Murder ute call Shortly before his murder on Sunday 3 March, Mitat Rasimi was meeting over coffee in a cafe in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, police detectives have revealed.

At the time, occupants in a stolen orange Ford Ranger waited. When Mr Rasimi drove to his Dawn Avenue address, the ute followed.

Outside his home at 9.55pm, the ute drove past the 51-year-old father-of-four in his car.

He was then shot “numerous times”, police say.

Police believe Mr Rasimi was killed instantly. He was found in his car, which had rolled down the street and crashed into a pole.

“This is a really evil act,” Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper of Victoria Police’s Homicide Squad said as he revealed images of the suspect ute on 23 October.

“We’re dealing with brutal people with no concern for human life or the community here with the consequences of their actions.”

Mr Rasimi had connections to numerous organised crime groups, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, Det Insp Stamper said.

“Regardless of his background, Mr Rasimi was a father of four fairly young children.

“We have a grieving family here who deserve answers.

“And we have an outstanding offender or

offenders who need to be brought to account for this.”

A solid man was observed attempting to set the Ford Ranger alight about 30 minutes later in McMahens Road, Bangholme.

The ute, which had been stolen from a Melton home a few days earlier, is being forensically tested by police. It has been “positively linked” to the murder, Det Insp Stamper said.

He described the ute as “not uncommon but fairly distinctive”.

Still there are many “gaps” in what police know about this seven-month investigation.

Police are unsure how many offenders were in the ute involved in the drive-by shooting.

They are investigating whether Mr Rasimi was lured to the cafe as part of the ‘hit’.

The cafe is known as a popular hang-out for Albanian community members, Det Insp Stamper said.

“We know Mr Rasimi was very active in the Albanian community, particularly in that South Eastern region of Dandenong.”

The Homicide detective appealed for information from people who had seen the ute prior to the murder, or for Albanian community members to come forward.

Inspired to empower

By Danielle Kutchel For women fleeing domestic violence, some of the hardest things to leave behind are the social and familial connections - especially for migrant women, who find themselves suddenly alone in an unfamiliar country.

A Diwali event in Noble Park aimed to counter that by providing an opportunity for women to celebrate and enjoy one of the most joyous events on the South Asian calendar in a safe, women-only space.

The intimate celebration, held on Saturday 19 October, was organised by Inspire, an arm of InTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence.

Women were invited to come along with their children to enjoy face painting for kids, candle decorations, a photo booth, dances and an Indian feast.

"It was quite intimate. It was really a day for mothers and children; we sat together and shared a meal and talked and laughed," said chief executive officer of InTouch, Michal Morris.

"Everyone got involved in the activities and was open to talking to people they didn't know.

They dressed up and they came to celebrate."

The Diwali event was also special as it marked the first activity organised by InSpire.

"When we set up InSpire we spoke to many ex-clients and community members to find out what our purpose and role should be, and found that one of the loneliest times was around community festivals and feeling safe enough to celebrate festivals, so that's why we knew we had to provide an opportunity to have one," Ms Morris said.

Just under half of InTouch's clients are on some sort of temporary visa, she added, meaning that when they leave a relationship due to violence, they often lose any social and familial connections they have in the country and

Ash said it was great to see women dance and enjoy the day. have to start from scratch to rebuild their lives.

Ash, a project worker who helped organise the event and who has lived experience of violence, said she could recall the feelings of isolation she faced during various stages of her journey.

"Thinking back to festivals, it was a low period of my own journey. It was really awful to not be part of something anymore."

She joined the organising team for the Diwali event, keen to create "a festival for people to come together with food and music, that felt authentic and still held a lot of value in terms of how they celebrated back home".

Ash said that many of the guests thanked her afterwards and told her the celebration had been exactly what they needed - a bit of a breather in amongst their struggles and a way of meeting people going through a similar ex-

perience.

"Living in an unknown country, an event like this makes me feel I am part of the family.

I feel accepted," one guest said.

Ash said the event was empowering for the women who attended.

"It brought people together and when you're in a room of people with similar backgrounds and journeys, it's this whole foundation of strength."

"It was amazing to see them have a good time without thinking about it," she said.

IN BRIEF Accused burglar arrested at school

Victim ‘near death’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An Endeavour Hills woman was seconds away from death after being strangled three times by her boyfriend in her mother's home, a Dandenong magistrate has said.

Her attacker was jailed for up to 12 months for the assaults as well as for breaching his two community corrections orders at the time at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 October.

In what started as a heated argument about 19 September, the man first threw her on a bed and choked her with his hands for several seconds.

This was immediately followed by a scissors leg-hold around her neck on the bedroom floor for about one minute.

During that time, the victim struggled to breathe and feared she would black out.

The man apologised and released her. She fled the home, but soon returned to collect her handbag.

He intercepted her outside the bedroom, clasping her in another choke hold from behind for 60 seconds until she started to black out.

When released, she fled from the house, calling for help from a passer-by in the street.

The accused man yelled at her from the house that "I'm going to f***ing kill you".

He was arrested at the scene, and has been remanded in custody since the attack.

Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said the man conceded making the threat to kill but denied the extent of the alleged violence.

Mr Keating painted a picture of a man with an "unusual life" who had attended Haileybury College as well as being sometimes homeless.

The "charming young" man was able to speak well, yet had diagnosed cognitive deficiencies and had "fallen short" on a series of community corrections orders.

"The spirit seems willing but the flesh is weak."

The court also heard the man had attempted suicide at 14, and beset by alcohol and drug issues.

He had a possible acquired brain injury after being "brutally" bashed by up to six assailants in a McDonald's car park in Glen Waverley. He was knocked cold during the assault, and later hospitalised.

During sentencing, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man had breached his com-

munity correction orders several times and been in front of the court often in recent years.

The man had been remanded, he'd been supervised on CISP bail with judicial monitoring yet the offending continued, Mr Vandersteen noted.

"Why would you put him on a community corrections order?

"Everything has been tried to have him on orders in the community."

Mr Vandersteen said the choking of female partners was becoming more prevalent before courts.

"You don't see blokes trying to choke each other in a pub fight, so why do you do it with your partners?"

In strangling the victim, the man had restricted blood flow and oxygen to her brain.

"She was close, if not very close to serious injury or death. It would only have taken another 60 seconds."

The man's sentence included one month's jail for "historical" thefts from cars.

He is subject to a five-month non-parole period, and had already served 33 days in presentence detention.

Uni pathways open at Hallam

Teen mugged at knifepoint A teenage boy has been robbed at knifepoint by a group of males in central Dandenong.

The 14-year-old was walking near the intersection of Clow and Lonsdale streets when the group approached him about 8pm on Monday 21 October.

One of the group produced a knife and demanded the teen's watch and phone.

The victim complied with the demands. He received no injuries.

The robbers, described as African in appearance, left on foot.

Robbers attack in broad daylight A 40-year-old man has been attacked by would-be robbers in broad daylight near the Albion Hotel on Lonsdale Street Dandenong.

The Dandenong man had been walking along the footpath when the robbers demanded for cash and his phone about 10.45am on Saturday 19 October.

One of the robbers grabbed the victim by his hair, pulled him to ground and punched him in the face.

The victim fled without any loss of property.

He reported the attack at Dandenong police station.

He suffered a laceration inside his mouth.

One of the offenders was described as Persian appearance, the other of dark complexion.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The barriers to university will be cleared for Hallam Senior College students, as part of a revolutionary pilot program.

Federation University Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the college on 25 October to give Year 10, 11 and 12 students access to mentoring, study support and facilities at the uni's Berwick campus.

It is hoped to boost the 16 per cent of Year 12 students at the college who go onto university study.

About 50 per cent don't land a job or continue with study at TAFE or uni the following year.

"The beauty of this program is breaking down the barriers," Hallam Senior College partnerships manager Keith Pimblett said.

"It's something we have never had in this region.

"It's changing the dynamics for students going from high school to potentially highpaying jobs."

From 2020, the college's senior students will be given more support such as allowing Year 12s to study a first-year university subject as part of their VCE. Hallam Senior College teachers will be provided professional development training and innovative educational research.

Federation University vice-chancellor and president Professor Helen Bartlett said the university was "incredibly proud" of having the highest proportion of students in Australia who are the first in their family to go to uni.

A man has been arrested and charged over an alleged burglary of an Endeavour Hills school on 24 October.

Police say they were called to the school on James Cook Drive after an alarm was reportedly triggered about 5am.

A 34-year-old man allegedly wanted on outstanding warrants was found inside the school.

A bag containing allegedly stolen items was found nearby, police say.

He has been charged with burglary, theft and five counts of theft from motor vehicle.

He was presented directly to Dandenong Magistrates' Court that day.

"Every student should leave this college with their next step absolutely in mind, not 'What am I going to do next?'

"That's why the pathway program is important."

A suspected squat house at 13 Fifth Avenue Dandenong has been significantly damaged in a suspicious fire, police say.

A neighbour spotted flames rising from the single-storey weatherboard dwelling's roof about 2pm on Monday 21 October.

CFA fire crews were called, and controlled the fire.

The building wasn't attached to electricity or gas services at the time, police say.

The Green Cross Project, which is a joint initiative of the Dandenong Community Health Service and the Order of St Lazarus last week, won the 1999 National Community Link Award. Sponsored by the National Australia Bank, the award recognises the most innovative health service involving volunteers. Green Cross, commonly known as Ken's Bus operates in Greater Dandenong three nights a week. It goes to areas, mainly in Springvale and Dandenong where homeless youth tend to congregate.

DVHS manager Mr Peter Coghlan said more than 50 volunteers worked on Ken's Bus. "It is not just a needle exchange," he said. "It also provides doctors and registered nurses to assist on a broad range of health issues. "A barbecue dinner is also provided to ensure they get

a meal and to create an informal environment."

Brown calls for rethink

The council masterplan was approved in February, despite vigorous opposition from cyclists over the removal of its Maurice Kirby velodrome.

The tenant tennis, soccer and cricket clubs staunchly supported the proposed redevelopment.

During the countback, Ms Blade's votes will be redistributed to the remaining unsuccessful candidates from the 2016 election, according to preferences.

The eligible candidates' primary votes are not counted.

"From the advice of scrutineers, I've been given the understanding that 65-70 per cent of preferences were going my way," Cr Brown said.

The countback will take place at 10.30am on Monday 11 November at the City of Greater Dandenong council chamber, Lonsdale Street, Dandenong.

His life for others

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said.

“It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me.

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre.

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Former Greater Dandenong councillor Peter Brown's first priority is to call in the controversial Parkfield Reserve masterplan, if he is - as expected - returned to council on 11 November.

Mr Brown is the unbackable favourite to return via countback, filling the Paperbark Ward vacancy created by the sudden resignation of mayor Roz Blades.

A former mayor himself, Mr Brown was warily confident of being returned.

After all, he had failed to secure Meng Heang Tak's former seat by countback in 2018 despite having the most primary votes out of the remaining candidates.

"I certainly hope I am re-elected," Mr Brown said.

"It might be a case of absence making the heart grow fonder."

iCook Foods ‘lost family’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells To her great sorrow, Ingrid Rose knows there's little chance she'll get her job back.

She is one of 41 workers whose lives were upturned when Dandenong South commercial caterer iCook Foods was effectively ruined by a health authority-enforced shutdown in February.

It only adds to the frustration that eight months later, Greater Dandenong Council dropped all 96 of its food safety charges against the company and its director Ian Cook.

Ms Rose, who is deaf and from a Creolespeaking background, found a home away from home at the factory.

Twelve years ago, iCook Foods offered her part-time work alongside her sister Sharon Confait. She was paid the full rate, not an Australian Disabilities Enterprise rate.

Ms Confait translated in Creole for Ms Rose, and helped her learn the ropes.

She proved her worth as a food prep, packer and machine operator on the factory line, gaining promotion to a full-time role.

"Even though she can't hear, she could still communicate with everyone on a daily basis," Ms Confait said.

But since February, Ms Rose has retreated to a house-bound existence.

"I do miss my job," she says.

"I miss the people because it was a family business. We helped each other out."

Ms Confait said the staff were shocked by the sudden shut-down for 36 days, which led to the loss of all of the company's contracts. It had operated without blemish during her tenure, she said.

"We never expected something like that to happen. Every time the health inspectors had come down, we had all the paperwork ready.

"The place was always clean."

Sharon Confait and Ingrid Rose lost their jobs after iCook Foods was ruined. 199610 Ms Confait has found another job but reemployment is an uphill battle for Ms Rose.

She doesn't know AUSLAN sign language - and training in that would take years.

At the moment, she's seeking Centrelink approval for a disability support pension - and an exemption from looking for work in the meantime.

"She has been very depressed and stayed in her room," Ms Confait said of her sister's plight.

"She doesn't go out much."

"This decision was made in respect of the best use of ratepayer funds and that all noncompliance matters relating to the Food Act had been resolved."

Ms Confait said that is of little consolation for everyone in the company "from the top down".

Wayss towards housing

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Homelessness agency Wayss has been traditionally the crisis help for thousands in the South East.

Its incoming chief executive Elizabeth Thomas now wants the agency to be part of an affordable housing solution.

"Crisis response is not a solution to ending homelessness - quite simply, housing ends homelessness," she said.

Ms Thomas is looking for solutions outside the square.

Traditionally, advocates had fruitlessly sought more funding for social housing from the State Government.

It's time to look for investment from all three tiers of government, the community sector and the private sector, Ms Thomas said.

"The difference between good and bad solutions isn't money, but time and thought."

Recently Wayss, Windermere Child and Family Services, Shire of Cardinia, a private benefactor and a construction company partnered on a housing project in Main Street, Pakenham for women and children fleeing family violence.

Ten transitional housing units were built on undeveloped council-owned land.

The benefactor chipped in, and the builders offered a significant discount.

It is set to open next month with minimal State funding.

Ms Thomas says the aim is to give women time to re-establish their lives after escaping an abusive partner.

Normally at transitional accomodation, they're given just six months. Not enough for women to rebuild their lives, Ms Thomas says.

At Main Street, they will stay up to two years.

It's the type of model that Wayss will spruik to other councils like Greater Dandenong, which has declared a homelessness crisis.

New options were needed for a growing cohort of single women over 55, and newlyarrived families with perhaps up to nine children.

Shockingly, Wayss had no stocks except a

rooming house for a homeless 84-year-old woman.

"Rooming houses are not an option. Women, particularly older women, are very unsafe in rooming houses.

"We need to look at what we can do to meet that need."

Likewise, the traditional public housing stock of three-bedroom dwellings were too small for large newly arrived families.

Currently Wayss is homing three families each with children in two motel rooms each.

"When you think about the cost of $2000 a week each, what can we get in the private rental market for that?

"It's now part of our community diversity. We need to start looking at four bedroom houses."

On the radar for next year is a youth housing facility with six single-bedroom units and four double-bedroom units in Dandenong.

The tenants would be individually helped by support agencies.

"It's about establishing that sense of community and that need for belonging."

Ms Thomas has experience as the Public Trustee in Tasmania, and was managing director of Tasmania's first Common Ground social housing project.

There's also buckets of money available from ethical investment superannuation funds for social housing projects, she says.

Social housing, such as the kibbutz model, should be explored more widely in Australia, Ms Thomas said.

People of different generations, from the elderly to university students, NDIS recipients could live in supportive residential communities.

The mix would be a more positive, lifeaffirming option for seniors than aged-care homes, Ms Thomas said.

Wayss itself has capital reserves to draw upon.

"Wayss is not the largest player in the sector, however, because of our size we can be nimble and responsive to opportunities, as and when they present," Ms Thomas said.

"It also means that we can actively engage in strategic alliances and partnerships to maximise the impact of service we deliver to our clients and the community."

Shortfall is just not fine

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong has a shortfall of nearly $8.8 million in uncollected fines as a result of State agency Fines Victoria's IT debacle.

The fines mainly consist of parking infringements, as well as planning and building breaches and local law penalties for littering and animal control breaches.

They date back to 30 June 2019.

"We are still in the process of collecting this," Greater Dandenong corporate services director Mick Jaensch said.

"We look forward to improvements to the system to ensure its reliability into the future."

Fines Victoria has blamed software issues, which has led to a multi-million-dollar backlog of fine notices that haven't been sent to the would-be recipients.

Other councils such as Hobsons Bay and Port Phillip are threatening legal action for the

financial blackhole.

The State Government itself is facing a $328 million shortfall in uncollected fines, such as court-issued penalties, from 2018-19.

It had already ordered a review into Fines Victoria after a damning Victorian Ombudsman's report in March.

A Department of Justice spokesperson told ABC News that reminder notices hadn't been issued to Victorians "due to some complexity of merging data from the courts into the fines system".

"The obligation remains on Victorian debtors to pay their fines," the spokesperson said.

"The system is working and the debts don't go away.

"People have a responsibility to pay their fines and they should."

The State Government did not respond to Star Journal before deadline.

Companies shortlisted for Central Dandenong works A competitive expression of interest process in the ongoing Revitalising Central Dandenong project has seen strong interest from the private sector.

The process focused on a mixed-use development in the heart of Dandenong worth up to $300 million, which is set to be transformed.

Four companies have been shortlisted to progress to the next phase: Capital Alliance Group, Brady Group, MAB and Quintessential Equity.

The two-hectare development site is located next to Dandenong Railway Station and includes the Little India precinct, Melbourne's longest-standing cluster of Indian culture and commerce.

The four-short-listed companies have acknowledged the cultural significance of the site and have incorporated Indian-themed offerings in their submissions.

A Request for Proposal phase will commence later this month and close in February 2020. After this, Development Victoria will work with the successful developer to consult with the local community and businesses during the design phase, in collaboration with the City of Greater Dandenong.

Little India is part of the redevelopment site.

Debt attack

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 21-year-old hired painter has pleaded guilty to brutally bashing his employer into unconsciousness during a dispute over unpaid wages, a court has heard.

Rahmatulla Yazdani, without invitation, knocked on the front door of his boss's family home in Lynbrook on a Saturday afternoon in August.

The pair argued outside the house over the alleged $1100 non-payment, with the boss pushing Yazdani in the chest and challenging him to fight, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 22 October.

Yazdani struck the boss to the forehead with an unknown object, then repeatedly punched the victim to the head, police alleged.

He continued hitting even as the boss lay on the ground unconscious, police told the court.

When finished, Yazdani flicked his cigarette to the ground, and was driven away in a waiting car.

An ambulance was called by a witness. The victim was transported to Dandenong Hospital slipping in and out of consciousness.

He suffered a deep laceration and fracture to his brow, a laceration to the bridge of his nose that required stitches as well as seven broken teeth.

The dental repair bill was at least $6800, the court heard.

Yazdani, sporting a significantly swollen and bruised right hand, was interviewed by police via an interpreter the next day.

He broke down and cried when shown the extent of the victim's injuries, the court heard.

"If he hadn't touched me I wouldn't have fought him," he told police.

Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy told the court that Yazdani was provoked, unarmed and struck the victim only once.

Yazdani had been working for the boss for

four months and was constantly met with "excuses" over not being paid.

He had earlier approached police for help but was told it was a civil dispute - and he was unlikely to succeed due to being a sub-contractor, Mr Kandasamy said.

The Iranian-born refugee had a severe intellectual disability that impaired his reasoning and coping skills.

"He doesn't know how to manage stress and that's a contributing factor," Mr Kandasamy said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Yazdani must have struck the victim "many, many times", given the extent of the injuries.

He noted Yazdani was on corrections orders at the time for two counts of recklessly causing serious injury in 2016.

In those previous cases, the two victims had each suffered broken faces.

He had failed to do the required unpaid work on the orders but had otherwise engaged well with behavioural programs, the court heard.

"The community corrections order hasn't achieved the outcome you would hope because you're here today with a victim that's suffered a high-end injury," Mr Vandersteen said.

"If not for the intellectual disability, he'd be looking at years of jail.

"He's incredibly violent when he offends."

Yazdani accepted Mr Vandersteen's sentence indication of jail followed by a CCO. He was issued a three-year intervention order, banning him from contacting the employer, except through a lawyer.

Yazdani was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 5 December.

Snapshots of one humanity

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A lavish coffee-table book captures the spectacular assortment of faiths and places of worship in Greater Dandenong.

Many Faiths, One People was a "living history" project dreamed about for more than a decade.

Photographer Hilton Stone and Greater Dandenong IFN's Helen Heath conceived the book which collects photos of IFN faith leaders and community members.

It was originally to be launched in 2014 to mark the IFN's 25th anniversary.

But it was deferred to produce the highquality book launched for what is the oldest Australian IFN's 30-year birthday, Ms Heath said.

"As Mr Chin Tan states in his foreword, this book is the culmination of over a quarter cen-

tury of good will and devotion to diversity.

"It is a tribute to all those faith and spiritual communities whose presence has greatly enriched the City of Greater Dandenong."

To Ms Heath, the visual feast sparks questions such as what does a place of worship mean to people and a community.

And what is its special meaning for a community when so many risk religious persecution all around the world, she ponders.

"We hope the thoughts expressed by the faith leaders about the importance of understanding each other as we come from different faiths, will be a model and education for people to think about in their relationships with others who believe differently to them."

Many Faiths, One People will be launched at a free event at Dandenong Library on Wednesday 30 November, 7pm-8.30pm. Books are available for $30.

A milestone

June and Oscar Draper, centre, with long-time friends Beatrice Harris and Philomena D’’Castro, to celebrate 60 years of marriage.

Going the distance Once refused entry as migrants, Oscar and June Draper never gave up on their dream of living in Australia.

The couple, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 14 October, were initially rejected by Australian authorities after fleeing Burma’s military regime in 1964.

So they and their four children instead resettled in London. They lived there for 12 years and had another two kids.

When the children reached school-age,

June found work at the Australian High Commission in London.

This led to the family being accepted into Australia under the skilled migration program.

They arrived in Melbourne a week before Christmas in 1976.

The next year, they moved into their Springvale home - their dwelling for the past 42 years.

June was employed by the Public Works Department, Oscar as a technician who worked with cables and early optic fibre projects for

Telecom (later known as Telstra).

Recently the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their six children, many grandchildren and friends.

Two special friends joined the celebration.

Beatrice Harris, who flew in from Sydney, and Philomena D’Castro, from Perth, were close family friends while in Burma.

They had attended the Draper’s wedding at St Mary’s Cathedral in Rangoon, Burma (now known as Yangon, Mayanmar) in 1959.

Emilia Pascual has celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of family and friends.

A special tea party was held for the grandmother at her residence at Viewhills Manor Aged Care Home in Endeavour Hills on Friday 11 October.

Mrs Pascual, was all smiles as other residents joined the milestone celebration which featured a sponge cake, and an entertainer who performed some classical hits.

She was born in Appari Cagayan, a small province in the Philippines on 14 October, 1919, and lived in the capital Manila for most of her life before migrating to Australia in February 1980.

She finished school early and married Mariano Pascual, an engineer, and had six children and 19 grandchildren.

Her daughter, Cherry Kelly, said her mum’s secret to a long life was being “surrounded with very loving family,” adding she had never smoked or had alcohol in her life.

Small art’s long legacy Entries are still open for City of Dandenong's annual miniature art competition 9 x 5.

Each submitted work is confined to a 9-inch by 5-inch panel, a nod to a uniform exhibition of artworks by famous Australian artists in 1889.

In that original show held in Melbourne, Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin produced artwork on 9-inch by 5-inch cigar box lids.

He’s relishing the journey

By Tyler Lewis Every time Comrey Edgeworth thuds his Kookaburra bat into the wicket, turns his head over his left shoulder and looks at the bowler steaming in, it is a singular battle he cherishes.

Whether it is scoring a run or depriving the bowler of his scalp, every over has six sets of contests he wants to win for his beloved Dandenong Premier cricket side.

Labelling himself as a cricket nerd, Edgeworth thrives on the challenge of a bowler vying for his wicket.

“I would say I am an absolute nerd of the game,” he told the Journal.

“I adore the game, I love the stats, I love the contest between bat and ball - it is something that really excites me.

“I don’t really get nervous, I back myself and I guess if you are not good enough, you are not good enough is the mentality I have.

“The mindset going into every ball is ‘win this ball, win this contest’.

“If you win this contest, getting a run or not going out - whatever your goal is, win that contest and the next ball is a new contest.

“I know my game, I know what gets me out, so I try to limit the opportunities for the bowler to get me out and maximise my ability to score runs.

“Whether that is through the off-side or through the leg-side.”

Before cementing his spot in the top order for Dandenong, the prelude to his building career all began watching his dad play, before it was time for Edgeworth to don his own creams and etch his name into history.

“My first memory of cricket was hitting balls with a couple mates while watching my dad play his competitive cricket on the weekends,” he said.

“I was probably about eight years old in the under-12s (when I started). Our final year of under-12s we had a pretty good team - (we) won that season undefeated, and won the premiership comfortably.

“I did play a fair bit of representative cricket as a kid, and played the CMCA under-14 team. “(I) Played Hatch for the Elsternwick Cricket Club, played the CMCA under-16 team as well as a bottom ager. I played the Bayside Breakers as a top ager in under-18s, we won the state championship that year, played on the MCG. “That was one of the highlights (of junior cricket), playing on the MCG as a 17-year-old.”

In the 2017/18 season, Edgeworth burst out of the blocks from his previous years in the lower grades with a monstrous year in the seconds. Consequently, the form saw the classy batsman earn a first XI debut and have well over 500 runs to his name before Christmas.

Despite still having some criticisms on the season, the summer was still a cherished one

Rising Dandenong batsman Comrey Edgeworth describes himself as a 'nerd' of the game. for Edgeworth, who said the feeling of that type of form is startling.

“It is quite an amazing feeling when you’re batting and you don’t worry about going out,” he said.

“There is no nerves, no second thoughts about ‘what if I miss this’ or ‘what if I knick this’ or ‘what if I hit this to the fielder’.

“You are just in the zone and know your game inside out, and it just flows. You get in that sort of form and you feel like nothing can go wrong.

“At that period of time, the ones were potentially undefeated or had only lost one game so they were going really well in the top four.

“The twos were going well as well, so the message from the coach was ‘keep doing what you are doing and when a spot does open up for it you will be ready to go and take it with both hands’.

“I did get my opportunity in that year, I got a couple of scores but my form faded away unfortunately.”

Many young cricketers have an abundance of influences, and along with his dad who he speaks to often about his game, Edgeworth has the luxury of a running between the wickets with one of his biggest influences.

“He (dad) is absolutely someone I talk a lot of cricket and a lot of my batting with,” he said.

“He was the junior coach at Kingston Heat when I started so he coached me all the way through.

“He has coached a couple of other guys who have gone on to play District ones and twos he is definitely one who I lean on for cricket knowledge.

“In terms of people at Dandenong, Brett Forsyth is a really good one who helps out with all the younger batsmen at the club.

“Winning the Ryder last year he has a wealth of knowledge and talent, he is always happy to help out with my technique and throw me balls whenever.

“It is a good thing having someone of his experience giving back to the club, it always helps.”

While loving the statistics of the game, Edgeworth is hopeful that in the many years to come, aside from a premiership, one of the achievements to his name is one that can’t be recorded in the MyCricket database.

“The main reason we play the game I guess, I want to win a couple of flags,” he said.

“I played in the white ball one a couple years ago but I did miss the two-day flag. To play in a two-day premiership is something I would love to achieve.

“But hopefully I am still enjoying my cricket like I am today. I am just really enjoying the cricket with my mates.”

Miller announces his retirement, leaves a lasting legacy

By Mick Floyd Sandown Park greyhounds chief executive officer Greg Miller announced his retirement at the club’s annual general meeting on Tuesday, 22 October.

Since joining Sandown Park in October 2010, Miller has led the club through a period of significant growth as well as championing a number of initiatives, both on and off the track.

Under Miller’s leadership, the club has developed a number of innovative racing series including the Speed Star match race series, the Launching Pad sweepstakes, and consolidated the TAB Melbourne Cup’s standing as the world’s greatest greyhound race.

Away from the track, Miller played a key role in the development of Greyhound Clubs Australia and Greyhound Clubs Victoria, secured a number of non-raceday income streams, and helped introduce a new wave of participants in the sport through initiatives such as the National Greyhound Draft which introduced over 1000 new owners to the sport in its inaugural edition.

“I’m very proud of everything the club has achieved in my time here," he said. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

"Everyone involved at the club - the board, the full-time and casual staff, everyone - has an industry first attitude.

“None of what we have been able to do would have been possible without their love of the dogs and enthusiasm for the sport.

“But I’ve been here nine years now and for my family and myself, it’s time to slow down a bit.”

Sandown chairman Neil Brown was effusive in his praise for Miller’s contribution not just to Sandown Park, but to the sport of greyhound racing across the country.

“Greg has had an enormous impact on the sport of greyhound racing in his time here,” said Brown.

“Coming from a successful career in Australian Rules football, Greg brought a new perspective not just on how the club and the sport operated, but its place in the broader sporting landscape. His enthusiasm and passion for the sport ensures the club is well positioned to continue to grow into the future.

“On behalf of the board, I wish Greg and his family all of the very best in retirement.”

Miller will vacate the position in early 2020 with his replacement to be announced in due course.

Nanopoulos snags seven

By Tyler Lewis and Nick Creely Although James Nanopoulos ran riot with the ball against a star-studded Geelong side, Dandenong still faces an uphill battle to claim victory on Saturday.

With seemingly perilous overhead conditions unavoidable and a wicket that, in recent times, has misbehaved, returning skipper Tom Donnell won the toss and sent the Cats in.

It took only two Jakeb Thomas deliveries for the decision to pay off with the big quick sending Geelong's opener Mitch Reid back to the shed inside the first over of the day.

But it was the elegance and experience of James Nanopoulos who did the brunt of the damage from then on.

Nanopoulos claimed two wickets in the space of three balls to change the game early on and move the Cats to 3/19 - with his figures at that stage 2/2 from five overs.

With Eamonn Vines dead-batting everything at one end, gloveman Josh McDonald opted to fight fire with fire by going after the likes of Peter Cassidy in an attempt to shift momentum.

Cassidy ultimately got his man when the right-hander spooned a drive to the debutant in Zac Grundmann-Perera at mid-off.

When Vines was trapped in front LBW, Nanopoulos had three and looked nearly impossible for the batsman to score from, let alone survive.

All concerns of the threat of the Dandenong bowling attack washed away with the quick claiming 7/43 from 15.5 overs and assisting heavily in bundling the Cats out for 155.

Springvale South's overseas pro Ateeq Javid crunched a century - only days after flaying 88 in a Twenty20 against Berwick - in Saturday's one day match against Heinz Southern Districts at Alex Nelson Reserve.

With day one washed out, the Bloods and Cobras played out a 37-over per innings match.

Batting first, Javid, alongside aggressive opener Nathan King (42) crunched 63 for the first wicket, setting the scene for a potentially mammoth total.

Javid (110) continued on his merry way, combining with Bloods legend Craig Slocombe (23) for a 44-run stand, displaying the kind of class that'll be on show for the Turf 1 season.

Playing the anchor despite going at a run-aball, Javid crossed over for a brilliant century, a knock glittered with 16 fours.

But a more disciplined bowling effort - particularly in the final few overs - ensured the Bloods were rolled for 222 off the final ball of the innings, with Udara Hettige snaring a late hat-trick to finish with 6/52 off seven overs, while Josh Dinger continued his strong start to the season with 3/21 off eight terrific overs.

The Bloods looked to have seemingly had the game in their grasp despite champs Kaushalya Weeraratne (38) and Michael Davies (46) looking good through the middle period, but Cameron Dinger (43 not out) made a late charge at an unlikely run chase.

Despite sending the ball flying to the boundary, the Cobras ran out of time, finishing 7/217 off 37 overs in a narrow loss to last season's grand finalists.

In the remaining games, Buckley Ridges (9/233) easily accounted for North Dandenong (110 and 3/135) on day two of their clash at Park Oval, while Narre South (9/144) drew with Berwick at Strathaird Recreation Reserve and Hallam Kalora Park also drew with St Mary's (7/170).

Matthew Cox is making a habit out of making monstrous scores in the shortest form of cricket.

The Heinz Southern Districts favourite son - who is now playing his cricket with Tooradin in West Gippsland - returned to the Cobras with an almighty bang, belting an incredible 131 in the opening round of the Dandenong District Twenty20 competition last Wednesday evening.

Returning as a marquee player, Cox - who incredibly made 176 not out in a Twenty20 last year for Tooradin - belted 12 sixes as the Cobras put Lynbrook to the sword.

Coming in at 3/15, Cox combined with former St Kilda football star Stephen Milne (26) for an 85-run partnership, before going absolutely berserk with a foray of sixes flying over the rope at Reedy Recreation Reserve.

The Cobras eventually posted 8/191 off their 20 overs, with Dylan Hayes (3/31) the

pick of the bowlers.

The visitors were eventually bundled out for just 57 in the 14th over, with skipper Jay Walia top scoring with 24.

Down at Alex Nelson Reserve, Berwick trumped Springvale South in a last-over thriller.

The Bloods won the toss and had a bat first, where Ateeq Javid (88) and Dandenong champ Brett Forsyth (37) pummeled 87 for the first wicket, before the Bears slowly managed to claw their way back.

While wickets were hard to come by, the Bears tightened things up with ball in hand to restrict the home side to a manageable 3/163.

And the Bears got the job done, racing down the total with four balls to spare and three wickets left in the shed, with in-form opener Jordan Cleland (49) leading the way for the visitors.

In the remaining games, Buckley Ridges (3/105) easily accounted for Hallam Kalora Park (102), with Bucks captain-coach David

White (58 not out) once again dominating, Berwick Springs (7/149) got the points over Parkfield (131), Cranbourne (6/143) defeated Dandenong West (142), and North Dandenong (5/146) got its campaign off to a strong start against St Mary's (5/141).
