Gumbuya World, Victoria’s newest large scale tourism attraction, has put Cardinia Shire on the domestic and international tourist map since it opened in 2017.

Gumbuya World boasts a state-of-theart Wildlife Trail allowing visitors to experince more than 50 species of Australian wildlife. Oasis Springs has 12 thrilling water experiences and Outback Explorer offers 11 exciting rides for all ages.

“Whether it’s spending endless hours in the water park, getting up-close and personal with wildlife, enjoying the rides and attractions or attending one of our many events, Gumbuya World has something for everyone,“ said CEO Ron Weinzierl.

This year Gumbuya has undergone a major expansion as stage two takes shape.

As part of stage two Oasis Springs, the theme park’s water world, will almost double in size. In addition to the new family wave pool, visitors will enjoy six brand new gigantic waterslides comprising two monster twister slides and thrilling four-lane rally race slides.

The expansion is part of a major redevelopment of Gumbuya World set to continue over the next three years.

When completed the theme park will offer 50 attractions as well as a range of onsite accommodation, new cafes, shops, a chocolate factory and a microbrewery. It will also include Indigenous, dinosaur and woolshed precincts for educational programs.

By 2022, it is anticipated that Gumbuya World will attract a million visitors each year from around Australia and the globe – ensuring tourism remains strong

in Victoria and the Casey Cardinia Region.

A CUT ABOVE THE COMPETITION New York Barbers is a slice of the Big Apple in the heart of Berwick.

The business was established in 2014 by owner Mario Fallace to provide a quality men’s grooming service in the South East suburbs and Casey region.

The state-of-the-art barber shop was inspired by the traditional, old school New York barber shops and the famous city itself.

Under Mario’s watchful eye, the team of barbers service all gentleman providing haircuts, beard trims and shaves.

Mario’s love for the Big Apple is evident in the carefully curated space which includes arresting photographs of iconic New York landscapes.

One corner of the barbers is devoted

to the history of the craft with framed antique cut throat razors and a centuryold barber’s chair.

Mario describes New York Barbers as an “old school barber shop with a modern fusion".

“When I decided originally to open a barbers it would have been very easy to paint a white wall and put in chairs and mirrors and call it a barbers shop,“ explained Mario.

“But I got to thinking about barbering and how big it was in the 1920s through to the 1960s in New York. At that time there was a barber on every corner.

That’s why I wanted to have a New York inspired feel and hence why we became the New York Barbers."

Customers and those waiting with

them can also indulge in a coffee, frappe, milkshake, cup of tea, soft drink or hot chocolate from the cafe.

Mario says his team of barbers are like family.

“The team is awesome. They are well experienced in all aspects of barbering from close shaves, to modern fades. It’s about looking after men.

“I am really proud of my team because that is exactly what they do. You can sit any chair in New York Barbers and know you will get the same quality service."

The judge described New York Barbers as “an amazing business“.

“The quality of your marketing, customer experience and innovation is

The business commenced operations in November 1984 with the aim of providing Supported Employment Opportunities for people with special needs, in particular intellectually disabled adults.

Waverley Industries employs 350 plus adults with special needs and 60 plus full time and casual staff across 2 sites in Notting Hill and Hallam.

The business has six specialty divisions – packaging, assembly, catering, wood work, transport and garden / maintenance services. The Packaging and Assembly Division specialises in packaging, collating, labelling, mail-outs, shrink-wrapping and assembly work ranging from small component sub-assembly to complete product assembly. The Catering Division specialises in providing customers with food and beverage catering at a competitive price, delivered to the door. The Transport Division provides a pickup and delivery service for customers. The first thing many tell of you of Roz Blades AM is her legendary tireless work for the community.

To the shock of many, Ms Blades suddenly resigned after a stellar 32 years as a Springvale and Greater Dandenong councillor on 10 October.

And the tributes have rarely been more glowing from community leaders, colleagues and politicians - many who spoke of how inspired they were by her example.

Greater Dandenong living treasure Merle Mitchell referred to her contribution as being matched by few in the area's history.

Perhaps just as rarely, she is also a "person who doesn't have an agenda", says Noble ParkKeysborough Rotary Club's Keith Maxwell.

"Most people in public life have an agenda behind the scenes but that wasn't Roz. "She was there for the community."

Aside from her council service, Ms Blades is a Paul Harris Fellow for her voluntary work as community service director at Noble Park Rotary Club.

She is also a life member of charity Springvale Benevolent Society and a part of countless groups, schools, sports clubs and committees.

Her service on the council is known for her tireless advocacy on social housing, public transport, asylum seekers stripped of income and multiculturalism.

But she was also known for taking up the cause for any resident, no matter who they were, councillor Zaynoun Melham said.

In 2013, Ms Blades was duly awarded with the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) - an award "thoroughly deserved", councillor Matthew Kirwan said.

Most councillors when receiving such honours receive the lower-ranking OAM. "But no one questioned why she got an AM rather than an OAM," Cr Kirwan said.

"That's because people knew how outstanding a councillor that she had been."

Crs loosen ‘gag’ on question time

A 17-year-old girl has been glassed by a male after rejecting his advances while out in Springvale.

The Pakenham teen had left a shisha bar with three female friends on Springvale Road about 2am on Sunday 13 October.

A black Toyota sedan pulled up near them, close to the Lascelles Street intersection.

A male got out and began speaking to the group, pestering them for their phone numbers.

When the victim told the male to leave, she was struck with a glass bottle to her forehead.

The wound resulted in a deep laceration and swelling that required stitches.

The male fled the scene on foot.

He was described as Sudanese appearance, aged in his mid 20s, about 190 centimetres with small dreadlocks and a large gap between his front teeth.

He was wearing a black hooded top and grey jeans.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council has reached a “compromise” solution that limits each councillor’s question time to 15 minutes at formal meetings.

The middle ground was found at a 14 October meeting between proponents of an eightminute limit and those wanting to retain an unlimited duration.

Councillor Matthew Kirwan, who was regarded as the target for the time limit, said the “mitigation” was a “great victory for peoplepower defending local democracy”.

About 47 residents wrote objections - as well as many of them making impassioned verbal submissions.

“It is still a sorry reduction in the ability of councillors to scrutinise the council administration and raise important issues in public essential for openness and transparency - but at least it is an improvement.”

The need for a time limit was a “non-existent problem”, Cr Kirwan said.

“With all the questions I have asked at council meetings over the past seven years we still have council meetings that usually finish between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.”

Cr Kirwan said meeting time was wasted on councillors’ reports in which they read aloud all the events they’d recently attended.

“It’s worthwhile being in the (meeting) minutes but not to take up councillor meeting time.

“From now on I’m not going to read out all of the activities - I’ll pick out what I think are the most important things and table the rest.”

He also successfully moved for Greater Dandenong Council to allow verbal public question time.

“I have been fighting for that for years and finally it has happened.”

Public question time will also be heard earlier in meetings.

Cr Maria Sampey, in support of Cr Kirwan, said the time limit was a “gag” on councillors asking questions on behalf of residents.

Cr Jim Memeti, in opposition, said an eightminute limit was “way way not enough” but 15 minutes was enough opportunity to ask questions.

It set a limit of roughly three hours for the councillor question time in total, he said.

“It brings a bit of formality. We are not try-

ing to gag anybody.”

Cr Sean O’Reilly said the change was about imposing a “reasonable limit” on questions in the public realm.

Councillors could still ask unlimited questions by email or later face-to-face with council directors, he said.

“Where’s the gag? There’s no gag there.

There’s no duct tape.

“I don’t make decisions based on 50 (submitters). I make decisions based on over 100,000 residents who want us to get on with the job.”

Cr Tim Dark, who recently opposed the time limit, said there needed to be a “sensible centre”.

“There definitely needs to be a time (limit).

What that time is has to be determined by the council.”

Friendships form across our continent

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Students and staff from a Far North Queensland school have visited Noble Park Primary School as part of a close and fruitful exchange over the past three years.

The latest visitors from Yarrabah State School sat in on classes, worked on a common painting and shared a barbecue lunch as part of their three days of mutual learning.

Since 2016, Noble Park students and teachers have also taken trips to the all-indigenous 'sister' school.

At the most recent excursion, students experienced a Queensland-style class with unique insight into bush tucker, bush medicine and fire-making technologies.

"It's not a closed community but you have to have a reason for going there," says Noble

Park Primary principal David Rothstadt.

Most important has been the human friendships - a "two-way" learning.

As part of the rising enthusiasm, about 20 Noble Park students applied for the most recent tour of Yarrabah.

"For our kids and staff, to meet with First Peoples has been a real eye-opener for them.

"There's wonderful intrinsic rewards like seeing the kids making these genuine relationships.

"That relationship and personal contact means seeing people as they are, with the same hopes and aspirations."

The exchange has been partly funded by Noble Park-Keysborough Rotary Club. Rotarians also hosted a barbecue for the two schools in Noble Park on 16 October.

Police have disrupted a planned fight between more than 100 rival gang members at Burden Park Springvale.

The two groups each of more than 50 people descended on the park about 5.30pm on Friday 11 October.

One group was predominantly of Asian backgrounds, the other Islander, police say.

Some of the members pushed and shoved but no brawl occurred.

The groups dispersed when police arrived.

Police believe the brawl was organised over a dispute about a female.

Fast food approved A convenience restaurant at 247 Princes Highway Dandenong has been granted permit approval.

On 14 October, Greater Dandenong councillors approved the proposal for up to 42 patrons from 10am-midnight seven days a week.

The plan attracted six written objections.

A council report stated the restaurant would impact on on-street parking for just short periods during lunch and dinner.

Littering was expected to be minimal due to the absence of outdoor seating and takeaway food, the report stated.

Cop injured during arrest A police officer was injured after rousing an unconscious male slumped in a vehicle in Abbotts Road Dandenong South.

The 27-year-old Cranbourne man was holding a knife when approached by police about 1.10pm on 11 October.

As officers tried to remove the knife, he allegedly began to violently resist.

Police member received minor injuries in the struggle.

The man was arrested under the Mental Health Act and conveyed to hospital for assessment.

Care for Bear, just in time

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Vets and nurses at Australian Animal Protection Society have saved the life of a critically injured puppy abandoned in a cardboard box.

The six-week-old Rottweiler dubbed 'Bear' had suffered "gruesome injuries" when he was found by a passer-by next to a park in Hampton Park on 9 October.

"The Good Samaritan noticed the puppy in the box on the side of the road on her way to work around 8am that morning, and on her way home at 1:30pm it was still there," an AAPS spokesperson Charlie Keele said.

When taken to the Dandenong Southbased AAPS, Bear was "clinging to life". He was rushed into surgery.

"Unfortunately, Bear's injuries were quite gruesome," Ms Keele said.

"He had a laceration on his face and a significant injury to his genital region.

"His vitals were deteriorating."

After six hours of surgery, Bear was showing "significant signs of progress". One of the AAPS vet nurses took him home in an incubator.

For 48 hours, the nurse only had two hours sleep as she tended to Bear.

Bear is the third dumped dog received by AAPS in the past two weeks.

"It's a worrying trend," Ms Keele said.

"Despite our pleas for people to never leave their animals in dangerous situations if they can no longer care for them, it still happens."

"We strongly advise against giving away animals to unknown persons or leaving your animal somewhere to fend for itself."

The AAPS has launched a Care For Bear donation page to help pay for his medical costs and care.

Truckie’s fatal mistakes

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Pakenham truck driver has been jailed by the County Court of Victoria for culpable driving that killed a 19-year-old university student in Dandenong.

Kerasoma Fetalaiga, 34, pleaded guilty to the "grossly negligent" driving in which his work's UD tray-truck struck Vishal Mahant on the side of Frankston-Dandenong Road about 5.38pm on 7 April 2017.

At the time, Fetalaiga was speeding in the Faster Plaster company truck at about 83 km/h in the 60 zone, and had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.076.

It was illegal for him to drive the heavy vehicle with a reading above zero.

Fetalaiga, who had no prior convictions, had been tailgating a Coles semi-trailer as he attempted to overtake.

As he passed south through the Kirkham Road intersection, he veered from the centre lane to the left.

His truck was so close to the semi-trailer, he wouldn't have had a clear view of what was ahead in the left lane, Judge Michael O'Connell noted during sentencing on 16 October.

Mr Mahant was standing next to his Toyota Camry, legally parked in the left lane.

He was about to get in the driver's seat when he and his car were struck by the left side of Fetalaiga's braking truck.

Mr Mahant was thrown 29 metres down the road, the Camry lifted and spun onto the nature strip and coming to rest against a power pole.

The victim died at the scene from his injuries.

Police found five empty cans of mixed bourbon and coke, and six unopened cans in-

side the truck cabin.

Judge O'Connell said that Fetalaiga's speed, drink-driving and failing to keep proper lookout added up to "gross negligence" - though at the "lower end" of culpable driving.

"I've formed the view that alcohol contributed to your offending but it was not a determinative or predominant factor in causing the collision," Judge O'Connell said.

Fetalaiga later said he had stopped off at Dan Murphy's on the way home due to having a "difficult day" with an inexperienced jockey.

On that fateful afternoon, he'd taken Frankston-Dandenong Road as a detour home to avoid the traffic-jammed Monash Freeway, he said.

Fetalaiga had moved from New Zealand with his wife and four children in 2015. Born into a poor upbringing, he sought a better life for his family.

Glowing references were written by his church pastor, Pakenham Eels Rugby Club

and his family.

Judge O'Connell noted Fetalaiga's remorse and insight, 30 months of legal delays and "excellent" work history.

Since the crash, he'd been diagnosed with PTSD, adjustment disorder and "extreme range" depression.

Fetalaiga faced likely deportation after serving his sentence.

In victim impact statements, Mr Mahant's bereaved parents told of their son leaving India to study in Australia. His dream was to be a successful businessperson.

His death left a "big gape in my heart that can't be filled by anyone else", his father wrote.

"His absence has left me with profound grief.

"I miss him with each passing day and I hope wherever he is he is happy."

Fetalaiga was jailed for up to six years with a three-year, three-month non-parole period.

He was disqualified from driving for two years.

Cranbourne line commuters feel train pain

By Brendan Rees Just over one train, on average, was abruptly cancelled on the Cranbourne train line every day in September - which has been labelled one of the "worst on the entire rail network".

New figures, released by Public Transport Victoria on 10 October revealed Cranbourne's punctuality rate was 84.5 per cent - up 1.1 per cent from August.

The result was substantially short of Metro Trains' performance benchmark of 92 per cent.

Overall, 41 trains were cancelled for the month on the Cranbourne line.

Public Transport Users Association spokes-

man Daniel Bowen said passengers continued to suffer from "late and crowded trains," on Cranbourne line which was "some of the worst on the entire rail network."

"This is in no small part thanks to the single track sections on the line, which play havoc with cascading delays and limit the number of services that can run. It's good to hear that the government is working on duplication - it has waited far too long, and can't come soon enough," he said.

Opposition Transport spokesman David Davis labelled the results as "an appalling rail fail on the Cranbourne line under Labor."

"In 2019, there have been 1567 cancelled,

short runs, bypasses and slips - so far," he said.

For the second consecutive month, Metro Trains will pay compensation to passengers for failing to deliver 90 per cent of its services on time - including eligible Cranbourne line commuters.

Following a number of challenging months, the Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne directed the Department to work closely with Metro to improve their performance.

"Metro needs to continue to work hard to improve its performance and we will continue to ensure they have the plans in place to do so," Mr Weimar said.

Under its previous contracts, Metro Trains

would not be required to pay compensation for September's level of performance. Passengers are advised to visit the Metro Trains website to claim compensation.

A Metro spokesperson said September saw improvements "to reliability and punctuality" on the Cranbourne line - "but we're still not delivering the level of service ourpassengers deserve."

"There were far too many disruptions during the month, including a significant number of trespasser and police incidents which delayed our passengers," the spokesperson said.

Metro said it was "workingharder than ever" to give passengers a more reliable service.

A large crowd gathered filling the church to witness the swearing in before Bishop Paul Barker. The new vicar is Rev. Graeme Peters who comes most recently from the Parish of Wonthaggi and Inverloch.

Social history of Holdens Historians at the University of Adelaide and Monash University are searching for former Holden employees to interview about their working experiences for an oral history project to be housed at the National Library of Australia.

Holden ceased manufacturing vehicles in Australia at the end of 2017, ending more than a century of automotive manufacture in this country.

The research team will delve into the memories of those who worked at Holden between 1945 and 2017, in an attempt to unearth the remarkable history of this company and its workers who, for many decades, were so successful in manufacturing vehicles.

His life for others

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said.

“It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me.

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre.

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Worker milks Coles cans

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A worker smuggled out scores of baby formula tins from a Coles supermarket to help fund his gambling addiction, a court has heard.

Aries Kim, 21, of Springvale, pleaded guilty to stealing $7500 worth of the milk powder from his Parkmore shopping centre workplace.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing back two vehicles that he'd previously sold.

The ruse was up in March when a store manager discovered open cartons for baby formula stashed in a back room area.

On four occasions in the next two weeks, Kim was surveilled smuggling out baby formula in two sports bags and taking them home.

During the spree, he arrived at work dressed in uniform even while he was not rostered to

steal the powder.

Police surveillance observed about 112 tins being loaded into a vehicle that attended Kim's home, as well as a number of people coming and going.

Police raided Kim's house on 26 March, seizing 43 tins of baby formula as well as the two sports bags in his bedroom.

An audit at the time found that 1766 tins of baby formula worth $36,567 had been stolen from Parkmore Coles, police told the court.

On average, Coles stores were reporting between 30 to 60 tins being stolen in the same period.

Kim also pleaded guilty to the theft of two BMWs - cars that he'd previously sold. One of the car owners had the BMW stolen from their

driveway after listing it for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

In the other case, Kim provided just one key for the BMW during a swapping of cars. He later stole the vehicle back in Chadstone shopping centre car park during a 'sale' organised online.

A defence lawyer said Kim's offending was fuelled by betting on the roulette tables at Crown Casino three times a week.

He laid down bets of thousands of dollars at a time and acquired a significant debt, his lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Kim's thieving was motivated by gambling and to improve his own assets but "it led to nothing".

Kim's moral culpability was higher because of the degree of forethought, planning and ma-

nipulation in his crimes, Mr Vandersteen said.

However, it was destined to unravel in the "fullness of time".

Courts needed to send a message to deter people from similar thefts from workplaces.

Such crimes were a "breach of trust", Mr Vandersteen said.

In mitigation, Kim was young, gave an early guilty plea, had no prior convictions and was cooperative with police.

Kim was placed on an 18-month supervised community corrections order with 250 hours of voluntary work as well as behavioural programs.

He was ordered to pay $7500 compensation to Coles, and disqualified from driving for six months.

Nominated for award, positive principal leads the way

But the Dandenong West Primary School principal herself says she doesn't stop learning.

Ms Hansen has been announced as one of three finalists in the outstanding primary school principal category of the Victorian Educational Excellence Awards 2019.

It's a crowning achievement for nearly a decade of inspiring an inclusive and outwardlooking school.

Research and her own experience shows that bringing communities into the school and working with them improves learning.

To that end, with Community Hubs Australia funding, the school brings in parents and families for classes in English language, craft,

Several years ago, the school took part in the aspiring It's Just A Postcode campaign.

"That message of belief is that it doesn't matter what postcode you're in, you can succeed."

In time, the school's NAPLAN results whilst that is not all that matters - has significantly improved, Ms Hansen says.

Ms Hansen aims to empower students to "lead their own learning". The art is for teachers to listen, rather than just talk and tell, she says.

She instills the school with a culture of celebrating positive achievements. Embedded are values like passion for learning, honesty, empathy, respect and tolerance.

Ms Hansen said the school decided to rethink its approach with a third of the school's children from refugee backgrounds.

The school linked with Foundation House, which works with refugee survivors of torture and trauma.

Counselling was available to students and parents, while professional training was offered to staff.

Under a Berry Street educational model, staff use language and practices from a "trauma informed" background.

Teachers adopted a 'restorative' approach

- to repair harm rather than simply punish students.

Ms Hansen always loved being a classroom teacher. But as a principal, there was a chance to "impact so many more students and so many more families".

"I've made many good decisions, I've made many not so good decisions.

"But I'm learning along the way."

In congratulating Ms Hansen for her award shortlisting, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said teachers, principals and education professionals did a "crucial job" in Dandenong.

"It's great to see the acknowledgement of Bev Hansen for her outstanding contribution at Dandenong West Primary School."

The Victorian Educational Excellence Awards winners are announced on Friday 25 October.

Driver jailed over fatality

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A delivery van driver for a Hallam food supply company has been jailed after fatally crashing into a cyclist in country Victoria.

Timothy Joel Scott, now 34, was on his way home from a delivery run for Gippy Gourmet when his van drove straight into the back of James Freeman's bicycle on Yarrawonga-Benalla Road about 4.20pm on 24 March 2017.

Mr Freeman, a husband and father, had been riding 500 millimetres inside of the white line when his cycling companion in front of him heard an "almighty bang", the County Court of Victoria heard.

As a result of the crash, Mr Freeman was

thrown 35 metres, landing face up on the side of the road.

Despite the efforts of his mate and others, Mr Freeman died at the scene.

Mr Scott initially told police that he'd lost control of his truck as he veered to overtake the two cyclists in convoy.

During his over-correction, he crashed into the rear bike, he said.

But after contradictory forensic evidence, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.

Mr Scott had set off from the Gippy Gourmet factory in Hallam about 6am that day.

He then delivered food supplies through northern Victoria and southern NSW and was

on his way home to Delacombe, Ballarat.

There was no evidence of speeding - Scott was driving at a minimum 84 km/h in a 100 zone, Judge Clare Quin noted during sentencing on 10 October.

Nor was there suggestion of drugs, alcohol, use of a mobile phone or any mechanical fault with the van.

Judge Quin noted Scott had remained at the crash scene and attempted to help his victim.

In mitigation, he'd pleaded guilty early, shown remorse and had good rehabilitation prospects, she said.

She dismissed a defence argument that the crash was caused by Scott's "momentary inattention".

The driver should have been able to see the cyclists between 100 to 400 metres away on the straight section of road, she said.

"The dangerousness was your failing to take due care and attention when it was required.

"These accidents are all too frequent due to the inattention of drivers."

Judge Quin rejected a defence submission for Scott to be sentenced solely to a community corrections order.

"As a result of your inattention, a man has lost his life through no fault of his own."

Scott was jailed for four months, followed by a two year CCO with 75 hours community work.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

It's pawns at 10 paces on Lonsdale Street each week, where young and old convene for the weekly Dandenong Chess Club meets.

First established back in 1973 at a time when the Cold War occupied everyone's thoughts, the Dandenong Chess Club was formed the year after the US won the world chess championship, snatching the title from the Russians.

The group reached its peak in the 1990s with roughly 90 members in 1999.

It went through a bit of a rough patch, drastically losing members, before management improved things again.

Now, the multicultural, all ages and all abilities club has over 30 members who meet each Wednesday at the Albion Hotel, as well as irregular visitors who drop in for a challenging match every now and again.

They even have a sponsor now in Melvic Real Estate, which provides funding for each

tournament.

Paul Huver, a long-time member of the club, says the diversity of people attending is a testament to the game's ability to bridge cultural and age divides.

"What we notice is how multicultural it is, 95 percent of our members are from the multicultural community," he explains.

"People feel friendly. We're like a social club and we play chess: Serbs playing Croats, Indians playing Pakistanis.

"In a chess club it's all forgotten and the war is on the chess board."

He says chess can be beneficial to young people, instilling in them a sense of fairness and encouraging them to consider the consequences of their moves and actions. For older people, chess can keep the mind active and healthy, he says.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Wiliams said Ms Blades, who resigned from her 32-year stint as councillor on 14 October, was a "friend and mentor for many years".

"I will miss working with her in an official capacity.

"But, I have absolutely no doubt that Roz will continue to be an active member of the Dandenong community.

"Roz has served the Greater Dandenong community for more than thirty years with unwavering dedication to improving the lives of those who need it most."

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula also paid tribute to Ms Blades' "outstanding and lasting contribution" as a councillor and "dedicated and passionate advocate for our community for more than 30 years".

Roz Blades often referred to Greater Dandenong's Interfaith Network as "a rock on which this City stands", says its development officer Helen Heath.

The interfaith network is Australia's oldest dating back to the City of Springvale in 1993.

Ms Blades was always a supporter and advocate for the IFN, leading tours to places of worship across the municipality, Ms Heath said.

"Roz, as both mayor and councillor and as the special person she is, has always advocated for the importance of the work that the IFN does and for what the IFN stands for.

"Roz has always been a fervent and committed believer in interfaith, representing the Jewish Faith in offering meditations at the IFN monthly meetings and prayers at Council meetings."

Ms Heath said it hoped Ms Blades, who sud-

denly resigned from council due to ill health, would continue to be "the great supporter she has always been for the IFN".

"The IFN holds Roz in its prayers, meditations and thoughts and deeply thanks Roz for all her valuable hard work and service offered to the IFN over a long period."

‘Few have matched Roz’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Springvale community trailblazer Merle Mitchell had one person in mind if she wanted to tackle a council issue.

That person is Roz Blades - who first met Ms Mitchell when elected on Springvale Council in 1987.

Ms Blades served with Ms Mitchell's late husband Eric, a former Springvale mayor. And has continued to serve for 32 years until her sudden resignation on 14 October.

"I think her contribution has been extraordinary," Ms Mitchell, herself a Greater Dandenong Living Treasure and active social campaigner on projects like the Springvale Enterprise Hostel.

"I think there are few who have made the sort of contribution that Roz has made in the history of the whole area.

"She will be really really missed from council but I know the gratitude that so many people in the community feel.

"I hope they will support her in whatever direction the future holds for her."

Ms Mitchell said she admired Ms Blades for "always putting the community first".

"I think that she's had to make several sacrifices.

"Roz has always thought about the community and what the community needs.

"Her door has always been open for the community to talk to her about what concerns them.

Charity pays tribute: Roz ‘lived for the community’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Roz Blades' selfless approach has inspired others, including Friends of Refugees chief executive Sri Samy.

Ms Samy heads a Springvale-based charity that provides material support and training for asylum seekers. She says she's always looked up to Ms Blades' example.

"Very early on in our friendship I had made up my mind to be like Roz someday, always thinking of others and working very hard to help them," Ms Samy said.

"Like me I am sure there are a number people in our community who look up to to Roz and thank her for the outstanding work she has done and for her commitment to help the under privileged people in our community."

From the start, Ms Blades was at the forefront of the City of Greater Dandenong's nation-leading stand on behalf of asylum seekers and refugees living in the community.

In 2014, the council launched its action plan to help support asylum seekers - estimated to be about 2000 in Greater Dandenong.

It flourished to become a Back Your Neighbour campaign signed by more than 20 councils in NSW and Victoria, and the creation of a multi-council Mayoral Taskforce led by Greater Dandenong on the issue.

As mayor, Ms Blades has strongly called for the Federal Government to resume its meagre SRSS income support for jobless asylum seekers - about $247 a week for a single adult.

She took the fight to Parliament House in Canberra.

Ms Blades, who migrated from the UK in the late 1960s, said she was concerned on not just the financial impacts of the welfare cuts but the health and wellbeing of its victims.

"Since World War II, Australia has welcomed more than 800,000 people who've fled war and persecution," she said in a statement in 2018.

"These people have contributed to our communities and our country on every level, from our culture to our sporting traditions, from medicine to the law, from science and research to our global reputation for excellence

"If I was wondering what was happening in Council or there was something urgently needing attention, she was the first person I would think to speak to."

Ms Mitchell has recently grabbed national acclaim for her impassioned submission to the Federal Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

Ms Blades was at the forefront to help with the settlement of new arrivals in Greater Dandenong, Ms Samy said.

"She was someone who already knew the needs of the most under privileged people in our community.

"She was always looking at ways to help people in need in every way she could."

When it comes to helping the disadvantaged, Roz Blades has been much lauded for walking the walk.

As a life member of the charity Springvale Benevolent Society, Ms Blades has volunteered for decades making home visits, delivering food and other essentials to the needy.

"She didn't blink," SBS president Joe Rechichi said.

"She was wired in a different way."

Ms Blades was a willing and hard-working ally on Greater Dandenong Council for charities like his.

She made sure the council knew how best to support agencies that helped on the ground.

"As a councillor she gave to the community 100 per cent. She's been a fantastic person for not just her ward but for the whole of Greater Dandenong.

"She dedicated her life in schools, in kindergartens - you name it. You go through the records of the Journal and she's been there in everything.

"People like Roz are few and far between.

She'll be greatly missed."

Only months ago, as mayor, Ms Blades highlighted a "crisis" among charities stretching by the growing numbers of homeless and struggling families in Greater Dandenong. Her rally call unleashed a flood of food donations and help from a kind-hearted community.

"The community at this point of time can't afford to lose Roz," Mr Rechichi said.

Mr Rechichi felt some relief that Ms Blades made the "tough decision" to resign. He said she needed to prioritise her failing health for she had many years of community contribution to give.

"Two weeks ago, I had a chat to Terry (Ms Blades' husband). I said to him Roz's health worries me.

"She's been going flat-chat for some time

Teresa Rechichi, Joe's wife, served with Ms Blades on the former City of Springvale Council in the 1990s.

"It's very disappointing news," Ms Rechichi said of Ms Blades' resignation.

"But her health has to come first.

"As far as the community goes, she'll be a great loss because she would reach out to people.

"She lived for the community itself."

Clever kids

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Kids are getting a fast start to the day at St Anthony's Primary School, Noble Park.

Each morning, students are getting their dose of exercise by walking laps of the school oval.

It's a novel response to the declining numbers of students walking to school and rising childhood obesity rates across the state.

Nearly 50 per cent of students travelled on foot in the 1970s. In 2011, that figure has dropped to 20 per cent.

At the same time, one in three children are expected to be obese or overweight in 2025.

This month, VicHealth is encouraging more primary school kids to walk, ride or scoot to

and from school as part of its Walk to School campaign.

City of Greater Dandenong is among 71 councils taking part.

VicHealth physical activity manager Melanie Chisholm praised St Anthony's Primary for its lateral approach.

"We love seeing all the ways schools get their students active, and walking around the oval every morning helps kids get the physical activity they need to be healthy and happy.

"We understand it can sometimes be challenging to walk to school so including activities like these into the routine is a great way schools can encourage healthy habits in their community."

Why is this important?

“When you file a claim under WorkCover and/or for a lump sum payment you are required to establish that your injury is work related."

"And in some claims, it must be established that your employment was a 'significant con-

tributing factor' to that injury.”

She explained that in order to establish the cause of your injury you need to have an accurate and consistent record of your injury, and it needs to have been taken shortly after it occurred.

What can I do?

Complete an incident form with your employer after your injury and/or attend your medical clinic and report the injury to your doctor.

Be consistent at all times. Keep a diary to assist you, if necessary.

Ensure all the facts are disclosed to your lawyers at the earliest opportunity. Hidden surprises can be detrimental to the case.

Master blaster aims high

By Nick Creely Star South African batsman David White may have only played a single season in Australia, but he's already become a feared name in the Dandenong District Cricket Association.

In bad news for bowlers, the reigning Turf 1 premiership captain-coach of Buckley Ridges is back after a highly-successful UK stint with Ashstead in the Surrey Championships' Premier Division, and with even more purpose to add to his extraordinary, record-breaking 2018/19 campaign.

In just 16 matches - including Twenty20s in the DDCA last season, White amassed 1252 runs at an average of 125.20, a season that included six centuries and three half-centuries from just 16 innings, completely taking the competition by storm.

White told the Journal that he felt an added responsibility joining the club last season, and felt like he put his best foot forward on a personal level to better the team.

"I didn't know what to expect to be honest, and in home conditions it helped, we have a good wicket and a smaller field, and I was batting well at the time, so all those things help," he said.

"It was fantastic - whenever you come to a new place, you really want to do well personally, especially if you're a leader and captain, and obviously with the (player) points situation, there was a lot of difficult decisions to make last year in terms of selection, so it was really important that there was no question marks over my own place in the team.

"It was great to score runs, and contributing in the semi-final and final was extremely satisfying."

But team success for White was the pinnacle, with the individual accolades just an added bonus.

After leading the Bucks to an incredible premiership against Springvale South last season, White - who belted his way to one of great hundreds in a grand final, cracking a memorable 178 - is back and raring to feast on bowlers once more, and he reflected on the special day last season for the cricket club, one that he will always hold dear to his heart.

"I was actually saying to the guys after the game, 'I've played so much cricket in my life that was dead cricket, and it only mattered for your own individual score and getting a contract', and it (the premiership) was honestly one of the highlights of my career," he said.

"It meant so much to a lot of people, it was a hell of a competitive game of cricket - looking back, it's one of the biggest highlights for sure."

And that sweet taste of premiership success - combined with an even-hungrier Buckley Ridges - spells danger for opposition sides.

White's Bucks opened their account with a comfortable win against St Mary's on the very ground they lifted the trophy up in March. The gun whacked 81 off 80 balls, himself.

"It was a nice way to start with a win - after the game we had a little bit of mixed feelings, we probably felt like we let them off the hook a little bit," he said.

"We had them really under pressure, and let them off the hook, but still happy to get the

(premiership) defense off with a win.

"We've got a couple of new guys coming in, and a couple of older guys that have lowered their points, so the club's in a strong position.

"We've got a West Indian, Jerome Jones, who played his first game and bowled really nicely - he's a good bloke, and looks like he'll add a lot to our bowling this year."

While White said that the club is proud of its achievements last season as the champion club of the DDCA, the Bucks want to go to the next level in 2019/20, and not take the foot off the pedal.

"I think whenever people and teams do well in sport it's a challenge to not dwell too much on the past, and I think it was fantastic (winning the premiership), and an amazing experience, but when teams lose its important to not get too low, and when you win its important to not get too high," he said.

"It's really important (in continuing to be successful), but in saying that, we celebrated accordingly, and it was a special few days, definitely."

The 28-year-old - with seven First Class centuries and two List A tons in South Africa next to his name before retiring last February - is set to further test himself this year as a guest player in the Victorian SuperSlam for Frankston Peninsula.

White said that the challenge of playing against some of Victoria's best cricketers could be the catalyst for him to potentially put his name up in lights for a return to professional cricket, whether that's in South Africa, or even in Australia.

"To be honest, I think for me, that market (Twenty20 cricket) is something that I did look into, it's an extremely difficult one to break into," he said.

"I'd be an overseas player in a competition like that (BBL), but you never know, if I can dominate that tournament, we'll see.

"From a personal point of view, there's a lot of changes in South African cricket, I'm in contact with a few of people over there and there's talks about the domestic system going back to 12 teams from six.

"So it (SuperSlam) will be a good test for me playing a higher standard in a game that goes a bit quicker and just getting a taste of it again, and just seeing where I'm at.

"I do understand how it does feed into state cricket, and people are pretty proud of the standard of cricket, and it's first grade.

"I'm very excited to give it a crack - the Twenty20 format has a bit of luck involved, you have to go out there and play, and things aren't directly in your control.

"Hopefully I can get away to some starts, and see how we go.

"So I think it's a nice balance - Buckley are looking after me outside of cricket and on Saturdays with games and then I can still play a game-by-game basis in the T20s.

"And if something does change in the South African system, and I feel like I want to potentially give it another two years, then we'll see how it goes." dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

A double blow for Dandy

By Tyler Lewis A disappointing weekend for the Dandenong Panthers has them chasing the Victorian Premier Cricket top eight heading into the red ball fixture this weekend.

In both of the weekend’s matches the Panthers began on top but were unable to break game-saving partnerships.

On Saturday against an in-form Northcote side, the Panthers were strong up front, with Ed Newman taking a sensational catch running in from the boundary to put the Dragons on the back foot.

But at 4/55, the Dragons compiled a strong partnership in the middle order through Max O’Sullivan (75) and Josh Sundberg (51) that proved to be game-defining.

After going for consecutive boundaries, James Nanopoulos rattled the stumps of O’Sullivan before the right-arm quick collected another three scalps to minimise the target.

The rain settled in moments prior and through the innings break to force a reduced match and adjusting the Panthers target to 185 from 40 overs.

Early wickets again had Dandenong in a similar situation to the week prior, but the Panthers were unable to create deja vu as the wickets continued to tumble.

Nanopoulos and Cameron Forsyth joined at the crease shortly before the rain set in once again and created a new match scenario.

Walking back out to the middle, the Panthers needed 99 from 11 overs, and with Nanopoulos at the crease, it was well within reach.

For the first few overs, the Panthers were on track, but once the wickets began to fall the runs started to dry up with victory streaming away from Dandenong’s grasp.

On the following morning at Casey Fields, Dandenong got off to another raring start with early wickets to Jakeb Thomas and Suraj Randiv.

Prestigious award for Keysborough tennis Earlier this month, the Keysborough Tennis Club was presented with the prestigious 'Top 50 Club' award for 2019 by Tennis Victoria.

Ranking 39th out of over 900 clubs in Victoria, the Keysborough Tennis Club is the first tennis club in the City of Greater Dandenong to receive a Top 50 Club award.

The award was presented by Ruth Holdaway, the CEO of Tennis Victoria. Representing Keysborough Tennis Club was Phillip Horsburgh (president), Ailsa Williams (secretary), Neil Cooper (treasurer), Lisa Fitzgerald (head coach) and Lilie Cooper (the club's systems expert).

The award is based on the number of players registered at the club - including casual Book-a-Court players - and recognises the significant contribution the Keysborough Tennis Club has made to the sport of tennis.

The Keysborough Tennis Club has grown significantly since 2015/2016 when it first introduced the Book-a-Court system with its membership base growing from 225 to 588 members

The Keysborough Tennis Club was recently awarded the 'Top 50 Club' award. and a casual player list of 330 non-members.

Keysborough Tennis Club was the first tennis club in the City of Greater Dandenong to introduce the online Book-a-Court system, which allows both members and casual players to book courts at the club both during the day and at night-time under lights by use of a code at the entry keypad.

Currently, the club is piloting the Clubspark program, one of 17 clubs being chosen throughout Australia by Tennis Australia. The program allows online bookings for special events and activities at the club as well as being able to pay for memberships online.
