Sandy a hero cat

By Derek Schlennstedt Sandy the carrot coloured cat from Boronia has become this year’s winner of the Advocate People’s Rescue Story in the national Jetpets Companion Animal Rescue Awards.

Sally Gaunt from Boronia said the bittersweet tangerine titan saved her son Beau in 2011 when he suffered a seizure while sleeping.

“It was Good Friday and Sandy woke me pawing and biting my hair,” Ms Gaunt said.

“I thought he wanted feeding so ignored him, but he kept on biting me.

“I woke to find Beau unconscious in bed twitching, making clicking noises and drooling a great deal.

Ms Gaunt said that even when medics arrived, Sandy didn’t leave Beau’s side and tried to sit under the stretcher in the ambulance.

“They got him to the ambulance, and were working on Beau to help him breathe with a tube and airbag.”

“I was so upset, but noticed Sandy sitting under the stretcher.”

“The hospital advised Beau was very lucky to have Sandy as he would have passed away if we hadn’t found him ... we are eternally grateful to still have Sandy in our lives.”

The cat has been a big part of the family’s life since 2009 when they were living in Ferntree Gully.

At the time they were looking for a fourlegged family member and came across several kittens in an adoption pen.

Since then the two have been inseparable.

“Sandy just jumped up into his lap and immediately snuggled into Beau,” Ms Gaunt said.

“The volunteer at the RSPCA got her camera as she said she had never seen this bond so quickly and wanted to show her co workers. It was instant so we took him home.”

While beau now has a video monitor to alert the family when he has a seizure, Sandy still keeps a watchful eye over him.

“Beau still has epilepsy. He is doing well now. His epilepsy was generally nocturnal so for years we had to sleep with a video monitor on to ensure we could be alerted.”

“Of course Sandy is always with him at night.”

It seems that in spring, even more noteworthy then angry magpies swooping careless and innocent children is the recent surge in large swarms of bees deciding to settle down in houses, cars and basically any stationary object that is left alone for an hour or two.

In the past few weeks, we've had bees on cars at Healesville Hospital, bees in houses in Monbulk and folks, it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.

Now, while bees might be absolutely vital to the continuation of our global ecosystem, nobody wants thousands of stingy bois swarming directly outside your car or inside your house.

So, here at the Mail, we put our investigative journalist hats on and took a deep dive into why bees decide to glaze themselves onto things without warning. To the Bee-mobile!

The mail spoke to Macclesfield resident and Emerald Regional Beekeepers Association member Greg Huggins about this strange phenomenon.

"Swarming is just a natural reproductive cycle of the bees at this time of the year," he told the Mail.

"Over winter they're quiet and then as it gets warmer the queen starts laying profusely

Emerald Regional Beekeepers Association member Greg Huggins said bee swarms were generally placid and move on within a day or two. so the number of bees suddenly increases, and suddenly a two bedroom house with two kids becomes a two bedroom house with four kids and it becomes overcrowded in the hive so half of them more or less leave with the old queen."

"The swarm is basically just bees in transit who have left the original hive clump together for safety and are scouting out new homes."

"They will hang in a shrub or tree fern or a car as a transit point, while the scout bees are out looking for a new home."

Already Mr Huggins has removed three swarms from trees and shrubs located close to homes.

In Healesville the Mail reported on a swarm of around 4500 bees that had chosen to relocate onto a nurses car.

Mr Huggins said that in most instances, removing a swarm is relatively easy, and that swarms were generally quite docile.

"Generally speaking bees in a swarm are not aggressive, they're usually quite passive."

"Bees are only aggressive when they are defending a hive. If you're in transit you don't have a home to defend and all you're doing is waiting peacefully for the scouts to find a new home."

He said that if you locate a swarm, it was important to keep a safe distance and contact a professional beekeeper if close to a house or people.

"Step one is to just leave them alone and keep your children and pets at a respectful distance ... if they are close to the house or people leave them alone and call us and we'll make every effort to remove them and rehome them in a snug and cosy hive."

This October, Edna Walling's historic gardens at Bickleigh Vale will open to the public for one day only.

Open Gardens Victoria is hosting a rare opening of the eight gardens on 13 October in Mooroolbark's Bickleigh Vale Village.

Visitors can picnic in the gardens, feast on a gourmet sausage sizzle, view an old wares stall, get creative with textile art and craft and much more.

Bickleigh Vale resident Maryann SporonFiedler said the open gardens appeal to everyone.

"It's interesting to most people as it is a tiny heritage area in the heart of suburbia, designed by a woman at a time when women didn't work in that field," she said.

"It's gorgeous for children as it's like a fairyland full of nooks and crannies.

"At this opening, there are eight gardens open. I have been here 25 years and we have never had that many open."

The eight gardens set to open include Badgers Wood, The Barn, Devon Cottage, Downderry, Hurst, Sonningfield, Whistlewood and Wimborne.

All of which were designed and created by Edna Walling almost 100 years ago and named after the Devonshire village from her childhood.

Jennifer Vardy and her husband have lived at The Barn for almost 10 years.

She said the gardens are a true reflection of Edna Walling's vision to create houses and gardens harmoniously with each other and the natural environment.

Belgrave parking plan to go ahead

By Derek Schlennstedt Residents, traders and passengers have provided feedback on the new multi-deck car park being built at Belgrave Station.

According to the feedback, locals support the construction of the new car park, with the majority citing an increase in the number of car parking spaces as the most important benefit of the upgrade.

Safety was a significant consideration for station users, and a third of people said they would like to see lighting and CCTV incorporated into the new car park.

Respondents also said that they wanted better traffic management to reduce congestion, with people having difficulty getting in and out of the existing car park, particularly during peak hours and at school drop-off

and pick-up times.

People were given the option to decide on the finish they would like to see on the car park, and in line with the desire for the car park to blend in with the natural environment in the area, a timber effect was the most popular choice.

The feedback was gathered through an online survey, which was available on the Department of Transport's Get Involved website from 3 May to 23 June, and two face-to-face community engagement sessions, held in June.

In total more than 370 people fed back through the survey or attended a drop in session.

The information gathered will be used to inform the concept design for the car park, which is set to be released later this year.

Once the concept design is available, fur-

ther engagement with the community and stakeholders will take place, and planning work for the car park will continue in conjunction with expert engineers and architects.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino said The Labor Government was committed to delivering an upgraded car park with an extra 470 spaces,.

"It's important the new car park at Belgrave Station delivers on what the community needs, so I would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend a community session or fill in the online survey."

"The feedback we heard, and the results from the recent ground surveys and sampling works carried out onsite, will provide valuable input into the concept designs."

Female firefighters join ranks of the willing

By Romy Stephens The Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade has received a big boost ahead of summer, with an influx of female firefighters joining its ranks.

Five females graduated from their rookie course on 6 October and another two are set to begin the course shortly.

Karen Nelsen has been Treasurer at the brigade for the past six years and as a single mum often takes her daughter, Lily, down to the brigade.

She said that the team at Upper Ferntree Gully has been extremely supportive of welcoming females.

"I'm a single mother, my daughter's involved in CFA and the guys are brilliant role models for my children and they're brilliant friends," she said.

"The comradeship is absolutely fantastic, a great support network.

"Our CFA has probably one of the largest group of females, they really range. Some of them started off in the juniors and have come through that way, others have transferred from other CFAs." Amber Johnson is an operational firefighter whose dad's involvement in the brigade and her desire to help the community inspired her to get involved.

She said despite the role of an operational firefighter being quite strenuous, she's built up to the workload through training.

"It is very physically demanding, you've got to be fit to be able to do it," she said.

"I started and I was very weak and I've become a lot stronger now."

The Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade is a Volunteer Fire Service that has been serving the local community since 1926.

Be Motosafe For the month of October, police in the Yarra Ranges will take part in Operation MotoSafe, which aims to keep motorcyclists safe and free from injury.

The operation will run throughout eastern Victoria and coincides with the MotoGP Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2019.

Eastern Region Road Policing Inspector Stephen Cooper said that this year has been a particularly challenging year on Victorian roads, with a lot of the trauma taking place in country Victoria.

"At the beginning of the year we saw a lot of fatalities and serious injuries involving motorcyclists," Insp Cooper said.

"With the warmer weather encouraging riders to get back on their motorcycles, we want everyone to know that police will be out enforcing against those who engage in risky behaviour."

During the operation police will focus on reducing the incidence and severity of road trauma, targeting drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs, as well as fatigue.

The Grand Prix will be a major focus of the operation with a highly visible police presence ensuring visitors to Phillip Island arrive safely.

Between 25 and 27 October, police will be on patrol in and around the race track and on all roads leading to Phillip Island.

"With increased motorcycle traffic in the area, we need both motorcyclists and other road users to be alert and aware of their surroundings," Insp Cooper said.

"The Grand Prix weekend is one motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy and look forward to every year.

"The last thing we would want is for it to end in tragedy."

"Don't be afraid, you don't have to come in a drive a truck, you don't have to handle the hoses there's other roles for women in CFA," she said.

"We encourage whatever skills that you've

got, you can bring them in and we can help create roles where you'll fit into the group."

Investigators from the Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit have charged seven people after discovering a large quantity of alleged drugs concealed in a car.

Police intercepted the Kia Sportage at a service station on the Melba Highway, Glenburn, just after 9pm yesterday evening (2 October).

The car was searched and a quantity of drugs were located within an internal cavity of the vehicle with an alleged value in excess of $275,000.

A 26-year-old Croydon man, and a 22-yearold Croydon Hills man who were occupants of the vehicle were both arrested.

They were both charged with trafficking commercial quantity of drugs and proceeds of crime and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Following the discovery police executed several search warrants at addresses Croydon, Croydon Hills, Kilsyth and Mt Evelyn and arrested a further five alleged offenders.

Items seized following the warrants included, over 250 cannabis plants, a large amount of cash, a firearm, knuckle dusters, and a variety of other drugs with an alleged value of just over $250,000.

Locally, a 26-year -old man from Mt Evelyn was charged with cultivating commercial quantity of cannabis and will face court.

Croydon DTU Detective Senior Sergeant Jim Sutherland said this operation culminated with a total street value seizure of over $640,000 worth of illicit party drugs and cannabis.

Community upgrades I have been immensely proud to represent residents of the hills, as I have lived in Dandenong Ranges for the majority of my life.

A key focus of mine has always been to ensure that first-class sports, health, community facilities and local jobs are created, as our hills are usually isolated.

Sport plays an important role across the Emerald, Gembrook and Cockatoo region and the benefits of the Liberal Government investment in the facilities is felt right across the community.

The funding for these important community projects is only possible because of the Morrison Government's plan for a stronger economy.

Below I have included previous projects I have promised to deliver and are being delivered.

Federal Member for La Trobe Massive local roads funding projects for duplicating Wellington Road for $110 million and $300 million for sealing roads in the hills.

I have worked with local groups to get firstclass facilities such as Emerald Football Netball Club social room upgrades, Gembrook Cockatoo Trail, Emerald Discovery Centre, Emerald

Scouts, Emerald Primary School Basketball courts, Gembrook Playground and Skate Park, Hills Hub Emerald, Chandler Recreation Reserve upgrades and Emerald Secondary College Performing Arts Centre.

In the last election, Emerald Football Club and Gembrook Cockatoo Football Netball Club was my key priority as the local MP because of the significant benefits for the La Trobe community.

I have committed $500,000 Federal funding to Emerald Football Club for the upgrade of facilities, courts in small sheds and upgrading the female change rooms.

I would also like to say that the Australian Federal Government has heard my advocacy on behalf of my community to support youth and I had an opportunity to announce $450,000 boost for Gembrook Cockatoo Foot-

ball and Netball Club.

This funding will help Gembrook Cockatoo Football Netball Club to upgrade their clubrooms.

Last election, the Federal Government provided $1 million for construction of a new twostory football and sporting pavilion to replace the old pavilion.

This will increase community participation and use of the Gembrook football ground area.

The project work is due to start in October this year.

I also committed a record $30 million Federal funding for local tourism projects, which would not only create local jobs but also would upgrade old facilities, create new hubs and new walking paths.

I am hoping to have your support so I can continue to deliver for residents in The Hills.

Melissa a local champion

By Derek Schlennstedt Brad Battin has recognised Gembrook resident Melissa Williamson for her outstanding service and commitment to the Gembrook region.

On 1 October - as part of the Gembrook Community awards - Ms Williamson was awarded the Gembrook Local Champion shield.

While the young mum said she was humbled by the award she felt there were others who were equally deserving.

“I feel very warm and bubbly to be nominated, but I really want to recognise all of the people in the community that didn’t get a nomination, and call out to people to really get behind these awards next year and nominate someone. There’s so many people that do good in our community.”

Ms Williamson was integral in organising the So Long Summer event earlier this year, which acted as a fundraiser for the Gembrook kinder.

She has also been a strong advocate of the Kinder Bush kinder program and over the past few months has organised a Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease fun-run.

The fun-run aims to raise awareness and funds for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) and has been immensely successful so far, with Mr Battin and the Federal Minister for Education Dan Tehan all opting to participate in the event on 27 October.

Mums everywhere can attest that squeezing in exercise-on top of everything else-is a true feat.

So, drawing on her own experiences as a mother, Ms Williamson said she wanted to create a community driven fun-run that mothers with prams, or people in wheelchairs could participate in.

“I just wanted an inclusive environment. I didn’t understand why there wasn’t anything at

“For me I don’t have any family close by who could watch the kids when I go run, so they come with me pretty much everywhere and this fun-run gives families the opportunity to get active and for families to be active together. I think it’s extremely important for both physical and mental health.”

She told the mail the fun run was dedicated to a close friend who was diagnosed with CJD and passed away in 2013.

“I had a friend in 2013 pass away from CJD,” she said.

“I started working with her years ago and

she took me under my wing at a time in my life where i suppose i didn’t have any family or friends. I lost my way a bit and lost my faith in people really.

“Then I met Sandy and she restored my faith in people. She reminded me that there are nice people out there.

“She restored my faith so I want to do that to other people. I want to show other people that there are nice people out there and we can all be nice and help each other.”

Other notable awardees included Gembrook Vet Dr Tom Cook for his work with the Gembrook Riding Club, Gembrook Scouts,

Gembrook Pre-School, and Primary School.

Mr Battin noted that Tom’s 7.30pm Thursday sessions have provided funds for the CFA and the newly formed Cassanga Fund.

Kirra Kruzicevic from the 1st Cockatoo Scout Group also received an award for assisting in the revitalisation of the 1st Cockatoo Scout Group, which included leading a team of volunteers to clean up the Allan Bailey Building where the scouts now meet.

Now in her fifth year as treasurer and bar manager at the Gembrook RSL, Carol Thompson was recognised for the 5000 man-hours that she has dedicated to the RSL

The shop’s laneway nursery has a colourful array of flowers and natives ready for spring planting.

WANDIN SILVAN FIELD DAYS

Field Days celebrate 50

By Romy Stephens Fifty years ago, the Wandin Silvan Field Days festival came to life.

Always a popular event among locals, it originally hosted a small number of tractors and farm machinery with a couple of white tents scattered throughout a single oval.

Gruyere farmer Peter Burgi is one of two people still around that attended the first festival in 1969.

He recalled a different scene from what visitors will see at the festival today.

“It was just a circle of exhibitors around the East Wandin Cricket Ground,” he said.

“It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky.

“It was primarily designed to show off the new equipment that was available, more of a machinery field day.”

The event originally started as a means for people to source information and network with others in the industry.

“When we first started there was no internet and no mobile phones so you had to work to get your information,” Mr Burgi said.

“You could come along to the field days and talk to the people that were selling things and compare them on the site.”

Wind the clock forward to today and the festival has grown into a much larger event, not only for the agriculture and horticulture industry but also other types of businesses and even families.

“It’s changed from purely a farmers’ day to cater for women and children and for people that don’t have the interest in farming,” Mr Burgi said.

This year the festival is back to celebrate it’s 50th anniversary.

Those attending will not only see the latest in farm machinery, technology and related services but also have the chance to network with others in the industry.

Meanwhile, it’s expected some of the old

machinery and former exhibitors and committee members will attend to help celebrate the special milestone.

But the event is not just for those who are interested in agriculture and horticulture - organisers said there would also be plenty for the entire family to do.

About 4500 visitors attended the Field Days last year.

The Information and Lifestyle Pavillion will host special interest exhibitors selling a range of different things such as food, wine, craft, nursery produce, clothing, jewellery and much more.

The Heritage Draught Horse Club will attend to display and promote the use of draught

horses in bygone days.

Children won’t be left to twiddle their thumbs, with a pet show, snake pit, pony rides and an animal nursery among the activities to keep them entertained.

As much as the festival has changed over the years, Mr Burgi said it was a big achieve-

ment to have kept the social aspect of the event going for such a long time.

“Fifty years in life is a bit of a milestone. To be able to run it for 50 years continually is a pretty fair effort,” he said. “(I enjoy) meeting people that you don’t see on a regular basis...talking to the exhibi-

tors that you’ve probably known for many years.

“I’ve made some very good friends over the years.”

The 50th Wandin Silvan Field Days will be held on 11 and 12 October at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve in Wandin East.

Improving skills for work The Mountain District Learning Centre (MDLC) is one of few providers to receive an extension of the Skills First Reconnect program.

The program, run by the Department of Education and Training, assists people aged 17 to 64 years who have not completed year 12 or equivalent and who are long-term unemployed.

Not only has the program received funding, but also an additional 15 available places.

This additional funding reflects the government’s desire to support as many Victorians as possible who might be looking to retrain in order to improve their employability prospects.

MDLC has already completed two rounds of Reconnect with over 80 per cent of participants partaking in further education.

The centre claimed that many of these participants have either continued with education or have found employment.

MDLC said it is proud of the programs achievements and the achievements of participants.

The Reconnect team comprises of coordinator Kerri Gravina and case worker Racheal Edwards.

The pair works directly with participants to support their learning and wellbeing needs.

They assist re-engagement in education by helping participants overcome any barriers they may face.

Through Reconnect, MDLC claims it builds the resilience and capability of participants to set them on the path of success.

MDLC also offers cost-effective general interest programs, learn local courses and is a Register Training Organisation.

This includes learning languages such as French, German, Italian and Mandarin, art

and craft activities, health and exercise, adult literacy, computer skills, bookkeeping and Saturday smartphone workshops plus events and social activities.

Plenty of produce Monbulk Produce Market is a community market showcasing fresh seasonal produce and wares to the town.

The market offers over 40 stalls and hosts a friendly atmosphere with live music.

It has community groups that offer goods for fundraising including sausage sizzles and preserves that are locally made and grown.

Local students and small businesses offer hand-crafted goods, clothing, soaps and gifts for all occasions and the Country Women’s Association provides traditional baked goods.

The market has been running for five years and partners with Monbulk Secondary College students who bring the market to the next level by offering challenges, mental health awareness and plenty of fun for all ages.

The market organisers said they hope visitors can meet someone local, make new connections, feel welcome to have a seat at the picnic tables, observe the buzz of the town of Monbulk and enjoy the social market experience.

Jon Stevens ready to bring big hits

By Romy Stephens The best of Noiseworks and INXS will be coming to Mount Evelyn this month as Jon Stevens prepares to hit the York on Lilydale stage.

After fronting the two bands over 15 years ago, Jon is now touring Australia and performing his favourite hits from both.

The Noiseworks & INXS Collection tour has already seen him travel across the country performing classic songs such as No Lies, Love Somebody, Never Tear Us Apart and more.

Jon said audiences have been really engaged, particularly because they are familiar with all of the songs.

"Every nights kind of full-on because people are just so into it," he said.

"Every song you know, you've grown up with.

"It's a big sing-along, people are so happy.

"Particularly in the pubs, the music from INXS was born out of the pubs."

Jon first hit the big time in the early 1980s when he helped bring the classic Aussie rock sound of Noiseworks to Australian airwaves.

He continued to work even when Noiseworks was on hiatus, by following up with solo albums, multiple stints in stage productions and earned worldwide acclaim by taking centre stage with INXS during the early 2000s.

His next band - The Dead Daisies - stepped up that international reputation with the debut single Lock and Load written with and featuring the legendary Slash on guitar.

Jon said his latest tour was inspired by high demand and encouragement from INXS cofounder Andrew Farris.

"Andrew Farris came to one of our recent

"So, with his blessing, and the continual requests from fans, it is Noiseworks and INXS all the way."

Despite playing in big arenas across the world Jon said his approach to playing in smaller venues, such as the York, doesn't change.

He said audiences can still expect to be "rocked the hell out of."

"Whether it's 100,000 or 100 it's the same performance," he said.

"I don't go half-arsed with a small crowd I go 100 miles an hour.

By Derek Schlennstedt With sensational tales packed with screen luminaries, side-splitting comedies, and stories of iconic Jewish trailblazers and innovators, the Jewish International Film Festival returns for another year to the Belgrave Cameo.

Featuring over 60 films from 23 countries, the Festival builds on almost 30 years of bringing the best of Jewish cinema to Australia and will feature at the Cameo from 7 - 20 November.

Festival director Eddie Tamir said he is excited about this year’s selection - the eighth year under his leadership - with many films having premiered at festivals including Jerusalem, Cannes, Toronto and Berlin.

“This year’s Festival celebrates stories of people who have forged new paths - from the groundbreaking sexual therapist Dr Ruth Westheimer and the late actor Anton Yelchin, to innovators like Lea Gottlieb, the designer behind the iconic Gottex bather brand,” said Jewish International Film Festival Artistic Director, Eddie Tamir.

Of the many poignant and touching movies that are featuring as part of the festival, none have garnered as much interest as the world war II satire, Jojo Rabbit.

Drawing on his own Jewish heritage and

his experiences growing up surrounded by prejudice, writer-director Taika Waititi (whose mother is Jewish, while his father is Maori) makes a powerful statement against hate in his latest film.

The movie follows Jojo, a lonely German boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

“We are thrilled to present the premieres of three excellent Australian films; a great selection of American indie titles; compelling stories from the Holocaust era; and Jojo Rabbit - one of the strongest films we have ever presented,” Mr Tamir said.

Joaquin Phoenix delivers a riveting performance as Arthur Fleck, a severely-depressed man struggling to put on a happy face.

The pacing has a tense rubber-band effect: small positives, such as Arthur's job as a clown and his tender relationship with his mother, brighten his mood and outlook, but misfortunes, shocking discoveries about his past and the general hopelessness of his condition cause his mind to crash back into darkness.

The suspense tightens, and the intense fatigue and angst in Pheonix's performance escalate, as this back-and-forth effect progress-

es, until Arthur's sanity inevitably snaps.

Arthur's development is a powerful study in irony. Assuming his Joker persona, Arthur attains newfound focus and vigour, but commits horrific acts of violence and theatrical sadism.

Arthur heals, but in sickening ways; this clash of sympathetic and monstrous makes him all the more compelling.

The film also features a slimy outing from Robert De Niro as Arthur's talk-show host hero, grungy art direction capturing the widespread discontent and wealth disparity of '80s America, and an eerie score from Hildur Guonadottir (composer for the Emmy-winning Chernobyl mini-series).

Joker is a taut, superbly-acted and deeplyconfronting character study about a man both succumbing to darkness and growing through it.

Bloods shake off scare

By Romy Stephens As weather conditions took a blustery turn for the Premier Division grand final, it was Olinda Ferny Creek who rained on Cranbourne’s parade but only just.

It’s fair to say the Eagles saved their best game for last, as they took it up to the Bloods for the entire four quarters during the final game of the season on 27 September at Toomuc Reserve.

But the biggest upset of the season wasn’t to be, as the Bloods came home with a 31-28 win and sealed their third premiership in a row.

After a sunny start to the morning, storm clouds rolled over just before the game and sent pelting rain down.

The rain, accompanied by strong winds, clearly disrupted the Bloods early as they were unable to send clean lobs into tall goal shooter Peri Stewart.

Meanwhile, Cranbourne defender and league best and fairest Tara Cecil wreaked havoc in defence as she not only scrapped for intercepts and tips but also threw some lovely long bombs into the Eagles’ shooters.

But it was the poise of the Bloods that saw them still manage to edge in front and take a six-goal lead into half-time.

During the second half, the Eagles’ defence continued to do everything it could to eliminate their oppositions clear height-advantage.

But the Bloods’ experienced midcourt - led by the likes of best-on-court Alice Paget, Krista Tomlinson and Madison Taylor - ensured defensive turnovers were continuously capitalised on.

Cranbourne fought back bravely during the final quarter but in the end, failed to take advantage of numerous opportunities and couldn’t overrun the Bloods’ experience.

Olinda head coach Tim Smith said he was worried during the game due to the poor conditions and such a determined opponent.

“It was more a feeling of relief. Cranbourne really took it to us,” he said.

“We traditionally haven’t played well in the wet and that’s over the last couple of years.

We’ve been a team that’s been able to really break fast on transition and convert.

“That was our lowest score that we’ve had almost for two years and that’s because Cranbourne played well.

“They had hands over and they contested every ball. They were tough competition, I was worried.”

“That court was one of the wettest I’ve ever played on, that water did not disperse at all so it was just about being smart,” she said.

“I’m so proud to know that we were able to win in a close situation when we hadn’t had such a close game all season.

“It was really nice to know that we dug deep and were there for each other when we needed to be.”

Despite getting the win in Premier Division, it didn’t seem to be Olinda Ferny Creek’s day with the club unable to claim the B and C Grade finals.

In the B Grade, Beaconsfield withstood a late surge from the Bloods to secure a 40-35 win.

The Eagles came out firing and appeared

to stun the top-placed Bloods throughout the first three quarters.

It wasn’t until the final quarter that the Bloods finally got some rhythm and mounted a searing comeback.

But it was too little too late as the Eagles held on comfortably to take the win.

In the C Grade, Olinda couldn’t complete its fairytale finals run as it was beaten convincingly by Cranbourne, 36-17.

The Bloods almost had the perfect finals run, after coming from fifth place to make the grand final.

But the Eagles proved exactly why they had been one of the top teams the entire season, leading at every break to finish with a strong win.

In other grand final games throughout the day, Berwick defeated Cranbourne 24-19 in the Premier Division D Grade grand final.

ROC rebounded, after an upset 32-28 loss to Berwick in the 15-and-under grand final, by claiming the 17-and-under title 35-26 against Cranbourne.

Meanwhile, Pakenham brought the home crowd to its feet with a narrow two-goal win over Narre Warren in the 13-and-under grand final.

The Lions trailed the Magpies until halftime, but an impressive second-half performance inspired by athletic goal attack and best on court Lachlan Bertrone saw the home side come back and then hold on to the win.

Morsello magic at crease

By Richard Millot Perfect conditions greeted teams for the opening weekend of the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association, with several players showing the rewards of a solid pre-season.

Joe Morsello was the rock of the Knox Gardens innings against Eildon Park, producing an opening- round century.

The Panthers looked up-and-about early, with the home side 2/32 after the opening 15 overs.

Morsello then teamed up with Adam Wylde shortly after, with the duo taking the score past 4/174 at the 65 over mark. Wylde was dismissed for 43, but Morsello continued on, reaching triple figures with 10 overs remaining.

He continued through to remain unbeaten on 135 not out and the Falcons finished the day on 7/276.

At Fairpark, an Aaron Brunner century helped Belgrave to a competitive total in their encounter with Johnson Park.

Winning the toss and batting first, Brunner's 108 provided stability to the Magpie's attack, well supported by debutant Jarrod McPhee with 79.

For the Sharks, Coby Law (4/44) and Mitch Ley (3/44) lead the attack with pace bowling the order of the day.

Sajana De Silva was impressive in his debut for Upper Ferntree Gully in their match against Ferntree Gully Footballers. De Silva claimed 7/51 with his off-spin to hamper the Griffens, however efforts in the middle order from Nick Bogar (67) and Kuldeep Sidhu (64) - including a 127-run 5th wicket partnership - helped to set a total of 264 for the Kings to chase next week.
