Millions for play By Jessica Anstice A giant dragon’s head, climbable body and dragon’s eggs will form the centrepiece of an all-abilities playground to be built in Officer. Covering almost a hectare of Arcadia Estate, the $2.3 million park expected to be complete by the start of 2021, will take children’s “imaginative adventures to a whole new level”. Satterley Victoria general manager Jack Hoffmann said the project is exciting for local
residents because it’s so distinctive. “The dragon’s head will face Flanagan Avenue to ensure it is highly visible from the surrounding streetscapes,” he said. “This will be a very unique play space something that hasn’t been done before.” Designed by Agency of Sculpture the dragon’s head will be a major feature, towering above the playground and the park delivered by Outlines Landscape Architecture.
Each element will be built to provide challenges for children of different ages and abilities with accessibility and inclusion in mind. A spokesperson from Outlines said this will be a vital part of the design. “Many families have children of various ages. It is important that there is something to occupy all kids. As the children grow up they can explore different parts of the playground that may have seemed scary or hard when they

Handy help for early years By Mitchell Clarke Goodstart Early Learning in Pakenham will receive $43,381 as part of a State Government $160 million initiative. Bass MP Jordan Crugnale visited the centre on Friday 25 October to announce the funding which is part of the School Readiness Funding which will provide more than $700,000 to kindergartens within the electorate. The funding can be used on programs that will improve children's language development, social and emotional resilience and support access and inclusion in kindergarten. Kindergarten services will be able to tap into the expertise of speech and occupational therapists, language and literacy professionals and child psychologists. "We know the impact that a quality early learning program can have on a child's future, which is why we're giving more kindergarten services extra funding to support Pakenham

Kinder turns pink for cause By Mitchell Clarke Staff at O'Shannessy early learning centre came to work dressed in their pink pyjamas on Thursday 24 October in a bid to bring awareness to breast cancer. Throughout October, Pink Ribbon aims to celebrate breast cancer awareness month, with the annual campaign serving as an opportunity to focus on the disease and its impact on those affected. The colour pink in general has long identified the breast cancer brand, expressing moral support for women who are suffering and have suffered the disease. Centre manager Shelley Campbell said the centre will also host a fun run in November,
with all families in the community urged to get involved by dressing in pink and donating to the cause. "Here at O'Shannessy we have a great community of families that are always willing to be involved and donate to a special cause," she said. "Sadly, we all know someone that has been affected by breast cancer." The centre will also host a fun run on Sunday 24 November from 10am-12pm at 10 O'Shannessy Street, Pakenham. After the fun run is complete, there will be a sausage sizzle and cold refreshments offered to all participants. Everyone in the community is welcome.

It’s a clean sweep By Mitchell Clarke Residents of Fallingwater Estate have come together to create a ‘Friends of Kennedy Creek’ group and are in the process of forming an official residents group in a bid to maintain the area and bring the community together. A number of residents met with Gembrook MP Brad Battin on Sunday 20 October for a barbecue to discuss the future of the creek, which has been plagued by increasing amounts of rubbish. Heavily overgrown shrubs and large broken branches are a common site in the area with some residents reporting seeing alcohol bottles, mattresses and even electronic goods being dumped at the site. Mr Battin’s barbecue follows a meeting in August where he called on Cardinia Shire Council and Melbourne Water to maintain the area. “It was great to host the barbecue on Sunday with residents to assist in the formation of the Fallingwater Residents Group,” Mr Battin said. “I look forward to seeing the group grow over the next few months, working together to make their local community a better place.” Fallingwater Estate resident Brijal Parikh said Mr Battin has been instrumental in getting action on the site. “If Brad hadn’t intervened, I don’t think we’d be where we are today,” he said. were responsible for maintaining the Kennedy Creek waterway while regular rubbish removal and weed control works were shared between them and council. “As residents, we’re happy to share the clean up because we believe it’s not only the responsibility of Melbourne Water and council, but we would like a little bit of help,” Mr Parikh said. One resident, Claire Sunderland has been dedicating her time to picking up rubbish around the creek every morning and said each day she manages to fill one bag.
“If everyone had one small bag with them while they are out walking and filled it, this problem would soon be under control,” she said. “I understand that you can never stop people from littering or the wind blowing rubbish into and around the creek, but you can always pick it up.” In the meantime, Brijal has said he will meet with a council representative to discuss receiving a grant to assist in forming an official resident group.

Cardinia Shire Council is the first council in the state to appoint Children's Ambassadors. Almost 30 percent of the shire's population is under 17-years-old and council's Children's Ambassador Program is one of the ways to ensure the younger voices are being heard. Mayor Graeme Moore said that children have a right to be heard and it was important to council that they have their concerns and ideas taken seriously. "At Cardinia Shire Council we recognise the importance of listening to the voices of children in our community and that we must utilise them meaningfully in our planning, design and delivery of services," Cr Moore said. "Children are experts in their own lives and experiences and they have a right to be included in decision making processes that relate to their lives, as important citizens in our community." Local primary students recently presented a number of staff with badges to formally declare them as Children's Ambassadors for council. The ambassadors will be the voice of children in the community and provide leadership by influencing the outcomes for children. "The program highlights the importance council places on listening to children and will help encourage the inclusion of children in everyday decisions at council," Cr Moore said. "The ambassadors will be advocates for listening to, involving, and safeguarding the rights of children in the work carried out by each department across council." Earlier this year, council's within the Child Friendly Cities initiative surveyed children across the state to ask why adults should be listening to children. The survey's top five reasons were: 1. Listening to children teaches children how to listen. 2. Children's opinions matter because they are the ones who will live with the outcomes of decisions made now. 3. Listening to children is a good way to understand and empathise with them; they are growing up in a different world and they want to talk about and express how they feel. 4. Adults can learn from children's ideas (which could possibly change the world!) as they offer a different perspective, are thoughtful and creative. 5. Children need adults to listen to them so they can feel safe to speak up if they find themselves in a vulnerable situation. "All staff and councillors have the responsibility to consider our community in every decision we make," Cr Moore said. "As a council that is focused on inclusiveness and fostering a sense of belonging for everyone in our community, our Children's Ambassadors take that responsibility a step further to ensure our youngest citizens are also always considered."

Seniors love all that jazz By Jessica Anstice Pakenham's Outlook Community Centre celebrated the Victorian Seniors Festival with its annual Jazz Morning Tea on Tuesday 22 October. Back by popular demand, jazz band Blue Reflections entertained over one hundred seniors with many of the popular songs from the 1940s. "The Victorian Seniors Festival is in its 37th year, and celebrates the valuable contribution that many Victorians over 60 make to our communities," community centre manager Alison Ryan said. "The hall was alive with sing-alongs, a buffet morning tea, and even some dancing. "These events are so much fun, there is great energy and connection. We love hosting these events. If you missed it this time, be sure to look out for it again next year." Outlook Community Centre offers many programmes and activities for seniors including line dancing, tango and ukulele. The centre is also a hub for the My Aged Navigator Trial, providing information to enable people to stay in their homes as they age.

Hotspot for rebates By Mitchell Clarke Melbourne's booming outer suburbs such as Pakenham, Berwick and Clyde North are proving to be some of the most popular suburbs for solar installations. New data from the State Government has revealed 46,000 solar installations have been completed since the Solar Homes program launch. The program reduces energy bills for families most in need of relief, with 69 percent of solar rebates going to households with an income of less than $105,000 and at least 10 percent going to those earning less than $16,000 annually.
But the statistics have shown outer suburbs are embracing the transition to renewable energy with over 40 percent of rebate applications secured by households outside of Melbourne. Clyde North recorded 1284 complete solar installations from the program while Pakenham and Berwick have 614 and 625 respectively. With more than 60,000 rebates for solar panels, solar hot water and batteries secured, Minister for Solar Homes Lily D'Ambrosio said the program has been "speedily" converting applications into installations within the month they're allocated to customers.
After months on end of petitioning by residents, a pedestrian crossing has been installed on the busy thoroughfare that is Windermere Boulevard. The public now has safe access from the residential side of the road, which also include a few shops and Pakenham Primary School, to Cardinia Lakes Shopping Centre. Last year, Pakenham resident David Roberts re-ignited the push for the crossing by accruing over 600 signatures to council and over 80 council submissions for the crossing to be included in the 2018-'19 budget. "It was actually a part of the plan for the estate but it was just sort of forgotten about," Mr Roberts said. "All they have to do now is hook the power on and it's all up and running which is really exciting. "So many people try to cross there and it was very dangerous. It's a busy area - especially with the takeaway food places there."
"Solar Homes is putting power back in the hands of Victorians, helping to drive down household energy bills, reduce emissions and respond to climate change," Ms D'Ambrosio said. "The latest figures show that Solar Homes has been overwhelmingly popular and Victorians in every part of the state are rushing to be part of the switch to cleaner, cheaper energy." This year, the program has seen a 46 percent increase state-wide, with 60,000 households set to receive the panels, an increase of almost 20,000 installations compared to 2018. The next release of solar panel rebates is on Friday 1 November.

Reading the news 24-10-19 the report by Mr David Atkins about heavy traffic on High Street, Cranbourne, I have lived in Hampton Park longer than Mr Atkins in Cranbourne. The Cranbourne bypass was on the planning table back in the late 1980s and early 1990s but it never got don. Houses were more important. The council get rates but they can't get rates from a bypass. The height of invention By Mitchell Clarke A worksite near miss where a scissor lift almost crushed a worker was the inspiration behind the Hazard Watch system being invented. The patented system was invented by brothers Matt and Rick O'Connor from Pakenham business Swift Equipment, after the close call when the operator couldn't see a person in the path of the machine. In a bid to avoid any other potential tragedies, the boys got to work and designed Hazard Watch, a wrist mounted wireless device which can be worn by anyone working around scissor lists or similar pieces of equipment. The watch allows the user to bring it to an immediate stop by a pushing a button on the
wrist band if they see someone in danger. Hazard Watch is currently in in-field trials and will soon be available on all scissor lifts and access equipment hired or purchased from Swift Equipment, an access equipment hire company. In the meantime, the product was so well received it was nominated for the Worksafe Invention of the Year Award and will face Butler Freight Services and Sigmatec Pty Ltd to take out the state wide award. "We're pleased to be nominated and hope Hazard Watch can help make Australian workplaces safer," Rick said. The winner will be announced on Thursday 30 October at Melbourne Town Hall.

Centrelink psychologist preyed on vulnerable teen By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former psychologist at Centrelink in Pakenham has been convicted for a third sexual assault on a teenager applying for a disability support pension. Hong Lay, 41, of Mulgrave, was given an additional jail term after pleading guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 29 October. Lay had preyed upon the 18-year-old woman with Asperger's Syndrome and acute social phobia and anxiety during an assessment of her suitability-to-work at the Centrelink office in December 2016. Lay insisted that the woman's accompany-
ing father wait in the waiting room while he led the victim into a secluded room for a purported 'heart test'. Alone with her, he touched the woman in lewd ways. She reported the matter to police in April 2019. Defence barrister Philip Dunn argued against cumulative jail time, citing the age of the 2016 offence, as well as the lack of prior convictions and subsequent charges. "He touched her over her clothing," Mr Dunn told the court. "She didn't complain, and didn't complain for some years later."
On 7 October, Lay was jailed for six months followed by a two-year community corrections order by the County Court of Victoria for two sexual assaults in the same office in April 2017. The two complainants were girls, aged 16 and 17, also afflicted with mental health conditions and assaulted in similiar ways. Lay had surrendered his registration as a psychologist, voluntarily attended sexual-offender counselling, was engaged for marriage and now worked as a photographer at weddings and birthdays, the court heard. He will report under the state's sexual offenders register for 15 years.
Lay had been under work and relationship pressures at the time, Mr Dunn said. Police argued for a further jail term to reflect community expectations. Magistrate Tara Hartnett said the offending was a "significant breach of trust given his role as a psychologist". "This is a plainly vulnerable complainant." Ms Hartnett said the sentence - complicated by the County Court ruling this month - needed to send a message to the community and to Lay himself. Lay was jailed for three months, with one month cumulative on the County Court sentence.

How long have you been a part of the Berwick RSL Sub-branch? I joined the sub branch in 2012. I was elected to the committee in 2016 and elected as vicepresident in 2019. What is the sub-branch's primary aim? Primary aim is to provide welfare assistance to veterans and their families and sub branch members. What are some of the important services the sub-branch provides to the community every year? The two main community services provided during the year are Anzac Day and Remembrance Day Services. In addition we as required, do visits to school, aged care and nursing homes. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? Tasmania.

All aboard their own tram By Mitchell Clarke Year 3 students from Beaconhills College were thrilled to head into the city and see their artwork on the side of a Melbourne tram. The students were “over the moon” when their art teacher Kyla Whitfield announced their collective design was chosen for an art project as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival. The Melbourne Art Trams are a popular annual transformation project where trams are turned into moving canvases wearing artworks created entirely by the public. “I’ve been aware of the Art Trams for a few years now, and I thought why not have a crack at doing it with the students,” Ms Whitfield. With about 78 students getting involved, the theme of the artwork was about Melbourne being a welcoming place. “The students were given the task of working in small groups and watching each other make welcoming gestures and then sketching those gestures,” she explained. “To see that their work is valued enough that it’s now on a tram, it’s just a great reward I think. “It will bring them great joy, which is really special.” The students joined Ms Whitfield and Berwick head of junior school Matt Newman in posing for happy snaps in front of the colourful carriage. The unique design is currently weaving its way around the city until August 2020.

Pakenham Consolidated School students raised $1225 for CanTeen as part of National Bandanna Day. Completely organised by the students, a special fundraiser day was held on Friday for the charity, which support young people who have cancer by providing peer support and counselling. Grade 6 students Zoran Hibbert and Huia Taito have spent every morning over the past fortnight, selling colourful bandannas to their peers. “Cancer can cause problems for young people like depression and anxiety as well as financial problems so it’s important that we do all we can to help out,” Zoran said. “Being a leader and organising this has been good because the younger students have been looking up to us.” Pakenham Consolidated School teacher Sally Dawson commended Zoran and Huia for their efforts, saying they’ve done a “fantastic job”. “CanTeen supports young people with cancer so basically money that’s raised goes towards booking flights for people to get treatment, getting resources or craft and journals for young people to occupy their time,” Ms Dawson said. “The students also love it - the bandannas sell like hotcakes. The cool patterns and colours really entice the students to keep buying more and more. “We actually sold out this year so next year we’re going to have to buy more boxes so that we can keep up.”

Relief for the relievers By Danielle Kutchel The Casey Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) branch is many things to many people. But most of all it is relief: from poverty, fear and hunger. From humble beginnings at Queen Victoria Market five and a half years ago, the Casey ADRA branch has grown to three locations, staffed by around 60 regular volunteers. Encompassing the Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong local government areas, ADRA provides healthy food and meals to hundreds of residents, a community leaders outreach at Fountain Gate and counselling and support groups for women, men and youth. Victoria and Tasmania director of ADRA, Rebecca Auriant, says demand has increased statewide with around one in five people experiencing food insecurity. Casey ADRA Cafe Team Leader Beata Stednik runs a food pantry from her home in Narre Warren North. From there items are distributed to people experiencing food insecurity as well as other relief agencies. Ms Stednik and her team work closely with other local organisations like Transit and Casey North Community Information and Support Services, who help to identify the neediest residents. They receive food donations from organisations like Secondbite as well as companies including Simplot, Nandos, Lite n Easy and local bakeries, which provide excess produce to be distributed to those who need it. Ms Stednik says it's important to realise that their support is not just for homeless people, but rather anyone who needs help. "It's focusing on people who are in hiding, struggling with food shortages but they won't come and tell you because they're shy," she says. "We've got a family that was existing on bread and butter, but they came to collect meals to take to Queen Victoria Market for the homeless in the street even though they were

"We look at people and say they've got a car, they've got a nice house, but you'd never know that day to day, they struggle to feed their families, so it's important for us to find those families to help them out so they won't end up homeless." Volunteers also cook meals to be packed and given out at their regular spot at Queen Victoria Market each week, and provide cooking classes to teach people how to cook their own healthy meals on a budget. ADRA is one of several organisations in and around Berwick to receive substantial support from Coles. The supermarket giant recently announced that residents in Berwick experiencing disadvantage and homelessness received nearly 145,000 meals over the past 12 months thanks to a surge in Coles' food donations from local stores. The equivalent of nearly five million meals in food donations were donated by 2015 Coles supermarkets to 159 charities across Victoria, including ADRA and Bk 2 Basics. But with demand always growing, Ms Stednik says ADRA is always looking for more support to enable them to continue their holistic activities. Volunteers can put their hand up to run a cooking class, cook meals for distribution, lend an ear for socialising at the ADRA cafe, help with fundraisers or get in touch with other charities that might be able to team up with ADRA. "Together, we can do so much more," Ms Stednik says.

Maths a hit, thanks Jess By Danielle Kutchel Teaching excellence is all in a day's work for Hillsmeade Primary School teacher Jess Szalek. Now in her fifth year of teaching, Ms Szalek focuses on making learning authentic and likeable for her students. In her maths classes for example, she keeps students engaged through song, creating catchy ditties to capture those often-tricky numeracy concepts. Kids are often involved in writing and producing the songs too, which are then recorded and put on the school's intranet to be broadcast across the school. The songs are often parodies of popular tunes, and Ms Szalek says her students are now associating their favourite radio hits with maths. "I still remember my times tables from school and I remember learning them through songs in class," she says. "That worked for me as a learner, so I try to bring it into the classroom. It doesn't work for everyone, but we want to cater for every students and music is another way we can cater to certain styles of learning." Acknowledging that some students learn through bookwork, some through tunes and some through hands-on physical learning, another of Ms Szalek's ideas is to take her students outside to study angles by applying the lessons to goal kicking in a game of AFL - keeping it authentic to what her students like. Now, her efforts to make learning accessible to every student have earned her a national teaching award. Ms Szalek was honoured with the $2000 Excellence Award at the recent Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute Choose Maths Awards.
Jess Szalek has made an impact on maths learning at Hillsmeade Primary School. "It's pretty surreal, it speaks volumes about our school and the way we go about things," she says of the award. "It's very prestigious and humbling, but I'm just trying to do what every teacher does." She says the award has reaffirmed the direction her teaching is going in. "I would love to use it to reach other staff and other networks and use it as a stepping stone to develop more consistency across our network and area and even Victoria. "I would like to make sure we can build collective efficacy in numeracy improvement in all students - the more improvement in student outcomes, the better. The students are the main reason why we all do this and if I've got something that works well, I want to share with other teachers and maybe reach a few extra learners," the award winner says.

She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Stars from the east shine By Romy Stephens A collection of footballers from the eastern suburbs have been picked up in this year's AFLW draft. Laura McClelland (pick 25) and Emma Horne (pick 73) from Monbulk Football Netball Club in AFL Outer East were both drafted by Richmond. Meanwhile, the Casey Demons' Nicole Garner (pick 50) and Kaila Bentvelzen (pick 67) were picked up by Geelong and Collingwood respectively. Not only is Monbulk both McClelland's and Horne's local club, but the pair have played at Eastern Ranges for the past three years and grew up together. "It's pretty insane, I don't think we've quite realised how cool it's going to be, especially until we actually get down there and start training," Horne said. "Considering we were really close friends in primary school and we used to play footy on the oval at lunchtimes. "To end up here, it's never something I thought would happen but I'm so glad it has." McClelland, a left-footer, is known for her aerial work and is the Eastern Ranges captain. She started playing in the boys' team at Monbulk when she was nine-years-old and stayed until she was 14. At the time, the club didn't have a women's side so she relocated to Ferntree Gully before being picked up by the Eastern Ranges. She also played for Vic Metro this year and earned All-Australian honours. McClelland said being selected by the team she supports still hasn't sunk in. "It's still pretty surreal for me but it's getting there, I'm starting to take it all in," she said. "It means the world, you're living your dream. You get to do something you love and for a club I've loved since I was little." Horne, on the other hand, didn't start playing football until she was 15-years-old. As someone who always kicked the football around when she was young, she finally joined a team when Eastern Ranges started its women's program in 2015. She said it means a lot to finally reach the ultimate pinnacle of women's football. "It's really fulfilling, especially because the women's competition wasn't even a thing when I was a kid," Horne said. "When I started being interested in footy it was all about the boys. "It's such a privilege to be playing for the Tigers next year and I'm so excited to get started

Nicole Garner had a standout season and co-captained the Demons in this year's VFLW campaign. Before her time at Casey, Garner won a premiership and best and fairest with the Gippsland Galaxy and has competed in basketball at an elite level. She will now head to Geelong to continue her football career. Casey Demons VFLW list and recruiting manager Todd Patterson said Garner came into the club with impressive core skills. "We always thought she was going to be one of our best chances to get drafted," he said. Bentvelzen also comes from a basketball
background and played as a key defender for Casey this year. Patterson said her "natural athleticism" was likely a key reason she was picked up by Collingwood. The selection of two players for AFLW is set to bolster the club's women's program, which Patterson said is designed to feed players right into the AFLW. "The purpose of the Casey VFLW program is to get players drafted into the AFLW," he said. "The talent pool, because of the rapid growth of AFLW, has been spread quite thin but we're really confident that there are local girls around that haven't been aware of how to get involved." The AFLW 2020 season fixture is expected to be released in the coming days and pre-season is due to start next month.

Homegrown Headhunter now a world champion By Danielle Kutchel Pakenham Muay Thai fighter Ramesh Habib is living the dream after bringing home the Lion Fight World Super Lightweight Title last month. Habib came up against Irishman Sean Clancy for the fight in Las Vegas on Saturday 21 September. The Pakenham powerhouse was able to beat Clancy in a unanimous decision. Despite dropping Clancy for an eight count in the first round, the fight went the full distance with the final scores at 50-44/50-44/5043. Habib and trainer Jesse Robbins were both confident going into the ring despite the fight being on unknown turf. “I felt awesome, I had the best preparation for this fight, had an awesome diet and a nice easy weight cut,” Habib said. “I went in there super confident. I knew I had the better skills as a fighter and knew I was on a different level to him. I said I was going to show that and I did.” Habib, who trains and teaches at Fighting Fit Pakenham, has dreamed of becoming a world champion since he first started competing 11 years ago. Tennis club’s call to arms By Sports Editor Russell Bennett Members of the Pakenham Tennis Club are desperate for the local community’s help to join the dots of the club’s storied history. Walking up the stairs at the Anderson Street clubrooms, what becomes immediately obvious is the proud winning tradition at the club. They’ve got in excess of 360 flags hanging in the rooms, but yet some of the eras they belong to remain shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Many of the club’s official historical records have been lost along the way, and now members such as Brenda O’Brien, Jean Kelsey, Ron Carroll, and Greg Marshall are searching high and low for anything that can help piece together the Pakenham Tennis Club’s formative years, right up until 1982. Their aim is to connect the dots of the decades leading up to the 1980s, but they can’t do it alone. They’ve been on fact finding missions to the State Library, and even Star News Group's Pakenham headquarters for clues - for anything that will help them better reconnect with their past. A number of famous storylines of the club’s past only serve to spur on the likes of Brenda, Jean, Ron, and Greg in their mission to uncover more. Margaret Court, the eventual winner of 24 singles majors - still the most famous record in tennis - once played on the Pakenham courts. Abe Kay was another who had played at Pakenham, while Cliff Letcher - a runner-up in three Grand Slam doubles events and a former Austrian Davis Cup representative - once called Pakenham his home club. Greg, or ‘Taurus’ as he’s known to most, even recalls a time when strong gusts of wind blew the roof off the clubrooms and all the way on to court four. His was the first name as president on the club’s office bearers board, which
Ron Carroll, Brenda O’Brien, Jean Kelsey, and Greg Marshall are putting the call out for the community’s help. 199575 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS only dates back to 1982. “It’s a terrible shame - you don’t want to lose your history,” Taurus explained. “It’s what forms the identity of a club.” Ron, meanwhile, remembers vividly the date that the first Anderson Street courts were opened - 6 November 1960, the date of his first child’s birth. But there have been other courts at various locations right around Pakenham over the years - including near the corner of Toomuc Valley Road; the police courts on the corner of James Street and the Princes Highway; the courts at the old Presbyterian church; and the
two courts built by Don Williamson on James Street, about where the senior citizens building currently sits. These courts were hired out to the club for a number of years before the existing courts were built. Now, the likes of Brenda, Jean, Ron, and Greg are putting the call out for anyone in the local area with a historical connection to the Pakenham Tennis Club - or even knowledge of its past - to come forward and help piece together this jigsaw. Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend and coral belt Julio Cesar Pereira headed along to Pakenham's Gracie Elite academy last week to take a number of its members through their paces. Julio Cesar's astonishing list of achievements and accolades speaks for itself - the cofounder of GFT (Grappling Fight Team), he's an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) world champion and Brazilian national champion in his own right. He's also coached multiple-time IBJJF world champion Rodolfo Vieira, who's now plying his trade in the famed Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Julio Cesar got his own start in the sport way back in 1974. He's a 7th-degree coral belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and earned his coral belt for his time served as a black belt in the discipline over a period of more than 30 years. He's made a number of visits to Melbourne, and Jhunior Guarnido's Gracie Elite academy, over the years - and explained last week that he's thrilled to see how the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu has evolved in the area over that time. "The first time he came here was seven years ago, and he keeps coming back every year-and-a-half, two years," said Guarnido, translating for Julio Cesar. "Every time he comes back, the sport has become bigger and bigger." Of the sport's evolution over recent years, Julio Cesar said participants in local gyms have noticed how Brazilian jiu-jitsu has helped them achieve a better work-life balance. "If you're having problems at work, you'll come to the gym at night and train and release all that stress, and then just relax," he said. "For people just training, but also for the athletes involved, the sport has evolved a lot." And, clearly, there are world-class athletes emerging in the discipline out of Melbourne. "A lot of really good black belts have come to Australia from Brazil and improved the sport," he explained. In Australia, and Melbourne more specifically, the sport is highly-respected, and so is the region's highly-qualified trainers and coaches.
