Three codes, 23 races Thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing will collide on Saturday 16 November for one action packed night of racing in Cranbourne. The City of Casey Tricodes has formed a reputation as the busiest race meeting in Australia, where patrons can watch 23 races unfold in the space of just five hours. The deck will once again be the place to be, where there will be acoustic music played throughout the night, as well as various drink specials for patrons to enjoy. Kids can also expect a wide range of free activities and entertainment on the night, including the mini pirate ship, teacup ride, jumping castle, pony rides and Kelly Sports. Children of all ages are bound to have a fan-

tastic, fun-filled night. Cranbourne Turf Club and Harness Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the unique Tricodes event, which is now in its 17th year, was one of the most exciting and highly anticipated events on the racing calendar. “There really is no other race meeting in the world like Tricodes night, with all three tracks lit up at the one venue and constant racing action throughout the night - it’s a racing enthusiast’s dream,” he said. “Cranbourne is one of the few, unique venues in this country that hosts all three codes and it’s great we’re able to bring them together for this event each year to showcase what’s great about Cranbourne.

“Racing plays a huge part in the City of Casey, with thousands of participants involved in the three codes as trainers, jockeys, drivers, owners, employees and enthusiasts. “Tricodes is a great way to celebrate and showcase our industry participants and their sports, and provide an outstanding night out that people of all ages can enjoy.” Chief executive of the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club Amanda Frey also said: “Cranbourne is the only venue in Australia that has a race night that hosts all three codes simultaneously. “This Tricodes event started in 2002 and it is great that we can still bring the greyhounds, turf and harness (racing) all together on one

night and showcase it here at the Cranbourne Racing Centre.” Racegoers are encouraged to embrace the ‘country casual’ concept, where they can enjoy backing a winner from the various bars and bookmakers on course. There will also be plenty of outside, grandstand seating available for those looking to watch the races from an ideal, undercover spot. Parking is free. Gates will open at 4pm for the only night of its kind in Australia. The first race will be run at 6.10pm, with the last race scheduled for 10.35pm.

Willo power wins By Brendan Rees Cranbourne-born jockey Craig Williams has etched his name in the history books after clinching Australia’s greatest race. The 42 year-old finally had his breakthrough Melbourne Cup win in his 15th attempt after piloting home Australian-bred horse Vow and Declare at Flemington on Tuesday 5 November. “A credit to Vow and Declare, he just gave me a beautiful ride,” the former Cranbourne primary and secondary school student told the media after the thrilling race finish. “Danny O’Brien, the trainer, gave me no instruction, he just said trust the horse, trust you, they’ve done a great job, it’s amazing teamwork, and I can’t do it without around me. “I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity ... I will really enjoy this,” he said. It caps off a stellar year for Cranbourne’s favourite son, who rode Dr Drill to victory in the $400,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup on 13 October. Williams is a world-renowned rider and has won Group One races in Hong Kong, France, Dubai, the UK and Japan. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Nail Bainbridge was thrilled for the champion jockey, who he described as hardworking and the “ultimate professional”. “I think everyone involved with him in Cranbourne would be just delighted for him,“ he said. “His family, they’ve had a great association with the Cranbourne racing industry for a long time - to win his first Melbourne Cup, it’s tremendous. “His brothers are still involved locally along with his dad,” he said, adding his nieces and nephews attended school in Cranbourne “so it’s a big family occasion”. Mr Bainbridge said Williams had always been a good supporter of the club and “only too happy to help out”. “He’s always out there walking the tracks, he puts in the hard yards; he deserves every success he gets,” he added. Geoff Whiffin, chairman of the Cranbourne Turf Club, said he and his wife Nolene Whiffin were close friends with the Williams family and

also used to babysit Craig as a boy. “Craig used to come away on holidays with us... he was a big fat tubby little fella and nobody thought he’d make a jockey,” he laughed. He described Williams’ Melbourne Cup win as a “fantastic dedication,” adding “What he seems to put his mind to he does.” “We’re very proud of him.“ Mrs Whiffin, who went to school with Williams’ mother Glenda, added: “He’s a great ambassador for the racing industry; he’s just a true little gentleman”. As a lad, Williams’ school nickname was ‘Willo’, and to others ‘Suey’. “It’s short for a horse my Dad trained at the time. I was small and could run fast and the

horse was small and fast, so I became Suey,” Williams told the News in 2008 after his Cranbourne Cup win on Majestical. Williams’ family has a long and successful history in racing. He started his career as an apprentice in 1993 for his father Allan, who was also a successful jockey. His mother, Glenda, is a daughter of veteran Cranbourne training identity, the late Tommy Harrison. Craig was still at school when won his first Cranbourne Cup on Main Strike for his father and he remains the youngest jockey, at 17, to win the feature event. He now has all four major racing trophies in his cabinet - adding the famous three-handled gold loving cup to his Caulfield Cups on South-

ern Speed and Dunaden, Cox Plates on Fields of Omagh and Pinker Pinker and Golden Slipper on Miss Finland. He was to have ridden Dunaden in 2011 when it won the Cup but missed through suspension. Back in 2008, after Majestical's win in the local feature race, Williams spoke of his ambition to win Australia's most famous race. "I've won the Melbourne Cup eight times, but it's all in my dreams," he laughed. "It's a race that eludes so many people. Scobie Breasley won five Caulfield Cups but never a Melbourne Cup." He vowed and declared he would one day win the race - and now has.

Punched, robbed just selling phone

A P-plater who police say had a blood-alcohol reading of .257 per cent, was "swerving all over the road" when he was caught in Narre Warren. The 22 year old driver allegedly blew more than five times the legal limit just before 3am on Sunday 3 November. Police say the driver was travelling about 40km/h in an 80km/h zone on Narre WarrenCranbourne Road. His licence was immediately suspended and his car was impounded for a period of 30 days at the cost of $1005. A police spokesperson said he was expected to be charged on summons with drink-driving.

By Brendan Rees A man has been punched in the stomach and robbed after trying to sell his mobile phone to a stranger in a Bunnings carpark in Cranbourne North. Vin, who did not wish to reveal his surname, had advertised his iPhone XS on Facebook Marketplace. He said a man expressed interest in buying the phone and arranged to meet him at the Bunnings Warehouse carpark on Tuesday, 16 October. "Everything seemed alright, he was asking me all the right questions," Vin said. "I did a video for him to assure him I was legit as well. He said 'yeah cool, sounds good' and we agreed on $1450." The pair met, shook hands and the prospective buyer, who went by the name of Darren, appeared respectful, Vin explained. "I didn't have a charger with it so I gave him one ... and a brand new set of head phones that came with my upgraded phone. "He said 'How much did we agree on again? And that's when I clicked; we agreed on $1450 and then that was it, he punched me and then ran. "I was a bit startled because I didn't expect it," Vin said, adding "It hurt my ribs but it wasn't a hard punch. "I jumped into my car and chased him around the Bunnings carpark and then I caught up with him around the corner." At this stage Vin said the man had met up with another male near the loading docks. "I went on the gutter and tried to block them in with my car. "There wasn't anything I could do, I wasn't going to get out of my car because there were

"As they were walking away they were laughing and putting their middle finger up, and calling me a faggot. I burst into tears, what could I do? "I was put through hell in high school. It just re-triggered everything from high school ... it keeps replaying in my head." Vin has started a petition on change.org calling for tougher sentencing of offenders. "There is no justice in the Australian justice system. The police do their job and the system lets us down. We need to make changes to the system," the petition says, which has attracted nearly 400 signatures. The man is described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, five-foot-10 in height, stocky build, short hair and aged between 16 and 19 years.

Suspicious fire investigated A suspicious fire, which took hold in a shed in Narre Warren North is now being investigated by police. A total of eight CFA trucks responded to a premises at the corner of Hallam-Belgrave Road and Narre Warren North Road just before 12.40am on Friday morning. It's understood the fire was contained within minutes but police were called due to the suspicious nature of the blaze. A 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman both managed to evacuate the building uninjured. The investigation into the exact cause of the blaze remains ongoing. Anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area, or with information is urged to contacted Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.

Olive Healey could be one of Casey's oldest women after celebrating a milestone - her 105th birthday. She was born on the 3 November 1914, in Fitzroy, when the First World War began and only two years after the Titanic had sunk. Olive celebrated her birthday at Homestyle Aged Care Langford Grange in Cranbourne East on Friday 1 November. Olive has one sister and married in 1938 and had two children - Christine Moody and Barry Healey, and four grandchildren and there is "too many great grandchildren to count". She came into care at Homestyle Langford Grange in August 2019 after living in her unit by herself where she had home care come

once a fortnight. "Olive doesn't look a day over the age of 80 years," Lifestyle coordinator Karen Smith says. She enjoys reading the newspaper each day and walking with the aid of a walker and assistance from staff. "Olive is an active person as she played lawn bowls for over 30 years as she was a member to Bentleigh Lawn Bowls," Ms Smith says. She also knits and sews for her family. She gave up driving a car in her 80's due to health but remembers fondly when her grandson received her car. "Olive you have seen a lot of changes in your life but the one thing that hasn't change is you will still have a Happy Birthday on the 3 November," Ms Smith says. "Enjoy your day!"

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested a woman following an online market place rental scam. "The 28-year-old woman allegedly placed an advertisement for a rental property on Leopold Crescent in Hampton Park and took deposits and a month's rent in advance from several prospective renters," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. "When victims attempted to move into the property the locks had been changed and the woman was nowhere to be seen." Police believe the woman also allegedly took deposits from victims in relation to a property on Glendon Road in Junction Village which was falsely advertised for sale in July this year. The woman was interviewed by police and has been released pending further enquiries. The scam involved a substantial amount of money and investigators are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or they can file a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

Casey investigates fines By Brendan Rees and Cam Lacadou-Wells Casey Council is assessing whether it has experienced a shortfall of uncollected fines as a result of State agency Fines Victoria's IT debacle. "The City of Casey has a number of processes in place for recovering debt," Casey manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said. "We are still assessing the impact of the IT glitch experienced by Fines Victoria". Meanwhile Greater Dandenong has a short-

fall of nearly $8.8 million in uncollected fines mainly consisting of parking infringements, as well as planning and building breaches and local law penalties for littering and animal control breaches. They date back to 30 June 2019. Fines Victoria has blamed software issues, which has led to a multi-million-dollar backlog of fine notices that haven't been sent to the would-be recipients. Other councils such as Hobsons Bay and

By Brendan Rees Students of Lynbrook's Saint Francis De Sales Primary School have put their best foot forward when it comes to healthy habits and keeping active. On the morning of Thursday 31 October students walked to school as part of VicHealth's Walk to School program where they were greeted by Melbourne Stars' Starman mascot and Lottie the Lollypop Lady mascot at the school gate. The school has been promoting walking, riding and scooting since the start of Term 4. The school's Walk to School leader Rachel Lenko said students met at 8am at the Lynbrook Community centre and Figtree Reserve and walked to school together. "Our parents and friends group chipped in by organising fruit and bottles of water which were generously donated by Bendigo Bank and Woolworths," she said. Students also donned colours of Ghana's flag in West Africa as gold donations were made to help communities in Ghana through Catholic missions. Fourteen schools in Casey have taken part in the program which started on 7 October.

By Brendan Rees Two people were assessed by paramedics after a car fire in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 5 November. Emergency services were called to the fire at the Bunnings Warehouse carpark on Thompsons Road about 2.20pm. A man and woman who tried to put the fire out were assessed by paramedics but neither were taken to hospital. Two fire appliances from Cranbourne fire brigade and a truck from Narre Warren fire brigade were on scene. The fire was brought under control in just less than 10 minutes. A CFA spokesman said it was not known how the fire started but it's believed three cars were involved. Timber pallets also caught fire, the spokesman said.

Connecting the Cranbourne Cup with the Melbourne Cup In 1865, Toryboy was an 8-year-old grey gelding, competing in the Melbourne Cup for the third time. (In all, he raced in five Melbourne Cups). No horse before or since has won this race at an older age. On the Sunday before the ‘cup’, Patrick Miley trialled the horse over two miles at what he thought was a quiet time and recorded 3 minutes 44 seconds, a most promising effort indeed. In those days the race was held on a Thursday. History records how Toryboy won the race, backed from 100/1 to start at 25/1 from the favourite, ‘Panic’, its connections losing a bizarre protest when the jockey alleged a ‘crossing’ interference at some stage. Toryboy had won by four Lengths (ref Millers Guide) in the very same time of 3.44 as his time trial. His light-weight jockey was Eugene Cavanagh, a fourteen-year-old schoolboy who confirmed his ability by riding the runner-up in the ‘cup’ the following year. Whereas it is said that the Melbourne Cup trophy was not attractive and was sold, Colin’s family has information that it was donated to the Melbourne Hunt Club, now inscribed as the Melbourne Hunt Club Cup and was awarded to the 1873 winner, Babbler. It was subsequently sold by ‘Christies’ and in now owned by wine merchant, Wolf Blass. Also of relevance to the Toryboy story, 1867 saw the inaugural two-day meeting of the Cranbourne Turf Club in April, the main event being a two-mile handicap which Toryboy also won as a 10-year-old. This event has become the Cranbourne Cup, now staged for more than 150 years and the Turf Club has continued

Evening to book in By Brendan Rees Former Home and Away actress and acclaimed author Judy Nunn is making her way to Bunjil Place. She will discuss her new best-selling book, Khaki Town on Thursday 21 November at 7pm at the Bunjil Place Function Centre. The historical novel is set in Queensland during World War II, and is inspired by a true wartime story that has remained a well-kept secret for over seventy years. It's March 1942. Singapore has fallen and Darwin has been bombed. Australia is on the brink of being invaded by the Japanese Forces. "It's a pretty terrifying time," Ms Nunn explains, adding there were "huge racial problems" in Townsville between America's white and black soldiers. "Segregation was a very big part of course in America. The Civil rights Act didn't come in for well over 20 years later," she says. "Many black American soldiers arrived very early on. They were there literally as a labour force to build the airstrips that would acquire for the massive amount of aircrafts -the bombers and the fighter planes" But Nunn says the black soldiers were welcomed by the people of Townsville, who didn't care "what colour's going to save us". "They could walk into a pub and have a beer with a white bloke who didn't mind at all. "But the white Americans didn't like it. They were accustomed to the practice of segregation so they took it out on the black soldiers," she says. The Australian Government, she says, also stood by their White Australia policy at the time, saying they didn't want America sending any black soldiers to which the American president at the time Franklin D. Roosevelt said "well if you don't take our black soldiers you're not getting any soldiers" Ms Nunn says.

The Christmas spirit has begun early at a Cranbourne early learning centre as children and staff strive to help an animal shelter. Bliss Early Learning has been busy collection dog and cat food donations for the Cranbourne Lost Dogs' Home. Staff member Danielle Brocklehurst said children in the kinder room had been talking about careers with a few putting their hand up to be a veterinarian. "They talked about pets their own pets and how some got lost over the Christmas and New Year period, when fireworks or thunder storms could make dogs scared and run away," she said. German Shepherd Kai and Maltese cross Pomeranian Toto visited the kids at the centre as part of their learning and discussion. Ms Brocklehurst said it was pleasing to see the children take an interest in giving to others in need at Christmas time. "It's so important that we give to local charities that look after these animals all throughout the year not just Christmas time," she said. "The shelter helps hundreds of family's be reunited with their pets after escaping or getting lost in the area. "The children at Bliss Early Learning really loved having the dogs visit and setting up a play area as a veterinary centre as part of their learning experience," she added. A wheelie great day out By Brendan Rees Getting out and about on bicycle was a feeling like no other for these special needs students. Narre Warren's Dandenong Valley Special Development School enjoyed a world of fun when students took to the criterium cycling track at Casey Fields on Tuesday 22 October. The day featured a jumping castle, sausage sizzle and bike riding with the help of Casey Cycle Club volunteering their time on the day. Each classroom provided their own activities for the students including puzzles and colouring in sheets. They also had the opportunity meet with police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon also attended. Teacher Robert Fong said the day was designed to help students become familiar with new surroundings. "It's important that students get as many opportunities as possible to be outdoors, enjoying some exercise and engaging with the community in a calm and controlled environment," he said.

Inspiration to share “THE SCRIBE TRIBE” BOOK LAUNCH Last week the Writers of Balla Balla launched their anthology; “The Scribe Tribe“. The book is an inspiring collection of stories and poems all written by “The Writers of Balla Balla“ and driven by Roderic Grigson who put forward the idea and gained the support of the Balla Balla Centre manager Maree Cullinan, president Andy Reid and his committee and aided by a City of Casey grant. It was 5pm on 12 July 2013 when a man wielding a 20-centimetre carving knife entered Bridget and Dermot O'Toole's jewellery store in Hastings. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

PERSON OF THE WEEK - DALE BELL Dale is a “born and bread” Tooradin person. She has lived in Tooradin all her life, and her parents ,grandparents and great grandparents, have lived in the area too. Dale is a major driver of the Tooradin Bazaar and has been for all of her life. The Bazaar began 1903, and Dale’s family have been part of it ever since then; passed on from generation to generation and sees each year arts and crafts lovingly and creatively prepared and along with fresh fruit and vegies, locally baked good and 2nd hand items all sold at an affordable cost. Dale is very much a community person, attends Christ Church Tooradin (where the craft group meet to prepare their art and craft items for the Annual Bazaar on the first Saturday of each month at the Church Hall). Dale and her husband Graeme have been heavily involved in local matters, particularly the Tooradin Sports’ Club, which they were actively involved in supporting and growing. The strong commitment by Dale to ensure that the Bazaar and her family’s legacy continues combined with her strong organisational skills and her ability to bring people together is so very appreciated by all who know her and a significant reason why the Bazaar is sill running today. Dale Bell is an unsung hero and should be congratulated! A vision for 2020 Business consultant Ian Ash was helping public relations professional Ros Weadman understand and improve her businesses cash flow when they struck upon an idea. After establishing a successful made-tomeasure bridal and evening wear business in Sydney, she has since opened a second business that is helping clients feels better, one wearable achievement at a time. And Christeen sees the improvements in her clients’ mental health through their work at Sew and Sew Sewing School as her biggest accomplishment. Over 15 years of teaching sewing in her Narre Warren North studio, Christeen noticed that many of the women who attended were suffering from depression and mental illnesses. It was this that led her to branch out into the online world, creating an online beginners sewing course so her clients could continue to reap the benefits of sewing without having to leave the house on days where their mental health was suffering. “When they would call, I would say jump on your sewing machine and they would call me at the end of the day to thank me, saying it’s

The online course is tailored for those wanting to learn to sew at home without any pressure, with clients having up to six months to complete it, and has a an online discussion group so participants can encourage each other and share photos of what they have made. “I’m so passionate about the mental health course, I feel like this is what I was put on this earth to do. I’ve seen the benefits. When they get involved with sewing, they clear their mind of all their worries and it gives their brain time to heal,” Christeen said. In last month’s article I wrote about the role that passion plays in building businesses but cautioned that this alone is not sufficient to grow a thriving enterprise. There is no shortage of advice out there to tell aspiring entrepreneurs what they apparently must have in order to be successful, but what really matters and where do they go to find out how to access this information? It is a seemingly paradoxical fact that people don’t start businesses because they’re good at business, they start them because they’re passionate about a product or service and/ or have great skill or competency in the domain. Passion and competence are definitely prerequisites but not sufficient on their own to achieve a successful and sustainable business. Much in the same way that you can’t expect kids to learn new subjects properly unless they can read and write, so a business needs to have the fundamentals established so that it can grow sustainably. What I have learned over the years is that the starting point should be a documented business strategy that defines where the company is going and what few things need to be done outstandingly well in order for the business to achieve its defined goals, i.e. the “basics”. This is best created on a single page to enable focus, keep things simple and should consider what I refer to as the 'Six Foundations for Sustainable Business': People and culture Finance Leadership Customer Focus Systems and Processes Marketing Since we typically don’t have time to develop all of these to a great depth, what’s important here is that each one is considered with respect to where the business is going so that any required gaps can be identified. For example, the ‘Finance Foundation’ might answer questions like: “what sales revenue do I want to achieve this year?”, “how much profit do I need?”, “how should I define my company budget?” and “how will I monitor and report on financial performance?”. The ‘Marketing Foundation’ might address questions like: “how do I want to be perceived by prospective customers?”, “when should I have my web page available” and “to what extent should I make use of social media?”. Some of these may be tough to answer but at least surfacing these and thinking about what’s really important to the business will help prioritise your actions and enable you to develop a realistic and reasonable plan to achieve. Day of punters and picnics By Brendan Rees Thousands of racegoers soaked up some glorious sunshine at Cranbourne racecourse on Melbourne Cup Day. Some 3,500 to 4,000 visitors flocked to the track on Tuesday 5 November for live racing action and entertainment. Racegoers embraced a country casual attire as they enjoyed backing a winning from bars and bookmakers on course. On the lawn, the champagne flowed as families rolled their picnic rugs and enjoyed all the action from the mounting yard to the winning post. All eyes turned to the big screen for the big race at Flemington Racescourse where Cranbourne's favourite son Craig Williams won his first ever Melbourne Cup on 'Vow and Declare.' For the second year in a row time this year, food vendors also vied for their share in cash and prizes for the best cooked barbecues in a Barbecue Turf Wars competition. Fun for the kids included carnival rides, jumping castle, pony rides and dodgem cars. Backing the Melbourne Cup winner was an elated Devon Langhans of Officer who took home $5,000. "I thought it was gone and it fought hard. It was unbelievable; really happy," he said, after placing a $500 bet for the win. "I've been watching its replays at Eagle Farm and watched its replay at the Caulfield Cup ... . proven over the distance so I said 'I can't see it losing, got Australia's best jockey on it' and yeah just showed it. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Nail Bainbridge said the club was delighted with crowd numbers and thanked the weather gods for smiling down. "Today's been a good day, the weather's turned out pretty good ... great day race wise and the barbecue wars that were on as well added bit of flavour literally to the event," he said. "This is the third time we've only ever raced on Melbourne cup Day. Last year we had two inches of rain so pretty much washed the show out so I think it'll only continue to grow. "We rolling into Tri-Codes on Saturday week which is always a big night for the club,â€? Mr Bainbridge added, where thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing come together for one ultimate night of non-stop racing action. He expressed his delight in Cranbourneborn Craig Williams winning the Melbourne Cup. "It's great that an Australian trainer won Australia's biggest race, Australian bred horse, Australia jockey," he said.

Therapy art with heart By Brendan Rees Anne Atkin was initially gobsmacked when she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease 15 years ago at the age of 55 but was determined to fight the neurological disease. She started Painting with Parkinson's, an art therapy class for people living with the disease which runs classes every Wednesday at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. "Art is beneficial for everyone. Parkinson's affects the brain and art and painting is good for the brain," Anne says. "After four sessions, people realise they are more relaxed and they can find their own level of creativity.

Anne's group started in Cranbourne in 2006 "as a bit of an experiment," but through vari-

ous grants "all of a sudden we were able to pay the rent for a room at the Old Cheese Factory." "This is a stunning place with beautiful buildings and gardens. "I now live in Warragul and my husband drives me to Berwick so I can continue the program. I never get bored and it has been part of my life for nearly 15 years- ever since I was diagnosed with Parkinson's," Anne says. On Saturday 23 November, her group will hold a fundraiser named 'Picnic in the Park' which will be held at the Old Shop at the Old Cheese Factory. The day will feature an exhibition of the group's paintings for sale, face painting, home-

made cards, a sausage sizzle, and soft drink. "People can bring their own picnic baskets and we'll put out some tables and chairs," Anne says. All money raised will go towards Parkinson's Victoria and Painting with Parkinson's. "Both organisations are not-for-profit charities and money will be used for research and to help us with art material." The exhibition will take place in the Hey Shed room and there will also be beautiful cards for sale as well as raffle tickets for some great prizes. The day will run from 10am to 1pm. Costs will be $2.50 for a sausage in bread and $1.50 for a can of drink.

Police are urging the public to be on the lookout after brazen thieves stole at least four within a week in Cranbourne East. Father of three Leroy Taylor said he was awoken by a noise outside his Tangemere Way home about 4am on Wednesday 30 October. He ran out to discover thugs rolling his Commodore out of his driveway before another car helped push start it. A nearby sedan believed to be a black SS Commodore sedan then "rammed into the back of my red car and pushed him up the road" and drove towards Linsell Boulevard. "They desperately wanted this car; they weren't prepared to leave it behind," he said. Mr Leroy said his car was insured but the inconvenience of being without a car was a "major one". "I'm a truck driver so I don't earn ridiculous amounts of money," he said, explaining without overtime pay he and his wife would struggle to pay their mortgage. Victoria Police spokeswoman Sergeant Megan Stefanec said police found the two vehicles about 4.45am and followed them along Berwick-Cranbourne Road and Fishers Road in Clyde North before losing sight of the cars. "The black Commodore was located by police abandoned nearby and an investigation is ongoing," Sgt Stefanec said. "Investigators are urging anyone with dash cam footage of the vehicles or anyone with any information about the location of the red Commodore sedan with registration YTB417 to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log into www.crimestoppersvic.com.au." Meanwhile, Dirshani Jacob got the shock of her life when her husband's car, a silver Ford Falcon, was stolen from their Scotsdale Drive driveway as he was about to go to work. Ms Dirshani said her husband had started his car about 5.20am on Monday 28 October when he realised he had forgotten his coffee. He left the car running while he went inside his home. "He left everything in the car, he jumped out, ran in, got the coffee; was like a minute," she said. "He came back and said to me 'the car's stolen.' I just thought he was joking. I went out there and sure enough it was gone." Sgt Stefanec said the investigation into this car theft was ongoing. "Police are appealing for anyone with information as to the location of the silver Ford Falcon with registration UEL954, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log into www.crimestoppersvic. com.au," he said. Two days earlier on the 26 October an SS Commodore had been taken from a Cranbourne East home about 4.15am after thieves smashed the rear window. It was found a few days later dumped in a paddock in a Cranbourne Estate and doused in petrol but not set alight, the owner, Blackie, said. Another resident said on Facebook their neighbour's car, an SS Commodore model, was stolen two weeks ago on Nelson Street in Cranbourne East. Frightful for little horrors By Brendan Rees The Old Cheese Factory Berwick transformed into a playground of horrors for Halloween on Thursday 31 October. Some 3500 people gathered for City of Casey's Spook-tacular event for the celebration, dressed in their scariest attire. There were activities, entertainment, roving characters and music for the whole family as the sun went down. Fun included slime making, cupcake decorating, teddy bear hospital, bone dig, and a jumping castle. There was also a Melbourne Football Club handball activity, Casey Comets and Aldi Mini Roo's soccer activity, and Casey Basketball inflatable hoops. But it was Dinomania's Real Dinosaurs stage show that stole the night. After seeing the dinosaurs on stage kids got the chance to meet the dinosaurs after the show.

The Holt train returns... By Nick Creely Beware AFL Outer East Premier division defenders. The Holt train is back, and ready to kick mountains of goals once more for his beloved Cranbourne. The legendary Marc Holt - who crossed over the 1000-goal mark for the Eagles in Round 13, 2018 - will once again stand at the Marc Holt End of Casey Fields in 2020, in a major coup for the Outer East competition that is still building after its first season. Holt departed the Eagles at the end of 2018, spending one season at Karingal in Division Two of the MPNFL, enjoying another incredible season of a legendary career, netting 85 goals from 20 matches to help the Bulls into a grand final - including an 11-goal haul against Somerville. But Holt is home, and Cranbourne president Shane Baker couldn’t be more delighted to welcome back the legendary figure, which is sure to bring people streaming through the gates. “It’s a really exciting time for the club - Marc said that he wanted his last game to be in blue and gold, and you can see the social media activity that one bloke can create,” he told Star News. “He left for a year with our blessing - he’s now back at Cranbourne, he’s raring to go, and looking pretty fit. “It’s creating a lot of excitement among supporters and members, and it’ll drive some real excitement around the place in 2020. “Where he left off, one of his last games was when he kicked 1000 goals - it’ll certainly draw people through the gate, and into local footy, and that’s what is needed. “He probably did that at a bit at Karingal, but when it comes down to the faithful at Cranbourne, that’s his home, and I think people will certainly buy into the fact that he’s cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Cranbourne through-and-through. “He’s arguably our greatest ever player, because none of us were around to see everyone play together, he’s just a draw card. “You don’t get too many characters like that in local footy - to have that charisma to get people intrigued and interested whether you like it or not. “The Akermanis’ of the day create interest, and Holty creates that at a local level. He creates interest, and hopefully it brings people to the opposition grounds as well to have a look at him.” Baker said that the new surroundings Holt is expected to face in the Outer East competitions - which will see him strut his stuff at grounds such as Woori Yallock, Olinda, and Wandin, as well as the traditional south-east grounds in Doveton, Berwick, Beaconsfield, Narre Warren, Pakenham, and of course Cranbourne - is something that the sharpshooter is excited about. “I’d imagine some of those smaller grounds up there, they’ll probably have to put a couple on him in the goal square,” he joked. “I think it’s all part of everybody’s challenge and way forward is to play different grounds, different standards. “For the whole group this year was a bit of a challenge, and they recognized they needed to change the game style, and Marc will be a part of that, and the footy will come in a lot quicker, that’s for sure.” While Holt gave his all in his season at the Bulls, Baker said that the Cranbourne cultfigure always wanted to finish his career at the club he calls home, and to kick his final goal in front of the Eagles faithful. “At the end of the season, after the grand final, we had a bit of a chat then, and he had obviously been thinking about for a while, and he just said to me ‘I don’t want my last game to be in red and white, I want it to be in blue and gold’, so I just said, ‘let’s make it happen’.

“He had to talk to Karingal, so we just kept it under our lid until he was ready, and he did the right thing by those guys. “We’ve been talking for five, six weeks credit to the Karingal guys, the way he spoke to them and explained that he needed to finish his career at Cranbourne, they gave him their blessing.” Baker also confirmed that the Eagles are set to welcome back an influx of former players to the club as they launch for a massive 2020 season in the Premier Division. “Curtis Barker has signed with us, so he’ll be back at Cranbourne next year,” he said. “Troy Tharle is back from Cora Lynn, Mitch Lindsey is coming back after a stint with Mornington and Pearcedale, so they’ll be a benefit to us. “We’ve picked up Rylan Smith out of Cora Lynn as well - he’s a young 22-year-old, tall, athletic type.” Baker said that with the returning players such as Holt and Tharle in particular, as well as the development of its emerging list and core group, the excitement is building at Casey Fields. “We’ve got a really young, exciting list,” he said. “It’s the one thing that ‘Obi’ (Steve O’Brien) has really reiterated - they took us a fair way against the odds a bit with the experience they had last year. “We really think we’ve got the crop of a really good side - to add the experience of Holty, Curtis and Troy back into the side, with the younger blokes, we think it’s just going to complement what we’ve already got. “To have a key target up forward, some experience in the middle, and someone that can spring through the ruck and up forward in Troy is really important. “We’re excited about what we’ve got, and it’ll generate a lot of interest around the place, it’s a good time.”

Demons set for the top By Romy Stephens The Casey Demons' Victorian Netball League (VNL) side is preparing to go one step further next year, by adding some top-tier talent to its ranks. After losing this year's VNL grand final to Geelong, the Demons have signed a handful of new players in a bid to increase their depth. Some notable additions include Victorian Fury goaler Sacha McDonald and Collingwood Magpies training partner Sharni Lambden. Both girls have ties to the club, with McDonald being the sister of Melbourne Football Club's Tom and Oscar McDonald, and Lambden living locally in Cranbourne. Casey VNL head coach Robynn Pym said she can't wait to see what the girls bring to the side. "We had a great year in Championship but also we had a lot of our Division 1 players fill the spaces in our Championship group," she said. "We had a drive to fill those spots with Championship-level players and of course getting into a grand final helps you attract those players." The Demons have also added Georgia Vines and tall defender Stephanie Boyce to their stocks. Vines previously played with the Boroond-

Emma Ryde, Kassidy Withers and Shannon Blackman. But the loss of Christie Hillberg will leave a gap in wing defence, likely to be filled by Lambden. Robyn said she felt as though the grand final loss came after players "were a bit cooked,"

considering the team's bench was filled with Division 1 players. She said the new players will hopefully allow the team to claim its maiden VNL grand final and also help develop talent that is knocking on the Championship team's door. "This year, we've been very conscious that some of those kids are not quite up to that standard yet but they would give us a quarter," she said. "They put their heart and soul into it, so we want to make sure that we can still develop those athletes." The Demons are also working hard off the court as they look to strengthen ties with the local community heading into next year. The club recently donated $1000 to the YMCA Open Doors Charity from the ticket sales of its three home games this year. YMCA Casey Cares director Tori Norris said the amount donated will assist five disadvantaged children by allowing them access to swimming lessons. "Water safety is an essential skill to have, particularly heading into the warmer weather," she said. "It warms our hearts to have the opportunity to give these children, who otherwise wouldn't have the access, the ability to learn fundamental water-based skills that they can utilise for the rest of their lives."

The Division 2 outfit was at Fountain Gate, hosting Cardinia Waters (as the Saturday team did). Reg Johnstone, Gary Wilson, Wilma Stevenson and Geoff Miller scored well late in the game to win 27-16. Eric Sydenham, Geoff Ampt, Wally Finlayson and Jim Millar won the last two ends when level, to win 20-16, as did Alan Mark, Reg Young, Joe Selfridge and Colin Groom (19-16). Narre Warren (1) 16-66 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 0-48. Division 4 visited Cranbourne RSL but suffered a loss. The highlight was a win by Arthur Fitt, Susan Ellery, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom (25-14); while Steve Hyam, Keith Mark, Paul McNamara and Jos van Hout just missed (15-17) while making a comeback. The weather seemed the only winner for Saturday Pennant. Three of Narre Warren’s teams had their games abandoned due to rain. The only team to play was Division 5, under the roof at Dandenong Club. Unfortunately the result was disappointing. Darren Moore, Janice Moran, Peter Castricum and Glen Cadman was the only winning rink (23-20), while Toa Retzlaff, Paul McNamara, Peter Wilson and John Uren (13-26), Joe McGuire, Dermot McConville, Susan Ellery and Jos van Hout (13-23) and Arthur Fitt, Ernesto Vergara, Luca Klarica and John Zanon (10-34) all lost. Narre Warren (3) 2-59 lost to Dandenong Club (3) 16-103.
