Million-dollar home sales have plummeted almost 40 per cent in Geelong, the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula for 2019.

Just 342 homes cracked seven digits this year, down 218 from 560 in 2018.

But surprisingly, Whittington made this year’s $1 million list with a house in Regent St selling for $1,050,000 in March.

The “lovingly-restored” four-bedroom Edwardian home, on 3256 square metres of land, was originally built in 1916, according to its listing.

The house previously sold in May 1992 for $120,000, the listing said.

Despite the decline Real Estate Institute Victoria (REIV) president Leah Calnan was confident Geelong’s million-dollar market would rebound in 2020.

“Current economic conditions have led to prices growing,” she said.

“With strong demand, lower interest rates and easier lending conditions we will see a lot more million-dollar homes sold.

Drysdale plan delay

By Luke Voogt A community campaign has delayed a proposed 550-house estate in Drysdale that will “kill” the town’s rural character, according to a local group.

Geelong council received 63 submissions against the 1400-resident proposal before deferring its decision last week.

Drysdale Clifton Springs Curlewis Association president Mercedes Drummond described the council’s decision to postpone its vote on a planning amendment for the estate as a “shock move”.

“The decision surprised many of the councillors and officers at the meeting,” she said.

City Hall received 42 submissions from community groups, affected land owners and

local residents against the estate.

Another 21 residents in Marsh Ct objected to turning their street into a road servicing the planned estate.

“Such a broad community response is unprecedented and reflects the growing resistance to the increasing urbanisation of the peninsula,” Mrs Drummond said.

City Hall received “generally-supportive” submissions from six affected land owners including the developer, Bellarine Springs Retirement Village and owners east of Central Rd with “development interests”.

Ample Investments Group, which plans to redevelop the land and requested the council amendment, owns eight of the 28 properties.

“Council officers approached virtually no one outside of those 28 landowners,” Mrs Drummond said. The land in question is

bounded by Jetty Rd, Wyndham St and Central Rd, plus the adjacent Marsh Ct. Mrs Drummond in October warned the development could destroy “virtually the last bit” of rural land in Drysdale.

This week she reiterated the association’s concerns over “1000 extra cars”, drainage and the removal of up to 1000 trees.

She believed council had failed to hear residents’ “voices” in its development of Drysdale over the past decade.

The council can now make changes to the amendment, refer the submissions to an independent panel appointed by Victoria’s Planning Minister or abandon the amendment.

Planning portfolio chair Trent Sullivan said his fellow councillors took community submissions very seriously and wanted more time to consider the amendment.

Two Geelong schools are set to benefit from $11.5 million in educational grants, Liberal Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson announced this week.

Iona College Geelong will receive $10 million for new learning spaces while Bell Park’s Holy Family School will receive $1.5 million for new classrooms and amenities.

Lara development An $11.2 million plan to build almost 100 townhouses in Lara has been submitted to Geelong council.

The proposal includes 46 two-bedroom, 36 three-bedroom and six four-bedroom townhouses with 19 visitor car spaces.

New museum Geelong’s newest museum, an educational play space for kids aged one to early primary school years, is set to open early next year.

Based at The Wintergarden on McKillop St, the $1 million Museum of Play and Art (MOPA) will open on January 7, according to promoters.

Pokies sold The Geelong Football Club has ended its gambling-based activity by selling its Point Cook pokies business, the club announced this week. By Natalee Kerr Sitting in the blood donation chair for the 355th time, Armstrong Creek’s Bruce Wilson understands the importance of rolling up his sleeves this festive season.

The 70 year-old made the milestone plasma donation last Monday and has already set his next appointment before the New Year.

Bruce has been donating at the Lifeblood Geelong Donor Centre for the last 20 years.

“It’s easy to do, it’s quick, painless and free,” he said.

“Apparently I can keep coming until I’m 81, so I’m aiming to keep going until then.”

The fortnightly plasma donor said it feels “amazing” to learn about the impact from every donation.

“I’ve had some feedback from some of my donations that go to three particular places, including to very young children,” he said.

“To hear that makes the trip in all the more worthwhile as you feel more committed to it.“ Lifeblood spokeswoman Stephanie Reynolds said the centre needed 470 donors between December 26 and January 2 to prevent a shortage of blood stocks.

Corio theft Police are appealing for information regarding an aggravated burglary at a Corio home on December 12. Thieves stole a 2005 Land Rover Discovery, sentimental jewellery, personal cards and documents from the house while a female and her young children were asleep, police allege.

Teenage boy robs 84 year-old woman leaving cemetery

By Luke Voogt A teenage boy allegedly robbed an 84 year-old woman leaving a cemetery on Monday morning, according to police.

As the elderly woman left Geelong Eastern Cemetery about 11.30am.a teenage boy approached, threatened her with a large stick

and demanded cash, police alleged.

The victim handed over some cash before the offender allegedly demanded more and threatened her again, police said.

The offender ran off from the cemetery, located on Bellarine Hwy, after a woman approached him and the victim.

Witnesses told detectives from Geelong Crime Investigation Unit the alleged offender was of Caucasian appearance, about 14-15 years old and looked dishevelled.

The elderly woman was uninjured following the alleged robbery. Police urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Tears of joy as VCE ends

By Natalee Kerr When Newtown’s Iona Bulford got up at 6.58am last week, she never anticipated to shortly be crying “tears of joy”.

Following a sleepless night awaiting VCE results, the Geelong College graduate woke up early to check her ATAR. She discovered she had landed a near-perfect score of 99.65, including a study score of 48 out of 50 for both English and Psychology.

“I immediately burst into tears, I couldn’t stop crying,” Iona told the Indy this week.

“I think it was just the build-up of all the nerves, stress and anticipation.”

The 18-year-old said she “couldn’t believe” the number on her computer.

“I stared at the screen for five to 10 minutes, I was just stunned,” she said.

“I definitely didn’t expect to get a score this high – I was shocked, but also very excited.”

With tears rolling down her face, Iona said her parents were initially worried she had not achieved the score she hoped for.

“I ran back upstairs to tell my parents and because I was crying they thought I did badly,” she said.

“But then I told them my result and they were so excited and proud of me.”

Iona was one of more than 45,000 year 12 students to receive the end of year score last week.

The college co-captain recorded the region’s third highest score, and landed the 2019 Dux for her school.

A keen musician, debater and hockey player, Iona credited her impressive schooling achievement to “keeping busy“.

Veteran cops welcome card

An insurer has refused a veteran policeman with PTSD and permanent injuries compensation for moving house, despite previously “agreeing“ to it, according to the former officer.

Single dad-of-three Paul Robson, 52, tore his achilles tendon and shattered his wrist while arresting a gunman intending to carry out a hit in 2010.

“We were given 10 minutes notice there was going to be a murder,” he said.

“A drug deal that was going up (in the Northern Territory) went sour.

“Someone incorrectly blamed a man in Geelong for it. They were going to shoot this man believing him to be the informer.”

Mr Robson wished not to divulge what happened out of respect for another officer involved in the arrest, which occurred near a group of children.

“It turns out my nine year-old son was in that group of kids 50 metres away,” he said.

While the arrest left Mr Robson with permanent injuries, most of his mental scars came from working in a western suburbs sexual offences unit.

“It didn’t matter how long I was able to get an offender in jail for,” he said.

“It was the fact I couldn’t do anything for the victim. I’ve been involved in cases where the victim was as young as eight months.”

Mr Robson takes several tablets each day for his wrist, ankle and PTSD, including painkillers and antidepressants, and has had several ketamine infusions.

“I’ve had four surgeries and they can’t fix (my achilles tendon),” he said.

Police veterans have welcomed a new card providing health and well-being concessions to former officers.

The benefit card, providing discounts and benefits to veterans from health, fitness, lifestyle and family retailers, was an “Australianfirst”, according to Victoria Police.

Police Veterans Support Victoria chair Gerard Ryan said all former officers could apply for the card.

“The sad reality is that many police struggle with mental health and other welfare issues in some way or another during or after their career,” Mr Ryan said.

Former Geelong officer Paul Robson, a 30 year veteran, has PTSD and permanent ankle and wrist injuries. He now runs a support group for veterans dealing with trauma from their former careers.

“Some weeks I don’t get a phone call and sometimes it will be ringing off the hook.

“There’s nights when I get in the car at 3am and drive (an hour) because someone’s going to kill themselves.”

While Mr Robson supports other veterans through trauma, he has his own friend looking after him – border collie blue heeler cross Harvey.

“He’s not a service dog but you could be forgiven for thinking he was,” he said.

“He’s just got it in him – when I’m having a bad day he won’t let me out of his sight.

“When I’m in the shower he’ll follow me into the bathroom and lay on the floor – there’s no getting away with him.”

“Very rarely have I had a bad interaction with them but lately that has become a constant.”

Mr Robson phoned the insurer in September as he planned to move house due to damage to his existing home.

He booked a removal after two consultants gave “tacit approval” that he could claim the expense, he said.

But almost a month later the insurer wrote back saying the service was not “reasonable and/or necessary”, or approved by WorkSafe under the act.

“That’s $2000 this veteran doesn’t have,” he said.

“The kids and I are not surviving financially after my divorce. You think, ‘what the hell did I do (30 years in Victoria Police) for?’”

Gallagher Bassett referred the Indy to WorkSafe, which declined to comment for “privacy reasons”.

Charges over burglaries

By Luke Voogt A Bannockburn man faces an extensive list of charges over his alleged involvement in seven burglaries in October.

Dimitri Tsatsaronis, 30, fronted Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday to face charges of burglary, theft, car theft, theft from a car, criminal damage by fire, traffic and other offences.

Geelong Tasking and Crime Intervention Taskforce detectives arrested Mr Tsatsaronis on Friday.

journed the matter and remanded Mr Tsatsaronis to appear again at Geelong Magistrates Court on January 6.

Detectives released images last week following a spate of burglaries they believed to be linked across Geelong and surrounding towns in October.

On October 10 at about 3.30am three male offenders broke into a Caltex service station on Thompson Road, North Geelong, stealing cigarettes and causing property damage, police alleged.

Investigators released an image of an Iveco Ducato tray truck allegedly involved in the break-in and two men who could “assist with

enquiries”.

Detectives alleged thieves stole the truck during a Leopold burglary on October 9, and police recovered it on October 10 in Corinella St, Bell Post Hill.

Three more burglaries in three separate towns occurred in one hour on October 15, with two alleged burglars stealing mobile phone accessories, cigarettes, alcohol and cash.

Detectives released images of a late model silver Mitsubishi Pajero and a burglar using a saw to cut through a roller door during a breakin at IGA on Main Rd, Winchelsea.

The other two burglaries occurred at a service station on Midland Hwy, Bannockburn, and a liquor store on The Centreway, Lara.

On October 27 three burglaries occurred in Geelong between 1.50am and 2.15am, with offenders stealing cash and cigarettes.

The burglars broke into a fast-food outlet on Melbourne Rd, North Geelong, a store on Shannon Ave, Geelong West and The Cremorne Hotel on Pakington St, Newtown, police alleged.

Police released an image of two alleged offenders at The Cremorne Hotel. The investigation was ongoing, police said.

Cash gives sight to sore eyes Geelong has raised more than $300,000 to help restore sight to thousands of blind and visionimpaired people in countries such as Laos.

Lao single father Porlee and his two children Shoua and Blong were among many to receive a Christmas gift from the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Porlee’s children were born with blinding cataract – a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye.

“Our life was so difficult, I had no idea what to do,” Porlee said.

He then came in touch with the foundation’s outreach eye camp and set off on a eighthour journey to the hospital with his children.

Porlee later discovered, while at the hospital, that he also had cataract in both eyes.

But with the help of an ophthalmic surgeon, and $312,000 worth of donations from the Geelong region, the family’s eyesight could

be restored.

Fred Hollows Foundation chair John Brumby said the generosity, support and community spirit of Geelong was “inspiring”.

“I’m proud to be a Victorian but now even more so, having seen how our community gives to people who are less fortunate,” Mr Brumby said.

“I want people to know that every dollar counts and makes a huge difference to people who would otherwise go blind without our help.”

The non-for-profit organisation, founded by eye surgeon Fred Hollows in 1992, now operates across more than 25 countries to help train and empower local eye doctors.

The foundation aims to “make sure everyone, whether they’re rich or poor” has access to high-quality affordable eye health.

Terry paints final stroke on gallery tenure

By Luke Voogt Wallington businessman and art enthusiast Terry Wills Cooke “loved every minute” of his six years as president of Geelong Gallery.

The 86-year-old Order of Australia medallist described his tenure as a “wonderful journey” after stepping down recently.

“I would do it again and again if I had the opportunity,” said Terry, who is also patron of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

“What I love about art is the same as what I love about music. It gives one inspiration of all different types.”

Terry also retired from Australian-based in-

ternational businesses organisation The CEO Institute last Wednesday after almost three decades, to look after his wife of 62 years.

“The boss needs looking after,” he said.

“She’s in very poor health and I need to be at home looking after her. I’m not as young as I was and she hasn’t been well for a while now.”

Terry described an exhibition of one of Australia’s greatest painters, Mt Duneed-born Arthur Streeton, as a highlight of his tenure.

“It was the first time in the gallery’s history that we ever had a pay-per-view exhibition,” he said.

“It was an absolutely wonderful exhibition of Geelong and the western suburbs.”

Terry said he would remain on the gallery’s

board and that he hoped new president Gerard Mullaly could bring “fresh” ideas to the role.

“I think no one should be in the same job for too long.”

Terry also expressed his pride at helping to make Geelong Gallery “financially sustainable”.

He looked forward to the gallery’s “incredible” audience continuing to grow and its future expansion into City Hall.

“I think Geelong is really fortunate to have the gallery it’s got,” he said.

“The great tragedy is we only get to exhibit three per cent of it at any one time so the people don’t get to see what they own.”

What is coming over the RACV? The RACV as a motoring organisation should first and foremost look after and enhance the interests of motorists. However, the RACV is gloating over its acquisition of a green energy supplier based in Gippsland and it claims by going solar this will have the effect of reduce their carbon footprint to the equivalent of taking 9,000 cars off the road.

Since when does a motoring organisation boast that it is potentially reducing its membership by 9,000?

I’m a member of the RACV so they can look after my motoring needs in times of emergency. I’m certainly not happy at all my subscription is being used to purchase expensive solar energy. Why are they wanting to turn the organisation into being another group primarily focused on environmental issues?

Confusion on climate I agree with Peter Mitchell (Letters 13/12) about confusing terms in the climate debate. For example, Stephen Blackburn (Letters 13/12) calls carbon dioxide ’pollution’.

Surely the most bizarre description of one of the planet’s essential gases, without which no plant or animal lives.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) must come into the debate because ’global warming’ and ’climate change’ are natural phenomena. Humans can be blamed for both because the falsely maligned CO2 is emitted by fossil-fuels burned by humans.

Mr Mitchell claims temperatures are now rising at a rate much higher “than over the rest of human history.“ Our ancestors came out of the last great glaciation 11,000 years ago into the warmth of the Holocene epoch in which we exist. It was many degrees warmer then.

Even recent warm periods – the Minoan, the Roman, the Medieval – were all warmer than ours. So what is this temperature that Mr

It seems that eight of Geelong’s council have no spine. Eddy Kontelj for one (Geelong Indy, 13th December), is concerned for drivers who are slowed in our main street and he is now spending our money on another costly review.

Anything to justify his odd idea that our mainstreet priority is for cars and trucks, not for families. Even if it saved drivers two minutes, would we really go back to the old speedway for cars in our city centre? They are hoping to see 11,000 more car movements per day.

Crazy. Why would we pay to dirty and pollute our main-street? The Green Spine is a magnificent improvement, making the centre not only greener, more pleasant and safer for us who love spending time in Geelong Centre. Maybe we should slow the cars even more and make our city centre even better?

That coincides with the period when the world really started returning carbon back to the carbon cycle (i.e. from about 1960), yet the underlying mild rate of warming (one degree celsius over the century) did not change. Then, almost 20 years ago, we stopped warming altogether although this inconvenient truth seems not to have properly registered with the IPCC, the crisis-addicted media or with humble school science teachers. Rural and regional people in particular are suffering a disproportionate burden for the city-based, wealthy upper middle class, sky-is-falling hysteria. How long will they have to wait for a true leader in this country to call it out?

Water can extinguish house fires, and protect homes and towns, but is useless for raging forest fires. The only solution here is to fight fire with fire – back burning from the wide cleared tracks which should protect every park, forest and property.

The best fire insurance is to keep tracks and firebreaks clear and conduct regular coolseason burn-offs, especially in National Parks.

And stop creating fire hazards by locking up more land.

Don’t blow money on more water bombers – we need more back-burning, more boots and tyres on the ground and more graded tracks.

And we should build more dams.

By Ewen McRae A new partnership is set to make the home buying experience easier.

Property data leader CoreLogic has combined with realestateview.com.au to provide a state-of-the-art price estimator, giving property owners and property seekers instant price value ranges for properties across the state.

Every address searched has a range of property data and demographic information relevant to the suburb where that property is located.

Toby Balazs, chief executive of realestateview.com.au, said nearly every home buyer

used a price estimator in their search, and combining with CoreLogic gave searchers the trust they needed.

“We believe that we will have the most accurate property data that can be accessed by home buyers,” Mr Balazs said.

“The breadth and depth of property data that CoreLogic brings to us right across the country is amazing. They’ve got a very strong name in the property industry, so we believe by us partnering with them we can provide our property-seeking audience with more data, accurate data, and give them confidence when they’re performing a property search.”

Launching last week, the price estimator will provide home buyers and sellers with an Automated Valuation Model on any properties they search through the portal.

Mr Balazs said it would be particularly useful as the market goes through a period of fluctuation, with prices in general rising after a previous downturn in the market.

“I think it’s an important tool in any market,” he said.

“Australians, as we know, are property obsessed, so there’s no shortage of interest in property.

“Whether it be an up-swing or a down-

swing in the market, it’s always important to know where the value sits, but in what has been a tough market in 2019 it’s always important to understand what those property price indicators are at an individual level, and then get it verified by one of our agent partners.

“For buyers, sellers and vendors, to know what to expect if you take a property to market is very important.

“I think looking at clearance rates recently, there’s more confidence in the market now, so this partnership will only become more important.”

The art of education More than 1000 students across the Geelong region are set to have their artwork displayed at a premier cultural institution next year.

The year four students from more than 20 local schools, will showcase their creative flair through a week-long exhibition at the National Wool Museum in March.

The exhibition aims to highlight 26 threatened birds in the region, and educate young people about the local environment.

Supporting educational material, designed by Geelong scientist and artist MaryJane Walker, will tie in with the student’s curriculum.

Ms Walker said the project was a “terrific” initiative.

“It focuses on making people think about what can be done to retain the biodiversity of this area,” she said.

“We hear so much about the changing en-

vironment, which can often be overwhelming, but this project will help bring the bigger issues down to the local level.”

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the new exhibition will help educate the “next generation” on the threats to Geelong’s rare bird species.

“The exhibition and wider forum will shine a light on conservation efforts and promote the variety of activities and initiatives being done by local environmental groups,” she said.

The exhibition forms part of the Geelong Nature Forum that highlight’s the region’s natural “wonders” through a series of naturebased activities, presentations and displays.

This year’s theme, “where the rivers run”, focuses on animal and plant life in the Geelong region’s rivers, creeks and wetlands.

Shakespeare in the garden

By Luke Voogt For the past 25 years, Bruce Widdop has led audiences on outdoor Shakespearian adventures.

“We call our audience adventurers because it’s like they’re going on an adventure with us,” the 73-year-old told The Indy.

“Outdoor theatre makes the plays come alive.”

Widdop has performed in more than 500 plays written by The Bard since he founded theatre company OZACT. “It’s pretty incredible right?” he said.

“I couldn’t be happier – it’s been really fulfilling and exciting.”

The company returns to Geelong Botanic Gardens next month with Shakespeare’s masterpiece of disguise, deception and desire, Twelfth Night.

“I think it’s a sensational venue,” Widdop said. “The old part of the gardens is beautiful with its sweeping lawns, English plants and exotic specimens.

“We have an audience guide character that leads them to different locations in the gardens.”

Widdop taught theatre at Federation University, Ballarat, for 25 years before deciding to jump in the deep end and start his own company.

He never thought the group would last as long as it has.

“It’s like jumping off the pier and then you see where you go from there,” he said.

“You don’t look that far ahead.”

For 12 years he has performed at Geelong Botanic Gardens, the fourth oldest gardens in Victoria.

“Our productions are popular with Shake-

“He’s striving to get ahead but he goes too far and he has a fall,” Widdop said.

“Because he has such a sharp rise and tremendous fall, that makes him exciting to play.

All the characters are not what they seem.”

time of day, Olivia loves Viola, who she thinks is a boy, Viola loves Orsino, who doesn’t know she’s a girl.

Geelong trio rewarded with new contracts

By Natalee Kerr Geelong’s Sam Menegola and Tom Atkins have agreed to new contracts extending their deals until the end of the 2021 season.

“Both Sam and Tom have proven themselves as valuable members of our team, and we are pleased to have reached these new agreements,” Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.

“They are influential in setting high standards within our playing group and we feel both have continued growth ahead of them.”

Menegola began his AFL career with Hawthorn and Fremantle before joining Geelong in the 2015 draft.

He debuted in 2016 playing 65 games and

kicking 48 goals, and played finals for the Cats in each of his four seasons.

Atkins took the long road to becoming an AFL regular.

After strong performances in both the Geelong Football League and the VFL with Geelong, including two best and fairest wins in 2016 and 2018, Atkins was drafted as a rookie.

He played 23 games in his debut season, mainly as a pressure forward and on the ball.

Star defender Harry Taylor has also announced he will play on for another year.

The 33-year-old revealed the decision to stay came soon after Geelong’s preliminary final loss in September.

“It was probably the next 48 hours after that game,” Taylor said.

“A lot goes into these decisions, it is not something that just comes into your head.

“But in the end I still have a strong desire and strong passion to help this footy club win another premiership. That has been my goal now for a very long time.”

Taylor said the team did a “lot of things right” during a “tough” 2019 season and were determined to further improve next year.

“We need to remember the good things we have done, but we also need to remember how important it is to improve,” he said.

“There have certainly been cases in the past where teams have got to preliminary finals and unfortunately haven’t been able to back it up the next season, so what we need to do is continue to have that strong growth mindset.”

Geelong’s season hangs in balance In reply, the Bears were in big trouble early when they were reduced to 3/29, but Corey Walter (62) and Stan Grazotis (82) combined for a big partnership, before the Bears tail got them over the line in the last over.

If they want to play finals this season, they simply must take early wickets tomorrow to give themselves any chance of winning.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, the top of the table clash between North Geelong and Lara is heavily balanced in North Geelong’s favour.

Lara batted first last week with hopes of continuing its good form with the bat, but the Magpie bowlers took the honours on the day, restricting Lara’s total to just 166.

Opener Lachlan Hayes (5/44) was the pick of the bowlers, while Alistair McCann (2/27) chipped in with some handy off spin.

They will now play Bell Park at Hamlyn Reserve tomorrow in what should be a cracking game. Bell Park’s form has been impeccable, but Marshall have a habit of stepping up to the plate in finals, so this will be a tough contest.

The local fishing at the moment is still proving to be quite productive with the snapper fishing still going well. Fishing in the northern end of the bay around P2 and the Faulkner beacon have had a few reports of snapper taken over the week, however the fishing at times can be quite challenging so patience may be a key factor to coming home with a feed. Not far from this action, Point Cook has been having plenty of squid still on the chew close to the shore. Casting artificial jigs over the weed beds in about 3.5m of water has been the best way to target them.

Clifton Springs is still drawing a large crowd of boats all in the hope of finding a snapper or two with plenty of success being had. Along the channel has been one of the most popular areas with most fish around that 3kg mark with still a few larger fish getting thrown into the mix. In a bit closer there is still plenty of pinkies between legal and about 2.5kg taking a liking to soft plastics, however bait seems to be getting the better numbers and size. There is plenty of other species in the same area snatching up anglers plastics including salmon, pike, flathead and even King George whiting.

The whiting fishing at the moment has been fantastic as of late with most boats finding themselves an easy feed.

Fishing from Clifton Springs right through to Queenscliff has definitely been the go-to locations, in particular St Leonards. Fishing a tide change of an evening has been the best time by far and with baits such as pipi, squid and pilchard fillets proving deadly finding plenty of fish to over 40cm. Chris from Trellys got out over the weekend and boated himself a cracking feed of whiting from Queenscliff on pipis.

Queenscliff harbour has been fishing very well as of late for silver trevally with great numbers and at a great size. Guys fishing baits with either pilchards or pipis have been finding the majority of them but the bigger fish have been biting much better on soft plastics.

The Barwon River around Fyansford has had a few reports of redfin starting to roll in over the past week, although not massive in size they make up for it in great numbers. Brad Apps got out during the week and had great success on them casting megabass sigletts getting those exiting surface strikes.

Bell Park deserve to start favourites, but Marshall won’t mind that one bit and just might cause an upset.

Danny Hughes (42) was the only Lara batsman to produce anything worthwhile.

North Geelong survived 10 overs unscathed, and should go on and win tomorrow.

In division two, Marshall defeated Geelong City last Saturday in a tightly fought contest to progress to tomorrow’s one day final against Bell Park.

City batted first and posted a competitive 5/217 from their 50 overs with Pat Richards (70) top scoring.

And in division three, Corio looked like causing a major upset when it dismissed Newcomb & District for just 190 last week.

Matthew De’vries (4/31) took the honours with the ball, while Kayden Henry (46) was the only Dinos batsman to look good.

However, when it was Corio’s turn to bat, the tables turned dramatically, with Zane Richter (5/10) ripping through the top order to send them to stumps at 6/39.

It would take a miracle for Corio to win tomorrow, meaning they will go into the Christmas break with a spot in this season’s finals seemingly a long way off.
