster - was another really pleasing part of the day for Keogh, who said that the influence of the skipper on his young star was crucial. "The opportunity to bat with Wellsy certainly wasn't lost on us, and that was always the plan," he said. "Wellsy looked like he was going to be in for a big one, he was going really well but got out, but he took the pressure off Ash, and the two make a really exciting dynamic for us." The Swans racked up 9/332 by stumps, only a week after a disappointing result against Monash Tigers. Another strong performance on the day was that of keeper batsman Devin Pollock, who crunched 80 after coming in at 5/168 and putting on 157 runs with Chandrasinghe, in a partnership that saw the Swans lift itself into a dominant position.
Youth to pave the way for Casey Demons in the VFL The 2020 VFL season is only around the corner, and after an unusual season 2019, the Casey Demons will look to the excitement of youth to fill its list vacancies this year. The Demons were heavily influenced last season by the injuries its aligned club Melbourne had during the year. But with Melbourne coasting through preseason somewhat unscathed, the positions vacant are one coach Sam Radford hopes to fill with energetic youngsters. While looking for youth, Radford also wants to develop a strong relationship with the Gippsland Power, signing unlucky 2019 NAB League players Ryan Sparkes, Tye Hourigan, Josh Smith and Riley Baldi as Casey players as it is his aim for non-listed players at Casey to improve as footballers and eventually get on an AFL list. “Those four have all signed up,” he said. “They are all training well; Riley is in rehab at the moment, just about to come out. “Ryan Sparkes is training really well, Tye is going well and Josh had an injury preChristmas but he is back going really well at the moment as well, so we have really good Gippsland Power kids. “We have some good kids from the Stingrays and some good Dragons boys too, so we have some really good young talent down at the club.” The Demons had some issues with its forward half in the latter half of the season last year, moving Jack Hutchins up forward to add to the fire power, but with the additions of
youngsters Josh Smith and Corey Ellison, Radford visions a bright future in the forward six for the Demons with some promising young talent over the next few seasons. “Josh is a great size and leads really well,” he said. “We also have Corey Ellison, a young boy who played as a 19-year-old at the Stingrays and Cranbourne. “Corey has really good hands; they are all good young forwards who will need a couple years of developing. “One of the main issues we had last year with our forward line was the injuries Melbourne had to all there forwards, and at the moment they are all up and going, looking really well so that will create a fair bit of depth and competition for spots up forward for us, which will only make us more competitive. “The VFL is getting younger and younger, but we wanted to bring in some young talented players that we see who could be really good players for Casey, that can be good players for us but have the potential to go on and play AFL footy. “That is something we are really proud of at Casey, getting guys drafted, and that is something we want to do, we want to be a team that is obviously successful, but one that is developing players for the AFL.” The Melbourne Storm will be playing a preseason match at Casey Fields in the coming weeks, and after the final match of the year for the Demons had to be moved due to the ground’s condition, concerns have risen over the condition it will be at the pointy end of the season, but Radford assures the surface will be

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 11 It was a round of upsets in the Dandenong District's Turf 1 grade on Saturday, with both St Mary's and North Dandenong stunning likely finalists in a fascinating weekend of cricket. Emotions were high down at Alex Nelson Reserve with Springvale South celebrating club and association legend Craig Slocombe's 300th occasion, but the Saints lifted to another level to stun the Bloods. Batting first, the home side were rolled for 144, with Ryan Quirk (49) the only Blood to find some form with the blade, while with the ball, Ashan Anthony (3/31) picked up vital wickets through the middle to be a menace. The Bloods got off to a strong start in its defence of 144, with seamer Tim Ford (2/20) picking up where he left off last week with two early scalps, but slowly but surely the visitors found its groove, and pushed hard for the win. Skipper Rob Peat (42) lead the charge as the Saints pushed home, with the visitors finding the runs with one over and four wickets to spare. The loss - the club's first since the opening round of the season - however, does not move the Bloods from top spot. Park Oval, like it usually does, saw plenty of runs in a top-four blockbuster between Buckley Ridges and Berwick, but the Bears - off the back of two seasoned champions - inflicted the reigning champs with its second consecutive loss. The Bears were merciless with the bat after being sent in by Bucks skipper David White, racking up an incredible 5/290 off its 40 overs, with Matt Chasemore (91) anchoring the innings superbly like he usually does. With Chasemore set, fellow champ Nathan Pilon - coming out of retirement for the match after an injury to gun keeper Jordan Cleland blasted one of the more incredible knocks seen for years, whacking 10 sixes on his way to 93 not out off 31 deliveries, plundering 26 runs from the final over alone. But with a scary batting outfit, the Bucks were well placed to run the total down. However, a devastating new ball spell from seamer Brendan Rose (4/19) tore the Bucks' top-order apart, with skipper David White falling early and the home side falling to 3/4.
Despite a 41-ball 81 from Bucks champ Daniel 'DJ' Watson, the Bucks fells short, bowled out for 223 in the 34th over, with Cory Bevan (4/56) also outstanding. The win from the visitors keeps them in touch with top-spot, continuing an outstanding run of form from Chasemore's side after Christmas. Down at Reedy Reserve, a whirlwind century from Chandima Abeykoon guided Heinz Southern Districts to a thrilling win against Hallam Kalora Park. The Cobras were in deep trouble after winning the toss and batting, sitting 5/29 when Abeykoon came together with skipper Kaushayla Weeraratne. The pair knocked up a 136-run stand in which Weeraratne (48) fell just shy of a halfcentury, but Abeykoon continued on his merry way, belting four sixes on his way to 101, before being run-out in the closing stages of the innings. Abeykoon's splendid century lifted the home side to a competitive 7/197, with Chris Pereira (4/32) the pick of the bowlers for the Hawks. The Hawks looked to be cruising with Leigh Booth (43) and Ryan Hillard (32) notching up 71 for the first wicket, but the home side worked its way back through a steady stream of wickets to leave the visitors 5/128. Despite the Hawks' desperate attempt to wrestle back control, the Cobras held the home side to 9/171, with Udara Hettige (5/23) absolutely stellar with the ball once again. And in the final game of the round, North Dandenong pulled off one of the upsets of the season against fourth-placed Narre South. The previously winless Maroons have had a tough time of it this season and sit bottom of the Turf 1 table, but gave its supporters and players something to smile about with an outstanding team effort. The Lions lacked its usual fluency with the bat to be rolled out for 171, with seamer Nimesh Kariyawasam (3/36) once again prominent with the ball. The Maroons lost an early wicket in the chase, but it mattered little, with skipper Austin Heldt (53) and the talented Clay McCartney (72 off 48 balls) inflicting the Lions to another tough loss, one that leaves them vulnerable inside the top-four with only a handful of rounds left to play. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Bowling second to skip Ray Travica, Graeme Wood has settled in to playing a major role in Cranbourne's success this year and has now earned the esteemed nickname at the club as 'Mr Smooth' with his reliability and smooth bowling action skills while playing in the top side. Meanwhile in midweek bowls skip Freda Farrall had an outstanding week with an 18 shot win against Hampton Park and followed it up with a 20 shot win on Saturday against Cranbourne RSL. News at the club is that Cranbourne's bushfire fundraiser has now climbed another $2,000 with contributions from local Berwick bowling club who raised $600 to the total and with additional plant sales of $1,400 this now brings the final total to $5,000 with all funds to go to bowling clubs that have been devastated by the recent bushfires.
