Gumbuya World is the 2019 Casey Cardinia Business of the Year. CEO Ron Weinzierl accepted the award on behalf of his team at the gala dinner held at the Cranbourne Racecourse on Friday night 18 October. He thanked the judges and said it was exciting to think where Gumbuya may go in the future. Stage two of the hugly popular tourist park is expected to open on Melbourne Cup Weekend, further cementing its reputation as one of Victoria’s premier tourist destinations. “In our second year we are only just getting started,“ Mr Weinzierl said. He congratuled the other winners and said the owners of Gumbuya were pleased to be operating in such a collaborative region. “Together we can achieve amazing things.“ Ealier in the evening Gumbuya won the award for Tourism and Travel. Gumbuya World boasts a state-ofthe-art Wildlife Trail allowing visitors to experince more than 50 species of Australian wildlife. Oasis Springs has 12 thrilling water experiences and Outback Explorer offers 11 exciting rides for all ages. “Whether it’s spending endless hours in the water park, getting up-close and personal with wildlife, enjoying the rides and attractions or attending one of our many events, Gumbuya World has something for everyone,“ Mr Weinzierl said. This year Gumbuya has undergone a major expansion as stage two takes shape.

CEO Ron Weinzierl and his team won the Tourism award, before Gumbuya was named the Casey Cardinia Buisness of the Year. As part of stage two Oasis Springs, the theme park’s water world, will almost double in size. In addition to the new family wave pool, visitors will enjoy six brand new gigantic waterslides comprising two monster twister slides and thrilling four-lane rally race slides. The expansion is part of a major redevelopment of Gumbuya World set to continue over the next three years. When completed the theme park will offer 50 new attractions as well as

a range of onsite accommodation, new cafes, shops, a chocolate factory and a microbrewery. It will also include Indigenous, dinosaur and woolshed precincts for educational programs. By 2022, it is anticipated that Gumbuya World will attract a million visitors each year from around Australia and the globe – ensuring tourism remains strong in Victoria and the Casey-Cardinia region. The judge was blown away by the

FIRM’S FAMILY VALUES WIN OUT The family-orientated culture of Nobelius Land Surveyors impressed the judges of this year’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards. A CUT ABOVE THE COMPETITION New York Barbers is a slice of the Big Apple in the heart of Berwick. The business was established in 2014 by owner Mario Fallace to provide a quality men’s grooming service in the South East suburbs and Casey region. The state-of-the-art barber shop was inspired by the traditional, old school New York barber shops and the famous city itself. Under Mario’s watchful eye, the team of barbers service all gentleman providing haircuts, beard trims and shaves. Mario’s love for the Big Apple is evident in the carefully curated space which includes arresting photographs of iconic New York landscapes. One corner of the barbers is devoted

to the history of the craft with framed antique cut throat razors and a centuryold barber’s chair. Mario describes New York Barbers as an “old school barber shop with a modern fusion". “When I decided originally to open a barbers it would have been very easy to paint a white wall and put in chairs and mirrors and call it a barbers shop,“ explained Mario. “But I got to thinking about barbering and how big it was in the 1920s through to the 1960s in New York. At that time there was a barber on every corner. That’s why I wanted to have a New York inspired feel and hence why we became the New York Barbers." Customers and those waiting with

them can also indulge in a coffee, frappe, milkshake, cup of tea, soft drink or hot chocolate from the cafe. Mario says his team of barbers are like family. “The team is awesome. They are well experienced in all aspects of barbering from close shaves, to modern fades. It’s about looking after men. “I am really proud of my team because that is exactly what they do. Works are underway to remove the dangerous and congested Cardinia Road level crossing in Pakenham. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan joined Bass MP Jordan Crugnale at the site to inspect works to build a temporary road on the eastern side of Cardinia Road. A road bridge will be built over the rail line on Cardinia Road to reduce congestion, slash travel times and improve safety for the growing community. "Even though the contract for this was only awarded a couple of months ago, it's great to see work is already being done to keep the traffic flowing as much as possible while we're getting on with the construction of the road bridge," Ms Allan said. "Removing the Cardinia Road level crossing with a road bridge allows us to reduce disruption to people driving and catching the train." To safely build the temporary road, some daytime lane closures and full overnight closures of Cardinia Road will be in place from now through November and December. From Sunday 24 to Friday 29 November and Sunday 1 to Tuesday 3 December, Cardinia Road will be closed between Shearwater Drive and Henry Road from 9pm to 5.30am. The shared use path on the western side of Cardinia Road will also be closed from 24 November until the project is completed in 2021. "There will be times where there will be disruption to the normal flow of traffic but the end game, of course, is getting rid of this bottleneck all together," she added. "We work really hard to deliver all of our projects as quickly as we can but also in a way that minimises the disruption - there will always be some disruption however with projects of this size and scale." The boom gates at Cardinia Road are down for up to a third of the morning peak and by 2026, more than 24,000 drivers will travel through the crossing every day. Diwali festival delights By Mitchell Clarke Despite adverse weather conditions, the community response to Cardinia's Diwali event exceeded expectations. From food trucks to a Diwali market, from workshops to performances, organisers say it was a "fun filled day" where people looked beyond their own cultures and religions. "There was a curiosity among people to know more about Diwali and the story behind it," Aanchal Meshram from Indian Association Casey Cardinia (IACC) said. Diwali is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions across the world, with the festival coinciding with the Hindu New Year, ultimately celebrating new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. This event featured an indoor/outdoor space with about 3000 people from all ethnic backgrounds joining in the celebration. "It was a great example of how Cardinia Shire is growing and accepting multiculturalism and also how it has helped towards social cohesion and activating spaces," Ms Meshram said. "As we have been running workshops in schools and libraries for the past few weeks, it created general awareness among people. "The diverse society we live in, festivals and celebrations are great ways to bring everyone together and build a close knit community." Another Diwali event will be held at Gumbuya World on Saturday 2 November from 10am to 9pm with a fully accessibly park including food trucks, dancers and DJ sets before the evening wraps up with a laser show on Indian Drums.

Childcare centre gets the greenlight By Brendan Rees A childcare centre for 54 children will be built in Hampton Park, despite Casey Council rejecting the plans, the state's highest planning tribunal has ruled. The council rejected Winnima Realty Pty Ltd 's proposal for 9 Winnima Avenue on the grounds of location suitability, the impact on the character of the locality, and amenity impacts on neighbours. Two nearby residents also opposed the grant of a permit. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) overturned the council's decision on 7 October, allowing the project to go ahead. VCAT member Michael Deidun said in his report the development was appropriate with the building design, setbacks, facade treatment, building materials and colour scheme being "consistent with the surrounding residential environment." "I find that the proposal will not result in any unreasonable built form impacts on the surrounding properties, including by way of

visual bulk, overlooking or overshadowing," the report said. He further stated the design of the building and acoustic fences will ensure that noises from the childcare centre "will be appropriately contained on-site, and limit the amenity impact on the adjoining residents." Mr Deidun stated a number of residents raised concerns about Winnema Avenue being used as a "shortcut" through the residential neighbourhood. But Mr Deidun believed the proposed childcare centre would not result in "unreasonable traffic impact on the surrounding road environment" despite an additional 216 vehicle movements being added to the local road network. "As Winnima Avenue provides access to an arterial road to its north, and a collector road to its south, the traffic movements from this child care centre will be split between these two destinations. As such, no single point along Winnima Avenue will experience the additional 216 vehicle movements that will be

generated from this proposed development," he stated. Mr Deidun dismissed suggestions it would be expected non-residential land uses located within a residential zone would "appear just the same as the nearby residential properties." "Non-residential land uses have a particular form and function, often require additional car parking, and have other attributes or requirements that must be provided in a proposed design," he stated. Casey acting manager of statutory planning and building Services Nick Moore said council declined the application for the childcare centre as it failed to comply with the local policy of the Casey Planning Scheme. "Some of the main concerns raised by council included the site's location not being amongst other non-residential uses, its potential to detract from the neighbourhood character, and the potential to cause adverse amenity impacts to the surrounding residents," he said. The proposed hours of operation will be restricted from 6.30am to 7pm on weekdays.

Sikh celebration honours community By Brendan Rees The 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism was celebrated at Bunjil Place for the first time. Organised by Sikh Volunteers Australia, the ceremony attracted hundreds of people who gathered for a seminar themed 'Share and Care' where various community groups were awarded in recognition of their service in cooperation, multiculturalism and support for people in need. The event was attended by MPs, Casey councillors, council staff and representatives of south east organisations. Guest speakers included Tim Costello, the Australian Baptist Minister and current chief advocate of World Vision Australia; Philip Rosie of Victoria Council of Churches, and Jasbir Singh Suropada of the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria. A big-hearted group of Sikh Volunteers also provided free vegetarian food on the day. In her speech, Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was "incredibly proud" so many people call City of Casey their home. "We love our Sikh Community and are so grateful for our Sikh Volunteers. Jail time for baby killer A man found guilty of shaking his then-partner's baby in Cranbourne West, causing the child's death, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Jesse Vinaccia, who was 22 at the time of the offence, was sentenced in the Supreme Court on Monday 14 October, more than three years after the child's death. In his sentencing remarks, Justice Michael Croucher noted Vinaccia's extensive admissions to police and the remorse he had expressed, including a suicide attempt following the baby's death, despite entering a not-guilty plea. Justice Croucher also noted Vinaccia's "good prospects of rehabilitation". The court found that on the evening of 23 January 2016, Kaleb Baylis-Clarke was found unresponsive in his cot by Vinaccia, who had been caring for him while his mother, Erin Baylis-Clarke was at work. Vinaccia was in a relationship with Ms Baylis-Clarke at the time and lived with them in Cranbourne West. The infant was rushed to the Monash Medical Centre and placed on life support. While he had no external injuries, he did have serious brain injuries and bleeding in both retinas which examiners concluded had been caused by violent shaking. Vinaccia later admitted to police that he had "grabbed [Kaleb] off ... his [mat] with a bit of force"; that he may have "shaken [Kaleb] with ... quite significant force"; that he put him down in his cot "pretty rough"; and that he was "frustrated" at the time after a conversation with Kaleb's father. Kaleb died on 30 January 2016 after his life support was switched off. Vinaccia was found guilty of child homicide in June this year. Vinaccia must serve at five and a half years before being eligible for parole.

Police have charged a man with sexual assault of a 22-year-old Hampton Park woman which allegedly occurred in Dandenong on Tuesday 15 October. The 21-year-old Chadstone man was charged with sexual assault, assault with intent to commit a sexual assault, sexual activity directed at another person, sexual exposure and commit indictable offence while on bail in relation to an alleged sexual assault in a Cleeland Street carpark about 1.20pm. However, Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are appealing for witnesses or footage following the incident. The 22-year-old Hampton Park woman was not physically injured during the incident. The Chadstone man will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 25 October. Detectives are urging anyone who may have been in the carpark at the time, or driving in the area with dashcam footage, to come forward. What made you decide to start your charity Clean as Casper in offering free showers to the community? Around five years ago, I set up a charity called Orange sky laundry in the south east (a mobile laundry service for the homeless). I met a homeless gentlemen named Casper who revealed to me one night that he had not showered for 6-7 years. He had purchased internet security for me after over hearing me saying I needed it. As I was not allowed to accept any gifts, I bartered with him and in exchange, I promised to build him a mobile shower- and so the journey began. What days/times does the mobile truck operate? Mondays 4pm-7.30pm Wednesdays 7pm -8.30am Thursday: 12pm -2.30pm Thursdays 6pm -8.30pm Friday 6.30pm -8.30pm Saturdays 7 m -9pm What business do you run on the side? An 18-year-old Cranbourne West man was arrested in relation to a robbery in Carnegie and related deceptions offences. The man was arrested on Monday 21 October in relation to a robbery that occurred on Rosstown Road in Carnegie on 8 October. Police have charged the man with deception offences and was bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrate’s Court on 20 November. Investigations into the robbery are ongoing. A 16-year-old Pakenham boy was also arrested in relation to a robbery on Rosstown Road, Carnegie on 8 October and related deceptions offences. He will appear at a Children’s Court later this week. Police have arrested 57 people over the past three days as part of Operation Liege to crack down on youth offending across the state. Fifty-seven people were arrested and multiple charges have been laid for offences including carjacking, aggravated burglary, robbery and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. Warrants were executed in suburbs includ-

ing Cranbourne, Clyde North, Dandenong, Narre Warren, Frankston, Pakenham, Reservoir, Sunshine, Truganina, Lara and Norlane. The majority of those arrested are aged between 15 and 21-years-old. North West Metro Region Commander Tim Hansen said Operation Liege was a state-wide investigative and enforcement capability established in July to disrupt high-harm, highimpact youth offending.

A mobile shower charity truck providing free showers to the disadvantaged and people experiencing homelessness in the south east has had an upgrade. After working out of a trailer, Clean as Casper founder Steve Winterton said getting their truck on the road was a “huge relief” after winning a $20,149 in the State Government’s Pick My Project initiative. “It’s quadrupled the amount of people using our shower already,” he said. He said the truck was purchased two years ago but they didn’t have the funds to fit it out. “It’s really saved us ... the name will get out there and people can help us more.” The truck now has one shower, a washing machine, a dryer and cabinetry.Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas said project such as the mobile shower for the homeless displayed “the power of community engagement as we seek to help those in our area who need it most,” adding it would “offer more privacy, more locations, and greater support.” Mr Winterton said it wasn’t just about peo-

In case you didn't notice, last week was AntiPoverty Week and Casey council did absolutely nothing about it - even though no community, especially in the south- eastern suburbs, is free from poverty. According to the Victorian Council Of Social Research ( VCOSS ) there is not one community that has not been impacted by poverty today. Moreover, under the spatial-modelling used by VCOSS the common face of poverty is now found in the south-eastern suburbs with many families struggling to get by. Often people living in poverty are under-24 years of age with more than one in every six children in Victoria living in poverty. Further, more than a quarter of adults living in poverty have a job. Low incomes and public policy are driving people into poverty in the south-eastern suburbs. In my view, councils really need to take a stand against the lack of affordable housing, advocate for more training and education opportunities, and categorically reject Federal government austerity policies. Most of all, local government can help make a difference because it has the capacity to actually reduce some of the cost of living pressures impacting on many local residents. Recently Casey council has refused an opportunity to support a national campaign to increase Youth Allowance and New Start assistance for all unemployed people. Big plans for Narre By Brendan Rees Narre Warren Village could be in line for a facelift after Casey Council unveiled its visionary plan for major development in the area. Councillors voted a their 15 October meeting to adopt the draft Narre Warren Village Urban Design Framework which proposes to revitalise the village - a designated precinct within the Fountain Gate Narre Warren Metropolitan Activity Centre located adjacent to Narre Warren rail station. Key plans include: an improved Webb Street precinct street enhancement an urban plaza traffic redirected from Webb Street change of bus movement a shared path bridge leading straight to the village for pedestrian and cyclists enhanced train station environment green infrastructure including water sensitive urban design features for storm water management Casey manager of city design and construction Trevor Griffin said the framework would encourage employment close to home, more sustainable transport modes to reduce congestion and car dependence, a vibrant core of activity and lifestyle options around the train station, and improved safety and attractiveness of the centre as a destination. The framework would "likely be ongoing for many years" or "accelerated" if council is successful in securing funding or if market conditions support early investment, he said. "In the next three to five years, council will aim to develop project proposals to submit to the State Government to improve local traffic snarls, upgrade the bus interchange and improve pedestrian safety around the train station," Mr Griffin said. "Council believes that the train station car park could be safer and better managed

A car became airborne and plummeted into a front bedroom of a home in Narre Warren on Wednesday 16 October. The incident, which occurred at the corner of Sinners Ave and Kurrajong Rd at 3.30pm, left the house extensively damaged. Narre Warren State Emergency Service, police, ambulance, and firefighters from Hallam CFA attended the scene. An SES spokeswoman said it's believed the elderly woman driver lost control of her Volkswagen Golf after a bag became stuck under her brake pedal. SES volunteers installed acrow props to hold up the house's structure in place as well tarping the damaged room. Amubulance Victoria spokesman Jamie First said paramedics treated a woman in her 70s although she was not taken to hospital. A new gallery exhibition at Bunjil Place is promising to be the most accessible yet, thanks to an Auslan video label pilot. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) video labels have been loaded onto two iPads, which are available by request at the Bunjil Place Gallery front desk to accompany members of the Auslan community as they visit the David Griggs: Between Nature and Sin exhibition. The pilot is aimed at deaf or hard of hearing people who use Auslan, parents and children of deaf people, Auslan students and interpreters. Arts access/inclusion officer at Bunjil Place, Jessica Moody, said while Auslan tours are not new within the gallery sector, they often involve a tour guide who is well versed in the exhibition and who can take a tour group around it. The downfalls of this approach include the tours being bound to one day or time, and an inability to stop at every piece in the exhibition. Ms Moody was keen to encourage the agency of individual visitors, and with Auslan video labels, visitors can visit at any time during opening hours and navigate the gallery. There are twelve videos loaded onto each iPad which correspond with the labels inside the gallery. Users can select the thumbnail corresponding to the title of the artwork they are looking at to view the Auslan video. Each video features a deaf artist who has translated the English artwork labels into Auslan. The videos are captioned in English and can be watched in any order. “At Bunjil Place, we welcome all. The Auslan labels remove the barrier of written or spoken language, transforming it into the accessible language of Auslan,” Ms Moody said. Sarah Davies, who was born profoundly deaf, said she found the iPad and Auslan labels in the gallery easy to use. “Accessibility is important to me as this gives me more choice and control in attending exhibitions, theatre, movies and general

Truckie’s hay-fire heroics By Jed Lanyon A Lyndhurst truck driver has recounted the moment he helped his mate just seconds before his truck carrying hay bales burst into flames in Healesville. Fred Reid had just finished delivering a load in Healesville when he got the call for help from David Ayres on his CB radio. Mr Ayres had been driving his Kenworth truck, transporting two trailers loaded with hay along the Maroondah Highway when he thought he may have a flat tyre about 7.30am on 20 September. He pulled into a BP and put the callout for help on his radio for anyone in the area. "He called up and asked if I could sneak around him to see what the trouble was," Mr Reid recalled. Mr Reid said Mr Ayres was in "all sorts of bother" with smoke coming out the middle of the B-double. "Being a load of hay, in town and next to a petrol station, I suggested let's get it out of town before you lose the whole truck," Mr Reid said. Mr Ayres then drove the truck about 1.5 km out of Healesville, just past Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road where he and Mr Reid separated the two trailers and his prime mover to prevent the fire from spreading. "Literally seconds after we got the prime mover out from under the trailer, it just burst into flames," Mr Reid said. "We were standing probably 30 metres away and the heat was burning us; that's how hot it was." Without his assistance, Mr Reid believes Mr Ayres may have been left in a situation where his truck would have ignited in town, leaving him with no choice but to run for his own safety. "Poor fella, I wouldn't wish it on anyone what happened to him.

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. Snags and fun galore By Brendan Rees Narre Warren North fire brigade threw its doors open to public ahead of the summer fire season. There was plenty for families to do during the open day held on Saturday 19 October. The day attracted more than a thousand people which included live demonstrations of vehicle rescue, a barbecue, tours of the station, educational handouts, and a chance to check out the brigade's ultra-light tanker. There were also fire uniforms and helmets for children to wear, and a chance to sit in the driver's seat of a fire truck. The brigade's communications officer Aaron Tams said the open day helped build community relationships and awareness of what the fire brigade did. "The brigades and other services put on several demonstrations such as gas flare-off, casualty removal, thermal imaging in smoke filled structures, hazmat awareness and draughting water from static supplies," he said. "We really enjoy being able to put on these events for the community. After all we are there for them," he said. "The kids and the 'big kids' really enjoyed the different activities available to them like the Little Pat fire truck and getting to wear their own structure gear, using the brand new ultralight tanker to put out simulation spot fires." The brigade thanked Narre Warren SES, Victoria Police, Hallam fire brigade, Upwey fire brigade, Officer fire brigade, Rapid Relief Team, Kennards Hire Narre Warren, Narre Warren Baptist Church, Ambulance Victoria, Rob's Amusements and all brigade members for making the day possible.

Casey Cityâ€™s Hi-tech bollards aim to reduce roadkill By Brendan Rees Hi-tech 'virtual fencing' will be deployed in a bid stop the amount of kangaroos being killed along a stretch of road in Lysterfield South. Casey Council will install about 40 electronic bollards on both sides of Churchill Park Drive west of Parkside Boulevard towards the Churchill Park Golf Club boundary. The bollards are activated at night by approaching vehicles and emit a flashing light and sound to repel wildlife from approaching the road while the vehicle is in the area - effectively creating a virtual fence. City of Casey will be the first Victorian council to adopt the new technology and mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was happy to support an innovative solution that improved road safety and protected local wildlife. "Council has responded to ongoing resident concerns in this part of Lysterfield South where we know there are far too many collisions between vehicles and local wildlife and we hope this technology will help to improve driver behaviour and protect animals," she said. The vehicle-activated warning signs are designed to alert motorists that it is a high-risk zone for kangaroos and encourage drivers to slow down, especially during the hours between dusk and dawn when most collisions with wildlife occur. 12-year-old Shannon Tobin-Underwood of Lysterfield South started a petition in March to protect kangaroos from becoming roadkill on Churchill Park Drive. Her dad, Paul Underwood, put forward a submission to council on behalf of a community lobby group called 'Save the Roos' for possible improvements including the virtual fence. "I am so proud that my petition of 111 signatures has resulted in such positive results," Shannon said. "Although the reduction of the speed limit was the goal of my petition, I believe the virtual fence and large flashing warning signs are a major win." "I would like to thank Cr Crestani for really listening and supporting the Lysterfield South community," she added. The bollard technology, created by Wildlife Safety Solutions, has been successfully used across Tasmania and in Victoria by VicRoads on a section of Wellington Road in Lysterfield. The early indications are call-outs to injured wildlife on Wellington Road have reduced significantly since the bollards were installed earlier this year. Council has also been successful in receiving funds under the Federal Government's Black Spot Program for six solar-powered flashing signs that will be installed on Churchill Park Drive between Police Road and the golf course, and a nearby section of Power Road.

Ladies’ crafty showcase By Brendan Rees Artists of the Country Women's Association Inc. West Gippsland Group showcased their creativity at their recent Creative Arts Expo in Cranbourne.Cranbourne Public Hall was filled with inspiring works from photography to embroidery, patchwork, craft, canvas work, confectionery, cut flowers and more on 18-19 October. Nearly a thousand exhibits showcasing and celebrating the artistic works of members. There were also live demonstrations including a bobbin lace making workshop, spinning yarn for pets, and a gold-work embroidery workshop.

Pop-up shops were Sewing Connection of Pakenham, and Andrea Roberts' Handmade Cards. West Gippsland Group President Ann Laws said the annual show was a great success. "Members enjoyed chatting with visitors over a cuppa and finding out their interests. We hope that by seeing our many varied crafts it will encourage them to try something new," she said. Other exhibits featured on the day included knitting, crochet, needlework, beading, artwork, card making, jams and preserves, baked goods, floral arrangements, as well as children and family member sections.

Anti-domestic violence activist and campaigner Tarang Chawla has been named the Young Community Achiever of the Year at the India Australia Business and Community Awards. Mr Chawla received the award for his work on gender equality and the prevention of violence at a ceremony in Brisbane on Friday 11 October. The category was hotly contested with 12 finalists for the award, and Mr Chawla said it was an honour to be nominated and humbling to be considered in the same category as the other finalists. Mr Chawla is the founder of Not One More Niki, a campaign to end menâ€™s violence. He also advocates for the rights of victims, survivors and their families. Mr Chawla began actively campaigning against domestic violence following his sister Nikitaâ€™s murder at the hands of her ex-partner in 2015, aged just 23. The siblings spent some of their childhood in Hampton Park and Mr Chawla said he has fond memories of the area. â€œWe know that sadly this region also has some of the highest instances of violence,â€? he said. â€œHowever, the community remains actively committed to addressing the issue.â€? Initially, Mr Chawla began campaigning as a way of coping with his own grief and sparing others from the same fate he, his family and Nikita suffered. He said his work builds on that of generations and women and men before him who have campaigned for equality. Jordy is making a serious difference By Nick Creely Jordan Wyatt is doing everything he can to make a difference. One run at a time. And not just to help his side win games of cricket on the weekends, but more importantly, to help overcome the stigma related to mental health. The Casey-South Melbourne batsman is donating $1 per run he scores this Victorian Premier Cricket season to Mindfull Aus, an organisation founded by Matt Runnalls aimed at encouraging those to come out of the shadows of stigma through self-acceptance and a greater education of mental health issues. For Wyatt, it's all about creating awareness of mental health issues, and encouraging those suffering to speak up, and not suffer in silence. But on a personal level, the cause and everything it stands for and aims to achieve is dear to his heart after suffering from mental health issues, particularly anxiety in his teenage years. "I've previously had issues with mental health, and I know how hard it is to speak up, but once you do, it does get a lot easier, and I want to promote that positivity around it, and try and get rid of that negative stigma surrounding mental health issues," he said. "So I'm looking for it as an opportunity to create a bit of awareness again. "That's why $1 per run is going straight to Mindfull and the work they do with especially young men, and not just the 18 to 40 bracket, it's even younger now which is concerning." Wyatt said that the first step to overcoming any debilitating mental health issue is being honest with yourself, and taking that plunge into self-acceptance and starting a conversation with someone that is close, and can be trusted. He firmly believes that it's helped him get on top of his issues in the past, and managing it further into the future. "The biggest battle that anyone with mental health issues faces is owning up to it, and admitting there is even an issue there," he said. "The thing is, once you do address it, get help and have people on your side and in your corner, they're able to support you through it. "If you're suffering in silence, people around you might not know you're struggling, and therefore might not be able to assist you. "It's hard; it's a really challenging thing to be able to speak up. You get quite emotional thinking about it." Wyatt said that the work Runnalls is doing with Mindfull Aus has inspired him to make a difference and encourage people to access the incredible mental health services available, and to do what he can to ensure people understand that it's okay to not be okay. "I'm friends with Matt Runnalls, the founder of Mindfull, and I've known him for quite a long time, and knowing him on a personal level is really important I think," he said. "When I was at school, there definitely wasn't as much accessibility to councillors

I definitely think it's (removing the stigma) come a long way, and on the improve. "In my case, I want to be seen as a bit of a role model for young guys coming through the ranks, to be there for those that are struggling and need to talk to someone, and if they can see I'm raising awareness and funds for this organisation and this company, that they might see that and go 'alright, there's someone I have common interest with or whatever, and I can speak to that person'. "I feel as though that can hopefully help people speak up about the issues they're facing, because I know that is 100 per cent the hardest thing to do. "I've had a lot of people around school, and my cricket club band together and support the cause - people have been nothing but supportive to me. "People do understand how much of a difficult time it is for young people that are going through these issues, and that stigma is slowly dying." Wyatt will be hoping that runs are pinging off his Redback blade across the course of the

season, with the Swans star sporting a Mindfull Aus sticker on the back of his bat, all with the hope that people simply ask questions and want to know how they can get involved. But more importantly, Wyatt is hoping that the cause can make people are seriously look after their mental wellbeing in order to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life. "It would have been nice to start the season a little bit better, but that's fine, I'll aim to improve in the coming weeks and hopefully I can raise a few funds myself," he said. "It's also really nice for other people to chip in along the way - it's obviously great to play cricket, and I love the game, but for me personally, to be able to contribute on another level when it comes to donating some money that might not have been accessible if someone like me wasn't raising awareness is great. Doves gear up to launch By Nick Creely Doveton has by no means rested on its laurels ahead of a massive 2020 season. The reigning AFL Outer East Division 1 premier - stepping up to the Premier Division grade alongside Pakenham - has no intention of merely make up the numbers, with the Doves going on a major recruiting drive as they continue to bolster their list and prepare for another step up. Coming across from Rowville, 24-year-old key position forward Mark Seedsman, experienced premiership defender Troy Allen, and attacking defender Luke Hadaway have all signed on the dotted line at AJ Robinson Reserve, boosting the running and key position stocks significantly. The Doves have also brought two former players back into the fold, with midfield jet Jarrod Smith - a former Dandenong Stingray star - returning after a stint with St Kilda City, while inside midfielder Charlie O'Neill also returns after playing two seasons at Highett in the Southern league. Former Oakleigh Charger and Port Melbourne VFL player Austin Deneys - who most recently played in the powerful Eastern Football League for Forest Hill - has also signed for the club. The midfielder is a huge addition to the Doves. Michael Best - a star for Inverleigh in the Geelong District Football League - will also be a Dove in 2020, with the 2019 Team of the Year member another huge addition. Adding to a strong group of new recruits, the Doves have essentially retained their entire premiership list, with director of football Martin Stillman telling Star News that retention was the main focus for the club moving forward. "Predominantly, the entire list was resigned around Round 10, so we've only got two players retired in Matthew Boyd and Jake Nicholson, outside of that we've retained the entire list which is massive retention so that was my first priority," he said. With an influx of quality recruits, Stillman said it was important that the Doves stay ahead of the game as the club moves up to the top division of AFL Outer East, with competition for spots in Round 1 next year already looking fierce. "Moving into Premier Division it was imperative that we identified a few areas that we believed we could improve on and be competitive in 2020," he said. "When you do have success, and ultimately win a premiership you do attract players to your club, so not only have we looked at good players, we've looked at good characters to improve the club off the field. "I looked at all the facets of our game, and we wanted to improve our attack in the forward 50, our midfield numbers and our halfback line. "We've been able to add some additions to our talls and smalls in the forward line, and some outside run in the midfield area, and some more run and carry in defence. "With the salary cap and the points system, you really need to look at players in the mid to low 20s, but having said that, if you lose a player of Boyd's ilk you still need to have some experience on the field, and Troy Allen will be a terrific acquisition with his experience." With the Doves gearing up for whatever 2020 may bring, Stillman said that there was also a major focus on youth and bringing the next wave of footballers through the doors of the club. "We're almost done (putting the list together)," he said. The softball season is taking shape

A new era begins "Welcome home, floorballers!" This was the sign greeting the 200-odd floorball players and supporters who, for the first time, stepped through the Officer Community Hub doors last week. The sport that has been played out of Cardinia Life for over 20 years relocated to Officer during last month's off-season. Decked out in green, gold and purple streamers and banners, the Hub wasted no time welcoming the floorball community to its facility. The facility was initially built with floorball in mind. While the rubber surface is not ideal for sports like basketball, it's perfect for floorball and resembles a surface similar to those used in the professional floorball leagues in Europe. With additional storage facilities, trophy cabinets and the ability to run fundraisers, the move to the Officer venue has been hailed as a tremendous success. Already two rounds in, it appears to have paid off with more floorball teams than ever before entering the Division 1 and Division 2 categories. Pakenham Floorball president Gavin Staindl said he is excited to see what comes of the move. "It allows us to grow so much more than where we were before," he said. "We're able to field more teams and play over multiple courts for the whole Thursday night. "We're eager to see what the future holds for us." Staindl said the club is still looking for new players. Round 3 of the Casey Softball Association was played on a particularly cool and showery day. Softball, unlike some other sports, will play in most conditions. Other than heavy rain, or extreme heat, games will go ahead. First up was the Mixed Under-15 competition. Berwick beat Doveton in a nailbiter 1211, and Cobras Grey played Cobras Maroon with Cobras Grey victorious 16-8. The Mixed Under-13s saw the newcomers to the competition, Royal Falcons, go down to Cobras 7-1, and Berwick and Doveton played out a thrilling 7-7 draw. The Social Ladies start at 12.30, with the Cranbourne Comets defeating Berwick Chickasaw 11-9 in a close one; Berwick Geronimo proving too strong for the Chiefs, winning 181; MVP defeating Cobras 13-8; and Narre Warren Penguins defeating Doveton 15-7. In the Open Women's 2 there were two games played with Doveton beating Berwick Cheyenne, and Casey Combined defeating Cobras 13-7. Sadly the weather had the final say with both Open Women's 1 and the Men's games washed out. For anyone who would like to come along and have a look at softball, there are games all day Saturday at Sweeney Reserve off Golf Links Road in Berwick. There's a great canteen for those who fancy a bite to eat while watching the game.
