Little day of big fun

By Danielle Kutchel There was fun for the whole family, but most of all the littlies, at Greater Dandenong’s Little Day Out. Held on Sunday 6 October, it was the headline event of the Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival 2019.

Activities included yoga for kids, rock climbing, free rides for kids and community group activities.

This year, the Children’s Festival celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with a space theme, including cooking classes where kids could bake galaxy cookies, movie nights featuring classics like ET, and even a space station make out of recycled products.

A Dandenong-based recycler - and contractor of Greater Dandenong Council - is under investigation for alleged wage theft from asylum seekers.

Polytrade Pty Ltd is being investigated by the Fair Work Ombudsman after allegations of unsafe worksites and wafe theft of about $1

million were raised by the Australian Workers Union (AWU), as recently reported in The Age. The company processes kerbside recycling for several councils, including Greater Dandenong which has made a nation-leading stance on behalf of asylum seekers.

Child-care block approved

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A proposed child care centre in Keysborough has been given the go-ahead despite traffic and amenity objections from Greater Dandenong Council.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on 8 October over-ruled the council's permit refusal for the 126-children two-storey facility on 32-36 Chapel Road.

Tribunal senior member Laurie Hewat had put his approval on hold, giving Transport Victoria a month to lodge any objections.

The transport department did not respond, Mr Hewat stated.

Greater Dandenong Council had argued the child care centre was an overdevelopment of the 1593 square-metre site.

Its 8.5 metre height, as well as bulk, would be a "dominant and obtrusive presence" in a predominantly single-storey dwelling neighbourhood, the council argued.

The council also submitted that traffic would increase unsustainably on surrounding streets.

"In broad terms the council regards the proposal as a development that is too large and intensive in this location and would not be compatible with the locality," Mr Hewat stated.

However Mr Hewat found the building's "visual presence" was acceptable, its highest point towards the centre of the block and below the nine-metre maximum.

The proposed facility also provided car parking above minimum requirements.

Expert evidence showed the street network would safely accommodate the increased traf-

fic, Mr Hewat stated.

"I am satisfied that the proposal will not have unacceptable traffic or related amenity impacts."

Mr Hewat noted that the council's officers had originally recommended a permit approval.

They were over-ruled by Greater Dandenong councillors.

The centre proposed by 36 Keys Pty Ltd is permitted to operate between 7am-7pm on Mondays-Fridays.

Noble Park’s ‘sub-standard’ space is now a beauty

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A bigger, more beautiful Noble Park Civic Space has emerged after the removal of a disused electrical sub-station.

The large brick sub-station’s removal was negotiated between Greater Dandenong Council and the Level Crossing Removal Authority as part of the Sky Rail project.

The venue now more resembles a park with an inviting lawn, seating and tables.

Mayor Roz Blades said the council was now searching for a new name for the reinvigorated space.

She said it complemented the off-leash dog park near Corrigan Road as well as other recreational space developed under the elevated rail.

“It’s turning into a nice village space for the locals.”

After a two month absence from chairing council meetings, Cr Blades intended to return on 14 October.

In September, Cr Blades sought a leave of absence from attending two council meetings

for personal reasons.

She stressed that she hadn’t been absent from the mayoral job in that period.

“I wasn’t to assure the community I’m still doing the job.

“I’ve been still working from home, still attending the events, still answering the phone calls and emails, talking to council officers, having meetings at my house ...

“I have not been on holiday.”

IN BRIEF Man charged over cop-car ramming

Tyre recycler fined A Dandenong South tyre-recycling factory has been convicted and fined $80,000 after a worker’s arm was mangled in an unguarded tyre shredder.

The worker had fatefully tried to clear a jammed machine by hand at Tyre Recycling Australia on 13 August 2018, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

That night, he’d responded to an earlier jam by stopping the shredder and clearing 15 loads of tyre off the conveyor belt. Soon afterwards, it blocked again. Without turning the system off, he reached out to brush tyre pieces away from the shredder. It caught his glove, dragging his right arm into its jaws.

The worker was taken by ambulance to The Alfred hospital. He endured several operations to his forearm and hand as well as a skin graft from his leg.

The court heard that there were more surgeries expected. At best, he’ll regain 30 per cent movement of his arm.

In a victim impact statement, the worker said he had lost his confidence and spark for life. He’d been unable to return to work, pay his rent and his bills.

Formerly “fun loving”, he said he struggled to have friends due to how he looked and felt.

“It made me a completely different person and I hate it.”

A Work Safe inspector found that the machine had been running for six weeks without appropriate barriers and guarding. Training for young workers was also insufficient.

The authority told the court that “inexpensive measures” were “readily available” to reduce the risk.

Three days after the injury, TRA installed guardings, the court heard.

TRA was said to be at risk of losing accreditation if convicted, its lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October.

It was one of four such facilities in Victoria and the only one in Melbourne’s South East, the court heard.

Renex Group, which uses shredded tyre to provide power for its thermal recycling process (pyrolysis), had since taken over TRA. It had since taken steps to ensure the TRA premises was compliant, the lawyer said.

The supervising manager had told workers that he was the only person allowed in the unfenced area, according to his statement to Work Safe.

This was an “administrative” workplace safety control. This was a “legitimate defence”, the lawyer said - though conceding it was “not a great defence”.

Magistrate Sharon McRae said it was an “odd thing” to put to the court - that it was OK for the factory manager to take on all the risk himself.

It was “very, very far short” of appropriate safety measures, Ms McRae said.

“And the supervisor knew that by telling people not to go in that area.”

TRA, which accepted the sentence indication, pleaded guilty. On top of the fine, it was ordered to pay $4217 costs to Work Safe.

Road paved for easy-charge EV off-grid

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Off-grid charging stations for electric vehicles could be part of home garages as soon as 2020.

A research trial of rooftop solar-powered cabinets with battery storage suitable for homes, businesses and car parks was launched at Nissan Australia’s headquarters in Dandenong South on 10 October.

The State-funded research is a partnership between Nissan, Delta Electronics and the CSIRO. According to the study proponents, the world-first technology paves the way for charging stations in off-grid locations and for use on hot days when the grid is under peak stress.

As part of the 200-day trial, three charging units are connected to 5kW and 10kW rooftop solar systems at Nissan Australia’s headquarters in Dandenong South.

Each cabinet will be used to charge up to four Nissan LEAF electric vehicles at a time.

Nissan Australia managing director Stephen Lester said Nissan aimed for electric vehicles to make more than 30 per cent of its sales in five years.

“Nissan is committed to helping innovate the way all its customers access EV charging, while a study of this nature will enable greater EV adoption both here and around the world, reducing the impact on the grid.”

Delta Electronics developed the cabinets, while the CSIRO focused on the module that integrates with solar and battery systems to help charge multiple vehicles quickly, regardless of the weather.

CSIRO’s Centre for Hybrid Energy Systems lead researcher Christopher Munnings said up to 90 per cent of EV charging was likely to take place in the home.

“A normal household battery system is typically not powerful enough to charge a car on a hot day as it can overheat and slow down,” Dr Munnings said.

“We’ve devised a way to manage the temperature of the battery, minimising the amount of power required from the grid.”

A fully-charged LEAF has a range of about 250 kilometres - enough for most Melbourne work commutes. It can be fully charged on the cabinets within six hours - double that for two cars at the same time, Dr Munnings said.

“In a multi-EV home, this system will automatically monitor each car, spreading the load between the battery, solar PV and the rest of the home.

“This means the cars charge as quickly as possible, using as much sun as possible, without the need to upgrade grid connection. This technology could accelerate the widespread rollout of EVs across the country.”

The study findings are expected to be handed down mid-2020, hopefully to confirm its cost and environmental benefits.

The systems are hoped to be market-ready by next year, Delta Electronics director David Leal said.

Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the $210,000 grant aimed to help reduce transport emissions.

“By encouraging electric vehicle take up, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and increase job opportunities in Victoria.

“There’s no reason why something like this, a variation of something like this, shouldn’t be in people’s homes very soon.”

Recycler ‘wage-theft’ probe From front page Greater Dandenong Council has led a multicouncil Back Your Neighbour campaign for the Federal Government to halt its cuts to Status Resolution Support Services payments to asylum seekers.

Its mayors Youhorn Chea and Roz Blades have chaired the Local Government Mayoral Taskforce Supporting People Seeking Asylum.

“Naturally we’re very concerned to read about (the allegations),” Cr Blades said.

“We’ve got to wait for the results of the inquiry.”

Councillor Matthew Kirwan said he was advocating for Greater Dandenong to directly approach Polytrade, similar to what was resolved

by City of Yarra on 8 October.

“Wage theft is a crime and as a Council we should not tolerate our suppliers being involved in it.”

Greater Dandenong acting chief executive Paul Kearsley said the City of Greater Dande-

nong is “a city that welcomes all”.

“We are officially recognised as a Refugee Welcome Zone and we continue to advocate strongly for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.

“Council is aware of the accusations made against Polytrade and is awaiting the findings of the investigation.

“Council is unable to provide any further comments at this time.”

Burglar nabbed at servo A Doveton man has been charged with a violent attempted burglary of a Dandenong South petrol station, police say.

The 24-year-old allegedly used a fire extinguisher to smash the front glass doors of the Caltex servo on Princes Highway about 3.30am on Wednesday 2 October.

A staff member inside the store hit the duress button.

Police attended and arrested the man.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 November.

Fifty residents were evacuated after a fire started in an apartment building’s basement car park in Buckley Street, Noble Park.

The non-suspicious fire started in a personal-property cage, spreading to other cages about 1.55pm on Wednesday 2 October.

Four cars parked next to the cages sustained “moderate” damage, police say.

A police arson chemist attended, declaring the fire as non-suspicious.

A 31-year-old man wanted on police warrant was arrested in alleged possession of an unregistered revolver and a pen pistol in Noble Park North.

The Hughesdale man was stopped by police officers as he walked along Galos Avenue on Monday 7 October, police say.

The man allegedly tried to escape on foot towards a nearby motorcycle, and was arrested.

His weapons were uncovered during a personal search, according to police.

The man was charged with possessing an unregistered handgun, being a prohibited person possessing a firearm and other offences.

He appeared briefly at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day.

A defence lawyer told the court that the man was withdrawing from alcohol and the drug ‘ice’.

The man was remanded to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 23 October.

An 18-year-old man has been charged over an alleged ramming of a police car in Springvale.

Police had allegedly attended to a blue BMW without number plates on Springvale Road about 7.40pm on 25 September.

They had deployed a stop-stick under a rear wheel of the car, police say.

In fleeing the scene, the BMW driver drove over the stop-stick and crashed into a police car with two officers on board.

The BMW, carrying two youths, was last seen driving east on Virginia Street.

The police vehicle sustained “moderate” damage. The two officers were not injured, police say.

One of the youths was arrested the next day.

He was charged with reckless exposure of a police officer while driving, and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 November.

Better by the banquet EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Let's cut to the chase. If you want to sample the full variety of Kabul Kitchen's tandoori ovens, order the banquet.

Most would know the bakery which dishes up hot naan breads through a hole-in-the-wall on Dandenong Market's Cleeland Street wing.

These breads have cult popularity, which owner Ali Haidari boasts as the best in Dandenong. Quality flour and technique make the difference, he says.

But what Dine Local has come to sample are offerings from his restaurant next door, recently opened with co-owner Mohammad Sarwari.

It's a product of a punishing work ethic from these former asylum seekers, who toil from dusk to midnight seven days a week.

Unsurprisingly, they offer a long varied menu of Afghan foods that delight palates Afghan and non-Afghan alike.

There's great chunks of meat cooked on kebabs, subtly spiced and wood-fire smoked.

Tender and generous choices - such as chicken breasts or on the bone, lamb cubes or on the bone.

A popular option is the kabuli palaw - a lamb shank peeling with soft flesh on a mountain of spicy rice, sultanas and shredded carrots.

Highly recommended are the mantu dumplings filled with lamb mince and topped with a warming lentil curry.

Mr Haidari had a dream of opening an eatery for many years. More than a decade ago, he escaped Afghanistan's capital Kabul from the threat of the Taliban.

As a 17-year-old, he travelled alone via Pakistan where he spent three years working and

learning as a chef. Then to Malaysia and a boat across dangerous straits to Australia.

He was locked up in Australian migrant detention centres in Darwin and Christmas Island, not knowing when he'd be released.

Dandenong has been his home since being accepted for a permanent resident visa in 2011.

Baby formula burglar

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A heroin addict involved in a $541,000 burglary racket targeting baby-formula outlets across Melbourne has been jailed.

Gurwinder Gill, 37, pleaded guilty in the County Court of Victoria to nine commercial burglaries in two months, including stealing $17,000 of baby formula and vitamins from Happy Market in Springvale on 21 June 2018.

The other burgled retailers were spread through Point Cook, Port Melbourne, Prahran, Clayton, Burwood, Preston and Mt Waverley.

The goods were intended for export into Asia, Judge Michael Cahill noted.

On Gill's arrest in St Albans in August 2018, police seized his phone, knuckledusters, an angle grinder, $640 and a small bag of heroin.

He told police that other burglars dropped off stolen goods at his home.

At his address, police seized cosmetics, vitamins, beauty products, milk powder and phone promotional products as well as other people's ID cards and bank cards.

Gill claimed he was "hired labour" for the burglaries. He had been "high on drugs" and 'paid' several thousand dollars for his work.

At the time, his family curtailed his access to money to stop him buying drugs. He was being treated for mental health and drug addiction.

Gill made full admissions, identified cooffenders and expressed remorse, Judge Cahill noted.

He was virtually a first-time offender, though on bail during some of the break-ins.

The court heard that the food science graduate arrived from India on a student visa in 2006. Prior to the burglaries, Gill and his wife were working in a cleaning business.

Gill's defence submitted for a jail sentence of less than 12 months followed by a community corrections order, so he wouldn't be deported.

In his time in custody, his depression had worsened into a major depressive disorder, the court was told.

Hardeep Singh and Navjinder Singh, who were co-offenders for some of the burglaries, were jailed for 21 months and 16 months respectively.

Gill was jailed for three years, with a nonparole period of at least 21 months. His term included 398 days in pre-sentence detention.

In sentencing on 2 October, Judge Cahill said Gill faced "almost inevitable" deportation to India and separation from his wife and brother in Australia.

White Ribbon event marches on despite shutdown

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong’s Walk Against Family Violence will go ahead despite the shutdown of White Ribbon Australia.

The council’s acting chief executive Paul Kearsley said the annual event was council funded, and would still take place on Tuesday 19 November.

“Greater Dandenong City Council was proudly a White Ribbon accredited workplace,” Mr Kearsley said. “(The council) is passionate about continuing its advocacy work in preventing family violence and promoting equality and respect towards women.”

The White Ribbon charity recently announced its liquidation - just weeks ahead of

National White Ribbon Day on 22 November.

“White Ribbon Australia has been proud to serve alongside so many dedicated partner organisations, grassroots communities and government in the important work of ending men’s violence against women,” the charity stated on its website.

“For all those who are already planning for White Ribbon Day, we encourage you to continue with those plans alongside the international White Ribbon movement.

“Continue to raise your voice.”

The Walk Against Family Violence will begin at Dandenong Market at 11.30am on 19 November and finish in Harmony Square.

Guest speakers are inspirational swimmer and author Susan Berg and Prevention of Family Violence Minister Gabrielle Williams.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 16 October 1919 Box Hill Boys On Tuesday evening the boys from the Salvation Institution at Box Hill, paid a visit to Dandenong and gave a performance in the local town hall. There was a full house, and the boys provided excellent entertainment, which was thoroughly enjoyed by those present.

The display of human pyramids was carried out very ably, as were the drill ladder climbing, dialogues etc. During the evening an appeal was made and as a result £6/10/was subscribed in the hall, to help along the work connected with the Salvation Army.

50 years ago 14 October 1969 More shops for Springvale South Stage two of a $250,000 drive in shopping

centre at Springvale South is almost completed, and shopkeepers will be operating by midNovember. Mr Ian MacKay, announcing this yesterday for the developers, Robert MacKay and sons. He said an extensive carpark for 300 vehicles would open simultaneously.

The future design will also include an overall garden beautification scheme and a children's playground. Stage two, has been the building of seven new shops and the renovation of three existing ones. The three original shops are a supermarket, a milk bar, which is changing to a newsagency, and a men's hairdressing salon. The new shops will include a greengrocery, a butcher, and a chemist, take away food store fronting Springvale Rd, and a women's hairdresser. Negotiations are processing for the other two shops. Mr Ian MacKay, who is a qualified mechanical and automotive engineer, designed the complex with the help of builders O H Gunther and Co of Springvale.

11 October1999 Freeway plan 'green' move rejected An independent panel's environmentally friendlier compromise for the proposed Scoresby Freeway has been rejected. The panel appointed by the Minister for Planning Mr Maclellan, in September last year, recommended the freeway stop at Greens Road, Dandenong South, to protect environmentally sensitive land in the Dandenong South and Carrum Downs area. But Mr Maclellan has recommended the construction of the full length of the freeway from the Maroondah Highway in Ringwood to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Carrum Downs. A Spokeswoman for Mr Maclellan said the panel found there was no environmental reason the freeway should not be built, but did not have enough information to recommend the full freeway.

Acting Sen Sergeant Graeme Stanley said the activities were a safety issue for participants and bystanders. "Police patrols around those areas will be increasing in order to deter and prosecute any people found participating in any hoon activities" he said. "With warmer weather coming on there's probably been a bit more activity. We're trying to get the message out there as early as we can that we're aware of the activity and we're trying to put in as many resources as we can to deter hoons."

Tracking history’s mystery

By Cam Lucadou-Wells For many, there's mystery behind Noble Park's well-known street and monument names.

Buckley, O'Donoghue, Kirby, Wachter, James and Kerslake - they were great people with great stories, says local historian Gaye Guest.

She is hosting a history walking tour, a twokilometre stroll that recreates the tour by the late Lyall Hayhow for Noble Park's centenary in 2009.

"It's another way of respecting our history and keeping it alive," Ms Guest said.

"When you have a lot of new residents, they probably don't know that history."

She herself, having not grown up in Noble Park, discovered the fascinating heritage during that centenary.

Ms Guest's walk delves the heritage of Ross Reserve and Douglas and Buckley streets. She harks back to times when Noble Park was a village among market gardens and farms.

"People packed up their lives at (Gippsland mining town) Walhalla when the gold ran out.

They put their lives on horses and drays and rebuilt their church and homes here."

Among the talking points will be the former locations of Noble Park Primary and St Anthony's schools as well as the original 1962 pool.

"Back in the day, we would not have had a railway station, school or swimming pool un-

less the residents got together and raised the funds for them."

A written handout of Noble Park's history will be provided to walkers.

Ex-imam refused permit

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former Noble Park imam's attempt to restore his Working With Children permit has been refused by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Ibrahim Omerdic had been convicted in Melbourne Magistrates' Court in 2017 for the unlawful solemnising of a marriage of a 14-year-old girl to a 34-year-old man at the Bosnian Islamic Society's mosque.

In 2019, the state's Secretary of the Department of Justice and Community Safety's issued a negative assessment of his Working With Children check.

On 7 October, VCAT deputy president Mark Dwyer stated Mr Omerdic showed "continuing lack of insight and remorse into his wrongdoing under Australian and Victorian law".

"From an Islamic perspective, Mr Omerdic considered that once a girl had reached puberty, she was of marriageable age and could be given in marriage."

The applicant had regarded the decisions against him as harsh and unjust. His only admitted "mistake" was not to have asked the girl her age, Mr Dwyer noted.

"Mr Omerdic is a man of strong faith.

"However his religious conviction leads

him to a view that he has done nothing wrong.

"It is that same unwavering religious conviction that therefore presents a problem for him in seeking an assessment notice under the WWC Act because he fails to accept the seriousness of his conduct in marrying a 14-yearold girl and facilitating her sexual intimacy with a 34-year-old man.

"I am not prepared to take him 'on trust' and grant him an assessment notice at this stage."

Mr Dwyer said the absence of an assessment notice did not prevent Mr Omerdic from attending his mosque, teaching adults, nor mix-

ing with families and their children generally.

"I accept that Mr Omerdic would not himself be violent to children, or a direct threat to them physically.

"I accept the evidence that he has been involved in community and humanitarian events, and has by all accounts been a good teacher for more than 40 years."

However, he noted that Mr Omerdic had been sacked as imam by the Bosnian Islamic Society immediately after the offence.

He did not appear to be "fully rehabilitated" within the local Muslim Community, Mr Dwyer said.

Business success stories

One of the award nominees on 10 October was Springvale Botanical Cemetery, whose 422-acre gardens of immaculacy are four times larger than the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.

Business development manager Megan Petty told of its mass of 80,000 trees and 30,000 rose bushes - the RBG boasts 15,000 rose plants.

It requires one million litres of water a day to maintain - all harvested from the site's three vast dams and roof-sourced rainwater tanks, Ms Petty said.

No organic matter leaves the site, it's recycled as nutrients for the garden, she added.

The cemetery has branched into community programs beyond its 'core business'. One of them is the Centre for Care & Wellbeing, which offers grief and support services for the bereaved.

It was also the first international winner of the American Cemeteries Excellence Award.

Another nominee Ecostar Double Glazing - a market leader in Europe - repurposed its product for the Victorian climate.

Based in Dandenong, its unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) windows have double panes filled with a void of argon gas.

They are reinforced for better sound reduction and thermal efficiency for local conditions, operations director Paul Woods told the event at Atura Hotel.

"Our business has gone from strength to strength since we moved to Dandenong."

Palm Plaza Lotto, the third nominee, boasts an enviable strike-rate with 37 division-1 lottery winners thus far.

South East Local Learning and Employment Network - the fourth nominee - is launching a program This Is It to distribute businesses' depreciated laptops to disadvantaged students.

Chief executive Andrew Simmons described how the network was set up as an "intermediary" for students between schools, higher education and employers.

It was part of a Navigator program tackling the 12,500 chronically abstinent students in the South East. Of 800 referrals, the program had got 350 students engaged back with school, Mr Simmons said.

Chisholm Institute student Andrew Kemp was nominated for the youth enterprise award.

The Work Education Certificate 1 student was hailed for his astute eye for detail, including OHS and maintenance issues.

Health care check St John of God Health Care is giving the community the opportunity to share their thoughts around health care services to be offered at Gibb Street, Berwick.

A community forum will be held on Tuesday 22 October and will allow members of the community to voice their opinions, ideas and concerns about healthcare in Melbourne's south east.

St John of God Health Care has always prioritised meeting the needs of the community and has upheld this track record since the Sisters of St John of God emigrated to rural Western Australia from Ireland in 1895, responding to a call for help after severe outbreaks of typhoid.

Fast forward to 2019 and St John of God Health Care are once again looking to establish the ever-changing health care requirements of its community and respond with new and growing facilities to service those needs.

Locally in Berwick, the Gibb Street location was the original home of St John of God Berwick Hospital and was first established as a private hospital, then called Shepton Private Hospital, in 1910.

In 2018 the Berwick hospital moved to its new and bigger facility at Kangan Drive, leaving Gibb Street vacant with a huge potential for new services.

Residents are invited to come along to the community forum and share what's important to them and their family, from the ways their family's health care needs will change in the years to come and what services and facilities they will need, to considering the distances travelled to access city based services that they would like to see offered closer to home.

Community consultation was vital in the development of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital and resulted in the opening of

Cops’ wild chase

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April.

It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne.

The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park.

The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs.

Witnesses say they saw the vehicle drivdriv iing on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.

Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway.

The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified. disqualified He was charged with aggravated carjacking;

counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft.

A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft.

Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April.

A 21-year21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with two t counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

She was bail bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates' s' Court on 3 September.

Panthers are on the board

By Tyler Lewis and Nick Creely A culmination of class, tactical brilliance and grunt handed Dandenong its first win of the season on the weekend.

After a strong finish with the ball in Round 1, Brett Forsyth sent Footscray in and straight away the changes to the approach with the ball were noticeable.

Suraj Randiv took the second over of the match and was immediately on the money, having Dogs superstar Dean Russ searching for bat on ball and unable to find it.

Having some trouble from the tweakers' tight bowling, Russ found a way at the other end against Jakeb Thomas, dancing down the wicket to the quick and slapping him through and over cover in sensational fashion.

When the first wicket fell and Travis Dean met Russ in the middle, it was a real moment of balance in the match as the pair had been so difficult to remove.

But it was Peter Cassidy's endless stumpto-stump bowling that forced a false stroke out of Russ and claimed the big wicket before he could reach 50.

With only a singular run added following the big wicket of Russ, Ed Newman and James Nanopoulos combined after a mix up between the wickets to remove Dean for less than 10.

Footscray skipper Dylan Kight and patient left-hander Matt Underwood steadied the ship in the middle overs but, pleasingly for the Panthers, they were doing so without adding much scoreboard pressure.

When Randiv came back on to combine with Akshat Buch, he broke the 51-run partnership by sending Kight back to the sheds for 28.

Underwood begun to accelerate once he closed in on his half-century and burst away following the milestone. With him in combination with Hamish Winter-Irving, the Dogs wrestled back some momentum.

A late onslaught by Winter-Irving (28 not out from 15 balls) had the Dogs set 8/200 on what loomed to be a true wicket.

With four runs per over needed, Brett Forsyth wasted no time to get the first over's required runs when he effortlessly caressed the first ball of the innings through the offside to the fence.

The elegant opener then powerfully pushed another boundary through the offside before his briefly entertaining innings was brought to a close on 14.

Ed Newman shortly followed his opening partner back to the pavilion, placing the Panthers in some early trouble.

At 2/21 Comrey Edgeworth and Lincoln Edwards faced a monstrous climb to avoid a winless start to the season after two rounds.

Stemming the bleeding at the beginning of their respective innings', it didn't take long before the grace and supremacy shun through.

Cam Forsyth removed any chance of a collapse by knocking the ball around and finishing the job that was set up earlier by a superb 54 from Edgeworth and an unbeaten 79 from Edwards.

At 4/190, Forsyth took the weight off the shoulders of Edwards by hitting the last 10 runs to secure the Panthers victory.

In the DDCA Turf 1 season's opening weekend, new-look sides Berwick and Springvale

South went head-to-head in an early blockbuster at Arch Brown Reserve.

The Bears won the toss and elected to bat, and openers Jordan Cleland and Matt Chasemore got off to a perfect start, knocking up 74 for the first wicket before Bloods spinner Jarryd Straker (4/22) turned the tide in what loomed as the game-changing spell at the time.

Skittling Chasemore for a well-made 33 off 46, Straker struck two balls later to remove Josh Holden, before only overs later sending recruit Ruwantha Kellepotha packing and classy opener Cleland on his way for 48 in a stunning spell that saw the Bears slump to 4/89 and in need of a late push.

And it came through Lachlan Brown, who crashed the boundaries on his way to a decisive 41 not out off 51 balls, with the Bears scrambling their way to 6/164 off 40 overs.

over, with fellow opener and skipper Ateeq Javid (35) looking solid in defence in a ripping opening spell from Wilcock and Bears champ Jarrod Goodes.

Brendan Rose (2/25) was the man to kickstart things for the Bears, snaring the dangerous King for just 18, before they worked their way through the top-order to leave the game in the balance at 4/91.

But the Bears were unrelenting as the Bloods desperately chased some momentum, with the spinners doing the damage in the middle overs to snare an important early-season win with the visitors bundled out for 119, losing their last five wickets for just 26 runs.

In the remaining matches, Buckley Ridges (3/157) raced down St Mary's (9/153) total with ease, with captain-coach David White starting with a bang, contributing 81. Hallam Kalora Park (3/90) also soared to a comfortable win against North Dandenong (88), while Narre South (166) pipped HSD (9/165) in a thriller.

Greater Dandenong’s sporting stars are recognised

By Nick Creely The City of Greater Dandenong recognised some of the region's finest sporting talent at the annual sports awards evening on Wednesday 9 October at Ian Tatterson Pavilion in Keysborough.

The awards, now into their fifth year, are aimed to recognise the contribution of people within the Dandenong sporting community in order to grow sport and provide opportunities for people from all backgrounds to participate.

Rising 16-year-old badminton star Kaitlyn Ea from the Smashing Feathers Badminton Club took out two major gongs on the night, taking out the Junior Athlete of the Year as well as the prized Athlete of the Year award.

Kaitlyn's mother, Michelle, accepted both awards on her behalf, with the rising star currently in Russia competing in the World Championships for Australia. The teenage sensation continues to rise up the ranks around the world, and is one to keep an eye on in the coming years.

In the other awards, South Springvale Soccer Club junior girls coach Paul Xistras was awarded the Coach of the Year, Silverton Cricket Club once again shone on the night with Dean Jones taking out the Club Volunteer of the Year as the Bakers continue to do some remarkable things within the community, the incredible Noble Park Bulls Reclink Football Program took out the Community Program of the Year, while Dandenong Cricket's women's 1st XI took out the Team of the Year, and Mick Rossato's superb work over 40 years with the Noble Park Juniors saw him named the Inspiring Club Person of the Year.

Mayor Roz Blades also honoured all of the Dandenong-based winning teams with prominent clubs such as Buckley Ridges Cricket Club, Dandenong Cricket Club, South Springvale Soccer Club and the Dandenong Baseball Club also recognised for their outstanding team achievements and continued success within the local community.

Southside Flyers WNBL star Rebecca Cole was the guest speaker on the night, and talked about her stellar career to date - which includes running second in the 2018/19 WNBL MVP voting and inclusion in the 2019 Australian women's national basketball squad - as well as the season ahead and her love for the Dandenong sporting community.

Worth the wait for Cody

Dandenong Stingray draft hopeful Cody Weightman thrives on the big stage. could've put more pressure on myself, but having that advice sort of lead me straight and I knew I didn't have to do that."

The National Combine is one of the final chances for AFL clubs to test draft prospects not only physically but mentally.

While exhausting, the experience and pressure is something Weightman thrived on.

"Going in everyone says you will have heaps of time and you will be able to relax but that couldn't have been more polar opposite from my experience," he said.

"The first day was reasonably chilled out but still a bit on and then from the second to the fourth day I hardly had a breath.

"It was flat out - the second day was a lot of club and media interviews, the whole day, so it got really tiring and towards the end of the day.

"I repeated myself heaps and (it was) just mentally fatiguing and we hadn't even done a physical test yet.

"The following two days brought the physical testing - I would probably say they were easier in terms of fatigue.

"I stay pretty calim and soak it up if anything - I think it is pretty cool to have all those

clubs looking at you, taking notes."

The big stage often scares players, but it just another aspect of the game Weightman would love to take part in.

"Whether it is me or the team I don't really care who they are cheering for, it is just a bonus," he said.

"It would be awesome - I think you get another gear out of having that bit of adrenaline from the big crowd, it is a good challenge to see how you cope under that different type of pressure. I enjoy that scene; it is something I would look forward to."

Despite labelling himself as a 'footy head', Weightman has been working hard this year to find some time away from footy, and he has found it in the form of recovery, while enjoying some time to complete his hobbies.

The first round draft night is set to take place on 27 November in just over a month's time - a night that won't just reward Weightman's hard work this season, but set his future ambitions in place.

Cody Weightman is built to lead the way on the big stage.

Whether it is 100,000 fans filling the stands of the MCG, his classmates cheering from the grass at Haileybury, with the Dandenong Stingrays at Shepley Oval, or with his childhood friends at Holm Park in Beaconsfield - it's all the same to him.

Weightman first picked up a Sherrin for his home club, Beaconsfield, and it has since been difficult to claw from his grasp.

Usually for draft prospects, the reality of a bright future at the highest level doesn't click until they step foot on to the hallowed turf on debut.

But for Weightman it was being made an example of by one of Australia's most elite athletes that instilled faith into his dreams.

"I think as a Year 10 (student), I had Craig Mottram who is a coach from Haileybury for athletics and he instilled confidence in me," he said.

"He told a group of people the way I was going and used me as an example how other people should be going about my off-field stuff.

"I think that was a moment I thought 'this really could happen'.

"I have always wanted it and for someone else, especially a four or five time Olympian to say it like Craig Mottram gave me a lot of confidence and made me feel like it could be a reality one day."

While Weightman captained the football team to a three-peat in 2019, Mottram wasn't the only influence he has been inspired by.

Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd often passed on his wisdom to him - not only for footy, but in leadership.

"Yeah Lloydy has been huge for me," he said.

"I am pretty lucky to have a big name who knows so much about footy and just a really good and genuine bloke.

"I have been able to be a sponge from him and I try to take as much advice out of him as possible and learn from the career he had.

"He has a wealth of knowledge and hopefully I can go on to a journey like his, but for now I have been picking his brain, trying to get the clues that helped him achieve that success.

"As a captain I try to be really inclusive especially in a school environment when you have (Year) 10s, 11s, and 12s playing firsts footy - you really want to welcome the Year 10s as part of the culture.

"I think leadership is natural or not to people - for me I think it comes naturally a little bit.

"Lloydy gave me some really good advice when I was voted in as captain.

"He passed on a quote that James Hird told him when he was captain.

"He just said 'you have been voted in as captain for what you have done in the past so there is no need to change anything going forward - be yourself and do what made you get given the captaincy'.
