Christmas is in full swing at Coldstream Animal Aid. The shelter has decked their halls and are offering animal owners the chance to get snapped with Santa Paws. There’s also an advent calendar made specifically for dogs.

Emily Kent is pictured with Fergus the foxhound cross bloodhound, who is up for adoption. The two-year-old is described as playful but easy-going, and loves to howl along to a Christmas carol.

Finding a new cat or dog under the tree is a dream come true for many on Christmas morning, but Elle Amman from Animal Aid also said that any decision about a new furry family member should be done well in advance.

Christmas by the lake

When December rolls around it's time to start looking forward to Christmas pud, turkey, family BBQs, a visit from Santa and of course, carols and special events.

Carols by Candlelight are a beautiful way to get into the spirit and celebrate with the family, friends and the community.

Emerald Carols by the Lake will get your family into the festive spirit with a community picnic from 6-8pm and carols from 8-9:30pm.

This free carols event is held at Emerald Lake every year and continue to prove itself as a festive fun Christmas event.

Come along with picnic baskets and carol singing mojo for a night of local entertainment and holiday togetherness, but be sure to bring a rug for the community picnic, which begins at 6pm and features local entertainment.

The picnic will be followed by the community carols lead by local artists and Cardinia Concert band but before the night is over there may be a visit from Santa!

Join the party as we the Emerald community decks 'the hills' with joy and laughter beside the beautiful Emerald Lake.

Giving and forgiving centre stage at Emerald Library

By Derek Schlennstedt People across the Casey Cardinia region donated more than $10,000 worth of gifts and non-perishable food items to the Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) Forgiving Tree Appeal in the lead up to Christmas, last year.

In years past, library members were able to get their library fines waived in return for donated gifts and food. However in 2018 CCL permanently removed overdue fines, which changed the focus of this year's campaign.

The Forgiving Tree has provided a call to action for people wanting to pay it forward and help people doing it tough.

CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said it was inspiring to witness the generosity of library members, even when the waiving of overdue fines was no longer an incentive.

The removal of overdue fines at CCL has proved a great success. There has been a relatively small increase in overdue items, more items are being borrowed and there has been a marked reduction in 'lost items'.

Mr Buckingham said, "Our members have demonstrated just how committed and giving they are. It's clear that they are motivated to help others and we're delighted to be able to facilitate their compassion through our libraries."

"This time of year can be difficult for many.

There are a lot of added pressures. The Forgiving Tree encouraged our community to step up and contribute to a brighter Christmas for locals in need", said Buckingham.

CCL partnered with eight local charities during the six-week campaign, including WAYSS, Cranbourne and Casey North CISS, Transit Outreach Service, Hampton Park Community House, Barry Plant Emerald and Emerald Community House, to ensure the donations were distributed to those who needed them most.

"Public libraries can contribute to stronger and more resilient communities in so many different ways. Libraries really do change lives", concluded Buckingham.

Festive food drive starts Barry Plant Emerald has once again teamed up with local community groups to help families in need at Christmas. The drive seems to get more successful each and every year, allowing the event's coordinators to spread the cheer a little further.

The St Mark's and St Luke's churches in Emerald and Cockatoo respectively pack the collected food and other items into hampers.

The community comes together to help.

In previous years, the food drive has managed to collect enough food to make up and deliver 61 hampers full of goodies to local families, just in time to make their Christmas a little brighter.

This year, they're hoping to make it even bigger.

A token or two for taste

By Derek Schlennstedt With food insecurity on the rise across Victoria, Woolworths Belgrave, Ferntree Gully and Emerald District customers are being encouraged to support this year's Woolworths OzHarvest Christmas Appeal.

In response to the growing demand for support, customers are urged to purchase a 50 cent meal token help to provide a meal for the one in five people in Victoria who have experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months.

Recent Foodbank Hunger Report research shows the need for food relief services has increased by 20% over the past year1. At least once a week, 30% of food insecure Australians go a whole day without eating and the Appeal aims to reduce this number over the Christmas period in Victoria.

Through the Appeal, and supplemented by regular donations of fresh produce from Woolworths stores nationally, Woolworths Fresh Food Rescue Partner, OzHarvest, aims to deliver meals to more than 155 charitable agencies across Victoria and help ease the ever increasing need from around the country.

OzHarvest Founder and CEO Ronni Kahn AO said; "Going hungry at Christmas is a harsh reality for an increasing number of Victoria residents."

"We are asking generous Woolworths customers to support the OzHarvest Christmas Appeal, so that we can continue to deliver much needed food to local charities that support Australians requiring hunger relief."

By purchasing a 50 cent dinner plate token at the register of any Woolworths store or online from now until 24 December 2019, customers will be able to help OzHarvest provide a meal for an Aussie in need.

Giving for a greater good

By Derek Schlennstedt Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) manager Tania Bevan knows about those pressures all too well.

For many of her clients, just buying their children a gift from Santa is too much.

Which is why the DRERS Giving Tree has been in the Belgrave Library for over 18 years, and this year is no different.

At the large Christmas tree found in Belgrave Library, people can take a tag from the tree and leave an 'unwrapped' gift for anyone aged between newborn and 18 years.

"It's probably the time of year you notice the disadvantage in our community more, and for us it's our busiest time of year in terms of providing emergency relief to people.," Ms Bevan said.

"It's a time of year where families are stretched financially and for some parents it's an impossible task because they have to prioritise saving for start of the school year and over holidays and there's extra expenses. So when they don't have enough for those things something's got to give."

Ms Bevan said the Christmas campaign had experienced enormous success with the community digging deep to help their neighbours.

Members of the community were welcome to leave unwrapped gifts up until Friday, 18 December.

"There is no need to wrap the gifts as they are displayed so the kids can have just what

they want for Christmas."

"What we are after is new toys for all ages vouchers for teenagers are the most sought after gift and if people are stuck for ideas, sporting goods are great gifts."

"Gifts can be left under the Christmas tree at Belgrave Library or given to the Library staff, if people aren't comfortable putting them under the tree."

DRERS also prepares hampers to give away, so donations such as plum puddings were also welcome and can be made at the DRERS office locate beneath the Belgrave Hub. The Belgrave Library is located at Reynolds Lane, Belgrave.

Ms Bevan said there was always a positive response to the tree and thanked the community for their caring.

"Making sure the kids having something, under the Christmas tree is our thanks and it's so nice to know that kids in our community won't miss out."

"I want to thank everyone who has donated in the past as it's making a big difference ... everyone at DRERS would like to thank people who donate for their wonderful donations and wish them a safe and happy Christmas," Ms Bevan said.

Finding a tree-mendous tree for Christmas of joy

Helping out the needy Ranges First National Real Estate is joining forces with Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service Inc (DRERS) to support families in need this festive season.

DRERS are a not-for-profit Christian charitable organisation providing emergency relief to people in need of support in the south-west of the Yarra Ranges Council.

Their service is confidential and nonjudgemental and they offer help to all people, regardless of race, religion or belief.

The wonderful folks at DRERS are hoping to supply 140 family sized hampers this year so gather up your non-perishable food items and drop them into us when you next visit.

So, you've picked your perfect Christmas tree and it's made its journey home...now what?

The Mail spoke to Adrian from Ports Christmas Tree Farm in Belgrave South about what you can do to help your tree stay happy, healthy and green for the festive season.

"If you're taking your tree home on the roof of your car, the tree should be secured/loaded for proper aerodynamics."

"Position the tree so the base is towards the front of the car, this way the wind will sweep over it following the natural bend of the limbs.

Always tie to the trunk and the stem so not to squash outer branches."

Once you've got it home Adrian told the Mail that it's important to leave the tree in a spot that's protected from the wind, rain and sun.

From there you can begin getting the tree ready to be put up inside.

"When you're ready to set up, make a fresh cut off the bottom of the trunk or, drill some holes into the base of the trunk."

"This opens the trunk so it can take in water properly.

"Fresh-cut trees are very thirsty and your tree will drink a lot of water in the first few days so it's important that you have a stand that can hold enough water.

"Your tree will be happiest away from heat sources and direct sunlight and will drink less water.

"A properly cared for tree can stay green, healthy and happy for that Christmas Day Party."

A merry Monbulk branch

By Derek Schlennstedt It has been a busy 2019 for the Monbulk and District Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank as well as the local community.

Early in the year the bank branch ran a successful outdoor community cinema night.

Incredibles 2 was screened on the oval with many local families joining us for a free family friendly evening. After so much positive community feedback in conjunction with the Monbulk Cricket Club the branch decided to run four more spring/summer movie nights to be held at the Monbulk Rec Reserve. In October they also screened the first movie, Hotel Transylvania.

Local community groups provided food and snacks for purchase and a great night was had by all.

August saw the official opening of the Monbulk Community Pavilion, which was a successful collaboration between the State Government, Local Government and the clubs and community of Monbulk and District. The facility is state of the art and will be a benefit to the whole community.

The Community Bank sponsorship recipients in 2019 were from all over our local area.

These included Emerald/Monbulk Wildlife Shelter who applied for funds to help build animal enclosures, Monbulk College who will use funds towards wellbeing wall art for students, and Monbulk RSL who will use their funds to establish a defibrillator on site at the Monbulk RSL Hall.

By Derek Schlennstedt Cockatoo RSL will make Christmas a little brighter for those who might otherwise spend the day alone.

The Belgrave-Gembrook Road venue will host a free lunch from 11am on Tuesday 25 December. Treasurer and bar manager Carol Thompson said this would be the fourth annual event.

"It's for people that have nowhere to go on Christmas Day," she said.

"Rather than being home alone on Christmas Day, they can come together.

"We only started it two years ago, so this will be our third one this year "I was watching something on TV about people having nowhere for Christmas and I turned around to my husband and said 'we should have a Christmas lunch on Christmas day'."

About 30 people attended last year's Christmas lunch. "We have quite a few people volunteer to come and do it," Ms Thompson said.

"We have a few people who'll make some-

thing and drop it off on the way to their family lunch." On the menu will be a traditional road plus salads.

"The bar is open and we sell the drink at member's prices on Christmas day," Ms Thompson said.

"Last year we were donated some gifts so we did a raffle, where we handed everyone a raffle ticket and they could select a random gift."

She said guests were welcome to show up on the day, but indicating interest in advance helped the venue to prepare. Call 5968 8053.

Santa up for the carols The man in red himself is promising to make an appearance at the Cockatoo Community Christmas Carols.

The event will kick off at 5pm on Saturday 7 December at Alma Treloar Reserve in Pakenham Road, Cockatoo.

The St Luke's Anglican Church in McBride Street will open its doors as the wet-weather venue should the heavens open up.

From 5pm to 6.30pm there'll be free family activities with a festival-feel, including a jumping castle, popcorn, face painting and fairy floss.

There'll also be a sausage sizzle for a small cost. The Christmas carol singing will start at 6.30pm. This is an alcohol-free event.

The BelgraveGembrook Road venue will host a free lunch from 11am on Tuesday 25 December.

RANGES FIRST NATIONAL CHRISTMAS CARAMEL FUDGE Ingredients (Makes 40 pieces)

2 x 395g cans of sweetened condensed milk 2 cups irmly packed brown sugar 250g butter, chopped 1/3 cup liquid glucose Âź cup golden syrup 400g good-quality white cooking chocolate, chopped

Instructions

1. Grease a slab pan & line with baking paper 2. Place condensed milk, sugar, butter, glucose and golden syrup in a large, heatproof, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave, uncovered, on MEDIUM-HIGH (70%) for 8-10 min, stirring with a whisk every 2 min, or until mixture comes to the boil.

3. Microwave, uncovered, on MEDIUM-HIGH (70%) for a further 5-6 min, stirring every minute with a wooden spoon, or until thick and golden.

4. Stand for 2 minutes or until bubbles subside. Add white chocolate.

Stir until chocolate melts, and the mixture is smooth. Pour hot fudge mixture into prepared pan. Stand at room temperature for 3 hours. Refrigerate until irm. Lift out onto a wooden board. Cut in squares.

The Liminality Celtic Trio are delighted to host their annual family Tecoma Christmas concert this year with special guest Cyril Moran.

Attendees can relax and unwind at an evening of ancient Celtic tunes performed by local group Liminality at the Tecoma Uniting Church.

Made up of harpist Cath Connelly, violinist Greg Hunt, and pianist Jules Vines, Liminality's music is described as deeply grounded in the Celtic and European traditions, and dwelling on the Celtic threshold.

Vines said the group had been touring for more than 15 years but wanted to return to the Dandenongs for their third Celtic Christmas performance.

Last year their show at Tecoma Uniting sold out within the first week so she urged people to book early.

"It's our way of giving back to the community, as we love performing in the Dandenongs and want to help people slow down and relax at Christmas," Vines said.

"We'll play ancient Celctic tunes, and of course a variety of Christmas carols, and there will also be special guest including the Victorian Irish Dance Academy, and they'll be performing some traditional Celtic dancing.

"We're all really looking forward to sharing this Christmas with our community."

The concert is made up of two 45-minute halves and Vines said Santa himself was expected to visit - being a fan of Celtic music.

"It's some pre-Christmas relaxation with some beautiful music, all in the spirit of Christmas," she said.

"We can't wait to share some musical presents." Tickets are $10 and supper is available for a gold-coin donation to the CFA. The performance will be held on 22 December at the Tecoma Uniting Church.

Protecting the pets Whether it's food, drink or spending, most people overindulge at Christmas time - and so can pets.

Animal Aid CEO Mark Menze said we might suffer no more than a stomach ache, sore head or frightening credit card balance, but the same couldn't be said for our pets.

Chocolate That tasty advent calendar or those bars of Toblerone wrapped nicely under the tree can be highly toxic to pets even in small quantities.

Nutmeg It's one of the lesser-known poisonous foods for dogs. Nutmeg can cause dogs to suffer from tremors, seizures, issues with the nervous system and even death.

Grapes and raisins Plum puddings, Christmas cake and mince pies all contain raisins and grapes. Consumption of these can cause acute kidney failure in dogs. Macadamia nuts These popular Christmas nuts can also be toxic to dogs.

Onions, chives and garlic Both onions and garlic can cause gastric irritation and anemia if eaten in large quantities.

Turkey skin, pork crackling, sausages and fatty meats These Christmas lunch staples are foods which can all lead to inflammation of the pancreas in dogs due to high fat content.

Christmas ham In addition to being high in fat, ham is also very salty and can cause serious stomach ache or pancreatitis. Also, some dogs that eat salty food may drink too much water and develop a lifethreatening condition called bloat.

With showings by local artists and a myriad of other performances, including bands and singing groups from the hills, there's lots of fun for the whole family.

At the end of night, it is rumoured that the big man in red himself - Santa - will arrive to spread some Christmas cheer.

Carols on the Mountain is held at Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve on Saturday 21 December from 6 to 9pm.

Firey in tribute As Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade's Chris Lind reflected on his Firefighter of the Year award, he dedicated it to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Chris received the prestigious award at the brigades annual dinner and awards night on 17 November, for his exceptional work ethic and recent efforts in NSW. He drove an 11,000-litre tanker to help fight fires during the state's unprecedented start to its bushfire season.

"There was one guy, in particular, I spoke to

up there and I said to him pretty much how are you going?" Chris recalled.

"He said I've been fighting this fire for five weeks and I've had two days off.

"They're doing it really tough up there and it sort of makes you want to go straight back up."

Some other notable awards recipients on the night included Darren Johson (10 years of service) and Peter Jetson (20 years of service).

Peter said he was surprised yet honoured to receive his service award.

"I honestly don't know what to say, I can't believe it's been 20 years since I rolled in," he said.

Upper Ferntree Fire Brigade Captain Peter Smith said the brigade is currently the "strongest it's ever been."

"We have over 1000 years of service in this room," he said.

The Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade is a Volunteer Fire Service and has served the community since 1926.

The Victorian Government will make a formal apology in Parliament to the people who suffered childhood sexual abuse in connection with the Puffing Billy railway and other railway bodies.

The state apology will be delivered at Parliament House at 10am on 27 November after a recommendation in the state ombudsman's report into the involvement of now-dead convicted child sex offender Robert Whitehead's with a number of train organisations.

"The Victorian Ombudsman's report detailed harrowing abuse perpetrated at Puffing Billy and other Victorian railways by people who held positions of power and trust," Tourism Minister Martin Pakula said on Friday.

"The victims were children who for too long felt unable to tell their stories, and when they did, too many people did not want to hear them."

"It is important that we acknowledge how these people were betrayed and say to them, we are sorry."

The report was tabled in June last year, and the Ombudsman's investigation was announced in 2017 after an initial call for an investigation was made by one of the victims, Mr Wayne Clarke.

The report centred on Robert Whitehead, a convicted sex offender who was a volunteer at Puffing Billy from 1961 until 1990.

He died in jail in 2015 after pleading guilty to 24 charges.

The Emerald Tourism Railway Board, responsible for operating Puffing Billy, and the attraction's chief executive, resigned earlier this year, with an interim group installed.

Victims and their families have been invited to be at Parliament House for the apology.

Cost of bushfires a concern for some

By Romy Stephens The Yarra Ranges hosts some of Australia's most at-risk suburbs when it comes to the financial loss from bushfires, new research shows.

According to consultancy Risk Frontiers, Warburton and Belgrave make up two of Australia's top 10 bushfire-prone postcodes in terms of average annual losses.

Meanwhile, the entire top 10 list comprised of Victorian suburbs.

Andrew Gissing from Risk Frontiers said the results reflect the nature of bushfire activity within the state.

"It's not necessarily a surprise because the whole of Victoria is pretty well fire-prone," he said.

"It's a mixture of the probability of having damaging fires but also the exposure.

"A lot of these properties are built right on the bushland which makes them high risk."

Mr Gissing added that this research provides the opportunity for residents within these regions to understand the risk and prepare accordingly.

"Acknowledge that there's a risk in their area and always be prepared for that," he said.

"There's still a few weeks before summer kicks off...now is the time to prepare."

Angliss celebrates 80th anniversary

By Derek Schlennstedt On November 21, staff and special guests gathered to mark Angliss Hospital's 80th anniversary.

Angliss Hospital began its life known as the Ferntree Gully Bush Nursing Hospital, opening in 1939. It started off with just ten beds, consisting of 2 two-bed wards and 6 single-bed wards.

There was also provision for two extra beds on the enclosed veranda. The hospital was the vision of Sir Gilbert Chandler and was funded

by Sir William Angliss.

It took just four months from the laying of the foundation stone to the hospital's opening day. In its first six months of operation, 154 patients were treated, with a daily bed average of six patients.

80 years on, the hospital has grown to 155 beds, providing the community with a range of emergency, medical, surgical, maternity and rehabilitation services.

Services have been expanded and there have been advancements in technology. Most recently, in 2018 the new intensive care unit was opened - introducing critical, life-saving treatment for people in the region.

During 2018/2019, Angliss Hospital emergency department provided care to over 44,000 patients, while the wards treated over 27,000 patients. There were over 35,000 episodes of outpatient care.

At the celebration Site Director Paul Leyden thanked the Angliss and Chandler families for their continued support and said that while much has changed during Angliss Hospital's 80 year history; one thing has stayed the same.

Bus crash charge Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have charged a man after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a bus in Ferntree Gully on 12 December 2018.

The collision occurred on the Burwood Highway just after 7.30pm.

The 38-year-old Ringwood man died at the scene.

The bus driver, a 60-year-old man from Woori Yallock, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death.

He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 20 November

On November 20 local police were called to Mooroolbark and Kilsyth addresses following reports of two alleged family violence incidents.

Shortly after, a 40-year-old Ringwood male was arrested by the Croydon Family Violence Investigation Unit and taken to Ringwood Police Station.

The male has been charged with aggravated burglary, burglary and theft offences.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

Investigators have been told a motorcycle and a four-wheel drive collided on Clegg Road near Union Road about 9.40am.

The rider of the motorcycle died at the scene.

The driver of the four-wheel drive, a 26-year-old Croydon woman, was uninjured.

The investigation into the exact cause of the collision remains ongoing.

Last week the Parks and Crown Legislation was introduced into the Victorian Parliament.

The Legislation provides significant benefit for the environment by enshrining in law greater protections through the Yellingbo Landscape Conservation Area.

Importantly we are creating further protection for the Helmeted Honeyeater by establishing the Yellingbo Landscape Conservation Area.

However, this isn't your typical conservation reserve. Unlike most conservation reserves, which consist of one large continuous block of land, the new conservation area will be made up of many narrow wildlife corridors that connect existing major reserves.

These are vitally important to animals like the Helmeted Honeyeater who need well vegetated corridors to move through to avoid predators.

Helmeted Honeyeaters have been making a comeback from near-extinction in Melbourne's eastern outskirts through a decadeslong program of initiatives to protect habitat and boost population numbers.

This change is just the next step that will ensure this vital habitat for one of our most iconic threatened species is preserved.

I was delighted to support this legislation, which is just one step as a part of our government's ongoing commitment to protect Victoria's native fauna and flora.

In 2017 we were able to add 2.3 hectares of land to the reserve, with all levels of government working together to secure the funding to purchase this land.

Importantly, it's not just our government who is working hard to protect the habitat of

the Helmeted Honeyeater, groups such as the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, now in their 30th year, are one of the key groups who are working to protect the future of the Helmeted Honeyeater.

The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater work to maintain an effective environment for the Helmeted Honeyeater, as well as educate the community on our State's bird emblems importance.

Trust for Nature is another important group who are acting to protect the Helmeted Honeyeaters environment.

Trust for Nature partners with local landholders who agree to place a conservation covenant over their property to permanently protect land of high diversity value.

They have also assisted in gifting land to the conservation reserve, using funds from philanthropic organisations.

These important actions and partnerships by groups, organisations and Government ensure that the Helmeted Honeyeaters key environment will be protected and that this work will protect our State's bird emblem for generations to come.

Five years ago, Shakti McLaren and a group of like-minded individuals had the vision to create an inspirational, sustainable food destination in the Dandenongs.

From their ideas grew The Hills Food Frontier - a volunteer based incorporated association that inspires, mobilises and equips the Hills community to choose, grow, share and eat good food. From that group grew the Food is free Tecoma project.

To celebrate the milestone, the Hills Food Frontier's FLAME Community Garden in Tecoma has been reinvigorated with new educational signs.

Ms McLaren told the Mail that the signs have made the garden more inclusive.

"When we set up this garden 5 years ago we wanted it to be educational, but we found it couldn't be educational unless we we're here all the time, which simple wasn't feasible," she said.

"Now with the signage its educational all the time, and people came come by themselves."

Several signs have been placed strategically around the garden, with each addressing gardening techniques, the effectiveness of good composting and the importance of pollination and bees.

The group collaborated with local design student Jordyn Yeoman from Mater Christi, and together Jordyn and Ms McLaren developed signs about worms, composts and pollinators.

"It was interesting to learn about gardening and bees and how important they are in the world, but it also taught me how to use illustrator a bit more and particularly gave me an insight into working with other people in the real world," Jordyn said.

"At school Viscomm is usually by yourself, so collaborating with other people and translating their needs into the design was a different experience. " The entire project was funded by the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank, who donated $1000 to THFF for the signs, which were printed by Frawley signs.

As part of the Community Bank's 20th birthday, each staff member was asked to nominate a not for profit community group that banked

with the Branch they work at.

Belgrave Customer Service Officer, Jenny Jury chose THFF as the recipient.

"All the staff were invited to choose a community group that they wanted to donate $1000 to and I chose the hills food frontier, because they're interested in good health and sustainable living."

Ms McLaren said the garden has been immensely successful in its five years and looked forward to how it will continue to grow.

"The aim was to grow food and make it free and it was really a revolution and still is ... the amount of people that give food is just amazing, and it's food for everyone. Anyone can use the space and the food."

Trees down as we bake

By Derek Schlennstedt Fierce winds uprooted trees on a day of extreme weather in the Dandenong Ranges, as the state baked through its equal-hottest November day this century, before thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the suburbs.

A day of Total Fire Ban across the state was declared for 21 November and Parks Victoria announced that the Thousands Steps were also closed to the public.

It was a one-two punch of strong northerly winds and hot temperatures early in the day, as gusts of more than 100 km/h kicked up dust and pollen while the city sweltered to a top of 40.9 degrees at 2pm - matching a November 1894 record.

At 4pm a Watch and Act notice was issued for a bushfire on Rankins Road, Monbulk with two aircraft called in to battle the 1-2 hectare blaze.

The bushfire crossed Rankins Road late on 22 November and travelled towards Spring Road and David Hill Road, Monbulk. It took over ten CFA crews to stop the spread of the fire, along with air support.

SES crews worked over time throughout the day with trees falling by the dozen.

Emerald SES Deputy Controller Steve Reid said the unit attended around 20 jobs for fallen trees.

"We had 20 jobs on the Thursday afternoon; the majority were trees down on road. There were three trees down on driveways and two were minor building damage," he said.

"We had a real rush in the afternoon around Emerald and Monbulk and are standing at 79 incidents since the start of November."

The region was struck with severe power outages across Mount Evelyn, Monbulk, Olinda and Menzies Creek. Over two and half thousand houses were affected in Mount Evelyn with the power only returning the following day on 23 November.

Mail photographer Greg Carrick caught the devastation and said that despite the area being without power at the time, the tree brought down more power lines with it, adding to the delays in getting power restored.

Residents secure land to protect species for future Landowners across the Yarra Ranges are taking legal steps to permanently protect endangered species by placing conservation covenants on their properties.

Conservation covenants are tied to title, protecting habitat even after the property changes hands.

Trust for Nature has partnered with more than 1400 landholders across Victoria to put covenants on properties, with 48 of those in the Yarra Ranges.

Ben Cullen from Trust for Nature said they are working to link habitat for native animals such as the threatened Helmeted Honeyeater and Leadbeater's Possum.

"We have a cluster of neighbouring properties adjacent to the Yellingbo Reserve that are protected by conservation covenants," he said.

"The covenants make a real difference because they mean that as urban pressures increase in the area we don't lose special environments that are critical to the survival of threatened species."

According to Trust for Nature, landowners with covenants can still keep animals, maintain their home, garden and lifestyle while protecting important areas.

"Many landholders we work with don't know a lot about conservation, and that doesn't matter at all," Ben said.

"They move to this area for its amazing natural beauty. It's a lifestyle choice for many - the landholders happen to also be critical in saving the Helmeted Honeyeater and Leadbeater's Possums from extinction.

"That's an incredible legacy and something they can be really proud of."

Trust for Nature is a not-for-profit organisation and one of Australia's oldest conservation organisations.

It was established by an Act of the Victorian Parliament in 1972 to protect habitat on private land.

Judge Samantha Cockfield, the Lead Director Road Safety at the TAC, said Kath’s coverage showed a willingness to go beyond the details of the program and explore some of the people involved in dealing with road trauma.

“From emergency service services and volunteers, to magistrates, Kath’s coverage included a comprehensive mix of stats and facts as well as human interest to truly put the focus on how we can all keep ourselves and others safe on the road,” Ms Cockfield said.

The York to rock it out The York on Lilydale will kick next year off in style with the Hotter Than Hell tour and Conrad Sewell set to rock the venue.

Australian raised and Los Angeles based Sewell will perform live at the York on 31 January.

Known for popular hits such as Healing Hands, Start Again and Firestone, the ARIA Award-winning, platinum-selling singer and songwriter has earned international acclaim and performed in front of audiences around the world.

He has toured with Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and Kygo and earned praise from Entertainment Weekly, Teen Vogue, Vice, NBC, and Nylon.

Sewell is now venturing across his home country for the Big World tour and Mount Evelyn will be one of his first stops.

The annual Hotter Than Hell tour will follow Sewell’s performance early next year, with the event to feature at the York on 8 February.

When Elena Houghlin (Naomi Scott), a gift-

ed but undervalued programmer, is targeted for assassination, she is recruited into the Angels, an elite organisation of female special agents.

The leading Angels, comprising Elena, Sabina (Kristen Stewart) and Jane (Ella Balinska), have strong, quirky personalities and extremely fun interplay. The film is also imbued with a wonderful sense of camaraderie and devoted support among its female characters, as they stand up against chauvinistic male adversaries.

The pacing is swift, the action is creativelystaged and generally easy to follow (save for a terribly over-edited early fight scene), and the plot steadily builds up to a brilliant twist.

The Angels are fashionable and sexy, but more as a by-product of their skills, strength, sassiness and need for camouflage, in a refreshingly tasteful approach after the pandering titillation of the '70s show and 2000 movie.

It's just a shame that the Angels' objective of retrieving a revolutionary new technology before it can be weaponised, while spelled out clearly, quickly gets lost amid the great character dynamics and action.

Despite a somewhat insubstantial driving conflict, Charlie's Angels is a fun, stylish and engaging ride.

Getting teens into tennis The Upwey South Tennis Club is encouraging teenagers to take advantage of the warmer weather and get active through playing tennis.

The club has launched its Tennis4Teens program for youth aged 12-17 years old.

The program has been developed by Tennis Victoria to keep participants active in a noncompetitive and social environment.

Club coach Diana Sutterby said the program is an opportunity for teenagers throughout the community to get involved.

"We are a thriving club and have built up a fantastic community and social vibe, with many juniors finding an inclusive, safe and fun place to have a hit," she said.

"Tennis is, after all, a game for life."

Tennis Victoria's head of female participation said the program represents what teenag-

ers want to get out of their physical activity.

"Research has shown us that this particular age group is keen for their sport to be social and flexible," she said.

"It's our hope that all the programs run under the Tennis4Teens umbrella encourage teenagers to pick up a racquet, get active and have fun," she said.

Tennis4Teens will run every Thursday from 4pm to 5.30pm from the 31 October onwards.

Costs are $5 a session and no prior experience is necessary. The club can also supply rackets.

Upwey South Tennis Club was established over 50 years ago and is located in the Upwey South Reserve.

Knights go big against Beavers with some solid scores

By Richard Millott Day One of Round 5 Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association action kicked off on Saturday, with big team scores the order of the day.

At Lakesfield Reserve, Zac Wilson put on a masterclass as Knoxfield took on Lysterfield.

The visitors looked in trouble early as the Beavers claimed regular breakthrough's against the top order, reaching 5/60 before Wilson and Lachlan Anderson (75) put on a 241-run stand.

Wilson was eventually dismissed for 176 in an innings that included 17 fours and six sixes.

Both innings were pivotal to the Knights turning their fortunes around, reaching 341 in the final over.

With the ball, Nathan Walsh led the way claiming 4/50 from 9.4 overs.

Belgrave travelled to The Basin in a highly anticipated matchup as the early form team

met with the reigning Premiers at Batterham Reserve.

Taking first use of the facilities, the Pies started well reaching 1/49 at the first drinks break.

However, Joey Hawke saw to it that the visitors would not run rampant, his 3/69 the pick of the bowling as Belgrave were dismissed for 205.

Upwey found runs in its away trip to Johnson Park, despite the efforts of the Sharks' bowling attack.

The Tigers kept momentum across the afternoon, with Cameron Wheeler (85) and Julian Whetstone both reaching centuries.

The Tigers ended the day on 272.

Jake Pollard reached an unbeaten 104* for Eildon Park against Ferntree Gully Footballers.

Early starts helped the Panthers tick along with runs before Pollard and Josh Dowling (74) combined. Dowling departed at 4/226 as

the Panthers chased quick runs to finish off on a big score. Pollard reaching his century and remaining there at the end as the home team were 8/313. With the ball for the Griffens, Hayden Betts was the pick with 3/47.

In the final game of the round, Knox Gardens finished on 243 against Upper Ferntree Gully.

In Decoite Shield, St Johns Tecoma's form continued on home soil, with the Saints reaching 7/321 against Olinda.

Kyle Chandler (57) notched up a half-century amongst the starts, the score reaching 4/159 before Blake Hughes came in to ignite the innings once again.

Hughes reached a 72-ball 88, including seven fours and six sixes before falling late in the innings.

For the Bloods, Peter Dean led with the ball, sending down 19 overs for a return of 3/69.

Monbulk look set for an early week next week after a strong performance against Knox

Gardens.

The Hawks bowlers relished the conditions, with Braden Tauber (4/25), Duncan Maher (3/32) and Craig Broekhof (3/46) all troubling the Falcons at various stages.

Monbulk reached stumps at 1/73, with Shane Cosstick reaching 34.

Mountain Gate had a number of contributions in its matchup against South Belgrave.

John Rozarkis reached 54, with contributions also from Shaun Morris (43), Sanitha De Mel (36) and Daniel Shaw (34).

Todd Burley claimed 3/83 for South to restrict the Gators to 238.

Relay teams impress at Eastern Metropolitan carnival

By Jamie Strudley Athletes from Yarra Ranges Athletics (YRA) continued the long tradition of combining to represent the club at the Little Athletics Victoria Eastern Metropolitan Relay Carnival on Sunday.

Teams of four raced across the wide range of events with the aim to make a final, win a medal and qualify for December's State Championships.

The event saw 20 teams, made up of 33 boys and girls, compete in the 4x100m, 4x200m and Sprint Medley (100/100/200/400m) races.

Yarra Ranges athletes competed against ten other clubs in a highly competitive day, made better by warm and clear conditions.

It was also the first opportunity for the under-9 athletes to compete in YRA colours.

Highlights of the day were the four medalwinning teams.

The Under-11 girls medley won gold, with team members comprising of Hannah Downward, Kaylah Paton, Emily Fiedler and Zoe Clarke.

Bronze went to the Under-11 mixed 4x200m, the Under-11 mixed 4x100m and the Under-16 girls medley.

On the day, coaches Sophie Todorov and Nick Fiedler, team manager Katie Clarke, and parents filled duties and provided support.

The regular weekly competition was also held on Saturday morning in bright sunshine at Morrison Reserve.

To continue celebrations for the club's 50 years of athletics, junior athletes enjoyed a break during competition to cut the birthday cake, sing the song and capture a group photo.

Past club memorabilia has been placed on show in the pavilion to allow visitors to view for the remainder of the summer season.

A big win for Monbulk

By Kylie Storer It was a blistering start from Monbulk Cricket Club's Under-12s on Friday night as they obliterated the Upway Tigers.

Straight bowling and accurate fielding had the balls flying as six of the 10 wickets fell to the bowler's arm.

Best bowling figures went to Kit Sutton who not only scored 2/5 off two overs but also took a catch and engineered a run-out.

Other bowling stats were impressive, with two wickets to Jed Fraser and singles to Ethan Knight, Noah Wyning and Toby Storer.

With only 35 runs to get, the side achieved the total in seven overs.

Top score was Ethan Knight with 15 runs, while Toby Storer and Tyler Williams were also impressive.

Monbulk 1 hit the road to take on Heatherdale and did not disappoint in a game the side was expected to win.

Richard Cookson's rink was level after eight ends, but then took control and jumped to a lead of 17 shots. They eventually won 28 to 16.

Eric Markham's rink held sway for most of the afternoon with Ivan Baric (2) and Karen Rice (3) bowling well.

They won 15 of 21 ends to end up claiming victory by 13 shots.

Andrew Bell's rink struggled early and trailed by six shots after 11 ends.

They then lifted their game, with Ian Ross (1), Matt Borkowski (2) and Geoff Petersen (3) bowling well, to grab the lead and finally win the game 20 to 14.

Brian Smith's rink started slowly but mounted a comeback.

The match see-sawed before the rink lost on the last end and went down by two shots.

Monbulk claimed overall victory, 90 to 61 and have maintained second place on the ladder.

Monbulk 2 played Yarra Glen at home and achieved maximum points by winning across all rinks.

Eric Furby's rink with Ron Sheppard (1), Andy Smith (2) and Peter Donders (3) began well and kept the pressure on to win by 18 shots.

Peter Francis' rink won the majority of ends to secure a comfortable 24 to 10 victory.

Norma Clerke's rink had a battle on their hands and trailed by six shots after 10 ends.

They then won nine of the next 11 ends to win by 11 shots.

Graeme Goller's rink withstood tough opposition to win 22 to 17.
