Preschool is egg-cited There was a ruffle of feathers, muffled peeps and then squeals of joy from Olinda Preschool students as several chickens were placed into the school's new chicken coop in late October.After six years of planning and fundraising, a new chicken coop was built in September with several chickens moving in to become part of the school environment and curriculum.

The project has been important for the children's learning and development and has provided students with a hands-on learning experience.

Cuckoo for sale

By Derek Schlennstedt The internationally renowned Cuckoo Restaurant is up for sale.

For over 60 years, the iconic Dandenong Ranges eatery has been making thousands of locals and tourists smile with their delicious Bavarian fare, refreshing steins of German beer, and energetic live music and entertainment.

But after six decades of operation, The Cuckoo freehold and business is now on the market for sale.

The Cuckoo opened in 1958 in Olinda, and

was run by Willi and Karin Koeppen as one of Australia's first all-you-can-eat smorgasbord restaurants.

The restaurant has since remained in the family with owner Karin Koeppen still welcoming people when they enter.

Johnston King Real Estate agent Michael Hall said the restaurant drew thousands of international visitors every year and that everyone he'd spoken to had a story to tell of the Cuckoo.

"It's a fascinating piece of tourist history in Victoria."

"Last year they 80,000 visitors and about 25 per cent are overseas tourists...it's such a success story."

Mr Hall said he expected interest from Australian and International buyers alike, though he doubts that the buyer will change the successful business model.

"It virtually runs itself, and just has key personnel ... . Karin still sit there and chats to all her all mates. And life goes on."

Children are cooped up

By Romy Stephens Mount Dandenong Preschool has seen improvements to its outdoor space and curriculum with the recent addition of a chicken coop.

The project was finished in September after six years of planning and extensive fundraising.

A group of chickens were then introduced to the coop this month.

The preschool's Parent Advisory Group President, Hayley Lourey, said the project has been important for the children's learning and development.

"They've been writing their little stories about each of the chickens and doing their arts and crafts around the chickens," she said.

"They can actually visually see it and touch it.

"Children learn through visualisation, touch and feel and actually experiencing it.

"They also learn that there are different behaviours. Each chicken has its own little personality and you don't get that from just pictures and books."

The main source of funds for the project was the preschool's Chestnut Festival, a parent-organised event which attracts thousands of visitors to Kalorama Reserve on the first Sunday of every May. The festival started about 30 years ago as just a few parents selling chestnuts and has now grown into a popular event for the community.

Ms Lourey said the natural-looking chicken coop adds to the aesthetic appeal of the entire preschool.

"We're pretty fortunate in what we offer because of the environment," she said.

"Not many kinder's you can go to and have such a massive play area outside and also inside.

"We can have 20 kids out there and it doesn't look like a traditional kinder, it still looks like a nice welcoming environment."

Mount Dandenong Preschool is situated in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounded by cool temperate rainforest.

It has been in operation since 1964.

By Derek Schlennstedt The Cockatoo Little Athletics club is hoping to gain more members now that construction has finished on their club.

Cockatoo Little Athletics president Russell Butler said the club needs support now more than ever.

He said the construction undertaken on the club has left them with fantastic facilities, but the club lost more than half of its members while they were closed.

"We went from around 130 to 46," he said "We were supposed to lose the track for one season, but only got it handed back on 9 December and so we only had one week on the track then we broke up for Christmas and came back for February, march.""It basically killed us."

The club has new facilities now and cater to

all running events, as well as shot put, javelin, discus, and triple jump and long jump events.

Mr Butler said the work needed to rectify poor drainage on the oval.

"The biggest problem we used to suffer was no drainage, and coming out of spring it'd be so wet we couldn't use the full 40m track until December."

"The track now is absolutely awesome. We got a big downpour on Saturday, but we were straight back on the track and able to use it."

He said the little athletics club worked hard to create a family-like environment."We might not have the most expensive track in Victoria, but we have the most beautiful surroundings," he said.

"We're a very relaxed family club and we like to have parents in the infield supporting their children and involve everyone."

By Derek Schlennstedt The competition was too close to call at this year's Emerald Village Association (EVA) Citizen of the Year awards, with judges awarding the title to two very worthy winners.

Both Ray Spencer and Wayne Collins were recipients of this year's Emerald Citizen of the Year award, with Avonsleigh local, Emma Jackel awarded with the Youth Citizen of the Year award.

Judges stated that all awardees have served Emerald for many years in an unassuming, humble manner and have never sought personal recognition.

As the Emerald Lions Club President, Ray Spencer has been at the forefront of change within the Emerald region and has been a passionate supporter of the Lions Rural Aid and Disaster Relief, helping farmers with stock feed.

Mr Spencer is also the chairman of the Emerald Co-op and has been an enduring member of the Emerald Mechanics institute.

Sharing the Emerald Citizen award with Mr Spencer was Emerald resident Wayne Collins, who founded the Emerald Centre for Youth and Outreach (ECHO).

For over 30 years, Mr Collins has dedicated himself to improving the lives of others through developing youth programs, and effective disaster relief support services.

Speaking to the Mail, Mr Collins said ECHO youth services and the Ready2Go programs were designed to strengthen family life and provide support during a natural disaster.

Often, a powerful idea comes from lived experience.

That's the case for 23-year-old Emma Jackel who received this year's Emerald Young Citizen of the Year award on 22 October.

Emma is a fifth-generation farmer from Avonsleigh who's story has inspired the creation of a platform, called Ladies from the Land, that supports women from rural and regional Australia.

Emma and her family have faced adversity on numerous occasions.

The first period of hardship began two years ago when Emma's 18-year-old cousin who was also a close friend - passed away.

It seemed that just as the family would begin to recover from the tragic loss, another setback would hit.

About one year later, Emma's dad sustained an acquired brain injury after falling onto his excavator.

This saw him suffer six bleeds to his brain.

He was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital, in a coma for 10 days and couldn't come home for about three months.

At about 9:30AM on 23 January 2019, a woman parked her car in the Tecoma Primary School car park.

The woman returned to her vehicle at about 10:30AM to discover it had been stolen.

The vehicle was located at about 11:10AM at the Upwey Football Ground.

A male was observed walking away from the vehicle.

The same male was also observed riding a pushbike in the vicinity of the vehicle at Tecoma Primary School shortly before it was stolen.

Police are appealing for public assistance to identify the male.

"We were involved in our local church and we just started working with kids and the work just grew and grew and grew to the point where we just couldn't keep it going as volunteers," he said.

"I'd been a CFA member at Clematis and a big break came in 2009 in a rather horrible way."

"We got called to help after the Black Saturday fires. A big evacuation centre was set up in Whittlesea and we started working with kids and it was really after that, that we took what was a small group of volunteers locally and turned into the emergency support team."

Despite receiving a Queen's Award and a Cardinia Citizen of the Year award, Mr Collins said the community nominated Emerald Citizen of the Year award was bittersweet.

"I've received a Queen's award out of the Australian honours and I've received citizen of the year for Cardinia but this is the best. Being nominated by your peers, that is pretty cool."

"And to share it with someone like Ray Spencer is just awesome."

This year the Emerald Village Association also awarded a Youth Citizen of the Year award to Avonsleigh local Emma Jackel, which was the first Youth Citizen award in many years.

Lady from the land inspires the country

She had to learn how to drive the excavator, feed the cows and even had to make tough decisions such as sell stock.

"I had to run back and forth to the farm, the cows were calving at the time," she said.

"It was just being thrown into the deep end you don't know really what to do.

"I had friends and family give me guidance but dad's always been the one to tell me things about the farm.

"Through that time it was really hard not just on me but the whole family."

Deep down, Emma knew she wasn't alone when it came to battling tough times on a farm.

One night, on her way home from the daily trip into the Alfred Hospital with her mum, Emma mentioned the idea of creating a platform where women could support each other and share their stories.

After searching on Instagram for a potential group to join, she realised there was nothing of the sort.

That's when she decided to create Ladies from the Land, a group where she shares stories of females living in remote areas and farms across the country.

"I think it's important to be a positive light in other peoples lives," she said.

"Sometimes when I was in those situations I was like this is so hard, no one else is like this, why does it have to be us.

"When you actually think about it, there are a heap more people out there that are struggling as well."

With the support of some friends sharing the page on social media, its Instagram following started to grow rapidly.

Emma said that within the first couple of months, the page had about 4000 followers.

It is now just shy of 14,000 followers.

"I get heaps of messages saying we love reading about other people...Just seeing how hard girls work," Emma said.

"The biggest thing is girls are often, especially on farms and rural areas, sort of seen by other people as a stay at home mum.

"But there are a lot of things going on behind the scenes that are not recognised."

Through Ladies from the Land Emma also initiated a quilt drive earlier this year to help those impacted by the Bunyip State Park bushfire.

After doing a call out on Instagram, Emma received over 1500 quilt blocks which she sewed together with her mum.

Police are pleading for residents in the Dandenong Range to lock their cars.

Between 27 and November there was a spate of thefts from cars in Monbulk in and around Moxhams road and Davey Hill Road.

Police said that all the thefts were form cars, which were left unlocked.

"The moral of the story is if you don't want to be a victim and lose your belongs, lock it up and keep valuables out of sight," said police.

Operation Furlong At about 9:15PM, Highway Patrol members performing speed detection duties in the Croydon area as part of operation Maston identified a Ford utility travelling at 138 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Maroondah Hwy. The vehicle was observed failing to stop at a red traffic light at Maroondah Highway and Kent Avenue.

Shortly prior to being intercepted, the vehicle was again detected speeding at 105 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Kent Ave. The 20-year-old male probationary driver returned a positive Preliminary Breath Test and accompanied the members to a police station where he returned an Evidentiary Breath Test result of 0.115.

The man's licence was immediately suspended, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $825.

The man will face Court at a future date charged with speeding, drink-driving, speed dangerous, using defective motor vehicle and other traffic offences.

Maroondah Highway Patrol OIC Sergeant Aston said the incident was extremely concerning.

"It is extremely concerning that inexperienced drivers believe that they can behave in such a dangerous manner without any consideration for other road users or with the belief that they will escape detection by police."

Road closures With the weather warming up, the seasonal road closures period is now over and from now Forest and Wildlife Officers will be actively patrolling State Forest and Reserves within the Yarra District.

Officers will be chatting to visitors about responsible forest use, such as firewood collection, campfires, off-road vehicle use, trail bikes and litter.

Pelvic floor muscles are vital to maintain support and control of bladder and bowel and play a huge role in sexual function.

We know that prostatic enlargement can cause bladder dysfunctions such as frequency, urgency, slow or interrupted urine flow and even bladder obstruction.

To make things more devastating neural trauma after prostate surgery leads to Erectile Dysfunction (ED) with nerve regeneration painfully slow, if at all.

And ED is not just reserved for the postprostatectomy patient as up to 40 per cent of over 40-year-olds have some dysfunction which escalates to around 70 per cent of 70 year-olds.

We also know that Chronic Pelvic Pain syndrome, or Chronic Prostatitis, is the most common urological diagnosis in men under 40 years.

It may affect 2-14 per cent of the population and that tight or overactive pelvic floor muscles are often a contributor to symptoms.

There is strong evidence that specific pelvic floor muscle training with a physiotherapist before and after prostate surgery can significantly reduce the severity and duration of incontinence.

A study in the UK found that pelvic exercises helped 70 per cent of men with ED regain normal or significantly improved erectile function.

Local dancer stepping out

By Derek Schlennstedt Five years ago, Milla Sambell from Macclesfield watched on as her three-year-old son passed away.

The years that followed were filled with trauma, grief and a complete loss of understanding on how to continue living. But In 2018, Ms Sambell found comfort in dancing and that all changed.

Since then she has found a new love for the sport, and this December will compete in Australia’s premier competitive DanceSport event - the 2019 Australian DanceSport Championship.

“It is said that you can both lose yourself and find yourself in dancing. I have found truth in those words, especially during the past 15 months,” Ms Sambell told the Mail.

“I thought I would never feel alive; I lost all purpose, I lost myself and refused to believe that I could feel happy ever again.

“The thing is, I was born to dance. It has been my passion from the start, but life would dictate otherwise and I had to give up on dance at a very young age. I thought I had lost my chance forever.

“Except now, in my 30s I have discovered there is no such thing as being too old to pursue a dream.”

Following her son’s death, Ms Sambell rekindled her love for dance and joined a small ballroom studio in Belgrave South in July 2018.

Although she felt overwhelmed by being in a class with younger people, she persisted.

“I remember feeling overwhelmed, not being able to keep up with the kids on my first lesson, and so I began private lessons,” she told the Mail.

“I soon discovered that there was a whole world of ballroom and Latin dance, that, if I worked hard enough, I could be a part of.

“Three months later, I competed in my first

competition, placing first in Rumba and third in Waltz.”

For Ms Sambell dancing has provided a psychological relief from the death of her son and has given her a new lease on life.

Speaking to the Mail Ms Sambell said that through dance one could ‘lose track of the negativity in life, and find a better version of themselves’.

“Words can hardly express what dancing has given me. It has given me purpose, something positive to live for and to absorb myself in,” she said.

“When people are hurting, they need more than empathy; they need something to do.

And my suggestion is, just dance.”

Ms Sambell will be doing just that, when from 6-8 December she will compete against globally-recognised dancers at Margaret Court Arena as part of the 2019 Australian DanceSport Championship.

Designing a cleaner future in classroom

Five Emerald Secondary College students will be travelling to America next year, after winning the Future Problem Solving Australian National Championships for their reverse vending machine (RVM) design.

The students competed against 24 schools from all over Australia and Tasmania at Moreton Bay College in Brisbane on the weekend of 19 October.

The Emerald Secondary College team dubbed STOP (Stop Trashing Our Planet), were the 2019 National Community Problem Solving Champions, with judges commending their innovative reverse vending machine design.

“Your display was an excellent explanation of your project scope, what you have achieved and was visual stimulating,” stated the judges.

“Congratulations on achieving such a great result, including installing RVM and wider outreach.“ “You are to be commended on managing expansion of your project and the outcome you have achieved.”

That outcome includes a fully functional RVM machine at Emerald Secondary, and a second RVM machine in Emerald Main Street.

“We were up against nine teams and it was quite a nerve racking experience, but we managed to pull through and come first, which was really, really exciting,” Christian Stammer said.

The students’ reverse vending machine is an incentive-based idea, which provides candy or money when the user recycles.

“When they recycle their bottle or can, they can get a reward and the idea of it is to reward good behaviours like recycling plastic bottles.”

Once collected, the bottles are saved from landfill and recycled responsibly.

The students will now represent Australia next June at the World Championships and a GoFundMe will be set up to help them get there.

Until then, they plan to continue advocating for RVM recycling and will be pushing for the State Government to introduce RVM recycling in Victoria.

Over 2500 ghouls, goblins and colourful dayof-the-dead characters arrived at Ferny Creek Reserve on 26 October for a day of visual delights at this year's Halloween on the Green.

Undeterred by the weather forecast, The Philanthropic Collective once again created a spectacular charity event for all the entire community.

"We were firmly glued to the weather radar throughout the day, ready to enact our emergency plan," said event director Andrew FillipGautier, "But the weather didn't stop us and the sun made several appearances."

Children and families lined up to be part of the huge amount of free entertainment with Le Pine Funerals a stand out highlight, along with the New Orleans style Mayors Parade.

Andrew told the Mail the day was pure theatre designed to ignite the imagination.

"There would be few events that a family of five could attend for under $50.00 and have access to free carnival rides, endless entertainment and food" said Andrew.

"The historic log cabin at the reserve was reimagined as a haunted house and a right of passage for the children of the Hills" Andrew and his team promised there would be even more surprises for 2020 with Halloween falling on Saturday 31 October.

Students cook up a storm at college

By Jessica Anstice They may not be "masterchefs" but local primary school students sure knew how to cook up a storm at Emerald Secondary College on Wednesday 23 October.

Students from Harkaway, Emerald, Carrington, and Boronia West primary schools went head on in a cook off to see which students could create the most delicious meal.

Emerald Primary School Students took out best entree in the competition, while Harkaway Primary School whipped up the number one main and Carrington Primary School the best dessert.

Food judges Gembrook MP Brad Battin, and chefs from Incy Wincy and The General in Emerald selected Harkaway and Carrington primary schools as equal first overall.

"The kids loved it. I've already had emails from teachers having kids requesting another cook off this year," Emerald Primary School kitchen garden program coordinator Jess Tannock said.

"All staff involved yesterday would love to see more of these types of events happen more often and the kids all agree.

"Hopefully we can get more schools involved in this to encourage healthy eating, knowledge around food preparation and sharing food with people from all communities."

Tavisbrook and The Nook

She said the garden features a huge array of floral favourites and in spring roses, lavender, camellias and azaleas are the highlight.

"It's very much a romantic English cottage style garden," Val said.

"Full of perennials and roses - they're my great passion."

"It's an interesting garden and has brick paths and different levels but not too steep and also has steps and a ramp, so if people come with a pram or wheelchair, they can use the ramp."

Val and her neighbour Doug Brook who owns Tavisbrook garden just next door are featuring their gardens together with both gardens complimenting one another.

Ms Jackson said her garden helps to keep alive the memory of her loving husband, Don,

She said the many frameworks and arches within the garden complement the 'secret garden' feel and attributes much of the design to her husband's vision.

"Don was a horticulturist and he had a vast knowledge," she said.

"He taught me all I know and I open this in his memory."

Falls for the public

By Derek Schlennstedt Open Gardens Victoria will open the naturalistic Dandenong Ranges garden created by renowned landscape designer Phillip Johnson.

Stepping into Phillip Johnson's 2.8-hectare property at Olinda, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) and with filtered views out to the Yarra Valley, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd stumbled upon a natural waterhole in a native forest that has been there forever.

Such is the clever design behind the garden at Billabong Falls, which was the inspiration for the 'Trailfinders Australian Garden' that won 'Best in Show' at Chelsea Flower Show 2013.

Phillip specialises in the establishment of environmentally sustainable billabongs, natural (chemical free) swimming pools and water features that are replenished by stormwater, set within naturalistic landscapes where rock is used to spectacular effect.

The land at Billabong Falls has a 22-metre level change from the top of Phillip's studio to the base of the landscape, which has allowed runoff water from the driveway and roof to be channelled beautifully throughout the landscape into two billabongs. One billabong has now become a natural-filtration swimming pool with a serpentine timber walkway and small pebble path that creates a reflexology experience in bare feet.

Other garden features also include dry riverbeds, an outdoor shower, and a beautiful private sitting area complete with firepit.

The rocks used have all been sourced less than 20 kilometres from the property and consist of angular hornfels rock and bronze granite. All painstakingly craned into place.

The soil is a fertile red volcanic or mountain

This is the garden that inspired Phil's ''Best in Show'' garden at Chelsea Flower Show in 2013 and is a masterful demonstration of how to sympathetically replicate nature and be sustainable with water in a garden. soil - set within the Dandenongs' wet-sclerophyll rainforest of eucalypts with an understorey of ancient soft and rough tree ferns.

Planting has followed a sympathetic theme of native plants that can cope with the shady conditions, while rock steps are softened by

gently creeping Kidney Weed and Native Violet.

Phillip's Design Studio will also be open to the public along with the garden on 23 and 24 November. Entry is $10, though under 18's are free.

Killer thriller Terminator: Dark Fate Starring Natalia Reyes, Mackenzie Davis and Linda Hamilton Rated MA15+ Terminator: Dark Fate is a compelling, visceral thriller marred by severe unoriginality.

The plot has solid character development and balances internal and external conflict well: as Dani (Natalia Reyes) and her allies struggle against the deadly robot assassin hunting them, Dani grows more confident and accepts her destiny as resistance leader in the dire future ahead of them.

Mackenzie Davis is extremely versatile as Grace, Dani's cybernetically-augmented protector, conveying bravado, vulnerability and incredible prowess in the action sequences, and has fun adversarial chemistry with Linda Hamilton as veteran Terminator hunter Sarah Connor. Arnold Schwarzenegger provides deadpan levity and some touching moments as a Terminator who grew a sense of compassion.

After several tame sequels, Dark Fate reinstates the bleak atmosphere and brutal intensity of the first two Terminator films, but retreads them extremely closely, down to individual plot beats and set-pieces.

Dark Fate attempts an intriguing metatextual layer, with Sarah and the Arnie Terminator coming to terms with the dark future they know while helping Dani and Grace prepare for a new apocalypse. However, little has changed in any practical sense, as a homicidal AI (Legion, instead of Skynet) is still sending robot assassins back in time; as such, the film's emphasis on passing on the torch for a changed future feels flimsy.

Terminator: Dark Fate has engaging performances and brutal thrills, but a very derivative plot structure and a hollow attempt to rework the Terminator mythos.

The dawning of a new era

By Russell Bennett The planets are finally aligning for Gembrook Cockatoo's netballers.

Their Orchard Road home courts were decommissioned two years ago, but the sad reality is they were unfit for play long before that.

The rich, red soil that Gembrook is so well known for would form a kind of mudslide on wet days, pouring on to the courts, while weeds would regularly pop up through the cracks in the playing surface.

And then there's the 'netball clubrooms' at the ground - currently nothing more than a storage shed on the side of the courts.

The past few years haven't exactly been easy on the Brookers, but now there's a bright, shining light for the club.

Not only are both the football and netball arms about to embark on exciting new facility upgrades, the netballers have a new coach who can't wait to lead them through their exciting new chapter.

If all goes to plan, the Brookers will have new facilities ready for the start of the 2021 AFL Outer East season - and for the netballers that includes a new netball pavilion and court upgrades.

And together with newly-appointed senior coach Shanae Ingram, they can't wait.

"With the upgrades - I guess the complete redoing - of the courts, and the addition of a pavilion, I think we're finally going to be able to showcase what we can do, and how we want things to be moving forward at Gembrook," outgoing coach Mickey U'ren told the Mail at a windswept Brookers HQ recently.

And that's another part of this plan that's all fitting into place - playing against clubs much closer to home, and therefore standing a much better chance of attracting quality playing talent from the nearby growth corridor.

"It's just so exciting at the moment because

we are going into a division that's more central to us, we're getting our brand new courts, starting on our pavilion, and we're bringing in a new head coach," U'ren explained.

"I can't wait until the building is up and the courts are done.

"I want to sit in the middle of the new courts and have a picnic when they're all done - to pop a bottle of champagne celebrate the work we've done."

After navigating the arduous political minefield that is trying to secure approval and funding for facility upgrades, the Brookers are now looking forward to one hell of an exciting future.

The football club has signed a number of new players, while Ingram has moved from her home club Kooweerup in West Gippsland up to Gembrook to take the Brookers' netballers forward.

U'ren said Ingram's appointment was an easy one, for a couple of key reasons.

"It wasn't just because I know her so well as a person, it was because I know she and her family would fit into our football netball club seamlessly," she said.

"I really believe she'll get the most out of herself, and the most out of us here.

"I know how passionate she is about her netball. I've been fortunate enough to be mentored by Shanae for my whole coaching career so far. She's always the first person I turn to.

"The girls need that fresh voice, and someone who's really passionate to do the role as well. Someone like Shanae could really light a fire under us again and push us to the next level."

The Brookers will hold netball tryouts on November 21, 23, and 28 from 6pm, 11am, and 6pm respectively at their temporary netballing home at Mountain Road in Cockatoo.

Mount Evelyn females strive for football success

By Romy Stephens Two former Mount Evelyn Football Netball Club members have been selected in this year's AFLW draft.

Former Mount Evelyn netballer Serena Gibbs was selected by Carlton at pick 44 while Lauren Tesoriero was selected by Richmond at pick 96.

Lauren played junior football with Mount Evelyn and was also the senior men's assistant forwards coach this year.

She previously played AFLW for Collingwood and interestingly, is Richmond's recruiter meaning she was involved in drafting herself to the club.

Serena formerly played netball with Warburton and Mount Evelyn before making the switch to football this year by joining the Eastern Ranges.

She also featured in several VFLW matches for Hawthorn where she continued to impress.

The 19-year-old said she never anticipated being drafted after just one season under her belt.

"It was surreal. I never thought I'd have my name called out ... I was in absolute utter shock," she said.

"I'm looking forward to developing my skills as a footballer and to see where I can go in my football journey as I'm quite new at the game.

The drafting of two former members is a big boost for Mount Evelyn as the club looks to continue providing to the talent pool of VFLW and AFLW in years to come.

Since starting its first senior women's team in 2017, the club has made two preliminary finals and one grand final.

Club secretary, Lauren Zelunka said Mount Evelyn has been very encouraging of women's football.

"We have been one of the leaders in the area in relation to female participation, having had strong netball teams, as well as often leading the way in relation to junior girls and senior women's football teams," she said.

"We've got a number of talented girls and women who have come through the club, playing in Eastern Ranges TAC games, to playing VFLW and of course being drafted to AFLW. "Once we have our new clubrooms, hopefully in the next year or two, with dedicated male and female change rooms, that can hopefully help us attract females across all ages."

Monbulk bowlers take it

By Eric Markham Monbulk Bowls Club's Division 1 team welcomed Albert Park for the first time in its history over the weekend.

To top off the historical event, Monbulk came away with a resounding 71 to 35 win.

Andrew Bell's rink led by just one shot after 11 ends, but they then won the next five ends by 18 shots to put the game beyond doubt.

They eventually won 30 to 14.

Richard Cookson's rink trailed by three shots after seven ends.

They then won the next six ends to open up a five shot lead and were able to maintain this lead winning by six shots, 21 to 15.

Eric Markham's rink grabbed the lead early

and only conceded six ends for the game to win 20 to 6.

Monbulk 2 suffered a loss against topplaced Mooroolbark at home.

Di Bigelow's rink led by seven shots after 17 ends.

However, the Mooroolbark rink found some form to come within one shot with two ends to play.

The Monbulk rink steadied and won the last two ends to take the game 16 to 13.

Graeme Goller's rink had a close tussle throughout the day with the lead changing regularly in the back end of the game.

The Monbulk rink had a one shot advantage going into the last end, but dropped a five

to lose by four shots, 15 to 19.

Eric Furby's rink found it difficult to put consecutive winning ends together and hence fell behind their opponents, eventually losing 25 to 12.

This meant a loss for the Monbulk team by 14 shots, 57 to 43.

Monbulk 3 hit the road to take on Mooroolbark.

Peter Francis' rink had a close contest up to the 12th end when they trailed by just one shot, but in the end, Mooroolbark proved too strong winning 16 to 13.

Ray Pike's rink started well and led by five shots after four ends.

They then lost the next three ends including

a horror six to trail by four shots.

They fought the game out and actually led by two shots with four ends to play, however, they couldn't hold on to go down 22 to 20.

Mike Harris' rink started slowly after dropping a five on the first end and by the fifth end trailed by nine shots.

Monbulk then lifted its level and made a game of it eventually going down by nine shots, 22 to 13.

Mooroolbark claimed victory 60 to 46.

The club's Night Owl Bowls will start on 7 November at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.

It is a great opportunity for new bowlers as well as those who have played before.
