Residents across Cardinia are becoming growingly concerned about fuel loads throughout the shire and have called on council to take action. One particular location of concern is the Pakenham Native Grassland Reserve, which is situated between Arden Avenue and Webster Way. Neighbouring residents have voiced their concerns, frustrated at the lack of action being taken to maintain the unkempt grass. "This is such a fire hazard and with so many fires out in East Gippsland you'd think they would want to keep risk down," resident Amy Fussel said. "It's quite long, at least knee high and it's very dry." It's understood the field has been on fire in the past, after catching alight from a cigarette butt, and residents are concerned about the prospect of a repeat incident. "The perimeter outside the fence and also a small strip inside the fence and near the paths get mowed about six times a year, but the main field gets mowed once a year," Ms Fussel said. "I've lived here for nine and a half years and it's getting frustrating." The Gazette understands the reserve includes one of the "rarest native plant communities" within the shire and is declared as "critically endangered". The grassland ecosystem, which is about 1000 metres wide, is predominantly made up of native orchids, herbs, grasses and flowers, and according to Cardinia Shire Council, the protection and enhancement of the natural heritage is of critical importance. "This area is subject to annual maintenance that mimics Indigenous burning and safely reduces fuel loads," council's operations manager Ben Wood said. "Once the grasses have set seed, they are cut and baled. "Regular roadside mowing of the vegetation along the road network around the perimeter of the grasslands also provides a firebreak."

‘High-level’ offence By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Pakenham man with a long history of family violence has been refused bail after a series of violent, jealous threats and break-ins at his expartner’s house. The man faced 20 charges including persistently breaching a full intervention order protecting the ex-partner over nine days in January, a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing was told. In defiance of the order, he’d stayed over at her home, sent obscene texts and threats to kill her, and repeatedly checked there were no other men in her house. The partner felt “physically ill” during the barrage of threats, police told the court. Twice, he broke into her home. On the last occasion, as she called triple-0, he kicked in
the front door. The force splintered the door frame and sent the door lock flying across the room, the court heard. He damaged her fingernail as he snatched away her phone and fled from the house. At the time, the man was already facing two charges of breaching an intervention order protecting the same victim, the court heard. He had been charged on summons and released by police on both occasions. In opposing bail on 21 January, police argued that the man’s “constant and escalating” offending was an unacceptable risk to the expartner’s safety. The man argued that he was financially supporting two children with another ex-partner through long hours of factory work.
“I do not want to lose my house, my kids and my car,” he told the court. Magistrate Tony Burns noted the man’s 11 pages of prior convictions, including breaching an intervention order, indecent assault and stalking as well as weapons and assault offences. The man was a “high level family violence offender” subject to 13 previous reports of family violence to police, and 11 intervention orders. In refusing bail, Mr Burns noted the man’s prior violence and ignoring of intervention orders. The man had failed to show compelling reasons for his release and was an unacceptable risk to the victim’s safety, Mr Burns said. He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 February.

Uber driver attacked in carjacking attempt By Brendan Rees A routine passenger pick-up for Uber driver Mohamed Ashik turned into a nightmare when, he says, he had a knife and gun pointed at him. The 26-year-old ride share driver from Cranbourne, picked up three passengers about 1.50am in Cerbera Bend, Cranbourne on 15 January, before two revealed weapons and made demands for his vehicle.
Mr Ashik left the car and the thugs fled in the keyless car. They allegedly returned a short time later to steal the keys from the victim, striking him on the arm with a baseball bat when he refused. He then handed the keys over and the offenders fled again. Mr Ashik sais he raised the alarm with a passing motorist and called triple-zero. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
"I thought that's my last day of my life," he said. Police say the three offenders, a 17-year-old Narre Warren South teen, 18-year-old Berwick man and 23-year-old man of no fixed permanent address, were arrested about 4am following a search of the area. They have been charged with aggravated carjacking and armed robbery related offences and will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court at a later date.

A dove has been put down after being shot with a blow dart - in an attack animal rescuers have described as a "barbaric act". Nigel Williamson of Nigel's Animal Rescue was called to Ardmore Street in Cranbourne about noon on Saturday 18 January where he found the badly injured dove in a garden. Mr Williamson assessed the dove which he said appeared to have been shot in the stomach with about a 10 inch blow dart - with more than half it protruding through the dove's back. "We then proceeded to capture the bird which we did successfully as it tried to fly away as it was still able to fly," he said. The poor dove was rushed to Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital but sadly had to be euthanised. Mr Williamson said the bird was a turtle dove which was not native to Australia. "If it was a native bird we possibly could have saved it ... we did actually have wildlife people wanting to take it but it was after the event," he said. "Absolutely it's a barbaric act of an innocent animal." Mr Williamson said he believed a "professional dart" had been used which he likened to a hypodermic needle. "It is heartbreaking for sure ... we're just trying to find anybody with information." he added. Mr Williamson reported the incident to Barrie Tapp of the Animal Cruelty Hotline, which he described as a "despicable act." "This appears to be a blow dart and the Cranbourne police is to be notified as a dangerous and illegal weapon has been used and could harm people," he said. The maximum penalty under the Victorian Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is an $82,610 fine or two years imprisonment. Cranbourne Police have been contacted for comment.

Shot ’roo Frank loses fight By Brendan Rees A kangaroo named Frank, who was recently shot in an arrow attack in Lysterfield Park, has died from his injuries. The 65-kilogram roo underwent surgery at Woofpurnay Veterinary Hospital in Narre Warren North where the arrow was removed. The kangaroo was found near Lysterfield Lake yacht club at Lysterfield Park which was reported by a member of the public on 11 January. A team of wildlife volunteer rescuers including Sue Johnston, who works with animals at her own shelter near Lysterfield Park, came to Frank's aid and gave him a prescribed sedative before taking him to the veterinary hospital. There, Frank was operated on and began his recovery at Five Freedoms Animal Shelter in the Macedon Ranges, in the last available enclosure. Manfred Zabinskas, who runs the shelter, said Frank was badly injured and was given anti-biotics where his leg had shown signs of "healing quite well" - but the wound to his neck were "quite severe" and he died on Monday 20 January. "The wound was so deep it actually caused nerve damage," Mr Zabinskas said. "What we realised that when he was in care that he actually was unable to eat or drink so we got to the stage where we were watching him and noticed none of his food had gone, he didn't touch any green grass that we gave him. "When we tried to give him water to drink he attempted to drink but he just couldn't lap it up. "We think that he actually ended up with nerve damage that affected his ability to actually swallow." Mr Zabinskas said his team put Frank on an intravenous drip and even bottled fed him

"The injuries were more severe than we had hoped," he said. Mr Zabinskas believed Frank was bent over eating when he was sadly shot in the familyfriendly park. "I have come across so many arrow attack cases over the years. People would be appalled to know how often this occurs," he said. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning as well as Victoria Police
are investigating the incident. Mr Zabinskas has called on the Federal Government to bring stronger laws to prevent dangerous weapons falling into the wrong hands. "I can't believe that anybody like children can just order stuff online or go to a gun shop and but archery equipment - there's no restrictions on archery equipment," he said. "You even need a permit for a sling shot but you don't need a permit for compound hunting bow." Five Freedoms Animal Shelter Facebook page shared disturbing images of Frank's in-
juries which was share hundreds of times. The news of his passing came with mixed emotions among users. "I am just about beyond anger over this appalling action. To hurt any creature is abhorrent, and the perpetrator should be put before a jury of animal lovers for judgement!" one post read. Another said: "So sorry to hear this sad news. Thank you to the wonderful examples of humanity who tried so hard to help this beautiful boy. Victoria Police have been contacted for comment.

Heavy rain batters region By Brendan Rees A big clean-up begun after wild weather lashed the region on Wednesday afternoon, 15 January. Residents were chocked by smoke blowing in from the bushfires raging in East Gippsland and sweltering temperatures - which was replaced by the downpour about 5pm. Narre Warren State Emergency Service received eight calls for help after severe thunderstorms brought flash flooding and caused trees to fall onto roads. This included a large tree which blocked a driveway and damaged a car in Lynbrook about 10pm where SES crews worked during the night using chainsaws to clear the tree. Two trees came down on Baxter-Tooradin Road in Cannons Creek during peak hour while flash flooding on Pound Road in Hampton Park caused chaos. Another job on Thursday morning, 16 January saw a roof collapse in Hampton Park.
Senior forecaster Rod Dickson from the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne said the highest rainfall in the southeast was 30 to 37 millimetres in Keysborough. Ten millimetres of rain fell in Officer, while 11 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Cardinia, and 18 millimetres in Berwick. "There was damaging winds associated with the thunderstorms but most of the reports were reported over the northern and western side of the city," Mr Dickson said. Avalon was smacked with the strongest wind gusts - which reached up to 113km/h. "Those more intense storms had probably weakened a little bit by the time they got over to Casey," he said. "We don't have a lot of observation sites down past about Moorabbin," he said, which received wind gusts up to 70km/h. "The rain helped cleared the air a little bit but we've still got some general smoke haze less today (16 January)."
Meanwhile, P2 face masks were made compulsory for all Australia Post staff working outdoors where the air quality was rated as "very poor or hazardous." "The safety of our people is our highest priority and we're continuing to monitor areas with poor air quality closely," an Australia Post spokesperson said. "We've told our people that if they're sensitive to poor air quality, feeling unwell, or simply don't feel safe being outdoors, that indoor work can be provided as an alternative." Ambulance Victoria said it was called to 232 breathing problem cases state-wide on 15 January - which was a 24 per cent increase on the annual daily average. The deluge did not impact the Cranbourne or Pakenham train lines, however a Metro spokesperson said at 5.40pm an equipment issue caused by lightning near Victoria Park Station resulted in 26 replacement buses.

Accused armed burglar defies curfew, court told By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Clyde North man accused of two aggravated burglaries in which he threatened residents with weapons has been refused bail. Rawlin Laile, 26, was said to have been on a bail curfew at the time when he allegedly broke into two family homes in Berwick and Narre Warren South on 19 January. The father-of-two allegedly disturbed occupants, and threatened them with weapons such as a hammer, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 January. Laile was accused of stealing a motorcycle helmet and gloves, hand tools and a motorbike from a home garage in Berwick about 2am on 19 January.
A male resident chased Laile, who had rolled the motorbike down the driveway and then fled on foot on Albrecht Avenue and Chirnside Road, the court heard. Laile threatened his pursuer with an unknown weapon, believed to be like a pole, according to police. Nearby, police allegedly found a backpack with some of the stolen items as well as a record of a police interview and other documents in Laile's name. Police told the court that the victim's description of the intruder, including forearm tattoos, matched Laile. In the second burglary in Narre Warren South, Laile allegedly broke into a garage while a couple and their young children were

home about 9am. A man living at the house confronted Laile, screaming at him to leave. Laile aggressively wielded a hammer that he'd allegedly stolen from the garage, police told the court. According to police, Laile could be clearly identified on the home's CCTV footage. Laile told a police interview that he'd been sleeping outside Trios Sports Club using his backpack as a pillow at the time of the burglaries, the court heard. He woke up the next day to find his bag and shoes were stolen, he allegedly told police. He said he then walked to a Clyde North home, where he slept until 11am.
In opposing bail, police argued Laile's serious alleged offending while on bail was "causing unrest in the community". Laile, who represented himself in court, said that he could prove he was at a family member's home at the time. He argued that the burglar featured on the home CCTV was "clearly ... not me". Magistrate Costas Kilias said Laile failed to meet the 'exceptional circumstances' test for bail. The police case against Laile was "strong", the allegations "serious", he said. Laile was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for a lawyer-represented bail hearing on 11 February.

Sword and cash found in police raid

Police have swooped on a Cranbourne West property and charged two men with drugs and firearms offences. Police members from the Southern Metropolitan Division Three Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant at the residential property on 17 January. They located an alleged illegal handgun, ammunition, quantities of methyl amphetamine, butanediol, amphetamine, ecstasy, a large sword and cash. A 31-year-old Cranbourne West man was arrested and has been remanded in custody after being charged with firearm, drug and weapons offences. He was due to appear at the Frankston Magistrates Court on 17 January. A 28-year-old Cranbourne man was arrested and charged with drug offences. He will appear at the Frankston Magistrates Court at later date.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Tuesday 21 January, a story was shared to the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page about hoons doing burnouts and speeding up and down a residential street in Cranbourne. Residents say it’s only a matter of time before someone loses control. Here’s how our readers responded: Mark Mathews: One already did have a crash about 2 years ago, came out of this cres, up wallace rd and right into a power pole which killed the transformer we were all out of power for ages, and the driver and pass got messed up too... Hoons strike By Brendan Rees Fed-up Cranbourne residents say it's just a matter of time before a hoon driver loses control of their car and ploughs into their homes. The neighbours who live on Valepark Crescent say they are frustrated with louts regularly doing burn-outs and have called for the reckless behaviour to stop. Mother of three Rebecca, who wished to withhold her surname, said she feared for her family's safety. "We are petrified one day someone is going to come through our front fence," she said. "Sometimes it's during broad daylight and times when kids could be outside playing. "The situation that's around you can change; there can be grease on the road, there can be a slippery spot, you just don't know." Rebecca said a traffic calming device - being a strip of concrete on the median - did little to deter hoon activity and pointed out a number of rubber marks on the road to Star News - with one about 30 metres long. Rebecca said she had seen a matt black Ford with no number plates terrorising the neighbourhood. "It's not always necessarily the same person," she said, adding the hoon activity happened up to five times a week. She said the culprits had "rocks in their head" in they thought they had control of their vehicle. "A couple of times that we have called police ... they did come," she explained, who "couldn't get over the length" of one burnout. "They need to put something at the corner of Valepark and Wallis where those two streets meet so they can't come flying around that corner." Another nearby resident, Shirlee, surname withheld, said she felt "uneasy" about the hoon drivers.

By the time I get up and get to the door they're gone; all you see is smoke," she said. A resident of 12 years, who asked to withhold her name, said cars often conducted drag racing one to two times a week in their usually quiet street. "There's a lot of smoke in the air too and they go for a good two minutes," the resident said. Others say they can't sleep due to the noisy hoon driving which was "always going on" and "not good for safety." Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Russell Bratton said police had a zero tolerance towards hoon behaviour and were conducting more operations in the area. "We're impounding more vehicles than ever before," he said. "The best thing is for people to report it as much as possible so we can start gathering the intelligence so we know where it's happening," Sgt Bratton said.

Sikh group helpers give out free food By Brendan Rees A group of Casey Sikh volunteers - who served thousands of free meals to bushfire-affected communities - say they are grateful for the "tremendous love" they received. Undeterred by the raging fires and smoke, the volunteers of Sikh Volunteers Australia - a not-for-profit organisation based in Devon Meadows - drove more than 250 kilometres to a relief centre set up at the Bairnsdale football oval on 30 December. They arrived at 1.30am and began handing out hot vegetarian meals and unloading their van packed with extra food supplies. For the next 16 days the volunteers prepared breakfast at 4.30am and 'lunch' at 8am, serving up to 1000 people a day who had been

Sikh Volunteers Australia vice-president Manpreet Singh said they saw it as their duty to help other Australians and follow the Sikh principles which had taught them to recognise the whole human race as one and deep respect for people.
He said they received the call for help after being contacted by the Bairnsdale neighbourhood Centre - which also assisted with accommodation and extra cooking facilities. "We slept in the cars and decided to stay there," Mr Singh said. "Every day we were cooking 50 kilograms of rice ... even the lunch we were serving the 800 to 900 people. "People started to like the food and more people were coming to the relief centre." Mr Singh said he saw emotional scenes during his 16-day visit. He recalled a time when a woman aged about 25 "did not say anything; just hugged the volunteers and started to cry." Premier Daniel Andrews visited the group where he shook hands and thanked each volunteer.
2020 and more TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH As we head into a new decade and thinking about what this may hold in store for us all, I am mindful of the wise words of Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC): “Study the past if you would define the future” and so have reflected on what I have seen over the better part of the past four decades as I believe there has been clear, unique focus area in each one of these. Having started out in the early 1980s as a software programmer, the focus was on quality. Deming’s teachings on continuous improvement and a “Total Quality Management” approach back in the 1960s and 1970s began to bear fruit and it soon became evident to software development companies that this led to less rework and more reliable applications. In addition, the American car manufacturing industry was overtaken by the quality-oriented Japanese as the world’s largest producer of automobiles in that decade. Yes, quality was here to stay. Enter the 1990s and this became the decade of customer focus. Simply concentrating on internal results counted for nothing unless you were providing your customers with what they really needed. Consequently there arose a lot of books and advice to seek first what your target market actually needed. “Our staff (are our most important asset)” became the catch-cry in the new millennium as epitomised by Richard Branson’s famous quote that “Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.” It is pretty well widely accepted now that your staff are “ambassadors of your brand” and as such must be nurtured and valued and those companies that fail to recognise this do so at their own peril. However, it also became a mantra that could easily expose the difference between words and actions and so managers needed to become more accountable for ‘walking the talk’. The most recent decade has been very much about sustainability and the “triple bottom line” as the effects of global warming now became indisputable. Any company that demonstrated an ability to provide quality results, focus on the customer, look after its staff and be environmentally conscious gave itself an edge in the eyes of both prospective customers and prospective employees. So what will the next 10 years hold? Well I think we are already seeing the focus here: “Wellness and Wellbeing”. Fuelled by an increase in mental health issues driven by anxiety at work, a number of companies now offer personal support such as mindfulness training, flexible hours to allow staff to drop off and pick up their kids or even offer childcare facilities. This of course has massive benefits in terms of staff attraction and retention. None of the focuses from previous decades has gone away - they have all now become almost accepted business practice. I strongly suspect this will be the way of things through the 2020 decade as well.

Inclusion on the down-low By Danielle Kutchel A new initiative to make Bunjil Place more accessible for those with sensory sensitivity was a quiet success. On Saturday 18 January, the library and gallery at the precinct were modified for Quiet Hour, to provide a low-sensory experience for members of the Casey community who have sensory sensitivity or who appreciated the extra quiet time and minimisation of potential triggers. Visitors took part in crafting activities and browsed Bunjil's library and exhibitions. Arts access/inclusion officer, active communities at Bunjil Place, Jessica Moody, said the morning went well and had a nice, calming presence. Now, she and the team behind Bunjil Place
are looking for more ways to make the entertainment venue more inclusive, beyond the relaxed performances already offered in the theatre. "It's about being receptive and acknowledging that yes, we've got people engaging with this space, but thinking about who aren't, and why are they not coming into this space, and what can I do to make that happen," she explained. "We just see how we can do it in our own unique way as a precinct ... we have a gallery, we have a library, why not offer it to everyone?" A number of inclusive events are lined up for 2020, including an Auslan-interpeted performance of Magic Beach, large print and multilingual labels in the gallery, and an Arts and Dementia tour in the gallery. In March, an evening show of Aurora by
Circus Oz will be audio described - a first for a show at Bunjil Place - and will include a preshow tactile tour. For Ms Moody, her role is derived from a personal passion: as someone who was born deaf, she is mindful of the experience of people who are unable to go to the theatre or enjoy other arts programs that are inaccessible to people with special needs. She is grateful to be in a position to be able to advocate for that community and recognises the importance of using the stories of people with disability to inform accessibility programs. "We're happy for them to have a platform to educate and share with us. "Wherever I can, I would use them as consultants or co-designers and acknowledge that I'm not the expert in everything."

Hazaras open their hearts with $150k cheque By Brendan Rees They are survivors of war ... so when they heard about the devastation of the bushfires it struck a chord with the ethnic Hazara community. Regardless of their visa status, they opened their hearts raising more than $150,000 in only 10 days for bushfire affected communities. Some are refugees, Hazara Australian citizens and asylum seekers - but all were united to give back to a country "that provided us shelter and protection." On Thursday 16 January, during a packed gathering at Doveton Hall, the Hazara community presented an honorary cheque of $22,543.44 to the Country Fire Authority and a further cheque of $133,477.56 to the Gippsland Emergency Relief fund. The gathering was attended by political dignitaries including City of Casey and Greater Dandenong councillors as well as the State Minister for Small Businesses, Innovation and Trade, Aden Somyurek and CFA District 8 operations manager Jamie Hansen. The donations were raised through campaigns and events organised by community delegates from across Victoria.

been ravaged by war," she explained. "As a result, we understand the pain of our brothers and sisters in the bushfire ravaged communities who have lost their homes, businesses and livestock to the fire across the country. "Our country Australia is hit by one of the
most devastating bushfire. We stand in solidarity with our brave firefighters and affected communities to help support them rebuild and recover loss of precious native wildlife. "We offer our condolences and sympathies with the families and friends during the bushfire crisis," she said. Ms Ali added: "After fleeing war and persecution from Afghanistan and Pakistan, Australia became home for Hazara Community." Members of the Hazara community have signed up for blood donations with Red Cross Australia and Hazara construction companies have offered their support to help rebuild homes and infrastructures in eastern affected regions. The Hazara Community will be collaborating with wider communities in organising a multicultural food and music festival to raise funds to reserve the state's wildlife. The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath,w ho attended the meeting, said: "It was heart warming and humbling to have this level of support provided to our Gippsland community and valued CFA."

The program also includes a special class at the end of the night for partners only to learn some of the different styles associated with rock ‘n’ roll including swing, west coast, jive,
triples, line and partner dances and cha cha. The classes are designed to be fun and easy to follow for those aged 10 upwards. Dancing is great for fitness, co-ordination, balance and memory, with many people forming great friendships through the classes. Rockn’ Suzies also runs a monthly charity

Narre Warren Seniors Narre Warren Seniors will re-open on 15th January. All activities will resume as usual till the end of January. From February 1st, for about six months, the centre will be closed for building renovations. However most of our activities will continue at other seniors club venues in the locality. The Wednesday Club Day and table tennis will be held at Hampton Park Seniors, Indoor Bowls will be at Hallam Seniors, Line Dancing and Sing-along will be at Berwick Seniors while Cards will continue at Fiddlers Green. The Garden Club will make their own arrangements month by month, while the Gentle Exercise and Darts Group will be inactive for this period. It’s all about community By Nick Creely The Arena Shopping Centre hosted its Community Day on Saturday morning, with two AFL footballers from the Western Bulldogs making a special appearance at a football skills session. In conjunction with the Officer Senior Football Club, Bulldogs midfielders Josh Dunkley and Callum Porter, both products of the Gippsland Power and Porter in particular a Kangaroo favourite son, were out and about signing autographs and helping the kids with a skill session at the free event designed to bring the community together, while also helping raise valuable funds for bushfire affected regions. Football club president Nick McLennan said it was a great boost for the community to have two current day AFL footballers come down and meet the fans. “It was a brilliant day, it was great to see so many smiling faces - both young and old who came along to participate in the AFL skills session and to meet with Cal and Josh,” he said.
The Officer Senior Football Club hosted an AFL skills session at the shopping centre. “The event really reinforces just how tightknit the Officer community is with valuable funds being raised for the bushfire appeal which has affected us all in a different way.
“It was also great to see the quality of football on display by some of the participants, which as a football fan gives me a great sense of optimism for the future of football in our region.“ Porter, an Officer local who was taken with pick 74 in the 2017 AFL Draft and has made steady progress at the Bulldogs in his time at the top-level, said it was a privilege to be able to give back to a community that has given him so much. “I always enjoy getting out to these sorts of events but for me this one was particularly special,” he said. “I grew up in Officer, played my junior footy here and my family still live in town. There were so many familiar faces, it was great to be back home and among friends.“ Dunkley enjoyed a stellar 2019 on-field for the Dogs and was part of the drought-breaking premiership in 2016. He said it was terrific to come out to the Officer community and learn more about the town his teammate grew up in. “One of the best things about playing AFL
is being able to get out and meet supporters, it was also interesting being out in Officer where Cal grew up. I learnt a lot about him,” he said with a laugh. “There were so many talented young footballers, it was great to see.” Maia Poananga, Arena spokesperson, said the day was a great success. “We are always looking for ways to support the local community and are proud to be partnered with the Officer Senior Football Club,” he said. “An event like this brings the locals together with their families to enjoy some free fun with the kids. “We also want to do our part for the bushfires. All donations from face painting at the event will go to the Australian Red Cross. We had some generous support from the community with this, which we’re very thankful for. “The Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse is also selling gingerbread firemen, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to the Victoria Bushfire Appeal, so make sure you get yours in store.”

It is a simple equation for young Flynn who claimed an impressive triple hat-trick on the weekend for the Devon Meadows Junior Cricket Club. Flynn's coach Michael Addison was impressed by his remarkable effort to claim five wickets; all bowled consecutively and was pleased he followed the advice of his coach. "Under 10s it is you bat for a certain amount of balls and if you go out you just swap ends," he said. "He is consistent, he tries hard and if you give him something to work on you know he will go away and work on it, he is not one of those who smile and nod which you get out of some kids." With good reason, Flynn wasn't shy of celebrating his triple hat-trick, pulling out the wings when he got this third in a row. "He got the second one and I said 'if you get this you know what it means?' and he said 'yeah' so I said 'if you get it, just put your arms out and run, and all the players will run after you," Addison said.
"He got it, bowled him and then took off, the whole team took off after him and it took us all about three minutes to get them back in their fielding positions. "So I said 'if you get another one, maybe don't do that, just stay on the pitch and everyone will come to you' and then he got the fourth one so that erupted again. "I said 'I have never seen anyone get five in a row so no chance you are going to do that' he said 'okay no worries', comes in and bowls the fifth one in a row. "I went alright fair enough; all five were bowled so he hit the stumps five times in a row." Individual scores are not recorded in the under-10 competition, but Flynn finished with three overs, 6/3 which included three extras.

Another successful year Gippsland Storm Elite Development Netball Club had another successful spring final series at the Waverley Netball Centre, with four squads out of 10 making the finals and three in the grand final. The fifteen and under one squad, coached by head coach Simon O'Shanassy, took out their third consecutive premiership in division one. An excited O'Shannassy spoke after the match about the success of the group. "(It was) a fantastic win by the Storm fifteen and under one squad, taking home their third consecutive premiership against Yarra Valley at the Waverley Netball Centre," he said. "Words can't describe how proud I am, not only of their success over the last two years, but more importantly the journey they've taken to get to where they are. "Whilst success is the end-product, this has been an amazing success for me, more so because of the hard work, determination, sacrifice, respect that this win reflects. This is what Gippsland Storm prides itself on, and they have truly reflected all the core values of our club. "I've been lucky enough to coach some amazing fifteen and under squads in the past, and this is definitely up there with one of the best. "Every single one of these girls has earned their place in this team and deserve every accolade for their hard work" O'Shannassy said that the bonds formed, and the mature approach to training and preparing for matches was ultimately the difference. "What puts this team above every other one, is how much they personify 'team'," he said. "Even for fourteen- and fifteen-year old's, they have an amazing level of maturity, at both training and more importantly in games, which is what I believe got us over the line. "The grand final was amazing spectacle between two quality sides. Full credit to Yarra Valley as well, for the way they represented themselves on court, and for both sides putting on a fantastic display of junior netball of the highest quality. "It's hard to fathom that these girls are still

Christina was very proud of everything they have achieved during the season. The following Tuesday night, the Storm senior division one squad were also in their grand final in Premier Division One. Many of the players in this division at Waverley are current VNL players, playing in the off-season to keep fit and improve their skills base. They came runners up on the night against a very experienced squad, made up of current and former VNL players.
WGCA girls shine in carnival After only three years of All Stars Girls Cricket, West Gippsland was proud to field a team in the Gippsland Country Week Carnival in early January. The group competed against other cricket associations in matches staged around Traralgon as female cricket continues to develop rapidly in the region. The WGCA girls enjoyed a strong victory on day two of the carnival, defeating Latrobe Valley by six wickets at St Pauls Anglican Grammar School, and showed that the side will be a force in coming years. The WGCA All Stars Girls coordinator Rob Hansen told the team at their cap presentation prior to the carnival to enjoy the chance to play representative cricket and to be proud of their place in history. "You are a special group, being the first ever female team to play on behalf of all participants in the WGCA," he said.
"Cherish the moment which you will savour all your cricket days." Hansen also noted to that girls that this is just the beginning for female cricket in the region. "You are all part of a journey. We began by initiating the girls competition, now we have a representative team as the second step in the journey," he said. "We look forward to further progress as the All Stars Girls develop and grow over the next few seasons." The captain of the team was Officer's Taylor Smith, while Kim Isaacs, also from Officer became the inaugural coach of the girls. Junior coordinator Shona Lynch and Janet Aumann (team manager) were on hand to support the girls during the carnival which was organised by Cricket Victoria's Rob Wood. One of the best games of the season for the Storm's senior squad was on the previous Tuesday night in the preliminary final, when everything came together, and they had a strong win. Most of this Storm senior squad coached by Simon O'Shanassy, are former Storm juniors, now playing in the VNL. Gippsland Storm president Sarah Blackman said that she was overall pleased with
2019, with so many teams doing well in both the autumn and spring seasons. She believes it's a testament to the culture built at the club - that of building the individual.
